Excellent menu, wide variety, excellent food! Friendly and helpful service. Took a handicapped relative. Greeted and assisted to a nearby table and seated immediately. Started with a small order of fried mushrooms -- they are GOOD! Only caution, don't spoil your dinner! We variously had schnitzel or one of their dinner salads. All terrific! No room for dessert.

I have been to Mama's Cafe a few times, but this time two of our dishes that we ordered were terrible. I ordered the fish tacos with the dressing on the side. I don't like dressing on my fish, but when it arrived, their was dressing in my tacos. Sent it back. The other two persons at my table started to eat. They were almost half way done before my plate arrived again. This time there was no cabbage in my tacos and one of them only had a very few small prices of fish, about a table spoon.I only complained about no cabbage. They took the plate back, added cabbage. They should have noticed that there was barely any fish in the taco. I felt they did on purpose, because I complained. I was very upset. I did not want to keep on complaining. The Blacken Tilapia with Creole sauce had way to much salt. Left about half of it. The rice was over cooked and mushy. I will not be going back. I was only offered a free appetizer on my return visit. At first I did not want it because I knew I was not coming back, but they insisted. $59.00 charge. Plus $8.00 tip. Not worth it.

Had the chicken fried ribeye steak for the lunch special. Glad they gave me a real steak knife, but maybe needed a chain saw instead. Toughest, gristly piece of meat I have had in a long time. Sides were good and service was excellent. Stick with the 1/2 serving of chicken fried steak which is what everyone else got and theirs looked good.

I office near this Mama's location and often dine 3 - 5 times per month (or more) for lunch and breakfast only. Its solid for breakfast 100% of the time but you can get on uneven meal during lunch unless you choose the special of the day. Very busy during the lunch hour at this location...

I CALLED TODAY AND WAS TOLD THEY NO LONGER TAKE CALLS OR ONLINE ORDERS OVER THE WEEKEND. I WORK AT A HOSPITAL CLOSE BY AND WE EAT THERE ALL THE TIME. BUT NEVER AGAIN. WE CAN NOT GO THERE AND WAIT FOR OUR ORDER TO BE PREPARED. TOO BAD I LIKED THE PLACE. I ONLY WORK WEEKENDS

When I travel to Texas I want lots of Tex mex and as a change in pace, chicken fried steak. So I came to mama’s cafe for the chicken fried steak and was not disappointed. A half order was plenty and it was good! The green beans were great! They offer home cooking like liver and onions, chicken dumplings, pot roast, pancakes, breakfast, veggie plates. So I think everyone can find something here. And, oh, they also serve Tex Mex!

We were so excited Mama's was finally open again. So sorry to find out the changes in the menu now don't even include chips, salsa, some of the old favorites. I got my go-to, the Huevos Hofbrau...it has changed in a negative way. Only tomatillo sauce, not salsa in the place. No tortillas, everything is very minimal. We loved the old 'little bit of everything' look and menu. There was something for everyone on the daily blackboard. It looks nice, but it feels like the heart is gone. We loved that some of the old waitstaff was still there but we won't be going back. It was the only restaurant of its kind and now it is just like all the rest. Cappy, everyone loves you but you stripped this place of all that made it wonderful. Our kids grew up wanting to go to, "Bottle Cap Mamas" but my grandkids missed out.

Couldn't decide between the Enchiladas or Monday special Chicken and Dumplings . Ordered a Sangria Margarita on the rocks ( 2.50) which was really good . I ended up ordering the Enchilada plate which was really good !! The server brought me a sample of the Chicken and Dumplings which was really good !! but needed a bit more seasoning ( I like things spicy ) . I would give this place a try ...

We had a group lunch here. First time many of us had been there since their reopening. Pablo provided great service. We had the okra and cornbread as apps and they were great! Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the chicken avocado dish with green beans and slaw. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the avocado was ripe and added flavor. The green beans were very good but the slaw was disappointing. Give this place a try! I'll be back!

Place has been here forever. Ambiance is comfortable. Nothing pretentious and no airs here. Sirloin in the butanas was VERY tender. This appetizer is big enough to be a meal in itself. According to the other party at this meal, catfish was better than that in New Orleans

This was our first visit and we wanted more choices for dinner. Mama's is truly a comfort food restaurant. I had the Chicken Fried Steak half order and it was a big portion. The batter was very light and the cream gravy was scrumptious. My wife had the lemon pepper trout which came with rice pilaf and one side. Again it was the whole trout and it too was cooked perfectly and delicious. They served us corn bread muffins with the meal which were sweet and melt in your mouth good. We finished our meal with a slice of their chocolate cake with pecans and ice cream. The cake is homemade and like Texas Sheet Cake. I'll go back just for the cake!! Very friendly service and she made some great recommendations. We also had a jukebox in our booth!!! How retro!! We will return for sure.

Delicious food! Homemade flavor, variety of dishes. The place is very nice, large and the attention of the staff is excellent. 100% recommendable.

Disappointed in the food. Greasy. Stringy onion rings. Expensive grease which left my stomach upset and a coating on my tongue. Save your money. There's good places to eat in San Antonio and this is not one of them

every time we took a bite and loved it, we'd take a bite of something else and love it more! melted in our mouths. mashed potatoes were out of this world, so was the cream gravy and mac n cheese! Mom loved the fried mushrooms. price was very reasonable and Servings large. Our waiter, Chris, was super friendly, and attentive! I could not recommend this place more!

Manager Dennis could give a hoot about customers or food. 65.00 bill for 4 and none of it could be eaten!! Two things were remade and still horrible. Manager could gave cared less and could not even act like he cared. Do not go here!!

Didn't look like anything special from the outside but the down home atmosphere and home cooking were very good. I had waffles and my wife had an omelette and both were very good

Always busy, and for good reason. Creative cocktails, breakfast anytime, and delicious food. Today my wife enjoyed what she, without hesitation, describes as the "best chicken fried steak ever" because of the top quality of the beef. Nicely prepared with excellent gravy and with sides, the steak was superb. It is noisy, because people are having a good meal and enjoying their time together. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The food was great with a big variety of home cooking favorites --- but the juke box ate my quarters... playing only a couple I picked and then we could not even hear them in our booth... THAT was a ripoff! But we did like it so ,much we ate there twice.... good value we thought for good food!

Thought we'd try this place out right off the bat for breakfast, very busy and parking was tight. Got inside and liked the atmosphere and motif but it the allure ended there unfortunately. The waiter was young, confused and lacking in general. Food arrived pretty quick but my wife's re fried beans were cold and we seemed to be missing things (like breads or toast) and never asked. The food was alright but for the price lacking in quantity and quality, won't be going back if we return to town again.

Food was good. Truck was broken into and they stole two handguns and company laptop. Heard that this happens frequently. They need security and cameras.

Ambiance- upbeat and friendly with Texas charm Location- near Airport Food- they serve both breakfast and lunch. Our group had the daily special of Pot Roast with Mashed Potato’s and Slaw or Green Beans. Service- The service was top-notch for the entire visit. The wait staff is very attentive and providing refills along with fulfilling any special request do you have for your meal

I have wanted to go to this cafe for a long time. So when my husband asked me where i wanted to go for my birthday, I said Mama's Cafe. The place itself is cute and welcoming. I really liked the decor and our waitress and other people that served us. I wanted the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. My first bite of the chicken fried steak, I knew something was wrong. I had my husband taste it. The breading tasted like fish. The steak itself was fantastic. I could cut it with a fork. I asked the manager when he came by to check on us if the steak and the fish were fried in the same grease. He said yes. He said if you don't prefer that then next time ask for the vegan basket so they don't use the fish baskets. The waitress never asked me if I liked fish tasting chicken fried steak. I thought it was weird that I was supposed to know that in advance. I told him I did not like it. He did nothing about our bill. I asked for gravy on the side. I liked it because it didn't have to much pepper in it. My mashed potatoes were on the cool side. I had peach cobbler for dessert. They said there was a biscuit topping on the cobbler. It was more like cake on top. I scooped it off because I didn't care for it. My husband had pot roast, his helping was more on the burnt side of things. I was tasting fish the rest of the night. :( Very disappointed with my birthday dinner. I doubt we will go back because of the lingering taste of fish all night. Still turns my stomach to think of it. Would anyone else expect that their chicken fried steak would taste like fish? In my opinion, if I wanted fish I would have ordered it.

I've been eating here since the 70s and the food has never disappointed me. The menu includes salads, fresh vegetables, great burgers, fried mushrooms, and chicken-fried steaks. Great margaritas and bar drinks, too. Try the botanas, pieces of beef tenderloin or white-meat chicken drenched in some of the best queso in town. The chocolate-chocolate cake and the coconut cream pie are to die for!

This place has good vibes, great food, surprisingly professional service for a "diner"-type setting... and they are NOT afraid of vegetables. It's what real country "home cooking" should be like. The type of food that's well-prepared, well-balanced and filling, but with wholesome ingredients that don't make you feel gross - even if it *is* fried. It's rare finding places like this that give you ample comfort food options without sacrificing your blood pressure or productivity for the rest of the day! I dined with others who've experienced the food and various locations over the years. They said this original location has been the best, and the recent interior updates during COVID made this Mama's location even more appealing (although we REALLY would've appreciated some cushions in that booth seating *ugh*). It took a good five minutes for one person to get over the fact that the Pot Roast was that days lunch (not dinner) special. This person is too picky and too skilled a cook to have sad puppy dog eyes over barely anything out, let alone Pot Roast! Must be good... To get your fill and the best bang for your buck, I'd definitely recommend getting the plates. Every Plate entree is something I want to come back and try (except maybe the Liver and Onions, but for people who enjoy that sort of thing I think that this would be the place to try it). Other rants and raves reported to me: the Meatloaf, the Chicken Breast Melt with Avocado, the Chicken Fried Chicken, the Shrimp a La Plancha, and a reasonably priced Surf&Turf Special that was plenty for two. YOU GET THE IDEA! Basically, just make the "Plates" menu your bucket list. I love that their sides are diverse and each comforting without being heavy or oily. Endless combinations. On my first visit I *really* loved their Chicken Fried Steak! I ordered their "Full" for $17. They do offer a "half" for $14. I was seriously expecting the type that Longhorn Cafe sells that are almost the size of the whole plate. (I was looking forward to a second meal at home!) However, the "Full"CFS here is not like that. The Half would've been too light - for me, anyway. Between the *perfect* mashed potatoes, pleasant actually-green beans, and the savory, thick white gravy (which was a small portion but a little went a long way).... I was *perfectly* and *happily* full. Not feeling gross. Just well-fed. The CFS had a delicious batter fried in clean oil. I could eat the crunchy batter by itself (and did). The steak was tender, thick, well-seasoned, not overly salty. I think other places pound their Fried Steak thinner to "look" bigger and fill you with more square footage of batter, so this was a quality version. My generous co-diners offered me multiple samples of their entrees/sides: The Pork Schnitzel was perfectly prepared, accompanied with a grilled lemon. I loved their Braised Red Cabbage (with bacon). We ordered extra! The Creamed Spinach was flavorful without feeling too rich. And the Shells&Cheese I think use a smoked cheese because it had a "bacon taste" without bacon. I do think the sides are somewhat small (was told they used to be more generous servings) but I think they each are so well-made that they still pack a punch. No one left hungry and we didn't even do appetizers or salads. The Dessert menu was really attractive and reasonably priced at $6. The Warm Chocolate Cake was almost black chocolate, soft as angel food and dense as pound cake, not overly sweet (if you didn't include some of the *two* scoops of vanilla ice cream that came with it - how could you not though). I was not expecting the gooey fudge icing to be covered in pecans. I'm not allergic but dont usually eat nuts. I asked which desserts are nut-free for future reference. "The only one is the Apple Turnover, right?"... Nope! That has nuts too, apparently. NUT advice: Ask about the dessert ingredients because dessert and nuts seem synonymous here. They should definitely include this descriptor on the menu. The coffee was medium roast but great tasting; not acidic at all. The espresso-sized Oatmilk for a $1 up-charge was a bit steep, but I appreciated a non-dairy option and was content. Our server, Pablo, was excellent. He remembered our party members from the week before and was very courteous giving time when needed and prompt to remember details and fill requests. I still don't like the concept of those pocket devices being used when it's time for a customer to fill out the tip because it seems so awkward doing that in front of a server waiting for the device back. I really wish they would just print the tip receipt like they do for the itemized receipt they start with. I've experienced this at multiple places so I guess it's becoming the norm, and wish management would eliminate this service etiquette no-no.

The hostess were extremely rude to me after asking to sit in a certain severs section. I don’t know if it’s against any kind of policy but after my first trip to mamas after a 6 to 7 years hiatus I found the waiter to be quite friendly. I enjoyed the prompt service and it’s up the road from me so I thought what the heck. I’ll stop in again, because most the time it’s the experience and not necessarily the food. Big mistake. I wouldn’t recommend the food either. After the menu change and they got ride of their beer battered hot wings, it’s become quite frankly over priced. The ambiance is nice in the back or on the patio, but if you’re in the younger crowd I’d definitely steer clear. I had their fried catfish and it was a 4/10, for 17$ and received 2 very small portions. Nothing special about it at all. I was recommended the pb&j and heard good things about it which prompted me to go back, but that will never happen. Definitely a disappointing experience.

Had a coupon for this place and tried it out with my dining buddy. She ordered the 'King of Clubs' sandwich, I ordered a 'Spicy Buffalo Chicken' sandwich. They are with your choice of fries or onions rings, or a combo of both. She ordered fries, I ordered the combo. We both had iced tea. The meal was awesome! The chicken was a full sized breast with not too much breading ...not overpowering with buffalo sauce. Lots of food for under $10! The onion rings were fresh and crisp ...typical fries. The breast on my sandwich was so big I took it off the bun eventually. The service was prompt, but nothing special. This is a diner type environment with juke boxes at the tables. Good ambiance. With the coupon our entire meal was under $20. I will definitely bring my hubby back here!

I was there with a large group, and there were very accommodating! fried mushrooms were great, but the chocolate cake was warm and yummy! I had the soup and half sandwich which was plenty for lunch BUT the soup had spilled all over my plate and sandwich making it very soggy and messy! the waitress were NOT the most pleasant!

We were extremely sad when the location by our house became an IHOP. Lots of choices from chicken fried steak to king ranch chicken. Great rolls and cornbread and queso. One of the few places that list veggie choices on blackboards. The Forum location is good also.

We arrived on a Sunday morning after church with a party of 5. They had to put a chair at the end of the table to give us the 5th seat, but the hostess didn't even bother to check the table before putting anything on it. The wrapped silverware and menus got all gooey from the mess that hadn't been wiped from the table. We told our waiter immediately when he arrived, so he wiped our table (poorly) and then put the messy things back down. We had to ask him to wipe it again and bring us new menus and utensils. After that was taken care of we had a good breakfast for a good price. They accommodated all of our requests such as my Aunt wanting her omelet made with just egg whites, I wanted cheese on top of my grits, etc.

Visiting San Antonio for the first time in many years and had to stop by Mamas to get my favorite deep fried mushrooms! Just as good as always and the service was great also. Good to see they have been consistent over all these years!

Let me put it in simple terms: Mama's Cafe Sucks. We ordered a sampler appetizer. It was served 45 minutes after our initial order along with some piss-poor meals. All the food was room temperature. I don't know what happened to Mama's but 15 years ago it was good place to eat. There was some horse-playing in the kitchen area and little attention to the food. Save yourself the trip and go to McDonald's where the food is at least warm. This $52.00 dining experience gets two thumbs down. I had bubble guts about three hours later and the good ol' fashion $h!ts.

We LOVE going to Mama's Café in San Antonio. They have the BEST fried mushrooms anywhere! Their chicken fried steak is really good too -- but, if two people are going, only order one chicken fried steak because it's enough for two people! I wish they wouldn't have closed down the I-10 location -- it was much closer to us.

Word Of Mouth is how we found this terrific cafe. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner. They also adult beverages if you so desire. We started with their fried mushrooms. It came with homemade gravy and delicious ranch dressing. Very very tasty! I ordered the Liver & Onions and it was prepared to perfection. My husband had the Bbq Baby Back Ribs. They were fall off the bone delicious! Fast and friendly service. Immaculately clean restaurant and pristine restrooms… A great cafe for solo, couples or families..

We ate at Mama's Cafe during our visit to San Antonio and loved it!!! Great food and a very comfortable place. Each table has a juke box and high back wooden Booth. This was an amazing experience.

Arrived in San Antonio for a conference on Sunday morning and decided to try Mama’s Cafe. I big fan of breakfast on Sundays. Great atmosphere, cafe vibe with TX overtones. Old signs, license plates, etc. I was a little unsure about the cinnamon coffee but gave it a try and was impressed. Had the 2-2-2 which is eggs, bacon and pancakes. Perfect. The staff was super friendly and attentive. There is plenty of room for families and outdoor seating. Perfect breakfast for $12.

We have been visiting Mama's for 40 years. They had an ownership change four years ago. We arrived for an early lunch. There was no hostess and we got menus and seated ourselves. Nobody paid much attention to us and I went to the bartender, who agreed to take our order. Eventually Cynthia appeared as our server. She was a bit discombobulated, and was not getting much done. We placed our orders, the signature meatloaf and grilled chicken salad. After waiting over 20 minutes I approached Jose the manager. The line cook had neglected to turn on the oven which contained the meatloaf. Nobody followed up and no one let us in on their little secret. To his credit Jose apologised and picked up the check for the salad. The whole experience was strange and unusual for this place. Hopefully, Mama's Cafe will get things fixed.

Love! Home cooking, friendly and fast service all for a great price. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is the kind of casual place I liked to take my kids to when we traveled with them. Skip the chain restaurants, eat here instead.

I've been visiting San Antonio for almost 50 years, and Mama's Cafe has been a favored stop for most of that time! The menu is varied from classic "down-home" dishes, all-American favorites (great burgers!), Tex-Mex classics, excellent and varied salads, and terrific appetizers! We started our healthy salad choices with a small order of batter fried mushrooms -- WOW! The serving size of a half order is enough for a good sized group. The three of us managed to eat them all, and they were very good! Mama's is open for breakfast (which from earlier visits is also excellent). Service was very nice, friendly, but not intrusive. Our appetizer came within a few minutes of ordering, and salads arrived as we were finishing the appetizer. The desserts look good too, but we couldn't mange after the 'rooms and salads. Mama's also has a full service bar.

I have been eating at Mama's Cafe for decades. Always a good experience! This evening I had the Grilled Chicken Salad, always great. I really appreciate that they do not put msg (to keep them looking nice) on the veggies, as so many restaurants do. My man friend had the Chicken Fried Steak with green beans (& bacon!) and Spanish rice. He reported that his dinner was also very good. The surprise of the evening was the new Jalapeño Infused Peach Margarita. Excellent! Other favorites here are the Fried Mushrooms and the famous Bean Burger.

I wish there was a grade over 5 stars. If you are visiting the south and want southern food and service. Go to mamas. My husband had blackened catfish which he enjoyed, he can't remember his side dish. I had the liver and onions . (I know gross, but it is never offered anywhere and i love it). They cooked it great. Liver tends to be tough if not cooked right. . The broccoli rice was a new experience and was real good. The beans were fatted up with bacon in a true southern manner. The restaurant had a true southern ambiance. Loved it

This is down-home cooking! The staff is helpful, the menu is large, the food service is prompt, the food is very good. Come hungry! Also has a full bar and good margaritas! I've gone here off and on for about 40 years. I'll keep going as long as I visit. It's like home!

Love the smothered steak. Also all the appetizers, try the sampler plate. $6 Bacardi and coke. $1.75 more to make it a double. Great atmosphere. Too bad that this is the only one left. Wish there were more. The chicken fried steak is good, too. Beverly did a great job.

While on vacation we struck out at "IDA CLAIRES" because it was not what we were looking for. Google suggested mama's & we are glad we did. Since it was near noon when we showed up they notified us that there will be a 10 minute wait. Then when we were seated the had a great breakfast selection. I ordered the caramel latte (which I was charged a $1 for adding the caramel syrup into it) coming to a total of $5. My husband ordered a strawberry shake ( Also he was charged a dollar for the syrup) Also the waitress informed us that all their shakes are freshly made ( and she was not lying, extremely delicious! I ordered their waffle that come with bacon and eggs. Mu husband ordered the "helluva mess" meal. Both plates were yummy. My husband just wished his meal was a bigger portion.

A very interesting Friday night with my lady and her grandson! From the name, I expected an old style place, maybe even a diner. A " Coca Cola" sign got followed by "burgers and beer." The dining area seemed family oriented, but the surronding tv sets were all set to various games - no Captain Kangaroo here. I tried to order a Lone Star on draft, but it turned out they were out, so I settled for a Shiner Bock. The grandson had chicken friend chicken,my lady had a cheese steak, and I had a Southwestern chicken salad. Unfortunately we started out with trotilla chips with salsa, questo, and steak strips, which was enough for probably six adults. My salad was fabulous and enough that I brought some back along with some chicken fried chicken, mac and cheese, white gravy, and the salsa. All in all a very good time, helped along by a most attentive and pleasant server. I will be glad to return. (BTW, the grandson complained constantly until we got there. Then the mouth got used for eating and the eyes for watching the games.)

Everyone and food great I had buffalo wing and salad with bile cheese dressing fast and cinnamon coffe great

Went there for the Chicken Fried Steak the half order was enough. It had a great taste and Mac & Cheese was great. But the show stopper was the Cinnamon coffee with a slice of Carrot Cake. OMG the cake was fresh the waitress was nice enough to make us a fresh pot of coffee. I need to go back for more of everything. We had a great waitress suggested dessert Best thing ever. I will be back.

The inside is like a polished dive. I really liked it. Our server was fast and professional. I ordered biscuits and gravy and one huevos hofbrau breakfast taco. Everything was delicious and huge. My girlfriend ordered three massive blue berry pancakes. We each ate our fill and took home leftovers. I would recommend breakfast at Mama's Cafe to anyone. I'm looking forward to trying some other meals there now too. Cheers!

We love discovering local gems, and Mama's Cafe surpasses our standard. We came in need of an uninterrupted meal after caring for our toddler and newborn grandgirl this week. Upon arrival, the greeting at the door set the tone. The environment immediately made us feel at home. The dining area and restrooms were very clean. We appreciated the open kitchen. It was fun watching the staff work and interact with one another. Everyone seemed to enjoy working together. Damien, our waiter, was attentive, quick to recommend his favorites, and simply fun to chat with. My husband had the classic breakfast, which was very good. I took Damien's recommendation and had the heuvos hofbrau, which was exceptional. We often visit our daughter in San Antonio, and Mama's Cafe will be a new go to for us. We hope to try their dinner menu. It's also worth noting that their drink and dessert menus look very tasty. I'm thinking a mid afternoon coffee and dessert visit is next on my agenda this week. Highly recommend! We will see you again soon, Mama's Cafe!

The Tex-Mex wasn't very good or authentic. The fried mushrooms were very good. I ordered fajitas, the chicken was tough and the onions still had the skin on them. The peppers were good and fresh tasting. My husband ordered the fish tacos. All of our food was served warm/hot, but it wasn't Tex-mex flavors, it was very bland....eg. didn't have any seasoning or flavor. The salsa that they say is homemade wasn't very good either. We really wanted to love this place because of the ambiance and family friendly environment, but the service snd the food weren't up to our expectations for Mama's.

Fried mushrooms to die for, Texas size chickn frie steak and Texas sized taste.

Had breakfast at Mama's Cafe. I found this restaurant to appeared to be very clean with a very nice decor. The Omelette was served steaming hot and was very good. The biscuit was excellent and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I tried the fish and chips for dinner but it wasn't a big fan of the fish.

Decent place if you like fried food. Nothing special but good value. Plenty of locations around San Antonio.

Loved the food! Great comfort food menu, Daily Specials,Best of all full bar.Our server was so efficient, kind and a little funny, we really enjoyed the day.Doug thanks

Three different meals at our table and each one was more blah then the rest. Lunch came out quick is about the only positive however maybe if they spent a little more time in prep it would actually have taste. Won't be back

We lucked into this place for breakfast on a recent Sunday morning, and were happy we did. When it comes to breakfast, they know what they're doing. My wife loved her cinnamon coffee, and I loved their signature Migas. Service was efficient and pleasant. Cool retro design features, including CD jukeboxes in each booth.

After not eating at Mama's Cafe for over 10 years, I will certainly return. The fried mushrooms were fresh and crispy (although the white gravy seemed to be made from powder rather than from scratch). The bacon cheeseburger was grilled to perfection, the bun was toasted and the bacon was thick and crispy (not microwaved unlike in most restaurants these days). The iced tea was fresh. The booths were clean and the temperature was cool on a >100° weather day. Simply the best burger I've eaten in a long while.

I am living the dream. When Mama's in Houston was sold and promptly closed down - I thought I would never ever again have their delicious breakfast along with the best cinnamon coffee I have ever had. Well - happened to stumble upon this last Mama's Cafe. It's a treasure. If you ever have the opportunity - don't miss your chance. Check out this breakfast. Ordered 30 breakfast tacos to go also - for the office. They were in heaven.

We were visiting the city as we do a hand full of times each year and this place had been on our list to try but just wasn’t in the areas we are usually in, so we finally took the time to find the place and glad that we did. We have been to all of their sister restaurants and enjoyed them as well. Only negatives on this dining experience was the small built in table for two. I actually have a bruise from the corner of the wooden table, that hit me as I sat, then going to the restroom, then again upon leaving. It was a very tight fit. We had a really nice waiter, Xavier W! I said something or my husband did and he said thanks for the laugh I needed that today. Well, that was the first of several laughs for all of us. Very personable. He has worked for two of their sister restaurants over the years as well, so he knows his job! The best laugh was that I said “gravy on the side” twice, and of course that’s not what happened, but again, we laughed! The fried green tomatoes were ok, a little on the greasy side. Husband enjoyed his pot roast. The corn bread muffins were good. The chicken fried chicken was good accompanied by broccoli with a tiny bit of queso cheese sauce, I asked for another serving. Mashed potatoes were good. We spilt a serving of banana pudding, it was good, a little different in taste. The chocolate cookie on the plate tasted like a thin brownie. It was loud in there, a Saturday early afternoon.

We were running errands near Mama's Cafe and decided to stop for lunch. A few years ago the former owner group ( Lawton's) took back over this comfort food spot and have totally reinvigorated it. We have been several times and today's visit was the best yet. The quality is superb, the recipes are the key. Every item we have tried sounds familiar, but no it is Lawton special. The service is always top notch. The place is loud due to crowds and good music in the background. But we could hear each other. Mama's is a fun place. My wife had the Fish and Chips. The fries obviously had just come out of the frier and were spot on. The Cod was some of the best she has had, much better than several other San Antonio restaurants serve. She compared it to the best version she has had. That was on Bainbridge Island in Washington. I meant to order the BLT sandwich but mistakenly pointed to the Crispy Chicken Club sandwich. Great mistake. This is a two hands sandwich. Great piece of fried chicken, deliciously seasoned ( Lawton family is not shy on seasoning dishes), thick bacon, ham, cheese, onion, tomato and ranch dressing. Normally I am not a ranch fan but this combination of ingredients worked. I had green beans for my one side. Perfectly cooked ( not mush, and not raw) and seasoned for flavor enhancement. We will be making the drive to Mama's a little more often. Yes it is worth going out of your way.

Mama's used to be a fun, affordable food/drink hangout. Now it's more stuffy and overpriced. Four of us ate there for Mothers Day. We ate on their new patio, which is very nice. The service and food were not the best. We got nachos, asked for NO sour cream, got sour cream. I got the liver and onions, my usual there in the past. It was gristly. My wife got the CFS, it was also gristly and her mashed potatoes were missing. And it took at least 15 minutes to get a beer. I heard waiters apologizing at other tables for a variety of things. So grades, for atmosphere on the patio, A+. Food, B-. Service, C-. We'll probably eat elsewhere in the future.

Every summer we have a group of 20-30 people get together for our "summer reunion" and this time we chose Mama's Cafe. I was in charge of organizing, so I first went and had some lunch there with my family. We all enjoyed our meals. I loved the turkey sandwich, and we all shared (fought over) the chocolate cake for dessert. I was impressed with the two managers, Dennis and Jose who helped me plan the event for 2:00 to avoid the lunch rush. We had 25 people show up and there was plenty of room for us in the side room near the patio. After a year apart, we had some catching up to do and we spent some time walking around and visiting. Our server was so very patient. She repeatedly and calmly encouraged us to be seated so that we could order. Everything went smoothly and some us ended up chatting until 5:00, when the servers were getting the room ready for another party! It was great. Food was delicious, service was wonderful, and Dennis and Jose went out of their way to make sure everything everything was right. Our server was wonderful too! Thank you so much! We will be back!

This place is amazing. I do not understand how the food can be so good and the prices so reasonable. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. It was delivered in less than 5 minutes. The meat loaf reminded me of home; the mashed potatoes were made from scratch. The portions were so large, I made to sandwiches to take on my flight home. My friend ordered the chicken fried steak. Her piece was so huge it took up the entire plate and they had to bring the 2 sides in separate dishes. All the staff was genuinely cheerful and friendly. If you are ever in the area, you have got to eat here!

meh.. big portions don't make up for high prices and canned food, if your a decent cook it just wasn't worth it. I don't understand the 5 stars

This place is a little gem. From the outside it doesn't look like much and when you enter it has a country feel. Very interesting decorations. Appetizer: cheese sticks- tasted like regular cheeses sticks- good Entree: blackened tilapia and country fried stake. Both plates came with a side. The blacked tilapia was Amazing! It was probably the second best fish I have ever had. It was over rice and it had this spice to it that was just delicious. I got mashed potatoes as my side with brown Gravy but let me tell you that their was a spicy kick to it and I'm not too sure where the spice was coming from but I loved it. The country fried stake was MASSIVE and I mean literally. It took up the whole plate. My boyfriend can eat but he was not able to finish the full size stake- just a massive portion but he said it was delicious! This was a great little place to try out. We would definitely come back. Service was great. So no complaints-come check it out!

Mama's food still follows their recipes from the 70's!!! Fried mushrooms and cream gravy are great. My husband loves their bean burger and I always get the liver and onions and it never disappoints!! Service is fast and efficient too and the prices are still incredibly reasonable.

Fast and friendly service accompanied with great country food. Perfect place to attend with your staff for celebrations.

I can honestly say that I now understand why this is the last remaining Mama's Cafe in San Antonio and their customer service explains why. We were a large group of 25 which made reservations on Monday for Saturday night. Once we attempted to check-in, the homestead immediately told us "I'm sorry but we never received your reservation" and wasn't offered a further explanation. Then the store manager approaches us and says "oh we remember and have sat a couple down where your spot is so it'll be a further wait plus we cannot make them leave." Insane! We took up waiting at the bar area only to discover that we've suddenly "inconvenienced their path of travel". Mumbling and groaning from the staff. My family nor my wife and I will ever come back to this cafe again. Mama's used to be good. Ditch and go elsewhere.

Really like the build your own appetizer plate and the smothered steak is amazing. Leeanne and Beverly provided excellent service. Definitely one if my regular places for great food.

Mama's is just off Nacogdoches Road and 410. The restauarnt is behind an IHOP yet their breakfasts always beat IHOP. We love Mama's!!!! The service is always very good and the atmosphere warm and cozy. I love the Migas and my wife loves the Southwest Benedict. However everything we have ever had at Mama's has been very good. Don't pass this up!!!

Service pleasant and quick. Started it’s a small Caesar Salad which was fresh and crisp! For dinner I had their gulf shrimp and grits and it did not disappoint! Highly recommend if you like gulf shrimp and you like grits, Dessert…Apple crisp made in house with a scoop of vanilla! Will definitely be back!

The place had a homey and clean feel to it. The restaurant seemed to be ran well and the staff was professional as well as friendly. Our waiter Pablo took great care of us and we never felt forgotten. The food was also delicious!

We have been eating at Mama's Cafe since the 1970s and have never had a bad meal. Often we left with full tummies and a little guilt, but that not too bad for traditional Texas country comfort food. We had their breakfast on a Sunday. If you arrive before 10 AM, it shouldn't be too crowded. The hostess was new, and she wanted to seat us somewhere we didn't. So we just waited for her to return and got the right table. My BW had the omelet. It was enormous, and contained ham, cheese, onions, and mushrooms. It was delicious and done just right. It came with tasty grits and rye toast. I'm addicted to Huevos Hoffbrau. That breakfast dish was named after another Mama's on San Pedro which is now closed. Huevos Hoffbrau has eggs scrambled with tortilla chips, onions, and peppers covered with queso. This is one of my long time favorites. This came with great home fries and frijoles that a hint of lard, very old school. The soft corn tortillas were served with butter. Service was amazingly swift and friendly. Points for long term consistent quality, service, and taste applied here. Mama's Cafe lots of yummy food.

We stopped here for dinner one night. I had just started a keto diet, so I was pretty worried about what I would be able to eat at a mom and pop establishment. No worries were needed! My mother and I shared 2 pork chops, and we each got a side dish of our own. By far, the best pork chops I have EVER eaten! Really neat atmosphere, too! Every time we drive past this area, we reminisce. Highly recommended!

Stopped in for dinner, and really enjoyed it! If they can make liver and onions taste that good, just imagine what they can do with a chicken fried steak.

Was looking for anywhere in NE San Antonio to eat and stumbled into this place. The steak was excellently flavored, tender, and perfectly cooked. The wifey had the chicken fried steak, it was OK, huge in size, a little bit heavy on the breading. Sweet potato fries were good. Broccoli was so-so. Service was polite and efficient. Overall a good place to eat, and appeared to have many locals and families enjoying the good food, a well as a bunch of cops. I figure if the cops are eating there it has to be decent since they have eaten in about every place around. Price was very reasonable.

Pablo, our service was amazing and attentive. The food was delicious and good quality. The parking lot was packed but we were seated right away.

Stopped by here on my way to Camp Bullis. Had the breakfast tacos which were very good. Neat little restaurant right off of the 410 Expressway. Service was very good, food served quickly and was good as well.

This was our 3rd visit and we were seated near the kitchen and salad prep area. We observed the servers reach into a large salad prep container with their bare hands to grab the loose salad greens. Then they continued their server duties, which keeps their hands filthy by collecting currency, touching unsanitary surfaces and possibly picking their noses, etc. Tongs and/or gloves are the proper tools to use. One of our meals was given with mac and cheese instead of the ordered mashed potatoes with gravy. The server was told and she waited at least 10 minutes and returned to our table to retrieve the mac and cheese, which she then gave to a cook and then ordered the replacement potatoes. My complaint is the length of time to get the replacement order and what was the cook going to do with the mac and cheese - serve it to someone else after it sat on our table for 10 minutes. The server should have left it on our table or taken it directly to the dish cleaning area not back to the kitchen. We were very disappointed with the service but the food was good.

We have always enjoyed Mama's for 30ish years. They closed for about 3ish years. Now reopened, boy have the destroyed this place. Restroom is now a single, no more for 2 people. Increased seating in back but take out a toilet? When we walked in and couldn't hear the girl at the check in, we should have left, so loud in there. Way over staffed, 3 standing at front check in, 2 manager looking men standing by, 4 behind bar but with that we waited 10-15 minute for anyone to come to our table. Menu, its ok but the food...ordered a house salad. It was so tiny, about 10 mouths full $8. Mushrooms have always been a signature dish, greasy and so heavily battered, as was his chicken fried steak. No drink refills had to ask for box had to ask for bill. Before on a Friday night you would have had to wait for a table, nope lots came in & left, we should have too.

While recently in this area we found that Mama's was still at this location where it has been for decades. So we stopped in for lunch. It was crowded but there was plenty of parking and there also was seating available. We were seated quickly in the cute "mini" booths. They have table seating as well in three separate rooms. Although it took a bit for a waiter to get to us...He was super! We ordered a Texas Burger w/fries ($8.99) and a Club Sandwich w/fries ($8.99) and iced tea ($2.49). The grill was stacked with orders but the food came timely and it was well worth the short wait. Both meals were delicious and the club was perfection. The wheatberry bread toasted just right and flavorful and the bacon was thick and crispy, just the way I like it. The fries were nicely seasoned and crispy. Our waiter, Randy, was very nice and kept the tea flowing and checked on us timely. It was a great choice for lunch and we were stuffed. Even though it was pretty crowded, the noise level wasn't horrible. Glad this place is still around and too bad they are so far away from us!

The service here is friendly. The house margarita is exceptionally made and priced. The fish tacos were delicious but the tortilla was too flimsy and fell apart when I tried to pick it up. Otherwise the food is fresh and well prepared, especially considering the value. I've eaten at other Mam's Cafes and would do so again when the occasion arises.

NEVER go to this restaurant! Unless you like POOR service, 1-hour plus wait for your order and manager that doesn't care about patrons! After 20 years of going regularly to Mama's Cafe at 2442 Nacogdoches Rd, I've had enough. With just under half of the tables occupied on a Sunday evening, first item noticed was nobody was at the front stand to great patrons. So we sat down in the bar area (only one table occupied there) and waited for about 10 minutes, went and picked up a menu from the front, and waited another 10 minutes, before the waiter decided to come over. We made our drink order, which is custom for Mama's. My wife's tea came right away but I had to wait another 10 minutes or so for my draft beer. (30+ minutes after arrival). The waiter then came back after he delivered my beer and asked what we would like and we ordered a Chicken Ranch Salad and I just wanted the Texas Burger. And by now you might have guessed how long it took for those two items to arrive - yep, 35 to 40 minutes. After the food arrived, I asked the waiter for the manager and a few minutes later, a young woman walked up to the table and asked if she could help. I asked "Are you the manager?" She replied "no". I again requested for the manager. He finally came over later and said, "May I help you?" I told him how long we've been coming to this location and that this was the worst experience in 20 plus years. He said nothing in reply and left. After paying the bill, I went back over to him and again saying that I was very displeased with the amount of time it took this evening. He still didn't reply, turned and left. It became very apparent that we have to say good-bye to this neighborhood restaurant and will take our business elsewhere. Again, I highly encourage everyone else to do the same and never go to Mama's Cafe at 2442 Nacogdoches Rd again.

Visited on a Saturday around 1:30. Restaurant was packed meaning it was extremely loud. Our party of 3 had a hard time with table conversation. Appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes was tasty and came out quick. It took awhile for our main selection to come out. Server was attentive and courteous. Brisket Burger was top notch. Chicken Fried Chicken was great. Chicken Fried Steak was a disappointment. Meat was chewy throughout. Tasted fatty. Server was attentive and courteous. I would come back but not on a Saturday and perhaps later in the day. Also I would not order Chicken Fried Steak again.

Stopped with my co-worker as we were in town on a business trip. Had a typical breakfast. Food was very good and no complaints on the service either. Good stop.

Had a to-go order @5:37 pm, Friday evening. We have been going to Mama's for years, we live really close. However, these dinners were a disappointment: meatloaf was so tasteless and the Chicken Chalupas were not fit to eat. All the lettuce was wilted, the guacamole was runny and shoved into one box to go! The Vegetable soup/Ck tortilla soup was delicious and the cherry cobbler and Chocolate cake was delicious! Their batter dipped mushroom are excellent.

We found this incredibly unassuming restaurant while roaming around looking for a place to eat & take a break off the highway hoping for a comfortable setting with good food. What a lucky choice we made when we spotted Mama's Cafe! This cafe is just simply & absolutely one of the best "home-made" food sites that I have enjoyed over the years. Since I was born in West Texas, where home style cooking restaurants are an essential part of the culinary culture, I know the difference between "corporate" home-made food & the real thing: Mama's is the real deal. We started with the fresh, perfectly battered, correctly seasoned fried mushrooms, which were a definite positive litmus test for the rest of the menu. From that taste delight, we went on to enjoy an absolutely delicious line-up of club sandwich, hamburger "with the works," & fried chicken-strip salad with home-made blue cheese dressing that was so thick with chunks of blue cheese that I could not resist eating some of the dressing by the spoon! The nostalgic decorations on all walls were iconic scenes & images from 20th century "Americana" roadside stops highlighted by numerous old fashioned neon-lighted signs. It was like being on Route 66 before in Eisenhower's Interstate Highway plan evolved. What a delightful find! The service was immediate, friendly, & efficient. Parking plentiful right next to the cafe. Family friendly with a small, safe from traffic, little yard @ front door. Just enough space for kids to burn off a little steam from highway travel. Hope you try this site. You will not regret it, & by the way, each booth has an old fashioned coin operated jukebox from which you can select your own music!

I stop at Mama's Cafe each time I am in this area of San Antonio. They have some of the best fried mushrooms I have ever had.

I'm a native Texan and love my chicken fired steak. Googled the best places in San Antonio to find it. This came up very close to the top of the list, we were a party of 7 and they could seat us immediately so we went. The 3 of us that chicken fried steak couldn't even eat it. It tasted gamey of like the meat had gone bad and left an after taste in your mouth. The fired okra was lackluster as well. I was so disappointed that my only chance to get my favorite food was a bust (we were leaving town right after that meal to come back to the east coast). The others in our party that got different items said the food was just ok. The service was good and the waitress and bar tneder were very nice thankfully.

The service is fantastic. The food must be consistently good, because the place was packed for lunch by 11:30am on a weekday. Generous portions, quick service, delicious food. Our party of three had the catfish, a Caesar salad with chicken and a chopped salad. We started with their fried onion rings (outstanding). We would definitely visit again for lunch. Very nice server and we thought the experience was just fine.

Mama at Mamas! They just remodeled everything and was expecting a good meal but ordered the meatloaf with onion rings and Mac and cheese and mom got the breakfast for dinner. The food came cold so sent it back alongside my mom cold waffle! They bring back moms and eggs were raw and they bring me back onion rings but no meatloaf which comes 5 minutes later. The pre- fabricated meatloaf from the freezer is again cold but they run out of Mac and cheese so I wanted Texas Toast but kitchen is closed on Monday at 3 pm so don't get anything else but another cold pre-fab meatloaf. Don't ever go here it suck

Something for everyone and it's all fabulous! Steaks, burgers, soup, sandwiches and awesome appetizers... Everything about this place rocks! A destination restaurant in San Antonio for over 30 years, you've got to try it! Clean dining room; courteous, efficient waitstaff, and a very good bar too! Family/kid friendly also. My favorites are the Sancho Panza (queso on an excellent, tender sirloin steak) and the chicken fried steak with a side of fried mushrooms with mash potatoes is unmatched in San Antonio. Enjoy!

Mamas is the best breakfast my family has ever had. Every thing about this establishment speaks home made down home goodness.

Haven't been in years and I wont be rushing back. Fried mushrooms are still good, as was the chicken fried chicken. Mashed potatoes were thin and tasted funny. Green beans and meatloaf were just okay. The worst part was the service. Our waitress seemed uninterested and never cleared away the dishes from the appetizer.

The only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating is the interior is often not quite clean enough for me. Burgers are awesome. Great choices of sides. My favorite is the Electric Pig..a ham sandwich that is served hot and is just yummy (makes me want to go get one now!!). I also LOVE their fried mushrooms and the portion is LARGE so sometimes I will just order that. It comes with gravy or ranch dressing. Take out is always presented nice (not just thrown in the container). They are usually very busy so don't be surprised if there is a wait. Their desserts always sound great but I am always so full I never have room.

We were a party of eight and sat in the back on Mother's Day. I decided to try the fajita taco salad and it would have been wonderful had I not had to spit out gristle with almost every bite. The meat was wonderfully flavored and the salad ingredient ratio was wonderful, it's just that it was a bad cut of meat. No one else had a problem with their food at the table everything looks great and there were no complaints except for our waitress. She was very bad. We ask for lemons for our iced tea as soon as she delivered the iced tea which was before she took our food order and we never got the lemons for the tea until we all had our meals. She brought out our meals in stages the first was for the people who had breakfast. Then it was for three other adults. And the children got their meals last. Children getting their meals last is not a good thing. She didn't really have skills and time management or customer service. She wasn't friendly she forgot one person ordered no gravy with gravy on the side.

Oh Mama's, it has been a long time. Too long. After a nice three day weekend to the Alamo City, I had to take the family here on Saturday night. Everyone wanted something different...I want a burger...I want Mexican Food...I want Chicken... well, problem solved. We went to Mama's. We arrived around 7:00pm and the place was steady but not busy. We were sat in a 4 top and started looking at the menu. I wont bore you with how many options you have, but they have something for everyone. We started with the fried Mushrooms and they were great. Not the frozen kind, but the made from scratch kind. I ordered the CFS large order, "Country Style, with sides of Mac and Cheese and mashed potatoes. My daughter had the Enchiladas Gringas, my son (who wanted a burger) ordered the Chicken Royale Sandwich with fries and Rings, and my wife had the Blackened Tilapia Creole and we all loved it! We all had pies for dessert (The blackberry ala mode was my favorite). The service was great and deserved her 25% tip. We also came back the next night and we all ordered the same thing! It was great the next night too! See you in December Mama's.

Searching for a restaurant serving a late breakfast I Googled "Best breakfast places near me" when Mama's Café popped up. Suffice it to say I was not disappointed rather blown away by the Eggs Benedict Mexicana, friendly service, reasonable prices and FANTASTIC atmosphere. This place has it all, excellent seating, wooden booths, a room in the back for private conversations, colorful bar, very nice. Totally unexpected but very appreciated. Although there for breakfast, it appears their happy hour is among the best in the city.

We were in town visiting my brother and his family for 2 days prior to visiting this establishment. Together, we made up a group of 11 which proved hard to find a restaurant that was willing to accept reservations for this size of a group. Not Mama's Cafe! They gladly accepted the reservation and the table was set up and ready when we arrived. The restaurant is clean with fun, creative decor. Our waiter was very attentive and personable. Menu had a great selection and food was quality and tasty! We will definitely be back!

I just got home from going to the Mama's Cafe at 2442 Nacogdoches Rd., San Antonio, Tx, and had the worst experience ever! I got rotten avocado (guacamole) on my chicken chalupas so it ruined my appetite and I left the food on the plate. I complained but the mgr only gave me 99 cents off my bill saying it was the best they could do! It's not the money that matters but out of common courtesy seeing I left the food on the plate he should have just deducted the plate from my bill. I only went to Mama's because it was closer to where I live than Chacho's Restaurant, which is about 4 miles farther, but I should have gone there instead!! Chacho's the best mexican food in San Antonio, in my opinion and thousands of others I am sure. And as for Mama's Cafe... lesson learned, NEVER AGAIN! I hope you reading this will spend your time and money somewhere else so you don't have a horrible experience like I did. :)

Went with 4 couples! Wonderful chicken fried steak, meatloaf and awesome chicken tortilla soup! Service was wonderful and prices excellent! Huge portions, Great chocolate cake for dessert!

Mama's has great food. Good San Antonio vibe. But, their coffee is FANTASTIC!!! It is cinnamon coffee. Great prices and good service. I come to San Antonio a lot and try to come every time I visit. Breakfast is SO GOOD!!!

We visited refreshed & reopened Mama's Cafe Saturday evening and enjoyed delicious, fresh dishes from the past. Famous fried mushrooms. Chicken fried steak & gravy with 2 sides of broccoli & creamed spinach. Hamburger steak with onion gravy with mashed potatoes & green beans. We ended our meal with Cappy's famous warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Reasonably priced great food and enjoyable evening.

I have been here 4 or 5 times over visits to San Antonio the past three years. Usually eat breakfast here. Good variety on the menu and service is good. On my last visit I noticed that the place is trending a little downhill relative to their food quality.

We enjoyed our Sunday dinner...as much as possible with a 5-year-old and almost 3-year-old. Our server was efficient and friendly and has worked at Mama's for 9 years The menu was clean.. Not sticky with crusty food attached. Nice variety. No one had any complaints about the good ordered, and everyone was happy with the taste of their dinners. The restaurant was neat and clean ... until we arrived!

This little gem is nestled off of Nacodoches and the 410 loop. We stopped for breakfast during our last minute trip to the Alamo. The menu is interesting with quirky meal names. We tried the "Helluva Mess" breakfast plate and it was definitely interesting. It's a stacked breakfast with hash browns, eggs, sausage gravy, with bacon or sausage. Our waitress, Xochitl, was so sweet and made sure we were taken care of the whole meal. The fresh squeezed orange juice is sweet and tangy. Definitely a must stop for breakfast in the mornings!

Dinner banal for brunch: dishes like those found everywhere. The restaurant stands out especially for its front and dinner side. Award for money bof.

Fun atmosphere, good food and great margatitas. Enjoying the surrounding company and very clean atmosphere.

I just love this place. It is very nostalgic and takes me back to the 60's. It is a very cozy place, the service is outstanding and the food is excellent. Generous portions of diner type food that will definitely satisfy anyones appetite. You have to try the breakfast skillet that has potatoes, gravy, eggs and cut up pieces of chicken fried steak!!! Coffee is always fresh and they keep it coming…...

After a long day of running errands we needed to get a bite to eat. We saw Mama’s Cafe and decided to stop there. There were a few families at the cafe and we were seated very quickly. The menu has many meal choices to choose from as well as a daily menu board. Our first choice was a half order of fried mushrooms. Additionally we ordered a Texas size chicken fried steak with sides and shared it. We enjoyed our dinner tremendously and would definitely come back to Mama’s Cafe.

We took the kids for I wanted a salad and fried mushrooms. Never realized the kids menu was only fried items until I had the Grandkids. They could have a veggie instead of fries but still all the other was fried. Wish they had something that was a healthy option for them as well.

I'm in San Antonio for work, so my lunchtime is limited. So luckily we discovered Mama's cafe. We were seated promptly and they had a lunch crowd. Granted, it was close for comfort; as if they want more seat over client comfort. They have daily specials, today it was spaghetti, but I ordered the 1/2 sandwich with the soup. Turkey melt and chicken tortilla soup. Our waitress seemed experienced and was good handling a large crowd. That is a good thing now-a-days. We received our food hot and ready to eat. I really enjoyed their tortilla soup. It's been a while since I've had a decent tortilla soup. it came with all the fixings: cheese, avocado, and pico so you could add it to your taste. It's not spicy for my palate; but it was hot and yummy. It came with 1/2 of a turkey melt as I picked and the turkey melt was delicious as well. I would have gone with that 1/2 alone as it's a well sized portion. They add lettuce, tomato, pickle, and red onions on the side. I really enjoyed this meal as it was not to large (still large, just not too large...LOL) and not too small that you walk out still hungry. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Mama's and am looking forward to going back. I'd like to try their desserts.

If that's what you like this is your place. The decor and the food are authentic. It is spotless, cobbled together and colorful. The service was less than friendly which I felt went with their vibe a bit so fine. The food was the sloppy beans, rice and unidentifiable, saucy wrapped meats, cheese and I don't know what. It tastes good but I have decided it's not my thing. The place was packed and it was very cheap.

My daughter and I loved this place!! We started out with chips and salsa and played the jukebox during the entire visit!!! I had the pork chops and my daughter had the chicken fried steak (HUGE)!! Everything was delicious!!! Our waiter, Jeff, was the best!!!! Will definitely eat here again in the future!!!

Drinks & comfort food to perfection! Mgmt, staff, & bartenders are the best! It's like a away from home with all the best sports & Spurs action.

Mama's is another of my regular stops when I'm visiting San Antonio. I just really enjoy the whole Mama's Cafe vibe. Super friendly wait staff delivering excellent service and making you feel right at home. Eggs are cooked perfectly to order and pancakes just melt in your mouth. Best of all, it all comes at a great price. It's nothing fancy but it's a great comfort food cafe with consistently good food. Some say the food is a bit bland but nothing a little salt and pepper to your own liking won't resolve.

Went here for lunch the other day and just had a poor experience overall. I sat for a while before anyone came to my table. Food took a bit to come out and they were not that busy (this place used to be full at lunch time). I had the Chicken Royale sandwich. It had a half inch thick slice of red onion on it. I love onions but a half inch slice on a sandwich is too much, it was as thick as the chicken. It then had grilled onions on it and was supposed to have grilled mushrooms, there were lots of thick grilled onions and 3 mushrooms. Then as I finished my meal a roach ran across the table and I killed it. I talked to the manager about my experience, as I seldom have complaints but this time I had to say something. Manager apologized and I he took care of the cost of my meal. They need to work on becoming the Mama's they used to be!

We’ll the employees are having a great time, so much so that they ignore the customers. Probably not coming back.

It had been a few years since we went to this restaurant. A coupon prompted our visit and we were so glad it did. The food was great and the portions were plentiful. I had the meatloaf and my husband had the chicken-fried steak. We shared fried mushrooms and they, along with everything else, were delicious. We also got cornbread and it was very good. The service was outstanding with our waitress making sure to refill our teas promptly with a smile. The place has a great family atmosphere and we left very full with plenty of leftovers.

we try and get to this place since the other ones on the west side closed down. We go there for the Fried Mushrooms of course but the Chicken Fried Chicken is also a hit after the Mushrooms.

Yesterday we ate here and I ordered the Broiled Chicken with rice pilaf and green beans. The chicken was tough; the green beans were NOT crisp, and they were over-salted and the rice was just plain gross. I am very disappointed in Mama's; the meal that I had was terrible. However, my daughter's sandwich was good and so were the fries. My wife had soup and 1/2 sandwich and it was ok. I would have given a rating of Poor, but because my wife and daughter were satisfied; I am giving an Average rating. Come-on Mama's your food should be consistent, always, as it was in the past. the waiter was great; efficient and friendly.
Mama's Cafe is our second kitchen...i.e. we eat there a lot!
The server's are great, the cooks are wonderful, the bar tender is fast, there is a great variety of home style entrees with daily specials. My favorite is the lemon pepper trout we also love the sancho panza that is a jalapeño stuffed chopped steak. Don't pass up the most excellent carrot cake which you should have warmed slightly to bring out the flavors! The bar is fast and has a good variety. Oh and if you want a snack the fried mushrooms and cheese sticks are really tasty. The grandkids love the mac n cheese!
