To smoke or not smoke?

By Ticoboy |

This tavern started almost almost 60 years ago when almost everybody who drank also smoked. Just my opinion , but I think they should be applauded for giving their still living regulars a place to still smoke, drink, and be unhasseled happy as long as they pay their bar tab. We who have never or no longer smoke are happy to be served our favorite libations and munchies in the non- smoking dining rooms

My good memories of Manuel's are gone.

Stood at entrance, then over in table area to see if we could/should seat ourselves. Finally asked - yes. Thanks! We sat ourselves. Very nice server came over later. She was the high point of the entire visit. Salmon with pineapple & jalapenos was good but the meat loaf was the worst taste in my mouth ever. Appears that they must take a big hamburger and GRILL it with the definite GRILL taste. (Grill marks all over it, too) Then they crumble it up a little and pour tomato sauce on it. Like magic it is meatloaf. Only two bites taken by one of us and one bite by the other. We both gagged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Won't return. If you go, hopefully the hotdogs are still good here but we'll have to take your word for it.

We only had drinks

By thetinman56 |

We wanted to see how the place looked after the renovations that took place earlier this year. Looked about the same but the absence of the smoky smell was noticeable and appreciated. We went (accidentally) on the day Bill Clinton had been there so the remnants of the crowd had the place still packed. We sat a table but had to serve ourselves from the bar because the wait staff was nowhere to be found. Still, it wasn't a big problem...it's just how that place rolls sometimes.....

This wonderful town favorite watering hole was where I met my wife. Like any other iconic local establishment it hasn't changed much in fifty years and I love it. Great beer and decent food--what more do you need?

Great Place for an Event!

By Heather P |

I chose this establishment to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday party. They had excellent communication and were accommodating to all of our needs. The food was great. The beer and drink selections are always wonderful and please a wide range of palates. Then there was our server. I was already perfectly happy. But she was so wonderful and made the party so relaxing and fun. By the end of the night we were claiming her as one of our own. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, bar, and event space. In my several experiences I can say that you are very likely to be happy. Great job Manuel's! Thank you!!

Love me a local dive bar!

By Joseph S |

Need a cold beer, funky decor and freindly service? At a fair price? Then you want to make your way to this little gem. More silly fun items, beer cans and bottles than you can see in one trip strewn about around the bar. A great first stop on a recent bar crawl!

A lovely stop.

By DaveLipp |

I've been to this place twice and it's always (always out of two?) friendly and delicious. The people and the food, that is. Important city figures dine here, but it's still nice. Pronouned, Manual's, as the gentlemen in Lebanese, not Latino. Go figure.

Reserved parking for the Clergy

By Harry A |

Since 1956, a bastion of political conversation in Atlanta. Let's get a burger and a brew, both reasonably priced and more than filling. There really are "reserved for clergy" parking spots at the rear of the tavern. See photo. A must stop if you really are an Atlantan and have any sense of history at all! The essence of a real neighborhood bar without the ferns and glitz. Highly recommended as a "must see" stop.

Great food even greater service!

By tyjojoko |

My family of four ate lunch here. The sweet potato casserole was amazing! They didn't have a kids menu but food choices for kids were available. Melanie was our server and she was GREAT!

Atlanta's Saloon of Saloons

By Trey S |

You walk into Manuel's Tavern and the first thing you see is a Saloon...not some swanky-fu-fu nightclub; not some modern niche wine and liquor tasting bar; not some gastro cafe; and not a dive. No, MT's is a saloon; 60+ year old smoke stained original wood walls and benches; countless artifacts lining the walls - paintings, old beer cans, photos of celebrities, presidents and patrons, even of Manuel; old college pendants with 50 years of dust; at least 3 urns, and the center of attention...is the bar, as it should be. Nothing fancy; just a long saloon-style bar. It is why MT is there; it is why I am there; it is why you should be there. Serving it up since 1956, Manuel's Tavern is full of history and local vibe. They have a decent bar menu, and separate dining rooms. But for me, its the saloon that makes Manuel's Tavern one of my favorites, and one of Atlanta's more famous watering holes.

Off the beaten path

By Tim O |

My brother used to frequent this place when he worked downtown Atlanta. He hasn't been there for years and wasn't sure if it was open but it was. Lot of history here, it was a political hang out in the day. Nice lunch menu, I had the rib tip special which was good at a fair price. 42 beers on tap and friendly server.

Good food / selection

By 2012dae |

We came across this restaurant by chance trying to find some place near the jimmy carter museum for lunch. First off plenty of free parking which is rare in atlanta! The restaurant is dated but has a great atmosphere. It does need to have some update/ cleaning. The menu is varied and good! We ordered chicken sandwich , beer cheese soup, French Dip and Philly cheesteak...all were large and very delicious! I would recommend this place for a casual lunch.

Come for the Beer, Stay for the Company

By stp0707 |

As Atlanta's headquarters for liberals, leftists and open thinkers alike, Manuel's Tavern is full of history and atmosphere. The walls are plastered with memorabilia and the bar is where Carter's watch party came to await the results in the 1980 election (I'm sure Manuel's sold a lot of beer that night). The bar's beer list is extensive and features brews from Georgia and a number of different countries. The food is good, but I go to Manuel's primarily to have a stimulating discussion and be around like-minded people. Although the bar will close temporarily in early 2016 for renovations, promises have been made to keep it the way it is, and that makes all of us happy.

Big group good service good food

By et7351 |

Enjoyed lunch with about 60 friends. Yes we were expected and had a nice room to ourselves. Our servers were very efficient. They handled this large group well. My food was great. Everyone in the group said they enjoyed their food also. This is a restaurant that is well established in Atlanta.

Atlanta Landmark

By Jim M |

Manuel's Tavern is an Atlanta landmark. In one year it will be 60 years old. The food is good and now they serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The memorabilia on the walls is worth a visit to see in itself. Very good service.

Just ok

By Millette J |

We went here for a late dinner after a concert. We were staying at the Highland Inn just a block away. The tavern has a nice enough atmosphere. It is bigger than it looks from the outside. Plenty of places to sit, lots of tv's, good friendly vibe. For 10:30pm on a Thursday it was pretty busy with people having meals and groups eating and drinking. We had beans and rice, which was cheap and ok tasting. The beans seemed canned. We also had the bbq sandwich with steak fries. I wouldn't recommend the bbq, it was sliced meat, I suppose pork but I really couldn't say for sure, covered in a pretty tasty, tangy, bbq sauce. I've had better, much better. The fries were good and we had a New Belgium Choco Mole which was good if you like cinnamon flavored beer. Service was adequate and friendly. Prices were on par with other places like this, $25 for two beers, a dinner and a soup. There was an extensive menu and I wonder if they wouldn't do better by perfecting a few good dishes rather than offering a bunch of stuff that's just...meh.

Still Fabulous

By Bill P |

Great to return to the haven of artistic passion. I havent been here in many years and was delighted to savor the welcoming vibes. Our sever, David, was wonderful; always available but never annoying hovering. The atmosphere warmed and mirrored my memories. It hasnt changed. The food was prompt and delicious. Manuel's is fabulous

Never disappoints

By Tim M |

Many times while I'm Atlanta I eat a Manuel's. Everything I'm there the service is great and friendly, and the food is very good. The serving size a big and the prices are the best in town for the amount of food. It's a great place if your in a party of 2 or a party of 10.

DO NOT Reserve Private events with them

By savmiller892017 |

I have booked Manuel's twice for private events. The one pro here is that they allow you to reserve a room for up to 80 people for free. The down? They are outright rude and only staff one waiter. The first time we went, we reserved for 80 people. When the event started however, they only had one waiter for the entire room. When it was taking the poor waiter a long time to get our drink orders (because 1:80 is a rough ratio), people started making their way to the bar where they were very rudely turned away by a VERY rude bar tender. When I went up to her to discuss, she pretty much blamed it on "whoever made the reservation for 30 people." When I told her that it was me who made the reservation and that I had made it for 80, she basically told me it was my fault for not being clear enough. So the next time my group needed a space about 6 months later I figured I would try again and this time follow-up on the '80 people' part. We showed up, albeit about 30 minutes late, and again one waiter. When people started making their way to the bar, again they were turned away by this very same rude bartender. I again went to talk to her (deja vu) and she told me it wasn't her fault the group was late. We were 30 minutes late. And we booked the place until closing (midnight). Long story short, she essentially stopped serving us at the bar and gave everyone a "one more drink cap" at about 11 PM, 1 hour before closing. The only nice thing I have to say is that the waiter, bless his heart, was a GEM and tried so hard to get us what we ordered quickly. The rude bartender (I believe a new-ish manager) should be fired.

Perfect for Re-Uniting with Friends

By Gina G |

I had contacted Manuel's Tavern for a get-together with friends. I had reserved a table for 10, possibly 16 people. The young lady, Margie, was nice enough to keep email contact with me about the evening that we needed. When we arrived, a server immediately helped us out and my friends arrived within 15 minutes to find us easily. We had plenty of room to walk around to each other, plenty of space to eat at the two tables and we really enjoyed our evening. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was just right. Much thanks to Margie and the Tavern for making our night that much better (and my husband's first night in Atlanta that much more special)!

Great lunch place

By StevenHScher |

I had lunch with a group of friends. This is a pub type atmosphere. Lot's of Tv's. The service is excellent. The menu is extensive. I had the catfish fillet. It was served with hush puppies, fries, & Cole slaw. The dish was cooked perfectly & it was soft & tender. Our server Bill was great.

Very good food

By David908 |

I had the BBQ Pork Sandwich. It was very good. The waiter was quick, helpful and mindful of social distancing. You can sit outside, at a few table, if it is not raining.

Atlanta institution

By sweetapplej |

Manuel's has been here a long time, once owned by DeKalb commissioner Manuel Maloof. The food is always good and it's a good place for casual meetings. Used to be a hangout for journalists but not sure if that is still the case.

Great nachos

By tigg189074 |

My husband and I stopped here for a drink and app before we went to a comedy show up the street. We ordered a couple drinks and the nachos. The drinks were good (draft beer and a gin & tonic). The nachos were really good. The beer selection was great and the place seemed to attract a lot of locals.

Decent food in Atlanta

By Pawnee7 |

Another place we come when visiting our son and family in Atlanta. Why? -good service -variety of food -big parking lot (try parking in many downtown places) -reasonable prices -new nice digs with separate bar which keeps the noise down My son wanted a burger and theirs is good. I had a lamb gyro, granddaughter had a grilled cheese sandwich and my wife a salad. Bill including $5 tip $29.45

Still A Great BAR!!!!

By Hank G |

Moved from Atlanta to Savannah about 8 years ago. One of the few things I miss is Manuel's. Went there for lunch on a regular basis as well as after work. Was in Atlanta this week and had time to visit for dinner and drinks. Sat at the bar. It was like old times. Great burger, fries were hot and the beer was cold. Just a great to sit and look at all the neat stuff on the walls and ceilling. What a great place!

Consistent food with bonus music today

By CFAtlanta |

This was about our 5th visit to the tavern. The food is always good and my daughter tried the baby back ribs today. They were juicy and meaty with a Kansas City kind of sauce. My crab cake burger was awesome as always and we shared some Buffalo wings at the table. The only downside today was that our server was really quiet and seemed shy. He didn't tell us about the soup of the day and wasn't sure about the bottled sodas that we ordered. He did seem to know that they served a new version of a Jailhouse Brewery pale ale. The music surprise was in the form of some bluegrass fiddle players in the upper deck area. It kind of sounded like background music in a Civil War movie. I'll take live music anyway and any variety. Thanks!

Hip Neighborhood Place

Cool neighborhood place. Split French Dip was very good. Highly recommend the soup they had, a good vegetable almost stew type soup.

Funnies and good food

By Rachel B |

I attended a show for the improv comedy troupe Laughing Matters. The food was fabulous. I had the gyro with a cup of tomato bisque soup and fries. The gyro had feta cheese on it addition to the yummy cucumbers, onion, lettuce and tomato topped with tastes Tzatziki sauce. Best gyro I've had in years. While the tomato bisque was good, it needed salt. Other than the a/c being turned to freezing, it was an enjoyable experience overall. #laughingmatters

Neighborhood Bar

By jinksen |

My dads been going to this bar since he was kid...or maybe 21 or whatever. Anyway, they have plenty to choose from in the way of beer and bar food. But I chose the Reuben sandwich and it was awesome! They have fun things like trivia and what not and lots of sports channels to watch your favorite game. This bar is like 50 years old or something, my dad says there used to be a huge arcade room. Good times. Good, friendly environment.

It’s been awhile

Manuel’s was a dinner spot when I was in college, 28 years ago! I bought my kids there for lunch today and it was better than I remember!

All oldtime Atlantans frequent Manuels.

Met my wife there; now go back with grandkids. Good food; comfortable surroundings; plenty of beer. Unique and longstanding.

Gimme the Grill Cheese please!!

By judigraff |

Simply the most kicking grill cheese sandwich I have ever eaten. A must have along with an ice cold beer. My brother took me there on 10/4/2014 - I could have stayed all afternoon but we both had a wedding to attend in Macon later in the evening. When not eating, take a stroll through their liberal political time warp. Wonderful!!

Classic Neighbor Joint

By Flyrod929 |

This place has been here for a looooooong time - probably 40 or 50 years. Deep ties to old Atlanta and local democratic politics. Food is good; combo of traditional bar food and some "meat and three" items. Decor is rustic and may not be for all, but I really like it. Lots of photos around Atlanta from the 50's. If you have never been here you owe it to yourself to go at least once.

Hidden Treasure near Moreland and Ponce!!

By angelaaverett |

We had dinner here last night and it was delicious. What really struck me was the incredible good service. We overheard three servers and they were all upbeat, positive, helpful and engaging with the customers. The menu is very diverse and the food excellent. This is a must try restaurant near Decatur and Little Five Points!

Just what we wanted.

By daskysdalimit |

Looking to sit down, relax and eat some comforting food we asked the guards at The Jimmy Carter Center if they could recommend a restaurant. Without hesitation they told us about this great historic tavern within walking distance from the museum and for that we are grateful. Upon walking in we felt the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Pick any table you like and sit yourself they said. It was an early dinner and there were a number of available places to sit both in the bar area and in the large dining room. We chose the dining room and quickly had a friendly waitress handing us a menu with plenty of pub food and drink choices. We had the Manuel burger which was tasty and came with some steak fries and the Crabcake sandwhich that was also served with fries and a delicious spicy tartar sauce. A simple appetizer of fresh made chips and guacamole was a great beginning. They have a wide selection of craft beers. I had a nice light and crisp pils that was served very cold. All in all a great experience. Delicious food, good service and comfy atmosphere at a reasonable cost. When in ATL again we will return.

Great lunch, great service, great atmosphere

By StevenHScher |

I joined some friends for lunch. This was only my second visit since the remodel. It's the same old Manuel's but a nicer look. I had the Manuel's burger. It was cooked exactly as ordered & was scrumptious. It was served with steak fries which were okay, they could have been hotter the server was great. She was very attentive & kept checking back with us. The prices are very reasonable & they have a nice extensive menu with daily specials. You can't go wrong at Mamie Tavern.

An Oldie But Still a Goodie

By 1073BB |

We've been coming here for years and stopped in today (Saturday) for a late bite of lunch to discover that they are now serving brunch until 2 p.m. Looking at the menu, which features a rotating special (today’s was shrimp ‘n grits for $10.95) I suddenly got hungry for breakfast. I chose the platter ($8.95) with two link sausages (really good), two pancakes (large and looked heavy but were light and fluffy), two fried eggs (perfect over-medium), and half a ruby grapefruit (just right). My only gripe is if there are two pancakes why not serve two of the tiny packaged butters. The syrup also came in packaged plastic, another no-frills approach. But then, one does not come to Manuel’s for fine dining but to savor the real-deal neighborhood bar atmosphere, chow down on the reliably casual grub and soak up the nostalgia of 51 years as a meeting place for the city’s Democratic politicos (original owner Manuel Maloof was a county commissioner of that persuasion, but Republicans, Libertarians and all other stripes also welcome), journalists, university profs and students, families, and even monthly reunions of high school grads…from the 60s and 70s. Last year’s renovation (more a necessary gutting and updating of the kitchen) has left the dining areas intact in all their now-faux-grubby, picture-hung glory. Otherwise, the regulars would have screamed bloody murder and betrayal. The menu has been expanded and freshened with a few healthier items added to the old standbys—something for everyone. My husband had the regular-menu crab cake on a kaiser roll—a real mouthful and he enjoyed every big bite of it. Our waitress was the friendliest, happiest, most good-natured person I have run into in a long time. Vive Manuel’s!

The best tavern in Atlanta, a top 25 in the country

By 2deer |

An Atlanta institution. Good, honest pub fare with some nice suprises thrown in. Vast bar (drinks) options. Servers have been there forever, you know they treat people right. Popular with cops, politicians, in-town hipsters, blue-collars, and families. Not the place for right-winger, tea-party attitudes (thankfully).

Great food great atmosphere

By di |

We walked here from the Jimmy Carter center and the food was great, there were a lot of local beers on tap. Jimmy Carter used to visit here and even had a New Year’s Eve party high.

THe Debates, Supper and a hard cider.........

By Mary T |

Perfect evening, except for the too vocal person at the next table. Had JJ's special burger but switched the bread from wheat to rye. Fantastic. Fries are steak fries and so good. NOt sure what they fry them in, but dont stop! We were a group of 6 there for suuper and watching the democratic debates. Great selection of beers, but I decided on a hard cider. It was cold and crisp. Perfection in a glass. AND Our waitstaff guy was the best. The place was jammed but he was right on the spot!

First time back since the renovations

By jcandy455 |

Recently the establishment that defines Atlanta, or at least the Highlands area of town, has been there forever and has recently been renovated. That which was wonderful is still there, and that which needed upgrading has been upgraded.... New bathrooms and Old ones made new, and a new kitchen... Same old bar and booths, all this means nothing if you have never been there, but everything if you have wonderful memories of times gone by. Most importantly, the food and beverages are the same if not better. The atmosphere is also genuine and in tact.... Had a great lunch and the Rubin even as I asked to be modified to toasted and not grilled, we perfect.... It made my old heart sing.... Thanks folks, great job of preserving an Atlanta Landmark...

Good meeting place

By Flyrod929 |

Atlanta Fly Fishing Club meets here. Always a fun place with better than average food. Really like the old pictures and signs. Truly a back in the day classic. Worry what new place will be like. Hope it is not much different.

Great food and a great atmosphere

By A Tripadvisor Member |

I will start out by saying we were in a party of 20. They accepted our reservations with no problem and even have a coordinator to assist you. We were placed in the very spacious main dining area since the other various "side" rooms were booked out. The restaurant was very clean and did not smell of smoke (only the main bar area does). Most of our party ordered various meals and all the comments I heard on the food were positive. I really enjoyed my Gyro sandwich meal and the hot wings appetizer. My wife said the collard greens were some of the best she had ever had. The beer was ice cold and the service was excellent. Plenty of free parking is available for this restaurant. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant.

Great Old Joint

By Kevin C |

I visited Manuel's for an organization meeting. They provide free meeting space to Clubs, etc, so that is AWESOME! They have an excellent assortment of beer, wine, cider, and the like. The food was excellent! We had roast beef, macaroni, and cheese, and garlic mashed potatoes - all excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive! This is a great place and I'll be going back!

An Atlanta Institution

By Fred_PA_2000 |

Came here after visiting the Carter Center -- just 4 or 5 blocks away. Free parking and decent food at reasonable prices. An Atlanta institution, this is where the political and press types (are reputed to still) gather -- the owner for 50 years was known as the godfather of Democratic politics in Georgia. We had the Brunswick Stew (a house specialty) followed by the Ribeye dinner for me and the Prime Rib for my wife. Both were serviceable -- a little fatty and a little grey for medium rare -- but for $16.50 not bad at all. We saw several families with small children: It's a good choice for them -- they can hardly hurt the plain / almost-grubby furnishings, and the place has an extensive selection of burgers, sandwiches, hotdogs, and bar snack food / appetizers to keep almost any kid happy. The decor is old-time tavern / bar and the many patrons all seem to be enjoying themselves. Maybe it's more than 3 stars.

Friendly place with comfort Food

Friendly place, great staff and very good comfort Food...an Atlanta Icon since 1956. Great for large groups or small!

"It Ain't No Brass & Fern Bar!"---Manuel Maloof (1924-2004)

By dgbader |

One of the best bars ever. In fact, Jimmy Breslin (who certainly knows bars) once said Manuel's is the only bar outside New York City that he likes. In addition to having an amazing selection of beers---bottled and on tap---their nachos are second to none. When you visit Atlanta, it's a must-go-to place.

Still Getting their Feet Firmly Planted

By TombRaider55 |

As the long-time Manuel's fans are aware, it has been closed for renovations for an extended time. Manuel's has been a favorite of mine for over 40 years. The new Manuel's preserves much of the old atmosphere that made Manuel's unique in the Virginia Highland area. The restaurant is still operating in "training mode," since many of the former employees have moved on to other positions. In this mode, the hours vary and the menu is abbreviated. But, former patrons will still be comfortable. The servers still haven't quite found their groove. But, they are obviously trying hard to get there. The food is familiar, but not quite up to the old standard yet. I feel confident that everything will be humming again before too much longer. But, for now expect it be more like a brand new restaurant.

Enjoy this local treat

Tasty food and prompt service. Very nice atmosphere. The inside is unexpected from the exterior of the building. Within walking distance to the Carter presidential library.

First Class Staff for a First Class Tavern

By Princeton101st |

It is obvious that Manuel's Tavern continues to be a community gathering place as the Young Democratic Party was having a meeting in one large room. I was holding a political television watch party and it was a superb venue. One of my good friends had the Baby Back Ribs and they were simply fall off the bone tender. I had the crab cake sandwich which was satisfactory as bar food, it will likely improve as the staff gets into a rhythm. Manuel's is still operating on a reduced schedule so most of the staff is getting to know each other. There is plentiful parking and it is free, well-lighted, and clean. My friends enjoyed the beer. My server was superb. She was attentive and cheerful. Once the chef refines the crab cake, that was a little over cooked, this will be a great place for me. All of the other bar food looked terrific.

Tavern feels just right

By HelenDEB |

Ended up here for a late lunch after touring downtown Atlanta. Lots of parking outside nd tables inside to accomodate crowds. During our visit there was a steady flow of diners, but not overly. Music was provided by what seemed to be a "pick up" band of local musicians. Great choice of beer and sandwiches. Looks like a fun place to meet friends and hang out. We look forward to going back when we're in Atlanta next.

Not impressed

By ChilliLondon |

We ate here after arriving late into Atlanta. The place was buzzy enough and our waitress was nice no problem with service at all I just found the food a let down, I had the chicken Philly sub which was soggy and not very exciting with dry pieces of chicken and a very bland like warm Mac and cheese which I make better myself. We also had the pulled pork roll which was very fake bbq tasting, I'd go back for a drink only.

Great place for food and history

By RJ6486 |

What an awesome bar. Went with a group of friends and had a great time. You could spend hours looking at all the history on the walls. The food was terrific and drinks were cold. Wait staff was top notch. We all had differnt items and they were all good. Can't miss with this place

So easy to catch up with friends

By DecadePlusFanOfCanoe |

For 17 years we would meet once a month at manuals on the first Tuesday of the month with a Mens group at Manuals Tavern jus to make sure we had a great meal/beer and wouldn't fall out of touch . Then we all had kids and got distributed around the city and didn't get to make the trip for a few years. But sure enough I met a couple guys two months ago along with a new friend and so we went with the old standby. Still a great easy meal in a super laid back friendly atmosphere for hanging out and having a beer and a conversation. Good to know a few things really never change

Cold beer and decent food

First time that I have gone here and I enjoyed it. Got a couple of beers and double cheeseburger with onion rings. Actually was pretty good. Service was good as well and the beer was cold.

Manuel's Tavern is a fantastic place!! It is a great pub for having dinner and drinking very good beer with your friends.

Down Home Service and Food

By Hokies44 |

A friend and I stopped by one evening after an outing of tennis. I decided to try the lemon pepper wings. The wings were fried too hard and were not flavorful. I would not get them again. However, I have been here before and ate the lasagna. The lasagna was tasty so next time I will skip the wings for the lasagna or a burger, which seems to be more of their specialty. Our server was absolutely wonderful. She was very friendly and attentive so just for that I will return soon. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very homey and comforting.

Great Food with a Relaxed Atmosphere

By Dawg099 |

Highly recommended. Unique foods and the usual fare. Try the grilled blackened tuna sandwich. Great photos covering the walls of Atlanta from years past.

Consistent, Best ribs with Great Beer Selections

By snellvillegirl |

This will be one review I do not include photos of food. Why, because every time I go there I am in the moment, enjoying the conversation, atmosphere and the food. I just enjoy the whole experience so much I don't even think of a review until I leave. We go here often, it is a perfect meeting place to see friends, enjoy good food and craft beer with that great neighborhood vibe. They still have a "Smoking Bar" which I hate, but the smokers all love it. In the dining areas, and private rooms you can escape the smokers, watch a game or just catch up. Their craft beer selection is top notch and I always get their dark draft Leinenkugel Creamy Dark Lager. Fabulous!! All their food is good, but their ribs are fantastic so I always get them. I really enjoy the decor, it has a lot of history on the walls and the people who come in can be quite intriguing, as last Saturday I met quite a famous author. I love everything about this place, and it has a parking lot! Yeah! You have to check out this Atlanta Institution!! Highly recommended.

This is a great place, and quite the fixture in Atlanta. The beer menu is extensive, but the food is also quite good and enough variety to keep you coming back.

An ATL classic lovingly restored

By Ken L |

I saw more time at Manuel's back in the 80's than I should admit to. And I've stopped in many times over the years since moving away. It has always been a steadfast buddy. Simple, honest, unaffected, friendly, and always there. Well, not always. It recently closed for renovation but now it is back open. Basically, it looks like the same place just spruced up. They even managed to get pretty much all the old stuff back up on the walls just as they were before. Seemed to have up the wattage of the lighting, however, a poor decision which should be reversed. Even spruced up, Manuel's is a bit of a dive bar and people want dives to be dim and murky, not a place to see and be seen. As always, you don't go to Manuel's for the food. Oh, you'll find serviceable options, the simpler the better and for the price the food's fine. But Manuel's is a place to meet a couple buddies, knock back a couple beers in an unpretentious atmosphere. Or strike up a conversation with the person at the next bar stool. That's what it is and that's what it has always been.

Classic Tavern ~ Hidden Gem

By FebTravelGuide |

Use to catch a drink here over 30 years ago. Visited. Last night and it was excellent. Preservation contiues and history continues to be made in this Hidden Gem that has been visited by Many Presidents and Celebrities over the years. It was spaghetti Night and we notices several families, many locals that you could tell had been coming for years. Nostalgia at its best with an enjoyable meal and good service.

This place is great for crowds. It's spacious and casual and great to hold special events or have a casual meeting. The food is also delicious and affordable.

Great food

By Michael M |

Being from the Buffalo area originally they have the best chicken wings I have found in the south. Other food was great too. Neat little place that has history.

Very fun, historic place

Casual dining, music played at night. You'll love looking around at all the decorative items. Great food and drinks. Welcoming atmosphere and great service. Unforgettable place

Friendly neighborhood tavern. Excellent salmon salad, burgers, and onion rings. Varied beers and drinks. Reasonable prices!

Old Does Not Equal Charming

By roneill000 |

Because the late owner was something of a local legend there is a perception among some that the place exudes all kinds of charm and character. The truth is that this is one step-maybe a half step- above a dingy dive bar. I stopped going with friends who, for some reason, liked the joint. After hearing Manuel's take on politics I needed a joint without a blue state kind of attitude. I'm no TEA party fanatic, but this guy was slightly to the left of Fidel Castro and not afraid to let you know it. Proceed north a couple blocks for much better food and atmosphere or a different dive bar without politics.

Ready for redo

By Flyrod929 |

After eating here off and on for several years, it will close for major renovation near end of year. Will miss old place but in looking around, it is time for a major renovation. Food is good for bar food. Am looking forward to what the new place will look like. Hope it won't lose all its charm but it's time for an upgrade!

Awful Service

By Tom A |

I've been going to Manuel's for over 40 years. It isn't what it used to be. Saturday lunch was at 1:00pm, not much of a crowd. Yet, the service was just awful. We needed a table for six, and the server who "greeted" us told us as she was hurrying by to just sit wherever. When I said I needed a table for six, she yelled back, "Just find one!" Okay. After our server came by to take drink orders, he completely skipped two of the six people. I was never offered a refill of my watered down Old Fashion (it was actually clear, like water), or offered anything else to drink. Our group came to the conclusion the server was stoned. The "special" tasted like it had been prepared the day before. Like I said, the place just ain't what it used to be. Our next lunch gathering won't be at Manuel's Tavern. All good things must eventually come to an end.

You're a "local" even when you're from out of town

By Dick O |

Outstanding tavern food and top notch service in an historic Atlanta neighborhood spot just doesn't get any better. Our recent visit was midday Saturday when the brunch menu was still available. Eggs cooked to absolute perfection; home fries with just the right touch of peppers and onions and cooked to a golden brown; cooked to order crispy bacon had my wife planning a return visit. I went for the lunch fare with and outstanding fresh medium rare burger on perfectly grilled wheat toast with Swiss and American cheese. Beer selections generously cover great craft taps, regional brews and national favorites. If there's one local pub stop you're going to make in Atlanta . . .this is it!

A hidden gem and a must visit.

By Greg P |

The atmosphere and history are one of the delights of this place. Food was plentiful and good. The full bar and craft selection was an added benefit.Sit back and enjoy the nostalgia and take in all the different items on the walls. I would not hesitate to recommend or to return.

Good neighborhood bar

By Roberta5261 |

We stopped by here for a beer on a warm evening. Inside we had a good, cold beer and watched the Braves. Pecan pie al a mode was good. Pleasant service.

A must for anybody who lives in Atlanta

By 596freyah |

Manuel's has been going strong for more than six decades. It is a fixture in its neighborhood, a place that reeks with history. The decor gives the feel of a long-established bar, and just about any place inside can be cozy. Food is quite good, and beer selection is impressive. Service is quite good - those wait-people are well-trained. Sit at the bar, at a table, in a booth and enjoy not just the food and beverages but also the atmosphere. It's almost a cross between a pub and a museum.

Fair

Burger was ok. My husband said the gyro was good. Daughter had chicken tenders. The fries were not good. Over cooked maybe old oil. Wouldn’t eat here again. The inside was nice a d the prices were good.

A Very Good Recommendation from a Friend

By Jerry M |

My wife and I stopped in here for dinner based on the recommendation of a friend. We were glad to have done so. Still relatively early in the evening, the place was packed, the larger rooms full of big parties occupying almost all of the tables. We spotted a lone booth just inside the entrance that we quickly grabbed where we made ourselves comfortable. We’d end up with a couple of rounds of beers, splitting the second one, with one of the best beers we’ve had in some time, a bourbon barrel aged version of a Prairie Artisan Ales Prairie Bomb, a 13% decadent descent into a coffee, chocolate, and vanilla bean taste sensation that had us searching for it later in the trip, successfully tracking down a bottle. For food we split a bowl of the soup of the day, delightful tomato bisque and a Cobb Salad (Grilled chicken, avocado, Applewood bacon, blue cheese crumbles, chopped egg, red onions, and tomatoes over fresh greens). All in all the food was good, a nice beer selection and very friendly service.

Fun brunch spot near Carter Library

By jenned17 |

This place has so much history and is an easy walk or drive from the Jimmy Carter Library and Carter Center, which my friend and I visited before brunch. Fun and casual atmosphere and the Monte Cristo special for brunch did not disappoint! Huge portion, fresh and tasty. The mimosas were unassuming (glass of OJ served with a mini bottle of champagne), but refreshing. Recommend checking out this Atlanta institution!

Great place and great selection

By Shaun B |

We met some friends here and we're very happy with the location and the selection of food. We had a very nice hummus appetizer and our entrees, chicken for me and a gigantic burger for my wife were delicious. Our friends had the NY strip which they said was cooked to perfection. We haven't tried the ribs, but each platter that went past made us consider them for next time. It's also a very short walk from the Highland Inn. We easily walked it as fast as if we had driven it.

great location in Atlanta

By Andrea S |

We went there after visiting the Carter Library and the guy we had as a waiter was really nice and I could tell he really enjoyed his job because he did give us good service and cared. That's one of the things I really watch for when I go out to eat is making sure the waiter is good and if they waiter is happy and likes their job. The food was also good and also we were there the day after President Obama ate at Manuel's after his long weekend visit to the South with his visit to the Selma Anniversary march in Alabama and then he came over to Atlanta to visit Georgia Tech. I also enjoyed the food and the ambience of the tavern restaurant. But if you are ever visiting Atlanta in the old historic 4th ward area its easy to get to this place from there.

Good Late-Night Grub

By Dora R |

This place is across the street from the Highland Inn, so any time I'm staying there overnight, I like to pay Manuel's a visit. They have very hearty sandwiches and a good beer selection, so that's more than good enough for me. I'd suggest getting their version of a gyro - it's delicious.

Always great food at Manuel’s.

By Doveswish |

Manuel’s Tavern is a nice place to eat and experience an old Atlanta landmark. The food is always good and the atmosphere is comfortable. When in Atlanta Manuel’s is our usual go to place. They also have a great selection of craft beers.

Great Food

By khammoc1 |

The food was excellent and the staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very clean and the atmosphere was nice. The burgers was one of the best I have ever had. They have a great selection of beer.

great atmosphere and service

By Minderhouts |

Loved the booth and the bar atmosphere.. wings were good and steak fries super yummy. The sauces (wing sauce and white remoulade for the crab cake sandwich) left something to be desired.

Politics Anyone?

By NUHusker |

We stopped here on our pub crawl & enjoyed our visit! There are lots of photos on the walls from political events & politicians & we were told it is a favorite hangout for talking politics. Drinks & the chicken wings were reasonably priced but the wings came out from the kitchen cold & not as spicy hot as we thought. It is a great place to people-watch, with lots of free parking. Convenient to lots of other destinations on our pub crawl.

Unfortunate experience

By Jennifer B |

Took the family after a strong recommendation. Part of our order was lost. Drinks never got refilled. Took over 30 minutes for the other part of our order. Took longer to get check.Maybe they are under staffed?? Whatever it was, it was not a good experience for us. Won't be back.:(

Average food average prices

By Pawnee7 |

While visiting son's family in Atlanta took our other son & wife here. Place was remodeled last year. Pretty nice now but food the same. Service usually ok. Had meatloaf. It was just ok. The mashed potatoes kind of dry. Decent flavor both. Rate a 2 1/2 of 5. The best was dessert-pecan pie a la mode. Dy-na-mi-te!! A 5. Wife had cheese sandwich with tomatoes. Eats like a bird. Says was ok. Son had chicken tender with fries.Said was good. 3+ out of 5. All that with wine $50 including tip. Not bad for amount food we got in a happy friendly atmosphere. Will keep coming.

Smoky, old, with little charm left

By mary c |

If you don't mind being ignored by pious bartenders in a musty, dank, cluttered place, then Manuel's is right for you. I worked down the street from Manuel's for two years, and served some of their employees during that time. Not that I should be given "carte blanche" because of that, but you would expect civility, right? Any time I walk into Manuel's I feel as if I am interrupting a secret meeting of old fogies, inconveniencing the staff with my presence, having eyes rolled at me if I dare to order food or drink. I do respect the fact that this bar has been around forever, but in this case, it may be time for a change. (of attitude at least)

Excellent lunch

By StevenHScher |

Met some friends for lunch at Manuel's. We hadn't been there in over a year due to Covid. The service was excellent. Our server, Julia, was great. I had the steak Quesadilla ($9.95). It was delicious, the steak was perfect. It was served with lettuce, tomato, sliced peppers, sour cream, & salsa. A good size portion. Parking was easy behind the restaurant. They now have some outdoor seating.

Atlanta's best pub

By StevenandSally |

Can't beat their menu for food and drink, A real bar with a wide selection of beer and liquor. Their daily specials are a treat. Their menu has something for everyone, including "homey" southern meals - a good brunswick stew. Large portions, friendly staff. Their is a reason customers consider it a tradition to met at the tavern.

One last visit before they take a hiatus to renovate.

By lonelypolecat |

Delighted to learn they are NOT closing or being sold despite rumors to the contrary. The land is being sold, but Manuel's will retain a long term lease under Maloof's ownership. They will simply have a new landlord. Renovation is to modernize a whole lot of outdated stuff one would expect to be outdated. Food here is not exceptional, but it's consistently good and a good value. One goes to Manuel's for tradition and atmosphere, not haute cuisine. I only hope the renovation is more of a "deep clean" and modernization of back office stuff. It would be tragic if the new version does not resemble the current place tens of thousands have come to know and love.

Spring Break lunch

By 943adriennee |

My son and I both had a burger. Both were perfectly cooked medium as ordered. My husband had the Ruben and thought it was great. My daughter had the grilled cheese and was so excited about the option to add on bacon. She loved it!! Staff was super friendly. Restrooms were very clean. No complaints.

Good food

Fun place. Typical tavern food selection and very yummy. Reasonably priced. Easy walking to Carter Center.

An Atlanta classic

By Joe L |

Reopened after a 6 month renovation, this ATL treasure since 1956 is still a great stop for food and interesting people watching. My wife and I stopped here for lunch on a busy Saturday afternoon. Parking was tight but we found a spot in their lot out back. Getting a booth took longer than normal but was worth the wait. Service seemed a little off but would blame it on the crowd and two private group parties. Our shrimp and corn chowder was good but not exactly hot. Our entrees of philly cheese steak and French drip were both very good. The steak fries are also always great here. Get a window seat if you can as the people watching on Highland is very entertaining.

Great brunch.

By L M |

We went here specifically to have a late Sunday breakfast. We hadn't been here in a long time. Things haven't changed. Still has dependable service and good food. Everything was delivered quickly and as ordered. The servers were friendly and polite.

Fun place!

By Ann |

The restaurant was really cool with lots of tables, booths, and space. Lots of TVs and sports memorabilia, with an old-timey saloon feel. A good menu with tasty bar food, perfect for a go-to lunch or dinner!

Great Brunch, Historical Venue

By sallygore |

Terrific local watering hole with excellent home cooking and a nice selection of local beers. I had grits, eggs, biscuit, and sausage along with a couple of very nice sour beers from nearby. It was very busy and thus the service a little bit slow (I was sitting at the bar), but nothing to complain about during a Saturday brunch time. I loved all of the political memorabilia and walkable location.

Local watering hole

By Keikidoc |

Was suggested to us by the security guard at the Carter Museum. A place where the local politicians used to hang out. Excellent service, great assortment of beverages and food was excellent too.

Sunday Night Trivia

By Ellen F |

Had the best time with a bunch of locals playing trivia. The food was great and at a great price. A wonderful place for families and dates.

Surprisingly good food and great service

By DianeAoki |

If you don't know anything about this place, you expect it to be just another bar and restaurant. The menu is pretty extensive and has such un-bar food as salmon avocado wrap and veggie burgers. My friend said her salmon wrap was very good. I had ribs, which were tender and tasty. The steak fries were the best. I asked for a dark beer recommendation and the waitress described one that I wanted - a local beer with a chocolate-coffee flavor. We first sat in the bar, and then asked to move when the smoke got to be annoying. The non-smoking rooms made going there so much more enjoyable. The bartender was very helpful giving directions.

Pretty good tavern food

By AtlantaGirl_79 |

We had burgers, grilled chicken, salmon. All were good. Nothing to write home about. Friendly service. The place is very old and unique. It has lots of character. A great place for a large party out to have fun.

Great Food and Service

By christyoverall3 |

My husband and I came here for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. The food was great (crab cake sandwich and pulled pork platter + blueberry pie, all for under $50 with tip). The service was sincere and friendly. We'll be back!

Perfect place after visiting the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library

By sfRebecca |

We walked here after visiting the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, but there is plenty of free parking so could have driven. The walls of this "historic" establishment (1956) are covered in local lore and artifacts (nothing is labeled but we took some time to look around). Evidently it's known as a "liberal" hangout and President Obama ate here on his tour of the South. Service was friendly and prompt. Prices are moderate and servings are generous. I did feel the floor was a bit sticky and avoided the restrooms. The food could be described as substantial diner fare. Their breakfasts include perfectly prepared eggs and crispy bacon or ham. Burgers are really good. BBQ pork was delicious. Good beer on tap.

Oldest Continuously Operating Tavern In Atlanta

By Marilyn M |

I am not as old as Atkins Park Tavern but almost. I have been coming to Atkins Park for about 72 years - so you know it must be good. It has a bar section with TV and a family restaurant section. The staff is super friendly and the food is excellent. The menu changes with the seasons and each day there is a special. I love the regular items and look forward to the specials. There is even a cozy play haven for the children - with toys. This is a wonderful place to dine and a good home away from home.

Good Place to Meet and Eat

By Tripre |

Fortunately for my husband and myself, a meeting we recently attended was being held at this bar and grill. Despite what appeared to be a small staff, the Manuel’s Tavern team warmly and efficiently handled a huge standing-room only crowd. Both my husband and I ordered drinks from the bar and burgers and fries from the menu. The drinks were strong, but affordable, and the burgers were tasty. I would definitely return to Manuel’s Tavern. The ample free parking is another plus.

Completely Remodeled and in fine form

By Bbqman3341 |

tasty food, great wings, exceptional chili dogs, vast beer selection, reasonable prices, fantastic personal service are this place a legend. the recent remodel job has changed this old watering hole into a bright clean new restaurant with an extensive menu serving everything form steaks to catfish plates, top of the line burgers to well crafted rueben sandwiches and heaping plates of nachos.. something for every one while maintaining the feel of an old political hang out bar. if these walls could talk! good food, excellent bar is separate form dining area, and private rooms are available. good times!

Atmosphere good, food mediocre

By John D |

Staying nearby and having read good reviews decided to give them a try. It was a Friday and the place was heaving but we were found a table and given attentive service . The beer was good but the ‘Special’ we chose of fish and chips was not the best. The fish was thin strips of mainly batter. Perhaps we made a bad choice

Great Half Nacho w/Chili and Draft

By Lee M |

I had not been here for years and really had forgotten about it in a fog of partying after one long birthday long ago. My friend took me here and the place was a very comfortable, interesting, warm place with all the photos on the wall, and the food was just an appetizer but turned out to be a great tasting meal for me. The draft IPA beer was both sort of sweet and full of hops like I like it. When you leave Manuel's Tavern fat and happy you are close to a lot to get into trouble or have fun or get lost in the moment. Eat here and enjoy before you get in trouble. It will get you home before the sun rises.

Bar hopping!

By Pinecrickchick |

Stopped in here on saint Patrick's day. This was bar four and this is where I think it hit me. I loved this place. The atmosphere was great and there was a nice crowd of people. All of the food I saw coming out looked delicious. I'm pretty sure I got some chicken fingers here and they hit the spot. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Great place for lunch or mid afternoon break

By JimH |

I stopped in with my wife and grandchildren for an early afternoon snack/meal We enjoyed a couple of appetizers (wings, peppers, if I recall correctly) and drinks. Soft drinks for the kids maybe an adult drink for the adults. We don't live in Atlanta but usually stop at Manuel's to enjoy the atmosphere when we are through. It is a great neighborhood bar.

Pinball

By Douglas |

I love this place. Two pinball machines :) The Batman one needs the left flipper adjusted. Atmosphere is great. Great place to have some fun.

Lunch after the autoshow

By backhoe409 |

A couple of buddy's I myself wanted a good lunch after going to the Atlanta Auto show. We did ed on Manuels Tavern. I have lived in the Atlanta area for about 35 years and have never been to this landmark tavern. This place opened around 1956 and was totally remodeled about 6 months ago. Great bar and atmosphere, I was told that the wall hangings are the same they just rebuilt the restrooms, kitchen and one of the dinning rooms. Our table had 2 bbq sandwiches with steak fries and 1 gyro with steak fries. The plates were cleaned off with no problem. Drinks? We had an Irish Whiskey neat, one with diet coke and a Manhattan. Perfect in every way. The menu is large, the place was busy and everyone seemed to be having a good time. If you want a great drink and meal in a place that has history this is the place to go. I hear that their weekend brunch is very good.

Great time

By H W |

We were visiting the area and was recommended Manuel's tavern by the hotel. Glad we followed it up, was a great experience. We enjoyed the food, it was good and plentiful but it was the atmosphere of the bar area that made the whole experience. Loads of memorabilia around the walls to look at. The staff were attentive enough without being intrusive and provided a great selection of local beers. Would recommend to anyone visiting Atlanta from back home.

An ATL classic

By Debra K |

You have to go to Manuel's Tavern if you're in ATL, it's the law. You will quickly see what kind of bar this is when you walk in and spot the portraits of FDR and JFK looming over you. That's right, it's a Democrat bar. I suppose Republicans must go there occasionally, but they can't really feel that welcomed.

Glad we Went

By sskroll |

We were told about this place by a local and it was a great place to gather for a meal. Staff was very friendly, prices were great and there were so many choices to pick from that we will have to go back. Some neat takes on southern cuisine and very tasty. Atmosphere is quite unique and tells some of the history of Atlanta by what's on the walls. Parking is available.

Pretty Good Pub Food!!!!

By Ken S |

Six of us met there for dinner on a rainy, Tuesday night. Not very crowded. Four in the group had been there several times before; it was my wife and I’s first visit in many, many years. Food and service were above average to excellent. Dishes ordered included rib dinner, chicken melt sandwiches, chicken tenders, hamburger and a salad with grilled salmon. Everyone seemed quite pleased with their dishes. Service was above average…actually, our server was quite good. The only glitch was as the dining room emptied (now, we are talking 8:15 p.m.), the servers sat at a table next to where we were eating to roll silverware in napkins….do you think they were ready for us to leave? 😂🤣😂 Manuel’s is an instutution in Atlanta and definitely worth a visit.

First time here...I'll be back!

By Patrick "Troll" DiVenti |

We arrived here for a family gathering to celebrate the life of a recently passed family member. The staff was very respectful as were the occupants of the establishment. The food was tasty and fitting for our gathering. Beverages were ice cold and never empty. I'll definitely be coming back and recommend this establishment to anyone who is looking to relax for a while.

Pleasantly surprised with the lunch selection

By Docdic18 |

Visited Manuel's for a great weekdays lunch with 3 children. Food and service were both very good, especially the dogzilla. There is no children's menu, but the bar fare is reasonably priced. The beer selection was good as well.

Still the same as it was in the 70s (and that's good)

By lawyerdaggett |

Great neighborhood tavern. I used to drop in in the 70s on a fairly regular basis when I worked nearby. It hasn't changed much at all. This place is not fashionable but definitely has a lot of character (and and has a political bent, since Manuel was a local politician of some renowned many years ago). The food was great in the 70s and still is. I had a greek salad with a sizable piece of salmon. My husband had 10 wings and fries and couldn't finish them all. He also had 2 beers and said they were the coldest beers he has had in a restaurant in a long while. Both of us really enjoyed the food. Our tab was roughly $34 (exclusive of tip) which we found reasonable. We will be back.

A Local Gem

By kstorbeck922 |

Many people are familiar with this restaurant. It's a local icon. But you should also check out the weekend breakfast menu. It's a good value and it's good food. BTW they make everything from scratch here. They make all the sauces, everything. Fresh!!

Great tradition

By Sggypsy |

Good food, great service and love the tradition. Took German guests and they loved it. Menu diverse enough for everyone from Southern classics to salads. Best steak fries in town.

Food was very good, service was not very good

By identicaltwin |

We arrived and got a table at 4:30 on a Saturday. UGA and Auburn game on. We sat at our table for 15 minutes before a drink order was taken. We had flagged down a couple of people and were told it was shift change. Once our dinner order was taken the food came fairly quickly. Nachos with BBQ Pork, Gyro and Wings were all very good and reasonable. Tall Sea Breeze cocktail for $5. Would definitely go back.

nice and solid place

By madforkay |

we had a steak and brunswick stew. both were tasty. the salad was a tomato and bread. unusual and very good. also they have lots of free parking in an area with little on street parking.

great old atlanta watering hole

By Bbqman3341 |

decent food, more of a watering hole bar, but they have good burgers and sandwiches. walls are decorated with the history of the place and atlanta. fun place, that has held many a lively political discussion.

QUIET, QUAINT, QUICK, AND ... OH, YES, GOOD FOOD!

By DSStephens |

Would not know it was here had my son not found it when he moved to Kirkwood (Atlanta) a year ago. Not long after arriving for a visit he had me in the car and headed for Manuel. Not a lot to look at on the outside, although the name on the side of the building is quite attention catching. But, on the inside history seems to come alive as you see the pictures of the past and sit in a booth that obviously had hosted 10,000 people before you. I ordered a Ruben and fries, and was glad I did. Great place, worth a return visit.

Great Food!

By Geocacher48 |

This place is a landmark pub. Our organization holds monthly meetings here. The service and food is great! I've never had any bad or disappointing dishes. I highly recommend eating here.

Excellent Service and Good Food

By Illinois_John |

Went here for a birthday celebration in a private room, but ate dinner beforehand in a booth in the bar area. Our service was excellent for dinner. My wife and I shared the Southwestern Chicken Grill sandwich (without cheese) since we knew there would be more food at the party. The sandwich was excellent. It was very tasty with ample avocado. We got cole slaw as a side which I thought was just OK, but my wife enjoyed it. I did try the steak fries that my brother-in-law did not eat and they were excellent. They were not cut too thick, as often happens with steak fries. They were also well cooked and seasoned. The party, for about 40 people occurred in a curtained off section of the large room. Our server did an excellent job of taking orders and keeping things going for all of the guests. We ordered pitchers of beer and appetizers. The guests also ordered individual drinks and food to eat, This all went very smoothly. The BBQ wings were pretty good. I thought the chicken quesadillas were a little dry. I would definitely return here again.

Nice place!

By Paul T |

Friends hosted a small casual wedding reception at Manuel's and I was fortunate to have been invited. It's an older place in midtown, but there's plenty of parking and a lot of charm, with posters, pictures, TVs all over the place. Food is pub grub, and good. They handled our group of 20ish well. Some decent local drafts on tap. Give it a shot!

Great food, fun atmosphere and excellent service

By Stephen G |

While looking for a place to park in the Little Five Points area of Atlanta, which proved to be impossible, we went on down North Highland Avenue and ran across a jewel that Atlanteans covet, but being gone for so long, we had never heard of it. I’m mighty glad we stopped. The place is named Manuel’s Tavern Bar & Grill, a quaint little place (that seemingly goes on forever) just a bit east of North Avenue. I had to look at the menu a couple of dozen times before I could make a choice and then changed my mind several times anyway. I chose a “Loaded Dogzilla” which is a huge ½ pound hot dog, covered with most every topping you could think of plus a large helping of French Fries. OMG!!! This had to be the best hot dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. My wife had a perfectly prepared Reuben which was also quite filling and tasty. We learned from our server that Manuel’s was quite historic, too! It seems that quite a few politicians as well as other notables have frequented the establishment over the years, and she talked about a lot of the “eclectic” items hanging on the wall and from the ceiling. I cannot wait to get back to Atlanta and make a return visit to this remarkable restaurant.

Tour Of A Restaurant Icon!

By katork |

Parking can be a challenge in the evening or on weekends, but we went for a weekday lunch. Service was great and the food was very good. Not a favorite of the steak fries, but the onion rings, burger & hot dog were very good. The Poblano Corn Chowder was the bomb! Love the space- they didn't change much from the original restaurant. Bathrooms are much cleaner...Don't forget it is a bar....we enjoyed it! Good for large groups...were told that brunch is very good and crowded.

Lunch after Ga Tech game

We had a terrific lunch today. The service was friendly, the food prompt and delicious. Super crispy onion rings. My only complaint was lukewarm coffee. We like coming back because it feels like a welcoming place to spend time.

fun to go to and they have great food

If you like home area bars with great food go to Manuel's. Went there for a family gathering in the Eagles Nest and they were very accommodating. Went there two nights later just 7 of us and enjoyed every bite.

DIVAS ON DECK Meeting & Birthday Lunch

By Diva Meeka |

This is a nice quiet place. It was nothing major but not as bad either. Just average. I loved the steak fries, they were my favorite. the ladies ordered crab cake, cheeseburger, and omlette. They all said the food was aveerage as well. The location is great and has plenty of parking but again nothing to write home about. I'm willing to try out any place at least once though, so please try it out for yourself!

The place for journalists and politicians!

By kurokitty |

When you step into Manuel's Tavern, you step into an iconic piece of Atlanta history. It is a regular watering hole for journalists and politicians. Earlier this week we took over one of the back rooms to say goodbye to an Associated Press editor leaving his position. On Election Day you often can see TV crews outside as part of their live coverage and it's a place where both politicians and journos converge after the state legislature's session ends. Former President Jimmy Carter even endorsed this place on a Delta Air Lines travel video of Atlanta. I love the fact that the food here is reasonably priced -- the 1/3-pound Manuel's Burger is only $6.95. I love the French Dip here, the Veggie Melt is great with a substitution of feta cheese and Manny's ribs are among the best in the city but I think relatively little-known since this place does not hail as a BBQ joint. For brunch, I usually get the Manuel's Favorite breakfast and it's a real challenge for my friends to be able to finish the stack of blueberry pancakes you can order. With all of its history, the tavern likes to keep with the times. There are four charging stations for electric vehicles out back.

Manuel's is back and better than before

By Teresa S |

The menu remains very much like the old one and the building still has the feel of the Manuel's everyone remembers. The good news is that the restrooms have had a major face lift and the dust, cigarette smell and baked-in grease in the bones of the building have disappeared. We had a quick glance into the new kitchen and it looked top notch. The original tables, sturdy, heavy duty ones remain as do the booths in the bar. The food: I had the crab cake and steak fries. It was very good. A large portion pattie with small amounts of shrimp mixed in with the crab. The toasted bun and the jalapeno tarter sauce make the sandwich a real hit. The fried chicken salad arrived with a generous portion of perfectly crispy chicken. Service was prompt and friendly. Welcome back, Manuel's!

Great food and atmosphere

Attended an event in this great historic tavern. Tomato Caprese was an amazing appetizer. J.J. Special Burger one of the best burgers ever!

Great food and event. Service needs some help.

By CHBBGeorgia |

I visited this location for a Liberty on the Rocks event. The event was great, food was delicious but unfortunately they only had one waiter running around trying to help a lot of people. He did the best he could and had a great attitude about it. Management needs to recognize that when a large group is meeting and a fairly busy week night might require a few more hands.

Nostalgic tavern with great food

By Robert N |

Nostalgic tavern with great food. Manuel’s Tavern corner location has a parking lot across the street. Walk into the tavern and take a stroll along the walls to see history. The food is delicious. Service was prompt and courteous. Beer on tap selection covers any taste bud. I had the Manuel burger which is 1/3 pound of angus beef served with large French fries.

A local institution!

By Kirk C |

The food is good. The beer is good. The atmosphere is a classic. The local history is on every wall. You may run into local actors or politicians having a pint. Also, their pancakes are great!!!

crowded but good service; fun place

By Bs R |

Stopped by for dessert last evening after a show. The place was crowded, but once one finds a parking place (in lot or on nearby streets) one can pretty much find a place to sit if you walk through and find an empty table. Service was congenial and timely. Food was good with more than the usual "bar food" offerings.

THE OFFICIAL Atlanta In-town Bar....

By HGLAW |

I've been going to Manuel's since I attended law school at Emory in the mid-seventies. It's the unofficial gathering place of many different groups of Atlantans, including Democrats and the Atlanta press. The service is very good, and the food much better than average bar food. I have to admit that I've never tried anything much fancier than the burgers and fries, the Reuben and the wings, but that's more out of habit than anything else. Lots of beer choices on tap and in bottles. If you want to check out what happens in-town, check out Manuel's. The regulars sitting at the Bar will be glad to tell you. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Movers and Shakers

By trimic |

While visiting in Atlanta some friends suggested that we stop by Manuel's Taven for lunch. In its day this was where the movers and shakers in the political arena would come to transact business. (I doubt if the Sunshine laws were around then). We enjoyed looking at the decor and readin all the signs. I had the French Dip and it was excellent along with the fries. Looking forward to going back

Pub n Grub with a local flair

By rlh |

First off, a shout out to Ms. Melanie who was such a friendly & cordial server. Many thanks. Manuel’s Tavern is great. An examination of the walls in each of the three sections of this restaurant will readily reveal its significance to the local scene. Lots of vintage items and photos. The neighborhood is outstanding too and very neat The Carter Library. The menu offers many selections from sandwiches, salads, some veggie options and a plethora of draft beers. The food we ordered was very good. I enjoyed the Overnight Oats with fruit, a special of the day. The appetizer of fried cheese was better than most when eaten with the accompanying warm salsa. My son had a sandwich and crunchy tater tots that looked great. For its history and its location, Manuel’s is a go-to place.

Birthday Bash!

By Eleanor H |

We reserved the large dining room for a double birthday celebration. Manuel’s was an old stomping ground for the birthday boys. It was fabulous! Great atmosphere and food. There’s an extensive party menu to choose from. Out two fantastic servers lead by Michael accommodated us in every way, and kept a bar tab running for the guests. We were able to display a slide show on the multiple screens, and our music played over the sound system. Splendid!

An Atlanta and a family tradition

By Nancyjanem |

Manuel's (or Manny's) is our go to for any occasion that takes us to the Ponce area. We even hosted our 30th anniversary celebration here. Our stand by items are the McCloskey burger, Dogzilla, and the nachos. Brunch is always delicious! If you are a visitor to Atlanta allow some extra time to look at the photos and memorabilia throughout. This is the real history of Atlanta.

Lunch with Friends

Walking memory lane in Atlanta

By Papo |

I believe it has been 40+ years since I set foot at Manuel’s Tavern, a place I frequented a lot back in my college days. So many memories. The place looked about the same for the most part, but everything much more polished than the old tavern of my college days. We had lunch and the food was really delicious. I had the Rueben and my wife the French Dip. I highly recommend them. This is definitely a vintage destination and I’m glad it is still around. If it continues to have delicious food, friendly staff, and the amazing atmosphere, it will be around in 200 years.

Classic pub

A must-visit. Classic pub with lots of local history. We sat in a booth in the bar. Good beer selection, diverse menu, good pub food.

Favorite intown spot to eat and have a cold beer

By Sean S |

One of the last true neighborhood bars left in Atlanta. Great place to have a cold beer and just hang out. The sis excellent and the food is awesome. My wife and I love this place.

It's Still Manuel's

By ISC624 |

Our first visit since the renovation. We were pleased to see Manuel's still looked pretty much the way it did when we first went there decades ago. Although I'm sure a lot went into the building's infrastructure, the end result is it looked like they just spruced up the place; which was fine by us. The food and service were still very good, and it was like going back to visit an old friend.

Saturday Lunch?

By Jim G |

Going to Georgia Tech in the 70s, this was a great pub. We knew it had been expanded and upgraded, but hadn’t been by in a couple of years. Turns out on Saturday they don’t serve lunch until 2 PM, so at 1:30 we ordered from the brunch menu. Food was good, service was excellent. Julia did a superb job taking care of our group. The Maloof family has done a great job with the place, Manual would be proud.

Old and classic

By Flyrod929 |

This is an old Atlanta place. Famous watering hole for democratic politicians and political junkies. Bar food is decent but not exceptional. Having been here many times over the years, I'm glad they are closing for major renovations. If you have not eaten here, strongly recommend you come before year end to see what the place is like. Though it is past its peak, it's a classic that you should experience in its mostly original form. I look forward to the new place even though I may miss this.

Brunswick Stew!

By Kevin B |

Nice neighborhood bar that looks like an English tavern. Service was a tad slow as the bartenders pour and serve the tables behind the bar seating as well. First time having Brunswick stew and it was incredible. Super reach tomato and pork broth with plenty of meat, onions and corn. Even the large cubes of chicken were super tender. Definitely seems like a good spot for football. I could have eaten so many bowls of the stew. Tons of history with the city too apparently.

Good Sunday brunch; great service!

By shley17 |

We love Manuel's, and we always go for dinner. This time around we decided to try the brunch, and boy am I glad we did. The French toast was great! The kitchen fried my eggs instead of scrambling them, and the waiter picked up our bar tab to make up for it. It's not every day that you happen upon servers who make things right without being asked. My husband decided to go with a burger, and he was pleased as usual. We will be back to Manuel's for sure! It's an Atlanta institution, and worth the trip every time!

Sunday Brunch with our son and young granddaughters

By Robert V |

This was a delayed Father's Day for my son and I. We have been to Manny's many times, but this was our first visit since the pandemic shutdown. We all had breakfast type food- pancakes, french toast and a tofu breakfast hash. We all enjoyed our meals and the service was great. Our granddaughters are 3 and 7. Manny's is the kind of place you can be yourself, whoever you are. The 3 year old wandered around and had a great time. Manny's amost went under during the pandemic and was the beneficiary of a GoFundMe campaign organized by some longtime patrons that substantially exceeded the goal. Now that regular operations have resumed, I hope that their patrons will continue to support Manny's with their business. We arrived around 10:00 a.m. and there were not more that a dozen diners. There were a few more when we left around 11:15, They said that their evening business was better but they need our support to be able to prosper longterm and continue to be an Atlanta institution.

Manuel labor for good food

By gregorio1955 |

We walked to this long time establishment, and was glad to see it wasn't Mexican food. Casual restaurant food, decor is expected. Beers were good and cold; each trying something different. Food was good and enjoyed by all. Waitstaff was attentive.

Re-visit of an old favorite

By Harry A |

They took pictures before the remodel so "everything is back in the same location". Evened out the dips in the floor, but didn't destroy the flavor of the place. Has the best blackened tuna sandwich, $12.00, in town, for both size and flavor. Burger's are still the same. It's nice to see some things stay the same and not become a "bistro", "euro-cafe", "brew-whatever". Still the same solid establishment, if you haven't been, it is a must visit for lunch or that late night hunger when you are at North and Higland.

Same good food for over 25 years

By KenGuthrie |

This restaurant and bar has been around several decades and one thing that can be said is that it is consistent. The food is good, well priced, nothing "fancy". The building is old, the decor is old, and there is an "old" established list of regular customers mixed in with the young college group who often come after a local sporting event. It's a favorite place to meet friends, have a reasonable meal (including a hot dog if that's what you want) all the way up to a full plate of meat and veggies. There are couple of rooms where you can be seated, but we prefer tables close to the front windows so we can do some people-watching. The facility is also good for a meeting. For a number of years, I used to go to a monthly luncheon for people who liked to fish and the attendees ranged from guys in pickup trucks to local bank officers in their newest BMW's. The only negative is that in some areas the tables are a bit crowded but that's never been an issue for us. Somehow it adds to the quaintness of the old place. Anytime a restaurant can last for decades, in the same place, virtually serving the same types of food, speaks to the value most people place in the establishment.

Great Tavern

By Stephen G |

This is what a neighborhood tavern should be, within a block of The Highland Inn. Burgers are very good and the service is extremely attentive. Open late. Lunch and Dinner also

Great food and wonderful beer selection

By James H |

After visiting Manuels for over 40 years, they still continue to serve quality food at modest prices. I love the atmosphere!

Dinner and Drinks

We stopped in for trivia on Sunday. I had the club sandwich. Very good food. Time times. Ice cold beer. What more could one want?!

After all these years still a great place to meet up with friends.

By Paul S |

When I was in college I used to frequent Manuel's Tavern quite a bit with my friends after work and had not been there in years. Last night was their with a party of eight who arrived at different times. The waiter handled things like a champ and did a great job considering how busy he appeared. The food and drinks were good. If you are looking for a good place to meet up in downtown Atlanta, this is always a good option.

Great Historical Place in Atlanta

By somewhereingeorgia |

Go for the history and to experience an Atlanta landmark. The service is friendly and the food was ok, but not great. Allow time to look at the political photos around the rooms. There is plenty of free parking in lots surrounding Manuel's Tavern.

Local Gem

By ATL_Pool_Girl |

Manuel's Tavern never fails. Friendly staff, great food, and a huge local draft beer selection. Bonus points for being smoke free!
