Great brunch

By FiveDivers |

Great brunch. Great service with wonderful attention to detail. Omelettes cooked to order. Restaurant is excellent. Bar is ok, thus the 4 stars. Odd hours and ok service. Maybe I caught them on a bad weekend.

Elegantly Comfortable

By jodapoet |

The level III atrium at the J W Marriott near Union Square serves up a unique array of tasty delights geared toward teasing the palate in a relaxed yet elegant venue. Working a couple of blocks away from the lounge makes it so easy to stop by after work and have a delicious dinner with drinks and soothing music by the Sony Holland duo. When you walk in the hotel you are immediately greeted by trendy artwork by Chihuly and a host of others. The artwork sets the tone for the venue. The lighting makes it so easy to get great photos and the sound emanating from the musical performance is sheer perfection. I have frequented many a musical venue in SF and can honestly say that the sound in this level III room is fantastic. The room itself is spacious and very inviting. There is a bar complete with overhead big screen tv's for you sports fans out there and then there is the ever relaxing overstuffed chairs by the fireplace which allows you to warm up and listen to the beautiful music during their happy hour. I usually go during the time the Sony Holland duo is performing as it just soothes me soul and lends an irresistible feel to the ambiance. Now to the food. Their menu caters to every taste with a host of wonderful drinks and house wines. I personally love their house Merlot and order it each time I am there. If you get there during happy hour between 5 and 8, you have the choice of either ordering from their happy hour menu or their dinner menu. I have ordered from both. My favorite dishes are the sliders, classic club, scallops, crab cakes, flatbread pizza, bistro fries and more. I know I'm forgetting something. Each dish is tasty, filling and just all around GOOD. I have never had a bad experience with the food there. The waitstaff is impeccable. They are friendly, efficient and cater to your every need. Even when it's busy, they are right there ready to serve you. What I like most is that they generally love their job. Megan and Ryan in particular who I normally always see during happy hour are fantastic. Let me just say also that if you are in SF and want to experience a nice, friendly and warm venue particularly when the Sony Holland duo is playing there, this is the place. It is my number one go to venue after a long day at work. Love it there.

OK not great

By SanFranciscoBlue |

A 1 PM lunch reservation to meet with an old friend in a once special place. Sadly, the special is long gone from the restaurant. The food was fine, typical hotel fare at standard hotel prices. Three tables occupied and the ambiance wasn't far from a nice coffee shop. Service was slow and food coming out of the kitchen was slower. The most exciting part of the meal was the decorator and crew tromping through the dining room talking about the changes which are being planned. They started their loud conversation on the lobby side of our booth..it progressed through the dining room with no consideration of patrons. Eh, three tables occupied, no need to be concerned about paying guests. The highlight was the entry court doorman and valets. Attentive and courteous ..even friendly! As they should be..particularly when parking and lunch cost about the same.

Restaurnt in the JW Marriott

the food was good and convenient. If you can't make it out to some of the trendier spots- this is a good choice. If you are a hotel guests- it is perfect for apps at cocktail hour and breakfast.

Sony Holland Duo - Jazz Standards

By BrittanyFrance |

I recently came to Level III to hear Sony and Jerry Holland and brought a friend. I'm going back again this week to introduce other friends to their music. They are a wonderful local jazz duo, playing original music (written by Jerry) and all our favorite jazz standards. Sony's voice and musicality are superb - think Peggy Lee! Jerry's stylish accompaniments and original songs are wonderful. I especially like the songs he has written about San Francisco. Their music adds a classy, classic ambiance to this stylish lounge. I plan to be at the happy hour regularly while Sony and Jerry are there; and I will be bringing friends!

Sony Holland

By jwbasinlaw |

My wife and I had been trying to see Sony Holland and her husband perform for several years following reading a very impressive review of her in the San Francisco Chronicle detailing her history from street performer to the club scene. We were both extremely impressed with the talents they both displayed. Additionally, they were very friendly and personable during breaks when we got a chance to actually converse. We are very pleased that they are regulars at Level III. This makes it much more convenient to schedule and get to see them again on a more regular basis. We are planning to bring friends and introduce them to Sony and Jerry also as it is a wonderful venue. Cocktails and food were also superb Jim Basin and Maryann Saffold

Bar and Dessert was great

By John L |

I had just drinks and dessert but enjoyed both. The bar tender was from Ireland and was representative what you want in a bar tender: personable and enjoyable in conversation.

LEVEL III @ JW Marriott, Union Square

By Stuart L |

Food & drinks were good. Prices were very fair. We only had drinks & light snacks after dinner and a very busy day. Comfortable atmosphere & service was OK. Server was pretty busy, but we were not in a rush so it was fine. Server was very nice & apologized for our wait.

Only good thing about this Marriott

By rfor2d |

Nice friendly bar. Reasonable food. Very seldom see anyone in dining room but bar can be lively. I no longer stay at the hotel but often visit Level III Bar.

Terrific music + good food & drink = winning combination

By DJD1680 |

I live in San Jose but get to the City fairly often for various events, usually music-related. Am so very happy that my favorite performing pair of Sony & Jerry Holland are now ensconced at Level III on a regular basis (Wed. through Friday evenings 5-8 p.m.). The setting is comfortable and conducive to Sony's smooth and warm-toned vocals, accompanied beautifully by husband and composer, Jerry on guitar. Song selections run from Great American Songbook to contemporary standards to engaging originals by Jerry. Our choices from the food menu have always been delicious; likewise, our wine and drink selections. While our first visit to Level III in December 2013 was to enjoy music by the Hollands before proceeding on to a concert elsewhere in S.F., subsequent trips have been to specifically see & hear Sony & Jerry Holland perform at Level III and enjoy an evening of good food & drinks in a relaxing setting. Highly recommended!!

Nothing bad. Nothing great.

By markjholloway |

All the standard items you would expect at a business hotel. The buffet is relatively good value, with breads, fruits, pastries, salads, yoghurts and warm, over-cooked scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages etc. It includes a cooking station for good omelette or waffles. The a la carte has some good options, with generous servings. The poached eggs and breakfast sandwich were good. The service is ok, nothing special. Nothing bad. Nothing great.

Happy Hour

Pleasant hotel lobby restaurant and bar in the middle of a big atrium, looking up at the hotel rooms. All interior. Nice place for an expensive drink.

Best Lobster Mac & Cheese

By Jeff R |

Great location that I ate at while staying in the hotel the year before... and returned for once again. Lots of selection on the menu, and although it's pricey... the food is great. Highly recommend the Lobster Mac & Cheese... delicious!

Strange and Way Overpriced

By AdvoGirl |

Very slow service. Strange selections. Only place to eat in hotel, but priced like a fine restaurant, which it is not.

A real gem...!

By UteK711 |

Level III resaturant at JW Marriott in the heart of the City just two blocks from Union Square is a real gem! Just like a well kept secret. Very good food, friendly service and a warm and inviting atmosphere surrounded by the impressive open architecture of the wide atrium with a beautiful fountain and sculpture in the center... And if you are lucky enough to find the Sony and Jerry Holland Duo performing during the Happy Hour three times a week you don't want to leave anymore! You don't even have to, since there is free valet parking during their 3-hour-performance (with $15 per person on drinks or food). Couldn't be more convenient! I'll certainly come back on a regular base just to enjoy Sony's pure and smooth, jazzy voice and Jerry's incredible Guitar playing in a great place and to treat myself to a wonderful short escape!

Excellent

We all enjoyed our breakfast and wished we stayed here at JW Marriot. The service was excellent, the food was fresh and delicious and everything met our wishes.

Dinner @ Level III

By Troy W |

Very good service, and very good Northern California food made dining at Level III a very enjoyable experience. We dine there at least once every time we stay at the JW Marriott San Francisco! I highly recommend it.

A Gem in the Heart of Downtown San Francisco

By Jericho W |

Level III at the JW Marriot is truly one of the hidden gems in the heart of San Francisco's Union Square district. Sony Holland is an amazing singer with wonderful mixture of standard jazz and original songs written just for her. Her guitarist and composer Jerry is an incredible talent that I recommend everyone come here to experience. Along with this fantastic entertainment comes a very relaxing ambiance and a wide variety of excellent food. If in Union Square an looking for a place to experience great entertainment and excellent food, this is the place to go!

Restaurant convenient with Good steak and a nice ambiance

By KristalChapko |

Everything good closes early In San Francisco and the restaurant was open when we finished our meeting late at 10:00pm, we gave it a try and the steak was good perfectly cook to my order

A Wonderful Find!

By FJsMom |

We tried Level III as part of San Francisco's Dine About Town promotion, where you can check-out great restaurants around the city for a lower fixed price than their regular meals may be. If I hadn't read about Level III on the Dine About web site, I wouldn't have known it existed. It is, unfortunately, well-hidden. We had a great experience from the very beginning, riding the glass elevator at the JW Marriott Hotel to the modern and beautifully designed third floor lounge/restaurant area. Service was outstanding - friendly and attentive. The food looked as great as it tasted. The plating was artistic, and the food was prepared to perfection and delicious. The only downside I could see is that the regular menu prices are quite a bit higher than I would normally pay. I'm thrilled that I got to try Level III, and at a reasonable price. If money is no object, then this is definitely a place to seek out.

Great visit

By nili420 |

Great service and friendly staffs. Lobby was well maintained and well attended. Lots of space and nice layout. Bar was great.

Average Food, Average Service

By Clayton2 |

Dinner at Level III was average... nothing more, nothing less. What made it disappointing was the fact that we were the only table in use throughout most of our dinner and service was still spotty and slow. The food and drinks were good, but not noteworthy. Level III is convenient if you are staying at the JW Marriott (which was excellent), but temper your expectations or you risk disappointment. Check out one of the many great options nearby in the Union Square area.

Good time fun food

By HerbStroh |

Very "SF" atmosphere. It is located in a walking dead-end alley. Once inside, the place is hopping. We made reservations and were seated immediately. Good service, good food, and for San Francisco, great prices. This is an informal kind of place, so if fancy is your deal you wont be happy here. Beer selection was above average and priced well. It is noisy, so keep that in mind if you are choosing this restaurant for dinner.

This is better than it should be for being in a hotel

By ATravelingFamilyGuy |

Better food, if pricey, than it deserves to be. For example, the seared fish and salad were delicious. Noise isn't too bad either. Wouldn't choose it as a destination in San Francisco, but I wouldn't avoid it when staying in the hotel.

Music completes the atmosphere

By Enrico S |

Visually Level III is beautiful but that can be said for many 5 star hotel lobbies with adjacent lounges and restaurants. What makes this different is the live music. The current performer, Sony Holland, really complements and completes the atmosphere. Come when there is music, you will enjoy the experience. Call to make sure there is a performance, otherwise you will just be drinking beer in another 5 star hotel lobby.

A great meal

By ne_quine |

We hadn’t planned on eating in the restaurant during our stay in the hotel but our plans fell through for one evening so decided to eat here and we were most definitely not disappointed. When we arrived at the restaurant we were promptly seated and a drinks order taken before water and some bread were delivered to the table. The Beringer White Zinfandel wine was rather nice and not too unreasonably priced either so no need to bring your own wine! We both had soup of the day – vegetable that was pleasant enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the NY grilled steak and again very reasonably priced at $29 compared to some of the other hotels/steak houses nearby! It was cooked perfectly for me and likewise my partner thoroughly enjoyed his chicken dish. The highlight of the night was the dessert – three mini desserts for $10 and delicious would be an understatement! The staff were attentive without being overbearing and we’d happily eat there again.

Excellent food

By Stephen C |

We ate here when the main room was being remodeled, so we were seated in a conference room, complete with office chairs. An interesting concept, that actually worked quite well. The food and service were first-rate.

okay

By jbsh7777 |

The hotel was wonderful; this restaurant was average. Our waitress described the special as white fish; we asked how it was prepared? "grillled" was the only answer we received. In fact it was Swordfish that was very fishy. My pork loin was excellent, so maybe stick with non-fish items and don't get our waitress?

Sony Holland, Live Jazz After Work

By tbn32 |

I don’t go out all that much. Getting a drink somewhere after work always sounds like fun, and then most of the time I don’t. It was the prospect of being right up close in almost a living room kind of setting with Sony Holland that put me over the top. She does the standards and she does originals by her husband and on-stage partner Jerry Holland, playing jazz guitar. I’ve been following her for a few years. Now I was following her to the Level III, on my own. I guess I wanted to check it out there once by myself. I was still prepared to turn around while I was taking the elevator up. But then I heard her singing right away as I stepped out and that settled it. It seemed too good to be true and it basically was. The bartender made a nice Manhattan, which I sipped slowly, along with a platter of some artisanal stuff. So for less than the tickets alone somewhere else, I had excellent food and drink and a live performance from someone who just pulls you right in with the way she looks and sings. She did a whole set, spent most of her break talking with people there, like me, and then she sang some more. Amazingly, she does this every week. I will go again and share it with someone else this time.

Disappointing

By nadiag0610 |

I booked this reservation for our Thanksgiving dinner a month in advance. We came at 6.40pm for our 7.00pm reservation and asked if we could be seated early. They couldn't, which was understandable. It wasn't ok that we instead got seated at 7.30pm at a table that was not even inside the restaurant. The waitress took ages to take our order and kept forgetting about us. We needed drink refills, etc. When we got our turkey it was very dry. Eventually after 15 minutes I had to go to the front desk to ask for gravy. For two dinners and a mac and cheese for my daughter, the bill was over $150 with tip. Not worth it at all.

Poor management is continuing and results are flawed

By Lee R |

Unfortunately, the food that was quite good was really flawed by the small details. None of the hot food or the coffee was really hot, but rather fairly warm. Neither salt and pepper nor a spoon for the coffee was brought until requested -- which the waiter did properly when requested though. As usual, it's the management process rather than the employees or the chef, but rather management. It's a fairly new place and I think it's likely that they will get these minor but annoying flaws corrected which they do need to do when breakfast for two with tip cost $70. BUT on the way home we encountered a friend who said, It was the same when I was there" and when asked when she said, "3 months ago". This is unacceptable and shows bad management from the top of the hotel to the restaurant and perhaps back to central Marriott management–– sad.

The short rib tacos were outstanding!

By Gringo-Garrett C |

A great fusion of asian and mexican: pulled short rib beef in yummy sauce with guacamole on soft taco shells. Delicious! My wife's clam chowder was also delicious. Nice ambience, windows with a little bit of street view and very friendly waitstaff.

Really Nice Meal

By adrenalinejunkie2000 |

When I booked the restaurant, I had no idea it was in the Marriott hotel. As someone who travels a lot, I have misgivings about hotel restaurants (some good, some bad but always overpriced). I was a bit skeptical. The cocktails were delicious! Then they brought out the bread that they bake everyday....it was SO good! We both had the kale salad for the appetizer and it was really good with just the right amount of dressing. For dinner I had the pumpkin ravioli - amazing!! Loved every bite. We had also ordered 2 side dishes - mixed mushrooms and the honey baked brussel sprouts; absolutely fantastic!! We were both stuffed as the portions are generous without being huge. I really enjoyed the dinner. And the waitress and other staff - friendly, helpful and they made the dinner even more enjoyable. Good job Level III!

Fast Meal in a Pinch; But Pricey...

By leoclab |

I worked 19 hours straight on my feet and was desperate for food when I returned to my hotel. The thought of even walking any additional steps outside was not appealing so I headed to the hotel restaurant instead. The staff was attentive and understood my desparation for good, healthy food - fast. They delivered and were very helpful. A bowl of their tomato vegetable soup to start, followed by the crab cakes. It was quite enjoyable with a lovely glass of wine. However, I am not sure I would find myself dining in the restaurant with so many other options around the area if I had not been so tired. The meal was expensive ($50 for what I mentioned above) but was absolutely there when I needed it. And I thank them for that!

Fabulous food

By Linda M |

We had breakfast and ate at bar and both times the food was incredible! Great service and very friendly staff.

Amazing service

By Sheri O |

This is a solid restaurant with a menu that has decent variety. The thing that made this a 5 star review was the service! Jacob behind the bar was the best bartender I’ve ever come across. He was very approachable, fun to chat with, exceptional drinks and excellent service. I watched him handle a couple of very difficult customers with ease and kindness. You don’t find many people in the restaurant business like Jacob! I know I’ll be a bar regular when I come back in town.

Tiptop

By exotissima1 |

We found the J W Marriott after being redirected from a plain Marriott (no J W) a couple blocks away that we had mistakenly first stumbled across. When we entered the building entrance, which is set back from the road, there were no signs in a large empty space and no one to help. Very odd for a good hotel! We were eventually guided to the lifts by a passerby only to get into one that weirdly refused to stop at Level III, the main reception. Finally we tried another lift, and successfully arrived. What a palaver... By this time it was 6.15pm and the comfortable, spacious lounge area was full. Sony (who starts at 5pm) had finished her first set and was chatting to fans. We found a table almost directly behind the duo and were then mis-advised by a crabby oriental waitress with poor English. When we asked about happy hour drinks she impatiently tapped the normal drinks menu; when we got our bill later, we had been charged the normal $14+ prices and then had some trouble getting it sorted out as happy hour prices are $7-8 each. We enjoyed our drinks even though they were very light on alcohol, almost none, which must be fraudulent - we're always surprised that such places think no one can tell. At this point we would have awarded a bare 2*. Only because of these reviews did we know there was a happy hour menu so asked another (ponytailed) waitress for it. After that, though, we were sailing. She turned out to be sweet, helpful, thoughtful and eager to help - what a delight. She explained happy hour prices ended at 7pm. What made our evening were what turned out to be exquisite food (and we don't often use the word "exquisite" but it was appropriate here) and the deliciously sultry voice of gorgeous, sweet Sony when she returned after her break. What a pleasure our visit finally turned into. There are only 3 happy hour dishes on offer, each $9. The flatbread pizza with pesto and shrimp, a pair of sliders with belly of pork and pear (an unusual combination which worked very well) and finally the plate of the day turned out to be superb fish&chips. The ponytailed waitress took great care of us, separating our order, as requested, so that each hot dish came out after we had finished the previous one (we were sharing, as usual) and bringing them out piping hot. After the crabby waitress it was such a relief. We left at 8pm, when Sony & Jerry Holland finished, sated with both good food and good music.

Great food!

By kluksik |

I ate here twice this trip. The portions are a bit small but they are very good. They also have a good beer selection and the staff is very friendly.

Lovely music

By Slettieri |

When we went, Sony and Jerry Holland were performing. Such talent. Made the experience so much more enjoyable. Both are fantastic, Sony's voice is amazing. And both were so gracious between sets.

Sony and Jerry Holland raise Level III to a V

By Carson A |

My wife and I have listened to Sony and Jerry Holland for a number of years at various venues in the Bay Area. Sony's pure voice and Jerry's songwriting, adaptations and guitar expertise beat any other Happy Hour experience around - no contest. We had not been to Level III at the J W Marriott until Sony and Jerry began playing there recently on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We have been there several times since and will continue to do so as long as Sony and Jerry are playing. Level III is a fairly intimate lobby bar with a relaxed ambiance. The flat screen is above the bar and does not interfere with the atmosphere. The drinks are well crafted and the appetizers are excellent - in particular the crab cakes, scallops and mac & cheese. The bar and wait staff are friendly and attentive. The fireplace adds a nice touch. The Union Square location is convenient to BART. Happy Hour with Sony and Jerry at Level III is the perfect way to relax after a hard workday or to begin an evening out.

Good Food, Lovely Venue and Great Service

By The_Loup_Garou |

The weather was lousy, and as this was our first stay at the JW Marriott on Mason St, I was glad to have Level III, right in the lobby (3rd floor) of the hotel. I only had time for afternoon wine at the bar, then Lunch the next day (Breakfast included in the Executive Lounge on the 21st floor). I would liked to have had more time to explore the small, slightly eclectic, but interesting menu, and plan to do so, on our next stay. The spaces (both the bar and adjoining, but separate restaurant) are lovely, and mostly open to the lovely, and visually interesting lobby area – the bar is completely open to the lobby, and the most areas of the restaurant are behind glass partitions/curtains, so with exterior windows on one side, then the exposure to the lobby on the other, and interesting venue – intimate, mostly private, but with “views” all around. What struck me, at both the restaurant and the bar was the service. It was friendly, personalized, efficient, and just perfect. The food, sort of took a back seat to that, though was good. I opted for the Strauss Grass-fed Beef Burger w/ chef’s mixed mushrooms, arugula, avocado, truffle provolone. It was cooked to perfection (Medium-rare), and was quite good, though a bit of a departure from my “usual burger order.” It all worked, and a bit better, than I had anticipated. The House-cut Kennebec Fries were in the “OK” category. Had I been paying closer attention, I would have “upgraded” to the Truffle Fries, but there is always next time. Though the menu is short, there were enough tempting dishes, for the next trip there. Now, I would have liked to see a longer wine list, in the B-T-G category. There were enough options to keep me interested for the two visits, but would want more. Now, the “wine list” is in an interesting “folio,” which is backlit, and gives the appearance of an iPad/tablet, but it is a static display. I can see where it would be helpful, especially in the evening, when the lighting is a bit more “moody.” One such folio did flicker a bit, but not the next one. Lovely, and very interesting venue, with good food, an adequate, but small B-T-G wine list, and fantastic service.

Hotel Bar

By Thomas V |

A big open space in a huge indoor atrium with the hotel all around you. When I come here in the middle of the afternoon, it is quiet, peaceful. Cocktails and bar food. Prices are high, no surprise.

In the heart of Union Square and away from it all....

By José P |

Located on the third floor of the JW Marriott this great find will delight your palate. The staff is incredible and so so accommodating. I had a steak and it was perfect! Their fish selections are also great, and don't forget the wine....... I love to come back here soon. We had a great dinning experience and our company all felt it was a worth every cent! Yumm

Good food!

By MauiFan21 |

Offers both off menu and buffet options for breakfast. Even though it's not a large space, it never feels crowded.

Hotel restaurant

Stayed at the JW Marriott and had a dinner here in the bar. Menu was very limited and more pitched at bar food. Food was tasty but a little overpriced.

Wonderful experience

By SanDiegoRoadWarrior |

My family came here on the 4th of July and had a great experience. The pasta dish I ordered was delicious and my husband was very pleased with the chicken dish he ordered. I wanted to give a big thank you to the staff at Level III restaurant for the wonderful service we received. When we got to the restaurant, my 5 year old daughter wanted to know where the chef was. Our server Jason was kind enough to let Chef Fernando know and he took the time to come out and talk to us. We were treated to some complimentary chocolate strawberries and later received a dessert plate and champagne in our room. Thank you for making it a great evening! We came back on July 5th for dinner and ordered salmon as well as the daily catch - food was excellent again!

Delicious food and excellent wait staff

By DEBORAH J |

I had the seafood bisque and the fish tacos. They were both outstanding. Only negative is the pricing - a little more than I would like to pay for a lunch outing, but did not disappoint. The waitstaff were professional and provided great service.

Great food, great music!

By geostrong |

Sharon and I can't say enough about our experience at Level III. Sony and Jerry Holland are there Wednesday through Friday for happy hour, from 5 to 8, and it's the best show in town. The music is truly delightful, and the food is great--crab cakes, falafel & hummus, kale salad, sliders, portabello mushroom sandwich--all tasty and attractive! We've been twice with friends recently, and if only we were free we would be there a lot more. Sony's voice is clear, pure and true, and her delivery brings out the best in every song she sings. The songs range from jazz standards such as My Foolish Heart, My Funny Valentine, The Nearness of You, through contemporary classics, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and the iconic Over the Rainbow, with little highlights sprinkled in -- Elton John's Honky Cat, Rufus Wainwright's Sanssouci, or Dylan's All I Want To Do. For us, the highlights of every time we hear them are the songs written by Sony's husband Jerry, who accompanies Sony on guitar. His songs are so good, the first time I've heard some of them I thought I already knew them as old friends--Chestnut Street, This City is Mine, I Was No Angel Myself, In Marin, just to name a few. Speaking of Jerry, his guitar playing has gotten so good that I would drive into town any day even if Sony wasn't singing--I love it when he takes his solos, and Sony is so gracious and clearly appreciative. This is fine entertainment, sophisticated and playful, romantic and just plain good fun. Just a quick note on the room. Frequently a bar, especially at happy hour, is an awful place to hear music, but the high ceilings and open setting let everyone talk, relax, enjoy their company, and still the music come clearly through.

Excellent and elegant dinner

By Anna Chiara |

I ate here one evening during my stay in San Francisco, an excellent dinner! Dishes of the highest quality both in terms of ingredients and cooking. Elegant atmosphere, very kind waiters! The desserts were also very good! I particularly recommend it if you have a slightly higher budget and if you are looking for a particularly exclusive but also romantic place!

Lunch after check in to the JW Marriott

By gayle p |

After a long flight from Chicago to SFO, we checked into the JW Marriott and decided to have a spot of lunch. It was quiet in the restaurant, Level III, as we were late in the lunch hour, but we were warmly welcomed by our waiter. We had a window table and a leisurely lunch of crab cakes and smoked salmon. It was absolutely delightful . The house Chardonnay is DeLoach which was a delight. So nice to have great wines in your back yard. The service was very attentive and caring. And the food was presented beautifully. It was so good. Exactly what we needed after a long trip. Jason was a wonderful waiter.

Not a late night bar, OK for food

By JVM-Milford-MI |

While staying at the JW Marriott, we thought we’d get a nightcap before heading to our room. We were surprised to learn the bar closes at 11 PM. Just be aware. We also had lunch at Level III and it was good. We had the hamburger, turkey club sandwich and a salad. OK food and decent service, however, somewhat expensive (not a surprise for a JW Marriott restaurant). This is a convenient place to grab a bite or drink earlier in the evening if you’re staying at the JW, however there are great restaurants and bars throughout San Francisco if you want an exceptional experience.

We had a nice dinner here during our stay in May. Good martini's and great food. The service was top notch.

Great Music - Everything else is hit and miss

By N L |

Located in the JW Marriot hotel, Level III is a restaurant with lounge and full bar. Beginning late last year (2013), the restaurant/lounge began featuring live music every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5PM to 8PM. The performer, Sony Holland, is the only reason I decided to patronize this establishment. That being said, over the past 3 months, I've dined at Level III on about a dozen different occasions. The following is a summary of my experiences. First, there are 3 menus if you sit in the lounge (where Sony performs). There is a happy hour menu, a bar menu, and the regular dinner menu. As the title indicates, the food is hit and miss. Some items, like the Rueben or grilled chicken focaccia sandwich are well made. Others, like the Caesar salad and flatbread pizza, are usually serviceable. But a few dishes, like the corn chowder (not the seafood chowder which is pretty good) and the duck, are nearly inedible. The service is also hit and miss. Most servers are both friendly and professional. They work both the lounge and restaurant areas simultaneously, and don't usually lag. Unfortunately, as with most restaurants, some servers are better than others. For example, I had one server on 3 different visits. 2 out of the 3 times I was overcharged. This likely has to do with the fact that the happy hour menu contains the same appetizers as the bar and dinner menus only at highly discounted prices. Apparently, it's fairly easy to accidentally charge the regular instead of the discounted price. Since Level III is located in the hotel's atrium, just a few steps from the front desk, the décor is kept clean and relatively modern. As I stated before, I continue to visit Level III only because of the live music, so obviously I enjoy the atmosphere when they're playing. In fact, I enjoy it enough to keep paying extraordinary prices for less than extraordinary food just about once a week. The hotel is centrally located one block from union square and is very close to several theaters. All in all, not a bad place to grab a drink or an appetizer before seeing a show. And if you go Wednesday, Thursday or Friday night, you'll get to hear some pretty good music too.

Just okay

By jennyclover |

Inside the Marriott, close to everything around Union Square. I was looking for something near the Curran Theater. Service was good, place attractive, but food just ho-hum. Web site said it was vegan friendly, which it was--well sorta. Not much to choose from, mostly veggie side dishes. Had a great stout beer, however.

Solid Meal

By JEH-BV |

We just stopped in to Level III after checking in to the JW Marriott after a long flight. Needed a bite to tide us over until dinner that evening with friends in town. Very good food. Surprisingly light and crispy french fries. Wonderful server. Such a pleasant experience overall. We had happy hour snacks another evening, and that was delightful as well. Live music was terrific. This is a little 'haven' in the city.

Amazing dining experience

We had an exceptional meal with a chef designed tasting menu. The dining room is beautiful and elegant while modern and comfortable. Each course was better than the last.

Sony Holland lights up the Marriott lobby!

By Jeff B |

Sony Holland is a Bay Area treasure and the Marriott is lucky to have her. I have been to that Marriott before and the lobby was just a space used to go from one room to another. Sony and Jerry have transformed it into a nearly magical place. I went to hear them play, having done that at 8 other venues and as it was a hotel lobby, I had low expectations. I was wrong. It was a joy. they played for almost three hours and the time during their short break was spent visiting with guests. I ordered a drink and several appetizers that were quite enjoyable, and thoroughly enjoyed my 3.5 hours sitting in an arm chair in the lobby. I have been in hotels all across the country but that was a first for me. Sony is a consummate artist and it obvious that she puts a lot of thought an effort into craft, so when she sings song after song, whether it is "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," L. Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love," "I Think It's Going to Rain" from The Fantasticks, or "The Autumn Leaves" each song is conveyed with emotion and a deep-seated understanding of the lyrics. On several occasions I have had to fight back tears. Jerry Holland is a perfect match for Sony. They have shared sympathy and understanding, and his guitar work always supports her. I will go back, and back again and again. It is without a doubt the greatest entertainment bargain that I have found in a commercial setting, anywhere. So here is a shout-out to the Marriott for presenting such a great entertainer three nights a week, and transforming a mere hotel lobby into a a magical space.

This has consistently been friendly and good food

By Rick T |

Have been here before, and come back again. Had Breakfast using the Buffet. Great choices, and custom omelette too. plentiful and high quality. Had lunch there with good service and nice food. They have always been attentive and friendly.

Great spot to relax after work and meet up with friends

By Carolyn S |

Try to go when there's live music (Wed - Fri). We caught Sony & Jerry Holland and heard some excellent tunes. The space is really cool, the drinks are strong and the music swings. The location makes it the perfect spot to meet up with friends. Highly recommend.

Ate breakfast here every day

By Adam L |

I enjoyed my hotel rate included daily breakfast. On the weekend they have a decent breakfast buffet with omellete station. The service was attentive Prices are a bit high but expected for hotel restaurant. Do not get the pastries..not made onsite..stick with omelettes

Good Burger & Wines

By The_Loup_Garou |

Good Burger & Wines In October, I walked across from our hotel, to have lunch at Level III, in the Hyatt Hotel on Stockton Street, in San Francisco’s Union Square area. I am not really one to seek out in-hotel dining, if I am not staying at that hotel, but was impressed by the Burger at Level III, so made an exception this time. It was still quite good, as was the service in the bar end of the restaurant, which sorts of has two slightly detached dining areas - the bar, and then a dining room. Being solo, the bar was perfect for me. I ordered the Strauss Grass-fed Beef Burger (medium rare) w/ mixed mushrooms, arugula, avocado, truffle provolone. I also did the “upgrade” to the Truffle Fries, and they were very good, and worth it. The Burger patty was perfectly cooked, with a crisp outside, but a Med-rare inside. It was very moist, and flavorful. The bun was perfect, as well, and not soggy, until the very end. I kept to the limited B-T-G wine list, which was serviceable. My server/bartender did disappear a few times, but might also have been working the other dining area, which while close, was not completely contiguous. In all, a very lunch, and only across the street from me.

Popular Spot

By Thomas V |

When the hotel is busy, there are a lot of folks here for drinks and food. The venue is totally inside the multi-story atrium of the hotel, so rather dramatic but lacking is natural light.

Upscale Atmosphere and Prices

By wessell16 |

Located in the J.W. Marriott this elegant restaurant has a limited menu and is rather pricey. I ended up having the short ribs with resotto and cooked carrots. It was a delicous meal, but a little more expensive then I was expecting.

A trendy bar scene.

By treborz1 |

We visited the Level III bar several times during our recent stay. Happy Hour was great and the bartenders and waitresses friendly and competent. There is an abundance of comfortable seating throughout the lobby area, affording the opportunity for quiet conversation or small group gatherings. Drinks outside of Happy Hour were priced consistent with the market and a good selection of beers and wines available. Other plans precluded our trying the restaurant, but it looked to be nicely appointed. We did hear several of our fellow guests commenting on the good meals they had there.

ambiance a cool vibe in a vibrant city

By Kurt H |

amidst the hustle of the downtown area, there is a place to chill and be entertained by two of the best musicians in the area. The Sony Holland duo bring an otherwise vast and impressive hotel lobby right down to earth. Jerry's guitar playing is singularly virtuosic but the addition of Sony's crystal clear, jazz tinged voice knock it out of the park. Happy Hour indeed! The food and drink are above average and the wait staff let you linger and enjoy. We'll be back.

Just what we were looking for

By colkirk |

After too much eating the day before we were looking for a light salad supper and found this place on the internet. What a pleasant surprise. Not what we were expecting in a Marriott. It's on the 3rd floor in a beautifully designed light and airy space. Plenty of room to be quiet and relaxed away from the noise and bustle of the streets. It even has a fireplace. We started with two of their magnificent cocktails (BSL Juniper and Blueberry Lemonade - both excellent though, at the margin, we preferred the BSL) to chase away the cobwebs and then had the apple endive and the mixed green salads - just what we needed and absolutely fresh. These were so good we just had to go on to try the special mini triple desert (3 for 2) pumpkin trifle (a brilliant blend of American and English traditions which this Brit much appreciated), banana cake and pear tart. All excellent. With coffee all for $68. Thanks Ryan, our gracious and welcoming waiter.

Great for happy hour

By Kay G |

After checking in to the hotel, we decided to visit the hotel bar while deciding what to do on our first day in SF. We each got a local craft beer and apps during happy hour, all of which were very good. We sat at the bar and had an enjoyable time listening to the conversation. It was not too loud even though business started to pick up. We opted to sit at the bar and asked the bartender for a recommendation for a cool local bar to stop at, since the hotel bar closed at 11. Service was great and so was food and beer. Would recommend for a couple of drinks before or after sight seeing!

Wine before the theatre

By Gus94114 |

Poor service, attitude and arrogance from bartender. We were waiting for service at the bar counter and being ignored for nearly 10 minutes. Approached waiter for support and he said it wasn't his problem. We raised issue with supervisor and no service recovery. Bottom line is it's a training issue for all the staff. Management intervention is seriously required. As Marriott elite members and being at a JW it was a pure disappointing consumer experience for us.

Great jazz singer Sony Holland!

By jamesmK2280VD |

In November I heard that Sony Holland had been booked for a standing gig at Level III. She has an incredible jazz voice. Her delivery has so much feeling. If that weren't enough she is movie star gorgeous! The venue is a lounge joined to he hotel lobby of JWMarriott. It is a very elegant place with a fireplace, glass elevators, and a 15 story ceiling. But on my first visit there, the clientele was so mesmerized with Sony Holland's performance. Not a word was said as every eye was concentrated on this talented singer. She finally had to say: "You can talk if you want to." Yes, she is that good. Needless to say, I have made it a point to be at Level III once or twice a week! She sings during happy hour fron 5-8pm We,Th,&Fr. The house martini is perhaps the best I have had at any happy hour. The HH chardonnay by Hess is excellent. The food is unexpectedly good. The best thing on HH menu is the Kale salad with mango & avocado. The pizza (which changes daily) is also good, as are the sliders. The place commonly fills up which sometimes puts a strain on the wait staff. Service has improved of late. The best waitperson is Megan. She always has a smile on her face and is very attentive.

Breakfast, lunch-lots of options

By nuyu2013 |

Food in general was quite good as was the service. A little pricey but that is downtown San Fran. For breakfast, you can have omelettes made and there are plenty of other options as well.

Different style

Fresh, good quality, great service, Interesting décor, fireplace, open area, bar area, you can choose from small bites to full meals. Nice options

Really Great Burger - Yet Again!

By The_Loup_Garou |

Well, this San Francisco - London - San Francisco trip, might well go down as my “Burger Trip.” I started with Burgers on our first stop in San Francisco, had one poor, but one good Burger in London, and then returned to San Francisco, to go for it, at Level III. In San Francisco, I had a “favorite Burger,” but they changed the recipe, and not for the better. I then branched out, but only met with moderate success, regardless of the high praise of the other restaurant. It was after all of that, that I returned to Level III, to see if my previous visit was a fluke. It was not. I started with the same Jordan Russian River Chardonnay, but went to the Justin Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon with the Burger. If I was going to put this one to the test, I wanted a celebratory wine, to do it with. Again, I went with the Strauss Grass-fed Beef Burger w/ chef’s mixed mushrooms, arugula, avocado, truffle provolone. I did remember to “upgrade” to the Truffle Fries, and they were very good, and worth the upgrade. So, the winner is still Level III. Once more, I was seated in the restaurant area, and service was flawless. I did not get to experience the bar, as we were not staying in the JW Marriott. A great lunch, and one that I will return to.

Food was tasty, non special experience

By RDWRERTina |

There is nothing to really complain about. I come in to the hotel and finish checking in just in time for lunch so I head into the hotel restaurant which is empty. Looks nice enough but I didn't expect a $$$$ restaurant for lunch. Nonetheless the lunch menu had some nice options and the short rib lunch was fantastic which is on par for the $23. There was no real experience here, but good food and pretty prompt service. There is not much flare, charm, or uniqueness to it. However, if you just feel like a good meal and willing to drop about $30 for a lunch it's a good investment for the food.

Another Great Burger at Level III

By The_Loup_Garou |

We were back at the JW Marriott in San Francisco on March 06-07, and though the weather was better, than on our previous visit, I wanted to get a Burger at Level III again, as I had been impressed a few months before. Once again, I chose seating in the restaurant area, though a bit more to the front, facing the lobby of the hotel, rather than the nice, but somewhat distant table, in the corner, where I sat on my previous visit. Based on my order before, I went with the Strauss Grass-fed Beef Burger w/ chef’s mixed mushrooms, arugula, avocado, truffle provolone. Again, it was cooked to perfection (Medium-rare), and I am not starting to think that this might be one of the best Burgers in San Francisco. Once, I gave that mantel to the Burger at the Pied Piper in the Palace Hotel, but they recently changed it all around, and not to my liking.. The House-cut Kennebec Fries were better this time, and I hate to admit it, but forgot to upgrade to the “Truffle Fries.” Next time? Also, I have promised myself to branch out, on my next visit, as there are some interesting items on the menu – but then, this WAS a great burger! I still would like to see the wine list expanded a bit, but there was still something to work with, and the Jordan Russian River Chardonnay, and the Qupe "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Syrah went well. The main dining room is attractive, with well-spaced tables, and quite a bit of natural light from both the windows and the atrium lobby. Service was very good, and the closest to a “glitch,” was that I had to convince my server that yes, I did want both a white, and a red wine. I promised, with a wink, to not create a Rosé out of them, when her back was turned. There is also a bar area, adjoining the restaurant, with the same wine list, and probably (did not closely compare) the same lunch menu, as restaurant. I spent a few minutes there, with the wine list, waiting for my room to be ready, the afternoon before. Great service there too..

BEST Clam Chowder Ever

By Brad E |

What more can I say.. It was simply the best Clam Chowder I have ever eaten! Even if you are not staying at the JW Marriott, if you are downtown San Francisco, make it a point to stop at the Level III restaurant and try a bowl.

Fantastic service

By Terry N |

We had just arrived in San Francisco and checked into the JW Marriott. The food was good and the service was fantastic. Friendly, helpful and attentive to our needs.

Tasty food but nothing super impressive

By Beth F |

Stopped here for dinner and enjoyed a few cocktails. The cocktail and wine list had a good selection and the cocktails we sampled were delicious (C-Poptini was a favourite). The focaccia was pretty tasty and our mains of roasted beet salad and fillet mignon were satisfying but not incredible (though the sweet potato fries as per an earlier TripAdvisor review were indeed delicious!)The atmosphere was a little dull for a Saturday night but our server was extremely friendly and enthusiastic. Overall an above average dinner experience.

Date Night

By wax546 |

I work in Oakland during the week, but lately on Friday nights after work I've been walking from the BART station and meeting my wife at Level III. It was recommended to us by friends and I have not been disappointed. The bar area is lovely with cosy chairs, interesting art and a great jazz singer. The food is excellent, and there is a marvelous selection of special cocktails and wines. Sipping on wine and listening to the performers, Sony and Jerry Holland, seems to put my week in perspective and allows me to relax and focus on my wife. I highly recommend this place to anyone who just wants to enjoy a great night out.

Best SF Happy Hour

By jamesmK2280VD |

Have frequented Level III the past few months and keep coming back. The space itself is very elegant and classy. Lounge is in lobby of JW Marriott with its 15 story ceiling and glass elevators. There is a roaring fireplace which makes it very cozy. Now the fare: Great house martini. Kale salad with mango, almonds, and avocado to die for! Sliders and pizza (which changes nightly) consistently good. I have ventured to try some regular menu items too. Crab cakes are great. One of the best things on the menu is the side of sweet potato fries. But the best thing about Level III though is their singer, Sony Holland. She is incredible! She has a soothing voice as she sings sultry jazz to set the mood. This is a great place to meet up with friends after work which I do quite a bit. In fact I am doing just that tonight!

Convenient but a little pricey

By Dax G |

As we were staying in a nearby hotel, we opted to stay close and try Level III. Service was fantastic, filet and scallops were good. A little expensive for the quality, but we were willing to pay for convenience so it hit the spot.

Excellent service and food

By Christy L |

We ordered the cheese plate (selection varies everyday) and it was a very well-laid out palette. Came with a piece of honeycomb, very unique. Husband ordered the halibut special. Very well made. Even the tea selection and presentation was fantastic. More than all that, our waitress was friendly, attentive and fast. Overall great experience and ambiance.

Delicious Hotel Breakfast

Better than Your Average Hotel Property Restaurant

By SeminarTrekker |

July 2009. Level 3 Restaurant, located on the same floor as the reception area for the J.W. San Francisco Marriott, offers tasty non typical hotel property food, like more exotic finger foods and dishes. Service was very good and there is a great atmopshere in this restaurant. We recommend this eating establishment.

great food and what a great new "SF tradition!"

By Caroldress127 |

The elevator opened to the third floor of the JW Marriott, Union Square, and wow--what a wonderful treat to find Sony and Jerry Holland performing. Open, airy and welcoming, the cozy atmosphere makes a perfect spot to stop before the theater--but you might stay all night! Sony's voice is magnificent and her warmth in greeting the audience and amusing banter between songs creates a feeling of belonging immediately. The hummus and kale salads were delicious--and we were eyeing the flatbread pizza and sliders for our next visit! A definite destination whenever we are close to the Golden Gate! Welcome home, Sony and Jerry.

Uninspired

By Scott C |

Ate here for lunch on a weekend. Great views of street below if you like people watching and can get a window seat. Dining area noise was subdued, not bad. The food, while promising some good items from the menu descriptions, lacks on execution. Salad that came with my salmon was overdressed and dripping, salmon overdone (although still tasty) and landed on some bernaise sauce that was not disclosed in the menu and not to my liking. Brussel sprouts were also overdressed and swimming in a half inch of liquid. Service was attentive but the kitchen (despite the above simple menu) is slow. It took 30 minutes to receive food. So, this is fine food if you're desperate, but with so many other options in the area, I won't be returning.

Sony Holland - A Bay Area Treasure

By Michael W |

Sleek style, comfortable atmosphere, great food and cocktails, excellent service. What more could you ask for? Sony Holland. What a joy to find her at Level III every Weds - Thurs during happy hour! With her gorgeous voice and her sensual, yet easy-going style, Sony performs a pleasant mix of standards, along with originals (that sound like they will be standards) written by the brilliantly talented Jerry Holland. With Sony and Jerry, this is the perfect way to either end your day after work or shopping, or to start your evening before moving on to dinner or a show - and definitely the place to meet friends and bring out of town guests.

In hotel spot for a good bite!

By SMR_2 |

After a log day of running around the city, I was glad to see the hotel had a nice little place for a quick bite. Service was very friendly, especially at the bar. Food was good as well, I had the fish tacos and they were tasty, although a little pricey. If you need a bite quickly and don't want to venture too far out from the hotel this place is great!

A shocking experience....

By Reviewer46 |

Went here for dinner on 24Oct and while the food was excellent, the service was horrible. We brought our own bottle of wine to enjoy and the waitress said "i will have to charge a corking fee" (which we fully expected to pay) and we said that is fine. What came out of her mouth next was a shock. She asked "do you need a wine cork to open that bottle" and when we responded, she said "i guess you will need glasses as well". When she brought us glasses, she also gave us a corkscrew to open the bottle! We sat there dumbfounded as to why we would have to open our own wine. We opened our bottle, enjoyed the wine and noticed that she did not fill our wine glasses at any time during our meal. When we received the check, a $30 corkage fee was added to the bill. We were amazed to pay a corking fee for a bottle of wine that we had to open and then fill our glasses. We didn't mind filling our glasses but isn't that their job?

The Place To Be For Great Drinks, Tasty Tidbits and Superb Music

By RNSANE |

How happy I was to return from a six month India stay to find Sony and Jerry Holland ensconced in this elegant lounge three nights a week. The Level III is just the respite to enjoy an evening of music in a serene atmosphere ( though the Hollands can certainly get the place jumping with some of their jazzy tunes ). Happy hour is well deserving of that name and it's "family reuntion" time for all the dos Holland groupies. The drink and menu offerings - the mac and cheese is NOT what grandma used to make but an amazing concoction of Gruyere, Mascarpone, and Parmigiano Reggiano that makes you forget counting calories - are perfect and you can order an entire meal as well. A real plus is that, during happy hour, valet parking is complimentary with a fifteen dollar/person purchase of food and drink. See you there, folks!!!

Good Eats in Hotel Restaurant

By kjbms |

We grabbed a quick bite upon arriving at the hotel. We missed lunch during our flight and dinner wasn't until later. I'm typically weary of hotel restaurant food, but this was actually a very good experience. The seating is an open area on the third floor of the hotel near check in. We ordered sliders, sweet potato fries, and drinks. The quality and taste were no different that had we gone out to a restaurant. Our total was around $60 with tip. Our server was friendly and engaging. She appeared to be working the tables alone so it was a slower pace, but fine for that time of day. We enjoyed our quick bite, and were relieved to be able to quickly get something to eat in the convenience of our hotel.

Great service, OK food.

By Tundra |

Nothing spectacular about the menu, but was a nice meal. Both my appetizer and main were over cooked. Sit by the window if you can to watch the busy street below. Service was excellent! Restaurant is poorly designed in the hotel lobby and next to the separate bar - very loud. Not a good place for a business or personal meal if you want to talk.

Good

Ate here a couple times during our stay at the JW....very good food and service. Excellent mini cookie/caramel ice cream sandwiches!

Scrumptuous Christmas Dinner

By SingleTraveler98 |

A sibling and I have a holiday tradition of meeting in San Francisco to celebrate Christmas. For the past two years we have dined at Level III on Christmas Day, and both experiences have been excellent. The staff here is wonderful. Megan and Joseph took good care of us throughout the meal. We enjoyed both the petite filet as well as the duck breast. Both were prepared to perfection. Salad and lobster bisque were flavorful, and the chocolate fondue for dessert was a clever way to end a meal. We'll be back again next year.

The fish tacos are especially delicious!

By Concha2014 |

It's always a special treat to end a work day with good food, good wine and super music by Sony Holland and Jerry! We get there as often as possible to enjoy Sony's singing! We always to talk it up to our friends and take friends there when Sony is singing.

Great decor and service, yummy food

We had dinner, drinks and apps, and several breakfasts here. The wine was great. Loved the Mac and cheese. Dinner was very nice. We had several great breakfasts. They put fresh fruit on the pancakes and French toast. Service was great. I highly recommend it!

Hidden Gem, amazing food, wonderful service, great value

By TheTravellingPenguin |

My husband and I would not have known about this restaurant had we not passed by it's sign on our way to our hotel in Union Square. After seeing the sign, we decided to look for reviews on the restaurant and looked on trip advisor. It had pretty good reviews so we decided to try it out with our friends. Were we ever impressed! Not only was the service great, but the food was exceptional! We each ordered from the fixed menu: $39 for appetizer, entree, and dessert with $15 extra for wine pairing. For appetizers we ordered the scallops, the tuna poke, and the lobster bisque. For entree we ordered the filet mignon and NY steaks. For dessert we had the cheese assortment and the baked apple. The food was amazing! I personally had the scallops and the filet mignon - the scallops were cooked just perfectly and the sauce it was in was so delicious, the filet mignon was the most tender steak I have ever had. The wine pairing was perfect. The food is very high quality, and for the price it was great value. My friends were not disappointed and neither was I. It is easy to just pass it by because it is on the third floor of the Marriot Hotel and you see nothing but a sign outside, but I highly recommend this restaurant, it has everything: great service, atmosphere, food and value!

Varied menu and decent wine list

By Steve M |

The menu has a variety of choices and I was pleased with each meal eaten here. Entrees were a generous portion.

A Hidden Treasure in SF... Great Music, Service, and Food!

By Joe Z |

I thought I knew all about Union Square, but the Level III restaurant and lounge are a terrific surprise. We were drawn to the place because of Sony Holland, the incomparable jazz singer who started regular performances there Wed-Fri. evenings. That entertainment was excellent, as always... but now check out the incredible lounge, with a soaring atrium, art lighting, fireplace, showpiece bar... wow! You would never imagine such an elegant setting based on the nondescript appearance of the JW Marriott hotel at street level. We found the happy hour menu simple but perfect for enjoying the show, so much so that we stayed through dinner. The service was prompt and professional, and the manager lent his personal touch to make sure all the diners were satisfied. We're going back tonight!

Treated Like Absolute Royalty!

By stingah88 |

I came for breakfast utilizing my Open Table check, and desired a seat close to the bar so I could watch the NFL Draft I also desired internet access to be able to complete my online schoolwork. I checked in , and sat at the bar, where the manage, Katie addressed me by name (very impressive), and informed me that there were private tables with flat screens, and internet plug-ins. She also compted me internet access. I sit here right now, spoiled, fed, working, watching the draft feeling completely attended to. Dave, my current server, and the previous bartender (kicking myself for not remembering his name) have all been phenomenal. This service has saved me so much time, transportation hassle, and I have gooten a lot accomplished. Will be back and as a guest services agent/concierge, will gladly recommend Level 3 to my guests.

Good Food, Service, Ambiance and the Sony Holland Duo

By Gary H |

My wife and I (both professionals) have known and followed Sony Holland for some time now and when we learned that she and her guitarist/songwriter husband, Jerry, had returned to San Francisco late last year after living in Los Angeles for 4-1/2 years and that she and Jerry were now 'regulars' at Level III at JW Marriott in the downtown shopping area of the City (W-Th-F from 5-8 p.m.), we were absolutely delighted, because, now, we are able to see Sony perform with her husband on a regular basis. We did not know much about Level III at JW Marriott but on our first visit there to see and hear Sony & Jerry perform, we were very impressed with the attentiveness of the wait staff (someone was there to greet us as soon as we found two lounge chairs to settle into), the comfort of the room (which reminded me of a large cathedral with the open ceiling from which each hotel guest room floor above looks down onto) and the versatility of the large room (which serves as the hotel's check-in desk, concierge, lobby, bar, restaurant, fountain & sculpture centerplace and fireside lounge). The result of this open atrium setting is not only perfect for people-watchers but offers amazing acoustics for hearing Sony's voice and Jerry's beautiful guitar work. Despite the openness of the large room, there is a softness and muffling effect on the social chatter to allow intimate conversation or casual listening of Sony & Jerry's music. Which, by the way, is beautifu music no matter what musical genre you favor. How that is possible in this very large and visually interesting and nicely decorated room continues to amaze us. Behind the backdrop for Sony & Jerry, who perform in the center of the room and offer their music to the hotel guests after their long day of either work, shopping or sight-seeing, or to locals like my wife and me who come specifically to have a glass of the hotel's wonderful selection of wines, together with an order of crab cakes, a kael or cesar salad (w/chicken or salmon) or a portabello mushroom sandwich, to help remove the stress and tribulations of a long San Francisco work or play day, by enjoying the wonderful selection of songs Sony sings one after another--from standards (Over the Rainbow, My Foolish Heart), to pop (Sansoucci, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover) to original tunes written by Jerry (Chestnut Street, It's An Understatement). No loud, shrill horns. No banging of the drums. No screaming, shrill voice to get your attention. Just the melodic strumming by Jerry on his two acoustic guitars and the velvet, choir-like voice of chanteuse, Sony Holland, that entices you, baits you and makes you want to buy a second glass of wine so that you can stay 'til the end... and to come back another night for more. For three hours of top-level entertainment, one would pay concert prices at Yoshi's, SF Jazz Center and Feinstein's to hear such a duo perform (we know that because we've been there and done that), but at Level III, the price of admission is free. If you're hungry and/or thirsty, the food and beverage selections are reasonably priced, and they are absolutely terrific--and delicious. As for the bar/restaurant service, well, it is as you would expect it to be in a top-notch San Francisco hotel. If you are a visitor to San Francisco on vacation or on business, or if you're a local like my wife and me, and you want to feel like you're stepping out and enjoying life for one, two or three hours, we really recommend that you place Level III on or near the top of your list on your 'things to do on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights'. My wife and I now come to JW Marriott at least once a week when the Sony Holland Duo are scheduled to perform for the sole purpose of 'enjoying life'. San Francisco has always had the reputation of offering the best in music and entertainment and Level III at JW Marriott does nothing to hurt that reputation. 5 Stars to Level III, W-Th-F from 5-8 p.m.

Nice Breakfast

By whatupdude |

We had a really nice breakfast in the the Level III in the lobby of the JW Marriott. We had prompt courtesy service and a good meal. It is very convenient when staying in the hotel.

Great food! Service ruined it

By fstiffan |

JW Marriott is the top of the line for that chain except if the service staff isn’t trained or motivated to make it a great experience. Food was great... fresh, well balance and tasty... but if you have to ask for the water, the bread and the butter. When the fork used for the appetizer is put back on the table by the waitress for the main dish, I call this lack of service and quality. Train your people on what you want the JW experience to be or.... else. Sorry that this was not the evening I was hoping for.

Great relaxed Atmosphre

As guests of the JW Marriot we spent happy Hour on level III and watched the Warriors win yet another game. Great scene, very laid back atmosphere

First Night in City - Reliable Quality

By Joanne |

We were staying across the road at the Donatello and noticed that the Marriott across the way had a restaurant. Having just arrived in the city, we felt that this would be a good place to eat as we could rely on the Marriott for a decent meal. We weren't disappointed. We were quickly seated in the restaurant, which was much quieter than the bar area, and our waitress was both friendly and efficient. She recommended the soup, which was mushroom and just what was needed in the San Francisco summer weather! For mains, we opted for cod, which was served with nice seasonal vegetable and the short rib. Neither disappointed, they were warming, hearty and homey! Having spent a week in the city, this was one of the best meals we had.

Excellent restaurant in a favorite hotel

By sharkisland |

This restaurant offers excellent food. We ate here several times just for late night snacks and were pleasantly surprised. We've tried the beet salad, chowder and crab cakes and all were top notch. Also had breakfast here one morning and the crab cakes benedict were excellent.

Happy hour improved by jazz singer

By Terry D |

My wife and I dropped into the JW Marriott lounge for happy hour and were very pleasantly surprised to hear wonderful live music from a beautiful jazz singer named Sony Holland and her guitar-playing accompanist. We had a most enjoyable evening! Food was good, as was the service -- and great ambience. I recommend this highly.

Excellent Dinner

We had an excellent dinner at the Level III at the JW. I had the lobster mac & cheese and my husband had the salmon. Both meals were excellent. The chocolate chip ice cream cookie was perfect for dessert. The service was very professional, helpful, and friendly. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Hotel Restaurant and Lounge

Very nice lounge with a big bar and a gorgeous fireplace. Morning breakfast buffet is fabulous. Can't go wrong starting and ending your day in San Fran here!

Good drinks, nice ambiance, and jazz standards by the Sony Holland Duo! What else??

By kyriaelise |

After a long day of Christmas shopping, I met friends at the JW Marriott for drinks and was gifted with the beautiful and unforgettable voice of Sony Holland and her talented guitarist husband, Jerry. Before we even entered the elevator for the Level III Lounge, we could hear the melodious sounds fill the building. It was wonderful to sip wine and listen to old standards, some contemporary songs, and even a few Christmas tunes—a great blend of romantic and upbeat music. Between sets, Sony visited every table to greet everyone—what a delightful, modest, sultry, and soothing personality. As for the Marriott, the Level III Lounge was open and spacious and had an inviting feel. The wine we enjoyed was good and very-well priced. The only downside was the slow service initially. We were sitting there for quite awhile before we were approached. However, after our order was taken, we were served fairly quickly. Overall, the Level III Lounge is a nice spot to meet for drinks especially with the added gift of the talented and not-to-be missed Sony Holland Duo!

Pricey! Portions Small

Food was very good - nicely displayed. Service was very good. However, the portions were quite small. If you are hungry this is NOT the place to enjoy an upscale dinner. Dinner for 2 with a couple of drinks $200 US
