Hot Pot!! Yum!!

By C T F |

Literally a hole in the wall - but the Hot Pot is worth the hunt! Great prices, plenty of food and plenty service.

Great Food, Great Value

By 2011glen |

For good Vietnamese food at a good price. We eat there about once a month. The atmosphere could use some updating but the staff is so nice and the food is very good. Never had a bad meal there. Lots of different flavors and a large menue to choose from. The clay pots are very good. The spring roles are the best especially with their peanut sauce. I love the wonton soup, it is different and very good also.

Love the Clay pots!!

Love the chicken clay pot with glass noodles and mushrooms. The chicken curry and rice is great also.Usually eat 1/2 and take half home.

Excellent dinner

By Nico R |

I understand some of the mixed reviews--my spring roll, butterfly shrimp and soup (part of the "dinner" I'd ordered) were undistinguished, but the Spicy Lemongrass Beef was fabulous. As were the clay pots, currys and Phos of my tablemates. Authentic and tasty! Important to know, Mai's is BYOB if you want to drink alcohol. Fortunately, other people in our party knew and brought a bottle of wine.

Good Pho

They have a primarily Vietnamese menu with traditional dishes. Service is very friendly and efficient. Good prices and food quality.

A neighborhood tradition for decades

I was introduced to Mai's by a neighbor about 15 years ago, and visit on a regular basis. It's a small, no-frills place but the quality is very reliable and the prices seem to NEVER go up. The imperial rolls, Vietnamese pancake and clay pot dishes are my favorites. Service is friendly and fast.

Yummy food, hole in the wall little place

By shayla o |

Started off with spring roll, was okay, had better. Ordered the curry clay pot and LOVED. I'm not a huge huge curry fan but it was awesome. If you are vegetarian, I'd opt out of getting tofu for just more veggies, in my opinion. Favorite dish though was on the back portion of the vegetarian section... description talks about "triangular" noodles with coconut curry. AMAZING

Clay Pots!

By riverboatrandy |

This restaurant and their delicious clay pot dishes were a staple for us for many years. We moved away from the area but still get back as often as possible. The way the rice cooks in the pot gives us food dreams. Please enjoy this little gem. Only reason its not 5 stars is because its just not very fancy and I know that's important to some folks. BYOB also which is a plus.

Delicious!

A neighborhood spot (rough area) but delicious fresh food. Try the imperial rolls, Curry Clay Pot and Spicy Chicken soup are excellent.

Good, basic fare.

We both ate the same food, I had large, my son had the med bowl. We love sprouts & didnt get nearly enough for 2 bowls. Nice spicy taste. Very simple restaurant, simple food. It was a good meal.

You will like it

Highly recommend. Very quick/easy w/ lots of great VN dishes. Note not necessarily a Pho House if that's what you are after. More a Clay pot, rice noodle, etc etc. All good and you can't go wrong only good, better, and best choices.

Awesome food!

My husband and I were wanting Asian cuisine. So I googled such and Mai's was the closest restaurant with already good ratings. We didn't regret our choice at all. The Wonton soup and Spicy Chicken Soup had great flavor. #43 noodles with chicken and shrimp and prepared medium spice was excellent. We actually order chicken fried rice to go so we can have dinner tonight. We will definitely be back to visit.

Amazing food in an interesting building

Mai's is one of our favorite restaurants in Dallas. You have to get the chicken spring rolls with peanut sauce and a 44a clay pot. We will continue to frequent.

Dinner

By Tina W |

If you want some really good Vietnamese food, this little hole-in-the-wall is a great place to being. Located on Bryan St in East Dallas, it doesn’t look like much on the outside, but the inside is well decorated and very clean. The menu features Pho, the quintessential Vietnamese soup which came with very fresh mint, jalapeño, cilantro, and bean sprouts to add to it any way you like. That is what I had and it was delicious. My friend had the Banh Mi Sandwich and he said it was very good and fresh but he was still hungry at the end so you might want to order a side dish to accompany your sandwich. They also offer dinners and other dishes. This was our first time here. There is a bar where they stock many beers and drinks. We will go back for sure!

A Wonderful Surprise

By MrMarcR |

We were just driving through the neighbourhood looking for a place to eat and found Mai's and decided to give it a try. We were not dissapointed. The rice hot pot was the best I've ever had, and the staff were so nice. I highly recommend this place if you're in the area.

Consistently wonderful!

I moved into the neighborhood 15 years ago and have been eating at Mai's for about 10 years and my only regret is not trying it sooner. The family is friendly and the food delicious. They do not have a beer & wine license so BYOB if you wish. I highly recommend the clay pot and the fried bananas. But you also have to try the spring rolls, cucumber salad, Vietnamese pancakes... Just go often and try it all! I would like it to be a bit spicier but it is Vietnamese not Thai so what should I expect? (The menu says they will make it spicy but it's not.)

Excellent Vietnamese food!

Been going to this place for years and each time am never disappointed. The pho is outstanding and the best when it's cold outside. Everything I've tried on the menu has been exceptional.

one of my all time favorites food is fresh and good prices and fast too

Authentic Vietnamese Food

By dbpotts |

The food here is very good, and from what I'm told, very authentic. Enjoy a Vietnamese Hot Coffee while you're there.

Nice Dinner

By Heide S |

Has Combination Curry Clay Pots, which were excellent. The food is extremely hot when served and stays hot in the pot. Put some on a little plate to let it cool. Also had friend spring rolls which were not the greatest. Service was good and very friendly. will go back.

It's all about the food!

By dalcap |

Not too fancy. Well, not fancy at all. But the food is so good. Great selection and lots of choices. Good for vegetarians as well as carnivores! Soups, clay pots, noodle dishes. The most difficult part is choosing which one to try. And that's why we keep coming back -- so so many good options. It's definitely on our short list of places to go for a really good meal.

Hidden Gem

By Michael C |

Most people who see Mai's humble exterior don't realize the quality of the food inside. This little unassuming joint is a Dallas treasure. Very reasonable prices, good portions and fresh food. You won't see this place advertised in the glossy mags about "where to go in Dallas", but that's good, actually. It's definitely the antithesis of "touristy". Try it, you'll like it!

You can find better

By meridith m |

Sorry....used to really like this place about 15 years ago but went back a few months ago and found it disappointing. Food doesn't taste authentic. Spring rolls were meager. Portions were fine. Just not worth another visit.

Was the best

I MISS THIS PLACE SO MUCH!!! This was a family owned business and my favorite place for over 30 years. I wish I even knew how to contact the owners.

An okay choice in the lunch rotation

By J Person |

I have eaten a couple times now at Mai's--all lunches. It is somewhat value-priced Vietnamese food . There is an okay lunch special, that offers a main course, plus your choice of a cup of soup, a cabbage/carrot/cucumber salad or stir fried vegetables. The soup is like a wonton broth, and the salad is nicely crunchy. The $8.50 special is okay--I had the #1 spicy lemon grass chicken most recently. It was reasonably flavorful (not too spicy), although the portion did not seem very large. I have also tried the spring rolls (non-fried) at $1.25-1.50 each, and they seemed fresh with good dipping sauce. I have also tried the pho, and the #10 Spicy chicken soup was very good. I will probably go back to the pho in the future. At $8.25 the "bowl" (not to be confused with the $9.50 jumbo bowl) is pretty good sized, with all the garnishes. Service is generally okay. I have had one instance where it was slow, but once they realized what had happened, they got the food out pronto. Not a destination kind of place, but still worth the occasional lunch.

Fantastic food

Visited Mai's restaurant with a group of friends and loved the experience. Having visited Vietnam last year, the food was fresh, authentic and delicious.

Until last night, it had...

By Culture76337 |

Until last night, it had been about 12 years since I had been to Mai's. The neighborhood has definitely changed, as has the interior (new chairs and light fixtures can do a LOT for a dining room); the food wasn't as amazingly wonderful as I remembered, though. Still cheap, good and you can BYOB or wine. PS--the reviewer below me says it is in Oak Cliff, but it is actually near the Lowest Greenville/Munger Place/Swiss Avenue area.

Not impressed

By Tom W. |

Had Mai's for lunch today and it was mediocre at best. The fried egg roll was almost inedible and the sauce didn't help at all. The spicy lemongrass chicken was just okay. Will not be back. Many other Viet restaurants with much better food around.

My Wife's favorite Vietnamese restaurant

By 957douglasb |

My Wife love Mai's but living in DC for 14 years, we rarely dined there. Our first time back recently and the food is still as amazing as when she first introduced it to me in early 2002. The staff are so friendly and ambience so beautiful.

Good Neighborhood Vietnamese Food

By 5016DAH |

Hidden gem of Vietnamese food in East Dallas. Across street from Jimmy's Italian Food Store. Small (and dark) restaurant. Very agreeable service. Good prices and good size portions. Pho soup is very good. Lots of repeat customers. Consistent good food. Closed Sundays.

Great Vietnamese food

By Susana G |

I love the Pho here. I get the spicy chicken soup and #2 Spring rolls with a Thai iced tea. The neighborhood surrounding is changing, so don't judge the place by the outside. It's clean and well run inside.

Best value Vietnamese Restaurant in Dallas

By d b |

Been going since 1990 and it still consistent in food quality and authentic flavors from Vietnam cuisine. The restaurant just went though a remodel which it did need but the food was still superb. There are very good Vegetarian options on menu..

My favorite place to eat on the planet

By TRoschelleT |

Mai's is wonderful. My family and I have been eating there for over 7 years and keep coming back for more! Mai and his family are very accomodating and the food is awesome, the atmosphere is relaxing, low key and has a neighborhood feel. If you are looking for a restaurant that is fancy, Mai's is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a restaurant that truly has remarkable food and that is reasonably priced, Mai's can't be beat. Their fried calamari "vietnamese style" is the best calamari I have ever eaten and I order it every time I eat at Mai's (I eat there at least 1 time a month). The tofu and shrimp spring rolls are fantastic, as well as everything else on the menu. I also order the vegetable soup with shrimp and tofu and extra noodle and it is also wonderful. Mai's is not a place to miss and experience.

Didn't get a chance to try it.

By Oblivion Light |

This is more of a customer service review. I walked in and stood there for 5 minutes. I wanted to give it a chance so I sat down for another 5 minutes. A lady was there and semingly working, but at the same time, refusing to acknowledge my presence. At a total of 15 minutes, I walked out as someone becan to unload product from a car. She then came out and started messing with the door and came out to bark orders at her help. I thought she was going to call me back in which I wanted to give her a chance to do so, but she let me get in my car and drive off. Went across the street to the Thai restaurant. In and out with delicious food. I guess Mai's isn't in business to make money. That was a very odd experience for me and I will not go there again.

A great place, but is a hit and miss...

By Cardhuneat |

the title might be confusing, but so are my experiences. My family and I like this place a lot, we have had plenty of good experiences here, but I guess if you go somewhere often enough, you will get a so-so experience. This is not in the best neighborhood in Dallas, however there are three great neighborhood places within the four quadrant of this intersection of Fitzugh and Bryan. This is a BYOB place, so you can stop over at Jimmy's Italian store catty-cornered to this place and get a great bottle of wine, or choose from a lot of beer options...bring it in and drink it down! One warning about this place...the Pho is a very large bowl and you will get your monthly supply of sodium with this dish...it is greatness though... We have been back and will go back...
