Dinner

By Stephen T |

Saw this restaurant as we entered Portland from the airport, and tried it as it was just a short walk from our hotel. What a find! Quaint corner trattoria with fun environment - and attentive waitstaff who are eager to talk you through their menu. We had lasagna and cioppino, split a dinner salad (large enough for 3!), and affogato and tiramisu for dessert. Delicious - and full for a day!

A very nice dinner

By CWtravels42 |

First time to Mama Mia's but we will be back. Our server Casey suggested a wine that was very good with our meal. I had the lasagna and my wife had the chicken picante. Both were very good.

Great Everything

By todb242 |

During our recent visit to Portland we decided to have dinner here. The place was busy but we only waited less than 10 min to get a table. Our server was great. She helped us choose our meals. Appetizers were huge. Great value. The Carbonara pasta portion could have been a little larger but was delicious none the less. Would definitely visit this place again.

Very nice!!

By David D |

My spouse and I were looking for a place to have lunch in the middle of downtown. With the rising problem of homelessness in this area coming to downtown, if you are not from around here can be quite unnerving. However, once inside we felt good and safe and had a great lunch: rock fish sandwich and a chicken salad. They were really were prepared and the french fries were soaked in garlic!!! That was unexpected, and a nice surprise!! Our waiter, Casey, was very attentive and we liked the ambience.... We will come back and recommend it. I wish all the business owners in downtown would push local authorities to deal with all of the mentally unstable and homeless people, I don't see how tourists can feel safe around this.

Mama Mia Yeah !

Good food , priced fairly , good service. Workable wine list -all in a cozy setting on the corner of 9th ave and 44st NYC

Nice Little Italian Restaurant!

By 265az82 |

We had arrived in Portland very late on a Sunday night. Fortunately for us, Mama Mia's was open for business! The restaurant is small, which would be perfect for an intimate Italian dinner. The restaurant exudes a great Italian restaurant vibe! The server (wish I could remember her name) was very friendly and attentive. The manager, too, was very friendly and concerned with our dining experience. My wife and I had a shared a pizza and the fried artichoke hearts, which were both delicious. My only regret was that we didn't have time to go back for a full-size dinner option before we left. We'll definitely be back. Nice place. Keep it up!

Nothing Spectacular

By Megalodean |

The food was okay, not bad, but nothing to rave about. The service wasn't great, we waited for a long time with empty drink glasses (there were only two other tables with people at them). The food is good, but I was expecting more for the price. The atmosphere is nice and romantic. They have great wine.

Delicious lasagna

By cmc-llc |

My husband and I both had the lasagna and we both felt it was one of the best we’ve had. We had wonderful service also.

Birthday dinner

By Hansel S |

Friends who live in Portland brought me here for my birthday. The service from beginning to end was amazing. Drinks selection is very good. There were 10 of us at the table, each dinner that arrived looked, smelled and tasted amazing from the expressions on everyone's face. Would definitely go here again

Portland Dining Month at Mama Mia!

By CVuong |

Came in as a group of 7 today to try out their Portland Dine Out menu. Lots of choices and lots of food! Entree portions were large - almost everyone packed home part of their meal. Everything tasted good but I would say the most memorable item we ordered was off the regular menu. Give the fried zucchini a try!! Our server was great. Very attentive but not overbearing. One of our entrees came out well behind the rest and our server offered a free take home dessert for us. Mama Mia also offers free delicious house bread with olive oil and balsamic on your table to so that you can make your own dip. We were offered a choice between house bread and garlic bread to start and chose the garlic bread; however, I was a little disappointed at the fact that we weren't told there was an upcharge for it. All in all, the menu selection was very nice, the ambiance of the restaurant was fun and inviting and I would say we got good value for our money here.

Real italian food

By nine52 |

With some italian music you can eat good pasta the italian way. The service is excellent and waiters are nice and efficient. Plenty of parking places around.

Excellent!

By Trbear |

Loved our happy hour visits here. The choices and prices are fantastic, and the food quality and service are top flight. Wonderful garlic bread, minestrone, and arugula salad. The manicotti is delightful, and so is the lasagna. All the deserts we tried were terrific, especially the tiramisu, and lemon torte. Thanks to the great servers for making our times here special. Recommended.

No happy hour after 6

By Jonbatch |

Ignore their website and published happy hour articles, happy hour now ends at 6. Good wines by the glass, no cheap apps and menu high for standard Italian fare.

Classic Italian in an old-timey atmosphere

By Karl B |

Mama Mia's is another restaurant in downtown Portland with an appealing throwback atmosphere, in this case highlighted by numerous chandeliers. The food was generally good, the portions were huge, and the service was attentive. Appetizer meatballs were excellent. Fettuccine Bolognese was very good. Lasagna was huge but oddly pasty and I would not recommend.

Delicious Meal in a Great Atmosphere

By Willie G |

Had dinner with a friend from Portland who suggested Mama Mia's when I told him I love Italian. He, a vegetarian, had the manicotte. I had prawns and pasta scampi recommended by our waiter which was excellent. Way to full for dessert and my friend took almost half his dinner home with him. Loved the location downtown and the old building interior was beautiful and well-maintained.

Disappointed dinner

By Will_Travel |

Full disclosure: we are from Texas. I hope this is why the flavors were so disappointing. The breading on the fried mozzarella and chicken parmigiana had a sweet under flavor. The red sauce was delicious however the flavors did not compliment each other. We left the restaurant disappointed.

La felicita

By hidden1 |

Cool old world ambience. My seafood pasta was A-mazing. Typically with that sort of dish I end up with all my seafood gone and a big bowl of pasta left. Had the opposite experience here. There was so much seafood I couldn't eat it all and each piece was extraordinarily well-prepared and seasoned. And the amaretto cheesecake made by their in-house pastry chef? Just.... Wow. Our server Nick was very helpful and attentive and made us feel completely welcome. Downtown Portland is expensive in general but this place is a good value for what they serve. Highly recommend.

Very Good Italian Food

By cohoman |

My family had dinner here on a Saturday evening, and the atmosphere and wait staff were great. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and my wife got the manicotti. We also ordered some fried mozerella cheese (freshly made there). The food was well prepared and tasted very good. It seems this restaurant uses freshly made pasta with there meals and you can taste it! Call for a reservation to make sure you can get a table. The cost is a bit pricey, but worth it if you're visiting downtown Portland.

Food not so good and prices steep

By rtfax |

Friendly staff but that is where it ends. Food was mediocre for this place and price, Pasta had tasteless sauce and not quality pasta. Not expected with the name they have. Also the veal parmigiana was small, chewy and not very tasty. We are out of state visitors and would recommend you avoid this place.

One portion was enough to feed two or three people easily.

By Laurene M |

Humongous portions at this restaurant a very traditional Italian American food. The eggplant Parmesan came with the choice of spaghetti and other sides. There was enough to feed three people. The Caprese salad was also delicious.

Not italian

By ploprete101 |

Dinner was eggplant Parmesan and veal piccata. Parmesan came to our table blackened and burned. Piccata was like gravy syrupy and thick. Spagetti pomodora was like canned spagetti. Way over sauced and over cooked. Worst Italian we’ve had in years. Only thing good was the caprese salad. Manager did compensate our terrible dinner so kudos to him but he needs to hire a new chef quickly.

Husband said it was the best

By Tim C |

This is such a cute place. It was romantic with great food. We love italian and this is a place we will come back to. If your looking for a great dinner this is it. The pasta was amazing and so fresh tasting. If you don't enjoy this place you have something wrong with you.

Pleasant surprise

By europhile188 |

My wife and I ate at this restaurant 15-20 years ago, when it was not noteworthy. It is now. A new owner took over about a year ago. We had a knowledgeable and conscientious waiter who was a pleasure. He made excellent picks for my wife's wine (a Willamette Vally Pinot, of course) and my beer (too many local micros to keep tabs). We each had a great pasta dish after a nice starter plate of spicy meats and pickled veggies. We were too full for dessert, but we'll be back when we next visit Portland.

Mama's Pizza

By Myles U |

Stumbled on Mama Mia Trattoria after a walking tour of Portland and had an nice pizza and wine dinner. The "bottle" of wine turned out to be a full liter carafe which was a bonus.

Two hits and a few misses

By Steigenberger592 |

We were in the mood for Italian and chose Mama Mia based on its Tripadvisor ratings and nearness to our hotel. Overall, the experience was very good although there was a problem with two of the dishes. We started with the fried zucchini which was outstanding. The zucchini were coated with a light, crispy breading and dusted with pecorino romano cheese. It came with a nice aioli and an OK pomordoro sauce (although it would have been better with a more flavorful marinara sauce). The cioppino was very good, with generous amounts of shrimp, calamari, scallops, mussels, clams and white fish in a flavorful sauce. However, some of the mussel shells had chipped leaving small fragments in the broth. This made for rather unpleasant eating of the broth once we'd finished the fish. The veal scallopini alla marsala was advertised as "Thin slices of milk-fed veal sautéed with fresh mushrooms in a delicate marsala wine sauce" While the veal was pretty tender, it was by no means thin slices, making for a somewhat disappointing mouth feel. The mushrooms were more chunks than slices and the sauce was much thicker than we have had elsewhere. In short, not one of the best veal scallopinis we've had. We thought of giving Mama Mia a "very good"rating" but on reflection, it deserved an "average" based on the scallopini and the mussel shells.

Excellent food

By Lorraine J |

Had Chicken parm and spinach. It was delicious. Husband had Lasagna very good. Salad and soup very good. Service was excellent. Bread not offered and that seemed strange in an Italian restaurant. All good would recommend..

Happy hour with lots of Italian atmosphere and food

By Michael A |

We go to Mama Mia's regularly because it's just off the beaten path of Downtown and they are known for the best happy hour in Portland. Skip the insanity so you don't have to wait and wait for a table. The menu is large for happy hour in terms of selection and portion sizes. We are never disappointed. This is the home of comfort food served by lovely, caring people. We sat at the bar tonight and Rachael served up generous pours of house Bolla red. We especially love the Caesar salad, minestrone soup, meatballs, and lasagna. They give you a complementary basket of bread, too. It was freezing cold and windy outside, but warm and inviting inside. Thank you, Mama Mia.

Typically "Italian" American

By JillianG |

Italians be warned: This is NOT going to taste like home. Sure, maybe it will remind some Americans of having Friday night spaghetti suppers with our grandmothers, but please, Italian it is not. The pasta was - in all American fashion - mushy as can be, which of course meant that the sauce (a super sweet marinara or tasteless bolognese in our group's case) didn't have a hope of penetrating the noodles... not that you would really want it to. I think my blood pressure increased just because of the amount of salt I had to use to be polite enough to choke down enough food.

Great place for pasta dinner

By Azure604 |

We were visiting Portland, and after doing the brewery thing the night before, we were looking for something different. Then we found this little gem with great pasta and wine. The seafood linguine, shrimp capellini, gnocchi and even the gluten free pasta were all delicious and well prepared. We were seated fairly quickly without having made a reservation and our waiter was great. All around great dinner experience.

Very very average

By phixy31 |

I was recommended to go hear. The food was warm to cold. Lacks flavour. Save yourself and go somewhere else in Portland. Not happy at all.

Good food, service was a bit slow

By Heather w |

They were not busy, a couple of tables were eating and one other group showed up after us. Took a while to get drinks after ordering, food ordering was slow..... while dinner tasted great.... just know it's a little pricy for what you got.

Great Italian dinner

By Susan D |

Enjoyed dinner with my husband and son while visiting Portland. My husband had the Steamed Clam Appetizer & Salmon with Risotto. My son had the Fried Mozzarella & Potato Gnocchi. I had a Salad and Chicken Picatta. All were delicious! Restaurant ambiance is nice, but they were playing indian music which we thought was kinda weird. other than that I would highly recommend.

Nice Italian Spot - Great service!

By Randy L |

We enjoyed the charcuterie antipasti and several pastas. The linguine carbonara with a poached egg on top was fantastic as was the fettucine bolognese. This place will be on the top of our list next time we are in town. Service was great and very attentive throughout our meal.

Good portions, good food, good atmosphere

By Goinggoingandout |

This is one of my favorite cozy places to eat in Portland. The food is delicious, at least the menu items I have tried. The atmosphere isn't too loud and the cost is very moderate. I recommend becoming a member of the VIP club because who doesn't love free garlic bread! Also they have some pretty good promos via email. Not sure if they are available if you don't sign up.

Authentic Italian food

By Kathrin R |

The food at Mama Mia is superb. We tried several vegetarian dishes and they were all imaginative, rich in flavour and contained the best ingredients. Service was friendly and helpful. To top the meal off, a fine selection of excellent desserts was offered.

Excellent but pricey

By DBM |

The food was EXCELLENT! However, it was very expensive for the size portions they serve. My pasta was $27 for barely 1-1/2 cups of food. Bread was $8! We were visiting Portland and live in a major city where restaurant prices are not low. However, for $27 pasta I would generally be served enough where I can take some home or am at least contemplating whether I should finish because I am full. LOL. At Mama Mia I definitely didn’t have to worry about that.

Xmas Eve dinner

Dinner very avergae

By Philip H |

Food had to be sent back. Quality very average. Definitely not a place I would suggest to show case 'portland' My food was cold in the middle and stopped eating. Do not go hear unless you like average food.

Great Breakfast

Pleasant restaurant, was crowded but were seated very fast. Food was delivered without delay and mea tasted great and presented very well.

Stellar Service Can’t Overcome Overpriced, Bland Food

By Katelyn S |

This place came highly recommended and I had high hopes... but I was very disappointed. The service was great, though! I went with three friends and we split a great bottle of wine - an Oregon Pinot Noir - which was the only saving grace of the meal. The caesar salad had very little dressing on it, and when I did get a bite that was more than romaine, the flavor was very anchovy-forward. The manicotti was burnt, and the bolognese had a very bland flavor profile. The seafood pasta was the most disappointing dish of all, as almost all of the seafood was severely overcooked. The clams were ok, but the calamari went beyond rubbery and verged on plastic, the scallops were tough, the fish was dry, most of the mussels shells were empty and when I finally found them, they were thumbnail-sized, and the shrimp were flavorless and rubbery. The creamy herb sauce was also lackluster. I eat a lot of Italian food, and between the inflated prices and uninspiring food, this was among the most disappointing experiences I’ve had.

Great Italian food!

By jesslbarfield |

Absolutely DELICIOUS Italian food! This place was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. Sooooo yummy! The atmosphere and staff were great, also. Would definitely go back!

Glad for the appetizers

By karol452 |

They have Mama's happy hour everyday from 4 -6pm. You can choice from the menu. The price ranges from $3USD to $6USD. So some items are more than others. I had the Bruschetta which was $3.00 and the Beef Lasagna which was $5.00. I did not like either. I found the Lasagna had a lot of meat not much noodles. The Bruschetta had to much garlic for me. The service was good.

Disappointed...

By EdE |

Four of us had dinner, appetizers calamari, garlic bread and salads came out in 5 minutes, which was surprisingly fast, made me wonder if the calamari was pre-cooked and warned prior to serving. I had the gnocchi with bolognese. Though these were supposed to be fresh, pan searing them made them very dense and stiff, sort of the opposite of what I would expect. The sauce meat was OK, but it was not hot in temperature so it was not enjoyable over-all. Thr other 3 diners didn't make any comments about their dishes so I took that to mean that they were unremarkable. Not likely to come back.

Good food!

By Fordfam66 |

Good food, but small portions. I'm accustomed to large portions at Italian Restaurants. Service was spectacular and quick seating at lunch time.

Great Lunch Spot

By Frugal Barrister |

Stopped in off the street from a walking tour of downtown Portland. Very nice establishment. Hostess and server were very polite and prompt. Good recommendations on the menu and places to go in Portland. The Caesar salad with Blackened Shrimp was wonderful. I would order the Romaine chopped the next time, but that on Barrister for not asking. It was great. A taste of the craft beer list was a full quarter glass and the Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale was top drawer. 👍👍👍👍👍from the Frugal Barrister.

Great Dinner

By Ridgefield_Gates |

Went here for my daughter’s 18th bday. We had reservations and were seated as soon as we arrived. Food was great - highly recommend for Apps - fried calamari and fried Mozzarella! Both delicious. No complains all around - Fettuccine Alfredo, Veal Parm, Spag and Meatballs, Manicotti and Seafood Pasta. All great and service was also very good!! Best Italian I have had in the Portland Metro area.

Good Italian food

By NinaMama123 |

Celebrated my teen daughters birthday with a couple of her friends. The food was really good and it was a nice atmosphere. The prices were reasonable for the size of the meals.

Way too noisy

By nrkmann |

This used to be a nice place to take the wife for a quiet dinner. Not any more, it has been invaded by the novo-important (so they think). The quality of the food has slipped, and the price increased.

This is Italian!

By joanstein1964 |

My family and I enjoy Mama Mia's whether it's before a show, or a birthday it's delicious. We have gluten free diner that can enjoy the dining experience which says a lot in the land of fresh pasta.

Pasta for Dinner

By Hardrocker8888 |

I wanted pasta for dinner so I ate here. I had reservations so I was quickly seated. The restaurant was pretty busy for a Friday night. I had the chicken Marsala with a side of pasta. My dishes were delicious. It felt like the staff was new. But everyone was friendly and helpful:

What a meal! Family of four with one Gluten intolerance. Our server was great. Food was great! We had appetizers, mains, and desserts. Wonderful!

Incredible Italian Flavors

By NWreviews |

We have dined here a few times over the past 3-4 years. on Saturday, we wanted to have dinner before a performance at the Keller auditorium and made reservations for 2. Not sure why folks' reviews express frustration over their happy hour menu not being served in main dining room .. we've had dinners in main dinning room as well as at the bar (limited to happy hour) .. both excellent - it is their policy & honestly not a big deal considering they offer some of the best Italian food in Portland with decent portions as well. Marinara sauce & daily fresh pastas are delicious. garlic bread .. incredible. Besides their spaghetti & meat balls, not many places serve veal around here but these folks have 3 veal dishes that are OUTSTANDING. Our delightful waitress, Stephanie, suggested I go with the Veal Marsala - wow .. it was awesome. They recently had a price increase ... look around, most restaurants have done the same thing due to hourly rate hikes. Our reservation was for 6:00 PM .. the place was totally packed by 7 PM .. strongly suggest you make a reservation.

Lived up to its review

By Deb B |

Had an enjoyable time eating fried mozzarella, spaghetti and meatballs, and lasagna. Many other options were on the menu but we went traditional and enjoyed every bite.

Awesome customer service and amazing food.

By katiezhukova |

Great atmosphere, our server Ryan was awesome!Food was delicious especially fried mozzarella!! Definitely a great place!!

Ok for a quick lunch

By Alex C |

The restaurant was empty, which unfortunately does not create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our waitress was attentive. The food was Italian - filling and satisfying.

Pleasantly surprised

By Isunwin |

This is a great restaurant. We did not need a reservation. Greeted and immediately walked to our table. This is a pretty restaurant with elegant chandeliers throughout. It is located in downtown Portland. We took a Lyft from our hotel, but I believe there is a parking lot across the street. Our server was friendly and introduced us to the menu. She recommended the fried mozarella, and she was not wrong. It was delicious! For my main course, I had spaghetti with a pomodoro sauce and it was excellent. My mom had a bowl of minestrone which she described as "good soup." Free bread basket of focaccia was also served. Very reasonably priced and I would definitely come back if I lived in the area.

fresh and delicious

By linda m |

Our meal consisted of four different items and every one of them was well seasoned, hot and plentiful. Since we love leftovers, I was thrilled there would be a wonderful meal for us the next day.

Our Anniversary Dinner

By TravelBGS |

Order what they suggest! Osso Bucco was excellent and so was the gnocchi with pesto. Cannoli are baked fresh daily and filled when you order (which is the proper way to do cannoli). Also, free glasses of champagne for our anniversary! Neither one of us could finish our main course and shared the cannoli (two small ones - so perfect to share).

Great for a date

By Carl R |

Granted, the service is a bit spotty but the place, on the edge of Old Town (NW) is quaint. The building is old and romantic inside. The chicken Marsala was very good. The Caesar salad was perfection. $11.00 per glass for the house Chianti was a bit high, but we paid it and enjoyed it. Nice place for a date. We had previously been to happy hour there. Paid parking is across the street. Will most definitely return.

Mama Mia, taste of home!

By Carol N |

Only a few blocks from Hotel Rose, we were advised to try Mama Mia. We went there hungry, towards the end of happy hour. We had mimosas and sampled many delicious dishes, including meat lasagna, homemade linguine and sauce, mussels in tomato sauce, salad, and scrumptious garlic bread. It was all very homemade tasting. A great discovery. And reasonably priced, too!

Great place in town for Italian. The homemade fettuccine bolognese was amazing. Atmosphere was warm and friendly, we didn’t feel rushed as we all sat, ate and shared memories of years past over amazing food!

Excellent Meal and Service

By Laura T |

It's an interesting old building with excellent Italian food (large portions) and excellent service. We split a salad and had lasagna and gnocchi for our entrees plus beers.

Delightful and pleasurable

By Ofdogsandhumans |

same owner chef as Mother's, same original yet classic atmosphere and menu. A delight and pleasure to eat there

Great atmosphere, friendly staff

By Nick D |

Mama Mia is a cool spot. You can have a quiet meal with associates or they can section off half the restaurant for your party that they can serve with a great staff. The pizza is great.

Wonderful experience!

By mroland61 |

Very cool place. Love the atmosphere with friendly faces and cool decor. More importantly the food was excellent. Spaghetti with meat balls was fresh, hot and very tasty. Salad crisp with fabulous vinaigrette. Desserts also wonderful. Highly recommend 💚

A holiday tradition

By Attolia |

We have been coming here with my two children (now 11 and 13) for 8 years on Christmas Eve and it is always fantastic. The food is delicious, the decor is that old school italian style fancy which is perfect for Christmas Eve. The service is so friendly - it is never stuffy.

Do not recommend

By cantinucci |

This is NOT Italian cuisine/food the food is bland no taste, this is Italian American food which is as far away from Italian cuisine you can imagine there are many other places in Portland serve way better Italian cuisine and the service is as if they are doing me a favor, do not recommend

Nice Location

By Tippegirl2 |

This is a good choice when looking for a downtown restaurant.. The restaurant is dark and has an old feel. Neither he restaurant or workers made you feel welcome. Four of us dined and had mixed reviews. We all had pasta and 2 said average and 2 said very good.

Nice Find

By LT |

We found this place while we were walking and decided to make a reservation for dinner. We were greeted with a smile and had a nice table. Food was lovely, portions large so we shared. Service was great. Hope to go back next time in Portland!

Great food!

By wellwhateverfor |

Server, ambience, and food were great. The antipasti was delicious and all four of our entrees were superb. Four instead of five stars because the cocktails weren't as good as I would expect for an otherwise amazing place.

No photos; too busy chatting and eating

By Dennis M |

I forgot to take photos here because the conversation and food were so engaging. Mama Mia's ambience in the old Waldo Building is wonderful - spacious but intimate. Although we were a party of seven, an odd number with a bunch of separate checks - we were cheerfully served. It took a while to receive our entrees, but I think that was because nothing came out of a can. I was glad I couldn't finish my entree, because I snacked the next day on wonderful leftover chicken parmigiana and pasta. Not only do I recommend Mama Mia to TripAdvisor readers who don't know who the heck I am, but I would send my friends there, too, knowing they would enjoy the place.

Italian Downtown Portland

By Scenic588295 |

Great location if you are downtown. Quick seating with no reservation. Decent wine list, lots of choices on menu. The service was really great. Very attentive and friendly. The pasta I had was not very flavorful. The appetizer was amazing and the processo was delish!

Lovely food in a great environment

By mrsamos2015 |

A nice quiet place for dinner after work with not being romantic. Food was lovely and good portion size. Would recommend for adults.

I love the lobster! So delicious!!! clarified garlic butter and a basket of garlic bread with chx parmigiana.MONTE BELLA!!!!

Pretty good!

By Ann H |

After a slow start (our table was forgotten by the server) Mama Mia's delivered pretty decent food. The serving sizes were plentiful. My husband ordered chicken parmesan but was disappointed as the noodles were cold and chicken over done. I had the salmon with risotto which was delicious. The wine was excellent that accompanied my meal. The tiramisu was a huge portion and VERY good. Gary said the Ameretto cheesecake was the best part of his meal. The server gave me a complimentary dessert ( cannolis) for not attending to us at the beginning of our arrival.

Great service, warm atmosphere, hearty food

By Reattig |

We went to Mama Mia's as a fall-back lunch option when a place we had intended to go to was closed on a Monday. It turned out to be a truly pleasant discovery: Mama Mia's had a nice warm vibe, the servers were extremely friendly and patient, and the food, notably the meatballs and the parmesan chicken, was hearty and good. This is a restaurant where everyone, the owner, the kitchen staff, the servers, seem to be making a concerted effort. If you're in downtown Portland, it's worth a visit.

Great Italian food

By rsp0056 |

We had the Lasagna and the Cioppino and both were wonderful. The service was good and they were very attentive to whatever we wanted or needed.

Classic Italian

By Tom R |

We started with calamari. It was crispy, cooked appropriately, and came with 2 sauces. A good start. For our entrees, we had the veal parmigiana and arribiatta pasta. The veal was cooked good and crispy in some places. The pasta could have been a little more spicier. Service was good. Overall- enjoyable meal.

Mama Mia...a truly delicious treat for the tastebuds

By randune23 |

I really don't know where to begin?! From the cute corner spot this restaurant holds in downtown Portland to the amazing atmosphere once you step inside. We were with a group of 10 and we had called ahead for a reservation. It was not overly busy and they sat us right away. Some of our group ordered a bunch of appetizers and some of us ordered meals and just shared around the table. It was an amazing taste and tour of Italy. The staff all were very friendly and helpful. Even though we were all pretty full, the staff brought out a Cannoli with a candle in it for one of our guests whose 40th birthday was on the day we were there. We ended up ordering Lemon Torta, Flourless Belgian Torte, and Amaretto Cheesecake. All in all, this was my favorite restaurant on our trip. I am so glad we walked the numerous blocks to get to this little gem. Thank-you Mama Mia and all your staff.

Good meal

By Karen u |

Went with a group of friends. Service good, food good-not great. The gluten free option was helpful and good. Overall good experience, but not sure I would rush back.

Great food

By Tatyana K |

We stopped for a quick snack and martinis. Fried mozzarella was perfect, meatballs were so good that I keep dreaming about them ever since we had them there. We enjoyed the antique decor and great location which is close to shopping. We will definitely be back soon.

Cold pasta!!

Concert and dinner with my daughter

By Marlys D |

My daughter and I came here for dinner before a Wednesday night concert ,We had a reservation but we were two of 6 people there at the time. Good food bad service.

Nice Dinner Spot

By pinkwarrior72 |

Decor is a bit gaudy, but everything is very clean and staff is friendly. Service was good. Prices reasonable. House bread (supposed to be focaccia?) is OK. Food was good but they add cream to many sauces, unnecessarily. Pesto and bolognese are things of beauty. They should not be messed with.

Potato Gnochi was excellent

By julievannette |

My friend was in town and we decided to give this place a try. I ordered the potato gnochi with pesto, and it was delicious. My friend ordered the spaghetti and commented that it was good. The service was excellent, and I was very pleased with my potato gnochi and would order it again. My only disappointment was the pricing; menu is a bit over priced.

Went for Portland Dining Month--$29 3 course meal

By Dana97219 |

We like to try new places, we have not been to before, for Portland Dining Month. My husband loves Ciopino and that was one of the entrees they were offering. Per him, it was good but not the best he has had. Not enough broth to the soup, so the seafood was getting a bit dried out. We both started with the Caesar salad, and while I do like when it is served with the Romaine lettuce pieces still whole, they did have way too much dressing on the salad and beyond too much garlic in the dressing. I had the Chicken Parm, and it was good and plentiful. 3 pieces of chicken and I brought 2 home as leftovers. My husband had the better dessert, flourless dense chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet. I had the custard, and it was light and refreshing but it was not chocolate. The vibe in the restaurant was fine. I think they could use some background music to make it feel more Italian.

Delicious and delightful!

By iknowquality |

Very, very good. We were in for a late lunch on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Hubby had the minestrone soup and chicken parm and I had the chicken wrap. Chicken in both dishes was all white breast meat - moist and fresh. Everything tasted homemade and made to order. Bread was good. Service was good. Everything was good and we'd go back when visiting Portland again.

Needed Red Sauce/Gravy Meal. Found it!

By travel1081 |

Began with a small service glitch, but the staff made it all better and then some ++! Very good beer (tap) selection and wines. Our meal was eggplant parmigiana, side of spinach oil/garlic & gnocchi. The gnocchi was pan seared as well and the sauce (my choice was bolognese) with some melted mozzarella. The red sauce and the prep for the eggplant was Excellent. Service throughout the meal was really good. The owner/manager stopped by as well. Excellent choice for dinner! Would recommend.

Great Pasta

By Richard P |

Terrific restaurant! Had the homemade fettuccine with sauce and meatballs. Delicious! Would recommend this restaurant for anyone staying in downtown Portland and would like some good Italian food and nice atmosphere.

Love the food.

By Quilter707 |

My friend and I stopped in here for dinner not knowing anything about the restaurant. It was a cold, rainy night and the warm atmosphere made us feel right at home. The Caesar salad was amazing. Don't order it if you're not a fan of garlic, which I am. The gnocchi with pomodoro sauce and housemade mozzarella was delicious. My friend had fettuccine which she loved. Jenny, our waitress was great. Very attentive. We will be back!

Dinner with an attitude...

By Blowhole808 |

Recommended by the doorman at the hotel...easy walk from the hotel...this is by far the best restaurant in PORTLAND...make reservations if you have the time otherwise the wait can be painful, but worth it...menu items feature 'comfort' food like your mom would make...the portions are over sized so bring an appetite...service is attentive and professional...the setting is funky...tables set up is rather 'close' so privacy can be iffy...order the meatloaf...it's their signature item...ENJOY!!!

High on my list of Italian restaurants.

By Eugene F |

I have always had good service and food here and will continue to patronize this restaurant. I'm partial to the veal and have never been disappointed. The menu is comprehensive and the prices are appropriate for this type of restaurant.

Pricey, but delicious!

By ShadySpot |

Great Italian restaurant in downtown Portland. Easy to access on the TriMet rail system. The food was delicious. I had a nice house salad, with their homemade dressing. My entre was the prawns scampi with fresh linguine . The prawns were locally sourced. My entire party really enjoyed their food. I also had the cannoli which I took back to the hotel to eat later. The food was pricey for this country lady, but the food was delicious.

Start your trip off right

By TTK1231 |

After a long day of travel, we were ready for a hearty meal to begin our exploration of PDX. Lemon Drop martini is one of the best I have had. All fresh Italian food with amazing service and attention to detail. Save room for dessert. It is worth the full meal because you will find yourself walking it off the rest of your stay.

Dinner after a long day

By 359arlenes |

Wonderful gnocchi with pesto sauce. Quiet with good service. Parking is at least a block away. One step up to get into the building. Wonderful antique decor.

Worst meal in years

By Ann r |

We ate at this restaurant many years ago and were looking forward to another great meal. Soooo disappointing! The food was subpar and cold. I had chicken Marsala. The sauce was like glue. My husband had spaghetti and meatballs. They claim the pasta is homemade NO. The sauce was salty and the meatballs were like rocks. And the prices ridiculous based on the quality The staff was accommodating minus the hostess who was rude and inappropriately dressed. The Mama Mia’s of the past is sadly gone. Avoid it !!

Garlic Bread and Chicken Parmagiana

By T G |

We came here thinking we needed a couple of appetizers before dinner. Wrong. The Chicken in the Parmagiana was so big, my family could barely eat it. They give a small bowl of spaghetti, but just had a bite or two. I had a great bowl of spaghetti and we all shared a pizza. We were stuffed. Everything was really good and the servers were great!

A most enjoyable meal

By 531madelinem |

The restaurant has great atmosphere. The staff was efficient and friendly. The salad was super fresh then very good bread. The pasta pesto was just right. It was fresh and not heavy!

Good Italian Food In Downtown Portland

By Bob G |

Easy restaurant to walk to from many downtown hotels. Good menu, full bar, excellent service, reasonably priced.

Decent Italian food and strange service

By Lynne C |

We had dinner with friends at Mama Mia on a Saturday evening. Our reservations were at 6:30 and we were seated immediately. The restaurant gradually filled up during our stay, but I don't think they were at full capacity when we left, which is unusual for a Portland restaurant on a weekend. We loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It has an authentic Old World feel. The tables are set at a comfortable distance, conducive for conversation. It took quite a while for us to get our drinks, but our entrees were delivered fairly quickly. Our server said the right things, but all of us thought he was strange, almost "zoned out." We had to repeat everything we said to him and he came back once to clarify one of our orders. My husband ordered the arabiata and said it was wonderful. I had the cioppino and thought he seafood was generous and well prepared. The sauce seemed a bit heavy for the dish and it was not one of the better tomato sauces I have had. Our friends were able to find vegan dishes that they enjoyed. Our table split a flourless chocolate torte, which everyone thought was wonderful, and a panina cotta, which was too runny. The restaurant was out of zeppole, which was our first preference. With all of the restaurant choices in Portland, I don't think we would go back to Mamma Mia.

Great food

By reddogsailor |

Stopped by this quaint little place on a business trip for dinner. Chose it because it was close to the hotel and no disappointments. The food was great the service was great and prices very reasonable. Nice atmosphere, if you are visiting Portland and looking for a great place to eat don’t pass this place. Stop in and stay for a while.

Birthday lunch

By Paul L |

We were in Portland for first time, and my wife wanted a veal Parmesan(her favorite) For her birthday, after surfing we found that Mama Mia had it on their lunch menu. Everything was excellent, to the exception of the veal Parmesan, good but not great, a little on the chewy side. We overlooked it, due to everything else being great. Mussels appetizer in a shallot wine sauce Seafood pasta, clams, fish, prawns, mussels in a light garlic creamy sauce The rose wine from Oregon, very good The Pozole dessert, Italian donuts, withalmond chocolate sauce, excellent. All in all very good meal, and very good service. We recommend ! Paul R Laskar

Nice meal

By Michelle F |

Huge portions, everything tasted great with good drink options. Even the apps are huge. We had fried calamari that was tasty, crunchy and not chewy at all, the bruschetta board was SO yummy. We split an entree and it was still so much food for each of us. Would definitely go again!

Fantastic service

By Barb F |

Ate here with a large group and didn't have any complaints! Service was fantastic and very accommodating. Food was good too!

taking avantage of March restaurant month

By lougee1043 |

Met friends downtown to take advantage of special price fixed menus ---first time here and its a very popular restaurant ---- salad - entree and dessert all for 29.00 per person-- food and drinks always taste better when you are sharing a meal with good friends -- caesar salads ---2 osso buco - one chicken Parmesan and one pasta dish for the vegetarian --cannoli's and coffee for dessert --- a very extensive regular menu with attentive professional service -- not crazy about going downtown and looking for a sparking space but this restaurant is worth it

Great spot for lunch or dinner!

By MarkMaxPayne |

This has been my go-to choice once a week for lunch for over a year now. I've surveyed the menu and everything is truly delicious. They even have a great off-menu Caprese Salad that is really good. Its location doesn't afford it much foot traffic, but it is well worth the walk one block east towards the riverfront.

Okay in a pinch

By Skeslack |

We stopped here for dinner the weekend of the Bluesfest and July 4th. While they were busy, it was not a long wait and the entire staff was aware of those of us who were waiting. A waitress stepped into hostess duty briefly while the hostess was occupied to reassure us we would not have to wait long or offer us a seat in the bar. Once seated we did not wait long at all for service. Their menu is extensive but not overwhelming--they have everything you'd expect of a good Italian restaurant. My husband ordered the chicken parmigiana and I ordered the potato gnocchi with bolognese sauce. My husband's meal came with soup or salad but mine did not which was odd. The food was average. My husband's chicken was over breaded and quite greasy. My gnocchi was delicious but the bolognese sauce was too salty. All items were priced a bit too high for the quality. If we were looking for Italian in downtown in a pinch we'd probably return but would also look into exploring other options.

Be careful what you order.

By aksasquatch |

I love Italian and the food tasted great but, I got violently sick right after eating here. Had the bolognese. Apparently something wasn’t clean or prepared properly. Be careful.

Authentic Italian Restaurant in Downtown Portland, OR

By Andrea-Scarlett586 |

A cozy, relatively authentic Italian restaurant. We arrived for dinner without Reservation but got a nice table. The service is very friendly and attentive. There are even Italian cocktails, such as Bellini, very delicious. The starters very delicious and the pasta was really very good. Finally espresso and tiramisu, was quite original Italian. The local is close to the waterfront, within easy walking distance of many hotels and priced within easy reach. There is a full Recommendation from me! Better book this weekend.

Very Tasty Food in a Nice Atmosphere.

By JIMC |

Just had a terrific dinner there. The Chicken Piccata was so tasty. The service was very friendly and efficient. Nice big dining room but not noisy. We highly recommend this place.

Very nice staff

By Bill Y |

Had dinner and the wait staff was very friendly and pleasant. I had the Bolognese which had home made noodles and the dish was good, but not great. Overall good food for a good price.

Good food

By Patricia T |

Reasonably priced Italian restaurant. Conveniently located downtown near several hotels. The fried mozarella is a must! I had the carbonara and it was delicious. Decent wine list and good service.

Solid Italian food...

By blazinglady |

We always enjoy a good family Italian restaurant and this definitely served it's purpose. We made reservations and they probably seated us when we arrived. It's a very classic Italian restaurant with high ceilings nice artwork and old style chandeliers. The menu is extensive with fish, meats, pasta and appetizers. We had the fried zucchini which was wonderful. The grilled Caesar salad was wonderful and the minestrone soup hit the spot. Most of us had pasta. They had a fabulous gluten free pasta as well which one of our guests just loved. The bread was warm and homemade. Our server was working hard and was very pleasant. My only real criticism of our evening was the kitchen. They were clearly having issues with timing and getting backlogged. The restaurant was busy but not overwhelmingly busy yet we waited a very very long time for dinner to be served while we did watched others around us get served before us. But the food was worth it and I would go back again.

Terrific Italian food!

By 1492Sonoma |

This restaurant was on my list to visit. After walking around Portland for a few hours I found Mama Mia Trattoria. I was pleasantly surprised since I wanted to have a meal here before I left Portland. The special was Chicken Parmesan and it was delicious with pasta and pesto sauce. Everything seemed to be homemade with fresh ingredients.

Inexpensive Italian in Nice Setting

By Pam B |

Lovely setting, excellent service. House salad had a bit too much dressing (although it was tasty!), veal parmesan not as tender as I remember veal should be. Bread came with meal (a plus in Portland). Fried zucchini and minestrone above average but not remarkable.

Nothing Special

By nurse218 |

We came here on a business trip on a Wednesday evening. The hostess seemed annoyed we didn’t have a reservation even though there was no one waiting for a table but us. Once sat, we waited FOREVER for everything. The food was good but nothing to write home about.

Festive Christmas Eve Dinner

By METMEP |

We have our annual Christmas Eve Dinner as a family at Mama Mia's every year following a day of activity downtown. The drinks, appetizers and main courses were great and loved having it part of our tradition.

Great Italian food

By Debbie L |

Terrific, authentic italian dinner. Tables were well spaced out and service was excellent. Location is right downtown - not far from the river. Space is beautiful - especially the chandeliers.

Pretty good, heavy food

By Virgil_Boulder |

We went here for a large group dinner where all the dishes were brought out from a fixed menu. It didn't seem like a particularly busy evening. I thought service for everything was kind of slow in terms of food and drinks coming out, but the water was very professional, capable, and friendly. Garlic bread - I'm not really a fan, this seemed like your standard American garlic bread to me. Minestrone - just OK. Homemade pasta with creamy sauce - this was good, pretty heavy eating. Pasta with red sauce - pretty good, nothing special. Veal scalloppine - this was excellent in taste and texture. Chicken piccata - pretty good, maybe a bit bland for my taste. Tiramisú - just okay, needed more of a bite in my opinion. In summary, I would go here again, but this is kind of home style Italian American food, not chef-prepared meals.

Good service. Decent food.

By JeevesTraveler |

We went there for dinner. Door is what is to be expected of a typical Italian restaurant, maybe with a bit of uniqueness. The pasta is made fresh locally daily. Overall food was decent. Gnocchi was not great...too sticky and gummy, but the pesto sauce was good. Veal was good. Wine selection was just OK, not great. This is an amazing wine region and we were surprised to not find some more of the local/regional wines. Service was good and friendly. Carrot cake for dessert was good. In house pastry chef makes the desserts. Overall a decent experience.

Lovely

By TCM327 |

Lovely restaurant and great food. Family of 3 and we all had great meals. Tasted so fresh. This would be a great date night restaurant. Would definitely go back!

Great Service and Great Food...

By Mark W |

We had a party of 6 people all ordering different entres and everyone loved everything. We started with calamari, fried mozerella, and fried brussels sprouts followed by chicken parm, chicken picatta, risotto, and more....chicken parm was out of this world...

Great Italian Night

By Norman M |

My colleagues and I stopped here for dinner one night as we tried the various restaurants around the hotel. We saw Mama Mia while driving back to the hotel and made a note to come back and try it. We arrived at 6 pm and the restaurant was not that full on a weekday night. We were promptly seated and given menus. The menu items are what you would find at any Italian restaurant, and the prices were very fair. We decided to start off with the calamari and the bruschetta. For our entrees, we ordered Pork Chop, fettuccine Alfredo, and Chicken Marsala. We also ordered drinks from the bar. The drinks arrived first, and while they were decent, this was not a strong point for the restaurant. The Calamari and Bruschetta arrived, and they were delicious—well above average. The calamari was cooked perfectly, and the different spreads for the bruschetta were different but very good. After that, our entrees arrived, and the presentation was excellent. The pork chop was not overdone and was very juicy. The pasta was also delicious and done al dente. I would come back again just for the food, but I would probably skip the drinks. If they elevated their bar menu and drinks, I think they would be 5 stars.

Age Discrimination at Happy Hour!

By Key W |

They would not let us order happy hour appetizers because I had a minor with me. They said I could only order in the bar area. They did offer to let me pay full price. No thanks. The dinner prices were pretty high and the guy at the host stand was rude.

A very nice restaurant with good food and service

By 135dl2016 |

The food was very delicious and quite large in portion. You would not feel hungry several hours after dinner. The service was not bad and the interior design was quaint and romantic.

Nice Italian

By Shelby T |

Our family had a nice time! I really enjoyed the fried mozzarella and lasagna. I gave it a 4 because my child got the macaroni and cheese and it was really not good and I feel like that should have been an easy one to do. Our waitress was very kind and attentive!

Really quality experience Casual setting

By alohapeter |

Although the service was slightly sluggish, the food was truly wonderful. The three of us ordered different appetizers and entrees and we were all very happy with this food.Very Classic menu but all done tastefully and plated beautifully.

Great food, but maybe you should drive

By Erin F |

We decided to take the 14 minute walk here. Streets near the area were FULL of drunkies and crazy people. Maybe you should drive. Other then the location, the food and service was amazing. Some of the best Italian I’ve had in a while. Would recommend!

A bit too salty for us

By M O |

We loved our server, Colton!! And the location is great. But the salt level ws far too much for us. Meatballs salty, Cacio e pepe was literally inedible due to the salt level. Desserts were fantastic.

Night out with the guys

By katie r |

I had accompanied my husband on his business trip to Portland and we were invited to dinner with 5 of his co workers , Mama Mia's was a 15 minute walk from or Marriott City Center hotel . the restaurant is in an old building with tall ceilings, sparkling chandeliers , dim lighting and pretty woodwork . We waited on a bench inside until our party arrived, there is a small bar as well. The dining room is fairly small but it looked like there was a curtain partitioning off another dining room . Our server went over the menu and specials and took drink orders , we selected an Oregon Pinot Noir and a California Cabernet , both tasty . The table shared appetizers of meatballs, calamari, and mussels . 3 of the guys enjoyed Veal Parm and Veal Piccata another had potato gnocchi and I had a salmon special . The table shared Tiramisu and scoops of Italian ice cream. Service was attentive, portions ample , setting comfortable .

Brilliant Dinner

By Jim A |

This was a really good stop. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. It was a very nice experience and I would definitely go back again. Really unique.

Terrific! Wish we had them here.

By DougInNC212 |

Mama Mia Terrifica, you might say. This is dining the way it was meant to be, with authentic dishes, subdued atmosphere, and friendly welcoming staff. Pasta, seafood, or any other meal is sure to please. Great for a couple like us or a family like those around us. I so there were more places like Mama Mia, particularly around my home in NC.

Happy Hour

By LaLunaStella |

I read the reviews about happy hour at this location and decided to sample some dishes from the menu. The minestrone soup and romaine salad were very good. The manicotti was awful. It tasted like mold but apparently the flavor was an overabundance of dried thyme. I liked that shaved cheese came with the bread.

Don't Be Fooled, This Is Good

By Chuck C |

You might look in on this restaurant from the street and think it's "an Italian restaurant for TV." Don't be fooled. Despite the old-school red velvet curtains and baroque details, despite the too-good-to-be-true location, this is not a set for a Vincent Price TV special, it's a real Italian restaurant serving fresh, deliciously prepared meals. The price-quality ratio is excellent. The service was superb.

Amazing food!

By Kmartin87 |

Love all of the food here! Beautiful restaurant and great staff! We also love the happy hour! Highly recommend this place!

Fantastic dinner

By LetsGoDen |

Our group of 17 were seated at three tables on a Saturday night. Atmosphere, food, drinks were all very good. Everyone liked their food and also appreciated being in a quiet area so that we were able to have a conversation with those at our table. Some of us shared a salad or appetizer and were happy that our server Stephanie split those for us.

A Little Dark

By cattleman-traveler |

I was a bit worried when my water came warm and it was too dark to read the menu. Once the food came I was very happy. It was excellent, I had the lasagna and it was top notch. The Mrs. enjoyed a pizza and the kids had awesome pasta dishes. Excellent!

So cute.

By Carl R |

This is romantic and one block from the Max line. We have been several times for happy hour which is a good deal. Also they have nice desserts and a killer chocolate flourless cake with raspberry sorbet. The wine selection is nice. Just a quaint, cozy place with low music so you can hear your date and enjoy some time together. The pasta is good quality. We had fun and will return

A Great Little Italian Place

By ltspada |

I am pretty picky when it comes to Italian food. No I don't have an Italian grandmother or anything like that but it is one of my better loved food groups (yes I know it's not an official part of the pyramid by itself but perhaps it should be). So what makes good Italian food to me is pasta that is not overcooked (sounds fundamental but some think all dente is more like all mushy) fresh tasting pasta sauce (I want to taste those tomatoes),tasty breads and bubbly hot dishes (can you say cheese). This met all my criteria and had friendly and above average service at a reasonable price.

Dinner

By Ricardo C |

The pasta was excellent!! I thought we were eating more of a crêpe then it was Postel. Great flavor and superb service!!

Nice Italian Meal

By skibum123 |

We had this delivered to our hotel, so I can't really comment on the in-restaurant experience. We had entrees of Spaghetti and Meatballs, Fettuccini Alfredo, Chicken Parm, Chicken Scallopine Piccata and then also some garlic bread. Wife loved the Piccata. I sampled all the others. My favorite was the Chicken Parm. Meatballs were pretty dense and tasty. All told the food was quite good. My bias is that I'm pretty critical of Italian, because I eat it a lot. The bar is high for me. So I feel the 4 rating is fair. This was not mind-blowing, over the top amazing Italian...but it was solid and satisfying. I have had better and I have had MUCH worse. I feel that the price point for what was delivered to us was a bit high (not counting delivery fees), but I definitely didn't regret ordering from Mama Mia. I would likely return here and eat in house.

Amazing people and food!

By susiesw99 |

Maggie was amazing. Went above and beyond to help us and was only sitting at bar. She cared about customer experience and loved the place!

Yum!

By AAS |

A little pricey but very good food! You will not be disappointed with the food and friendly wait staff but just don’t expect to leave with a small bill (2 appetizers and sharing a pasta dish, and no alcohol was $52 before tip). Good place for date night!

Good food but expensive

By Hardtoplease75 |

The food is excellent, tasty and just plain good. The portions are large. Food in most restaurants does not usually impress me but the four of us had three different selections and all were cooked to perfection. Service was OK and polite but nothing special or personal. Decor was kind of bland. We went on a week night so it was not crowded but it probably gets loud when full.

Cool ambiance, good food, nice service

By Marlene H |

I really liked this restaurant. Cool look, good food, really nice servers. Worth a visit! They even have vegan meatballs. Good quality produce, too.

WE ENJOYED IT!

By Michael A |

I felt like Italian and we found Mama Mia on the internet. We were staying on Hayden Island and found the drive to SW 2nd Ave straight forward and easy. There is ample paid parking across the street form the restaurant. We did not have reservations but were seated at a nice table quickly. The menu selections for both wine and food are extensive. Our appetizer was not served but the "Mains" were delicious. We were given a complementary desert to make up for the service oversite. We get to Portland only once a year, but we would visit Mama Mia again.

Disappointed with the concierge recommendation

By Marie-ld7 |

The concierge told us Portland is a foodie place and promptly recommended Mama Mia along with a few others and said booking was advised. We wandered down there to an almost empty restaurant and asked for the waitress recommendation. We ordered 2 different chicken dishes and felt we had gone back in time to the 80’s when they arrived. I haven’t seen dishes like this for decades. We couldn’t finish the meals . The decor needs sprucing up and the menu need a complete overhaul. It wasn’t a disaster but I wouldn’t return or recommend. Staff were lovely

Amazing gnocchi with pesto!

By NottsFoodNerd |

Wandered in here by chance after a long flight from the UK. To tired to think about what to order, I asked the waitress for a recommendation, and she suggested gnocchi with pesto and chicken. It was historic! By far the best pesto I've ever tasted, and everything went together perfectly. I'll be back. Check it out!

Very good dinner, reasonably priced

By Sillydg |

Convenient location for downtown or easily accessible from the east side. Love their meatballs and spaghetti!

Authentic husband/wife taverna with draft beer

By Jonbatch |

Just slightly off the water, cute little authentic taverna with draft beer, great food selections and excellent moussaka!

Disappointing visit

By LoveRedRocks |

Walked in and inquired about the wait, which was said to be 45 minutes even though many tables were empty - they "were all reserved". I was invited to sit at the bar & told I could order there, which was fine as I was alone. The bar was full of people, all but two eating as well. I ordered the prefix menu and waited, and waited, and waited. I finally asked the bartender if she had placed my order & she said "yes, they just need more hands to carry it out". My first item was minestrone soup, which you know is already prepared and has only to be labeled into a bowl. 30+ minutes to get the soup. Then, another 25 minutes for the eggplant parmigiana, and another good 15+ for the dessert after I was done with the entree. Meanwhile. A group of gentlemen next to me ordered lasagna. It came out lukewarm. They sent it back, waited almost 30 minutes for replacements and they were no warmer than the first round. The restaurant did the right thing and comped their entire bill, and gave them a gift card to come back. My food was good, but nothing special. It was a frustrating experience. I don't blame the bartender - she was working her but off, never standing still for a moment. When you add up all the parties dining at the bar, plus the two small & one quite large table she had to wait on, well, it's just too much. The equivalent of 8 tables, plus bartender for the whole restaurant. I don't think I'd return.

We had an early dinner at Mama Mia and enjoyed the food, wine and great service

By Pete C |

Older decor reminds you of 100 years ago elegance. Lots of windows and an ample decorative bar. We can recommend the blue mussels, manicotti, and pizza.. all good. Also the lemon torta.

Good, but not great

By dhenneke |

Ate here with a small group, and each of us ate something different. I had the Gnocchi Bolonaise, which was only OK. Came out cold, so had to send it back. Even when warm, was still just OK. The rest of my group thought there meals were good, but not that memorable. Overall, price was not bad, but was hoping for a little more flavor and variety in the dishes. House wine was not great, but the wine selection was pretty good.

AVOID if you Can...Really

By PaulLovesGravy |

As much as I wanted to like MM because of it's straight ahead menu, our experience was poor. Badly undercooked pasta on 2 of 3 dishes, rubber calamari under fried and a mealy mush, and chicken that made my brother sick 2 hours later. Service was friendly but very inattentive. Cute place and nice people, but food was deplorable and attention was rare. Think lesser version of Olive Garden. Please find another place...you'll thank me later.

Wonderful food, great service!

By rickh57 |

We visited Mama Mia for a birthday party for our kids. The food and staff and environment were all terrific. The warm bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar were tasty. As soon as our bread basket was empty, our waiter would bring us a fresh supply. The portions were large. Joy and I split a dessert, taking home half of our entrees to make room. A very good dinner!

Solid but nothing special

By AdamL60093 |

We all left happy and full but quite frankly there was nothing special about the food at this place. The arrabbiata was ok but had no spice to it. The salad was good Our kids liked the pasta The waitstaff was great and super kind They are the gem of this place in spite of the average tasting food

Laughable Reservations and LOUD

By Eener A |

Twenty five minute wait for the table after the reservation time. Then the restaurant is painfully loud , pretty much deafening. Wait staff is ok but hostesses and the person who brings you to your table are nasty and inept. It is not a dining experience - but a place to eat Italian food that is average.

Underwhelming

By Wayne Centrone |

It had been years since our last visit to Mama Mia. And, although the atmosphere has changed very little - the food has become a bit of a “Denny’s does Italian” feel and taste. We were a big table - 11 adults and 2 kids. We ordered a fair number of items - including drinks and wine. The food was adequate, with the best dish of the evening being the Carbonara. The service was - well . . . Not super attentive. The evening seemed more like a footnote to the server, than a focus. The sever and the general feel of the service in the restaurant was underwhelming with forgotten requests and little attention. I’m not sure we will ever be back. Especially in an Italian restaurant rich city like PDX. The challenge is where do you take a big group?

Great Happy Hour

By Lisa G |

We stopped in for happy hour yesterday. They have a wonderful selection of delicious, small plates. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. We will definitely be back!

Great restaurant

By Mike A |

Great Italian in Portland. Old style Italian restaurant. Service and good quality are excellent. Will eat again here

Average

By Nandi S |

I was not impressed with this restaurant. I went off of the reviews and the fact that it was located close to our hotel. The restaurant definitely needs some TLC. I highly recommend replacing the old and smelly carpet with something other than carpet. I’m assuming it’s the carpet that gave it an off putting smell. Not what you expect when walking into an Italian restaurant. Our server was great and very attentive. He also provided us guidance on what to offer and gave great suggestions. We had the focaccia but it seemed old and dry. It was not fresh and hot. We ordered the Manila clams as an appetizer. They were good but not outstanding. They lacked something. I think having a good dipping bread would’ve helped. My husband ordered the manicotti and add sausage per the suggestion of our server. He liked it but it too was just average. It was a huge serving of 4 stuffed manicotti’s. I ordered the cioppino and it was good but not outstanding. I’m accustomed to it being a little different. This one had a sauce that was more like a spaghetti sauce. There was lots of seafood and they were cooked tender, not over done. There wasn’t much of a seafood taste to it. If you’re looking for the classic version this isn’t it. If you are ok with a quick version this will be just fine. I had to ask for bread to sop up the sauce as it came with only 2 very small toasted points. The last dish was fettuccine and chicken was added per suggestion of our server. Our daughter seemed to love it. We finished the meal of with desserts. Our daughter ordered the cannoli and said it was good but a little different than what she was used to. We were told the shells are made in house. I unfortunately did not have a bite. I ordered the chocolate flourless cake with the homemade raspberry sorbet. It was good. The sorbet was wonderful. I wish they hadn’t added chocolate sauce on too of it as it was not needed, especially with the richness of the cake. All in all this was not a bad choice but definitely did not reflect the quality we were expecting from the reviews.

Great Meal

We had done a full day tour and wanted somewhere close to the hotel. This fit the bill. It was very good food and great service.

Authentic and classic Italian cuisine

This 1886 building is 4 blocks from downtown and has parking lots and street parking ( all paying). The back-ground music was 1950's jazz crooners and was perfect for conversations. There is a bar tucked away with a very discreet TV which did not mar the ambiance. Our wait person was professionanl and courteous and well informed about the menu. And in the 98 F Portland mid July heat, the AC was appreciated. My main dish was a very tasty Penn Cove mussels. Hum, could have eaten a dozen more. The garlic baguette was buttery and crunchy. I had an excellent Tiramisu and it was soaked just right, the portion was large ( good idea to share this dessert). My friend with whom I was staying for 3 days, suggested Mama Mia and it was an excellent suggestion.
