Great food -- service is just right

By nuheart |

A group of nine of us had a terrific dinner. Every person loved their food and the service for a large group was incredible. We love to go there for great French inspired food at reasonable prices and friendly professional service. Oui oui!

I'm too broke...

By Casey T |

My mother and I have been working in the area doing an estate sale across the street. The day before my visit, the cooks came by the house to bring a large dish of food to share with the home owners of the estate sale. The food was amazing. The owners insisted that we taste the chicken. Needless to say, we were so impressed we came back the next day to have lunch for ourselves. Well, being that we are preparing for estate sales, we were dressed in our "work" attire wearing yoga pants, a shirt, and comfortable shoes. I dropped my mother off and parked my 2015 Pink Mirage. My mother placed a carry out order because we had to get to work. When I approached the restaurant, an older Hispanic male in valet told me, "This place was too expensive and there were cheaper restaurants around the corner". I responded and said that I was looking for my mother. The staff and manger were extremely nice, they even offered us water while we waited and an extra chair to sit in. As we waited, there were only 3 tables open and I noticed a man coming from the back office. He walked right past us without speaking and greeted each of the guest dining in for lunch. He then sat down at a table with a party that was awaiting his arrival. I asked the manager who he was and she said he was the owner. As a new customer not looking for a new place to dine and bring friends, I will never do business here again. Also, when we got in the car, we had no utelisils to eat with or napkin and my mother gave a tip. I am 29 years old and now entering into my 7th year as Special Education Teacher. I guess next time I will ask were the back door is so I can enter in the way I was treated. Oh, and did I mention I was black?

I just don't get it

By Suzana K |

We went for brunch and I must say it was truly disappointing. The only thing that saved it was the waitress. She was personable and knew the menu well. How on earth do you list steak and eggs and then it actually be pork. Thank goodness she told us that when we ordered!! The good we actually did order was ok not super but ok. I'll give it another run perhaps for dinner. It's off my brunch radar for now.

Not French

By Victor L |

Contrary to their advertising, this is not a place for French food; it is however a place for Paris prices. Our meal cost $75 per person, not including tips or wine. The food brought to the table was good, but not great, and might be said to resemble French food, but definitely not to equal it. Encouraged by the waiter, I had the Cajun chicken (not really French). This dish was tasty enough, but was really just a blackened chicken breast, slathered in butter and covered with French fries. Two people at our table had the duck confit. Again, tasty enough, but not particularly special, especially for the price. Other menu items included steak, a pork chop, and the obligatory braised short rib, none of which would qualify as French. The appetizer menu includes a foie gras and a country pate. In reality, these are two different pates. There is no fois gras, which would be an actual goose or duck liver prepared in a sauce. Maddeningly, the manager took time out to argue with me about this, although I did not seek the discussion. If your manager doesn't know the difference between pate de fois gras and fois gras, and you are claiming to be a French Restaurant, you have problem. Desert was also a bit disappointing. The creme brulee (also, not really French) came to the table with hot crust, but cold custard. Again, tasty enough, but... All in all, if you are looking for French food in Dallas, this is not the place to look. Similarly, if you are looking for an upscale meal where the prices and quality match, that is also not this place. Food was good, but not great. Wine list was good, but also not great.

Overrated- Not Real French Food- Better Options for the price in Dallas

By DFW_Foodie |

Le Bilboquest is overrated. Unless you live close, frequent often, and use this as an excuse not use your own kitchen, you are going to be treated subpar. Firsts- We had made a reservation with another couple weeks in advance to celebrate an anniversary. When we came in, the host sat us at the table next to the door. There were several tables open, but apparantly they were "reserved" for special guests. We made our reservations 5-6 weeks in advance. The special guests were all local business people and you have to imagine they frequent often. We waited for almost 10-15 minutes before they figured out a better arrangement. We had contemplated leaving. Not a great start. Knowing it was special occassion and giving the crappiest table in the place up is really poor etiquette on their end. Not even a comped glass of something while we waited and tables were EMPTY! TIP- Ask for an interior table in the main dining room when you book. The couple next to our table said they were needing to leave because the owner "fit them in". Rather than give them the crappy table, they got a great table. The menu had "French-ish" food with Texas twists. The steak frites was very good. Everything else was sub-par including a salmon tartare that is cold and straight out of a 1980's wedding. The mussels were ok, for the ones that were open. We easily had 4-5 mussels that weren't open, yet they were still served. If you consider Veal Scallopini, Texas Ribeye, and Cajun Chicken to be French, then this is your place. Scallops were a highlight. By the way, the "Moules-Frite" on the menu did not come out with french fries. Wine and Service- The wine list is short (one page) and typical of restaurant markups. There were a few interesting options, but nothing stellar. The stemware was appropriate. Our server was ok. He was nice, but failed to fill our wine glasses up at all when they were empty. The waiter seemed quite content knowing he would probably make 20% off of expensive food with little work. Not much effort. The total bill per person (app, entree, wine) with 20% grat was $140. There are better places to hit that number in Dallas. Try Lavendou if you are craving French food. Needless to say, we will not be back. Their poor attention to our special event, combined with average food, high prices, and being over attentive to their "regulars" is the reason. Take the review for what its worth, but take your money and spend it elsewhere. Bon Apetit!

Wow!

We stumbled onto this place and thank the Lord! The food was the best on our four day stay in Dallas. Perfect service, perfect seating, delicious food!

Lovely Atmosphere

By AMM5226 |

This is a lovely restaurant. You won’t go wrong planning a romantic evening or fun dinner with friends. The food is outstanding and so was our service. The atmosphere is just right with loads of windows and charm. There is valet parking right outside so easy in and out. We had the smoked salmon appetizer and it was very good. Filet au poivre was cooked perfectly. Profiteroles for dessert were perfect. Overall I highly recommend for a special night out.

Lunch in Paris

By DallasExpert |

I was just in Paris a few weeks ago and I felt like I had returned to enjoy a delightful lunch while sitting on the flowered outside terrace. We tried the signature spicy chicken, the rich mushroom soup, the jumbo decadent burger with bacon, the salmon done to a perfection, and finished it off with a pungent lemon tart. Nice wine selections at reasonable prices. No wonder I come back week after week!

I died

By Meg_4900 |

The brioche french toast... The texture, the smell, the flavor, all heaven. The coffee, rich and ripe with depth and substance, which might sound bizarre, but when was the last time coffee touched your soul? The atmosphere was cozy and lovely. Seating might seem a little tight, but it's so worth it. It was the perfect brunch.

Pricey but an exceptional dinner

By mshbnyehud |

I typically review with a sense of "value", price paid overall versus quality of product and service. Le Bilboquet delivers solidly as one of the best French experiences in Dallas. Our reservation for 4 was honored on time, and we sat on the covered porch area on a cool evening. Should have brought the sport coat. We ordered an excellent Pinot Noir fairly priced at 2X retail cost. Our group sampled a few starters, all exceptional. Particularly good was the mushroom soup (du jour) which is very tasty but not cream based. Frites came in a very generous portion (suitable to be split by 3 - 4 persons) but without ketchup on the side. That should be standard,. I thoroughly enjoyed the grilled romaine salad -- also sizeable enough to be split between 2 persons. My partner and I split the Poached Halibut entrée which was perfectly cooked and delicious. Our friends split the Dover Sole (pricey at $58) but also more than enough for 2 persons to share, and excellent. We passed on dessert, although our server hardly made an effort to persuade us. No automatic dessert menus delivered to the table. We probably would have split at least one dessert, but decided that the "do you want to order dessert?" question would be a "no". What did we miss? All told, with wine, dinner turned out to be about $80 per person including tax/tip. That's right on the borderline in my book between 4 stars and 5. We'll surely return, but next time will be for a special occasion and not just a dinner out with friends.

Perfect

By sofitastic |

After being seduced by the Bilboquet while lunching with some friends, I reserved for our 15th anniversary diner. The food was light and delicious. As a French person I appreciate real, authentic and fine French cuisine. And this is exactly what you are offered here. The portions are not too big, which allowed us to enjoy appetizer, main course and dessert. Because you don't want to miss the dessert. :-) And because we were celebrating, one of the dessert was served with a sparkling/volcano candle and was on the house! Very nice! I completely fell in love with that restaurant.

The potential is there, but several items must be addressed

By mingfatsai |

Though this Travis Street offshoot of a NYC establishment has developed quite a following with the monied, more mature Dallas dining establishment, there are still numerous rough edges that require polishing. The first thing we appreciated after being seated was the rattan-like chairs shaped and textured so that one's bottom has a tendency to slide (not the case if you are sitting at a booth, so go for that option if possible). The next issue was our server. She was brusque and barked her commands at us. Her use of diction was also not becoming of what one would expect at a finer dining establishment. When describing the dishes, she would comment that with this entree, you git this and this and this. That may be fine for the Olive Garden, but when I'm paying $30-45/entree, a classier experience is desirable. The wine list had a reasonable selection of California offerings but the French options (and this is a bistro, non?), were barely there. They really need to go on a French wine buying spree, and with the dollar so strong, they have no excuse whatsoever. The wine mark-up is 75 to 125%. For appetizer, I had the lobster risotto. The rice was mildly al dente, but the lobster was perfectly tender and the consistency was creamy. I liked it very much. My wife had the mussels, a mixed experience. They were fresh and cooked to be perfectly tender and succulent, but a third of them were not open and most of these were thus not eaten. They were not spoiled, just undercooked and thus not readily accessible. The broth had an overly generous amount of saffron (is that rare or what?) and was buttressed with oil, making it heavy. Good flavor, but very rich. For our main courses, my wife had the rack of lamb. The meat was cooked rare as requested and was high quality and flavorful. The brown sauce with it was also good. I liked the accompanying Brussels sprouts and vegetables very much. Underneath was a mushy blue cheese sauce that was really unnecessary and overwhelmed the vegetables. My dish, Osso Bucco, had a wonderful flavor and saucing (though it lacked the touch of citrus granita that often adds zesty counter-balance to this dish). But alas, it was completely cold. I know this dish is made well in advance, but someone in the back forgot to warm my serving before sending it out of the kitchen. I brought this to our server's attention and the manager quickly visited our table and kindly apologized. A new dish was created for me. This time, it was hot and just to my liking. As an additional gesture of good will, the manager offered us complimentary glasses of late harvest wine to savor with dessert. This went very well with the Tarte Tatin we selected. The apples were cooked tender with subtle carmelization. However, they served the Tarte topped with slivered almonds and a scoop of commercial ice cream. Neither of these were necessary and I scraped the almonds off, took one or two bites of the ice cream and finished the apples. Preparing the Tarte with a more buttery cooking under layer (and thus over-coating) is exquisite all by itself. It needs no added this or that. Overall, the dishes could achieve more and thank God for the courteous manager. Restaurants in this price range must deliver.

Too many flaws

By billp25 |

It all started out so wonderful, I called and asked if we could move up our reservation, they checked and were able to assist us with an earlier time. And, usually, if the food is good and the service is trying, I can overlook a few flaws at this price point. But unfortunately, at our visit they just kept piling up. Perhaps the chef spent too much time standing around in at the edge of the dining room, perhaps Sunday of a three day weekend overwhelmed them, perhaps our server is still not convinced that the hospitality industry is for her (she was a former teacher) who knows... what I can say: 1. upon entering we were pushed aside by wait staff rushing about. Clearly they had no regard for the actual customer. 2. our bottle of wine had cork in it, a minor flaw and it happens even tot he best of servers, but an "oh sorry" and "we'll replace that " (which we would have declined) is usually what I expect 3. They had trouble keeping our water glasses filled and finally just left us a bottle of water 4. They had trouble keeping our wine glasses fill - finally, I just got up and helped myself out of the ice bucket. Too bad, because we certainly would have had a second bottle. 5. They ran out of bread (yup, ran out) 6. 1 entree came, then... we waited... and waited... for the rest of our entrees... I finally asked our server, she basically shrugged her shoulders and said, well, the chef is standing over there (that was how I learned he just sort of stands around at the edge of the dining area) 7. no offer of a refill on the coffee 8. check was just left, no "would you like anything else".. I could go on ... but I think you get the point.

Lovely spot with good food and wine list

By Bas303 |

It's always hard to find proper steak tartare. While not the best I've had, le Bilboquet certainly won't disappoint. Big big plus is the availability of Billecart-Salmon Champagne. They even had the Brut Rose so I just had to order it. Together with Pinot Noir glasses (yes really, don't use flutes for this one) a match made in heaven.

Very nice experience

By CliveWatkins |

Hard to find something wrong with this spot. Very open very, white and bright, yet very warm and comfortable. Service was very personal and more than accommodating. I liked the menu, bit of everything that you could like. Food was fresh tasting, and plenty, and a fair and well balanced wine list. Patio is nice but I imagine on a busy afternoon not very appealing with the traffic. But you’ll like it here, simply pleasant

Surprising takes on some French classics

By Ray C |

We tried this venue last night & were impressed with both the food & the service. Although packed, we were promptly seated on time. Recommendations from the waiter were pondered & then tried with satisfying results. For entrees, My son had the best warm goat cheese salad ever. My wife & daughter in law both had the roasted romaine salad while I had the mussels with frites. We each commented that the portion size would suffice for a meal. Main courses consisted of a very tender halibut for my daughter in law. My wife had a lobster Capellini which as told had large pieces of lobster & was very tasty while my son & I both had the cow au in. We both commented on the lightness of the sauce in contrast to the more traditional heavy red wine based sauce. It was none the less moisten& tasty. No room for desert but satisfying overall with attentive service. One caveat for a winter night innFebruary. Although the temperature was acceptable for outdoor dining, the wind gusts sometimes threatened to blow everything off the table. The waiter noted this & closed the portable walls to make it more enjoyable.

Solid food and atmosphere

A French-styled place with excellent variations on the menu, in the neighborhood. They must be doing something right, because several high profile Dallasites were present the night we ate there. We were dining with friends. They initially sat us out on the porch, but the wood flooring was such that every time a server walked past our table, the nearest person could feel his or her chair dip. They cheerfully relocated us inside--no big deal. They have an excellent bar. I am more of a beer drinker, and they offer a good range of choices, including Kronenbourg. The menu is good--I have enjoyed everything I have ordered. We started with salads, always fresh and with excellent dressing. The bibb is very good (Dijon vinaigrette), and I enjoyed the baby beet salad (with ricotta). For entrees, this time I did NOT have the Cajun Chicken (always good) and instead went with the Coq au Vin, which was wonderfully flavored with mushrooms and pearl onions. The rest of our party ordered fish: trout, salmon and poached haddock. The fish is prepared very well--well seasoned and not overcooked. An excellent neighborhood choice. Even sharing a chocolate mousse and ordering our share of drinks, it was about $75 per person with tip.

Can be stellar, but not consistent-American despite the name.

First visit to this very attractive and popular restaurant. Not much French on the menu-escargo does not a French restaurant make! Suspect that if you get a good waiter/waitress, you are more likely to have a good experience. Initially, our group of four were given a basket of 3 rolls-the waitress quickly brought another basket (of 4 rolls) when asked. It was appreciated that we were offered tap water rather than given a hard sell for bottled water. The first pour was lukewarm but a cold bottle was later place on the table. Food was a little uneven-the special appetizer (smoked salmon) was very good. Filet au poivre and ribeye were well cooked and accompanied by a huge mound of crispy string fries. Veal scallopini was above average but nothing to get really excited about. Wine list was small; prices were quite high. $13 for a simple gin martini seemed high as well. When the checks came, everything was mixed up (we had asked for separate checks) but the waitress sorted things out without an attitude. So--in general a good experience, but at these prices not consistent enough to come here regularly.

Good food!!

By Ryan K |

The food at Le Bilboquet was very good. I had the salmon burger which was amazing and very tasty. Our waiter was wonderful though I don't know his name.

nice place; good food; bad dessert

By jpatter1 |

Nice ambiance. Crab avocado salad was very good. Cajun chicken breast was tender and well-seasoned. Branzino was the smallest I've seen, but very good. Beet salad was delicious. Veal entree was very good. Bread was excellent. Service excellent. Fries blah. Disappointment: dessert. Apparently no pastry chef. Lemon tart was mediocre and not fresh. Crust was old. Molten chocolate cake was just a chocolate tart. No crust on the outside. No liquid on the inside. Ordered profiteroles but they were out. Skip dessert.

Go-to French restaurant in Uptown Dallas

By Jeff C |

Le Bilboquet was the perfect restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. Steak tartare and tomato mozzarella appetizers were delectable. The Cajun chicken with French fries, a favorite at the restaurant, was tender and a bargain at $36. We also enjoyed veal scaloppini and salmon tartare for entrees. Le Bilboquet has a nice wine list, the ambiance is warm, and the service professional. We look forward to our next visit.

Very Disappointed

By imnrninsc |

My husband and I flew to Dallas from North Carolina to attend the 20th Anniversary of the company he founded. Our daughter and her husband drove over from Austin to join us as well as our granddaughter and her fiancé from Tyler. For this special time together I made reservations at Le Bilboquet, a highly rated upscale French restaurant in the Travis Walk center. I had made reservations a month ahead to be sure we all could get in on a Saturday evening. Two of our grandchildren were unable to attend, so I called the restaurant Saturday afternoon to confirm our reservation and to inform them we would be 6 instead of 8. When we arrived for our 7pm reservation, we were directed to a small table just inside the doorway. I immediately ask if we could be seated at another table not located in the doorway. Looking around the restaurant there were several larger tables that were unoccupied, but the only one offered to our party was a table set for four that could be a very tight fit for 6. No other opinions were available per the manager, even after explaining this was an important event that we had planned and been looking forward to for some time. Needless to say we were all disappointed at the lack of consideration for our party. We chose to go elsewhere rather than be cramped sitting in the doorway. We were in walking distance of Toulouse Restaurant on Knox St. so we hoped we could get a table for the six of us. I must say that we made a great decision! We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. The service, food and atmosphere were perfect. A big Thank You to Toulouse Restaurant for saving our Celebration Dinner. It turned out to be a great night. Le Bilboquet is off my restaurant list. We highly recommend Toulouse on Knox St. Dallas for a great French dinner and friendly and efficient service!

What's Not to Love

The food and the atmosphere really go hand in hand. I haven't had anything I didn't like. It can be a great place to go with your girlfriends or as a date night. A must try if you live in Dallas or if you are visiting.

Great French Bistro!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in town! We love their brunch, lunch and dinner. The service is always top notch. The food keeps us coming back time after time and the atmosphere is lovely without being stuffy.

Authentic French Bistro in Dallas (via NYC)

By y salnikoff |

So delicious! Ricardo honed his skills at the original and legendary Le Bilboquet in NYC and transplanted the delicious menu, bursting ambiance and attention to details to Dallas. Visiting from NYC, I was thrilled to see the high energy and attractive crowd and best of all the creamy pate, steak frites, excellent wine list and tasty deserts. We'll be back soon!

Great dinner!!

By Karen S |

We had dinner last night and will definitely be back. I had the mushroom risotto and the ribeye. Both were very good!! It would have been nice to have had more choice in wine at less than $100 a bottle.

Great Place to Share Sunday Brunch/Lunch with Friends!

By Parlez-vous1 |

Love this place! Food is always delicious. Atmosphere is fun. In favorable weather ask to be seated outside instead of the main dining room. Pâté de Campagne is house made and delicious. Just wish that the Escargots with Garlic Herb butter could be ordered for brunch/lunch. Friendly staff to greet you at the door. Please note that your choice of wine may not be available. We have had this occur on more than one occasion. So prepare to be flexible regarding your wine selection.

Beautiful evening

By stetler4 |

Our first time to this restaurant. Tables somewhat cramped together. Service was very nice although a little rushed. I enjoyed 2 chef specials, mushroom risotto with scallops and then lamb osso bucco for dinner. My wife had grilled romaine and the Cajun chicken with frites. Ok wine selection on menu. Reasonably priced. Beautiful cool evening in Dallas. They had the doors open to the outdoor patio.

A night of good and bad

By Muhammad K |

Bad: Waiter told us we have to order right away because there was a party going to sit where we were. I of course told them we were not going any where until we were ready to. Also, we ordered seared Foie Gras and got patte, which they do have on the menu and then they proceeded to tell us that's is their Foie dish. Good: Food over all is very good, decent wine list and atmosphere. At the end they offered to buy us drinks if we would be willing to relocate to another table so they can sit a large party. If they would have led with that, the night would have went differently.

Cozy covered outdoor setting

By Robert L |

We enjoyed a delightful dinner with two other couples sitting in this restaurant's cozy, covered outdoor setting. My wife had delicious salmon and I filet au poivre, which was excellent. I started with sautéed leeks, which were not quite tender enough. We shared a floating island and chocolate profiteroles for dessert. Our service was very good.

Good food, escargot and foie gras

By Herve D |

That was a good experience - terrasse and service are great. Music was good, not too loud and good ambiance overall. Tartare and foie gras met my expectations I will come again ...

15 minutes late & treated poorly

By AmyNNN |

We got caught in Mavs traffic & Loop 12 being completely shut down. Called from the car to let them know we were on the way. Arrived already feeling a little frazzled from being late and were greeted by the front of the house with ‘you’re late’. There were 8 open tables at the time. One that they didn’t seat anyone at for 1.5 hours after we got there. Our server was great, the food was ok. We won’t go back. Maybe it was because I wasn’t wearing my fur.

Solid 5 on Service, 3.5-4 on Food

By Coyote-Travelerz |

The service made the experience. We went on a Sunday night and it was not very busy so we got a lot of attention, which we appreciated. The appetizers were great (muscles and Bibb salad) as was the desert (a merengue pie). My entree was okay, but not fantastic (trout I believe). I wouldn't recommend it. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I will give it another try, just order a different entree.

Savor the chicken dish while you dine at a sidewalk cafe and pretend you are in Paris!

By Sandra K |

I've had a lot of dishes with chicken but Le Bilboquet offers one of the best! My girlfriend and I enjoyed eating outside and I pretended I was at a sidewalk cafe in France. The sauces were excellent and the service wonderful!

Delightful Experience

By lv1025 |

From the first step through the door our visit was a perfect experience. From the hostess, to our server Patrick, to the bread and butter man, to the food runner, everything was on point. We had Filet Au Poivre, Veal, Branzino - everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Patrick knew when to be at the table and when to be away. This was a birthday celebration for a friend. It was my and my wife’s first visit however this restaurant is a favorite with the birthday celebrant. It is now way up on our list. And oh, the seating indoors and out is very refined and pleasant. Reminiscent of a cafe in France. This is a very fine establishment. Highly recommended.

Excellent food, friendly staff, charming atmosphere

This was my second visit to this gem of a restaurant. We went for Sunday brunch on a hot sunny day and had an exceptional experience. The food is marvelous, the staff friendly and accommodating. The dining areas are fresh with flowers and tasteful decor.

The food, service, and ambience were all fantastic. The Cajun Chicken is succulent and flavorful. The clientele is lovely. Ferraris parked in front are an added plus. I highly recomend this Le Bilboquet.

Paris in Dallas!

By BGRMAUI |

Went twice. Had two great experiences with food and service. We felt like we were in Paris! The steak tartare was the best. Sunday brunch was absolutely delightful. Great French wine. Great menu. Both times the service was perfect. Not rushed. Would definitely recommend everyone to try this restaurant. If I lived in Dallas it would be one of my haunts!

This restaurant has been around for several year, but we just tried it out. We have eaten there 3 times and had fine meals with very good service. I think it will become our restaurant of choice.

A New York Haunt in Dallas

By JohnGSelf |

This is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. There has been some uneven service but I think they are getting this under control. Blackened chicken with pommel frites is a house specialty and worth a try. A nice wine list and well mixed cocktails. This place is a sell out on weekends so book early!

Didn't stand out

By Paloma_SRdz |

This is a great spot to enjoy a "fancy" lunch/brunch with friends or family. I went for Sunday brunch, and the place was pretty full. We had a reservation and were seated indoors by the window, so it was nice. This is the kind of place were the service doesn't stand out, because everyone seems to be in a hurry, and tend to be kind of snobbish. They took our order, and it took forever. We all had the cajun chicken (their specialty) and it was ok... It comes with a side of salad and fries. I would recommend it if you are looking for a place to see and be seen, but that's it.

Sensational large group dinner

By mshbnyehud |

Twelve of us dined on a busy Friday evening, and the results were superb. Service was spectacular -- lots of attention to the table, even though the rest of the restaurant was very full. Never rushed, but very attentive. At the waiter's recommendation, I thoroughly enjoyed the Filet Mignon, perfectly cooked medium, with tons of extremely authentic French frites. Crispy and delicious! I started with the grilled Romaine salad, which was delicious as well, and ended with the chocolate mouse split between four of us (more than enough for us all) which was just spectacular. I'll come back to Le Bilboquet in a heartbeat!

Terrific

Great restaurant and atmosphere. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. The only negative is you are in pretty close quarters with other guests. If I lived in the area I would be a regular.

Worst service EVER- I don't get all the hype at all

By TripsAh0y |

I read all the reviews prior to going here, and noticed that everyone complained the service was terrible. Well, I am here to confirm : THE SERVICE IS TERRIBLE. I arrived a few minutes later than my 3 friends, and they already had a bottle of wine. 20 minutes after I joined them, the waiter still had not stopped by and still had not brought me a wine glass or water even. He finally showed up asking to take our order, never acknowledging that I had joined the table or asking me if I would like a beverage. We ordered our appetizers and he started to walk away, but my sister in law (who dines here often and knows the service is atrocious) yelled at him to come back so we could go ahead and order our entrees. So we did.... This turned out to be a really good decision that probably saved us an hour. Waiting on both the round of appetizers and the entrees took FOREVER. After we finished the appetizers we had at least 20-30 minutes before our meal arrived to the table. I understand that this is a nice restaurant and they are trying not to rush you - but come on, I don't want my 3 course dinner with friends dragged out into a 2.5 hour affair! This is kind of one of those Dallas-y spots where people go to "see and be seen". Tom Hicks and his wife were dining next to us, as well as a bunch of other local celebrity types. If you like this flashy/yuppy atmosphere, it's great for that - I personally don't care for it at all. As far as the food itself, the mushroom risotto was really delicious - and the Cajun chicken was definitely the favorite of our four entrees. Bonus: It comes with a LOT of really delicious shoestring fries (that would, however, benefit from some form of seasoning). I ordered the sole and was not impressed. Also, the vegetables that it came with were literally dripping with oil - so much so, that my shirt had drips of olive oil all over it by the end of the night from the green beans traveling from the plate to my mouth. Saturated in oil would be an understatement in this case. My sister in law chose this restaurant as a place to celebrate our friend's purchase of her first home - and the waiter was made aware of this prior to dinner. He was supposed to bring out a special dessert that we had arranged beforehand, but 20 minutes after our plates had been cleared, we were still sitting there waiting for the surprise dessert to arrive. One of the girls eventually had to go track down the waiter and ask him to follow through and bring the dessert. He showed up 5 minutes later with the chocolate mousse dessert with a sparkler in it, which was decadent and delicious. We asked to see a dessert menu to get another dessert for the table, and we ordered the egg whites whipped with sugar which is essentially a big, white piece of tasteless spongy foam. Pass on this one folks and go for the chocolate! Better yet, pass on the restaurant all together, and go to one of the many better establishments around the corner like Toulouse, Villa-O, or Taverna and spend half the time dining out that you would have wasted at Le Bilboquet.

Consistently nice and charming meal

By Kevin S |

The Setting: 6 visits here over the last year, the "go-to" restaurant for my fiancé and me. NOTE: Reviews vary across the board for this place, as it truly does depend on what you order here. The Vibe: 4 Stars - True French Bistro vibe, with white table cloths and candles...but somehow they seem to do this without being stuffy. The crowd is mostly couples and small groups from nearby, and the age ranges across the board. The Service: 4 Stars - We have now been enough times that they remember us and what we like to order, but even without that treatment, the service is good, while relaxed. The Food: 4 Stars - As seen my many reviews, there are things to order and things not to order. Their salads are not too impressive and their lemon tart dessert is a bit gross. The beef carpaccio gets mixed reviews, although we have enjoyed it. Now, let me tell you what to get...first, the Crab and Avocado salad is amazing. Tons of lump crab meat and avocado with great flavoring and a very good value. Secondly, the Cajun Chicken. I know what you're thinking, this sounds weird at a French restaurant. Please just trust me and order it. If you come to Dallas for one night I seriously recommend you come here and order this dish. It is ridiculous how good it is, and consistently good. Lastly, the profiteroles for dessert. Instead of cream/custard, they use ice cream, and it is wonderful. The Bottom Line: Great service + the above recommended ordering selections = great meal.

Outstanding French in Dallas

By Mark W |

Food and service really outstanding. Certainly not French ambience, but maybe better, since without any haughtiness. Camille was our waitress, and she was truly delightful, helpful, welcoming, and attentive. My pate terrine was as good as any in France, as was the duck - maybe the best duck anywhere, and I eat duck often. The tarte tatin, was too much like baked apple, not tarte-like enough.

Saturday Night Date Night

By JParlante |

Had an old gift certificate to her so decided to make it a Saturday Date Dinner. The service is wonderful. I only saw one waiter working his behind off but always attentive while juggling several tables at once. The escargot appetizer was more than expected. I think we got a total of nine snails. The Sole (not on the menu but a chef selection that evening) was very good. The Frites that came with my rib-eye were very good also. The chocolate mousse for desert was everything you would expect from a French restaurant.

Great dinner

By Mssnash |

Had a wonderful dinner here the other night. We shared the grilled romaine salad and risotto. Both were very yummy and enough to share. I had the liver and onions for my entree, it was spectacular (if you like liver). It was very tender, not fatty or chewy in the least. Others had the soft shell crab and rack of lamb. All equally delicious. The place is very expensive, we had 3 cocktails, 1 bottle of the lower price range wine, and 3 glasses of wine and the bill was $300. (before tip) Alcohol was probably 1/2 the bill.

Excellent Restaurant

We had diner there last week, and the food quality, wine selection, and Service staff were wonderful. All plates were delicious and the deserts were outstanding.

Saturday Brunch

By BethB75205 |

Elegant bistro a block from Katy trail. Seated immediately on a Saturday at noon. Ask for outside on a nice day. Service was more typical of NYC than Dallas, excellent and not rushed. Would rate 5 for service but the food was mediocre. Tacos were dry and a little bland. Mexican eggs with chorizo must have missed the chorizo as had no kick.

French dining that really is not French at all...

By JKCDMom |

We had a good meal here last night...I was so excited to eat here. I love a good French Restaurant. There are only one or two things on the menu that are French, though! Very strange..The Pork Chop was great. The mushroom soup a little watery (not cream based). Quite loud in there. Our service was wonderful. I think I might like to go back and sit outside...it is loud inside. They only have 1 bathroom (1 for men & and 1 for women). There was usually a small line. Just was so sad it was not more French!

Great little restaurant

By paolok66 |

This time I was in Dallas only for two nights on business and went for dinner here with some colleagues. Small intimate room with patio area ideal for the warmer months. Efficient and friendly staff I had the best week ever and the stronger G&T !

Charm of France with great food!

By Carol C |

On a lovely evening with the side walls rolled up to enjoy the great weather, we had a great meal with our great friends. Full bar; great bread with no bread plates is authentic French! Our fish dishes were excellent but the branzino I ordered had the entire row of bones left on the side of it. I should have sent it back, but picked around it.

A Little NYC in DTX.

I stopped into Le Bilboquet around 2:30 p.m. on a recent Wednesday afternoon. A business meeting ended earlier than expected, and I had hours to burn before catching my flight home. The restaurant was dead, but that didn't kill the charm. The whole affair is understated, neat as a pin, and stylish in a way that is not at all annoying. I enjoyed a perfect cheeseburger and fantastic skinny fries with an ice-cold gin martini while peering out of the big, sunny windows that front the dining room. Both the food and service were easy and low-key--just what I wanted my guilty pleasure "business lunch" to be. (FYI--There is no bar at which solo diners can eat, but I took a table alone, which I rarely do, and felt just fine about it.)

A slice of Paris in Highland Park

By Tim R |

Lunch visit for work. Light filled and understated interior decor, this is a very nicely done place. Simple menu of bistro classics, with no Texas styling, well executed and presented. One of the few places without ridiculous portion sizes. Daily soups are top drawer, chicken paillard almost as good as anything in Paris. Decent wine by the glass.

excellent value for money

By Pvspims |

It was the first time we went, and it was a fantastic experience. The service was very good, the food was delicious, and the setting was very inviting. As a cocktail we had kir royal, and it was already a good start to begin the evening. My wife had escargots (snails) and I had steak tartare as a starter: perfect, truly! Then, as a main, we had duck confit a l'orange and I had calf's liver. Again, very good. For dessert, we had profiteroles, and they were superb. As a wine we had a glass of bordeaux - excellent choice. We topped it off with a double espresso and a bombay thee .. We will definitely come back again.

WONDERFUL DINING EXPERIENCE

By Jim F |

A weekend trip to Dallas to celebrate wive's birthdays found us at Le Bilboquet for dinner. Gabriella, our server, was simply awesome in congeniality, knowledge of food items and superb in providing excellent care and service. She started out causing us some concern when she was unaware if the bar had Balvenie 12year old. At that moment we did not know she was our server. Minutes later we had the Balvenie and Gabriella was our fantastic server. We queried her on most all menu items and followed her recommendations. She recommended the Cajun Chicken. I prefer beef and had my mind made up to order the Filet Au Poivre. We ordered both items and much to my surprise and delight the Cajun Chicken was the best, very moist, well seasoned and sliced. Definitely a must try item. We also had wonderful Halibut. The salads, the Bibb Lettuce, Escargot, sides French fries, roasted spicy broccoli and the desserts were equally awesome. Our wives were treated with their desserts that had sparklers that were more like Roman Candles. Very nice presentation and most appreciated. My only regret is it is not in our city. Gabriella, once again was awesome, one of the best servers we have experienced, just needs a course in single malt scotches to be conversant :).

Crummy Service/Mediocre Food

By BBplusme |

The service is pretty horrible. I was pretty excited to try this place for brunch, but I was disappointed. It took almost an hour to place our order, it was hard to get drinks refilled and the food was slow coming out as well. This isn't a huge place and all of the tables weren't full, so I honestly expected great service. I tried the mimosa and the bellini and enjoyed them both. They were smooth and not overly juiced. The bread they place out as a start is soft, however the butter is rock hard and not spreadable at all. I ordered the Brioche French Toast and my friend ordered the Norwegian eggs. We split the meals in half, so we each got something savory and sweet, or so we thought. The Brioche French Toast is advertised to have some sort of Crème Brulee to it, which is did not have that flavor or crispness. The bread was great, and the fruit was fresh, but overall it was mediocre French toast at best. (I will say the blueberry pancakes looked to-die-for) The Norwegian eggs were not cooked to medium like we requested, they were over easy. The salmon was flavorless, which was a huge disappointment. It needed lots of pepper to help it out. The potatoes served with the eggs were completely undercooked and hard. They brought French fries out in replacement of those and they were great. The fries were crispy and fresh. If you must go here, try the blueberry pancakes maybe and cross your fingers for great service. I hope to see this place improve as it's charming and unique, but lacks quality and service.

Christmas Eve Treat

By Karen G |

Excellent choice for Christmas Eve. My daughter and son in law went recently for his birthday with friends and loved it. There were 7 of us. We had the avocado and crab appetizer, escargot , and some other starters. We also got the Cajun chicken and several fish specials. Everything was delicious. They already have reservations for New Years. It is a nice small intimate place where men wear jackets and women dress up.

My wife's favorite restaurant in Dallas

By Steve M |

We dine here every month or so and the scouting report is consistently good. The food (French) is reliably good - especially the Cajun Chicken - the bartender will accommodate special requests, and the wine list is good. Bon Appetit!

Two for $100.00

By Catherine D |

It's getting harder to find a good restaurant in Dallas where a couple can eat a good meal for $100.00. Bilboquet I'm sure doesn't want to be known for this, but when all the entrees are $35 - $45 meals can add up to $250.00 or more very quickly. We don't eat out very often anymore. We are empty nesters and I like to cook. But when we want to relax and go out Bilboquet is one of our go-to restaurants. The service is consistently very good, the atmosphere is always positive, and the food is consistently good. A simple classic bib lettuce salad? On the menu. Soups? Always. I enjoyed a beet salad served with goat cheese, tender arugula, pear and walnuts that was promptly presented. My husband chose the endive roquefort, but since he doesn't care for endive asked that bib lettuce be substituted. For my entre I had the duck confit. We could've easily split this entre as it included two thighs and legs served over sautéed greens and sweet potato puree. I would've liked a bit more sweet potato and the puree was so smooth it was like baby food. I think that mashed sweet potatoes might better serve the weight of duck. My husband enjoyed steak tartar. His only comment was that it was spicier than expected. He opted for no capers because he dislikes capers. Choose the smaller portion; it's really quite enough. The dish is served with fries that cover half the plate and three slices of toast...carb up. That was all left on the plate. But we had enjoyed the warm rolls with butter before the salads and killed our appetites. Next time I'll ask to have the bread taken away. We each enjoyed a nice Malbec. My meal was so flavorful that the wine was really unnecessary. The service is gracious and attentive. On a Wednesday night we were able to get a reservation for 7:30. There is porch seating and outdoor seating, but ask for the main dining room. That's where you will find the best atmosphere. The only complaint I have is that when diners celebrate a birthday the restaurant provides a sparkler 'flame thrower' that sizzles and smells terrible, but my husband surmised that their risk management people must have okayed this thing. Seating is a bit tight, so if you are obese you might not be comfortable. But if you have concerns tell the wonderful woman who takes reservations and she will reserve a table that has a bit of room around it. No dessert for us because for my husband he has to have his Alden's organic vanilla bean ice cream when he gets home. No more Blue Bell in this house; it's not organic.

Brunch is Average

By Doll33 |

I live in the city and have heard a lot of people talk excitingly about brunch there, but when we came with a group of 8 people, it was a let down. The menu had a lot of brunch options, but somehow failed to impress. Everybody ordered a different dish and nobody was particularly enamored with any of them. It's was just average brunch food. The service was very slow for no reason, as the place did not start getting busy until well into our brunch. We were there for forty minutes before our water came to take our order. Granted, once I told the manager we needed quicker service, he was very accommodating. But still it left a bad first impression. The only upper hand this place has on brunch over other Dallas spots is $3 mimosas and pretty atmosphere.

Fantastic. The Lobster pasta dish is one of my favs. Must have. And one of the great places in Dallas!

Excellent Food, Service, and Atmosphere

All entries our group enjoyed were delicious-lobster with angel hair pasta, the grilled salmon, the cajun chicken, and the rainbow trout. You can enjoy a table inside or outside on the patio.

When the stars align . . .

By Therese Diane |

Even the weather was perfect. On a fresh March evening, six friends who are in town for the opera, convened at Le Bilboquet for the first time. The paté, grilled romaine, and risotto were outstanding appetizers. The branzino with buttery green beans, carrots, and brussels sprouts and the filet mignon served with fries were especially delicious. The ile flottante is the stuff of dreams. Our server Teresa was the best I’ve ever had. Her expert care with no hovering or interrupting enabled us to enjoy each other and engage in lively conversation. The ambience is terrific. Truly, the stars were aligned.

Sunday Bruch was Scrumptious!

By henry2209 |

I had the creme brulee french toast made with brioche bread. Yum!. My partner had the lobster roll and said it was great.....but the truffle fries were a highlight and excellent with a wonderful hint of truffles. The eggs benidict were also outstanding as were the blueberry pancakes. We ordered a side of scrambled eggs and those were perfect! we loved the patio and today was the perfect day to sit out for a perfect lunch!

One of the best in Dallas

By hillhifi |

The first time we went to Le Bilboquet, we were very impressed. Our second trip confirmed that opinion. Everything, and I mean, everything was delicious. The escargot was not overrun with garlic, the Grilled Romaine salad was the right kind of crispy. The Duck breast is the highlight. The sauce is wonderful. Also, the veal scallopini and the rib-eye was top shelf. I am not a shill for this restaurant, just an avid fan. Check it out.

Chic Brunch!

By delmundov |

Reservation recommended. Parking is convenient only by valet otherwise prepare to walk a bit to park somewhere else. They offer dining inside or al fresco. If you're outside, it gets windy and the leaves from the trees can be annoying; falling on your food and table. The inside space and elbow room are pretty tight (I need my personal space). It's got a clean, modern look but welcoming. Our server was nice and knows their menu well. The brunch offerings were hefty paired with a Bellini and Bloody Mary. A very good dining experience!

French food in Dallas, TX

By Bookspapertravel |

A great restaurant in the Travis-walk area of Dallas. We had been told to order the Cajun chicken and it was absolutely delicious! We also had a mussel appetizer and the country pate. Both were excellent. Perfect pomme frites, great wine list, and yummy desserts. The ambience was great and we can't wait to go back.

Casual, Elegant And Intimate

By tphybridtx |

My wife and I had a business dinner at this Highland Park area restaurant last night. I haven’t eaten at a French restaurant in a few years, and I was expecting a stiff, formal dining experience. But much to my surprise, the atmosphere, the service and the meal were at a five-star level; yet friendly and relaxed at the same time. Try the escargot, if you like food adventure. They know how to prepare and serve this traditional French appetizer. We also split a grilled, Romaine salad wedge. I know it sounds unusual, but again, it was outstanding. For our main course, my wife chose the excellent pan-seared sea Bass. I had the Filet Mignon with pomme frites (French Fries). That’s what stunned me. This 1st class restaurant had the courage to prepare French Fries with a perfectly, cooked steak. It was a great meal. We topped off our evening with Creme Brûlée. This restaurant is located in the Knox Henderson district of Highland Park. Parking was limited. We chose to valet at a minimum of $5. Our table was on the patio, open to the evening cool breeze. The cost was about $150 for the two of us, but that was with iced tea and not alcohol. This is a perfect choice for a special dinner. Give it a try.

Just OK

By JoyfulMomentsCoach |

Humm......not really sure what all the fuss is about, I found this restaurant just ok. My girlfriend had the Southwestern Eggs, which was actually very good. I had (at the waiter's recommendation), chicken Paillard which was just kind of meh. Chicken with a tiny bit of salad and a mound of french fries. Our waiter was forgetful and we sat for several minutes waiting for various things. Not sure what the brown paper on top of the tablecloths thing is all about, it just seems to make a mess and exaggerate every drop of water. When I asked for a side plate for my bread and butter, the waiter brought one anyway but stated "Oh this is French style, you just use the brown paper" What? I have been to France many times, being from England, and have never heard of such a thing! The manager or owner, not sure what he was, was actually trying very hard visiting all the tables. Perhaps brunch was not the best time to go,

Excellent food

Bit close tables for my comfort. Drinks were"smaller" but still good. Food portions were very nice and sooo tasty. Get a salad and enjoy your entree!

Relaxed fine dinning in Dallas

By Alwaysgrubbin |

We met local friends here after a long drive from Dallas ready for an Old Fashioned and the relaxing evening ahead. My wife appreciated the fresh yellow roses on the table. The lighting was subdued and the noise level low. The evening moved at a relaxed pace from mushroom risotto and escargot apps to a variety of fish dishes - fresh halibut, Chilean sea bass and skate, a nice bottle of chardonnay and finally a chocolate mousse. Every dish was excellent. The accompanying vegetables were perfectly prepared. This place is a good choice for intimate gatherings or romantic evenings. After three visits, Bilboquet has become our favorite restaurant when visiting Dallas.

Cajun Chicken amazing

By Lorraine D |

On a business trip with guests from out of town and locals. This restaurant was recommended and it was perfect. It was business standard with white table cloth linens, black napkins, perfect service, attentive & friendly staff, with wine and mixed drinks. Food was also wonderful.

Perfect for couples or small groups

By Papa Bri |

We enjoyed a dinner for six last night with out of town relatives. Excellent food and attentive, discreet service. Definitely a will-go-back place. I had Divers Scallops for my main course, and they were perfect. Usually, a serving of three is standard fare at most restaurants; here they serve four. Portions for the others were ample and delicious. The restaurant is at the southern end of the Travis Walk building, which has valet, but the restaurant has its own valet right at the front door.

Dinner on Friday Nightd

By 1100springs |

This was a fantastic dinner. We had the Beet Salad, Carpaccio, branzino and pork chop. Only pork chop I have had that was better was Bouchon in Santa Barbra, branzino had crispy skin and was easily the best I have had, we are going back on Wednesday for lunch. First Friday of the month has Flamenco dancing across the street at Cafe Madrid.

Very nice dinner

By Louis D |

I had the opportunity to dine here recently and found it to be classically French but with no "pretense". My guest and I found the food and service remarkable and I look forward to returning soon!

Really hot day and AC not working. But at least lots of flies.

By John S |

We’ve been wondering why we hadn’t tried this place in our 5 years living nearby. Now we know, because it just doesn’t stack up. 100 degree heat index and they have the windows open and the AC struggling, older couple seated near us were almost sick from the heat. My food was ok, I liked the crab and avo salad and lobster pasta, but my wife’s halibut had an awful pungent smell that made me gag. The evening was ruined by oppressive heat, pungent smell and flies all over inside. Didn’t even look at dessert menu so we could just get home and cool down. Never again; we’ll stay with our usuals like Toulouse, Origin, Doce Mesas and Sachet.

The definition of personal service

By Papa Bri |

Our third visit here cemented our opinion that this is a superb restaurant, not only in terms of food and ambience, but in terms of their extraordinary efforts to cater to the customer's personal needs. This was an anniversary dinner, just the two of us, and I had booked thru Open Table (great app). I called the restaurant an hour before to see if we could get a spot on the terrace, but since I was in a wheelchair recovering from foot surgery, I might have some clearance problems. No problemo. When we arrived, they had guys moving heavy planter boxes out of our way so that I could easily access the best table on the terrace without weaving in between other tables. When we were through with a superb meal, the same thing in reverse...move the planters, roll me out to the valet, help me in the car. What more could you ask without even asking? This, my friends, is what personal service is all about. Whenever you find a restaurant with great food and table service with this to boot, you go back, and we will.

Two Words - Cajun Chicken

By Sandy L |

I seriously dream about this dish and this place. I love having to go to Dallas for work only because I get to ear here!

A Bad Night!

By Steve C |

Previously, I gave this place the best ratings.I have been here three times. The first two times were near perfect. This time I had excellent country pate', but it went down hill from there. The Cajun chicken was good, but the fries topping the chicken were so salty they were inedible. I ordered the sautéed spinach, and it was salted to death. I told the waiter, and he said nothing, so I took it out of his tip. I shall return, and hope that I can upgrade my experience.

Great food

By Alice S |

Server was excellent and very attentive. Went for Sunday brunch and food was excellent . I will recommend to others.
