Not as good as last time we went

By Johanne H |

Had the shrimp matamoros, which was the only good part of my meal- the charra beans tasted burnt and the rice was undercooked. Corn tortillas were not homemade but store bought. Husband had a chicken plate which was ok except for the sides of beans and rice which were as described. Sorry but rice and beans are basic necessity in Mexican food and if you can't make those right then....their top shelf margaritas use gran gala which is not top shelf. They were way too sweet. I think we're taking this place off the rotation list. The last time we came it was ok, time before that not great .

Best salmon dish ever!

By hazelljbmh |

This is the fourth time I've eaten at Matamoros and each time it's been outstanding. I've only tried their Salmon Matamoros, grilled salmon topped with a sauce with shrimp and avocados wonderful! It's definitely worth trying. Service is always great. Restaurant is clean.

Great food.

I keep coming back here. Love the food the atmosphere and the staff. I have had the queso flamingo time and time again not to mention the sizzling fajitas.

Not all I had hoped for

By Something Tookish |

This had some high reviews and was convenient to my hotel so I tried it. Service was quick and friendly. Good salsa with the chips. The live music was not present, must be only on certain days. My dish was good, but not exceptional. Probably wouldn't go back.

The best visit in San Antonio!

Absolutely fantastic! Fajitas, nachos, shrimps! Highly recommend! Order more margaritas! It's amazing! Brandon was very helpful and friendly. He made our visit unforgettable.

Good place for Mexican food fix

We had a conference dinner at Matamoros. Took up almost entire place. The food was good and the wait staff was friendly. I will bring family back to this place

Dinner after apt moving

The food was delicious ... nachos and bacon-wrapped shrimp ... and the waitress was delightful ... we were early, so we missed the live music ...

We had the chicken/beef fajita plate. Delicious! Wait staff was attentive to drink & chip refills! We will go back!

Return Visit

By L H |

This is located right on the access road of IH10 between UTSA Blvd. and DeZavala, so easy to locate and access. We stopped in for lunch during the week and there was no wait to be seated. They have the booths marked off for social distancing and the tables somewhat but a few could be a little further apart. The staff wears mask as well. Our wait Francisco was very nice and professional. They did not offer disposable menus but the menus did look to have been clean and they also have a scan code on the table to use your phone. They have a large, varied menu with dinner and lunch choices. The chips were crisp and the salsa was just right flavor and not too spicy. The food we ordered was presented nicely and good servings. We ordered the lunch Tostada Compuesta and selected one chicken and one bean for $8.99. These come with lettuce, tomato, cheese, guacamole and cheese. I was only able to finish one and took the other to-go. The other other was for the Spinach Enchilada Plate at $8.99. It also was a hearty serving and came with rice and beans and tad of lettuce. These were very good and filling and had mushrooms on them as well. The tea is $2.59 and flavored well too. All in all a good lunch visit and we will return. I also noticed on the menu that they have Happy Hour and there is a full bar and a party room. There is a small stage where they have music certain times too.

A way to kill time

By Teresamea |

I was next door at Discount Tire with over an hour to wait. Matamoros Mexican restaurant is just steps away so a perfect solution. The atmosphere was pleasant. The staff friendly. Service attentive. These are the positives and why gave a 3 rating. My dish - chili relleno would have been a 2. It arrived looking beautiful and I tucked in with good expectations...disappointed. The entire plate was tasteless. Not sure how a chili can lose its flavor. It was served with a slightly sweet sauce; not appealing to me for a dish that should be savory with some heat. And too much cheese??? I didn’t think too much cheese was possible but this plate proved me wrong. The rice and beans were also bland. All edible but not enjoyable.

Delicious Restaurant!!!

By Dr. B |

My husband and I dine here weekly! The food is delicious and high quality, the margaritas are delicious, the ambiance is fun and during the weekend evenings, they have live music. Most of all, what makes Matamoros special are the staff. Friendly, professional, engaging, and hard working, they are the reason we go so frequently. Fast service, quality food, delicious cocktails, and so much more! While we haven't made use of their larger party space, they have a great space where they host large parties. Mui Delicioso!

Not as good as last time

By L H |

We have been to this restaurant before and it seems to be a "hit or miss" on food and service. This visit we had very good service but some of the food was just okay and some was very tasteful. They have a happy hour with only drink specials, no appetizer specials. They are known for their margaritas and they were tasty. The HH price for regular size was $4 and jumbo, which wasn't much bigger $5.50. The carne quisada I was told was very good and a good portion. But the Chicken Taco Salad ($9.99) I got I would not order again. The tostado shell was not as crispy as I like, the iceberg lettuce had white chunks in it and very few tomatoes. The shredded chicken, doesn't mention on the menu, but it comes mixed with a tomato base sauce, which I didn't care. I got the queso on the side that comes with it and it was barely heated. Maybe order the fajita taco salad as the meat looked better but still iceberg lettuce. If we return we will order something different than the salads. But again the staff was very attentive and nice. The place wasn't real crowded.

Good Happy Hour Specials and plenty of parking and roomy

By L H |

We were meeting friends for happy hour and were greeted and seated immediately. It was not crowded at all early evening and waitress got all the orders correct and was punctual. The house margaritas were tasty at $3 each and the sampler appetizer, which is usually $9.99, was only $6.99 during happy hour and satisfying for two people. The chips were plentiful, fresh, warm and crisp. The salsa was tasty with a "bite" to it. It was a very comfortable atmosphere and not noisy at all. We had a good time visiting and enjoying the place. Would go there again.

Could Have Been Better With A Little Effort

By Southridgeshannon |

Normally when we are on this side of town you'll find us at Pappasitos but we decided to try somewhere different this time. I had the seafood enchiladas which turned out to be cheese enchiladas with bland frozen cocktail shrimp on top. Sauce wasn't bad but calling them seafood enchiladas was way out of the ballpark. Service was ok but nothing special. They brought what we needed but not a lot of personality.

Fine Tex-Mex

By sfron81 |

We dined there after recommendation of hotel manager. She gave us good advice. My fish taco plate had very fresh fish and just the right mix of cilantro. My wife’s choice was Chile rejenos. She was most satisfied. Margarita happy hour added to our enjoyment. Mucho gusto!

Authentic mexican food

By twocalis |

We went here for lunch and there were not many people there. The staff were moving the tables around for a large party that was in the evening. The service was a but slow but the food was very good and authentic.

Always EXCELLENT food and WONDERFUL service

By Emil F |

We do not get to Matamoros as often as we would like; however, each and every time we go the food is marvelous and the service is friendly and efficient. We have so enjoyed each and every dish we have eaten. The margaritas are so perfectly done and the atmosphere is very relaxed and comfortable.

best tacos very authentic

By duane s |

i ate there last week got a plate that included 2 types of fajitas and a cheese enchilada but as a taco fanatic ordered a crispy taco on the side this was the best taco i have eaten big and totally stuffed and truly flavorful the fajitas were good too chips were fresh and salsa great most reasonable prices in town and great food to boot service was great and the tortillas were truly home made very good all around would consider this best in san antonio you want it as it is in mexico try this place

Good Times😘

By Lacey Ann |

We had a great lunch when we stopped by Matamoros. We were greeted with a friendly smile immediately and seated right away. Our waiter was helpful, friendly, brought refills without us even asking, and checked on us several times. The food hit the spot (Dal must've eaten his before I took a picture... LOL). They brought out the cutest tiny glasses of different flavored margaritas, which was fun. Lol. I always eat like 2 baskets of chips, so after about eating half of my taco salad (there was so much food), I had to take the other half home with me. Lol. (Which actually didn't make it home because I ate it in the truck about 30 minutes later😁🐷🐖.

Dinner and dancing

It has always been consistent in quality of Great food and wonderful atmosphere. I was impressed that even though it was full we had excellent service and quickly completed. Very well administrated. Live music is just marvelous

We went here for Lunch today

By Thomas B |

We went here for Lunch today after not having been to a restaurant in over 2 months. We shared a Botano Matamoros and we each had a Margarita. Our waiter was Fernando and he was superb. Having not be in a restaurant in over two months I was overcome with emotion as I felt for the restaurant workers who had been displaced from the situation of the virus. I know restaurants will be different from now on but I really felt for the workers who are just trying to make a living for themselves. We need to continue to support them with out business. By the way the food was excellent and so were the Margaritas. I can’t say enough how good Fernando was as our waiter.

Great food and Service !!!

By Sabastians M |

I have been there several times and always loved it. The Choice of enchiladas are creative so i like to try different ones every time i go. Service is always great . My last server was Alison, i believe and she was very friendly and even helped make a combo plate when i couldn't make up my mind. ALA CHARA bean are awesome !! And so are the shrimp topped cheese enchillladas with a cream based seafood sauce. Only thing that kept it from four stars was that there were a couple dirty tables. But i was a busy lunch so ...

Great jalapeño chicken enchiladas

By dancinggoats |

Service was great, food was hot, served quickly and had fantastic flavor. My only real criticism is that the hot sauce/salsa was rather bland. The jalapeño chicken enchiladas were amazing, full of well seasoned and full flavored chicken and the sauce was the perfect complement. Another person in our group got the chimichanga and besides being huge, her comment was that it was the best she had ever had. Will definitely return for more!

A very good Restaurant

Great Place to Eat and more

By Ornellas |

Xavier did a great job. We sat in the bar area, and had the Special margarita and an Italian Margarita. Perfect. Shrimp wrapped in bacon for the appetizer, perfect. Fajitas for two, fantastic. They had mariachis and a live salsa band after 930. Cool place. Thanks for having a great place to eat and socialize.

Delicious Eats!!

By Laura B |

Food was great. Too bad they don't serve breakfast. Delicious hand made flour tortillas!! A must Go!

Outstanding food and drink

Best fajitas in south Texas. Margarita perfect compliment

Good food

By Claire L |

We had never been here before and was looking for mexican food near our hotel since we had been driving all day and found this place with a packed parking lot. We were glad we came in because the food was good, tea was excellent and salsa was good (it had a little kick to it) and the guacamole was good. Will definitely eat here again.

OMG Fajitas for 2

By Irene M |

That was a lot food. Great taste charro.. beans yum. The queso was very good and thick. The food came out in an abundance.. From walking in to leaving very friendly staff. Our server Brandon was very nice with great service and a smile.. The restaurant is very big and nice. I would come back just to try something else. The Sopapillas came out warm and crisp. You have to try those. Those are not on the dessert try so ask.

Not as good as we remember but still a very good value

By evl671 |

The fajitas weren't as good as we remember and we also noticed that the few people in the restaurant were not ordering the fajitas. The chicken was very good but there were only two small pieces of pepper and and the rest was huge onions. The sides were good and our server made sure we had enough tortillas. Overall good but not excellent.

Matamoros Restaurante & Cantina

Perfect family atmosphere. Great selection of appetizers and entrees. The two year olds with our family loved the food as well as the adults. Very family friendly. Huge portions!! We were so stuffed after this meal. Great service!

Friends' Birthday celebration

By Miralexis F |

We had a party of 15 and we were seated without any issues. I had the raspberry margarita but it was too sweet for me, however, the blue agave margarita was great. The Fiesta platter was great especially the shrimp. The service was also very good. The live music was fun and I enjoyed seeing everyone dance and having a good time. The atmosphere was happy and relaxed but definitely a mature, family oriented crowd. I look forward to visiting this place again.

Disappointed in our favorite Mexican Restuarant

By cottongirlboise |

We have ate at Matamoros for years and the last two times have been somewhat disappointing. First, on the last visit in the bar where the bartender, who is very nice, but constantly plays with her hair, uses her phone and never washes her hands and then proceeds to prepare drinks with squeezing limes, etc. Tonight, there was a long hair in our salsa. We told the waitress and she just said she was sorry. We did eat our meal but not happily. Upon leaving I told the manager about the hair and he just brings us a dessert for our trouble. I am sorry to say we will have to find another mexican restaurant.

Good food

By Babester95 |

Ordered the jalepeno chicken enchiladas. Very tasty! Best Mexican rice and fried beans I've had in a long time. Top shelf margarita is also good. Definitely recommend eating here. Service is fast and good. Thumbs up!

GREAT FOOD! GREAT SERVICE!

By Jenna |

We were in the San Antonio area on a spring break trip and decided to come here to eat dinner. Originally, we were going to go downtown to eat at Mi Tierra or La Fondas, but didn’t want to have to fight the traffic and find parking and wait 1 1/2 hours to be seated once we got there. We found this place close to our hotel and decided to give it a chance. It’s a very large building with lots of parking. We were seated immediately when walking in. The service was great and our food was amazing. Very large portions for a great price (compared to where we had originally planned on eating). Will definitely come back if we are in the area. We were very impressed!

Very Fast service!

By HailStorm |

We didn't get the name of our server but on the reciept it said our server was Otniel. He was a great waiter! We were undecisive on what to order. So Otniel suggested the Chipotle chicken. It was awesome! Our order didn't take more than 10 minutes to arrive at our table. Very impressive! Our drinks never ran dry and our waiter's suggestion on Chipotle Chicken was awesome. The food was fabulous and the price was not as expensive as we thought it would be.

Vegetarian possibilities

By possum1167 |

The frozen mango margarita was terrific ( peach, not so much ). But, more surprising was an apparently new section ( so new, the waiter wasn't even familiar with it ) in the menu featuring vegetarian selections. I tried the chile rellenos, stuffed with a spinach and mushroom filling. Of course, it was smothered in Jack cheese, but the spinach flavor still came through and was quite tasty. My mother-in-law always gets the shrimp wrapped in bacon, because once she finds a good thing, she is afraid to take a chance and give something else a try. My husband had the enchilladas. Sorry, but to him it was ordinary Tex-Mex fare. Our waiter was extremely attentive and after my husband complained about too much ice in his margarita, got him a fresh one with no ice, but prepared in a chilled container.

Nice Place

By Sarah A |

We have been to Matamoros a few times now since we've moved to San Antonio. We have always had a great experience. First time we went was on a Saturday night for the salsa dancing. The band is great. We have since gone back for lunch and dinner and have always really enjoyed our food and service. I always get the enchilada verdes, and my husbands normally gets the steak tampiqueno. both are very tasty. And the tortillas are always fresh tasting. Would definitely recommend checking this place out

A Favorite When In San Antonio

By Aviarian |

Great Mexican food, tortillas made on site and puffy-delicious. Service is efficient and personal. Veg options are excellent. We've been several times when visiting the area, never disappointed.

So good we went two nights in a row....

By JimmieMacPDX |

Went to this place two nights in a row we liked it so much. First night Thursday, 7 February 2019 We flew in from Seattle, arrived SAT about 6:30 PM. Gawdawful experience in rental car trying to find hotel out on I-10 West of downtown. Finally found it after more than an hour and a half following idiotic Garmin instructions. On our various jaunts east and west on I-10 we passed Matamoros, near where we eventually found our hotel (we surrounded the hotel more than a few times hotel, both while we were on the frontage road and on I-10. After getting checked in at hotel and getting car unpacked we decoded to go out to eat at a real restaurant, not fast food, and decided that Matamoros, which we had passed several times, looked good. We got there late, it was after 9:00 PM. Place almost empty. We we worried that they were closed or would soon close and not seat us. Thankfully, we were welcomed with open arms and escorted to a nice booth. Place was not at all crowded. Wonderful waiter,"Mateo". Young, fully competent and a most engaging manner and great knowledge of the house specalties. And patient with two old er folks who had spent to much time on planes and lost on I 10 / 410 that evening. I can't remember what Sally had the first night.. I had the cheese enchilada plate. Mine was really good. Had a Tecate with it. Sally also enjoyed her dinner as well her Tanqueray gin and tonic. We were tired after the stress of driving on San Antonio's notorious freeways after dark in an area we were unfamiliar with and with a malfunctioning Garmin. Really stressed. It was important to us to be able to just sit, eat slowly and unwind. It was late but at no time did we ever feel rushed or that the restaurant folks wanted us to leave so they could close up. We were made really welcome and after the evening we had on the roads, that was really great. Second visit, Friday February 8, 2019 Table 33/1 Check No. 4/40041 After a busy day in and around San Antonio getting things organized for the surprise BD Party we were going to ( and help set up for on Saturday, 9 Feb) it was time to eat dinner. As we were at our hotel deciding where to eat Sally suggested that we go back to Matamoros as it was near, and we knew how to get there. I readily agreed, and remarked that there had been a lot of other things on the menu that I wanted to try. So off we went, getting there about 7:00 PM. Much busier than the prior night. No idea if it was because we were earlier or because it was a Friday date night. We were seat right away though, at a nice table right next to the dance floor. I ordered a grilled shrimp item , Shrimp Matamoros. Sally had the beef taco salad. We each had a drink. Watched the band begin to set up for a salsa dance night. We were so tired, though, that we didn't stay to dance. Great food, wonderful staff, nice setting. Reasonable prices. Next time we are in SAT I am sure we'll go to Matamoros Restaurant and Cantina again. Well worth it.

Acceptable Tex-Mex

By GEORGE P |

Very average Tex-Mex food. Heavy but savory and tasty. The selection is also very typical. In sum good but not great.

Not the best

By AidaTexas |

Service was good. Very few people eating there during prime dinner time. That was surprising. We ordered a margarita on the rocks. It tasted terrible. Went with the frozen margarita. Much better. Salsa was good, but not spicy enough for me. Ordered green salsa. Still not spicy enough. Had the Matamoros soup. Mostly vegetables, very little chicken. Won't return.

Less than expected.

By Ted R |

I hate giving "Bad" reviews, but this experience deserved it. I was pre-warned that the service was poor. I can confirm that now. Thank goodness our group was in no hurry whatsoever. Pros: Food was above average, the Margarita was excellent and the Chips and Salsa were also good and plentiful. Cons: In all fairness, we did have a group of about 20 people, but we did call in and made a reservation. Multiple requests were made for menus long after only half received menus. Multiple times we were told "Oh, OK", but we ended up finally sharing menus. Multiple requests were made for table settings. Multiple times we were told, "Oh, OK". I think on the fourth request the other 1/2 of the table got theirs. Multiple requests were made for Tortillas after our Fajitas arrived. We were told "Oh, OK". At least 10-15 minutes passed with our food getting cold before they finally arrived. Multiple requests were made for Hot Sauce, and yes, after being told "Oh, OK" a couple times, it finally arrived after that customer was almost done with their dinner. I specifically asked for No Onions or Guacamole but extra Bell Peppers, instead I got extra onions and guacamole and NO Bell Peppers. You get the idea. Most every request for the basics was met with "Oh, OK", but nothing would happen. The servers would return to see if everything was OK, but not deliver the last item they forgot. The restaurant wasn't very busy and we tried to make requests in unison so we wouldn't overwhelm our servers. Several people just quit asking for water and other items. Overall, other than the food being good, I would not recommend this restaurant. Sorry Matamoros, you have a lot of potential, but from what I have heard and what I experienced on this visit, you have a lot to improve on. Your help was actually fairly friendly, but they repeatedly failed to complete any request they said they would handle, including the basics

Excellent service, average food

By askier55 |

The server was helpful and friendly and food arrived to our table of three timely. The atmosphere was lively and fun. The fajitas were average/under seasoned. Overall average food and really not memorable.

Great food! Great drinks! Great Staff!

By BTraveler70 |

Very good Mexican food! One of my favorites. I've been dining there for years. I'll be back this weekend. Highly recommend.

fajitas still good

By evl671 |

Had the chicken fajitas and they were good but didn't seem to have as many grilled onions as usual and there were no peppers at all. Still, overall they were good - enough chicken (good seasoning) and tortillas. Onions were sliced better than last time so were cooked better. The chips and salsa are always very good. Service was good.

Average

By Qness47 |

We came on a Wednesday around 6pm so there were only a handful of people. I will say that our server was very attentive and friendly. Atmosphere: Halloween decoration were all over which was neat to see. They have low lighting so some might consider it a romantic feel. Chips and salsa for the table. They were good and fresh and salsa was tasty. Entree 1: Steak Taco Salad- my partner rated it a 2/5. He felt that it was plain and in a way tasteless. The fajita tasted old. Entree 2: Jalapeño Chicken Enchilada- this was good but maybe I misunderstood but i thought the jalapeños were going t be cooked into the enchiladas instead they were spread on top. I was hoping that it have more of an enchilada sauce taste. I give it a 3/5. Cleanliness: I was a bit put off that the lamps hanging from the ceiling were super dusty to the point where I at first thought they were part of the Halloween decorations...thought they were fake webs—yikes! Also the trim around the booths were pretty dirty.

Best Fajitas in SA

By Phil R |

Went here on a Sunday after church to get the mixed Fajitas special two for $18.99. They give you enough meat to make at least eight tacos. It comes with beans and rice and grilled onions and green peppers. We take at least half home to eat for two days.

Good solid Mexican cuisine!

By Dave E |

Stopped by for lunch, I had the enchilada plate with a crispy taco, my wife had the sampler appetizer plate. Food was good, I have had better. Place was clean, restrooms clean too. Service was great! I will give it another try in a few months.

Great Food Excellent Staff

By ofie b |

Matamoros is conveniently located, has delicious food and the best owners and staff ever. Has also won many awards for their fabulous margaritas. On weekends you can also enjoy Mariachi music and salsa dancing. Awesone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of Atmosphere

By mlarryeliz |

We needed a restaurant in the SA Medical Center area and wanted some Mexican food. We had an odd-size party (7) that resulted in their inability to seat us easily despite the facility is not averse to accommodating larger parties. We finally squeezed into a booth for 6. They have live music and the entire place is VERY loud with or without the music. Food was ok but nothing to write home about. Our waiter was excellent and prompt. We don’t expect to return.

This is a Keeper

By bobemac |

We found Matamoros by accident. We were having our car serviced. The building used to house a Chinese restaurant. The chicken fajitas were on special Sunday and Monday. So we ordered them. Wowie, the best chicken fajitas ever, and lots of them. Served on a skillet overflowing with large pieces of marinated breast meat, with lots of onions and green peppers. This came with great Charro beans, guacamole, and Pico. The endless chips, tortillas, and green (hot), or red salsa was also delicious. We had a friendly and efficient server named Adrian. Matamoros was a good place to find, and it is a keeper.

Bday Perfection

By 4ElevenTechs |

Celebrated another year of life with a good friend of many years. If their life is half as good as the food they will be happy and prosperous. The service was attentive, fun and knew exactly what we needed before we asked. Thank you for a memorable night

Good food, but even better salsa

By jesfire415 |

We were invited to celebrate a birthday. First of all the service is good and found this place to look clean. We ordered the Fajitas plate and it was good but not great, the enchiladas were also good but not over the top good. The drinks were pretty weak and not very good. The highlight of our visit was the Salsa music. We really enjoyed the music and having fun watching others enjoy the music!

WOW - Great Mexican

By Deena P |

We finally found our favorite Mexican place! There are lots of mexican places to choose from and I have several that I love going to. This one is my favorite though. Great flavor of food and variety.

Food is average but they give you plenty of it

By jthomas1974 |

We ate at Matamoros Mexican Restaurant and the food was average but they gave us plenty of it. We could not eat all they served us. Some of their food was extremely spicy hot and hard to eat for someone who likes food mild.

Excellent

By donane15 |

Excellent food, great music and atmosphere, the service is also good to, this is a place anyone would want to visit. All this at reasonable prices are a winning combination. I really like it.

Eh.....

By Steve R |

We were the only ones in the restaurant on a Tuesday night so we were skeptical but tried it anyway. Our waiter was fresh outta training and he was trying too hard to please us but our food took forever like the ticket was ignored in the kitchen. The food was okay. Nothing to do cart wheels over....

Horrid.

By robert d |

Brutal--worst Mexican meal ever in San Antonio. Only way to describe the food is greasy and tasteless. The tacos and burritos literally made me sick. Suggested alternative-anywhere.

Lunch today

By DownVegasTown |

This restaurant is near my office and I have been a few times. Last trip I took my wife who thoroughly enjoyed it so today when our first choice was closed I said where to now. She asked about Matamoros. I knew she enjoyed last trip but was surprised that was her first response. We arrived about 12:30 and it was not too busy. We skipped the lunch menu and ordered what we wanted from the main menu. We could have save a couple bucks but would have to pick something different than what we wanted. I choose the Jalapeno chicken enchiladas with re fried and charro beans instead of rice and my wife choice mixed fajitas with re fried and charro beans. I tried the peach margarita which was very tasty but a bit sweet for my taste. I wanted to order a beer after that but was getting way too full. If you like spicy, be sure to order the chili torreados as a side and the green sauce to go with your chips. Ask for Allison at lunch time as she is great.

Wait staff efficient food hit and miss.

By L H |

Visited for lunch and had been a couple of years since visited. The spinach enchiladas were full of spinach and a plentiful serving and tasty. The tostada compuesta no so much. The tortilla was tough, not crispy, the lettuce was white chunks, only a few little tomato pieces and a dollop of avocado. Their chips and salsa were good though as the chips were fresh and crisp and the salsa was milder with good flavor. Noticed they do have a happy hour with specials but would order something else at least not the "chalupas". The staff was efficient and pleasant though and plenty of seating. They also have a spot for performers so must have music on certain nights.

Patrons of this Local Eatery

Great place, good atmosphere and upbeat environment. This is a locally owned franchise from some good folks who know how to serve their city. I frequent this place with wife and friends, and have never had a bad experience. Great service and Awesome servers.

Good Food - Good Service

By TahoegpSA |

Had lunch with my Son at the restaurant of his choosing. We were seated almost immediately and provided with chips and a nice salsa. Our drinks arrived within a minute or two. The restaurant was very busy; however, we received very friendly and efficient service throughout the meal. I had the shrimp fajitas. A very good portion of very tasty shrimp were served on a sizzling platter with peppers and onions. This was served with sides of charro beans, rice, guacamole, and pico de gallo. My Son had the seafood enchiladas which were also quite tasty. We will return.

Never seems to be busy but always good

By Susieangelgirl16 |

We don’t go here often but the food is usually good. My husband loves the big plates with everything on it. I’ll eat the nachos or chicken enchiladas. The place is clean and had good service and is close to lots of shopping. They have a bar and live music sometimes which we could do without.

Average at best, don't understand the hype of this place

By finesilver |

This place was ok not great, I went there for a party/celebration recently with a large group. I ordered fajitas which were some beef and some chicken. They do not come out sizzling, they just come out on a plate with rice and beans and a small dollop of guac. They were not warm when they got to me and frankly were pretty tasteless which was disappointing given this place's high TA rating and other critical acclaim. The salsa was average also. The place was crowded with lots of locals so perhaps I ordered the wrong thing. Still it was pretty bland at best. Service was ok, our group could have used one more server, still, the food sat on trays for a long time when it came out versus being expoed by the kitchen. Not sure I can recommend, surely there is better food like this all over SA. I am still searching.

Not enough Servers

By jacksprat21 |

I'm going to give this place an average, due to the fact that i was unable to be waited on, as there were too many parties to staff ratio. It was a fun and thriving place, with live music, and a very happy atmosphere, however, it should be staffed for such, in my opinion. I am not a high maintenance customer by any standards, however, when I'm dining solo, don't give me to a waiter with 3 large parties. I never got a second drink, and had to sit a long while without even receiving my check. The margarita, however, was fantastic, and the chips and salsa were great. The hostess was very friendly, and when I had to leave elsewhere to find dinner, she made certain to find someone that could recommend a great pizza place. I would love to try this place again, maybe just not on a Saturday night.

Awesome Mexican Food! Superb service!

Matamoros Mexican Restaurant & Catina located at 12844 W Interstate 10, San Antonio Texas. The food was wonderful! The service of all staff we encounter excellent - our server was Jose who acted like we were the only customers he had - he was the best server I think I've ever had! Price reasonable, worth a visit for sure!

Good service, food and prices!

It was a Friday night. This was our 1st visit. The atmosphere is nicely lit and decorated. Our server, Alma, suggested items and was so friendly. The chips were stale, but the salsa was flavorful. We had mixed fajita nachos and quesadillas. Both were fine. Margarita was good too. It was enjoyable until the loud mariachis came around. Recommend.

Dining Room Open

With the dining room open and a coupon we decided to stop in for lunch during the week. We received a friendly greeting and were seated promptly. The tables didn't appear to be marked off for distancing but the waitress was seating apart and the place had only two other space occupied. They do have disposable menus as well as order at the table scan code menus. We were told the coupon could only be used on a dinner meal (even though the coupon was only for an entree up to $10 and all the dinner entrees were $11.99 and up). So we ordered the cheese enchilada plate that came with two enchiladas (your choice), rice, refried beans and a spec of salad. The chips and salsa were fresh and good and the food came in a timely manner. We thought the price difference between lunch and dinner plates were due to serving size but if so then it was a small portion for a dinner plate. The food was piping hot and hope you like cheese because the enchiladas were stuffed with loads of cheese and more cheese on the top with just a tad of sauce. All of the food was satisfactory but for the price, even with a coupon, not as much. The location is convenient and there was plenty of private parking as this is a stand alone building. The place was clean and the waitress was nice.

Really good Mexican food

This food was worth the drive. We went here to use some gift cards -- literally bypassing tons of Mexican restaurants as it is on the other side of town for us. But the food was really delicious. We both got the Enchiladas Verdes and loved it. We also got the chips and guacamole, which was also very tasty. We're only doing take out still and decided to get 2 sangria margaritas to go along with our food. They were on point. We will have to come back here even when we don't have gift cards. The food is just that great.

Problem with restaurant's internet coupon.

By Ontheroadagain2009 |

In late May 2009 our party of five ate at this restaurant. At the end of the meal, the manager refused to accept a "buy one, get one free" coupon that had been printed from their website the same day. The coupon's fine print showed an expiration date of May 1, 2009. The manager said he would have the coupon updated on their website, but as of June 2, the coupon still shows "May 1st". Another couple in our party had their coupon from a newspaper (with the correct date) which the manager honored.

What is all the hype about?

Recently, the SA Express News published their city restaurant favorites. Why this made the list escapes me. The restaurant is very spacious and has a bar with multiple stools, an area to the left of the bar with regular tables as well as another large dining room on the other of the bar. The bar is probably very popular as it is attractive with two large TVs on either side of the shelves filled with liquor and the underside, of the bar, is lit by red rope lights. There is a large banner which proclaims that this restaurant was voted best Mexican restaurant and best Margarita. I cannot comment as to the Margarita, as we did not drink alcohol at lunch. The place was not very busy and only a few tables were taken. The wait staff is attentive. I was pleased to see Mexican coke, a local favorite. I ordered cheese enchiladas and my husband ordered beef (picadillo/ground beef) enchiladas. Both come with a chile con carne sauce. The plates arrived, at the table and they were very hot. The sauce was not very flavorful; it was flat tasting. What I do not enjoy is the use of a heavy amount of comino (cumin) on the part of some Mexican restaurants. It is as if they use this, in great amounts, that is what makes the food Mexican. Not! The rice was so loaded with comino (cumin) that I could not eat more than just a small taste. We were given our choice of re fried beans or charro beans. We chose refried beans and they were good. The cheese enchiladas were not the best we have in San Antonio. Not by a long shot. SA has a wealth of Mexican restaurants, especially the smaller, local, family-owned restaurants. Most of them have better Mexican food. For a better enchilada plate, to to the Blanco Cafe (several locations around SA) or Chiladas, on NW Military Drive, in the same shopping center with Johnny Shook's, a type of old general store. Most restaurants add a little bit of lettuce and chopped or sliced tomatoes on the plates. My tomato was almost rotten. Yuk! Not impressive! We decided to try this restaurant as it always has large groups of people, especially in the evening. They have musical guests and have a large bar area. I feel that perhaps that is what draws people to the restaurant. Perhaps they have good drinks. Lunch for two people with drinks was $22.70, without tip.

mexican food kicked up a notch.

Had lunch and dinner at the location in Shavano Park and both meals were fantastic ! The level of spices was perfectly balanced with the natural flavor of the food and the salsa is the best we have tried.

Good!

I have to laugh at the people saying the food isn't "authentic Mexican food" if you travel to different parts of Mexico, you'll soon learn you'll get an array of flavors/recipes for the same dish. That being said, this place was clean, staff friendly & the food was good for a good price and the portions are huge! Tortillas are thicker than I prefer but tasted okay

As authintic Mexico cuisine you'll find in San Antonio

By BostonBabeBoston_MA |

This was a great meal. There are lots of Mexican places to choose from in San Antonio but this was the best I found. Everything is fresh and tasty. I had the tamales and they were fantastic. My ex had the burrito and it was huge. The staff was lovely and very mexico authentic as well.

Pathetic

From the service to the food to the price. What a joke! $13.00 for enchiladas that were not even good! There’s a reason I live 3 miles from this place and it’s the first time I ate here. Never again! Horrible horrible horrible.

Very good quality Mexican food in a unique environment

By ColradoWeatherguy |

We ordered fairly basic items (burrito, enchiladas, combination plate). The food came quickly, everything was very well prepared and tasted quite good. Service was exceptional. Our waiter went the extra mile to make sure that we had everything we needed, including providing some little extras to help keep our 1-yr old happy. The atmosphere was unlike most Mexican restaurants. The dining area is quite open, with high ceilings and nice lighting. Decor was modern and tasteful, rather than the usual somewhat gaudy environments we find at many Mexican restaurants. The dining room and the restrooms were VERY clean.

Very average salsa and entrees.

We were disappointed in the food here. On appearances, the place was clean and had a nice atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the service good. But, the food was very average and even on the bland side for Mexican food. They did have an extensive margarita list but we didn't try any. Maybe that is their thing.

Decent dinner at matamoros

Went here with friends- happy hour drink specials are from 3-7. The frozen lime margarita is very good for $3. I had the jalapeño chicken enchiladas- very good but more jalapeños would have been better! Chips were good but the red salsa was very bland. Our server brought me a green salsa that had some nice kick to it, but you have to ask for it. Everyone else enjoyed their meals too. The only thing lacking here is a patio. They had some very good mariachis playing and I believe they also have live music on select nights. I would go back to try some of their other dishes on the menu.

Perfect Place , Food and service

Tastes like RE-heated frozen meals!

By Michelle J |

The food was absolutely awful! It tasted like some kind of frozen meal you get at a grocery store but not even the good kind. Service was not very good either.

Really great Mexican food

By lucsimsthomas |

I simply love this restaurant. My husband and I drive across town to eat here and it is always worth it. We usually go on a Tuesday, but for some reason ended up going on a Thursday this time. It was such a fun atmosphere. There was a guy playing music and lots of dancing. The musician was multi-talented as he played several instruments. Tuesdays are usually very quiet but we loved the change. We always order the same thing (Enchiladas Verdes) and the food is always delicious. They have the best sangria margaritas we have found. The service, as usual, was great and the chips were pretty good, too. Even with all, the construction, we will keep making our way to this restaurant.

NOT IMPRESSED!

By boo2U |

My sister brought us here for lunch, the place was almost empty but seemed like a nice enough place...we got our salsa and chips YUCK...chips stale and the salsa was awful, we set them aside. Then we all ordered drinks ( I'm on vacation) I ordered a margarita, one of their "specialty" drinks...YUCK, it was not good at all -but drinkable....when our food came, I was not impressed, it was just "OK" to borderline awful. The service was ok and the atmosphere was pleasant enough. If we had been alone, we would have left, but I didn't want to embarrass my sister who had brought us here, so I just ate what I could. We were a bit upset because when we come to San Antonio, we come to visit family and eat, eat, eat....spending money on horrible food was a big waste of time, appetite and money for us. I will never come back to this place and next time my sister suggests it, we will beg to go elsewhere. -don't waste your money or your taste buds on this place. I think if your from somewhere else, other than San Antonio, you might find it good, but for a native Mexican, from San Antonio who knows Tex/Mex food.....NUNCA MAS!

Love this place!

Francisco is the bomb! He is the best when it comes to waiters! He is so attentive! We love the food, drinks, and atmosphere! We will be back!
