This was one of the best sushi experiences I've had. The service was exceptional. Our server was very excited to tell us about the choices and quite knowledgeable as well. My girlfriend is allergic to refined sugar and so cannot eat many foods on the menu so they catered to us in order to accommodate her unique diet. The atmosphere was fun but not overwhelming, and afforded enough privacy for a conversation and wasn't too loud to hear. The food was delicious! I'm a big sushi fan and eat a lot on my travels, but I'm certainly not an expert. I really enjoyed my experience here!

Two of my friends who do not live in Seattle recommended this place. It is small and cozy, on a street of restaurants in West Seattle. They were right. I have not had better sushi than this. We selected the toku set meal. The chef chooses what is served, and he chose well. We had 5 courses of sushi plus 2 course of cooked fish. I'm not going to try to describe the food, some of which I've never had before. For example, tuna on a tempura coated shiso leaf (tuna on a snowshoe). The raw fish was cut perfectly; the cooked fish was cooked perfectly. We had a number of pots of kikucha green tea. My wife and daughter also had sakes appropriate to the meal and their tastes--ask the server for advice,

This restaurant aims high. With many tasting menus, not just one, the customer can hand over the culinary reins and let Mashiko’s chefs be your guide. We chose the “Sushi-ya” menu, an array of 9 carefully chosen selections. Probably because I have never been to Japan almost everything that arrived was new to me. An open mind, therefore, for average Americans, is a must. The flavors were deep and delicious but did not blow me away. Therefore, I give this restaurant 4 out of 5 stars. Usually a restaurant that takes such care in obtaining the very best ingredients, like this one, blows me away. Mashiko did not.

The kids gobbled down the tempura and miso. i agreed plus the best salad I've ever had in a Japanese restaurant.

We took a full chefs meal. This was an amazing experience! For 3 hours the chef kept bringing out dishes. Each unique, tasty and creative.

This is my favorite place for Sushi in Seattle...come to think of it, it's the best sushi I've ever had. I've been there three times and every time the food is out of this world. The last time the service was, well...really bad, which was a shock because the other two times the service was great.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Chef Sato is knowledgeable and evangelical about his food. If you are willing to open your mind and eat a few things you might not have had before, he will blow your mind with inventive, delicious, healthy, fare. We sat at the bar and he was generous with his time, knowledge, food, and sake. While a lot of focus is justifiably placed on his use of sustainable product, don't think you are doing penance or that the restaurant should be judged on a different scale - it is up there with anything I have ever had - which includes travel and many meals in Japan. Bravo!

Let's go and try Mr. Crust in ashok vihar best bakery in Delhi they have best bakey stuff likes cakes nd pastery, very good food at pocket friendly rate must try

Sushi done well, with imagination. The chef is a guide, not a dictator and the results are amazing. Small, which adds to the atmosphere, but makes reservations a good idea.

Can't say We were happy with the dinner ,the taste was not for us. A bit overpriced. Nice service and great waiter, but hey you can't please everyone. Different taste, I guess.

The extensive menu is a little overwhelming. There are multiple wonderful sounding options. Our server Steve provided excellent recommendations and was spot on with service. We had to wait a few minutes for a table and they provided free sake. Prosciutto wrapped scallops, trout and albacore toro sashimi and a special of poke style Hawaiian albacore topped with a poached egg were all outstanding. Extensive sake choices. Will definitely return

I don't know where to begin... it was the best dinner we have had all week! Tonight we made a reservation and was seated right way. We were so lucky to get seated in Gary's section. We ordered drinks and got the featured menu drink and when i tried it it was not to my liking. It didn't have the flavor I was looking for so i told Gary. He came back with a new beer and it was so much better! So we ordered dinner and I ordered a California roll and Gary looked at me and said "I can do better than that if you trust me!" Well I did and I went on a flavor adventure that I will never forget!!! He brought me things I would have never ordered and I can not thank him enough for opening my eyes to what is out there in sustainable items from the sea! Gary was funny, knowledgeable, fast and the best server we have ever had. The attention to their guests and how much they care really does show in every aspect of the dining experience. I will recommend everyone to your establishment and I will seek Gary out because I trust and know that he will lead me down a delicious path every time!!

Hajime is an excellent host and sushi chef and he has trained his staff well! We have tried all the well known sushi restaurants in Seattle and the surrounding area and nothing beats Mashiko! The albacore tuna is to die for along with everything else. Nice creative selection of rolls and excellent food from the kitchen. Excellent waitstaff, many long-term. Have been going here for 15 years!

This is a "full-menu restaurant that serves sushi and other Japanese food." The menu changes regularly so each time you come you can have something new. We had family with us who had been before so they helped as a guide for some Midwesterners who were not used to Japanese cuisine. For others not used to it, raw fish tastes wonderful and the assorted vegetables served with the fish are wonderfully prepared. The presentation is something like half of the eating. So, you almost want to admire the appearance before digging in. The table service is efficient and helpful. The "wine list" has a huge selection of Saki as well as Japanese and domestic beer. The restaurant specializes in "sustainable" seafood. So you don't need to worry whether you're eating the last surviving fish of some species. The head chef, Hajime, is a "name" chef in sushi and Japanese cooking.

Mashiko is the West Seattle restaurant we frequent the most. Great for date nights and amazing for out of town guests! The food is amazing and the service is always above and beyond. Chris was our server last week and he really was so kind. We adore Mashiko! Already looking forward to our next visit.

The owner is very determined to offer sustainable sushi; not an easy task. They offer the best sushi in Seattle for my money. The white king salmon sashimi is like butter melting on your tongue (in a good way). The service is always great, especially at the sushi bar. I recommend this place to anyone in Seattle and frequent it for special occasions.

This was a dinner to remember. Quality of fish is one thing but what really made it was chef Hajime. We told him what we liked and he took our menus away. He kept making until we said we were done. One of the best meals I've ever had... and I've had a lot! Would come back to seattle just to eat here again. Thank you Hajime! Your new Canadian Friend

I don't really even like sushi and I like the rolls here. My favorite are atomic tuna and red violin.

This is a traditional Japanese restaurant in West Seattle. The food and the service reminded me of when I was in Tokyo. The Yakisoba was an original style (not an American look a like). The price is a little higher that I would have expected, but the food and the ambiance make it a must for special occasions.

There are many reasons why you should try Mashiko: it's Seattle's first sustainable sushi bar, the fish is as fresh as it gets, they offer authentic Japanese food for the more brave, great selection of beers and sake, and if that doesn't do it for you - go in just to sit at the sushi bar and talk to Hajime - his knowledge of sushi is worth the visit! We've been here several times, but our favorite item off the menu is simply "Chef's Choice." You can trust the sushi chefs here to make over-the-top delicious, yet simple, rolls. If there's certain fish you don't like, be sure to mention it. If there's a roll that they make and you love, be sure to write it down, because they won't remember it the next day. Chef's choice is the best way to get the freshest ingredients and also try new flavors.

So, I'm going to first get the sushi review out of the way. I agree with everyone that the sushi at Mashiko is amazing. The fish is excellent quality. It's just as good if not better than Kisaku and Nishino. This is the only place where I've even heard of being able to get uni straight out of the shell. But, I think Mashiko really shines when you get the 5-course meal because you not only get a nigiri and a roll course, but you also get authentic Japanese appetizers and entrees. And, of course, it's fabulous. The chef, Hajime, is quirky, hilarious, and definitely a reason to sit at the bar. Service is a little slow because there are only two sushi chefs (including Hajime), but it's totally worth it.

I'm originally from Seattle but recently have moved to Honolulu, and even though there are some great sushi places here, I really miss and CRAVE Mashiko!!! The atmosphere is fun and quirky, but be patient as there is usually a wait to get a table, but worth it. When you come be ready to spend a while and enjoy a wonderful meal, it is worth the wait!!!!

Reservations available by calling after 4pm. A small, intimate space. Great service, great daily specials, and excellent Nabeyaki Udon. Our server was very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, and made great recommendations regarding menu and sake selections. The prices are more because the staff is paid salary instead of tips, FYI. We'll be back!

Japanese food is great here

We love going to Happy Hour at Mashiko's. We just get green tea and order pretty much every food item on the Happy Hour menu, all excellent and reasonably priced. Easy parking in back.

At the end of a very special trip to the PNW, we had one last night in Seattle. Our daughter wanted us to experience something special via a sushi restaurant in West Seattle. "Yes, dear I'm sure it will be lovely"...we've been to Nakazawa in NY, (Jiro's apprentice) so we are not expecting much. We arrive and are immediately kicked in the teeth, BAM! Our incredibly savy server, Gary knocks my sox off when he offers an alternative to my favorite saké, which proves an excellent substitute. He proceeds to highlight the sustainability aspect of the restaurant, which everyone agrees is important. That said, we ordered a number of special dishes and challenged him with a few more. When he returned from the kitchen, the chef came with him, wondering "who is ordering this food, I want to know? The balance of the evening was a love-in with exceptional food and drink. Mashiko is not a place to be missed, whether you live in Seattle or are a just a visitor!

I have been lucky enough to visit some very fine Japanese restaurants in this country and abroad and never have I had the calibre of meal that was made for us by the hard working chefs at Mashiko. I admit I have not yet been to Japan but I think I came pretty close last night at Mashiko. Maybe I am in the right place in my life to understand the magic of sake because I learned so much while I became nicely drunk on the best sakes I have ever been offered. The fish and all other ingredients are top notch and presentation is nonpareil. Mashiko knows their stuff ! I cannot wait to go return to this cozy little spot. Thank You, Mashiko

There is no better sushi in Seattle.

Best in town. Hajime rules.

The best sushi in Seattle.

I have never had a bad experience at Mashiko. I have been going there since it first opened. Be prepared to make reservations, it is small but well worth it!

Eleventy dru-stars. Gorgeous organic miso soup, terrific kumamotos on the half shell, halibut cooked with enoki and other slashed up veggies in a beautifully balanced sauce, cod & asparagus nigiri, and matcha creme brulee with a red bean curd at its base. Fully sustainable sushi bar so guilt free. Just go: There is No Disappoint Here. Bonus 1: great armosphere, including beautiful salt water aquarium full of large, mature soft corals and antennatwiddly shrimp undulating in the currents... ask for this table if you're on a date. Bonus 2: Visa, MasterCard, and washing dishes are acceptable methods of payment - it says so right on the menu.

Our server asked questions about other Japanese dishes we'd had and enjoyed so he could gauge our tastes and then communicated that to the chef. She then prepared dishes that were both challenging and exquisite. We were told that it was the new chef's first night solo, but we would have never have guessed. Bravo. Mashiko is on my list of new favorite Seattle restaurants.

Tough to get in, but the menu is fun, the fish is perfect, the emphasis on sustainability. Shiro's has nothing on this place. If you know good sushi then you'll see that these prices are reasonable.

While I imagine most people who eat regularly at quality Japanese restaurants expect pretty high prices and somewhat smaller portions (it's the preparation, subtle tastes and presentation you come for) our recent visit to Mashiko left me a bit underwhelmed. Had a four-person birthday dinner at this restaurant we used to frequent regularly and while the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food was up to par for sure, the portion sizes and cost of each item was a little bit off what I was used to for this place. Sustainable and perfectly fresh and prepared seafood isn't going to be cheap but it still needs to satisfy on several levels and having to go out to eat after going out to eat and spending a lot of money hardly makes sense for most people. So we will be back at Mashiko some day but after our experience yesterday we won't be rushing back.

We like great Japanese food and a lot of it. Therefore the recent meal with our daughter visiting was omakase. Pleased with the quality and without the requirement of advance booking for omakase like other restaurants, we tried to go back again, but so far not successful without a reservation. They are too popular and always busy and we do not have the time for long waits.

Off the beaten path... all the way over in West Seattle. Only sustainable sushi served at this Seattle sushi spot. House cured ikura (salmon roe) and many unusual offerings that the chef/owner selects from local fishing boats. By far the best sushi option in Seattle (even better than Shiro's).

In Seattle celebrating an anniversary, we decided to try out Mashiko based on TripAdvisor reviews. We love fresh and well prepared sushi - Mashiko did not disappoint. We were fortunate enough to sit at the Sushi bar and have all of our meal prepared by the owner, Hajime. We ordered the chef's tasting menu - words can't describe how unique and tasty the variety of raw and cooked fish that was delivered. Hajime educated us on the origins and sourcing of all the sustainable ingredients used to prepare our dishes. I am an "adventurous" eater and was excited to try out some fish that I've never had before. We also did a pairing of Saki with each of the dishes. Ultimately, this was the best sushi experience I've ever had. We will definitely come to Mashiko the next time we are in Seattle. Thank you to Hajime for such a wonderful meal and continuing to prepare sushi using sustainable species.

Oh Please.. This is the worst Sushi I've ever had, and THEE WORST SERVICE! My personal Experience was frustrating to say the least. I make sushi and I would say I am a sushi expert, but the point is, OK, yes, it's popular, but only God knows why. The service is slow, the servers were rude and snooty. I would go to Sushiland anytime over this place.

Seattle has several good sushi opportunities. My favorite is Mashiko's on California in west Seattle. I've been eating here since 2008, when the former owner Hajame taught me how to eat sushi while I watched him make it! Mariah, his co-chef and he made me sushi and all sort of other new things. Overtime I just stopped looking at the menus and let them decide what's for dinner! This much is clear, these people care deeply about the ocean and the fish. They went sustainable a few years ago and I think the food actually improved! The feeling in the place has always been quite high chi. The food always tastes best sitting at the bar - takeout is way better than any other sushi option I know. A while ago some employees bought the place from Hajemi, and the food took another step in a good direction. IMO Life to me is about evolution - Mashiko has kept evolving for the 12+years I've been happily eating there! I intend to continue through the Covid times. Mariah, Allison & George... keep it going - I"ll be back again soon!

The food at Mashiko is amazing. Everyone else already said everything about the food so there isn't much to add. It really is what everyone says. What I do want to mention is that the seating is a bit cramped and it is a bit noisy, so we usually order the food as take-away. When you order take-away, there is a "box fee" automatically added (10%). They don't leave you the bill itself so you end up getting only the credit slip with a place to fill in the tip. If you give a tip, realize that it is in addition to the box fee.

A great experience. A grand selection of Sake. The sushi is fresh and guaranteed to follow sustainability standards. The management is unconventional in that they have a woman as sushi chef. I love it.

the best sushi I've had in the seattle area.

I was in Seattle for work on my birthday, and Mashiko turned what otherwise would have been a very blah pandemic bday into something incredibly special and memorable. They put together a bespoke to-go tasting feast complete with detailed descriptions and instructions for my husband and I to eat at our hotel. Love this restaurants creativity, personal touches, uniqueness and dedication to sustainability. We will definitely return every time we visit Seattle. Thank you, Mashiko!

One of the most delicious and enjoyable dinners EVER. Our waiter was knowledgeable and patient, and guided us well. We ordered one of the full dinners for two, and wow, the hits just kept on coming! Highly recommend. And do make reservations, it's a small room - but a great atmosphere.

Great sushi and non sushi food for the non believers. Great service and a fun evening. Expensive and worth it if you are an sushi snob. A fun place for special occasions. You will want to make reservation. They are very popular.

You'll probably need a reservation. It's a small romantic sushi place, with very fun, upscale, high quality sushi. I love this place!

Best sushi in town

The sushi chefs were engaging and informative. I ate delicious, sustainable and inventive sushi in a kitchsy, personality-filled, neighborhood restaurant. If I'm in Seattle again, I will make it a point to eat at Mashiko!

Enjoyed the sushi but they will not have all of the options you are used to since they serve only sustainable fish.

Absolutely amazing taste treat was the tuna tartare with poached edd. Mashiko's makes fabulous 100% SUTANALBE fish delightes. Make sure to order the Tuna on Snowshoe's too. How many sushi restaurnats really do make their own Ikura and Tamago too? Always an enjoyable dinner is to be had here. Now if I could only talk my hubby into eating here 3 or 4 times a week! ;-)

I love that Mashiko only serves sustainable sushi! The sushi is delicious - there's plenty of fish, not too much rice. I've done the Omakase (chef's choice) where they keep bringing you small courses until you tell them to stop. It's not cheap, but it's an incredible experience. Must be willing to try new and interesting foods!

The food, service, and setting were all excellent. We shared a variety of nigiri, sashimi, and rolls. Everything was outstanding. We would definitely visit again.

My best friend and I decided to meet up in west Seattle, both of us from out of town. I had read about the sushi chefs at Mashiko and was intrigued by them, their philosophy and unapologetic attitude about following their truth. We sat at the bar and were treated to a culinary experience. The chef/ owner Hajime, selected what to serve us after quickly sizing us up as average aficionados of sushi. In other words, we've eaten a fair amount of sushi but never really been guided through it. Every dish came with a lesson. Every question we asked was answered thoughtfully and without being condensing. By the end of our multi course meal we were given homework and goals. We will learn about sake, we will try fish eggs and he fully expects us to return as we progress in our honing of our taste buds. This is going down as one of my favorite dining experiences and I absolutely will make many special trips to return.

Not a traditional sushi restaurant but if your goal is sustainability then you’ve come to right place. There is no chu toro or king mackerel but they are very creative in use of alternative fish. I loved the toro tataki and salmon katsu roll. I also recommend trying the rainbow trout.

I ate the chicken yakitori and it came on 3 small skewers with some tasteless cabbage and some red peppers and the chicken tasted really good but nothing special with what was on the plate! My friend ordered a California roll which was fresh but for $10 US it was overpriced and for the price tasted like any other California roll I ever ordered for much cheaper price. Then we ordered a roll that had tempura on top and it was fresh but completely tasteless. The third roll had an outer batter of coconut where this outer skin was deep fried but the coconut was actually burnt and the entire roll tasted burnt! We had numerous people in west Seattle recommend this restaurant but this experience was deeply disappointing and I will never go back considering the prices combined with food that is anything but special!

Not your typical sushi restaurant. For starters, the fish is sustainably caught. Hint: sit at the bar, point to the blackboard of what's fresh and trust the chef(s). You can't go wrong.

As a person that doesn't like sushi, I loved this place. I normally only like tuna, everything else is just too fishy for me, but everything we had was fresh and delicious. The server Brian was excellent. He suggested the seared tuna with garlic, and some sort of salmon poke. The salmon, which normally not my favorite sushi to eat, was delicious here!! Would definitely be back!! Just gotta get there early, because the place gets full quick!!!

This is more of a café serving Japanese food rather than what I would have considered to be a traditional Japanese restaurant. The atmosphere is very lively, the menu extensive and the service friendly and prompt. It's super popular, so reservations are a good idea. They offer two Japanese inspired draft beers from nearby Elliott Bay Brewing, which is cool.

From Santa Barbara ca. Took our 4 and 6 yr olds. Food was excellent, sake was smooth staff was super nice, good atmosphere- enjoy!!

In West Seattle, this is THE place for Japanese food. Three of us ate dinner here, on our last night in Seattle, and left sated and satisfied. Everything placed before us was fresh and sumptuous. Thank you for an absolutely wonderful dining experience! The restaurant is small -- and popular -- so it's best to make a reservation.

I did the Omakase with two friends and we had a fantastic experience. We had about 9 courses with several really fantastic dishes. The service was very friendly and knowledgable and our server did a nice job pairing sakes with our courses. Favorites of the evening were the White Salmon and White Toro sushi and the Rock Fish Poké. The fish was obviously extremely fresh and had a wonderful taste and texture. Yum. Least inspiring course was a very simple shrimp salad. Most challenging dish of the evening was a tuna (very nice tuna) on rice with Natto, shrimp sauce, a coddled egg and freshly sprouted fish eggs (sort of like whitebait). This was served at room temperature and was a more than a wee bit overpowering for us. One of the great things about many of the dishes served were the sauces on them. Lots of Ponzu and similar juices incorporated into very fresh tasting sauces. Total for food, beverages (4 sakes, 1 wine) and dessert was $275 for 3 of us.

Reserved the Honkaku Omakase menu ahead of time and had a fantastic dinner. Service was very good. Abundant variety of fish that we don't normally eat. The sushi chef was friendly and very knowledgeable. The meal ended up costing us (2 persons) a total of ~ $300 with a drink each. The restaurant features sustainable and seasonable fish.

Very disappointing. The tempura was soggy and our sushi was expensive and unremarkable. I won't be dining there again.

They have fine print saying they add a 18% fee that goes to front of house but they also expect a tip (20% default). They hide this in the actual checkout process, e-mail receipt, and paper receipt (which all show different numbers) but the final amount doesn’t show up until your credit card statement lands. Check your credit card bill and you will find you paid a 38% tip. Not cool Mashiko, not cool at all.

We were looking for dinner and discovered sushi at Mashiko. Terrific food and nice staff. Highly recommend!

A pretty small place so expect to wait a bit but well worth the wait. The sushi is just so fresh! Be sure to sit at the sushi bar, best seats in the house!

The food at Manoush is amazing ,great service and delicious real Persian meal. We ordered mix grill it was different type of kebabs in a big plate with rice, love it.

My husband and I went to Mashiko with a friend who loves sushi but who had stopped eating it because of the problems with depletion of fisheries. You can eat shshi at Mashiko without guilt because the chef is scrupulous about only using sustainable products. And it's great sushi, too. The three of us had the chef's choice "umi" menu (all uncooked fish) and loved it.

We went as a group of 4 (2 couples) and did two of the prix-fix menus Nami and Umi. This was an amazing feast. The chef was amazing and made it work for the four of us. Everything we tried was interesting. The sashimi and nigori were definitely the highlight with delicious, fresh, firm fish that was AMAZING. We tried some things we never would have ordered on our own and this made it a true culinary experience. I highly recommend. We would have done the full chef's choice, but hadn't made reservations for this specific seating. Reservations are highly recommended. This is a small place that seemed quite popular.

The word "Sustainable" has become somewhat watered down from all the green washing these days, so it can be hard to find a place that actually lives and breathes sustainability. This place lives up to its sustainable hype, and then some. My wife and I ordered a 2 person chefs choice, and learned as much as we ate! Every type of fish had a story and a good reason for being used. The meal was phenomenal, and chef Hajime and our waiter were greats host during our meal. We left satiated and educated. We will be returning in the future. I would highly recommend getting a seat at the Sushi bar and ordering one of the chef's choice meals.

I personally think this place is overpriced and overrated. Hit and miss on service. The food is good, but not worth the hassle.

I was taken to Mashiko by a wonderful family member in a joint birthday dinner for me my son-in-law and my daughter. This was by no means a typical Japanese restaurant; the chef had his own creative twist on every item we ate. We had a three hour, approximately 10 course, sushi experience, with a Chef's Choice "Honkaku". I thought I knew sushi but this was a delightful and novel experience. Every dish was served individually with a description by the wait staff. The toppers for me were the prosciutto wrapped seared scallops with flying fish roe, the spicy Hawaiian ahi poke, and the sea snail/whelk. We finished the meal with Jasmine Crème Brulee, which was to die for. The owner is committed to sustainable fishing, which was a bonus to an amazing experience.

Love the food - very good quality at a reasonable price. Sit at the bar and talk to the owner/chef. Very interesting person!

We had made plans to try different Japanese restaurant(s) in Seattle area for our recent visit. We always enjoy fresh seafood & new approach with a twist of the classic technics, our chef had made this visit quite rewarding. We decided to try out two different omakase menu among 4 of us. Most of the dishes consisted of local catch & seasonal vegetable.

Absolutely love this place. Great food and service. Discover something new each visit. This visit it was “Fish Collar. While technically not sushi this baked fish dish was exciting. One order was great for four people.

I recently relocated to Seattle/Vashon Island from the Twin Cities, MN, and my super-fabulous boyfriend surprised me for Mother's Day by taking me to Mashiko's. He had mentioned that it's his favorite restaurant in all of Seattle ~ a little gem that is the city's first fully sustainable sushi bar. A small, intimate atmosphere and friendly wait staff made us feel welcome coming in from the chilly drizzle outside. Seated at a little table for two, our waiter got our orders in right away, which was great considering the busy holiday and that the place was packed. While we waited, we listened to the hum of happy conversation from the other diners around us, laughed at the banter between the sushi chefs and the people ringside at the sushi bar, and checked out the interesting array of Japanese artwork that graces the walls. Our first course arrived and the real fun began ~ the Sunomono Salad was light and refreshing and paired nicely with the absolutely to-die-for Black Cod Kama Kasuzuke. What came next was nothing short of a sushi revelation for a gal who's had some pretty damn good sushi in Northern Cali's Bay Area. We ordered a wonderful assortment of rolls: California, Spider, Snowflake, and Red Violin. I'd never had the Snowflake (namagi, avocado, and tempura bay shrimp, coconut-fried and served warm) or the Red Violin (tuna, avocado, cilantro, and spicy garlic sauce) and was rendered speechless (unless helpless whimpers of satisfaction count as speech). The complexity and crunchiness of the Snowflake was love at first mouthful, and the exquisite simplicity of the Red Violin's tuna and cilantro was a virtual culinary moment. Just when I thought I couldn't love my boyfriend more, he went and took me to Mashiko's ~ thanks, baby!

Came in for a quick mean and they are on the spot. They are great on providing super service and a great meal. Its a pleasure to eat with a professional crew. If you are in West Seattle and got the Sushi urge, you should make a reservation because they do get busy here and a lot of people know that.

Okay service. Excellent sushi and music.

Really good sushi - and all sustainably caught which is nice to know. They are very good and helping you learn what this means as well. Lots of new and differnent rolls that what you would normally find. Make sure you make a reservation as it's not a big place.

Went here with my partner, brother and sister in law while visiting Seattle. They live in the area. We decided to do the chef's choice tasting menu for two. The chef just did all four of us as a group. There were like 5 courses I think. Just really nice quality sushi. I honestly could not have been happier. My sis in law if from Tokyo, and she loves it. Try it!!!! Might get a reservation though….

We visited Mashiko while on a visit from out of town and the sushi was excellent. What really set the place apart was the sustainable way they operate. For example, they do not serve eel, but instead serve a catfish that is just as fresh and delicious. The chef can prepare a meal for you or you can order off the menu and either way you will not be disappointed. For a particularly flashy dish, order the Pepe roll.

So. I took this amount of time to want to review the restaurant. Not because it needed it, but because I wasn't ready to let this leave my head and be stuck on a review. I wanted this memory to last a lifetime. Now, please understand we are from Edmonton, land locked in Alberta. We don't get the freshness of the ocean, however we have a tonne of great chefs doing their best. Back to Seattle, where we took a scenic drive up a white arched bridge and ended up near a strip of restaurants and shops, not unlike the ones you'd see in your home town. The second we walked through the door, that was gone. We were greeted instantly, seated not shortly after and had our host tell us he fought for the position, as he was as much a fan of fish as we were. Our server then explained the menu and after a foible of my own, basically asking for the chefs table serving without notice, I corrected myself and the server had planned with the chef how our meal would go. We chose what we wanted (even forgetting one critical piece which will keep a special place in our hearts - more on that later) and within an amazing amount of time for how full the restaurant was we had our first pieces in front of us. Before that, though, the beverages. We ordered a toasted rice tea. Unrelenting and smooth, unlike anything we've had before. I had a Jasmine Beer from the brewery across the street, only brewed for Mashiko. I am 6' and 225 lbs. After the 1st sip of that beer, I was a soaked-by-tears napkin of a man. I can't describe it past an experience that I am certain I won't get for quite some time. Every sip was transubstantiative. Transcendant. Onto the fish dish, as you wish: There was rainbow trout. Like butter in the wind. There was salmon. As if my mouth was a ring waiting for it's rock, this was a masterpiece of fish jewellery. There was roe that exploded like the sea, rolling tide through my mouth. Now, as we had made our selections earlier, we had forgotten to order the Tuna on a snow-shoe. Being familiar with snow and shoes, we were saddend to have forgotten it. Low and behold, our server had placed a couple extra pieces on our order (at our request, of course) and this was one of them. We burst into giggle tears. If I could scream it any louder, I would. If my stomach could have fit the rest of the restaurant in it, I would. As I write this review, I seem to recall reviewing it before. Oh well. It was that important.

We rented a house in W Seattle. Flight was late, arriving Friday night, decided to order take-out. We ordered the most expensive meal on the menu: Mashiko Sashimi Assortment for $65. We ourselves live in one of the most expensive if not the most expensive metro area in the USA. We go to sushi restaurants regularly and all over the country. This Sashimi meal was the worst $ to fish ratio I have experienced. Yes, I have had more expensive sushi in Tokyo and Kyoto, but those places were at a different level than Mashiko. In writing this review, I recognized perhaps I should have studied the menu ultra-carefully. On their menu is another dish, fresh Nigiri of the day. 7 pieces for $32. Only reason this is 3 star rather than 2? What little fish there was, was good quality.

I've been to Mashiko twice and both times the food was delicious. We ordered a wide variety of sushi dishes, and shared with each other. Everything was fresh and tasty ... I think, actually, it is a blend of food that is art and art that is eaten. The decor is cozy, but not close, and peaceful, not noisy as some places are. It was a wonderful evening.

Great service, nice ambiance, but the quality of the fish was poor, the presentation and flavor was like the sushi and sashimi you get from the supermarket. The rice wasn’t fresh, the rolls badly cut, the fish was dry, opaque, old, like coming from a fridge. The sashimi was better than the sushi, the spring rolls were ok, the salmon skin roll tasted burnt. We were happy to see how busy they were with the take away orders. I felt I was having take away but eating it at the restaurant. We ate there a couple of years ago and it was fantastic, from the presentation, cut of the fish and variety of the fish. Covid impacts the restaurant business but if you are ready to open for indoor eating you need to be able to offer the high quality food you are famous for.

The food is fabulous! Fresh, inventive and fun. Everyone that tries it is addicted!

Just go and eat the specials if you don't want to look at the menu. We ordered the entire special menu and left feeling blessed to have come upon a restaurant with ethics, morals, professional and respectful treatment!! Yes, it is THIS good. Don't miss the Coconut Ice Cream w/fruit - crazy good and healing too!!!!

This is legitimately the best sushi within a several mile radius, which is a great distance at dinnertime in West Seattle due to the bridge being closed. So, it's here or make the trek to downtown Seattle if you want to eat good fish. And I want to love this place, so badly. I really do. But the insufferable arrogance, the snide pride, and the pathetically high-falutin attitude about literally everything is straight-up tragic. Mashiko, please come back to earth. Please ditch the britches that don't fit. Please JUST BE NICE to your customers. It's not that hard!!! I swear, it's actually easier if you take a breath and begin with the assumption that you might not know everything there is to know about everything, which in your case is, I assume, Japanese culture, serving Japanese food, and sustainable fisheries in the Pacific and PNW. Some of your customers DO actually get it, and don't love being treated like toddlers. "Consistently condescending" is how I'd sum this place up if asked to do so in two words. And it's not like they make an effort to learn faces or names. I've eaten here several times in a week, I've been here dozens of times in a year, I've spent thousands over the past 5. I don't want to be known here, but it's very telling that they ain't tryin to know me, either. Mashiko, I hate to break it to you, but you ain't all that! At least, not if we consider Seattle to include anything outside of WEST Seattle. Big fish small pond much? It's exhausting. Now, I get it. This place is easy to love if you love to gush (hear the voice of the 35yo west seattle new-mom climbing out of her double parked land rover to grab a quick bite for kids and nanny so she can run down to canliss) "Ooh it's like all SUSTAINABLE, they're so quirky with their 5:03pm thing, and just TRY to get a table without a res!" Don't make me do the voice of the 46yo dude in a patagonia puffy having an overly loud biz dinner "OH IS THIS SAKE ORGANIC?" Jeebus help this neighborhood.

We waited a bit for our reserved table at this small restaurant in a lovely neighborhood - west Seattle. Waitress was knowledgeable and helped with our one friend without sushi experience!! We let the chef select our dishes and they were very good. All the fish was extremely fresh and that made it terrific. Our one comment days afterwards was that none of the rolls were "exceptional" either in presentation or taste. Guess we're spoiled New Yorkers who like a "wow" presentation. I would suggest letting them know your preferences and maybe that would have upped the ante. Interestingly, none of the chefs were Japanese and most were women. That certainly changed things up and we enjoyed the experience and lovely service. Even gave our novice sushi eater his own "training" wheels to handle the chopsticks.

Good sushi. Good service.

My favorite sushi in Seattle! I even like their cooked dishes which usually I never pay attention too. The best part is that I'm always trying new things and don;t have to worry about not being sustainable.

My daughter lives in Seattle, and couldn't wait to take me to Mashiko. She is a regular there, and loves to sit at the sushi bar and learn about sustainable sushi from Hajime. After just one visit, I can see why she loves this place so much. The food is simply exquisite -- simple, wonderful flavors, perfect presentation, a friendly staff who were not just quick to answer our questions, but eager to inform us. Delightful.

A surprise birthday dinner exceeded expectations. We ordered the Sushi-ya, chef's choice for 2 and each selection was fantastic. We liked how it started with light fish, rianbow trout, in a light marinate then increased in flavors and intensities. I appreciated the lack of wasabi and soy sauce unless it was integral to the dish. The final main dish included black cod, skip jack and scallop. The owner/chef: Hajime Sato recommended Sake pairings that worked very well. His passion and knowledge and gentle guidance on menu decisions was appreciated. We eat sushi often and have already considered when we might return...with friends.

top three for sushi

Had a 6 course tasting menu and it was amazing. Won’t be able to eat cheap sushi 🍣 for a long time as this was so amazing and had a good sake recommendation from the server. Everything was next level delicious! X

We went here as a family celebration, Mom Dad, 2 year old and Aunt and Uncle. We were excited to for the sustainable exciting sushi and Mashiko didn't disappoint. From the miso soup to the jasmine Creme Brulee dessert everything was excellent. We ordered the Umi Omakase for 4 and told them we were on the adventurous side. There were several items that most of our party hadn't tried, monk fish liver, black cod and trout sashimi, which was fun, and the things we had tried, such as albacore tuna and mackerel, were done in such a fresh and interesting way that they were really enjoyed as well. Also they were very accommodating with a nut allergy in the party. Highly recommended and we can't wait to go back.

I used to go to Mashiko's when I lived in Seattle several years ago and I was so pleasantly surprised to find that the seafood (sushi and sashimi) is sustainable. We were there in early December and the food was delicious. Also, they provided excellent information on the many varieties of sake available. We tried 2 different kinds. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The restaurant is on the smallish side, but good things come in small packages. The sushi was outstanding! We had the Toku course for two and the selection, preparation and taste were all to our liking. No complaints at all.

Great sushi, great staff, sustainable fish, best web address, not a tourist destination.

My boyfriend and I are both in the food industry and we have eaten at many amazing places around the country. Mashiko is far and away the best place we have ever eaten. If you can, get the market omakase menu; course upon course of insane food. Pair it with the sakes; you won't be disappointed. We had Garrett as our server/sake expert, and he was amazingly talented, unpretentious, and all around an amazing guy. At the end of our 17 course dinner, the chef came out and poured us each a glass of sake. Not only is he incredibly talented, but chef Sato was so humble and thankful you would have thought we did him a favor by coming in. In reality,it was he who did us the favor or making such an incredible menu. We live in arizona, but as soon as we're back in Seattle we will be back to Mashiko. Thank you to the incredible chef and service team at this amazing restaurant. We will absolutely be back.

First and best meal on my July trip to Seattle. My mom and I sat at the sushi bar. Chef/owner Mashiko Otaku recommended we experience the omakase. What a wonderful, magical experience. After a quick assessment of our likes/dislikes, he perfectly crafted small plates tailored to our preferences. Each bite and chew unleashed new flavors and textures. The sake poached oysters blew us away. We also tasted rainbow trout sashimi, geoduck sautéed with mushroom, and a poke seaweed salad that still has me craving seaweed a week later. We left gloriously satiated and felt we experienced something that was priceless. Mashiko is a master at his craft and at understanding his customer. Let him spoil you.

I have been here quite a few times over the past years and it's always a celebration. Whether I sit at the sushi bar and order directly from the sushi chefs or sit at a table and get waited on, it's fun, fresh and tasty. I always order from the fresh/in season sheet and when I'm at a table, I also get ohitashi. Ask for sake pairings/recommendations. The staff is always outgoing and friendly.

The place is small, I'd suggest reservations but give a try if your in the area. The sushi is just great. There are other things on the menu and they are good but it's all about the seafood. Wait staff are very good and very knowledge about all the item on the menu so you can order with confidence. Great place for date night, friends night out or impressing visiting family.

In the midst of Alaska Junction ("the Junction") in West Seattle, is this treasure. Hajime is a young, brilliant sushi chef who operates the funkiest, funnest, tastiest sushi restaurant in Seattle. It's got an easy-going vibe, good music and, before or after, you can wander around the Junction, which has lots of little shops. Plenty of mentions in the reviews here about the food, my point is that sushi doesn't have to be intimidating, and Hajime will ensure that you enjoy yourself.

The food is excellent and the atmosphere is just what you want in a Japanese restaurant.

A very unassuming location that you might just past by. One of the best sushi restaurants this side of Tokyo. Get reservations to ensure you're not disappointed and enjoy.

Where else can you find top-quality sushi that is thoughtfully chosen for the day's menu based upon its availability in the natural environment? Chef Hajime selects ingredients that are not over-fished or endangered, not because they are inexpensive compared to last week. The service is very good and the webcam is a fun gimmick. Try the omokase - chef's choice - a two to three hour, exotic market-rate culinary tour. You'll be amazed.

... and the best nabekyaki udon I've ever had. A bit pricey. But it is worth it for a splurge.

And I'm not kidding. I may never look at sushi in my hometown the same because this roll was amazing! The sushi was so fresh and flavorful that my husband and I found ourselves keeping track of how many pieces the other had eaten. I cannot speak on the service because we took our rolls to go, but if you are anywhere near West Seattle and enjoy sushi you will love Mashiko.

Most extensive sushi menu I've seen! Several vegetarian options, including a cajun-spiced roll with tomato that's my favorite. We take sushi lovers here. Be ready for a wait - better, get there and put your cell phone # on a list while you stroll California Ave., or play with their trivia books and Magic 8 ball.

Sustainable such! Brilliant! Environmentally good! We asked the waiter to make our menu- everything was absolutely delicious! Try the Tuna on Snow Shoe. And all the sake.

The only sustainable sushi in Seattle. Awesome, fresh, local, in-house made everything, house-cured ikura. Amazing sake list. No lunch. Reservations required. It's small, wonderful, unique, and of the highest standards of ecology and gastronomy

Local sushi restaurant with a touch of attitude. Mashiko's is one of my favorite sushi places and we have quite a selection living in the Northwest! The menu has a wide array of items both traditional Japanese and some Americanized versions. I recommend the Tuna on a Snowflake as well as teh daily Poke. I crave it! My stomach is starting to growl as I write this. They also have a nice Saki menu. The service is great and who doesn't love it when they remember your name or the last thing you ordered when you came in? We take clients here, family, friends and I also go here as a treat just for myself. Make a reservation, they are always busy.

Really good sushi
Absolutely the best sushi in Seattle. Period.
And it just happens to be in my neighborhood! I have been there a few times, most recently the other night with my husband. I actually CRAVED Mashiko and had no problem waiting 30 minutes for my table (one of the shorter waits I have ever had there--make reservations if you aren't patient!) Hajime has made sure all the fish on the menu is sustainable--to the Monterey Bay Aquarium "Seafood Watch" standards. Bravo! Most recently, we had the Sushi and Sashimi Serendipity, and it was awesome. We didn't know what we were getting, at all. And I can be a cautious eater. We were so impressed! It was so awesome having things I might not have ordered for myself, and LOVING them. Can't wait to go back!
