Welcoming staff, delicious brunch and beautiful atmosphere

By Michella C |

We came for the weekend brunch and had a stellar experience. First off all of the staff was very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was delicious (is an understatement) we ordered the biscuits, French toast and fried chicken eggs Benedict. We sat inside by the window and enjoyed the atmosphere of original charm of the house. I appreciated reading the story of the family that lived there and their daughter Mary who started entertaining and cooking for guests. I think they have done an incredible job keeping with the original idea of Green Pastures!

Beautiful setting

By Hawkeye1947 |

The building is historical and the grounds give a sense of the Old South. The food was very good but the service was SLOW!

Poor customer experience

By nsumant |

Good coffee. We had an outside seating at 1145 and it was too hot. No one was outside so we asked for a shaded area and were told no. Overall were not friendly in the front and snooty They seated us at the breakfast bar. It was a special birthday for us and made us feel bad.

Easter Brunch

By Judy J |

I was looking forward to Easter Brunch at the beautiful place I had visited years ago. After building up the fabulous place and food to my husband we were excited for our visit. The grounds were beautiful and the peacocks were strutting their stuff. After being seated at a corner window with view we were presented with a very disappointing menu. I did not expect the bountiful Brunch had enjoyed before due to COVID but I was highly disappointed in the minimal menu, Breakfast platter of bacon and eggs or sausage, a couple of other Breakfast choices and a Shrimp and grain bowl which was basically a green salad with 3 grilled shrimp for $24 . Oh there was a hamburger as a entree. I don't know where the menus you see featured online were. It was a rather disappointing Easter Brunch but thank you to the peacocks...they saved the day.

Extremely overpriced Christmas buffett

By Lindarene |

Way too much to go into here but if you are looking for a nice holiday meal, this isn't the place. Very few choices, all the atmosphere of a high school gymnasium and perfunctory service at best (but make sure you note that automatic 18% gratuity!) Very disappointing Christmas dinner and priced in the triple digits (per person, after tax and tip), it was egregiously overpriced. Make plans to go somewhere--anywhere--else for your holiday buffet.

Easter brunch disappointing!

By emelguizo |

My family and I have attended Easter Brunch for the last six years except for last year because it was closed, The food, service, music and overall ambiance left a lot to be desired. It was not charming and elegant as it used to be. We will not be returning next year! Enrique M.

Excellen food, service and ambiance

By cosmotron |

Mattie's had been on my list since it's (re)opening, so we finally headed over to celebrate my birthday. Indeed the indoor space was beautiful, and we were seated by one of the windows on the first floor, overlooking the front space outside while the band was setting up. Service was excellent, from the maitre d' to our server and the other support staff (who came with our food or drinks) - they were all very attentive. We started with buttermilk biscuits with guava butter and honey, and BBQ shrimp and grits - delicious and so flavorful! I tried one of their non-alcoholic concoctions (something with subtle grapefruit, ginger...?), which was pretty tasty, but I had expected a larger vessel, definitely not a tiny champagne coupe, for that drink. Our main entrees were the fried chicken and pan-seared red trout. Both were amazing, but my husband certainly favored my dish more since all elements worked very well together. There was no room for dessert, though :) Staff were so accommodating and shared the history of the property and encouraged us to wander the premises. After dinner, we checked out the remainder of the first floor, then up to the second. Our server ran into us as we were checking out photos on the walls and escorted us to the banquet room (where brunch used to be served). We found Chef Josh Thomas seated in his uniform, going over menus; we tried not to disturb him as we looked around - he was really nice and welcoming. Yes, the property was beautiful, the building has been exquisitely renovated, but the food really stood out and staff were trained quite well! Let's just say, by the time we left, we were already planning our next visit.

Not worth it

Beautiful location with good food at expensive prices served by glacially slow, incompetent, and surly staff.

Decadent delicious beautiful

By jposttx |

Overall We showed up on a late Sunday morning and were able to get a table in about 1/2 hour. While we waited we toured the grounds - wow - gorgeous. It looked like 3 sepperate events were being staged in addition to the restaurant running. Parking was full and kind of random and unmarked but fine. The meal Great appetizer - great silverware - wonderful presentation and service. Really strong first impression. We got coffee and the pimento cheese with toast to start. Great choice and very tasty and sized right for 3 adults. Vegetable Frittata, 'eggs Benedict gone Texas' , and bananas foster waffles. Lordt! The Frittata was fine but the other 2 meals just shown so brightly ! Yeeeehaw. We shared everything and was so happy we did - not cheap but come on y'all it was a special occasion. Will do this again. Nice service nothing special but over all very competent. Food quality and presentation was excellent. Table setup dishes glasses silverware all matched the price point. Strongly recommend you come try this.

Perfect Brunch

By Kyle G |

This place is amazing! Gorgeous grounds, delicious food, and amazing service. The food and service alone make it worth it, but the interior of the house, and the grounds make this one of the best places I have been to in TX. We will definitely return on our next trip to the Austin area!

A Classic Old Austin Venue

By Todd787 |

The Green Pastures is in a South Austin Farm House built in 1916, opened to the public as an elegant restaurant in 1946 and has been an Austin tradition of fine dining ever since. In 2017 the entire restaurant was closed for a much-needed makeover. This was our first visit since the reopening. A front dining room was repurposed as a bar. The before dinner drinks were fine, but the ambiance and the service still needed a little refining. As for dinner we had the Buttermilk Biscuits (very good), the Bibb Wedge (excellent) and Farmhouse Salad, the Roasted Chicken and the Countryside Farm Duck. All were very good, but still lacked that special touch that such a stunning setting deserves. The Green Pasture house and grounds are truly spectacular and still a favorite for weddings, graduations and special events.

Enjoyable dinner in a peaceful setting

By Elizabeth L |

This is so close to downtown in such a sereine and peaceful setting. Four of us and a toddler had an early dinner outside, and it was a very enjoyable experience. Most of our food was very tasty. We started with four appetizers — the beets, cauliflowers, pretzel pieces and duck mousse followed by two chicken dishes, one rib dish and the vegetarian option. We ended our meal with the strawberry mousse and bread pudding. The desserts were tasty but small. Our waiter was pleasant and well trained. We heard about this place for quite a while now, and I am happy we made it there. P.S. We saw two beautiful peacocks during our meal

Dinner with daughter

By Peter F |

Okay, I'm a little prejudiced when it comes to this review. My daughter works the kitchen at Mattie's, so she arranged a dinner there on a Saturday night. Though she doesn't know all of the wait staff up front, everyone of them was over the top nice and helpful. We even had the general manager come out and introduce himself. The grounds are beautiful, the lighting inside and outside was very nice, and the food was incredible. Would love to go again next time I am in the area. Austin is an amazing city for foodies; consider Mattie's being on your list of places to try.

Every detail was perfect

By Candytxn |

I chose Mattie’s, for my granddaughter's high school graduation luncheon. The Table Royal Room held 16 people very comfortably and it was charming and secluded. The food was delicious, with a custom menu offering appetizers, three entree choices, beverages and desserts. The service was impeccable. All of this fit my budget perfectly. The grounds were beautiful for photographs, and the girls loved the peacocks! The event was perfect in every way. I would not have changed a thing.

Lovely dinner under the huge live oak trees

By Pamiruru |

It was a special evening, our 35th anniversary and what better spot to enjoy it. You get a feel of living in another era and time. Peacocks roam the lawn as it is their home and roost in the trees just as you are about to have dessert. The food was as good as the atmosphere.

Fantastic

By Faith T |

First let me say I've been in Texas for a week, and this is the second best meal I've had. The brunch was amazing, great presentation, great drinks and one of the best views I've seen in awhile. Just wish I could move this whole place to Nashville. Its diffantly not a tourist place, you have to be looking for great food and great ambience. Please look at their website and go to this great place. ❤❤❤❤

Bday dinner with peacocks

By boatwaco |

My wife and I enjoyed her birthday dinner at Mattie's, although we had a couple of glitches. Food - excellent Ambiance- excellent - we sat outside on te old wrap around porch. From there we could watch the peacocks emerge and wander up into one of the huge oak tree's branches. Really nice and special to experience. Glitch - I order a local blue bed beer, was eventually brought a can of a cider drink, and when I said this is not what I ordered, the server poured it and asked me to try it anyway. I don't like cider... Eventually I got my draft blonde ale. Glitch - when pouring the cider, he also spilled a large amount of my wife's shoe. End of glitches. Try the biscuits - delicious! I loved the salmon, my wife loved her trout. Try Mattie's!

Southern Charm

By Hunt4game |

I took the Family for dinner after reading about the newly renovated space and updated menu. We certainly enjoyed it! Appetizers we're all good. Four of us split 3 entrees with 3 additional sides and it was a lot of food. Get the biscuits, you won't be sorry. They use local and high quality ingredients , which certainly shows in the flavors! Sitting outside with the old Live Oaks and peacocks in the yard is a treat.

Peacocks welcome here!

By LocalAdventures |

This place is an Austin must. It has a great southern menu and has the charm to match. The peacocks roaming the grounds is the cherry on top.

This place is pretentious, pretending to be sonethin it is not, AKA do no go.

By Hank M |

We started at the bar waiting for our reservation, attempting to order a beer. The guy next to me said "good luck". The beer-cocktail list is this cute little book with very small font; so I asked the server what is on draft. She showed me the beer on draft list and I said I'd try one on the list; she went to the little fridge and brought me a beer in a bottle. Ok, never mind, that bring me a Fireman's 4 (one the bottle list), but she couldn't find it. After some help from the bar tender, she found it in a can. We ordered dinner, The Signature Fried Chicken reccommended by the server and the Steak Frites which was supposed to be a sirloin with fries. The fried chicken was dull fried chicken and the sirloin didn't look like any sirloin I ever had, very tough and thin. The 'Frites' were so stale I couldn't stab them with my fork. I thought of sending the fries back, but my wife said, 'they're just fries' So we just enjoyed the sillyness of this place knowing we'd never be back. Oh and the acoustics are so bad, everyone in the place has to yell to be heard over the din. I wanted to give it one star, but it's not terrible just bad.

Awesome brunch spot

By Tara L. |

Went to Mattie’s with a friend for brunch while visiting Austin and was not disappointed. The restaurant is super cute and is set inside an old farm house, giving it an authentic southern feel. The food was delicious (made even better when paired with a Bloody Mary) — great spot for a bachelorette or Mother’s Day brunch.

not green pastures but still very pretty

By texastraveler361 |

We went on a sunday hoping for a green pasture brunch experience. Did not get it. The food is al la carte, not buffet. And it is very good, but a bit pricey. $95 for three of us. they have closed the banquet room and use it for private functions. the remainder is very nice, surrounded by the beautiful trees and peacocks. Unless you are put outside in the heat. the location is a few blocks off of south congress. very good staff.

A Wonderful Surprise After All These Years

By boudin |

Nearly 50 years ago, when my young bride and I were penniless, struggling students, our families would occasionally visit and take us out to the best restaurant in town, Green Pastures, home of Mary Faulk Koock, godmother of Texas cooking and the author of a very popular cookbook, The Texas Cookbook. Those were glorious times. Fast forward to yesterday, when we returned to this place filled with such sweet memories. We were naturally apprehensive about how time and new owners had treated what had been such a pleasant part of our youth. To our great relief, from the beginning of the evening, it was clear that this new manifestation of Green Pastures had not only kept alive the tradition of great southern cooking and gracious hospitality, but had actually improved upon it. The bartender made me a special cocktail for the sweltering day: gin, mint, cucumber, a little lime and soda-a perfect antidote for the heat wave, so refreshing that my daughter ordered one. Our meal: the kale salad, chicken pate, french fries and vegetable bowl were exceptionally good, but my favorite item was the fried chicken, the tastiest, moistest, tenderest fried chicken in memory. To top it off, the biscuits were the right complement: honey-tinged crust, perfectly baked. The musical background was created by a terrific blue grass trio who livened up the grounds with their talent. Mary Faulk Koock would have been so pleased to witness what has been done with her old place.

Anniversary disappointed- Don’t send Roses

By mike p |

Planned 3 weeks out for 10th Anniversary dinner....we had been married the same day 10 years ago at Green Pastures. Ordered roses and called Green Pastures at 3:30 to give details to have them at the table....called at 6 to see if we could come at 6:45 and was told no roses had arrived yet. At the end of dinner I finally asked waiter about them...a manager showed up with them...then said they had never got message...when I told her the front desk had changed the reservation to 6:45 and said roses had not yet arrived she was embarrassed and said she would check and get back with me ...she never did and two days later no answer to what happened...the food was good but lack of caring on the managers side was ....” oh well”—you know the old story—-you tell 2 who tell 2....I just expected more from Mattie’s ...curious if they respond

The finest meal in Austin.

By Joe S |

First, the property is beautiful. From the moment you drive up, until you enter the restaurant, everything is amazing. Lobster tempura was perfect. Filets cooked perfectly. Creme Brûlée was the best we have ever eaten. Emily, our server provided some of the best service we ever enjoyed.

Gimme ALL the brunch milk punch!

By Kevin L |

My fiancee has been wanting to try this place for a while now, and we finally made it together to celebrate her birthday. The brunch was priced at $38 - not sure if she ate $38 worth of food, but I sure did. Great spread - I think I counted seven different types of salads, a salmon situation, eggs Benedict, and a roast beef carver towards the end of the "help-yourself" buffet line. The desserts were decadent, and I enjoyed the creme brûlée, a chocolate chip cookie (not too soft & not too hard, just the way I like it), and a blondie brownie slice. DELICIOUS. However, the milk punch (Amy's vanilla ice cream, brandy, rum, and another liquor I cannot remember as I write this) was like a dessert between sips of coffee, and was included in the brunch price. (We may or may not have spooned some milk punch into our coffee....) SUPER tasty, especially for someone that has a large sweet tooth like myself, and I believe I had three glasses. MMMMMmmm GOOD! Great experience overall -- we will be back!

Change so far is not for the better

By DRip2014 |

Have been here on numerous occasions but this time the food is definitely slipping in quality. Even our waiter indicated they were putting less ingredients into their recipes to make everything more streamlined and updated rather than going to the trouble of preparation that made the old recipes taste great. Skimping on ingredients that make a food taste the best is no way to improve on old recipes. Even their selection of entrees seems to be down from what it was and the garden salad was not even noted which had been a winner for them on their menu for years. Again, before they were sold, a lot of the produce was grown on site. As we walked in with reservations, it was around 10 minutes before someone ventured out to seat us and another couple came in and had a longer wait than that. New owners need to address some of these concerns before they lose too many of their old customers.

All Around Great Experience

By BBVeniceFL |

Everything about this place is great. It's set on a large, quiet piece of property. The restaurant is in a grand old mansion, with many tables on the outside as well. The atmosphere is calm and classy. There are 2 bars to grab a cocktail while waiting for your table. The service is friendly and attentive. The menu is not extensive, however every dish is thoughtfully constructed. Everything is fresh and flavorful.

Ambiance wins

By Ashley R |

So I'll start with the good! The grounds and the restaurant are beautiful! The resident peacocks are an even better addition and the staff are lovely. The secondary area for happy hour was relaxing and rustic which bistro sitting and plenty of cute pups. Also, my drinks were tasty. The not so good: The food is ok... I had the $54 ribeye with Yukon masked potatoes and roasted veggies, which were just peppers (hot) and tomatoes. I was not impressed. The steak was described to me as similar to a Kobe, which made my expectations high. However, the same steak could have come from Texas Roadhouse and I wouldn't have known the difference sadly. Others at the table had the "roasted chicken" which surprisingly came with a layer of BBQ sauce when it was listed as " "natural jus". The only person truly pleased with their meal in our group had the fried chicken and cauliflower , so aim for that when you go. In short: I wanted to love this place but this is a great spot to enjoy the views for happy hour and then grab dinner somewhere else.

Outstanding dinner!

By Jay F |

Went to Mattie's for dinner. Started by ordering a bottle of Spanish Cava and an excellent smoked salmon tartar to share. For mains we had an excellent Basmati bowl and an outstanding roast cicken breast. Finished by sharing the best key lime pie I have had and a glass of Donnafugata Ben Rye dessert wine. Great service and a great meal. Highly recommended!

A Trip back to a Southern Plantation!

By holyblonde25 |

I went to this place when I visited Austin with some friends for a Sunday Brunch. While the menu is simple the food and quality is nothing, but the best. I highly recommend the Bacchus Pimm's Cup for a drink or the 1965 Milk Punch. The food is great! You can either eat outside or inside this house that reminds of an old Southern Plantation. What's a really great treat is that on the premise they have peacocks! One of the birds is an albino. The kids love it! Also, get the biscuits they are to die for here!! Great hidden gem right outside the city.

Client dinner , big success

By Todd N |

Arranged a private dinner upstairs in the lounge at the newly renovated Matties. Worked with Kate, their events coordinator who was awesome!!!! Menu choices were outstanding - with a few highlights - the crispy cauliflower (not your mom's cauliflower), farmhouse salad, the pomme puree, and the roasted chicken...all with outstanding service in a idyllic setting. Perfect space for about 20..any more would be a bit crowded. The website lacks photos, but if you call them they will gladly send you all the information you need for any kind of event. The best I can say is that the local Austin folks that attended thought that the renovations made were really outstanding. Band playing outside under the lights...wrap around porch...just be careful with directions...you could drive by easily as it is in a residential area that is undergoing a good deal of re-development, building.

Wonderful Peace in Town

By zepper50 |

Sitting in the middle of one of the many quaint South Austin neighborhoods sits the elegant Matties. We were there for a beautiful outside wedding. Parking within the grounds valet only. Off grounds free street parking available outside venue on city streets. Grounds peaceful and beautiful including the screaming peacocks. Service professional and friendly. Food and drinks very good. Outdoor wedding venue covered and wonderful. Highly recommend considering Mattie's for a wedding.

Birthday dinner

By travelerjane265 |

We went for my mother-in-law's 60th birthday. We loved the atmosphere - it's an old house that's been beautifully decorated, there were peacocks on the lawn and nice landscaping! And the food was great. My favorites (We had biscuits and fried green tomatoes as appetizers, and several things for dinner) were the biscuits and the fried chicken sandwich was delicious and also huge! I loved the cocktail I had, as well. Service was great and offered to split our check. Can't wait to go back!

Near perfection

By Ron T |

What this place does is amazing. Set in an old house, you feel you have stepped back in time. The lounge had great drinks and the restaurant had outstnading food. A bit pricey for Austin, but well worth it. We split fried green tomatoes and the Heirloom carrots to start-don't miss the carrots!! Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Chicken and Pork Tenderloin were all done so well. Service was attentive and they anticipated every need. Don't miss this place.

Second Time Around

By pfitzpatrick |

I last visited Mattie's in November 2017. It was good then and even better now, if that's possible. The food was excellent, but the dessert's were even better. If you go, save room for the desserts; the prices are excellent for the quality and size-portions that they deliver. We tried them all - ugh, I know - but I can tell you our favorites were the creme brule, carrot cake, and the orange puddin' cake. Plenty to choose from for all tastes, though. Enjoy!!

Beautiful and delicious southernesque food

By Justtryingrecipes |

We went for lunch and the menu had great options! The house is beautiful and the peacocks throughout the property are a nice touch 😜! There were so many delicious appetizers we couldn’t choose so we just got 4 and shared!

Gracious eating.

By lreynard |

A meal at Green Pastures is like stepping back in time. The high ceilings and creaking hardwood floors create an excellent ambiance. The menu, while not remotely avant guarde, can be counteed upon to be consistently good. The Sunday Brunch is great for families.

Amazing place and service. Food over priced

By Iggyxii |

The place is amazing. You really disconnect of the city and travel in time inside this Victorian house. Is a very fancy place. You will see white peacocks while you dine and the garden is beautiful. I did not like the food as much and thought it was expensive for the quality you get

Catered Wedding Party

By MontanaLaura |

Great Venue for a wedding party. He food was delicious and the help and wait staff were wonderful! We'd definitely hold an event here and recommend it to anyone that's honking of a classy place to do so 😊

Beautiful place to have brunch

By Kate M |

The food here could be more varied, but the atmosphere was amazing. There are peacocks wandering around the property which is very cool. One of the best bloody mary's I have ever had. Fantastic selection of wines/drinks. I just thought that the menu could have some more options as far as brunch/breakfast is concerned.

Fine Dining at Its Best...

By PirkoFamily |

Maybe I'm crazy, but I cannot disagree more with those who said this is a "disappointing" experience. Our waiter, Sean, was a joy. The property/ambiance are amazing... Them there's the food! The pate and the famed pimento cheese were fantastic! The garnishes for the pate were especially good...pickled onions and a fennel/apples chutney...wow. The duck hash and a kolache were just enough to compete our brunch. The milk punch was...just wow. Please come and enjoy this gem!!

Delicious food in a beautiful setting

By Judy M |

We had a lovely Sunday brunch with a large group. I was first stuck by the beauty of the old estate, complete with lovely gardens, peacocks and a long driveway leading up to the mansion. When we stepped inside, we were greeted by a friendly hostess who led us to our table. The dining areas are comfortably appointed with furniture fitting a home built in the 1800's. Everyone enjoyed their brunch and the menu was varied enough that everyone found something to their liking. Would definitely go again.

Lovely Place and Great Food

By mlonthego |

Beautiful old home and grounds. Mattie's farm to table food was delicious. Enjoyed the Idaho trout, greens and sweet potatoes. Excellent flavoring in each dish. Great service as well.

Delicious Food

By Elizabeth P |

Went here for a bridal shower. The venue is very nice and serene; even though its quite near downtown Austin. The food was excellent as was the service. The biscuits with honey and raspberry butter were to die for! Had the chocolate mouse for dessert...also divine.

An Austin Treasure - Try the Sunday Brunch for a Special Occasion

By Amazingly2 |

The grounds are beautiful near this old mansion converted to a restaurant. Look for the live peacocks. The brunch buffet is extensive, including well labeled salads, appetizers including delicious salmon, main dishes including carved prime rib, sides and desserts. Prices are high but worth the special experience. Make a reservation and check the web site before you dine. Order from the menu other times. According to the web site, renovations are scheduled to begin on February 15, 2016, so be sure it is open before you go there.

Poor waitstaff person but good food

By Joey R |

The food was good. The service was sub-par. Our server arrived to our table and lets us know he was glad today was his work Friday. Never a smile off this guy. Our order was incorrect. We were ignored when our meal was done and table cleared. Had to ask for our check and ask again for card to be picked up. This guy should not be in the service industry. The rest of the staff, from hostess to people who brought out the food, were excellent. But the main waitstaff person definitely gave us a negative experience overall.

Great Food, but Disappointing Service

By HornsFan73 |

First, I want to say that I probably will return, simply because the food was so good. However, the service was s-l-o-w, both in the bar and when we moved to the dining room for dinner. In fact, it wasn't just slow, it was odd (asking several times for salt and pepper, which seemed to really throw our server; not being offered a dessert menu - our server finally came back to the table and said, "so, is that it?"). The appetizers (pate', pimento cheese) were delicious - and those biscuits! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their entrees, as well. And, once we finally persuaded our server that we did want dessert, the bread pudding was heavenly. I have been going to Green Pastures for years, and while the new owners have done some nice things with the renovations, the new furniture simply does not fit the setting. Here you are in this beautiful old historic building, and the furniture looks like something you would see in a place trying to be "country." The new owners kept some of the old antique pieces, like buffets, which make the new furniture seem even more incongruous. Additionally, the renovation appears to have stripped the interior of whatever made the acoustics so pleasant before (you could always have a conversation at your table), and now it's like every other place trying to be trendy - everyone is screaming. There is seating outside under the beautiful oak trees (had been raining the evening we visited), and I expect the noise issue can be resolved by requesting an outside table. As I said, I will probably give it another chance, in the hope that we just had a server who had zoned out for the night. The food was that good.

Lovely evening

By l0vetravel7 |

What a quaint place to have dinner, the food was delicious, the menu not large but most could find something wonderful but honestly it’s just a slice of heaven to sit on the porch during a nice evening! I would recommend!

Disappointing...

By TBDuPont |

My husband set up a special birthday dinner at Mattie's as I had not been to the old Green Pastures in years and wanted to check out the new ownership. I went in with a 'Commander's Palace' expectation and left with a White Castle experience. For any of you who have been to New Orleans, Commander's Palace is set in an old southern home and has amazing charm, great food, wine and overall experience. Mattie's is also set in a beautiful old southern home, the decor is quite beautiful and it started out with a nice greeting and Happy Birthday. That's where the experience ended. Our server was inexperienced, did not have a clue about wine and could not even open a bottle of wine. The wine list...poor and odd, and they didn't even have the initial wine we ordered from the menu. Then, we ordered two of the most expensive entree items on the dinner menu. The Akaushi ribeye was terribly 'chewy' and although the flavor was not bad, it just seemed topical, as though someone had thrown on the seasonings at the last minute. The duck was overcooked and tough and there were several pieces that still seemed a bit too 'gamey' so again, it didn't feel well thought out. Lastly, the server never again mentioned my birthday, which is unusual for a nice restaurant to 'forget' between the greeting and table a special occasion. The $400 price for two of us was so not worth it. Don't go unless you're going for a wedding or you want to sit outside and have a cognac and cigar.

Southern Comfort: Stellar Atmosphere & Service

By CuriousOptimist |

It was such a treat to go back to Green Pastures for the first time in nearly a decade! Mattie's has maintained the authenticity of the historic house and grounds, but freshened it up with new paint and furniture. My husband and I chose to celebrate our anniversary here, and very much enjoyed dining inside the house. A long, hot, summer solstice day, we enjoyed refreshing and inventive cocktails like the Bacchus Cup and Kentucky Tea. The salmon and pork chop dishes were excellent. However, the house-made honey biscuits stole the show! The fare was appropriate for the season, and it is always nice to see chefs using locally sourced ingredients when possible. I can't get over the history here, the beautiful Live Oaks and peacocks, and genuine southern hospitality!

Welcoming, enjoyable, beautiful setting, memorable

By MJ54321 |

The reasons we chose Mattie’s were just what we experienced! The restaurant staff were charming and friendly, the food exceeded our expectations and setting is just lovely!!!!

Outstanding Food in a Lovely Setting!

By Jay F |

Attended a wine dinner at Mattie's, which only opened about six weeks ago. New restaurants routinely show rough edges but not so for Mattie's. Everything from the valet to the wine list are near perfect. Our menu featured a number of Mattie's favorite dishes: a lovely Chicken Liver Pate, a good Farmhouse Salad, outstanding Crispy Cauliflower, excellent Sauteed Squash, very good Roast Chicken, and a very good Bread Pudding. Featured wines were from Antica Terra and some of winemaker Maggie Harrison's favorite roses which are not from Mattie's regular wine list. However a quick perusal of the wine list showed that sommelier Paula Rester has put together a very interesting and appealing list at reasonable prices. I will definitely be going back to dine from the regular menu. Highly recommended and a great choice for a special or romantic night out!

Best Southern Brunch in ATX

By zxypoo |

Look no further if you want southern ambiance combined with peacocks nestled in trees. I recommend both dinner and brunch here, for dinner the fried chicken is amazing and for brunch you can’t go wrong with the fried chicken eggs benedict!

Elegant and Excellent

By cincitravelgal |

We visited Mattie's early on a Friday evening while in town for the weekend from Ohio. The main thing that drew me to dining there was the venue, itself, though the menu certainly looked appealing, as well. We had local friends (who'd never dined there) meet us. Our expectations were surpassed at every turn. The property and house can only be described as "dreamy"...we arrived at sunset, hoping to spot the resident peacocks. They were evidently already roosting for the night. The fairly lights in the garden (where it was still a bit too chilly to dine) were lovely, and we took pictures and had cocktails on the porch, while waiting for our friends to arrive. Our friends were running late, but the front of house staff was so gracious. They did warn us that they'd have to turn our table at a certain point for another reservation, but we didn't mind moving to the bar for a nightcap, so no big deal. We especially enjoyed speaking with and getting to know "Hope" at the front desk. What a gracious and professional and warm young man. The food was excellent. Our table shared MANY small plates, as well as ordered mains, and there was not a single thing that didn't get gobbled up. The cocktails were well-executed, and the wine list was extensive without being overwhelming. Our server, Ben, was also terrific. Professional and thorough, but still warm and funny. Prices were on par with what you'd expect. This place fills up quickly on weekends, so definitely make a reservation. We loved the little room upstairs where we dined, as well as the downstairs bar where we got our apertifs, and also the upstairs bar where we had a nightcap with Hayden (who was ALSO so much fun). An all-around excellent and delicious experience in SUCH elegant surroundings. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Gorgeous Place, brutally noisy

By barretta |

We had dinner at Matties and were pleased with the food, but as the title says, you could not carry on a conversation across the table without shouting. It's the new paradigm for restaurants, it seems, but no place should bill themselves as a 'romantic' spot if you can't have a romantic conversation with dinner. The service was stellar. The food was good to excellent. Not a huge menu, but good stuff, well made with quality ingredients.

Great Experience

By m343 |

We had a lovely dinner at Mattie's recently. Our group of eight enjoyed the setting in the big old farmhouse in Green Pastures. The 2017 renovations we tastefully done and all the room are very attractive. The food is very tasty southern inspired fare--with very large portions. The ribs and fried chicken were outstanding. A relaxing, charming evening in Austin.

Perfect Brunch spot for girls

By Sarah |

We went with a group of friends so about 7 of us. The building is a refurbished house and it’s so cute! The outside is beautiful!! It was pretty cold so we ate inside. The inside is just as beautiful. The food is amazing, huge portions! I was expecting smaller portions but they are really filling. We got French toast, the fried chicken eggs Benedict, BLT, the biscuits, the cheese platter, and the cinnamon knots. Everything was SO GOOD. It’s perfect for a date, wedding, family brunch, anything.

Beautiful hidden gem

We had a birthday dinner here. Beautiful grounds and charming space. Loved our food! Service was good and cocktails were great! We will be back

Wonderful grounds and excellent food and service. Great in the evening this time of year. Fried chicken remarkable. I’d be back !

Very poor service, decent food, beautiful restaurant

By PamATX |

Came for dinner with high hopes the grounds and the physical restaurant was lovely. Hostess was unfriendly and asked us to wait until our reservation time though the table was ready. Said she’d get us at the bar and never did. We had to asked twice. Arrived at table with missing chair that was slow to be replaced. Guest just standing there waiting. Not an ounce of hospitality in this southern joint. Waiter was fine on greeting but was clearly displeased when we didn’t order appetizers for a table of 6 and only a few of us ordered drinks and he never checked in with us once during the whole time. Food was decent but nothing to return to. Probably one of the worst service experiences ina higher end restaurant that I’ve had in recent memory. There are many great places in Austin and I would absolutely not recommend this one.

Hospitable staff and delicious Southern food

By Oprah47 |

This was the BEST restaurant we dined at during our visit in Austin. Beautiful grounds, fantastic warm staff and the best biscuits I've ever had...all served in a lovely plantation house. No criticisms at all, except maybe work on dimming those bright lights to make them more favorable to the complexions of the female diners :)

lovely place now in a not such a good part of town

this was a birthday party and we got a lovely room. the food is ladies luncheon which was perfect as that is who we are. having been here before for bridal parties i was please it was still operating. i would definitely not go here after dark as the neighborhood has changed for the worse.

New version of an old favorite

By Lisa S |

We last visited Green Pastures years ago and were excited to try its modern incarnation, Mattie's. We had a great evening with another couple. The La Louisiane cocktail was sublime if you like Sazeracs; the absinthe rinse was expertly done. The biscuits are not to be missed. All the entrees and sides were delicious, as were the couple of desserts we shared. The service was top notch, very professional and upscale. The ambiance was quiet and elegant. A nice antidote to the loud and pretentious vibe that pervades a lot of downtown places in Austin any more. Highly recommend if you are looking for more civilized dining experience.

Amazing Thanksgiving Buffet!

By Lois R |

Our family group of six ate at Mattie’s for Thanksgiving. The location of this restaurant is so unique because, even thought it’s located in the heart of a residential area, you feel like you’re out in the country. The restaurant is located inside of a large, beautifully restored mansion surrounded by a large, lush lawn with large, winding trees, and peacocks roaming the grounds. The Thanksgiving meal is an extensive buffet which offers such things as turkey, prime rib, crab legs, shrimp, salads, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, dressing, sweet potatoes, eggs Benedict, thick sliced bacon, and rolls on the main buffet. The prime rib was tender, moist, and excellent! There is an appetizer area which has several types of delicious cheeses and crackers, chicken nuggets on biscuits, spare ribs, and pimento cheese sandwiches, just to name a few items. There is also a dessert area which has mini key lime pies and apple turnovers which were both incredible! It also included French toast, pumpkin whoopie pies, and chocolate mousse. There were other things available in all of these areas but there was so much, I can’t remember it all! Each person also receives a complimentary alcoholic beverage which is chosen from a drink menu on the table. Everything we tried was delicious. It’s obvious that high quality ingredients are used in everything that is made at Mattie’s. Although the price we paid was higher than most Thanksgiving meals we’ve eaten at other places, we all agreed that the atmosphere, service, and quality of food was worth the cost. We plan on returning next year.

Disappointing

By J R T |

A small group of us who have been going to Green Pastures for good long while decided to see what the new , "improved" Green Pastures now called Matties was all about. If you've ever been to Green Pastures you are in for a shock. What was an elegant, turn of the century Victorian Mansion has been remodeled into a plain, white-washed building with very little of the original mansion left. The elegant dining rooms have been refurbished with stark white walls and something akin to picnic tables! Now for the food. Our waitress upon her arrival at our table announced that they were out of the Milk Punch Green Pastures was so famous for. Well of say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The menu had some interesting offerings such as fried chicken eggs benedict but on the whole the food was just o.k. In summary, if you're going to Matties to try and recapture what was the best of Green Pastures stay home and make your own Milk punch.

Great food & beautiful surroundings!

The property that the restaurant is on is absolutely beautiful! The food was excellent & the staff was very friendly. Really cute patio area! Worth the trip from downtown!

Great spot!

We LOVED our dinner at Mattie’s. It is a beautiful location, centrally located. The rooms are beautifully appointed and makes for a lovely dining ambience. The food was delicious! We had the best time. I would highly recommend!

Outdoor dining at its finest

By Chris F |

Coming from Chicago, Mattie's was a welcome change of pace! From the beautiful old house, to the outside lights to the peacocks strolling the lawn, it felt like we were in a wonderland. We came for a light dinner right when the restaurant opened. I'd highly suggest sitting on the porch if weather allows. The food itself was delicious - we ordered the cauliflower, the wood fired carrots, the cheese plate and the octopus and all of them were outstanding, but the cauliflower was the star. I would come back in a heartbeat. Service was attentive and very friendly.

Definately NOT Green Pastures

By MiriamOlesen |

My husband and I dined at Mattie's for Easter brunch. It is difficult to review Mattie's on its own merit because I was expecting it to be the long awaited, promised, reopening of Green Pastures. It is NOT! The only thing left of Green Pastures is the outside of the building. Frankly, if this review was to compare Mattie's to Green Pastures it would receive only 1 star. It is a far cry from Green Pastures and therefore was very disappointing. First of all we felt the restaurant's choice of giving a ticket to claim one alcoholic beverage off a limited cocktail menu to be tacky. I missed Green Pastures yummy, intoxicating (and I don't mean the alcohol) Milk Punch. Mattie's had a cocktail identified as a Milk Punch but it was a thin, watery concoction containing cream. I guess the sell of Green Pastures did not include the recipe for the Milk Punch. It was also clear that the restaurant was attempting to increase the bill for brunch as a wine list was provided along with the limited cocktail menu. My husband felt the wines which are always overpriced at any restaurant compared to what they can be purchased for at a grocery or liquor store to be even more pricey than what he is accustomed to paying at other high end restaurants. The brunch itself was also disappointing. The food that was offered for the most part was good but limited. There were perhaps 4-6 salads; the best being a beet salad with walnuts. Also a mixed salad with shaved vegetables--pretty, but I couldn't identify most of the vegetables by taste. The others were nothing special. The "skewer" offering was 1/2 a cherry tomato with a bit of cucumber and fat back. Oysters on the 1/2 shell and shrimp cocktail which was 1 medium to largish tail on shrimp in a small glass with cocktail sauce were on ice. If you wanted cocktail sauce for the oysters you needed the shrimp cocktail. There was a large chafing dish of plain white rice to accompany an oriental offering which I skipped. Breakfast items consisted of eggs Benedict--slightly overcooked and not sure what the meat was. I question that it was Canadian bacon in that it was a slightly grey color. Bacon and 2 types of sausage bites were present. French toast was more like a bread pudding. There was not a waffle or omelet station. Other offerings were creamed potato slices (sauce looked thin, runny) and a vegetable that I don't remember what it was. Ham was sliced and piled in a chafing dish to keep warm. Cutting station had beef and lamb. Basically that was it. Desserts were very disappointing: mini éclair, cheesecake bites, and a cupcake that was orange in color--supposedly carrot--with a thick, hard frosting. Cheeses were present. Salmon bit on a pumpernickel? cracker and cheese spread. Service was a little slow. I have been to restaurants that add gratuity to the bill for large parties but Mattie's added a 22% "service fee" for a check for 2 people. I was looking forward to going expecting Mattie's to be a reopening of Green Pastures with a new name but even after I realized this was not the case it was still disappointing. Austin has a number of really outstanding restaurants and I don't think Mattie's is one. We won't be back.

Good food, Good service, Good views

By Christine R |

Phenomenal brunch spot! Came for the first time and it was an absolute pleasure. The property is very quaint and beautiful. The food was delicious. I’m not a cinnamon roll fan at all but they were delicious. The cheese for the kolache was creamy and spicy with so much flavor. My husband ordered the steak and eggs. The steak was cooked to perfection and the potato cake was so creamy. I had the chilaquiles and they were just as delicious. The pork was tender and the tortilla chips were crisp. The fresh veggies mixed in gave it the perfect lightness and heat from the jalapeños. The service was top notch. Everyone was so friendly and went above and beyond. Can’t wait to go back!

Great dinner

Several of us attending a Morgan Stanley economic forum had dinner on June 14. Menu was simple but adequate. We all a an excellent garden salad. Fresh greens and a wonderful dressing. I had the salmon along with fresh vegetables. It was excellent and highly recommended. Dessert was a creme brulee, very good Reservations are highly recommended. We plan to visit again in the near future

Excellent food in a beautiful surrounding

By Jen78703 |

Some lady friends and I went here for brunch before going to the theater. It's been beautifully restored and they encourage you to look around upstairs too to see what they have done. The man who checked us in was quite knowledgeable about the history and very welcoming. We sat on the patio, enjoying the coolish weather and looking at the peacocks roaming around. The grounds are beautiful. The tables are far enough away from each other so you can have a nice conversation. Our food was delicious and pricey but not outrageous. Service was meh. Drinks not refilled that sort of thing. Just one example: We ordered biscuits for the table and only 2 arrived for our party of 3. When I pointed out that we had ordered biscuits for all of us the young lady just stared at me and said "So you want another one?". Say what? Well a 3 rd biscuit never showed up until I flagged down our waitress and reminded her. I imagine it's hard to get good help at a new restaurant. There is free valet parking- make sure you tip! Make reservations because it's very popular.

Painfully long lunch for just average food

By RJMooretx |

I know Green Pastures is considered an old Austin institution and I've dined there several times, but I've never walked out of there overly impressed with their food or service. My recent visit was probably my last. It was for lunch and the entire meal took over two and a half hours to complete and the food, from a limited menu, was very mediocre. Our server, while not horrible, was very stiff and a little pompous when answering our questions. The house is historic and the grounds are beautiful, but the food and service don't add enough to the experience to make Green Pastures a worthwhile visit.

charming atmosphere and great food

By jcb4255 |

We had a group of 12 people from out of town celebrating an upcoming wedding. Maddie's was recommended by a local and we were not disappointed! The menu was excellent with lots of choices for those meat lovers, meat haters and all those in between. Generous portions. Everyone loved their meals. Service was very good. Excellent wine & drink menu. About a 10 minute drive from downtown Austin. The atmosphere was lovely as were the grounds. This is not an inexpensive place but we all felt it was well worth it. we had two small children with us and hey were very accommodating

Not worth repeating

Lovely ambiance, but food very overrated. Buttermilk biscuits dense, wild mushroom dish served lukewarm. Key lime tart excellent but not enough to inspire a return trip. Overpriced.

39th Anniversary Delight

By Margaret W |

I got married at Green Pastures 39 years ago. We have come back to Green Pastures occasionally for dinner, and I have attended for lunch occasionally with the Austin Republican Club. So, when our 39th anniversary came up on Halloween weekend this year, we knew there was no chance we could go downtown to Chez Nous. So, we decided to celebrate at Green Pastures. What a good choice. The menu was enticing and we enjoyed our choices (salmon with lobster bread pudding), and red fish with crayfish remoulade. Green Pastures started us out with a complementary hors d'ovre that was a lovely little treat. Then, after dinner, before we venture into dessert, they served us a complementary lemon sorbet that was a great way to clear our palate. We shared a beautiful piece of chocolate cake. I had a glass of wine with dinner and it was a very nice d’Arenberg Viognier-Marsanne. The service was attentive, the atmosphere was very quiet and relaxed. We had a lovely evening.

Perfect Place for Progenitors and Progeny!

By Juanito_Hayburg |

It was a long anticipated meeting with family, and my favorite son sweated finding the perfect place for us to enjoy superb brunch. He did extremely well obtaining reservations at this extraordinarily nice South Austin eatery, which is the main focus. It's a bit tricky to find, being pretty well hidden amongst luxurious live oaks and other growth. It was a large Victorian family home in 1895, constructed of the finest local materials, located on a large enough plot of land to support gardening and some livestock; it was a reasonable distance away from the bustle of the capitol, Austin. It was a sanctuary of sorts, as the owners were able to thrive as well as take in numerous extended family members and visitors. "Southern hospitality" and decorum was the standard operating procedure, but, broke with that tradition as nobody was refused a meal. French cuisine was incorporated into an already delicious menu that includes items to satisfy both the vegetarian and carnivores palate. I ensured that multiple visits to this outstanding buffet kept my hunger pains at bay! I normally wouldn't have eaten so much, but it was way too tempting and, besides, I had pedaled around Austin & Clarksville earlier, borrowing an upright (it had been years since pedaling such a bicycle, but once you learn....! However, it had paddle shifters, which I had to ask other bicyclists how to use.) from my favorite daughter's beau. Anyway, this restaurant is top-notch, but top-dress not required, only semi-formal. The well-groomed waiters & waitresses were discrete and attentive. This was an excellent meeting & eating restaurant, and has my "wheel of approval"!

Amazing Location!

By Jen H |

This is the third time we have visited Mattie’s & we love this beautiful location. Our appetizers were delicious however when ordering our entrees it would have been nice to know the level of spice in the food. Our 3 girls could not eat their fried chicken sandwiches & curry rice bowl because in the description on the menu it didn’t state that these dishes were extra spicy. We would have ordered differently. The service is always great & we will visit again.

Dinner Served in Stately House

By JSS |

Very well executed estate house turned restaurant in a neighborhood setting on beautiful landscaped grounds. The house has multiple dining rooms and bars on two levels across the property. Food, service, and drinks are excellent, but as good as they are, the tasteful decor of the house turned restaurant, bar, and meeting space is what brings the experience here to the next level. Great spot.

Wedding Celebration 💍🥂 Perfection! The most Beautiful venue with Amazing food and Staff!

By Terri M |

It doesn’t get any better than this ! Despite the pandemic our sons wedding day won! A celebration of over one hundred turned to twelve. Mattie’s was the most Romantic intimate setting with a staff who deserves a standing ovation. Lexi Salon my coordinator was amazing. She spent endless hours and emails making sure we had a wonderful experience. Our servers Evan and Isabell along with our bartender Dustin and banquet captain Alana did an outstanding job considering they all wore masks. The food was incredible and service impeccable. The challenges with opening a beautiful restaurant and venue during coved 19 did not stop this terrific team. Wearing mask and taking all the necessary procautions we felt cared for as customers and safe. Laura, Director of Operations is professional and so nice to work with. Awesome job reopening. I highly recommend this outstanding restaurant. Perfection We will return in November for a wedding redo with all our guest. Can’t wait🥂💍🍾🥰💍🥂

Old Austin Restaurant

By David C |

My brother and I had lunch here on Sunday with friends. While both of us expected a brunch buffet we were surprised to learn they no longer offer it except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Quite a let down since it use to be my favorite many years ago when it was a family run business. They did seem to have brunch covered in their menu, but I felt their prices were high for what you got. An example would be two biscuits for $8 dollars. My brother and I both got the fried chicken/two poached eggs on a biscuit for $20 dollars. It was good, but not worth $20 dollars. Finally the whole atmosphere of the place seems to have been altered by the new owners from where it was years ago. It has gone from a high end more formal restaurant to one with a bunch of picnic tables put into what use to be a very formal dining spaces. It has just lost a lot of the old Austin feel. Personally I think the new owners went in the wrong direction with the change of the atmosphere, menu, and most certainly their prices. Another Austin restaurant off my list!

Beautiful place for brunch

By DallasLonghorn |

What used to be Green pastures is now Mattie's and it's probably a good thing. The setting is one-of-a-kind at the house and the gardens are nice with the peacocks everywhere. Note that a lot of seating is on the patio, which can get CRAZY hot and sunny. We tried to get indoor seating but were unsuccessful. But it was still nice on the patio once we got an umbrella. The brunch was great. Drinks wonderful and food was better than expected. Wife and daughter both said they want to go back next time in Austin.

One of my favorite restaurant environments!

By Maria 🪷 |

I can’t say enough good things about this place! It was easy enough to get a reservation and we sat on the porch. I highly recommend porch seating, but anywhere would be a good place to sit. It feels like you’re at someone’s house, but the social atmosphere is still there. I had the special, which was the chicken fried steak. It was enormous, enough for 4 meals for myself. It was the best meal I’ve had in Austin!

Akash the bartender was awesome!

By jellyO |

We started our evening at the bar and Akash made us beautiful and tasty cocktails along with tips on where to go while visiting for my daughter’s 21st birthday. While eating he brought a list of all of the places to visit!! Talk about Southern hospitality!! And the atmosphere and food were amazing!

From Giuseppe and Isabelle taking wonderful care of us to the kitchen’s fabulous fare to delighting over peacocks’ plumage, well be back. Well done. PS really appreciated the manager’s handling of poorly behaved twins. Nicely navigated. 👍🏼

Very Nice family oriented facility. Beautiful outdoor seating or enjoy unique antique indoor seating. Food is freshly prepared with eye for detail in presentation. However menu is limited for selection. Service is friendly and attentive as well.

Many "pluses" on the checklist of a good restaurant--worth the time to try it

By 1234texas |

We like to look at a restaurant from all of the possible points of view to measure them. To us, to get a 5 is to excel in every aspect of the Big Four. Our BIG FOUR measures are probably the same as for just about everyone: food, service, ambiance, and attention to detail. Green Pastures does well on those four! The fresh white table cloths, napkins, fresh roses on the table, hand wiped glasses, thin wine glasses, and high grade restaurant silverware are good examples of the attention to detail that is missing in many restaurants today. The food is well prepared and presentation is excellent. The service is friendly and efficient. The interior of the house is classic Victorian (but it could use a little more effort on the decoration to make it more "in tune" with the historic nature of the house). The work to preserve the central staircase and the wonderful balusters (which were lathe turned and well designed and executed by a real craftsman) is a great focal point when entering the house--as are the East Lake doors which appear to be original. The art work on the walls does not fit the building or the times in any way. Green Pastures also earns extra points on: historic site (it is a state of Texas historical marked site--which we like and highly value), grounds that have some landscaping effort (the site has some magnificent live oaks, but the plant selection could use a little work), ample parking, .... All that being said, we really enjoyed our time here, and will return with the family for an elegant dinner.

Great food and service. Pretty place.

By DalTexTraveler |

We went for Saturday brunch. The milk punch packed a punch and the fried chicken eggs benedict was delicious. The fried green tomatoes with crab salad was a great light meal, but we added biscuits and bacon to round it out and all were delicious. It is out of the way but worth the trip!
