We ate dinner here our first night in San Francisco, we ordered the udon noodles, spicy chicken bowl, a chicken and broccoli hibachi and two sushi rolls. The sushi rolls were ok. We've had much better. The chicken and broccoli... Was just not good. The sauce tasted weird and I couldn't get over it. Plus the portion was small maybe like 8 pieces of chicken. Noodles were good and the spicy chicken bowl was good. I would have walked a little farther from the hotel had I know it was average.

Our selection included miso soup, salad, rice & main course. The only disappointment was the charge for green tea.

Excellent verity of Sushi Nigiri and others... Very fresh and beautifully served. Liked it a lot... So did my son

Just off Union Square, the restaurant was a wonderful place to sit done for a good meal. The service was excellent (the restaurant was not full at the time) and the servers took the time to answer my questions. The food was well prepared and tasted great. I am not an expert on Japanese cuisine, so I can not comment on authenticity. The price was very reasonable for a location so close to Union Square.

There several sushi restaurants in the immediate area. After checking them out, this one had the best space and was larger than the others. The quality of the sushi was very good and their Mango vegetarian roll was exquisite. Had the Salmon by the piece and was excellent. The Halibut was ok. Definitely worth visiting.

Came here with my young family. Maru does sushi like Marie Kondo does tidying... just perfection. Great experience.

Great food , well priced and well located near Union Square . A good menu selection and a definite must eat when in San Francisco. Highly recommended. 👍🏻👍🏻

The Resturant is next to Marriott Union Square where I was staying... I loved the atmosphere, Staff and the food. Perfect choice for me I ordered Sushi & Sashimi Combo for $30 (with soup and Salad) and it was really delicious..

We were here and sushi are with fresh fish and very tasty ! Nice place to visit and have a dinner ! !

Maru is a small restaurant in the neighborhood of Union Square on Powell and Sutter. You have to climb a little to get there. They have an extensive menu of sushi, both the traditional and some new combinations. Service is prompt and corteous. Did not asked for dessert.

Before heading out of the city after our day of playing tourist, we were tired and hungry. Since we didn't want to walk far, I looked for something close to the Grand Hyatt and the parking garage nearby. Maru Sushi fit the bill and had some good looking photos, so we checked it out. Daughter loved her roll, which was quite large compared to many SF sushi restaurants. I wanted noodles and was not disappointed with my dish. The noodles were very fresh and the beef wasn't chewy. The only thing keeping me from a 5 rating is we waited a very long time for the waitress to return with our bill when we were finished; being in a hurry to hit the road, this was mildly annoying. Otherwise, the service and food was good. We'd return.

The sushi rolls are fairly decent however they use surimi crab stick heavily in almost every roll as a cheap filler (a real Japanese restaurant would never use surimi in the first place) and considering the ingredients, prices are quite high. The deco is rather old but I guess this is common in this area. I would suggest there are better sushi bars in SF offering better value for money.

First time dining here; came with a friend of mine who recommended it as more for locals than tourists (I'm the latter). Overall, it was a decent meal for an okay price: two bento dinners, one nato maki and two cokes = $52 before tip. The food was fairly tasty and I had enough to eat without being stuffed. No problems with the service, although nothing stupendous. We arrived early on a Friday evening and easily found a table without a wait. By the time we left, the place was more full.

Terribly slow service and everyone does not receive nearly the same level of service. This took away from the experience greatly! The food was actually good...once we got it. We came here on a Sunday around 3pm; they weren’t too busy as far as traffic as only about half of the restaurant was occupied, maybe less. There were at least 3 other parties; 2 parties of 2, and a party of 1 that came after us that received quicker service. I’m talking about they had their full meals and were leaving by the time we received our entrees. Our waitress did warn us that there was only one sushi chef working that day so the rolls would take a bit longer; understood. We ordered 1 sushi roll; just one! However, we watched people who had came in after us receive their rolls from the sushi bar and we were sitting right in front of the chef, so we knew when he called out each table number that was ready. Our miso soup came 10 minutes apart from each other, so I watched my coworker finish hers and waited for mine. No kidding when I say we waited another 30 minutes just to get our salads! When we finally got our entrees a party of 4 had come in and sat next to us. We watched as they were checked on often and received their appetizers in a very timely manner. And would you believe they received 2 sushi rolls from the sushi bar and then our 1 roll came right after they received theirs and we finished our entrees! They clearly did not think we were important enough to check on and receive our food according to a queue. I have my thoughts on why WE weren’t prioritized, but I’ve shared enough on our experience. My coworker and I won’t be returning.

As it was as highly rated as it was, I left here extremely disappointed. Came here for lunch and ordered the lunch special bento box with gyoza, tempura, and the spicy tuna roll. The gyoza arrived soaking in sauce which made it way too wet on the bottom, the tempura was very oily as if the temperature to fry was too low, and the spicy tuna roll was just eh. On top of that, it took more than 10 minutes for the server to first approach the table when we were one of only two tables in the restaurant, and we had to ask for drinks or she wouldn't have provided them. If I was rating on the sushi alone, I'd give it a 3.5. Adding in the entire experience, it deserves a 2 at best and I will not be back.

… we had found this gem earlier in our stay in San Francisco! Visited it on our last night. Nice vibe, great staff and fantastic beer. Better value than many other places we had eaten at that week. Would go back again if we are ever in SF. Food super tasty and a great variety for sushi and non-sushi eaters alike.

Stopped for dinner and wasn't disappointed. Our sushi was fresh and delicious. Our favorite was LaBamba. It was spicy and tasty! Service was great!

Average sushi in a Korean owned sushi place.Cheap eat for SFO but quality average only. Sukiyaki has funny soya sauce smell.

Lovely place, friendly ever-so-polite staff. Constant stream of customers for lunch but not overly busy. The Potato Bug roll (fish) was exquisite. I only wanted a light lunch so didn't venture further but looking at the other diners fare, it all looked fab! Recommend.

My family are sushi experts. This place was pretty good. It's not an elegant place, but it does have a nice cultural aura.

Very little of the food that we ordered actually arrived! The food that did arrive was pretty average! Service was DREADFUL!! And then, on our bill, which we had to beg for, was the avocado rolls that we never received! They were gracious enough not to add the Teriyaki that actually did not arrive! Disaster for a Christmas Eve meal 😖😖😖😖

The sushi is good and the space ok. Service was a disappointment. Stressed waiter having little time for taking order, almost rude.

Searching for an eatery close to our inn The Sir Francis Drake so we went to Maru Sushi which is just over. We requested the Beef Teriyaki &Sashimi, The Chicken Teriyaki and the Tonkatsu and Chicken Teriyaki. Sustenance was simply normal.

Sushi restaurant in union square. Good spot to go to for take out, eating with a partner or with a big group of friends. Lots of selection to choose from and the prices are reasonable.

Kept seeing the Maru Sushi from my 24th floor window at the Marriott Union Square, and had to have sushi!! Ohhhh, the power of suggestion!!! I stopped in at about 4:30 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, and it was quiet but inviting. There were just two other tables of patrons, so the wait staff was eager to serve, and my California roll and salad were delivered quickly. They brought my beer before the food, so I could sit back and relax while I waited. I loved the California roll, it was beautifully presented, tasted fresh and could have eaten another... if I'd been piggish! People either seem to like seaweed salad or hate it. It's hard to rave over seaweed salad, so I'll just say that this was absolutely adequate - cool and tasty! Even after I got back up to my hotel room, and looked back down at the Maru Sushi, I kept thinking that I wanted to stop again before leaving SF! Would not hesitate to recommend it.

I ate here with a colleague. I had a Cali roll and a spicy tuna roll with a seaweed salad. It was all very good. The spicy roll was quite spicy which is nice. The prices were in line with other sushi places in the area. The one nit is that the service was a bit haphazard even though it wasn't busy. It took a while to get water and the check. Good food, tolerable service.

Stumbled upon this place as it was the closest place to the hotel we were staying with and one of our party had been here a few times before. The restaurant is very basic, it's the vibe of a fast food restaurant. Nothing wrong with that but this is a quick eat place, Simple and fast service. The staff there are very friendly and food was served quickly. The food itself is very tasty, the people who make the food clearly know what they are doing. I would stick with the sushi and dim sum. I had chicken and rice, the chicken was a little dry and sauce basic but it's the sushi and dim sum where this place is a winner. Recommended for a fast, cheap and tasty meal.

Pleasant low key restaurant with good sushi and a nice selection of chilled sake. Nothing exceptional but if you’re dining alone and want some decent Japanese food this is a good choice

A great place to stop for a bento box at lunch. The food was good, the service was pretty quick, and the restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but still very good and very fair for the price.

Sunday night before Labour Day... no need to book! Good food (try their Maki in a great variety) and beef teryaki. A little pricey but clean, quiet and in the heart of SF.

Came here for supper on a Wednesday evening. When we arrived, only a few other tables, but near the end the restaurant was full. I’m not sure if they are not used to a full restaurant but the service was very slow. And the fruit flies were annoying! But overall would eat here again and would recommend.

We found this restaurant during our trek up Powell to Bush to find our hotel. It was lunch hour and we were looking for a place to have tea. As it turned out, we couldn't resist ordering from the menu and enjoying soba noodles with tempura, sushi, and seaweed salad. The service was friendly and professional. All of the food was nicely prepared and presented. The tempura was crispy and tasty. The sushi was very fresh. We came back to the restaurant for dinner the following evening. The chirashi was very good; the fish very fresh. Our only disappointment was that we did not see a wide selection of sashimi and preserved vegetables in the dish. The prices were reasonable and similar to those found in other sushi restaurants. Maru Sushi was a good find.

The food rates highly and the choices are all very tempting. The wait staff can get a bit distracted once they have served you. I am not sure if cream cheese is all that suitable for sushi but the other items I had were very good. It would be good to explain the serving size of the meals as my starter was so big it seemed to be wasteful as it was main meal sized. I could not eat both my starter and entree due to the size of the servings.

Fresh fish Humble service Authentic Japanese Different options The only dish I passed on was the Tuna-fermented soy bean salad.

Food was excellent, service was ok. Happy they were able to seat our party of 8 immediately, we all enjoyed the meal. Before ordering we requested 3 checks and ordered as such so the waitress would bill accordingly. When the checks came, there were obvious mistakes with items on the wrong check, but then outright addition of charges and items that were not correct nor ordered (added liquor, sushi rolls, upcharges and items we still dont know what they were). Food was good, but won't be back as I kind of like to trust the people I give my business to. Don't downright steal.

We had been on a tour and after a 12 hour day a hot sake, good sashimi and miso together with a lovely chargrilled teriyaki beef one was very happy. Not the most elegant of restaurants but makes up for it with good fresh Japanese. Do try the oysters delicious!

Went there with a family including toddlers. The staff was very patient and nice. The menu offers a lot of orignal sushi assortments, and everything we order was tasty and well presented.

Very average sushi. We searched for sushi and this place came up short. We have eaten a lot of sushi and were not impressed with the flavor or freshness here.

Maru sushi reminded me very much of my time living in Japan. The food was excellent not over blown as some "new era" or "fusion" places and priced very reasonably. The fish was very fresh and generously cut. The specials were rare cuts and meats I haven't seen for a long time. It was a great experience. The restaurant is only two blocks up Powell from the St. Francis and Union Square. If you are looking for great sushi and other traditional Japanese food this is a great place to visit and it is close to everything.

Good sushis, tasty in a laid back setting. Very good service. Try the japanese rice beer; very good! I will go back without hesitation.

As Aussies currently living in Utah we’ve been deprived of fresh sashimi for too long. It was lovely and fresh and the service was good. Don’t be put off by the decor, which is a little tired. The menu on trip advisor must be out of date as the prices were quite a bit higher than listed, but for us, it was worth it.

This is the perfect place to pop in on a week night for some fresh sushi at reasonable prices. My favorite is the rolls with fresh scallop, you don't get that everywhere, but everything is very fresh and tasty.

If you are in Union Square or on Nob Hill, worth eating here. Very nice staff, delicious sushi and udon bowls. Yummy Lava cake. Good for families, alone or a group. Only cons- no kid chopsticks, and the tea is just a tea bag in a cup.

3.5 Stars. Food was good (we did carry-out), but this food is BY NO MEANS Japanese. The Chicken Donburi is essentially a variation of General Tsao's Chicken - a classic American Chinese dish. The miso soup served with the Donburi was good and the closest thing we had to what could be considered Japanese. At $14 our General Tsao Chicken Donburi was charged at a Japanese price for average Chinese food.

Not bad for a light lunch or dinner if you're traveling in San Francisco. English, Japanese and Korean speaking staff to help choose your choice or favorites.

Food was not bad. However, one of the dishes was uneatable. The beef Teriyaki was chewy not tender. Can happen but the response of the owner and waitresses was beyond rudeness. Not a good place to eat..!

I'm not a big sushi fan but my daughter and BFF are and thought it was great. But the real winner was the shrimp tempura - absolutely perfect. It was light crispy and flavorful. My companions agreed best shrimp tempura ever!

Dinner here this week was nice, if not particularly filling. As a tourist, one often orders too much food in the US, so we ordered a smaller order anticipating that the serving sizes would mean we had plenty to eat. This wasn't the case - the serving sizes were more international and fine, but not enough. Easy fix - we ordered more. The sushi selection was fine, though nothing special. The salmon and salad equally OK. Ordering additional California weather hand roll was nice as was the Powell special. All in all a good place for a quick bite, but not a place to travel to for a special meal. But if you are hungry and close - drop in and order a little extra.

The place is not bad at all but there is nothing really special. The best actually were the plain vanilla maki and nigiri pieces and the rest was a little disappointing in terms of flavour. Service was very quick and correct. Interior very outdated.

This delightful restaurant is tucked away on Powell Street. It was recommended to us by local SF residents....It did not disappoint! The sashimi and sushi was fresh, respectfully prepared and beautifully presented. The miso shiru is the best we've had since leaving Japan. The service was perfect, pleasant and welcoming. What a delight. Highly recommend!!

The sushi was absolutely delicious. We went for dinner twice. Enjoyed the sushi rolls Romeo & Juliet, Go-Go, Mango/Salmon, and The Lion King. I would have given it 5 stars but they did get our food order messed up both times we visited. It was still fine but communicate carefully.

This small sushi restaurant is located on a road where SF cable cars are running, which I found entertaining to watch while experiencing the menu. The ingredients felt fresh and the taste was somehow above average. The interior of the restaurant however was rather basic. On balance, it felt fine and I visited it twice.

After the first disappointing visit, I thought I would give them another chance. Bad mistake. The sushi/ sashimi here is old and dry, dull and dreary. The venue certainly looks the goods with loads of red lanterns out the front and timber everywhere, but don't be fooled, the guy chopping at the raw fish with a chef's knife (that's right - they don't even use sashimi knives) is no talented expert and the lack-lustre meat he fumbles onto the plate wouldn't qualify as sushi-grade in most countries. To add to the experience, the chef openly abused the waitress and then muttered insults to her as he worked behind the sushi bar in front of all the customers. A really good look, though he was nice enough to me. Do yourself a huge favor and walk 20 metres up the hill, turn left and eat at Toni Sushi like the locals - they know...

Very clean and comfortable restaurant with superb sushi. The staff seemed very nice as well. The cable car goes by out front and it’s nice to hear the bell ringing while relaxing inside.

A little bit too fishy and dirty. Stick to the rolls. It's what they want to push and it hides the poorer quality of the fish and the presentation can be more colorful. When a place can't get Japanese salad and edamame right you should just head to the door....sadly I was starving.

The chicken terriaki was not very good. The chicken was grilled on a charbroil grill with terriaki sauce drizzled on top. I could taste the charring on the meat. I was completely disappointed with my food. The two lady waitresses were so busy that they hardly had time to wait on us. Seems to be understaffed and not great food.

Maru was a second sushi place I visited during recent trip to San Francisco. It was next to the hotel were we stayed so convenient stop. It's also open a whole day, and we wanted to eat around 4 pm. Service was very friendly and accommodating. Fish selection was reasonable. We had over 10 different sushi, sashimi and one roll. Portions of fish were slightly larger than in Sanraku, and they were as fresh and tasty. Everything we tried was very much ok, and at the price it was great value. We had also an oyster shooter, which I recommend for everyone who never had it before. A definite recommended place and while the quality maybe is at 4-4.5, the overall value makes it clear 5.

Not bad at all, fair quality/price ratio, ramen quite simple for me, but Jalapeño Bomb was a nice discovery.

Not much to say, over and above the title. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The friendly service was backed up by the very tasty food. Very unpretentious just good food in comfortable surroundings.

We stummbled over this Sushi Bar just because it was near our hotel and went there twice it was so good. The Sushi here is amazing, particualalry the Tuna sashimi and nigiri. I have never had so much fish covering my rice !!! The soft shell crab hand roll was out of this world. The set menu sushi seemed to have some wierd choices but if you stick to traditonal sashimi, maki, nigiri etc you wont be dissappointed. My wife who doesnt eat Sushi had some amazing teryaki food and salad. The service was ok but much better on one visit compared to the other.

We ate here for dinner and both sushi, sashimi and udon noodles were good. Good place to go with the family. We would repeat :)

Went there because it's right across from where we were staying. Let's start with the food: the agedashi tofu was pretty blend, the sushi was insignificant, and the oysters were not extremely fresh. Next, service was a big problem. The restaurant was full, and there were only 3 waitresses, so they were over-extended. We asked for plates, and that took forever. We ordered a bottle of sparkling water, which also took forever to arrive. Overall, our experience there was not that pleasant.

Food was good but expensive for what it is. Serves aren't big and prices are the same than Melbourne casual Japanese places.

Most importantly, fish is really fresh, dionysus, dragon and philly sushi are recommended. Ambiance is average, service is good and fast. Just keep ordering!

No frills and service is blah... but quality sushi, and able to get a table upon walking in, etc. For a quick bite after long day, it hit the spit

We love sushi and have eaten it in many places. Of course SF will have great sushi restaurants, but we just wanted a basic place with great food. We found it. Big servings, at modest prices, with some of the best sushi I've ever tasted (ie the fish was extraordinary). A locals hangout, which speaks for itself Not too far from Union Square - another bonus. We'll be back

We ate here after a long afternoon of walking. Sushi was delicious and fresh. An unpretentious and relaxing find very close to our hotel The Taj Campton. Service was great with very friendly wait staff. Very reasonably priced. will be back.

If you like sushi or other Japanese food this is a good choice. Near Union Square and close to theaters. Good service and a large selection.

we dropped in by accident, on our way back to our hotel. diner like restaurant with some asian features. sushi kitchen and bar more authentic. owner a little bit difficult to reach out to, but service was adequate. food is great, fresh and very tasteful. no need to look for other place in this area.

Very nice food ; affordable prices ; excellent service. very close to the cable car stop and Union Square

So, I like sushi. Not as much as my darling Husband, but I do enjoy. We went for dinner in San Francisco tonight and has the best sushi I HAVE EVER HAD. It was fresh, it was delicious and it was priced appropriately. The sashimi was divine, as was the temoura! We only have 3 days here, but we will be back.

If you like Sushi, or Asian food in general, San Francisco is the city and Maru Sushi is one of the places you cannot miss. I really enjoyed the Rainbow sushi and their chocolate lava cake (not very asian maybe, but still very good)

Over all good experience with quality and fresh food. Service was friendly and atmosphere enjoyable. Sushi tools were a bit in the small side and I felt a bit hungry when I left.

The imitation crab in the Bay Scallop roll and the lemon in the Corona are evidence of the corners cut at this place. Disappointing...

Had a great meal in this lovely sushi place. Menu was varied and the chefs very happy to make suggestions. Portions were a good size.

Visited here twice on my stay in San Fran! The welcome was lovely, even when we came in 20 minutes before closing! The sushi is fresh, well presented and soooo tasty! The 2nd time visiting, the host remembered us and had a joke with us. The food may have even been better the 2nd time round. Would highly recommend!

Nice location on a hill that he cable car passes, often ringing it's bell in the process. Prices were reasonable, sushi was good, the restaurant was nice inside. Good quality place to grab some sushi while out and about.

Great food, reasonably priced, excellent service (got everything right), food was fresh, well presented, simple and flavoursome.

We went here having read the reviews and looked at the menu on line. We only wanted a simple meal and the chicken teriyaki seemed to be what we wanted. We are used to moist tasty chicken, soft rice. The only good thing was the miso. The chicken was as dry as my shoe leather. The salad was not great and the rice was also dry and seemed to have been sitting somewhere for hours. Hardly any service, never asked how we enjoyed the meal. Very disappointing. Won't be going back. How hard is it to grill a piece of chicken and add some teriyaki sauce?

We looked this place up online and it had great reviews. The place is humble but very dynamic and the food is very nice. There were many Japanese dining there so that also gave us a good feeling. It won't disappoint

Great food and very nice server!! Volcano, rainbow, and dragon roll were so yummy!!Priced on the high end but worth it. Highly recommend!!!

We stayed in Union square for 3 days. Glad we found this place. Best service we had by far!! Sushi fresh and prices reasonable.

I have been twice: you can see while the chef prepare your sushi, super speedy. Average price 50$ per person.

I had dinner at Maru Sushi with a group of friends and we had a nice time! I advise to take combination plate because is very affordable and served very well. It comes with Miso soup, salad, rice and two items of your choice from a big list of things. The food came very fast and the staff was very efficient and nice. On the negative side, the wi-fi wasn't working and the music didn''t fit the atmosphere of the restaurant. Overall was a very nice evening. I advise this restaurant if you're looking for good quality for an affordable price in a very good location!

I met up with some former colleagues this week. We stumbled on Maru last year during the same conference. It was good and decided to go there again. Sushi is tasty and service is good. Reasonably priced as well. Would go again.

Called by late for a quick dinner. Table was presented quickly and the food likewise. Would rate it average to good, no Eason to be negative yet not good enough to be a wow. If you like Japanese cuisine I would give it a go... chicken teriyaki probably to be avoided.

Not the nicest place inside but really good food, and we are very fussy eaters! We ordered the fried chicken, gyoza, spicy tuna sushi and salmon sashimi and everything was perfect. Freshest sashimi we have ever had, and loved the gyozas and fried chicken so much we ordered another serving of each!

The sashimi and sushi were so good. and the tempura and rolls were amazing. I would recommend this restaurant with no hesitation.

Great place for sushi and good service. You can eat till 11pm, which is perfect for a late snack. Some of the roll were falling apart, but that was the only minus we could find.

We could see Maru Sushi from our window at the Orchard Hotel. We went there the last night of our trip and had the best meal of our trip. Get the rolls pictured on the extra menu and hot sake.

I have been coming here for 10 years and unfortunately it has been getting worse. The food is ok. But stick to sashimi and sushi. The cooked dishes are more oily and leaning towards Chinese cooking. I had he bento box with sashimi, chicken Katsu and sautéed vegetables. This comes with salad rice and miso soup. The salad was very fresh, rice was very good. Miso soup was ready made/powdery. The sashimi salmon was very good, the chicken Katsu was not done very well, the batter was different and soggy. Still somewhat ok. However the sautéed vegetables were unacceptably over cooked and perhaps gone off. Inedible. Additionally, the tables the outside of bento boxes etc are sticky with oil. Need more cleaning and taking care on the fresh food. Considering the price not being high, I am pushing my mark from 2 to 3 here. I need to find other places to go I guess....

I stopped in for take away and my meal did not disappoint. The service was fast and friendly. The rolls were super tasty as were the gyoza and everything was packaged nicely for my walk back to the hotel.

Loved eating lunch here and enjoyed extremely fresh and tasty sushi and teriyaki. It is a little on the expensive side $$ but you do pay for what you get. I had the bento lunch box that you can select three different servings in the box from a big choice list. I selected tuna sashimi, chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu and all were fresh and delicious. They also had a fresh oysters special with a Japanese vinegar sauce that were lovely. The staff were very accommodating and very polite. I found nothing not to like about dining at Maru Sushi. If you love your sushi and sashimi, you will love this restaurant too.

After craving some great quality Japanese like we enjoy back home, this place served a god purpose. Fresh, tasty sushi and fast service.

We found this little place by chance on a trip to San Francisco. Great veggie sushi rolls, light tempura. Excellent service from Jeanette.

This was right around the corner from our hotel and was great for a late dinner. I ordered to go and it was ready within 15 minutes.

Very nice sushi. We enjoyed the place, the chefs and service in general. A restaurant we will recommend

Restaurant in Powell St, close to Union Sq. Checked Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. We ordered Fried Californian Roll, Unagi and Spider, (deep fried soft shelled crab). All well presented and delicious. We had the house green tea and also delicious. Service was fast and efficient, the food came quickly, no waiting time for a table. We did go early 6.45pm but most tables were full but with such good service tables were vacated quickly. Cost $27 +tip. It also offers take away.

i've had a great lunch here, friendly people looking after you and a big choice on the menu. Prepared in an open kitchen

I moved to San Francisco recently and started eating at maru sushi for lunch as it's so close to saks 5th avenue -Union square . I love their crunch role ! My husband came in to join me For dinner and their chicken teriyaki dinner is his favorite . It's a little hole in the wall restaurant across from the Marriott but oh so close to all the best shopping in San Francisco . It's well worth your time To eat here whether it be for lunch - get a bento box !! Or go for dinner it's always so consistently good and a great value . Portions are not that big so you may have to order a few things but it will be yummy !!

Had a really enjoyable meal here on my first night in SF on this trip. Very homily feel about the place. Wide and affordable menu. Very good quality of food and service. Children friendly. Would recommend this restaurant.

Located near Union Square. Food was good and reasonably priced. Ordered take out and it was ready in the time promised. Restaurant itself is small so plan accordingly.

This place seems to be a little overlooked as it was easy to get a table when other nearby restaurants were packed with more than 45 minute wait. Not a hug sushi fan but my friends said it was good but we were all swooning over the shrimp tempura - light, crispy and hot!

If you are in San Francisco, and looking for a sushi and japanese restaurant; you should try the Maru Sushi, the tempuras, sushi combos are fresh and delicious; try the chirasi its amazing!

We came here for an afternoon snack so as not to ruin our appetites for a planned dinner later in the day. We liked the food - ordered a combination of sushi, tempura, teriyaki - but the special sides (extra this, no that, some x on the side) didn't get paid any attention to. So for this I have to ding it two stars on the service.

There are a lot of good sushi restaurants in San Francisco, but this one stood out for us. We ate here on another trip 4 years ago and we were pleased to find it again. This time, it was a short walk from our hotel and the menu was interesting. Fatty tuna is an item that not every sushi establishment offers and it was a treat. All of the fish was fresh and the rice was the perfect consistency.

Wide selection of Japanese food. Good sushis and soups (ramen, soba, udon, etc). Service may not be as friendly as possible but overall the experience was good.

We stopped in to have a quick bite, late one afternoon. Fish was fresh and service was quick and friendly. Seemed like there were quite a few locals in here which is always a good sign. Enjoyed the miso soup and sashimi

This was a 3 day business trip but if you're Asian like me, you'd begin to crave for Asian food after a day of Western choices. If you happen to be in the union Square vicinity, you can find this cozy restaurant on the corner of Powell and Sutter. Yes that's one of the stops of the Powell Hyde cable car line. You can't go wrong with the bento box if you want to sample 3 dishes. Priced reasonably too and the service is fast.

TL;DR - Ripped off, poor service, lied to, awful food :( My boyfriend and I visited the restaurant after looking up the menus online, and we checked the menus outside the restaurant on Thanksgiving Day (it was closed for the holiday). The menus posted outside and online were the same. When we visited the restaurant the next day the menus seemed to be different, so I asked the waitress if they had changed their menus. She told us that nothing had changed, but asked me to show the menu I had seen online. When I showed it to her, she immediately broke into a loud outburst (which every nearby table could overhear) telling me that there was no way the restaurant could continue serving fish at such a price. That doesn't bother me - we're happy to order off the updated menus, but she didn't need to make such a scene. We ordered 1 order (2 pieces each) of toro, maguro, halibut, and uni. The halibut and uni were listed as market price, while the toro and maguro were around $6.50 - $7.00 each. Then, we ordered 6 pcs. of oysters (around $14.00) and one order of ebi tempura ($8.50). - Ebi tempura: only 3 pieces for $8.50? Nothing was of epic high quality, so we didn't appreciate the portion size. This seemed too high for some simple tempura. - 6 pc. oysters: they served it to us at the end of the meal when the ice bed under the oysters had already melted. This means that they had waited for quite a while before serving us the oysters. The (tiny) oysters were drowning in an overpowering, acidic sauce. I didn't even want to finish the order. - The sushi was bad, too. The quality of the fish did NOT seem exceptional or even average. It was under-average. The uni was especially bad. We felt sick all day after eating it. The waitress had advertised the uni and halibut as being especially fresh and highly recommended we order it. Aside from the sub-par food, the worst part of our experience was what happened when we got our bill. It was around $85 (up to $90+ with tip) for 8 pieces of sushi, 3 pieces of shrimp tempura, and 6 tiny oysters. This is ridiculous. When we asked for our itemized receipt, we noticed that the halibut and uni had been listed as $20 EACH. This is $20 for 2 PIECES of sushi while the other sushi prices were nowhere close. We have previously dined at highly rated sushi restaurants in other parts of Canada and the US, and this price (for sushi) was even beyond what we paid at luxurious, high-end sushi restaurants. We don't mind spending the money for quality, we love sushi! We asked our waitress what happened with the bill, and she went on another rampage, talking about the shortage of fish in the USA and the high price of toro and how hard it was to catch fish. Umm.... if that's really the case, then why haven't the prices at the other restaurants risen so high? She kept arguing without listening to what we had to say - we never raised our voices or said anything rude, and politely tried to explain our confusion. She wouldn't listen and didn't budge. I didn't really want to write such a negative review - I know that restaurants struggle, and that business is hard - but we would have appreciated more courtesy and transparency, as well as more honesty from the waitress. Specific requests for the restaurant: - Update your online menus. - Be transparent about how much "market price" means. If a guest orders something that is listed as "market price", it is common courtesy to inform them of the price. - Don't complain about how hard it is to catch fish when someone is confused about their bill.

The rolls were very delicious and the fish was incredibly fresh. The service was quick and efficient. The atmosphere was very laid back and very clean. Would go back next time we are in town.

2 of us got 4 regular rolls and a Nigiri roll and it was plenty of delicious food. The Salmon Belly Nigiri rolls was especially tasty!

Our first meal in san fran and did not disappoint. It made sushi lovers and non-sushi peeps all happy in our grouo Casual and reasonable.

We enjoyed dinner here. The menu had a good selection of sushi & assorted dishes. The sushi was so fresh. Excellant service. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

I came in starved and alone. Opened with agadashi tofu that was not good too big pieces not crunchy on the outside and a sauce that was a bit anemic The albacore was decent and so were the rainbow roll. No more. Unagi was good.

One of the best sushi restaurants in town. I love sushi and the best condition for good sushi is freshness, which is SuperB in this restaurant. The staff is also very kind and friendly. So it's a good start of your weekend or just for fun!

Hands down the BEST Japanese food I have ever had. Japanese food is my favorite. I eat it all the time. It is the only cuisine I can eat everyday all day. Nothing else needs to be said. I have had Japanese food everywhere around the world including Japan. This place Maru takes the cake. Must try if you love Japanese food.

Started off by ordering a soft drink which came out flat and was quickly replaced - not a great start. I ordered a combination of chicken teriyaki and tempura prawn and vegetables. The chicken was disappointing. It seemed dry and chewy - perhaps it was re-heated. The tempura on the other hand was very good. Light and tasty along with the miso and salad. A California hand roll was also had which was really good. A good meal but not a five star meal.

Right across the street form Marriott Union Sq. and open until 11:00 which was a godsend since we arrive at 9:45 and starving. Good sushi with a nice variety, even had ankimo and ama ebi. They threw in a few shrimp tempura with our fried shrimp heads.

The rolls (dragon roll & lion king roll) and the edamames where delicious. We ordered an appetizer that I did not like very much but my husband did. I would definitely come back.

I spent 6 years in Japan when I was in my 20s and when I tasted the miso soup I was transported back there again. Good food good service good value.

We ate here twice on our holiday. The food is superb! Good and friendly service from the staff. We highly recommend this restaurant.

This was a quick place to eat that had descent sushi and really fun rolls. The suprise winner of the night was a non-traditional roll called the Popeye roll. it had tempura sweet potato and spinach with peanut sauce. It was super fun to eat...not really sushi, but quite good non the less :-) Several in our party got Sashimi and other raw fish rolls that were good. Price was quite okay for San Fran :-)

We tried this restaurant on a Sunday evening which was on the way from Union Sqaure to our hotel. There was no queue so we were brought to a table immediately. We didn't order sushi and had tempura and udon. However one of our orders were misplaced/missed, so had to remind the waitress (she's polite and apologetic about that). The food was good and the kids loved it too.

Came here for a quick dinner. I ordered two rolls of sushi, and my friend ordered salmon teriyaki. Their sushi selection is very good, and the quality of the fish was also very good. We did not have any issues with the service, they ware both fast and friendly. Would definitely come back here!

I was on a solo trip to SF and Maru sushi was just around the corner from my hotel. I ate here a few times as it was easy to perch up at the sushi bar, read a book and enjoy a fantastic lunch. The food was delicious and the staff were lovely and attentive. I wish it were round the corner from my home!

Nice relaxing meal. Try the pot stickers very light. I was surprised by no hot towel at start of meal, maybe not in San Francisco.

I was told by a friend to have sushi in San Francisco and I am so glad we did. Decided on Mari Sushi as it was close to where we were staying and had gotten good ratings and comments. Between my husband and myself we ordered a deluxe sashimi and a few a la carte orders of sushi. The sushi were good but the real stand-out was the sashimi plate that had four different types of fish, including salmon and tuna. They were gorgeous to eat, melt in your mouth freshness. Put this meal over the top as the best during our two week trip to San Francisco & area.

Small Japanese restaurant near the Union Square. Fresh fish, fresh and delicious sushi. Reasonable price for food and wine. Very nice and friendly staff.

Quick friendly service and very nice food. Serves Anchor beers. Lots of vegetarian options. I had Ramen my wife had Tofu Teriyaki both were delicious and not oversized portions. Sushi being delivered around us looked great.

I'm not usually one to complain but everything on the menu in the restaurant was at least double the price as that given on trip advisor. Very disappointed with the food and quality. The "torched tuna tartare" was severely overcooked . We complained and the staff did nothing to rectify this - if I wanted to eat over cooked tuna then I would have bought a can from the supermarket (it was that bad)!!! I then read the bad reviews on trip advisor and there is one from 2014 with the same complaints about the menu pricing!? Did they rip us off because we are foreigners or are they luring customers in by offering low prices online?

While I had a standard combo dinner of sashimi and chicken teriyaki, the special board showed a wide variety of sushi include Monk Fish Liver, Uni and some others you don't see very often.

Our party of four has wildly different food allergies and preferences, and our orders were quite complex. The server did not bat an eye and delivered everything quickly and correctly. The sushi was fabulous! I recommend the unagi and the tako.

After leaving a close-by restaurant due to the noise level, we returned to this charmer where we had had a great lunch. Our dinner was equally as good and very reasonable. The staff was very attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
Not bad
Very decent sushi. Good service. Good quality sushi from ika to awabi (abalone) good atmosphere Maybe a little bit pricy but the quality is there probably not the best but worth trying if you stay in the union square area Should I go back. Probably yes!
