We recently attended Mad Rex for a friend’s birthday, and it was an experience none of us will soon forget. Rare is the restaurant that so precisely captures the essence of its theme, yet Mad Rex‘s aesthetic portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world was as if pulled directly from a prophecy of destruction. Unfortunately, the decor wasn’t the only component of our experience that was post-apocalyptic. Mad Rex resembled a world devoid of civilization; a barren, resource-depleted wasteland in which its protagonists attempt to overcome the grim conditions of reality. The cause? We may never know. Perhaps a cybernetic revolt, nuclear war with mutually assured self-destruction, or total ecological collapse. By the time we were done, we were shaken, on the verge of frenzy. Drinks: Mad Rex touted its varied elixirs, which it termed “cocktails.” Uncertain, we carefully selected our first beverages, hoping they would bring us towards spiritual resurrection and deliver us from our dystopian nightmare. Unfortunately, Mad Rex’s bartenders could not be bothered by such pre-apocalyptic conventions as “measuring the ingredients,” leaving iterations of the same drinks varying wildly in flavor, color, and alcohol content. Undeterred, we pushed on, trying other cocktails, all of which suffered from the same inconsistency and carelessness that may have resulted from the feverish mania of a prophetic end-times revelation. Nobody has time for recipes in the midst of a real life cataclysm. Pretty soon, we were no longer drinking to forget; rather, we were drinking to remember a time when our cocktails didn’t have 30 ingredients, and when they did they were made the same way every time. Service and Food: The waitress clung to her iPad, a relic of better times, that inspired confidence in the accuracy of the orders we would place. Despite the precision one might expect when entering orders on an electronic device, it was clear that our waitress failed to anticipate that the crippled post-apocalyptic infrastructure would preclude the transmission of our orders to the local ordering outpost, for that is the only sensible explanation for why much of what we ordered never made it to the table despite our bill also reflecting numerous incremental erroneous charges. We should have known that heat would be an issue: our lukewarm-to-cold entrees reflected the stark reality of our meaningless existence, and the inability to order drinks at the same time as our food suggested that our collective viscera would remain desiccated throughout the evening. Though the meal had concluded, we contemplated our own mortality and reflected on the bounty of our mandatory 18% gratuity as we waited 40 minutes for our check to be delivered.

My sister and I went here for dinner before a concert and it was so cool! Our waitress, Deanna, was so sweet. She played the part that we “survived” the apocalypse. She was enthusiastic and very helpful. She answered all our questions so we could have the best experience possible. Try all the drinks! And definitely check out the virtual reality activities. Would totally go back again.

Met some friends from Philadelphia at Mad Rex. We arrived early and were exploring the unique decor and stumbled across the virtual reality room. I had never done this and it was really fun. The decor is really interesting post apocalyptic with items from movie sets. Food was delicious and fresh. Great time!

I've visited Mad Rex twice- once in the fall and again a few weeks ago. I sat at the bar on both occasions. I'll start with- I would visit again, but my experiences were both disappointing. I did not give this two stars because the theme is pretty cool and worth seeing. This restaurant is located around the corner from The Fillmore and the recently opened Goose Island Brewery. The location works if you want to grab a bite before a show. The service at the bar was slow on both occasions. We sat and waited to be asked about our order. It took longer than it should have. On the first occasion, the bar was not crowded, but we still waited to be served. The second occasion the bar was full, but not what I would consider crowded and we waited even longer. The bartenders were kind, but when you are sitting at a bar, you want to have a drink in front of you within a reasonable amount of time. The drinks on both occasions were quite average. We sampled their signature drinks, but they missed their mark. The food was also average- just that, average. I think the prices are reasonable. I can eat and drink at a local dive bar or dine at a five star restaurant. I set my expectations accordingly. I feel like Mad Rex has greater potential. I will give it another shot and hope for better.

Was really hoping this would be good. The decor is Mad Max themed, sort of, I guess why the name Mad Rex, and it is really cool. They have a VR room too that my kids liked. Mentioning the kids, the place lacked a kids menu. I guess they are not really targeting families with kids. Had one kid with us who just had fries and my son did not like the burger, it was an adult burger (big) and not really made for someone small, he had two bites and passed on it. My daughter wanted the pulled pork, but they were not serving it (more on that later), so she went with the chicken wings. The Survivor option was different, but something similar I had before in a Korean BBQ, where you cook the meat, but at Mad Rex you do it on a 700F flat rock. A novelty, and kind of neat, but nothing I would do again. The bar looked pretty good, but did not get a chance to try it, just had an iced tea. They have a nice looking sandwich menu, but for some reason they stop serving it at 3:00. A shame, because it would have given the kids a few more option (I was there ~5, so no sandwiches for us). The waiter was really good, and did a good job going over the menu and getting us our food. The parking stinks, especially if something is going on at the Fillmore or the comedy club next door. You may end up paying $20 to park (does Rex validate and cover the parking??). Maybe if I was with my friends or just my wife, it would have been a better experience. With my kids, it was disappointing. I would not go back again with my kids. Maybe I would try it again with my wife, but only if I happened to be in the area, it is not something I am going out of my way to get to.

If you want a nice hot comforting meal, this ain’t the place. Wait for order was too long. We were served cold coffee, cold hard waffles and cold dry chicken. Daughter’s burger needed help by way of heavy condiments (very dry). My son’s chair left him with a nasty stain on light coloured pants. Husband’s pastry cold in center. My son-in-law’s jaws are sore from chewing and swallowing the hard dry chicken and waffles. Good thing they supplied us with several bottles of COLD water, or we couldn’t have digested it all. Oh decor! pleasant. I’m Mad @ Rex down $134.+ “Birthday Brunch Beware”

Ok... if you are following my reviews this place gets a 5 ***** review for all the right reasons. The place just opened and it gets my 5 ***** Star review.... Here in Philly we don't have any Theme restaurants to speak of. MAD REX is worth the trip to check it out. What is MAD REX it is a place you can go back too many times and get a different experience each time you go. So much to see and talk about but I want to leave it up to you to write about what you see so go and check it out. MAD REX stands for Restaurant Entertainment Xperience Any seat you sit in is good BUT you will still have to get up and walk around to see everything. The food is good and the survivors menu is worth trying, Fish, Meat and chicken which you finish cooking at your table on a 700 degree flat rock. Comes with different seasonings to cook your food with. VERY INTERESTING concept. Prices are good for what you get .. entree' are priced from $20 to $28 Drinks for around $10.00 served in metal cups Bar scene is going to be interesting ... it will all depend on who sits at the bar around you and the conversation. The bar is kind of a round bar with a bartender in the middle and a seating area behind you. Visual reality area is on the left side in the back and and has a different way to serving you your drink... in what looks like an IV bag but is a (Camel bag) I watched the intro video and liked what I saw. Prices start at $2.00 a minute. The location is across the street from the Sugar House Casino. Park at the casino and walk across the street or park in the Filmore parking lot in the back. I WILL BE BACK !!!! Jerry Ehrlich from the Great City of Philadelphia

Great food and service....pricey....bad location for parking....close to the Filmore although I would not walk it.

Went before going to a show at the Fillmore next door. We split the burger, fries, and I also go a side salad. Some pita bread and hummus came out ahead of the meal and it was tasty. The fries were hand cut and savory and sweet with some brown sugar sprinkled on them which we found out after asking the waitress what seasoning they used for the fries. The burger had a good flavor as week as it was a beef blend burger. Looking at if for the outside we always thought it was just a bar and would have typical bar food but we want to go back and try the lava rock and Himalayan Salt Survivor menu items with some friends. It is a unique restaurant experience Philly if you are in the area before or after a show at the Fillmore /Foundry / Sugar House.

Ate here pre-Fillmore concert. It's worth coming in for a beer and checking out the Mad Max props which are well done. The food, was edible, not outrageous price, but certainly wouldn't come here for dinner outside the convenience of being next to the Fillmore. I did fish on the Survivor hot stone. Not all that dramatic with mediocre sauces on the side.

Terrible service. my friends all got their food and apparently mine was forgotten about. Waiter was all over the place-and definitely not tendent to our table, drinks, water, or food. Food is not great. Decor is neat. Virtual reality lounge-do not be mistaken, it definitely not a “lounge”-it’s a one person at a time thing-so get ready to wait in line.

Stopped in before a show next door and they asked if we reservations. NO we did not. They said they were booked for the night. The PLACE was empty... What we did notice is that most tables sit between 6 to 8 people so maybe sitting 2 people was not what they wanted. After the show we went over to the casino and had an awesome meal.

Enjoyed atmosphere. Really funky place! Steak was amazing. I didn’t realize that they. Ring it out and u cook it itself but it was slot of fun. Great experience. Great bartender and wsitery

Really cool atmosphere and a fun experience overall.. would like to come back with visitors from out of town or for a group outing.. we got the steak that we got to make ourselves on a lava rock and it was pretty good as well.. worth the trip!

I truly enjoyed my experience, service was great. My waiter did an amazing job of describing the menu, an giving the back story for the establishment. This was my 3rd vist to Mad Rex in a month, as the Menu is a smooreguesh board of choices. It's is a great place for a family dinner or business gathering as it has plenty of seating. The drink Menu is as most restaurants but with a twist, they have a seasonal drink menu that changes with the seasons. They have virtually reality rooms for kids and adults to enjoy. they also have a large projection TV showing movie's or sports games on it with some really cool airplane seats. go an check out Mad Rex you will not be disappointed.

Visually stunning restaurant. You must walk around and look at everything. The food is also killer. Best Mac and cheese I have ever had in a restaurant. Lamb chops cooked to perfection. Very generous beet portion. Loved all the artsy food and drink serving ideas. My smoked drink came out awesome. Our server/bartender Erica took time to show us different photos of the food and drinks before we made up our minds. She was so helpful and kind. Can’t wait to go back.

I like the fact that they grind different types of meats for their burgers but unfortunately mine had fat and grizzle that was chewy and I had to put it on my plate.... nice roll but unfortunately it was not totally fresh n at least a couple of days old... because of the quality factor in using the different types of meats I have ranked it as average

Had a dinner party for eight people on Saturday night 4/14. We were celebrating three birthdays. Our table was set up on the patio which was great because it was less noisy and it was a very warm evening. Our waitress was fantastic from the very beginning to the very end. She was enthusiastic, knowledgeable about the menu and gave us very efficient service. The only hiccup was one of our guests didn't get his meal at the same time as the rest of us and the staff (Including the mananger) were extremely apologetic. They felt so badly about this snafu, they gave us a round of free dirinks which made everyone happy. The food was beyond our expectations and everyone enjoyed both their meals and their cocktails. Very unique menu and decor. Afterwards we booked the virtual reality room and had a great time in there as well. Some of us ordered the special drinks and thought it was well worth the price. I would definitely return any day of the week. Thanks to the entire staff for making the birthdays so special!

A great culinary experience with wonderful attentive service; good food in a intriguing atmosphere of post apocalyptic decor. Highly recommend the hibachi hot stone grill experience. If you are looking for something outside the box-this is it!!

This a cool post apocalyptic restaurant. They had a variety of menu items. The service was a little slow and they forgot one person in our group's order. The food was good but not outstanding.

Well we went the day after Father's day. This is a take off on Mad Max/Road Warrior theme. Wonderful themed decor. Our waiter Dave was friendly, helpful and solicitous. Several other staff stopped by to make sure everything was good. Two of us had their burger and both were pleased. I had their vegan entree, just because, and it was colorful and tasty. Our soon to be daughter-in-law had a vegetable dish that she also enjoyed. I had a brew of their own making and I really enjoyed it. The young folks had mixed drinks that they enjoyed thoroughly. I would not hesitate to re-visit

My friend took me to this great restaurant and we had s blast!!! The food, ambiance, and service were great!!! The waiter and manager did everything they could to make sure we were happy and pleased with our visit! Loved the Survivor menu which offered a great variety and amount of food! We will definitely be back!!!!

Cool Mad Max decor can not overcome overpriced watered down drinks. Placed food order at 11:45 PM, told 20 minutes later that kitchen closed at midnight. WTF?

My friend asked me to go to this restaurant. When she described it I wasn’t sure expecting anything special. Man was I wrong! This place is AMAZING in every way shape and form. The decor is absolutely stunning and avant-garde! The food is out of this world...literally!!! I had the filet...Morton’s eat your heart out! It was melt in your mouth good. Drinks were exotic and smooth. Looking forward to my visit!

Let’s start off with the place had so many empty tables on a Saturday at 6pm, YET the hostess tells me they are booked. REALLY ? We sit at the bar and waited way to long just to order a drink and the bar was half full, just that the bar tender had a better conversation about work. I went to the bathroom and it was a mess. Paper everywhere on the floor. The smell of urine on the floor. The sink area looked as if someone took a bath as the water was all over the place. As I walked by the one booth on the way to the bar I over heard the 4 people talking about how bad the service is and the food taking so long to come out. 37 mins later, After getting a drink at the bar, we left to go eat at the casino across the street, as we walked out the same empty tables where just that EMPTY. It seems the management has changed again and this time not for the better. The girl at the Hostess checking was telling a couple that they only have tables available for people who made reservations. REALLY !!! What a joke. I told that couple to go to the casino across the street to eat and they did. I will NOT be returning to MAD Rex anytime soon even if I live right near by. There are so many other places to eat near by. What ever happen to the other managers and owner.... they seemed to care. Jerry Ehrlich from the Great City of Philadelphia

Stopped for a solo, Saturday mid-afternoon bite n beer. The decor is super cool and the burger was bomb. Totally cleaned the (license)plate

Over priced bull puckey. Poorly managed. It's a Saturday late afternoon 04/28/18 and they're out of 3 to 4 of the major brands of beer: Yeungling, Corona. They're out of a number of menu items as well. They seat 11 people at an 8 person table - while they rotate other tables to accommodate a larger party. The appetizers are over priced - you get 8 pretzel bites for $7 (at this rate, the movie theaters are a better option). Dessert - they were out of all the ice cream they have listed, except chocolate - I ordered waffles with the ice cream - turns out they're just Eggo waffles and a scoop of Turkey Hill for $8. The entire staff (including the "head chef") responds to a bathroom disturbance issue - security? The only thing that was good were the burgers, which I didn't have, and the restaurant decoration/flare which was all from Borderlands the FPS video game. As for video games, its $2 per minute for VR which is stupid considering they're all Oculus sets. The "service charge" is the equivalent of a %20 tip - it's cute how they add a tip line to your bill as well on top of it (which I found a little insulting, considering they struggle to separate checks and we had to wait for 25 minutes for our final talley). Save your money and go to Barcade or Franklin Hall up the street.

I finally made it and I must say I was surprisingly pleased either the outcome! The themed restaurant has paraphernalia that draws upon the movie 'Mad Max'..chain linked fences...weathered leather jackets...blah..blah I was there in time for happy hour..so we started with drinks and appetizers! The pita chips with the carrot purée and calamari were really much more tasty than anticipated! The entrees were the angus burger cooked on the stone and scallops-both we're succulent and delicious! What made the experience great was our waiter-he was attentive and patient! After dinner, we went to the virtual reality lounge! That was a fun time! The game charges $1/per minute! Overall, I would come back to hang out for drinks...the food is somewhat expensive!

We were looking for something different to do and decided to try Mad Rex. The restaurant and bar have an industrial/military vibe, very sharp and very cool. The VR area had great chairs and "IV" type drink dispensers so you can drink your favorite beverage while experiencing the lower action VR scenes. There is a very high tech high activity area. The technician helps the gamer quickly learn the basics and get into the action. Don't be put off by the $2 per minute charge. Each of us played 5-7 minutes which was plenty. It was great playing and fun to watch others play too. We will go back.
Great Bachelorette spot!
Stopped here after a Drag Show at Punchline. What a great day! This was the perfect follow up. So much to look at here. Absolutely loved the VR games. A little pricey but I think the price was appropriate for the setting. Depending what drinks you order you might get a cool little mixology presentation. Would definitely go again!
