Would have given 5 stars, but they ran out of sausage!

By SBpicky |

Cool restaurant in West Seattle, packed for brunch, great food, great service, but the homemade sausage looked incredible and just when I ordered it they ran out. Damn, I have to go back. Great breakfast place!

Best fried chicken I've ever had

By B_Aakaash |

Ever notice how just the smell of fermented food increases your desire to eat? Luckily here, once you receive your spicy kimchi, there's a plate of scrumptious fried chicken coming up right behind. This is the Asian/Pacific Islander fusion cuisine and whisky bar gone wild. It's truly the best fried chicken I've ever had. It's a bit pricy, but worth a splurge to try one of the local whiskies from the northwest.

Fried Chicken Heaven

This is our go to for fried chicken in Seattle. Exceptional quality! You can even order it at brunch with a biscuit and gravy! Cocktails are fantastic and the service is great. So happy to have this in our city. Check out happy hour, as well!

Interesting food, unusual menu

By dancercrew |

We went here for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday. It's a modern, neat, tidy spot with eclectic food that was expertly prepared and served. I had their version of Eggs Benedict which were the best I've had for some time. The Hollandaise sauce was a little different, but very tasty, with just a touch of tartness and spice. The eggs were full of flavor, I suspect because they were not from a large commercial operation. The saimin dishes were very good. We had one of each. All together a fun breakfast. Especially with a very good Bloody Mary and bottomless Mimosas.

Flavors unlike other restaurants

Wow what a meal. I highly recommend. Great atmosphere and excellent service and wait staff. One at our table is GF and the waitress was so nice to spend time to go over the GF options. Ma’ono serves a variety of Hawaiian dishes plus fried chicken. When you call for a reservation, you can also reserve a half (5 pieces) or whole (10 pieces) chicken. We ordered everything to share so we could have a taste of it all. Here is what we ate: • Kalua Pig Tacos – the meat was so tender and good • Kale salad – I could have eaten the whole thing myself • Brussel Sprouts – they were the best I’ve ever tasted. Everyone at the table agreed. • Pea Vines – we enjoyed it, but out of everything this was probably the item I wouldn't order again • Curry & bacon fried rice – loved the flavor. Very different than any fried rice I’ve tasted before. A little salty but I didn’t mind • Fried ½ chicken – crunchy tender goodness • Popcorn ice cream – it’s crazy, it does taste just like popcorn The four of us had a great evening. Was it pricey? Yes, but we knew that going in because the menu is online. I would love to go back again.

Great Brunch

By compuwizz |

I had a great tasting Sunday brunch here. Unfortunately I didn't think to call ahead so my party was placed at the bar because the restaurant was pretty full. I had the French Toast with chicken nugget which is more like a fried chicken sausage. This was delicious. The bartender was very familiar with the food menu and offered many suggestions. Try the sweet rolls as well, just make sure to save room for the main course. Everyone else was very pleased with their meals also. I'll definitely return for dinner when I come back to visit Seattle.

Unique, creative menu

At Ma'ona there is so much to choose from the truly creative offerings. For brunch the Eggs Benedict and Coconut French Toast are excellent. Big portions. Excellent service even on a crowded Sunday at noon. Vibe is lively and fun. Ma'ona is a sure thing.

Definitely try the fried chicken!

Excellent fried chicken! Yummy appetizers and sides. An unexpected gem in West Seattle. Great service and nice atmosphere. Not cheap but well worth it!

Best chicken ever!

I go to Ma'ono on every visit to Seattle. The service and food are the best. On this visit we finally got smart and preordered a whole chicken to eat at brunch and then a second to take home... It's that good!

Absolutely one of the best meals I've had in Seattle ALLTIME. Everything from the duck liver pate with honeycomb and bing cherry to the mussel on the halfshell with a spring onion relish to the duck/cabbage dumpling with prune and duck jus...was amazing. Everything including cocktails and desserts were executed really well. Kudos to the staff on their wine and food knowledge as well.

Ma'ono No Ka 'oi

Ma'ono is the best!! We had read a review in the Seattle Times and decided to visit on our next trip to Seattle. We were excited to get a reservation on a busy holiday weekend. Upon getting reservations they asked if we wanted to order the Fried Chicken, we said yes and they would save us an order. We arrived right on time and the hostess was busy trying to figure out the reservation for the rest of the night and my only complaint would be I stood right at her desk and she never addressed me. Even though she was busy on the computer, she never took the time to look up and ask for my reserveration. She kind of just looked past me to the other group, so I spoke up and she said she had to seat them first. So I felt like I was not "welcomed", for a Hawaiian style resturant the first inpression missed the Aloha Spirit. But, after getting our food, I found the Aloha spirit. There was four in our party and so we ordered the Marinated Beet Salad, fantastic, simple but with get flavor. Then we had the Manapua, steamed bbq pork buns, yum yum everyone must have these. I loved the dip and those house made pickled cucumbers were to die for. We then orderd the Curry and Bacon fried Rice to come out with our Fried Chicken. The Chicken was truely an experience, from the juicy meat and crispy crust and the dipping sauces (I'm not a Kimchee fan, but it was nice and the rest of the group enjoyed it), this was a fantastic meal. I do have to say, I loved the dark crust on the Chicken, but my husband said he thought it was too dark and a little bitter. We liked the Curry and Bacon Fried rice, but don't think we will order it next time. Our Son loved the Pork Buns so much we had to order some to go, so he could have them for lunch the next day!! I am so happy to get a taste of Hawaii off islands!! The atmosphere is pleasant but when crowded, which I hear it always is, it can get quite loud. We were by the windows which was nice. We hope to visit again on our next trip to Seattle!

Absolutely scrumptious

By ILiveForTheNorthwest |

The fried chicken at Ma'ono will make you forget every bite of bird you've ever taken. As a party of two, we ordered the half. Next time, I will order the whole because I would love leftovers to munch on the next. We also ordered the barbecue pork buns, which were outstanding. Pitch-perfect service, too. If you actually need a reason to head out to West Seattle (and you shouldn't; it's a lovely neighborhood), Ma'ono is well worth the trip.

Growing on me

By Traveling4Real |

We tried this place a few times when they were Spring Hill and were not all that impressed. Since they've rebranded as Ma'ono, we've been back twice. Each time we've been impressed with great things on the menu. The menu is somewhat limited, however what they have is very tasty. If your into whiskey they have an amazing selection. Service has always been superb. Don't miss out on the banana cream pie!

Multiple visits for brunch

By loveDCA |

I've only been here for brunch, but I've been here several times! They have a brunch menu which has some classic Hawaiian fare - loco moco, saimin, spam masubi. But they also have a lot of interesting twists. Coconut congee, coconut French toast, fried chicken. Their drink menu is extensive and their coffee is delicious and bottomless. Service is always great - just make your reservation on OpenTable.

The best

By Partyof5ish |

Came here for breakfast...arrived right before they opened and lucky we did. Place was packed shortly after opening the doors. We ordered the whole friend chicken and it was beyond delicious. Only bad part was the price tag! $40+ for the chicken! The pork tostadas were equally as awesome! Bottomless mimosas...but they say their is a 12 mimosa limit. Our bill was $300+ which is pricey for breakfast but it was amazing.

Very good fried chicken

By CD323 |

We had a lovely meal here having preordered the chicken....which I admit we found strange that a chicken restaurant made you pre order. Anyway the food was great, the wine we ordered very good and the service charming. We sat up to the bar and the lady who served us was just lovely. Would definitely recommend.

Good Food, Excellent Leftovers

By West_Seality |

Service was great, food was not boring and tasted good. Was wondering if their fried chicken beats mine... it doesn't (but makes amazing cold fried chicken leftovers!). The mac + kimcheese is spicy, but nothing terrifying like the name might imply (no kimchi involved). If you like your whiskey cocktails on the rocks, be sure to mention that.

Still a sure thing

By John L |

It's been 2 years since we last visited Ma'ono and the restaurant delivered again. Menu is truly exceptional and unique. Great for brunch. Everyone enjoyed their choice (try the hash!). Make sure you get a reservation. Very good service. Only negatives -- not much parking and can be noisy at busy times.

Ma'ono infamous fried chicken as take out

By loopycynic |

At least by taking out, it wasn't as noisy as it was the last time we were here. I don't personally get it. White meat on the fried chicken is dry. Dark meat is just ok. Not impressed. All the sides we ordered were way better that their fried chicken.

Disappointed in West Seattle...

By marnankev2 |

Had been a couple years since our last brunch at Ma’ono Fried Chicken and Whiskey. Unfortunately it’s changed. Our Fried Chicken was visibly undercooked inside, basically burnt outside and really just flavorless. The sautéed Bok Choy was a pleasant surprise. But the real surprise came with the bill. Instead of being charged $32 per whole chicken as listed in our Open Table reservation confirmation email, we were charged $44. They did end up honoring the price listed in the email, but it sure did seem like the old bait and switch by their reaction... ADDITIONAL NOTES If you're interested in reserving Fried Chicken, please write a note in the box or call us at ‪206.935.1075‬. A whole chicken is 10 pieces for $32, a half chicken is 5 pieces for $17.

A very unique dining experience

By SeattleEcc |

I got a call from this restaurant a few hours before our reservation asking whether we would like to reserve a chicken. We were quite amused by the call and of course, I reserved a bird (1/2 of it)since that is what the restaurant is known for. We were late and they were very accommodating. The chicken was definitely worth the trip. The 1/2 chicken was ample portion for a couple with average appetite. It came with a small bowl of rice and some kimchi and these went well with the bird. We also had brussel sprouts with becon and apple slices and it was also excellent. It seems that pretty much every table ordered the chicken. I am curious about many other interesting dishes on the menu and we would definitely return to try them. The food is very reasonably priced. I think this restaurant defnitely has a winning strategy. We live downtown and there are so many great restaurants in downtown/belltown and Capital Hill area but I can't really think of any restaurant with good fried chicken so it is worth drive to West Seattle to get some tasty fried chicken. The restaurant is simply decorated with a very friendly crew.

By yolandah164 |

Interesting food with a flair of Hawaii. Clean medium size restaurant. Pleasant and friendly staff. As a local from Hawaii they took common dishes to a modern flair without taking out the essence of the dish I.e. saimin, loco moco. Did find prices of dishes were above average for what they were serving. I would recommend them but bring your wallet.

Ok for me, others loved it

By Christine C |

For me this was only ok but our hosts, who live in Seattle, love this place. The chicken is good and super crunchy, but the sides were better. The green beans were especially delicious and my favorite of the dinner, the kimchi was loved by others. The service was good but nothing special. It was a nice evening because we went to West Seattle early and walked the beach in the beautiful sunshine.

Bad Aucoustics, Pretty Darned Good Chicken

By carol d |

We met two other couples here for dinner, on a weeknight during the winter. We did reserve in advance (and reserved our chicken in advance too). The place was very busy. The restaurant has a modern, austere vibe, but the most notable feature of all was the overwhelming noise. This is not a night club, where you expect such noise, but a place where people should be able to sit at a table and converse. It was so loud, that you had to shout or read lips to communicate with the person next to or across from you. A person two seats away, forget it, unless you know sign language. The wait staff was very helpful with explaining the menu, and how best to order for a table of six. The food was very good, and the fried chicken, for which they are famous, was very yummy; crispy and juicy in just the right places. It is quite spendy for the chicken, but we had a lot left over. We may have ordered two chickens for six people, which was more than plenty, since we also ordered a number of other dishes. I would like to try this restaurant again, but I will check out the decibel level before settling in for a meal. I wish I could rate this higher, but to me, the experience of the meal is as important as the meal, and the noise just kind of wrecked it for me. My ears are still ringing. And I have no idea what my friends were talking about during dinner!

Good! Great?...uh no.

By jtssea |

We Only had the fried chicken along with side rolls and side collard greens. I love fried chicken! I eat it all over the country. It is a comfort food staple of mine. I appreciate all styles of fried chicken and will drive far for the good stuff. This chicken was good/nice but not great. Worth going to try and many other menu choices. The sauces were Great! The collard greens were the star with yummy rolls second place and chicken third. The kimchi & rice were spot on simple.perfection. My thought is fried chicken is not the best for you, but itbis so good for the soul and a needed addiction for me. We both felt chicken was not super moist yet greasy. We felt "greasy" in not a god way all night. So wanted love this place. Only had one cocktail so can not judge based off of one (but it was very 2 dimensional and not balanced great...again good but not great) may try again w group and get other dishes snd a whole chicken for group share as starter. Fyi.enty parking one street behind restaurant and friendly service.

Fried Chicken Date Night!

By Neruda71 |

My wife and I, accompanied by our 8-month old daughter, made a reservation for a weekend date night with fried chicken. (You have to let them know you want chicken in advance, and it's totally worth it!) The chicken is delicious -- crispy, but moist and flavorful. And, if that's not enough flavor for you, the dipping hot sauce is amazing, along with the kimchee. I also recommend getting the Szechwan green beans, and/or the sesame roasted carrots, but whatever you do, don't miss the Hawaiian sweet rolls. You'll have a hard time choosing from all the great items listed on the menu. We probably spent approx. $85 incl drinks, tax and tip. We'll definitely be back.

Go for the chicken and so much more

By ABTravelers |

Impressed with the glowing praise for Ma'ono's menu and of course, the fried chicken, we made our way to West Seattle. As recommended on the website, we called ahead and requested a chicken dinner. First, let's get this straight. This is great fried chicken - the perfect Hawaiian fusion of seasoning and preparation. You can, but I am sure you don't want to eat this fried chicken every day. This may not be fine dining, but this is a special meal. The sides were perfect - vinegary and hot kimchee and white rice with furikake that my Japanese mother would have approved. We tried the dipping sauces, but ate most of chicken sans sauce. You will never confuse this meal with KFC. Second, we missed out on the Spring Hill experience, so can't say what we're missing here. What Ma'ono does is deliver imaginative interpretations of Hawaiian food. It is food that is the similar to Island food, but different. Try the manapua!

What happened? This place used to be great.

By Gunnie T |

This used to be my favorite restaurant in Seattle. Everything was awesome. The fatty saimin was one of a kind. Yummy poke appetizers. Everything they touched was golden. I just went back for the first time in about a year. They stripped down the menu, quality was nowhere near what it used to be, service was poor, and they added cheap kitsch to what used to be a classy look. Also, now they serve everything in disposable plastic dishes. Who thought that was a good idea? Since they got rid of the truly amazing fatty saimin, i ordered the regular saimin (also used to be awesome). Now it tastes like instant ramen. With broth on the side. In a plastic to-go container. I can do this at home for about $1. Wife got the chicken. It's ok. Not worth the visit though. Sorry. I could go on about how this once great restaurant has declined into a tacky mess with an unremarkable menu. Sure, I understand that covid was probably hard on the business and difficult decisions must have been made. I sympathize and try to support these businesses. That doesn't make it suck any less. As to all the other positive reviews, you guys probably didn't experience the old Maono. Sad. Also, do we really need more single use plastic? I won't go back gor that reason alone.

Love, love, love their chicken

Really great fried chicken. They also have some great sides. I especiallt live their fried rice with bacon and pea tendrils.

Fun night out with great value

By Theiguana |

The fried chicken was indeed the crispiest I've ever had. Ordered it with fries (yum) and fried okra (super yum) for a bountiful, tasty and great value meal. Because it was so busy we sat at the bar and had the best time with the friendly bartenders.

Great Concept!!!

By arizona_8 |

Two of my favorite things (chicken & whiskey) in one restaurant!!! Kind of an out of the way spot in the city. Wonderful atmosphere. We could see directly into the kitchen, food was great, whiskey was good. Definately worth a stop if you're in the area.

Excellent another level from fast food fried chicken

By dradDerek |

Nice, plain establishment with lots of seating but not too many larger tables for bigger groups. We ordered a whole chicken, spam musabi, mizuna salad, stir fried okra,Mac Kim cheese, potato Mac salad. The chicken breading was very crispy and thick. The flavor was excellent of both the breading and chicken. The spam was very salty(no shocker there) but good. Okra was a little soft but the flavor was excellent. The Mac Kim cheese was perfectly combined with the right amount of cheese(kind of light not heavy like you’d make at home) the noodles cooked perfect and a little spicy finish. The potato Mac had great flavor without being too strong you miss the flavor of the potato. I had the current local whiskey selection, very smooth with a sweet aroma and soft finish. The service was outstanding, April I think he name was. Speed of food was amazing given the place was full. I would recommend this place to anyone that likes fried chicken and would like to try a different take outside of fast food.

Heaven Came Down and offered us a "to die for" Brunch

Oh Baby! Yum was served today for brunch. I had the chicken with gravy and coconut french toast. Take me to heaven now! She had the biscuit and gravel bowl. Wow. We were happy campers the rest of the day.b

Fun and quirky, fantastic food

By UnrepentantFoodie |

It shouldn't work to open a Hawaiian food restaurant and put "Fried Chicken and Whisky" in your name, but it obviously works here. The food is great and the restaurant is so slammed that with an 8:30 rez on a Saturday night, you we had to wait a little (not a problem, I'm saying this with admiration) for our table. This was our first visit. The fried chicken was outstanding. So were the pots of korean style red sauce that came on the fried chicken platter, the kimchee, the chewy almost-'sticky rice' steamed rice, the spicy manila clams on rice noodles, the pea vines, the butter lettuce and radish salad, and the yoghurt roasted carrots. The menu is divided into fried chicken and sides to order with it, and other entrees for those not into fried chicken. You're also free, of course, to choose from the other side to augment your meal (as we did with the clams). They have a good wine list, which we were happy to see. They also offer corkage of a very reasonable $15 for those who drag in a special bottle. Pretty cool place--we'll definitely go back.

Interesting twists on standard dishes - and noisy!

By Amy P |

Went for brunch with some friends - if you want the fried chicken you need to make a reservation for that as well as for a table. I had the hash and it was tasty but with more of a bbq flavor than I was expecting - and didn't really enjoy that surprise. Mimosa only available as a bottomless glass which I certainly didn't need so skipped it. Other dishes looked yummy and got good reviews from my table mates. Very young and hip crowd and a very noisy environment - the two seem to go together now. Not sure why that has become so popular - I'd rather be able to have a conversation with my friends - nearly impossible here. Service was friendly and prompt.

Great fusion of Japan and Hawaiian cuisine

By Mitch_K2012 |

Tipped to this restaurant we enjoyed a fantastic meal and tasty cocktails! Located in West Seattle, at the north end of California Ave the street presence is subtle and reserved, don't let that fool you! Inside the decore is highly crafted and engaging. We started off with a glass of wine and a signature cocktail called "Roger that", which was a nice concoction of summer ale and valernum. We started stir fried pea vines which included just the right amount of garlic, Yum! For our entrees we tried the Kalua pig tacos and the Hawaiian barbecue plate. Both had amazing flavors and a nice balance of spices. Everything was so good not a crumb was left. One item on the menu will have me coming back for sure, the special whole fried chicken, which needs to be ordered 24 hours ahead... We will be back very soon! One appetizer, two entrees and two drinks: $59 plus tip. Not really set up for families, but there were a few giving it a try.

Fantastic

By ELBSeattle |

Spring Hill has changed their name to Ma'ono Chicken and Whiskey. We've been there once so far for the fried chicken, and twice for brunch since the change. The brunch is virtually the same wonderful Spring Hill brunch we've come to know and love. A few new items (Hawaiian-themed) we will try soon. The apple beignets are freaking awesome.

Birthday dinner celebration

By mdb2008 |

My husband took me to here for a special birthday celebration. We both have islander backgrounds and appreciate Hawaiian food; both traditional and fusion. The food was good; not spectacular but the ambience and service from the majority of the staff seemed to compensate. We noted service at our table and among other patrons seemed extremely professional until the end of the evening. We closed out our tab and our server overlooked bringing a last glass of wine we had ordered; when brought to attention politely by my husband, she argued adamantly claiming she had brought it out. Her communication became short and tactless as we debated which what seemed such a silly point of contention after a nice evening out and dropping a decent amount of dinner and a shared bottle of sauvignon blanc. Our server’s attitude greatly changed the feel of the entire evening (albeit by this one particular employee solely). She became less than professional, non-existent as far as service and it put a damper on what had otherwise been a relatively nice dinner with fantastic ambience and great service from all the other staff on site. Perhaps this individual had had a rough day, but a commiserate professional would have turned around the entire experience and we would have returned and likely raved about this spot. Disappointing all around as this restaurant seems to have such great potential. Granted service ranks high on my list so I may be a bit biased; but this server’s blatant negatively was the last thing we would have anticipated on what was an otherwise good dinner and joyous celebration.

Definitely a treat

The fried chicken is definitely a treat and a comforting meal. It is so tasty, crispy and juicy. I enjoyed it and will definitely be returning.

Cannot give in to the hype

By Katie C |

I live in West Seattle. I eat out a lot. I consider myself a not-so-lofty foodie. I read the national magazine reviews on Spring Hill and was eager to try it. The first time I went there it was just very ordinary and the service was rude. OK, so maybe they were new and just working the kinks out, so I went again...and I had a very similar experience. So then I didn't go there again for about a year. I went in the evening for a small plate and a cocktail. The cocktail was nothing short of disgusting (truly, I could not drink it as it tasted like cough syrup) and the small plate was forgettable. At that point, I felt "three strikes and you're out," right? So then another several months went by and we decided to try them one last time for a weekend brunch, and it was VERY good. I had the eggs benedict, and a friend had the corned beef hash which was exceptionally good. The service was good this time. I'm going to still rate as "Poor" (as opposed to "Terrible") as this latest visit pulls them up after three "Terrible" experiences. I'll go again for brunch, and if that's successful, I'll try another meal again and perhaps tip the scale to "Very Good." But in the end, this is NOT the marvel international restaurant that the elite foodies have been overly generous to (they must be friends with the owners or something - seriously) This place is distinctly overrated...and only "edible" for brunch IMHO.

Attention to detail

By Ben A |

I enjoyed the attention to detail, down to the sugar packets they provided. Gotta appreciate a place that serves whiskey and bottomless mimosas for breakfast! Service was friendly and environment eclectic. Get there early if you actually want to get a bite of the chicken - worth losing some sleep over!

Surprise, Surprise

By HonuAloha81 |

There were a couple of "negatives" for me. Nothing horrible at all so read on. When I set out to search for somewhere to dine, I wanted a real Polynesian restaurant where the staff looked like Tattoo Face from 50 First Dates. I was craving manapua! I am from California and I knew Seattle had places I could go to where I could satisfy my craving. So I come across Ma'ono and was super excited!! We get there and were speechless. It was a bit more fancy than we expected and all the staff were Caucasian (Caucasian in appearance I should say. Who knows, maybe they have Hawaiian blood). This was disappointing to me because it was not the environment I wanted. We had traveled a long way and decided to stay. Even though I was hoping for some islanders, the staff was excellent!! They were super friendly and attentive. The prices were kind of high but well worth it. The food was delicious. My second "negative" comment is about the musubi. It was good but had a bit too much of the sauce they use. I am not sure what kind of sauce it is but my son felt that it was too overwhelming and didn't finish his meal. We had the musubi, manapua, fried chicken, saimin, and burger - all were good. At the end of our meal, we were pleasantly surprised.

Such a treat!

Superb service, great cocktails, and amaaaazing food. We tried a little bit of everything while we were there. The famous (for good reason) fried chicken, the mac & kimcheese (which I will be having dreams about for many years to come), the spam roll (very unique and tasty way to try spam for the first time!), a couple different types of poke bowls (which I didn't love, but that's just because I have the taste buds of a 9 year old-- my friends loved it!) and a few other salad and rice options that were all great. Thanks for the delicious food and great hospitality, Ma'ono!

By JasonTheFoodie |

I went here for brunch today with a friend. I started with the Orange Cremosa; it was boring and uninspired. We tried the Beecher's Cheddar Bread Pudding and were also disappointed; unlike traditional bread pudding, this was more-or-less a free-standing muffin that tasted like a cheddar biscuit. For my main course, I ordered the Special Saimin, which was sadly flavorless. The only decent thing we had was the quiche, which my friend ordered; it was light and fluffy (and almost runny) and had a nice, delicate flavor.

Now Ma'ono - Definitely order the fried chicken!

By joycegal |

This is the latest incarnation of this restaurant, formerly Spring Hill. Everything we tasted on this menu was outstanding! You can make a reservation on Open Table and in the special instructions box, you need to indicate if you want a chicken. They only have 30 per night and you should definitely get one even if you don't usually eat fried chicken. The offer 3 "flavors" if will...original, a spicy mustard and a spicy chiles version. All 3 were great but our favorite is the mustard one made with a spicy Chinese style mustard and sesame seeds. Also LOVED the pork buns (hum bao), amazing spare ribs, tuna poke and Portuguese Hot Dog. On our second visit we tried their homemade noodles...served cold with a cocoanut based sauce...yum! They also have a great assortment of Whiskeys, Ryes and Bourbons. A must try!!

Love

By Kate D |

I live in west Seattle and love this restaurant. The food is amazing and the drinks. Ambiance is ok. It's loud, can be hot with the open kitchen and not super romantic. You can't miss eating here, the food is fantastic. Ramen and poke are our faves.

Disappointing Service

By MaryJoBukovic |

I was looking forward to celebrating a friend's birthday and trying Ma'ono a second time because they were out of fried chicken on my first visit. The chicken was good, but the cold, indifferent service was very disappointing, especially for a special occasion, lets-try-something-different evening. Not worth a third visit.

Ma'ono?

By sandy4150 |

This was about our 4th visit to this restaurant, the first since the switchover from Spring Hill to Ma'ono Chicken & Whiskey. The restaurant was crowded, but I don't understand it myself. The new "hawaiian" format seems very limited. The fried chicken was okay, but not something I would eat on any regular basis. Frankly I didn't think it was any better than KFC, so for unhealthy food KFC would be much more economical. The service was also spotty at best, our appetizer came after our entree had been served. We were not regulars at Spring Hill, but did consider it kind of a special occasion restaurant, however, with this format change I don't expect to ever go back. Fresh Bistro would be a better choice for more upscale dining in West Seattle.

Good chicken - Better sides

By markstlou |

Went with my Brother and Sister In Law when I visited. They raved about the place. They had to call ahead to preorder the full chicken. I thought the chicken was above average, but not anything really special. I've had much moister flavorful chicken. However, we ordered some pea pods that were delectable. The kimchee was yummy. However, never having had it before, I have no reference. The rolls were fine. The manhattans we had from the bar were fine. I mean, the food was good, maybe I had too high expectations. It was a little overpriced in my opinion. Service was friendly and fast. I would go back with them gladly, but wouldn't seek this out on my own.

Great food, service and atmosphere

By Kathryn K |

I live close so I eat out at Spring Hill a couple of times a month. My husband and I love this place. The food is very tasty and unusual, service is tip top and it's usually buzzing with people of all ages. I love the kusshi oysters, wine selection is nice and the small plates menu is fab. I do wish they offered more vegetable dishes -- but this is a minor complaint.

An amazing experience!

We loved everything about our visit to Spring Hill! I had the manila clams with razor clam sausage, and it took everything I had in me not to pick up the bowl and slurp up the broth that remained after I devoured it! My husband had the burger, and not surprisingly he said it was the best he'd ever had. The Panna Cotta was truly amazing, and they have a wonderful selection of wine and spirits. Can't wait to go back!

Take the Time to Check It Out

By travellerjeny |

Fried chicken and whiskey? We're there. The space is very nice, spare and modern. The sides, desserts and small plates are an interesting mix and we saw some good lookin' cream pie. I highly recommend the pea vines. The sesame noodles? not so much. The fried chicken I would say is on a par with Ezell's, but twice as expensive. I'm glad we went, but I don't see a need to return. If I want fried chicken, I'll go to Ezell's and get a tasty, fluffy roll to go with it.

LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

By Casey B |

Ma'ono is a magical gem of a restaurant not-so-hidden on California Avenue in West Seattle. You can't help but notice the lines of people gathering by their front door before they open for dinner service. It's a great place to go with your friends or significant other and try many of their side dishes - ALL are yummy and leave you wanting just one more bite. Altho they're known for their fried Chicken, which is super yummy too. Tip: if you do want their chicken, so when they open and order fast as they tend to run out since it's so popular. Also, their whiskey cocktails are so smooth and delish. Sinner's Prayer has tequila in it but you'd never know it. I don't think they know how to make a bad drink. Be sure to save room to try a scoop of their popcorn ice cream! It's so buttery smooth and melts in your mouth!

Chicken and Apple Dumplings Fried Things

By AOneWorldTraveler |

First, I recommend you fast before going to eat here. Second, get both sweet and savory items. Yummy, yummy and you don't leave smelling like KFC. You can reserve chicken too, so they don't run out when you get there - call & place the order.

Excellent fried chicken

By rinaSeattle |

First of all, please order their fried chicken dinner! You will not be disappointed! This meal should feed 4 hungry adults, or 8 hungry children! It can be noisy, so be ready for that. All foods I have ordered were fantastic!

Love Love Love

By Kathryn K |

Love this place. I go all the time, because I live walking distance. The double-fried chicken is amazing -- comes with white rice, chili sauce and kimchee -- and at first I craved mashed potatoes and gravy, but now I'm addicted to rice, sauce, and kimchee -- yes I'm a convert to eating a little bit of it every time. The Szechuan green beans are another favorite. If you want something lighter, the small plates are also very satisfying and filling. They have a nice selection of wine, and the service is outstanding. Love the vibe also.

november 2016 visit

By Dbboulter |

arrived on a saturday with no reservation, was a wait but turned out to be well worth it. had the curry bacon fried rice and eggs, friend had the ma'ono saimin. I had beer he had bloody mary, and we shared the spam musubi. We both enjoyed ourselves enough that we made reservations for sunday brunch prior to a football game, returning with another friend. I again had the fried rice, he the loco moco, and our other friend the chicken nugget french toast, and we shared another spam musubi. I went with bottomless mimosa this time, my friend had a coffee as he had to head home to vancouver before the game. All agreed it is great and over the top Would definitely return again, was my favourite of the weekend. Would strongly suggest making reservations.

Spicy Chicken sandwich!

By UnagiUnagi |

We live in West Seattle and this is one of our go to places. The spicy chicken sandwich is so good you will have a hard time trying anything else on the menu. A word of warning though, the "mild" is pretty hot so order your spice level with care because they won't let you send it back if you overestimate how spicy you think you want it.

Poke is ono

By Lynn H |

The poke at Ma'ono's is ono. I loved the Hanapepe salt on the chips, served with the poke, and the macadamia nuts added nice texture. I recommend the poke. I was excited to see other "local" options, like spam musubi, loco moco and (Hawaiian?) chicken on Ma'ono's menu. You may be wondering about the chicken, as I did, "Fried chicken?", is it some kind of huli huli chicken? It is not huli huli chicken. It's a crispy fried chicken that could be on any menu in any restaurant. The loco moco and the Ma'ono saimin were disappointing. I wouldn't order those items again and if you have an acquired taste for what Rainbows serves, I recommend you order the poke, have a cocktail, and go somewhere else for your main course.

more fried chicken please

By orsotnas |

Having lived in Hawaii for many years, we decided to try this restaurant, wondering why there is no Hawaii equivalent. The fried chicken is sooo good. Crunchy tasty on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. The manapua is excellent, spam musubi is fresh! The popcorn ice cream is a must try. We enjoyed our first visit and will surely come again, maybe for brunch?

Better than KFC

By KP58 |

This is apparently one of the top 10 restaurants in Seattle according to the Guardian- so we booked it and came with friends. We all agreed that it was good fried chicken and that it was definitely better than KFC (I haven't eaten in a KFC for 25+ years)- really nothing amazing. The place is packed - you need to book ahead, and book the fried chicken ahead if that's what you want to eat.

DEEEELICIOUS! Really loved my experience.

By blackcat1972 |

Had a wonderful night at Spring Hill. My husband and I went with another couple and had a great dining experience. We started with the oysters, a combo of olympia, kumamotos, and the special oyster that I cannot remember. Next course was hand rolled potato gnocchi, OMG! A restaurant that does gnocchi properly, light little pillows that all but melt on your tongue. They were amazing. For my main I had the pan fried rainbow trout, this was delicious and well presented. I liked the almond crumbs and parsley, it lent itself well to the dish. My husband ordered the crispy chicken, this dish was inspiring. A chef that can wow you with chicken is pretty spot on in my book! The crispy chicken resembled a stuffed pork tenderloin. We asked our server how they prepared it, we were so curious! She described in detail the method of pounding out a whole chicken breast, creating a forced meat with the darker parts of the bird, piping that across the whole breast and rolling it, skin on, into a nice roulade. At which point is it sous-vide, or vacuum packed. It is then slow cooked in the circulator and the fat renders off, adhering the skin on. It is then flash sauteed before serving and the skin is crispy and delicious, while the chicken is flavorful and moist. Perfection, served with herbed dumplings and fennel. That brings me to another point, as important as the food, which is service. Our server was Cara. She was friendly, professional, and truly knew her stuff. I loved that she was knowledgeable enough to describe each menu item in detail. I wish I could have service like that everytime I dined out! Kudos to Cara. Overall wonderfull dining experience!

Mahalo Ma'ono

By Al_Doyle_Seattle |

This is a very cheery place. Upscaled fried chicken and a dazzling array of Island inspired Asian dishes. The atmosphere is stylish, the service attentive and the menu diverse. We were impressed by the bar and the bar menu. We limited our first visit to some small plates. We will be back for a real mean centered around their famous fried chicken. It's what has made them famous.

Sunday Brunch Goodness

By James M |

An enticing menu will have me coming back. We enjoyed the corned beef hash and the chicken with french toast and gravy. Attentive and capable staff. Rather bustling and a bit loud for easy conversation.

Good place, but didn't live up to the hype

By Bodhi88 |

I feel a little bad about only giving an "Average" (3 star) review for this place. In reality, Ma'Ono probably deserves closer to 3.5 stars. The food wasn't bad, but I think this is a perfect example of the need to manage expectations. Before dining at Ma'Ono, I read the reviews on TripAdvisor and I fell for the hype. That turned out to be a mistake as unfortunately, I came in with high expectations. The food is not bad by any means, but I was expecting chicken "to die for". In my opinion, the food didn't live up to all the 5 star reviews. The chicken was good - it was tasty, and most importantly, moist, which for me is key. But it certainly wasn't "to die for", and to be quite honest, for me, there's a limit to how good fried chicken can get as there's only so much you can do with it. So bottom line, it's good chicken (I wouldn't even argue with people who want to say very good), but just take care to come in with reasonable expectations. Also, two people in my party ordered the loco moco, and didn't care for it. The way Ma'Ono prepares it is a bit different from the standard way - they include ingredients not typically found in loco moco. I tasted it, and it was good, albeit a bit different. I do prefer the more traditional preparation of loco moco, but again, their version wasn't bad, just different. Overall, I did enjoy dinner at Ma'Ono, it just wasn't as good as I was expecting from reading all the superlative 5 star reviews.

Delicious food & perfect service

By limeijulia |

Went recently for brunch with a girlfriend for the first time. We split the half chicken with biscuits and gravy along with some Hawaiian sweet rolls. The chicken was amazingly juicy, tender, and flavorful. The biscuits and gravy were delicious and not at all dry. And the sweet rolls, served warm with nutella and apple butter, were outstanding. We ate very well and had plenty of leftovers to take home for later. We also had an incredibly friendly, helpful waiter who took the time to explain the menu to us and check on allergy concerns. He consistently followed up with us without being intrusive. It was an all around great brunch experience. I'd love to go back.

What is all the fuss about?

By loopycynic |

Daughter ranted that the fried chicken is amazing here. Moist and crispy. One of the hottest places in town to have dinner. We felt the chicken was overly dried and the wait staff less than average. Noise level was VERY LOUD! Perhaps for the younger than 35 crowd this is fine but for Parents over 50, this is just too loud. Would NOT recommend.

Aloha fried chicken

By Edmund1020 |

If you are looking for great fried chicken this is the place. If you are looking for a cheap meal, this ain't it. This chicken is special but will cost you $39 for a 9 piece whole chicken. Super crispy and tasty. When you make your reservation at this popular place, and you should, be sure to reserve the chicken too. This is a Hawaiian style restaurant, with lots of other classic Hawaiian food like poke, Moco loco and other Island favs. This is definitely worth a trip out to West Seattle.

Come hungry and leave happy!

Great chicken! Great service! Brunch time all you can drink mimosas on the weekend. What's not to love! Make reservations and when you do order the fried chicken ahead of time as they sell out. We had 6 people and ordered 1 1/2 chickens and it was plenty with a few sides. No one in the group was disappointed and we are already planning our next trip. Nice relaxing meal with no one rushing you out! Worth the drive to West Seattle!

No kids and over priced

By Nina D |

I wanted to love this place. I was hopeful after we had the pork tacos (delicious) nothing for kids, we ordered them over priced appetizers. Then our entrees were good but too many flavors trying to mix. We finished with popcorn ice cream and it was good but again way over priced. Service was very good. I would say go try it for appetizers and a cocktails

Best in the West

By Kyle C |

It's all good, fried chicken (naturally), saimin, loco moco, the burger, pork buns, the trout. Plus a great brunch and maybe the best cocktails in West Seattle.

Great Burger

By tdubaustin |

I came for the burger and it was worth it. One of the best burgers I have had. Meat was juicy and flavorful - craft ingredients - amazing cheese.

Fantastic and imaginative food. Good atmosphere. Service was ok.

By NickAgo |

Had delicious fresh oysters, the tartar and the rhubarb desert. It was better than many meals that I've had at much more expensive/highly rated restaurants. I was impressed that such a restaurant is in West Seattle. The setting is pretty nice too, very modern but a bit staid. The service, while very friendly and accommodating , was not quite up to the level of the food. They were out of a few dishes when we were there, but it was late on Sunday (~8:30-9:00pm). I would definitely go back.

Chick fil’a way better!!!

By Benjamin D |

Don’t bother! $11 for a spicy chicken sandwich that is EASILY outdone by a $6 spicy chicken at chick fil’a .... very disappointing

Best fried chicken ever!

By Victor B |

We came here without high expectations, and left in a bliss. The atmosphere is comfortable but a little too "clean", the first inpression beibg that it was some kind of franchise. It was a wrong first impression. The menu is original. We were recommended the fried chicken, and tried also a clam noodle soup. Both were excellent, but the fried chicken is to write home for. Really delicious and yummy. I am still thinking about it two days later. Burgers looked yummy, and so was the kim chi. Server was great

Fried chicken and then some

By 167lillet |

Perhaps the best fried chicken ever! We also love the rotating list of inventive veggie dishes, kimchi, and not-to-be missed curried fried rice. Washed down with a scratch-made cocktail or local Northwest brew, what's not to like? The menu isn't huge, but everything is done exceptionally well.

Came for the fried chicken...stayed for the fried rice!!!

By Hillary78d |

My daughter and I were in Seattle looking at colleges, I read the reviews on this place and decided we should try it. We ordered the bacon and eggs fried rice (highlight of the dinner!), the fried chicken (super good, but not life changing), broccoli with kimcheese (yes, it was an interesting combination of kimchee and cheese sauce...really yummy!), and the pork bun (my daughters favorite). All of it was delicious. Would definitely recommend :)

Great Evening in West Seattle

By Grant1834 |

I ended up dining at Ma'Ono Fried Chicken & Whiskey as a result of a recommendation from a local resident. I was there on the evening of Monday, December 15/14 so being that it happened to be a fairly quiet week day, we got in with no reservations. The local resident that told me about this restaurant said it was Hawaiian food but said nothing about the Fried Chicken & Whiskey as part of the restaurant's name. And indeed, I did not get the impression that chicken made up an inordinate part of the menu. We had an excellent meal in an enjoyable setting right beside the window overlooking California Avenue. We narrowed our wine selction to two wines and the waiter was good enough to let us sample both wines before making a selection. I appreciated the generosity. No one in our group had the namesake chicken, in fact, I had beef, and it was all very good with a Hawaiian flavour. As one reviewer has already noted, the meals here are not exactly cheap but not so exorbitant that it did not represent good value for the money. We really enjoyed our meal here and I can recommend the fare at Ma'Ono as a different than the usual which made for a great evening in West Seattle.

One of the Best in Seattle.

By fun2traveltoo |

The food here is fantastic. No disappoints yet. The duck is my favorite, but everything else is great too. I can see why it was rated as one of the best in the nation. The food, drinks, atmosphere and service are wonderful!

Creative brunch menu

By TravelQueen90211 |

Wow! What a great little find. Usually when I look for brunch spots, I look for the typical omelet and Benedict spots. This menu had some really creative brunch creations. Came here with a friend after visiting the farmers market. Super packed (which is always a good sign), but was seated within 5 minutes. Our orders were taken right away and food arrived within 10 minutes. I ordered the tostadas with sriracha sour cream, and without pork. It was so good!! The coconut chutney and sriracha sour cream really made the dish pop! Best part of my experience were the $12 bottomless mimosas! I never once had to ask for my glass to be filled, as the servers were all over it! I will definitely return and will be trying the coconut French toast...can't wait! Busy and family friendly environment. Super modern interior and friendly staff. Definitely worth going out of your way to try this awesome little gem. Bon appetit!

Amazing cruncy juicy fried chicken with great sides

By Sandra B |

The atmosphere is fun and the volume is loud. One long room packed with people. This was the third time I'd tried to get in and it was worth the wait. We had 4 people and 1 small child. We got the whole chicken and it was just the right amount. I'm sure other reviewers have waxed poetic on the fried chicken, but it is wonderful. Thick and crunchy on the outside (not greasy) and juicy on the inside. I don't usually eat the skin but this was so good I enjoyed every bite. The sides are interesting with the Hawaiian influence. Really liked the curry and bacon fried rice and the braised carrots. We did get the mac and kimcheese which was good, but I liked the other sides better. There are a few more things I'd like to try on the menu so need to go back. The whiskey selection was deemed either the usual or too expensive to try. They have a couple beers on tap and a small but decent wine selection. Did not try their cocktails but they looked interesting. Service was good but forgot to bring out milk but charged us for it. We got it to go. Fun place to go if you like a little noise. Not bad with younger kids since it is noisy if they like a little adventurous eating.

worst food in a long time

By 58775Rick |

my wife grandson and I went here on Friday night with a reservation at 5:00 so getting in wasn't a problem. the waitress was real efficient and catered to our every need, no problem there. we ordered the whole bird chicken as we had heard it was fantastic, the mac N cheese with kimchee, the macaroni salad, the brown rice and sweet buns. the chicken was not the best I ever had, far from it. the crust was way over done and it had some kind of infused that you couldn't quite out your finger on it but the more you ate the more this flavor became overbearing and left a fowl taste in your mouth. the macaroni salad was just plain bad. I have had so much better at a lot of other places that this was just terrible. didn't eat the mac n cheese as I don't like kimchee but my wife only had a spoonful and brought the rest home. the buns were good but for five bucks for three I thought that was overpriced as the rest of the dinner. I paid 76.00 dollars before the tip and will never go back. looked forward to it for 4 days as we were picking up people at the airport and thought this would be a special treat for us. not so.

Awesome food mediocre service

By Jimmy H |

If you live nearby and you like a hip meal then you've probably been here already. For those who haven't: Great food, brunch is fantastic. @Ma'Ono crew: What's with the indifferent service? Why is that trending? It can't last. People will eventually get sick and tired of it and I'm sure anyone over 25 is already longing for the times when servers were just straight up friendly. I've been here a few times now as I'm often in WS. The staff puts infinitely more effort into their hipster wardrobes than their efforts serving customers. As WS grows and there is a greater selection of fresh urban cuisine, service will be more of a deciding factor and Ma'Ono will be left behind.

Fried Chicken and Whisky?

By Kam J |

How do you combine fried chicken and whisky and come out as a Hawaiian restaurant? It's one of those Seattle mysteries, I suppose. Anyway I was told by family that the food there was great. It is a smallish restaurant with dim lighting and water served at room temperature, no ice. I don't get it. You order items from the menu which then everyone shares. We did get the fried chicken and the trout and some other trendy vegetables including sauteed pea vines; I'm not making this up. Anyway, I thought the chicken was average. The trout was very good. I skipped the whisky, and went for the popcorn ice cream, which like this restaurant was truly unique.

Yum yum yummy!

By melzer26 |

What do they put in the tacos? We all wondered aloud. They are really good. The first time I went I loved all of the dishes we ordered. The second time I went the tacos were still amazing but the other dishes I had fond memories of were just a bit off. Of 4 people none of us ate the fried rice on the 2nd visit (they kindly removed it from the bill without us asking). The fried chicken was good, but not my favorite. I'd rather eat that from Thriftway...my favorite fried chicken. However, that initial visit was SO good, that I have to still give a good review, and yes, I would go again.

Great chicken!

By Jake A |

I was staying a few blocks from this restaurant so I picked up a chicken as take out, and it was awesome. The chicken was really crunchy and it stayed crunchy even though we waited a little while to eat it. The flavor was awesome and the chicken comes with a spicy Japanese dipping sauce, which was my favorite part. I know it's pricy, but we shared a whole chicken among four adults. I also recommend the apple malasadas. I tried those for brunch and they were delicious!

Chad is Awesome!

By Tawny H |

Brunch here is the absolute best! Chad has been my waiter almost every time, and we love him! Recommend this place over any brunch in West Seattle! The French toast and bottomless mimosas for $12?? Can't get better than that! Love your faves Chad, Tawn and Pay. :)

3.5 ish....

By DSTSS |

This place is tough to rate....I went here for the fried chicken, and it is good...by no means was it great...the side items are a bit odd to me, and fried chicken without mashed potatos or collards seems out of place.... I enjoyed the chicken...but don't have a strong desire to go back any time soon..

Delish

By L J |

This was my first visit, but others in our party had been here before. Be sure to make a reservation through Open Table, it's super easy and a good idea because it's not a very big place. We also reserved a fried chicken which is good to do because it will shorten your wait time once you have ordered. The chicken and all our other dishes were delicious! Our waiter was super helpful and could tell us about any dish they had on the menu and was able to help make suggestions. He also raved about their whisky bar. I almost wanted to order one, and I'm not even a whisky drinker! I would like to return and try some other dishes. Can get a bit loud.

Excellent in so many ways

By ELBSeattle |

Spring Hill has been renamed Ma'ono. They are going for a Hawaiian thing there, and it works. We are here mostly for brunch, which is an awesomely tasty affair. (Their saimin noodle bowl is what I usually get). It's a bit on the pricey side, but if you like extremely well-made food served in a low-key atmosphere, this is the place for you.

The Best Fried Chicken & Banana Cream Pie In The World!

By Malcolm A |

I was taken along to this restaurant in the suburbs of Seattle somewhat under protest. My only prior experience with fried chicken was of the KFC variety and I was resigned to wasting a wasting a valuable night out in Seattle eating a greasy unpleasant meal. All I can say is that my opinion of fried chicken was transformed in one night. I didn't know it could be this good and I have to wonder how on earth the mass produced imitation has ever taken off. This Korean/American style cuisine is both refreshing and tasty and something very different from anything I've tried before. In terms of originality it puts that other "Original Recipe" claim to absolute shame. The fried chicken at Ma'ono is crisp, tasty, succulent and very morish! The accompanying Korean delicacies and tit-bits complement the meal perfectly. The restaurant itself is noisy, bustling and full of locals. The waiter is a wonderful big-hearted, jovial man who obviously loves his job as much as the food he serves! In regards to dessert, my first taste of genuinely home made Banana Cream Pie is also likely to be one that will never be matched. Out of this world! If you're in Seattle, make the drive to this un-pretentious little restaurant. Well worth the short drive. (Recommended to make a booking and mention that you'd like to order the fried chicken. They do run out on a very busy night!)

Excellent Approach to Hawaiian Food

World Class in West Seattle

By RKW206 |

I've eaten here several times, including brunch (chicken 'n waffles!), Recession Mondays & special occasion celebrations. They come through every time...it's a forward menu, adventuresome with many more hits than misses. Reasonable markup on the small but well-chosen wine list. Great drinks at the small bar. I love everything here but the noise level...hard surfaces make it quite noisy when crowded...which is frequently.

Unique & Super Delicious

By Linda O |

4 of us ordered about 6 different dishes to share, each amazing exCEPT, the chicken which was simply good. I've had (& cooked) better, so next time will just skip it and fill up on all the other awesome things like the poached pear & endive salad, the green beans, the bbq'd pork... Excellent!

Bottomless Mimosa's !!

By MAS9024 |

Went here for brunch .. it was great! Four of us and we ate (not all of us had everything) Spam Musubi (outstanding), (their Kimchee is reputed to be excellent, we didn't have it this trip). Coconut French Toast (the coconut butter is to die for) and it's a lot to eat. Took home the left overs for breakfast the next day. Corned beef hash (best around). Pork Loin Ham Benedict (awesome). They have great coffee and of course the Bottomless Mimosa's !! We also ordered the Fried Chicken ahead of time, had it split to take home for another day. It's an expensive take home but worth the experience .. biscuits and gravy accompany. Spartan, spiffy establishment ... GO HERE.!

Yummy food in a cavern!

By Rexifries |

I would have given this place a 4 if it weren't so dark and loud! I had loco moco (without gravy because i am celiac), and it was fabulous without gravy. The beef is house-ground, seasoned perfectly, on top of perfect rice with a fried egg and delicious sausage links. They serve a lovely herb salad on the side to mix in for added flavor and kick. The wait staff were fast and knowledgeable. My hubby LOVED his fried chicken sandwich. We'll be back with ear plugs and a flash light!

Would you like to reserve a chicken? You should!

By Scott M |

Okay, when we made the reservation for this place, we were asked, "Would you like to reserve a chicken?" I've never been asked that before, so right away, I knew this would be an experience! I've been to Hawaii several times, so I don't really get why it's considered a Hawaiian style restaurant, to me it was more of a Down South USA vs. Asian Fusion restaurant, with Hawaiian decorations and forced themes. But with that being said, the food was damn good. The grilled asparagus in bone marrow was very good, and not as "bone marrow" as you'd think. The curry and bacon fried rice was very good, and we could have had a double order on it. Surprisingly the rice comes in a very small bowl, and sort of a rip off for $6. The $5 macaroni salad was probably the most Hawaiian thing, done in the traditional fashion of mixing a macaroni and potato salad together. Very simple, but also kind of a rip off. The Ma'Ono Saimen Noodles was the biggest disappointment with flavorless broth, and noodles also with no flavor. If you want noodles go to a noodle house, not a place with Fried Chicken and Whiskey in the title! For the main course, we reserved our $38 whole chicken, which was very good. It came with dipping sauces and Korean kimchi, and a bowl of rice. If I were to come back here (which I would!) I would skip the overpriced sides and stick to the Fried Chicken, and the cans of Maui Brewing Co. beer, which you can't find in very many places. In a nutshell: if you want Asian Fusion food you can find better. If you want Hawaiian food you can find better; because there's not much here! If you want Fried Chicken, this is a sure bet, and crowd pleaser!

Divine Fried Chicken

By David E |

Just had a late lunch over the weekend, and...WOW! I haven't had fried chicken that good since I lived in the South; and different too: The crust very savory, with a hint of sweetness, and the meat moist and delicious The Biscuits and Sausage Gravy were also stupendous. The only thing that was a minus was the very few choices of anything green (vegetables; cooked or fresh) on the menu--maybe the dinner menu is more generous in that regard. But if delicious fried chicken is what you seek; you will not be disappointed.

First visit, will be back

By dickanddoug |

We never made it to the old Spring Hill before they changed the name and concept to Ma'ono. But the chicken sounded great and it was. We loved the sauces served with it, and the steamed rice with herbs. The kimchi was fresh and good. Interior is modern and busy, with open kitchen views. Servers were attentive and helpful. I'd recommend it as a place to go with friends or a group to share several dishes. It is noisy with chatter and hard surfaces.

One of the best friend chickens ever (and I am from the south and know good fried chicken )

By mopsos |

A wonderful waitress at Barolo, a trendy Italian restaurant recommended Ma'Ono for brunch when I lamented the lack of available quaint brunch places ( after all a truly civil Sunday begins with bottomless mimosas). I arrived and honestly the outside almost turned me away as the facade seems more suitable to a shoe store than a quaint brunch spot. However, mom taught me never to judge the book by the cover...... The inside is modern, well lit, appealing and trendy without trying! Cheeto the bartender greeted us and promptly led us to a great table and Cristina our waitress arrived to guide us through the menu. Disclaimer, I love good fried chicken. Nevetheless,Iwhe not putting a lot of faith in finding good friend chicken in a clearly Hawaian- American fused restaurant, I had to try..... The chicken was simply among the best ever!!!! The bottomless mimosas (made with a decent champagne) offered a wonderful accompaniment, the house made sausage and biscuits served with the chicken equaled the experience, and finally the house cut fries and homemade ketchup and the Hawaian BBQ steamed pork buns were equally wonderful. Cristina and the entire staff made the experience perfect with their clear devotion to their eatery and it's culinary creations!! ( pre order the chicken they do runout)

Amazing thoughtful food

Been to Spring Hill both for dinner and brunch, and it is truly great for any meal. Don't miss the apple beneighs or the homemade chicken nuggets and waffles.

Great neighborhood place. They were able to seat 6 of us without a reservation. Burgers were the bomb! And the appetizers were delicious! Great service also!

Unique Experience - Good Chicken

By MSWood2700 |

Very interesting place. Was told to "reserve" a chicken as they only fry so many each night. The cost of the chicken is $39.99 but was told it feeds three people We reserved the chicken and was not disappointed. It was delicious. We also ordered the green beans and they were the best ever. The waitress was very kind and made some suggestions for our vegetarian at the table. She mentioned a really great salad that was not on the menu. You need to try the rolls with pan drippings....to die for. Yes, I did order a whisky (which I normally don't drink) and it was smooth and went well with the chicken. I typically drink wine, but when in Rome, or in this case, west Seattle....the whisky was recommend and I indulged. Will return to try some of the noodle dishes on the menu. Only downfall is the noise level. Too loud.

Go for brunch!!!!

All I can say is WOW! Can't believe I have lived in Seattle for 11 years and have never been here! Food was amazing. Whiskey was even better. I went with 6 people from work and we ordered 2 chickens. Lots of food and it was all delish! I loved it so much, I went back a week later :) Reserve your chickens ahead of time to make sure they don't run out. Highly recommend!

Really really good fried chicken

By PJSGFJ95 |

Fried chicken is really crispy and full of flavor. Our table of 8 were pretty quiet when the food arrived because the food was so good. Service and ambiance round out the whole experience. Recommend a visit.

Much Yum

We love the small plates at Ma'ono!. Don't miss the beet salad, smoked ribs and the curried bacon fried rice! Prompt, friendly service and a nice draft menu as well!

Order your chicken 1 day in advance :)

This great Hawaiian/Japanese place has really great food. Start with a poke bowl with taro chips, and chose a huge ramen bowl full of goodness and pork. The spicy chicken sandwich is deep fried nirvana and desserts are sublime. Our first visit there and everyone was raving about the fried chicken but you have to order it one day in advance. We didn’t but we will. You? Whichever you choose you won’t lack for great dining here.

Sunday brunch was good, tostadas with kahlua pork very good

By Wesley |

Came here with the wife and ordered the tostadas with siracha cream cheese, black beans, eggs, and kahlua pork and much more! Very flavorful. Place was packed with a lively vibe. We really enjoyed the place. Had bottomless mimosas.

Great, filling brunch

By Nick |

Delicious and very filling food. The Loco Moco is not for the feint hearted, a sizable portion of beef, pork, rice and eggs. The fried chicken is delicious and some of the best we've had, where the sheer amount with French toast accompanying the sausage gravy made for a second meal!

Re-Imagined & Worth Another Look! Service Much Better!

By SeattleAnthony |

I had dinner with three friends at the newly re-imagined Ma‘ono Fried Chicken & Whisky (formerly Spring Hill Restaurant & Bar). I was reluctant to dine there as my last experience just prior to their closing for remodel was less than stellar. I had previously (6x’s in 2011) enjoyed Spring Hill’s food offerings & their brunch had always been a favorite, but, the service was consistently terrible at best. Long delays, indifferent staff and more often chaotic service. Beverages from the bar were also disappointing. It was only the food that continued to bring us back. Enough about the past. The new website/reservation system suggests to “reserve” your fried chicken as they only prepare 30 per night. We did as recommended. When we arrived, the greeter was very nice! She showed us to our table and offered us menus. Our server was there in just a matter of moments and confirmed our reserved chickens. One of my friends ordered a Black Label Crown Royal Manhattan without bitters. I ordered the same and the others, some wine. The drinks arrived in less than 5 minutes. Very impressed by the timing improvement. The cocktail was one of the finest I have tasted in Seattle. The server was amazing. Effortlessly guiding us through the evening and offering suggestions which we gladly followed, confronted by an unfamiliar menu. We ordered the Marinated Beets with (compressed) Nashi Apples, Horseradish Yogurt and Shiso Leaf. The plate was as beautiful as it was delicious. Also enjoyed the Wood Grilled Kalbi Beef Short Ribs with Hot Chilies and Grilled Scallion. While not as pretty as the salad, it was quite tasty. The Fried Chicken was amazing as expected! Served with a mason jar of Spicy Kimchi (which all said was great…I did not try) and rice along with two dipping sauces. Our server suggested we enjoy the sauces on the side, but, we could have the chicken tossed in one of the sauces. Dipping was the way to go. Chicken stayed crispy and enjoyed the two sauces equally. We shared two desserts for the table as we were ready to die. The Carrot Cake “Shake” was o.k., but, the Popcorn Ice Cream was a true taste sensation! Not certain what happened to cause the tremendous service improvement. Keep up the great work! We were thrilled by the evening on all levels.

Good Chicken Great Whisky

By Brad D |

We took a drive to West Seattle on a sunny Sunday to check out the neighborhood and Alki Beach. After researching restaurants in the area we decided to give Ma'ono Fried Chicken & Whisky a try- based upon some of the rave reviews on Trip Advisor. We sat at the bar and when we ordered the fried chicken we were informed that "they were all spoken for" and would need to order something else. About to leave, the bar tender said he would check with the kitchen to see if they could accommodate- they did and we stayed. We had a half fried chicken- 5 pieces with 2 biscuits and sausage gravy and maple syrup- plenty for two. I was expecting over-the-top special delicious and was a bit disappointed. The chicken was good, don't get me wrong- it was not greasy and moist in the center. But the coating was a little over done. The biscuits were good as well, but nothing special. I did try the Whisky- I had the Bastille (French, $11 for a measured 1shot pour). Now this was smooth and over-the-top delicious- and I didn't even think that I liked Whisky! If you happen to be in the hood, sure give it a try and you will likely get good fried chicken. But, in my humble opinion, it is not good enough to warrant a special trip.

Nice and spicy

We had the chicken sandwich medium hot. It was perfect spice wise and we also ordered some side dishes which weren't necessary cause the sandwich is quite rich. Good adequate service.

The chicken is to die for, that's why you have to reserve one!

Being raised in the south, Fried Chicken was a staple that you don't see up in the Pacific Northwest for several obvious reasons, that most would suspend if they tasted this Chicken from heaven. They also have some great green beans! In a word, "Yum"

Excellent chicken

While on a trip to visit family, we were taken to this great place. We had to make a reservation and we were met with friendly staff. The chicken was amazing and the sides were very tasty. As some other reviewers have mentioned it was pricey. If you plan for it though it is definately a place to check out.

Fried chicken cold in the middle

By Steven S |

I love fried chicken and heard great things about Ma'ono. Ordered half chicken for $15. Dark crispy battered children arrived, looked great. After biting into the first piece of chicken I realized the batter and outer were hot but the centre was 'fridge' cold. They make this big thing about ordering your chicken 24 hrs in advance but it was 'available' tonight. Pre cooked and held in a fridge no doubt. If only they had checked with a thermometer. The server was unapologetic, replacing it for hot. The batter doesn't taste of much, just grease and salt. My wife's food looked and tasted great. The evening was spoilt. They didn't seem to care. No checking how the meal was, no thank you or good bye.

Very disappointed

We loved the Spring Hill dining experience, the food was so fresh and clever. So sad to see the change away from unique, fresh, creative dining experience to concept food, whatever the name change. Sad outcome for those who drove all the way to West Seattle for the experience.

I love Fried Chicken

By lawdawg1 |

Ma'ono (Spring Hill) recently went through a name/menu change. Their popular fried chicken dinner is now a featured, regular everyday menu item. My wife and I used their easy Open Table reservation link to have dinner there on Friday night. We specified we wanted the fried chicken dinner we had heard so much about. For $38.00 you get one whole chicken cut up into 10 pieces and a small bowl of rice as well as a serving of kimchee served family style. The chicken indeed is very good. Moist and flavorful, it came with two dipping sauces (honey mustard and a mild chili sauce). I absolutely love fried chicken so I used the sauces sparingly. My with enjoyed both. We also ordered a side of pea vines which was excellent. Haven't decided if we would go back. The food and service was excellent. Kinda pricey @$38.00, and not a fan of kimchee. As rice eaters, the portion was very small. Not sure more was available for the asking or if there would be a larger portion for a larger group. Maybe if they offered a choice of sides rather than the rice and kimchee we would be more inclined to return.

Wow, the fried chicken is tasty

I love me some fried chicken so I can't believe it took me so long to try this place. We came here on a Saturday around 6 pm. The restaurant was packed but there were a few seats at the bar so we grabbed them. After ordering a few drinks, we ordered the whole fried chicken. The food came out much faster than expected, but that was a good thing as we were starving. On the side was some Korean kimchi, a good portion of rice and their version of a Korean dipping sauce. The chicken was awesome. It was fried perfectly and even the breast meat was incredibly juicy and tender, Though the price was a bit high, sometimes you have to pay more for perfection. The seasoning on it was awesome and rounded out the amazingness of the bird. The Korea dipping sauce was a mix of gochujang (red pepper paste) and some other spices like vinegar. It accented the chicken very well and had a slight smokiness to it. The kimchi was good. Not the best I've had but a good one none the less. Sitting at the bar, the service was awesome. The bartenders made sure we got everything we needed in a very timely manner. I can't wait to go back.

Burnt to hell, WAY overpriced chicken!

By John D'ohh |

We visited here based on a so called rave review (paid?). After earing the chicken was a "must have", we decided to get a whole chicken. Service was acceptable, but the wait time was a bit long. The Mac N Cheese was kinda bland, but the pièce de résistance was the twice fried chicken, and not in a good way. This thing was burnt to hell and had zero flavor. All that came through was a burnt, charred taste and was absolutely horrid. There was plenty left over and we didnt even bother to take the extras with as there was no use in even trying to salvage it. Frankly, I left pissed and feeling ripped off. I've had far better chicken from QFC!

Not Good for the Diet and Proud of It

Amazing Hawaiian style food, and the fried chicken is amazing. Not the cheapest place in the world, but you are in Seattle after all. Disappointed they stopped the spicy green beans but a small price to pay

OMG what a burger

By garrison p |

This restaurant is known for it's fried chicken, but it made a Best Burger in Seattle list that I'm following... This burger, the kimcheese burger, is easily one of the most delicious burgers I've eaten. From the King's sweet bun, to the fall-apart beef, and the sauces, I didn't want this burger to end. I'll be back with friends and family.

Great Experience

Very good food, we had the duck and the crispy pork pasta. We are excited to have such a good restaurant in West Seattle.
