Pleasant surprise

By ziggy2720 |

Came to the palmer house for the magic parlour, short of time and it was 5° so we decided to eat at the hotel resteraunt, it is pricey but in comparison to what u will find in the area, it is fair. Good service, small menu, but the steak was very good for a hotel resteraunt, salmon was very good as well. Sides were few, potatoes not great but good bread service, salads were good as well. Would recommend especially if u valet for a show and are pressed for time

Just ok

By WanderingCanadian33 |

My mom and her friend went there for lunch so we went back for dinner. The hotel lobby is beautiful. Steeped in history. The lunch menu is much cheaper then the dinner menu. There is not a great selection, about 7 mains. If you order sides they are 10 dollars plus, ie a backed potato is 10 dollars.

Good dinner at hotel

By Paula R |

We were staying at the Hilton Palmer House hotel and the weather was bad.Decided to eat dinner at the hotel,to our surprise the food was excellent. They have a very nice person at the desk seating guests named Shalonda Williamson. The service was also good.I would recommend this restaurant.

Gorgeous Hotel (Inspiration for the Brownie)

By adrianna24sings |

The Palmer House is elegant and historic. It's located right in the Loop close to lots of attractions. The reason for my visit was to try the famous brownie that was created in the Palmer House Kitchen in the late 1800's. Bertha Palmer requested that the chef come up with a convenient and tasty dessert that could be served to a women's committee at Chicago's Columbian Exposition. Lockwood Restaurant and Bar serves this classic brownie on their menu. I got mine to go in a plastic container with a ribbon. Minutes later I took a few bites of the decadent brownie made with chocolates, nuts, and apricot preserves. In all honesty I've had much better brownies and found this particuliar one to be a bit disappointing. However, I made a few batches from scratch at home because the recipe was included with the brownie. I must say that I prefered my made from scratch recipe better than the one I had at Lockwood Restaurant and Bar. I now make a batch of these brownies every week to share with friends. It's the apricot preserves that make these brownies so unique. Thank you Palmer House!

For a restaurant in a fancy hotel lobby the food is passable. This is not a fancy place but the prices will make you feel as such. Your 20 dollar burger isn't going to blow you away so much as a make you wish maybe you'd gone to Potters Bar or left the hotel.

Beautiful lobby bar/restaurant!

By Kekebert |

We had an opportunity to visit this magnificent place. Excellent ”Flamkuche” -pie, nice service, fab drinks... and art-deco atmosphere - unique experience! One of the must see bars in Chicago!

Lovely food, beautifully served. Amazing location.

By PCBSML |

We were here to see Hamilton and stayed, yet again, at the wonderful Palmer House. Looking online before we came for farm to table restaurants, we were delighted to find that Lockwood was both highly rated and right in the main lobby of the hotel. Great, great food, well served. Attentive staff. Highly recommend.

Good Restaurant

By Jkahn059 |

We had lunch in this restaurant and I love their fish and chips. Other members of the party has lobster rolls, burger etc and every one like the food. Service was excellent.

Good for a hotel restaurant

By Tsaxman74 |

We had lunch in our hotel after a busy morning, and the menu was extensive, the service good. The lobby bar is fabulous and recommended for happy hour.

Great breakfast

By Trish A |

Large selection of breakfast food and our waitress was great. Coffee and tea were there immediately. It is a buffet, also quite expensive. Don't indulge if you're only a coffee and pastry kind of person/

Pricey but delicious

By Nora A |

This is a special occasion restaurant for sure - almost a $300 bill for 4 people. The menu is entirely ala carte so everything costs extra. However, our food was delicious and the service was perfect. We would definitely go again, and would love to try the breakfast. The day we left, their breakfast line was out to the hotel lobby.

Brownies!

By Kandis F |

I did not stay at this hotel but I did partake in a fancy cocktail at the impressive lobby bar. The lobby of this historic hotel is incredible and an architecture nerd's dream. I was in heaven. Speaking of being in heaven, this hotel has the original recipe for brownies and they are amazing. We bought 4 of them to take home.

5 stars for dinner, 4 stars for breakfast

By Toni M |

Palmer House will probably always be my favorite downtown Chicago hotel. That said, I rarely skip Lockwood! First - the bar. The bar staff are second to none. One of the best dirty martinis in the city, don't miss it. Sit in the bar and just enjoy the foot traffic of the Palmer House! If you stay in the hotel and opt for the breakfast buffet, it is a good buffet. The morning Maitre'd is a real treat I hate it that I cannot remember her name. She has been there for years and remembers regulars by name - love her! My only complaint is the layout of the restaurant tables and navigating your way to and from the buffet. It is enough to make you grumble on your second or third morning. If you choose Lockwood for lunch, afternoon drink and bite or dinner you will not be disappointed! The food is sumptuous and the staff excellent.

Exquisitely prepared food at reasonable pricing

By Tony C |

The restaurant serves large portions of deliciously prepared food in a very tastefully decorated setting. My favorite meal here is the Lox and Shmear on the breakfast menu. There is enough food on the plate for dinner. Rather than go through it all, I would just say if you are a bagel and lox person, you owe it to yourself to try this dish

Excellent hostess-waitstaff.

By Margaret P |

This was afternoon Sunday Tea. Had not been the Palmer House in over 20 yrs, it was beautiful. The hostess greeted us and gave us a wonderful table for 3. There was two other tables that had someone there. Our waiter was the hostess, who was WONDERFUL. They give you a French Press for the tea, was OK, not alot of selection, but took the Earl Grey, my favorite. I have to say I buy a better brand then what they offered. The selection of scones was nice but for the 3 of us we only got 5 scones. The mexican chocolate was VERY good and so was the buttermilk. Sandwich selection was great, but the one on the rye bread, with cranberry mayo, the bread was sliced to thick and bread was dry. Other sandwiches were great. Refill on water in the Press was fine, but became tasteless after 2nd time. Dessert offerings were good, but need a better Chocolate offering. THEY NEED TO MARKET THE AFTERNOON TEA SO MUCH MORE, AS NO ON ELSE CAME WHILE WE WERE THERE. Other hotels who offer Afternoon Tea, are usually sold out ahead of the day.

Good but slooooow

By Juancho D |

We are staying at Palmer House Hilton - decide to go down for lunch at around 1 - two or three tables - service started off Good but it became very slow - two sandwiches took almost an hour but they were really good - Also we tried the breakfast - omelletes were not good. Apparently they don't blend ingredients with the eggs - they make the egg and then they place ingredients in the middle - like an egg chalupa - not good. Rest of beakfast menu is your every day of the mill hotel breakfast - 25USD

Dinner before theater

By samoht09 |

Early dinner before theater - seated at stand-alone table YES!!! - personable and attentive service - well prepared and tasty food - portions were just right - ambiance made for a very pleasant dining experience.

Stopped in for the Original Palmer House Brownie! Delicious!

By jazzlady123 |

Heard about the Original Palmer House Brownie on a Food Network Show about places in Chicago. Created for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 by Mrs. Palmer, owner f the famous hotel. WOW! Decadent, chocolate. Perfect for a treat after seeing Hamilton.

Impressive restaurant conveniently located within a Grand Chicago Icon, The Palmer House Hilton

By KazSydAustralia |

The Lockwood is an outstanding restaurant (and bar) conveniently located in Chicago’s Iconic/historic Palmer House Hilton. The foyer, where the bar is located is like a grand art gallery. I have never seen anything like this in the US. The restaurant serves excellent food with outstanding service. I have had breakast, drinks and meals. The choice and variety is enormous, whether you choose the buffet or items from the menu. Quality is consistently good and service to match. The Palmer has been my Downtown Chicago home for many decades. I have never been let down, be it for drinks in the bar or the food in the restaurant. Very impressive. As a Hilton Honours member, wi-fi is free. Thank you to one and all and keep up the high standards.

Good Service

By Traveler |

Meal fresh and reasonable for the ambiance. Convenient as it's apart of the Palmer House Hilton. Waited at bar for meal. Had fish and chips and Pasta Bolognese. No seasoning however I prefer to season myself with salt and pepper.

Lobby bar in beautiful historic hotel

By Sharon L |

The lobby of the Palmer House Hilton is old, classic and gorgeous. The lobby bar is the perfect spot to meet your fellow travelers for a drink, an appetizer or a meal. The surroundings are absolutely lovely.

Located deep inside Chicago hotel

By Two Friends Take |

I searched for pizza and if I’m not mistaken I chose it because it had ‘build your own pizza’. It is located deep inside a grand hotel. We got there and the waiter said they didn’t have pizza just flatbread. Not sure because of the time we visited. ?? The atmosphere was quiet. Reminded me of a Vegas-style dinner vibe. Dim, grand and pricey. Waiter was nice and friendly. I wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking to experience Chicago’s. It was just ok. Thanks.

nice spot!

By Jarred W |

We just went for drinks after dinner. Nice spot. The setting is beautiful. I'd definitely recommend it.

fancy restarant

Meh

By Erica R |

Way overpriced for quality and service. We only ate breakfast there but I’ve had much better service and food at your standard ma and pa shop. Nothing special. Small omelette. Waiter was busy/distracted and I don’t think ever smiled. The young man providing the beverage and coffee service was exceptional however and my mom liked the coffee.

Surprisingly excellent dinner for hotel restaurant

By Madelynn K |

Due to bad weather in Chicago we stayed at the hotel for dinner and had an outstanding meal! Great service, excellent menu. There were four of us and we each had something different, from the burata salad to the flat iron steak (cooked perfectly as I ordered) to the grilled asparagus, which were so good I decided to make them for Thanksgiving. There were other steaks ordered, and pasta as well. Everything was perfect, including the wine, which was not exorbitant. Neither was the menu for a downtown Chicago restaurant. We were all too full for dessert so I cannot make any comments on that, but I am sure they had to be up to the quality of the rest of the dinner menu, including the bread they passed which was also fresh and great tasting. Our waiter was very patient and professional, repeating the various choices to each of us, plus they went out of their way to give us the quietest table they had, as this restaurant is adjacent to the very noisy cocktail/lobby area. I would definitely go back there when in Chicago!

Breakfast started each day splendidly!

By snoopers2948 |

Just returned from a “bucket list” weekend trip to Chicago with my brother, staying at The Palmer House (which deserves 5 Stars in a separate review) for three nights, which meant three breakfast trips to The Lockwood—great way to start each day! Whether enjoying the full buffet or opting for a lighter continental breakfast, the ambience was light and pleasant, the hostess warm and friendly, and our OUTSTANDING server “Jill” just put smiles on our faces to start each day! She even brought us each the famous brownie in a Lockwood gift bag before we left because she had enjoyed US—now that was an unexpected “above and beyond”... I could give 10 stars for the whole experience!

Amazing place to sit and enjoy!!

By Abner T |

If you love history, the history of the Palmer House is fascinating and the ceiling in the dinning room/bar area is stunning. I could go into the entire history if you would like, but just look up the photos of Palmer House. The food was great; the service perfect and the ambiance without compare!

Nice atmosphere on a historical place

By Angel S |

Great idea to transform the lobby on a bar. Great atmosphere, surprisingly good music, excellent service, good drinks and food selection (specially beers). We came twice during our 3 days stay. Thank you Mr Javier, you went beyond expected. Please try to make whisky sour with egg white next time

Excellent food and service

By Beechmom28 |

The food was great, roasted chicken with blue oyster mushrooms. Ordered bread, which was quite a variety with Amish butter and pimento cheese. My waiter, Mo, was very attentive and the service was great

A Wonderful Meal

By Kathryn C |

As you know if you read my review of the Palmer House Hotel it is one of my favorite places and this beautiful restaurant is perfect to be situated just off of the beautiful grand lobby where travelers of all kinds from all over the world check in and out, stop for a cocktail, or a snack and take a breather under the glorious Classical Gods and Goddesses cavorting in the mural above. Going past the large bar and leaving the din of the lobby behind you enter Lockwood's serene, elegant atmosphere. Sheer drapes soften the light of crystal chandeliers, natural materials such as wood and stone make up the walls and booths, a beautiful large glass half wall with an over sized, mirrored arabesque cutout design on it separates the main dining area from the kitchen and service area. The color palette is gentle and soothing continuing the natural tones. This is a white table cloth establishment, and the service is professional and warm. This was my first time eating a meal here. My boyfriend and I were happy from the beginning. He had a Stella Artois beer and I had a glass of a very nice house Cabernet. They brought us a plate of wonderful homemade bread with a soft, seasoned butter and, at our request, olive oil and Parmesan cheese, this alone could have been my meal. Our dinners were Spaghetti Bolognese for my boyfriend. This is a meat(chopped beef and bacon) based ragu served with spaghetti and topped with a generous serving of tender braised beef. He loved it, I tasted it and it was de-lish! My heavenly meal consisted of pan-seared Scallops with black Pearl Lentils, braised baby carrots, and tiny radish greens accompanied by two sauces, dots of a curry sauce and a slash of a slightly sweet sauce. Not exaggerating, it was one of the most marvelous meals I've ever eaten. I can't wait to come here again.

Very good but noisy from bar entertainment

By walt1111 |

Food and services very good to excellent. Limited menu but they do it very well. Only issue is amplified bar entertainment bleeds in dinning area. ( nights only). Ok but annoying if you want a quieter experience.

Uneven

By bsmith447 |

Uneven. One morning: American Breakfast very good, service (Juan and his team) excellent. Next morning: Omelets mediocre, service (Sal and his team) equally mediocre. Both mornings were busy, so I don't think that was the difference. Kudos to the host staff, they were helpful and wonderfully pleasant.

Good Food in Palmer House Hilton

By nycgal529 |

The Breakfast Buffet was included in our room package. The restaurant is very nice and clean. Service was excellent. The buffet area has a lot to choose from - scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, bagels, danishes, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. Everything looks and tastes good. It would be a bit pricey if you had to pay for it - $30 per person for the buffet. I'm glad it was part of my room package.

Great Drink and Brownie

By jordansbulls |

Went here today to try the Chocolate Brownie it was good but the Long Island Iced Tea was great. Great lobby as well as part of the Palmer House.

Breakfast was expensive and Meh

By Bwaz L |

Breakfast was not great but it was expensive. I suggest you eat elsewhere. They have the smallest glasses of orange juice and since it took a while for my omelette to come I finished my juice. I had to order another one and they charged me for it of course

Very nice lunch!

By Harry F |

Had a great lunch at Lockwood. The soup of the day was a tasty ministrone. Creme Brulee was excellent as well. Very good service.

Great bar inside the Palmer House

By Philip S |

Drinks appear quickly and are well executed at this Chicago Palmer House Location. The space, inside the lobby of the famous hotel, is second to none in the city for atmospheric charm.

Just ok

By JB |

Nice atmosphere. Hostess was lacking personality during breakfast hours. The breakfast sandwich was good, and the biscuits/gravy was flavorful. The coffee was not hot.

Outstanding history great food!

By crisilton |

We ordered the salmon and the chicken. Service was very good. The hotel is worth a visit in itself. The lobby ceiling is a masterpiece. Chef Matt and his team does an amazing job. Their rooftop garden produces much of their salads and peppers. The chicken came with all kinds of spices. The salmon included a roe topping! You will not be disappointed. If this review is helpful please give it a thumbs up.

Upscale Bar Food

By KD on the Run |

I enjoyed Lockwood's Flatbread pizza while sitting at the bar of the Palmer House Hilton. Service was quick and easy with the bartender. Food was tasty and plentiful.

Delicious Lunch off Fabulous Lobby

By Virginia G |

Whatever restaurant occupies the lobby of the magnificent Palmer House will always get my business. The food was delicious and the service was discreet and friendly. My sister and I were there for a long chat so the service had just the right amount of studied neglect. A perfect spot for a quiet or hilarious rendezvous.

Breakfast was simple but perfect

By charlespY3110CE |

This Palmer House restaurant, while we didn't care for their dinner menu, was perfect for breakfast. Service was good too.

Very nice meal

By nooner59 |

I had read reviews that it was kind of an uneven place, but I absolutely loved my short-rib pasta. My wife enjoyed her salad, but the pasta was the star! Our gins were quite nice too. I would definitely eat here again next visit. Our corner was quiet and we were lucky to have it, reservations definitely recommended here! Our server was efficient if reserved, we're more fun & sharing folk. No problems, but no engagement either. I won't knock the restaurant for that.

What a disappointment

By OberstA |

This restaurant in the Hilton Palmer House reflects poorly on the Hotel. The food is ordinary, expensive and tasteless. Service is indifferent and slow. It is usually empty. No wonder.

Bad service

By Katherine S |

My boyfriend and I were staying at The Palmer House and were very excited to have a nice meal before catching a show later that night. Our reservation was at 6:15 amd the restaurant was oddly dead as it was Saturday night. We were seated quicky but after about ten minutes our drink order was no taken. Afraid of a frustrating dinner experience at a high price we walked out. At this price the service should be close to perfect.

Poor servive

By Richard s |

I was here with my family. The food was pricey and average. The service was poor. Dinner was almost two hours for an entree only. I have stayed at the hotel many times. The first time for dinner. Not worth the price.

Saturday Brunch Good, Service Better!

By RVIDI |

I have stayed at the Palmer House several times. A few times I have ordered drinks from the Lockwood bar but we stayed in the lobby, not the bar itself. The service was always good but there was no real "test" to see how good the Lockwood really was. That changed when we decided to have Saturday brunch. We were seated around 11:30 am. Our waitress, Rosemary, was fantasctic! I love to be around people who love their job. She clearly does. What a positive attitude. She even gave my adult son some crap regarding an iced coffee. She is very comfortable in her own skin. The buffet is pretty standard. Scrambled eggs, different meats, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, pastries... It was all pretty good for buffet style and the price is pretty reasonable for downtown Chicago hotel restaurant prices. One can order off the menu. Due to time, we chose not to. Frankly, the food did not stand out but how many buffets really do? I gave a high rating simply due to our waitress. This is why I love the Palmer House so much. Consistently, it is the people that make the difference.

Unbelievable experience

By Eloise E |

I literally have no words to describe the amazing experience that my friends and family had Lockwood. The food and the experience is, perhaps, the most important dining experience I have had in years. Chef Matt is king of food! There are not enough stars or circles for me to tell you how wonderful we were treated. Amaz-balls for this venue!!!!!!

Just okay...

By travelmomteacherwife |

We got appetizers, drinks and desserts here. It was good but my expectations were higher. The drinks were good!

the in-house place for breakfast

By tudomany |

We had breakfast here every morning because it was so convenient. The food is fine and the service is good. There was a nice breakfast buffet.

Don't bother...no matter how convenient

By swrCt |

Just had dinner at Lockwood. Lobby restaurant in the Palmer House hotel. The place was empty and now I know why. Just got off a flight , long traffic delayed trip from O'Hare so didn't want to bother to go out. Big mistake. I had a barrata salad to start that was fill with radishes and peanuts?? Really? Peanuts with Barrata? Then ordered the roasted chicken breast with mushrooms and brussel sprouts. Chicken was so dry and overcooked I almost couldn't cut it without a steak knife. Mushrooms? No, there were a few random mushrooms but mostly it was, as described by the waiter, the thigh meat ground up with some mushroom parts. Brussel sprouts? No, just a couple of chunks of what, at some point in their lives, must have been brussel sprouts. Can't tell you how awful the meal was. No wonder no one else was there. Learned my lesson. If you're tired? Go to Potters, the burger bar and have a salad !

Inside the Palmer House so very convenient. Food was good but a little pricey and smaller portions.

By David T |

Dined with family while staying at the Palmer House. Very close to the Oriental Theater so convenient. Dinner was good, but not great, for the price.

Hotel Fare

By Southern Belle |

I was here for business and didn’t know the area well so I chose the restaurant in the hotel. The staff was friendly yet I think it was understaffed as it was busy in the lobby with food and drinks and there seem to be a crowd going to the theater. The food was OK. It was common place nothing out of the ordinary or exciting and it seem to be expensive for what you got. The wine by the glass was expensive but by the Bottle was cheaper. I think there’s a lot nicer places to go if you venture out of the area of the hotel. I also think if you just want a quick bite before the theater and nothing exciting it would be OK. If I was on vacation I would go somewhere else.

High tea - incorrectly charged, no follow up, mediocre food

By KL Kuhn |

Came for afternoon tea service in May. It was fine, not really anything special. I had to ask the server for sugar and cream, and they brought a holder of sugar packets, so that was a bit more Starbucks than 'high tea' Sandwiches were a bit dried out, but the pastries were pretty good. I was near the lobby but not in the lobby, behind a divider, so I can't really say the ambiance was particularly amazing. Maybe I should have done a bit more research, but I was expecting a bit more. When I asked for sugar for my tea, I got a holder with little sugar packets like you see at Starbucks. I was overcharged (my bill versus the price listed online). The server insisted the higher price was correct and being there for a graduation celebration, I just let it go. After I left, I saw I had taken a photo of the menu, and I knew I'd been overcharged. I called in several times, and was transferred to different voicemails. At one point someone told me the manager would 'definitely adjust it', and then no one called back, even despite another two phone calls on my part. The total difference was only $20, but it's expensive enough without being uncharged for no reason, lied to, and ignored when you raise a concern. So, if you're looking to get overcharged, lied to, and ignored for mediocre pastries and tea, this is for you! Otherwise, I recommend going someplace else (had a better experience at the Russian tea room).

Not what you expect at a restaurant located in the Palmer Hotel.

By nestle02 |

The food was over priced and really not even good. I left dinner hungrier than I was when I sat down. Definitely did not return on the other two evenings that I stayed at the Palmer.

Great Food, Great Location

By Martin H |

We had intended to leave the hotel for dinner, but in view of the wet weather decided to stay 'in house'. What a great decision...the food was excellent and reasonably priced for a slightly upscale restaurant and our server, Javier Lopez, was a joy to deal with and really made our evening special. We could use this kind of service levels in Toronto restaurants and will definitely revisit the Lockwood if and when we return to Chicago.

Overpriced and not good quality

By kbs1010 |

The waiter got our order wrong and didn't correct the bill. We also had to wait about fifteen minutes before we were acknowledged and someone came to wait on us.

Not Vegas

By markmillieramon |

Had the Sunday buffet and it was just average. Nicely appointed restaurant but not as lavish as the Palmer house hotel it resides in. The food was nothing to blog about as they say nowadays. The scrambled eggs were cool and the bacon hard, both sins in my world. The selection was adequate and typical. This was not your Vegas buffet. Not hardly. In fact it wasn't even as good as Old Country buffet. The grand Palmer house deserves better. Bring back the Empire room brunch. Please!

The lobby bar is pretty crowded on weekends

By Brimsmith |

Nice bar and nice selection of food. The drawback is that is very crowded on Friday and Saturday night. They do not have a very good selection of nonalcoholic drinks. Sometimes they bring chips, but that seems to be an irregular occurrence

Excellent food, but limited selections

By markers |

Conveniently located within the historic Palmer House hotel, Lockwood provides excellently prepared food, albeit rather pricey, from a somewhat limited menu (the latter especially true for dinner). The setting is attractive, but try not eat dinner here between 5-6:30 pm when the noise from the afterwork carousers in the adjacent lobby bar can be overwhelming. Service is generally timely and attentive, though there is a slightly annoying tendency at breakfast to push menu selections other than those chosen.

Great meal before the theater

By Travel4funnMichigan |

The service and food was wonderful. The fish and chips were outstanding! The server ensured our meal was done allowing plenty of time before a short wlk to the theater.

Two lunches and afternoon tea - all very nice

By NewPlaceFan |

We ate two lunches here this week: one the day we arrived, and one on Christmas Day. We also had afternoon tea here. First, a review of our lunch experiences: Our first waitress was Christina, and she was wonderful - so friendly and helpful. She actually told us about afternoon tea, which is why we came back for that the next day. Not sure why, but we never seemed to get a really good table but rather always one that was off toward the kitchen and twice with a cold breeze blowing through. The lunch menu isn't extensive, but all of the food we ordered was quite tasty. For appetizers, the charcuterie and cheese board is excellent with a great variety of meats, cheeses, condiments, and some bread. The cheese curds are light and delicious. And the marinated olives are savory and a great way to open your appetite. For entrees, the "bbq" salmon was juicy and lightly spiced - not really bbq at all and not sweet. The lobster roll has a LOT of lobster in it. The fish and chips, adult mac and cheese, turkey bahn mi, and steak frites are also all good choices. About afternoon tea: It was an interesting experience and made a really nice, light lunch before a much larger dinner. It is pricey, however, at $55 per person. You can add champagne or a mimosa for $10 more, which is a good option. It comes with your choice of tea (the jasmine was excellent); 5 or so small sandwiches per person such as salmon, egg salad; scones with butter and jam (these were great); and a variety of small sweet desserts. Glad we did it once, but we wouldn't probably pay that much again. We would definitely eat here again whenever we stay at the Palmer House.

Terrible service with inflated pricing

By Lindsey A |

Two years in a row we've had lunch at Lockwood a few Saturdays before Christmas. Two years in a row we have spent two hours sitting and waiting for nearly non-existent service. Two years in a row I ask myself; why? Why do I waste my time and money at this over-priced crapshoot?! NEVER again. I might go to Lockwood/Palmer House to admire the tree, but I will never, ever eat here. And unless you want to spend two hours waiting for a server who you actually have to ask the receptionist about/for every time you need something, I would highly suggest you go ANYWHERE else. Fast food has better service than Lockwood. Where to begin? We arrived with our baby (10-month-old) and asked for a highchair. "You want a highchair?" Uhm, yeah. That's what we asked for. For our baby. Who needs a highchair to sit in at the table... "Do you have a cocktail menu?" I asked. "Let me see if I can find one," she responded. She came back 10 minutes later and said they didn't have any available. I'm going to let that sink in for a while. We are at Lockwood Restaurant & BAR and there are no available cocktail menus? She went back to try and find some and eventually managed to secure one. It then took about 20 minutes for us to get our cocktails. We had to flag down a second person for my mom's coffee (which went empty about 20 minutes later and wasn't filled up again until we flagged down ANOTHER person about it.) It wasn't even that busy! There were tons of open tables! I am so flustered about this. The food was worth about 1/8 of the price you're paying. My pizza was burnt and dry; the lobster roll had more celery than lobster and the $7 fries are worth approximately $2. When we were way-past-due to have received our bill, I asked the receptionist for it. We waited another 10 minutes before our waitress came over. Where the heck was this woman?! Absolutely unacceptable. I get it that the Palmer House is historical and the Christmas tree is magical and the whole experience should be just lovely. But Lockwood is dead wood and I wouldn't spend another dime here - and highly suggest you steer clear of it, too.

Nice Breakfast Off of the Beautiful Lobby

By The_Loup_Garou |

Nice Breakfast Off of the Beautiful Lobby I had breakfast at Lockwood, the restaurant and bar in the lobby of the Palmer House - a Hilton Hotel at 17 East Monroe St, between S Wabash and S State Streets, in Chicago’s Loop. Though I had access to the HHonors Lounge, it only had a limited buffet, and I am not a buffet person. Lockwood is both a bar, and restaurant, as the name implies. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At breakfast, there is a much more extensive buffet, but also á la carte ordering. That was the direction I was headed in. Now, Lockwood is interesting, in that it has a different feel, on either side of the lobby entrance - to the left, the restaurant feels more casual, while to the right, near the bar, a bit more formal. I am not sure if perhaps the right side is opened for dinner? I was seated at a 4-top, in the more casual side, not too far from the buffet area. Many of the tables have a view of the grand lobby of the hotel, which is a very nice thing. Besides the conventional tables, there are several semi-circular booths, with draperies around the back, which can be closed for privacy, or open for the lobby view. Those seemed to all be located along the restaurant’s edge, at the lobby, and to be below the little semi-circular balconies, a level above. I also noticed an enclosed private dining area. It was set up for 6, but think that the table could accommodate 10 easily. It is enclosed in walls of etched glass, and near the attractive wine storage units, in the right hand side of the restaurant. The bar, is two-sided, with one opening into the restaurant, and the other, projecting into the lobby. There was bar-seating on both sides, plus lots of seating out in the lobby itself. I began with coffee, and looked over the á la carte menu. I finally decided on the Country Eggs Benedict w/ buttermilk biscuits, country ham*, and a sausage/cheddar gravy. This was the second “biscuit-based” Eggs Benedict, I had encountered in Chicago. * Here, “country ham” is basically just cured ham, and not the country ham, that one encounters in say Virginia, Tennessee, or North Carolina - that is a different ham, all together. This Eggs Benedict was good, but not great. The biscuits just to not hold up to the poached egg, and sauce/gravy, like a good English muffin does. I love biscuits, but have yet to find one, that is a great base for Eggs Benedict. Also, the gravy was a bit overly salty for my taste. I suppose that I am more of a traditionalist, when it comes to my Eggs Benedict. Service was spotty - mostly good, but with my server disappearing for long periods of time. The room was not even close to being filled, so it was not a case of having too many active tables. I had to flag down the hostess to get more coffee. Even being open to the lobby, and even being fairly close to the buffet area, my table was fairly quiet, and the lighting good. I did not get to experience the bar, due to hours of operation, but would love to sit on the lobby side, for a glass of wine - next stay, perhaps? The venue elevated the experience, as the service was just OK, as was the food.

Beautiful Place

By Nina P |

The hotel lobby is beautiful. The place was just okay. Stopped here for a nightcap before bed. Drinks were excellent, service was alright pretty crowded for the time so I we couldn't get any seats. Overall a very nice place.

Slightly pricey- GREAT location

By Layla117 |

I loved the historic lobby. The service was great. I took pictures to send to my family. This is a nice restaurant OR you can sit on the lobby. I had fish in chips, a bit cheaper. But definitely would come again- relatively quick service too.

Bad Experience for a Hilton

By Robert G |

Breakfast was a unfortunate experience not only for the service, but also for what they recommended as their most requested breakfast item, Eggs Benedict. Our water glasses were not filled and we had to request this. Eggs Benedict arrived with cooked poached eggs, and a bed of lettuce on top of the egg. The egg should be runny, and spinach should be under the egg not on top. Our server was did not come back to receive my payment and I had to go to the front to ask if they wanted my payment. Unheard of. My complaint was resolved with a 20% discount. That was a disappointment also. I would have expected them to have their act together better than this. Will not go back.

Had a decent breakfast

By HWPKG |

Love the historic Palmer House decor. Excellent service; very prompt refills on the coffee and also very promptly served our meals. The omelette was very good. Good ingredients, good preparation and flavours. All in all, a good experience and decent value for money.

Great place after Hamilton

What a beautiful bar! The historic lobby is gorgeous and a great place to wind down after a great theater show next door. Loved the ambiance.

Quick Bites and Crispy Fries

By Tanya T. |

We arrived famished and were seated immediately. The restaurant was rather empty and likely doesn't draw a large crowd for weekend lunch. Service was quick and friendly. We both ordered the falafel wrap with fries, which were very tasty. The portions were generous, and the fries were golden and crispy. The price was reasonable, considering the location. I would dine here again, but I don't think there are many options for me besides salad and the Falafel wrap.

Slow but Excellent service

By Vlai |

The restaurant is located in the Palmer House hotel. we were staying in the hotel, and were too tired to go out for dinner after 12 hours train ride. I called to the restaurant for reservation and was told I was able to walk in easily. We easily found a table (free sitting) and a waiter came, but he was very busy to clean up the tables. The lobby was always full of people, we were glad to find a table in the restaurant. it took him some time to serve us, but he was very thoughtful and he split the food for me and my daughter because we were sharing. We also had the famous brownie ($9), I was intended to order the room service, but the charges for a brownie will cost over $20 before tips with the delivery charges and taxes. So, we decided to have it at the restaurant. for $30 more, we can have a nice dinner. Overall, good food but prepare to wait for food

Very tasty food and prompt and caring service

Server explains and guides nicely based on the specific food requirements for each of the team members.

Nice Surprise

By RedRose030377 |

I could not stop staring at the near-decadent lobby of the Palmer Hotel. My friend at I decided to dine at the Lockwood to continue taking in this view. It was surprisingly affordable and tasty, with an interesting range of choices. My favorite was the lobster roll. The house-made carrot cake is a delight which should not be missed. Service was impeccable.

Limited menu but delicious dinner

By GramC8410 |

We were staying at the Palmer House for a convention. Because of the cold and wind, we decided to eat in the hotel two of the three evenings we were there. In spite of the bar being packed with people, the Lockwood restaurant was not at all crowded - no reservations needed even on Saturday night which surprised us. There were several options for salads. I ordered the mixed green salad for $8 which had a very light vinaigrette and was the perfect size. Unfortunately there were no soup options which would have been nice on a cold night. The first evening I ordered the scallops which were delicious! There were only 3 but they were huge. My husband ordered the striploin which he said was fantastic (and he is quite particular about steak!). It was done just as he had requested - medium rare. The second night I hesitantly requested the "bbq" salmon. Coming from Massachusetts via Texas, I was a bit suspicious of "bbq" fish. However, the salmon was perfect. The spice was mild and gave the salmon just a hint of extra flavor. I did not have a very big appetite so I did not need a "$10" side. The prices seemed fairly reasonable for a downtown restaurant but be aware that all sides are an extra $10 which seems outrageous. We found the staff to be very attentive without hovering. OJ was our server the first night and Stella waited on us the second night. Stella answered all our questions about the menu and offered suggestions when asked. Both she and OJ were friendly and made us feel very welcome. There was another staff member who always made sure water glasses were filled and plates taken away when finished. We would definitely return here and were surprised that the restaurant was not more crowded. The bar area outside the restaurant can be quite loud, so both nights we requested a table farther from the entrance which was just fine.

A Great Hotel Restaurant? Yes, sir!

By Chris K |

Lockwood Restaurant and Bar inside The Palmer House Hilton is absolutely wonderful. As most travelers know, the hotel restaurants are typically good but not necessarily great. Lockwood is the exception to this rule. From seating to atmosphere to service with a sincere smile and food to shout about, this place rocks. Highly recommend the Lockwood Burger (the raspberry jalapeno jam and pickled onion condiments are out of this world!) The Bolognese pasta is exceptional, too. Christina's service and attention was top drawer.

Early morning breakfast on our last day

By Liz P |

We dined at the Lockwood Restaurant on our last day in Chicago. The breakfast buffet is a little pricey ($30) so I ordered ala carte, the 3 egg omelet which is garnished with blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. My husband ordered the short stack of pancakes, plus bacon. We shared all of our food. Our waiter early Sunday morning was great. He was attentive even though our table was not his regular table. He kept our coffee cups full. He brought extra syrup to my husband. The short stack has huge big fluffy pancakes. The bacon was crispy and delicious. The 3 egg omelet was good.

Won't be back

By Heather |

I waited 20 minutes and was never approached by a server so I went to the bar instead. I had a Bertha's brownie, truffle fries and tomato soup. Everything was average, and the service wasn't that great either.

Afternoon Tea

By jlm1949 |

My daughter and her friend took out the moms and it was wonderful! The room in the Palmer House was just beautiful. The tea was wonderful and our waiter was quite attentive. We had champagne before, and all the little sandwiches and desserts. Not cheap but something special!

Iconic bar

By RDH |

Beautiful hotel/bar. Our bartender had worked there 40 years. Stopped for an over-priced drink and appetizer. Fun, memorable experience. The mushroom tartare is fair. Nothing to brag about, but the atmosphere is historic and gorgeous!

Pleasant Restaurant

By Feenixwest |

This restaurant just off the beautiful lobby has white linen table cloths and its own elegant atmosphere. As part of a group I had breakfast here every day and about three dinners. The breakfast had something for everyone and tasty. Only complaint is that the melons were not ripe and it seems like the kitchen could preorder and let them ripen. Dinners were pleasantly served on the plate with fresh herbs sprinkled. I tended to order fish and was not disappointed. Note the Tiffany sconces.

Wonderful Dining

By Gwen K |

I LOVE the Palmer House Hotel. Dining in the Lockwood is icing on the cake. My steak was perfectly cooked, tender and moist. I also had breakfast there every morning and it was very good. Order a cooked to order omelette from your waiter/waitress. Loved my waiter, Tony, he’s a gem!

Very expensive, yet average

By Debeatle |

We had to move to Lockwood for dinner, as Potters Pub was closed inexplicably. Party of 8 with two children. Slow service. Waiter forgot to take drink order. Trout was really good. Lobster rolls were good. Steaks were good. The 10 oz steak looked closer to 7-8. Bill made me feel like I should have been a lot more impressed by the service and deliciousness. Won’t likely go back.

Very good food, stunning lobby, service a bit lacking

By Ken C |

As hotel guests we had an early dinner before going to Hamilton -- extremely convenient. The food was very good and attractively presented, however, our service was a bit lacking. Once he brought our food, we didn't see him again until dessert (I was hoping to get some pepper.) The whole restaurant and particularly the lobby bar is a step back in time back to the gilded age--stunning!

Palmer House Dinner

By Julie W |

Went there for dinner on a weeknight w/ a few work colleagues. We were seated right away and I ordered the scallops w/ the corn & chili on the side. The food was delicious and elegantly served in this elegantly appointed restaurant. There were not many other diners so we were perplexed that the service was so slow. One of our group actually had to go find someone to get our check. Shift change, maybe? In summary, the food and ambiance were great. But the service was disappointing.

Expensive for breakfast

By ArtisticBeth |

It was a treat to stay in the hotel. As I was alone for breakfast, I chose to have a special breakfast. The service was excellent as my coffee cup was kept filled, which was a good thing as $4.50 for coffee. I ordered an omelet which came with a little fresh fruit cup, no bread. With tip my breakfast was $24.00.

Great service

By elbridgestreet |

Tony, in the Lockwood Restaurant was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I appreciated his care and attention while I enjoyed breakfast on my own.

Freezer food reheated???

By Karen P |

No kidding. What we got, in addition to poor service was what seemed like frozen fish and chips from a third rate grocery store heated up. It was dry. The crust was large crumbs adhered to the dry fish. The scallops were mostly raw. We didn’t see our waiter anywhere. And it wasn’t all that busy for him to totally ignore us after serving us The carrots on the scallop plate were raw or near it and I only saw one teeny one on my husbands dish. That was it for his vegetables. I advise staying away from this tip off restaurant. Go to the Berghoff just down the road. I wish we had.

Pricey but great food

By Deborah W |

Conveniently located inside the hotel, this restaurant served a good range of menu choices. The food was excellent as was the wine.

Great visit

By Burkhard042 |

We stopped at Lockwood for cocktails and snacks. Entering the lobby is very impressiv and alone worth visiting. The classical margarita on the rocks was the refreshing drink we urgently needed at a hot day like this. The Palmer House Fish and Chips - excellent. Two juicy and crispy pieces of cod, fabulous chips and cole slaw. Therefore this spot is highly recommended.

Home of the Original Brownie!!!

By russcox |

This restaurant is located in the Palmer House Hotel, a Hilton Hotel. It's worth going into the restaurant and lobby area of the hotel just to see this area. With most of the items are still the originals. It is beautiful and ornate. Beautiful fixtures, paintings, ceil paintings, woodwork, etc. You don't see places like this anymore. We went there, not to eat lunch, but to have a brownie. It is here that the original brownie was first offered at the the 1893 (date may be wrong) World's Fair. The brownie came with cherry ice cream on top and was delicious. The brownie was $10, so $12 with tip. But to say it you had a brownie from the place that produced the first brownie was pretty cool and worth it. The brownie is rich and one brownie can adequately serve two people. I did look at the lunch menu. Prices ranged from $15 to $25. More than I like to pay.

Good Food and Service

By JDA60 |

The food is good and the service is good, a little bit pricey but in line with most hotels. I can say that anything was exceptional but it was good.

Brownie and cappuccino

By spain298 |

We decided to come here after dinner around 9 pm on a weekday to try their brownie since the brownie was created here at the Palmer Hotel. The brownie's texture was silky/creamy. If you like fudge, then this may be the brownie for you. It was good, but I generally prefer brownies to be more like a dense, chewy cake, so this was not my ideal brownie. They closed off the restaurant section, but still served food and drinks at the bar section. Service was excellent. The lady at the bar was always doing something, but was cheery throughout. The brownie was worth trying though if for no other reason than for the atmosphere. The atmosphere was amazing. Who knew from the exterior that the lobby/restaurant was so big and beautiful. It's like stepping back in time. There was an excellent vibe. I will definitely consider staying at the Palmer Hotel if I'm back in Chicago just so I can hang out in the evenings in the lobby. Most people were drinking and socializing. Some were eating. It was full but not overly crowded.

Food was good, and the price was not too abusive

By Pauak |

Used to overrated, overpriced hotel restaurants this one is an exception. The prices are decent for a steakhouse, with steaks in the $40-50 range and you can get a drinkable wine for $40-50. We had octopus as an appetizer, and it was good enough although the portion was way too small (even for 2 people to share). My ribeye was perfectly prepared, and really tasty and tender. And I recommend this poached egg and grits as a side, and excellent combination. Servers all good and effective.

Vastly better than the usual hotel restaurant

By David T |

Often a hotel restaurant is average or a bit below -- not here. This is a restaurant that you could visit even if not staying at the Palmer House. A wide variety of choices and very well done. The noise of the hotel foyer disappears when you come into this inviting and warm place. The service is excellent.

A typical hotel restaurant

By Richard G |

Nothing special. As others have said, menu is very limited, and prices are sky-high. There are much better options else where.

Early Christmas Gift

By Jean S |

We ate breakfast in the Lockwood both mornings. We enjoyed the buffet. We also could have ordered omelettes prepared to order or other items like waffles or pancakes. Table service was also excellent.

Pricey but the atmosphere was good

By Edward W |

I experienced sticker shock seeing all of the prices for things here. I picked up three desserts and two drinks and set myself back $100.

Chicago-Priced Food and (Amazing) Service

By The Autistic Traveler |

I ordered the chicken for dinner the night I checked in to the Palmer House (in which this restaurant is on-site), and, while pricey, it tasted delicious. The ambiance is elegant and cozy, particularly when there’s live music playing in the grand hotel lobby (the restaurant and lobby are technically separate places, but they all essentially blend together since there aren’t any doors between them). The waitstaff delivered exceptional customer service, attentively refilling my water and even offering a brownie on them! Wow! So generous. For breakfast the next morning, I opted for pancakes, and they were fluffy and fresh. I had no regrets. Thanks to the team at Lockwood Restaurant for their top-notch hospitality and professionalism!

Breakfast at Lockwood

By Irina |

I was in fairly early, so I was seated fairly quickly by a stern, frowning hostess who was displeased with something or somebody, it looked like. It was a Sunday morning. Lockwood Restaurant is quite spacious, with various seating options, it easily accommodates small and large groups of guests. The ambiance in Lockwood is generally welcoming, the lighting is soft and pleasant, the decor is contemporary. I chose to have their Lockwood Breakfast Buffet (a set price of $30), that offered a wide selection of both hot and cold items. Traditionally, these items are pretty much the same in any restaurant buffet, in any hotel. But here they were fresh and tasty. The server was friendly, grapefruit juice was excellent, coffee was timely refilled, and it also tasted fine. When I was leaving the restaurant, there was a huge crowd of customers in the hotel lobby, lined up to the restaurant entrance. The same hostess was greeting them. Holiday times ...

Great Breakfast

By Sue S |

Had breakfast here before heading out to explore the city. Great food and excellent service. The bacon and eggs American breakfast was perfectly done. The scrambled eggs were prepared fluffy and appealing just the way I like. Biscuits and gravy and pancakes were great too. It is expensive but so very convenient. Food came in less than 15 minutes.

Lockwood Revisited

By Irina |

Lockwood Restaurant is located at 17 E Monroe St in The Palmer House Hilton hotel (aka Palmer House) , in Chicago Loop. The entrance to the restaurant is from a historic, grand lobby of Palmer House (built in 1871). Lockwood Restaurant opened to public in 2007, it had undergone a renovation in 2013, and during the pandemic it was closed to public. I've been in this restaurant before, when staying in Palmer House. Lockwood is a fine dining restaurant, serving American cuisine, the menu is vast, detailed, and offers a variety of meals. At the entrance to the restaurant there's an exquisitely and modernly designed full bar, that looks rich, opulent, festive, and always busy with customers; the bar also serves drinks for the guests, dining in the restaurant. As far as the food, my lunch at Lockwood was excellent. Chicago Chop Salad, with Chicken Breast (added a la carte) was delicious. Upon request, I was given some tasty toasts to accompany the salad: somehow, the restaurant didn't serve bread with salads. The size of the salad was very large, so it was great to have hot tea afterwards. Lunch was finished by having some Hennessy cognac, which was excellent, as well. The restaurant wasn't too busy at that hour, the ambiance was quiet and relaxed. The service wasn't too fast, but it was attentive enough and friendly. The servers seemed to work on a team principle, helping each other. Lockwood Restaurant, thanks for lunch and hospitality. Until next time, and Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving Dinner

By Scout_Mom1 |

Wonderful Thanksgiving buffet with family. Perfectly cooked Turkey, and so many wonderful entrées to try. Excellent wait staff!

Just ok

By Hope |

My husband had the 45-day dried ribeye and I the chicken thigh dinner. He said ribeye was tender. Chicken thigh was ok, nothing spectacular. Carrot cake was described as “made in-house”... just average. Chicken was to have “Brussels sprouts” as a side and there was literally 1.5 Brussels sprout on the plate—-and maybe three tbsp of “mashed potatoes”. We had breakfast here the next morning... and again ... just ok. The hotel nor restaurant are anything I would go out of my way for.

Not the best

By Durwood N |

The food was excellent at dinner, and at lunch, breakfast was disappointingly pedestrian. That would not normally cost me to downgrade it a little, but the service was so inexplicably slow that I didn’t want to keep going back to the restaurant for breakfast. Everything just seem to take forever. The personnel were all very nice and very helpful, but I fear that the kitchen it’s just very slow and a bid in consistent as well.

Love the Lobby Bar

By Susan D |

We had drinks and flatbread Margarita pizza in the lobby bar. It’s a lively scene. The service was excellent and the dirty martini with blue cheese olives fantastic. Loved it all. The space is just spellbinding.

Nothing to write home about

By jpeiser2014 |

I went there with my wife to celebrate her birthday. The waietrs were OK. It took a long time from ordering of the food till we got it finally. Both of us had a steak which was OK, but no more. I will not dine there again.

Lovely bar with good nibbles

By Mme_X |

Quick review: atmospheric bar in the Palmer House. Not cheap, but reasonable prices for the environment. Service can be busy, but you and do-it-yourself. We stopped by between a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago and a dinner reservation for a theater later than evening. This place is a lovely art deco environment in an historic hotel. While there is a bar that was busy (we almost got seats, but another couple jumped in,) but there are also nearby tables for chatting and for working on your laptop (unfortunately.) Crowded out of the bar, we snagged a table. The waitstaff was busy, and we were timing a dinner reservation, so that my husband went to the bar himself and brought back our drink order to the table - no one seemed to mind. A leftover bar tab wallet on our table showed that there was table service, but no one came to wait on us before my husband went to the bar to do-it-yourself. Someone came to collect it after he had brought drinks back to our table. This is another great place to discover craft beers ($7.50) as my husband was very pleased with his IPA. I'm a win drinker, adn had a good rose by the glass ($11, with most glasses on the list $11 - $12.) they also do priceds by glas-and-a-half, and bottles, all r=fairly reasonable for big city prices and the nice location. There is also a full bar, healthy list of suggested cocktails, tequilas, etc. There are some good nibble that we might return for some day - a cheese and charcuterie plate ($23), cheesy flatbread ($14,) burger adn fries ($18), etc. Caviar tower if you must: $45, or fish sicks ($12.) I can't say much about the service because there was none. My husband "waited table." The good news is that no one seemed to mind - no hassle from the waitstaff when they appeared. The room is lovely - an historic hotel lobby from anotehr grand era. You feel like you are living the high life, and at least the quality of the drinks experience is worht the tab. Due dilligence: the hotel probably has free wifi in the lobby, but not in the rooms. There was someone hogging a good table just on her laptop - no drinks, etc -- and it would be nice if she moved elsewhere so the drinks-paying corwd could get the table and enjoy the ambiance. Something for the management to think about.... When you are in the Palmer hosue, also check the delightful apothecary that is part of the street-front hotel complex. It's from another era with uniwue toiletries and personal care products in a range of prices.

Great food

By MusicTraveler2 |

Wonderful food and drink. Service our night was a little spotty but the manager more than made up for it with apologies and a few drinks. Tipped a C note just so they knew no hard feelings and as a thank you. Fun time!

Excellent Dining Experience

By BillM551 |

Dinner at Lockwood was perfect. We were truly astounded by the hotel's decor and artwork. It was absolutely amazing! Food and service were excellent. My wife ordered the caprese flatbread; ingredients on the caprese flatbread were fresh and tastey. I never heard of mushroom tartar, so I had to order it. The mushroom tartar was made of beech and cremini mushrooms and included cornichosn, capers, mustard, and bernaisse mayonnaise. It was cold and perfectly flavored. I ordered sea scallops for my entree. They were accompanied by spring peas, asparagus, and roasted heirloom carrots. This entree was artfully arranged on a slate. Scallops were perfectly cooked with a light sear and maintaining a succulent texture. My grandson devoured a hamburger patty and French fries. Food was great! Service could not have been better. The waiter was attentive and patient in describing dishes. This was the first time that a server who delivered our plates carefully and thoroughly described the ingredients and preparations. Treat yourself to dinner at Lockwood while visiting Chicago.

Elegance All Over

By Henry I |

Just walked into the Palmer House to look at the place. My wife and I were stunned by the glamour and elegance that carpeted every inch of the insides. We took a seat at the lobby bar and had a couple of glasses of wine and just people-watched. The wine prices where higher than average, but it was worth it just to walk around and take in what we couldn’t really afford. :)

Average person not recognized

By leblanccj |

Stopped in bar on way to Hamilton for drink around happy hour. It was busy with a convention. Had to go around to ‘backside’ of bar as there were few seats. Our bartender seemed to do everything he could before recognizing us. He refreshed drink of lady to our right, went to front of bar to check on customers, came back and took care of lady’s husband who showed up...never acknowledging we were there. We felt ‘shunned’. This is upper crust bar but we were NOT welcomed. We did get a flatbread when we got his attention. That was good. His coworker opened our 2nd expensive beer. Won’t go back! We tip as well as anyone! No reason to ignore us.

Great food, service and location

By diznymom0 |

We stayed at the Palmer House when we visited Chicago to see Hamilton. Upon early arrival, we dined at the Lockwood Restaurant for their breakfast buffet. It was delicious. It was a bit pricey ($100 for 3 adults--including tip) but worth it. They have a large selection including fresh fruits, pastries, cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breads, yogurts, juice and coffee. In addition, if you order the full buffet, you can order omelets and cook to order eggs. The omelet was served very hot and was delicious as were my daughter's cook to order eggs. They also had a delicious bread pudding served with maple syrup. Our server, Adam, was polite, quick and anticipated our needs. Our coffee cups and juice glasses never ran empty. Highly recommend.

Good food, service and ambiance

By qmiller1 |

Lockwood is located in the lobby of the Palmer House Hotel (Hilton property). The hotel is historical with a beautiful and always buzzing lobby and lobby bar with excellent cocktails. The restaurant is right off the lobby and has a small but quality menu, consistent service and nice ambiance although acoustically it feels like you are in the lobby bar. I stayed at the hotel and also had several of the dishes for room service from the restaurant which were all good (lobster roll, hamburger and margharita flatbread) which were all good. Of course there are many amazing restaurants in Chicago which are better to try first (see my other higher reviews). But if in the area or at the hotel, it is a good meal, better than most hotels.

Only a Buffet operating!

By Corrib |

We went for a pre theatre dinner, but only a Buffet was operating, possibly due to the fact that there was a hotel workers strike on at the time. The Buffet was very limited in choice, but what there was would have been acceptable if it had not been cold. The drinks service was very slow. To be fair our complaint about the food was acknowledged and reflected in the check.

Excellent service

By tanya0e |

We didn't bother leaving the hotel when this restaurant was located onsite and provided such excellent service.

Excellent food!

Enjoyed breakfasts each day and dinner one evening. The food was excellent. The staff are friendly and courteous. Drinks at the restaurant bar in the lobby was an excellent stop in the evenings.

What You See Is What You Get!!

By Jesse W |

I was here on business and had the pleasure of staying in this gorgeous hotel! I was tired but very hungry when I arrived and decided to try out the Lockwood Restaurant conveniently located on the first floor. Because the hotel is absolutely breathtaking, I made the assumption the food would be astronomically high...I was wrong! I was pleasantly surprised the food AND drinks are fairly priced and worth every penny! I had the Lockwood Burger which read on the menu like heaven on a bun... It was! MY God, it was heaven in my mouth! To add some liquid heaven to my Lockwood Burger, I ordered a Manhattan from my now favorite waiter in Chicago, Ahmad. Folks, I tell you this, I was so high off that heave in a bun and that liquid love, I came back the next night for seconds. Yes I DID! My experience was so awesome I told everyone on my team at PWC about my heavenly experience. This is a MUST see Hotel and Restaurant the next time you're in Chicago. What you see...EXCELLENCE is what you're going to get!

Breakfast in the AM, cocktails in the PM

We have the full English breakfast each morning when we stay at the PH. It is substantial. Our favorite server is friendly Tony. At night, before bed, we have cocktails at the lobby bar and enjoy the impressive room and ceiling. Recommend both rituals.

Mixed experience

By Cherry_Wonderdog |

Decided to give Lockwood a try on a Monday night after having thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast buffet there in the morning. It was an opportunity to get some good quality meat for a change, especially the aged variety which, on my list, is hard to beat. There were plenty of tables from which to choose when we arrived at around 6 PM. We were promptly seated at a semi-circle booth in view of the Palmer House lobby and greeted by a courteous waiter who fetched us water and bread with fresh butter. Our appetizers were the Cesar and arugula salads, the latter combined with red quinoa, parmesan cheese, grape, and walnut-honey dressing. They were okay, not terrific, as if they were prepared well in advance. The Cesar salad could have benefited from fresh parmesan cheese. The arugula salad would have been better from a taste and texture perspective without the grapes. For dinner, we originally ordered two of the dry-aged, rib-eye steaks, bone in, but when they discovered that they were out of stock, the restaurant offered to swap out one for a larger bone-in ribeye that was only semi-aged. In comparison, the dry aged had a more distinct flavor, and the larger semi-aged rib-eye was overcooked on a good portion of its perimeters. Only the center of the meat ended up rare as ordered. Unfortunately, the smaller, boneless dry aged rib-eye was excessively fatty – upwards of 75% ended up inedible. I was not pleased with the waiter’s assurance that he would “tell the chef" which resulted in no bill credit whatsoever, despite the evidence from the steak remnants. (See photo). His attempt to placate us with a couple of brownies felt insulting. We ordered a couple of sides with our meat, because everything at Lockwoods is a la carte. Their Yukon potato, demi-chive puree was quite good as were their exotic mushrooms and truffle, with Chanterelle, beech, hen of the woods, matsutake, and black truffle mushroom varieties. But at $24 for both, it seemed a bit over the top. To complement the meal, I selected a large glass of their sole Californian Zinfandel, since I was the only drinker that evening. It was alright but clearly among the lower grade of my once favorite reds. In fact, I found the wine on Vivino at only $12 per bottle, whereas the glass at Lockwood cost $15. It’s this type of markup that rubs me the wrong way. For a restaurant of this caliber serving high mark-up $50 steaks, they should be serving better quality wine that matches the quality of the food without gouging the customer by the glass. In all, I walked away thinking that Lockwood missed the mark for us. We paid a lot, but the quality of the meal in all respects was inconsistent to say the least.

Nice lunch at the Lockwood

By NewPlaceFan |

Nice tasty menu choices for lunch at the Lockwood restaurant. The Charcuterie appetizer was generous with high quality meats, cheeses, and accompaniments. The cheese curds have a very light tempura breading and a great sauce. They aren't quite like authentic Wisconsin cheese curds, but still quite good. The lunch salads were fine, and the lobster roll was also tasty. The service was good as well - neither too fast nor too slow. The cost seemed moderate, at least for lunch. We might try dinner here some day on a subsequent stay at the Palmer House

Melts in your mouth

By Lisa S |

Believe it or not some hotels offer the worst breakfast ever... NOT Lockwood, calling their breakfast a buffet is an understatement. It's all beautifully done. They offer these melt in your mouth pancakes, special order omelettes, and freshly squeezed orange juice... "to die for". 2-thumbs up, 5-stars, and as I pound the table "more pancakes'.

pleasant lunch

Had lunch there before visiting this beautiful and historic hotel. We had a set menu and a glass of wine. I ate mushroom soup, salmon and the famous brownie. All very good. My friends liked the hamburger but were disappointed by the pasta dish. Excellent service.

Brownie Sundae

There are a few places you have to eat while in Chicago. Many people don’t realize the Palmer House is where the brownie came to life. We ordered two and a few after dinner cocktails and quickly realized we over ordered. We happened to be sitting in the bar area and chatting with a few ladies, who we gave one of our sundaes to. My husband and I are both big eaters, but it was just too rich and delicious to eat a whole one. The room/lobby area is just beautiful. Highly recommend.

Great dinner before seeing Hamilton

By Suzanne S |

We were staying at the Palmer House while in town to see Hamilton. It was convenient to eat there the day we arrived as we had tickets for St Patrick's Day show. We arrived when they opened at 5 pm, and I had made a reservation. My husband ordered one of the specialties for the day, Corned Beef and cabbage. He liked the corned beef a lot, and the soda bread served with it was divine. I had the lamb, which was superb. Cooked medium rare, very flavorful with a delicious sauce. I don't recall what it was served on, some type of grain, but it was really good. I had their Maple Manhattan (don't recall the exact name of the drink, but one of their specials) and it was really great. The bread served with the meal was also good. We did not order dessert. The service was prompt and professional, and we were in and out in about an hour.

Stunning setting for a drink

By Aaron G |

I went here for a pre-theater snack/drink. -they offer a coupon for a free appetizer with your "broadway in Chicago" ticket sleeve--which was very nice -main bar area is gorgeous with dramatic 30 foot ceilings and recently restored murals -very old school Chicago feel--very storied old hotel -service is a bit odd--they added an automatic caller button to summon your server which honestly felt awkward--especially in these fancy digs -prices high--charcuterie plate would've been $21--without coupon--wine glass was $12 -charcuterie plate was decent but not great--more quantity over quality--large portions but pretty much just prosciutto and salami Will come back for the view and atmosphere!

Great atmosphere for a drink or meal.

Our family had tickets for Hamilton which was right down the street with some time to kill we decided to check out the Palmer House. We were amazed at how luxurious and classy the interior was. I saw a sign describing the recent upgrade and the results are fabulous. We had a few drinks and deserts - amazing carrot cake! And thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. A few weddings were going on while we were there which added to the festive atmosphere. We did not stay at the hotel, but when I return to Chicago i'm going to try.

Breakfast Buffet

By Mary R |

We stayed at the Palmer House and our package included the Full Breakfast Buffet, and full buffet it was! We were seated immediately and brought coffee and juice and told to go enjoy the buffet, which was full of delicious choices from eggs to steel cut oatmeal. The muffin and breads bar with choices of toppings was wonderful too. Many of the food choices were labeled as locally sourced too and the presentation was beautiful. This was just what we needed to fuel us up for walking around the city. My only confusion was it sounded like the hostess said something about ordering pancakes, but she didn’t make it clear, not that I needed more food, but I like to understand things. Very worth adding this as part of your room package, I would not have paid the hefty price to just go in and buy this breakfast, but as part of my Room deal, it was beyond expectations.

Breakfast buffet is bigger than most

There are familiar choices in the breakfast buffet with a few extra additions. The service staff is quick and friendly.

Delicious food in a lovely setting

By bradshawgirl |

During our recent stay at the Palmer House, a friend and I had several meals in this on-site restaurant. I had a lovely lunch there one day (velvety mushroom pasta, with creme brûlée to finish). We also routinely ate breakfast at the Lockwood during our stay, as the weather was chilly and rainy. (Morning is a tender time. I'm not traditionally up for cold rain until I've got something delicious in my belly in the a.m.) They have two breakfast buffet options - hot and cold - and both offer a wide variety of delicious choices. Service could be a bit slow, but the food was yummy, and if you're staying at the Palmer, the convenience is hard to beat! Prices are a bit spendy for what you get.

Bar is a Hit or Miss

By Ann A |

We ate here twice with drink coupons offered by the hotel. The food and service were night and day between the experiences. There are two gluten free options and I felt safe with the staff's knowledge.

Average on all Accounts

By David F |

We recently had a business dinner in Chicago and our hosts took us to the Lockwood. The atmosphere walking in looked promising. When we got in, service was really slow, even on the drink orders. The steak selection was not that great and we were advised to only order the one steak item, or the scallops. The steak was fine, but the side orders were not too interesting. The appetizer listing was also a bit lacking. Overall the place was fine for a business dinner, but the menu was boring, the food was okay and even though I was not paying, I thought it very over-priced.

The Best

I've ate at a lot of restaurants all over the US and Australia but I've never had steak and potatoes of this caliber! I will be visiting again next week and will def eat here again! In fact I'm already dreaming about it!!!!

Location is it's best recommendation

By DMLehman6 |

I want to preface this review: this is not my first visit to Lockwood. I've stayed at the Palmer House Hilton a few times for business/work. And dined at Lockwood at least six times. My review reflects a pattern. On this occasion, we were a party of 7 (down 1 who was too tired to join), in town for a conference/expo, and had just traveled/worked all day. We chose this restaurant because we were all staying in the hotel and it was convenient. The bar area in the lobby is quite crowded and noisy. Drinks are expensive. Service is spotty. Inside the restaurant area it's quieter, but service is still spotty. Our server was friendly, but did not pay attention to details. He got more than more order wrong (meat temperatures) and one dish had to be sent back for additional cooking. Time between ordering drinks and meal - long. Time between salad and main - long. Since we were also planning and working, it didn't matter too much, but it would have been really irritating otherwise. Food: Average, good. We shared a couple of starters - not memorable. The meat portions, even the 'small' size, are too large. Like many Chicago steak houses, if you want vegetables, order a side. Mine came with 'broccoli', but it was so tough it could not be cut with a fork and knife. More of a garnish. Wine selection: OK. Again - high prices, even for city/hotel. Lockwood wants to be a fine dining spot. Menu items sound intriguing, they just don't deliver. If you are at the hotel, I recommend it as a convenient option. I do not recommend it as a destination. There are so many other excellent choices in Chicago.

Pre-ballet dinner with friends.

Excellent meal for pre-theater or ballet. The bar area was packed. It's at the Palmer House Hotel, beautiful place.

Great place to eat and meet

By rallensr |

I had lunch at the Lockwood Restaurant and the food was very good and the staff was very attentive to the table. They gave a good amount of food for the value. The restaurant is off of the main lobby area and they have a social area where you can get drinks right outside of the restaurant. I did see a number of people meeting for lunch and discussing business.

Great food, poor service

By Bucky6478 |

Recently had dinner at Lockwood - overall, was happy with the experience other than the lackadaisical and frustrating service. The restaurant is located off the lobby at the Palmer House and has a slightly more modern feel than the hotel. It can be a bit on loud side depending on where you sit given proximity to bar. The booths in the back are quite nice and comfortable. The menu is varied and has lot of local inspired dishes including seafood and veggie options. We tried several appetizers (smoked fish spread, buratta with vegtables and tuna poke) - all were delicious. Had roast Trout main course, which was well seasoned. As noted, only issue was the terrible service. The server was not friendly or helpful, served our main course 10 minutes after dropping off appetizers and would then ignore requests (we had to flag down another waiter for coffee service). With a different server, may have rated 5 star.

Good, pricey, convenient

By TexasGLS |

We are here before seeing Hamilton, the food was good but nothing memorable. I believe they do the sous vide method of cooking their steaks. It was very tender but I prefer grilled, not saying it was bad, just nothing I would go back for. The service was fine, our waiter was a little awkward at times. Dessert was good. The place was not crowded before the show. If you are looking for an easy meal while staying at the Palmer it isn't a bad choice especially if you are not on a budget.

Great breakfast

By MillsMama |

Our server Jennifer was so nice and filled us in on several stories about the hotel! The breakfast selection should satisfy everyone, and we especially liked the breakfast potatoes.

Would not recommend

By Nora B |

We went here and were disappointed when we were not served.we watched as people around us showed up and immediately had waiters getting their orders. We eventually just left and went to a different restaurant. If I’m going to pay that much for a meal I deserve wayyy better quality service

Great appetizers

By zhivago |

Cheese board and wine very nice before going out for dinner on the town. Great views of the iconic deco lobby

Tranquility

By Cattleman007 |

After a busy day of sightseeing, buses and trains we needed a break. We chose the Lockwood Bar in the Palmer House without knowing just what to expect, and found a gem. Marty the bartender was patient and friendly. There is a nice selection of single malts and bourbons. I even got a wee taste before my final selection. My wife enjoyed what she thought was the obsolete best cup of coffee she had ever tasted. The room is amazing, quiet, and tasteful. Heck, visit just to see the ceiling. We will definitely be back.

A good courtyard bar

By JLM3080 |

This is the lobby bar of the Palmer house, and it has the same character, and is in a great location under a magnificent ceiling. Service is fine, and drink selection food, ideal for an early or late evening drink, the bar food menu is a bit it and miss

Poor quality food, presentation lacking.

By 823stango |

Very disappointed with the quality of this meal so much so that we took a photo of it so friends would know we hadn't exaggerated. Waiters were fantastic, very efficient and pleasant, they rated 5 stars but the food, certainly not.

Best Pancakes I Ever Had

By Melissa F |

I was lucky enough to score a deal with my hotel that included a free daily breakfast buffet at the Lockwood, and it was amazing. The pancakes are the best I ever had - slightly crispy on the edges, fluffy inside, delicous and you get 3 of them, each the size of a dinner plate! The rest was standard, good quality breakfast fare, but those pancakes were something special.

Excellent service, wonderful omlettes!

By Joel B |

Excellent service, wonderful omelets and coffee- . Dinner here was also excellent before seeing the wonderful” Hamilton” just down the street!

Fantastic bar, so so food

By Mariongal |

You can't go wrong with the Lockwood Lobby bar at the Palmer House. Gorgeous setting, high ceiling, art deco. Terrific selection of wines and mixed drinks. Great service. The good is just fair. My chicken Caesar salad had barely 1/4 cup of diced chicken on top! Go for drinks and choose another restaurant for dinner.

Absolutely delicious! Food and setting were fantastic!

By FOTMM |

Enjoyed a business dinner here. The service was top notch. With some food allergies in the group, the server was meticulous in documenting issues and double-checking everything with the kitchen. The petite fillet was perfectly cooked and the sides were all delicious. Steakhouses are not inexpensive in Chicago, but Lockwood was fairly priced and convenient given the location within the Palmer House Hotel.

too good, order your own

By bourbonandcigars |

On a recent visit, the hour was closer to brunch than breakfast, wanted something other than offerings on the breakfast buffet. Was given the new menu...saw Mushroom Bolognese ( mushrooms with pasta). Man-o-man! Something so simple, so good, w/out being overly filling. A pasta linguine? with a light, savory sauce filled with 2 or 3 different kinds of mushrooms, mmm, mmm good. Only let my daughter have a little taste, told her to order her own, 2 good 2 share! Compliments to the chef. Service was attentive without feeling stalked. Beveraages attended to without having to ask for reheats or top-offs. Very pleasant experience, we will return.

Strange concoction

By Amy A |

Stopped for a post theater cocktail. Ordered a vodka/cranberry and it just tasted strange. I figured out that they must have used absolut vanilla instead of plain vodka. Didn’t send back because there were few servers and the bar was busy, but definitely didn’t order a second one!

Breakfast buffet

By John P |

We ate at the daily breakfast buffet. Fresh food, well executed...but I was surprised to see Eggo toaster waffles instead of fresh batter and a wafflemaker.

BEST PART OF THE HOTEL

By RickMarshall |

We only went for breakfast, but as noted in my review of the Palmer House, this was the only place where the staff seemed happy and engaged. Food was okay, nothing special.

Great breakfast!

By moksha51 |

Breakfast buffet is excellent. Service is very good. Attached to the hotel, it is very convenient. Decor and atmosphere is very good for private conversations. Cannot go wrong with this restaurant.

Breakfast Buffet - Delicious & made to order omelettes from your server

By 362princess29 |

This breakfast buffet is like no other, their is a parfait bar where you can make your own additions to your yogurt, yummy. You can order an omelet made the way you want from your server - delicious. This is not your ordinary buffet line the potatoes are delicious also.

Lovely Service, Small Menu

By SouthernJewelryGirl |

We love to eat here because we get the Salmon and Filet. Itis not an expansive selection, but we always leave happy and the servers are so wonderful! Pricey, but we eat here when treating ourselves!

Wonderful meal in a beautiful old hotel

By tarajd |

The hotel is stunning and to eat great food in the setting makes it even more special. The Charcuterie starter was enough for 4 to share with delicious meat and cheese choices. They served with grilled bread which was a nice change from crackers. My husband, who is a Brit, had the Fish and Chips and said they were some of the best he has had in America.

Try the world famous Brownie

By TJFLG42 |

The Lockwood Restaurant and Bar located in the Palmer House Hilton hotel is famous for its Brownie. Enjoy one while admiring the old world beauty of the grand lobby. I cannot speak to the rest of the menu as we were there during the afternoon.

Delightful Dinner

By C-02 |

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We chose it because it was at the Palmer House Hotel and it was only a few steps away from the CIBC Theatre. It provides a quiet and romantic setting and tasty menu offerings. Our server, OJ, was helpful, timely, and pleasant. Our food was delicious - I had chicken thighs (which had more meat than I expected) with potatoes and Brussel sprouts. My husband tried the fish and chips; though he prefers battered over breaded, he enjoyed his choice. We absolutely wanted to order the brownie for dessert since it was originally created in Chicago. It did not disappoint! Do yourself a favor and taste Mrs. Palmer's Brownie!

Highly Dubious Management Forethought

By The Happy-Go-Lucky Traveler |

In October I had called Lockwood Restaurant and explained that I would like to make a family reservation for Christmas Eve dinner. I was being proactive and thought it best to start early with reservations. My extended family and I have stayed over the past years at The Palmer House over Christmas Eve holiday. I was told that the restaurant doesn't take reservations, but there wouldn't be an issue getting a reservation for Christmas Eve at 6:00pm. because it isn't busy. When I checked into the hotel on December 24 I was again assured that reservations are not accepted, but I wouldn't have any trouble getting an early evening family reservation for Christmas Eve dinner. "Trust me," I was told. I had lunch at the restaurant on December 24 and noticed that there was a Christmas Eve dinner and that reservations were encouraged. I spoke with a manager and I wondered why I was first told that reservations weren't accepted only to find that is not accurate. The manager offered plenty of excuses and blamed it on other managers' decision, but did not either offer a logical explanation. I asked for a 6:00 family reservation for 8 people, like I had attempted to do in October and the manager was sorry to tell me that the earliest she could get me was at 9:00pm. This put a major damper on our family dinner since we were hoping to eat in the early evening. More excuses, rambling, and "manager double-talk" ensued so I made reservations for my family elsewhere and the other restaurant received my dinner bill of several hundreds of dollars instead of Lockwood. I love the Palmer House, but my esteem for Lockwood has decreased considerably, especially for their decision making and problem resolution/customer relations skills.

Nutcracker Tea nice but atmosphere could be better

By morgainegeiser |

We really enjoyed the tea and the little sandwiches, scones and sweets. The harpist was nice. Our waiter had no clue what any of the food was, but the hostess was able to explain each item. This is not cheap but it was something we wanted to give a try and glad we did so. My only real complaint was the number of people that just wandered right by where you were trying to enjoy the music and tea, talking on their cell phones loudly, having personal conversations and then sitting in an area clearly marked reserved. Also, people for the tea were seated at the lower tables and then people not at the tea piled in at the high top tables talking loudly and blocking the view of the harpist. The atmosphere could have been wonderful, just by limiting the number of people in the area where the tea took place instead of allowing large numbers of people to sit at the high top tables.

OK food, but smwhat limited selection on the menu

By Peter L |

Ate here twice (a lunch and dinner) here during our 2-day stay at the Palmer House. Located just off the lobby it's a convient place tograb a bite to eat. Wouldn't recommend it, but the Palmer House doesn't have much to offer in the area restaurants.

Good from far, far from good....

By Carter L |

Conveniently located in the Palmer House Hotel, the service and food are both just ok. I think they are doing a reset so I will revisit. I ordered the trout and it was pretty good. My associate ordered the seafood pasta and hasn't felt the same since.

Expensive, limited menu, nothing special

By MitchMeg |

Considering this was the expensive place to have dinner at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, I expected a decent menu, but in reality, there was a very limited menu. I ordered a hamburger (the only gluten-free option), which came without any accompanying salad or fries or any other side dish. Though the hamburger was good, it is hard to make it very special. That hamburger and a glass of one of the house wines and a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert set me back $55, and left me very disappointed in my evening meal. Service was also very slow, especially considering there were only a handful of people in the restaurant when I ate there.
