Attentive service. Very good classic italian food

By AnonymousConnecticut |

Very good meal with group of 7. Service was efficient and attentive. Good variety of pasta and other Italian dishes. They were able to accommodate special requests without hesitation. Highly recommended.

Cozy atmosphere

By claussie |

Small neighborhood restaurant in Noe Valley, 24th street. Cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Can get noisy. Good Italian food, nothing fancy. San Francisco price level. Tortellini and Scaloppine ai Funghi were good. So was the Panna Cotta. Wines are around $50 and more a bottle.

Eclectic Italian, Cheeful and noisy

By NewYorker10458 |

A small restaurant with an open kitchen, Lupa serves a wide variety of foods from classic Italian dishes (often with interesting variations) to thoughtful combinations from duck breast to petrale sole. A good Italian wine list and reasonable prices on main courses.

Getting Together

By Mauro1990 |

This was a very good restaurant for an Italian meal. The menu had many dishes to choose from. The restaurant is cozy and there were not too many tables. It’s best that reservations are made. Also they do not serve hard liquor or cocktails. Only wine. Which was ok with our group. All the meals were cooked to perfection, delicious. We all had desert and they were good too.

Delicious Recipes, San Francisco Prices, Classic Favorites

By globetraipser |

This restaurant was picked at random by a friend who was treating us. Although we arrived nearly half an hour later for our reservation, they honored it with no problems. The place is small with about 15 tables, but there is crowding. The room is comfortable and clean, although with an open kitchen in a eatery this size, it gets pretty warm, and it didn't help that we were seated directly in front of the kitchen. The menu has many traditional favorites with selections for pasta lovers and carnivores and seafood lovers. Overall, the menu is rich and rustic. There were also a few specials. The four of us split salad, beef carpaccio and melon/prosciutto for appetizers. For entrees we had the lasagna, grilled steak, a pan roasted fish selection from the specials menu, and the pork tenderloin. All of the food was served at appropriate temperatures and appetizingly plated without any pretensions. The only disappointment was the melon/prosciutto; the melon was sweet and ripe but the prosciutto tasted like they used uncured prosciutto, which lacked the rich cured and salted flavor that I was expecting. The lasagna was amazing. The steak was juicy, lean and cooked properly to order but a bit underseasoned. The fish was cooked perfectly. The pork tenderloin was delicious but the portion size was disappointingly small. The meal was well paced, the service was courteous and helpful, and the owner/head chef Stefano was gracious. The check, including three appetizers, four entrees, two desserts and two bottles of prosecco was $325 (The prosecco accounted for 1/4 of the total). The BONUS CELEB SPOTTING: Sat by Tabatha from Bravo TV's Tabatha's Salon Takeover.

Lupa serves delicious plates of authentic old style recipes. The bread is too good for words. Servers are knowledgeable and professional.

Superb Taste of Italy

By peaceandenthusiasm |

Enjoyed a tremendous meal during a busy Saturday night that exceeded all expectations. The service was prompt and on-point, and they even went the extra mile to help celebrate a birthday in our party. The food was exquisite, every dish I tasted was unique and delicious. Simple, authentic Italian fare that's worth coming back for.

Lupa's warm atmosphere and friendly service, combined with it's tasty food, make it the perfect neighborhood restaurant.

Top Italian Restaurant in San Fran

By Samuel M |

There may be some better Italian restaurants in San Francisco, but they'll need to be pretty special to top Lupa's. Had a bit of trouble finding it, but it was worth the search (and the long walk) to get here. First, the staff is exceptional. Extremely friendly and very attentive (almost too much so!). Salads and appetizers must be ordered separately from the main dishes, but that is the norm these days so no complaints here. They do bring warm Italian bread that you can dip in balsamic vinegar and olive oil soon after you order. The menu choices are very good, but in all honesty could be a little better. The daily specials essentially mirror what's on the primary menu so no deals here. I ordered the lasagna and it was truly outstanding. The perfect blend of meat and cheese that was served piping hot. And, the piece of lasagna was larger than what I expected. The sauce it was served with was good, but I would prefer a more tomato-rich marinara sauce if I had my choice. My wife had rigatoni with sausage and raved about how wonderful the sausage was. In fact, everyone in our party of six was extremely pleased with their dinners and no complaints were heard. We can't comment on dessert, however because no one ordered it. We were all too full from our main course dishes! And, when I got the final tab I thought it was reasonable, especially for a large city like San Francisco. For a bottle of wine, one caesar salad, two large appetizers, six dinner dishes, and various soft drinks the total bill came to just over $200 for six people with no hidden gratuities or other surprises. I was totally fine with that price. Overall, this is a fine Italian restaurant worth the visit and I highly recommend it.

Lupa, is my favorite Italian restaurant in San Francisco. The food is truly Italian, and my favorite meal is the Mushroom Pasta. Very cozy setting and reservations are recommended.

The Italian experience in Noe Valley

By Alexander102013 |

We were in San Francisco for a week and had dinner here twice. Had the bucatini amatriciana, excellent, with also excellent rosé wine. On our second visit we took the lasagna and the FETTUCCINE TARTUFATE (Homemade fettuccine with porcini, shitake and oyster mushrooms in a black truffle sauce) and excellent red wine, again so good, so the real stuff!!

Excellent!

By Cruiser5058 |

Last night, I took my parents to Lupa Trattoria to celebrate their 50th anniversary - it came highly recommended by friends. We really enjoyed it. The owner and waiters made a big fuss over us and treated us like royalty. I can't remember all the things we ordered but each dish was excellent. Lupa is warm and cozy and easy to talk.

Incredible

By kwine |

I don't write reviews unless the restaurant is incredible. Lupa is no way exception. I have eaten here many times over the past several years, and this place deserves a Michelin star for the quality of its food and consistency of its service. Wild boar gnocchi, lamb bolagnaise, and risottos that rival anything I have ever eaten. This isn't just world class Italian, it's world class, period. If you are visiting SF, and want to see how well the locals eat, this is the place.

Good, simple

By Francescotisei |

Had duck breast in marsala sauce - good and filling. Tasted my friend's truffle risotto. And it Was quite a mess i must Say - overcooked and not inviting. The service Was good even though nobody speaks italian and the price quite reasonable...order the vermentino Wine from Ancona.

WONDERFUL!

By BronwenL |

We rented a house for 4 nights in Noe Hill (the way to go for sure) and this restaurant was recommended by the home owners. We had a romantic dinner there our first night. We were really just looking for something easy but this turned out to be an entire experience, and a wonderful one at that. The restaurant is totally unassuming, we weren't even sure it was open, but once inside and seated by the fireplace, it felt like we had landed back in Italy. The food is reasonably priced, absolutely delicious, generous portions without being overwhelming, and the service was fairly good. I recommend the Bruschetta to start and the Panna Cotta to finish. We left in a veritable haze of joy after the experience. This would be one great little place for a wedding proposal or an anniversary dinner. Definitely more a local place than a tourist restaurant. It's a new for-sure stop for us whenever we're in San Fran.

This restaurant totally...

By Dominic W |

This restaurant totally exceeded my expectations of Italian food, rewrote its boundaries and showed me how magical good cooking can be. A fantastic educational experience at a very reasonable price. I can't recommend this enough and am looking forward to my next visit. Btw, I had the butternut ravioli.

Great meal last night. A couple of year since we have been there but loved it. Risotto with artichokes and prosciutto and veal saltimboca. Great service, great wine, ambience.

Feel you are in Rome while you are in the heart of San Francisco

By Omer |

A family-like restaurant that gives you the feeling you are in Rome while you are in a beautiful neighbourhood of San Francisco. The food there is 100% Italian, from pasta to meat and seafood. The dishes are well-served. The staff is really nice and makes you feel like you are home. The owner commented us about the tip we gave. We felt how much he cared about the service they gave us, but for us that was too direct. As their pricing is medium-high for the dishes and beverages, we thought a 10% was fair, but will consider that on our next visit.

A very special find!

By Traveler24594 |

Both the food and service were outstanding! Everything was delicious, and seasoned perfectly. The chicken saltimboca, the stracciatella soup- the tiramusu....so wonderful. The waiters were attentive to our needs. A very special place and I highly recommend it!

Simple, and Gooood!

By Steppi |

Our friends recommended this restaurant as a family-friendly place. We were not disappointed. The appetizers were scrumptious and the pasta was perfectly al dente. My wife's risotto was cooked to perfection. Portions are ample. Service is swift (they understand that kids ought to be served ASAP!) and very friendly. Atmosphere is great, too. Will be back...with and/or without kids!

Delicious food; surly service

By IMB95 |

if you don't mind rude waiters and like good italian food- this is the place for you. We were a party of 7 so a large group and the place got very hot, very loud very fast.....as we left a party of 30 was arriving....clearly some folks like the lousy treatment- but I'm not going back. That being said the pasta dishes were excellent as was the beef.

Neighborhood Delight

By MathmanSF |

Lupa is a low-key pleasant restaurant with very good pasta & salads. Service is also very good - attentive without overbearing. We eat here several times per year, as couple, with friends, and with family. I will write up last visit.

Disappointed

By Mary D |

I wanted to like the place, I really did. Hubby and I went out for our date night and the place has a nice look and atmosphere, but a little too casual and that should have been my clue. We were the first people there, but the place filled up quickly. We asked for water when we sat down and were ignored by the guy lighting the votive candle and then our waiter came over a few minutes later and again, we asked for water. He brought us water and a loaf of BURNT bread! with a very pedestrian and flavorless plate of olive oil. Why would you let a charred loaf of bread out of the kitchen to serve your diners unless you just didn't care? The menu looks good, but don't be fooled. I was hungry so I ordered an appetizer of pears with mascarpone cheese wrapped in prosciutto, on a bed of greens. I didn't want to believe it, but the pears were from a can! and I was finding dried, dead stems of parsley everywhere in the salad which was dressed in with the same tasteless olive oil and what tasted like distilled vinegar dressing. My main was the gnocchi with "wild boar" ragu and my husband ordered the special of seafood pasta. The gnocchi came from a package and so heavy you could build a cabin with them. The "wild boar" ragu was so salty, it was all I could taste and I could not taste wild boar, at all; actually, all I could taste was salt. Hubby's dish was ridiculous...over cooked shrimp and calamari which tasted frozen and old. Actually, all of the seafood tasted frozen. Our waiter asked how everything was and my husband told him exactly what was wrong with his dish. If you want to know, don't ask the question then make disgusted faces at the people who give you an honest answer! We've read that if something is wrong, tell the people so they can make it right. I don't think the owner or the chef want to make it right because they will always have the neighborhood locals to fool. Heard a guy behind us say Lupa is his favorite restaurant. He should go out more... Will not come back. Next time Olive Garden would be better...

Real Italian

By FarAway33617 |

I met up with 5 friends at Lupa Trattoria last night and we had a great time. The waiters took very good care of us - greeting and seating us right away and being very attentive. We wound up sharing quite a few of the dishes. The risotto was especially delicious as were the salads and pastas. Lupa Trattoria has a casual relaxed atmosphere but a nice place to celebrate with friends.

Excellent neighbourhood Italian restaurant

By frequentraveller_12 |

We visited this restaurant twice in early October during the week we were renting property in the Noe Valley. This is not a fancy stylish place but is cosy old style Italian, tables set closely together and owner run. The waiters are friendly and helpful. The food is excellent and portions large - both times we shared a starter, the wine list is good at reasonable cost. We don't like a rushed meal and always ask for a 15/20 minute break between starters and main courses - this was not a problem and our main course arrived in perfect timing. Owner is very friendly and recognised us on our second visit. We would love to have this restaurant in our neighbourhood back in the UK and would be frequent diners here!

very good authentic italian food

By fabiosicecream |

A friend I was visiting brought me there ... well, what to say .... just what I was hoping for: real, simple, fresh, tasty, light & good value for money ..... attentive service... interesting wine list ... if you feel like good authentic & simple italian food in a real-casual-relaxed-friendly Trattoria style, this is your spot in SF !!!! Can't be missed !!

The Roman Wolf of Noe Valley

By LDGM |

Back in November I spent several pleasant hours strolling through Noe Valley which I had not visited in a long time. In the course of that walk I saw Lupa Trattoria which had not yet opened for dinner service. One can’t see into the restaurant from the street as the entrance is curtained off with a heavy velvet drape. Fast forward to a Friday night in March and my husband had a yearning for Italian food. After reading positive reviews we decided to give it a try and were not disappointed. Inside the bustling scene did harken to intimate restaurants I had visited in Rome. The wait staff is highly attentive without being phony. I had the best Saltimbocca in many years here. The veal was thin, moist and flavorful. The dish came garnished with escarole and I asked to substitute the fried polenta for the mashed potatoes listed on the menu. It was an inspired substitution because Lupa’s fried polenta is first rate. Barely fried, the interior of the triangle wedge is moist and almost velvety. My husband had the seafood pasta and substituted a white sauce for the listed spicy tomato. It was first rate and a generous serving. For starters we split the fennel and artichoke salad which was a special that night. We passed on desert but indulged in a bottle of wine. The wine offerings are well priced as are the food offerings. There were a number of dishes, like the gnocchi with wild boar sauce, that I was tempted to try but will do so on future visits. There is a good neighborhood vibe here and clearly it is well known to Noe Valley dwellers. Now I know why!

Best authentic Roman food in SF!

By Curious36894 |

Lupa Trattoria is one of those finds - small and cozy enough and in a great spot in Noe Valley. The food is as good as anywhere in Rome and ingredients always fresh - love their homemade pastas. Always hard to decided what to order but never had anything less than great. The service is very friendly and has an authentic Roman feel to it.

Neighborhood Italian. A joy

By laughingtraveler |

Fabulous pastas. Great fish. Nice wines. Casual . Families, couples, groups- the whole of humanity. Service is helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and never pushy. Our waiter, Lorenzo steered Mom to the lea expensive red, when she requested " something closest to a cab" Desserts are simple and tasty- split one. It isn't a fancy place - you (probably) wont go here to propose but come here for the happily ever after

Great trattoria cooking traditional Italian dishes really well

By Markdman |

I've been here a few times and always been impressed by the food - the pappardelle with lamb bolognese is possibly my daughter's favorite meal, and she is a very fussy eater. I'm a big fan of the tortelloni alla cardinale. The service is good, the wine list is reasonably priced, all in all a great neighborhood restaurant.

Great food, service and prices

By skiang |

Had dinner at Lupa's this past Saturday evening and it was a meal to remember. My in-laws were in town so we thought we would try a new restaurant based on tripadvisor reviews. As other reviewers have alluded, this restaurant is the real deal when it comes to its food. We had a starter dish of mussels, caprese and cesar salads, four main courses including the Petrale Sole special, pork loin, lasgane, and pasta with lamb bolgnese and all were delicious. For dessert we tried the tiramasu and cream puffs covered with chocolate (can't remember the name). Anyway, all were fantastic and met a pretty high bar - we all eat out a lot. The fish was super fresh, the pasta's were all homemade, and the pork was super juicy and was a great cut. The service was very good too and the prices were very reasonable for what you get. Together with their location in the heart of Noe Valley, everything was perfect. We highly recommend trying it if possiible.

Great sleeper

By trinam101 |

Excellent food in a very laid back neighborhood. Service is exceptional and prices are very moderate. Pastas are top notch. Also, the bread is very yummy. The only mystery is why is it so uncrowded?

The menu is remarkable and everything on it delicious. I was there with a moderate sized family gathering having diverse tastes and thus the opportunity to try almost everything on the menu.

Best Pasta ever!

By JB_and_KB |

We dined at Lupa last night based on the great reviews it received in Trip Advisor. We live in the Bay Area, and unlike most of the top rated restaurants in Trip Advisor we had never heard of this place, nor had anybody we knew. What a great find this was! It is hidden out in Noe Valley area near 24th and Castro, which is about a $15 cab ride from downtown. The service staff were all native Italians and incredibly friendly. After some suggestions from our waitress we ordered crostini wth mozzarella and prosciutto which was delicious! We then had a couple pasta courses. The fettuccine with truffles and mushroom was hands down the best pasta we have ever had. The pasta was light and fresh, and the flavors were smoky and bold. The veal saltimbocca was also amazing. The owner/chef several times came by our table to ensure that everything was good, and personally called a cab for us. Aside from incredible food and service, the atmosphere was very warm and casual, and the meals were a great bargain for the city. ~$13 for pasta and ~$18 for main courses. Can't wait to return! I literally dreamed about the pasta! This is an incredible find, but I don't think the secret will last for long....

La Dolce Vita!

By SFGlen |

We've been a fan since this chef was located on Nob Hill and the room was called La Luna Rosa. Yes, the food is fantastico! The appetizer selections are all wonderful. The pork and pollenta dish is extraordinary, as are the wide array of homemade pastas. The scalloppini melts in your mouth. And, of course, the deserts are real guilty pleasures! Lupa, though, has more than just good food. It has a quality that is difficult to describe - an authentic, welcoming, friendly environment that almost makes you feel like you are eating at the home of a favorite uncle. The owner takes the time to greet his guests, shake their hand and have a chat. The wait staff warmly engages diners, without being intrusive, and the overall service is very good. Lupa's atmosphere is up-to-date and comfortable, without being overdone, and it seems to draw a diverse clientele who are "in the know" about good San Francisco dining. "Cross table conversations" are not uncommon. In short, this is a great restaurant that is exactly what people are referring to when they say San Francisco has so many fine, hidden neighborhood dining experiences. We've been back many times, as a couple or with a group, and will hopefully return many times more.

The Absolute Best!!

By Alan310 |

I never bother to write reviews...ever. I do not want to sound as if I have an attitude, but I travel around the world with my business. i get to spend a lot of time in Europe, and my clients treat me to dinner quite often...especially when I am in Italy. I have experienced the most incredible Italian cooking, and i live for it. My grandparents were Italian, so i was brought up in a home that loved and cared about food. I grew up very close to NYC, so i have eaten at the very best that New York has to offer. Lupa is as every bit as good as any in New York, better than ANYTHING in L.A., where I currently reside, and remarkably close to being in Italy. I think the only difference is that in Italy, the food that is grown and marketed is far superior to most of what we can buy here in the US. The ingredients themselves taste better over there. That being said, DO NOT MISS a chance to eat at LUPA. The owner, Stefano, is the head chef. Susanna, our server, is from Turin. This is the real deal, folks. I can't say enough good things about what i experienced tonight. When i come back to S.F., this is the first place i will go to..unforgettable. I am in no way related to the owner, or have ANYTHING at all do to with this restaurant...I just happen to have a passion for good food, and for people who care enough to make it very special. Bravo!! Grazie!! Alan & Lina

Garlic lover

By M E |

Return trip from a year ago. Was ok then. Tonight was amazing. Halibut over fennel and spinach with slices potatoes. I asked for extra garlic and they didnt disappoint. Fish was moist and perfectly flaked at each bite. Wonderfully balanced flavors. The three others at table had own dish and they all loved it-veal,pork chop and spicey pasta. Choc torte was wonderful end to meal. Service great. Worth the money. Enjoyed cozy atmosphere.

Worst restaurant experience ever!!!!

By jeffforte |

I've been to hundreds of restaurants and have experienced already a lot of bad treatments, but this experience reaches a whole new level! We reserved a table for 3ppl and arrived just on time. As we entered the restaurant, the manager asked for our reservation and told us to wait. We thought it would be just a few minutes since we had made a reservation and arrived on time. As he left us waiting for over 15 minutes, we asked him how much longer we were supposed to wait. In a very arrogant tone he told us it would be another 15min (!!!) at least. We explained him that we had made a reservation and were not willing to wait 30min for a table we reserved for. He told us, in an outrageously arrogant way, that this wouldn't work that way in his restaurant and that we could choose to either wait or otherwise we would know where the door was. We then obviously decided to leave as this place clearly didn't deserve our money to be spent there. We then went to Firefly a block further up where we did not only get friendly service but also a delicious dinner. I would highly recommend everyone to avoid Lupa Trattoria!!!

The fettuccine tartufate is to die for!!

By Galapagos_hombre |

Following the advice of trip advisor, we took a cab to Lupa Trattoria. It is in the cute Noe Valley neighborhood. The wait staff is definitely as authentic as the food is awesome. The ambiance is simple, family friendly, and quaint. My wife ordered the orecchiette alla norma, which would have been awesome if it hadn't been completely upstaged by the fettuccine tartufate. I love mushrooms, pasta, and truffle oil, putting them together as they do has resulted in a revised promise. If we visit San Francisco we now must visit Lupa Trattoria for the fettuccine tartufate in addition to Ideal Ristorante for the squash ravoli. Heaven help us if we come to the city for just 1 night.

A delightful surprose

By Patty L |

Friends were searching for a nicer place for dinner on a busy Friday night at 8 pm. Without knowing San Francisco well, nor really a great idea of what we wanted to eat we cast around wildly until we found a place that could seat us. We were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, friendliness and above all, the great quality of the food and its preparation. I had a delicious halibut and was so happy. This trattoria feels like - and likely is - a family owned place and I felt that I could easily make it my neighborhood restaurant. If only I lived in San Francisco!

Not that impressed.

By me3nisie |

Based on previous reviews, we ate here but weren't that impressed. Lasagna wasn't very good, the pork and polenta dish was just ok (pork dry and polenta greasy). Service adequate.

Finally some real italian food in SF

By Klouwer |

We were searching for 'real' italian food and not the 'tourist trap' italian food that SF is filled with. We finally decided to go to Lupa after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. We couldn't be more satisfied. This is the real italian stuff and not the food that is adjusted to america's kitchen with portians you can't eat. Very nice waiters coming from italy. Good service, Great food, Moderate prices. Very Recommended!

Authentic Italian

Our Lyft driver, who is 100% Italian, recommended this place to us, and I only wish I had been able to try it more than once. Located in Noe Valley,on 24th St. near Castro, this place has a menu that had me salivating. Pastas are homemade. I got the butternut squash ravioli with a homemade sage sauce. Very, very good.

Basic Italian food

We enjoyed some basic Italian food that was well repaired and presented. The menu is good enough fora person with different tastes to find something exciting to eat and enjoy. Vibrant and continental atmosphere.

If my dad likes it, it must be really, really good

By muhlberg |

My dad ate here about a month ago and raved about the lasagna. The best he’s had so naturally we returned for an encore. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm fireplace and cozy atmosphere. Service was spot on and the menu had a great selection of food. We opted for the bucatini amatriciana (awesome! Reminded us of our meal in Rome!), rack of lamb, veal with mushrooms and of course, lasagna. All were great. The only slight disappointment was the charcuterie plate. Nice selection of meats, but it was a bit dry. The amount of cheese, olives and salami didn’t seem to mirror the amount of prosciutto. The plate looked unbalanced. There were two thick pieces of salami which just looked odd. Not something I would reorder again. Other than that minor blip, a very good meal and our new go to for Italian.

Terrific Italian Food!

By MisterTravelFella |

Had dinner here on a Wednesday night with a friend. it's a small, casual restaurant where you can be as dressed up or dressed down as you wish. The food was absolutely wonderful. I tend to judge Italian restaurants by their pasta dishes, and in particular, their gnocchi. Lupa's menu offers a standing dish of gnocchi with braised wild boar in a tomato ragu. Oh my: the gnocchi were perfection, little marshmallow-like pillows that were light and fluffy, with a tiny resistance to the tooth, then instantly melting into the outstanding boar ragu. I split an order with my dining companion and seriously considered ordering another serving for dessert. Entrees were wonderful: my companion had veal saltimbocca, which was served with sauteed chard and was lovely; and I had the sliced strip steak with rosemary and olive oil accompanied by an arugula salad with parmigiana, which was perfect for a chilly San Francisco evening (along with the reasonably priced Chianti that we selected). The ktichen was flexible, too, as demonstrated by our server (a charming young woman I estimate to be college age, with a real Italian accent and a great knowledge of the menu), who quickly advised us that the gnocchi could also be done with a plain marinara or in other ways, if were uncertain about trying the boar (we weren't). For those staying downtown, it's a bit of a trek, but those who are mass-transit friendly will see that you can get there easily via the Muni to the Castro stop, followed by a transfer to a bus down Castro to 24th Street. And you'll see from the food that it's well worth venturing away from downtown or the Union Square area for a dinner here.

Classic Roman Italian Restaurant

By Tommy T |

Located on 24th Street just north of Castro St, is this quaint, cosy and warm Italian restaurant. The Roman she-wolf nursing infants Romulus and Remus, fabled founders of the Eternal City, tell you that you're in for Roman style Italian. And so it is. The wait staff (Italian gents who've been living here some years) are all excellent and attentive. They'll point you to the right Sangiovese and you can usually get (even if not on menu) a very tasty saltimbocca. Try the tiramisu. Quite tasty. This is a good place for an intimate dinner and relaxed conversation (the acoustics are favorable, so unlike most restaurants these days where the roaring din is fatiguing and defeats any chance for conversation beyond inarticulate grunts). I've been coming here for 10 years and had a first date here. Reader, I married her.

Just "3" stars now (though the desserts are to die for)

By bbb57aolcom |

The food at this restaurant used to be better; I was disappointed this visit. My rating: Ambiance: nothing fancy; utilitarian Service: good; nothing spectacular, but never felt that the wait staff was inattentive Appetizer: started with a salad; did not particularly like the dressing; I usually ask for the dressing on the side; so this one is on me. Pasta: tried the pasta; average; nothing special Cornish Hen: as an entre, I had the grilled cornish hen; the skin was burned; disappointed. Dessert: WOW --- awesome; had three desserts (shared) --- chocolate; gelato; and lemon tart; all were fantastic.

Amazing food and atmosphere

Came here for a birthday dinner and it did not disappoint. We had the stuffed ravioli with a walnut sauce that I daydream about recreating. Great service and atmosphere.

Enjoyable, Affordable, Homey Choice

By CJ G |

A casual, neighborhood Italian trattoria, Lupa serves up decent Roman-inspired fare at reasonable prices Tucked in an unassuming, small storefront not far from the corner of 24th and Castro, Lupa is the creation of Stefano Coppola, a native of Nemi, a small town outside of Rome. He leverages the skills he gained at his family's restaurant to create some very delicious and authentic Italian dishes. While the menu is filled with ingredients common to Roman-style cooking, it is definitely influenced by the bounty of fresh produce available in the Bay Area. Served on a bed of spicy arugula, the burrata with Tyrolean speck ($12.75) was good, but not quite as creamy and soft as it should be. Insalate misticanza ($7.75), a mixed salad of organic, young lettuce with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar was fresh and tasty. Rich and savory, the gnocchi al cinghiale (potato pasta with wild boar, $16.00) was a perfect dish to warm diners on a cold summer evening in The City. Servers are Italian through and through--welcoming and warm. The Italian-centric wine list is well priced with a sufficient, but not overwhelming, number of selections available by the glass and bottle. The only downside was the lack of a sparkling option by the glass. An Italian restaurant without a Spumante or Proseco by the glass, what gives? Acquerello need not be worried: Lupa is not (and is not intended to be) a fine dining establishment. Lupa is a good example of what it was intended to be: an enjoyable, affordable, homey choice for a casual Roman dinner.

Amazing Italian in Noe Valley

By jpearlsew |

Excellent Italian restaurant in the lovely Noe Valley neighborhood. The place is small but the service and food choices as well as quality was excellent. The waiter was very helpful with wine selections and all of the food from the lasagna to the cornish game hem to the children's pasta dishes were mouth watering. The price is average for good Italian food. Don't forget the amazing bread pudding for dessert.

Best Italian Food in San Francisco

By mrpeabody37 |

Lupa is my favorite Italian restaurant. Now that I am gluten free, I still crave their lamb meat sauce. On this past occasion they were able to accommodate me and put the lamb sauce on a nice bed of Asparagus. Not to say I didn't try a small bit of my friends Parpadelle (YUM). My girlfriend and I also shared the Duck Marsala - frikin amazing flavors and honestly the BEST duck I have had bar none!

Great food

By badger_kiwi |

Made a reservation for Saturday night dinner for 4 people. It seems that reservations are necessary as the place was packed. Overall food was excellent, the pasta dishes were fresh and tasty. Bread basket was so-so. The layout of the restaurant is such that everyone is crammed in and you can hear the conversation of the table next to you. The location of our table (in the corner) made it difficult for the server to talk to us and for food to be distributed. As the night went on the place started becoming less crowded and I would definitely return but would make a reservation for a later dinner to avoid the crowd. Food was excellent, thus I would return.

Amazing Restaurant

By frecklefan |

I live a few blocks away from Lupa and eat here regularly (at least twice a month). I've never had even a mediocre meal here -- the food here is always outstanding. All of the pasta is homemade delicious -- there are usually some interesting pastas as well as some standards (like lasagna, which is incredible at Lupa). I've had several of the meat dishes as well, and they were all also excellent (I particularly like the duck). The only thing I don't understand about this place is why it's not packed every night! I love that I can get a table whenever I want, but considering how good the food is, I'm just waiting for the rest of San Francisco to discover Lupa.

Good find

By Mobile22900 |

After reading the SF Chronicle review of Lupa Trattoria, we checked it out last night. We almost didn't go since parking was tough (should have known - Saturday night in Noe Valley). Glad we persisted because the food was worth it. I had the pasta with rock shrimp and enjoyed the freshness and spicy sauce. My friend had the mushroom risotto and also wonderful. We were impressed with the unique selections of Italian wines. We tried a Sardinian red that was unique, full body and tasty. We'll be back soon!

Neighborhood Bistro with Great Italian Cuisine

By Thomas V |

We went to a big party here and had a great time in this pleasant neighborhood Italian restaurant. The food was very good, varied menu with some classics and others more inventive. Very nice evening.

The real deal

By Alishia5 |

Having just been to Italy a couple of months ago and being blown away by the pasta, we were not very optimistic about reliving the culinary experience outside of the boot; however, the authenticity of the atmosphere and service and deliciousness of the food at Lupa Tratorria was a very pleasant surprise. Every dish we had was a winner! Don't be afraid to ask your waiter for a recommendation - we got honest advice on each dish. We might even go back for more in our short trip to San Fran!

Nice little find in Noe Valley

By SonomaCountyJill |

Great neighborhood gem. Went on a Saturday night and it was packed. Thank goodness for reservations. We had wine to start. They bring you a basket of great bread and the most out-of-this-world EVOO for dipping. Seriously, the bread is merely a vehicle for the olive oil and yet, the bread is wonderful too. I love good olive oils and this one is stupendous. Apparently, it is infused with rosemary, garlic and chili pepper. Leaving the heaven of this, our group had salads and the fungi fettuccine, pasta with sun dried tomatoes, and the gnocchi. We all raved. For dessert, I shared the gelatto. One member of our group had the lemon tart with white chocolate. I can't tell you about that because he would not share! Ha! We liked the attentive but not obtrusive wait staff. The only complaint I have is that the tables are a bit too close together - so much so, that you may be bumped as people come and go. But you know what? The food will bring me back. Job well done, Lupa.

Really good food. Wonderful service.

By Paul_from_VA |

We found this through trip advisor after getting totally lost in SF. Great find. It is a good, neighborhood Italian restaurant. If we lived here, we'd go every week. Service was excellent. Monica was friendly and attentive. In helping with wine choices, she helped each of pick what was best for us. She was knowledgeable about the food as well. Food was very good and served well. Sliced steak was tender and had a great flavor. The broth over another dish of spaghetti, mussels and clams was very delicate and quite good. Desserts were all wonderful, especially the flourless torte with vanilla gelato. A wonderful neighborhood experience.

Excellent Italian food in a cosy setting

Awesome pasta. The fresh ravioli were fantastic. Great value. Welcoming atmosphere. Excellent desserts too. Super evening. We'll be back.

Buonissimo

By CaliforniaRay |

This is a wonderfully authentic and unpretentious neighborhood trattoria with excellent food. If you are craving Roman-style cooking and can't hop over the pond, by all means, go here. I've eaten here quite frequently and have never been disappointed. Some recommendations include the scamorza ai funghi (a smoky mozzarella with mushrooms), tortelloni alla cardinale, ravioli, and bucatini.

Surprisingly good food; Worth the Wait

By David N |

Easy to walk past but warm and comfortable on the inside. All 4 of us had great food - and everything was different and perfectly prepared. Fresh bread. Lots of children.

Excellent Italian restaurant

By James G |

Tasty and well presented Italian food. Service very friendly and welcoming. Good range of pastas. Would certainly go there again.

Moldy smells

By m-sfca |

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the restaurant was a moldy smell. Not a good sign for an eating establishment. We have been going to this restaurant for years and sometimes it’s excellent and often it’s just average or adequate. I generally get their pasta but we have their duck and pork chops. Both we tough. The sides with each dish was forgetful and not very tasty. The wine was very good and the dessert was satisfactory. However the serving was excellent and their prices are very reasonable. Overall, we don’t plan on coming back. Every experience should be positive and agin this one wasn’t. Also, they need to do something about the moldy restaurant smell unless you like eating in someone’s basement with water pressure problems.

Excellent neighborhood restaurant

By Aluor |

A neighborhood gem. The food was very good, especially the pastas which were absolutely delicious, and reasonably priced. Service can be improved upon but for an easy good dinner, casual and no fuss, I would definitely go there again!

Excellent Service & Food

By ZTALiz |

Menu & Italian wine list was fantastic! We appreciated the limited table atmosphere and the obvious attendance from local patrons. The ingredients were authentic and straightforward which is something we also value tremendously! Thank you for an excellent experience!

Very good neighborhood Italian

By Robert H |

Chef owner Stefano, originally from Rome, has developed a warm, family oriented Italian trattoria that is a neighborhood favorite. The food is delicious, the hospitality welcoming, and the service is good. Not trendy or adventurous but solid high quality preparation and value. Highly recommended.

LARGE GROUP~16 BACHELOR PARTY

By DrewCrew_515 |

A large group of us came to Lupa, prior to an evening of spirts at Bourbon and Branch. Prior to going, I read the reviews on tripadvisor so I went with Lasagna. I will admit that the noodles were overcooked on the edges, but once passed that it was pretty good. The groom-to-be sat next to me and he had a ravioli with garlic. It smelled awesome and looked amazing. I snuck a bite, and the looks and smells did not disappoint. The restaurant itself was in a residential neighborhood so parking did seem a little scarce, but overall the food was good. Service was decent for such a large party, but I did have to repeatedly ask for Ice Tea refills.

Lupa Trattoria in San Francisco

By Sightseer3579 |

I spent a week in San Francisco on business for a conference. I read the reviews on Trip Advisor for Lupa and then made a reservation. I was very impressed by the quality of the ingredients and freshness. I usually do not order pasta when I am out but was glad I did - the house made ravioli was excellent. And nice to be able to speak Italian with the staff.

Great Italian cooking!

By Quest4653 |

My mom is from Italy so I know the real deal when it comes to great Italian cooking - and Lupa has it down. I just had the ravioli di zucca (stuffed with butternut squash) and it was excellent (handmade). For dessert, we split a tiramisu - worth coming back for just for tiramisu. Service was great and there is a nice casual energy to Lupa. Definitely coming back soon.

the real deal

By dman3 |

After living in Italy for six months I can assure you this is the real deal. The warmth, the atmosphere and the food will make you feel like in Italy. Definitely worth the out of the way taxi ride from the North Beach tourist traps.

Eat here it's brilliant!

By Le_Keg |

This small cosy restaurant feels like a place that you could come every week a real neighbourhood place. The reviews on Trip Advisor made me want to try it and I'd recommend that everyone does the same. Our special starter of artichoke and fennel with white truffle oil was out of this world and I've been trying to recreate it at home! The pasta was really fresh, the sauces authentically mediterranean and the red wine complemented it a treat! Our waiter was great too and as we were from the UK where he had lived for a number of years he even cracked open some free digestif after dessert - what more could you want? I just wish it was in my neighbourhood so I could be there every weekend!

Good to excellent food; less than excellent service

By lsmkw |

Cesar salad was the best one of our group has ever had (and she's Italian descent); spinach salad was good, but not great. My ravioli was swimming in oil. Lasagne was excellent. Portions were good (ravioli) to large (lasagne). We all agreed that the bread was great. Water glasses were kept filled. When we first sat down it took longer than expected to be noticed by servers, and service was a bit uncoordinated: when a soda was served another server came to deliver the same item and didn't seem to understand that only one, already delivered, was ordered. Setting was attractive and our table for 5 was intimate. The restaurant got loud as tables filled. The bathroom needed attention.... There are lots of restaurants in the area. I'd go back, but not in a hurry.

Exceptional service and food

By Ray K |

After my second time dining at Lupa Trattoria, I felt it was only right to share my positive review about this spot in Noe Valley with fellow foodies. Long-story-short, Lupa represents dining as it should be -- excellent food served by true professionals. From the owner greeting us as we arrived to the professionalism by the staff throughout the dining experience, we felt right at home. And while the restaurant itself is on the smaller side in terms of square footage, I always felt that I had a bit of 'personal' space and could speak in a 'normal' voice throughout the evening (something very rare in San Francisco). I'd highly recommend Lupa Trattoria to anyone that values great food and exceptional service.

Fabulous

By Carol M |

Small, almost hidden treasure....everyone was so attentive and absolutely excellent food, wine and service. Seafood and pasta and appetizers so tasty! Definitely would eat there again!!

Faulous food and great pricing!

By bjhilly |

I recently went to San Francisco for a two week stay. My daughter and I walked through Little Italy looking for a sidewalk atmosphere and good food. We stumbled upon a place called "Caffe Maria. It was just what we were looking for! The prices were amazingly cheap and the food was so flavorful. We were greeted with a bread basket and a bowl of Kalmata Olives, and olive oil. I ordered the stuffed ravioli for only $10.95 and my daughter ordered Chicken Parmesan for @13.95. The portions were generous. They also have valet parking right out front! They also have a very nice wine list, I ordered the house white for only $5.00. Would recommend it highly!!

Amazing Italian!

By Ilana G |

Great Italian. Lovely service, and delicious free bread. Their pastas are home made and absolutely phenomenal. Would recommend their burrata and truffle pasta dish. Ask for Tony. He was awesome.

Real Italian on 24th

By carsonguy |

Not Italian-American food. It was an authentic Italian menu properly prepared with genuinely friendly staff who appeared to be from Italy. We had no problem getting seated early in the evening and enjoyed our dinner at a window seat. The Panna Cotta dessert was a delicious and perfect ending to our meal.

A lovely out of the way Italian restaurant

By Simon D |

Nothing bad to say about this place. We discovered while wandering in Noe Valley. Yelp told us that this was nearby, it was early (little after six) and we were hungry. A lovely soup of zucchini, a great salad with endive, a great creamy sausage risotto and orecchiette with eggplant. Service was great, helpful but not intrusive.

Impressive!

By Sightseer30842 |

Last Saturday, I took my boss and his wife to Lupa Trattoria. They are from Europe and really into food so I wanted to make sure we went somewhere with great food. It was a great choice. Everything we ate was very fresh and flavorful. The heirloom caprese salad really stood out with the fresh mozzerella and the ripe heirlooms and high qulaity olive oil. We also really enjoyed the tiramisu. My boss just told me that they have a reservation with friends for next weekend!

Food for Gods

By Markosokol |

Every dish is simply better than the previous. If food were an opera these guys would be Giuseppe Verdi. Went there two evenings in a row with friends and tasted at least ten dishes. Every one of them had a signature taste that simply made me crave for more. The Italian staff made us feel right at home in their intimate dining atmosphere. The bottom line: Have yet to find a better place.

Really good

By Bill J |

Liked everything. Ambience, food, service, prices. Noe Valley; authentic and awesome. Not well known, but make reservations.

Friendly and delicious

By GoPlaces12250 |

Warm casual atmosphere and an easy place to talk. Service is fast and friendly but the real reason to go to Lupa is the fresh Italian food. Have been there a few times and every dish has been superb.

Italian Restaurant with old school feel but deliciously contemporary

By Mike K |

Excellent Italian food in an intimate setting with a traditional atmosphere. A great menu and wine list and friendly service from a staff with an authentic Italian vibe. Located on 24th Street just off Castro and a short drive from the Mission District we discovered this place somewhat by accident and it's now a regular stop for ss.

Lovely Italian Restaurant in Noe Valley

By SNRN1314 |

My fiancé and I had dinner here on our last day in SF. The food and ambiance was great! Pasta is very fresh! Prices are fair. If you're staying in Noe Valley or Mission District, definitely check it out. More catered for couples or group of friends.

Little Italy in San Francisco

By Micolski2013 |

Quaint restaurant worth the wait. We had reservations for 6:30. There were available tables when we arrived but waiting room only by the time we left the restaurant. The food is fresh and delcious. Best Lasagna Bolognese I've ever eaten! Our waiter was from Rome with a slight accent, very knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions. To finish off, we split the Torta di Limon.

Not a bad neighborhood joint, but definitely not "all that"

By ATLconsultant |

We visited for my birthday. It's a cozy spot with adequate service. The wine and food was all reasonably priced. I was recommended the black truffle mushroom linguine. I cook with black truffles at home, so I'm very picky. Big mistake on the selection. The only black truffle was supplied by a very average black truffle infused oil. I was wildly disappointed. My friend's pasta was way too heavy on the gorgonzola, while the other friend ordered lasagna. It was by far the best of the entrees. Also, one of the waiters dropped a loaf of italian bread on the floor and scooped it up and stuck it back in the basket while he thought no one was looking. i might give it another try if in the area again. Some of the other entrees, like the roasted chicken, looked pretty good. But, in no way whatsoever is this a "destination" place.

Great neighborhood Italian

By chaslin19 |

While we were in San Francisco apartment hunting for a relative, we ended up in Noe Valley early one evening and Lupa Trattoria was recommended to us. We walked in and were seated right away. The service was excellent and the menu had a good variety of dishes with a sheet of daily specials. Two of us ordered the special risotto and my wife had soup and salad. Everything was excellent.

Pre theater dinner

By Alan & Leslie B |

Loved it!! Husband is picky about his Italian food, and he concurs! Had the house made fettuccine with porcini and truffle...delicious! Shared a salad of shaved fennel and blood oranges which was very fresh and refreshing. Finished with tiramisu that was light satisfying. Waitstaff was cordial and attentive and quick! Will return next time we're in SF!

Best Italian in Noe Valley

By Jenna |

Lupa is my favorite place to eat in the city! Between all the friends I've taken here over the past year, we've probably eaten everything on the menu and never been disappointed. The staff knows me by name and remembers my favorite dish, if I see them around Noe Valley they stop and say hello. This place is the crown jewel of Noe and everyone should go here to satisfy their cravings for wonderful Italian and a homey atmosphere.

Good Italian food

By nicka011 |

We had the lasagna and one of the vegetarian pasta dishes. The food was very nice and the service was good. Definitely worth a visit.

Roman food. I keep going back.

By Joe H |

Can't say enough about this place. Try the pasta with lamb ragu. It's one of those dishes that makes it difficult to try other things so we usually wind up splitting an order and ordering other dishes. The branzino and sea bass have been my partner's favorite and I love the duck. The service is wonderfully old school Italian. A neighborhood gift.

Italian Dream

By travebunny |

I love this little quanit italian dream. The food was amazing and the service so personal. You have to call and get directions or take a taxi from your hotel. It is in a little neighborhood that is safe and cute and happening. We were shocked at how good the food was. We even took pictures of it.

Small intimate neighborhood Italian restaurant

By SFDANR |

This is our second visit here. The food is outstanding- we enjoyed the salad with fennel and blood oranges. Our table shared the Fettucine Tartuffate- terrific dish with variety of mushrooms- lots of them. The rack of lamb was exceptional. We also enjoyed the Alaska Halibut. We end to keep going back here.

The Real Thing

The food is excellent, the atmosphere inviting, and the service attentive. My new favorite place for real Italian food.

Comfortable Noe Valley with yummy food

By krume |

I recently visited San Francisco and found Lupa Trattoria while wandering through Noe Valley. We were able to get in on a Friday evening without a reservation. Lupa is casual with an authentic Italian charm. I started with a shaved fennel salad and my friend had pear wrapped in proscuitto. Both were delicious. My friend had gnocchi with mushrooms - it was very light compared to any other I have tried. I had the pork tenderloin - mouthwatering! I barely had room to try the white chocolate tort - so good! Lupa was quite the find - with a very local SF feel as well as that authentic Italian feel combined.

Italian Gem in Noe Valley!

By RealtOr30 |

We loved the food--I had the home made spinach ravioli and they were so light and creamy. The other pastas we ordered were equally good. The bread was warm and crusty. Good wine list and service. Cozy atmosphere and I would recommend making reservations.

My daughter's favorite!

We have eaten and celebrated birthdays here many times and do not tire eating here. Our favorite is the pasta with mushrooms and lemon dessert.

Excellent!

By Passport2929 |

I was looking for some really good fresh Italian food and someone from the office suggested Lupa. So my girlfriend and I had dinner last week - awesome place. I had the lasagna bolognese which was made with bechamel and tomato. The tiramisu was the best! Definitely going back soon.

Great Neighborhood Italian

By SFintrepid |

Food and service are great, decor is forgetable, if you are in the area it is very solid, I am not sure I would travel from downtown to go here just that there are so many good restaurants in other areas. One nice thing is that they are kid friendly if you eat around 5:30 or 6 (though they only have 2 kid seats). Highly recommend for a comfortable meal. Also, not sure why, but there bread is great.

Food as good as in Italy!!!!

By kentuckywife |

Based on Tripadvisor reviews we tried Lupa. We are visiting San Fran for our 1 year anniversary. We spent out honeymoon in Italy, so we thought an authentic Italian eatery would be perfect. And it was! The food was as good as anything we got in Italy. Amazing!! It was so hard to choose what to order...everything sounded great! I got half an order of the Raviolli with butternut squash (wish I would have gotten a full order it was so tasty!) and the Gnocci in tomato sauce (also AMAZING!). My husband got the Linguini and mushrooms (we "licked" the plate with the bread) and the Veal. I really can't say enough about the food. We ate EVERY drop on our plate and were very happy! Though stuffed and happy, we also got dessert. We got the chocolate balls (forgot name) and the creme brulee. Again, we were in heaven. The service was incrediable. The owner came over and talked to us. Also when we left and asked if it would be easy to catch a cab, our waiter literally walked out of the restaurant and hailed a cab for us!! Yes, that is service. Seriously, if you want to take a trip to Italy, without actually going to Rome, eat at Lupa. I promise you you will NOT be disappointed!

Very satisfying!

By Susan S |

I had a lovely dinner, the saltimbocca, which was delicious, with a glass of Vermentino. The service was fast and friendly. I love the atmosphere here, relaxed and warm.

A Wonderful Dining Experience!

Incredible food, a nice wine list, great service and the perfect atmosphere! A little gem in a quiet San Francisco neighborhood. Highly recommended for a group of friends or a romantic dinner.

By all means...

By George_Moosie_W |

...be sure you catch a meal here - you will not be disappointed. Altho the atmosphere is pretty much non-existent (it is like a small cafeteria) don't be fooled - the food is really really good! I had the lasagna which was some of the best I have ever had, and I'd also highly recommend the linguine with mushrooms - extraordinary! A great value, considering the prices are modest and the servings are generous. If you like red-sauce Italian cuisine, this is a great deal!

Exquisite Italian Find!

By ArkansasGal |

After reading the reviews and our love of great Italian finds in each and every city we visit, we had to give it a try! WOW! You simply cannot go wrong with this Italian discovery! My husband had a dish with fettucine and clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari and red sauce..... (from their specials menu)... he said it's the best Italian he's ever had! I had gnocchi with wild boar in a red sauce... (gnocchi al cinghiale$15.50Homemade potato gnocchi with five hours braised wild boar tomato sauce) ....equally as fabulous! We will definitely be visiting here again!!! Prices are wonderful and service was great!

Fantastic food and great service!

By Jenifer H |

A group of 6 of us selected this restaurant for our New Year's Eve dinner. We were visiting from Seattle. We were pleasantly surprised with everything about Lupa Trattoria! The atmosphere was warm and friendly even how busy they were for the holiday. The service was fantastic -never did we feel rushed and they were super friendly. The menu was really hard to decide on with all the great choices but all of us we're incredibly happy with our meals. The salads were quite large and can be shared. The lasagne melts in your mouth- and has atleast 7 layers. The Fettuccine Tartufate was so amazing- the smell and flavor of the black truffle oil is delightful. The value for this authentic delicious food is great! Highly recommend and can't wait to return.

Great little Italian place!

By twill504 |

One of the most delicious Italian meals I can recall having. The place is small (like all restaurants in San Francisco). But it was cozy and great for a romantic dinner. I went there on a Saturday and made reservations ahead of time, but it wasn't extremely packed when I arrived around 6:30. It did fill up later around 7/7:15 though. So reservations are probably the safest bet. We started with the antipasti special of the day which was a crostini with mozzarella, proscuitto, and peppers. It was delicious, all of the ingredients tasted fresh and the flavors were simple yet tasty. They also started you out with the traditional olive oil and bread. The olive oil was great, high quality, we ended up requesting more :) Onto the entrees, I had the lasagna bolognese, and my companion had the fettuccine tartufate. Both were delicious, we finished it all, which I usually have a hard time with pasta. But the portions were generous enough to be filling, but not leave you stuffed. We finished off the meal with creme brulee for dessert, which was the perfect note to end the meal on. We ordered a bottle of wine, and hung around once the meal was over to finish it, we didn't feel rushed out like you do at some restaurants. Amazing food, great service, lovely atmosphere. I will definitely be back!

Food is yummy, service fantastic!

Was there for a family meal on a VERY busy night, and the though a few dishes were yummy but not warm, the service was phenomenal. They were attentive without being intrusive..never felt rushed despite the fact they seemed to be fully booked. And they were very accommodating and understanding for the small person in our family who is very picky eater...

Excellent Roman Italian in Noe Valley

By INSFCA |

After having been a little underwhelmed by some of our neighborhood restaurants, we were so surprised by Lupa! Last night we stumbled in and were impressed by the welcoming, efficient staff and very good dishes at reasonable prices. We shared the grilled radicchio with goat cheese - a lovely combination that was gone in seconds. The gnocchi in wild boar sauce is really gnocchi in a wild boar braise and is delicious! The veal scallopini special with mushrooms was tender and flavorful and the lamb chops in a balsamic reduction were perfectly cooked and deeply flavorful. All the vegetables were well prepared. Definitely a neighborhood vibe, and a diverse group of diners of all ages - families, couples, dates. The decor is unremarkable, and it was a little noisy, but the prices are very good. Corkage is $18. Skip the pretense and prices of other upper end Noe restaurants and just go to Lupa!

Wonderful Neighborhood Italian Restaurant

By INSFCA |

We hadn't been back to Lupa Trattoria for a year, and are so glad we went back! You are greated by a welcoming fire at the entry (nice on a cold night), as well as the owner, who seats you, and checks on you during the meal. It is a small, unassuming place, always packed with people from the neighborhood. There is a saying: "if the bread is good, so then will be the meal". Absolutely true in this case - the bread was fresh and crusty, and was followed by a delicious meal. As starters, we had the special celery root/fennel soup, which had a nice texture and tangy flavor, and the Burrata E Speck (burrata cheese with arugula and a type of prosciutto), three fabulous flavors in one forkful. Our Secondi were Scallopini Ai Funghi, and the special Bass al limone with sautéed spinach and fennel. The fish had a crisp outer edge, but a very moist interior - just right! The waiters are all Italian, hard-working, friendly and professional. The prices are reasonable, and corkage is $20. We did some visual plate surfing as we walked out, and our fellow diners in the restaurant all had great looking dishes. We will be back again soon to try them.

Amazing service and great food

By Natasha A |

We walked into this place starving, because we skipped lunch, when they were just opening for dinner. We had no idea what their reputation was or what to expect. It's been awhile since this night so my memory on what we had exactly is fuzzy, but what I remember very clearly is how stellar their service was. My husband and I were shocked by the level of attention they gave to every table in the place, but even more unique was the genuine interest and friendliness which they dealt with us, and the tables around us. It really reminded me of what it was like when I lived in a very small neighborhood and developed a relationship with the local vendors and cafes - only that usually takes months to do and they were like this the moment we walked in. I don't remember what we actually ordered, but I do remember that we walked out of the restaurant very satisfied with our meal. Honestly, it seems hard to find a good Italian food on this side of the city (barring pizza joins) and this place definitely stands out form the rest!

Disappointed

By Terry T |

This restaurant has Italian food but the food lacks flavor and seasoning. The pricing is average for San Francisco, which means it is overpriced in this case. The service was very good and the atmosphere was nice, but neither overcame the food.

Bad manners, rudeness!!!

By ChristinaRoderick |

My family of five spent one hour and fifteen minutes having dinner at Lupa trattoria. Apparently that was too long of a stay. We were asked to leave in a loud and rude manner. We spent over $400 and we were thrown out!! We told the manager we are not coming back, to which he replied " don't come back". That shows you how they value their clients. Just drop your $$$ and get the hell out! I am 64 years old. I even ever had such an experience! My husband and I dine out often and many times we are accompanied by our married daughter, her husband and their two children. We never came across such a horrible restaurant manager, or what ever he is. No excuse!

Real Italian Food

By Tom D |

Lupa is definitely a hidden gem. My wife thought I was crazy when we pulled up to this unassuming storefront trattoria. Visually it doesn't impress with plain wooden tables and chairs, and bland colors and dark wood panneling. But the food is the real deal here. Our waiter, Simone, recommended wine that he offered to drink himself if we didn't like, an offer he didn't have to keep. The bruschetta was fresh, piled high and covered with olive oil and basil. I had Risotto Pescatori which included enough tender clams, mussels, shrinp and calamari to savor with each bitefull. My wife had the ravioli with cheese and arugula in a fresh tomato sauce. She sopped up every morsel with pieces of the delicious tuscan bread. Desert was a chocolate cake with vanilla gelato and raspberry sauce and cappucino to die for. Go to Lupa for the food and you won't be disappointed. The prices are also easy to swallow.

Excellent Experience!

This is our second time visiting here and it was just as impressive! We had the burrata, split a tortellini dish, and split the veal. All was superb and the wine list accompanied food well. We should have asked about their olive oil as it was some of the best we’ve had with bread. Servers are friendly and attentive - our glasses never ran dry! We will be back next time we are in town.

Amazing Italian Food

My first time dining at Lupa Trattoria will most certainly lead to more. The pasta was a perfect al dente and fresh. The shrimp were tasty, cooked just right and flavored to remember. I loved the preparation and presentation of the ensalda caprese - a nice stake of tomatoes and mozzarella. Every dish was great and the desserts were well worth the pounds I gained ;)
