Sauce is good on everything

By TAMAN1951 |

Even the sliced bread. The sides are good but you really come for the meat and it is awesome. Good smoke on the ribs and perfect tenderness. No unite fall off the bone but it is exactly the way it needs to be for great BBQ. The brisket was tender and flavorful You pay by the pound so portion size is variable. The homemade sausage has a different texture but is great flavor. A little pricy but worth it.

Excellent ribs

By Mary H |

We’ve been eating at Luling’s since they opened in Houston over 30 years ago and their ribs are big and juicy. They also make their own sausage which is lean and very tasty. Their brisket is well seasoned and tender. They have 3 sides: potato salad, cole slaw and pinto beans. Desserts are brownies and pecan pie. All served buffet style. Their barbecue sauce is tangy and very tasty.

The Best Barbeque Ever

By Joanne13018 |

I hired Lulings to cater my wedding reception. They were on time and friendly. I don't think I have ever eaten any better brisket. I had more compliments on the food. We had brisket, chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, beans, bread and all the fixings'. Everything was excellent. Thank you so much Lulings.

Good BBQ right in Houston

By xplnusa |

I was in Houston for one night. We had dinner next door. HOWEVER. We had eaten lunch at City Market in Luling TX. so when I saw this place i had to go in and get a ring to see if it was the same... It wasn't quite as good as the one in Luling, but still pretty damn good! I'd go again.

Tender Brisket!!

By Rita H |

Wow! What can I say? Tender, fall apart brisket, great potato salad. Soooo good!!!! We heard it was recommended by the locals, and that means everything!!

Can I give 0 stars??

By MLMD11 |

OK, folks. Let's start with the fact that I have been to Luling's 3-4 times. I went the first time because I heard it was great. After tasting their "BBQ", I figured it must have been an off day. The second and third time - forgettable. The ONLY reason why I ordered from there (pick up) was because we were doing training at the office and my employees asked for it. Dry, tasteless, and WOW are they proud of their food. We ordered 2 gallons of iced tea. The bill - for JUST the iced tea - was OVER $40!!! 2 gallons. Of iced tea. I called the restaurant whereas I though this MUST be a mistake. I got attitude and a "you should have looked at your bill". When I told them I ordered it over the phone, they LITERALLY said "that is not our problem". The food is worse than McD's BBG rib thing. Do NOT call this Texas BBQ....call it a scam. Enough said.

Skip it...Luling is living off its reputation

By coylepeninsula |

I had a disappointing lunch at Luling City today. Dry and relatively tasteless potato salad, dry brisket, and mediocre pork ribs. Even a heavy dose of BBQ sauce didn't mitigate the lack of flavor And all those items (1/2 pound brisket, 2 ribs, tea and potato salad) was $17 for lunch. I wouldn't have minded the cost if the food was spectacular. But sadly, not. Maybe a trip to the original store in Luling would be worth it, but the location on Richmond was not.

The worst BBQ ever

By Teddybear57 |

We went in for lunch yesterday and had sausage and potato salad. The sausage was extremely dry like somebody cooked the hell out of it. The potato salad had no flavor. It was the worst BBQ that I have ever had. We will never go back to eat there. How does this place stay in business ? Texas is supposed to be famous for its BBQ. I should have asked for my money back because the food was that bad.

Awesome Brisket

By John F |

This is a must visit when I'm in the Houston area. Awesome brisket and links, you get the typical bbq sides that will not disappoint. It's a small friendly place with bar inside as well.

An interesting place for lunch

By mefinVA |

This restaurant is very down home and very local. We would never have stopped in if someone hadn't recommended it. The BBQ is not what I expected. You order, cafeteria style, and everything is by weight and a la carte. I chose the brisket; there is one barbecue sauce on the table. If I'd thought about it a little more, I would have ordered a little bit of everything, because you can indicate how much you want and pay for it by weight. Our cousins said the ribs were incredible. The brisket was ok but not as good as I expected.

Chananana

By Chamanana |

Heard lots of good stuff about this place. I was a bit disappointed. Barely average food that was waaaay overpriced - I got 2 ribs, a small bowl of beans, and a glass of tea and it was $12.44!! Soft drink machine was broken. Staff spoke only when I asked questions - I'm here on business from Dallas and it was my first time to eat here - so I had several questions. Go they a line to get food answer its served on a piece of paper. I won't go back.

Great BBQ, in the heart of Houston

By Houba1 |

Great brisket, chicken and turkey. Cafeteria style ordering. Great BBQ sauce, too. Lot's of TV's, good spot to eat and watch a game. Full bar, too.

Favorite BBQ in Houston

By L C L |

Great brisket, ribs, beans, potato salad. Fresh tea served in small plastic cups- not huge goldfish bowls. Plenty of pickles and vinegar-y sauce make for a highly satisfying experience. I much prefer Luling to Goode Co these days....

Great BBQ, sauce is amazing, sell by weight

By Sarah C |

This was a first for us. Being from California we wanted to find some BBQ. You walk in and you have 5 or so meat options...by the weight. No value menu combo deals here, you must commit to 1/4 pound of something. The meats are typically brisket, ribs, sausage, etc. I went for 1/4 pound brisket, 1/4 pound ribs, and a sausage (flat price $4.50). Total came out to something like $11, with the meat being $3.75 a 1/4 pound. The brisket was perfectly cooked, the ribs fatty but delicious, and the sausage homemade and amazing. Tip: the BBQ sauce in the bottles on the table is the nectar of the gods. Runny, mustardy, a little spicy...good but doesn't detract from the meat flavor.

Disappointing, but not for quality of food

By M T |

The quality of the BBQ at Luling's is average, perhaps a cut above. In fact, I might have provided a 4/5 review had it not been for a few irksome features of the restaurant and its service: 1. I don't like to pay extra for items that I get for free at other restaurants. In fact, virtually all BBQ restaurants offer such condiments as jalapenos, pickles, onions, etc., at no extra charge. Not so at Luling's. Want a jalapeno? That'll be 20 cents. I took three--60 cents, thank you. 2. At Luling's, you pay by the pound (or fraction thereof) for the meat. No sandwiches, no platters, just pay by weight. I had sliced beef and sausage; my beef weighed 0.28 pounds, and the staff ensured that I was charged for the extra .03 pounds over the posted quarter pound price. I don't remember the exact charge for the sausage. Come on, Luling--do other BBQ joints weigh the meat in their sandwiches and charge the diner to the nearest hundredth of a pound? 3. Mustard sauce? Come on! This is Texas, not South Carolina! Back to item 1, readers may counter my beef (ouch) by lecturing me on total cost--those other restaurants don' t really provide the condiments for free, but factor the cost into their meal pricing. Of course that is true, and that point would be a valid rebuttal if the pricing at Luling's were below average. Not so--my meal (less than 1/2 pound of meat, 3 jalapenos, beans, and an iced tea) cost over $16. Oh, and the staff (at least those I interacted with) are surly. I really don't like that. I probably won't go back. There are too many good BBQ options in Texas.

Unique BBQ Experience

By rdadd33 |

We decided to stop and see what the rave reviews were about, and weren't disappointed. The experience of ordering your meat choice and then ordering your vegetable and drink choice was quite unique. The ribs we ordered were delicious, but we've had better. It might have been due to variables such as the meat, the cook, our hunger factor, etc. All it all it was a good experience and we would return whenever we're in the area.

Great Houston BBQ ......

By TXJayhawk3501 |

I have been to nearly all worthwhile BBQ spots in Houston and Luling is my favorite when I'm in town. I moved from Houston to KC --also great BBQ town--and when in Houston I try to make it here. Brisket, links (make their own) and ribs are all excellent on their own, but I also like their unique sauce. A classic "weigh and pay"-- tell them what you want, and you pay by the pound. I'm not a big fan of their beans -- there are better out there. The place is rustic, so a perfect environment. Also has a dedicated bar. I usually pick up some sauce and rub to take home with me. Located on Richmond and 610, near the Galleria. You will be glad you stopped in!

Very quiet, simple dining, authentic and good food

By knr |

We were surprised by the restaurant, as it was very quiet and simple. You actually order you food in the back room - the smokehouse itself! There are no dishes. You eat off brown butcher paper, use plasticware and drink from soda cans. The food is great. We had brisket and ribs. The sauce is on the sweet side, which I didn't like, but the brisket was so flavorful and good that it didn't need anything with it. In Houston, most restaurants are loud with the music and people having to talk louder over the music. This restaurant was quiet, no music. In fact, it seemed like people were whispering. It was a very pleasant change from what we were used to. Even a local policeman recommended this restaurant to us, even though we were already looking for it.

Best BBQ in Houston

By marymorr |

In my opinion best BBQ in Houston. You will see people come in and buy brisket by the pound. Full bar.

One of the best

By TAMAN1951 |

Great BBQ but sometimes inconsistent. The brisket was flavorful with nice smoke. The spicy links were great and spicy but not too spicy. The chicken was a little dry. Sides are OK but not the reason to go there. The service is unremarkable. The prices are high for BBQ.

Consistently the best in Houston

By FishinTexan |

I had a long lunch today. So headed over to one of my favorite bbq joints. Just inside the loop on Richmond, this little dive serves some of the best barbeque in the city. Skip any sides, that's bush league, as far as I am concerned. Just get meat and maybe some pickle and onions. The meat is moist and succulent regardless of the type. The sausage rings remind so much of the barbeque joints in Luling, Texas. Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. I cant get back there fast enough!!!

Lunch

By PandaExperience |

When you enter you are in an old barbecue admosphere smell and all. The barbecue was good. I love the barbecue sauce, a little spicy.

Finger Licking Good!

By gayla |

We stopped in for lunch and glad we did...by Noon the line was out the door! Great Texas Bar B Que sold by the pound with your choice of sides to compliment the meal. The brisket was tender and very tasty with just the right anount of smoke. The sausage links are sold individually and were good......we split one! This is not a large place.......so get there early! Parking is also tight at Noon!

Outstanding BBQ

By kemoszabe |

This is West Texas Hill Country pit style BBQ, with a vinegar based sauce. They don't mess with rubs as much as we do in Oklahoma, but that's okay because the smokey BBQ flavor stands on its own without much help. I'm new to the vinegar based sauces so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I found it very tasty and it was freshly made - great flavor! Since it is served by weight you can get any combination of foods you want, brisket, ribs, pork, links, turkey, etc. It's served on butcher's paper so don't expect fancy plates and silverware, but you won't care after the first bite. There's a bar in Luling City Market so you can wash it down with a beer or two as well. It was recommended to me by a couple of folks that I have worked with in the past, and I definitely pass along their recommendation. Give this place a try.

Always great

By George Y |

Luling City Market has this lone outpost in Houston and it’s an overlooked gem in my opinion. The brisket, turkey and particularly the sausage are as good as it gets. They crank up the mesquite early. They have an interesting bar up front and dining and ordering counter in the back.

Great Texas bbq

By travelerfrom518 |

Everyone I go Houston I stop by this little place for some old fashioned bbq brisket. The brisket is a great cut and cooked to perfection. Bbq sauce is just okay, that's why it loses a star. The bar is also separate from the chow line so if you want a beer, you need to make two transactions.

The best ribs and chicken

By Mary H |

My husband and had lunch here and, as usual, the ribs were spectacular ! They are meaty, moist and flavorful. I also had the chicken which was very moist and delicious . It was not dried out like a lot of chicken can be. The sides of beans, slaw and potato salad are always good and you get generous portions! Everything is a la carte. We have been eating here since in opener in the 80s and have never been disappointed. They make their own sausage which is lean and tasty.

Pink Sauce Ain't BAD

By jerivillages |

Houston has many great Bar B Que place.. This one near the Galleria is very good. I like the loose cut with all the wonderful fat and black exterior. Side were above par.!

Mediocre

By Delaw |

Long time resident of Houston. Relented to a trip to Luling City because of traffic congestion to get to Goode Company our intended destination. What a mistake. Our plates were individually @ $17 for a quarter pound of brisket, half a link and two sides. It is served on butcher paper. Clever, but difficult to cut without cutting the paper. The restaurant was so cold that the brisket was almost immediately cold. It was ok but not "juicy and full of flavor" as one of the other reviews reports. The link was odd; very crumbly and rather unpleasant. The cole slaw was flavorless. The beans were good - just. Unlike other BBQ joints, this one appears to have a full bar where there was some lively consumption. Maybe the BBQ would have tasted better after a few drinks. I would not return because it just wasn't as good as I have had elsewhere and I thought it was overpriced for the quantity and certainly, quality.

Horrible Barbecue

By Max G |

Horrible barbecue! We should have taken it as an omen...when walking into the restaurant at dinner time there were folks at the bar, but no one was eating. We tried the ribs, brisket and sausage. All were bad. The food was generally overcooked (or held far too long in warming trays) and lacked any kind of flavor. When you can pick up a rib and the meat falls off, it's overcooked. The fatty/moist portion of brisket was mostly overcooked fat. The spicy sausage had no flavor. Stay away, there are far better barbecue joints in Houston.

Great BBQ

By Grewalski |

Popped in here due to a local recommendation and we weren't disappointed. Great bar, sports on the tv and a really good bbq. Brisket was very tender. Simple but wholesome food - nothing fancy but home cooked - style food with decent beer.

One of the best

By mhempen199 |

By far, one of the best BBQ places in the city. BUT... you'll pay for it, so just accept it, lol. Most folks get meat by the pound, served on butcher paper and you get bread to go with it. Or you can opt for a less expensive sandwich option. I had a sliced beef sandwich with a side of slaw and a water for about 11.50.

Good BBQ decent prices

By aer8301 |

This is a whole in the wall. Nothing fancy. Meat sold by the pound. Minimal options for sides and drinks but BBQ is great and love the BBQ sauce! Long line around prime lunch time. But we always stop here when headed from Houston to the hill country 😊

Good Lean Brisket

By Sweetie333 |

Stopped here for dinner. We ordered link lean brisket juicy brisket potatoes salad and beans. White bread is given with your order. You order by the 1/2 pound or pound. The atmosphere is a bit older and we were the only people eating in the restaurant while there were a few people at the bar. This is not a fancy place so shorts and tee shirts are fine. There are many places in Houston to eat BBQ think I will try somewhere else next time. Food was just okay.

Simply the Best

By WynneWoody |

Luling City Market is a Houston tradition for real Texas BBQ. It is "rustic" and the food is served via a serving line, on butcher paper, so don't go there expecting great ambiance, but on the other hand, it's a barbeque joint. If you want ambiance, go to a Landry's or to Goode Company. If you want the best barbeque Houston has to offer, go to Luling City Market. Their ribs, brisket and smoked chicken are the best I've had anywhere. Luling City and Houston Barbecue Company (way out west on Eldridge) are run by a father and son, respectively, and their food is identical. The meat is slow-smoked and served without sauce, which is how good Texas barbecue is supposed to be. They have their own unique sauce available on the tables, but it is not a sweet, catsup-based sauce like some folks are used to. It is more tangy. But even if the sauce is not to your liking, the meat is a treat all by itself. On any evening, you can get a little taste of "local culture" just by watching and listening to the "regulars" at the bar.

Awesome sausage and ribs

By TexanChuck |

Love this place! Been going here for over 20 years. They have the best sausage I've ever had. Love their sauce, just a little on the piquant side. Ribs were perfect. Great place, hands down!

Stay away

By muellers_valley |

I was really looking forward to my first Texas BBQ. This place was recommended to me by a colleague. What should I say - Brisket was too cold and totally tasteless - I doubt they have ever seen a smoker. The ribs - oh well - a waste of time to even talk about them.

Great BBQ

By jtaylor52 |

I really like this place. It is different and a little off the beaten path but well worth taking the detour. If you normally stop at Buc-cee's on I-10 between Houston and San Antonio try changing it up and stop at City Market in downtown Lulling. It is only about 6 or 7 miles north of Buc-cees. The BBQ is great, I really like the sausage and the ribs which is really funny because I don't eat sausage or ribs any place else.

Been Around a Long Time

By Joseph L |

The food here is very good and authentic. They do one thing and they do it well. Please try their sauce, it is served at room temperature and it is amazing.

BEST IN TOWN

By GlucaFst |

I am italian, and when I asked for a local restaurant in town similar to an italian trattoria but very traditional and very local a friend of mine was taking me here at luling. Simply the meat is delicious, tender and tasty and of very good quality. The restaurant is well attended by locals and the athmosphere is pure texan. I love this place and evry time I am in town I pass by... very cool place. My favorite.

Perfectly smoked BBQ

By sasweeties |

Luling City Market BBQ - in Houston and in Luling, Texas, has perfectly smoked Brisket, Ribs, etc., that are not ruined by excessive spicy rubs. The smokey flavor is the star of these establishments, not the spices. The meat was perfectly done, juicy, and tender. If you like a little spice, simply add the BBQ sauce.

Very disappointing

By GKBrash |

Asked the people in the office about a good place for BBQ. They suggested Luling City Market. My North Carolina BBQ loving compadre and I drove over and we were hungry. We walked in and it smelled really good. You order item by weight. They had items like brisket, pork ribs, smoked turkey, links, chopped beef, sliced beef and pork loin. They also had sides of potato salad, pinto beans and cole slaw. I ordered the pork ribs, spicy link and pork loin. I also ordered the potato salad. For the price the side of potato salad was small, but it it did taste good. The meats are another issue. Even with the City Market BBQ sauce the meats were a bit dry. The tastiest of the three items was the spicy link but it too needed the sauce to make it a bit moist. All in all we were disappointed in the offerings and would not consider going back. There have to be better BBQ places in Houston.

A little different from what I am used to

By MTLotts |

Stopped in while visiting Houston. Everything is sold individually or by the pound. This is a little different than what we are used to for BBQ restaurants. This turned out to be pretty convenient because we could get exactly what we wanted. We got a selection of brisket, ribs, sausage, and a variety of sides. The brisket was the best. Didn't really care for the potato salad. The meats had a great smoke flavor and although not needed, I liked their sauce.

Luling City Market Rocks!!!

By Wander68312336158 |

THIS IS THE BEST BBQ IN MY EYES AND ALWAYS WILL BE. I GREW UP EATING HERE! VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE CREW IN THE BACK COOKING THE MEAT. PRETTY STELLAR INDIVIDUALS 👌 ✨️

Grest Texas BBQ

By ismedavis |

Having both eaten here and had them cater an event I can say without a doubt that these guys are the most reliable and quality BBQ joint in Houston. The food is great. Every element of their resturaunr has been fine tuned over the years. Staff are friendly and good at their jobs, especially those who cater. Meat there is probably the best I've ever had, and in contrast with some of the other reviews, paying by the pound does make sense (welcome to Texas you Yankees). Also, do not over look the sides and condiments, as they are world class (especially the pickles). Every time we have eaten there the line has run out the door, but it moves very quickly. If your looking for excelent BBQ, head on down to Luling City Market.

A very good place for BBQ Ribs !!

By FAM1955 |

Luling is close to the Galleria shopping mall. The place is very simple; you make a line and decide what do you want: Brisket, Ribs or Chicken.... some bread.... that's it. Good part is that you decide the amount of food that you want..... have some small desserts.... as for drinks you go to the bar, order and pay your drink and sit.... very plain and simple but the food , if you like ribs, is one of the best in Houston!!!

Don't miss this place!

By MrH0bbes |

This is one of our favorite barbecue places in Houston. The brisket is consistently good, always with a nice, smoky flavor and never too fatty. The sausages are some of the best in Texas, dense and flavorful. The ribs also are nicely seasoned and flavorful. The sauce is excellent! We always buy some to take home with us. I definitely recommend stopping in and enjoying some good barbecue and a Shiner Bock if you're in the area.

Best brisket

By Eric S |

Hole in the wall authentic BBQ. Best brisket I've had. Good portion size. Baked beans were delicious.

Make friends with people in line.

By ppirtle2016 |

I first went there years ago with some work associates and have been a fan for over 10 years. I no longer work in the area and don't live nearby but I try to make meetings and appointments near the area to drop in. In my opinion it has some of the best links in Houston. Excellent brisket and sides as well. It's very busy at lunchtime but well worth the wait. Looking forward to my next trip back.

The original is great this was a mess

By bubba65 |

The restaurant in Luling is wonderful, possibly the gold standard for Texas brisket. In contract, the restaurant in Houston is a mess. The brisket was dry and overcooked, the ribs were ok. This seemed to be more of a local watering hole. Try any other BBQ place in Houston. Should be better, cannot be worse. Skip .

BBQ Average

By Rodney G |

I drove all the way from the North side to try this "Luling City Market BBQ". I was highly disappointed. The ribs tasted like gas and the sausage was dry and old with poor texture. After having been out to the real Luling BBQ recently, I was highly disappointed. Also, the prices are something I can't explain. A half pound of ribs, one link of sausage, two sides, and a drink = $30? Wow!

Great bar-b-que

By Robin W |

My boyfriend & I drove from San Antonio to try the famous Luling bar-b-que. It was worth the drive even if the weather was hot.

Not kosher!

By Mark N |

I should have known! Went with a couple of Israeli work colleagues, like me they had heard of Texan Rib Shacks. Both were looking forward to Beef Ribs, I was looking forward to pork loin.I wasn't disappointed but my colleagues were, especially as the restaurant had no chicken (run out) and the sausages of different inconsistencies all had pork products. No problem though - the salad bar was excellent. Food is sold by the ounce, so the more you put on your plate the more you pay. Bar tender (Mary) was highly entertaining and a great selection of beers. Worth going for an authentic experience. Priced well, accommodation basic, but if it's well cooked food that you want I would thoroughly recommend it.

BBQ food

By Matthew M |

Walked here from The Westin Galleria Hotel, the walk was not ideal with footpaths/sidewalks missing due to road works which was not ideal! Anyhow, the place itself is great. You get your food at a counter and drinks from the bar separately. There is a set meal where you get two sides and a half pound of meat. Extra meat is just added to the cost. I essentially got one rib, one slice of brisket and half a sausage (aka link) within the half pound, but I was hungry so got an extra rib and slice of brisket. It was all very nice. The in house bbq sauce was great. Well worth the trip out from the hotel but a taxi would of been safer than walking, which is unfortunate as it was really nearby.

Brisket Heaven

By tomod526 |

The best brisket I've had in Texas. The ribs were amazing, add some sauce that's sitting on every table, and they are perfect. We didn't order any sides - we didn't go there for the potato salad, coleslaw, or pintos. Will stop in every time I'm in Houston.

Waste of time, money and calories

By losvegas14 |

Though we do not live in Houston, we spend several months here, and look to experience as much good BBQ as possible. Luling was NOT one of the good experiences. The food was mediocre at best; dry brisket, super-fatty ribs. There was no sauce, but bottles on the table that were neither labeled nor clean. The ambiance was dark and dank, and I suppose if you wanted nothing more than to sit at the bar and drink, it might suffice, but in terms of looking for good food and a friendly face, this was not the place. We had called to double check thier hours prior to arriving, and they said they were open until 9. At 8:30, while we were finishing our meal, the first and only person who said even a word to us, came to the table to say they were closing soon, and obviously wanted us to make our exit. Not only would I not go there ever again, I strongly recommend not going. When there are places like Gatlin's, with great BBQ not too far away, skip this one.

Top Quality 'Cue

By 21Bear21 |

This is one of the top five barbecue meals I have had in Texas. What I love is that they open at 7:00 a.m. so it's a great place to pick up a little brisket for a unique breakfast taco. Each time I have been I have loved the brisket. It has a great smoke flavor, and the pitmaster does a great job of trimming just the right amount of fat off before smoking. It leaves a juicy meat, but doesn't give you the "roast" taste of others. They also do a good job of cooking it to the right consistency (it bends but doesn't fall apart). My favorite item are the ribs. They are meaty and extremely flavorful. They also don't give you the ends of a rack or the wimpy ribs like other places. Nothing but the best. Sausage is good, sides are good too. I usually don't eat sauce with the best brisket, but their mustard-based sauce is just too good. I sometimes put too much on and drown the brisket, but it is that good. I bought a bottle last time and have been using it on a variety of items with my home cooking. I could drink the stuff. Definitely enhances the meat. In all, this is one of the best places in Texas, thus the world. P.S. Strike up a conversation with Joe, the pitmaster. He is an interesting man and a real pleasant fellow.

Our Favorite

By TAMAN1951 |

BBQ done right. Brisket was juicy and lean. Nice jalapeño sausage with perfect heat. Awesome ribs. Tender with a nice bite. All have great smoke. Maybe this why they have been here over 30 years. Super service. Curtis sees to that. A little pricy but worth it to me.

Among the best BBQ I've had!

By textrav58 |

I wandered into this place and was thrilled to find an outstanding sliced beef sandwich and delicious slaw. There's lots of BBQ places in town, but this one is worth the visit. And loved the sauce at the table--more like a Carolina sauce. Yum! As you can tell, I was so enthralled with the food I didn't even think to take a pic before I finished!

Brisket Sandwich

By Tony the RVer |

A nice little hole in the wall BBQ spot. The brisket sandwich is VERY good, so surprised. Beware of the alacart prices. I like the TVs on NFL Sunday. See our youtube channel Coolest Life.

Best BBQ in Houston

By edpresnall |

Was one of the first to enter in 1981 when they opened their doors. Go back every time I get back to Texas! best brisket & sides! I always have a few jars of their BBQ rub in my cabinet for my smoker!

Good BBQ

By kepokomemolo |

If you live in the area it is a good alternative to Goode BBQ Company at kyrbi. For me it's very similar. Good smoke flavour, tender ribs etc. The brisket is more juicy at Goode.

Yumm!

By sailinghomesoon |

Excellent cafeteria style Texas barbecue! Husband got the brisket sandwich with potato salad and I got the spicy smoked sausage. We shared pickled jalapeños and also bread and butter pickles. Their sauce is great too!

excellent beef briskets

By luxvoyager |

don't miss this BBQ joint when you're in Houston, the briskets are amazingly good

Great Food

By Laurel F |

Went for the sausage and they didn't disappoint. The owner used to own Houston Barbecue. They open at 11am. We arrived at about 10:45 and there was already someone ahead of us. Get there early.

Good BBQ

By Allie S |

Good BBQ - cafeteria style. The brisket is to die for!! So tender and flavorful. Also loved the fall of the bone ribs. The coleslaw and beans were good, but nothing extraordinary. The service was good.

Seriously good barbecue

By jayo0556 |

Very good barbecue. A little on the pricey side but worth the money. Try the sausage rings. Some of the best sausage in town. One thing to keep in mind is they are not connected to City Market in Luling.

Best Loose Cut Brisket Anywhere!

By John F |

As I travel in Texas I always am looking for Brisket and noting the differences between them. I've been to the "Mecca" of Texas BBQ, Lockhart. Black's and especially Smitty's are excellent. But NO ONE has a better Brisket than Luling's. The Loose Cut (back home we call it the Deckle or Point) I've had at Luling's City Market in Houston is some of the best meat you will have ANYWHERE!! They distinguish there smoke by only using Oak. It works! Most restaurants will randomly cut their loose cut and set it on your butcher paper (the best BBQs in Texas always seem to avoid plates). I've been in Houston for almost two months now while receiving treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. I've tried a number of BBQ restaurants. Only Luling's has taken the time to trim some of the fat from the Loose Cut to give you the juiciest most delicious brisket you'll ever have! Places like Cooper's in Llano will push their Dipping sauce on the flat end to avoid the natural drying that begins to take place soon after the Brisket is done. Some stay away from the Loose Cut because of the extra fat on that end. No worry at Luling's. Their carvers (I've been there three times now and have taken my family there when they visited me) will cut it to order beautifully (it's still deckle, so expect some fat). Luling's sauce is also very special. Has a mustard base but not as strong as some of the Georgia BBQs. They have a full bar and everyone is very friendly. Their homemade pecan pie is served in small aluminum plates and is also great. Their ribs are also excellent, but while I eat my brisket their without any sauce, I prefer their sauce on my ribs. They are not "fall off the bone" type, but the natural, and very common in East Texas, the gentle pull off the bone type. Please understand that the flat end Brisket here is also excellent, but if you want to have a brisket like none you've ever had, try the Loose Cut. Their Bark (outside crust) is so very tasty yet not especially salty as I've found in a number of other's. I've been there at lunch and dinner time and the brisket is consistently fantastic. Do yourself a favor and go to Luling's City Market. No big advertising and long lines. Just great BBQ! PS Do yourself a favor and walk next door to the Bayou Kitchen & Pasta restaurant for a wonderful peach or blueberry bread pudding for an extra dessert. My wife insists Luling's should be our last eating experience before we leave Houston.

Such great bbq a little over priced

By sammijb816 |

This place is not a typical restaurant style. It is more like cafeteria style you get a tray and tell them what you want. I tried the brisket, link, and pork ribs. The links were sooooo amazing and I have never been a sausage person before but these were freaking amazing. Next time I go back I will defiantly just get the links. Defiantly a little pricey and not the best value.

Great BBQ!

By Derik M |

Luling City Market is some of the best bbq I've had. It's of the beaten path but worth the trip. Their sauce is amazing!

BBQ at its best.

By WesleyMCPA |

This is favorite BBQ stop in Houston. The sauce is incredible. They do the brisket, ribs and sausage the best anywhere. Chicken is ok, slaw is ok. Nice atmosphere. Feels like a BBQ restaurant should. Service is counter service, and is quick! They move you through and then take care of you after you are seated. If it's your first time, start with the brisket. One of the best you will ever eat!

Best Bar B Que in the World!!!!!!!!!!

By JeanieHoustonTexas |

I've lived Texas most of my 40+ years and have eaten ALOT of Bar B Que. This is by far the BEST anywhere!!!!!. Bring CASH because they do not accept credit cards. They do have an ATM inside. You walk in and walk directly to the back room which is actually the smoke room. You order your meat (Links, ribs, brisket) by the pound. They throw it on butcher paper, weigh it and you pay and walk out of this room smelling like the best bar b que in the world. If you want sides or drinks, you go to the front counter to order and pay for them. They also have the plastic ware up there. You eat on the butcher paper, not plates here. If you want bar b que sauce look for the bottle that use to hold hot sauce, because they have recycled them to hold the wonderful bar b que sauce. It is more of a vinegar base than tomatoe base sauce. Of course you can take order home too and would recommend it. Eat your full and take home as much as you can afford! The ribs are my personal favorite, the meat falls off the bone. The brisket has the most wonderful flavor and I think no bar b que sauce is needed. Just enjoy. You are not going for atmosphere, you are going for the best food!!!!!

Wonderful barbeque, perfect sauce, and regulars at the bar

By gilda-bebe |

I live in a neighborhood right by this restaurant, but drove past it for 10 years until somebody else told me how good it was. They were right! Now that I've mended my foolish ways, we go often for brisket and ribs. Brisket for us, ribs for our cockatoo, who is a big fan. It tends to be smoky inside, so if you have breathing issues, you might prefer to-go dining, as we generally do. When I go in to pick up the BBQ, I often see people sitting at the bar who appear to be regulars. It seems to be a hangout for locals, although I'm a local and I've never recognized any of the "locals" I see there. Be sure to get plenty of their deeelicious BBQ sauce if you pick up a to-go order.

Great Q

By P S |

Decided to try something besides Goode Company BBQ while in Houston. This was a good decision. Lulling was similar in style and choice of meats, but had fewer sides selections, and barbecue was different enough to make the decision a good one. Vinegar based sauce was excellent. Tried brisket (flavorful and moist) and turkey (also very flavorful). Would still give it to Goode Co. for their potato salad, but this was a very close 2nd place. I had to pay 25 cents for a pickle spear. Really? We got ribs and chicken "To Go" because we couldn't try it all for lunch. Now we can alternate while visiting in Houston.

We wanted something Texas...and I think we got it!

By Travel_guy_opinion |

I was told by our hotel that they had the best BEEF ribs in Houston. In fact, when we went there, they told us that they NEVER had beef ribs, and so we had to choose something else. I chose their pork ribs and they were "fall off the bone" delicious! It looks like the restaurant is in a dubious area, but the outside looks like a small texas roadside bar. Give it a try! The ribs were terrific.

The sausage was the stand out, brisket reasonable

By MontgomeryBrewster |

Brisket is always tasty but after a week in Houston I'd tried better (and worse). But the sausage here was sublime. So flavoursome. Also a nice bar to sit at and enjoy a beer with a friendly local crowd. I'd go back, even for the brisket!

Very good BBQ Brisket Sandwiches

By Tom W |

A client of mine likes to meet here for lunch. We always enjoy it. Lulings makes a good BBQ Brisket Sandwich. There give you plenty of tasty beef and the sauce is at your table. I like my brisket lean, so I remembered to make a special request. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food they provide. Lulings is located at Richmond and 610. Right now, there is a lot of construction in the Galleria area. Plan for extra time to get there.

Real BBQ in Houston

By fred918 |

Having eaten in a lot of BBQ places in Houston, I have found Luling City market in Houston as good as the original in Luling Texas.. You must try.

Disappointing visit

By TAMAN1951 |

We were there for dinner so not too late. Brisket was pretty dry and lacked good smoke flavor. Sausage was dry as well, almost like leftovers from earlier in the week. Ribs were OK. Nice beans but not really the reason we came. We have been loyal customers for 32 years but may have to venture out. Counter service is adequate but not as good as Curtis. I found the cost to be on the high side.

Cozy environment with a nice small neighborhood like bar area

By Tracy H |

Really like the venue; cozy. Walk up order and get your food. Ordered the brisket. It’s drier than KC. No bbq sauce but tangy sauces which were good. Their potatoe salad was the best! They have mini pecan pies. Perfect size and. Good

Almost as good as the original

By Nick B |

It is a copy of the original city market BBQ in Luling Texas and is pretty decent for BBQ within he city limits so would say yes it is a good place but it doesn't stand up to the original of course for that you need to drive 2.5 hours!

Slipping into Darkness

By Kirk W |

When I left Houston 20+ years ago, this is one of the places I missed the most. The best sausage in Texas, and very good brisket. Not so anymore. The brisket was just average and the sausage lacked the crisp skin and rough texture of its predecessor. Go to City Market in Lulling, instead. (They are not technically related, I was told.)

Deep smoke

By Martin L |

Had Ribs, Brisket and Sausage and a side of slaw. The Ribs and Brisket are top shelf with a great smoke ring and flavor. I found the sausage to be lacking in texture and taste. They could take a lesson here from Luie Mueller in Taylor Texas.Long line started noon so get there a little early

Top drawer Chopped Beef Sandwich!

By Shuttrrbug |

Busy day of maneuvering around the Galleria shopping left us starving. Have not been to Luling City Market in Houston, only the one in Lullng. Pleasantly surprised, as the quality is very good. We both had a chopped beef sandwich. Really lean with huge flavor. Cole slaw excellent as well. Friendly staff. Hidden off Richmond near the Loop. We will return. Enjoy!

Good alternative with seating

By evansmcgowan |

We (my parents, grandparents and I) went to Gratlin's but there was a line out the door and we didn't want to wait (no surprise there being 12:30pm on a Saturday). We went to Luling where we could sit inside and not wait in line. It was delicious. I haven't eaten at Gratlin so I can't compare, but we were very satisfied with the BBQ at Luling, especially the briscuit.

Fall apart tender brisket

By Sugarkisses519 |

Wow! The brisket was so delicious! I didn't put any BBQ sauce on it! So tender! I also had their wonderful potato salad. Nice folks too!

No sauce needed

By Darren D |

While in Houston for a conference, I decided to look up BBQ places not far from the Galleria. Luling was a short drive from the Galleria, even at 5pm. On my way in to the restaurant, I met a customer who eats there regularly. He informed me that everything was excellent. I followed behind him (orders are placed at the front counter) and ordered brisket and ribs. Both meats were excellent! There was no need for sauce, salt, or any seasoning because it was perfectly seasoned and very juicy. I tried the BBQ sauce, but I didn't like it very much. It has too much mustard in it for my taste. Then again, there was no need for the sauce. This was some of the best Q I've had.

Texas Treat in the shadow of Galleria

By Oldlady5010 |

Hankering for real Texas barbecue without the pretense? Go in the evening. (Long lines for weekday lunch). Brisket, ribs, sausage served on butcher paper (Yes, they have other meat.). Choice of potato salad, beans, cole slaw for sides. (Cheese, homemade pickles). Wonderful sauce. Now featuring Texas root beer bottled in Dublin, Texas, with cane sugar--perfect pairing. Friendly bar for those who imbibe.

This is the real deal for BBQ

By bbrs074 |

OMG do you like BBQ? Run, don't walk, to this joint. You go into the smoke house to order your meat. It's a really simple menu...brisket, ribs or sausage. That's it. Then go grab some tater salad and a Big Red and you're in BBQ nirvana :) If you don't try this place your life just got diminished significantly.

No frills, just good ole BBQ

By ghosthorse73 |

First stopped here on way to meeting. Now plan my travel to Austin via Luling so i can eat here. Cash only establishment. Quaint interior but clean...they dont need anything fancy, their BBQ speaks for itself. Order meats towards back, drinks/sides up front. Brisket tender, toasty bark, honeycomb patterned meat, very moist, prefer no sauce. Pork ribs not overcooked, tender off the bone bites, prefer no sauce. Sausage good but a bit too large grained for me. Meat comes on butcher paper (i prefer this to being served on plates). I try to go after 1pm since it gets busy during lunch. Love to see all the people that come in and enjoy the food/friendly atmosphere. Homeade potato salad good. Like to get slice of cheese and cold Big Red. BBQ sauce at tables. Don't expect to be waited on at your table. Since 1st visit I've taken my family here while traveling to Austin. Recommend to family and friends.

BBQ Heaven!!!

By Richard K |

Had a Brisket meal and It was mouthwatering! The BBQ sauce was not hot nor did it have a vinegar taste as many do. Its like a small bar and a restaurant in one. Not much to look at from the outside, but the food, WOW.

Lifetime BBQ eater....

By JoyRidesTexas |

So being a lifetime Central Texas BBQ eater, I thought Luling City Market was just ok. The best thing there was the sausage. The grind was just right and the flavor was good. The brisket had a pretty decent flavor, though it was tough. The sauce was awful. It was sweet and mild, come on...this is Texas. The service was and friendliness of the staff was not true to Texas. I thank Prause's in La Grange for setting the bar on how I judge service and friendliness, as well as, serving up great BBQ.

The sauce is delicious

By Yael47 |

I found this place around the galleria, and it is a small but great place. I had the brisket sandwhich which the sauce made everything taste delicious!! My coworker also loved the sauce. We sat at the bar and just chit chat the night away with the bartender. The sides are quite simple just beans and mashed potatoes they lacked a little flavor .The sauce made everything taste delicious.

Central Texas Barbecue

By BevoBurn96 |

Honest, well smoked Q. Mustard base and the sauce is heavy vinegar with spice. Cafeteria style service. Line out the door at lunchtime.

Decent BBQ

By TND_Love_Travel |

Place could use some upgrading on the inside, maybe move the soda fountain to the end of the order counter instead of the beginning. Lots of people in line blocking access to get a refill. I had the brisket and ribs and my wife had a BBQ sandwich, food was good but not so good that I would purposefully make another trip. The sauce on the tables is very good. The staff was very friendly.

Ripped Off The Name and the BBQ is Not good At All

By |

This place BLATANTLY ripped off the good name of City Market in Luling for one reason, to fool their customers into thinking this "fake old timey jojnt" was somehow related to one oif the Top 3 BBQ joints in Texas. Folks in Houston that know good BBQ never have set foot inside the place because of this. I was in town a few weeks abck and happened to be in the neighborhood, so I dropped by to give them a chance. The brisket was tough and dry, the sausage was greasy with no texture and looked like H-E-B grocery store brand and the ribs were fatty as heck and the pinto beans were so salty I could not eat them. Needless to say I was not surprised. Its a shame that places like this are allowed to rip off other businesses good names and they sell below avg. food.

Great BBQ

By TAMAN1951 |

Quality seems to have returned with Curtis. Have not been in awhile but glad we came back. Brisket had great smoke and so tender. Sausage it great flavor and texture. Ribs had the perfect bite. Limited sides but flavor is a nice accompaniment. Counter service. A little pricey.

Good barbecue, sides just okay

By L A D |

Stopped by this place late and had dinner. Meats were all very good, but the sides, ie, cole slaw, pinto beans, etc. were just okay. Spicy pickles were very good

Obligated place for meat lovers

By Jorge L |

Superb place for BBQ, I think the best I have ever had. Sorry, can't write anymore, I have magnificent ribs looking at me...

Good BBQ, but overpriced

By Gene T |

Luling's BBQ is above-average BBQ. Their sauce is what makes their meats so good--a mustard-based, tangy sauce that goes well with every meat. At one point 10-15 years ago, Luling was the best BBQ in town, but they simply haven't kept up with many of the newcomers, and they're pricing their food as though they're still the best in town. It's still decent, but many others have surpassed it.

Authenic Texas BBQ

By Dennis S |

Go to Luling City Market Real Texas Bar-B-Que with a big appetite so that you do not have to chose between the ribs (melt in your mouth good), the brisket (over the top in flavor) and the smoked turkey. Try it all and you will see that this is the real thing.

A total hole in the wall!

By SpartaBrian |

Arrived here hungry after a day of air travel. This is your typical hole in the wall restaurant. A bar greets you in the front and even at 3pm on a Sunday there was a decent crowd. The BBQ is served from a counter, meaning no table service. Food is sold by the pound which allows for a good amount of mixing and matching of meats at the same price. I had the ribs and sausage. Both were quite good although the temperature could have been hotter. Without table service I was then tasked with walking up to the bar to grab a cold Shiner to go with my meal. So while you won't get a pampering here you will be treated to some decent food. The prices seemed a bit high for being in Texas, but I could be wrong. I will come back here should I ever get back to this area.

Good BBQ

By TAMAN1951 |

Ribs were cooked perfectly. Brisket had nice bark and nice oak smoke flavor. Chicken was nice and juicy. Links were nice as well. Sides not so special. Service is cafeteria style. Prices are high.

The best!

By Dixie C |

Omg this was soooo good! The best bbq I’ve ever had!! The staff was friendly and the place was clean and the food was so good. And the prices were really reasonable too

Not like original in Luling TX

By karen v v |

I'm originally from Luling but live close to Houston. I got the brisket and sausage and was disappointed how chewy the brisket was and the sausage was so smokey. The prices are so much more than what I pay in Luling. Will only get my BBQ from Luling City Market in Luling TX.

THE MEAT WAS TOO DRY THIS VISIT

By Skip59716 |

My wife and I ate here on a Saturday at lunch time. The brisket was dry as was the link sausage. I've eaten a lot of BBQ here over the years but seldom on Saturday. I think the meat was dry because it was cooked Friday. Other that the dryness issue, it was just as good as it has always been. The flavor is next to none and the sauce is one I have always liked. I used to eat at the original in Luling but the links always had too much fat in them. The original owner in Houston originally worked at City Market in Luling. I also like their potato salad with pickle relish on it.

Used to be the best

By TAMAN1951 |

Now it has become average. Chicken and brisket had good flavor but on the dry side. Ribs were much better. Sausage is good but crumbley. OK on the sides but nothing special. Nice classic BBQ ambience. Sauce is still the best.

Good Brisket and Ribs

By stefan2025 |

Have been here a couple of times. Good Brisket and Ribs, also try the potato salat. Next time I am in Houston, I will eat there again.

CITY MARKET ROCKS!

By AEBBrenham |

City Market Rocks! I am a BBQ aficionado.I have written about it. I have sampled all of the North American styles--Chicago, Memphis, Kansas City, Virginia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Caribbean, and Texas (with at least four different styles of Central Texas, Eastern Texas, Northern Texas, and Southern Texas), and others.. And, I have sampled many BBQ styles from around the world in my travels. For my personal preference, Texas is the Nexus! Where the Rubs, cooking time, wood, and quality of the meat is king. Sauce is a nice accompaniment, but not required. With that being said, I have my personal favorites for the past 30 years. Just revisited a former favorite City Market in Luling, that I had not visited in a few years (thanks Gary and Shari for reminding me) and it still ranks as one if the best-- City Market in Luling. The best quality meat, great Balance on the Rub. The final product is sweet and moist, with just the right amount of char, and a great finish. Sides--Beans, Slaw, etc. are great and portions large. Plus the ambiance is TEXAS BBQ at its best. Cheers for the New Year!

Good BBQ

By dtvogen |

We asked around for the best BBQ in town and were pointed to Luling. Four of us created our own sample platter, ordering some of about everything. The ribs were awesome, as were the brisket and sausage. Good sauces and good sides. Really casual, just good eats, and a friendly bartender.

Must go in Houston

By Renata B |

If you are looking for the Texas way to make barbecue, you have to go to Luling! There is no plates. You will eat the meat in a piece of paper! The brisquet is my favorite. Try with the cole slaw and the potatoes salad. And of course, with a very cold beer!

Great Brisket

By MississippiBobcat |

I had read about several BBQ places in Houston and we decided to try Lulings. Simply the best brisket I've ever had.It was moist, flavorful and they gave you a lot on a sandwich. Definitely will be back.

BEST BAR

By The MLMCowgirl |

BEST BAR, GREAT BBQ...What more is there to life? :) Fun place, everyone should go and check it out.

Good flavor but on the dry side

By cnjones |

This is the second time I have eaten here. The first time I got the ribs. They were good, but very dry. This time I got the brisket. Same story. Very dry. The sauce is tasty, but I prefer not to have to use sauce.

Great BBQ Beef and Sausage

By CriticalChris |

Luling City Market is great. I love their sliced beef and link sausage. The pork ribs are very good and the BBQ chicken is a real deal. One of the calling cards to me is their BBQ sauce which is sitting on the table in Tabasco bottles. It's a very thin sauce but has a wonderful flavor. They do offer sides; cole slaw, potato salad, beans, and some other odds and ends. They have pecan pie also. You get in a lunch line with a tray, tell the Block Man what you want, he cuts it and weighs it and then you pay the cashier. Not fancy but they do have a full bar and a big TV. It's meat...unlike other BBQ restaurants that serve platters and all that stuff. Luling is meat, weighed and served on paper...not paper plates but butcher paper. If you want a plate you'll have to bring your own!

Not the real Texas BBQ you expect

By John Q |

My wife & I stopped today for some BBQ. We've eaten there in the past and the BBQ was always great. Well not no more. It's not what you would expect. We had BBQ chip beef sandwiches and at best were average. I would suggest if you are hungry for BBQ go somewhere else. The prices are high at that. Not worth the money you pay.

Best BBQ in Houston Inner Loop

By Adel G |

If you love tender moist brisket, this is your place. I heard a lot talking about Goode BBQ in West U. But to be honest, their brisket is tooo dry for me. I always recommend Luling's City. Fair notice, they don't serve Memphis type BBQ sauce (Dark/Sweet). their sauce , nevertheless is amazing.

Texas BBQ

By bostonsig |

What else needs to be said - if you want good Texas BBQ this is one of those places to visit. We had a table of 8 who had a little of everything on the menu and really had a great meal all around. The beef brisket was amazing.

Better Than Average

By 1Longhorns |

Went there with big expectations. I have never been here before. I grew up on Lockhart BBQ. It was a Saturday afternoon and it was PACKED. Cash Only. The line was long but moved fairly quickly. Kind of a weird setup. You get in line to order your meats. There is a room within the restaurant that you order your meat. So I was in the restaurant but standing outside the glass door waiting for the next available counter. There are only two counters. Big sign says don't leave the door open so I have to look in thru the glass door waiting. Ok, my turn. My wife and I have never been here so I order two sausage links (rings), two ribs and two slices of brisket. $12. It came with several slices of bread and half a sleeve of crackers. All served on butcher paper. At another area of the restaurant is the counter to get drinks and beans. Not sure if they have potato salad. We just got tea. No utensils other than a plastic knife for us. Ribs for me we a little on the dry side. Wife loved her's. Brisket a little dry and not too tender. It was ok, wife liked it. Sausage was good. We both like the sausage. They have some type of sauce on all of the tables and it helped with the brisket. This is not your typical BBQ sauce. Bottom line, I would go back but lower my expectations. Oh, when I was in line the guy behind me said he hoped it was a good day. I asked what he meant and he said the guys making the BBQ have good days and bad days when it came to the cooking and flavor. I would guess our day was a bad day because I have heard great things about this place but it was a bit disappointing.

Just ok bbq

By TMP826 |

Luling City Market in Houston offers good-enough bbq for those looking for a bbq fix. I ordered the brisket, ribs, and sausage. By far, the ribs were the best item on my plate; they were tender, good smoke flavor, and well-seasoned, with no bbq sauce needed. The bbq sauce was good, reflecting a nice blend of sweetness and vinegary savoryness. All in all, I expected more based on the original in Luling, TX. What I got was good enough, but not great bbq.

Best brisket

By Helnan |

This briskets is awesome! With coleslaw and some homemade pickles - and the place is so authentic! I would have never gone in if it was not for a business dinner some years ago! Since then I recommend this place to everybody, and everyone came back with positive feedback :-)

Texas BBQ redemption

By AlexLine1 |

Disclaimer: this is written by a NJ BBQ snob that cooks Memphis style at home. Had a couple of disappointing Texas BBQ meals before this place and was about to give up on Texas as a worthy BBQ place. Luling changed all that. The ribs and brisket were excellent - juicy and tasty with some good smoke. The chicken was pretty good too. Liked it so much, came back the next night for a bit more. Tried the sausage, ribs and brisket again. Sausage was the best I've has in TX. This time the ribs and brisket were still great, but a little drier than I'd like. Definitely worth a visit, as long as you're ready to get your food on a cafeteria tray with butcher paper instead of a plate. Certainly not fancy, but oh, so good.

Luling City Market has the best BBQ - bar none..and they're just down the street from me! Those that like Goode Co...

By Travelin_GalHouston |

Luling City Market has the best BBQ - bar none..and they're just down the street from me! Those that like Goode Co., haven't eaten at Luling. Try the brisket, sausage links, potato salad and pinto beans. They'll bag it up to go (we rarely eat in), along with their special tangy sauce and slices of that white bread that sticks to the top of your mouth, to sop it up in. No one does BBQ better!

Disappointed

By Kay M |

Hadn't been in several years and never for dinner. The brisquet was dry and not juicy as I remember it. Cole slaw was good. Wanted some wine and I know it is a BBQ place, but only 1 red wine selection and not good at that!

Good Meats!

By Gayle E |

Good meat all around. Sausage, beef, ribs and turkey were all tasty. The bar-b-q sauce is thin and not typical Texas sauce. The meal over all is great and the sides were good. The Cole slaw, beans and potato salad. The onions, pickles and sauce are all help yourself. We would go back. Very limited seating!

Friendly Staff, Good BBQ

By chinadad96 |

Luling BBQ does not look like much, but the BBQ is tasty and the staff is very friendly. I went in about 7 pm last time, past the rush.. Got my Brisket and sides and sat at the bar. Chatted with other folks and the bartender. All in all, a fine night.

My Colleague Said Best Sausage Ever Tasted

By Kevin W |

I took a work colleague to Luling. He's from the Midwest and was in town for business. He immediately loved the vibe in the restaurant. I had an excellent turkey and sausage combo with potato salad. He had brisket and sausage and while eating it told me that the sausage was the best he's ever had! Love this place.

Best BBQ

By Chun |

Everytime im in the states and Houston especially i have to visit. Best BBQ around and ths ribs and brisket are to die for, literally!

Absolutely love it!

By amelie |

Luling was recommended to us by a local friend. The briskets and pork ribs are very delicious. We don't even need the sauce because the flavor itself is so strong and mouth watering. Though we were a little lost on how to make the order at first, everything turned out perfect.

Worth a visit!!

By Jonathan M |

Briskit was great, ribs were great and sauce was just right!! Cafeteria style, no need to pay for stuff you don't want when all you want is some good BBQ.

Best sausage

By Mary H |

We have been eating here since it opened in the 80's and the quality has remained the same: excellent! They make their own link sausage which is tasty and lean and you can get spicy. They also offer brisket (delicious) ribs (the best anywhere), and chicken. Sides are limited to pinto beans, Cole slaw, or potato salad. Food is served on butcher paper. They also make the best barbque sauce, spicy not sweet. Get there at 11:00 when it opens because it fills up fast at lunchtime.

The best ribs anywhere!

By Loyed123 |

City Market Bar-B-Q is a must stop for Texas Bar-B-Q! Their ribs are always perfect! Their brisket is juicy and full of flavor. They make their own sausage and is some of the best that I have ever had. I highly recommend stoping for lunch or a early dinner, they close at 6:00 pm. They are also cash only.

Really good BBQ

By Bill |

I always visit Luling City Market when I'm in Houston. The brisket and beef sausage is really good. They didn't give me much bark on my brisket last time but it was still good. Staff is very friendly too.

Texas barbeque

By Naomi B |

Tender brisket that doesn't require any sauce for moisture or flavor. Sausages with crisp skins and peppery filling. I take my Yankee and European visitors here for a taste of authentic Texas barbeque.

This place has some great Q

By Brangwinjohn |

As a BBQ judge I have some experience- this place is fun , cheap and great food I drove 50 miles to bring back 10 pounds of brisket( by plane ). In talking with customers this is half way point from Houston to San Antonio and they always stop as I would if in Area .

Probably in the top 5 best BBQs in TX

By Sascha T |

Excellent ribs , excellent brisket . Good sausage and turkey , very good pulled pork . Unique experience , it is worth a trip while in Houston , in my view , only compares to Rudy´s for brisket and ribs . Easy location . Interesting hands on eating experience :-)

Excellent

By Ava W |

My husband and I have been making our way through the Texas Monthly top 50 BBQ list. This place did not disappoint. We got there at closing but the staff was more than willing to let us grab a brown bag of yummy meats to-go! We got the ribs and brisket. The ribs were moist and had really nice Smokey/sweet flavor. The brisket was juicy and well seasoned. Even my kiddos loved it. We forgot to grab bbq sauce but it didn’t bother us. The meat was perfect the way it came. I highly recommend this bbq joint! We will for sure be back and hopefully in time to sit down inside the restaurant 😉

The real deal

I really enjoy Texas BBQ. The smoke was just right. The ribs were perfect. If I had any disappointment, it was the links. A little too soft and dry.

Just your average BBQ

By LonestarGumby |

So unfortunately I missed out on my annual pilgrimage to San Antonio over Labor Day Weekend, and therefore on the delightful BBQ found in Lockhart or Luling Texas. A business client had recommended Luling City Market on Richmond Avenue in Houston, so I thought I’d give it a try. I arrived just after they opened at 11am on a weekday, so I was early enough to avoid the crowd and jammed parking lot for which this Galleria area eatery is known. So far so good….. Ordering is simple enough, you just grab a tray and some napkins by the soda machine and slide your tray along the track. The first option is the sides, and I opted for some cole slaw, which is usually a favorite. I purposefully ordered the ‘fatty brisket’, as this is where the juices are and generally more flavor. Add a couple of pork ribs and we are set to go; $21.95. Sadly what was served is Luling City Market BBQ in name only. The brisket only had a partial smoke ring, and even though I had ordered the fatty brisket, it was somewhat dry. Luckily the joint does have the authentic mustard-based BBQ sauce on each table. I can’t say what it is about Luling or Lockhart beef, but they must do something special to those beef steers. IDK what it is, but it definitely transfers to the meat they serve to their guests. This stuff on Richmond Avenue. ….. well let’s just say this is my first trip in 26 years of living in the Houston area….. and I’ll probably wait another 26 years for my next trip. I just wish it weren’t so difficult to get good authentic BBQ in the city. And how long is it until Labor Day 2017??

friendly atmosphere

Great bar, friendly customers and cold beer. The BBQ beef and sausage are delicious and the bbq sauce is dynamite stuff.

Wow great place

This is a great place to have some good barbecue in Houston. Prices are reasonable. Smoke sausage and brisket were really good !!!

It doesn't get better than this

By Greg W |

In my estimation this is the best barbecue restaurant in the country. The sausage is very unique, the sauce is outstanding, the ribs are great. Even the atmosphere, eating on butcher block paper, makes it a Texas experience. If you've never been here, it's a must. If you have, I know you'll be back.

Not as good as Hyped

Met a group here for dinner. I am from out of town and was told by the locals this was THE place for BBQ in Houston. Well the Brisket was good but lacked flavor of smoke. The sides were minimal. For me, just a miss all around.

Go West(!) young man/woman (138 miles on I-10) for REAL deal...

After seeing reviews I decided to take a chance. Though it may have been "close" to the original during initial start-up (when former City Market - from Luling) started tis place, this is NOT Luling sausage. I tried both sausage and brisket. The sausage ($4.65/link, really?). The sausage literally left a paste-like coating in mouth after each bite (like a damp saw dust, perhaps a filler?). Score: "0" (out of 5) The brisket was OK (read this to mean moist) but had no flavor. Not even a hint of pepper/salt/rub... Score: "2" (out of 5). Over the next few days I had the pleasure of tasting 1) REAL Luling City Market (Luling) sausage, and 2) the sausage at both Black's and Smitty's in Lockhart. Go to these places: City Market (Luling) Black's/Smitty's/Kreutz (all three are in Lockhart!) Have your own taste test and decide... but forget Houston's "Luling City Market" on Richmond...

Brisket Done to a Texas T

By YYC_Foodie |

Dropped by Luling City Market primarily for the brisket. This place does a great (Texas-style) job on bbq in general, but excels at brisket. Great pink smoke ring and a nice oaky flavour and smell. Some crunch to be had on the exterior as well. The ribs are not quite up-to-par; silverski left on the backs always bothers me since it prevents smoke absorption. Plus the ribs are "confused" - partly dry and partly wet. As I prefer dry style, these did not live up to the brisket. The side of beans was sadly small for the cost - I mean beans are cheap, right? Decent but overcooked. And what is with a mustard based sauce in Texas? Belongs in the Carolinas even if it was pretty good. Since this is cafeteria-style, service is whatever they bark at you so don't expect a romantic spot Bottom line on the food: brisket to win! (But find a better place for ribs)

Inner City BBQ Joint

When you get near the Galleria, its the only true BBQ place anywhere close by. Good BBQ, mediocre ambiance.

First Time

Just OK. Brisket was overly greasy, beans lacked flavor as dis potato salad. I won't return. I still want to try the original restaurant in Luling, which is always packed.

This ought to be No 1 !

This is a BBQ afficionado place. The meat is served on paper. The atmosphere is patriotic and sports bar like. BUT the BBQ brisket is GRREAAAAATT! I recommend the top of the brisket. That is the best. The unique BBQ sauce is also sold by the bottle. It is different than other places. Also top drawer is the link sausage and ribs. There is usually a line but it moves quickly. The hosts are friendly and personable, and the service is the way you would expect at a BBQ place. I mean it in a good way! Enjoy!

BBQ at its best

By dixiedog2015 |

BBQ was great and not much to look at on the outside but warm and inviting inside and food was great and people were accommodating.

Authentic barbecue.

When I walked in the door of this unassuming establishment I weld that it was absolutely, genuinely about the food and great barbecued brisket, ribs and chicken. The meat was cooked beautifully and is sold by the pound. No need for plates here, the meat served on butcher's paper does the trick. The flavour of the brisket was excellent, as were the accompanying dishes of coleslaw and pickles. Authentic stuff, worthy of future visits.

CUSTOMER SERVICE?????

By eldude1010 |

Went today and ordered $40 of Q and the "manager" was only going to give me a small amount of sauce. When I asked for twice the amount of sauce he charged me $3.50, unbelievable. I asked if I ordered a sandwich for $6 and ate that in the dining room could I have all the sauce that I wanted since it is provided on every table and he said yes. Needless to say I would not pay the extra $ and they lost a 25+ year customer over $3.50. Seeing that the dining room was pretty much empty, hard to fathom that they would want to lose any customer.

Worth the wait!

By MrsFord30 |

The line almost outside the door @ 2:00 pm in the afternoon was a sign that their food must be really good! We waited about 1/2 hour. We'd never been there before and were a little confused on how ordering worked. We had plenty of time to figure it out. Make sure you take cash b/c it's cash only. We got ours to go and went and ate down the street at s public park. The seating was limited and was very hot inside the restaurant. We will definitely go back. Food was so good! Very reasonable and staff really has it together!

fabulous texas bbq

By glschles |

the brisket is terrific. available by the slice. the smoked ribs are wonderful. good potato salad also. none of the meats are saused. there is great sauce to use as you see fit.

Overrated.

This place gets you with its atmosphere. It is classic and old timey and you have to go into a smoke filled room to buy some barbecue that you can take back to your table on a piece of butcher paper. After you sit down and begin eating, you’ll notice that the atmosphere is great, but the food is just average. The brisket is okay, the sausage is not very good, and the ribs are subpar. The sauce is quite good. If you want to go to a place for the atmosphere and a average-below average piece of meat covered in some pretty good sauce, then try City Market. But if you want great barbecue there are better places to go. Try Black’s or the Salt Lick.

Great Bar-B-Que

By Arthur E |

There Bar-B-Que can match any in Houston. They have a very unique sauce that has a strange color, not red more orange. It taste grate. They have great sausage and not a bad price.
