Had lunch at Max and Louie’s today to catch up with a grade school buddy. The venue was his suggestion. An ample NYC deli menu (and then some), great service, generous fresh portions, and a vibrant atmosphere. My NY burger was excellent and cooked to order. My friend’s pastrami on rye was meaty n flavorful. We lingered after lunch and the check just to catch up and our server stopped by to refresh our drinks. An uncommon courtesy. I’ll be back for sure!

New York diner, full bar, ice cream parlor, bakery, patio, event room, baggle maker. Keep the experience of NYC real in food and sports bar. Large portions. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Busy on weekends and for a good reason.

During recent trip to San Antonio, we ate at Max and Louie's twice in a week. The food in fantastic, prices are reasonable for a good deli, and the ambiance is like the great delis in New York. The corn beef on rye is as good as any in New York, Houston, Dallas! The blintzes were not too sweet, just the way my wife likes them. The kugel cupcake is a sweet kugel that is outstanding! The potato knish is unlike any I have had before with a fried, crispy outer coating rather than a doughy coating. Absolutely delicious! We cannot wait to go back to San Antonio for wonderful deli!!

Comfort food just doesn't get any better than Max and Louie's! The extensive menu features big breakfasts, stuffed sandwiches, classic diner entrees, decadent sweets, and just about any beverage you could possibly want. All ingredients are top-notch, so you will want to sample a bit of everything. Portions are large, the friendly service is impeccable, and you'll also appreciate the sleek, bright decor. While Max and Louie's has offerings for every palate, as in any diner deserving of the name, the meat options truly shine. The pastrami here is exceptional. Get the Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries, or add pastrami to a grilled cheese sandwich, an omelette, or the 1/2 pound house speciality burger. Order the freshly made meatballs as an appetizer, on a sandwich, or atop a plate of spaghetti. Savor the Philly cheese steak with melting provolone and grilled onions. Enjoy roast beef or turkey on an open faced sandwich smothered with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. The meatloaf is excellent, the patty melt is divine, and the chicken parmesan is the best in town. We have found many other favorites while working our way through the menu over the past few months. The Challah bread is perfection, as is the Matzoh Ball soup. Pancakes, waffles and Challah french toast are served with a generous ramekin of hot (real!) maple syrup with butter. The crisp-tender waffles also make an appearance on the dessert menu ... this time topped with ice cream and sprinkles ... but don't overlook the banana pudding and enormous slices of various cakes. If you do manage to have some room left, the authentic Brooklyn egg creams or the Memphis Mafia milkshake will do the trick. Whatever you crave for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and whether you sit inside, outside, or at the counter, owner Drew Glick and his team will bring a very happy bit of the East Coast to your day. Enjoy!

Love the French toast at Max and Louie’s! It’s made with their own fresh baked challah bread, so it’s like soft pillows of YUM, with the hot syrup that I just can’t get enough of. You definitely have to try it. They make their own bagels and other baked goodies. Anything you order is a HUGE portion and good food. Most times you will have to wait, but it’s well worth it!

No complaints from our group, which is unusual with two teens...pancakes!oatmeal!skillet breakfast! But the eggs Benedict on pastrami is heaven on a plate.

I was in town for a conference and found this place and what a find! (I am from New York). The restaurant is big and beautifully decorated. Really comfortable. The bagel and lox platter was so good, I had it 2 days in a row. There was enough lox for 2 people ( but I ate it all.) Potato salad was delish. Plenty of servers running around to handle the crowd. Had my food in 10 mins. The owner, Drew, checked on our table to make sure we were happy. I grabbed some rugelach to go, and it was really good also! I learned they bake it on premises, along with their bread. They are doing it right. I will be back! -gm

Although we had a 30 minute wait for a table, it was well worth it. The food and service were both terrific. Hurry on down for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We will be back to try more options.

We had many friends telling us how good the breakfast was so we had to try it. They we right! Staff was friendly and attentive. The facility was very nice and has lots of open seating. Everything seemed very clean. The menu has lots of selections and somethings you don't find at other restaurants. I had standard bacon, eggs, and waffle. All were cooked perfectly. Bacon was high quality and waffle syrup is amazing. Seems like a cinnamon - maple mix. The location is across the theater parking lot from the Magnolia Pancake House so they have some tuff competition. However, they have no problem with this and are my favorite.

Date night... a movie and dinner at Max and Louie’s. I think I was more excited for dinner than the movie. Turns out- movie great... dinner fantastic! Husband had the Rueben and i had the Rachel. Both sandwiches were piled high with meat (Warm, moist, very lean, and delicious) topped with thousand island dresssing and cole slaw on very fresh seeded rye bread. The fries were fluffy, crispy, salty, and HOT. It was a fantastic dinner the likes of which I have missed. Thanks for a wonderful deli. Keep it up. We’ll be back!!! Give it 6 stars!

The place has expanded its service area but not the size of the kitchen. We got there at 10:45. The place was packed and there was a private party of 50 in the back. Ordered breakfast and waited 45 minutes for our cold food. The order was also incorrect. We ate part of it. The manager was going to give us a $3 discount for waiting and cold food and an incomplete order. I told her I wanted more than a $3 discount and she became indignant. Told us to leave. I tipped the waiter and told him never again. This place has taken on more than it can handle. One of the help said they should have not allowed as many people in that could not be served. Never again.

Visiting for the weekend, a local friend highly recommended the Diner for its diverse offerings and NY vibe. We were greeted at the door by our host and an array of sumptuous-looking desserts which we closely surveyed as we waited to be seated. Although there was outside seating, we opted for a table indoors on this brisk Sunday afternoon. The menu had a good selection of sandwiches and mostly American meals. I chose the NY breakfast street tacos stuffed with eggs and chorizo and a deli-hash with a side of potato cubes. It was soooooo good without going overboard. A slice of irresitible Italian Cream Cake rounded out our meal. Overall, it was a great afternoon in a most welcoming eatery tucked away in a strip mall.

We shared a remarkable Reuben sandwich. The corn beef was some of the leanest I have had.Couple that with side of home made delicious potato salad. We could not resist dessert Italian wedding cake.If you crave cake this is place to go.

WOW great menu. Creative and out of the box for SATX. Felt like anyone and everyone is welcome. Friendly friendly staff. Clean. Definitely coming back! Cabbage roll: never had it and had to try something east coast. Very good. Frankfurter: good but wouldn't order again. Sausage or roll weren't extra special. French toast grilled cheese: amazing and just a lot of alot. 5 pieces of bacon, felt like 3 eggs, and lots of American. Lots of a lot. Too much. Had to break it down for our taste and would totally order the French toast again. Potatoes seasoned and good. All came hot and fresh. Next time will the calzone or pizza and bacon banana pancakes.

Myself and 4 other business associates went here for lunch on May 22nd. The place was busy, so service was a bit slow. Food was good and different from other diners. My issue came into play when I checked my charge statement. Our waitress, Louisa, decided that it was appropriate to give herself a 40% tip on my tab. I called to try and get the difference refunded to my card. I was offered the difference on a gift card, which I stated I could not receive since this was business credit card and I had to have this refunded to the credit card. I provided all the information I was asked for and was told I would get a call back. I haven't gotten that call yet and no refund for the difference was issued to date. Overall, this completely ruined the experience and I can't recommend this restaurant because of that lack of customer service.

Great food. Good burger. Hard to find good burgers. Daughter had stuffed cabbage, which she devoured. Grand son chowed down on lasagna Everyone enjoyed their meal, Only draw back was waiting to get in. San Antnio on a Saturday night.

Delicious French toast with special blend syrup, excellent restaurant! Best blueberry pancakes ever! Owner Drew is a sweetheart!

I called ahead with an order today. I asked if they had potato salad. Yes. After placing my order, the woman called back to say that potato salad was not available. Disappointed, but glad for the heads up. I tried to order the pickle plate, (usually $4.95), but was told it wasn't available. I asked if they could throw 2 half sour pickles in with the pound of pastrami I'd ordered. Yes, no problem. I ordered over $70 worth of food. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived, I asked the woman, who serving curbside pickup, to check to make sure the pickles were included. She went in and came back out, served a couple more cars. Then 5 minutes later she came over asked who had taken my order. I told her I didn't know the name, but that the woman had called back to say no potato salad. She knew who it was. She came out a few minutes later with a credit card receipt for me to sign. After waiting another 20 minutes I asked where my order was. It came out a few minutes late. I asked for the itemized receipt which I threw in my purse. When I got home, I discovered that I had been charged for a quart of pickles!!!! Don';t get me wrong--I love the food at Max and Louie's Diner; given the high prices it's a treat for our family. But to be overcharged for pickles is ridiculous! They should do better.

The restaurant was at full capacity and we almost left- thinking that it would be a while before we got food..... I don’t think our food has ever been delivered more promptly! The stuffed cabbage leaves were seriously perfect - as were the mashed potatoes that were alongside them. The pastrami Rueben was also very good. All of the waitstaff were attentive, efficient and extremely pleasant. Looking forward to a return visit! Portions are very generous.

The wait staff was excellent. Speed of service was also great. The food was so good. We ordered the Bleeker St. Breakfast Tacos and the Southern Breakfast Platter. We had wonderful food. There was so much food that we couldn’t eat it all. We wished we would have shared something because we wanted to try some cake!

On the way to the airport we were seeking an early lunch and found Max & Louie's. It is a busy place and does have the feel of the New York diner. There is a good variety of food and it is well prepared. We noted many people of different ages, with more older persons enjoying meals and friends. They have good French fries, and a very good Reuben sandwich. We were able to get in quickly as we came a bit before noon, but we suspect there would be a wait for breakfast and lunch as it got much busier as noon approached. If coming through the San Antonio airport again, we will come back to grab a good bite.

Wanted something different from the usual fare. Thought we would try this after a movie. This is a NY diner eatery. What an extensive menu from potato cakes to meatballs in a marinara sauce. Yummy snack before having a tasty Reuben sandwich with pastrami and a delicious meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Wow, huge portions. Food was excellent. Probably sounds common away from our local Mexican Food but it was a great change and experience. The place is loud and super bright lighting, so don’t go if you’re having a quiet, romantic outing. Plenty of sweet yummy cakes, cupcakes and other goodies. Super service. I’m going back !

Max & Louie's was a great spot to visit for a weekend brunch. The service was a little slow at first but given all of the people it was to be expected. I ordered the French toast and it was amazing. I would recommend it to any trying this place. The only downside was it was a bit pricey but, I guess that was made up for with the amount of food that was served!

Having been to New York, quite a few times, I was somewhat skeptical as I have been to "New York style" establishments that were disappointing. When my girlfriend told me she wanted to try it, I was keen, especially after reading the owners were from Long Island. I will say my skepticism was very unfounded. The food here is amazing, especially the French fries (which I am usually never really overly fond of), as are the service and atmosphere. If you live in San Antonio, or are visiting, and want a bit of New York, when having a meal, I highly recommend stopping in. Also, be sure to save room for their NY style cheesecake.

My husband and I have had this on our list of places to try in San Antonio for way too long. I wish we had visited sooner, it was fantastic! I had the grilled cheese with challah bread, it was so good. My husband had the BFS (burger, fries, shake) and it was awesome too, the presentation was pretty cool. The service is wonderful, smiling faces everywhere. This will be a place we visit over and over again.

I ordered spaghetti and meatballs, take-out. I had had it for dinner their before. Take out came with the sauce on the side. I would have liked more sauce. The meatballs are harder, more compacted than I prefer but I guess good to fill you up. The meal I thought was about $18 and change but with taxes and I guess a credit card up fee, I ended up paying $25 plus. Left no room for a tip and I don't see the point with the upcharge. I'll go back with cash and dine in but the prices are already high so the extra is disappointing to say the least. I would have tipped 5 but was shocked at the bill so tipping on take-out just seemed wrong. $30 for take out spaghetti? LOL, nope. I guess that's my mistake. As mentioned, the food is good and I will go back with cash for dine in service. I've done that a few times before and have enjoyed it. Staff is very attentive and friendly.

Waiting in line is worth the time. Breakfast French Toast great, Missed the blintzes though. Cabbage rolls outstanding

I've had the joy of eating here a few times for both breakfast and lunch. My breakfast is simple, eggs and bacon but their oatmeal and muffins are very good also. My wife loves their pancakes and their butter-syrup is really special. For lunch the pastrami was good but the turkey club has got me hooked! It is just outstanding and you can easily take half of it home for a second meal (I have!). A diner with a bar excites my wife as a Bloody Mary or Mimosa with her omelet is just heaven. In short, the service is top notch, the food is wonderful and it's as close to NY as you can get in SA!

San Antonio is not known for its delis so this place is better than nothing. Food is alright but quite pricey for what you get. For those of us who have tried real East Coast delis this is still a far cry from the real McCoy. They roll their meat to make it look like you get a healthy stack of meat but in reality when you unroll it and lay it on the bread it is only 3-4 slices of meat.

Great Deli menu very good service but the sandwitches are spot on Deli. They have a very large menu and everyone can find a perfect selection here.

We were out and went to Magnolia Haus for breakfast, but too many people waiting outside to get in. M & L diner is just 300 yards away and figured we give it a try. That was the first mistake. Food wasn't good, the thermostat was set at around 60 and the overhead fans made it worse. We were charged for a French Toast platter instead of just the French Toast. I won't go back and cannot recommend it either.

I will say that if you can get there early especially on the weekends because this place gets packed. We waited about 35 minutes but it was completely worth it! They have a good sized menu so everyone in your group should be able to find something that they like. I went with an omelette and my g/f a patty melt. I can easily say that you won't leave this place hungry as the portion sizes are huge. Our service was great and the prices reasonable in this friendly establishment, what else could you want.

Great variety and flavorful choices. Entrees and sandwiches expensive but large serving sizes.. Tasty large burgers.

It was so hard to make a selection - the sandwiches were piled high with delicious meats. The knish was so flavorful and had a nice crunch on the outside. I'd never had chopped liver so decided the try that and it was a wonderful choice, served with some great bagel chips.

YUMMY !! Heard about this place from a friend & it didn’t disappoint. I had the French toast 2 eggs over easy & 2 sausage links . This potato pancake thing .. O-M- GAGA . It was amazing . The French toast is to die for . It’s probably the best French toast I’ve ever had . The bathroom is immaculate. My server Addison was a total sweetheart. I came an hour before closing & he never made me feel rushed . I will be back

this place may be good for breakfast but their sandwiches are horrible. they deli meat is made by them and should be buried under their dumpster in the back of the store. the meat is so bad that they cut it up very thick and roll it up like toilet paper . the sandwiches are so big that no one person could eat but don't worry they charge you for the cost of 2. 16.00 for a pain sandwish is way to much for the quality of this lousy sandwich. i should have guessed when i was there for dinner and people were ordering breakfast. the only thing new york about this deli is the dirty condiments on the table. New York would put a hit out on these imposters if they new

Hot Pastrami- Perfection. Brooklyn Burger- Spot on. Juicy and full of flavor. Blueberry Pancakes- Addicting. Mimosa- Yummy. Homemade Cherry Soda- Hands down, best I've had in years. Milkshake- I could only handle a taste after stuffing myself with food, and it was scrumptious. Shall I go on? Breakfast served ALL DAY! Happy, chill atmosphere. Exceptional service every time. It's impossible to leave there in a bad mood because their smiles are contagious. 100% recommend.

We are from Florida and happened upon them by chance. We are glad we did. The portions are huge and the prices were fair for what you get. The food was awesome and we could not finish it all. The matzah ball soup was awesome. Would come again on my next visit.

My wife had never been to NY. Saw this on SA Live TV show. Invited NY wife for Valentine's lunch to give her a taste of NY. What a great treat. Great food atmosphere and service! Can't wait to come back👍

We have been here 3 times. The food is always delicious. The service has improved greatly since our last visit... they have also expanded and the restaurant is now twice the size. We have tried their omelet, breakfast special and pancakes... always a delight. Oh and their in house bread is super Yummy.

We finally got a NY style dinner here in San Antonio that is worth bragging about. It' bright colorful decor is true dinner style with tables and booths as well as bar top seating and eating. Wine, beer, hard liquor and champagne are available. It gets crowded so get there early. The food is delicious. Come hungry...the portions are really big. We have tried just about everything on the menu. The Cabbage Rolls are yummy and big so we order them off of the Appetizers menu. The Matzah Ball soup is tasty (not as good as mine but close). Order the meat balls as an appetizer. Two huge meatballs with bagel chips and just the right amount of tomato sauce. They will go fast. There is something for everyone so if your dinner party doesn't care for chopped liver sandwich your going to be ok. Hamburgers and milkshakes are also on the menu. The owners are on site everyday meeting the customers at the front door and working in the kitchen. Quality control! It's noisy, vibrant and busy...again...go early or your going to have to wait for a table.

High quality ingredients. The sausage and bacon are high quality cuts of meat, not greasy. Oatmeal and challah breas great texture and flavor. Combinations that might be seem strange for a Native Texan (grilled cheese french toast) are well prepared and make you want to try different things.

Had high hopes for this place, it was packed! I ordered the meatloaf and my wife ordered the chicken Parmigiana. My meatloaf was good, very simple affair with brown beef gravy. The mashed potatoes appeared to be from scratch. I’d give the plate a solid 7/10. My wife’s was bad though, the breading was fried black. She tried to eat it because she didn’t want to make a fuss. 15% into the sandwich; she quit. The waitress came after both our drinks were empty and asked about a to-go box. I pointed it out and she said she’d take care of it. She took $6 off the check. Never experienced a “discount” for food that wasn’t up to standards. Normally they just take it off the check. Have to say it was a bad decision; I would have gone back but anyplace that doesn’t stand completely behind their product isn’t worth going too. If you go, stick with pancakes. Seems like we were the only ones not ordering them. Pancakes are hard to screw up too; should be safe.

We went here for breakfast this morning and were extremely pleased. The hash with fried egg on top was delicious and the portion size was huge. I had to have a take home box for the left over. The other thing we ordered was eggs Benedict and they were equally delicious. In addition we ordered the NY style bagel and it did not disappoint. This deli is well worth your time and money.

Went for breakfast which is served all day. Lunch and dinner menu looked yummy. Could have spit the meal. A lot of food. Will go back, soon.

The staff is super friendly in this extremely clean diner! Love the NY Diner decor! But the best is the food!!! Everything fresh and presented beautifully! We wanted to try a couple things so, started with the Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Bacon on Challah Bread!! It was awesome! Then we had the Burger/Shake combo... Burger was great and the Giant Strawberry Milkshake. Another great choice. A patron next to us had the Blueberry Pancakes, which looked and smelled amazing. Will have to try those next time! This place is always busy during lunch time... but sooo worth the wait! Enjoy!!!

Great food and service. Portions are overly generous and priced are reasonable. An instant hit in San Antonio.

A great place to eat, extensive menu, food for everyone. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

I went for dinner and had the "Rachael" with corned beef and pastrami and coleslaw which was a good sandwich. Not piled as high as true NY Deli's but a good amount of meat. I went back the next day for the 3 salad plate with bagel chips (chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad over lettuce with some tomatoes, onions, and carrots) which was a lot of food and good although needs salt and pepper! Great people working there, it was non-stop for lunch on Friday! They say its crazy busy from Friday through Sunday typically, and my dinner on Thursday was definitely quieter.

First off, they have Bialys. That alone, if you are a seasoned New Yorker know what this is! They offer great mahtza ball soup and everything here is a true NY diner experience. If you are daring, try the Burger, Fries and Shake. And be prepared to be amazed and have others look in jealousy of your order! The breakfast pancakes are extremely good and HUGE. And two words...breakfast margarita. Yes you read right! This place gets busy really fast. Either get here early or eat a bit late. They close everyday at 10pm.

Got on the wait list for Sunday brunch instead of standing in the long line to get in. Was told 45 min. and 47 minutes were being seated. The waiter, Yakoy, was amazing. He explained the brunch menu and was quick with coffee refills. The food was fantastic. Pancakes, eggs, hash browns, sausage, home made biscuits and gravy. Filled us for the rest of the day. Yakoy checked on us a few times but not so as to be annoying. Five stars for Yakoy!!! If you’re hungry and want great food, Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, Max and Louie’s is the place in San Antonio.

Run as fast as you can to this place! We happened to stumble upon this place while leaving the movies, What a wonderful surprise, the place is decorated like an old time diner and if you Love New York style food (Deli sandwiches, Matzo ball soup, Potato pancakes, Egg Creams, cheesecake etc) you must try this place! the service was great! they serve breakfast all day and the shakes are wonderful too!I I can't say enough good things about this place! I will definitely stop again!

This place is GREAT! Be prepared to wait about 30 minutes. We had egg benedicts which were fantastic and the bakery item are wonderful too.

This restaurant is one we stop at almost every time we visit San Antonio. We mainly go here for their unbelievable breakfast, especially their French toast. I have also enjoyed their lunch, but it can't touch their breakfast.

First time to dine at Max and Louie’s and definitely will return the next time I’m in San Antonio. Great service and excellent food. I had the Reuben and it was loaded. A friend had the Patty Melt and it looked great.

Bad service we orders little food and it took way to long and we had ti wait a long time to eat but the food was good

On vacation looking for a place to eat breakfast and found this wonderful place! The food was so good, huge portions and good service! Our only negative was we were too full to get one of their AMAZING desserts! Highly recommend the banana walnut pancakes!

These New Yorkers have been Texanized. Everything is big in Texas and everything (but the price) is big at Max & Louie's the flavor, the serving size, the friendliness, the hospitality - everything.

Had a little difficulty finding it using the gps but the food was worth the extra effort. Its not cheap but my photo shows my leftovers! Good service great food.

We have bought bagels there a number of times and loved them. They usually do a bakers dozen (13). This was our first visit to sit down to eat. We had to wait 45 min in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. We should have reserved on the app. We each had Reuben sandwich’s. My wife’s had a mix of corned beef and pastrami and mine was all corned beef. I had a Dr Brown diet cream soda that I had as a kid. The sandwich’s were great. A woman a nearby table had a burger fries and shake all served in a giant shake glass. Looked great! Our server was attentive and polite.

Max and Louie's offers San Antonio a different taste...the taste of New York! I have eaten here three times so far and every time was a delight. Be hungry if you go there because the servings are BIG. At our last visit I ordered the Clasic BLT because I wasn't that hungry. When it came it was a triple decker with bacon hanging out all over the place...took half home. Our server, Devyn, was professional and quick to meet our needs. Everything on the menu sounds good and everything I have tried has been great. They have a "soup of the day" that changes daily. I highly recommend this place.

Food & Staff was wonderful! Great breakfast & Mimosas! It's a great value for the amount of food. We had an amazing server.

What a surprise..just like being home..Max and Louie's...you couldn't get any closer to New York City...the food was terrific..the atmosphere perfect...the restaurant was spotless..if you are from the northeast and miss the New York food..this place will make you very happy..large portions, large selection..just go Hungry..i promise you will not be disappointed....

I ordered cabbage rolls and I was served corned beef and cabbage. The waitress insisted that what she gave me was cabbage rolls... so, what am I supposed to do? I started eating the corned beef and cabbage. I asked for more of the sauce that was supposed to have come on the cabbage rolls, which prompted a manager to come and tell me that I did not have cabbage rolls. By the time I received what I had initially ordered, my husband was done eating and I had stolen enough of his food to where I was no longer hungry. When the bill came, there was no credit, no apology, no nothing. I asked for the cabbage rolls to be taken off of the bill and I returned the leftover lunch. I really wanted to like this place. The cabbage rolls did arrive warm, but were flavorless. My husband’s turkey sandwich was “bland.” His fries were barely warm. I would not recommend this place and will not be back.

Two times now we have tried to go to Magnolia Pancake but as usual it is too packed and ended up at Max and Louie's. And guess what? Love it! We love the atmosphere, the service and the food! Everything we have gotten on the menu has been great!

This is the best breakfast place, it is a bit of a wait if you go later in the morning on a weekend, but worth it. The menu is extensive and our waiter, Andrew, was fantastic. Great coffee and food. Would put this on my list if we were to return to San Antonio

If you have ever visited a deli in New York City, you will feel at home in Max & Louie's. It has all the basic foods prepared in an authentic, excellent fashion. Do not miss the opportunity to eat here; you will not be disappointed.

A man walks into a bar . . . rather it's a deli . . . actually it's Max and Louie's and that man is me. It's not a place like I had pictured in my mind's eye. That is to say it's not a frenetic Katz's of New York (a quintessential deli that all deli's should probably be measured against) with a crush of hungry diners yelling their orders to the ever so impatient gents behind the counter who are on a mission. A bastion of the hot and cold sandwich which are assembled here with break neck speed, shaving meats, slicing cheeses and fresh bread loaves, slathering on condiments with a single swipe to gen up behemoth meaty stacks between hearty bread slices that would surely avalanche were it not for the long skewers that tenuously hold them together. M&L is a kinder gentler scene with tables and wait staff that politely take your order. It's more like a gentrified deli with many of the sandwiches and other dishes that would normally be served in chaotic environs instead served in a waiter serviced restaurant atmosphere. I'm not sure which I would have liked better though it was certainly relaxing here with mostly baby boomer tunes Muzaking their way over the low buzz of the crowded dining room. What do you order the first time you try a deli? I think everyone who loves eating at delis has their own bell-weather favorite just like my wife and I judge a first trip to a Mexican restaurant by its enchiladas and tortillas. In my case it happens to be either a hot pastrami on rye or a reuben sandwich. Reuben did not make the roster for today's trip so hot pastrami it was. The sandwich did not disappoint with its layer upon layer of spiced meat like a cross section of a million year old sedimentary limestone formation with its distinct, individual and innumerable alluvial stratum. It was the monster meat sandwich I had been hoping for. The fresh rye bread, which I slathered with a goodly amount of mild deli mustard, would make even the staunchest of rye seed haters take notice with its surprisingly mild and unassuming taste. The plate came with a deli pickle half which had that fresh, short term brined, cucumber taste. The little cup of coleslaw was one the mildest I have tasted in a while. Just a hint of sweetness, not bitter or sour whatsoever, and just slightly wimpy soaking in a light creamy bath. Service was friendly, zippy and intuitive. I had tea and was provided with a to go styro without asking. One of the owners had stopped by as my sandwich was delivered to bring me some deli mustard and made a point of offering a goodbye salutation as I walked past the outside patio where he was conversing with a table of customers. Next time I think Reuben and the kraut will be put to the test, or maybe the stuffed cabbage, or maybe the meat loaf, or maybe . . .

Our waitress was good but seems their either training staff or just don’t have the personal to run efficient. Ordered the meatloaf with potatoes and gravy and everything was cold but the broccoli and they were still cooking the onions/mushroom when the food came so I said don’t worry about it because then it really would have been cold. Mac & cheese was probably the hottest items we received. Biscuits were cold and $7 way too much for an biscuit. The French toast grill cheese was cold and cheese wasn’t melted. Looks like it sat for a while and they forgot about it. Home fries were cold and old but scrambled eggs were hot but they were watery. They replaced home fries with fresh fries. This probably the worst experience out of 3 visits but don’t think I’ll be returning to eat cold food again especially for these prices. Also was going to order some cake on the way out and everybody that was working the counter just stood and watched and never asked if we needed something. Also don’t know if waitress had too many tables but never got refills on drinks or ask if we wanted to order more drinks from bar.

Went to this restaurant for a group dinner. There were ten of us and we had reservations. We were seated fairly timely. Service was very good. Food was adequate at best. I ordered corned beef hash breakfast. The eggs were severely over cooked and the hash was very greasy. Waiter offered to redo the eggs but said it would take 15-20 minutes. Not acceptable in a group dinner! We won't return.

Enjoyed the food, tasty large Ruben, but a crowded room, a little loud, and a bit too expensive. Friendly staff, helpful and willing.

This is a great place to stop after or before a movie at the embassy theater. Inside and outside seating, plenty of parking and walking distance to the theater. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner. If you want a real unique treat try the Grilled Cheese stuffed French toast. Go hungry and don’t plan to be hungry for awhile after you leave. Friendly efficient service I love this place.

Breakfast is my favorite meal, and I have tried many venues in the area. Max and Louie's is the absolute best for quality and ambiance. The first time I visit a restaurant, I usually have either Eggs Benedict or an omelette, and this time I went wit the omelette. It was perfect--fluffy, cook without being dried out, and full of flavor. It came with real potatoes gently fried with a bit of onion, and toast. Husband ordered the French Toast Cheese Sandwich with Challah bread. Awesome in every way. In terms of ambiance, the table have enough room so you don't feel your are sitting at the table next to you, and you can actually hear the conversation at your own table. I will definitely be returning to Max and Louie's.

My mother-in-law, a friend and I had breakfast at Max & Louie's on a Saturday at about 10 a.m. It was crowded when we arrived, and we were told there would be a 15 minute wait, but we were seated in about half the time. I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict, which was very good. The eggs were poached right, the Hollandaise sauce was delicious, the Canadian bacon was tender (not tough or chewy) and English muffin was crisp, not soggy. It came with a generous side of crisp, diced home fries, seasoned lightly with salt and pepper. My friend ordered the French toast platter, made with 3 thick slices of Challah bread, and let me sample it. The French toast was also delicious, especially with syrup. The portions were so generous that my friend couldn't eat everything. (None of us could.) The bacon that came with her platter were large, and very crisp strips. My mother-in-law ordered The Standard with 2 eggs over-easy and link sausage. She said everything was cooked well and tasted good. The only minor slip-up was that our server forgot her rye toast. We asked for the toast, and when it was delivered, it was only warm, not really toasted. Our server was polite, friendly, and prompt despite the busyness of the restaurant, and we were served in a timely fashion. She split our check for us correctly, and without any fuss. We enjoyed the 50's and 60's music that they played, but it helped to make the place pretty loud. Tables seemed to be cleaned promptly and well. Ladies room was also very clean. We'll be back again sometime soon for another breakfast. (This was much better than my first experience here with an egg salad sandwich that wasn't really egg salad.)

The food is so good and the deserts are amazing!! Love the east coast diner feel and the menu with almost 200 choices!! Staff was incredibly nice! Our server, Amelia was awesome! We can’t wait to go back!

This place was the perfect date spot! Friendly staff, great food! Couldn’t ask for more!! By the way there’s an @rexgabriel pretending to be me.. he’s obviously not me. Sorry to the businesses he’s been slamming here.

I had heard about this place so I grabbed my wife and off we went for lunch. So many great items it's hard to settle down to just one! I thought I would give them the ultimate test and ordered the Rachel sandwich. It was PACKED with hot pastrami, cole slaw, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing and on the best rye bread I've had in ages. It was AWESOME! With had a side of mac n cheese and she loved that also and it was quite large for a side. We also had their obviously made fresh on site onion rings that were really good. I can't wait to get back and work my way through the menu. FYI, they also have wine, beer and other liquor for those interested. Also the rye bread was so good we asked if they sold it. It was a little expensive at about $11 but it had to be a full 2 lb loaf, sliced at least.

At least for me, my favorite deli ever! Friends brought us along to try, and upon their praise of the best French Toast Ever (this is actually probably true - crisp light outside and amazingly fluffy texture inside and just the right flavor!) - we were ridiculous in giving as many things as possible a try. Matza Ball Soup? Fantastic! Not too salty, perfect vegetables, very flavorful broth with light moist chicken pieces. Turkey Rueben? Huge and delicious, plan to share! Cheesecake? We took it home for a later snack -- rich, dense, not too sweet -- I think they have them specially made to order? If I lived in San Antonio, this friendly, buzzing, vibrant and delicious restaurant would be a frequent place to eat. So happy we were introduced!

Before I begin I must clarify that these are not my type of restaurants. O like high end and on the sofisticarse side. I was invited to this restaurant and found it to be... a diner with a New York twist but basically same food. The quality was what you would expect from an unsofisticated restaurant. My experience in such places is to keep it simple. We ordered hamburgers and a salad and got what we expected not much more. If you like these types of restaurants this might be an acceptable choice if looking for something different, maybe a bit less comercial. They serve wine which saved the meal

I ate her for the first time last week and was surprised to find a New York City deli in San Antonio! The stuffed cabbage was excellent. I was with my grandkids who had kids' meals that they loved and couldn't finish because the portions were so large. I loved the deli atmosphere and the servers were attentive and friendly. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

I felt like we walked into a New York Deli yesterday when we went to have lunch at this local diner. I can’t believe we had not discovered it in the past, but it sure will be a frequent place we start going. First off, the restaurant is adorable. It was super busy and ran like a well oiled machine. The staff was friendly and efficient and helped guide us through the menu because the choices are immense. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and I walked the restaurant just so I could see the planting of the food. Portions are beyond Texas/New York huge! Feel free to share dishes. The deli sandwiches are a good 3-4 inches high! Everything looked fresh and clean. Our wonderful server told us they make a lot of their items from scratch or bring them in from NY. I fell in love with their side serving of a pickle and found out I could purchase them in pints to take home....and I did! They have amazing shakes and their dessert menu looked Devine. Anyhow, we are locals. So, if you love NY delis when you travel to the East Coast, we think you’ll fall as deeply in love with this place as we did. The ambiance is amazing. The food was outstanding and the service matched!

We dined here for both lunch and dinner. Dinner was great with pastrami sandwiches and cocktails... fun to sit at their bar! But, lunch a few days later was a disappointment. Both the burger and meatloaf had ground beef that was tough, very chunky, with bits of gristle and bone... unappetizing. The fries were just average and the iced tea was tasteless (watered down). So, we're rating them just Average overall for food quality. Friendly, attentive service. Lots of interesting choices on the menu. Off-street parking. Popular and very busy!

After purchasing Max and Louie's prepackaged entrees available at HEB, we were happy to give it a try dining in during August 2020 Restaurant Month. We arrived around 5pm on a Saturday and was seated immediately. Tables were adequately spaced to adhere to COVID19 requirements. Our server was CLUELESS about the Restaurant Month menu. Luckily I had the menu saved to my phone, so I showed her and she still didn't believe me, so she took a picture of it with her phone so she could "discuss with the manager." When our bill arrived, NO RESTAURANT MONTH prices, in fact, we had an upcharge for onions rings when they were on the Restaurant Week menu as a side selection. We were charged regular menu prices, even tho we strictly selected from the Restaurant Week menu. So I revisited it all again with her and got the WTF look, but she responded that she would have to talk to the manager. What? Again? Geeeeeeezo! It was very apparent that they really didn't want to participate in Restaurant Month. Our meal was 100% ordered from the Restaurant Month menu. We selected the HOT OPEN CORNED BEEF REUBEN sandwich. It was DRY! Cheesecake (yet another Restuaran Month item) was wonderfully delicious. Too bad the rest of our experience wasn't as good as the cheesecake! The $35 p/p charge was terrific!

My family and I have been looking for a good deli in town for years. Beside Shilo's downtown, which is inconvenient for us, we had not found one that satisfied us. Until Max and Louie's New York Diner came to town! We've been there several times and have never been disappointed. They are open crazy hours, so you should be able to get in and get a meal almost anytime. They are very clean and the waitstaff is efficient and friendly. The owner is always present and walks around the dining room interacting with the customers. How often does that happen anymore? DH had Hash and Eggs and I agree, it was excellent: lots of meat, vegetables, and nicely diced potatoes. I had the Bagel and Lox: very big platter of lettuce, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, capers, and cream cheese, and a huge portion of lox. I found however, that I like my salmon more smoked and thinner sliced, but still a great deal with the generous portions and a great bagel. DH has had the custom grilled cheese: choose your own bread, cheeses, and side. Using challah bread, it was grilled heaven on earth. I also have had the chicken and waffles: again generous portion of waffles and fried chicken tenders. I prefer mine together and not a separate items, but that's a personal preference. These were nicely breaded and the chicken was a good quality white meat. I have also had the Chicken Matzoh Ball Soup: large matzoh ball, served with tasty broth and noodles. Their menu is so large, we still have to make several trips to try some items, such as their Rueben or Rachel sandwiches, Hungarian Style stuffed cabbage, Romanian skirt steak, and someone (not me!) needs to try their Max & Louie: 1/2 lb burger with pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss, and thousand island. Haven't even touched the numerous shakes and desserts. We are so happy to have found this restaurant. Good comfort food at its best!

It is so hard to find good New York Style bagels in San Antonio, but we hit the mark with Max and Louie's. We were thrilled to discover that the bagels are indeed true NY bagels and all the other food is amazing as well. We plan to make this a go-to family brunch place! So happy we found it. Wendy (the hostess and owner) is super and friendly. The place is always busy, but worth the wait.

After seeing a Robert Redford film, "An Old Man and a Gun" at a Santikos theatre, we saw Max and Louie's New York Diner and decided to give it a try. I know Katz's Deli and this is NO Katz's Deli! The menu is really diverse and resembles a Deli of my memory, but the chicken liver sandwich I ordered was served on a rye bread that was not fresh. The liver itself was tasty, but it was a small portion; remember, I know Katz's Deli! The dessert, cheese cake, tasted too dry for a real NY Cheescake. For those people not acquainted with Greek and Jewish diners in the Northeast, this is unique to San Antonio and is worth a try. To be fair, my wife and I only had two items from the extensive menu.

Great place to enjoy a "NYC" diner atmosphere! Beware, the place gets extremely crowded on the weekends. Service was excellent and the food was just as good as I remembered during our visit to NY. Come with an appetite because the portions are large and you definitely won't leave hungry.

Max and Louie's New York Dinner is wonderful. Love trying the different type of food served. Serve was wonderful and did not have to wait. Will go back

Delicious early Christmas Eve breakfast of Classic hash & fresh fruit. The hash was tasty and VERY filling, enough for the both of us. The coffee was hot and fresh! Tasty enough for me to drink it black - which is no common feat! Very good service, quick and got us on to finish our Christmas shopping 🌲

My friend and I went to Max's after playing golf for lunch. I had blueberry waffles and he had a cheese omelet plate. We were satisfied with the meal. It was good and not too much food.

Being from New York, finding a true to New York diner isn’t always easy. We came for breakfast, so I can’t speak for real deli food. Service was great. Food was AOK. Would try again if I lived here.

Great experience. Reminds me of the deli service I grew up with on the East Coast in NY,NY and Philly. Get the bagels and the lox...

You have to try Max & Louie’s...kinda like “Lenny’s and Ziggy’s” in Houston...only on a smaller scale!

Went there on a Saturday for breakfast. Had a short wait. The food was really good and the service was great. My picky kids said they definitely want to come back. There were 4 of us and we had the pancake platter, the pecan banana pancake, waffles and French toast. We could have shared a platter. Our server was excellent!

Great sandwiches, cole slaw was perfect. Drew, the owner stopped by our table and was very friendly. Wife's bagel was a little firm so didn't know if dry or a real New York style, but prefer a little softer. Took a carrot cake slice home to try later. Busy lunch crowd but a little noisy

Great experience , great atmosphere, friendly staff and servers, had a family brunch here we were fascinated with this experience food was fantastic we even had deserts to go, we will definitely go back Im already salivating thinking about it, french toast was great and so were the chicken and beef burgers.

We visited while we were in town for the final four and were not disappointed. We chose this place because we saw they had Matzo Ball soup on the menu and it was Passover. We were happily surprised when we arrived and they had an entire Passover Menu! Very clean and nice interior and patio, friendly staff and delicious food.

Service was very, very slow and not attentive. Had to remind them to come take our order. Never received some of the food items ordered. Just finally had the items removed from the bill. Server would disappear for long periods of time. A visit which should have taken one hour ended up taking almost two hours. The food was OK but certainly does not live up to the advertisement.

Walking into this restaurant was a wonderful memory of the food I grew up with in NY. Went there for breakfast and it was so good we went back the following day for dinner. My husband had Latka's and I had scrambled eggs with bagel and cream cheese for breakfast. For dinner, my husband had the Latka's again along with Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage, and I had the Hot Pastrami on Rye, and both were delicious. We couldn't leave without bringing home a few wonderfully chewy and tasty bagels along with a few large black & white cookies

We selected the "challenge' breakfast for the table to share so we could sample the most popular items. Really enjoyed the French toast, bacon and sausage. Plenty of syrup with meals. Coffee was plentiful and lots of cream provided.

We love diners, and have been to many from Seattle to Maine. While this one wasn’t a historic diner car, the food served was totally New York! I had something I’ve never seen: a Philly cheesesteak omelette. It was good. She had a grilled cheese sandwich, also good. The server was from Long Island and definitely knew what she was doing. We will definitely be back.

Had a party here for my daughters graduation and loved the party room! Food was good as was the server. There should have been another server for the amount of people who attended though.

I'm originally from Brooklyn NY, so when I noticed the NY Diner in the name I was excited. This place is O.K., I had Cabbage with pastrami and I was little turned off when they served me a half head of cabbage(literally) and a few strips of pastrami. Everyone who i was with bragged about the portion sizes, but for me I'd rather have great tasting food than a lot of food.

After seeing several great reviews, my son decided to have his graduation dinner there. There were about twenty of us and everything was outstanding! The food was delicious and the portions were unreal!

Had the cheesesteak today best in San Antonio! Been here several times now and ordered something different every time and so far it has been excellent!! Can’t go wrong when it comes to eating here and the full bar is nice too!!

My wife and I enjoyed a weekday breakfast at Max and Louie's. I had Eggs Benedict and my wife has a bagel with a side of sausage. The portions were generous and the food was tasty. The service was good. We will return.

My wife and I have been coming to M&Ls for breakfast ever since we knew it opened. The pancakes are incredible and can honestly say they are the best I've ever had. The staff and managers are very friendly and engaging (when they can be because they're almost always busy). Nice, busy dinner atmosphere. Regarding their mimosas, they don't just splash champagne in a glass and fill it with OJ like most places do. I think their recipe is 90% champagne and 10% juice! Since we've been there for breakfast many times, we're looking forward to having lunch and maybe dinner there the next time we visit. If you haven't been, I recommend you try it. You'll definitely go back for more.

Five stars to the chefs of this diner. Plate presentation was excellent and food delicious. The two star rating was the host & server. Restaurant was packed & we were told we had one hour 15 minute wait & we would receive a text when table was ready. No problem chairs outside, shopping nearby. Went up 45 minutes later to check & was told it would be another hour or longer because there were 11 parties in front of us. Tried to make sense since we were told the same thing when we walked in! got no where so I said there’s other places to eat! Walked out then I got a text the table was ready. We sat down & got the server with an attitude. No smile, no pleasantries. I ordered diet soda with lemon & she brought water with lemon. My husband ordered French toast & she brought waffles. No comeback, the host corrected my drink. We are very big tippers I had no problem tipping poor. Max & Louie’s food portion was Carnegie Deli size. I should have 20% tipped my food only instead I will post those pictures! The back of the house rates A+! The front of the house needs in-service training on customer service!

First time there with my hubby! Food was fabulous and plenty of it! We had goody bags of leftovers to take home! The chicken Matzoh ball soup was AWESOME!!!! The cup portion is huge! Service was a bit slow for us though. They practice social distancing and getting on the wait list before arriving was easy! We will be back! Hopefully the service will be better next time!

My husband and I stumbled upon this gem today. What a diner! Everything from the lunch counter to the booths and tables looked authentic. I had the Hungarian stuffed cabbage with a huge side of the best mashed potatoes I’ve eaten in quite some time. The sauce was a tomato base...slightly sweet but not overwhelming. Hubby couldn’t decide whether he wanted pastrami or corned beef for his Reuben, so they made it half and half. It was gigantic and was served with cole slaw and a kosher pickle. If you’re looking for a true NY style kosher deli/diner...this is the place for you! Oh, and btw...also a full serving of milk shakes, floats and the cheesecake. And a full bar if you’re so inclined...

Amazing NY style diner! We were really impressed with the menu and the food! My wife had the eggs Benedict and I had the lox and bagel with home fries. The special this morning was biscuits and gravy so we thought we’d share a half order. We both thought the biscuits were probably the BEST we’ve had hands down. Nice brown top and soft and fluffy center. (Gravy was great too) I’ve been craving a good bagel and lox since we left Europe and this did not disappoint! The bagel was liike a great bagel should be! The lox was mild and not “fishy” (some I’ve had I’ve wondered about the freshness) with combined with capers, onions and tomatoes was delicious and what I remembered from living in Europe. My wife’s Benedict was perfect; eggs done to order and home made hollandaise. Service was great and it was a great meal. We will be back.

The food was very good and the restaurant has a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere.. the decor is great and very good service!

First time visiting Max & Louie’s, the menu was so mouth watering just by reading their selections. We had dinner and really enjoyed their plates. Have returned again and will definitely try their breakfast menu as well.

This place is awesome. Food is wonderful and the staff is great. They always go out of there way to make it a great outing.

Went with a friend who had been there before and had tried the latkes. We split a plate of latkes that I would agree were very tasty. The main dish I had was the stuffed cabbage...small meatloaf wrapped in cabbage. Very tasty. Very busy ambiance. Service was good. It is a place I would recommend and would go back to.

Hubby and I checked this place out after my husband watched them featured on SA Live. Very cozy deli atmosphere . Hubby had the Rueben .. which was massive and delicious ... I opted for the grilled cheese on challa bread. About 2 inches thick and loaded with gooey cheese!!!!! Absolutely scrumptious !! Will definitely be going back to try out other items on the menu!!!!

I really, really wanted to love this place. I’d seen their marketing. I liked the concept. And the restaurant was crowded at lunchtime, surely a good sign? (Albeit a noisy one.) But aside from Texas-sized portions with Big Apple-sized prices (and brisk and efficient service,) the food itself was nothing that would lure me back... not in a New York minute.

Finally tried this diner conveniently located next to my favorite theater. It was packed! Seating is tight. Noise level is high. The food is good and the portions are very generous. My friend and I split a plate and still had leftovers! We had the meatloaf, matzo ball soup, and a sandwich. Want to go back and try some other dishes. Reasonably priced and the service was super. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Although I wouldn't put it up against any deli on Lexington Avenue, it is a much needed addition to the San Antonio restaurant scene. Great comfort food, i.e. rice pudding, bannana pudding, matzo ball soup and French toast challah. Always crowded so be prepared to wait.

Hear about this place being pretty good and authentic. Well, after just walking in I could see by the decor and how close the tables were to each other that this was exactly what I had experienced in NYC. Menu was extensive serving all three meals each day. Looking around the diner at what was being eaten by other paytrons made it almost impossible to make a decision on what to order as everything looked sooo good. Three of us ordered the turkey sandwich which was very good, a ruben which was piled high with corn-beef and a triple decker. There was so much food that two of the three of us took home half of our sandwich. Had thought about ordering onion rings (one of my weaknesses) but so glad I did not as I could not have eaten them. Saw an order come out to a nearby table. The full size dinner plate was mounded high with rings that were the big ones and beautifully golden brown. Almost made me wnat to chang my mind and place an order. The three of us had a bill, including 20% tip (the waiter was great) for $50.00 Definately will be returning.

Fried shrimp were prebreaded commercial greasy "Mrs. Paul's" sub-quality from freezer awful. I've had better at "Big S" gas station. Grilled cheese sandwich was pathetic. Really lousy. Onion rings were from a freezer, again... awful. No kidding. Very disappointing visit. They could do better if it's on the menu, which should have quality. I wouldn't return if it had been my first visit.

This is a nice place to eat, the staff was pleasant and the food is really tasty and filling. The Ruben sandwich is excellent and full of flavor.

Fantastic food, huge portions, the pastrami was my favorite. I also had the turkey club, it was oversized as you can see. They also have desserts and shakes that looked incredible but we were too stuffed to have any. Sandwiches were about $12-13$ each and come with a pickle and a side of Cole slaw. Also serve some Frank's, huge variety of breakfast, meatloaf, other traditional American, some italian like meatballs, and I even saw chicken and waffles. The old school style diner theme was a bonus. Place been here for decades, owners are a pair of immigrants who worked hard and built something truly unique. Come here before a movie !

Neighborhood restaurant with a great atmosphere and terrific service. The challah French toast was to die for! Light and fluffy. Bagel and nova plate is a tasty -- very generous. My 1st time but not my last -- this is my new breakfast place when visiting SA.

If you are looking for t he quintessential deli experience this is it. We shared the Reuben with the leanest corn beef you can imagine.Try adding side of potato salad yummy. We had the Italian erdding cake it was very good.

First time visit to this great diner. Definitely an extensive menu. Good food with large portions. Accurate Rueben and great pickles. Try the fantastic carrot cake. Really glad we stumbled across this authentic diner with NY style fare. Our waiter, Wazim, was the epitome of great service. He delivered exactly what our group of six needed when we needed it. Thank you. We will come back to this gem in North San Antonio

I love restaurants, but like most things, we are often disappointed. Not the case at Max and Louie’s. I should first start out by telling you how I ended up there. I had visited San Antonio to go to a doctors appointment, after which I went to fill a prescription. As I was checking out, I asked the cashier, if she had any suggestions for lunch in that area. A young lady jumped in that was in line and said I don’t know what your looking for, but try Max and Louie’s. She stated it was a little pricey. She asked where I was parked, I told her I was walking. She loved this place so much, she offered to give me a ride. And that’s how I came to know Max and Louie’s. When I arrived, the place was pretty busy, it was a little before noon. I was seated shortly after arriving. The server, Clarissa, greeted me promptly, said she’d be right with me and brought me a menu. She had a sparkling personality, seemed happy to be at work. I ordered a pastrami sandwich, though I really wanted breakfast, a hamburger and an array of many other things. Everything looked great, I had been checking out everyone else’s food as it came out. While I was waiting, checking on tables was the owner. We spoke for a bit and he explained he was from NY and told me a little history of his place. My sandwich came up, and Drew, the owner, politely walked away. I had been to Carnegie Deli Manhattan, when it was open, so they had a lot to live up to. It was supposed to be the best in New York City. The sandwich was great, my ice tea glass never got empty, Clarissa did a great job. It was a wonderful experience, if you’re in San Antonio, you should try it. Max and Louie’s New York Diner 226 W. Bitters Rd Suite 126 San Antonio, Texas 210-483-7600 Sorry, I was so hungry, forgot to take pics, except when leaving.

We enjoyed a meal at this local eatery (located in a strip mall). The interior was designed to look like a 50s diner. They came close. The food was in many ways like eating in NY City minus the bad attitude. We had the pastrami on rye and the corned beef on rye; both were very lean, good flavor and larger portions. It isn't the same as eating at the Carnegie Deli in NYC but if you are looking for good food at a reasonable cost this is worth checking out.

My Sister and her fiancé came to town and I wanted to try a new restaurant for breakfast. I googled and found Max & Louie's NY Diner. So we went. My Sister got a waffle and home fries with peppers and onions. Her fiancé got French Toast Grilled Cheese and I got Challah French Toast. I didn't know what Challah was but once the french toast came out and I saw the bread it was on, I found out what Challah was. It was the best french toast I've ever had. I would only add some strawberries to my french toast to make it even better. I even asked for my bacon to be bindable and not crispy. The bacon was cooked just like I like it. We all liked our breakfast and I will definitely go again.

DELICIOUS! We have had breakfast and dinner! We’ve actually gone three times in the last three weeks 😋. Their meals are delicious with plenty to eat... we’ve tried the grilled chicken sandwich, the Reuben, the BLT, banana pudding, French toast, the Long Island bacon and egg sandwich, pecan and banana pancakes, onion rings... everything has been excellent. You will not be disappointed. Daniel was our waiter and he comes highly recommended. He is knowledgeable, personable, and entertaining.

The menu has many options, and as I looked around I saw huge plates with large sandwiches and other tasty looking meals. Chicken and waffles are one of my favorite things to eat, so I ordered that. I wanted to make sure that I didn't overeat, and that I'd be able to have some dessert, so my daughter and I decided to share them. This is a new item on the menu, and I assumed it would be a decent sized meal since at every other restaurant it's always way too much food for one person. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. When the waitress handed me the plate, I thought she was going to hand my daughter another plate with the same thing on it, (since we told her we were going to share.) For $14 we got one large, not oversized, waffle and 3 scrawny 2 1/2 inch chicken strips. I looked at my sisters build your own grilled cheese, and my mothers chicken salad sandwich and thought "WTH?" Even the spaghetti my younger daughter ordered from the kids meal had more food on it than mine did. It did taste good, but I thought it was a huge waste of money. The other three plates were heaped with food, and no one was able to finish. We practically licked our plate clean, and we were still hungry. Plus, we had spent almost twice what they had on their dishes. I'll probably return to this restaurant, but I'll never order that dish again. Also, they charge $3 for soft drinks, so be aware. Our waitress was friendly and got all of the order correct, so kudos to her.

My husband and I were both unhappy with our choices. I ordered the club sandwich that was packed with turkey that had an odd texture and absolutely no flavor. I ended up taking it all out and eating the bread and bacon. My husband’s pastrami was also flavorless. Where do you get flavorless meat?? Very weird experience.

I really, really wanted to like this deli. I may still come to like it because I promise to give it one more try. Not because they deserve it but because I really, really want to like this place. It was 1:50 pm on Saturday when we arrived and put our name on the waiting list and it was 2:20 pm when we were seated. I ordered the open faced Reuben sandwich with onion rings and my wife ordered the pork chop dinner with mashed potatoes and vegetables. We waited until 305 pm before we got our meals. My wife's pork chops were very good but the mashed potatoes seemed to be instant and both the potatoes and the vegetables were in her words, room temperature. As for my meal, the Reuben was barely warm and the onion rings were cold. I asked to have the onion rings replaced and they were - with more cold onion rings. I had also asked for additional Thousand Island dressing as there was only a small amount on the bread, and I got a very small container, not enough to be spread on 2 slices of bread. It was pretty clear that both of our meals sat under a heat lamp for too long and that the onion rings were precooked and not cooked to order. It was not that the flavor of any of our meals was bad, it was just not hot or even warm. I am pretty sure that Drew was not there but he should have been based on the extremely mediocre fare pushed out by his cooks. I really hate saying this because this place has generally good reviews and I love delis. They get one more chance from me and I will update the results.

Came here based on great reviews. We are from the East Coast and love diners, so thought it was worth a visit. It wasn't bad. Really expensive sandwiches ($15/$53 for small lunch for 3). The table next to us was there for the same reason. They sent their sandwiches back twice. Didn't think they were close to New York style delis. Although they were good, we agreed they weren't quite New York. Best part of the visit was the Brooklyn Egg Creme. That was worth the visit.

Great recreation of the "Northeast diner experience" in the heart of Texas. They have huge portions, and all the diner favorite sandwiches, and fresh cakes for dessert. Come hungry, and wear your stretchy pants or take some home for a second meal.

I am a transplanted Easterner and miss my bagels and lox. We were in San Antonio for a meeting and found this great restaurant. The deli sandwiches were thick like a NYC Deli. The White Fish Salad a Bagels were a taste of home. Portions are gigantic. We waited in line to get in, but it was worth it.

Perky ‘70’s music aplenty. Matzo ball soup has very fresh carrots, etc. in it. I like the option to design my own grilled cheese, so I had Swiss and provolone with onions and mushrooms. My date liked his burger. Several things I saw on other tables looked wonderful: a fruit bowl with sliced strawberries arranged in a pretty pattern around the rim of the bowl, blueberry pancakes with blueberries in and on them, a pastrami sandwich with a wad of pastrami neatly layered somewhere between baseball and softball size. The bar has nice local spirits —Deep Eddy flavored Vodkas, Tito’s too. The menu also boasts a nice assortment of milkshakes. I was very impressed with the diversity of the menu, although I did not see blintzes on the menu. Christian, the hot tattooed bartender is very friendly. This place has a lot to offer. It is currently being expanded, so soon it will also offer a bakery and deli for shoppers, as well as an attractive event room in the back.

Always on the lookout for good New York deli cuisine (born and raised on Long Island) and starved for it living deep in the Rio Grande Valley. Max and Louie's far surpassed my expectations. Service was fast, staff were friendly without appearing over-eager, and most important, the food was superb! We were a large party of 10 and ordered a large variety off the menu, including desserts. Everyone was especially impressed and pleased. A definite "go back to" restaurant!

on our recent visit we had the meatoaf and she had the pastrami on rye .. My meatloaf came with a big heap of mashed potatoes and three patty shaped pieces of meat loaf covered in a brown gravy with onions ...i opted out on the mushrooms . (the meatloaf sort of looked like chopped steak patties , but it works ) the pastrami sandwich was ,as usual over loaded with meat . There sandwiches are always a hit because of the flavor and the value for the price . We had to bag up the leftovers as usual since the servings were always huge . Thisplace has never let us down , always great service and great food .

This restaurant is fairly big and looks bright and cheerful. They also have a patio if you are more comfortable eating outdoors and the weather allows. We started our meal with an order of Potato Latkes. Delicious. Perfectly fried potato dish served with sour cream and apple sauce. My husband had a BLT with Challah bread that was CRAZY huge. Besides having an enormous amount of bread it had a lot of bacon. It was served with a pickle (not a big fan of that) and some great coleslaw that tasted super fresh. My husband said he could taste the cabbage. (lol) I had the matza ball soup. The soup is made from scratch and a bowl of it has two fairly large matza balls, some carrots and noodles. The broth wasn't as flavorful as a chicken noodle broth but it was good. This was my first time have matza ball soup. For dessert we shared a scoop of vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce. It was the perfect dessert to end the meal. I took home a piece of Italian cake. I have never had that before either. It was okay but not really what I expected. When it said white cake I was expecting a white, white cake. This was not. When we go again I will try something else. Maybe we will go just to split waffle ice cream thing that sounded great but would have been WAY to much to eat after eating our meal.

My friend and I went to Max and Louie's after playing golf. I ordered the NY eggs benedict. It was very good and I highly recommend it. My friend had the double cheese omelet. He was very satisfied with it. The only blemish during our visit was the service. The waitress we had was slow and not very attentive to her customers.

New York probably is the culinary "gold standard" for quality & creativity in fusion-eclectic, ethnic, & old fashioned comfort food. Claiming the iconic "New York" label sets a high bar to jump, & I think that Max & Louie's New York Diner passes over the top of that bar with room to spare! The ingredients of the food are clearly of high quality & fresh, as measured by my own experience & through observing the reactions from other customers. Looking around the dining room, plates are full, with savory aromas whetting my appetite, & everyone looks satisfied. The menu items offer a diversity of flavors & seasoning corresponding to different dishes. Menu appetizers range from homemade onion rings to pastrami chili cheese fries (fresh cut & homemade), & enough dishes in-between that you can make a delicious meal out of a selection of these "starters." The breakfast menu is just the beginning if you are a "breakfast fan." Poached eggs (correctly prepared) can enhance any selection of meat, toast, waffles, or pancakes. In other words, whatever you can image for breakfast (served all day) is probably available. Fantastic salads, soups, & sandwiches are all equally delicious. The Rueben sandwich is truly as good as any Rueben that have ever had in any part of NYC! This sandwich has a lot of "wannabes," but Max & Louie really nailed this iconic sandwich! And, don't overlook the mac & cheese (mouthwatering comfort food). Parking abundant & free. No valet parking. The diner is usually packed, so I suggest that if are like me, & have type of handicap, that you arrive early for breakfast or after the lunch lunch "rush-hour" due to the close seating when the diner is @ capacity. Open every day from 7:30AM-10:00PM!

I am from New York and was happy to find Max and Louie's on a recent business trip. The place is sparkly new and beautifully decorated. Real comfortable. I had this bagel and lox platter for lunch and It was so good, I returned the next day for an encore. Great! Potato salad was also delish. Our server got our food to us in 10 mins, though the place was pretty busy. The owner, Drew, even stopped by the table to check on us. He seemed to know a lot of the clientele. Grabbed a bag of rugelach for the plane ride home. Delish! I'll be back..- gm

We were headed for Magnolias Pancake House but their wait was 1.5 hours. We were asked to wait here but only ten minutes. The food choices are extensive. Our meals where authentic and really good. We’ll come here next time we’re in this part of town. They have a bakery too with sweet rolls and fresh bagels.

My husband and I were thrilled to find a delicious NY Deli in San Antonio. The Matzo Ball Soup was perfection and the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich was outstanding. Quality ingredients and reasonable prices. We will be back. I look forward to trying their breakfast items.

This is the third or fourth time that I have eaten here because this is where my friends want to meet . Each time I come I order something different to see if I was just ordering the wrong dish. Each time I was disappointed. They get an A for presentation then everything else is a busts. Chicken was overcooked each time thus tough and dry. Beef sandwiches are tough and very stringy. Fries, both sweet potatoes and french fries are frozen fries not fresh.

Great selection and huge portions. Food is really good. They make their baked goods on site. Everyone in the family will enjoy this restaurant. Breakfast served all day.

I love smoked fish and bagels. It was a Saturday night or Sunday morning breakfast in my family when I was growing up. Unfortunately we live an area without this kind of a restaurant. So when we are somewhere that has one we go. k This was an excellent choice. The White Fish Salad was enough for 2 bagels. I was in pig heaven. The food was great, service excellent. We will eat here any time we are in San Antonio.

If you're looking for something a little different than your typical breakfast be sure to stop by Max and Louie. I had the LEO scramble with lox in the scramble. French toast is HUGE. Definitely worth the trip. Clean, friendly staff and some kosher selections.

We decided to try it out, I got the Frank and chili dinner! It was huge! Big franks covered with some good chili and cheese! The fries are excellent! The wife got the Grilled Cheese with 2 cheese and some really tasty challah bread! She loved it! Said the sweet potato fries were tasty well!! Lots of food! Nice prices as well!

A very good breakfast. Good service and friendly staff. Very good parking outside the resturant and easy acess for handicapped. We enjoyed our stay. Regards Couple from Norway

We recently stopped by before a movie and we were pleasantly surprised. I love deli sandwiches and this place really does a nice job on them plus other items on the menu.

My maiden voyage to this restaurant was for brunch on Memorial Weekend Sunday. VERy crowded but they managed it well & met the timeframe given for a wait. In the meantime, the owner himself refreshed the ice water provided on the sidewalk & personally thanked those waiting & assured them the wait would be worth it. My hash & eggs was delicious despite the poached eggs being a bit too solid for my taste. Huge portion. Took home enough for a 2nd meal. I shall return another day to explore the dinner side of the menu - which is extensive.

Max and Louie's look-like - Piel's Brothers - Bert and Harry - w/ commentary by Bob and Ray radio personality's The evening was sponsored by Jim Hanna is a fiduciary in San Antonio and the surrounding area, He talked about retirement income strategies. The choice of fare was Chicken Parmesan, Fried Shrimp Platte, Grilled Salmon & New York Strip. All partisans had a Garden Salad Side - Crisp greens, cucumber, tomato, carrots and red onions My wife had Grilled Salmon w/ herb butter and with rice pilaf & broccoli. I had a Reuben - hot pastrami, piled high with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and spicy mustard on grilled rye bread with french fries. This was first time we visit to this diner. Definitely an extensive menu. The food good with large portions. The Reuben was great w/ 2 pickles. And must TRY the fantastic lg slice of cheese cake. I was really glad we invited to this authentic diner with NY style fare. The servers were Wazim, and was the epitome of great service. They delivered exactly what the group of 30 needed when need.. We will come back to this gem in North San Antonio.

Was looking for a good breakfast place on lazy Sunday morning and came across this place on a Yelp list. OMG....it was great. The coffee was the best, the food was amazing! Pancakes and french toast are huge! Both my husband and I were stuffed. This is a great place with great food and all at a good price. Can't wait to return.

Our family loved our breakfast at this place. They have a really large menu and their service was friendly and attentive to our needs. Only a 10 min wait time with near breakfast spots an hour plus. Im glad we took a chance on eating here.;)

The only reason this establishment did not get a 5 is because we waited 2 and a half hours to get IN. The wait time began at 11:00 am. We were told to return at 12:40 on the app waitlist. We went to a coffee shop down the street and returned at our waitlist time based on the app. They could not seat us. We then waited until 1:30 pm and were finally allowed INSIDE. You will wait outside or in your car. There is no indoor waitlist seating. We watched them turn family after family away based on the appointment time. We walked in to find 75% of the restaurant completely empty! 3 families were seated on the right side. Our waitress was very nice. The French toast was amazing. If we ever come back, we will check in on the Waitlist website as soon as we wake up and then get ready, wait another hour, & pack the family into the car. Be prepared to wait ANOTHER hour past your online waitlist time!

You get a wide variety of food choices. Ate the Philly two days ago, yummy!! My dad had the Reuben today which he said was excellent. Spaghetti and meatballs come in large bowl and the cheese blintzs are amazing. Definitely make this a place to try.

I especially love the meatloaf! Also, Drew, the owner, has made me feel more at home! I will mos def return!

I have been going to Max & Louie's since they opened years ago. Mostly, good food, good service, and nice atmosphere. Like many restaurants, the prices have really gone up. The last time I was there this August 2024, a single slice of cake as $12 (New York prices!) and I noticed an extra charge for using a credit card. If you are charging $18 for an omelet and $12 for a slice of cake, there should not be any additional 'gotcha' fees. Too much for me. I will be back, no doubt, but my visits will simply be much less frequent.

I am sort of a French Toast snob. I truly enjoy finding restaurants that prepare it as well as my wife does. We all know that if you start with quality bread, you are halfway there... I will leave it to you to go to Max and Louie's to sample the melt in your mouth French Toast. Take my written word for it, you will not be disappointed! P.S.- Generous portions and reasonably priced, I shall return whenever possible = )

My college roomie and I had a great time catching up in this classic diner for Saturday brunch. The Challah French Toast, bacon and poached eggs were delicious and the coffee was hot and tasty. Our server Sarah was a gem and super attentive. It was a busy place but customers seemed to be happy and our wait for two was fairly short for Saturday, 11 AM.

Awesome place to get a taste of New York deli food! The beef sandwich and the Philly Cheesesteak are awesome! We will be back next time we come to town!

Ate here with family back in August and was surprised that there was a delicatessen in Texas that was comparable with what I was used to eating at in NY! The prices were kind of high, but the food was good also. Nice looking deli also, and the service was good. I ended up having a pastrami sandwich which was good.
Very Good Food
Good food and very fast service. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, which was a little uncomfortable due to the lack of space in the waiting area. It would help if the waiting area was moved to the patio area on the other side of the restaurant so patrons are not standing right next to the people who are eating. The women at the hostess stand were not particularly friendly, but wait staff was really nice. Looking forward to returning for more great food!
