Great breakfast

By M K |

We went here for a late breakfast and loved it. Beautiful decor, great coffee, excellent food and simply orgasmic baklava. I would move in here but I have to go back to Boston.

Tea by the Sea, Masal Cafe

By bonbonturc |

We went here 5 people for late lunch thinking it would be an awesome Turkish restaurant. The place is huge, decorated wall to wall and even the ceiling (!), with giant Istanbul pictures on the walls. Service was fast, efficient. Menu is very limited to Cafe favorites. I guess we were more interested in Turkish style mezes, and main courses. We pretty much ordered everything from Turkish Menemen eggs, eggs with soujouk, Turkish breakfast platter, Sheppard Salad, Meatballs, Turkish Ravioli called "Manti", tea, coffee, desserts... Most of them tasted good, but the biggest let down on our part was, there was no beer. So, basically this is a Turkish Coffee house with tea, better for breakfast stuff.

Tea and sweets!

After our dinner we went for Turkish tea and Turkish dessert... oh and it was worth the 15 minutes it took to cook!! Kunefe! Yummy!! Love the decorations and the atmosphere! We have been here before and enjoy this place for dessert!!

GOOD & AFFORDABLE, by the SEA :)

Food was much better than the surrounding Turkish places and atmosphere was more lively and friendly as well. In addition they have a lot of typical dessert/cafe items you would actually see in Turkey

My husband took me out for my birthday weekend and I know he loves mediterannean food and thought it would be nice to try local spot close to home. When we got there the space was beautiful with modern cultural infusion of design. The greeter was nice to us and allowed us to sit wherever we wish so I chose. Please keep in mind the pIace was not packed at all. More waiters than tables to serve. My husband and I sat waiting. I had the view of all the waiters and no one would step up to serve us. I don't like the pull race card. I can't stand when people use that as a poor excuse to misbehave, so we waited to be served. I kid you not it was as if the waiters were trying to pass us off on each other to help us. Each of them made eye contact with me and would stand the in the distance act like they dont see more or look away. They look and as they pass my table they put their head down to not make eye contact with me. I didnt tell my husband anything because my husband is more forgiving than I. He then realized we were being ignored and we chalked it up to ok maybe in there culture thats how they move, but then we realized wait, the table before us is being serviced and they have more than 2 guests. So now I am clearly irritated. The waiter finally comes to take care of us as if he lost a bet and he moving rather fast as if he wanted to get us over with. I thought he wanted us to put in order for dessert one time so he dont have to deal with us a second time. Again its observation and Im just taking mental notes. We had our meal and it was alright the lamb was pretty dry but I liked the salad and beef. After we completed our dinner the waiter passed by many times never checking on us or even catching a hint that we were done and just sitting there with our plates stacked. I sat for 10 minutes and then signaled him over to order dessert and the check. The waiter knows we owe him payment and he keeps walking away from us then straddling around. How much time do you think we need to gather our payment. The other staff members are aware as well but no one jumps in. Then I get up with the payment book and stand up in the middle of floor so everyone an see we are standing with the payment and he finally comes over. I dont know if they encountered servicing a group of black people in the past they rubbed them the wrong way but I was offended. I don't like to carry on in public as people think all black people have no class. Anyone who decides to visit there be warned they may not be as welcoming and will walk egg-shells around you. You may not like me becasue of the color of my skin then you should not serve not me at all because my money is as good as anyone elses. BTW they add the gratuity inside the bill.

nice place, great location

This is a casual place, with some but not all Turkish food. It is fun to eat here, they have peasant dishes, but this is not a classical turkish restaurant, and could get hectic. Great place overall.

Good desert place with small food menu

By TravelNat8 |

The location is very nice, in historical Lundy building overlooking the bay. There is a huge desert menu and lots of teas to choose from but not a lot of foid options. Skip if you are really hungry

Nice place for desert

Very good Turkish tea, very nice location by the water. You can seat outside if weather is permitted.

Place to chill

By cbecklmt |

We went here just for a quick bite to eat. We had the Turkish coffee which was delicious and very strong. We also ate a rice pudding that was cooked in a small crock. I had a "bee cake" with honey and with cream โ€“ it was amazing! There is a huge staff here so there is always somebody to be attentive to anything you might need. The desserts are fantastic โ€“ and the view is great for people watching.

Not worth a visit!

As a parent of two young children I am always on the hunt for a place to somewhat enjoy myself or with my wife while also enjoying a moment with our little ones. As I was driving around town I saw an advertisement for their dining experience with a large play space for children. I checked their website, saw the photos, read a few reviews and talked my born and raised Brooklyn wife to going to Sheepshead Bay. For any local, you understand the eclectic cultures that are known for this area of Brooklyn. The area does have many great dining and entertainment venues. However, Masal Cafe is not one of them (at least the upstairs is not). The upstairs has old run down booths (we should have ran at the sight of them and the conditions of the menues) but given that young kids run about we gave them the benefit of the doubt. The menu was not that great for dinner, but the breakfast menu did look tasty. There was no alcoholic beverages! Understanding that it is a Turkish establishment we forgave them and ordered. The play place was big, but dirty. Black mold on the ceiling, signs that things had not been wiped down, and signs of neglect. The food was not that great. The place was run down, paint chipping, and in need of a remodel. The place has promise if there was attention to details, cleaner environment, better food, and a policy of not having to pay $10 for your kid to play if you buy the mediocre food! Until changes are made, this place is not for us. There are much better options for family night. This was a $100+ mistake on a rare night out for this family of four.

I always visit Masal when I am in NYC. The location is nice and atmosphere is wonderful. Their food is rather simple but very good. An excellent place to chat with friends.

great breakfast place

By alemargo |

This place is great for breakfast or coffee. We brought many different people there for breakfast and everybody is always happy. The service is fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable and omelets portions are large enough to fill you till lunch. So mostly we go for late breakfast 11-11:30 am and next time we eat again is at around 5 pm. It is that filling. Their Turkish tea and coffee are great also. After Sandy they changed decor and it looks more modern and chic.

Left after 15 minutes waiting for service

By Tavribruk |

It was not busy, we were seated and given out menus with ragged edges, first warning sign. After fifteen minutes of waiting we decided to leave. Manager was surprised when we told him about this on our way out.

Family Friendly Cafe, Great Food, Friendly Staff,

By Sรผleyman A |

One of my favorite cafe in the city, they have an unique menu. I strongly recommend Kumpir and Gozleme, they have one of the best turkish tea and coffee.

AC was not enough

By katecelik |

I have been there with my husband. It was very very hot day . We sat inside the cafe. Although ac was on it was not enough. The old style of air conditioning. Bring your own hand-held fan with you :) On the wall there is a huge , very beautiful picture of Istanbul. Minarets of the Blue Mosque and ferry's on the Bosporus. I really loved this picture. Peaceful Bosporus ! The picture made me to go to Istanbul. I ordered kumpir which is richer and much better than English jacket potato. It was very good . I can recommend. My husband ordered a gozleme with cheese. Was not looking good to me . My husband confirmed , it was not good at all. Location was good by the sea....

Local...Authentic

By kitty567 |

This is a great local place to feel Turkish atmosphere and try great food and desert. In the summer, there is outdoor seating to enjoy the bay. Not the kind of place that I would go out of my way for, but if in the area, worth a try.

Affordable Turkish Food by the Bay

By Nichole S |

This is one of the few places on Emmons Avenue or even in Sheepshead Bay where you can eat good quality food at an affordable price. The staff is friendly and the menu varied, with an especially impressive tea and desert selection. They do not serve alcohol.

Great place to just relax

By aylin p |

Nice place near the bay. Excellent just to hang out with friends and have desert, coffee or Turkish tea, or even watch a game on a big screen tv, however they do not have an extensive menu for food so don't come here to eat large, but it is a place more to unravel after you have already eaten. Nice designs near the tables add to its charm.

Rotting veg & old inedible meat & really greasy food.

By True_INNsight. |

We went here on the 7th of July to try ethnic food in Brooklyn, recommended by a friend. We ordered Kebab( Adana), Lahmacun ( flatbread with mince), Pide ( stuffed brea) with cheese and spinach. Our meals were not served at the same time . First they brought the Kebab really fast, which was highly unusual. This was not edible as it seemed as though it had been reheated because the vegetable were warm. The meat had gone hard. we mentioned this, we were still charged for it. The Pide with cheese and Spinach were so greasy, the oil was literally dripping, this is highly unusual. The vegetables seemed to have passed sell by sometime ago, old , tasteless and inedible. The desserts equally bad, the tea was very light we asked for a stronger one, we were charged for both. We had stomach upset after eating here. I would say it was very disappointing and worrying , Best avoid.
