Go to the Matterhorn here on a Cold Winter Day or a Foggy San Francisco Night. I have been going to the Matterhorn for over 8 years now and every time it never disappoints. I went here recently for my wife's brithday. The restaurant specializes in the various types of fodue (meat and cheese). The ambiance is great and it really transports you to a Swiss Chalet high up in the Alps. The service is always top notch and it is a great place for groups because you can get 6 people on one round table to share in the experience. Each fondue comes with a very fresh side salad and fresh bread, that is always very good. I like the Spicy One which is a cheese fodue with pepperoncinis and spices...and don't forget to get a side or sausage to dip in the cheese otherwise you are really missing out. And if there's room for desert try the chocolate fondue that comes with a variety of fruits to dip. Lastly you might be thinking the you've been to the Melting Pot so this must be similar. Well its not. I've been to the Melting Pot in San Mateo and it feels like a cheap rip off. I kept thinking to myself I've had way better and that's why I go to the Matterhorn when I want fondue. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

The four of us has four fondues! One cheese- the Natural, one meat- the Bacchus and two chocolate. Simply excellent!

We were in our rental car, late at night and literally checking opentable as we were driving and we found this place within a mile and thought it would be great to unwind and eat a longer meal without cramming :) We were very familiar with Melting Pot from back home and knew the meal would be relaxing, take a long time and be great food and fun and Matterhorn didn't disappoint. One thing to note valet parking only available on the weekends if you are in a car if that matters to you. We had 3 of us and ordered more than we could really eat, cheese for 3 and then beef for 3 and then added shrimp and pork. Also had some win and their wine list was quite comprehensive. The owner (Bridgette) was very nice seating us and we had a great time chatting with her after our meal was over about restaurants in San Fran. She also advised against ordering more food than we did by saying "too much food, too much" when she could have just "sold us" more. We noticed this. The good was wonderful and quite tasty and actually in many ways much better than Melting Pot. The fondue is cooked "old style" on a true fondue rig with a sterno which was very cool and like we did it when growing up :) The good was incredible, and the service was top notch and VERY friendly. We were the last ones there and were assured we were not holding them up and instead we had a great conversation with Bridgette and another person working there on suggested restaurants while we were visiting San Fran (some we actually loved). All in all this was a terrific meal for us and if you enjoy fondue it is a can't miss and more authentic than Melting Pot. We would definitely visit again!

Fondue is a tradition and this place was perfect!! If you are a cheese fondue lover, this place is a hidden gem. We did not try to oil based fondue. I can't wait to go back!

Its a cute restaurant with only fondue. Helpful staff and the chocolate fondue was to die for. The prices was good as well.

As a native Swiss, I make it a point of pride to visit Swiss restaurants in other countries. Since I happened to be spending my birthday in San Francisco this year, I knew this would be a fun place to celebrate with friends. And it is! The decor is quintessential Swiss, with an alphorn, Swiss carnival masks, and maps on the walls. There's Swiss music playing, softly enough that you can easily hold a conversation without having to scream across the table. The restaurant was about half full when we were there on a Saturday night, which worked in our favor. Service was prompt and helpful. Our table ordered both meat and cheese fondues. Keep in mind fondue is really heavy, so yes, even though it's "just bread and cheese," you'll probably fill up pretty quickly. Cheese-wise, we had the half-and-half (half-gruyère and half-emmenthal), the "healthy" option (with herbs), and the smoky cheese. They have way more cheese options than you'd find in an actual fondue restaurant in Switzerland! All were good, though I'd personally recommend the half-and-half if you're just looking for one option to try. You can also order sides of mushrooms and apples to dip in the cheese along with the bread. The apples in particular are a tasty option. I'd recommend this place for a good social gathering or group of friends. It might be a little quiet for a date or smaller gathering, but certainly rest assured the food, decor, and service are terrific, and great for getting just a little bit of Swiss culture without leaving San Francisco!

This is a wonderful option for more Authentic Swiss fare than going to the melting pot, etc. The Fondue was out of this world, and they even have Raclette on the menu (they heat it for you - you do not do it on the machiene yourself). The owners are really from Switzerland, and the Mrs. actually takes your order and oversees the restauraunt. Tip: If you are a cheese addict like me, you will not be disappointed!

This is a very traditional Swiss fondue spot. Super clean, and very traditional atmosphere. The owners and staff are very nice and remember us because we make it a regular spot. It is a very nice reprieve from the trendy, noisy San Francisco dining scene. We probably go here more than any other spot in the city.

Love the beef fondue - I think it's the bachus plate. The wine is excellent

This is not the current trend of noisy tapas or California cuisine in San Francisco, and is a welcome break. The cheese fondue is very good, and they have some of the stronger cheeses. The restaurant is very quiet so you can actually hold a conversation, unlike so many places today.

I was walking is San Francisco, i have never tasted a Fondue before so i decided to try it, the place is very nice, clean and quiet, not very crowded. The employees are very nice, and most important the Fondue is super delicious, this is my first time and i love it.

With some mediocre Fondue places in the Bay Area we were drawn to this unique and charming chalet on Van Ness Avenue. Tasty cheeses and a great wine list, the perfect night out... Yodel, yodel, yodel

Amazing fondue - especially "The Spicy One." Very good wine selection also.

Great food, great wines, wonderful service. A friend and I dined on the 'Original' fondue after a lovely, bright salad. We had dried meats with the fondue. Then we went on to a beef fondue in a red wine broth. The accompaniments were many and delicious. Great sauces, with too many little dishes to name. We had a bottle and a half of a fabulous Sancerre, then finished up with an exquisite strudel. In a gorgeous, wood paneled room with wood booths - very comfortable and a genuine find. Don't miss it!

Now, I've had a fair few fondues in my time, as has my cheese-addicted girlfriend, and I can safely say that this was the best fondue we've ever had. It was sooooo good we both ate ourselves into varying degrees of pain, just because we didn't want to stop. The owner who was also our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable, and genuinely Swiss, so what we got was genuine Swiss fondue (though probably American-sized portions). The beers they had on tap were great, and the place itself was really nice. The only problem we had was the woman on the table next to us, who wouldn't stop talking about herself to her date. It was actually quite entertaining laughing about her afterwards, and obviously nothing to do with the restaurant - but she'll definitely help me remember this meal. I can still hear her now, like some kind of inescapable, self-centered tinnitus. Anyway, back on topic...it was one of the more expensive places we tried in SF, and there are probably better culinary experiences out there, but we really enjoyed this place.

Fantastic atmosphere and staff, and one of the only places in SF to get fondue! Can't wait to go back!

we found this place as we walked by it on our way to catch a bus. the sign in front said that it opens at 5 pm. we showed up at 8:30 - on a thursday - and were turned away. the hostess said that they took their last order at 8 pm. this did not appear on the sign, so i presume that you can not expect them to remain open very long if it is a slow night. the rest of the neighborhood restaurants were experiencing peak time. what's up with this?

Our family had a wonderful experience at the Matterhorn Restaurant in San Francisco: Excellent food, charming decor and very attentive service. We ordered the traditional cheese fondue, as well as the beef fondue (Chinoise), and both were excellent. For dessert, we enjoyed the chocolate fondue, which was simply delightful. Over the years, this restaurant has become one of our favorite destinations in the city, for birthdays, anniversaries and family outings. We recommend enthusiastically!

It's fondue - wine list not great

If you enjoy being the only party in a restaurant, this place is perfect. The interior looks like something out of a B movie set - the restaurant has all kinds of Swiss decorations; a giant Alphorn on the wall, masks of demons to scare away the snow, wooden tables and hard wooden chairs... The one thing it does not have is customers. Another thing missing is a chef. The restaurant website warns that "All dishes may not be available at all times" - this is because they do not have a regular chef. The only dish always available is fondue. To make fondue, there is no need for a chef; cut up bread, throw oil or cheese into a pot, and serve. The fondue is tasty, but eating here is creepy due to the emptiness of the restaurant. The service is adequate... it is difficult to imagine bad service when you are the only table in the restaurant.

A typical Swiss restaurant with wooden furniture and Swiss music in the background. I was looking for Wienerschnitzel but was told they did only serv Fondue and recommended me to go to the Austrian restaurant nearby. But the staff asked the chef if there was a schnitzel available and it was. This is a Swiss restaurant so you will have the schnitzel the Swiss way. Two pieces with rosted potatoes and roasted veggies and sprout. The schnitzel is made of veal, expensier but much better than pork. No need for appetizer and dessert. Very good dark beer "vom fass".

This restaurant strives to give its customers a true Swiss expierence, and it does every time. My husband and I go every time we visit the Bay Area and it is consistantly delicious. The cheese fondue is delicious and we always get the beef bourginion because it is a traditional favorite. Try the swiss wines too, they are a very good pairing.

Fondue, come on, who doesn't love dipping stuff in melted cheese?

We were really excited to finally try Matterhorn’s menu. We got their around 6:15 and it was pretty dead. The menu is what you would expect with different types of fondue and appetizers. The waitress was polite, made a recommendation for what we might try and so we ordered! At the beginning service was great and we ordered quite a bit, but after pouring our wine and delivering the food, the service went quickly downhill. We had to pour our own wine after that first glass, flagged someone for water and additional bread. It was disappointing. We learned later that the restaurant was planning on closing in the next month, so that may explain the limited bar and maybe general lack of enthusiasm.

Dude! Fondue!

A nice location walking distance from our hotel Comfort Inn By The Bay. Food was nice. Setting was authentic.

We visited this place as a group of German , Austrian and Swiss, knowing kind of what we'd get In case you haven't been to Switzerland go for it, this is probably as good as it can get in SF the interior will make defiantly look like you're somewhere in Switzerland Nevertheless, service in our case wasn't good at all, quality of food was okay, but not near what we wanted it to be, but to be fair, some quality things aren't as easy to get in SF One. Ore thing, in case you've made an opentable reservation they'd would let you chose only a few things from a different menu so call for a reservation to get the full menu offered

Cute place for fondue. The atmosphere is really fun.

This is one of my all-time favorite fondue restaurants. It is also on my must-go list whenever I am in San Francisco. The place is run by a married couple - has been for many many years. She is Swiss - incredibly lovely and friendly couple. Check out the huge map on the back wall. Very cool!

We went to this restaurant while on a family vacation in San Francisco. There were 6 of us and we ordered 3 fondues. Due to the small portions, we needed to order a second cheese fondue. The second cheese fondue tasted like cardboard. The only good fondue they had was the Chinoise....and the bill was nearly $400 including 2 bottles of wine. $25 PER PERSON for each pot of fondue is beyond ridiculous.

Food terrible and expensive. Hosted a family dinner for Fondu. The Fondu was inedible with alcohol so saturated that the kids got tipsy. The staff said it would take it back to burn it off but was still inedible. No fresh vegetables to dip, all were pickled and limp. Dinner over $300 for a family of 6. I will never go back. Ambiance charming.

OMG...this has never happened to us before. We went here w/friends from Switzerland had Fondue, Wine and Coffee---party of 4 and spent over $140...After dinner and having coffee we had "the guts" to sit for another 10 minutes to chat, like you usually do in Europe. Actually usually you sit for another hour to chat and nobody says a word! Well not here. All of a sudden after taking our "money" the owner comes to us and basically "kicks us out", saying "I need this table, could you sit at the bar!" It wasn't a question, it was an order, UNBELIEVABLE!!!! I am so disappointed! The food was okay, the servers were nice, but come on, Madame Owner, what was your problem? There were no people waiting and we were no rowdies either! Maybe Madame Owner had a bad night.... I would just like to point out, that the German server we had was great (I would give her 5 stars,). Germany - Switzerland 5-1

My wife and I heard about the re-opening this restaurant called the Matterhorn. We live in the Bay are and yesterday we planned our visit to Union square to experience all the pre-Christmas activities in the city. We made table reservations through the open table app and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The onion soup hot and great tasting. The meat from Beef fondue melted in your mouth as the meat is spiced & aged so super great tasting. There's even Swiss white & red wines to choose from. The people so friendly and attentive. Olivier & Dario are both from the Valais so you can ask anything about Switzerland you want to know. The interior and decor is originally shipped from Switzerland so you get a real authentic Swiss experience. Plus there is even a miniature Swiss train running in the back. For the intimate you can even eat in a gondola carriage and feel you are in the air. And on top it off all - the bill was very reasonable for a San Francisco restaurant.

If it wasn't for the stylish sign on the outside of an otherwise very ordinary looking apartment building, you'd never guess that this restaurant is located here. It's in the back, and you have to follow a corridor to get there. But once you enter, it's like a place shift effect: you're in a fairly authentic looking Swiss restaurant. We've been to many restaurants in Switzerland, and the look and atmosphere is well duplicated at The Matterhorn Swiss Restaurant. We were a bit misled at first by the menu displayed on the sidewalk. It showed fondue as well as many other Swiss dishes available. However, when we sat down, we were handed a fondue-only menu. It turns out that fondue options were the only thing offered that night. I don't know if this is the case every Friday night, or just on that particular Friday. If you're not a fan of fondue, then you should call ahead to confirm what's on the menu on the night you'd like to visit. After this early confusion, we ordered our fondue selections and had a nice chat with the manager (owner?). That's a contrast from the other wait staff that we interacted with, who were bland and character less, although friendly enough. The feeling of authenticity was reinforced when the food arrived at the table. The fondues that we ordered were delicious, as well as the add-ons such as mushrooms and sausage once these were cooked for a while in the melted cheese. The ingredients in both our selections differed substantially, so that we each had our favorite. The highlight of the meal, however, was the desert that we ordered in celebration of our younger son's birthday. It was a mouth-watering combination of Apple Strudel and vanilla ice cream. Of course nothing will replace the culinary delights of a top tier restaurant in Switzerland, but The Matterhorn Swiss in San Francisco is a worthy alternative.

We had a date here on a Friday night. From the Matterhorn website we had an idea of the traditional and innovative fondue choices. The first pleasant surprise was valet parking which, at $10, is a great value for the upscale neighborhood. The waitress was very helpful in advising us on a cordial and cocktail before the dinner and then helping us decide whether to choose the Highlander or the Smoky Fondue. We chose the Highlander (and will try the Smoky when we return!) and it was tangy with a "dram" of kirsch. The consistency was just right, bubbling and it coated the bread easily. Rosa had a glass of French Gewurz and I had a glass of Swiss Provins, which complemented the fondue. Salad had a palate-sharpening vinaigrette which I wish they would bottle and sell. Next time I want to try the Smokey, then the original. Wall St. Journal says Half and Half is gaining popularity in Geneva BTW. We would have stayed for dessert but that night there was road work on the approach to the Golden Gate. The owner told me when I was making the reservation that we could take 19th Avenue, an alternate approach that we didn't know about, and this enabled us to relax more and enjoy our dinner. If you like Swiss travel posters, wood paneling with carving, carved chairs, pretty Alpine paintings and flowers on the tables, this is a fine place for a romantic date for a couple, and there were groups of 3, 4 and 6 as well early on a Friday night. They've got Oban single malt Scotch, which is getting harder to find, and that is a wonderful peaty flavor go with the cheeses. Since they're innovative they might consider sourdough bread along with sweet French bread as a bread choice, but they already offer sausage and apples as dipping choices. Fun place, professionally run, and good value.

If you haven’t “done” fondue in a while, time to try this charming bit of Switzerland on Van Ness. I’m told this was an institution, new owners have taken over. It’s bright & just the right amount of kitsch. The code for the bathroom... The main event is of course the fondue. We tried one cheese, one meat. We went for the more traditional, flavorful emmentaler. Gorgeous. I was expecting the meat fondue to be that super dangerous version were you kind of have to fry it in the fat on the table in front of you, but instead it was super tender meat ready for us to dunk in a beautiful broth. We ordered two portions of each for 4 and were stuffed. The fondues came with bread and amazing pickled vegetables. Because we’re insane we ordered the s’mores dessert fondue, which arrived with fruit & little cookies to scoop up the melted chocolate & marshmallows. Beautiful wine, charming service. Table for two could be in their vintage ski car...

We have been to the Matterhorn about 6 times and we always really like the food. We also appreciate the Swiss “alpine” decor. We went there on Friday to celebrate my birthday with my wife and cousins. We had a reservation for 7:45 and when we walked in we were the only ones there (and all evening!). This was surprising since every other time we’ve been there it was very busy. The food and service was excellent as usual. The cheese and chinois fondues were delicious. We ordered the chocolate fondue as a dessert - which was delicious as well. However, we all liked the marshmallows with the chocolate the best so we quickly ran out. I asked the owner (who we’ve met before) for more marshmallows. She said “no problem but I would need to charge you”. Uh, what? We are the only patrons in the restaurant, we spent $150 and you want to charge us for .25 worth of marshmallows?!? My family, who had never been here before, were mortified. Needless to say this left us with a “bad taste” after what had been a great evening. I realize that in the big scheme of things this isn’t a big deal, but on the other hand we felt she was being completely unreasonable and damaged what had been a great experience (and dining relationship). I have no doubt the owner believes she was right, but if she had looked around and saw that we saved them from having no business for the night, she could have been more accommodating. Very poor customer service in our opinion.

The Matterhorn Restaurant is located right off Van Ness. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. You go in what looks like an office building and walk to the back to get to the restaurant. Once inside, you will be transported to the Swiss German part of lovely Switzerland. The service is outstanding. It is always a good sign when the person who greets and seats you is actually from Switzerland. She was great fun to talk to and has a wonderful personality and sense of humor. Of course, the food is fondue in all of its glory. They offer three meat versions and multiple versions of cheese. We sampled both. For the meat, they have the Chinoise version (in broth), the Bourguignonne version (in oil), and the Bacchus version (in broth with red wine). We chose the Bourguignonne for the meat and the half and half for the cheese. We started the meal with some dried meats. This is the authentic way to start the fondue meal. The platter was nicely served and delicious and recommended but it was the least authentic Swiss thing about the evening. It was more like something you would get in Italy. The fondue dishes come with a salad. It is small and very tasty with a great dressing. The night we were there, it included some pomegranate which was a nice touch. The beef fondue was outstanding and served with really nice sauces and small side dishes. We loved the artichokes (in lemon oil). The cheese fondue was good – 4 stars. Much better than what you get in those chain fondue spots but not quite exactly like what you get in Switzerland. It was good enough that we would definitely have it again. Swiss wine is absolutely amazing. Americans don’t usually know much about it because it isn’t widely available in the US. It is mostly made in small vineyards and consumed in Switzerland. We like Swiss wine as much or more as any wines we have had anywhere in the world. Especially the whites. And it is a must to drink white wine with cheese fondue. The Matterhorn had a great selection of Swiss wine the night we were there. The atmosphere is very authentic Swiss German. We have been to many spots that look just like this throughout Switzerland. We loved everything about the place and highly recommend it to you. This is a real treat for a special occasion or just for a great dinner with family or friends. The price is very fair for what you get. We will definitely be back. Soon.

My husband and I had dinner here tonight and I am so glad we decided to 'check the menu' What a great meal, service and experience- wow! The venue makes you feel like your in Switzerland and the staff super friendly, the cheese and beef fondue to die for. Thank you for a great evening

I don't know how I only recently found out about this place! We dined here as a group to celebrate a birthday and we were impressed! High quality cheese in the fondue, delicious bread, salad with very fresh greens, oil fondue with chunks of beef and pork, huge variety of sauces for the meat and various other accompaniments. Service was solid and they have a very reasonable wine list. It really is a gem and would suit a variety of occasions. Matterhorn is definitely going on our regular rotation!

This was something different for a change. I don't think I could handle a steady diet of fondue but everything was very tasty.

Come hungry! Amazing food and drinks in an Alpine setting. Service is impeccable with plenty of options on the menu. Fondue-focused cuisine with wines, specialty cocktails, and a full bar. You may even get to eat inside the gondola (if your party is two… not sure of the official limit).

Had dinner here on a Saturday evening. The restaurant is cozy. Very friendly staff. The wine list is good and very reasonably priced. The food is expensive, but well worth it! Excellent food and fun! Can't wait to go back!

This was my second time at the Matterhorn and the food does not disappoint. Both times, however, the service has been lacking. The server treated our family like he was slightly disappointed we had shown up while he showered the neighboring table with charm. Don’t know what was up with that, but it was not as cute as the Swiss chalet vibes and the excellent food.

Not nearly as good as it was with previous owners. Overpriced for sure. A lot of extra charges on sides and sauces that should be included in a traditional Swiss meal.

We happened upon this restaurant and were so pleasantly surprised with the wonderful meal and friendliness of the staff. We would highly recommend this restaurant to our friends. Excellent swiss cuisine.

This was our 4th visit in ten years. The other three visits were four star experiences. I would give this a minus star if it was possible . We were seated in an alcove with three other tables, one of which was covered with dirty dishes, used silverware, and a napkin on the floor, under the table......during our entire meal. Mid way thru our meal, the diners on our other side finished and left..........their used dishes, silverware, and napkins stared at us for the rest of our meal. The waiter seemed to have an attitude.....not friendly at all. She forget 1/2 our main order, then asked if we still wanted it??? We ordered the fondue......certain items need to be brought to the table at, or close to the same time. We had an inordinately long wait between some items tht should have arrived simultaneously. Several times the servers looked our way from across the room.....as if checking on us.....but never explained the delays or made any effort to get our order to us.My daughter asked for a refill for two of the teeny weeny condiment containers. The waiter never mentioned it would b $5.00 per dish to refill. Waitress brought the bill, put it on the table and walked away without a word. We were never rude, never made unreasonable requests, and never complained about the horrible service or the uneven quality of the food. Our bill was $140. for the two of us. We won't be back......

We have been going to this place for the last 10 years or so, and now that we have moved, we get to it less frequently, but it has consistently good fondue. We really like the Chinois, and with some wine, or the dark beer, it is a great dining experience. Don't forget to have some of their great strudel for desert. We highly recommend this place.

Having worked in the Suisse I found his to be a great find in SF, the fondue being quite genuine and I especially liked the raclette, not commonly available in the U.S. Fondue is a lovely communal experience, not the most low cal but worth the occasional indulgence. The waiters definitely not Swiss but very attentive.

fondu.....

great for a group. Who doesn't love fondue?

Fun and retro spot for genuine Swiss cuisine and fondue. Great for groups. Can be lively. Small but interesting wine list.

Started with the onion soup, it was good and the cheese topping was excellent. Hefeweizen on tap was fresh and tasty. We had the Veal Zurich Style and the Pork Schnitzel, both were great. S'more fodue for dessert was the perfect end to the meal. Friendly service and a fun ambience. We'll be back.

good, but overpriced

Stars of our delicious meal were the onion soup and the chocolate fondue! The Matterhorn authentically recreates a Swiss visit from the artistic front door to the Switzerland-scenic model train layout in the back. Well worth repeat visits for casual to festive occasions!

1) Alpine Board was OK but skimpy for the money 2) The onion soup was good but again a small portion for the money 3) the Schnitzel was uneatable and I should have refused it...terribly overcooked. 4) Environment was convivial. Overall: Bearing in mind I did not have the fondue, I would rate this as a major disappointment. Can't recommend it. Overrated.

Over the years I have enjoyed fondue at home, at restaurants in Switzerland, Boston, NYC, Montreal, Quebec City and now San Francisco. The fondue at the Matterhorn Swiss Restaurant is as good as it gets. If you like fondue, it is impossible not to like this fondue. The "Original" has a lovely consistency and structure. The bread is fresh and a perfect compliment. We added a side of Granny Smith apples and fresh crimini mushrooms - both worked well in the fondue (let the mushrooms cook a bit in the fondue). We were greeted warmly by what I assume was the wife of the husband & wife ownership team. She took our order and appropriately oversaw our meal. The starter salad with fresh beets was excellent. The wine list was adequate and fairly priced. The New Zealand Pinot Noir worked well with the fondue. The customers were a varied lot. Singles, families with infants, couples and small groups. The not overly done swiss decor is also a plus. I hope to return on my next visit to SF.

I don't hand out too many four stars but Matterhorn is deserving. My review is based on the food, the ambience, the service, and the value. The food is simply amazing. We were a party of seven adults and two kids. We had two cheese and two meat fondues. The meal started with a fresh green salad that had a delicious, tangy house made dressing. This was the only thing that came out individually. Everything else was 'family style'. Then they brought out six or seven little side dishes of exquisitely prepared morsels like olives, kiwis, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, and cornichons. Finally, the fondue came and it was just like we had in Switzerland! The ambience was exactly like a restaurant you'd find in Switzerland, from the tables and benches to the decor and soft alpine folk music in the background. The owner is very personable and friendly, her Swiss accent lending authenticity to Matterhorn's origins. The service was timely and friendly. It was attentive without being intrusive. The value. Well, it wasn't cheap to eat here. For all of the above we paid roughly $35 per person, plus tip. Was it worth it? We all agreed it was well worth the price and that we'd be back again. Finally, if you found this or any of my Reviews helpul, please feel free to click the YES tab below, thanks :)

Our family has been going to the Matterhorn for nearly 20 years and we have always had a wonderful time. While we usually have the excellent fondues, we also often sample the other Swiss specialties, especially the Wienerschnitzle and rosti potatoes. We also always have a bottle of wine from the excellent wine list. The atmosphere and cuisine are authentically Swiss, and the service is swift and very friendly. You will be met at the door by Brigitte who with her husband, the chef, own the restaurant. Their care shows in every detail of the operation; it runs like a Swiss watch. I highly recomment Matterhorn for both locals and visitors to San Francisco for its consistently excellent Swiss cuisine and friendly atmosphere. Kids really love the fodue and that makes this a expecally great family restaurant.

Went here on a whim, craving gooey and delicious fondue. Was really pleased by our experience. While the decor was a bit throwback and kitschy, it's a pretty accurate rendition of what a restaurant in small-town Switzerland is still like today (I go back once a year). The service was friendly and efficient, and the food was wonderful. The fondue was surprisingly lighter than we expected, with lots of flavor. We added the Alpine Delight, because what meal isn't better with cold cuts? A few Swiss draft beers and we ended up satiated and quite happy, all for under $100.

This is the truly authentic Swiss Fondue restaurant in San Francisco. It is family owned and operated, with Bridgette running the front of house and her husband overseeing the kitchen. If you arrive early in the evening, you have the benefit of a wide ranging Swiss menu, truly superb. It is worth your while to try to get their before 6:30 and ask for the Swiss menu. After that time, the chef focuses exclusively on fondue. There are a variety of cheese fondues. For the most part, two people need to choose the same fondue. However, there is a classic cheese fondue that can be ordered for one person. If your preference is for beef fondue, there are options depending upon the type of liquid in which you want the beef to be cooked. All come with an incredible number of sauces and accompaniments. The meal comes with salad and soup. The soups are particularly good. The wine list is wonderful -- Bridgette rightfully prides herself on her wine knowledge. The ambiance is one of the best qualities. It brings to mind a wonderful Alpine home. There are so many good restaurant choices in San Francisco. And Matterhorn is not in the downtown area. But it is a San Francisco treasure. If you are in town, do not miss it.

A true swiss restaurant with true swiss quality food. If it's a traditional fondue or a beef steak. Absolutely delicious. The swiss owners keep the quality up at a top level. Simply delicious!

The menu is limited but good quality of choices for singles. Excellent menu choices for couples. I had the Wienerschnitzel. It was very good but a little dry. The rossi potatoes were delicious but not inspiring. The Red Cabbage was excellent. I had an excellent German beer with the meal and it was a perfect match. The Restaurant is a quiet, pleasant place but a bit too tables were a little too crowded for me to call it REALLY Romantic. A few less tables separated more would have been better. However it could still be a nice place to take a date. The Restaurant apparently is well known for their fondue, however that is not my favorite, so I didn't try it and can't comment on it. A good selection of beers and wines and a nice bar is available as well. The restaurant was clean and well kept. I went on a Thursday evening and it was very empty, but even though few people were there the service was VERY slow. Cost high $20's-low $30's per person.

YUM, YUM, YUM, bring on the cheese and chocolate!

Close to our hotel and with an interesting menu. We ate Veal Zurich style and Berner Rosti. Both were substantial and filling. Friendly service.

Stepping into the restaurant was like traveling to Europe. Wooden walls and tasteful decoration (not at all minimalist - very, very European). We were four people, and we ordered a raclette for one and a cured meat plate as appetizers and then the "original" fondue for 3 people. The portions were more than enough, but the flavors were absolutely delicious. Having a Swiss dad, we have been to more Swiss restaurants than I can remember, but this one is definitely one for the books. The raclette was perfectly done, gooey on some parts and crunchy on others. The fondue was excellent, especially if you like strong cheeses. The dessert, their take on creme brûlée, was the perfect ending for an amazing meal. Aside from the amazing food, the service was absolutely top notch. Our server was kind, attentive and always one step ahead of us in bringing a fresh bread basket for the fondue. A second server who brought out the food and helped clear the dishes was also very attentive. I can honestly say they were two of the best servers I've ever had in a long time. The owner, who also came by our table, was a delight. We enjoyed a brief conversation at the end of our meal, but she was so friendly that it almost felt like she was part of our dinner party. All in all, the best swiss restaurant I've been to in the US.

Excellent food. This is my second visit and it was just as good as my first. The staff is welcoming and friendly, and the food is absolutely amazing. This is one of my top favorite restaurants in California and quite possibly anywhere. The fondue can be customized with various items, and be sure to leave room for desert. There’s a model train and Swiss village towards the back, with tables right next to it (train and village are through a window) and there’s the gondola up front which seats two (but not for people too tall), both spaces offering an even further unique setting within an already unique restaurant. I will be back!

An incredible fondue dinner here last night. This place exceeded my expectations entirely. Also had the great salad as an appetizer. The service was also A+, really perfect in tempo, tone and dining recommendations. I can't think of a single negative to comment on frankly. So glad Matterhorn re-opened and are part of the neighborhood (I'm local). Will be back!
Swiss food
My friend and I shared a fondu with cheese and herbs. It was very good, the side salad was good. We went for the extras of apple, sausage, and mushrooms everything was very good tasting.
