One set prover every time

By 2cute4men |

The food at this restaurant is very good but I can't say the same for the service. Every time I eat here there is only one server. This makes absolutely no sense. The guy is always very nice but the service is slow. Is it because he is greedy or because you can't find anyone. This would be a five star review if the device was faster. Going out to eat is about the taste of the food as well as service. You have the food down so get some more help.

Local gem!!

Just absolutely love this place! It's a neighborhood gem that shines with warm ambiance, friendly staff, incredible food & great wine/drink selection. Mart's is the real deal for true neighborhood Italian dining!!

DELICIOUS meals with inviting atmosphere

By Jack C |

My wife and I are always looking for good Italian restaurants around the Chicago area to eat at and we definitely found a gem at Mart Anthonys! We seem to be picky about our italian cuisines but this place never disappoints! We've discovered this authentic Italian restaurant over a year ago and find ourselves there at least every other week now. It's the perfect place to bring the family and enjoy a quality meal. Our favorites are the lobster ravioli, stuffed gnocchi and chicken parmigiana. The food quality is excellent and the big portions allow us to take some food for home. If you're in the neighborhood and are craving a homemade Italian meal I highly recommend giving Martys a try!!

Stuffed Artichokes

By Pamela J |

Met family there on a rainy, stormy Wednesday. First thing that caught my eye was the Stuffed Artichoke appetizer. Almost liked what my Grandma made.....excellent. Service was a little slow but efficient. Good food, good prices and sweet neighborhood location. Next time we go, we are going to do lunch. Give it a try.

Great service to match the great food

By DeniKS |

I have been to Mart Anthony's for dinner, lunch, and to get take-out, not once have I been disappointed. This is a favorite date night spot for my husband and I. I used to work around the corner which would make it convenient to head to after work but even after relocating jobs we still find time to head over for a nice dinner. We have always had amazing service, even when using a Groupon, which is hard to find in a lot of restaurants. My husband likes the stuffed artichoke which reminds him of how his grandma used to cook them. I love the Mart Anthony's filet mignon with the light pomodoro sauce, just absolutely delicious and I have never tasted something like this anywhere else. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the mood for good Italian food with impeccable service.

Good Italian

A cute neighborhood restaurant. I had salmon and hubby had brascoile. Very good! A little out of the way but worth it. I would go again.

Authentic and Delicious Italian Food in a Great Neighborhood

By Travelwithmom86 |

Don't be fooled by the outside of this restaurant that has been around for 29 years. It has the feel of a true neighborhood spot; the owner, Marty, makes the rounds, and many of the diners appear to be regulars. The food was amazing. The gnocchi were perfect with a delicious red sauce. I had a chicken over spinach that was superb. The prices without drinks were very reasonable. There is free valet parking and plenty of street parking. An easy and delicious dining experience. The homemade canolli was a touch from the past! ENJOY!

Very tasty food but service rushed

By STFHunt |

We had a great meal at Matt Anthony’s, It was very tasty Italian food and plenty full also. My only gripe was how fast the service was and for what looked a very family oriented restaurant with the family photos on the walls would have meant someone may have taken a bit more time with us and maybe spoke to us a little more. We was in and out within an hour...way to fast for a nice restaurant and a romantic evening.

Ok food bad attitudes.

By Phil O |

The food was decent at best. I had a traditional spaghetti and large meatball that was overcooked and a cannoli for desert. The parking attendant has a bad attitude and after you eat, the will rush you off.

Never going there again.

By mlading |

Who uses canned mushrooms on Veal Marsala? Disturbingly salty and canned mushrooms again on Veal Saltimboccco. Service was terrible. I cannot believe the people who like this place. The side dish of mostaciolli had overdone pasta and very watery marina sauce. We were never asked how dinner was or I would have said I really can't believe they serve canned mushrooms for $24 entrees.

best place in chicago !

By Katy K |

love this place ! I always bring my business associates and family to Mart Anthony. This place is first of all delicious! The owners and staff are warm and friendly. I feel like I am at a family party. The bartender Katy is as sweet as apple pie. I highly recommend Mart Anthony! You will not be disappointed! 5 stars in my book.

Neighborhood favorite with an Italian flair

By Allen21096 |

We stopped for lunch and really enjoyed the place. It is like an upscale neighborhood tavern, but upscale with an Italian flair. Certainly, something can be said about the wall that is filled with photographs of Frank Sinatra. There was a nice ambiance, as well. The staff was very friendly and attentive to us. My grandson had the mostaccioli from the kid's menu and it turned out to be a huge portion, which he did seem to enjoy, especially with the warm bread and the oil & parmesan cheese. We had one of the specials which was a black linguini with shrimp and the sauce was very tasty. I tried the meatball sandwich and I found that it was done well and tasted really good. They do have a fair selection on the menu. Definitely, worth a return visit.

Neighborhood place....

By Tman312 |

Friendly staff and atmosphere with large Italian menu. It was our first visit where we came with a Groupon. It couldn't have been better for a neighborhood restaurant/bar with good simple Italian food on a week night. No special occasion here just good food, friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. If you live in the area it's worth a visit.

Excellent Dining Experience

Mart Anthony's is a excellent family oriented place. My family and I went there for dinner one night and had one of the best meals I've had in a while. Definitely will be going back.

Thankful for the Groupon

By bas2sb |

We were excited to try this neighborhood restaurant when we purchased the Groupon. The restaurant looks great on the outside and quaint on the inside. We had reservations for 6 people but when we arrived our table was set up for only 5. They pushed another chair up to the table and set down another place setting but basically left it for us to rearrange the table once we sat down. The first baskets of bread contained crusty, hard, overcooked loaves and the next loaves were still disappointing. There was definitely not enough dipping oil. The menu choices were great and each of us ordered a different entree. The waiter took our order promptly but walked away so quickly that we actually had go find him to add on another appetizer. Perhaps he was understaffed but we found him very inattentive. Meal portion size was generous and all 6 of us were pleased with the basic presentation and great quality of the food. The sausage and peppers appetizer was amazing! With so many other choices of restaurants in the area we definitely would not go back without another Groupon.

Small Restaurant, Great Flavor

By Stacey A |

I found this restaurant on Groupon and was able to get a great deal during our stay in Chicago. The location is great for a date night and the menu was pretty good. We had the risotto with shrimp and scallops and it was so delicious i almost licked my plate! The bruschetta wasn't a favorite but still pretty good nonetheless. I would definitely go back.

PIACE MOLTO

By Theresa N |

This is the place for me! Valet parking, nice bar setup, attentive service etc. Was there last nite with co-workers for dinner. Now it can be a bit on the expensive side but there are dish items under $20. I settled on the grilled Whitefish Vesuvio over Angel Hair Pasta. It was fabulous, a huge thick piece of fish, and for me it was done just right, olive oil, oregano, Italian seasoning etc. My co-workers said they would definitely order it for themselves next time. I truly enjoyed it!! The one item I would shy away from is their stuffed Artichoke. No artichoke stuffed or not should ever cost $14, way too expensive. I think Mart Anthonys is a great restaurant and food is done very well! I think you will enjoy it!!

lunch on the run the best

By sholix |

if you want to grab a great lunch on the quick or dine in for lunch or dinner here you go and free valet parking

Food and service are amazing!

By FunTravelors |

My boyfriend and I go here every sweetest day. The baked clams and Mart Anthony steak are our favorite. But everything on the menu is great. The drinks are also very tasty! I highly recommend this place and guarentee you will definitly return after your first visit!

Good italian in the west loop

By Brian C |

Snatching up a groupon before a Bulls game was the name of the game last night. On the way to the game we stopped by Mart Anthony and grabbed some pretty good Italian food. I wasn't a big fan of the fried calamari. It was ok, but I think it was a little too overdone. The squid ink linguini was delicious with vodka sauce. The shrimp and scallops that accompanied the dish were a little overdone as well, however some of the scallops were done well. It really filled us up. My wife got the crab stuffed gnocchi in vodka sauce which she loved. The bottle of wine that came with the dinner was quite good. The value was exceptional because of the groupon and the food was decent, but the wine was delicious. Everyone who worked here was very kind and struck up a nice conversation. The lighting was a little dim for me, but had a romantic ambiance.

GOOD FOOD, FAST, FRIENDLY SERVICE

By JON W |

Everything on the menu is good. Established restaurant, family-owned and operated. Try the homemade gnocchi. Thick minestrone by the cup or bowl.

Never Disappointing

By Lsk0334 |

This is one of the better kept secrets around Chicago for Italian food. We used to go here a lot when we lived in Chicago. Order the chicken parmigiana, but be prepared to take it home with you. Great sauce, but they give you 2 chicken breasts which are quite large. Try the bruschetta, it's the best I've ever had. The filet is as good as any steakhouse. But if your thing is pasta, there's nothing better we've found. Warning - parking is difficult here.

An ok restaurant

By Nikki E |

I was disappointed by the lack of homemade items on the menu. My gnocchi were also way over cooked so they just turned to mush. The living social deal was a good value, if the food had been better.

Be sure to order the Braciole

By Taylor B |

There are many Italian restaurants in Chicago. But there is only one Mart Anthony's. Located at 1200 West Hubbard, in the city's West Town, Fulton Market, West Loop and River West neighborhoods, east of Ogden, this third generation, old school Italian eatery serves classic family recipes such as stuff artichoke, Tortellini Romano and Pappardelle Bolognese. And it also delights customers with traditional Italian favorites such as bruschetta, veal, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, lobster ravioli, tiramisu and cannoli. But owner John Campo, who with his two sons runs the business that his father Martin Anthony Campo established in 1981, introduced me to Braciole, a Sicilian import that combines filet tenderloin, prosciutto, fontinella cheese, mushrooms, red and green peppers, mostaccioli and light tomato sauce into a delicious entree. I started with bruschetta, four Italian meatballs, a bowl of minestrone and Caesar salad with shrimp. Then the Bradiole. For dessert, I chose the olive oil vanilla pound cake with vanilla gelato, extra virgin olive oil and dark chocolate shavings. Mart Anthony's is open from 4 to 9 Sunday through Wednesday, 11 to 9 on Thursday, 11 to 10 on Friday and 4 to 10 on Saturday. It has quite a history. Founded in 1981 at Randolph and Aberdeen, in what was Chicago's skid row area, it was relocated in 2007 to its current address at 1200 West Hubbard in the West Loop, in what has become a bustling go-to destination for restauranteurs.

Owner JPHOWARD and Assoc. Jack Howard

By MoeHoward836 |

Best owner and staff. Super visouvio sauce. Totally a family restaurant with a solid following. Great location great food very consistent for 30 years!

Off the beaten path, but worth the trip.

By Michael Nelson |

Took the train and walked here (bit of a hike). It's a very unassuming place, kind of like a neighborhood bar more than a restaurant. Glad we went though. Tried the Mart Anthony Filet which included delicious Roma tomatoes. Best part though was the Coppa Pistachio for dessert. I'm ready to go back just for that.

Amazing family style Italian

By Shelliu |

Amazing family style Italian restaurant in West Town that makes you feel like you stepped back in time. Service was outstanding, everyone was friendly and the food was great. I got the black linguine with scallops and shrimp and it was awesome. My husband really liked his lobster ravioli and my daughter loved the meatballs. Tiramisu was also great.

Warm Neighborhood Gathering Place

By Jocelyn S |

Great atmosphere, excellent food and friendly service. When visiting Chicago, we find it nice to get away from the places that most tourists and/or business people frequent. We'll definitely come back to this restaurant when we're once again in Chicago.

Great find!

By jlk427 |

Small, old school, neighborhood Italian joint. Food is fantastic! Loved our dinner and will for sure be returning!

Great Old School Family Italian

By Christine A |

Went here with my family (party of 7). I loved being greeted at the door. Stuffed artichoke and sausage with peppers for appetizer was good. The food came out fast, hot, and delicious. Everyone was pleased with their meal. Will be back in the future.

Wonderful Experience!

By Pam L |

So happy our son found this spot. We loved the cozy, relaxing atmosphere. The staff gave our granddaughter lots of attention, answered our questions & & were very friendly. The calamari was delicious as were the sausage with pasta & veal dinners. Nice wine selections also. Would love to return.

Good red gravy joint

By sleepster |

This is your typical Chicago neighborhood Italian "joint." That is a good thing if this is what you are looking for. The place has been around a long time and has earned a following by providing a good example of what it aims to serve. This is your standard "red gravy" Italian fare. The decor is in sync with the menu. The bar has some exceptional offerings at the top end. The food is not memorable, but hearty. The service is friendly and worthy of a good tip. Pricing is in line with what you are getting.

Great food, great service, great complimentary valet, pretty good location

By ssvvpp |

My group of four picked this location on a Saturday night, in advance of a Tom Paxton concert at the City Winery, just four blocks south. (The name of this place, by the way, is MART Anthony's, not Mark Anthony's.) We had purchased a 4-person Groupon and it was well worth it. Our server was very good, coming up with recommendations that pleased the palate. We had a grilled shrimp and calamari appetizer with paprika sauce, which came highly recommended by several reviewers. It was a bit too spicy for at least one of our company. The lasagna, while not the best I'd ever had, was well above average and worth choosing again. The whitefish was delicate and very tasty.

Very enjoyable evening

By tikigirl1961 |

Four of us had dinner here on a Sunday evening. Everything was great. The food was excellent and service was friendly and attentive. The owner greeted us like old friends even though we have never been before. Just a really nice neighborhood Italian restaurant. We definately recommend.

Hidden Gem - don't miss it!

By Gina D |

I had heard about this place and always wanted to try it... then I saw a groupon offered and jumped on it. What a treat! It's in a neighborhood off the "tourist" path and I couldn't have been more pleased! The service was excellent, the food was delicious and the feel was so homey and welcoming. You're literally walking into a corner, the bar greets you and the seating sits behind with outdoor seating as well. I had the white fish vesuvio and the staff made a vegetable substitution for me with out a hassle. Grilled calamari and shrimp appetizer was to die for and the sauce was not a traditional bright red marinara but a smokey deep bed of deliciousness - especially when we dipped the homemade bread in it! My date had the veal lemon which was so bright and flavorful! We had the Limoncello gelato dessert which was just enough to top off the meal. Our wine choice was the cabernet which came with the groupon... it was like drinking velvet! Copper Ridge - I immediately bought some! The atmosphere was lively but not overly loud and very friendly. I can't wait to return!

Blast from the past!

By Jonathan1230 |

My son bought us a gift certificate for dinner at Mart Anthony's for Christmas. What a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, low lighting makes for a relaxed feel. Our waiter Spiro was very attentive and knowledgeable, he made us feel right at home. My wife had lasagna, which when it came, made us both gasp at the size. She cut it in half and took half home, and still couldn't finish the half on her plate. It was delicious, the pasta was al dente, the sauce rich with meat, and the cheese deliciously greasy, the way you only get with real full fat mozzarella, no reduced fat cheese here. I had the chicken siciliano, twin sautéed chicken breasts in a fresh marinara with onion, green pepper, mushroom, and ripe olives. Tres bien. This is an old school neighborhood restaurant/bar. Don't expect artsy fartsy decor and small portions. What you get is honest to goodness, delicious, real food with plenty to share. Come hungry, leave happy.

Anniversary dinner success

By Melissa M |

My husband and I visited Mart Antony's for our anniversary. We had a groupon and the value was great. Had we paid the $75 real ticket, I would not have felt that way. The food was okay, but not the best Italian. The atmosphere was good. The restaurant was hard to find, but in a nice neighborhood. Alfredo sauce I would pass on.

Great experience

By MrsMarx |

My steak salad was the highlight of my month! I order it at many restaurants, but the amount of meat, and the quality, was just amazing. The lunch crowd was the perfect mix of businesssmen, families, and working men, people looking for great food and wine. The servers and waitress made sure that we had everything we needed to keep our baby happy, too. Comfortable and unpretentious.

Ya Gotta Meet Marty!

By InLoveWithChicago |

Such a great time - and the food is totally authentic. Bring friends here all the time, even had my wedding reception here. Marty will always make your visit special. What is the best part? The atmosphere. I know we are in the city, but this restaurant/bar will make you feel like you are a member of the neighborhood.

We had a delightful family dinner at Mart Anthony

By Anthony S |

We had a delightful family dinner at Mart Anthony. The food was delicious, the hostesses and servers were charming and professional. We dined outdoors and the decor was lovely. The drinks were excellent. It is a high energy restaurant. They have free valet parking. It is located at 1200 Hubbard Street, 1 block S of Grand. We highly recommend Mart Anthony.

Cozy and comfortable

By Janet G |

Charming small restaurant with inviting warm atmosphere-feels like a very elevated neighborhood spot where there are probably lots of regulars. Service was attentive but not intrusive and foid was delicious. A nice place for just a drink or a meal and a good place to linger. Will return

Cozy local Italian with great food!

By Patty M |

We visited the west loop location during marathon weekend. The food was very tasty. Chicken parm and homemade pasta were very good. It’s a great local Italian restaurant. Friendly staff and cozy atmosphere

Great Food, Great Service, Great Value

By PaulM36538 |

This quaint Italian restaurant has an authentic feel as a neighborhood restaurant. The owner and staff were very accommodating and the food was fantastic at reasonable prices. We started with the sausage and peppers which was so plentiful it probably could have served as our meal. For entrees we had lasagna and the lobster ravioli. Both dishes were also delightful, with light and tasty sauces and very generous portions. It was my first time trying this gem - will definitely be back!

Neighbor hood resturant.

By Graciousgourmand |

Wonderful neighbor resturant. People are friendly not over priced. Not fine dining just good food. You can eat outside or inside. Just a great Italian neighborhood resturant. Casual and just plain good. No fufu here.

Second to NONE

By Alex P |

Mart Anthony's is a fantastic Italian restaurant where the atmosphere is only outmatched by the quality of food an service. A great family owned spot in a great neighborhood. Would highly recommend.

Bad food. Couldn’t wait to leave.

By 482JamesS482 |

I rarely give bad reviews, but a bad dinner in a Chicago deserves it. Bland Italian bread. Gloppy, tasteless Caesar salad. Tasteless salmon special. And we waited an hour for the not good food to be served. The owner and waiter were nice but the food was not good. And there’s a loud motor or condenser running in the back that makes conversation and relaxation very tough. Was glad to get out.

Lunch with mom....

By Laura M |

I had to do some work in the neighborhood of where this restaurant was. I took my mother with to get her out of the house. After working in the am. I drove around looking for a place that my mother could handle. This was perfect, because as soon as we walked in she saw the pictures on the wall of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the other rat packers. Well, we shared an amazing salad that had the most tender and tasty sirloin on it. Wonderful bread and a nice Sauvignon blanc. Ended with a caffe macchiato! We had a lovely time together and most of all she loved it! Wonderful waitress.

Sausage and Peppers-YUM!

By Mickie T |

We had appetizers and a light dinner so we'll need to come back and try more entrees. We had fantastic appetizers: Sausage and Peppers and the Grilled Calamari sauce is to die for! The service here was excellent and the staff couldn't be nicer! Come in and enjoy a great meal tucked in a quiet neighborhood.

Traditional Italian Neighborhood Spot

By WunderlustDuo |

This is a great neighborhood spot in the West Town (River West) area on West Hubbard Street in Chicago, and it's got a really welcoming and homey feel. The service is great, everyone in the place greets you warmly and makes you feel like you're dining with family, and they had the same hospitality as we left. We got a table for 2 on a slow afternoon and were well taken care of throughout our late lunch. The bartender was our server, she was very nice and attentive, and made a great martini! We had wished they had a resposado or anejo tequila, but otherwise their bar was pretty full, and the wine list looked pretty comprehensive. We ordered a couple appetizers to start, the Antipasto salad and the Sausage and Peppers. Both were large portions, and were extremely flavorful, prepared just as you might expect. The service and preparation is pretty traditional throughout, starting with the warm Italian bread and butter to start. For entrees we had the Sausage Patty Sandwich and the Chicken Saltimbocca, and they were awesome. The sandwich was huge (served with a pile of fries) and the Saltimbocca was really delicious, served with 2 chicken breasts, and the portions of both dishes were huge. We came hungry and still had to box things to go. All in all this place is a real winner, serving traditional Italian food that delivers on both quality and quantity, and the prices are very reasonable considering what you get. The music playing was also great.... songs like "Sherry Baby" and the like, which added to the charm of the experience. We would definitely return and recommend!

Groupon was a great deal!

By baybet1186 |

We had a girl's weekend in Chicago and bought the Groupon for Mart Anthony's... Great decision! Our server, Spiro, was great and knowledgeable of the menu. We ordered the artichoke and shrimp/scallops appetizers. The chicken parmesan was delicious! Gnocchi was alright. We are so happy we stepped outside the box and found this little gem:)

Nice corner spot

By TonyM1530 |

Had the Eggplant Parm, which was very good. Others in the party had some of the other dishes and were happy with their selections. Nice area and not too, busy which I like. Friendly staff. Great service. I'll be back. My kind of spot.

nice atmosphere, average to less than average food, don't go without the Groupon

By JP |

My husband and I just visited over the weekend because we found a great Groupon to use. It was 20% off day when I bought it, so we paid $36 for "$100" worth of food/wine. The atmosphere was very nice. Good for a romantic date. The service was good also. The bread they gave us to start with had a crust so hard we didn't eat. We just ate the bread inside of it. The Groupon included one appetizer at a $17 value, two entrees at a $26 value each and a $30 bottle of wine. We got the "$24" SHRIMP AND BROCCOLI LINGUINE for our entree. If we had paid full price for this I would have been very disappointed. It didn't have any flavor. Tasted like noodles in butter with shrimp and broccoli thrown on it. The "$30" bottle of wine was a bottle of Woodbridge. I can get a bottle twice the size at Costco for $10. That didn't bother me though, because it's a good wine. We got the SHRIMP AND BROCCOLI LINGUINE for our appetizer. That was also very average. I would not come here again. Without a groupon the food would be very overpriced for the quality. The location is not ideal either. We walked there from our hotel and made sure we went in time to get back before dark. Not an area we would feel safe at night.

We find this place to be very good and non pretentious

By Helen m |

The food is very good, the drinks also. Service is friendly and helpful, not intrusive at all. We always come here when we need an excellent white clam sauce-they never have disappointed us! We are very fortunate to be able to get there in under 20 minutes! First course is always excellent-no matter what we order. When we are leaving we are really satiated!

Average Italian

By TonyLovesToDineOut |

Stopped in for lunch while on business in the area. A nice neighborhood Italian restaurant. Very nice people and good service. I ordered the chicken Parmesan and was disappointed to get a chicken patty Parmesan instead of a chicken cutlet Parmesan. The tasty red sauce made up for the patty vs cutlet. Nice salad as well. I would recommend this place for a casual meal

The best neighborhood Italian restaurant in Chicago.

By altaira4 |

There's nothing trendy or hipster here... just a family-owned, neighborhood joint that serves up authentic Italian cuisine. Marty, the founder, has passed, and his son and grandsons manage the place. It's the kind of restaurant you used to find on Taylor Street before it went commercial. This restaurant has a loyal following. I've been coming here for years. My favorite pasta is the lobster ravioli with a rich creamy sauce. Yummy! When I have a taste for meat, I order the authentic braciole because most restaurants don't offer it any more... too labor intensive. And if I'm in a low carb mood (difficulty zipping my jeans), I get the steak salad. The service is efficient without being intrusive. My water glass and coffee cup never seem more than half empty. Dinner plates are not cleared until everyone at the table has finished. (It really bugs me when they take my plate away while companions are still eating.) The main dining room is cozy and has a long bar, and there's a newer large, attached room with surrounding glass, for an open feeling. Best to have a reservation, especially on weekends. A big plus is street parking and free valet service.

A very good and comfortable Italian restaurant

By JKWPittsburghPA |

We had a very good meal at Mart Anthony's on Saturday night. The appetizers were excellent, my wife raved about the mussels and the bruschetta was also very good. I had the veal saltimbocca and it was rich and tender. My wife had the linguine and clam sauce and she enjoyed it as well. There was six of us in the party and I did not hear one complaint. The food prices are reasonable but I can't say the same for the wine prices. The atmosphere is typical family italian and its somewhat noisy when crowded. All in all a very good meal and well priced especially with the groupon

Great service & great food!

By JRWaggs |

My wife and I were looking for a nice Italian restaurant but wanted something original. We came to Mart Anthony's and we absolutely loved the food. But the food wasn't the best part. The service and hospitality from the staff especially (Kaitlin the bartender & John the owner) made the atmosphere incredible. We had The Sausage & Peppers for appetizers = tasty! The veal marsala & Tortellini Roman as entres = filling. The Cannoli & Tartufo (Gelato w/chocolate & nuts) = to die for. Go and try for yourselves!

IACP CONFERENCE MEAL

By Glndj |

We booked the restaurant for our Arkansas delegates who attended the IACP conference. Everything was wonderful-the meal was excellently prepared! A small venue in the west part of Chicago in a neighborhood. A great find! Will definitely be back next time in Chicago.

John Campo and sons do it right

By Taylor B |

My wife is half-Italian and I love Italian cooking so it explains why we have been married for 45 years. When dining out, which is frequently, we seek out the best Italian restaurants. In Chicago, that isn't a difficult task. Mart Anthony's Italian Restaurant is on our list. Located at 1200 West Hubbard Street in the Fulton Market, River West and West Town neighborhoods, east of Ogden, it was founded by John Campo and sons in 1981 and moved to its current location in 2007. Open from 4 to 9 daily and at 11 on Thursday and Friday for lunch, it is an old-school operation that offers family-style dinners for delivery and pickup only. Unless it's pizza or ribs or Thai food, we prefer dine-in. And after examining Mart Anthony's expansive menu, we knew we had to enjoy the experience from the front row. We started with minestrone, bruschetta and Nana's meatball salad with two meatballs over iceberg lettuce, olives, tomatoes and cucumbers. Entree? Meat ravioli or meat lasagna or spaghetti in home-made marinara sauce or grilled salmon or whitefish Vesuvio or veal parmigiana? All were tempting. But my wife chose veal saltimbocca sauteed with garlic, white wine, spinach and mushrooms topped with prosciutto and fontinella cheese and served with mostaccioli in home-made marinara sauce. I couldn't resist Mart Anthony's 14-ounce filet mignon lightly encrusted with imported pecorino romano cheese in a pomodoro sauce with baked potato and a side of mostaccioli in home-made marinara sauce. For dessert, we were overjoyed with large portions of home-made tiramisu with mascarpone cheese and lady fingers soaked in espresso. It doesn't get any better than this. Even if you aren't Italian.

This is not real Italian Food.

By graceamante64 |

Parking is very difficult in the area unless you get lucky and find an empty spot. There is only street parking but signs indicate it's Parking Permit only so what is one to do? The restaurant offers Free Valet Service but not sure where they park the cars. The food is really disappointing, I would not be surprised if it's not a real kitchen back there (microwave cooking only) with not a real chef because that is what the food taste like. I purchased two Groupons because I got this restaurant confused with another one :-( the first time I got Eggplant Parmesan, very disappointed. Again, I would not be surprised if they use can or bottled pasta sauce(really). We were SO disappointed. I love dessert so we tried the Cannoli Cake for $7. It was dry and it tasted old. I should have complained and brought it to their attention that this DRY cake taste like it's three days old but I just wanted to get out of there. Never again. Do not waste your time here, if you do, you will regret it. I do not mean to be a foodie snob but I've eaten in enough Italian restaurants to tell you the food is not coming from a real chef's kitchen. I bet any money, the "cook" does not have any professional cooking experience and just microwaves everything. I couldn't wait to use up the other Groupon and be done with it. This was a real bummer. We are so surprised and suspicious about the good reviews.

Hidden Chicago Gem

By Michelle R |

For those of us who live in the city and look for restaurants that make you feel like you're at home, well this is the place. Free valet, great food, you'll be greeted by the friendly owner when you walk in. If you want pizza, pasta, great Italian home made dishes, you must visit. Their steak salad is the best. They have excellent grilled calamari! Must try!

Fair at best.

By judgebuff |

Tried Mart Anthony's for a carry out dinner after purchasing a groupon. Ordered two entrees at a cost of over $50. Both were average at best. Although the pick up was right during the dinner hour, there was virtually no one in the place except a group of men at the bar. When we got home we discovered that they failed to include bread with the order even though they repeatedly assured us that there would be. We called to advise them of the situation and the manager was dismissive. "The bread is free. We don't have to include it." There are many better Italian restaurants in Chicago in my opinion.

Meh. (Maybe it was a bad night?)

My friends had the Groupon everyone is mentioning, so we decided to check this place out. We had the Stuffed Artichoke appetizer (okay, but not spectacular) and split the Stuffed Gnocchi Arrabiatta and the Fettuccini Carbonara pastas. The gnocchi itself was very good....nice and light...but the sauce was horrible. It was dried out, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp too long once plated. I'd like to try the gnocchi with a different sauce, next time. The fettuccini was pretty solid. Of course, how bad can butter and cream ever be?! So, all in all, a fairly decent meal, but I won't be rushing to return. And, as a side note...it would be nice if the young woman hostess could manage to tear her eyes away from her phone for a minute or two when "greeting" arrivals and showing them to a table. (I use the term "greeting" loosely...she gave the impression we were interrupting her screen time by arriving at the restaurant.) PS - The Groupon IS a great deal, though.

Magnifico

Cozy restaurant near the west side of town. Portions were "Large" but very tasty. Seasoned perfectly. The arribiata was some of the best in town. Service was top notch. I would go back....Only drawback was that the menu was "too" large with too many choices.

Food was so good!

Went here during our family trip to Chicago to check out the Italian food around here. Mart Anthony's did not disappoint! We ordered the grilled calamari and after we finished it I found myself dipping bread into the extra sauce it was so delicious! For an entree I ordered the Lobster Ravioli and once again it did not disappoint. The food, atmosphere and service were all delightful and I'm looking forward to coming back next time I'm in Chicago.

Our final night in Chicago

By David R |

A rehearsal dinner, a wedding, a White Sox game and our final night in the city, where to eat? The groom suggested Mart Anthony's and all seven of us enjoyed the street side dining on a cool night! From shrimp diavolo to spaghetti and meat sauce with fish, shrimp, scallops and black linguine everything was delicious! Service was excellent and everyone had a great last night in the city!

Good Italian food in a cozy setting

By Patti S |

Used a Groupon and had dinner on a Tuesday night with my husband. I had the Whitefish Vesuvio - very good, and my husband had the Steak Salad. As always the quality of the steak was excellent and it was done to perfection. Good portion too. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the salad part of the salad. The greens were somewhat wilted like it had been sitting in the dressing too long, and the dressing was unremarkable flavor-wise. Grilled calamari - good but too much heavy sauce. Service is the best and I love the warm relaxed atmosphere. Free valet parking too!

Best Italian Food I ever Had!

By Leslie M |

Incredible food, as well as the service and how they treat everyone like family! Highly recommend. Marty is fabulous as well as the waitresses and bartender. Everyone that goes feels like they are at home!

Great food and atmosphere

Wonderful meal!! The stuffed artichoke was fabulous, and the lobster ravioli was perfection! We loved everything! The outdoor area is so inviting, warm and cozy even on a cold night. It was a very enjoyable evening, and we will definitely be returning.

Keep your options open

Travelled to Mart Anthony with some relatives for a nice post-holiday evening out. They had dined here several times and spoke quite highly of the place-we were looking forward to an enjoyable evening. We were late for our reservations so our table for seven was given to another party - perfectly understandable. We ordered cocktails at the bar and they were prepared by a wonderful bartender with a generous pour. The menu is full and varied with all the classic italian dishes represented. Pasta, beef, veal, chicken, and fish were all represented. Our starters included baked clams, manhattan clam chowder, and ceasar salad. The clams were large and nicely seasoned and moist. Some at our table would have preferred a slightly drier (less moist) clam. The manhattan chowder was well done. The salad was generous but the dressing was uninspired. Some additional seasoning to the dressing and perhaps and anchovie or two would have added some character. When it came time to order our entree's it seemed the kitchen was out of everything. Mind you, we dined at 8:00 on a Saturday evening with reservations in a establishment that was only 25-30% occupied, one would think there would be enought food especially when we ordered the "customer favorites". Several of us ended up ordering steak as a backup and this proved to be a good option. Ribeyes and NY strip were perfectly seasoned and cooked to order. Roasted vegtables as well as mushrooms-both nicely done- rounded out the meal. "The service was attentive and hospitable. The wine list was a little pricey for the selections offered and some of the selections were not chilled properly. Overall a good experience and I would be willing to return for a second view.

fantastic dinner with family.

We had an amazing family dinner at Mart Anthony. The food was exquisite, and the hostesses and waitstaff were both charming and professional. Dining outdoors, we were impressed by the beautiful decor. The drinks were fantastic, and the restaurant's energy was infectious. The complimentary valet parking is a great feature. We highly recommend Mart Anthony!

A very nice surprise!

I don't generally favor Italian restaurants, but this place is great. I dined on a Groupon coupon which made everything very, very affordable. The pork chops were plentiful and cooked to perfection.

Tasty little spot for Italian

By celisa s |

We went out for a romantic dinner and it wasn't what we expected, but it was pretty good. We loved our food and watching the White Sox game on the TV. Quaint little Italian place away from downtown.

Always a Groupon and always Good

By Chicago-BB |

This is a neighborhood restaurant. We've been here four times and seen some regulars every time. The owner always stops by the table to make sure everything was good. The bread keeps coming. The water gets refilled. The food is good. And when you can always find a Groupon to make the meal cheaper, what more can you ask? Here's what we've had: chicken salmtibocca (me, three times) chicken carbonara, shrimp diavolo, shrimp and scallops black linguini (hubbie twice) chicken vesuvio (takes 30 minutes so plan ahead). The building is vintage and pictures of the family owners throughout the years decorate the walls. Eat here. I promise.

Fantastic

Visited on Saturday 12th for early dinner before the Bulls game and to carb up for the marathon! Staff were really friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. Food was absolutely delicious, would absolutely recommend.

Great Little Place for Dinner

By IllinoisCookie |

We went here with a groupon and it was worth it. The appetizer was delish and the entree's were very good. The wine selection was bad. The service was fast and friendly. The manager on duty that evening was very accommodating since there was a mix up on tables. I recommend this place for dinner..

Old style Gem

By Joseph C |

This is a non pretentious old style Italian family friendly restaurant. It is a great spot for reasonably priced, well made cocktails ,at the bar or table. The dinner menu is extensive and includes all the standards many of which have, for some reason, disappeared from many of Chicago's Italian restaurants. Prices are overall reasonable and service, at every level is warm and efficient. For example, .even though we arrived by taxi, the valet extended a warm greeting and opened the door for us. Our shared appetizer, entrees and dessert were all tops, The premises are comfortable and attractive and there is lovely outdoor seating.

Nice neighborhood spot

By KauaiLover |

Sat outside and enjoyed a nice summer evening. The Caesar salad was disappointing. No cheese and seemed like regular lettuce in some sort of white dressing. The chicken saltimbocca was excellent and so were the grilled vegetables we ordered with it instead of a side of pasta. My husband's salmon was also good. The service was a little spotty, but overall, a nice experience.

great neighborhood find!!

By eyeu |

Located a few blocks from the roaring West Loop restaurants on Randolph. A wonderful Italian place! Free valet and lots of street parking available. Decent wine list but for a $15 corkage, brought our own. Started with grilled calamari, sausage and peppers and antipasto salad for appetizers that did not disappoint. The white fish vesuvio was very special. The chicken parm and the eggplant caplresse were also first rate. To top the meal was a great spumoni. Service was excellent. Staff greeted us like we had been there before. Our first time but not our last. Prices were so reasonable.

Great Neighborhood Italian

By BenitoM |

This place is always available with a deal for 2 or 4 on Groupon. My fiance and I have gone several times. You won't find a better Italian meal in an authentic neighborhood spot this close to downtown. Its a fantastic spot I had to recommend as its a typical Friday night dinner spot for us.

Dinner date

Groupon delight, bottle of wine, appetizer, and 2 entrees. Veal saltimbocca, and fettichini sophia , were wonderful as was the service from Victoria our bartender. Give this hidden gem a try!

Great Italian food that's popular with locals. Service was very good and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Free valet parking available.

Delicious!

By Kristy F |

Great food with large portions and excellent service! The atmosphere was very cozy and the music added great ambiance. Would definitely recommend the steak, gnocchi, and linguine as well as the grilled shrimp and calamari as an app. The gelato and cannoli were delicious to finish off our meal! The location is a little out of the way but it's worth it :)

Perfect Place

By Mike F |

We have been to Mart Anthony's 3 times in the past 4 months and it gets better everytime - The most recent was with a party of 16 people - the food and service were exceptional!! John and Michael have a great place - We have another dinner planned - Just a great little place...

What a find

By Jimc82 |

I was taken here for a business meeting / dinner and found so much about this place to rave about. It is something out of little Italy and reminiscent of some old movie. First and foremost is the food. Simply outstanding. I got to sample quite a bit and found not one thing to even be average. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. The service is great.

True Italian!

By K Rae |

True Italian! Food was delicious. Great wait staff. Quaint Italian atmosphere. Will visit again. We were on a time frame for a concert and they made it happen. Excellent location within a 10 minute drive to Allstate Arena.

Best kept secret

Wonderful neighborhood Italian restaurant feel. Friendly family run. Specialties that are not available elsewhere. It takes me 30 minutes to drive there, but the escarole beans and sausage is worth it.

Classic Italian in small neighborhood restaurant.

By Arthur R |

Met friends visiting from Belgium for dinner and wanted something Italian with vegetarian options. Mart’s did not disappoint! Small restaurant with outdoor patio. Classic Italian menu. Food was very good-fresh and delicious. Service was excellent! Only complaint, and a minor one at that, is that there’s no need for the background music (even though I loved the mix), as the noise level can be challenging. Even so, definitely worth a trip!

Comfortable, neighborhood feeling!

By Michael O |

Dinner with my wife and we were pleasantly surprised! Good crowd with locals that made the environment feel really comfortable. A waiter that suggested delicious entrees and a wonderful appetizer. Definitely a good place for any occasion.

Meh Too

By alwayswell |

The best part: service was very good - attentive and concerned. Foodwise, this was a very middle of the road " red sauce" Italian place and, as others have noted, without a Groupon, overpriced for quality and quantity. Maybe the presentations were like grandma used to do it, but we thought they looked sloppy. It' s been around for 30 years, so I guess it' s an OK neighborhood place, but I wouldn' t go out of my way.

Took a chance and was pleasantly surprised

By Rockabird |

We had a recent birthday lunch here. I wasn't quite sure about it because of the location but it was recommended so we tried it. It is a great place for comfort food for a cold winter lunch. We ordered soup, eggplant parmesan, pasta, and salad. All delicious and well prepared. No fancy tablecloths or dishes but the food is down to earth the wait staff very friendly and helpful. Don't let the outside of the building fool you!

Classic Italian!

By brmusicman |

Craving some classic Italian food on a rainy Chicago night, we headed to Mart Anthony's for dinner. We had an enjoyable time. It's a neighborhood establishment and a bit of a step back in-time. But that's it's charm! It had an unassuming decor and we felt totally comfortable in casual clothes. The crowd was a neighborhood one--staff members knew many of the customers--and most definitely not a scene. Service was welcoming and pretty attentive across the meal. It was clear the waiter wanted us to enjoy the food and have a good time. It was easy to find something to like on the menu, which featured Italian classics from pastas to fish to chicken to veal. Everyone enjoyed their food. We started with some bruschetta, classic in its flavor and presentation. A Caesar salad was classic, too; it didn't overwhelm with flavor, but it was fresh and crunchy. Dinner mains were excellent--chicken parm was cheesy as you'd like, and eggplant parm had a nutty bite. A whitefish served over pasta was delicious--perfectly cooked, with wonderful butter and wine flavor. Spumoni was great for dessert; the only disappointment was the chocolate cake. Wine was delicious--several Italian varietals by the glass. And they made a spot-on Aperol spritz, as any good Italian joint should. Would definitely return when in the mood for a neighborhood Italian spot.

Great Restaurant with Free Valet Parking!

I highly recommend Mart Anthony's Restaurant for great Italian food in the heart of Chicago. The prices are fair and the food is great. The free valet parking was a nice and greatly appreciated touch.

Not so great

By Carl S |

No Marsala wine in my Chicken Marsala. Out of the beer I ordered. Stale bread to start. I’ll give it 2 of 5 stars!

I'll come back to dine here again and again!

By crunch6 |

Thank you to Heather for making our dining experience last night before Roxy Music so wonderful. It was our first time at this old school Italian restaurant and we will come back before anything at the United Center. I loved that you have a back patio, too! I loved the Italian Vinaigrette!

a dinner at Mart Anthony is always a memory well recalled

I and my family anf riends have been fans of Marty's as long as I have been in the West Loop 30+ years. My children grew up there and my clients and friends always want to return.I am sad that Marty is gone but as I would have expected John and Michael have taken the place forward. The Mart is an institution is the neighborhood. If you are there for lunch stop by Bari foods for italian specialities or D'Matos for bakery goods
