More upscale diner

By BirdWord58 |

Very good food and much nicer than expected for a “diner.” Clean comfortable atmosphere and the food was good. Offer fruit as a side instead of potatoes if you prefer, which was very nice. I had eggs, fruit and sourdough toast. Coffee was excellent and they kept it coming. My companion had eggs and bacon with wheat toast.

Food and service vary widely

By Cathy S |

Was staying at the Hilton Union Square for a conference and ate here 3 times in 2 days. First visit on a Saturday night was surprisingly quiet. Asked the server what she recommended (Philly steak) and was not disappointed. Service and food were amazing and prices are reasonable here. Returned for Monday breakfast and the place was packed. Service took a bit of a dip but that was to be expected during a rush period. Was pleasantly surprised that the breakfast food (I had the pumpkin pancakes) was also top notch. Returned Monday night and had a below average experience: restaurant was not busy but we had a hard time getting the attention of our server, who could be seen socializing with other staff. Didn’t get a drink refill and had to start walking out before someone brought our bill. The food was also average and nothing to write home about. In conclusion, this restaurant is a mixed bag. Some amazing staff and food and some below average.

Mostly For Late Nighters

By Zoom_Gotti |

The strength of this place, if there is any, is the 24/7 aspect of the operation. The menu is varied with pastas, apps, sandwiches etc, but nothing, I would say, prepared with distinction. The staff seemed conscientious but often too harried for proper service. So if it's before 10PM, maybe search elsewhere. But once it gets later, or if you're a night prowler looking for eats without the drab bar atmosphere, maybe try this spot. But make sure you can digest the starch that is offered.

Great Diner Right Next Door to The King George Hotel

By Michael W |

Mason Diner is located on Mason Street (mmm I wonder if that's how it got its name?) between Geary and O'Farrell. We were staying at the King George Hotel which is right next door. We went here early in the morning for a breakfast meal. This is another restaurant where you wait to be seated. We were escorted to a table and selected items from the menu including Eggs Bacon Toast and Coffees. You can select the type of bread you want with your toast and when the meals arrived they had some kind of small Potato's on them which were tasty. The meals arrived quite quickly but were warm and very nice. I am a coffee lover and have to say the coffee which can be topped up for free was really nice. I had several top ups. When we were finished and got our bill we discovered the meals were quite reasonably priced. We returned here several times and sometimes had sandwiches which were quite good. Do not want to spoil it for other diners but they get a little carried away with the enormous qty of French Fries they serve with Sandwiches.

Top spot for good tucker!!

By Rob L |

This nice and noisy diner in Mason Street is just a super place to eat and we did a few times. The food is fresh and the staff very chatty and friendly.

Good for breakfast

By LiamBateman |

Had a good breakfast here. Tasty and good portions but a bit more modern than some of the more traditional diners near by. The pinecrest diner is on the corner and there is always a queue. If you can’t be bothered to wait them Mason Diner is equally as good.

American Breakfast Diner

By Larry L |

Found this place after walking around JW Marriot. It was crowded for a Monday morning. Servings was within expectations and coffee was good. Service was good too. Ordered from the table

True true good

By Stefania P |

We just had breakfast in this beautiful and cozy place near the hotel where we will recommend for two days; a special mention to the very kind and efficient Alehandra! We will return

Good food, miserable hostess

By LucieLou1982 |

Came in for breakfast, the hostess didn't even smile and took us to our table. I was shocked to see her constantly on her phone, ignoring customers that were leaving, not saying thank you/good bye. When not on her phone, she stood there with her arms folded, chewing gum, miserable face expression. The only time she would smile is when one of the waiters made eye contact with her. The food was good though and our waiter Roberto was excellent.

Worth a trip to San Francisco just to eat breakfast here

By cleflar |

On the first morning of our four day conference at the Hilton, we stepped out to find breakfast so we wouldn't have to eat at the vastly overpriced coffee shop. Half a block out, we spotted a sign saying 'Diner' and saw a line waiting to get inside. That sure implied a good breakfast spot! Luckily there were two spots at the counter so we didn't have to wait. You should always eat at the counter at a diner so you can get the full experience and watch the cooks, always fun to do. Jackpot! We sat down and the server drops two cups of amazingly good coffee in front of us without asking. A five page breakfast menu with all the right things. Reasonably priced and OMG so good. We ended up each having two mimosas with the breakfast. She had the billion dollar bacon, I had eggs, hash browns, sour dough toast (excellent). It was really really good. It was so good that I went there for breakfast four days in a row. I was even willing to get up at 5:30 to eat before I had to catch my early train. Arriving by 7 each morning, there was no waiting at all. By the third day they recognized me and put coffee and orange juice on the counter as I opened the door. Speaking of orange juice, get it. Fresh squeezed, as in they squeeze it while you watch from the counter. It was so good it gave me flashbacks to my childhood.

Great diner and breakfast joint in downtown San Francisco!

By steve s |

Great diner in downtown San Francisco and a retro feel and well priced with great service and smoked salmon Benedict with hash browns delicious!

Daily breakfast

By Natpail |

Very good breakfast food. Service is very efficient and nice. Large choice of plates. We came here every day during our stay as it was good and just near our hotel.

Pleasant Surprise

By offandabout |

Ducked in here to eat before a show, simply based on convenience of location. It was pretty empty, so I was a bit hesitant. Being in a hurry, we decided to risk it. We were pleasantly surprised! Had a tasty Angus burger, which I definitely recommend. My son loved his grilled cheese as well. Both came with a big pile of fries (also delicious). Food came out quickly; service was efficient. Had to pass on a glass of wine, but I could see the pours were generous. All in all, a great choice.

Good breakfast and lunch

By Luis M |

Visites this place twice and the food was good. For breakfast it was full but I was solo and got a place at the bar. After lunch it was empty and the food was good.

Traditional Hearty Breakfast

By Cheree D |

We ate here for breakfast three times while we were in San Francisco Once as a family of eight, once as a family of four and then as a couple. On each day, the service and the food was fantastic. The serving sizes are really generous so take your appetite with you! A casual and easy place for breakfast or lunch.

Great breakfast!!

By Dawn M |

Very convenient to downtown hotels in San Francisco. Beautiful decor, very clean. They required masks and verified our vaccination cards upon entering. Service was excellent. Great coffee, a must for my husband and I. Great food! We asked for extra crispy hash browns and were not disappointed. The chorizo fritata was delicious! We all loved our meals. It was so good that we returned a few days later. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Delicious brunch

By zwsxed |

Pancakes, French toasts, omelettes, hash browns and pasta. The staff were very friendly! We recommend visiting for a brunch!

Grilled cheese was nice.

By PomAussie |

Warm welcome from the staff when I arrived. I was sat in the window. I wasn't after much as I had been eating on a bus all day. I got a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. The grilled cheese was tasty and full of melted cheese. Could have done with a few more chips.

Great Breakfast

By Mark |

1 minute walk from the Hilton Union Square. Always a queue (a good sign, and it doesn’t take long before you’re in) fantastic service and a good breakfast menu. Highly recommend.

Surprising to not see a Q outside, TASTY

By Joanne M |

So tasty and didn’t have to wait 40minutes for a table. Chorizo omelette portion was huge, with hash brown AND sour dough toast included on the side. Go hungry!

Genuine American breakfast

By Karsten P |

Wonderful and authentic place to have your eggs and pancakes in the morning. Service was polite without being more... Prices and services are like you could expect for SF

Late Night Apple Pie - Perfection

By Mark J |

Visited the Mason Diner for late night desert - Perfection. Apple Pie and Ice Cream. This Diner is perfect for a late night snack - central location just off Union Square. We visited about 11.00ish on a Wednesday night and there were about 10 other customers. Watched the city go by in the comfort of a cozy booth.

Best place for breakfast

By Phyllis B |

This place was amazing! Alex was our waiter and he was great too. We had breakfast everyone agreed this is the place. Thanks again Alex for all the great info and being a awesome waiter! If I had anything to say is that I would prefer sausage patties to links and I didn't have coffee because they're wasn't any flavor options but yhats just me.

Huge breakfast menu.

By Dan J |

Lots of choice for meals. Service and food were fantastic. Inside of restaurant is also nice. I would return if coming back to San Fransisco.

Great breakfasts

By Sean F |

Good choice of breakfast and options. I really liked the option to have fresh fruit instead of fried potatoes which seem to come as standard with American breakfasts. Service was quick, food tasty and well presented. Dinner menu looked good but unfortunately we didn't get an opportunity to test it.

Good Breakfast

By boeingAde |

Picked here for a change to Tad's Steakhouse for Breakfast - Food and service was good, the place was busy. Blueberry pancakes were nice and hot coffee (no free refills I've noticed anymore) Good location. I want to say more but it was just Good, just did not wow like maybe a american diner should especially as it was surrounded by hotels so a lot of clients to pull in !

Better to go elsewhere

By The Discerning Pleb |

It claims casual american on its signage, casual shouldn't mean lazy. I walked through the restaurant no one greeted me or directed me to a table. first strike. try to sit down at a bench, and couldn't fit in, Strike 2. Strike three came when I finally sat at a free standing table and waited another 10 mins , at which point I stood up and walked out. MY advice walk across the road and go to Pinecrest.

Good place to eat in between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2.

By kjau1999 |

We came to San Francisco to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This was a good place to eat in between the parts as it was just around the corner. It was very quiet place and quick service. The food was good and not as highly priced as some of the places around. I would recommend this place if you are seeing Harry.

Eggs over-easy please!

By rebel-diver |

We were staying at the Handlery Hotel around the corner, which currently doesn’t have its own cafe or hotel restaurant - a casualty of the pandemic - but they do offer a 20% discount at the Cafe Mason for the duration of your stay, which proved to be great value as we were staying at the hotel for ten days. The cafe is a popular breakfast diner, possibly because there are so many hotels nearby, and most mornings there was a small wait to get in. There is a wide choice of menu items, including eggs, bacon, pancakes, omelettes, and Mexican dishes, to name just a few, but we opted most days for the tasty eggs over-easy with crisp bacon, sourdough toast, coffee, and a huge side of fresh fruit salad. My other half opted for a little variety with Eggs Benedict on one day, and pancakes with blueberry sauce on another, both of which looked delicious. The food was so good, we ended up skipping lunch most days. Service is friendly and attentive, and we appreciated the regular refills of coffee!

To try

By Edoardo Baesso |

Had breakfast in this restaurant, very fast service and quality dishes, enough choice and prices in the Californian average

Traditional diner doesn't let you down

By Janne S |

Very nice, traditional diner at the heart of San Francisco. The service was excellent and food was delivered smoothly and without delays. The place looks tidy and comfortable.

Great for breakfast

By Geraldyne1601 |

Perfect for breakfast time. We had a 20% discount thanks to the hotel concierge as the prices are quite expensive. (That’s why I put 4) The croissant doesn’t taste as in France or the Swedish pancakes….quite disappointed. Staff is lovely for the 2 days we went there.

Great service

By Claire Hallett |

This was round the corner from our hotel the Hilton, I’d read reviews, we went about 7.30am on a Saturday not that busy, quick service & good food for a good price too. Didn’t feel rushed like the other diner over the road. Would go again if in San Fran

Breakfast was Excellent

By Alistair W |

Visiting from the UK recommended by tbe hotel and we werent disapointed service and food was freshly cooked and good

Nothing extraordinary.

By Curiosity47031344843 |

Good and fresh pancakes but the Awards are exorbitant and we live in Paris! And in addition the recommended tip goes up to 25%... well beyond the standards of California. In addition, the waiter Alex told himself to cut us off several times the conversation to feel obliged to ask us if it was okay. We won’t go back and we didn’t leave a tip, which Alex notes on the Trip Tip ticket! Rude rude rude… not paying a dollar for a rude guy who needs to learn manners.

Great start to the day

By Lynn W |

We were staying at the Handlery Union Square Hotel, just around the corner and they gave us a 20% off voucher for the Mason Diner. Service was good, breakfast was delicious and the restaurant was roomy and yet a typical American diner. My partner chose Eggs Benedict with hash browns and I went for a mushroom Benedict, which I’d never heard of before but was great. I also chose a fruit cup as my side dish and this was a lovely selection of fresh fruit.

Good American diner

By roci_alcazar |

The place is quite large and very well located in the city. Very friendly service and great and delicious dishes. If you want a typical American diner, this is the place.

Lovely place and great food.

By Katie F |

Visited here twice, once for lunch and once for breakfast. The menu is really good variety for breakfast and lunch options. Reasonably priced as well. The staff were very friendly and welcoming especially Alexandra. I would definitely recommend and would return when back in San Francisco.

Lived up to my expectations.

By tonfan |

This is a large comfortable diner, the staff are warm and friendly and are happy to make customers feel welcome. The menu is extensive, has all you would expect from a diner menu. I opted for the two by four option , it arrived freshly prepared and I found it to be enjoyable. The waiter was attentive and came round regularly to see if I needed anything and to top up my coffee. I would recommend this diner without hesitation.

Good and plentiful

By vanessa |

We went here for breakfast…loved it. Very generous portions, I recommend taking just one dish of the American one to divide in two. The orange juice was the only one that truly tasted like orange that I have tasted in America. The coffee... don't take it😂

Mason Diner

By Sandra B |

Went to this Diner for breakfast and dinner as it was next to our hotel, The King George. The food is excellent and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It was reasonably priced and I would go there again if I return to San Francisco.

Banana and Pecan Pancakes!

By V. Donoghue |

Visited Mason’s one rainy Saturday morning and was promptly greeted and seated. The initial welcome was warm. I read a sign that stated Mason’s originated back the the early 1990s, and the decor didn’t look like it had been updated since. There were also Christmas decorations up which was unusual for the 14th of January. I also noticed there was a unusual smell in the air, but as I an visiting, I’m not sure if that is simply the smell of San Francisco (if you know what I mean) I was served by a range of waiters and waitresses which all came across politely. You were never waiting longer than a minute with lots of servers on stand. My only complaint is that, I requested if the Banana and Pecan Pancakes could be switched with French Toast, but was informed by Petra this wasn’t possibly because the extras were cooked inside of the Pancakes. I ordered anyway, only to discover that the Bananas and Pecans were on the side of the plate, meaning a simple Fresh Toast switch wouldn’t have been an problem. This issue may seem minor, but could have been easily avoided. In despite of this, the Banana and Pecan pancakes were delicious and extremely tasty. It may be important to some to know that there weren’t any laptop charging ports, if like me you travel with a laptop. The meal itself came to $19 with food, a mug of tea and tip - which isn’t too bad for SFO. I’m not sure if I’d visit again as such, but would definitely if little improvements were made :)

Lovely staff, great food

By murraylacey473 |

Had to wait an absolute age for a rental car, got bored and headed here for breakfast. We weren’t let down! Great selection on the menu, served quickly with a smile. Food was delicious. Worth popping in!!! Plus I wasn’t quite so irritated by the car rental company afterwards!!!!

Good food, nice service, place smells

By Valentyna Lew - NJ Real Estate Angel |

Good food, nice service, place smells funny like someone vomited. Waiter Vika was super attentive. Lots of room, we had a stroller with us

Great service and delicious breakfast

By Thomas K |

I was there for three weeks for breakfast. Excellent, speedy, friendly service by all (especially Alex, but also Alejandra, Gerardo, Roberto, Nina are all great). The food was delicious (fresh orange juice, granola, fruit bowl, omelets...) Thank you- great recommendation!

The Cafe Mason has re-opened this summer with limited hours, closing at 2pm each day. We have had breakfast there every day this week. The food has been delicious. The service has been excellent.

Mason diner San Francisco July 2023

By philip w |

Hi we went there for breakfast, the place was immaculate the service was ok, the food was good. The opening hours are from 06:30 til 02:30pm. We think this is the best breakfast place we have found in the area. The only downside is they are removing your plates before you have finished

Bad service and regular food

By David R |

Today we went at restaurant, my god there wasn't covid it was full; but the Service waitress Petra looked like a hangover or had a sleep she said I don't understand how is it possible is a restaurant dinner recognized. The terrible my food there wasn't croquet madame my French friend cry now. Sorry but it's true.

Loved it

By Albert C |

Great food and service. Alex was wonderful as our server. Was busy but they keep the place humming. Will definitely visit again

Very Very Bad Service

By Yannick G |

The service was very bad. I asked for Milk like 10 times and did not get it. The Servers where not friendly. As they noticed that we were not satisfied, they already added 18% tipp on the bill. Ne recommendation. The Meals are quite good tho.

Reliable diner but wrong hours

By Eye Candy |

Great diner but the hours posted on various sites are wrong. It’s open 630am to 230pm. I took an Uber across town to learn it was closed and ended up stuck in the dark.

Great diner near Union Square

By albertachickCalgary |

Had a wonderful breakfast at this busy diner. Food was very good as was the service. You may have to wait a few minutes to get seated but the line moves fast. Well worth the wait!

Great breakfast

Ate here several times and enjoyed a good hearty breakfast. Extensive menu available throughout the day. Would recommend.

Nice service

By Vivian V |

Good location The food is so good. My friend and I had a good time there. The restaurant is close to union square which is very convenient for us.

Good Breakfast Spot

By YayaShare |

Cafe Mason is a good breakfast spot in downtown San Francisco near Union Square. The long line for a table is a testament to the good food. The servers are very pleasant and there is a nice selection of typical breakfast fare.

Reasonably Priced Diner Not Far From Union Square

By David P |

Stopped in for dinner as this place was close to my hotel. It would be fine for breakfast, lunch or diner, is reasonably priced for the area. The service was quick, and the food was ok, though nothing particularly noteworthy. I would come back but probably wouldn't go out of my way to dine here.

Terrible service at every level of our meal from service to management to kitchen!

By Penz |

Honestly, we went to Mason Diner because our hotel concierge recommended it. What a mistake! Four of us ordered breakfast dishes with no special instructions. Three of the four meals arrived but the fourth was very very very late. So late that the three of us were already done. My husband’s meal wasn’t even that good- no seasoning/salt/pepper. There was obviously an issue in the kitchen. The meal should have been comped but no, a bill for almost $100 was given to us. Needless to say, as a former server I was not happy. The cardinal rule of food service is to deliver all meals at the same time. If there is an issue, then the customer is compensated in some my husband and I paid our share with no tip and a note saying the $20 meal should have been comped. The manager read the note and told me he would have comped the meal if he had known. It wasn’t too late to refund our credit card but he didn’t do that. So disappointed with the quality and quantity of the food, the service, and the customer care. Do better Mason Diner!

Great food Thank you Alejandra

By Explorer13609295968 |

First time went to San Francisco. We had our first breakfirst at Cafe Mason. Food was great and Alejandra remembered me when we went to Mason the second time. She served us well, and patience(because we came from China and not fluent English). Her smile and eye are deeply remembered in my mind. I will come back to San Francisco for her next year.

Good food and Good service

By TooOldtoRun |

Dinner at the Mason diner was very good. The décor is unpretentious but nice and clean. The staff was very helpful and prompt. The food was hot and very tasty. And surprising for San Francisco, we didn’t have to mortgage our house to pay for it

Great American Breakfast

By Tigerfeet44 |

Our family of 4 ate breakfast here three mornings and were very happy with the food, service and value for money. It was very busy at the weekend but the wait time was less than 10 minutes. Over the three days we ordered various different dishes including pancakes, eggs Benedict, frittata, eggs and bacon and it was all good. A great find.

Went here a couple of times for breakfast while staying in San Francisco. The food and service was superb both times. Has a good selection on the menu.

Good food

By whitbyabi |

We had dinner in here, burgers & fries; typical diner food. It was well cooked, filling and the staff were friendly. I thought it was a bit pricey for what we had but most things are in this city!!

First timers in San Francisco

By Michelle |

This was our first time in San Francisco and I always rely on Trip Advisor for suggestions. This has been our favorite breakfast spot so far. The staff is super friendly, Alex took care of us and did an amazing job.

Not your typical diner food, in the best way possible

By Clarke F |

This place was absolutely delightful! Venturing out for a late dinner, I actually went to another place and as I was alone I sat at the bar. I overheard the bartender tell the guy next to me to go to the Mason or another nearby place I forget the name of (which is funny because the place we were at served food and I had been about to order). So I took that as a sign to venture over to the Mason, and I could not be happier that I did. Anastasia was very kind and provided wonderful service. The gnocchi was fantastic compared to most Italian restaurants let alone to what one would normally find in a diner (that is if any other diner I've ever heard of actually served gnocchi. The gnocchi itself was good, properly cooked, and of the standard quality of what you would find in many solid Italian restaurants (the only difference is that you would pay notably more at other places). But the true star was the mushroom sauce it was in. This place was just stellar. I'm just sad I hadn't heard of it sooner.

Friendly and good value

By Rachel C |

I ate here when staying at the HI Downtown hostel next door. As a woman travelling and dining by myself, I have to say that the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. They gave me a lovely table right by the window and were friendly and attentive. The food was great too! Highly recommended

Typically typical

By Stef A |

We had our first breakfast in the United States in this cafe and we honestly weren't disappointed! We were received by Alexandra, a smiling and very pleasant waitress. To specify that our plates were copious, I don't think I need it... let's not forget that we are in San Francisco and that everything there is oversized so yes the seats were very copious and it was really good. The music is great and the American atmosphere is there!! I highly recommend if you are passing through the area!!

Pretty OK Place

By LOWA191968 |

This place was just ok for a diner. The food was a little too greasy for me but I had bacon so no wonder, I just didn't expect to have so much of it on my plate with my eggs.

Great for breakfast

By KarenM |

This place was located near my hotel so I had breakfast there a few times, good food and service the only thing I didn’t like was as a solo diner they really pushed for you to sit at the counter, I declined and it wasn’t an issue.

Good diner with nice food

By BBK613 |

I’ve been to the Mason Diner several times in the last year. It has always been a pleasant experience with good food at a reasonable price. My last visit for lunch was particularly enjoyable and our server, Alex, was very hospitable. Hope to return soon!

Delicious food, fair prices and excellent service.

By jglenn1976 |

Delicious food, good price and excellent service. At breakfast here and would not hesitate to eat there again. Highly recommend eating here if you are looking for a place to eat in downtown San Fran.

Fantastic service and food!

By aaiimmeess |

We visited here on Christmas Day, realising it wasn’t too far from the hotel we were staying at. Our server, Alex was fantastic! Really warm and welcoming. I chose the Eggs Benedict which came with a huge portion of fruit. A warm cup of English Breakfast Tea and freshly squeezed orange juice accompanied my meal. Really reasonably priced, very clean and I’d definitely come back next time in San Francisco.

Superb for Brekfast

Just returned from 10 day trip to San Fransisco & we ate breakfast here for 8 mornings and its a really nice spot, big and airy, good value and nicely cooked tasty food, cooked freshly, usually served fairly quickly. Can't go wrong & set you up for the day. Kids has brunch some days and really enjoyed it too

Great breakfast

We loved this place for breakfast. The coffee was delicious. I had the pancakes and my husband had the Ranchero with the herbed tomato. Everything was yummy. We will eat here again.

Pricey

By Andywrite |

Great food and busy spot that is clearly popular but is really pricey but this is standard in San Francisco. Staff were friendly and the service was great

Breakfast location

By BornToTravel |

We were looking for a breakfast location. Unfortunately, there are certain restaurants on TripAdvisor that no longer exist. When we realized this, we ended up here. The prices are high, probably normal in the city center. 2 drinks and 2 meals + taxis and tips easily cost $70! The portions (we had granola and avo toast) are large and sufficient. Drinks are overpriced as usual in the USA. Nice, attentive and pretty staff. ;) Unfortunately, you smell like a deep fryer after your visit.

Great find

By familytravelerswith4 |

Very welcoming Good food and strong coffee Fast service Great prices (especially for San Fran). Go early.

A Pleasant Place

By NM43 |

I ate lunch at Cafe Mason (aka Mason Diner) yesterday. The setting was pleasant (not as noisy as many restaurants are these days), the food was pretty good, and the service was excellent. I will return.

very good breakfast, great service

We ended up at Café Mason while looking for breakfast. The waitress Alejandra greeted us very warmly and also spoke German. The selection of breakfast dishes was very good. Our breakfast was delicious and plentiful. There was unlimited coffee. Alejandra appeared at the table several times and asked how we were. Everything was served quickly. The atmosphere is quite cozy and it is very clean. I would have breakfast here again, I can recommend the café without reservation.

Fair Pancakes, Crowded for Breakfast

By Nupester |

I ordered blueberry pancakes for a little extra and was disappointed to find they don’t actually cook the blueberry in the pancakes but just add a compote. I’m sure it’s the same for their banana and nuts pancakes. The pancake itself was just fair, certainly not of $14 quality. I sat at the bar so I got fairly quick service but you could see they were overwhelmed at the tables.

Good Find

By lex_loci_david |

Ignore the relatively complacent exterior. They bring out good food at reasonable prices. A bit of a hidden gem in San Fran's pretty overrated and over priced restaurants.

Lovely food.

By Dean-kate |

We were staying for a week next door in the King George hotel and used the Mason diner every day for breakfast and evening meals. The service was excellent and had coffee top ups which was nice to have as we're not used to that sort of thing back in England. The staff were friendly and helpful. And the food was just excellent we also had an amazing strawberry milk shake made with real strawberries and ice-cream which was to die for, we loved it and would recommend this place to everyone who is near union square.

Little gem of a neighbourhood diner with excellent service and delicious food!

By JELGoh |

My family and I recently decided to try this diner for dinner as it was just across the street from our hotel (and it is open 24 hours!). We were seated very promptly and service was fast. We have since been back for breakfast and dinner again, as the food was delicious. We were not disappointed each visit - each meal was yummy. Their billion dollar bacon and buttermilk pancakes deserve special mention, as both were super yummy! Their toilet facilites were clean. All in all, it was our favourite dining place in the one week we were in San Francisco. Definitely would recommend!

Great service, Great food

This place is probably by far the best breakfast we will have here for our time here in San Francisco. The food was great and the service was amazing as well. The food came in about 5 minutes, and it didn’t disappoint. I got the full stack of blueberry pancakes. My brother got a 2X4 and he loved the bacon pancakes and eggs. And my parents who were there got omelettes that they really liked. If you are going to get any pancakes, definitely get the full stack, the short stack isn’t enough. The table has a lot of variations of smuckers jam as well. The knives for cutting were okay but you can work around that, Overall I loved Masons Diner though. Definitely probably the best breakfast you can have in downtown. Overall loved it!

Typical US Cafe

By Dolce&Salato |

Typical American cafeteria, hearty breakfasts with coffee served in the cup just sitting. Typical experience to try, little tourist

Very tasty breakfast

By Andy |

Mega breakfast, we were there 2 days in a row and always ate something different! Super tasty and the staff, like almost everywhere, very nice! Absolutely recommended

Great breakfast and friendly service!

By TraveledViking |

Great breakfast with large portions. The Irish Benedict was perfectly done. By far a cheaper and better alternative to any nearby hotel options!

Easy dinner with a 2 year okd

By Shaun P |

After a terrible experience trying to eat at Pinecrest Diner we walked into Mason Diner and were greeted with a smile and seated quickly. High Chairs here!!! We shared the onion rings & Philly Cheese steak roll and our son had a Grilled cheese that was delicious. Food was better than expected and well priced. Server checked in on us a few times and staff gave our son high fives & fist bumps and made us feel welcome and wanted. Highly recommend for easy family meal and not too expensive.

Go ahead, it's great!

Top! Quality products, more than sufficient quantity (3 dishes for 4) Efficient, dynamic and smiling service Award consistent with others Diner We recommend closed eyes

Great dinner here with mum, huge meals! Yummy chicken salad and vege quisadellas! $26 total. Nice staff and quick service. Would go again!

Classic American Diner as we envisaged from Movies!!!

By mamiab |

Had a number of breakfasts here during our stay. Huge meals, friendly staff and good value for money. Classic diner meals, and classic diner seating. Enjoyed every meal we had here.

Overall OK

By Darlene M |

Great diner atmosphere. There was a good selection of dishes and the breakfasts we ordered were tasty. The service however was lacking. There was no water offered, no coffee refill offer until after the plates had been cleared away.

Good cheapest breakfast around

By Cassie K |

Great breakfast and cheapest around. A large dîner style breakfast joint with a good menu variety. Breakfast was good, not too greasy, and half price of a lot of the others in the area. It is noisy and always has a wait, but is worth it. We'd go back

Delicious and filling breakfast

By LisQ1 |

Worth a visit. Typical American diner. Big portions and well made and yummy! Would definitely recommend.

Decent diner

By Simon T |

Ate here on the first night mainly as it is right next to the hotel. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Had pasta dishes. Ate breakfast the next morning too. This was excellent.

Good food, friendly staff 😃

By Andreas Hasler |

Breakfast and Dinner was perfect, really tasty food. The waiters were really friendly and nice to our 7 year old daughter. When we come back to San Francisco we definitly will come back to this diner. Hats off 👍👍

Nice enough food

By Easel1973 |

It wasn't particularly busy when we were in so it was a shame to not get as attentive service we had become accustomed to in America, the food was tasty but not amazing, and without the service we only got one serving of coffee

Great service and food

By GenXbabe |

Had breakfast 3 mornings during our stay at the king george hotel next door. Nice waiters and good food. Definitely a great choice for breakfast if in the area.

Super stuff and food

By xekrax |

Based on reviews score seen on google I have decided to chose this cafe for breakfast. Once I came there was a lot of tables available. The stuff was superb friendly. I took chicken sausages with scrambled eggs and apply sauce + blueberry pancakes and cup of late. Oh, it was a challenge! I really enjoyed food, it was kinda different I used to like, but I am sold. I would love to have something same each morning. Brilliant! It is definitely worth visit!

Easy, convenient, reliable

By tk37206 |

Mason Diner is next door to the King George Hotel. It's open 24/7 and offers reliable diner food and fresh salads. Because of the hours I kept, I only ate eggs, but man, were they exactly what I wanted!

Great service, great food.

By Peachleyted |

We are here three times for breakfast while staying at local hotel. Great service, great food. Seems popular with locals and tourists. Nice range of breakfast options.

Great place with nice staff close to union square

Thank you Alejandra and Alex! Great food and service at Cafe Mason

By Kriss H |

The breakfast and the service here was so amazing that we went there 3 days in a row, and I even went twice on 1 day. Thank you Alejandra and Alex for serving us so promptly and ensuring that our breakfast was brought out very quickly. The scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, chicken wings and apple pie were so delicious! If I ever come back to San Francisco again, I'll be coming back for breakfast!

Busy but efficient

By Sarah W |

Had breakfast here on a Sunday morning. We were seated right away at 10:15 but then a line started to form. Staff were efficient and well organized. Eggs were okay, bacon and hashbrowns were great, hollandaise sauce was a bit odd.

True diner

By PeteJac |

Lovely pleasant staff; can be busy spot so allow time; great menu; window seats.. very reasonable we thought too

Wait for it... Breakfast

By AlleyDeBlanck |

Bit of a wait even for two people... small but decent size cafe. Tables can be a little close to each other. Food was very good. Lots to choose from. Outside/exterior makes it look dated but still good!

Great Diner Food

By Nikzleez |

Seated immediately. Service was friendly. Had some sore of eggs Benedict with their special bacon and side of hash browns. Quite delicious. I would absolute eat here again. Short walk from our hotel.

FANTASTIC

Went there 3-4 times whilst we stayed in San Francisco and it didn't fail us, Fantastic food, perfectly cooked, perfectly served. Couldn't fault it

Great service and food

By Zoe M |

I went here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by how lovely and welcoming the staff were. The food wasn’t fancy but was yummy and tasted like good home cooking. I really enjoyed my dessert (pecan pie).

Good Lunch

By Alan C |

This is a quaint diner in the Union Square area. I had a chicken quesadilla for lunch. The food and service were excellent. I had iced tea to drink. It was excellent. I recommend it. I would return there if I am in the area again.

Pleasant!

By Purplepinay |

The food was good and the staff was attentive. My family and I did not have a difficult time getting a table but there were times (when we would peer in) that we saw it was very full. That does say something about it. There is a reason why it has lasted this long. Reliable food with charming ambience.

Great breakfast

By Sally C |

Great food. Only used for breakfast, was given 20% voucher from hotel. Reasonable prices and varied choice. Friendly staff and great atmosphere.

Great Smile and knowing their clients as repeater ,

By YurPolux |

Great service and Good Food… you will never disappoint however you choose your breakfast…… We have not been there for diner but will be for the next trip. Thank you for your service

Slow service

By chapyBristol |

We went for breakfast before heading off for a trip to Alcatraz. The service was very slow, so it was quite stressful. No water was offered as it had been in most other places Food was ok, coffee not great.

A must have breakfast experience!

By Robert J |

You don't want to miss this one, the usual wait is well worth it. Exceptional breakfast, great service and a memorable experience.

By markedg |

Visited for Breakfast, and for late dinner. Great food attentive staff at reasonable prices. Great menu as well

Beautiful Breakfast

By SCORPIO67 |

Had an amazing breakfast at this restaurant. The restaurant was busy but the service was excellent and friendly. Food was delicious, had avocado on sour dough with fresh fruit, my husband had full breakfast & pancakes, there was too much to eat. It was the best food we had on our visit to the states, would highly recommend.

Very nice.

By Sandra N |

Nice dinner. It's good and hearty. Impeccable service. Good for the location which is very close to Union Square.

Average American Food

By yuntrip |

Open 24hrs! That’s pretty cool! The service was not bad, quick and friendly. We ordered Benedict (spinach & avocado) and spinach with feta cheese omelette. The taste was just okay. Hash browns were good. The total we paid was $45. If you are looking for a reasonable breakfast in downtown, this is a right place.

Good breakfast

By Vandra M |

Great breakfast, good service clean place friendly servers. Only downside was toilets not that clean, but restaurant was spot on.

Good food

By mariewalker2 |

The food was good but the service was rushed, we were lucky and didn’t have to queue for entry as others did.

great breakfast

By Francesco |

Beautiful American Diner, serves breakfast and lunch typically USA, local movie, always very genial and helpful staff, excellent quality of products, coffee 'is typical American. Great solution for breakfast and to experience the experience of typical American food

Friendly service, good food.

By Russ S |

Friendly service, good food - great for breakfast if staying in town. Our hotel (Handlery, Union Square) had a Mason voucher offer valid for three days). Recommended as an alternative to Pinecrest across the street.

good food, lots of it

By David B |

first trip to a diner and it was pretty good. food servings were very generous, very tasty. service was great with staff explaining the dishes and assisting with tailoring to suit our wants.

Cafe Mason, not Mason Diner

By KiYoung C |

open 6:30 am til 3:00 pm everyday a notch above than diner food. all homemade food and homemade sauces Benedicts, crepes, Avocado toast, fresh pasta, Clean, spacious, good food, excellent service, Many became regular patron on once experienced this place

Phenomenal breakfast

By Judge A |

This place was phenomenal. No wait for a table, and the servers were all very quick. The atmosphere was nice but not overwhelming, and the table was comfortable. But what really made this place shine was the food. I ordered a dish where I got two eggs, sausages, bacon and two pancakes. The eggs and meats were all excellent, especially the bacon. One person in our group ordered the blueberry pancakes which they loved, and they came with a blueberry jelly that they opted not to use, so I put it on my pancakes instead. It was very sweet, but it tasted divine. The breakfast potatoes were very good as well. The spinach and feta omelette was fantastic, and so was the Denver omelette. Everything exceeded our expectations, and the prices were reasonable. The rest of the menu had several appetizing dishes as well, there’s easily something for everyone. You can’t go wrong here.

Amazing, friendly, fantastic food!

By Ann P |

First time in San Francisco and we had breakfast here every morning as food, service, staff were all amazing! Our last morning was a Saturday and there was a queue to get in which speaks volumes. Staff very friendly and of course food was fresh and delicious. Will definitely visit when visit again. 10 out of 10!

Great pancakes

By Pauly-101 |

My wife and I visited this diner twice during our stay as we had a discount offer from a neighbouring hotel. First visit was fantastic with friendly service and excellent food (can’t recommend the pancakes enough). The 2nd visit was much more hectic as it was so busy and the staff seemed stressed out but it was still enjoyable. We’d have went back again if we had more time in the city.

Poor service and no gluten free options

By Niamh M |

Arrived on a quiet Saturday for lunch and the service was shocking, asked questions of options on the menu and the servers never came back with answers. Despite it saying online they had gluten free options when asked what was gluten free we were told fruit was the only options which was not suitable for a member of our group with celiac. Overall rude waiters and poor food choices. AVOID

No need to travel for quick food

By G.Girl. |

Always a busy place for a bite to eat . Quite amazing how many people use this place . The food is fine , unfortunately not enough variety. Service is general standard . But if it is just food you require then that’s what is coming .

Great breakfast

By wilkofamily6 |

We visited here each morning for breakfast while in San Francisco. It is very popular and busy but you go to the desk and give your name & number of people and then they call you when a table is ready. We didn’t wait long than 1/2hr but being 6 of us there were only a certain number of tables which could accommodate us. Great selection for breakfast, very pleasant staff and food was great and very filling which is just what’s needed at the start of a day sight seeing! Would definitely recommend.

Great diner breakfast

By Richie V |

What is a classic American diner with good food, and very good service from Alex and his team? From the moment you walked in the door, you felt welcome, and the food was served hot and quickly and a reasonable price.

Excellent!

By RobertoMurphy |

This diner is on Mason Street near Union Square. The ambience is great, the food fantastic, the service extraordinary and the cost very reasonable. It is a very good alternative if you happen to be by.

Breakfast San Francisco

By jamespsaltis |

Whilst we were staying in San Francisco, we dined out every morning for breakfast at Masons. It was an authentic American breakfast diner. Incredibly good staff food was amazing just what we needed for a big day of marching around the city. Thank you very much for looking after us.

Good Corned Beef Hash

By rimjhim1 |

This is a nice place for several choices for breakfast. We enjoyed the corned beef hash. Enough for two people.

Great food and staff

By saffy80 |

Masons dinner was the first place we went for breakfast and we didn't bother going to anywhere different. It was a lovely clean environment. The food was amazing can recommend pancakes and omelettes. The staff were amazing. In particular Alexandrea

Good food

By David |

I went here twice for breakfast and it was really good. I had the pancakes, but had various options to chose from and wasn’t bad value either.

Good breakfast

By 1219Robin |

We were seated straight away and served coffee which was not so great. I had the two egg breakfast and my husband had the eggy french toast. I gave him one of my poached eggs. Both entres were delicious. I appreciated them letting me butter my english muffin because typically it comes drenched in butter. A little thing but I noticed. Very reasonably priced.

Uncommon experience

By Scott F |

This is tough because I feel like we had an unusual experience. Our table was in some sort of server dead zone and we were ignored and could not get attention. We watched others around us get great service and people who arrived after us left before we had our meals. It was very popular. We were there around 10 on a Sunday and they weee moving people in and out efficiently. Seemed like a well run operation. The eggs Benedict were awesome. Open faced Olmert was ok, a bit bland. The coffee was extremely strong. Good experience except for feeling ignored.

For a good breakfast and family time.

By ArnoJTrip |

A nice diner place with a great atmosphere. The service is good and the price are correct. The blueberry pancake is the recommandation from the kids.

Good Food at a fair price

By MNRLVEU |

This was just around the corner from our hotel and we ate here a couple of times during our stay. Each time breakfast was tasty and the service spot on. Good place for a good meal especially in the Union square area.

Excellent Breakfast and service

By Dan M |

Super freshly squeezed orange in a generous glass made for great start of the day. Properly cooked bacon and egg with good toast and good coffee set us up for a day of adventure on our first visit to the city.

Fab authentic down-town diner

By SusieSueJ |

As a Brit holidaying in San Fran we were looking for a traditional down-town diner for breakfast/brunch and found Masons on Trip Advisor. It had good reviews and we weren't disappointed! The diner was exactly what I had imagined (and seen on the telly!) Friendly staff, booth seating and big mugs of coffee ....and an extensive menu - perfect! The food was lovely (obviously freshly made) and the waiting staff were really friendly. If you want an authentic American dinner experience - go here!!

Very welcoming

By Santix33r |

Mr. Alex was very gentle and available with us, we are Italian and made us feel at home with his very open and gentle character, he would come back just for him, a mention also for the others who treated us Super!

Paid bill and was told usual tip is 27%....!! I don't think so. Not coming here again.

By mr-shifter64 |

We popped in for a snack and was greeted by a friendly waitress. Food and drink ordered and delivered quickly. My sandwich was minuscule and only bulked out by fries.. My partner's sandwich was marginally better. And its expensive for the portion you get. We decided to pay the tip by cash as we wanted to.pay the bill by card. One server took the bill.payment, happy im.paying the tip in cash.Another server saw the recipt and said i had to.put the tip i intended to.pay on their receipt and then it doubles and then said its usual to.tip 27% of the bill. Sorry but i haven't just got off the boat and subsequently we gave the waitress an 18% tip in cash. Not coming here again , he was obviously trying to con us.. Well there's future business from.us gone... Goodbye and good riddance.

Excellent diner, a must visit

By Aidan G |

Excellent diner to visit for breakfast/ brunch / lunch. Great team, service and food. Credit to all the staff including Alex, Alejandro, Nina, Roberto and all the staff for their friendly welcome and service. Make sure and add the fruit bowl option for breakfast !

Good food with shady billing practices.

By Maria C |

The food was very good that we went there twice. Service was okay since it was very busy. We were a table of four. No problem on the first time. On the second time, the problem was that I left a cash tip & paid with a credit card adding 0 tip on my signed receipt. On my card statement I was billed for another tip I did not authorize. I feel if they did it to me they may be doing it to others.

Mixed review, one good, one bad visit

By Jeff C |

Stayed in SF Union Square area for a long weekend. Went the first morning and breakfast was fantastic. Had the corned beef hash benedict, and it was delicious. Real, tasty corned beef, not the super salty mashy type. Breakfasts were served fairly quick, even though the restaurant was busy. Service excellent. Day 3, we went back and had the opposite experience. Spent extra for the bacon which was supposed to be a specialty - nope, unless cold bacon is a specialty. Literally cold to the touch. When I told the server, they took it and brought it back in a couple minutes, OBVIOUSLY microwaved. So now it's hot, but it's chewy and droopy. Service was NOT good, basically got ignored most of the meal. Coffee never refilled, food less than good. I guess you just roll the dice here. And no, being busy is not an excuse. You're a popular breakfast spot near Union Square, do better.

Great Little Diner

By samuelmckinzie |

Wife and I got refered here from hotel staff. Ended up eating breakfast here 3 days. Max was great and super friendly. Good food. Good price. Plenty to eat.
