Romantic atmosphere

By Viktoria Mitchel |

The restaurant was good but the steak didn’t have much flavor but it did come with a dipping sauce of your choice. I feel like the steaks were slightly over priced for the quality but it was still good. The atmosphere is really good and intimate and perfect for a romantic date night.

Diverse Menu at A busy Southside Restaurant

By SpursFan5 |

Very nice restaurant with wide variety of foods and drinks. We arrived shortly after opening (5:30pm) and had no problem getting table for 4 w/o reservation. An hour later the place was packed. Darienne was our waitress and was excellent. We shared appetizers and sides. All food and drinks were excellent. As place filled, noise increased, but we were still able to talk. Two larger rooms, an outdoor patio, open kitchen view from one room and a long bar. Definitely worth trying if you are downtown. Valet Parking available.

Disappointing

By Vowo |

Appetizer salad was overdressed. Ordered a main that was described as including cauliflower and was presented with a plate of greasy fish and an amount of cauliflower that was so small it could barely be seen. Apparently mains only include protein; would have been nice if the server had explained that - or checked back to see if we were happy with the food. We did order a side of gnocchi to try and match our different mains, but it was also overly greasy. Wine was good, albeit overpriced.

Great 2nd visit!

By Mindi S |

Came back with my husband and friends. Two of us ordered off the Restaurant week menus and the others Ala carte. We all really enjoyed the food, drinks and decor. Definitely want to return!

Top dining choice

By Allison L |

Recently dined here with some friends. We started off with a few cocktails from the house list and really enjoyed them - the namesake and another with grapefruit. I'd skip the hamachi sushimi but we did enjoy the calamari. For entrees the trout and schnitzel were both good - portion sizes are large. Brussel sprouts were good but a bit overwhelmed by their sauce. Service was top notch and with valet parking and nearby public parking, I'd recommend anyone to give this place a try.

Cold fries

By jjerryk |

Interesting upscale casual decor, difficult parking (but used $7 valet), slow service, expensive wine list, everything ala carte, cold French fries, expansive menu, mod expensive. Might try again.

Super Saturday Evening Dining

By Alanhimmelstein |

We made a reservation for 6:30 on Saturday evening and arrived on time we were seated very quickly and efficiently. The wait person who assisted us, Heather, was great and set a very high bar for Megan who was a main wait person. Megan exceeded all expectations - was very knowledgeable and provided us great suggestions for appetizers, soup, main courses, sides and ultimately desserts. Three of us had the French onion soup which was superb and one had the carrot ginger soup - also wonderful. For entrees, a couple of us had the pork schnitzel, one had the pan sautéed trout and one opted for the escargot pot pie. All excellent and very well prepared. The schnitzel portions were huge and generated a take home box. Wonderful wine list and great desserts. We would absolutely recommend Maverick to all and we plan on returning soon.

Mother’s Day was awful

By DBDINC1234 |

For Mother’s Day, I took my wife and a friend to the Maverick Restaurant on St. Mary’s. This was two visits, my first and also my last. We were seated promptly and our waitress gave us glasses of water, but we never received anything else. She took our drink and meal orders and then proceeded to wait on other tables all around us, but never stopped at our table again. After waiting almost 30 minutes, I had to actually flag down the waitress who had greeted us, to try to find out where our drinks were. Her reply was, “they’re working on it.” They must have been traveling to the distillery where the bourbon was made, After another 10 minutes, I once again caught up with our missing waitress to see what wasn’t going on. This time, she said, “Oh, your drinks are at the bar...”. This was too much, especially on Mother’s Day. I felt like the proverbial chopped liver, like I just wasn’t important enough to mater. On top of this, the manager was at the bar, talking with the bartenders and never came around. At this point, we decided to leave and I told the waitress how disappointed we were with her and her service. I also told her I would be calling the restaurant to talk with him regarding the non-attention and my friend told me she heard the waitress say what I could do with myself. Would I return? NO! Why go back and risk having the same thing happen? There are plenty of other restaurants in San Antonio that care about the customer and care about service, apparently something that the Maverick needs to learn how to do.

A Great Choice

By Robert C |

We really enjoyed this restaurant. The atmosphere was great and the food even better. It was crowded and they found us a table despite the fact we did not have a reservation. The food was well presented and very tasty. A definite yes.

French in Texas

By Paul M |

Maverick was an interesting find off the Riverwalk. Obviously popular with the locals. Excellent food, Good service, Good wine list and bar. Wish I had time to go there more than once.

Wow! What a great pkace

By Tracy C |

Five people dining after a long week working another convention. We were tired, hungry and a little silly too. From the minute we walked in we were warmly greeted and shown to our table. Our server came to the table immediately and was kind, thoughtful and very knowledgeable of the menu and drink menu. Our food and drinks were the best we had in San Antonio—all week! Bravo to the chef for the creative meals and wonderful sauces too!

Wonderful experience

By Mercedes6623 |

Another great Culinaria experience! This is a relatively new, French inspired restaurant, located across the street to the entrance to the King William neighborhood. The restaurant is beautiful inside. It has an industrial vibe with high ceilings, a long, old-fashioned bar, with many bar stools and large windows with table and booth seating. The booths are located directly in front of the windows. The waiting area is small but does have seating. There are large pieces of art hanging on the walls. A very small detail, but I love this attention to detail: The bar has hooks underneath to hang purses or bags. I really like this as it makes it nice not to have to put your purses on the floor. The Restaurant Week lunch menu was great. First course offerings: * Mixed Green Salad with a champagne vinaigrette. My husband liked this. * Carrot Ginger Soup ( i really enjoyed this which was served with a lovely piece of toasted bread and a large celery leaf. The taste of celery was evident and very fresh tasting.) The second course offerings: * CHICKEN PAILLARD with glazed carrots & chicken jus or * PORK CONFIT crushed potatoes & roasted vegetables or * TROUT ALMONDINE brown butter, toasted almonds, & green beans My husband enjoyed the very tender pork confit with both mashed potatoes and roasted potatoes as well. I enjoyed my trout with a very delicate sauce. The green beans needed a little more steaming, I think. The only dessert offering was CHOCOLATE MARQUISE. This is a flour less chocolate cake with a very rich chocolate taste garnished with a Chantilly cream sauce and sliced strawberries. Very good! It was a lovely meal and excellent for the price. The regular menu is very interesting and we would love to return to try their Thursday special of porquetta. This is served as part of three courses, for $25. Each day features a different special. This is in addition to their full menu as well as a brunch offering on the weekends. Our waiter/bartender, Jason, was very kind and knowledgeable. He was very helpful and answered all our questions. The restaurant has a large room in front as well as a whole other dining room at the back for the overflow at supper. There is also an outdoor patio for the cooler times in San Antonio. Behind the bar is a long hallway/ramp, perfect for wheelchairs. The ladies' bathrooms are lovely, large and beautifully appointed. Both ladies's bathrooms have tiled wainscoting. Above the wainscoting, and all around the room, in one bathroom, is a poster-like rendition of Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It is absolutely lovely as it appears to be on a pebbled surface, giving it an almost canvas-like appearance. The other ladies' room has a similar vibe but with a poster with birds on a greenish background. As is the case with downtown restaurants, parking is an issue. Parking here is confusing because the parking lot located next to the restaurant, at the corner, has about 25 parking spaces and supposedly charges $3; however, there is no box in which to leave money. The parking lot, for Maverick, is actually located in the back of the restaurant. We were told that parking is free at lunch but for pay in the evening.

Fabulous late night dinner

By Charlotte N |

My husband and I were downtown for an event and had not had dinner. We drove by the Maverick about 9:30 and decided to try it out. What an amazing dinner. The salad is amazing, trout almondine was perfect and we had cheesecake for dessert. I think it is the best cheesecake I’ve ever had. The portions are just right and our waiter was attentive and engaging. We are locals and we will be back, soon. Highly recommend.

Promising start, disappoining mains.

By Bff N |

Ate with family Sunday night. Starters were good. Mains were disappointing. The dessert was meh. Service inattentive. Could be great but currently a miss. Had a pate special. Wasnt pate but more like a slce of pork loaf. Was pretty good despite not being spreadable. Had the potato leak and the carrot ginger soup. The carrot ginger was really good, smooth, creamy, with hnts of ginger and cardamom. The potato leak was pretty good, but almost like creamy mashed potatoes. Had the cheese puffs (gougere). The were warm and puffed, but abit flakey, a not realy cheesy, kinda meh. Had the sweater weather cocktail. That was great. A bit sweet, but not cloying, and not strong. Interesting flavor. Then we had the mains. Beef peppered steak (steak a poivre) inconsistently cooked and without any au jus or sauce. Sat forlorn and alone on the plate. Pork schnitzel, large and thin, not much too it. Instrad of a lemon caper sauce, the lemon sat on top in one pile, capers in another, and butter in a third. Had the bean cassoulet. Was dry and the beans were undercooked. Homemade sausage lacked flavor. The whole thing was overwhelmed by bread crumbs. For dessert had the lavender strawberry tart. Not much lavender flavor and overall overwhelmed by a thick and heavy crust. Promising but failed to deliver.

Disappointed

By Carl T |

We ate at Maverick this evening. Our first visit, soon after it opened, was a near disaster. We were seated thirty minutes after our reservation time. We ordered cocktails which after several requests arrived an hour later. The waiter was embarrassed. When my wife's martini, ordered with a lemon twist, arrived, the lemon twist was a lemon wedge normally served with iced tea. The waiter was as shocked as my wife was, but he did not catch the mistake even though he served the drinks. We wanted to order meals, but the waiter was hard to find. When he took or orders, he left and then returned to complete the orders. He brought two dinner orders, then left three of us to wait for our meals. Steaks were tough. We could not identify the cut of meat. Dinner lasted about three hours, when we expected it to last about an hour and a half. My second meal, several months ago, was at lunch, with three colleagues. We were seated in the small nook. i don't remember details but the experience was good. Good enough to make me decide to return. I think all four of us had a pleasant experience. Tonight was date night. My wife gave me several choices. I picked Maverick because I had told her a while back that I wanted to give it another chance. The ambience, for dinner, in the rear: No table cloths. Napkins left lint on our pants/slacks. The music was from a Sirius type station. No problem with that, but it was not dinner, fine dining type music. Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues, which in a bar would have been fine. The patrons: shorts, sports shirt, and slides are okay. My wife ordered a Maker's Mark Manhattan, on the sweet side. Not as sweet as desired, but drinkable. The portion was surprisingly small, especially considering the charge: $15, which is more than we have paid any other place. I ordered an extra dry vodka martini. It was straight vodka. And portion was small, again, considering the charge was $13, for "well" vodka. My $15 glass of Sangiovese was barely drinkable. For an appetizer, we ordered what the menu described as grilled calamari and octopus, with Calabrese peppers and potatoes. Octopus was grilled. Calamari was not. It was battered with Panko type bread crumbs and fried in oil. The entire platter was covered in powdered red, hot pepper, which looked and tasted like cayenne pepper. Why would a chef cover delicate, supposedly grilled seafood with hot, red pepper? The pepper was so hot that my wife asked for some bread to soak up the pepper flavor. We were served three or four thinly sliced pieces of dry, white bread which i tasted but did not eat, because it tasted like the type of bread I might buy at an HEB-not Central Market or Whole Foods.. My wife did not have a choice. To our great surprise, Maverick charged $3 for the bread, almost a dollar a slice,. Usually, at least in this town, fine dining restaurants serve tasty bread without charge-even Paesano's serves good bread without charge. Radicchio salad was good. Came with tasty white cheese slices. I ordered the Friday special, porchetta, which came with a good dinner salad. My wife ordered a small portion of cavatelli (pasta) cooked with arugula, in kind of a light creamy sauce. Looked good, but she said flavor was bland. I have never ordered or eaten porchetta, so i was surprised at how fatty the serving was. But i guess it is supposed to be fatty, as is bacon. Came with baby carrots, baby turnips (radishes?), in a delicious meat broth. I would be tempted to order again. If I ever returned to Maverick. My meal was the Friday special, so it came with dessert. Panacotta. Quite ordinary. Looked like congealed gelatin at the bottom of the cup. So there you have it.

Can’t go wrong sitting at the bar

By Kimberly C |

After living in the Houston food Mecca for years, I have to admit moving to San Antonio was a bit of a let down. However, Maverick is the right balance of cool old building, interesting menu, solid preparation, experienced servers, and music at the right volume. I will be the first to admit I’m not easy to please in the food department. I’m a good cook so I when I go out, I expect better food than what I could make at home, great service, and a good vibe. Maverick gets points for all three. Karen, Andrew, and Damian behind the bar know their stuff and make recommendations based not on what is most expensive or most popular but what they think you will like. The menu is solid and has a bit of Texas flair. Definitely order the quail! When our family members from Minneapolis, New Jersey, Boston, and LA come home to Texas for the holidays, we will put Maverick on the list of places to eat.

Disappointing. Used to be a good place.

By Julie T |

My last two visits have been disappointing. Pork dish served as part of a fixed menu was fatty and un appetizing a few months ago. Latest visit featured slow service and raw Cornish game hen served to one guest. The trout almo fine was okay, but not outstanding. We then received a reluctant and insincere apology about the bad food. Probably will not return.

Delicious luncheon and great service

By Elizabeth L |

We stopped here for lunch and very much enjoyed our food: frisée salad, steak frites and delicious desserts. Highly recommend it!

A great Wine Program

By J Warren R |

A Texas Brasserie –seems out of place in San Antonio – but it works. Maverick takes classic Texas ingredients and elevates them with classical French preparation. The results are very good, deliciously good in fact. The Arugula salad with walnuts, beets, goat cheese and carrots was out of this world good. The Texas Quail was tender and juicy. The mixed grill is for those with a hearty appetite. Green Beans with blistered Shishito Peppers were a nice accompaniment. Maverick has an exceptional wine list and they are working to improve their wine program even more. There are lots of really great choices that pair perfectly with the meals. Ask for the wine steward if you need assistance, and I think you will find that you will get some helpful, friendly, well-educated advice so you can make an informed decision. The dining area is large and the open kitchen is an added bonus for all foodies. Glad I went here.

Very Good Service and Menu!

By RiverRat68 |

Hipsta neighborhood locale with great service (everyone throughout the entire restaurant is friendly, polite and really good!), great menu (food and cocktails), superb wine list, an all round excellent experience.

What a great, delicious food & service experience!!

By AnSuKap |

Exceptional delicious food and service! We had never such a helpful service. From explaining us the Texas brasseries concept, giving us advises about the food (inclusive the generously portions) & wine and absolutely delicious desserts (homemade ice cream and sherbets) and always filling up our water glasses with water and wine before they where empty! We really had a wonderful dinner evening in this nice and cozy decorated Texan Brasserie!

Don’t bother

By rockssmd |

Don’t bother. Worst cup of weak coffee in Tx. Confused service. Our party of 4 received our food in relays. No one ate together.

Nice place with good food

By FellowTraveler14380 |

This place looks high end and so are the prices (ala cart). The service is very good however we were disappointed with the food. The pork schnitzel came highly recommended so 3 of us ordered it. We all thought it was quite dry and tough. The fourth member of our party ordered the duck. One piece was not cooked properly and was inedible. The other piece was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The manager did offer apologies and compted a dessert.

Outstanding! Best Carajillo

By Tammy M |

Outstanding! Best Carajillo ! The quail is to die for! Great service, nothing to complain about. Will definitely be back!

For sure, one of the best in San Antonio

By Gary B |

My wife and I dined at Maverick tonight and we both think it was one of the best meals we’ve had in San Antonio. We started with the fried calamari and grilled octopus appetizer that comes with peppers and grilled potatoes. It was awesome, a bit spicy, just the way we like it. And there is more than enough for two. The beet and arugula salad was the best I have ever had. My wife wished it had a bit more goat cheese but mine was just right. Our entree was the mixed grill. With the appetizer and salads, we should have split a single but we went ahead and ordered it for two. Way too much. It includes beef tenderloin, pork belly, quail, and sausage. Everything was smoked to perfection. We had cauliflower and fried onions as the sides.

First night in S.A.

HIP NEW UPTOWN RESTAURANT!!

By Ellen W |

This is a great new place to try in uptown San Antonio. It has only been open for 2 months and still has many kinks to work out. The service was soooo slow. We were actually there for 3 hours. Some of the food came out cold and they had a hard time getting new food out to us. All in all, the management was very apologetic and the waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu. We loved the ambiance so we will definitely go back and try once again.

Excellent Service. very Attentive and very cordial.

By Michel F |

Very good food and excellent atmosphere. The music was eclectic and the service was attentive and fast. The food came quickly.

Great food and Staff

By Laurence |

Went out with friends, 12 of us we called and made a reservation a week before. Everyone was phenomenal. I valet parked and accidentally left my phone in the car. The hostess over heard what happened and offered the have the Valet go to my car and bring my phone, 5 mins later I had my phone. The Lady that waited on us was very attentive and Right there when we needed her. As I said there were 12 of us so we had a lot of food and everyone shared. Everything was delicious. I had the Pan roasted trout, phenomenal. My husband had the 1/2 roasted chicken, the skin was crispy and tasted great. A couple of our friends had the pork schnitzel, huge portions so huge we all had a taste, very good. The rest of our party had the pork chop and steak, and again both very good. The sides were large portions and shared by everyone at the table. Potato Pave, Crackling Mac&Cheese, Roasted root vegetables. For dessert our table had one of each offered, we were all satisfied. We ended the night with a very nice glass of the 20 yr old port. Did I mention i think i found my new favorite drink.. The D-205. We will be back.

Amazing drinks - great atmosphere

By hermilo1987 |

While walking back to our hotel via St. Mary's St. we stumbled upon this place. The lighting and overall aesthetic drew us in, and we were kind of looking for a last minute drink stop before calling it a night. Maverick was busy (Friday night), but since we just needed bar seating we waited all of 5 minutes before another party got seated at their table and we took their bar seats. The bartenders were working full speed, but approached you calmly and offered drink suggestions without any rush. Every cocktail on the menu is a house specialty drink (and this is a good thing!) You can close your eyes and pick any drink and would probably be satisfied with the result. Drinks were amazing, but pricey as you can imagine $14-16. Drink menu changes seasonally and so does the lunch/dinner menu to some extent. Can't wait to go back and have proper dinner on our next trip!

Very nice place in San Antonio

This is a place that definitely you should visit in San Antonio, fun, great bar, friendly staff, good vibe.

Consistent quality all around

I have been in several times for business meetings both with a small groups and a larger private event. Service and food were superior. Strongly recommend and another have to try place in SA!

Excellent experience

By Neil V |

We were staying on the Riverwalk and a local bartender told us about the Maverick. It was a easy 5 block walk from our hotel. The evening started with a awesome cocktail and Salmon Tar Tar appetizer. The small plate dinner menu had plenty of choices to please anyone. Very modern relaxing semi quiet atmosphere. Service was top notch. A definite stop next time were in San Antonio

EXCELLENT!!!!!!

By Los Y |

Great value, creative seasonal menu that offers excellent specials so that menu never stales. Space is open and inviting. Chef Chris Carlson rocks!

Fantastic Resturant with Excellent food & Great Service

By Armarina |

We were in San Antonio for a business convention and were looking for a good place to entertain business associates. We knew nothing about Maverick other than good reviews on T/A so took a chance. What a great choice! The ambiance was perfect, subdued lighting and an "upscale feel", the food was creative, delicious and the service was beyond compare. We went back a second night as it was so good the first night and we were not disappointed. An absolute "must" is San Antonio.

Great Food, atmosphere and service!

By Ports707 |

A friend in SA recommended our visit to Maverick’s and do we owe her big time! While not very impressive from the outside, inside is a whole new world!!!!! The ambience with the long bar, the exposed brick walls, the table settings and the staff were just the set-up for the food and wine selections. If you classify yourself as a wine connoisseur or even just like a house brand, Maverick’s has it all for you! Their wine list is extensive!!! The food list from appetizers to the main course to desserts are all can’t miss items. There are selections to fit anyone’s tastes or dietary restrictions. I would recommend a trip to Maverick’s as part of your San Antonio experience!!!!!

A Unique private room for a Rehearsal Dinner

By mairwin2017 |

The well trained wait staff did a great job of serving our group of about 30. The three main course choices were all said to be very tasty. The two desserts were also excellent. There are a lot of seating areas and is larger than it looks. Location is not far from the tourist area well worth the short drive.

Excellent dinner

By Phipper |

Impeccable service, excellent food and wine. We all ordered the beef bourguignon and it was very filling and wonderfully prepared. Be sure to ask for the bread basket (only served upon request). Would absolutely come back if I am in town again.

Great Find Just South of Downtown

By vaughanm1976 |

We had dinner here while in San Antonio over the Thanksgiving week. We were very impressed with the food and service. Very pleasant abience. Easy to get to just minutes from downtown San Antonio. Valet parking available.

Restaurant Week

By gospursgo63 |

Pulled up to valet and if you don’t carry cash you can pay with card (take a few bucks, can’t tip on the card) first impression walking in was amazing. Hostess greeted us right away friendly and welcoming. Great atmosphere in the front seating area, not so much in the back room. I know food is personal and to each his own however the meal was mediocre at best. Service was incredible, Kerri was our server, she and the staff very attentive without being intrusive. Try it at least once, may have been an off night in the kitchen.....

A steak worthy of Bonanza Steakhouse!!

By Steve S |

1/3 of my strip steak was inedible. Same for one of my 3 dining companions. One steak was OK. The fish was a winner. Gazpacho was puréed - a new presentation for me. Tasty. Dessert - Chocolate Pave is delicious. Enough missteps to make a return visit unlikely.

Nice restaurant. Good service!

By Miesteban04 |

Nice restaurant. Staff was nice and very friendly. We started with Gnocchi it’s really good our favorite. I got the king salmon, salmon was fresh and cooked perfectly but the sauce was tasteless. Over all the experience was excellent! Definitely will come back to try other dishes.

Great, cozy restauran

By Andrey K |

Great place for an intimate occasion. Ambiance inside is great, place feels very cozy, service is second to none and food is amazing. Ordered gnocchi with mushrooms and arugula salad and both were amazing. Great wine selection too!

Very good meal, would return

By HellenSC |

We had a weekend dinner with a group of four at Maverick. The service and food were very good. The only part of the meal that wasn't enjoyed was my sister's pan-seared redfish, which was almost raw. We're not used to red-fish being cooked this way-- salmon and tuna, but not rare redfish. Everything else was delicious, especially the veggie side-dishes. We got the profiteroles for desert and they were fantastic. The atmosphere is really nice, too. Table was roomy and comfortable, we felt well-attended and enjoyed our time there.

A really good restaurant.

By mike m |

Spouse and I looking for an upscale restaurant while visiting San Antonio. Maverick hit a homerun. We liked the ambiance, we liked the wait staff, we liked the menu, and we liked what we ordered. And I suspect that the rest of menu is just as good. If we were locals, we would be here a lot. Almost required to make reservations.

Wonderful Place

By cindyfisher61@yahoo.com |

Food was wonderful. My husband had the wood fired tenderloin and I had the stuffed chicken, both were cooked to perfection. Our waiter was GREAT (Jacoby J). Even took time to explain how things worked between lunch and dinner. We will be back!

Disappointing service.

By Alison L |

Hadn’t booked and didn’t feel particularly welcome. Waited ages and had to ask about ordering drinks. Food came quickly and was ok but not special given the price.

Outstanding Dinner!

By msubulldog25 |

Dinner for a work colleague/friend and me on a Wednesday evening. *Excellent* service in a lovely space. Intriguing menu full of “Texas” favorites (beef, pork, quail, etc) with “bistro” flair leaning French/Italian. Unpretentious, exceedingly comfortable! I got an excellent Trout Almondine with Haricot Vert (green beans). Outstanding turmeric cauliflower as a side and a refreshing non-alcoholic shrub (guava/herb, but varies by season). Looking forward to returning to San Antonio for work next April - a return to Maverick is a definitely worthy of a return visit!

Pretentious

By CraigWood88 |

The food is over priced and too salty. It feels like they are going for a high end restaurant but much improvement is needed. There is a definite modern British style to the food but its poorly executed, unbalanced and the seasoning is completely off. When you think of the worst British food look no further than Mavericks

Been open for almost 2 months now - Needed refined dinning in Southtown

By Kenneth H |

We have lived downtown San Antonio for 10 years and our locals. We have a social group called Thirsty Thursdays San Antonio, we go to local establishments for Happy Hours. With 30 years of Hospitality Experience, I and the group also give the GM/Owner honest feedback of our experience. Cindi and I have gone to Maverick for drinks and apps and they have been on the mark each time. Bar staff very engaged! You can see the management team floating from table to table..... refreshing! The only complaint I have heard is - a bit pricey. My argument would be it's not like the typical establishment in South Town. It's competition would be maybe the Battalion? Last night we had a group of 18 meet at the Maverick for our Thirsty Thursday Social Event, all downtown residence. I can tell you everyone enjoyed the patio, drinks and apps and off happy hour menu. I say you get what you pay for...... and in our opinion for a night that we want to up our game.... spend maybe a little more - Maverick has our business. One of the questions on Trip Advisor is "Can a vegetarian person get a good meal at this restaurant?" Don't let Bistro fool you, Cindi has been a vegetarian for 32 years, no issues getting a meal and or apps.

Turned off

By AnAnthropologist |

I had a business dinner here. The food wasn’t bad. I had the gnocchi and we started with a variety of appetizers and shared sides. I particularly liked the fried onions and the sushi and the potato square that was sort of like a gratin. However, from where I was sitting I could see the kitchen window where servers pick up the food. A trim man with a slight light grayish beard (my guess is that he was the expediter) kept re- arranging food on plates that had been placed on the window with his BARE HANDS! Needless to say, that is really unsanitary and turned me off.

Hit and miss

By BeakerTX |

Hit: Gougeres and calamari were the best things on the menu. Excellent spice on the calamari dish. Gougeres were fresh out of the oven. Bar service was great, as were the cocktails. Indoor ambiance seemed nice. Mushroom side dish is a must. Miss: Mac and cheese was lacking salt. A small pinch would have gone a long way. Ruined the dish. Service was timid and seating terrible. Made a reservation many days in advance. Arrived almost 30 min early, understanding we would wait and would just grab a drink at the bar. Seated a little before our reservation time, but outside which I did not request. Went with it anyways. That was a mistake. Warmest evening of the year, so far. Ants on the bench. Exhaust from the cars and trucks. Nice dumpster odor with the breeze. AVOID THE OUTDOOR SEATING! Mixed grill was a decent main to split. Didn’t seem fresh off the grill, but good flavor. Over cooked the tenderloin slightly, so a little dry. The bordelaise sauce was too sweet for my taste. Not impressed with this first visit. Likely our last given all the other superior options in the area. Maybe good for a drink and appetizer.

Almost there but not quite...like a near miss with the same intake of breath as you witness it

By James M |

I know its only been open 6 weeks however on a recommendation with caveats we headed out to Maverick. From the front door through the entire building the ambience, aesthetics and attention to detail in the decor in this newly opened eatery is outstanding. It feels different and each area creates a different vibe as you move through it. It was a Monday night visit. There were a lot of staff who had to move out of the way for me to pass-by, and what I perceived to be management. The food was good. Not great however so close to being so. The service was...interesting and any use of the terminology from your server on the fact you will receive 'excellent service from me' sets the bar high. Management - if you are on the floor then engage with your guests - learn from us dont just watch your staff without smiling. Whilst entertaining for your guests to watch probably not the intended outcome. Servers - if you use the word excellent in your patter then expect to be challenged on that. It was ok service not good. Learn the menu. Taste the food. Describe it in more words than what your diners can read. If you say you will be back in 2 minutes that isnt 10. Food - if you serve hot food on cast iron skillets then the laws of physics will be at play and within a couple of mins the metal will be hot and the food lukewarm. Heat the skillets prior - warn the patrons that they are and a result. I had the flatiron - decent size steak, well described except it was luke warm. Now i didn't complain because it was cooked to perfection i just wondered how it got to be luke warm? Cocktails - keep them going - different, vibrant colours and unusual combinations. will i go back. Yes in time. there needs to be some settling in. some fine tuning and it will easily become a favourite

I was excited coming here for the French-inspired cuisine, as I am a Francophile of the first order. This building, once a printing shop, has been turned into a lovely dining space. There is a front room, and then two other large rooms and a spacious outdoor patio. They can handle quite a crowd. I started with a kir, a drink made of white wine and creme de cassis, just as I would in France. Every day there is a three-course fixed price meal for $25. Since many of the entrees cost that much or more, it is a good price. The salad had a few little cherry tomato halves, and a few slivers of cucumber. The rest was spring mix. That was a little disappointing. I can get spring mix at HEB. One of our party didn’t eat her salad because the dressing was too smoky tasting for her. The waiter asked if I wanted pepper. I said sure, at which point he placed a pepper shaker and small dish of salt on the table. “That’s okay, I can do it myself . . . “ I joked as he walked away. Wouldn’t that have been a nice touch if he had done it, with a big old dramatic pepper mill? The chicken main dish (this being a Wednesday) was, like the salad, okay, but so simply prepared that I felt I could do that. I wanted something more involved, more expert, more French. (I vowed to come back to try the escargot pot pie.) The dessert was small and nicely done. I am opposed to huge desserts, which inundate the meal. Again, it was good, but none of us raved about it. All of this is unfortunate, because this place has great presence and potential. The prices are on the high side, so we expected more than we received. The service was attentive, although he might have asked about coffee before bringing the check. Lunch for two with tip cost $75. Not something you want to do every day. I’m willing to pay for quality, but I didn’t feel I received value equivalent to what I paid. However, this was just one meal and we had a great time. Don’t use this review as a reason not to come. I will return for brunch, and for that pot pie. Maybe they will win me over.

Maverick Texas brassiere

By mjsthoughts |

Wonderful food and sincere professional service. Many city people visiting their favorite restaurant. Our hotel didn’t mention it but a man on the Riverwalk told us that was his favorite. We followed his lead and walked 11 minutes for a very special dinner full of many new flavors. Sebastian was our waiter. Hopefully he will be yours.

Excellent in every respect!

By D D |

Arrived without a reservation and were given a choice of community table or heated patio. Opted for the latter. Excellent, prompt, attentive, personable service. Music just the right volume (delightful blues). Perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner out. Food was delectable (salmon for her, pork schnitzel for me). And to top it all off the visit to the restrooms--spacious, beautiful, lit candle, fine amenities. We have been in San Antonio for ten days and at 20 restaurants. This one was far and away the BEST!

Bar staff very unkind and unprofessional. Strange for such a nice restaurant.

By sunnyday422 |

Love South Town and happy to try this new restaurant. Decided to get a drink at the bar to check it out. Bar was not full. We sat down and waited and waited. We watched the bartenders casually make drinks and casually put glasses away. We thought we suddenly had invisible powers. It was the oddest thing. Finally, we patiently called one of the bartenders over and he looked at us with a blank face and asked what we wanted. We kept our cool and ordered. But, then were never asked if we needed another drink. We've never been to a place where the staff doesn't acknowledge you at all, with either a hello a smile or anything. Really odd that both bartenders were like this. Makes you wonder about the whole staff.

Great atmosphere, good food

By Darren63 |

Food was good, not great. I wasn’t super hungry so I ordered the calamari and shrimp appetizer and the French onion soup. Both were just ok. I expected the soup to be similar to other French restaurants that I’ve been to. Didn’t have a lot of flavor. Calamari and shrimp was breaded, but the breading wouldn’t stay on. It was ok. Several steaks ordered at the table and they all said they were great!

Great place to celebrate.

By anesdoc22 |

I visited Maverick with 5 friends to celebrate a birthday. First of all, it’s a great place to celebrate because it’s a beautiful restaurant with a great vibe and very large wine menu. Secondly, the food menu has a little something for everyone. I personally had the schnitzel and it was amazing! As good as anything I’ve had in Germany. (And because it is so huge I got to enjoy it a second time the next day). Finishing the night with the chocolate tart and port was the perfect ending to a great night. I can’t wait until my next visit!

Fantastic brunch!

By Lisa W |

I’ve been here twice for brunch and can’t recommend it enough! The food is outstanding...the brioche donut with brown butter is to die for ($3). Mimosas with your choice of fruit juices ($7). The rest of the menu is interesting and delicious. The service is impeccable and the decor is gorgeous. There is a lovely outdoor patio as well. Highly recommend this place!

This restaurant is a must when in San Antonio, Texas. Service amazing. Food was the best. Would definitely go again.

Divine Dining

By James H |

For pretty much the price of Olive Garden, you can get a top notch culinary experience. A sommelier helped choose the wine. For starters we had cheese bread poofs, escargot pot pie, and Tartar. All delicious. Then I had the seared mahi mahi and tried the beef tenderloin and schnitzel. The fries were also magnificent. Then to finish we had a petite syrah sweet wine with Irish creme ice cream, and peach upside down cake. Everything was delicious, but the mahi mahi was the best fish I can remember ever having. This food was so good it was practically a religious experience.

Amazing Experience

By Kendra S |

I visited Maverick with my boyfriend and another couple and had the best experience. It was my boyfriend’s birthday and he was given a birthday card signed by all of the employees, which was a great touch. The service was on point, atmosphere was great and the food was delicious. All of the dishes were very tasty and great presentation, reminded me of intimate, chic restaurants in LA. Our favorite items of the evening were the beef tartare, gnocchi, green chili mac, schnitzel and the strip, although you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Definitely recommend if visiting San Antonio.

One of the most amazingly GOOD meals I have had in some time!

By tigreyez |

One of the most amazingly GOOD meals I have had in some time! First off, Service was impeccable. Seated promptly and waitstaff was always magically there when needed. Exquisite bar cocktails and the wine list was impeccably selected. Gougeres were ordered 2xs! Calamari Octopus App was outstanding. Skip the arugula beet salad - not too much happening there. Our table shared the Truffled Parsnip Mouselline which while not only unique, was really quite divine! We all enjoyed the Potato Pave, Forest mushrooms and Brussel Sprout sides tremendously. Around the table, we ordered the New York Strip and Scottish Salmon, but the stand out entree was definitely the Duroc Pork Chop which blew us away completely. Juicy, seasoned perfectly - it was done to perfection. Dessert found us demolishing the riff on cheescake. WOW. Show-stoppingly delish! As an Austin foodie, I would drive 75 miles to dine at Maverick just to do it all over again.

Wonderful restaurant

By texan645 |

Excellent food, service and ambience. Come here just for the cheese puffs - gougeres! They were fantastic. Excellent arugula salad. I had the trout, and others at the table had the steak and salmon. Both excellent also. Our favorite besides the cheese puffs were the side dishes. We had the broccolini and the crispy potato salad which was incredible! Every potato was crispy and they sat upon a mix of dijon, mayo, sour cream, capers, etc. Was fantastic. We would return anyway to this great restaurant but especially for this dish alone. Excellent job chef! Excellent service and the two main floor managers were on top of every single item and experience for their guests. Very subdued and well done. We had reservations on a busy Saturday night, arrived on time and were seated immediately. Nice valet service also. Great job all around Maverick. This is a nice place for a more upscale dinner. It was my husband's birthday which they had asked what event we were celebrating when I made the reservation online. They had a birthday card on the table waiting for us when we arrived - lovely touch and thank you!

New and interesting

By ada d |

From where we live, it took us 45 minutes to get there. After we reviewed their menu, we asked if they prepared their meals separately as in fish grilled separately from their meats and the answer was NO. They grill everything together, so anybody with a fish allergy BEWARE, they are not prepared for allergic people. So one of us had to eat the ONLY thing safe to eat which was a pan fried pepper steak. It was extremely hot from so much black pepper on it. Requested medium well, not bloody and it came medium red-bloody. Not a good sign, chef did not care at all. Someone else had the crispy duck which was ok. Quiet place, nicely decorated, great service, pleasant for a quiet night out but too far and in a not so nice area of town.

The best in downtown

By Krista Knight |

Seriously one of my favorite places to eat in San Antonio! Every time we come they have the best specials which we always enjoy. Their plate of the day is always impeccable. We love all of the soups, salads and appetizers. We have had them all! The best entrees: the salmon, the duck, the quail, you name it. We enjoy every bite. My favorite desserts are the key lime pie + the cheesecake! Both are out of this world! They also have a phenomenal wine selection and amazing Sommelier’s and delicious cocktails always coming out from behind the bar. The service and staff are wonderful and always providing amazing service to everyone.

Delicious Texan Take on French Bistro Fare!

By DaisyDot24 |

We came here with some colleagues for dinner and was blown away! The drinks were delicious and the food was all great. We had a wonderful server who walked us through the menu and recommendations. She also helped us decide on a few different items. The gougeres and the octopus starter were very good. The escargot pot pie looked amazing, but they had sold out by 6:30, so get there early if you are looking for that! The entrees and sides were all very good and fair portions for the price. This is one of the best fine dining establishment in San Antonio!

A Gem in San Antonio

By CPH0213 |

It can't get much better than this. A place that combines a casual vibe, and unpretentiousness and yet brings a singularly refined approach to dining is a rare find. The setting is a quasi-industrial one with exposed brick and utilities but introduces a chic, aqua look to the dining area. The personnel (because to call these folks "wait-staff" is abusing just how good these professionals are) are welcoming, knowledgeable and define "service". And then there is the food... truly amazing. The chef and kitchen staff bring a wonderful twist to brasserie standards like steak-frite or duck; taking French cuisine and spinning it with a wonderful Texas-style brio that redefines the dishes into a unique, wonderful culinary experience. We were blown away by the place!

Not as good as it was last time.

By Stuart P |

Had enjoyed a visit when in San Antonio last year but did not enjoy this visit. Super chilled in the air conditioning - take a sweater and a jacket- but food disappointing- combination of slow service, cooling food and burnt fries. Sadly our last visit.

Slow service, high prices

By Cameron Klein |

Slow service and overpriced is how I would characterize dinner. I would recommend this place as a place to bring a date/spouse for cocktails. The Good: Our friend ordered a Pork Chop plate and the meat was quite good The Blonde Ale was very good The Double Cooked Frites appetizer was nice The Bad: The service was so slow I felt like I was growing older just waiting for drinks or food to come Calamari was Meh. Chewy and not enough taste Burger was burnt The fries that came with the burger were way overseasoned with garlic aoili. I had the burps all night because of that Overpriced on top of that, in my opinion.

Maverick, Encore!

By Boris A |

We live a few blocks away from Maverick. My wife and I - sometimes with my children - frequently dine at the restaurant. If you are a visitor or if you live in San Antonio don't miss it. The ambiance is great, the food well prepared and tasty, the menu gives you options and the wine list offers wine from domestic and international terroirs. The service is always polite, professional and attentive (Zack did an extraordinary job during our last visit)

Top Notch Food & Service

By PDXPAT80 |

We thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Maverick. The mixed grill included quail, tenderloin, pork belly, & sausage, all beautifully prepared. Those who ordered it thoroughly enjoyed it. Same for the beef bourguignon. And the butternut squash soup, which was a perfect combination of thick, smooth, & flavorful. As our server pointed out, this is truly an a la carte restaurant ~ we ordered 5 sides for the table, all of which came in generous "single serving" bowls large enough to share. The green chile mac & cheese with pork cracklings, the endive gratin, & the green beans & tomatoes (which had a kick) were a big hit. The appetizers were good, too, esp the gougères. And don't forget dessert! The chocolate mousse cake was fabulous, & my friends enjoyed the crème brûlée (& to a lesser extent, the profiteroles. If you're a chocoholic, opt for the chocolate mousse cake instead). Our server was friendly, funny & genuine; he was also well informed, and appeared whenever we needed him. Overall a fantastic evening, and very reasonably priced.

Great experience

By Emery Lee D |

Semi refined atmosphere, yet casual. Sebastian took great care of us and a well experienced and engaging asset to the team. We sampled the mussels, which were great. A bit of a twist on the kale salad, but food. The quail, sausage and steak platter were all pleasing. Nice cocktail selections and broad wine list. I will be back. Also, finally a place with acoustics that allow one to converse (and hear one another. ) kuddos

Excellent restaurant that has really come into its own

By Chinapjs |

From start to finish this was an outstanding dining experience in whAt surely is one of the best new restaurants in San Antonio. Service was excellent and solicitous. Server was knowledgeable about everything on the menu. We tried a little of everything so Ican say the food is uniformly excellent. We shared the calamari and octopus starter (flavorful and devoured quickly) and a cheese plate - very good. Our party of six had the salmon ( cooked to perfection), pork schnitzel ( best in San Antonio?), chicken paillard (every Wednesday special), beef tenderloin, and mushroom lasagna. I tried it all and wow is the only word. The schnitzel is better than the one at San Antonio's 100 year old German restaurant! The desserts ( we had 4) were perfect especially the pumpkin Cheesecake. My only slight criticisms: need 1-2 more fish seafood dishes to balance out the menu and the potato pave was bland. Maverick and it's partner restaurant the venerable Biga are now our favorites here in San Antonio.

Amazing dishes

By Sami I |

Great non-touristic a la carte experience just a walking distance from the river walk. Amazing cocktails and reasonable prices.

A Texas Brasserie? Yes, and quite good!

By Boris A |

Maverick is, definitely, an addition to the San Antonio restaurant and gastronomy offer. The place is new, however, we have been there twice in the last 15 days - My wife and me first, and then with our daughters. The decoration is elegant, the brutalist walls go wonderfully with the delicate lamps and sober tables. The bar is vibrant, well supplied and elegant. The wine list is good and the by-the-glass offer is quite nice. Now, the food! It's good and will make you return for encores. Try the rotisserie chicken and the octopus & calamari appetizers. Don't be shy and try the foie gras. The pasta was "al dente" with a delicious pesto sauce; good job! The service was professional, polite and very attentive. Make sure you make reservations. It's busy!

Great end to the day

By Tyler G |

After a strenuous trade show at the convention center, we found this gem on yelp. It didn’t get many reviews and was rated affordable so we tried it. WOW!!! What an experience! From Zac the bartender making a fantastic Le Mure, to the servers giving us suggestions based on their personal experience (Megan & Marcus). This place is a great end to my day. The appetizer Gorgre (aka Cheese puffs) were amazing!!! Light yet filling. A sharp crispy outside, with a puffy soft inside! I ordered the hamburger... I know... really? a hamburger? It was recommended by Megan. The potato roll is a bit too thick but when combined with the burger is appetizing and cooked perfectly to order. The Fries were deliciously crisp! I took the top of the roll off and it was GREaT!! My friends ordered the mixed grill, sausage, quail, tenderloin, and pork belly. The double order fed 3 people perfectly! The mixed grill came with Mac and cheese which was very good as well. I would recommend what we had to anyone looking for a fantastic meal to end their day! For dessert the chocolate moose with the coco-nib ice cream.... it was tasty and the port wine was a nice finish to the evening.

Wow

By markthesharkOhio |

So we finally made it here and what an awesome experience it was. The cocktails are prepared perfectly and the food was delicious. We had a variety of different things and everything was great. Oh but the cocktails. Great!!!!!!! The staff was very friendly and attentive as well. Definitely will be back and definitely will be back.

Poor Service with Elitist Attitude

By Rhiannon C |

I am incredibly upset with the attitude and service presented by the staff. When calling to make a reservation I was laughed at by the hostess stating one was not available. I then asked if there would be room at the bar to order dinner and again was told no while hostess continued to laugh. I called later in the day to speak with a manager to pass on feed back in regards to my experience only to be placed on hold for several minutes and then the call being disconnected. I never made it in the door to eat but if this is the service for a table and can only imagine if I dined inn.

Great food & service

By jimbalaya1 |

Never had a bad bite of food here. Service is always outstanding. Now open for lunch which is good news because their dinner portions are huge. Pork schnitzel, trout almondine & gougeres are all great. Highly recommended!

Fun Group Dinner

By PatDuckworth |

I went to Maverick for dinner with a group of friends from a conference. The restaurant was very accommodating of the large group at short notice and the waiter was very helpful. I had the special of the day which was Cassoulet which came with a salad starter and dessert. All very tasty. The mixed grill looked good. There was a problem for one of the group who needed gluten-free but it was sorted out. My friends enjoyed some choices from the Bourbon menu. Modern decor.

My new go-to restaurant in San Antonio!

By artsandculturelover |

Great experience. Everything -- food, presentation, service, decor, lighting, and level of noise -- could not have been better. Not a huge, long menu, which I prefer. Very fresh, unique shared plates, salads, house-made pastas and entrees from the grill -- steak, quail, and fish. My husband like to share and not have large plates so having two different sizes -- starters or main--works perfectly. Next time, we will try something from the Rotisserie or Sautéed. Looks like we will be coming back often!

Love This Restaurant!

By Deborah G |

The food was amazing. The atmosphere was posh, friendly and casual at the same time and service was outstanding which is saying something in these post COVID days. I highly recommend and will be back anytime I am in San Antonio.

Texas brasserie, with great atmosphere, great mixed grill.

By bdt |

Casual yet fashionable place that falls into the category of Texas brasserie. The menu combines Southwestern and Continental cuisine. The mixed grill (priced at $25 for single serving) included (all wood-fired) grilled quail, tenderloin, pork sausage, and pork belly. The quail is particularly good. Nice wine selection, and very attentive staff.

Really a great experience

By doctoryes |

Our first experience at Maverick; it was highly recommended and exceeded even that.. Really excellent in every respect. I had the double pork chop and my wife had a pasta dish; salads were all great (arugula was delicious). Our friends had the angus New York strip and the pork schnitzel -- enormous -- and they both loved theirs too. Our server was knowledgable and courteous and we found the drinks good and reasonably priced. A thoughtful touch: complimentary sparkling water if you like. Overall it was fun, reasonably priced. We'll definitely come back.

Incredible Meal with Service that Matched

By msudawg12 |

We had an amazing meal at Maverick. It started at the bar while waiting on our table where the bartender was incredible helpful and very good at what he did. The two versions of Old Fashioneds that my wife and I had were both great. Once seated, our server was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable about all of the dishes. He was super friendly as well. We had mussels and a grilled kale salad that were incredible. The duck was amazing. The main thing I hope you do not sleep on is the quail. I cannot say enough about it. They were delicious. Do not miss your chance to eat at Maverick.

Not the usual, but very good.

By lesleyk204 |

We were their on a Saturday night and it was very busy, but the service was excellent. the food was very good too! Food was well presented and the onion soup delicious! We really enjoyed the cheese cake dessert!

Worth It For Sure

By Frank A |

Last week my wife and I attended a showing for Steve Smith the SA Art Guild artist of the year. As we were departing I realized we were within walking distance of The Maverick. We had been wanting to try it out. We got there just as they opened with plans to have a drink and a snack due to it being so early. The service was superb and after a leisurely glass of wine we decided to do an early dinner. Everything is a la carte but you can order small portions or full and the food was excellent. We highly recommend the Maverick and we will be back soon.

Airmen graduation celebration

By Ann B |

We came to San Antonio for our son's graduation for Air Force BMT. Weren't sure where to go but wanted to celebrate. We couldn't gave picked a better place...was pure luck. Sure, it was off the usual path but such a cute little section of town. Lovely place. Perfectly decorated from linens or interior. Outdoor and indoor seating. Luis was our server and was helpful, delightful and personable. Table had the flank steak, salmon, quail and mixed grill. Sides were mushrooms, cauliflower, fries, green beans, and the child mac and cheese. Portions appropriate and proportional to cost. High quality. I tasted that pork belly in the mixed grill and thought I was going to attack my son for his plate. Everything was just perfectly seasoned. Wish we could eat here every night. Cost with a hefty tip was about $220 for a family of 6, which I found very reasonable compared to other establishments. Thanks so much for making our celebration memorable.

Nice Varied Menu and Fair Wine List

By Doug G |

Away from the bustle of The River Walk this is a nice place to have dinner. Everything was good apart from the Steak Tartare which although good was not very authentic. I had the steak which was good and try the cauliflower side dish. It was very good

Really Great

By Juantwo |

Our oldest grandchildren directed us here as we have never been. Of course they insisted on coming with us (lol)! Great choice as we had fabulous food and a great waiter. Very nice atmosphere and you could actually hold a conversation without being overwhelmed by noise from other tables. Very interesting menu choices including schnitzel which I had to have. It was terrific. Can't wait to go back!

A Brunch to Remember and Repeat

By tltalbert |

The Maverick Texas Brasserie, San Antonio, TX, provides a truly excellent Sunday brunch dining experience. From the moment the members of my party and I entered the restaurant’s eclectic space, we were welcomed by the staff with good cheer and warm smiles. Arriving on time for our 10:30 a.m. reservation, the host invited us to follow him and en route, he took the time to engage each of us in a friendly conversation, including the toddler in our party whom he charmed with a smile and an extended hand that allowed her to lead the way to a comfortable three quarter moon window booth where we were seated. Soon after being seated, we were greeted by our server Jonathan who took the time to answer questions and offer brilliant recommendations regarding the enticing drink and food choices offered on the Maverick’s creative brunch menu. The result of Jonathan’s insightful guidance was a brunch expertly prepared, beautifully presented, and unquestionably enjoyed by all at the table. The Eggs Benedict, Steak Frites, French Dip, Vichyssoise, and the two orders of Fried Sweet Dough were orchestrated with perfection by the talented kitchen team and most assuredly passed around the table for enjoyment by all. The only disappointment we each experienced was when we discovered that our plates were empty and the time had come for us to bid farewell to the Maverick team. That said, we fully anticipate resolving this disappointment by returning as quickly as possible and in the interim encouraging our family, friends, and folks near and far to make their way as soon as possible to The Maverick Texas Brasserie in San Antonio, TX.

Dinner with friends

By sagumdr |

Visited Maverick with friends and had a great experience. The ambiance is warm and there is a comfortable modern vibe. We shared appetizers including crab cakes and escargot. Both were excellent! For dinner we shared quail, beef sirloin, and schnitzel. All were delicious! The wine list is also very well stocked. We will return soon!

Good place for a special dinner out!

By Kim J |

Great ambience, a la carte menu, and great service. With higher priced menus I find a hard reason to return to the same place more than once, but I'll be going back to Maverick. They have a huge menu that all sounds amazing, and based on the meal we had there I'm sure it's all tasty! There were so many thing I wanted to try on the menu, but we settled on the Pork Schnitzel, Flat Iron Steak, Brussel Sprouts, and Fries. I would recommend any of those dishes. Definitely leave room for dessert - we didn't- but I wish we had! Like the rest of the menu the dessert options were intriguing rather than being the typical boring fare.

Texas/French cuisine with a unique twist!

Great food, friendly staff, beautiful decor and amazing homemade drinks and cocktails! Valet park or you could park across the street for free also they have amazing desserts! They make their own pastries and pasta in house!

By Wep25 |

Cool place, excellent service, great coffee. That’s the upside for brunch. The food, not so much. Adventurous menu, which we like, but skimpy portions and steep prices were a disappointment. Also, can’t say we were blown away by the taste either. Lots of potential here but they’re not reaching it yet.

Great Food & Service

By Brent B |

Extremely glad to have visited the Maverick while in town. Classic, old style bar greets you as you enter and seating was very comfortable. From the appetizers to sides to main dishes all the food was outstanding. Service was impeccable and Sandra our server was helpful on choices. Solid restaurant with great choices!!

Fantastic food near downtown

By wukovits |

We visited for our first time on a Saturday night and were seated immediately for our reservation. We opened with a cocktail from the menu, a Patio Preserver, and a Cabernet from their selection of wines by the glass. For appetizers, we ordered the Calamari & Octopus and a cup of the Cream of Cauliflower soup; both were exquisite. Our entrees included the Pork Schnitzel topped with an egg and the Croque Madame. For sides, we sampled the Green Chili Mac & Pork Cracklings and the Green Beans with Cherry Tomatoes and Blistered Shishito Peppers. Everything was amazing and the large portions left plenty to take home. Last to the table was a square of Key Lime Pie and coffee, which ended our meal and experience with a delightful finish. There were a number of interesting dishes on the menu that begged to be tried, so this will not be our last visit to Maverick.

Good but too loud.

By sambY103DE |

Four of us enjoyed the food very much. Restaurant interior is attractive and comfortable. Yet, for some reason unknown, the managers believe loud pop music is a good idea. Almost ruined the evening.

Great Place for Dinner!

By BluePlate-Now |

Went for an early dinner with friends and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and drink! Drinks and wine were perfect! Staff very attentive from the front door, to wait staff to management! The schnitzel was huge, done perfectly and the lemon caper sauce hit the spot; Steak Frites with addition of the Parm-Truffle fries was great and the Daily Special of he Pork Confit was excellent. Go enjoy yourself here!

Very good.

By Oliver T |

Was in walking distance. Very friendly, good service, fair prices - no tourist trap, nice choices on the menu, we had Escargots, 12 oz New York strip, and a lovely cheesecake. We will definitely return there. And I can really recommend this location.

Will not be back. Food awful, wait time inexcusable,. Do I really need to type more to get to the required number of words to get my point across

Promising, still working the kinks out

By TX2OBX |

Wife and I came here with our granddaughter, a student in SA. We had reservations, used the valet parking, and were quickly seated in the well appointed dining area.. We had the salmon tartare appetizer (excellent), flank steak, and crispy duck. The duck was undercooked, but the steak was fine. The problems were time (very, very slow) and service (disinterested). Getting our server's attention was a challenge. I'm quite sure the problems are growing pains in this new (one month) restaurant, and will be rapidly solved.

Good and Bad

By AJBtheSequel27 |

Went there with a colleague for dinner. The decor is casual but nice; I’d say trendy. Pricing is very reasonable for both drinks, wine and food. The Good: excellent bar. Craft cocktails by guys that knew what they were doing. The Disappointing: Ordered calamari for an appetizer which was very good and the portion was generous. Colleague ordered steak and I ordered duck. Duck was excellent. We experienced disappointment with the steak which was ordered to be cooked medium plus. It came very rare. We asked the waitress if she thought is looked medium plus to her and she said no. I said that she should ask the chef what he thought. She came back and said that he said maybe it wasn’t medium plus. I’m not sure what they thought my response would be, maybe accepting, but I said that the chef didn’t know what he was talking about if that was his answer and that I would like to speak to a manager. When the manager came to the table she apologized but then had a series of excuses for the chef and their grill. (It’s a poor craftsman that blames his tools.) Really? In situations like this I feel that the person talking to me must think that they can tell me anything and I’ll accept it similar to serving me something different than I ordered and that I would accept anything thrown at me. Admittedly I am not very understanding of restaurants that make mistakes and don’t own up to them. Maybe I’m too harsh but I won’t be back and this review stands on it’s own merrit. If you’re ok going to a restaurant with this attitude then be my guest. The restaurant business it too competitive for me to put up with this. Good luck Maverick - I’m out of here.

What a great addition to the Southtown foodie restaurants! Had a terrific meal and the wine list (although no Domestic) is amazing. Started with appetizers of Mussels and salmon tartare. I had the Roasted Butternut Squash soup ❤️. Divided up entrees between beef, salmon and trout. All delicious. We had sides of mushrooms and the skinny fries onion rings. Gotta have those!!

Great Sunday Brunch

By Robert G |

7 of us went for Sunday Brunch and the Drinks, Food and Service all was done in an excellent manner. We were seated at our reserved time, Drink orders and Water came as soon as we were seated and our waiter answered all menu questions. The menu was very French inspired and everyone in our party enjoyed our visit. We all plan to return.

New refined dining

By christophermL2200SK |

This is a great new addition to the San Antonio dining scene. Offers refined dining in a lively, elegant atmosphere. As a vegetarian the fare is definitely meat focused, but there are enough offerings for a vegetarian to choose from. The salad was very good and perfectly dressed. My partner had the quail and enjoyed it very much. They have an interesting and varied wine list. The bar offered some great cocktails as we waited for a table. It has a sprawling layout with several different spaces, including a lovely covered patio that looked quite inviting when the weather is right. We sat in the main room which was full and bustling but not too loud to keep us from enjoying our conversation.

Superb food and service. Bar fun if you only want drinks and snacks. Highly recommend crab cake sliders and quail. Best I’ve had. Desert menu unbelievable.

A sophisticated, delicious neighborhood gem

By CPH0213 |

A true gem! Everything from the welcome, the wait staff, cocktails and food were exceptional. Our meals were thoughtfully prepared, innovative and absolutely delicious. The personnel are top notch making you feel sincerely welcomed but not intrusive. The general vibe is cool, sophisticated and relaxed. This a great restaurant.

Awesome rxperience

I will come back to San Antonio just to eat here! Fish, pork, great vegetables and desserts. Guinness on tap. Quiet for talking but also nice sense of business and efficiency. And they know their wine. Great restaurant

Snobby Country Club Vibe in Southtown

By TexTravel |

This restaurant caters to the blue haired country club crowd. The hostess and manager that greet you at the front of the house favor a certain type of customer who they call their "regulars." Everyone who doesn't fit the Alamo Heights look gets seated in the back of the restaurant. Food is good and serving staff friendly but the front of the house's attempt at being snobs is distasteful. Parking is also difficult with construction right next door and a very slow valet. If you want to eat in Southtown there are many better alternatives. Try Battalion it is right around the corner and has great food, easy parking, and a far more welcoming staff to greet you.

New Trendy Place

By Deb B |

We had heard great reviews and were looking forward to trying this place. We were stymied at first because the parking in this area of town is confusing. They offer $7 valet at 5:00, but if you’re there earlier the surrounding pay lots are either more expensive or unclear on when you can use them. Another restaurant owns the most convenient parking. The restaurant is in a very cool brick building which has a very inviting atmosphere. There are small plates and several entrees, sides are a la cart. The best deal is their daily special which includes a side and dessert for $25. The food was very good, the wine list very expensive. We were told we could order happy hour priced wine at the table, which we did. But when the bill came we were charged full price, which was corrected. All in all it’s a place I’d try again.

Bit Pretentious But Acceptable Dining.

By The Old Chief |

I was prepared to not like this place because of its perceived pretentiousness, but my son prevailed on my wife and I to give it a try. I'm glad he persisted. We arrived a bit early for our reserved time so had a while to enjoy a drink at the well-stocked and expertly manned bar. Had an excellent, if expensive, sidecar. We were seated in the well-appointed dining room right on time, and our server was friendly, efficient, and helpful in explaining the specials and with questions on menu selections. Unlike several other restaurants we went to in San Antonio the noise level in Mavrick's was politely low. The seating is comfortable, with attractive decor. Our orders were taken promptly, and appetizers arrived quickly. My wife and I ordered steaks, both excellently prepared and served. Steak fries and sides were equally good. We skipped dessert.

Really want to like it, but...

By drugs2017 |

This was my third visit, which says how much I wanted to like it, since San Antonio needs more good upscale restaurants. And there are good things to like at Maverick- the valet parking, which is necessary, is quite reasonable, reservation times are honored, the ambience (particularly the Tavern Room) is very nice and the waitstaff is professional and competent. Unfortunately, the food is inconsistent in that some entrees are quite good whereas others are no. At the last visi, 2 of 4 liked what they ordered but 2 did not. And that was true of our other visits also. Most disappointing is the pace of the meal, or should I say the lack of pace. The time for the first course to arrive is often quite long and then the time to the next course is truly excessive. 3 star michelin restaurants at which I have eaten take less time between courses, and Maverick is not 3 star. Not sure if their kitchen is too small or there are not enough chefs.

Nice place - average food

By Søren L |

In SA for business and took a couple of business partners out for dinner. Great style restaurant and welcoming staff. We ordered steak and fish. The fish was ok, but a very small piece. The steak was not good - taste of grill great, but to much of it were uneatable. The worst thing was the sauce bearnaise - somebody please learn the Chef to prepare a real bearnaise!!!

Well Worth the Walk

By Tidebound |

Liked the reviews and information on both TripAdvisor and Yelp. Went for it and Maverick met and exceeded all expectations. Staff is well informed on the menu and the sommelier was personable, professional, and knew the list well. We went family style for our party of four. Kale salad, Salmon, pork schnitzel, potato pave, and root vegetables. All exceptionally well prepared and presented. Would go back without a moments hesitation.

Great service paired with culinary inconsistencies

By BDH1PVR |

We dined on a recent Saturday night and found there to be a few bright spots (service and ambience), yet the food quality has brought down the overall rating. The atmosphere is lively and fun. The restaurant was full of groups and couples all seeming to have a nice time. Our server, Sebastian, was well versed in the menu and wine list. Also, he really just seemed to be a happy person, which makes for a nice dining experience. The culinary highlight was the calamari and octopus starter. Abundant and well-seasoned, this dish is a nice concept and execution. Unfortunately, that was the only dish that we really enjoyed. I understand the restaurant is going for "bold flavor profiles" and I applaud the effort. That said, "bold" was really not part of the equation in our case. The flat iron steak was cooked to the right temperature, yet the salt was overwhelming to the point that we could discern no other flavors. The potato pave was on the other end of the spectrum, with no seasoning at all. (I suppose it is better to be lacking, as I can always add). The interior of the perfectly sized cubes were still cool and firm - on the borderline of raw potato. Finally, the charred broccoli raab was so smoky that it was inedible. Of the 3 plates that came out together, this was the one I mentioned to the server as we could not continue. There was no chance to taste the hoisin sauce as it was pure charcoal taste. I have read other reviews and know friends who have dined here; I think maybe we just came at a wrong moment in time. Given that I like the concept, enjoyed the room and was thrilled by the service, I would come again to give another chance.

Plenty of Style, Not Enough Substance

By Cedevine |

Maverick is a handsome spot. So handsome, in fact, that the build-out outshines just about every other San Antonio restaurant in which I've eaten. The charm, unfortunately, ends there. I wanted to enjoy dinner at Maverick, but it stumbled over and over again. The bumpy ride started as we attempted to claim our reservation--the hostess stand was completely abandoned for long periods of time and it was unclear whether a table was being prepared for us or not. When we were seated, it felt like ages before we were attended to, and once we were, it was over 20 minutes (I timed it) from the time we ordered drinks until the time the drinks arrived on the table. A small-sized "Angus New York Strip" cooked medium was so tough that I couldn't bring myself to finish all 8oz, and side dishes all sounded much, much better than they actually tasted. How, exactly, does a restaurant flub green chili mac & pork cracklins? I'm not sure, but Maverick did it. Service, throughout our meal, was overly casual, sluggish, and confused. I may be back for a drink one day, but this place, in my opinion, is resting on its good looks.

Nice restaurant

By David R |

We wandered past this restaurant and decided to go in for supper, as the original place we were going to was closed. This is an a la carte menu, with a large selection of menu items. The food was very tasty and very generous portions, we ended up taking the rest of the meal back to our hotel. This was perhaps the best French onion soup I had ever tasted. I was disappointed with the dessert menu, but this could be just because I was quite full from supper. The cappuccino was not very tasty, but the staff explained it was not their usual coffee brand. They happily took it off the bill.

Great food and service

By wallygator44 |

Great dinner on Memorial Day weekend. Food was excellent as was service. Our waitress gave thoughtful suggestions and was very attentive. All entrees came in 2 sizes so you could have sharing plates or for those who may not have large appetites. Nice addition to Southtown.

Good food, Great Atmosphere, Great Staff.

By David G |

Food was very good, the pan seared lake trout was exceptional. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We dined on a very busy Saturday night yet we were not rushed to move on at all.

Lives Up To Its Name

By tgates5 |

Today, February 1, 2019, friends joined my wife and I for lunch. We were seated promptly upon arrival at a very nice table near a window looking out to the street. It was a booth arrangement with two chairs added - plenty of room for four. And the A/C blew right on us. Our waitress arrived within a reasonable time and took our drink orders while the A/C continued to chill us. We drank and chatted while waiting for our mains and when they arrived, I asked the waiter if it was unusual for an hour to pass before we were served. He said it was and sent over the manager. What fun it was(!) to reconnect with someone I had met at another restaurant some years before. She is very capable and outgoing, so we had a nice visit. She explained that it was customary for the mains to be served a half hour after the initial course (three of us had salads). Nevertheless, the manager comped the wine I had and my wife's cocktail. But, the A/C continued to chill. The ladies had trout (excellent), while the two of us had a pastrami sandwich and small piece of New Zealand beef, respectively. In the end, our wait person was complimented for trying to have the A/C adjusted. And for a few seconds, at different intervals during our meal, warm air did reach our table. It was determined that a competition of sorts may have been under way, between some folks who were hot while we were not.

Wonderful restaurant-best food and service ever!

By Debbie M |

Reservations were easy to make just an hour ahead. Our server Sebastian was incredible-very friendly and knowledgeable about almost everything. If there was any question that he couldn't answer, he found out the answer for us! The arugula salad was delicious as was the French Onion soup! We felt like we made a friend with Sebastian by the time we left! The prices were reasonable for the quality of the dinner too.

Great dining

Delicious food and great service. Small inside cozy atmosphere and Thank the Lord no music blaring! Good daily specials made us go twice to continue sampling the fare.

Perfect Date Night

By chereblair |

Loved the food and the ambiance. It’s not stuffy, but it’s not loud either. The food was delicious. The staff were so attentive and helpful, especially our waiter, Johnny. There’s paid parking right next door, or you can valet for about the same price. Or, you can drive around the corner and park for free/cheap if those lots are open (one has their name on it). Then it’s just a short walk to the front of the restaurant. Can’t wait to visit again next time we’re in San Antonio. Ps: if you’ve read the weird review about being seated based on how you’re dressed, we saw no evidence of that. For one thing, it’s a nice restaurant, so most people are dressed for a night out, but plenty of folks were dressed for the TX heat. Also, we didn’t really think any part of the restaurant would be a bad place to sit. There are some cool private sections, too.

New Favorite Place is SA.

By Dave D |

High marks for service and food. Server was exceptionally good...super knowledge of food and very attentive. Great help by others on the staff. Food was super. Meal of the day was the steak...just wow. Super tender and full of flavor. Pork chop was also great. Mushrooms too. We will go back often.

Split everything- you'll want everything - with a group!

By ZandieSchoen |

We went to this restaurant was a total of 3 couples. We were able to order drinks, split appetizers and entrees, as well as dessert for an absolutely spectacular evening! Every single thing is delicious, and I highly recommend splitting like family style so that you can try it all! We will be back again! Be mindful that everything is ala carte, so it is also more economical to split!

One of the new great restaurants in San Antonio

By Gary B |

In full disclosure, we have known the principal owner of this new SA restaurant for almost thirty years, but this was my first visit. Also, I am an architect, so not only do I look for great food, wine, and service; but the attention to detail is critical. Maverick scored high on all points. It’s location is just south of Cesar Chavez Blvd on South Saint Mary’s St. right next to an old San Antonio favorite, El Mirador. Unfortunately, El Mirador has changed hands a couple years back and abandoned many of the things that made it such a success for decades. Th Maverick is in a very simple one story retail/commercial building that has attempted to be many things through the years. The Maverick owners have taken out several old walls that subdivided the building, exposed the original brick work, and opened the ceiling to the old wooden joists painted black. The front dining room is airy with plenty of light. There is a long bar and being solo today, elected to sit there. The service was quick and although the bartender had others to serve, always seemed to be there when I needed something. I had the luncheon pork sandwich on a toasted bun with a delicious simple garden salad. That and a nice glass of Shiraz made a perfect lunch. I’ll certainly be back soon. I understand that the dinner menu is really good.

New Local San Antonio Eatery

By Brenda B |

We are here from our Ohio visiting with our kids and we wanted to check out this new place they had heard about. The wait staff was attentive but not extremely knowledgeable as this place is new. The food was good, but the steak (filet) my daughter ordered was not cooked to med well correctly. The gnocchi was excellent as were the cocktails. The atmosphere and ambiance we also very pleasing. Once they get a few kinks worked out this place will rate for us as excellent.

Fabulous Everything!

By Terri S |

Would totally recommend. Great menu, customer service and atmosphere. Went there with a group of about 12. Everything was spot on perfect.

We Will Be Back

By RickT_SA |

We finally tried this place out with another couple and were quite pleased. The decor and atmosphere are cozy and classy. You can actually have a conversation. Our server was very good about explaining anything on the menu and keeping our water filled, etc. Two of us had the daily special, which was Coq Au Vin. At $25, including salad and desert, it was very good and a good value. Another entree was the pork schnitzel, which was huge and had a very good sauce. I had the Angus New York strip. Frankly I have had better steaks, but it was still pretty good. Could have used a little more seasoning. For sides we had the brussels sprouts and the cauliflower. They were very well prepared with interesting seasonings. Highly recommend. We did think the calamari appetizer was a little overpriced for what you got. And they are pretty proud of the wine by the glass too. But overall, we felt this place still deserves an excellent rating.

Easy access from downtown San Antonio

By Susan W |

Maverick does a great job of putting a Texas spin on familiar dishes. The ambiance is great and the service is lovely. Try the gougere with a cocktail....it is a lovely way to start a memorable meal.

Treating clients out to Maverick

By Bill |

We were a group of 12 visiting Maverick with mostly clients from Japan. The ambiance was great and the location was very close to the Marriott hotel which we were staying at. Pros: Attentive and friendly staff. Cozy ambiance. Different from typical river walk establishments Extensive wine list. Lots of desert wines. Grilled meat platter was very nice. Cons: No Shiraz and only only one merlot but it was a merlot blend. Menu diversity was lacking as most dishes were protein based. Appetizers were underwhelming and felt mediocre. Seems to be understaffed because our server was very busy but could hardly keep up. Overall, I think this is a good restaurant for a couple on a date but not ideal for large groups.

Fantastic presentations!

By oimbinjamin |

This place honestly blew me away. I wasn't expecting such a cute place with such fantastically presented options! I definitely recommend grabbing an Instapark spot and exploring the area.

Excellent food and service in a creative, comfortable environment

By Lisa S |

Maverick is top notch. Our server Cecilia was very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The menu options provided many choices and opportunities to customize. The Sommelier John was very good. I started with The Immortal Beloved cocktail that was very tasty. We had a Prince Edward Island oysters on the half-shell with with 3 different sauces. The butternut squash soup was very good. The New York strip steak with Bordelaise sauce was excellent. The beef was incredibly tender. The brussel sprouts side dish was absolutely amazing. All the wines were very good. They had a large selection of single malt scotch. We especially enjoyed a mini wine taste test that John and Cecilia prepared for us. This is a very special place.

Elegant and Casual

By Mary Jo N |

We found this place a short walk from our B&B and were pleasantly surprised at its upscale offerings. The Kale salad with almonds and apple was especially refreshing and the Duck Cassoulet very tasty. For dessert the Creme Brulee and the Profiteroles were presented beautifully and finished a delightful meal.

Excellent Meal Just South of Downtown

By Richard G |

We came to Maverick for a family celebration dinner and we are glad we did. We were seated in a generous sized booth. The waitstaff were superior, especially our primary waitress. They were very attentive, responsive, but not at all invasive. The food from start to finish was excellent. Appetizer was excellent. Our group had the filet, pork, and the mixed grill. Everybody loved their food. The valet parking was a plus.

Our bartender at our hotel recommended this place, he did not steer us wrong. We requested a view of the kitchen because that’s where the magic happens. We loved it, great service and excellent food. Foodie approved

Good Food, Drinks and Atomsphere

By Travelogists2 |

This restaurant wasn’t on our radar until a food tour operator recommended it to us. We felt safe as all tables were significantly spaced apart and saw them thoroughly cleaning throughout the night. Our service was nice answering all of our numerous questions. We enjoyed everything we ate (peppered tenderloin, pork schnitzel, and arugula salad) was great. The portions were large compared to similar restaurants of this style/type.

Beautiful place, great atmosphere

By Dominic23 |

Classy place, excellent service. Perfect for business, catching up with friends, or for date night. While, it has an elevated atmosphere, it’s still welcoming. We enjoyed the mixed grill and several tasty appetizers. It also offers a terrific bar which would be great for happy hour. Highly recommend if.

Metropolitan spot in San Antonio

By Josh L. |

I would come back. Food was good but be prepared for a-la-cart prices. Ordered the pan seared lake trout - was done just right with a great lemon sauce. Small local beer selection but an extensive wine list. Worth a stop when in San Antonio.

Spectacular food!

By Rsmarco |

Spectacular food, stellar service and a fantastic setting. I thoroughly enjoyed the house-made seasonal soda, while my daughter has a beautiful, tasty and potent cocktail and my husband got a spectacular glass of Riesling. We ordered a lot of plates and shared, octopus & squid appetizer, salad with goat cheese and beets, schnitzel, fish, gnocchi and veggies were all excellent and the Pumpkin Pot du Creme was a wow!!

Delicious and Love the vibe!

Outstanding! Great service, great food, great wine list! Everything was great! The steak was perfect, the duck was very tender and tasty!

Tasty food, a little pricey, great service

By Sebastian |

It was an very good experience at Maverick. Our waiter in the evening was excellent. He made excellent recommendations. While some of the dishes were a bit pricey for the amount you get, it was still a very good experience. The octopus and calamari was delicious even though it was a bit more expensive than we thought it should be. The porchetta and fish with pesto were both delicious. The following morning, we had brunch there. The doughnut was nice and fluffy. The Bloody Mary’s were decent. The crab omelette was pretty good as well. Overall, it was a very good experience.
