After a long day at UCSF my husband and I visited Marnee Thai after hearing about it from a friend. The food was fantastic. The location was central. The only down side was a pretty cramped space with uncomfortable seating. We arrived at a few minutes past 5pm (highly recommended if you want to get a table) and ordered straight off the specials menu. I had a banana (plantain) curry with shrimp that knocked my socks off. My husband had some sort of a pork curry that was good too but mine was better. Tip: Parking sucks. Get there early and ask for a table towards the back so you don't have to look at the person waiting to take your seat.

and the food is, too. This is run by a family that values fresh ingredients, and authenticity in their recipes.

Family-friendly, great service, extensive menu. Our friends have lived in the neighborhood for years and it is their default going-out place. Reasonably priced, too; three adults and two very hungry teenagers had dinner for under $100 with tip. The kids knew the wait staff and consulted them on whether or not they were ordering too many courses. The wait staff advised well.

Visiting SF, I've got the impression that most SF restaurants are small and loud, and Marnee Thai is one of them. When we came, the line was out of the door, but lucky for us we had a reservation. The restaurant is long and narrow with tables very close to each other, which gave me the feeling that I am sitting in the long hallway. The food (Pad Thai and vegetarian curry dish that my daughter ordered) was good. Be careful with their spice rack, they are serious about their spices there.

de-licious

Amazing Thai food.

Very good Thai food and the service is familial. Worth the trip out to Sunset.

Ate at the Irving Street location on a Friday night. Parked in a residential area two blocks away to avoid parking hassles. Arrived a little after 6pm and got a table for two with no wait time (note: those who arrived an hour later than us had to wait for a table). For our appetizer, we ordered Summer Rolls, which was quite tasty. For our main entree, we ordered Pad Phed (garlic chicken with vegetables) along with a side of brown rice. Meat and vegetables were tender and not overcooked and sauce was delicious. Would definitely go back again, if in the area.

It's expensive to source authentic ingredients but this place does. The food tasted like I was back in Thailand, on the countryside, near a beach.

both locations are great, family-owned.

one of the best thai restaurants in sf.

When you walk into this place, you'll see about 10 restaurant reviews posted up all over the place dating back from 1990. Marnee is a well known Thai restaurant in San Francisco due to great marketing by the owner. The food is standard Thai fare and nothing out of the ordinary. Everything tastes a bit bland as if it was made hours ago and is waiting in a steam table. The owner is an interesting person. She is quite rude to her workers and she also is a fortune teller for $20 a pop. She is a real businesswoman. There is a Thai restaurant about 1 block away that has much better food but I forgot the name of it, it is much cleaner and newer.

Every time (twice a year or so) we come to the city we need to get our Marnee Thai fix. The food is always fresh and flavorful, and this time was no exemption. The vegetarian Pad Thai was the best I have ever tasted. We also had Praram chicken that also very tasty. Steamed rice and 1 Thai iced tea for $27.00. So for less than $32.00 we had a perfect dinner for two.

Although the restaurant was overwhelmingly busy due to a festival in GG Park, the owner kept her cool and was very accommodating. I agreed to share a table and had a delicious meal with good company.

My sister, her husband and I were visiting my brother who has stage 4 cancer in a San Francisco hospital - we live in New Jersey. After waiting for several hours to see him, we took a dinner break and looked for Thai food on Trip Advisor. Marnee Thai was the closest location that had good reviews. When we arrived on a Sunday evening, the place was packed ! I thought we were going to have at least an hour wait to even get seated. A waitress greeted us and brought us to a room in the back and gave us our menus. Five minutes later she back and took our order which was amazing. We ordered the chicken satay and potstickers for our appetizers. My sister ordered a salad, my brother-in-law had the Thai chicken and I ordered the pad kraprow with shrimp along with a Singha beer. Shortly afterwards our appetizers arrived and they were fantastic ! I have been to Thailand numerous times and have visited Thai restaurants in the USA many times. But these satays ( and the peanut sauce ) were possibly the best I have ever tasted. The potstickers were also incredible. My brother-in-law who is of Italian heritage, also said they were delicious. Not long after, our main courses came out. I had told our waitress I wanted my pad kraprow hot... like a Thai person would want. Well this dish was simply one of the finest I have ever had, especially considering how busy the place was. The blending and balance of the onions, chili, peppers, Thai basil and sauces was perfect along with the shrimp. Sometimes the shrimp are cooked too long or are not ideally fresh which ruins the dish for me. But this was again - perfect. !! My sister enjoyed her salad and her husband cleaned his chicken to the bare bones. We all agreed this was a great dining experience. By the way, we ordered chicken satay and soup to take out for my sister-in-law waiting at the hospital with my brother.

Within walking distance of the Science Museum in Golden Gate Park you'll find the best little Thai restaurant you could hope for. Our server was very helpful in guiding us toward a delicious pumpkin-potato appetizer, followed by three main dishes which the three of us shared. The crispy duck was outstanding, the fish and chicken preparations also excellent. This restaurant is so unpretentious that you might pass it by - don't be fooled. The roti dessert might be described as resembling a donut, but it's so much more exciting than that.

Marnee was recommended by a friend.Upon arrival,we saw that it was Zagat rated and read several local favorable reviews which were posted in the restaurant.Needless to say, we found the reviews highly inaccurate.Restaurant was a crowded, dingy place.Bathrooms and hallway leading to them were disgusting.Still,we sat down with open minds, thinking that the food ,at least ,must be amazing.NOT SO! Restaurant was moderately crowded,we felt fortunate that it was not the height of the dinner hour, still, service was quite slow and awful. One of us ordered soup which never arrived. When this was mentioned to our waitress, she claimed not to know that soup had been ordered. We put in the order again, and the soup arrived AFTER we got the check! We promptly returned the soup, for the obvious reason, and asked that it be removed from our bill.It was. The food was the worst Thai we've ever had! Basic fare like chicken coconut soup was so sour with lime juice, it masked any other flavors. The pad thai was made with ketchup, tons of it, to the point that it was reddish and sticky, and sickeningly sweet.Tofu was dry and spongy. Our friends were disappointed in their dinners as well, and we left the food and headed for a tried and true restaurant we knew to have dinnerthat we could actually eat.We just can't believe that people actually like this place! We read favorable reviews on many sites and were surprised, to say the least, that it was favored by anyone! We're from N.Y.C. We are used to the real deal! Stay away from Marnee!

Saturday evening, so always crowded, but only waited 15 minutes. The proprietor is always a hoot ... she runs that place tip-top! Always funny to hear her bark orders across the restaurant to the kitchen staff! Usually a full house, kinda crowded, but the noise is part of the experience! The Angel Chicken Wings are soooo good, and my favorite #47 Noodles with Crab and Egg was just as good this week as the first time I tasted it several years ago! Reservations are best, but still a wait. But worth it!!!

My sister & I stopped by here while in San Francisco. We got the Angel Wings & the pad se ew. The angel wings came out first and they had a great flavor to them. Just the right amount of spice. The pad see ew lived up to expectations. It's balance was just right and was pretty filling. I also liked the metal rice bowl that they use. The service was good here too. I was completely dehydrated and they always kept my water full. If I'm in the area I'll be more than happy to come by again.

This was only the second time that I've ever eaten Thai food...but it was fantastic! I would definitely order from there again! I ordered take-out, so I can't really speak to the customer service and restaurant atmosphere.

This place came recommended by someone who loves authentic Thai food and Marnee Thai fit the bill. The food was delicious! Tables are close together. Service initially was a little slow in taking our order, but once we did order, the food came out quickly and the server checked on us regularly. The decor was pleasant and clean. The place was busy and bustling---good city atmosphere. Definitely a repeat!

A short walk from my son & daughter-in-law's apt sits a neighborhood gem called MarneeThai. The restaurant seating sits back a bit from the portal but don't be deceived. The food is recognized by patrons and critics as one of the best around. They serve all sorts of traditional Thai dishes and specials I have neither seen nor heard of before. Taste is wonderful. I like spicy food and my server estimated "mild". I was a little disappointed by his choice, which was spot on. I felt the heat rise through my scalp. Fresh ship and veggies in a wonderful sauce. Sea bass and a curry dish were great. An avocado salad with nuts was heavenly. Don't miss this foodie heaven if you are near the Golden Gate Park a bit away from UCSF Med Ctr just off Lincoln at (9th).

Our appetizer was roti paratha with peanut-curry sauce ($9) – this was very tasty but considering it was a few pieces of fried bread and a small bowl of sauce, $9 was a bit excessive. The cocktail – pomegranate martini ($7) was the reverse situation: surprisingly cheap but not terribly strong or interesting. It was fine though. The main course, a pumpkin curry with tofu ($12) was good – flavorful even though it was mild (on request). Overall: a decent meal, nice ambiance, good service. I’m also giving Marnee Thai 3/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • A decent number of dishes are vegetarian or can be made vegetarian. A few are vegan. • Family-owned business. • The website has plenty of information about the chef and his background, their awards, and even videos from TV shows like Check Please, but virtually nothing about the ingredients. • To elaborate on that, the website has about 600 words decided to chef Chai Siriyarn, a whole webpage dedicated to reviews and press coverage, but only 3 words dedicated to ingredients: “…freshest seasonal ingredients…” Nothing on the menu either that I could see. • So, with all of that, I’m giving a neutral 3/5 green stars.

I would classify this place as kind of a "hole in the wall" type of restaurant. Going by just three factors, i.e. the food taste, presentation, and the service, I rated this restaurant as average. The taste of the food, like the traditional Pad Thai Tom Yum soup, Pineapple Thai rice, chicken with cashew nuts, etc., is pretty much just what I expected...nothing much and nothing less. The presentation is straightforward and the service is really nothing to write home about. You can't go wrong with this place if you're just looking to satisfy you cravings for Thai food.

Marnee Thai must have the best Pad Thai noodles, they are just so good! Their standard Pad Thai come with Shrimp which is uncommon for us Texans, you've usually got to pay $3 extra. Not here, being close to the bay comes with some perks. The portion was huge and definitely not in the price range listed on TripAdvisor, more like $12 for the Pad Thai. The summer rolls were a good app but I would have like to see more meat in them. Marnee's is legit, give it a try if your looking for Thai around the Sunset area. Enjoy!

We love this place. Highly recommend the curries, but in fact, everything we have tried has been at least very good and most excellent. Place always has lots of customers, a sign of just how good it is. And afterwards, if you are not too stuffed, you can walk up and down Irving Street for a few blocks and get some good, and cheap, Sesame Seed Balls or rice cake for desert from the numerous Asian hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are very good. Also, lots of grocery stores with all sorts of Asian foods. We always try to take visitors and friends there - we drive down from Santa Rosa, it is so good.

We had their Take-Out and everything we ate was great, we had Samosa's, rice with pineapples, Pad Thai noodles, vegetables with rice and spring rolls. Everything tasted fresh and very good.

Went to Marnee's last week. Food still good but seems like it's not as good as last years. Typical San Francisco Asian restaurant with hustle and close tables and loud order calls but this adds to ambiance. We had the pad thai pork which is a staple here and fresh egg rolls. both good. Since this restaurant is in Sunset district, there is a better chance of getting good parking place nearby without paying. We like Marnee Thai and always feel like family when we are there.

Love love love. THis was one of my favorites in 2011. Went again on a vacation and was not disappointed.

This place gets a perfect score & was truly great in all categories. This was probably one of the best Thai dinners we've had, and we usually love the Thai food in our hometown of Fremont, CA. We'd come back here when we visit this part of SF or our good friends there. First of all, the service was great, fast, & frequent. We did not have to wait to be seated (called in advance to make sure there was seating available) or for any request. The decor is great the inside is like a thatched hut. The food was outstanding This restaurant had unique items such as the coconut hotcakes which are small bite sized items that are incredibly delicious & slightly sweet. The acovado salad was also a unique item not usually found at Thai restaurants. We also had the panang protein, the pad se-ew, and the spicy ma kuer, along with steamed rice and Thai iced tea. All vegetarian of course.

Ach, I hate that crappy service can affect the taste of food! Their food is amazing. Amazing. The service was heinous. If the service was near the quality of the food I'd have blown a gasket.

I went there with my colleagues. We order randomly but everything was good, especially the spicy wings the seafood and the roasted duck salad. The restaurant is unexpectedly big so we did not have to wait to get a table. The waiter lacked some experience but was good. The food was cooked very fast and was taken continuously to our table, and we shared it together. At the end I took a typical Thai ice cream that was delicious.

I had a really yummy yellow curry. I am glad I noticed I had to order a side of rice, as it didn’t come with it. We didn’t have to wait and were immediately seated. Quite a nice meal.

Last week I had dinner at the Marnee Thai restaurant with my wife and two visitors from out of state. I live near the restaurant and eat there from time to time. Some of their items are excellent--particularly the corn cakes and the satay items and the curries. On this most recent visit I felt that the operators could not get the partons through the meal fast enough. Our four appetizers were brought with the dinner plates and almost before we could finish the dish the wait staff was attempting to remove the plates. On at least three occassions we had to stop them as we were not finished. We are not slow eaters. We were out of the facility in forty-five minutes. This place is small and much of the time has patrons waiting in the door area. Although I have recommended this establishment to some of my friends in the past I feel that the main concern of the operators is to maximize revenue with a quick turnover. I will not return soon.

Both locations have very good Thai food. We prefer the one further out on Irving, for both the atmosphere and friendliness. The tables in both places are very close together but the staff is helpful, friendly and quick. And if you are eating in the Irving location when "mama" is there, well, you are in for a treat! Street parking on Irving is almost always available early in the evening. We love the green curry & the pad Thai, but almost anything is a winner. A couple of times they have had a special chicken sate wrap that was heavenly. The prices aren't cheap but not very high either. Lots of San Franciscans eat here, so that tells you something. They have been in business a long time -- we've been going there since 1999 and they were already an "institution."

We decided to stop for lunch after our visit to the Academy of Science and before we took the No. 71 bus back to our hotel. It 's a small place but as others have noted, the staff is friendly and the food good and reasonably priced. I had the duck and my wife the pork fried rice. Both were excellent.

First of all I have to give a 5 star to the atmosphere...the walls and the ceiling was cover in a amazing design. I just got back from Thailand 2 months ago and this made me re-lived that moment. The music was perfect, the musical Thai music match the atmosphere of the restaurant. Better than other Thai restaurant I been to the past with k pop music or hip pop American music. The food wasn't the best I had, but overall the customer service was great. My friend and I walked in 10 minutes before they closed, but the waitress told us to take our time eatting. I'll come back for the services here.

we actually went here twice on our week long trip. solid thai food with reasonable prices. the only issue we had was even for take-out, it took a long time as they are super busy, so either call in your order early or make a reservation.

I've eaten at Marnee Thai many times, and have never been disappointed. Love the spicy angel wings, tom yum, and the seafood dishes!

If you enjoy Thai food, this is a must experience at either location. Their coconut pancakes appetizer or dessert are to die for. Everything else is scrumptious too!

Some of the best Thai food I have had in a long time, the service is off, but I would go back a million times over for the food! If you are looking for perfect service, I do not recommend -- but if you are looking for incredible Thai food look no further. Could not recommend their food more. Pannag Curry was incredible!

Used to be the best now I'm in love with Suriya on Valencia. Although, their tofu angel wings are worth the trip.

We stumbled on this restaurant last year and made sure to visit again this year. This time, we discovered the back room which I'd definitely choose if it's available. The restaurant has great Thai food, is very popular and very reasonably priced. Can't wait til our next trip to S.F.

Good thai in the sunset.

We were visiting San Francisco and happened to be walking back to our accommodation when we saw a large group of people waiting outside this restaurant. I remember reading about it on Tripadvisor and told my husband we had to try the food as it was highly rated. There were so many people waiting for a table, we decided on takeaways. We live in Asia and travel to Thailand regularly (my favourite type of food) but I have to say, this is the best Thai food we have ever experienced. The meals were definitely on the expensive side but oh so worth it. We had Pad Thai and Garlic Prawns and they were devine. My husband's reaction.....wow, wow, wow! He would have eaten there every night of our trip but unfortunately we decided we should experience some more of San Francisco. We will be back.

Been coming to Marnee Thai for about 20 years. The location in Irving st is a bit small and the one on 9th is bigger. Always busy but great food and service. Recommend the hor mok !

I saw the Check Please episode where Marnee Thai was given excellent reviews. My daughter was returning from Thailand after living there for over a year so after picking her up at SFO we stopped here because she was hungry. First impression was the restaurant was a little sticky and musty. The food was good, but according to my daughter not true to what she had been eating. In general it was a little sweeter and less spicy hot.

Very fast service...diverse menu options with tasty Thai flavors and recipes...made for the perfect lunch spot. we arrived early , but the place filled up quickly. especially liked the Thai tea...even thought the service was quick, they never made you feel rushed and gave us plenty of time of conversation.

I saw this place on the show, Check please Bay Area and I am so glad I did. My wife and I love Thai food and we just couldn't find a place close to home that we liked. It is all good food here but I will travel way out of my way to get the Angel Wings. My wife loves the lettuce wraps and the corn cakes. We have tried most everything and I have yet to be disappointed. If you want flaming hot or mild just tell the waiter. They have two locations and we have only been to the 9th street spot. It is not large and the kitchen is right there but the noise level has never been a problem. Service is very good. My mouth is watering thinking about those Angel Wings

I wouldn’t label this restaurant as the best Thai Restaurant in the Bay Area simply bec it’s not! Unfortunately, there are not too many in the Bay Area as it used to be. Food is ok, nothing special especially if you’ve been to Thailand multiple times as I did. If you haven’t had Thai food more than a dozen times, you would think this place is the best. Pad Thai had too much vinegar. Their curry sauce is not thick enough almost diluted. Their fresh spring rolls lacked taste, fortunately the peanut sauce made up for it. The deep fried wild caught sea bass was too oily. The chicken wings was not as good as before. We used to be a regular Marnee Thai customers back in the 90’s. We stopped due to the quality of food that’s gone down. Unfortunately, our recent visit just justified it.

One of my favorite Thai places, Tom Ka Guy is the best!

Tom Yum & Pad Thai were tres yummy.

Decent enough Thai food. Pleasant atmosphere and good service. Parking can be challenging.

We are Thai food fans coming to the Bay Area from a land with little Thai -- and Marnee Thai make us glad to have made the trip. Seated promptly, good service, outstanding food.

Such an incredible find! We stopped after a very long walk and we were starving! The place is tiny and holds 20 people but the food does not disappoint! Cost is very reasonable and worth it. Must stop if near the park

While the food is pretty good/to above average, we enjoy going here for the very entertaining owner and the crowd. Great Thai wings. If it's your birthday or just want to say it is, she will make a fun time of it. While there are better Thai joints in this great city, Marnee Thai is worth the trip.

Always had great service and great food. Maybe a touch pricey for Thai but its worth it so far I have loved everything I have tried from noodle & rice dishes to seafood & dessert.

I had a worst experience of all time in this restaurant. First of all, reservation does not work here. I made a reservation and I still had to wait in line for our table. Second, they just want to make money and rush you. We were asked to place the order while standing waiting for our table, and then they rushed the food to us and give us the check before we even finish our dinner. Bad services, they didn't give us water after we asked 3 times. WORST attitude, because their service was so bad, I decided that forget about the tip. They don't deserve it. The owner even came out of the door and asked for the tip. What the... I will be happy to give the tip if you perform good service. But, ask for tip outside the door. The food is not as good. You can have better Thai food at Ploy II on Haight or Grand Pu-Bah on Division. TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED. NEVER GO BACK.

We always have lunch or dinner here when visiting the Golden Gate Park a block away. The mango fried rice was fluffy & light and the stewed pork belly curry provided the creamy richness. Wash them down with a Singha beer, you are in Thai heaven. Pork belly, don't worry, it's just a tender cut of meat. Not commodity trading. Look for the grassy and tangy green peppercorn on a stem in the curry, a delightful new touch. Top the rice off with fresh Thai chilli in fish sauce, you are guarantee the endorphin rush.

Boo! Not really Thai food. American Thai food. Yuck.

this very busy restaurant is simply superb. i think it is worth travelling to. When we arrived there were no seats except at the bar and they promised to move us once a table was free. They did not forget. The bar would be fine if you are eating alone but it is a tight space. Service is superb and when we asked for advice we were asked all the questions that would help us make good choices. For a place that is in the value range of prices, this is seriously good and on my list of places to recommend for SF. Have the pot stickers as a starter to share..

There are two of these near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and I ate at the one closer to town (9th avenue) as one of a party of 4. I've eaten in a lot of Thai restaurants and this is a good one, good but not great, a solid 4 stars. Some of the dishes we ordered for our table were a cut above, but most were closer to being merely average in both prep and quality (and we shared everything we ordered). Ambiance is also nil. If in the area I would cheerfully eat here again, but it isn't worthy of a special trip.

My husband and i are foodies! After he retired from the Navy,he attended the Culinary Institute of America. He/we know good food. This is it!!! We will be back:):):)

Nice service. Great food.

Quite gross! They still charged other foods and only took this item off from the check. They should have given everything free after this terrible experience.

Went early on a Sunday night and got a table right away. Ordered appetizers and 3 mains. Very tasty! The restaurant started to fill up and had people waiting by the time we finished. Street parking was not difficult.

This is definitely one of the better Thai Restaurants I have been to. Each dish was well prepared, tasted different than the last and was not too spicy for me.

good food, less than avg servings. place is small

Visited last night for dinner with a friend. Thoroughly enjoyed the green papaya salad (watch out for the chilies), green curry w/ beef, steamed white rice and the deep fried spring rolls (delightfully not too greasy and stuffed with delicious fresh shrimp)! Decor is a lil bare bones tiki-shack and the woman who runs the place is a real character.... popping by to check how everything is. Would definitely recommend to others as well as come back!

One of my favorite Thai places in SF. Everything I've had there is good. They always have the sweetest mangos in their mangos & sticky rice dish.

A professor recommended this spot to me and I can't say enough about how much I love the food and the tea at this resto. Highly recommend the coconut hot cakes, the green curry, and the pad thai. I keep coming back on my visits to SF. Love Marnee Thai!

We came here based on the recommendation of a friend who had visited San Francisco a few months ago. It was a smart move. The food was delicious. My sister is an aficionado of Thai food, and she said this was the best Thai she'd ever had. Space is limited and the tables are closely placed, so it can be noisy and a bit cramped and uncomfortable. (Thus the 4 out of 5 rating.)The hostess-owner was awesome and moved our party of 6 to a larger table and helped us with our ordering. The green curry and Thai fried rice with roast duck and pineapple were excellent as were the phad Thai and Tom yum soup. We had an appetizer of spicy angel wings and deep fried tofu. Highly recommended! Rumor has it, it was a Michelin-mentioned in 2011.

Stopped by here for lunch. I ordered pad Thai with chicken and it was really good. I had fried banana and coconut ice cream for dessert and it was out of this world. Great friendly service, atmosphere is just right on. Totally recommending this place to anyone.

Favorite Thai place in the Sunset. I dig the Angel Wings.

We saw it on "Check Please" a SF restaurant show and had to try it. It really was terrific. We made the reservation with Marnee in the afternoon and the table was ready when we arrived. Its a simple, single room with vaulted ceilings and seagrass covering. Cozy with maybe 50 or 60 seats. It is was very busy but the wait staff was very friendly and efficient. We started with the homemade hotcakes which were superb, cooked in an iron skillet they are little treats with corn and coconut milk. We had great spring rolls, angel wings and a refreshing green papaya salad. Main courses were pad thai, panang pork curry and peanut chicken. They were all very good especially the pork curry, tender as can be with a delicate but complex sauce. Everything was fresh, the produce looked straight from the garden. We had a guest concerned about spiceyness and the wait staff guided us well. The real difference was the warm and welcome attitude of Marnee and the staff, it really felt like you were a guest in her home. Guests joyfully came, enjoyed and left happily into a rainy SF night. One fun surprise happened in the middle of our meal, the lights went out, then Marnee and the staff came out banging a tribal gong and burst in a birthday greeting, sounds corny but the whole restaurant joined in the celebration.

I popped over here after visiting the GG Science Museum and had a great lunch. Tables are limited, but worth the wait. Staff is friendly and efficient. Both kids also really liked their meals..

Easy access, quick service, colorful flavorful Thai food. Order mild and you will have enough heat but not too much. Red curry prawns and brown rice.. delicious

I love Marnee Thai. My wife and I go here often. They have two locations near me, both in the Inner Sunset. I have yet to take someone here who has not commented on the delicious food. The ambiance is all right. If you eat at the 9th Avenue location and want a quieter place to sit, ask to be seated in the back.

We stopped in for lunch on a weekday - we're from out of town, and stumbled upon they place. The food was wonderful, the staff friendly, and it was a good value! I would recommend this place anytime!

Stopped by this place after reading some reviews. Had the Pad Thai and it was very good, the best I have had in years. We also had the curry chicken which was very good. Restaurant was very nicely decorated and seating was pleasant. Parking can be a challenge at times.

We ordered carryout after our lyft driver told us good things. Food was good, order correct, the place was packed when we went to pick it up. Kitchen was clean (got to see it after being ushered into the back while they packed our food).

Went back to this restaurant on my return visit to my daughters and had another great dinner. They are the best in service, food and the help is fantastic. I also found out that they do have gift certificates and we purchased one to give to my daughter and her husband so they can go there as our guest. they also serenaded me on my birthday with the entire restaurant singing happy birthday and they rang their ceremonial gong and gave me a birthday dessert. Great 89th birthday evening. Cant wait till this Sept and we go back again for another great evening.

Truly delicious food. If you are looking for a restaurant near Golden Gate Park and the ocean with exceptional Thai cuisine, this is the perfect choice. Tiny, not much bigger than a "hole in the wall." We also loved the down-to-earth neighborhood. We would eat here often if we lived near SF.

Love the Thai pad noodles. Homemade hot cakes and golden triangle are my all time favorites. Have been there many times with my wife and also took all my visiting friends to this place, they also loved the taste.

Authentic Thai Cuisine made from family recipes that the Grandma made. Very fresh produce & delicious food. Quaint & fun to eat there. Happy & helpful staff. Never disappoints!

Without question, the food at Marnee Thai is very good. It is not 100% authentic, but the flavors are great and the staff is very friendly. The only downside is the fairly small size of the portions, for an above medium price point. If you are fine with that, then this is definitely a place I can highly recommend!

Good gourmet authentic Thai..smaller portions and visually appealing. Crowded and order only taken from the owner. Feels like you are dining in a hut. They have dishes not commonly found in Thai restaurants.

One of my fave Thai joints.

Marnee Thai is the real deal for delicious, fresh and extraordinary Thai food. My friend, a local, brought us to this sweet neighborhood eatery calling it one of their favorites. She ordered several appetizers, entrees and rice dishes. Everything was perfect. One of their daily specials was already sold out! We all were satisfied! I loved the spring rolls with peanut sauce, and the other dishes. Be aware our first attempt to eat was on a Friday, during the time they close before the dinner seating and were turned away. It is a fun, cozy atmosphere and worth a repeat visit!

I'd been to a lot of Thai Restaurants, but this is one small restaurant where my family enjoyed the food we ordered. Authentic Thai food and price is reasonable. Clean surrounding and friendly servers.

I have had countless meals at Marnee Thai since its inception. Now that I have recently arrived from Thailand I can say with utmost certainty that the flavors and presentation mimics the food that we ate there. My rating of excellence and my agreeing that this is a place where I have had one of my best meals, is representative of the restaurant's authenticity. The small establishment is charming with Thai style decorations. The service is great and most of the employees have worked there forever. The owner is gracious and filled with personality. The Miang Kum is a wonderful way to start and the list from there is varied and wonderful. Curries, salads, mango with sticky rice and do not over look there specials. Arory

I don't understand all the good reviews here. It makes me question the reliability of the reviews. We ordered the Angel wings, which were okay, but also got a Panang Curry, and it didn't resemble Panang curry at all. I've had Panang curry everywhere including Thailand and it is one of my favorite dishes, but at this place it was just not passable. It was like tomato sauce gravy over pieces of broccoli. The lady who runs the restaurant is awkward and invasive and was pressuring us to take the food we hadn't eaten, but we refused and she kept on insisting. Very uncomfortable. This was after she sat us at a table, but not in the order in which we entered the restaurant. Really weird.

I just visited this hidden gem again during my most recent business trip. It is now become a tradition to head over for some AWESOME Thai selections. Service is always quick (although sometimes without a smile or interaction). My coworkers and I have never had a bad selection. Watch out for their homemade red hot sauce! No clue what's all in it - but it's like, WOW, and I can't stop using it when there! Will certainly return again and again and again. Small, narrow restaurant. One shared bathroom. The location I went to was a quick easy walk from the Botanical Gardens.

This is more of a take away place not a great seating dinning place. The food is slightly over priced compare to the quality and quantity provided. You might find better Thai places in SF The waitress are non attentive to details. They look stressed out. The restaurant is small.

Our friend took us to her favorite neighborhood Thai place and what a find. The 3 of us sampled 5 dishes and all were superb. Very tiny place with tight table set up but the service was superb and we relished every bite.

Waited an hour for a table of two. There was another table of three behind us and waiting for just as long. A party of 7 comes in and the owner gives them a table being set up for our two parties right away. Be prepared for unfair wait times! We also ordered the hok mok (which is a pre-made fish custard that they just heat up). It was half frozen when they brought it out. We could have gotten food poisoning.

Discovered this restaurant about 10 years ago through a friend who lives a few blocks away. Now every time I visit SF means eating at Marnee Thai. I have never been disappointed!

Excellent food and service. Wished they were in NJ. Can only go when in San Francisco visiting my daughter . Looked for gift certificate but they have none.

Fantastic!

The food here is very good and creative. If you like Thai food, this is a must do. It can be packed, so come early. Not sure if they take reservations.

This place just had a great authentic atmosphere and the food was amazing to boot. Good staff and wonderful flavor in all the dishes we had. It was a busy night and we had a larger group (8), but they got us seated quickly and we over and above on the service. Since we had a larger group we got a variety of dishes and everything we had was delicious with a proper amount of spiciness to it. All of us would definitely recommend this place and say it is worth going to the area specifically for it.

Excellent Thai food, in this crowded, cozy restaurant. You might have to wait a little while to be seated at this popular spot, but the food is well worth the wait. The owner and staff are friendly and efficient and work hard to keep their customers happy. Cannot wait to get back on another visit.

We were meeting old friends for dinner, and they chose the restaurant. We had never been here. The place was packed. How they manage to cram so many tables, and so many people into such a small dining area is purely magical. No one is uncomfortable, but the downside is the noise level of everyone talking. Suck it up - the meal is worth a minor and temporary inconvenience. From beginning to end, our meal was incredible. Soup, appetizer, entree - none could have been better. We (4 of us) each chose different menu selections and did a lot of sharing and sampling. The Tom Ka soup was the best I've had in San Francisco. Beef Satay is a tad sparse, but absolutely delicious. All 4 main entrees FAR exceeded our expectations. Courses were a bit slow in arriving, but it was worth every bite. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended, as there was a perpetual line outside to get in. At first glance, it seems the wait-staff is overwhelmed and confused by it all. Until you realize there is TOTAL efficiency in their seemingly hap-hazard choreography. Too bad our visit is over - We would LOVE to do this one again. And again.

Staying just around the corner on 24th, our friends said there were one or two thai places within a few minutes walk. Marnee Thai was the first that we came upon and we just decided on it to save the effort of walking any further as it was close on 9pm. A bad move as it proved. Just two tables occupied but that didn`t put us off. We should have taken this as a sign that we perhaps, might not be making the best choice. Having eaten a good snack late afternoon, we didn`t fancy any great spread of food so we just ordered two dishes, both chicken, one a yellow, northern style curry called Khao Soy and another one called Kang Ree, I think. Immediately after ordering the other two tables finished and left, leaving us alone in the pleasant looking restaurant that could have been anywhere on a little soy in Bangkok. Whilst the food was being prepared, the waitress who had been "hovering" a while, approached and told us that the restaurant would close soon and was there a dessert that we would like to order before the kitchen staff left! There`s nothing like being rushed,is there! It was only about 9.20 and the whole place was closing for the night! The food came to the sounds of clearing up, washing, putting away and setting tables for the next day. Not the best accompaniment to a meal that we have had! The food itself was average at the best. Nothing exciting or particularly tasty. We do eat Thai very often anywhere we go as we love it generally. We struck unlucky, I think. It seemed to be a very rushed experience all around as the staff all appeared to want to get home! Looking at other reviews of the restaurant they can be good. It should not matter what time you dine, the food and service should be the same! When we left, we took a walk further down Irving, passing Chabaa Thai. It was full at just before 10pm If only we had walked a few metres more we might have maybe eaten there and enjoyed our late meal a lot better!

Me and two friends came for a sit down meal, the waitress was very impatient and basically demanded we order just as we sat down. None of us had been to a Thai before so we were panicked by having to chose something so quickly. Anyway the food we did chose was delicious, and not that expensive either. It's was very delicious, so much so we ordered take out from this place about 4 times after, trying different food each time. Every time it was delicious.

Lunch is only OK, but the waitress was so rude, she actually yelled, "can't you wait?" after I waved to order and she passed by me 3 times without taking order... sigh...

varied authentic menu; very flavorful; reasonably priced..good service even enough so as to impress out of town guests!

Curry was great, but I don't recommend the satay. Very small restaurant, so go at an off time if you don't like a crowd.

There is little to no ambiance, but it's really all about the food here, tasty and authentic food, great menu selection, staff is extremely fast and attentive. Spicy angel wings, Tom Yum soup, chicken fried rice, yellow curry chicken were tasty and delicious. Pad kee mao was a little too greasy. Thai ice tea was good not too sweet. Overall delicious thai food.

My wife and I went there for lunch on a weekday, and had a very good time. The food was very good. According to my wife, who has been to Thailand, the taste resembled the authentic cosine.

This place is a bit no frills with fantastic food. It is basically a hallway of tables sitting opposite to the kitchen. Amazing aromas will waft towards you while you choosing your meal. It takes about 20min for them to get your meal to you because they really do make it fresh while you wait. One thing I like about this place is that they will let you make any of their meals (including their amazing thai fried rice) with brown rice. Great for vegetarians too.

Both my husband and I are aficionados of Thai Food and our son and his girlfriend took us to Marnee Thai when we were visiting them in San Francisco. We had reservations and had a bit of a wait, but not a long one. The restaurant is small. The menu here is varied and most interesting. All the dishes are flavored with a great deal of sophistication. I had a daily special of Sea Bass with peppercorn sauce which was excellent! This Thai food was some of the best I have eaten anywhere. Food is modestly priced. Highly recommend.

Probably one of the Oldest Original Thai Restaurant in San Francisco. Decor is very nice . Classy .. Food Is as authentic as it is in Bangkok. This place caters to mostly locals being in local china town in sunset district.. worth to try if your by golden gate area

A one long, narrow room with kitchen up front. Service was courteous and slower paced. Tables were a bit tight, but with fresh table cloth and a vase of real orchid. Food was fresh and flavorful with authentic Thai spices.

My favorite dish in the whole world is one of Marnee Thai's appetizers: it consists of fresh spinach leaves wrapped around dried shrimp, onions, lime wedges, ginger, toasted fresh coconut, and peanuts, served with an yummy herb sauce. I live in Florida now, but I still dream about the Miang Kum appetizer as prepared by Marnee Thai on Irving Street in San Francisco.

Atmosphere: I love the high ceilings and feel of this restaurant. It was like we were transported to Thailand. It was cozy and warm. Food: We ordered the coconut cakes for appetizers. It was so good. More of a dessert, in my opinion, but very tasty. For our entrees, we had the green curry with chicken, mango fried rice with duck, and pad thai with beef. The green curry was good but not exceptional. I've had better elsewhere. The mango fried rice with duck was flavorful but the duck meat was mostly fat/skin. I loved the texture of the noodles for pad thai and how soft the beef was. Service: Our waitress and the speed of the meal was average. I would come back for the food and atmosphere of this restaurant, especially the coconut cakes.

Better setting then food.

you gotta love the food, you gotta love the owner... & you'll fall in love for it...

After walking the Secret Garden & 16th Street steps, decided to have Thai food. It was recommended that we try this place. Had a great lunch and the place was packed. We happened to just walk in and got a seat.

Five for dinner, called for a reservation, was seated almost immediately, and then we met Patty. Wow! I would eat anything she said was good, from one suggestion to another......the palate was just truly ingratiated! Those of us who wanted spicy, received a treat......the members of the group that wanted less were equally as pleased. We eat a lot of Thai, and this was very very good! Wanted to eat more for the taste......but the belt would of had to be stretched, so we will wait for next time. Definitely we will go back!

One of the best Thai restaurants in San Francisco. The food is excellent and the servers are very attentive. You'll need to try the Thai samosas and the Thai fried rice with chicken. Said that, you'll not be wrong ordering anything from the menu as all the plates are tasty and cooked to perfection.

Dishes are served family style, so everyone can sample something different! The Duck with noodles (can't remember the name) was AMAZING, and the beef curry was as well! Their appetizers were just amazing, and their service was great!

Met my daughter here one Saturday night. The place was packed. It's a long narrow restaurant with not a lot of room or tables. Kinda typical of these sunset district restaurants. There were table cloths and cloth napkins. And orchids in vases on all the tables. The food was aMAZing! I had the pad Thai and a Thai iced tea. My daughter had a vegetarian pad Thai. My hubby had fish curry. It was one of the best Thai meals we have had. I know my daughter eats here a lot with friends and says she's never had a bad meal. The service was excellent.

The tom yum was great!

This place was packed and the tables were too close together. Service was attentive and the food was good but not great. We got a table right away but we were jammed up close to the next tables. Very uncomfortable. The hostess was loud yelling back to the kitchen across the tables constantly. It was like a Saturday Night Live skit from the 70's. Amusing for about 5 minutes but it never let up. We could hardly to talk to each other. This is not a place to have a paced and cozy quiet dinner. For all the fuss and people waiting on the sidewalk to get it I would have hoped the food was better. Portions were served up on small plates, rice costs extra and served cold. I wanted to like this place. I love Thai food but they just didn't make a good impression. This place has a good reputation so perhaps we hit an off night.

Read reviews on Zagat and every review said this was a great place to eat. Took food to go (vegie pad thai and tofu basil) and the taste of the food was good. Unfortunately the next morning we were in for a surprise...

After walking on a chilly SF day through Golden Gate Park, my wife and I needed carbs and protein: We were rewarded with both plus professional and fast service. Food was well prepared and freshly made - the rice noodles weren't gummy (y'all know what I'm talking about!), and the fresh veggies were crisp. We'll Be Back!

After I went home, I found that I have been charged extra for the tip. The waiter charged exactly 20% for tip although I gave 12%. The cashier changed the tip amount and charged on his own will. What a bad experience! I never had such an experience in any restaurant. Tip is given for great service and 20% tip should be given on my will. I will never go to this restaurant.

We have had the pleasure of eating here over the past 8 years when ever we come to the city. Every time we have had a pleasant meal, relatively quick friendly service, and it's close to golden gate park. We always have a yummy meal and never been disappointed. It's a small place and seating is often crowded, but thats part of the fun of it.

How in the world do you make Thai food without any flavor???? We ordered three different entrees, none of which had any flavor at all...unless you count liberal amounts of salt. I've heard that the restaurant has gone down hill, but this is terrible. The fare at the Thai restaurant in the food court is better. Of the hundreds of Thai restaurants that I have eaten at, this is undoubtedly one of the worst.

Very good Thai food . Sake is perfect and appetisers also nice. Friendly staff from Thailand. Amazing place if you want to feel Thailand

We just had a great experience. Really good food, good selection, very responsive staff. A fair value too.

We enjoyed a very good dinner with pumpkin curry and Tom Ya soup. Spring rolls looked very good although we weren't that hungry. Service was excellent. Would eat there again. It's a small popular restaurant, which is a good sign. I have had better Thai, which is why I didn't give all stars, but you won't be disappointed.

A very good example of a very bad restaurant! I have never left a negative review in my life. This place was the worst restaurant visit ever... The service was awful, the smell was bad! They probably received too many accomplishments once, so now they can treat you as piece of garbage!

I have lived in San Francisco for 12 years and have visited many thai restaurants. Of all those I've visited, this is definitely the best. The food is very consistent and I am not afraid to try new items on the menu because everything is good and reliable. My favorites include Mango Salad with Shrimps and the corn fritters. My boyfriend loves the Angel Wings and thinks the Pad Thai is the best in the world (apparently the chef also won the national Pad Thai competition in Thailand). After straying to try Suriya Thai in the Mission District and having a terrible experience (below average thai food about 30% more expensive that other thai restaurants), I now know how special Marnee Thai is. Anyways, I have nothing but great things to say about this restaurant and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in search of amazing food.

My husband and I are staying just a few blocks away from the Irving street food strip, and we spotted this Thai restaurant on our first day here. We stopped in for dinner and thought it was great. The decor is cute; looks like the inside of a bungalow with fresh flowers everywhere. The food was also very good. I had coconut rice noodles with chicken and prawns; he had chicken pad Thai. Both were great quality and quite filling. We will probably be back again before we leave the city!

It was a popular dining spot on a Tuesday evening. Even without a reservation, we were seated promptly. As expected, the menu was extensive. Interestingly, silverware--no chopsticks--were on the table, which was fine with us. The shrimp appetizer was delicious as was one of the specials, mango fried rice with large chunks of mango. My companion had pad rice duck, and it was wonderful.

First, the food was great. The Angel Wings are indeed heavenly, but we tried several dishes and none disappointed. The place is small and the wait can look intimidating at first, but the tables turn over quickly because of the efficiency of the staff. What some might interpret as being rushed, we took as quick attentive service. Although our orders were taken quickly and our food arrived with amazing speed, we never felt rushed - in fact the owner stopped by and gave our teenage daughter a quick etiquette lesson (the kid had neglected to put her napkin in her lap) and gave her life advice on the folly of early marriage. Her Mom and I loved every minute of it, but if you're terminally stuffy the "lady of the house" might be a bit much. Go here for great Thai food, don't marry early and don't take seriously restaurant reviews from people with no sense of fun or humor.

May well be the best Thai in the City

A staple of the San Francisco Thai scene. This ain't no king of Thai Noodle. Expect to be very full and happy. Portion size varies so doing plates family style is advised.
Mmmm, mmmm good!
Food is excellent. Service was very good. Cost was reasonable. Reservations are a must. Street parking only so be prepared to search out a space. Had the Pad Thai which was well balanced; the yellow curry which was good; the green papaya salad which had a nice jalapeno flavor with a nice bit of heat to it; and spicy chicken wings (seriously!). Everything was very, very good.
