good place for a private party!

By LaurieB980 |

We came to McMenamins Chapel Pub for a retirement party and were pleasantly surprised to find the food a few levels above what we've had at some of the McMinamins in the past! I had the fish and chips and found it to be pretty good while my husband had a burger which he said was good. I especially appreciated our server, Joe C, as he had at least two things he had to "fix" for our meals when they came out wrong, and he did a great job doing that!

what a cool building

By Harleyz |

Stopped by here more for the atmosphere than the beer. Cool old chapel, appetizers were good, beer was good, but not great.

Didn't feel compelled to pray but gave thanks for the food

By AlbanyJimB |

Wonderful use of a space and the decor was fantastic. Many small rooms with seating. Quiet enough yet not isolated. Books on the wall shelf were very interesting. Limited menu but what they had was very good. Service was a little spotty but only because they were short staffed that day and the waitress apologized for the wait which I thought was unnecessary because it wasn't that much of a wait/

Great old building, typical of McMenamins good food and service

By John M |

I loved the old building, we sat outside under umbrellas for lunch. My daughter went back at night a day later with friends and the garden area is strung with lights. Great surroundings for lunch. Like many of the restaurants owned by McMenamins, the food and service are always good. Along with the usually fare, they always seem to add a nice twist to the menu.

Great for large groups and meetings

By CharityK13 |

This McMenamins is located in a former wedding chapel and funeral home. The transformation into a bar/restaurant was done well and there are lots of nooks and crannies to find yourself tucked into. Their Black Widow Porter was the crowd favorite and at $11/pitcher - our family from Hawaii was very impressed with the value offered by the food and drinks. The food itself is standard McMenamin's fair with burgers, sandwiches, fries, and tots - the cajun tots are the best with ranch. Yummm! Service can be spotty but no bad attitudes, so that's nice.

The ultimate decor

Awesome food, great atmosphere and an awesome, knowledgeable wait or...loved it so much. The seating was fast and serving of food also fast

Horrible service

By Beverley G |

We have eaten here once before in the early afternoon when it was empty and it was great. We returned on a Friday night, it was busy and they clearly did not have enough staff. After we waited over 30 minutes for our drinks order to be taken (my husband had to go to the bar) they told us they were short staffed. It would have been appreciated if they could have told us that before they seated us as we could have made the decision to go somewhere else. It took over an hour from us being seated to getting our food. We would not allow our son to order dessert as we did not want to wait another hour. I definitely will never return again.

Great Food With A Cool Ambiance

By JohnFromSantaClara |

We went to two different MCMenamins during our Oregon family trip. This was the second one. It was fairly close to our hotel. We had a bit of trouble finding parking so we were surprised to find the place having open seating. After picking a booth we got above average service from our waitress. I had the Newton's 3rd Law sandwich and my wife had the tuna sandwich. We also both tried different IPA. The beer and food were EXCEPTIONAL. The look of the place is definitely an attraction. They have the old chapel setup with windows and book lined on the ledge. The effect is really nice. Fun, cool room, great food and beer...easy *****.

Charming

By Cynthia G |

We stumbled on this pub, and are so happy we did. A former funeral home, later a wedding chapel, this has been reborn as an absolutely charming pub (although they have kept the organ and church pews). A little dark, but quite cozy. The bartender was attentive and friendly. I wish this were my neighborhood pub.

Charming place for happy hour!

By athena5365 |

Like all McMenamins properties it is interesting. It is smaller then most of the other ones I have been too but the bar area has a nice flow. I ordered a well drink and it was very good and inexpensive. The service was friendly but not exactly quick. Definitely a nice stop for a drink after work.

Sunday late lunch

By Tubamom |

It was a rainy Sunday and my sister was in town and staying nearby, so we met here for lunch. Very cool old building with lots of interesting features, several rooms, and an outdoor patio. Very laid back and steady business. We enjoyed the T-N-T basket, Reuben, and tavern green salad, iced teas all around and salted caramel tart with ice cream to share for dessert. Great server - she recommended the ice cream instead of the whipped cream - definitely a winning suggestion. I’d love to return and try out the patio when the weather is nicer!

Worst service ever

By rnjabaker |

Soccer team end of year meal, 15 boys aged 13+14, and parents so about 40 people in total. We called and told them we where coming so they reserved tables etc, and there was no one else in the restaurant, however it still took 30 minutes before anyone came and took orders. It then took another 30 minutes before drinks arrived. Then between 60 and 90 minutes before the food. 2 families had to leave as they had appointments, we didn't expect spending 2 hrs waiting. There appeared to be one server, doing both the bar and food orders, and from the time taken only one person in kitchen. If you want a meal in a low cost venue, I would look elsewhere, there are food carts across the road, next time we will go there.

Comfort in the "retired" mortuary

By drkiki2015 |

Having grown up in Portland, most of us knew that the Little Chapel of the Chimes was a mortuary in N. Portland. However, as McMenamin's does, they took over this historic little building and turned it into a pub, keeping many of the original architectural features. Winter or summer, it's a comfortable place to stop by for well-prepared (not really gourmet) food and libation in a most unique setting--a wide variety of foods for diverse palates. In the winter, it's warm and cozy--in the summer, the adjoining patio provides dining al fresco in a private setting although the restaurant is on a busy street. Great service--very accommodating!

Great Historical Architecture, Food and Beverages

By col2or |

After some chores in the local area, my mother and I were looking for a nice place to have a late lunch. I used "Trip Advisor" to identify some restaurants in the area and McMenamins Chapel Pub came up. What a treat for the eyes and stomach. Although there were few other diners, the service was slow throughout. It was mitigated by lots to look at while we waited and waited. Once our food arrived, we were appeased. My mom had a cheese burger with small salad, and I had the pulled pork sandwich, minus jalapenos, and small salad. Both were very generously portioned and delicious. The menu offerings are limited, but we were very happy with our meals! Oh, the beer is wonderful and there a nice selection.

Calm in the Storm of a Portland Winter

By IdahoGirl83716 |

It's thing of joy, grace and happiness when you are looking for place to sit and spend a few moments of calm and you happen upon the most amazing spot quite by accident! I can't tell you how the food is because I didn't eat. I can't tell you how the beer they brew is because I didn't partake. I CAN tell you that their crazily small wine selection has just the right few options to make you happy. What I can also tell you is the building was a mortuary in a past life and the McMenamin brothers resurrected it -- hauntingly, beautifully. What I can tell you, is the wait staff is friendly and kind, and it's almost mystical and reverent to sit and have a glass wine in the bar. Try the food and let me know....

LOVED the food, the venue, drinks and service

By Marsha C |

We went here three times during our 4 day visit. We loved everything about the place. The food was truly phenomenal and they had good beer and wine and appetizer specials!!!

Nice place for drinks.

By Karolpdx |

I was there to join a travel group event. I enjoyed a drink. I felt the waitress staff was overwhelmed due to our group. 1 person in our group could not get a drink.I saw only 1 server between our room and the bar area. The bartender was good. When I approached the pub a woman approached me asking for money. Several hours later in the darkness she was still out there and follow me to my car across the street. I felt uneasy with that situation since I was alone. I hope the pub will remedy this situation and get some security help.

Yummy vegetarian Hammerhead

By Inginalaska |

Yummy vegetarian Hammerhead burgers! Got the Cajun tots. Good beer, music and great atmosphere. We were there at 3-happy hour-and hadn’t had lunch yet. Quick service and all were happy.

Nice little pub is a not so great neighborhood

By 6595STG |

This pub is not in the best part of Portland, but it makes up for it in service, food and drinks. There are a lot of small rooms that are around the main pub/bar area. We were seated in one of these side room at only had four booths in it. The decor is that of an old English pub. The food is typical McMenamins pub food, burgers, small pizza, and Portland Weird sandwiches that are also vegan friendly if like that sort of thing. They had most of the McMenamins brews and the same prices. It was a nice place to meet for a business lunch.

fun

By Teresa M |

we returned to the chapel pub for lunch today after walking over from nearby.......we sat on the back patio.....i had a ruby, and my partner had a rubinator....next, i had the dill tuna, sub salad, and she had the communication breakdown with veggie patty, sub salad.....we love coming here with the beautiful gardens surrounding the building...i've been coming here since they opened yrs ago after killingsworth little chapel of the chimes closed...kailey was the staff person, and she was fabulous...she was so friendly and quick....other folks began to come for lunch sitting out on the patio too....the drink/food was delicious, and we felt so relaxed after a tough wk....thx so much!

Great Atmosphere!

By Cathy R |

This was our first visit to this famous Portland Restaurant. It was built in 1932 and the building previously held funeral services and later wedding ceremonies. Many of our group enjoyed some great beer; the service and food was also great! Next time we're in the Portland area, plan to go on Thursday evening to hear the organ music.

Large group birthday event

By celeste s |

History of this old refurbished funeral parlor, was familial for me, making it extra fun and special. The old viewing room, service parlor, and outside refurbishing remodeling is fantastic.....You can never beat Mc Menamins food and home Brew or hard ciders, which are my personal favorite.

Really Cute/Quaint

By C B |

Family members met here for drinks and a light dinner. The building was a chapel, converted into a pub as Mcminamins has done in several facilities in the Portland area. This one has nice outdoor seating. They have your usual pub food, but everyone seems to be able to always find a favorite to eat. The tater tots they serve are usually high on everyone's list. They have a full bar, as far as I could tell. They also had some specialty summer alcoholic drinks that were delicious. Parking is available right next to the pub, so that's a plus. Nothing fancy here but you can always count on good food and good drinks. Service was very good also.

An Interesting Place

By Charles V |

I call this an interesting place because of it being situated in an old mortuary. Not your typical McMenamins in terms of this setting. That said it's a well appointed local pub serving McMenamins signature pub fare, burgers, sandwiches, salads and of course their beer. There are multiple smaller rooms situated around what I take to have been the chapel, which is now outfitted with a wonderful old bar situated at it’s center. Just off the central bar area is what appears to be the original organ utilized in the chapels former days as a setting for funerals. If your visit is well timed perhaps you'll catch a musical performance of this grand old instrument providing the background music. I've caught it twice, but am unsure of any set schedule of performances. Okay, so down to some of the basics. First, there is a parking lot here and while I've never had an issue finding a vacant spot it's not huge. They have both inside and outside seating (weather dependent) and there is a wonderful wood burning stove at the center of the dining area where you enter the building. On the service side of things I've been here several times and the staff is always welcoming and friendly. This visit was no different in that respect nor was it different in terms of the long wait between placing an order and actually having the meal served. That seems to be a regular thing here and it's a bit disheartening to a McMenamin’s aficionado like myself. Thank goodness the food is consistently well prepared, proper temperature when served and tasty otherwise I doubt I would return. None-the-less if you’re in the area this place is worth a stop.

Brunch

By nboucher4 |

The atmosphere, architecture & decor made it worth the visit! The food was just ok. We've been to the Kennedy School & loved it! Planning in trying Edgefield next!

Trucker Grilled Cheese and Cider

By RSNN |

I drove out to see what the place looked like and to have something to eat. I decided on something different than a burger. I ordered the Trucker grilled Cheese and a cider to go with it. The Grilled Cheese came with fries. and the cider was an apple cider. I sat at the bar in the center of the room. there were booths all around at the walls. The booths had interesting pictures on their walls. or chapel design window settings. The front room where I entered had tables and a black stove. there was a door that lead out to an outdoor patio. And there were other rooms inside the building where you could dine. there is even an organ in the building.

Novel and cosy

By Lewoo |

Brilliant interior, cosy nooks to eat or drink in with a couple or friends. Awesome service! Loved the vibe and lighting.

Loved the ambiance

By Kathryn S |

This was my first chance to visit a McMenamin's, special to me, because one of the founders is a college classmate of mine. I loved what they had done in going into an old funeral home chapel and turning it into a restaurant/pub. The food and service were great, but I always love the ambience of different places, and this one was terrific. Stained-glass windows and the smaller rooms were very attractive. I would definitely go again, next time I'm in town, or perhaps would simply try another McMenamin's; would like to experience them all! I love that historic buildings are being saved in this way, when they might otherwise be torn down and disappear from our history.

Excellent neighborhood eatery

By Jeff T |

Great place to meet friends and dine while in North Portland. Next to North Branch Library and Jefferson High School, this little place is perfect to eat and socialize with friends. Had a small reunion with grade school classmates. Ate and talked in "Furnance Room". Wonderful side room with a wood stove to compliment food and service. Had grilled cheese sandwich and taster flight of brews. All were very good. Need to return and check out burger options.

Love this setting!

By drkiki2015 |

Having lived in Oregon most of our adult lives, we've been to LOTS of McMenamin's. The food is certainly decent and nicely priced; however, in this case, it's the setting--our favorite setting by far is the Chapel Pub. Perhaps it's because we remember it as The Little Chapel of the Chimes, a mortuary from our childhood, but it is cozy and full of Portland memorabilia that make it such fun to visit. The room with the bar and the room with the middle-of-the-room, fire-stoking furnace are out favorites. Stopped by here last week for happy hour on a particularly yucky night--very pleasant ambience and good service!

Good comfort food in an interesting property

By ErnestB60 |

From the friends who took me here, I understood this to be a local franchise that refurbishes older properties with an emphasis to retain as much of the decor as possible. This restaurant was in an old church with very interesting architecture. I believe that created the atmosphere for the meal we had. Mostly comfort food with several choices. I asked it they could turn my gyro wrap into a platter and they obliged. Very good portion sizes. Our server was very attentive to our needs throughout. I would defintely recommend this restaurant.

Average pub chain

By RamblinTrav |

The best thing about this place is the building itself, which is an old wedding chapel and funeral parlor. There are a few fireplaces that add nice ambiance, and the interior is interesting. Otherwise the service was unfriendly and inattentive, and the food is average bar food. The beer is decent but I'm sure that you could find much better in Portland.

Great outdoor seating!

By Bryan H |

There are plenty of nooks and isolated eating areas in this pub. We went on an unseasonably warm day in April, and found a great quiet table in the back (away from the street noise) in the shade. The food was delicious, but the service a bit erratic (fast, then super slow). I would come here again just for the patio atmosphere alone! Nice location near PCC for a quick lunch away from the school cafeteria environment.

Signature whiskey drinks were great

By Kimberly W |

And that was about it. We just went for a drink after dinner, so I can't speak about the food served. The bartenders were really not the friendliest, but were attentive overall. We went near closing time, so that could have contributed as well.

Cool Atmosphere

By sasdear |

We went for a dinner not knowing what to expect. The food was really good and the waitress was fantastic! It is pretty much pub food but not ordinary if that makes sense. Definitely not like big chain places. Give it a try. Oh and they are kid friendly. We did not have children with us so we sat in the bar area at a booth. No kids allowed in that section but we saw kids in the other section.

One of Portland's Best McMenamins

By calmtnman |

Many Portland neighborhoods have a McMenamins pub in them, but the Chapel Pub is one of the best. Even our 10-year-old granddaughter loves to come here, and has been for years, using the provided crayons to doodle while she waits for her food ordered from the kids menu. The fish and chips are great (so are the varied burgers and sandwiches) but Grandpa comes here for the Ruby raspberry hand-scooped milkshake made with raspberry compote and McMenamin's Ruby Ale! For those of you pub crawlers who prefer chocolate milkshakes there is the Chocolate Terminator that is made with Hershey's chocolate syrup and McMenamins Terminator stout.

take out available for food and beer during covid 19

By Teresa M |

during covid 19 some of mcmenamins opened for take out recently, so we ordered lunch over the phone yesterday, then walked over....it was ready in 20 minutes...we each had a veggie patty sandwich burger, sub salad for tots, 2 cans of ruby, and then added at the last minute, a growler of the rubinator to go...the food was very good, and the staff extra nice...she was excited to see customers, and we just said thx for being available for take out....we tipped extra big due to the challeges currently...be sure to do so...hope many of the staff get hired back soon...thx so much!

just like the rest of McMenamin's

By LaraDavis |

this location has the standard McMenamin's pub fare and the average beer, wine and cocktail selection. it also has the typical poor service I associate with almost all McMenamin's locations; this particular location had friendly enough servers, they just weren't any good. it takes about 20 minutes to get a drink, that's after you wait at least 10 to order it (this has been my experience in past visits to this location as well). I didn't bother to order food this time, but I did notice other people waiting for quite some time to get theirs. overall, it's a safe bet if you're in the neighborhood and you may get lucky and get prompt service, but my advice is to take your patience if this is where you choose to dine.

Cool building

By MrRodgers911 |

Awesome building great service and food was awesome. Came in for a quick desert and snack. Pjs cheese and roll is a prefect quick snack bite and the salted Carmel tart is awesome finisher with a Ruby beer.

Nice spot

By Saltyhair |

Interesting mcmenamins! Great server who was fast and friendly. We had kids with us also who enjoyed the coloring pages. Food was good. We are inside although it has some great outdoor space.

cozy and fun

By Teresa M |

we walked over for lunch last sunday to meet friends, and sat inside....i had a ruby, my partner had a rubinator, and our friends had a ruby, and a hot chocolate/brandy drink....next i had the tuna dill sandwich, and subbed a small salad....she had the veggie burger and cajon tots...our friends had the portland dip and one had fries, while the other had a salad...the food was plentiful and excellent along wit the drinks....it's so cozy there and relaxing...the staff was great too...thx

Excellent pub atmosphere!

By Taylor M |

I was in Portland alone for a weekend trip in November (on the coldest weekend of the season thus far, with ice on the roads), and decided to stop at the pub for dinner as it was very close to where I was staying. It is a lovely setting! The lady I stayed with told me it was actually a very old funeral parlor that they purchased and turned into the pub. It was beautiful, and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I felt almost as if I were in one of the pubs back in the UK. The food was good, the drinks were great, service was very good as well. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and very relaxing after a long day. I would definitely recommend!

Cute Building

By Jessica M |

This building is cute, but it is hard to tell it was once a Chapel. The building itself serves as McMenamins headquarters. The building sort of has a strange smell that my father in law found off putting, so we sat outside, which was nice. They do allow dogs outside ; however , that being said the servers are never too friendly. I live near by and have visited a lot, hoping for this to change and it has not. If you're looking for a good McMenamins experience, I would suggest going to the near by Kennedy School.

Dying For A Drink - A Mortuary Chapel Turned Pub!

By NeedPivo |

Here is a recent addition to the McMenamin Brothers’ unique empire of brewpubs, hotels and theaters. If you are not familiar with the brothers, just know that they (the McMenamin’s) are known throughout the Pacific Northwest for converting diverse properties (several historic taverns, a theater, a ballroom, a school and the Multnomah County Poor Farm) into a wide variety of venues, including many a local brewpub where many a thirsty patron can avail themselves of their (the McMenamin’s) own craft beer. Of course, Portland being Portland, there are those beer aficionados who continue to give mixed reviews to the beer; nevertheless, some of us beer lovers, such as me, do applaud the McMenamins for their brews - as well as the concept they have created. And now they have given Portland the Chapel Pub – this wonderful establishment that was once a funeral home! Talk about dying for a drink. Built during the Great Depression - 1932 to be exact – for the then exorbitant cost of $40,000, the Wilson-Chambers Mortuary (did I just call it “funeral home?”) was a showpiece of Italian-Romanesque design as well as an architectural gem amid Portland’s Piedmont neighborhood. After the addition of chimes, the building was christened “Little Chapel of the Chimes,” the name it retained until 2005 when the McMenamin Boys entered the scene to purchased the building. The Chapel Pub we see today offers several intimate areas in which to ingest and imbibe; however, the central focus is the tugboat-shaped bar that sits in what was once the original chapel. (Of course, the bar, itself, is not original.) Adorned with delicate wrought ironwork, this bar is certainly a unique place to quaff a few McMenamin brews. [See Photo] McMenamin pubs usually offer several types of beer, both year-round and seasonally; during my recent visit during the Oregon Brewers Festival, there were six on tap. In addition to the beer, I also enjoyed Thai Chicken Skewers, which can never be confused with pub grub. All of McMenamin pubs have a daily happy hour when beer lovers can drink down $3.40 pints. Located just northwest of downtown, the Chapel Pub offers plenty of parking; however, Portland being Portland, you can avail yourself of its’ superb public transit system of busses, trolleys and light rail that can get you anywhere mostly anytime. From downtown, Bus 6 should get you within walking distance of the Chapel Pub; additionally, Bus 77 passes through the neighborhood. Portland is a wonderful place to find a place to drink great beer in unusual surroundings. The Chapel Pub is just one more – and another reason for me to return.

Cozy surroundings and tasty food.

By Syd18 |

We eat here fairly often, and always enjoy it. In winter, there are seats near a fireplace and near a little stove, and in summer it’s nice to sit on the patio or inside where it’s cool. We generally like to sit in one of the booths next to the bookshelf. Our most recent visit stands out because we tried a seasonal sandwich, called Marla’s Magnum Opus, and it was absolutely delicious! It should definitely go onto the regular menu.

Cozy

By Kris_K_D |

Cozy place with a surprising seating capacity and a decent menu. Arrived early for a Saturday lunch and our choice of table. We opted for a corner booth near the bar. Service was uninspired-to-average, but the food was excellent, though the burger was a tad dry. Ambiance is top notch, as are most McMenamin’s properties.

Love the atmosphere

By Michelle C |

This is one of the coolest old building / restaurant conversions . The architecture along is worth going for. The food was very good ..pub style. Great place to go with a variety of people to have dinner and some great conversation.

We loved this place so much we came back the next night

By CallsignViper84 |

This is such a cool, quirky pub that serves outstanding beers. We first went on a Thursday night and as we walked in we were greeted by eerie Organ Music. Was such a cool entrance to a bar. The guy playing the organ did requests all night. Think he only plays Thursday's though. Beer was really good. I tried four different ones and there wasn't a bad one. Their standard 'Ruby' was nice but the Purple Haze was my favourite. We had dinner there the second night and the food was really good quality burgers as well. A table over from us had a massive platter of Tots that I wish I'd have been able to try. Service was very good and as said, we loved this place.

These places are increíble, I love the concept

By Lucky Travel Junkie |

This the second McMenamins I’ve been to, and I’m loving the concept more and more. The places are cozy, historical, entertaining, fairly priced food and drinks, and lots to discover.

vintage chapel pub

By Teresa M |

this pub was former mortuary, called killingsworth little chapel of the chimes. probably built between the turn of the century, and the 1920.s, it exudes such fine architecture. the mcmenamins transformed this into a charming pub with cubby areas to sit, have a brew, and some food. we've been here several times. we began with a ruby and a porter. very thirst quenching. we ordered the hammerhead garden burger, and the vegan hemp burger. both were delicious. the server was friendly and efficient.

Pub and Alehouse in quiet neighborhood

By David L |

This place was close to where I was staying in a B&B, so an easy walk. The setting and ambiance was great. Nice garden, rustic feel. I had a local micro-brew which was enjoyable. The food was good, had a burger and fries. Not remarkable but good nonetheless. Drinks and food were a bit pricey, but not too much. Service was outstanding. All in all, a good choice in the Humboldt area of Portland. If you are in the area, it's a good choice.
