The Schmitter is worth the drive

By Brads P |

McNally’s is the only place you can get the trademarked Schmitter sandwich. It has salami, roast beef, cheese, amazing bread and a secret sauce. Simply it is amazing. I will be back. I also heard they sell this as the Citizens Bank Park.

The Schmitter

Friendly Food, Great Location

By Stephen B |

The food is “comfort food;” great tasting and not expensive. This place is just what you want in a local spot. Long history and an “everyone knows your name” feel. But even as an out of town-er we felt like one of the usuals. Ann is a wonderful woman who is friendly and works hard to make the place great. The Schmitter is worth the trip!

A Chestnut Hill institution

By Kim5164 |

McNallys has been around forever. Sisters Ann & Meg run the restaurant and serve excellent pub food. The Schmitter sandwich is famous - and trademarked!! Our favorite is the turkey, cranberry and stuffing sandwich on a kaiser roll. All there meats are roasted on site. The coleslaw is delicious- super finely chopped and always fresh. The offer several homemade soups/ day and they are all delicious and at $4-6/ serving its a great, filling budget meal. The ambience is nice- very neighborhoody but doors open to all. Seating is tight and there is often a wait during peak eating times. Ann is the baker and her chocolate, carrot and coconut cakes are to die for - I'm not a dessert eater but I love these! Definitely worth a visit.

Good food and pleasant atmosphere

By Diane Z |

A nice unpretentious lunch spot, surprising find in Chestnut Hill. Friendly, quick service, fair prices. Hot pastrami was delicious, as was homemade chicken corn chowder.

Great cheese steaks!

By drinnc1958 |

Our entire group of 6 people ordered their cheese steak subs and they were absolutely delicious! The room was a bit loud, but we were able to yell above them all to hear our conversation.

Neat location

By Eswau |

Was in Philadelphia and arranged a visit with a friend that I hadn't seen in almost two years - he suggested McNallys for a Schmitter sandwich - which I had never even heard of. So off we went - seating was somewhat cramped but had great service and the sandwich was different - but good. Glad I can say I've had one.

"DELICIOUS"

By LISA C |

What a neat little tavern. The Schmitter and The Dickens sandwiches were to die for. Very tasty and filling. Our server, Meg, one of the owners was very friendly and shared her family's story regarding the Tavern. To end this very enjoyable lunch, we shared a piece of Meg's DELICIOUS homemade chocolate cake. Definitely will return and would recommend McNally's to family and friends. A little side story regarding our visit, an older gentlemen was having lunch and had received a call from his daughter regarding a problem with a real estate closing in Florida. This problem had to be addressed immediately, however the gentlemen was a hour away from his home. He needed to fax a document to his daughter in order for the closing to occur. He asked Meg if he could use her fax number to receive a document and then could she fax the document back. She did so with no hesitation. What a wonderful gesture on her part!!!!

Love this neighborhood hangout; great food and service

By PhillyWanderers |

Love the Schmitter, the prime rib special, the crab cake special, all the homemade soups. And the homemade chocolate cake is sublime. The carrot cake is a close second. This is a favorite place to go for a great, but simple, homemade tavern food. A terrific value and very friendly.

Good brew, sandwiches and family friendly atmosphere

By Kyle S |

This is a great place for lunch. The ambience is dark, warm and invitingly casual . A great place to enjoy a pint. Guinness and many other beers are on tap.For 95 years , patrons have enjoyed soups, salads, and sandwiches here. The Schmitter is the one of a kind sandwich created by Hugh James Mc Nally. He made the sandwich for his friend who only drank Schmidt's beer thus his nickname was the SCHmidter. This is the ultimate cheese steak and has it owns following on social media.

Crowded lunchtime

By saturdaydiner |

We had lunch here with friends a couple days after Christmas. It was crowded and it was ok. Decent basic heavy on the sandwiches kind of food.

Chew Philly tour

By Doob69 |

This was the start and finish of our Tour this time. The Schmitter is so good most of our group had it twice. While there we learned so much about all of the events that happen thru out the year. We know that a return trip won't be far in our future. This Our second tour and we were able to invite 3 other couples to join in. We had such a great time.

Scrumptious, sloppy Schmitter and fine draft beer selections

By Regina H |

We had a little less than an hour for dinner before a lecture at Chestnut Hill College, and it was just enough for a delicious (if heart-murdering) meal at McNally's Tavern.

Schmitter

By chetnluz |

I drive an hour and a half from New Jersey to come to McNally's for a Schmitter, probably the best sandwich ever created, with a side of potato salad and a cold draft beer. It's a perfect lunch.

A family-run restaurant that happens to be a bar

By Run2Ski |

Since moving to Chestnut Hill a year ago I’ve been to McNally’s more times than I can count, sometimes more than once in a week. The food is delicious and excellent quality, they don’t need to fry anything to produce great taste and flavor. Service is friendly and fast, exceptional even. The value is always there! Are French fries and chicken nuggets on the menu? No. Are handcrafted sandwiches from freshly roasted meat? Yes. Are homemade, from scratch soups offered? Yes, more than two every day! Are there daily specials? Yes, treasured recipes are rolled out on a monthly schedule. Dessert? Leave room for it! Come with friends or make some when you’re there!

A Chestnut Hill Treasure!

By TrixiePhiladelphia |

McNally's has been in business since the 1930's - it has a fantastic beer selection and the food is all made from scratch - portions are huge so come hungry. It is family owned and run. Famous for it's "Schmitter" sandwich (but I am partial to the seasonal BLT!) - warm welcoming atmosphere for the whole family.

Good, Friendly Neighborhood Tavern w/ Solid Pub Fare

By Grizzly9957 |

Tavern may be a loose description, since they closed at 8 PM on the Sunday night we visited, but the pub fare and friendliness were welcoming and enjoyable. As tourists, we couldn't pass on the house specialty sandwich, the "Schmitter," a stack of meat, tomatoes, cheese, grilled onions and "special sauce" on an excellent bakery Kaiser roll. Sloppy and very tasty, accompanied by ordinary, commercial grade ripple chips. Sandwiches were preceded by a special for the day, an excellent gazpacho, which wasa welcome, cooling starter on a hot and humid late summer Sunday.

Home of The Schmitter

By Jessica S |

This is a neighborhood gem. The first time I was at McNally’s was in the early 1990s. It is a classic. McNally’s is known for The Schmitter which is a delicious twist on a cheesesteak although they also have cheesesteaks, too. They have a full bar and expanded the seating area in the past few years. There’s a municipal parking lot in the rear as well as street parking. They make their own cake for dessert- chocolate, carrot, and coconut- sheet cake style. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is fun.

Smaller version of "Cheers"

By skyJim |

You want a neighborhood bar, with good pub grub, friendly service and loyal customers? Until this year, the only clue to this gem was a small brass name-plate on the door. No big sign, no advertising. But it was never empty, and usually crowded. The bar seats about twenty, and there are tables to the rear for maybe thirty more. Families are welcome and frequent; the fare is not extensive, but always well-prepared. The signature sandwich, a "Schmitter", is a gooey concoction with beef, cheese, salami, sauce and more - it is truly unique. Decent beers on tap, including Guinness and Smithwicks as well as locals. Service will be prompt once you are seated; but if you come after work, or on a weekend, expect to wait for that seat. Or sit at the bar, or stand along the narrow space across from the bar, with a little shelf for your beer. Most recently, I was there last week with my wife just to get a night off form cooking. Cheesteak for her, Schmitter for me, 2 beers 1 glass of wine, and I think it came to $30 or so. I can't say it is a great choice for vegans or teatotalers, but I think it's a great hangout.

As Good As I Thought

By Richard S |

Quite honestly, if Guy Fieri went here, I probably would not have visited, since I really cannot trust his show since he does does back flips for everything, bad and good. But since Todd Fisher of United States of Bacon fame is more reliable and less [or not] blinged-out I trust him more. I visited McNally's over Memorial Day weekend and was very pleased. My Schmitter was interesting and excellent as advertised along with pickles and the chopped Pennsylvania-style cole slaw. I was surprised how small McNally's is, but then again it's been there forever and people were smaller back then!! It's a real neighborhood place in a real neighborhood in the classy Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. If you go, don't forget the homemade chocolate cake!!

McNally’s Tavern Schmitter Sandwich

By williamaT7130HJ |

Stopped by to place a take out order and have a glass of beer while I waited. Excellent sandwiches, especially the Schmitter. Will definitely go back again!

Just awesome - every bite, every sip...

By Sean D |

Follow me lead lad and i promise not to steer ya wrong! Guinness, Chicken Corn Chowder Soup, Schmitter... rinse, repeat! The Schmitter is my FAVORITE sandwich I get out - its a cheesesteak but better, an evolved cheesesteak if you will. The soup is perfect. The Guinness is always right - great temp on it and poured correctly. This is not fine dining - but if you wanna be in the know you end up here... and then keep coming back. The owner is a fine woman who cares about her customers and about the area - the lady making the desserts is incredible. There are three options and NONE are wrong choices... I go with the coconut cake usually but really as I said - you get one you will like it!

Great sandwich place

By Jane A |

Eight of us recently visited this establishment and were lucky to get a table as it was packed, it is a fairly small place. The staff made room for us, little table in the back, we were kind of packed in but it was a cheerful place as the staff is really attentive and regularly checked on us for refills. I highly recommend their Schmitty sandwich and the cole slaw. I shared half with my son, our other sandwich was the turkey with cranberry, it was good but a bit dry, the stuffing on it is the best part of that sandwich. I would definitely go there again and order the Schmitty, it was really good:))

The best chocolate cake in the country!

By Jeanne S |

Fun for friends, couples or small families. The owner, Anne McNally, runs a great pub and makes it a great experience for all

Nice place

By Mikek686 |

Came here for dinner and drinks look closely at the doors when walking down the street because if you don't you won't find this place the Schmitter is great messy but well worth it check this place out its fun

Cozy pub

By hudsonvalleytrvlr |

Went to the wrong tavern next door and they were polite to direct us back to mcnallys when we asked. They must get this a lot. Delicious and good for lunch. Don't bother wiping your hands until you're done it is messy and that's that, not overalls greasy just juicy, We ordered the Schmitty sandwich and a standard cheesesteak which I preferred since I don't care for Russian dressing(taste of the sauce). The service was good, nice cold beer and hot food. Great place for lunch. Small place with chairs that dig in to your lower back so be prepared but ultimately a nice tavern. We'll be back.

The friendliest of services’

By TLP |

The Schmitter indeed is all that, go for double the meat option or you might go hungry, it is VERY good. Had the chocolate cake, it is sweeeet so be sure to order milk to bring it down. As out of towners we had maaaany questions, they were all answered with a big smile! This is a tavern so you have your bar and bright flat TV’s to watch relevant sporting events

Gotta try the Schmitter!

By Kim J |

You go there for the Schmitter which is delicious but you come back because of the friendly staff. McNally's Tavern is a great local pub in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. The tavern is still a family run business with 2 or 3 generations still working at the tavern. This is a cool find in Chestnut Hill!

Nothing like it.....great place

By Jerry E |

Sit at the bar and enjoy yourself...this place will make you feel like home. The schmiter is AWESOME.....TRY IT. The ball park does not make them as good as here. Jerry EHRLICH FROM the great city of philadelphia

Home of the "Schmitter"

By Wendy M |

Birthday dinner. I chose McNally's. "No Way" , "Way" ! I love McNally's Tavern. If I lived in Chestnut Hill my husband and I would be regulars for sure. We decided to sit at the bar so we could take our time. Tables are a precious few and most often there is a line of folks waiting. I like to sit at the bar and chit chat with the other folks. The bartender was friendly. He made me a wonderful Perfect VO Manhatten. I am fussy about my way to expensive drink of choice. He didn't have to fix the proportions at all. Soups, Salads Sandwiches and platters are available. Sorry no French Fries.I had a steak sandwich made on awesome Conshohocken Roll. It is just the kind of tavern that makes you feel cozy when you walk inside. Stop in for a brew or a meal. The friendly "top of the hill" historic McNally's tavern will welcome you. Schmitter sandwich find out for yourself !!!

Philly has two sandwiches

By lise24 |

Philly not only has the cheesesteak sandwich, but we also have the schmitter, which you can get at McNallys Pub. This is a huge sandwich made with steak, grilled salami, cheese, fried onions, cheese, tomatoes, special sauce (like thousand island) served on a large Kaiser roll. This sandwich is large - can hardly finish it - I like to ask for my sandwich lite on the sauce. They have homemade soups and other sandwiches. The Hubs and I had lunch on 1/23/15 - I had the schmitter and the hubs had chicken noodle soup and a sandwich special which was roast pork, broccoli rabe, and roasted red peppers. The have a full bar and homemade desserts. It is a small spot and get fill up quickly. Wait staff very friendly and efficient.

It's a winner

By chas575 |

We went to McNally's for lunch during midweek for the first time, having heard good things about the food. We really didn't know what to expect, but inside it looked like any other narrow, tight bar; there's limited seating fronting the bar area, and we were lucky enough to get the last available table. The food didn't disappoint; we had two really excellent sandwiches that were tasty and fresh; the chicken sandwich was perhaps the best I've ever had, in fact. The service was timely, and the waitresses very friendly. McNally's is not much to look at, but it's a winner, and truly worth a visit. We came from many miles away, and would go back. Note: Germantown Avenue is loaded with parking meters, but if you park on the next block over the hill, the parking is free.

Best Pub/ Tavern in Philadelphia

By Sheldon K |

I dare say I have been to McNally's hundreds of times and this is the first time I have written a review. Why, I guess I am little selfish. McNally is like that secret place that you are always guaranteed to get a great meal and a cold beer. It is almost like a secret club for those who know how to get there. McNally's is located at the top of the hill in Chestnut Hill on Germantown Ave in Philadelphia. Here is where part of the mystique begins with McNally’s. Chestnut Hill has tried to keep much of its old time Philadelphia look so there is an absence of flashy signage and neon. McNally's is right next to another tavern called the Chestnut Hill tavern which has a big bay window and a red door so it really stands out from the street. Many people have entered this establishment thinking they were in McNally's. McNally's is two doors down from this other tavern the second dark green door. There is a small sign next to the door which post the specials for the day but at night you are libel to miss it. As you walk in you almost might think you will need a password like it is some sort of speak easy. Once in be prepared to have some of the best pub fare in the city of Philadelphia. McNally's has a signature sandwich called a schmitter and a few years ago the Philadelphia Phillies began to a sell a version of this sandwich in there ball park. The sandwich at the ballpark was OK but didn't match in intensity and flavor of the sandwich at McNally's. I think it has do with the seasoned grill and staff at McNally's. I had a coworker tell me she had a schmitter at the ballpark and remarked that the sandwich was just Ok. Then I took her to McNally and she still can't stop talking about how good the sandwich was. The Schmitter comes two ways for the novice on a kiser roll and for the more advance on a long roll. The long roll allows for double the pleasure for one the best sandwiches you will ever have. McNally’s also has a great garden salad if you want something on the lighter side. If you order it with chicken it truly is a full meal. McNally’s freshly grills your chicken breast. The chicken is always moist and favorable. The soups are homemade daily. In my opinion one the biggest challenges is whether to get a burger or a schmitter. The burger is nothing fancy just a great burger that has been cooked on a seasoned grill it just exudes flavor. Leave room for desert because they are also are homemade and the carrot cake is to die for, make sure to ask about it when you order because they do run out. Since I am a local my biggest problem is once knowing how to get into McNally’s it’s not making eating there a daily habit.

A little Bit of Irish!

Friendly , reasonable prices, great waiters, good pub menu, great street to brouze and shop- close your eyes and think you are in Ireland.

THE classical neighborhood pub

THE classical neighborhood pub with fresh ingredient food - turkey cooked every day. And the amazing Schmitter!ssasandwich

Friendly tavern with good food

By John R |

We stopped in for lunch after a hike in the nearby park. The bartender was very friendly. They have a good selection of beer on tap. Their turkey chili was superb. My wife had a chicken sandwich which she liked. As one of the patrons was leaving, we noticed his Vietnam veterans hat and thanked him for his service. He produced a promotional card for a book he authored, Many Beaucoup Magics, about his (Tom Garvey's) time in Vietnam. We are now reading the book.

Seriously good! Historic old school

By 29paskier |

three of us stopped in to experience the "other" Philadelphia sandwich. The Schmitter. First: this place is small - maybe ten tables? 30 to 40 people at the most. maybe another ten at the bar. Old wood paneling low ceilings. Oozes history. My family had the famous Schmitter Sandwich. This sandwich is ridiculously good. Just get one. one of the sandwiches ever, anywhere. Also had the chicken cheesesteak...very good as well. The staff was super friendly. Home made soup was very good. be sure to stop. They have a specific way of doing things and it works. The table next to us wanted fries with a burger. No fries here...and thats ok..everything else is so good. Don't mess with it.

Birthday Lunch

By pbaccash26 |

Awesome homemade food. Excellent Service Delicious Dessert. Five friends went for lunch had 5 different menu items and dessert. All were wonderful.

Outstanding!

A local favorite! Best food we had in Philly area. The soups are incredible and made fresh daily! Friendly owners and great atmosphere. Love to support a family owned business!

Excellent tavern in the heart of Chestnut Hill

By Jaime1221 |

This is a fantastic neighborhood bar with great food. I always get the roast beef sandwich and it's so big that I can get a few meals out of it. It's rare, so you have to like that, but it's real beef and not processed. I am very comfortable going there alone, which makes it my go to place when I want to eat out.

This place is like a Cheers bar if you frequent often like we do. Everyone knows your name

By CrustyPirateWife |

If you don't mind a limited menu and a few specials each week, this is your place for comfort food at a reasonable price. They greet you by name and treat you like an old friend. Try the Schmidter sandwich and the chicken corn chowder is awesome too.

Prices?

By ChrisK2323 |

Still great food and location and ambience, but when did the prices go through the roof. Cheesesteak and chips for $13.95. I thought maybe they have two menus with local pricing and non-regulars pricing.

Fav restaurant ever!!!!!!

By Grace G |

I live pretty close to it and find every excuse I can to go if you have an option go on a weekend and get the chicken corn chowder it is my fav comfort food in the world. It's relatively small but is some of the best food I've ever had and for dessert the chocolate cake is the best I've ever had and that's saying something. Anyway if you're in the area you should definitely go!

Good food, good prices

By Wisertime |

Great burgers here. I don't say that about anyone's, since a burger can just be a burger. There's are pretty darn good. No french fries though. Small kitchen and small menu, but there is something to enjoy, especially if you like sandwiches. Beer/drink prices are reasonable, especially compared to other places in Philly. Old style pub with good friendly service. Prices are fair overall.

Had to have a Schmitter

By QTrain |

I was staying in Chestnut Hill and found that there was a nearby restaurant that served a great steak sandwich. Like another reviewer I passed by without noticing the sign but it caught my eye when I had almost given up hope on my return walk. Glad it did. I had the Schmitter as my going-away gift to myself on my last night in Philadelphia. Delicious as was my accompanying beer.

McNally's Tavern - Not Just Your Ordinary Irish Pub

By Classycook |

Everyone knows that Irish Pubs are the heart and soul of everyone's local community. One Irish bar in particular, McNally's Tavern is an institution in quaint neighborhood of Philadelphia fondly referred to as "Chestnut Hill." Why didn't I hear about this place sooner? Okay, so maybe I didn't know about this place because it blends right in with the local area establishments and there isn't an awning so the restaurant stands out from the rest. And guess what? THIS RESTAURANT DOESN'T NEED AN AWNING, A SIGN or ANYTHING!! While on vacation, I was searching for a restaurant that had the best "sandwich" in Philadelphia. And guess whose name appeared on every search engine? McNally's. They serve this sandwich called 'THE SCHMITTER". It is heaven between a roll. The sandwich was named about "Schmidt Beer." Don't fall for imposters, go to the place that made the original sandwich. You won't regret you did. By the way, get to know the bartender. He's really friendly, highly knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and sandwich and he makes you feel like he's known you forever. Be sure to bring your appetite and lots of napkins.

Fantastic pub, great food!

By Steven O |

Warm, friendly pub atmosphere, excellent and friendly service. Incredible food! For starters, their chicken corn chowder is the best! Their trademark sandwich, The Schmitter, is their amazing take on a Philly Cheesesteak! Even a simple grilled chicken sandwich, is delicious. Always cooked perfectly. Great selection of beer on tap.

A Great Sandwich!!

By David P |

The Schmitter at McNally's is one of my favorite all time sandwiches! It's a cheesesteak taken onestep further. I've been to all 48 continental states, and this is definitely in my top sandwiches. I've never taken anyone to McNally's who didn't love it. Their soups are good too. They have other sandwiches, but I can't get pass the Schmitter. Please don't compare it to the one at Citizen's Bank Park.

Old school Chestnut Hill pub is a must do!

By CrazytravelersfromNC |

Tiny bar/pub/restaurant with limited number of tables -- you must try the Schmidtter sandwich! It's a Philly classic. Classic and a great value...old school gem!

A true Philadelphia classic!

By abs |

McNally's is a great Philadelphia institution. The food is consistently excellent, the service is friendly and attentive and you feel as if you are welcome, whether you are a regular or first time guest. The famous menu item is the Schmitter sandwich but the Dickens is a classic as well. The soups are delicious, as are the home made cakes. Definitely add this to your must visit Philadelphia restaurant list!

The schmitter is the best

By Dale525 |

Yes, the Schmitter is one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Do yourself a favor and go here. Get the schmitter. It really is that good.

A great local experience

By Anthony H |

While in town for business, I searched for a local "tavern" and located McNally's Tavern. When I walked in, it was obvious it's a local "hangout'. I was graciously approached by the waitress asking where I'd like to sit, etc. She suggested one of the local brews and also suggested their famous "Schmitter" for dinner. While I'm not one to normally partake of sandwiches like this, I did and WOW!!! It's no wonder why their famous for this sandwich! Next time I'm in town, I'll definitely stop by McNally's Tavern again!

FUN ATMOSPHERE

By allisonh379 |

Fun place to visit in Chestnut Hill. The staff know many customers by name. Service was great. Looks like you would need a reservation if you would want to eat there. There are only a few table. Food looked good

Nice little pub...

By DamnedLunchbox |

In the Philadelphia area by myself for work and decided to give this place a try for The Schmitter. It was tasty and good, but I don't think it's as great as many others do. Just a warning, the sandwich is messy and you will use your napkins. It is a fairly small pub, and when I went there at 6:45 on a Monday night I believe all the tables were taken. Though the bar was half empty. Give it a try.

Tiny Dive, Big Flavor

By goldenfawna |

My first time in Philly, and I was in search of a cheesesteak. But I didn't want touristy food. Found thus little dive, and man, what a gem! Was warmly greeted immediately upon entering. Nice a cozy atmosphere, servers are super friendly. But the food, sweet lord the food! We ordered their signature sandwich, The Schmitter. Un. Real. Seriously. I killed mine in 4 minutes flat. I Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet, friendly atmosphere and a food coma.

Best Sandwich in the history of Earth.

By Coffeeguy528 |

I won't get into what's in the Schmitter sandwich at McNally's because other people will in their reviews. But I will say this: The Schmitter sandwich is the best sandwich ever made. No further discussion is needed. Don't go to a different restaurant. And when you go to McNally's, don't order a different sandwich. That is all.

Nice pub, great burger

By B P |

Great pub, excellent, delicious burger. Nice place to go for lunch. Close to the arboretum. Friendly service. Good varied menu.

Schmitter is the best!

By EdBareiss |

Great beer, amazing sandwiches - even if you're vegetarian! - and a really warm, neighborhood atmosphere make this an absolute must-see stop if you're in the area. Try the coconut cake, too!

Neighborhood Gem

By Historiana |

I thought you had to go to England to find a real neighborhood pub with good food and pleasant folks. Very enjoyable cheesesteak and a great veggy option with the George Bernard Shaw sandwich. Everyone was pleasant and friendly. Will certainly be seeking this place out again soon!

Everything tasted great!!!

By Shawn P |

We had the Smitter and a Chicken Cheesesteak plus shared some New England Clam chowder and a slice of carrot cake. Everything was home made....and excellent. Great unique take on the Philly Cheesesteak. The Smitter Saue is really good....only downfall is that it is very small inside...don't bring a gang along...great for a date or you and one or two buddies...

Must try The Schmitter

By Jessica S |

This is a neighborhood gem. I haven’t been here in a few years. McNally’s expanded their dining room into what used to be the optometrist next door. My husband had The Schmitter with coleslaw on the side. I had The Tobias with potato salad on the side. Both were finger licking good- literally!! This is one of my favorite places ever since my first visit well over 30 years ago. I’ve always had great meals and service at McNally’s.

GBS!!!!

By Verlye C |

One of my favorite places in Philadelphia. I always get the George Bernard Shaw ($8.35) which includes "3 cheeses: Swiss, American & Provolone, melted on top of green peppers, onions mushrooms & tomatoes. Top with fresh romaine & our special sauce on a kaiser". The service is usually quick.

No Wonder They Been Here 100 Years!

By 713reneey |

A true pub! Homemade, delicious food - fresh and wonderful. Home baked cake to die for! You're one of family at McNally's. Great food, drink and prices! Afterward, have a nice stroll in heavenly, Chestnut Hill.

Small and friendly

By Tantalum |

We came to McNally's to sit and catch up with some friends on a weekend night. The place was packed, with not an empty table or space at the bar. The very friendly staff were able to get us seated, and we enjoyed a solid pub meal. The Schmitter is something, and the soups were good. Noise is an issue in the small room, and conversation could be difficult at times. Again, the very attentive staff moved us away from an overly loud group without our having to ask. I recommend McNally's with the caveat it can be very crowded on weekends. Not surprising for a spot with a lot of authentic character.

A comfy pub with outstanding bar food!

By JohnNJackie |

Just tried this place for the first time a few weekends ago. Having lived in this area I'd heard tons about the schmitter, and that it came from a local place. Desperate for a quick but good meal we gave it a shot and loved it. I had the schmitter which is the real deal, wife had the crab cake sandwich which was also very good. We started with two different types fo soup, and both were outstanding (corn chowder, and meatball primavera). Also finished by sharing a piece of their chocolate cake which was surprisingly good despite it's pedestrian appearance. Fair warning here- this is a tavern with that kind of atmosphere- it's warm and old fashioned. Not tons of seating either so you may have to wait.

You're full of Schmit!

By time2travel13 |

We moved to the area not to long ago and were told we had to try McNally's. Well we finally got around to it and are glad we did. Super cozy place with a great pub/bar feel. Being it is my personal goal to eat my way across Philly I had the have a Schmitter. Great sandwich! If you come to Philadelphia thinking you need to get a cheese steak, you might just be mistaken. The Schmitter will never disappoint.

A stop off the road.

By LoJo466 |

When returning from a camping trip in PA, we decided to give it a try due to the other reviews. They hit the nail on the head. Great little place. One long bar with just a flat grill in the corner of the bar. Well we had to try the Schmitt n it was ok. I do think the menu said sliced beef (which I was looking forward to in the state of PA) but I didn't see tht. More like a flat burger but it was tasty with the combo of toppings. We also tried the Dickens. It's was good but missing the gravy. The service was good. They were very nice and attentive. I also ordered a Bloody Mary n tht was huge n priced right. Over all nice tavern in a old historic town. We needed to fill the void in our bellys n did just tht. But it wasn't overflowing.

Schmitter.

By John Snacks |

It's the mother of all cheesesteak style sandwiches. Big lush and unctuous. The place has a good vibe as well. Go when your hungry be happy. It's about of a ride from the city center but worth it.

Top of the hill

When visiting Chestnut Hill environs, we always stop at McNally's, "home made soups and desserts .- fresh salads and their famoous sandwiches. Try them all GBS ( George Bernard Shaw) roasted vegetables and many cheeses is superb. its a friendly place!

Good steak in a less Philly-steak-characteristic-scene!

By Bradley C |

Stopped in during lunchtime at this small pub and eatery. There are about a dozen bar seats, and we (my fiance and I), were fortunate to grab up two for ourselves. The steaks are on the high-end of prices, but also larger than most sandwiches that you'll get throughout the city - therefore, I'll call it a split on that part. I enjoyed my steak thoroughly, but my girlfriend was less impressed - they overcooked the onions, to the point of blackening them , and it ruined the sandwich for her. I'll note that it was only on her sandwich....so I don't think this a commonplace occurrence. The environment is comfortable and warm, with the dozen seats at the bar I mentioned previously, plus another ten at a counter paralleling the bar, and at least half a dozen tables. It's more a pub than a lunch counter or a diner environment...so this was definitely the most classy of steaks to date, i.e., conventional service with bartender or waitress...and plates, silverware and the like. They take cash and credit cards (MasterCard and Visa only). The next time I'm in, I'll have to try their trademark sandwich, the Shmitter (<?)....

Awesome food cozy bar!

We love this place! Stop in to see Craig the bartender , he keeps your drinks full and is on his game! I love the Scmitter! My wife gets the chicken cheesesteak on a kaiser, and we come here about once a month and get the same thing every time and catch up with Craig!

Attended a recent 50th college reunion and had to make a stop at our old favorite spot for beer, sandwiches and shared memories! Was sooo glad that it was still as we remembered! We were treated royally - their roast beef sandwiches and the famous Schmitter were outstanding! Everything is fresh and made to order. They have monthly soups and specials to keep you coming back. Definitely make this a stop when in this part of Philly!

Neighborhood gem

Love this place. Charming and the food is great. It's bar food, but extra good, especially the roast beef. I didn't have their speciality sandwich and opted for the roast beef club instead. Fantastic. Good beef, bacon, and even the tomato was flavorable. Totally recommend.

A fun place with good atmosphere

By worldtravela69 |

Good beer selection and friendly staff who can handle anything. Service is great and food is decent. The tables allow for a nice mix of families, couples on dates and friends just getting drunk for the night all mixing well

Top Pub in Chestnut Hill

How about fresh beers and proper pour? A great Guinness or a Harp. homemade soups are spectacular, best snapper soup anywhere. Schmitter is a rocking sandwich. Tiny place is a favorite in the area.

A Chestnut Hill legend

By NDomer74 |

Everyone knows McNally’s for the famous Schmitter, but everything on the menu is solid, from the other specialty sandwiches to the burgers to the great desserts to the Guinness on tap. It’s a cozy spot and the staff is charming. If you’re from the area, you may well run into someone you know. A place where everyone knows your name.

Excellent lunch

By brighteyes1314 |

My husband and I had lunch at McNallys and I had the schmitter, excellent sandwich and great sauce. Hubby had the club sandwich and we shared the coconut cake which did NOT disappoint! Service was excellent - very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.

delivered what was on the tin . . .

busy time of year, christmas is. many restaurants get it wrong. mcnallys gets it right. we were greeted with promptness and sincerity and a menu to consider what we wanted so we could order prior to seating. our expectations were managed as were were seated 5 minutes prior to what we were told. food arrived pronto and it was excellent. we were out in a flash and loved the experience. in return, they were able to "churn" more business without making us feel rushed. well managed.

Felt like 'regulars' after first visit.

We were spending a couple weeks housesitting in Chestnut Hill, and looked forward to trying the many cafes and restaurants there. But, after lunch at McNally's Tavern, we found ourselves returning again and again. Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food, especially the soups and crab cakes. Our last day, we decided to split the special as portions are large. Instead of the waitress bringing the order and an extra plate, we were given two nice individual (generous) servings. A refreshingly 'homey' place in an area known more for 'upscale' boutiques and restaurants.

quick beer

By gogreen1 |

stopped in for a quick beer before dinner down the street, cant wait to return to try the schmitter sandwich, which is their landmark item. only negative is the bartender was a little out of sorts because he was busy, I inquired about a beer and without him making a comment he just turned and handed me a beer menu. would not have taken much to answer my request.

Long live the Schmitter!!!!!

By Pete923 |

Your GPS will tell you that you're there but you will look around bewildered. Where is it? It's a small place with a small sign. I went to sample the Scmitter which I heard so much about. What a unique assembly of ingredients albeit sloppy has all heck. I'm a lover of steak sandwiches but this took it to a "whole nutha level".It is up there with my top 5 favorite sandwiches of all time including such greats as the Central Grocery Muffaletta in NOLA. There are about six small tables here and a 30 foot bar. The night I was there the bartender was a guy of very few words. He had the "my dog just died attitude" which was a bit of a downer. I sat at the bar but later talked to a waitress which was friendly. I thought the bathrooms downstairs in the basement were a riot. You have to walk by their washer and dryer and pantry goods to get to them. I could have done my laundry. This place is a must do for your gastronomic bucket list..

Ramshackle, endearing, and delicious

By Blonde_in_HK |

In the family for generations, it's easy to see why this place has survived. You don't go for the ambience, you go for sandwiches the size of your face with all the flavour to match. The schmitter - McNally's answer to the Philly cheese steak - is their speciality. It comes on a kaiser roll with pepperoni, onions, tomatoes and "secret sauce", served with a side of slaw or chips. Not great for a summer's day as there are only windows at the front but even on a weekday there was a steady flow of locals coming for their sandwich fix. The total came to $60 for 5 specialist sandwiches. Would definitely go back.

Chestnut Hill Institution

By HappyMommy41 |

What's not to love about McNally's! It has been around for decades and, truthfully,it used to be that the only people who went were those who knew which door to open. Now it is marked clearly and has a bench outside. The food is good pub food too.

Great Sandwich!!

By JMM |

We came here for the schmitter sandwich and it did not disappoint!! It is a sandwich that everyone should try at some point. One of a kind with incredible flavors. The bar itself is small, dark with a classic feel but perfect for a lunch stop with very friendly service. I will definitely return.

Let down

By @diningonadime1 |

I went here specifically to try the very popular Schmitter sandwich...my expectations were high considering people come from all over to try this sandwich and I also assumed that it was an oversized sandwich packed with meat but what I found was an average tasting, overpriced smaller sandwich that I could've eaten 2 of....Bravo to them for outstanding marketing

Best classic bar with great food

By William F |

The Schmitter is a world class sandwich -- both in taste and size -- contest worthy! Fresh turkey and ham cooked on site every day make for tremendously good sandwiches and main courses. Crab cakes are to die for. House beer is superb; wines mid-range. The turkey chili is worthy of the trip all by itself. We take home a quart at the end of the meal. The atmosphere helps make the experience -- friendly, bustling, sports on TV, lots of conversation from all directions -- a true classic neighborhood bar dating back in the same family for three generations. Not to be missed - and a great watering hole between Chestnut Hill shopping just out the door. Go!

Tobias

By Marlee111 |

Came upon this tavern by accident, but what a find! It is located on a quaint, bustling street with many places to shop. So after eating their great food, you can walk off your meal! They are known for the Schmitter sandwich, an excellent, best I have ever had cheesesteak, topped with grilled salami and their special Schmitter sauce. The Tobias sandwich, which is similar to the Schmitter but has fried pepperoni and salami plus the "special sauce, is my ultimate favorite. Both have onions peppers and cheese, as well. My mouth is watering just thinking of this sandwich. Its a small tavern with a bar and tables, a bit dark and old time, but the staff is friendly and accommodating. There is parking in the back of the tavern, which is not noticeable from the front. It is app. 15 - 20 min scenic drive from Temple University Hospital. I can't wait to go back!! YUM!!

Cozy Tavern

By Jessica S |

McNally’s has been around for 97 years. Once you open the unmarked green door, you enter a cozy tavern. There’s a bar along the right side and about 8 small tables on the left. Our timing was perfect to get a table for 2. We don’t even need to look at the menu because we always get the signature dish The Schmitter. It’s basically a cheesesteak on a round kaiser roll with fried onions, tomato, salami and special sauce served with potato chips. (They don’t have a fryer so no French fries which used to kill my old roommate.) Everything is fresh and hot. There are soup specials and other sandwiches. We split the coconut cake for dessert which was also delicious. There’s street parking and a pay lot nearby. The people are friendly and attentive.

Great Spot

By Ann P |

Stopped here for lunch today to have the famous Schmitter sandwich and yes it was delicious. My husband had the Texas Tommy Dog and wow it was something else. This is not a place for vegetarians but the service was spectacular by Mary Louise and Liz. It's nice to be in a city that has little non pretentious places to enjoy a sandwich and drink. Thanks gals.

Disappointed with food but friendly atmosphere

By Ukienomad |

We ordered the special which was the Cuban sandwich and black bean soup. The sandwich was decent with a side of potato chips but the black bean was totally bland and watery. We added salt and pepper but it didn’t change much. That was very disappointing. The sandwich was decent but I’ve had much better. The coconut cake was just okay but wouldn’t order it again. The staff is very friendly that’s why I hated to give ab average review but I had to be honest. I will not return again as the food was very forgettable. Too many better places to eat. The inside of the restaurant is very small and tables are really close together. It was hard to move around as you were in the other tables faces; and it was very noisy. Not a place to meet a friend that you want to have a conversation with. W if you’re going to sit and use your phone to text. I couldn’t understand why the great reviews.

Smithwicks on tap

The beer is fresh unlike many other on tap local pubs. Food is relatively basic, but good. Soups and carrot cake are awesome.

Keeper

By Herstory_62 |

The two terrific dogs, waiting patiently in the rain outside McNally's Tavern, were a good sign that it was worth a visit & they weren't wrong! This tiny dark, popular/crowded no-frills pub w/ great bar, family owned since 1921, in the heart of Chestnut Hill, is a keeper, featuring good brews, wide-screen tv's & generous helpings of hearty pub food, including my favorite BLT w/ lots of just-cooked-right bacon, big juicy tomatoes & plenty of mayo.

Schmitter sandwich is INCREDIBLE!!

By Jennifer S-Miller |

Came here over the very-hot weekend in July - we arrived right when they opened for lunch at 11am, and we were instantly greeted. This place is very small, very old, but has excellent service and even more excellent food -- yes they truly do. We came here for the schmitter sandwich and it did not disappoint!! If you aren't sitting at the bar, the lunch seating at the tables are very tight and intimate. And for the ladies reading the review, they do have 2 bathrooms, and they are very clean, and downstairs in the basement. Overall, excellent service and excellent food. I can't wait to go back.

This pub is a gem

By Paul D |

I've been going to this wonderful pub for decades, and the best part is it doesn't change. The world famous Schmitter is as good as ever, the beer selection is wonderful, and the ambience ... Well just go and see for yourself.

Great home-style local spot - and home of the Schmitter!

By rikster29 |

Great locals spot for good reasonably priced food and drink. It can be hard to find because there’s no big signs anywhere but it’s at the top of the hill in chestnut hill and definitely worth finding. It’s been there since the 20’s and is famous for the’Schmitter’ sandwich- fried salami and other meats with all kinds of stuff on it - not my thing but my husband loves it! They also have great homemade soups and salads and other sandwiches. Specials are usually good and they always have several types of cake for desert. Very homey. Nothing fancy just good food and service. Definitely recommend- since I stumbled in and found it it’s become a regular spot for us.

A Good Experience!

By Joe R |

In Chestnut Hill to see an exhibit at Woodmere Art Museum, my wife and I had decided that we would eat lunch at McNally's Tavern. We'd checked out the positive reviews on TripAdvisor. My wife ordered a bowl of Wisconsin Cheddar soup, and I chose the tavern's signature sandwich, The Schmitter, kind of a cheesesteak on steroids. Both were hearty and delicious. The atmosphere is typical for a pub or tavern, and the service is friendly and efficient. We look forward to returning to try some of their other interesting menu items.

The food is fresh, prepared to perfection. Friendly service that permeates the operation as only the McNally family can do. Thanks Ann and Meg.

G.B.S.= Vegetarian version of the Schmitter... Hallelujah!

By MeraKi25 |

This place looks like a dark little pub, but OMG the food!! We were here on a food tour, and I don't eat red meat, so no schmitter for me... However, they made me a g.b.s. sandwich (a vegetarian version of the schmitter) and it was probably the best sandwich I've had in a long time. We'll be back for sure.

Home of the Schmitter....what else matters?

By Brian S |

Local, long-standing watering hole in my humble opinion, the best neighborhood in Philadelphia. Anything on the menu will satisfy you, but you HAVE TO go for the famous Schmitter, a Philadelphia-area staple. Not as well known as the basic cheesesteak or Italian pulled pork, but every bit as good. Can get pretty crowded at the height of dinner hour etc, but always a friendly and good-natured crowd.

More than Just a Sandwich

By SHFT54 |

It's a trek and a half to get here to try the famous "Schmitter". But I was glad I made it. I didn't want the generic version of the sandwich they serve at Philadelphia sporting events, I wanted the real deal. The "Schmitter" is a frankenstein of a sandwich cranked out of a tiny kitchen that contains Sliced beef, grilled salami, fried onions, extra cheese, a deliciously decadent sauce fittingly called Schmitter sauce, a tomato(much needed to scale back some of the richness) all on a perfect kaiser roll. The bartender was great, overly enthusiastic on a slow Monday and took extra pride in his job. The bar seems to be very proud, and right fully so, about being one of the first smoke free bars in Philly. The bar itself is something to behold. It's old, the inside carries over the vintage look from the building and cobble stone street outside, and has a small intimate feel. If your a Guinness snob, there's is upper class. Interesting when you go to the bathroom in the basement you pass through their storage unit unguarded(they just trust everybody as far as I can guess).

Holy Moley was this a good lunch. Packed front to back

By Kenneth P |

So I was working near here and figured I had to try this place out. Awesome. Had the Schmitter for lunch and took another sandwich to go for dinner. The Schmitter was the thinnest steak, salami, tomatoes, caramelized onion's on a roll with I guess thousand Islands dressing. Spectacular. Walked in and every seat was taken on a Friday at 1:30 PM. every bar stool except for one two person table. this is a good sign that only got better. It is a bar so Im sure that they have a bunch of beer and drinks. Mid day and working so no drinky drink for me. Loved it. Will go back!

Typical old pub, with apparently famous "Schmitter"

By larrybard |

Undistinguished. Many patrons seem to love their "Schmitter" sandwich. Perhaps it's not fair to criticize anything so clearly subjective, but FWIW the salami component in particular detracted from the taste, and seemed discordant. Last visit had a hot roast beef sandwich on a kaiser roll. Not impressive, even with the side of sauce that they graciously provided on request. And at $10.50 I thought it was overpriced, for what I got. (Chips came with it, the alternative option being coleslaw.) The friendliness and service were excellent, and even though the place was almost empty when we happened to visit I am willing to assume they would be as good if it had been crowded. Maybe it's a place that you have to try at least once -- with a Schmitter -- to judge for yourself.
