I grew up in San Antonio and have traveled to 48 states and 23 countries and it is definitely a San Antonio thing to use Red tortillas for cheese enchiladas and chips. Famous puffy taco was good ("See Bobby Flay Thrown Down) but rest was ordinary.

Being in San Antonio again for a different occasion, I had to make sure we ate here again. No waiting for a table and our waitress was very nice. The fajitas were excellent with well seasoned meat and the always good homemade tortillas. The sopapillas are very good here. Being from SC, we don't have authentic Tex-Mex so this was a treat. Highly recommended.

My wife had watched the "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" episode about puffy tacos, and insisted we stop at Los Barrios. We were anticipating a great meal, but were both underwhelmed. The food was adequate, but uninteresting and did not stand out in any way from any of a thousand other Mexican restaurants. Both the beef and chicken tacos needed salt. I also ordered a Chapula which turned out to be tortilla chips topped with the same bland chicken as in the tacos and rather tasteless guacamole. The service was fine and the drinks were ok, but overall there was nothing noteworthy about the entire experience.

I was introduced to Los Barrios in 1999, since then, I make it a point to make sure I eat there before I go back home, I have taken several friends and family there and they too enjoyed it. You need to check out their menu online, you can find quail, cabrito, and other authentic plates. If you're not sure what to order, they will bring you a sample of 2 or 3 things that you would like to eat but cannot make up your mind, and then you can decide. They serve fresh chimichuri with chips, besides the salsa, I cannot stop eating the chimichuri. I've had several of their plates but my 2 favorite is the chicken mole, and beef chili rellenos. You could share a plate if you're a light eater, they give you good portions. They are close to the Drury Inn by the airport on 410 and Blanco. Lot's of space to celebrate birthdays, graduations, etc., very clean and the atmosphere is awesome, and the owner's come around to the tables to make sure you're satisfied with the service.

Very good place to eat with the atmosphere to the workers to the food was all above average . The nachos and different types ofdips were great

I started eating here in the early 70's when this restaurant had 15 tables at most. No advertising, no marketing, no big reputation on the internet, but it had arguably the best Cheese enchiladas in town. The chimichurri sauce on the table was unique and the regular salsa was delicious with the chips. Plus Viola, the owner was a wonderful manager/chef/waitress. She did it all when it stared just like millions of other restaurant owners but unlike millions of others she made it to the finish line of success. Sitting in there when there were only one or two tables with customers made me worry because I wanted that food to last forever. Thank heavens it has! While I loathe the fact Viola is gone, her children have kept the salsa flowing and cheese bubbling with her spirit feeding the flames. The consistency of their food is amazing. After 40 plus years, this is truly a gift from the food "gods". Living in Denver for the past 19 years, there is one restaurant my family always gets to when we are home. That will not change till they start shoveling dirt on me or Los Barrios and I hope I go first!

Exelent food! Exelent service! And the way they take care of you until you get a table it’s really impressive!

I found this place because Cook's Country magazine talked about it in relation to a feature they did on puffy tacos a few years ago. I had to try it, and I was not disappointed! I liked that they have an a la carte menu with published prices so that you can get what you want without all the extras like rice, beans, etc. All I wanted was puffy tacos at a sit down restaurant, and they had them. Possibly there are fast food places where you can get them for cheaper, but this place has a nice atmosphere and was not too noisy. The service was good too, and our kids liked their tacos. My only complaint was that the bowl of chips was very small. This seems to be a San Antonio thing because the other place we had eaten Mexican food also gave us a very small bowl of chips. However, our waitress quickly filled them up again when we ate up all the chips. Their flour tortillas are also very good. The food was all piping hot and the puffy tacos were DELICIOUS!!! The place is clean and easy to find. It felt like a very local type of place and not touristy.

Came here for a quite bite after the work day. I know the chips are filler food but I couldn't help but plow through 2 baskets of them due to the salsa. The salsa had a very nice kick to it (didnt make me cry but didn't leave me feeling that I was dunking my chips into a tomato bath). I wasn't surprised when the waitress recommended the top shelf margarita along with the puffy tacos. However, I was really surprised with how good they both were! The margarita wasn't too sweet and one was definitely enough considering I had to drive home. I got one puffy taco with chicken and one with beef. To my surprise I liked the beef one more than the chicken. The beef had a great tasting seasoning and just completed the taco. The waitress I had was excellent. She was constantly coming by and asking me how things were and always seemed to have a water waiting for me.

We'd been to this place for dinner after seeing positive reviews but goodness the food was subpar and very oily. I ordered Quesadillas de Verduras Frescas and I got rice without any beans to go with and to top that the service was terrible.

My family wrapped-up their visit to San Antonio by going to Los Barrios (upon the recommendation from the valet, Colin, at Eilan Spa & Hotel.) We all had phenomenal meals! Colin recommended a variety of meals, including the Cabrito En Salsa...it was delicious! The meat was tender and fell off the bone. One meal was more than enough for my mom and I. Other great items that we ordered was the Snacking Plate #1 & the Churrasco Steak -- the chimichurri dressing was so good! The restaurant is loud when crowded. Great food, great service.

We visit San Antnoni four to five times a year and have never missed a visit to Los Barrios. They have the best puffy tacos and enchilidas in South Texas. The Margaritas are really good too. Service is great and the wait staff is very friendly. My family is from Houston and we usually order Enchilidas to take home and freeze. They taste almost as wonderful from the freezer as they do fresh. I highly recommend that you try Los Barrios.

The food and the service were very good. My combination plate with puffy taco, cheese enchilada and tamale were great. Decent bloody mary's. My father ordered the Cabrito (goat) and he really enjoyed it. If you are a tourist, don't let the area the restaurant it located in fool you. Parking is decent behind the building and across the street. I would definitely go again if I ever came through San Antonio.

Had seen the Bobby Flay Throw-down episode with the owner of Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant Featuring Puffy Tacos, which she won. Decided to order the Chicken Enchilada and Puffy Taco combo. Unfortunately the Puffy Taco was soggy and was lack luster, but the Enchilada was good. Should have gone to Henry’s Puffy Taco which was recommended by the hotel. Shame on me!

This was my first time visiting Los Barrios. I will tell you, it was the beat Mexican food experience I have had!! The beans were the best I have eaten. The chimichurri and homemade corn tortillas were perfect! Keep up the great work!

This is probably one of the best Mexican restaurants around! Really the best food we have had in a long time. From the chips and salsa to the beans and rice everything was very tasty. I had on each puffy taco chick and beef. My personal fav was chicken but they were both good. The enchiladas were good and the shrimp fajitas yummy. The staff was very friendly and the owner came by and checked on us. He was so nice. I recommend this place over all on the riverwalk and around the area. You will not be disappointed. You will leave full and happy!

I was taken to this Tex Mex restaurant by my brother-in-law who said it was his favorite restaurant in San Antonio. It is not near the Riverwalk so is frequented by the locals. The taste of the food was average to above average, no complaints, but the service is what is great with quickly served drinks, chips and salsa and large portions of the entrees. In most Mexican restaurants I leave the rice and beans on the plates due to the usual bland taste but at Los Barrios those sides were so good, I finished the whole enchilada plate. My sister always orders their specialty, the Puffy Tacos. Since we were celebrating, we had the talented mariachi band play Feliz Navidad which instantly raised the positive energy of the restaurant. People began to clap and dance at their tables. More tables added their song requests such that later the band returned to our table to sing La Bamba to thank us for 'getting the party going'. If you go, request a song.

Visited tonight with 13 in our party, including two children with food allergies (all nuts and eggs). We had a great table to the back so we didn't feel like our large party was bothering anyone. The service was prompt and attentive. The owner visited the table and was exceptionally helpful especially with the food allergies. He brought out the chef and she got the children what they wanted to eat with some changes necessary to make the plate safe. I will note for those with nut allergies that this restaurant doesn't use a lot of nuts so this makes things simpler. Our margaritas were good. The food came out quickly and was hot. Everything was tasty. We learned during the meal that the puffy taco is a big deal here (served at the White House, won against Bobby Flay, etc...see news articles displayed in restaurant). One of the kids ordered it and they did love it, more of us would have got it if we had known before we ordered. We also learned from some of the locals (we are not) that this family owned restaurant was quite a personal story. The way we heard it...basically the Mom started the restaurant when her husband died, to support her family. The mom was thereafter helping a neighbor who had a drug problem, and was murdered by the person she was trying to help. Her son and daughter took over the business and have done well, expanding to 3 locations. Moms photo is in the entryway. How can you not want to support this family? I always prefer to eat at local family restaurants, but this tragic story just begs for community support. The mariachi band was there and was great. I know we tipped them but I have no idea how much, tipping is certainly appropriate especially if you make a song request. So while the Mexican food was not the absolute best I've ever had, it was the best we've had in Texas - very tasty and that combined with the nice people, the ambiance, the help with the food allergy meals, and history EASILY gets it to a 5. We recommend. Like this review? Please let us know by liking it! Cheers! :-D

Originally from San Antonio and visiting friends. When we asked for Tex-Mex they took us here. Yum. It was great. I would go back if ever in San Antonio again.

On April 21, 2023, a large group of friends gathered at Los Barrios to celebrate a couple of birthdays. This restaurant has been operating for 50 years and it's time to close its doors. The service was terrible. The food was tasteless and expensive considering the quality and the portions. I ordered a mixed fajita plate and got two tortillas wrapped in foil - one with tough tasteless meat and the other with dry overcooked chicken. Fajitas are to be served on sizzling platters with sides of guacamole, pico de gallo, sauteed onions and peppers, sour cream, along with sides of rice and beans plus the tortillas. My beans were lacking flavor - the rice dry. There may have been a tablespoon of pico and maybe an equal amount of mashed avocado. This was the lunch special for $13.99!!! My husband ordered chalupas. Disgusting. Two small corn tortillas with a smattering of beans and a little lettuce - the other with a spoonful of hamburger. No sides at all. All for the amazing price of $9.00. Oh yes...Mexican restaurants in San Antonio always serve a basket of chips with salsa complimentary. If you want more - of course you can pay for more. So IF you plan to visit San Antonio and want to try Texas Mexican Cuisine AVOID this place. Locals know the little places where the food is amazing and the prices don't offend the pocketbook. R. Hernandez

The puffy tacos were excellent. The beef were better than the chicken, but still very good. The tacos de pueblo were very good also along with the charro beans. The chicken tortilla soup was superior and the salsa and chips were the best. Excellent service as well.

Fun ambiance and decor. Packed parking lot on a Friday night but we were seated immediately. El Jefe margarita was strong and tasty! Really delicious. Beef fajitas were ok. The beef was not in our Top 5 though. Chicken enchiladas rancheras were good but needed more sauce. Shredded chicken can be dry without enough sauce on top. Tex Mex Enchiladas were the highlight of the table. 1 beef, 1 chicken, 1 cheese and the sauce was AMAZING. Perfect in every way! Everyone at the table stole bites! Chips were thick and oily but tasted great! The salsa was spicy and delicious as well. Overall, the best things about our visit were the margaritas cooks and salsa, and the Tex Mex enchiladas. Oh, and the live Mariachi band was a great extra touch!!

Tuesday is fajita special. $16.99 for a huge amount of great food. Chicken fajitas very tender, great beans. Homemade tortillas, plenty of leftovers to take home. Friendly service, never ran out of water. A wonderful place to eat. Never ending chips free.

This restaurant has unique and delicious entrees for reasonable prices. The story behind the restaurant is heartwarming as it was started by Viola, when she was new to the US and suddenly became a widow. She built her business cooking delicious food and successfully raised her 3 children. The business is carried on by 2 of her children and it remains a successful family business that gives back to the community through the Viola Foundation.

Not far from the airport and about twenty minutes from downtown this is a great place to enjoy good Mexican food.

San Antonio is one of the birthplaces of the entire state of Texas. At San Antonio de Béxar, the Texians and Tejanos mixed cultures and swapped recipes and created the unique tapestry that is Tex-Mex food. That long history is why San Antonio is the world capital of great Tex-Mex food. On a recent weekend trip, the wife and I decided to try something off the beaten path and I found Los Barrios. Far from the long lines and craziness of my Riverwalk favorites and away from the parking challenges of Market Square, lies Los Barrios. The area of town lives up to the restaurant's namesake, but don't let that stop you. The enchilladas, signature mole, and Tex-Mex favorites are all here and better than any other I've tasted in San Antonio. They also have a wide selection of soups, steaks, Mexican seafood platters, and vegetarian options. Partnered with a very reasonably priced menu and the best Mexican trio band I've ever heard live really seals the deal on the atmosphere at Los Barrios. A++

Excellent menu and the food is very tasty. Didnt want to go to the Riverwalk so sought out a good restaurant with good food.

Excellent location friendly staff superb food and home produced beer. The fillet steak cooked to perfection and plenty of It! Likewise the lamb chops. House wine (sauvignon blanc) very easy to drink. They even brought us a brownie with candles for our anniversary. All that and reasonably priced. Looking forward to our next visit.

It has been many years since I've been to Los Barrios, and it does not disappoint! Started with a frozen Sangria Swirl Margarita. Excellent! Wanted another, but refrained since I was driving. I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes and oh my, I love their tomatillo sauce! Perfect. My dining partners all enjoyed their meals and margaritas. The atmosphere is casual with families and couples enjoying their evening out. We will be back!

Let me start by saying, it was my first time visiting and definitely will not he my last. Upon arrival there was a bit of a wait. I was almost immediately offered a margarita. I kindly accepted. My margarita was back in a flash made to perfection. Almost immediately after being seated, I was waited on. My meal of choice, beef fajitas!!!! Oh my word, they were delicious. I ate till I couldn't eat anymore and still had to carry some home. It was delicious. I'm not from San Antonio however, I am here quite often. When I am here and need myMexican food fix, this hands down will be my spot. The food was great, the staff was superb, and the building was clean. Management here has a lot to be proud of. Thank you!!!!

The food it self no taste and dirty plate and cold to top it off Service was ok too pricey it would have been ok if the food was good

Great selection of home-style Mexican and tex-mex food. Enchiladas poblanas - chicken enchiladas topped with a delicious spicy mole sauce is one of my favorite dishes. Great milanesa. Margaritas on the rocks rock!

It started with the margaritas, continued with the salsa, then the main courses. Consensus, best Mexican we have ever eaten. 5 stars!

We have been coming to this place whenever we make it to San Antonio since 1997. Have tried most things on the menu and none of us were ever disappointed. I usually steer towards the puffy tacos only because they are nearly impossible to find in our neck of the woods or some of the best fajitas in town. The cheese enchiladas are some of the best ever. Great seasonings and flavorings. They take pride in their cooking and it shows when you can put out that level of consistency for the 19 years that we have been when we are in town. If you have like 10 people at the table get the El Mofofo Grill. Fantastic dish. Had it once but you really need a lot of people to share. I personally like the chimichurri that is presented which I think with the right combination of meats, cheeses and bread could be made into a "Mexican Muffalatta". A San Antonio MUST DO! As a side note: Get the cookbook. It's well worth it.

It doesn't get any better in San Antonio! We have been eating here since they opened in 1979. The food is consistently excellent, the atmosphere is family oriented and you never feel rushed! Excellent wait staff and excellent margaritas!

This is a MUST GO TO dining experience. Excellent salsa and mango picco. The shrimp enchiladas are excellent. Street tacos and puff tacos were a family hit. The staff were helpful and attentive. As this was our first time the owner took time out of her schedule to explain the menu and help us with selections. She also took time to talk to all the diners and thank them. Great family owned restaurant, excellent food, a fun place to dine and UIW Graduates. Hope to see you there, soon.

Chips and salsa is my all time favorite food so i can always judge how the rest of my dinner is going to be based on that! Must say they have an excellent chips and salsa! It has a little kick to it but just the right amount of kick! I ordered a strawberry margarita and it was excellently mixed! Not too strong but not too sweet! For dinner i had the Texas enchilidas one beef one cheese and one chicken! It was great! The Chile con carne was not too smoky but flavorful.. must say out of the 3 i wish i would have got all chicken because it was GREAT! Definitely recommend going here vs all of the touristy places on the river walk! We waited about 30 minutes to be seated but there was plenty of things to read in the lobby and they have their own lobby bar! Major plus!

Been eating here since I was at TMI in 1986. Chicken Fajitas are the best in town. Henry is still there all these years later and as friendly as ever.

Use to go to Los Barrios all the time when I lived in San Antonio. It is good to see as the restaurant has gotten bigger the food has stayed the same. or better.

Other than across the border... This dish is easily a 9 on a scale of 10. The portion served is enough for two. Good service and homemade tortillas.

We love Los Barrios! We’ve been going there since my husband was based at Randolph AFB in the 90’s. Over the years we’ve visited SA at least once a year and love the consistently delicious food at this family-owned restaurant on south Blanco. The chips are the perfect thickness , the red salsa just the right spiciness, and then the chimichuri sauce is to die for. Then the enchiladas and puffy tacos are exactly what the doctor ordered, time and again. The staff is always welcoming, kind and efficient.

We started coming here about two years ago when the road construction prompted Los Barrios to send out BOGO coupons to people in neighborhoods around Los Barrios. We are not THAT close, but were glad to get a coupon to try a new place. We always like to sit in a booth, so we were led to one near the entrance. The waitress gave us our menus and then seemed to forget about us until I went to a waiter near the kitchen and asked for someone to take our order. We were not really impressed with that, but since we kept getting BOGO coupons, we decided to give the place another chance. The next time we went, we got seated at a booth in the middle of the restaurant and met Henry, our waiter. He is truly excellent and has worked there a long time. I ordered soft rolled chicken tacos with the sauce on the side, since most of the time the sauce is an orange-yellow color and I don't care for it. Come to find out the sauce is the mild red sauce that I have loved for years, and can't be found at very many places. From then on, we were sold on the place, and even after the BOGO coupons ceased (the construction FINALLY got finished) we have continued to go there and get the wonderful food and our favorite waiter. If you go during the week, there are mix and match lunch specials that are much cheaper than regular meals. Truly excellent.

We drove thirty-five miles in a rain just to eat at Los Barrios. Always good, fresh Mexican food! Ready to return!

Such a cute place. Nicely decorated, large and open with a lovely big patio for outdoor dining. The food is excellent and the portions are generous. If you like chips and salsa, you’ll be in heaven. So warm and delicious and of course unlimited. Our server, Erica was so sweet and patient and kept checking on us. She gave us great advice regarding our order and kept up with our chips and salsa intake lol. Great value for money. Best Mexican restaurant in SA area. No more eating on the Riverwalk for us!

We usually try to meet friend here every time we are in San Antonio and love the quality of food we receive here. Definitely worth the drive away from downtown for dinner!

Some of the BEST Mexican Food around! We always try to make a visit during any trip to San Antonio! If you want a great place to have a quality Mexican Food dinner then this is worth a shot!

If you want REAL Mexican food, this is it. Located in the middle of an older San Antonio neighborhood, Los Barrios carries traditional Tex-Mex, traditional Mexican dishes, and new tastes. Two can split the chicken or beef fajitas washed down with local or Mexican beer and have a great time. Or try the enchiladas, beef or chicken, you won't be disappointed. I guarantee it ! 😎

We had a family group of seven people. All of the food was great. Service was impeccable, the fajitas are to die for.

I’ve been Coming here for about 20 years. I think it’s been open for 40. This is a total dive great food friendly great service place that I keep coming to year after year. The only thing they could improve a bit on is the salsa. It seems it’s from a jar and no cilantro in it . Every dish I’ve had here is good. I just keep coming back for more. I’m San Antonio it says a lot , because there are Mexican food places everywhere! Love this place . Fresh hand made food .

Loved the family atmosphere and personal attention. Of course the food is amazing. Especially loved a green hot sauce (salsa like only with peppers and cilantro) they serve with chips and anything else you desire. It's hot, but have never had this and have been searching for it ever since. Hope someday to return. Diana Barrios Trevino visited our table and gladly signed her cookbook for me. She is the best.

A pre-wedding dinner to meet new family, and it could not have been more comfortable. Very nice decor, excellent service, fun beverages and really great food. A quality restaurant that has been a local staple. From start to finish our dinning was at ease. The servers were very attentive and yet left us to our privacy to meet and get to know one another. A very, very pleasant experience. I might add that we were the visitors but the bride's Mother has been coming since they opened and we all felt at home.

I was very disappointed with the service that we received during my friends farewell gathering. Management did a bad job not having enough servers. Drinks and food came sporatically during the evening..people were eating at random times and I for one ever got my food so I cancelled my order. VIOLA must be rolling in her grave with the bad servuce that we received. I will not return.

Los Barios is my go-to when in San Antonio. The chicken mole enchiladas (#9) and the chicken puffed tacos (see photos) simply cannot be beat. I've never tried the "new" upscale location on the northside. When a location has worked for decades, why risk something new. Highly Recommended

I went to this place for a graduation party. I was not even remotely impressed. My meal was just fair, I had to ask for silverware even. I had simmered beef in a sauce with beans and rice and guoc. I could barely eat the beef at all, which says alot, because I mostly eat anything always. The only redeeming item was the guoc. Service was slow, the place was busy but not staffed right. There are many other better alternatives all over SA.

Los Barrios has been one of our favorite hangouts for decades. I can honestly say we've never had a bad meal at this location. The food is classic TexMex. The Mole Enchaladsas is my favorite and is one of the best moles in town. But nothing on the menu disappoints. Chips and salsa are delicious, and the margaritas are spot on. The only downsides to this fine restaurant are that it will probably be very crowded, especially on weekends, and very loud. If weather permits ask to sit on the patio.

We were in town for a military graduation. We love San Antonio and the chance to see family and eat good Mexican food. Saw the reviews and thought we would give this place a try. Over all everything was just average. Cheese enchiladas needed more cheese and rice and beans were bland. Guacamole was flavorless. Chips could have been warmer. The beef tacos were the highlight of the night. Waitress was adequate.

Los Barrios is in an authentic neighborhood. I had corn quesadillas, and they were different but great! The man who served me was extremely nice and realized I was not from this area. The queso was queso, and the frozen margareta was a margareta but the food was super.

Seating was open. There was a band playing Wednesday when we got in, so that was nice. The tacos were amazing and so was their chips and different salsas. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

We found this well reviewed restaurant on TA and had to give it a try. As the name implies it is located in a residential area in an old Dairy Queen. I’m no expert on Mexican food but I know what I like and I liked the food here. The chips are fresh fried and delicious. Reasonably priced house drinks with great margaritas which were not artificially green. I had the Chili Relleno and my wife had the flautas. Both excellent. If you like Mexican food you should try this one.

We decided to come to this restaurant after hearing how great it was. We arrived around 5:30 in the evening and were told that we would be seated in 10-15 minutes. Well after almost 45 minutes we were finally seated. Salsa was great, chips were a bit stale. We ordered the puffy tacos and enchiladas which were very good, I would recommend. Our server was very unfriendly and inattentive. Loved everything but the service and the noise level as it was very loud.

There are a lot of new restaurants here and they have more atmosphere maybe but for food this is the best in San Antonio

This restaurant is not close to downtown But worth the drive. They have great food and atmosphere. There Rice is pretty amazing too!

It was our annual get together with our American friends at the conference we always attend. Reservations were made and we went slightly late but we're well received. Service was good and the drinks came fast although the Sangria we had seem a tad too sweet. The portions were large for the enchiladas but I guess this is Texas. We were entertained by a birthday party at the next table but overall I guess the food was average.

Living in the greater Houston area, we have no shortage of Mexican restaurants and when I travel, I often look for something other than Mexican food for this reason. However, when the mood for Mexican cuisine strikes, there truly is no substitute and that is what led us to visit Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant on a recent San Antonio excursion. Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant has a large interior that can hold probably 200 or so guests. It is divided into a couple of sections, but the openness of the design makes you feel like you’re dining together, in a single space. The décor, with its plants, pictures, and shapely architecture speaks Mexican and it adds to the restaurant’s authentic appeal. With food, Los Barrios starts you off with the customary chips and salsa, but what they serve here is a notch better than other restaurants. My family and I went through two or three containers of chips before the night was through, so you know they had to be good. With beverages, my wife ordered a margarita and loved it. I would have ordered beer, but all they serve is the usual Mexican brands, most of which are mediocre at best. We went with an assortment of meals when we dined here, ranging from appetizers to enchiladas to chalupas and more. We all agreed that the food was well- prepared and I liked how the waiter went the extra mile by bringing me some chips and hot sauce after I placed my order, to make sure it wasn’t too hot for my tastes. The entrée I selected had hot sauce and he wanted to be sure that it was palatable before I made this entrée my final selection. I appreciated this extra care, as this is something you don’t get with most restaurants. If I had to single out one issue I had with Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant it would be the slow service. There were many tables open, but they didn’t seem to have quite enough staff and it took close to half an hour to get our food. We were able to forgive, since the enchiladas, empanadas, and other items were so tasty. But I know some people who would have been quite unhappy having to wait for such an extended period of time. Mexican and Tex Mex food are abundant in southern Texas. We have hundreds of Mexican restaurants within thirty minutes of my home, but even when I travel, I still have Mexican cravings. Los Barrios Mexican Restaurant satisfied my Mexican food needs and while the service could be faster, this restaurant easily delivers on most counts and makes a good choice for an authentic Mexican lunch or dinner.

First time my husband, My two kids and I went to have lunch here. The food was generic nothing to brag about, I’ve ate at way better places. The service was absolutely HORRIBLE!! We waited to be seated for about 10 minutes and there was no hostess, the sign clearly says “wait to be seated” and many employees walked by and saw us standing there and ALL IGNORED US! to include the MANAGER! Who made direct eye contact with us!! All were just standing around talking! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. HORRIBLE UNACCEPTABLE SERVICE!! Also DIRTY! DO NOT GO HERE!!

The waiter was responsive, and he gave us suggestions, as this was our first time eating here. I had a delicious steak that was SO good! I think it was the steak tampiquena. Oh, yeah, my wife loved her margarita...and she is picky about her drinks! Nice atmosphere, great food. I left feeling very satisfied and happy.

We had lunch with our tour group and had the owner and TV celebrity (Diana Barrios Travino) cook our lunch. So all of us had margaritas, some bought the cook book, some bought the Tortillas Warmer. I got both and she signed the book.

This place truly is the Best Authentic Tex-Mex in the United States! Family owned and run, Los Barrios is a MUST visit for all who visit our enchanted city. Outstanding food, and better service, it is one of the GO to places for us since 1987...we love EVERYTHING about the restaurant, and love to visit whenever we have the Tex-Mex urge...it is authentic with dishes with a true Mexican flair. True family recipes that are the essence of the San Antonio dining experience. Always worth it for us!

We've been here a few times during our visits to San Antonio. The food is consistently good. It's got a good family friendly atmosphere.

I know they are known for all of the high quality menu items but my favorite are the shrimp enchiladas. This place packs out early so get their before the crowds....so worth it!

We have been going to Los Barrios since we were kids. The traditional tex mex is amazing- and always consistently good- enchiladas, etc....however they have a dish that is hands down the FAVE for my sister and I- puffy tacos. You really can't get them anywhere like this...absolutely THE BEST- always fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection~...on a recent visit- my nephew ordered a new item (new to us) brochettes tropicales- WOW! The Barrios family just keeps hittin' it out of the park!! Every time relatives come for a visit- they let us know up front- at least one night MUST be dinner at Los Barrios! PS: Not only is the food marvelous, but the servers are fantastic, kind, hard working- & of course if Diana or the other family members are there to stop by- always a treat!

I try to make it out here any time I'm in San Antonio. My go-to order is always the Cortadillo - a spicy beef tenderloin stew similar to Carne Guisada, but BETTER. everything is good on their menu though. I've had the fajitas, fish tacos, and my vegetarian daughter usually gets the enfrijoladas - enchiladas filed with frijoles and cheese. Service is always great, beer or tea is cold, and this place is always busy. Nice to see a mixture of neighborhood amigos plus muchos gringos passing through for some really, really good eats. Picture below was missing the refried beans - I had asked to substitute charro beans.

I've lived in Texas all of my life. I've eaten at hundreds of Mexican restaurants, some more authentic, most Tex-Mex... I love both styles. This is a more authentic Mexican restaurant in my opinion and I'd put it as one of the best ten Mexican food meals I've had in my life. My wife agrees and Mexican restaurants are her favorite. Everything we had here was top notch. My wife had the puffy tacos. Her plate came with three, so I was able to try one. Great. I had the Los Barrios Deluxe. Here is what comes on this amazing plate. 2 Beef Tacos, and 2 Cheese Enchiladas, and a strip of Steak. Served with Spanish rice, refried beans, and guacamole salad. It also came with tortillas for the strip steak. Not surprisingly, I couldn't finish it all. Each dish was perfect for the style. Great flavor in the ground beed. Excellent brown gravy for the enchiladas. The carne asada was flavored well. If we lived in San Antonio we would be regulars here. Service was attentive and spot on and we were there on a Saturday night around 8:30 pm. They were busy but the place is large so we had no wait. There is free parking at the restaurant.

What a disappointment. The beef was like a paste. The taco was mushy. The restrooms were pure filth. I wouldn't go back.

On Monday and Tuesday night they have two for one Fajitas for 18.95 and boy do you get a lot! My wife and I ate all we could at the restaurant and then took enough home to have another meal later. Honestly these are the most flavorful and tender Fajitas I have found anywhere. We go at least once a month.

Overall the food was pretty good, but the puffy tacos were very disappointing. They were not cooked enough to be crisp and fell apart the moment they were served. Then I had kind of soggy shards of masa with my taco salad (what my taco plate turned into as it fell apart). These were my first ever puffy tacos and I had high hopes for them, which were dashed until I went to another restaurant. This might have been just a bad day for the cook, because Los Barrios is known for its puffy tacos, and was featured in a Puffy Taco Throwdown with Bobby Flay. But Bobby would have won hands down had it been the day I was there.

great food a this little spot.. our service was wonderful too Only one problem, they told me their mole reciepe was in their cookbook..I purchased good but no recipe..Be sure to have the Chimichurri sauce--heavy on the garlic, Yum.

Our group had a cooking technique demonstration of enchilada's, guacamole, chocolate pecan pie. She had years of cooking segments on San Antonio morning television. Her local celebrity resulted in guest cooking appearances on National TV shows as "Good morning America," and the Food Network. They have a Los Barrios Family Cookbook that is sold nationally. The salsa is the best I've ever tasted and living in Arizona I have had some really good ones.

Best Tex Mex in SA! The food is excellent and the service is very good. Enchiladas are perfect, great tacos. Chips are fresh and crisp, good salsa. Highly recommended.

We came here after our soccer tournament and had reservations. We had 40 in our group. We did have to wait a little bit because the table ahead of us was "camping out"...but they got us taken care of quickly. I had not been here before, but received a high recommendation from friends who said they were known for their puffy tacos....even said Bobby Flay had a Puffy Taco throw down there. I will tell you, that sold it! The puffy tacos were great, but the NEW LOVE in my LIFE is their chimmichurri sauce! It was amazing! I mixed it into our salsa and our queso and our food. I can't wait to go back. Our waiter was very adept at handling a large crowd. Kudos!

I always dread going out to eat with coworkers because I am vegan and the options are so minimal at the places they want to go. This place has the most incredible vegan veggie fajitas – and the portion is huge! It comes with a large plate of sautéed squashes, broccoli, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, then a side of rice, beans, salad and guacamole. It is the most filling, delicious food and am so thankful they offer this. It is so good that we go back now once a month just to get away from the office. There is also a few other vegetarian items on the menu as well.

Cooking class very simple to follow and fun to watch. Am not a huge fan of this type cuisine but enjoyed every bit of it. If you are in San Antonio, try to get to this restaurant - you'll be glad you did.

Los Barrios is one of the best rated Mexican restaurants I had not yet visited and was longing to go. However I was sorely disappointed We were seated at a table across from the kitchen serving area which was unpleasant and appeared dirty with flies .the beef fijties were grisly and stringy with a tiny serving of pico de Gallo so sorry So disappointing

Truly authentic Mexican food. My wife loved the charro beans and vegetarian enchiladas. The chicken flautas were also good. The service was good. Plenty of chips and salsa. We have been here before and will keep coming back.

This is a casual place for super tasty Mexican food. They have cabrito! in addition to a long menu. We also had shrimp enchilladas with creamy poblano sauce and it was very good. Will definitely return.

The food was good and the live music was a great plus. Puffy tacos are an awesome menu item! We will be coming back next time were in town.

Tasty food. Good service. Told our server we were trying to make a flight. He was awesome getting us drinks, food, and our check. We were in and out in about 20 mins! We couldn't leave town without trying some local Tex Mex! Parking lot might seem full but there's lots of seating inside, and it looks clean and well decorated.

The atmosphere was nice and the food was very good. We enjoyed the chips and salsa. The tortillas were very great. The hostess and wait staff were super nice and very efficient. Nice visit!

Great food. Excellent service all the time! We go here about once a month and their food is consistently good and staff are friendly and accommodating. We've also celebrated birthdays here and the staff makes them super fun! Great for a regular night out or to celebrate a special occasion!

Went there because they used to have best Milanesa in town. (Breaded beef skirt) with home fries, avocados, tomatoes, lemon and rice. Milanesa paler thin. No Flavor. Lemon helped a little. Enjoyed sliced home maxes fried potatoes. Avocado, tomato Got big mound tasteless Mexican rice that I did not eat. Margarita was only fair. Must ask for chips n salsa. Waiter advised me they were very busy but place half empty?

Pescado al Mojo de Ajo Filet of white fish grilled with fresh garlic and lime marinade. Served with arroz jardinera, frijoles a la charra, guacamole salad, and seasonal vegetables. Please allow extra time with this selection. I added flour tortillas Chimichurri and made my own fish tacos. Derick was visiting with us at the table and gave me some tips on making fish tacos. We did have a great meal, as always, and some beverages Y g (y. It was out of the park awesome! We did get the cook book thank you Derick and staff.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. The salsa is great. The food is delicious and the staff is very well trained. I recommend the fajitas and the enchiladas. A little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.

Large group with way ahead reservations. Obviously they were not Really ready for us. Several of our group gave up and left before the food came. We were virtually the first there and last to leave. Very unhappy crowd but now we know.

I recently returned to this restaurant after several years of not eating here. I asked for the caldo (beef soup), and they brought me soup that had been reheated over and over. The meat tasted rancid. The person I was with also returned his food. I chose some nachos. The nachos were extremely salty and the cheese they use had oil residue. It was not appetizing. This place uses to much salt on food and they reheat their foods. Service is poor because many of the wait staff do not understand English, so when ordering it takes 2 or 3 times to get the order straight. When you try to cut corners, it takes away from the restaurant!

We seem to eat here at least once a week. Family owned, and the family owners are often at work. Excellent home-style Tex-Mex. Great story behind the place, but apart from the family and the history (triumph over tragedy at least twice) the food is wonderful. I'm not a puffy taco fan (though this place is well known for them). Enchiladas are great, and the guacamole is simple and near perfect. You will feel at home. If you don't, let Diana or Louis know and they will make it right.

Food was fantastic, friendly people. Would love to return for a second visit! Had something I'd never experienced before, Enfrijoladas, and they were delicious. Salsa and chips were excellent. Lots of green chilies! :) Only thing I'd recommend to know before visit is that it can get a little loud due to the open floor plan and tile decor.

Los Barrios has some of the best local authentic Mexican food in San Antonio. They do have the best beef puffy tacos. Their enchiladas are outstanding too. They have wonderful lunch specials and Early bird specials.

We were here with a tour group and cooking demonstration by Diana Barrios Trevino and then lunch. It was all excelllent! Their margaritas were flavorful. The soft tacos are the best. The enchiladas were some of the best I have ever tasted. It is a very popular restaurant and nationally known. If you are in San Antonio, look it up! Diana and her staff were wonderful.

The enchiladas here are truly exceptional and have that authentic flavor found in only in a Mexican kitchen or a very good restaurant. Fresh homemade tortillas, terrific salsas round out the varied menu.

We tried this place because of the episode of Throw Down with Bobby Flay. We were not disappointed. The puffy tacos were very good. The service was great as well. I would definitely recommend leaving the river walk area and trying this place. We will definitely be back.

Enjoyed a wonderful late lunch at Los Barrios. The mole was absolutely fantastic, perhaps the best I’ve tasted. The puffy tacos were very good, more than worth the 49 cents extra they charge over the regular tacos. Worth noting, the guacamole was also top notch.

We had luck that we had free table, so i highly recommend to make reservation before you go, so popular. The food, even the home made nachos was delicious. The waitress recommended good mexican dark beer, which was perfect choice, if you like dark beers. We ate fajitas, mixed plate for too (mixed means: chicken and beef). We tried home made dessert as well, which had cream cheese and passion fruit jam inside -sorry, forgot the name. Everything was delicious, i would go back with my whole family.

We were looking for a restaurant to go to sans a reservation for a party of five on a Friday night. We called Los Barrios and had a table ready for us by the time we got there. The menu selections were authentic for the area and the food was fresh and delicious. Service was not great but good enough. Ambiance was great for a family Tex-Mex night, it wasn't too loud or too crowded. The outdoor patio looked great but it was wet outside due to the rain. This place beats any big chain Tex-Mex any day. If only all Tex-Mex cuisine was so fresh and delicious.

If you have grown weary of Riverwalk and El Mercado, drive out about 5 miles from downtown to this amazing authentic and historic Mexican restaurant. Family owned for longer than I know, the food is always amazing and the service is spectacular. You won't be sorry! Be sure to try the dessert with the guava and cream cheese. It is definitely worth the calories!

As a fifth generation San Antonian, I grew up frequenting most of the Mexican food institutions (neighborhood as well as tourist) in town, and Los Barrios was one of them. Even though it's only a few miles from my home, I hadn't been in a few years. Friday night we decided to eat there. It all looked the same (several expansions of the years), and the service was solid (thank you, Angel). The food, however, was mediocre at best. Granted we ordered Tex-Mex staples (puffy tacos, enchiladas, etc.) vice the slightly more exotic house specialties (mole, etc.), but, really folks, these used to be exceptional at Los Barrios. Overall, I think tourists will like it. If you're from here, go somewhere else. There are countless places that serve the quality, delicious, comfort food we all love.

The food and service was great the puffy tacos were my favorite! And the margaritas were delicious! I would definitely go back again when we visit SanAntonio again

This restaurant had a lot of memorabilia on the wall. A lot of pictures with food/ travel channel cooks. It seems at one point in time it was a landmark TexMex restaurant. We had dinner on a Monday night about 8:30 pm. They brought us, a party of 7, to the back where a couple of servers were rolling silver and moved the servers and sat us at that table. The restaurant was maybe 15% full they could have brought us somewhere else. Our server was friendly. But all stages of service was very slowly, from the greeting to getting the check (we got up to go pay at the front). We all had different entrees. The main part of our entrees were flavorful, the rice and beans tasted as if they were made in the morning. It was an experience to go. But I would not return. The food wasn't worth the price that was paid for the meal. It's my opinion your paying for what use to be, not what is.

we live in SA and when my husband wants fajitas, this is the place we go. Food is always fresh, never greasy. This place is busy, so enjoy a margarita or beer while you wait. Very well priced.

I hadn't been in years, but heard they won a contest with a food critic / chef / author some time ago for Puffy Tacos. They deserved the win! Was in town for a weekend and sought out Los Barrios on Blanco to try them. We had 2 Puffed Tacos with chicken, and they were excellent! ($3.29 each!). Topped it off with a Chalupa Compuesta ($4.99) and a Carta Blanca ($4.00). The place was spotless, and the service great and friendly. Don't miss it!

This is a clean, upscale Mexican restaurant located in the heart of San Antonio's barrio. Choose from wide range of unique or traditional Mexican dishes. I had the #3: two enchiladas, two crispy tacos and rice. I washed it down with a Modelo beer. Even the free chips and salsa are special. Founded in 1979 by Viola Barrios, she has brought an authentic Mexican menu to serve discriminating tastes. Not your chain store Mexican food!

After a couple of days hanging around downtown i had enough of al the crazy places around the riverwalk. Found this place on Tripadvisor and i have to say its more than worth the drive of 15 minutes to eat real Mexican food! One of the best fajita i had in times! Ask the staff for the real mexican dessert filled with fruit! The waitress had good knowlegde of food and beers. Recommend me a another Mexican beer which was even better than my first choice! Very helpfull and friendly staff. Higly reccomended!

I like to try all kinds of Mexican restaurants and this place has the best chips and salsa I’ve tried in SA thus far. Incredible food and good service. Worth the trip!

Always made sure to go to Los Barrios when in San Antonio, but each visit has gotten worse. Dinner with my girlfriend this time and frankly the food was disgusting. She got chicken puffy tacos and the chicken was tough and didn't taste good. I got an assortment of enchiladas that had five different kinds. There was very little sauce on any of them and they were floating in water on the plate so everything just kind of got mixed together - they were gross. I guess the success of this place has ruined it. I'll be looking for another go to Tex-Mex place in SA. It also seemed much more expensive that it used to be.

It’s sad for us because the food is so good, but we’re not going back again. The Los Barrios on Blanco is filthy. The front facade hasn’t been cleaned in decades. The interior is just as grimy. This place needs a good deep clean and some fresh paint but despite this we kept coming back. The reason we’re through with this place is because they are are now charging $1.99 for a 5 cent basket of chips, which has always been considered a San Antonio tradition in Mexicans restaurants. This is completely unnecessary and offensive considering the owners won’t even clean this restaurant up. They waxed the floors six months ago and still have paper signs on the walls about the floors being waxed. Everyone appreciates a clean modern bathroom. You won’t find it here. Great food, bad everything else.

When in San Antonio you must have Mexican food! We were going to be in San Antonio For 4 days for the NCAA tournament so planned to visit a few of what were supposed to be the top ones. Based on trip advisor reviews we had already had selected 2 Mexican restaurants but decided to try one more on our last day. We selected the #4 Los Barrios for lunch. We had been to the #1 and #5 Mexican restaurants already and wanted one more taste on our last day there. Wow- what a disappointment. The chips came out in the smallest bowl I’ve ever been served chips. They were thicker than most but that was ok. The salsa tasted like it was out of a jar. It was just Ok def nothing to be excited about. Chips and salsa can make or break a restaurant and these were among my least favorite of about my last 25 Mexican restaurants. We ordered the sampler appetizer - there were 5 of us and we didn’t even finish it. Nothing warranted seconds. Taquitos were dry and tasteless, empanadas very thick although the beef filling was tasty, the guacamole tasted like the avocados were old, I had 1 bite and no one else had a second bite. The bean nachos and quesadillas were ok. And the fried jalapeños I’d rate as average. My husband and I ordered the lunch special of 1 cheese enchilada and 1 beef taco - the enchilada was made with American cheese- I like American cheese in a grilled cheese but not in my enchilada, I personally think it needs more zest. The beef taco shell was good- crunchy but the beef was hardly there. Rice was good and I didn’t try the beans. No one raved about anything they had unlike nearly every other meal we had while in San Antonio. We were constantly saying how good our food was. Not this time😞. This was a mediocre meal at best. If it had been rated 30 or 40 under all the Mexican I’d have understood but it fell way below the # 1 and #5 we had gone to the days before. Meals like this frustrate me and leave me questioning trip advisor ratings. I guess I should have suspected a problem when it was 11:30 and we were only the 3rd table in there. All other restaurants this trip have been near full capacity. I cannot recommend this restaurant.

Great food and good service. We had flameado with chorizo, shredded chicken puffy taco, guacamole puffy taco, salsa and chips, chicken quesadilla- one flour tortilla and one corn tortilla. All are better than average. I highly recommend the food. Nice restaurant and parking lots are well lit at night. My only issue and reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the high prices. Most items seemed overpriced so be prepared if you visit.

We have been to this resaurant many times but I doubt we will go back. The food was just okay but the margarita was terrible! Nothing more than colored water with a little sugar. The worst I've ever had!

Not worth the money. The was not good and i'm not that picky. I ordered the special beef that tasted like beans.

I was there recently for a family luncheon. So, I'm reviewing this place because as a San Antonio native of long-standing, I know my Mexican eateries. So, not so much Los Barrios. Maybe it was just their luncheon menu that was so poor -- very salty carne guisada - I mean, tears-formed-in-my-eyes salty. The enchiladas were swamped in chili con carne. I know that this is the SA way, but let them live before you choke them. A relative wondered if the enchiladas had Velveeta in them. That bad, really. Maybe go during a less rushed time? Maybe that was it.

I only gave 4 stars because we had to pay 1.99 for chips and salsa. The food was good and our server was awesome. I just find it crazy that we had to pay for chips and salsa when every other mexican restaurant gives it complimentary. It was also crazy to me that they offered a complimentary picture of you at the restaurant. We have our own phone to take selfies/pictures. It would be nice to put that expense on giving free chips and salsa. I will say the flour tortillas were amazing as well as the guacamole.

All I can say is, WOW! It reminded me of a trip we took to Cabo San Lucas. Friendly service and great food. If I'm ever back in San Antonio, I will return.

Modest portions. Great flavor. Will definitely return. One exception, salsa was delicious, chips were thick and unseasoned. Flour tortillas were excellent. Live mariachis. Nice atmosphere. Ample dining space.

Having previously lived in San Antonio I had often dined at Los Barrios and enjoyed the place so much that I really looked forward to doing so again. What's more, I invited eight friends along to introduce them to the authentic tex-mex cuisine. Unfortunately, the place has changed drastically in the past fifteen years. I would suggest that their popularity led to complacency and a decline in quality, service and value. The first thing I noticed was the tackiness of the reception area. Who goes to a well renowned restaurant to buy tawdry souvenir trinkets and tee shirts? This spoils the expectations. Or maybe that is the idea? Also evident immediately is the insane noise level. No quiet murmurs from diners here, just the full throated roar of a football stadium crowd. Even ordering was an exercise in yelling at the waiter and yelling back any answers. Service was fast and efficient, but at the expense of a lot of yelling. Of course we all ordered Margaritas. They were good, not great. I suspect a slurpy machine was somewhere around the corner. Appetizers were nachos. Again, good, not great, mostly beans with a bit of carne and queso on top, all melded to a goopy texture. I ordered the enchiladas and was profoundly disappointed. They were so dried out the tortillas were stuck to the plate. The refried beans were just a smear of watery paste. Everyone at the table pretty well agreed that if this was the best Los Barrios could do we would not be going back. The price of drinks and dinner also seems to have gone up steeply in the interim. This was a large crowd, so a mandatory service charge was included, so the total was considerably higher than I would have expected.

This is not the best tasting Mexican food in town (in my opinion) but it is good and the atmosphere is lively and vibrant. The chicken mole enchiladas were very good, but the burrito supper smelled funny and seemed like the frozen ones you get at Dairy Queen--full of a non-descript meat paste, yuk! Service was very poor, but it was clear that our server had WAY too large of a section...perhaps they were short staffed.

I am a native of San Antonio and even though I am a "gringo" I consider myself a connoisseur of Tex Mex food. At age 66 I have not eaten at every good Tex Mex restaurant in San Antonio, but I have been dining at Los Barrios on Blanco (the original) since 1985. It is the only restaurant I have ever been to in my life multiple times that I have NEVER had a bad meal. Granted, if you have one dish that you have to have then you might find a restaurant that makes that one dish the way you really like it, but I have to say if I was on Death Row my last meal would be Los Barrios' cheese enchiladas and a puffy taco or two. There is a reason that the Food Network chef's (Emeril and Bobby Flay) came to Los Barrios when they came to San Antonio. Ask for Mac as a waiter and his service will knock your socks off!

After asking the locals for a great Tex Mex restaurant it seemed Los Barrios was the choice. My friend and I went to the restaurant and were seated immediately. The salsa was really good as well as the chips. We both selected combination platters which were very good, but nothing more than I could get close to home in MD at a good Mexican restaurant. Was wishing I had ordered the "puffy tacos" as I later found out they won in a Bobby Flay Throwdown!. Maybe next time. Service was good

We met up with family at Los Barrios. They have been dining here for years, and I can understand why. The food is fresh and delicious. It was suggested that I try the Puffy Tacos and I did. They (chicken and guacamole) were both fantastic. I could barely eat both of them, as they are very filling. The chips and salsa are both very good. Everyone enjoyed their meal! Definitely and must visit while in San Antonio!

Been eating there for 20 yrs. Lived in SA for 50 yrs. Waiter took drink orderand asked any Chips n Salsa? Sure! Ok thats 1.99$ What!!!!? Owner came to table and gave Chips n Salsa 101--they r freshly cut and fried in special oil, and served hot. I am not interested in how they are made. This is the Best City for Mexican food, and it is a small expectation to eat those tasty, crunchy chips complimentary. There are many more restaurants choose one, Not Here!

Best Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio. Ask to be served by Mac or Henry. If you return, Mac will remember your drink and food order. Ask for Henry's salsa.

Had one night in town for a dinner and picked this Mexican place among the many in San Antonio. Great choice! The food was delicious and our server was super attentive even during the high traffic dinner hour rush. I would definitely come back and try another dish the next time I am in town!

Go on Monday for the fajita special. Great price and great food. One of the best Mexican restaurants in SA.

Great dinner! My husband and I enjoyed excellent chicken and beef fajitas for two and good frozen margaritas!

This review is not about the food, although it is great, it is about the service and management. My church went there on a Sunday for lunch without a reservation. We had 30 people and they seated us in less than 15 minutes. They had another party of 40 and 20 to serve also. Thank you for accomadating us on short notice.

A wonderful dinner with my family the food was outstanding the service was impeccable and everybody so so friendly highly recommended for a wonderful evening. The marachi band was just great.

Try the puffy taco. Great flsvor. Also had the burrito dinner and a couple of the house margaritas. Excellent food. The guacamole was awesome.

While in town for business, an old friend took my wife and I for dinner. Located outside the downtown core, it is worth the drive. Great authentic food and good staff.

Went here for the first time with some of my family. The hostess was very accommodating and we were sat right away. Our margaritas were very good although my husband ordered his without salt in Spanish and in English yet they still brought it out with salt. We ordered some queso with chorizo which didn't come out either but they took it off of our bill in the end. I had the puffy tacos with chicken. The chicken had good flavor but the puffy tacos were a little soggy. Overall, the food was good and the margaritas were good. I would probably go again next time I'm in San Antonio but I'll try something different to eat.

Looked for a restaurant near Breckenridge Park, that had good on-line reviews, and the prices were reasonable. This spot hit the triple win on a recent visit to San Antonio. Seating was comfortable, salsa was good but not too hot, portions were excellent, and the wait staff were prompt and polite. Even the owner came by to greet us and make us feel welcome. Would love to visit again on another trip to area!

Met with friends after church for lunch. Had a sampler plate of enchiladas and it was plenty with good flavor. It was rather busy and service refected that, waited 45 minutes to get our food. Good thing the server kept bring out free chips and salsa. Would return just not on Sunday during the church crowd.

Good Rita's and food. Reasonable prices. Good for families. Mariachi band was present the night we were there. Not in the Riverwalk area.

We always eat at Los Barios when visiting SA. Great mexican food- cabrito, shrimp. Best frozen Margaritas. And don't miss the empenada. It is not on the menu, but is a must.

We went with a group of 12 (including 3 children under 5) on a Saturday evening and were able to get a table immediately!! The food was excellent - service was phenomenal.

Stopped by this week while on vacation. I always like to try out new places. This place will be on my must see list every time I'm in San Antonio. The food was great as was the service. They have great Margaritas and a live band.

We were there last Thursday and had Nachos and enchiladas. Everything was excellent and service was great too. Price was right and House margaritas perfect. We will be back.

We met some some friends at Los Barrios. They had been here years before and invited us to join them at one of their "San Antonio favorites." BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT: The food was as good as they remembered, and memory making for us too! They had the El Mofofo Grill - it was a mountain of food! The menu says "for two or more." The "more" is like 4-6 people. The two of them ate all night on it and barely made a dent. I had the #3 Plate Taco Deluxe and my wife had the less filling #5 Lady's Special. We've lived in San Antonio for over 8 years now and this was likely the best Tex-Mex we've eaten. Our server, didn't do a "bad" job, but he gave us the impression that he was either not interested in being there, or was not interested in us being there. He did the requisite things, but made no effort to make us feel like paying customers. DEAR MANAGEMENT: YOUR FOOD IS EXCELLENT. YOUR STAFF NEEDS TO KNOW WHO PAYS THEIR SALARY. Your "less than enthusiastic' waiter was the only thing that kept my review out of the 5 star range.

We were here as part of a large group for a wedding party dinner. The food was good. The drinks were good too. Our server Robert did a great job serving us and bringing us our food and drinks in a timely manner. He checked on us often and cleared our table when needed. Thank you Robert for making this dining experience great.

This place was horrible, and completely over priced. $10.49 for Tex-Mex enchiladas with cheese. The meal did not include beans and rice. $10.49 FOR three enchiladas. The drinks were completely over priced, 12.25 for a garbage margarita. They added Patron with out me asking, this was evident by the 2.25 up charge. Horrible, horrible, horrible! STAY AWAY!!!

Consistently good food. Can be loud. Seating outside is nice but service can be slow out there. Very good tortillas and enchiladas.

We first visited this place about 3 years ago because we have and use their cook book. I remember we enjoyed everything. This time we went just before the dinner rush really got going. We were seated quickly and our chips and drink orders happened in a reasonable time. I normally stay traditional with places I visit rarely but this time I ordered the Enchiladas de Camaron. It was really rather good. The wife had Taquitos de Pueblo, also very good. One child had plain tamales without chili; they were tasty but a bit dry. The other kiddo had a grilled cheese (I know, I know...). Staff was friendly. Server was quick to answer any questions. Restaurant was clean for a place that has been there for years. A lot of local history here. While its not our top SA restaurant, it is one we always try to get to.

If you like TexMex this is the place to go. The atmosphere is traditional, the service is really ok. The chicken salad is pretty big and very interesting. My friends really like this place and it is quite popular but if you prefer Mexican food go elsewhere. Ask for a breakfast menu if you can't find anything you like on the dinner menu.

I visited Los Barrios as part of a large group (about 15 of us) on a Saturday. They handled the group like professionals. The food here was pretty good. It's fairly standard Tex Mex. I've had much better and I've had much worse. We started with Queso Flamadeo. It came out flaming which excited the kids. It was very good. For lunch, I had shrimp enchiladas and I enjoyed them. Others in the group ordered a variety of tacos, enchiladas and fajitas. Most enjoyed their meals. One person ordered the garlic shrimp and it was horrible. Tasted more like lemon than garlic. The margaritas were pretty good too. Our waiter was really very good. He handled the large group professionally and always with a smile. So the food is average Tex Mex. The wait staff is way above average. It's a good place to try.

Cheese enchiladas is the dish I judge all Tex Mex restaurants by. Los Barrios's were very good. We met a friend there and it was perfect for carrying on a conversation and there was no wait for a table. Our waitress was very attentive.

I Goggled “best Mexican food” in San Antonio and Los Barrios was on list of 12 best Mexican food restaurants. We have eaten at about 40 Mexican food restaurants in SanAntonio, but never here. So this was our first visit. Arrived about 6PM on Friday. No wait, but the restaurant was busy. Looks like a regular neighborhood type establishment with repeat customers. Service was prompt and efficient. Atmosphere is pleasant. Seating is probably for 150, so it’s pretty big. So far so good. We had your basic Mexican food, enchiladas, rice, beans, tacos, chips, salsa. Nothing was spectacular. Not even close. We are a 66 year old couple and have had better meals at Taco Bell. The cook is heavy handed with the salt. The salsa was so salty we asked for it to be replaced, but no better. It was too salty to eat. Just not what we expected on our first and i know will be our last visit. What bothered me too, was they placed the salty salsa on the table, but then charge for chips!

I have been there only once so far but for sure i will revisit this place. Food was amazing. It was delicious, i felt full and happy. Taco with shrimps, love it!

Was busy and just happened to drive by before my next meeting and close to where I was going. So glad I did. Service was great to start and all the way thru. Ordered and then came out some wonderful seasoned salsa, with a little taste of spicy. Chips were crunchy and salty--just the way I like. Tea was well flavored. I had a lunch special with verde enchilada and stuffed burrito. Would highly recommend. Only negative was no Spanish music playing....which I listen to all the time anyway, so not a real big deal.

I have eaten in this restaurant for over 40 years. The guacamole is without question the best I have eaten day in and day out for every day of that time. Plus one can order a side of guacamole or a larger salad which not every restaurant will do. U It is the quintessential neighborhood Mexican restaurant but the best of that genre in San Antonio. I live in Denver, but when I get home to SA even if only for a short weekend this is where we go. And it is not my neighborhood! Never has been, just has always been well worth trip.

I have been here twice and is on my list of Favorites in SA!! The server asked for our order so he could put it in ahead of a large group. We had two children with us and we appreciated the thought so they wouldn’t have to wait. Food was great and there was no wait to be seated!!!

The food and service are always good. And the atmosphere is relaxing. Great place to take people from out of town. Always go there with family when we can. We live here and know where the best places to eat are. This is one of them!

Viola Barrios, from Bustamante Mexico, started this restaurant in 1979. It is still owned and operated by her family. If you want genuine Tex Mex Mexican food that the locals love, this is the place. It’s a down home, family style restaurant. Nothing fancy here, but definitely first class in many ways. Great margaritas too!

Off the beaten path, a few minutes driving from the Riverwalk, is an authentic and inventive Mexican Restaurant. You may have seen it on the Bobby Flay throw down where he conceded victory to Diana Barrios in the Puffy Taco cookoff, on Emeril's show on Food Network or heard about serving their delicious food at the White House. Yes, it is that good! What is amazing is how reasonably priced and family friendly it is. Multiple dining areas allows for quick seating, even with larger parties. Casual dining and friendly staff make ordering a breeze and we have never had a bad meal. Owners Louis and Diana Barrios stop by the table to make sure everything is perfect. Following Louis's suggestions I ordered empanadas with chimichurra sauce, guacamole puffy tacos and a guava and cream cheese empanada for dessert. I just can't tell you how good that meal tastes. Have a margarita and it is a perfect meal.

When Los Barrios opened 36 years ago in a redecorated Dairy Queen building, we were living nearby and dropped in to try out the new Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood. We have since moved away from San Antonio, but manage to return several times each year. This week we returned with a group of family & friends to celebrate a birthday, and realized it still has the same excellent food and attentive, friendly service which has made Los Barrios our location of choice for special occasions. For this visit, we had reserved for a party of 12, and our table was ready for us on arrival. I ordered the same meal I had during that first visit so long ago, and the Filete a la Tampiquena was even better than I remembered it to be. Others in the party ordered a variety including; Enchiladas Verdes, Puffy Tacos, Chile Rellenos and basic Tex-Mex combination plates. Everyone was impressed with the quality of the food & drinks.

This restaurant is "Phenomenal " from the staff to the puffy tacos. The owner was so welcoming it was 18 of us. We were sitter within 15 minutes of entering the restaurant and no we did not have reservations. All of our food came out together no one had to wait and no mistake with the orders. Everything was just perfect. Diana came out to meet us as well. It is a lot of history in this restaurant with several celebrities that have eaten these delicious puffy tacos. My dad is a extremely picky eater and he had nothing but "Good Outcome" his plate was cleaned. You know Diana took puffy tacos to the White House when Pres Obama was in office. The price is ridiculous reasonable. Outdoor sitting available. Family environment. I know there's a lot of restaurant in San Antonio but before you go out for tacos please stop here I promise you will not regret it, matter of fact you will definitely be back.

This is the second visit for me to this restaurant. Both times I've had the El Mofofo which is a marinated beef and pork grill served on a portable flame. Includes grilled onions, green bell peppers and green olives. You also get a generous portion of guacamole, beans and rice, choice of flour or corn tortillas. I also ordered a skinny Margarita "La Flacita" which is the BEST skinny Margarita I've ever had. This is a restaurant where members of the Barrios family, the owners, come to your table to see how your doing. Today it was Diana who came to our table twice, very nice lady. This restaurant is an old tradition in San Antonio. Right now there's road construction going on outside the business, but that doesn't stop the people from coming in to get delicious food and drinks. If you want a different treat, get the El Mofofo. This will feed 2 - 4 people so make sure there are enough of you to enjoy it.

We were not impressed. Supposed to be authentic food. Just wasn't what we expected. Food was dried out. Would not recommend.
