Lovely rooftop restaurant

By Magsuga |

Lumi is an adorable rooftop restaurant with great sushi! We got lucky enough to sit at a table with a fire in the middle. It was so cozy but our iced water warmed quickly. I did not expect to like the sushi pizza as much as I did! The rolls were greats and change periodically. My waiter recommended a soft shell crab roll (which understandably is a specific taste) but it was not my favorite. My coworker ordered steak and ate every last bite!! They were able to accommodate for vegan and allergies which was great!

Lipstick on a pig

We are a group of 25-40 year old foodies from the U.S. and Italy. We all have dined at over fifteen Michelin star restaurants, including 4 two stars and one three stars. Thankfully, money is not a problem, and we all agree that even a lot of money for a memorable culinary experience is most definitely well spent. However, unfortunately this is an example of a restaurant that is 6 at best, and thinks they are worth a 10. We went in 5 for a work-related dinner, excited to try the best the restaurant had to offer. The ambience was intriguing and the vibe nice, but the elevator to the rooftop was slow and we had to check in twice (downstairs and upstairs). Not a problem, if it wasn’t that the second time they couldn’t find our reservation, and had to make sure we were actually on the list. They end up sitting us outside in a nice table, with our server trying their best to be as nice and responsive as possible. So far, so good, with minor, negligible hiccups. We all ordered a chef’s menu with drink pairing. Unfortunately, the whole dinner took around 4h, and it got chilly pretty fast, though the overhead heating wouldn’t work just on top of our table. Instead of telling us straight, they pretended they forgot to do it for three times, and at the fourth time we explicitly called them out and they admitted it wouldn’t work. Now to the actual dinner. We open with the chef’s highlight, a thinly sliced mini focaccia with on top a slice of tuna with truffle olive oil and jalapeño - all served on a cheap, colored light blinking, plastic disc (non-edible). While good, you could tell they are trying real hard and attention to details was obviously scarce, as gleaned from the chef’s name printed on low res ink on top of the paper disc separating the plastic apparatus from the mini-pizza (3 inch diameter?) sitting on top. From there, the whole dinner was an uphill battle, with pairing either missing or randomly showing up either before, after the paired dish, or - at least twice out of the 7 courses - not at all. The 7 courses barely fill you up - which is kind of concerning giving the final bill of over 1200$ (in 5, pre-tip). Overall, the quality was “meh” at best. The steak was beyond “well done”, a crime against that poor bovine that gave their life to be shamefully mistreated on the grill. The branzino was good, but not exceptional. The mini salad was randomly sitting on top of a gallon of tasteless sour cream/crème fraiche - had better salad at the work canteen. The nigiri plate was meh. Had way better sushi in landlocked regions of this country, which is a shame giving the seafood scene in San Diego and the 5 min walking distance from the marina. Overall, you can put a lipstick on a pig, and you can even go to bed with it, but when you wake up in the morning you feel like you have done something wrong/against your sober will, which is pretty much how the whole table feels this morning on the day after…

Good but could be better.

Good food. Good service. Very stingy on the amount of alcohol in their cocktails. So after one cocktail, I ordered Grey Goose on the rocks. It contained maybe 1 ounce of Vodka. With the prices they charge, they don’t have to be so stingy.

Amazing experience with excellent food

Excellent all around. Top notch service and the best most flavorful sushi. You have to try a unique cocktail and the spicy miso eith crab! YUM!

Amazing food, horrible service.

Amazing food. We had lots of varieties of appetizers and entrees and drinks. Everything was delicious, but the service was horrible. We were there for a friends birthday dinner and the service was ridiculously slow, it took over 3 hours for the entire meal. It just put a damper on the festivities. We appreciate the birthday desert, but it was a bit underwhelming vs what we got from a comparable restaurant from earlier in the day.

Amazing food, cocktails, and views

Had such a fun time tonight at Lumi! The rooftop is beautiful and spacious, and there are large umbrella coverings I’d you’re worried about the sun. I booked last minute for an early dinner reservation, because I was traveling with my infant, husband, and two senior in-laws. The staff was friendly and gracious and able to accommodate us with a high chair for the baby. He had their kids meal of chicken katsu and tempura sweet potato and loved it. The adults had a feast of cocktails, mocktails, and eats. Everything we had was amazing, without a single miss! Our server, Darby, guided us through the menu and made personal recommendations for our tastes. She even suggested some off menu cocktail modifications! Every single thing she recommended was a showstopper. The sushi pizza, the ribs, the tuna..all of it so good. We are only in town for a few days but are seriously considering returning to this restaurant again for the food and to see Darby. Highly recommend!

Beautiful roof top restaurant with delicious food!

I made reservations at this rooftop bar. I was a little worried while I waited for a table. It was at less than half capacity and it took awhile for them to find us a suitable table. There are some very undesirable tables such as adjacent to the service station with speakers blasting mediocre music. We were offered that spot and asked for better. The hostess accommodated us cheerfully. Our waiter, Jaun, was friendly and helpful. He forgot to get our sake, but apologized and tended to our drinks at that point. I still give them a five because these are great people and the food and sake was delicious. Our food actually came out quickly. It was well prepared and very fresh. We weren’t rushed and really enjoyed the fresh air under heat lamps.

Great seafood & sushi in a rooftop restaurant

Nice rooftop dining. Entrance is a bit hard to spot and you definitely can’t see inside since it is upstairs. Really good sushi. They have three types of Bluefin tuna which is nice. The scallop nigiri is awesome. All very fresh. We also really like the salmon entree. Akira Back is behind this restaurant and he has about 20 restaurants worldwide including in London, Paris, Dubai, etc. Corkage is $25.

Close for private events frequently without notifying delivery service or the public

By franktraveller |

4th time in last few months they have called (or not called) to cancel my delivery order about an hour after I place it because they have a private event. I've discussed it with them before. They seem to always neglect to indicate they are closed to the public during the hours the delivery service says they are open when they choose, as they often do, to close their doors to the public for private events. if they don't care enough about customers to do that one little thing after numerous cases of it happening, why should I pay $150 to order food from them? Contempt for the customer. Never again.

Rooftop Romance

Relax and drink in the fabulous weather on this fantastic rooftop. Be warned… order one thing at a time… we didn’t, and ended up starting with our main- but it all worked out and the staff was wonderful. Make sure you get the sushi pizza!!! It was absolutely delicious and not pizza like at all!

Sushi

Nice rooftop restaurant. Reasonably priced sushi. Portions are small, though. It was a cool November evening, we had to wear our coats while eating. There are heaters but not all were working.

Beautiful place, but food is just ok

I wish I could give .5 stars because this review would be a 3.5. The customer service from the host and waiter, music and atmosphere all get 5 stars from me. They knew it was my son's birthday so they started us all off with complimentary shots. I thought that was really nice. The food is a 3 unfortunately. I ordered a special comic con dish which was a short rib sandwich. My daughter in law ordered it, too. We both thought the meat was flavorful, but super dry. There was no mayo, aioli, or spread on the bread or liquid in the meat. It did not come with anything else either so the presentation looked a bit odd. That's unfortunate. Two people in my party ordered the wagyu hamburger with fries and thought it was okay. The group also ordered a poke bowl and a few sushi/sashimi dishes. They said they were good, but not great. I think for the total price we paid, we expected a little more. It's still a fun, happening place, but I'd eat elsewhere next time.

Tourist trap

By Linus H |

Poor service, food came into completely the wrong order, in terms of price, the food was very disappointing. Nice environment nice atmosphere. During our 4 evenings in San Diego this restaurant was by far the worst and least affordable. Feels like a tourist trap.

Just perfect!!!

Boy am I glad I didn't listen to the other reviewers. I don't know what was off the night you were there but Lumi is amazing! The food is terrific, the service is impeccable and the vibe is just off the charts! We came for a late dinner after our flight was delayed, and they couldn't have been more welcoming! Pearl and Lucas were stand outs. The atmosphere was fun and chill, great music. We sat outside and we were more than warm with the heaters going (we took out jackets off!!!) We ordered the special Box which had 9 types of Sashimi, beautifully presented in dry ice, a bit of flair and absolutely delicious. It's a fair price too, $50 per person, and each person got 9 pieces. It was one of the yummiest sashimi plates I've ever eaten! The sashimi pizza is definitely a not miss and we had the Surf and turf roll which was the perfect ending to the meal. We were satisfied but not over stuffed. (The menu looked so good that we could have easily ordered a bunch of other things!!!) The cocktails were beautiful and delicious, you MUST try the slushie!!!! We didn't have dessert, they have 2 options but honestly the roll was a good instead of dessert compromise. I would come back here in a heartbeat and I hope that my review jumps the ranking up to where it deserves to be! I only wish we had places like this in the SF Bay area!!!

Sushi on the terrace

By DJ Ristretto |

A fairly trendy restaurant which offers good and creative sushi on a terrace. The service is diligent. The restaurant is upstairs so you should take an elevator
