Great food

By William P |

Great food. Not that expensive. But they have small tables and not much seating inside. Deserts look good but are a little pricey.

Dream Sandwich

By teachertraveler1961 |

I had a sandwich here that I'm still dreaming about, a baguette with manchego cheese, fig spread, and arugula. If I lived closer, I'd simply return to live out the dream. But I don't, so I can't. Woe is me. The service here was excellent, too. Don't let the casual atmosphere and moderate prices fool you. This was a real value.

Our Go-to Delivery or Eat In Restaurant during our Hyde Park stay

By fl2az |

My family stayed in the area for over two weeks and when we wanted a good meal and couldn't decide, we would get chili, salads, wraps, sandwiches, chicken skewer bowls.

Good sandwiches

By Ramadama |

This is a nice local restaurant to drop in for a sandwich. The hamburgers and the miracle burgers are delicious. It is a popular local restaurant used by the students.

Pizza con i miei primi

By Benjamin S |

I was reluctant to order the garbage pizza because of the name, but once it was on the table it vanished. The crust was thin but yeast and cooked but not crunch. For me, it was the perfect texture. Best pizza I have had in a long time.

Best pizza in Chicago

By julesrules30 |

I'm biased. But, this is my favorite pizza in Chicago. I like their garbage pizza. But, any pizza they make will be great. I've been going there for 30+ years. This place is very busy and eclectic. It's an icon for University of Chicago students, professors, alumni and Pres Obama. I love their salads with the White French dressing. This place is also great for Sunday brunch. The almond croissants are amazing. I also love espresso eggs (fluffed in an espresso machine) and huevos rancheros. This place is very close to the Museum of Science and Industry. So, it's a great place to take visitors to the city.

Unique setting rustic faire

By mitchell7568 |

I loved Medici for it's atmosphere. Wood tables, artwork on the walls, expansive ceiling. The food was above average, very affordable. The service was attentive and friendly. I would definitely go back.

Daughter's Regular Restaurant!

By JayWalk7 |

My husband and I were in town visiting one of our daughters who had a newborn, and this is where she and her husband have eaten before. They suggested it and it was not bad. I had a salad, but it came with a pesto herb dressing and I am just not a pesto person. So I tried about three other dressings trying to make it work, but it never really did for me, but that is not to say that others won't like it. My husband ordered the chicken alfredo with broccoli, and he seemed to like that. They have raspberry and strawberry lemonades, and they are sweet but very tasty. I like the sweeter side, but my husband does not so he just put some of his water in his, and that worked for him. We both enjoyed the chicken soup. He also got a Rootbeer float and liked it. If I had the chance to go again I would and just would order something different. But give them a try.

Amazing food for the young and young at heart.

By kminder |

This Hyde Park restaurant is a "must" if you go to that neighborhood for almost any reason. It is interesting to see the range of Hyde Parkers there--grad student parents with little kids, professors, Lab School teens, and the general mix of students. Garbage Pizza is a classic Medici dish, and will be a memorable experience--as most pizzas are not!

Forget the rest, this is you find the real thing

By bruddle |

It's not hard to be passionate about pizza when I've grown up in Chicago. Medici is a place I'm passionate about. The first time that I enjoyed a pie from this establishment was back in 1970. Back then their "garbage pizza" amazed me with every conceivable topping included - at least what a 10 year old kid could conceive. I returned to the Medici a week ago and the first selection on the menu was my "garbage pizza" - providing instant gratification to my nostalgic being. But the restaurant has changed and grown over the years, and now it truly embodies that cool, little bit hipster, but high quality bakery, deli and pizza shop at the center of Hyde Park life. The smells coming out of this place run pretty close to heaven. Forget the pizza shops downtown that cater their brand of Chicago style pizza to tourists around the world... if you want the real thing - just about everything is made from scratch - this is where you go. Order the pan pizza, really now, this is Chicago and not New York, and load it up! If I was going to recommend one pizza place in all of Chicago for a true pizza love to go - the Medici is it. Friendliness, service and all the other markings of a customer and quality focused restaurant are found here in spades. You will not be disappointed.

Went for dinner. OUTSTANDING Plus.

By StanKIL |

Outstanding Plus dinner great service. The menu offers a variety for any taste. Went with a photo group for dinner. We all gave the place high marks. Atmosphere is lovely also.

Arrabiata sandwich - WOW!

By Zaphod |

I stopped by on my way to catch a bus downtown after visiting the Robie House, a few blocks away. After perusing the whole sandwich menu, I ordered the first item on the list, the Arrabiata. It was nicely loaded with capicola, pepperoni, sopressata salami and provolone cheese, then topped with a balsamic pesto dressing, all on a beautifully baked ciabatta roll. This sandwich was absolutely packed with flavor!

A Magnet

By Andreas W |

The Medici Cafe attracts people of all walks, of all ages, and of many neighbourhoods. Given its central location on UofC's Campus, patrons are a healthy mixture of academics, both teaching and learning, with a solid dash of people from the rest of town who appreciate the carefully curated image of the student hangout, with carvings in the tables and graffiti on the walls. The food comes straight out of the Midwest Cookbook: rich soups, burgers, and dogs alongside solid veggie options, omelettes, French toasts (including one on challa!) muffins, croissants (including ones filled with chocolate AND almonds!) provide options for everybody, and the food is consistently delicious. The place often gets hectic, especially at weekends, when people stream in from all over, but staff never lose their calm, are always friendly, and consistently efficient.

great brunch!

By aslanfifth |

Delicious food, wonderful & interesting atmosphere, quick service (even though it was the Marathon weekend), along with a friendly & knowledgeable server who kindly offered many suggestions to make our meal perfect

Mixed review

By Schmidly6 |

The chips were amazing and my portabella mushroom burger was good but grilled cheese was so greasy and steak was poor quality. If you order carefully could be good or bad

VEGAN DEEP DISH - a dream come true!!!

By Yankoz |

I grew up in Hyde Park and went grade school, high school and college here so I knew Medici at its original site near Blackstone St. and loved it there. I ate at their current site for the first time. As far as I know, it is the only deep dish pizzeria in Chicago that offering vegan cheese and it is delicious!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

Great food and atmosphere

By rebelagent |

The service is always nice and the food is EXCELLENT. It's b.y.o.b. (beer and wine only) so come prepared. I recommend eating upstairs on the deck. It's a great spot for a quick bite to eat with your significant other. The pan pizza is delicious and the burgers are some of the best that I've ever had. The homemade lemonade is a must try. Park is full of excellent restaurants and this establishment holds its own quite well amongst the competition.

Family favorite

By hnsadler |

My husband would come here when he was a student at UChicago. Now that we have 2 children attending UChicago it was time for him to go back. He says the restaurant has changed a lot in 30 years! We ate breakfast here on Sunday morning. I was worried about a wait, but we were seated immediately. Breakfast foods eaten all around. My son said the Cinnamon Roll French Toast was amazing. Pancakes and Challah french toast were good too! Reasonably priced and perfect serving sizes. My son said he was going back later in the day for a Shake date with some friends. This place is a hit!

Good food

By Brion B |

We stumbled into this restaurant while we were visiting the University of Chicago and were pleasantly surprised. It is definitely a local place and the food was very tasty.

GREAT GREAT and GREAT

By alm751 |

Great food, great prices and great service. Consistent throughout the years. Definitely a go-to place when we are in Hyde Park! Nice when we ask for potatoes and bacon to be crisp they actually ARE crisp!!!!

Great coffee, sandwiches, and pastries

By Sheila L |

We visited Medici several times during our trip to Hyde Park recently. This cafe serves delicious pastries, muffins, and sandwiches. We especially enjoyed the arugula, manchego cheese, and fig jam baguette sandwich, although there are many other great sandwiches to choose from. The coffee is excellent, too! The cafe also features several interesting flavors of ice cream, and there is outdoor seating in good weather. For a quick bite, Medici is a great choice!

Breakfast

By RegardsVal |

Pleasant place in the University of Chicago area. There is outside decking, and the traffic wasn't busy, so a good spot to have breakfast. I had a latte and a chocolate croissant. I'm used to the smaller European 'pain au chocolat', so the brick-sized American version came as a surprise. It could have been bit more flaky and chocolate-y, but it was certainly filling. Didn't feel the urge to eat until late afternoon. Good coffee.

Good restaurant on campus

By bcsystems |

Was in town at Univ of Chicago visiting and had lunch here. We came on Sunday 2pm and surprised there was a wait. Apparently the pizza is the most popular food here though I was not hungry and just got a soup and salad. A casual place with good food and service. Menu was pretty diverse in terms of sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, salads, etc.

Decent brunch

By Christopher N |

Came with wife and son. Mexican omelette was tasty. Arrabiatta sandwich was excellent (got it packed for flight). Wife had a bland bagel with lox and I had a bland chicken soup.

Love this place!!

By Ashley W |

My sister and I were at the Museum of Science and Industry and were wanting a pizza place within walking distance. This was a great find! The atmosphere was great, the staff was super nice (our server Marco was amazing!!) and the food was awesome! We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Chicago! Thank you Marco for brightening our day! The world needs more ppl like you! #indygirls

Where else for breakfast and a visit to the park

By Ann W |

This place is a favorite when visiting family at the U of Chicago. The bakery is decadently delicious and the coffee superb. No better place to stop before the swing sets in the park across the street.

A Great Off Campus Eatery

By PhilViking |

For the essence of 57th Street life and feeling of the U of Chicago, this is a must do restaurant. Everyone is there -- young students, grad students, young faculty, ancient faculty, families with young children, elderly, .... Great conversations as expected in Hyde Park. The food is always better than you expect in this small, neighborhood restaurant. The menu contains items from burgers to pizza to creative sandwiches. All are good, you can't go wrong! And even when busy, the service is fast and attentive.

Great lunch with my family

By Coach_Atkinson |

While touring the city we decided to give Medici on 57th a try and ended up having a great lunch with my family. I enjoyed a pizza while my daughter had the pasta (chicken Alfredo). I would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

Great sandwiches

By Adam L |

Definitely the place to go if you go to or visiting U of Chicago. Great sandwiches and you can make your own. Overall good value and filling Would definitely go back in in town

Great food and service off U Chicago.

By Manish Khanna |

Great spot off the U Chicago Campus. Seated quickly. Server was super friendly and helpful. Ordered the fish and chips and a starter before that. The menu is quite extensive and a good choice of different cuisines from sandwiches to pastas and other mains. Ended up going back there a second time so!!!

Love this place!

By Annaline |

They serve here the impossible burger ( for vegans!) Delicious! This place is already iconic for Hyde Park.

Lunch with the family.

By kedkap |

Stopped at this little place for a sandwich with my family. The service was prompt the sandwiches were huge one is big enough for two. All the food was very well done and prepared. If you want to Carry on a conversation it is quite noisy but enjoyable will definitely come back again if I had the chance.

I ordered a Eggs Salmon Benedict

By Thorntone M |

I ordered a Eggs Salmon Benedict and mimosa for breakfast. My waitress was friendly and brought me my mimosa pretty quickly. Though the restaurant was starting to fill up, my order was ready within ten minutes. The fried potatoes that came with the order were made perfectly. The smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce were delicious. The meal filled the entire plate. I could barely finish my meal. The total was only $22.70 for lunch. For what I got, I feel my meal was fairly priced. I will definitely go back and order this meal again.

A Hyde Park standard

By Leslie U |

We used to eat here when my husband was a graduate student in the early 1990s. It's still a warm, comfortable place to enjoy a meal. Great pizza and good entrees.

Great dinner

By Emma R |

We ate here last night. Really efficient friendly service, great burgers. Can recommend the mimosa! Would definitely return.

Tim

By Tim S |

Stopped for lunch with friends. Ate up on the rooftop patio. Food was delicious and Jonathon gave great service! Stop by! You won't be disappointed.

Terrible food! Avoid if you don't want to get sick

By RdmTraveller |

On that last night of our short weekend visit to Chicago with our Son who is attending Chicago U, we decided to order take-out to our hotel from Medici based on reputation and positive reviews. I ordered a Bacon-Bleu Cheese Burger which even had an asterisk beside the menu item warning of eating raw or uncooked meat may cause foodborne illness. When ordering, I specifically ordered a WELL DONE burger!!!!! Through the online app. When the order arrived we all unpacked it and when I cut into the burger I was appalled to see that my burger was virtually RAW!!! This was extremely disappointing! The last meal of our weekend visit was ruined for me by this barely cooked burger!!! You should be ashamed!! We will never be ordering from Medici again on next visit! Avoid at all costs!

Friendly service. Good food

By PMFANDME |

Had dinner here after tour of University of Chicago. Service is so friendly. Food is good. Kids loved the pizza. Fresh made chips and guacamole.

Ummm Ummm Good

By Andrea B |

We came in for a quick bite of dinner. It was awesomeness. We had the delcious lemonade, and then I had the chicken sandwich with there fresh baked bread. The think cut fries were possible the best part of my meal. I like match stick type fries. I highly recommend this for breakfast, brunch and now dinner. One of my new favorite places.

My favorite Hyde Park restaurant.

By Lois J |

In Hyde Park near University of Chicago campus. Two blocks from Mendel Hall. Parking near here is nearly impossible, so park near your concert at Mendel Hall and walk over. Atmosphere is rustic with brick walls. Food is All-American with international flavor. Great burgers, chili, salads, home made bread sides. We tried a daily special: grilled mahi mahi on mashed Yukon potatoes with bacon wrapped asparagus on tomato sauce on top. It was SO GOOD - the best meal I’ve had out in a LONG time. Prices are par with nearby restaurants. This is my “go-to” place when eating before an event at Mandel Hall. It’s popular. No reservations. Depending upon the time of day, the wait could be 15-20 minutes. Don’t miss the Medici Bakery next door. Best French bread, raisin rolls and croissants in town. Good coffee too.

Wonderful Lunch Place in Hyde Park

By Peter B |

My daughter, who is a grad student at U. Chicago, said this was the place to go for lunch. And she was right. Everything that went by looked excellent. The sandwiches we ordered were fresh and excellent. And the side salad could have fed a small army. The chocolate shake was terrific. By the time we left, there was a line snaking out the door. Very popular. Service was friendly.

Fun casual place with a varied menu

By Seetheworld253 |

A University of Chicago and Hyde Park hang out. Great baked goods, pizza, veggie burgers, salads & sandwiches. Food is awesome. Very reasonably priced. A few stools and side walk seating and a restaurant of the same name 2 doors down if you want to sit for a leisurely meal. Highly recommend.

College visit to U of Chicago

By Sandee s |

We live in suburban Chicago and went to University of Chicago for a college visit. Had lunch here after. Delicious food. yummy potato salad and the iced coffee was excellent!

Great food in a great neighborhood!

By karensally2016 |

Popular with locals, this Hyde Park eatery is a gem. My aunt lives in the neighborhood and goes once a week because the food is good and the wait staff are totally open to making it your way with a great attitude! Super casual and BYOB with lots of variety and good vegetarian options. I've had the black bean burger, Portobello sandwich, Southwest salad, Grilled cheese, Margherita pizza (go thin crust and ask for "extra crispy" and veggie chili. All really good and again, you can ask for modifications/substitutions and receive an enthusiastic "sure!" If you're staying nearby, hit the bakery side for a fresh croissant and you will not be disappointed. For perspective, I've gone back every time I visit Chicago and pass through Hyde Park. With good eats, plenty of variety , great wait staff and a casual atmosphere- you just can't go wrong. Plus who doesn't't love extra thin & Fri add of shoe string fries??!!!

Tastes so good!

By BigPinkBang |

We stopped here after visiting the Robie house. The food was excellent! Chips with guacamole and salsa was homemade and so delicious. The entire table loved enjoyed themselves. I had the Ensalata Kimba which I wouldn't normally order but it was so good on such a hot day. Everyone at my table was happy with their meal.

Great for comfort food or a quick take-away

By Audareiss |

My friends and I needed some sandwiches to keep going on our visit in Hyde Park. We all grabbed different sandwiches, bagels or wraps, and they were all excellent. Drinks looked good too. I'm looking forward going back to try some of their pizzas.

Average Food, Poor Service

By Rich D |

I took a group I work with there for lunch. I never got the drink I ordered, I had to ask for additional water and it took 10 minutes to get the servers attention to get the check. Sadly they already included tip. I would not have been as generous. She wasn't 18% attentive. The food was average. the French onion soup did not have the cheese melted over the top and in a city known for great pizza theirs was at best average. I did hear the wraps were good and the Reuben sandwich was good.

Great Break!

By travlingirl61 |

We were walking from the Museum of Science and Industry to U of C on a very cold day when we just wanted a seat and something warm to drink. We happened to fall into this great little bakery with organic coffee and some of the best baked goods around. I would definitely stop here again!

A Chicago Classic

By mjygi |

Great food by the university. Eclectic menu and crowd. Next to one of the worlds best bookstores and a fun little park. A gem.

Great food; great atmosphere

By jeffreyhunt |

Went for lunch with my daughter. Great bohemian atmosphere and the food is well prepared and tasty. Also got to squeeze my own orange juice.

Doesn’t Hide in Hyde Park

By lakefront_breeze |

Metered parking is on street in restaurant front. Free on street parking is available on nearby side streets. Service is excellent and friendly. Burgers and pizza are convenient fare. Menu has some interesting specialties.

Great Neighborhood Deli

By Scenic70291 |

This is a neighborhood favorite just down from UC campus. Once you have been, you will want to return. It provides a great selection of fresh, home-made soups, salads & sandwiches. For lunch, get there before 12:15 or you will have to wait; it really jams up now that the weather is breaking . Highly recommended!

Still wonderful

By Milo_Gavin |

It has been many years since I last ate at the Medici. I didn't even know they had moved! Nevertheless, the new location was familiar in terms of layout, menu, and fantastic pizza. Would like to have seen a heavier hand with salad ingrediants - lots of lettuce, but not much blue cheese, pecans, or nuts in the salad. Friendly service and interesting menu. Enjoyed my croissant and coffee from the bakery next door the following day.

amazing

By Maclean318 |

I loved Medici on 57th. Great food nice place and good service. You better go and visit it too...!!!

Great lunch, breakfast and coffee

By BeantownBilly |

Located a couple of blocks from University of Chicago, Medici offers tasty lunch fare with hand made sandwiches with excellent and fresh ingredients. They also a full array of excellent coffee drinks. Some tables available to sit outside on a nice fall day.

Interesting decour.

By Raymond W |

The restaurant has a quirky feel to it. The bare bricks have been signed by customers and there is a rotating statue. The food is good and the portions are great. The service was polite and efficient. The prices are cheap as well a good place to stop by if you are in the neighbourhood.

Enjoyed the pizza and beer

By Patrick A |

We had a good time. The beer choices were good. The personal pizzas were very filling. Good service overall.

Great lunch stop

By Libra_K1960 |

We had a lovely lunch at Medici before visiting the nearby Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Robie House. Very friendly and welcoming, and it was great to see people of many generations eating in a venue that in the UK would probably not be frequented by the elderly. Our salads were good, and we then bought take-out sandwiches to eat later, which were also tasty, on good bread.

Great food, great service, fun place to visit

By RonL40 |

Menu offers a lot of variety, with pizzas both thin crust and deep dish, in personal sizes to large. Burgers, sandwiches, Italian, salad, veggies. Something for everyone's taste. The chips with guacamole was superb. Everything we ordered was quickly delivered and delicious. Easy to recommend this old U of Chicago standard. Still serving great food!

A server who loathes minority with language barriers

By liubinbin2018 |

I went there for the first time yesterday with my girlfriend and her mom. We had a bad experience with our server-Ms. Yuwared. We ordered a Mediterranean pizza. She asked us what kind of pizza crust do we want, thin or pan? Because we didn’t know what pan crust is or looks like, I asked her if pan crust is just another name for regular crust. She said she doesn't know about the regular crust. Pan crust is 2 inches thick. Thin crust is 1cm thick. Which one do you want? My girlfriend thought Pan crust was deep dish pizza, so she told Ms. Yuwared that we'd like to have thin crust. Ms. Yuwared was about to write it down. I said: “Wait, I don't think Pan crust pizza is deep dish pizza.” Ms. Yuwared appeared to be very annoyed. I was quite surprised because the whole process only took less than one minute. Ms. Yuwared said to us: "I don't know about regular crust. I don't know about deep dish. Pan is 2 inches thick. Thin is this thick. Which one do you want?" I thought every Chicagoan knows deep dish pizza, especially someone who works at a pizza restaurant. Anyway, we chose pan crust. 15 minutes later, we asked Ms. Yuwared to refill the teapot. She asked us to pass the teapot to her. The teapot was served on a small plate. So my girlfriend's mom tried to pass the small plate and the teapot together to Ms. Yuwared. Ms Yuwared said “just the pot, just the pot!” very fast twice. My girlfriend's mom doesn't speak much English and she's just here visiting her daughter briefly, so she didn't understand. Then Ms Yuwared just leaned over and abruptly grabbed the teapot. While she was turning around and walking away, she made the sound "ugh..." as if she was disgusted by my girlfriend's mom. I can't believe Medici hires people like this. She treats minority people who has language barriers as if they don't deserve her service. Ironically Ms. Yuwared is Asian herself. We are the only group of Asian customers in the restaurant during that time, and we saw Ms. Yuwared was very friendly to Caucasian customers.

Very nice dinner ahead of a comedy show...

By Raymo A |

We had five pasta dishes here that all revolved around seafood...calamari, salmon and frutti d' mare...plus one side salad. All were very good and portions were just right. Prices are in line with what I would expect. Service was good, maybe a little too detached. Full bar (limited whiskey) and extensive wine list. Desserts looked good, but no time to have them. Inside was laid out nicely and was fortunately on the quiet side...a relief from our noisey Tavern visit downtown. It was a snowy night and I dropped everyone off at the door. Since we are out-of-towners, I was fortunate to drive by an adjacent parking garage (across the street from the restaurant) that had the restaurant's name on the sign...or I would have not found a spot nearby.

Interesting spot for lunch near University of Chicago

By filmguy1 |

We asked a number of students for places to grab lunch and a number of them suggested this restaurant. We did try the pizza but we were not fans since I think we will stick to thin crust pizza. My daughter is Vegan and she had a great vegetable soup and entree. Overall the food was tasty but a little on the heavy side. Portions were excellent. We really enjoyed the decor with the wood tables with etchings in them. Our service was top-notched—I forgot his name but he was super friendly and had a pony tail. He was also very considerate when we told him our diet needs.

Great place for comfort food

By BuffaloJoe |

We visited for lunch while touring the University of Chicago campus on a Saturday afternoon and had a wonderful meal. The menu has a variety of options from burgers to Chicago style pizza. The staff was outgoing and friendly and the food was deliciously prepared and well seasoned. Although this is a new location, the dining area is limited but we did not have to wait for a table.

Huge menu lovely place!

By TravelingCouple0913 |

Walked here after going to the Museum of Science and Industry for lunch, it was a cold but sunshine filled day. Lovely area around the block from Chicago University which is gorgeous campus so the area around the restaurant was just as nice. We had a great lunch with so much to choose from I had a hard time deciding what to get. I regret getting what I did which was good tuna sandwich, but I think I would have been more impressed with another choice. What shined about this lunch too was our waiter Jorge. He was pleasant and funny and so attentive. Highly recommend if your in the area.

Mexican hot chocolate for the win

By RTPR2015 |

Tasty lunch spot after tour at U Chicago. Fries are crispy, fettuccine was spectacular. Mexican hot chocolate is not to be missed!!

Generous breakfast, fast service, fair prices

By no_place_unlike_home |

My daughter and I had breakfast here shortly after it opened so we were the only customers. By the time we left, it was starting to fill up. We each had an egg breakfast with various accompaniments. Coffee was good and strong. Service was fast and pleasant. The decor is quirky as befits a location adjacent to a major university. On the way out, stop by the attached bakery and pick something up for later in the day. The apple filled croissant is yummy!

Saved by the Busboy....

By HarryBGurnee_IL |

Visited during Reunion Weekend at U of C; art fair in full swing along the street outside. Was seated promptly (and solo), but was quickly off-put by the rude indifference of my waitress. Perhaps if I'd been a large party with higher tip prospect, but not today! Ordered a medium goat cheese/spinach pan pizza, which was fine, but not spectacular in itself. Things slid off the cliff when I requested the traditional shakers of parm cheese & flaked red pepper and was told there was a scarcity of them, but she could bring me "little packets" of cheese instead. Really?? Noting a busboy who'd been diligently keeping my water glass full, I made a few hand gestures across the room, and PROMPTLY was delivered shakers of both items. It only got better; when I confronted my waitress later about the "scarce" items, she claimed, "oh, I'd asked him to bring those over to you" - Really?? I called her on that one, since my food was delivered and by then consumed. Welcome to slackers.....

Coffee with nondairy options

By K Pastore |

This is a cute neighborhood cafe that seems to do a good amount of business. I picked up coffee and they had almond milk and coconut milk for dairy free options. They offer gluten free bread for sandwiches and a gluten free crust for pizza. Lots of pastries for those who love their carbs. Fruit cups and yogurt also available.

Great Casual dining venue.

By Mary F |

The Medici is a friendly gathering place for University of Chicago Students, faculty and neighborhood residents. The food service is good, the atmosphere tend to be such you can converse with friends and others with ease. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. The medici is highly recommended for casual enjoyable dining, a warm and friendly environment.

Popular neighborhood spot for the college

By Bill R |

My daughter and I were visiting a professor at the U of Chicago. He brought us to lunch with his research team at this local neighborhood cafe, located just off the main campus. The place is apparently very popular with the college and the neighborhood , the young and the not so young alike. The decor was eclectic (including gargoyles) and it's one of those places where people write on the walls. Everyone went with either burgers, sandwiches, salads or quesadillas. We all seemed to enjoy the meal. Service was good and the prices were reasonable.

good food good value wonderful atmosphere super nice staff

By ADog56 |

we came here for brunch. My wife misplaced her laptop..It showed up elsewhere however the staff was incredible in their help. TThe staff: form the front end ,managing a sunday brunch crowd to the wait staff which was super busy, they shined. The food was just as good with the only disappointment being the "garbage ice cream sundae"...I would be back here in a heartbeat

Its Average

By Ann S |

It was ok. Service was great but the food is nothing special. We got burgers and despite condiments and garnishes, they were bland. It was the oddest thing.

Neighborhood Cafe/Restaurant

By interceptpubs |

Ate here by accident really. Happened to find a parking space in front of the place (parking in this area is horrible when U of Chicago is in session) to run some errands several blocks away. When we got back, there was still time on the meter and, well, we were right outside, so decided to go in for lunch. Took a little while to get a table with the lunch rush and service was in general a little slow, but the food was fairly good - had a turkey/brie sandwich on cranberry bread (menu said toasted, but sadly it wasn't as it would really have helped) with some good shoestring fries and hot apple cider to drink. My partner had the grilled chicken kabob with rice which looked great and tasted pretty good. Prices were a little high but not outrageous. Overall, if you're in the neighborhood (better yet parked right in front), this is a reasonably good choice.

Good Sandwiches

By Maria O |

Good sandwiches. Particularly liked the BLAT (bacon lettuce avocado tomato). Good drink selection. Limited ice cream selection. Nice that there is some outdoor seating for nice weather.

Great Breskfast

By Kilgore_Trout_88 |

Had breakfast at Medici after Chicago Half Marathon. Even though place was packed we didn't have to wait very long. Fun bustling atmosphere. Our server was friendly and attentive. Food was great and arrived quickly. Definitely would come back for another visit.

Fantastic and casual dining experience

By dustythoughts |

This place is so great on many levels: I used to love taking family here when I was a student at UC, it was also a good place to go with friends, and the overall ambiance was simultaneously very welcoming and casual while still offering first-rate food. I love the baked goat cheese, the grilled veggie chili (it has eggplant in it!), the fresh mozzarella sandwich, and the pesto chicken pasta. Although to be honest, anything you order off the menu will be good. Service is great, and they're taking good efforts to be safe during the pandemic, with tables spaced apart and everyone wearing masks.

Lunch

By Navigate744460 |

Arrived just before the lunch crowd. Fast service. Ordered the chicken salad sandwich - croissant was a little overwhelming.

Hyde Park College eatery--nice atmosphere--good solid food.

By nancy w |

Typical local college restaurant. When the second floor outdoor seating is available, consider the wait for a table. Good standard food--I had a hamburger and fries and it was decent. I've been here for breakfast in the past and breakfast is really good. This is a good "go-to" place in Hyde Park. I've never been disappointed. My hamburger and fries bill was less than $15.00.

Hyde Park's best pub

A visit to Hyde Park neighborhood (such as the University of Chicago) can be celebrated with lunch (or dinner) at Medici. The onion rings - a great appetizer (crisp, and moist on the inside). The BLAT (BLT with avocado) was excellent; the steak sandwich was pretty good. Enticing array of sandwiches. You are sure to find something you like. A student hang-out with a pub ambiance.

Great coffee and atmosphere!

By Trenton C |

First things first: When you go, request Irma as your server... she will treat you well, suggest her favorite things, and you will leave feeling like you've just made a new friend. The dinner and lunch menu here is very diverse and I have been stopping at Medici since I started visiting U of C a few years ago. Now, I look forward to spending many nights here as a student at U of C.... Not only is the food good, but the coffee and teas are one of a kind. I would recommend the Almond Tea if you want to taste something that always reminds me of Christmas. BUT, I would also recommend the macchiato with caramel and Mexican chocolate (aka with cinnamon).

One Cool Place with Excellent Food

By Beth B |

Our host, Alan, was so welcoming - and this was our first visit to Medici thanks to favorable reviews I had seen online before heading out to the University of Chicago area with my family. He made us feel like his family, and we loved that. Our server was Yvette, and even though she was super busy, she was very efficient, and we loved all of our food items. From delicious chicken fingers with thin fries to a yummy Ensalada Kimba to my Cranberry Turkey Sandwich with Brie and my husband loved his Corned Beef Hast. All in all one of the BEST Chicago dining experiences just because it was casual but fun and delicious.

Nice cafe and bakery near U. of Chicago

By TarHeel |

We took the train from downtown to this area mainly to see Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House. We had some time to kill and popped in for coffee and pastries. Very friendly vibe and clientele seemed to be a mix of different ages and types. We sat outside and watched the birds go after crumbs that feel from the tables. They also had a big water dispenser so we filled up our water bottle. We've seen these types of neighborhood cafes near a lot of colleges, and we actually prefer independent establishments to chains. Definitely recommend it if you are nearby.

My favorite.

By solo-reader-wanderer |

I literally have Medici in my favorites on my phone, alongside my parents, my boyfriend, and my best friend. Their goat cheese and spinach pizza is beyond good. Their food is superb—I always get the pizza, but have heard rave reviews for their other items as well, particularly their sandwiches and wraps. When I go to the café, I often pick up some superbly baked bread and coffee. They're famous for their milkshakes, and newly offer drink options. The decor is unique, gargoyle-themed, and they still have their graffiti-ed walls and tables of old that you can feel free to add to. During summers, their porch is the place to be. I've been to the Med dozens of times and it's a neighborhood mainstay that my uncle told me about visiting back in his time as well. I never get tired of the Med in any form. I should also mention that it has gluten-free options that my gluten-free friends used to swear by.

Nice casual place

By Grace A |

Had to visit U of C hopsital so wanted to try this place out. It has a very cool and casual vibe and lots of choices. Very reasonable prices too. As we were not hungry, we split some Soup, Chili & Tuna melt - hit the spot... no complaints. Just that it was super chilly inside there and people had their coats on, like us. What is it with dining establishments that freeze their customers? Been to too many like that.

Upscale Casual Food and Drink

By lwsara |

Very comfortable casual spot with indoor and outdoor dining in the UChicago area of Hyde Park. Lots of variety - sandwiches to pizza, salads and burgers at reasonable prices. The bakery next door is superb and if you order items with bread - they are scrumptious! This is a short way from the hustle and bustle of the crowed areas of Hyde Park so parking on street is not a problem. They serve a fabulous weekend brunch (or so we are told).

Go with History

By Craig W |

Medici does everything well, and it has since it converted from an art gallery to the "go to" comfort/organic food restaurant near the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.

Impressive lunch!

By Batholemew |

We came alittle bit before lunch started so we decided to start with a fresh apple croissant and a few coffes. Lets just say I thought the croissant was fresh and excellent and recommend the Mexican hit chocolate. We orders lunch and had great suggestions from our server. The pizza and sandwiches were terrific. All fresh and full of flavor. The margarita pizza was so tasty. Glad we had left overs to take home. We were impressed with the ambiance for a small neighborhood cafe. Prices were very fair. Worth a stop!

Awesome burgers

By bccrab |

This place near the university of Chicago campus is a great lunch spot. The burgers are awesome but they have a fairly extensive menu. I chose a burger and loved it . Nice service and a pretty cool atmosphere as well.

Unique restaurant

By Betsy N |

We walked in and were greeted by the Host. She led us upstairs past a good amount of graffiti on walls, furniture and everywhere. Due to the Covid rules that were in affect, many of the tables were stacked with chairs. Our table was in the very front of the restaurant, but we were unable to really get any kind of view of the street below. The menu had some unique selections. I ordered a stew which was unusual, but flavorful. I am not sure I would order it again, but I wasn't disappointed that I ordered it. The service was fast. They had some unique craft beers on the menu. The prices were reasonable. I'm glad we stopped after our tour of the Robie House.

FANTASTIC FOOD and neat setting

By S2S2555 |

Loved this place so much we went there for breakfast and then returned for lunch! The food is delicious and well-priced and the decor is great, too.

Very historic place

By Yulun W |

Two PhD students took me there while I was visiting the university. Very close to campus, so great for a breakfast to start the day. We all had smoked salmon (lox?) dishes, which were nice and huge. This place is quite nice in terms of decoration. It's interesting that tables were all covered with marks.

Terrible customer service

By Curiosity75142 |

Spent $300 . They got the order completely wrong and blamed me for it. Would not accommodate or apologize. Two other people heard the order and knew I was right manager was awful

Great

By RoTripper597 |

Really enjoy this place. Very good food and their bakery options and breads are delicious. Service super friendly and everything seems fresh. Parking can sometimes be difficult.

Great menu & fun atmosphere

By Barb F |

My first visit but it won't be my last. Delicious food and solid menu with lots of options. Their bakery next door smelled delicious - might have to pick up some treats next time!

enjoyed the almond pastry and deli sandwich

By Paul P |

we went to this place on my daughter-in laws reccommmendation. first time was for coffee I& pastry - very tasty. Second visit for lunch - good deli sandwich - I had the Italian sub & wife had fresh mozzerella sub. both were generous in the fillings & served on ciabatta rolls. Order at the counter w/ quick delivery even during the lunch rush. We were in and out in about 30 minutes.

Delightful Lunch Spot!

By CountryDude3 |

Stopped in on a very cold afternoon (1st snow of the season) after our tour of U of Chicago...something for everyone here! Not only did they offer hot soups and sandwiches, salads and burgers, they also had a large selection on their children’s menu. We recommend the chips and guacamole (chips served steaming hot) and the garbage burger. Staff was very pleasant and efficient.

First Visit!

By AJP57 |

A friend recommended that we have breakfast here. It was great and was worth the trip from downtown on the Magnificent Mile. The breakfast was great! I had blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. When I left, I checked out their bakery next door and everything look scrumptious but I didn't yield to temptation since I was having dinner at a steakhouse. Next time, I'll give in!

Neighborhood Gem for Sure

By MrsDennsity |

Great wide ranging menu. Good ingredients. Deep crust pizza superb. Kids menu with good options. Fresh salads with nice selection. We have high expectations when visiting Chicago and we're not disappointed.

Popular lunch spot near UChi campus

By iowa_mom_ks |

We enjoyed delicious pizza here for lunch after touring University of Chicago. Prompt and pleasant service in addition to the good food. Easy bus ride back to downtown from here.

Great little place

By Kevin5603 |

In town visiting UChicago with daughter and wife. Saw this place on tripadvisor and stopped in. The wait was only 10 minutes for late lunch. The server was excellent. The decor was nice and rustic. I had the Angus burger. Excellent. Came with fries. Daughter had chicken breast sandwich and fries. Wife had roast beef on rye. Portions were generous. Total with three pops was $33. Not bad for Chicago. They had several sandwiches, pizza including individual and entrees

Milkshakes... worth the calories

By Kathy C |

Referred here by a U of Chicago student after a college tour, specifically for the milkshakes. They did not disappoint. Cinnamon and chocolate, Mexicana? Very, very good. Service was very good , despite it being a bit busy. The rest of the food was decent , fresh salads, good flavor. If you are visiting the University, its worth a stop.

Medici is a long time Hyde Park staple

By Global_Photographer |

Love their cheese burgers! Good pizzas. Large, tasty salads. Service can be a bit hit or miss depending on how busy they are, but the staff are friendly. It's a great lunch place when at the University of Chicago or the Museum of Science and Industry. It's definitely child friendly. They have outdoor seating in the summer.

A great brunch on a busy Sunday

By daymiller |

The great folks at Medici cheerfully accommodated our large group on a Sunday following a special church event. Our table ordered a whole variety of items and they all looked great. I had the cinnamon roll french toast and it was literally *the best* french toast I have ever eaten. In my life. Loved the relaxed vibe.

What a Gem!

By CB |

We were at the science museum and got hungry. Thankfully, this place was a short walk. We ordered chips and guac (holy cow, so good!), hubby got a burger, and I ordered a BLTA. The food was extremely tasty and presented well. We also ordered two milkshakes and found them to round out the meal perfectly. We were seated immediately (it was close to 2pm) and service was prompt. If you’re in the area, we highly recommend this spot!

Outstanding yet informal dining experience

By Albertine13 |

This hidden gem is the best restaurant in Hyde Park if you are seeking good food, great service, casual atmosphere and reasonable prices. We have been to Medici several times and never fail to be favorably impressed. Student atmosphere due to its proximity to the University of Chicago. Nearby is the independently owned 57th Street Bookstore, one of the finest bookstores in Chicago.

Will never again

By arthur d |

Okay so i had been eating at Medici for a few weeks amd always ordered the pan pizza cheese and sausages, well this day went ordered my usual with a Pepsi. By 5 oaky i was done, food poisoning like i have never had before in my life. Promised myself i would never return amd have not..

Just Fantastic

By Graham N |

We were in Hyde Park for a college visit, and my daughter wanted to see what the area was like. We went to Medici for lunch on Saturday, and waited 20 minutes at 2:00 p.m. it was well worth it. This is a typical college town restaurant, with burgers, sandwiches, etc. the food was anything but typical-it was fantastic. I’ve never had chips, guacamole, and salsa that were this good. I had kebobs, and they were just fantastic. The rest of my family had various different burgers, and they all looked fantastic. They all said they were. The service was perfect and charming. I was in Chicago for four days, and ate at lots of great restaurants of all kinds all over town. In my mind, this was unquestionably the best meal experience I had in Chicago.

Excellent Breakfast

By wxman291 |

Had my first Smoked Salmon omelet. Wonderful but a little heavy on the onions. Service was great. Loved the homemade wheat bread.

Great for Sunday Brunch

By Helene S |

Nice place for Saturday brunch near the Museum of Science and Industry and U Chicago. Choose either from the walk up bakery or the sit down restaurant next door. Brunch options that we tried included the smoked salmon omelet, breakfast burrito and the huevos rancheros. Service was great. Walked to the bakery next door and it looked great as well.

Good Enough Experience - Great Bakery Though

By Donald W |

Medici, the restaurant, is convenient for faculty and students at the University of Chicago, but it offers only an acceptable dining experience. The dining room was a welcome ruralesque departure from the Chicago suburban landscape, and the food was good...prepared well enough and presented well enough. It was a bit irritating that our party's (9 people) dishes were delivered at very different times. The service was attentive enough but not friendly or willingly helpful. Medici, the bakery, on the other hand was a delight. The service was friendly albeit not willingly helpful, but the pastries and coffee were wonderful, especially the plentifully filled petits pains au chocolat. We'll return to the bakery, probably not to the restaurant.

Food is good

By Jen H |

Although display pictures are not to my like, the food is good. Other than some single items, we also ordered the family size pizza. It is not the same as other deep dip pizza. The "crust", in my opinion is actual bread dough and not the "normal" pizza crust. This actually give it a surprise and great eat.

Don't overlook their shakes

By AABerry |

This is a really nice family / community restaurant. I've only had their delicious shakes and GF grilled cheese, but my daughter and her friends eat here all the time. Staff is very friendly. I accidentally left my credit card and they held on to it and then shredded it for me.

Great food!

By Kari Jo F |

In town for an interview and enjoyed a delicious pan pizza and soda float. Service was great and the food was affordable.

Special place

By טל ד |

We hada family lunch there and enjoyed this restaurant from the first step: special decoration (part of it hand writen by the visitors - a lot of fun to read and write something of our own on the walls, tables and benches), good food and friendly service.

We Love Medici's

By Melissa G |

My family and I were watching the news many years ago and saw Medici's being featured on that Friday's Hungry Hound segment. We decided to check it out that weekend and we've been coming back ever since. Medici's is all of our favorite restaurant because they have the best food, the best atmosphere, and the best people. My favorite is the pan pizza, my mom loves the turkey cranberry sandwich, and my dad likes the quesadillas. The graffiti on the walls gives it a "lived in" feeling, the servers are always on top of their game, the rotating statue is a source of entertainment if the conversation goes dry, and did I mention the food is classic but unique and overall just always delicious? I've brought many other friends & family members here over the years and it's always an instant hit, they have a little something for everyone. Every visit has to be concluded with a trip to the bakery for some banana pudding/turkey croissant/milkshake/cranberry turkey sandwich to go (for lunch the next day, obviously) and a swing by 57th street books at the end of the block. Medici's is our absolute favorite restaurant and I don't think that will ever change.

Hyde Park Hydeaway

By FoodFight101 |

Medici began as a counterculture (beatnik/hippie) haven in 1962. The funky style of this innovative youth-oriented eatery, unique back then, has been widely emulated elsewhere. The BYOB restaurant has long since morphed into a casual neighborhood hangout immensely popular with U of C students and faculty. It moved its fabled decor, graffiti and all, to the current location in 1998. There is a bakery/deli next door and al fresco dining along the sidewalk and on an upstairs patio.. Oh, Med is definitely worth a visit, but compared to other popular neighborhood joints I frequent, I consider it "average." You can't go wrong with their burgers and pizzas. But the food and service tend to be slipshod, especially at busier times. Some servers are friendly while others vary from inattentive to indifferent. On a recent visit, the fries tasted like corn tortillas. Well, yeah, because they both shared the same deep fryer. One of our entrees arrived cold and the kitchen failed to heed a special request. The other entree, BBQ chicken, was fairly good fried chicken drenched in a sea of so-so bottled BBQ sauce (ask 'em to hold the sauce or serve it on the side).

So good, we went twice in two days!

By Anne V |

Good menu with plenty of choices. Food was fresh, and well presented and served by friendly staff. Coffee was excellent. The fresh fruit plate was a delightful assortment of fruits not often seen in restaurant fruit option...contained apple, orange, pineapple, fresh blueberries and more. First day: Sweet potato pancakes. Second day: Scrambled eggs with rye bread.

Tasty pizza ane veggie chili

By aagarwal |

After a visit to MSI Chicago, we came here for a late lunch. We enjoyed their thin-crust pizza (although, be aware it may not be as thin as other venues, but compared to their pan pizza, it is thinner) and vegetarian chili soup. I wish the chili had more beans with respect to the liquid ratio, since as a vegetarian, I'm always looking for ways to increase my protein intake. They might try mashing some of the beans to thicken up the soup. The staff was courteous, although at times, it appeared there was a gap in communication amongst them if we requested something. But this was minor! I would gladly go back!

Obligatory college campus pizza-and-burger place--and now with wine, beer and spirits--what?! on 57th Street?!

By gayhayward |

This restaurant next door to the University of Chicago has long been a fixture in Hyde Park, but booze was outlawed on 57th Street since the 60s. They recently installed a few beer taps, a short, but decent, wine list and some great cocktails (definitely try the delicious Bloody Mary's) --a very comfortable replacement for their BYOB corkage fee. No change from great pizza--pan and thin-crust--wonderful burgers and onion rings and a full dinner menu, as well as good deli offerings. Substantial weekend brunches are a very popular neighborhood event. "The Med" was an Obama family favorite, when they lived here full-time. Don't miss it!

Chicago Vacation

By Sandy S |

Everything was excellent. Kind of a college hang-out, but all ages of people there. Don’t be put off if there is a line at the door, we went there at 1130 on a Sunday, there was a party of 14 waiting. Our party of 4 got in in 20 minutes. Food and service was great.

Nice find for breakfast!

By Judy080360 |

My husband had wanted to take me here for dinner but we arrived too late in the evening after a long drive, so we opted for breakfast instead! So glad we didn't miss it. I loved the ambiance and the neighborhood. Our server was friendly and we started with coffee and had a smoked salmon breakfast bagel. Was very fresh/tasty. Will definitely go back to check out the dinner menu.

It is no surprise why this place is busy

By Franco on the River |

This is a casual place that has something for everyone. We were there for U of C graduation weekend and son brought us here. He said that this had become his favorite place to eat in Hyde Park area over last four years and he is one picky eater. Items were priced reasonably and portion sizes were plenty. It was a very busy evening when we were there but service was still excellent. I like the BYOB but wished I had stopped to pick up something before going. I would definitely recommend this for families and others. It is a little loud and crowded but it was still very nice.

Not good at all anymore

By Lucy B |

This used to be a great restaurant. The past 6 or 7 times I've gone, always wanting to give it a chance, the food has been somewhere between bad and inedible. Undercooked dough, pizza with tons of sweet sauce and very little cheese, sloppily slapped together burgers, way overcooked, greasy eggs, a cake with clearly curdled cream in it. Really disgusting.

Terrible treatment by manager

By MMP121882 |

I am so angered by the treatment we received from the manager at Medici on 57th. We had a family group of 10 people. We called ahead and they said they couldn’t take a reservation but there should be no problem seating our group. We arrived a short time later. They informed us that the table that would accommodate us was currently in use but it would be open in only 20 minutes or so. We waited patiently. All that time, there were three empty tables that could be pushed together to accommodate our group. After 30 minutes, the other group had made no progress in leaving. We asked if they could push the 3 tables together and the manager refused. We told her she had been patient and waited but now needed to be seated. She said we didn’t understand that if she pushed the tables together it would change the whole make-up. She then turned and walked away mid-discussion. In the 45 minutes we were waiting and talking with the manager, those three tables sat empty. They could have seated us and served us in that time.

decent, inexpensive

By canuckfan491 |

In a pleasant surrounding of locals and students; good spinach pizza, excellent coffee and attentive service

Stop for a brunch

By Panagiotis V |

Walking towards the University we stopped on 57th to get something to eat. This place well known to the area but mainly to all students in the campus, offers snacks, sandwiches, pies , refreshments and baked things such as croissants slices of pizza etc. With a few tables inside and also outside, if the weather permits , is very popular in the academic society of the university. What we ate was crispy and tasty, and prices were fair.

Great Place

By scenicsam |

We happened upon this place while exploring the Hyde Park, Jackson Park area. Other than the rude greeter, we couldn’t have been happier with our experience. I ordered the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict and crispy potatoes which were awesome, and splurged and ordered the Pumpkin Shake because it sounded so good - and was! Pieces of pumpkin pie in the shake. Service was excellent even though it was busy. More food than I could possibly eat, would go back here in a flash, highly recommend.

GREAT service and EXCELLENT food!

By Naomi T |

We were visiting the University of Chicago and needed a good place to get some lunch. I was with my three children of varying ages, and I was VERY impressed with our server. All of the children loved their food, as did I. My son and I both ordered the half-pound beef dog - a great choice. The interior is very comfortable and welcoming (and we were entertained watching the statue that rotated periodically). It was a very good value, especially considering the prime location. It was a little tricky to find the door, because there is a deli-type entrance, but I think it's actually the same business.

Very popular with the University group but left much to be desired

By Neil M |

We all thought that the scallops and fetticine sounded like a good dinner option but all found it lacking in flavor. Even adding parmesan cheese did not help much. No wine or beer served but BYOB is allowed. A university thing. Very disappointing after a long day of sight seeing!

Trendy and Good

By Sadie D |

We came on a Friday night. We were seated right away but our waiter was super slow. It took forever for him to come over and greet us. Plus we had to get up everytime we needed something. We never refilled our water. We finally ordered all at once so he didn't have the chance to run off to the front to talk...got spinach lasagna and a salad. The food was good. The service was slow and the atmosphere was pretty cool. I will be back. BYOB.

Classic American dishes

By Ariel N |

Medici is a Hyde Park standard. Good food done very well. This is local hang out for college students but still has a welcome home family and friends feel. Mostly everything is made fresh. I find the severs know there menu and point you in a good direction.

Perfect in its class

By Michael I |

Hangout place with hangout food. Fond of this place and the late night discussons as college students.

Good Food/Service in Casual Collegiate Atmosphere

By Donald W |

Just off the University of Chicago campus, Medici offers fairly good food and service in a casual atmosphere. The dining room is decorated eclectically with huge cross sections of tree trunks and drawings. The menu is fairly long and varied, with a large selection of sandwiches and coffees. There are many better eateries in Chicago, but Medici is conveniently located off the UC campus, adjacent to a great bakery, and just down the road from a fascinating bookstore.

Neighbourhood treasure

By Tammy22 |

This is the type of restaurant I always enjoy. Plenty of classic American brunch dishes on a Sunday and a varied menu all week. The wooden tables have all been signed by customers which gives it a feel of history.

First time

By Young&Traveling |

First time here and the food was pretty good... loved the fries there the thing shoe string type...lemonade was not so appealing to me but my boyfriend liked it... Server was nice but forgot my appetizer so don't know how the guac and chips are but the Blat sand which was good! Will definitely come back maybe for brunch.

Warm place for a casual dining

By Gayle M |

Enjoyed the Moroccan veggie stew on a cold day. Friend enjoyed turkey sandwich on raisin bread--brie optional. Apps, soups, sandwiches, burgers, and entrees--something for everyone in this casual spot. Beer, wine, coffee, and soft drinks... Good for after theatre, brunch or just a regular day! Bakery and carryout next door.

Someone has dropped the ball in the coffee department

By Isoruku |

Note: this review is for the Medici deli, which is next door to the restaurant. Same ownership. Perhaps I'm naive, but I'd like to think that anyone who has a task or job to do should take pride in doing it. Someone who maintains jet engines for an airline, the cable guy, the person who sweeps the floors at an office building after hours, or a physicist working at a particle accelerator - they can all take pride in doing their jobs well. But this is where the Medici diner fails miserably, at least when it comes to coffee. The fact is that for nearly a decade, I've been coming into the deli while visiting Hyde Park, the neighborhood where it is situated. And I like to stop by the Medici deli to grab a breakfast sandwich and a cappuccino. But the success rate when I have ordered a cappuccino has been no better than 40%. What I mean is that I don't normally get a carefully crafted cappuccino: espresso, some steamed milk, and ample foam. That is a cappuccino - not a cup of warm milk that has been mixed in with some espresso. And that's what they usually give me. Two days ago, I went in again, and once again was given not only a wet latte, but the drink was so scaldingly hot that I couldn't drink it. Even after fifteen minutes. After a sip or two, I threw it out. After paying for it. And not for the first time. I've emailed the Medici on three occasions over the last few years regarding this problem. And if the management has talked to the staff about what the definition of a cappuccino is and how to make it, then it isn't working because the baristas--at least some of them--aren't listening. In other words, they don't care. Again, call me naive, but I think you should care about what you do. Making matters worse is that someone cared enough in the past to offer Kickapoo coffee - very good when you can actually taste it (i.e. when it's not drowned by too much milk). Two stars is the most accurate rating I can give. You can certainly have a good meal at the deli and a good time, but if you care about coffee, I suggest you go elsewhere.

Perfectly average

By Thang V |

This is not meant to be a bad review. It is a perfectly good average restaurant in a college neighborhood. A normal menu of burgers, pizzas and salads and an average wait staff. If you want a good value eat, this place is perfectly fine.

Delicious sandwich

By Jdmay29 |

Stopped in with a friend. We both ordered the turkey with cranberry sauce on toasted cranberry walnut bread. Absolutely delicious. The fries were just average. Not very hot when they were served. Hot cider was nicely spiced. Service was great.

A Super Cafe for In & Out or to Sit Down

By Kimberly D |

Medici on 57th is a great little café in Hyde Park! I stop in often for coffee and a pastry, and I've always taken them to go. Their muffins are super. I've had chocolate banana, cranberry, and blackberry. The coffee is excellent! Strong but not too overpowering. In the summertime, there's outdoor seating! I highly recommend Medici!

Recurrent favorite

By Hannah R |

I have been to this restaurant several times and always enjoy the experience. Dine in is better than delivery. Great place for vegetarians. Several options, including a superb veggie burger.

great breakfast spot

By Emily B |

This is an awesome little place - the decor/vibes are really cool, a little hipster (not in a bad way). I ate breakfast here which was delicious, the coffee was tasty and they had a nice selection of breakfast foods

Lunch

By bookrec |

We were going to the Oriental Museum and wanted to eat first. This is close. Mostly sandwiches. They will make it a salad if you want. Not much seating inside but have tables outside. I had a manchego cheese, fig jam and arugala on a baquette. Too little cheese for all that bread so it was very dry.

Hidden Gem for Locals

By worldtraveler952015 |

Great upscale food in a casual ambience. Many University of Chicago students dine there and sit in their booths with writing all over it. It was a fun casual environment in the booth. The server did mess up our order quite a bit, but he had just started. He was, however, very nice and friendly. The location is easy to walk to from our hotel in Hyde Park. Definitely try this place out!

Good sandwiches, coming back tomorrow

By dma1969 |

We needed a light dinner so stopped here for sandwiches from the deli. The restaurant looked good, too, and I’d like to try the pizza. Daughter wants bakery for breakfast tomorrow so we will be back!

Great Local College Food

By DTBinFWD |

We stopped here on our way to the museum and we very happy with the quality of the food. A wide ranging menu that had something for everyone. I only wish we had known about the serving/portion sizes as none of could complete our meal. A great place to split a meal.

Great baguette, pastries, coffee, soup and sandwiches. A real treat to the taste buds!

By DMan1956 |

We ate here for lunch and for mid day snack. We loved the sandwiches . The bread they use and make is excellent. We particularly found the baguettes to be tasty, just the right combination of crunchy outside and soft inside. The tomato soup had a great taste and had a few vegetables in it which were a welcome addition. The coffee they serve is made by Kickapoo coffee which we immediately became addicted to. They have Kickapoo make a special blend just for them. We ended up buying two lbs of it. The croissants were very tasty and we especially liked the almond croissant. Highly recommend. near university and medical center University of Chicago. Nice outdoor seating as well.

UChicago Must

By Joseph G |

We always go to The Med when visiting my daughter or sopping her at college. They have a great selection of pizza and sandwiches along with milkshakes. The is a great spot to get a feeling for U Chicago

Great atmosphere. Awesome pizzas!

By Cabinlassie |

I remember this restaurant from the '60's when it was behind The Green Door Bookstore further down 57th street. Many many years have passed. It has a funky place of its own with dining upstairs and down. On a Saturday night around 6.30pm there was over 30mins. Wait for a table, but it was worth it. The pizzas are even better than I remembered. There are few places to eat in this area so this one will always be busy, but it is well worth travelling a distance to. Certainly if you are in the Hyde Park area it is a must!

Disorganized, poorly run and average food.....

By Chicagonative_7 |

I realize that tidy is the Hyde Park Art Fair but that's no secret to the community...... So this joint is understaffed with over half the tables empty, and long waits? Why? Unless they were trying to turn away business, this place is run by amateurs. My eggs Benedict were below average - seems they couldn't afford the time to toast the English muffin so it was hot and crispy, used a very average hollandaise sauce (consider using the packaged Knorr- much tastier than yours!), skimpy pice of ham and a well cooked egg...... The potatoes were also undercooked and some were cool to cold..... The toasted cheese and bacon sandwich was marred by undercooked bacon but the pesto twist was nice. The last entree was a Mexican omelette which is disrespectful towards our friends south of the border...... Not enough flavor and not hot..... We've had good pizza and service here before so I'd return for that.... Brunch, never again!

Good food, inconsistent however

By Jason Park |

I admit the Med is hyped up due to the excessive sentimentality on the part of UChicago students towards the location. Hence the popularity. I personally like the food, but the service is okay at best. Also, the shakes are a hit or miss, so taking points off for the inconsistency of the food/drinks.

Sandwiches Worth a Drive to Chicago

By AmateurSpiceMan |

We wanted to explore the neighborhood near the Museum of Science of Industry and found Medici in an online search. We got 3 sandwiches; Arrabiata, Smoky Joe and Cranberry Turkey. The Arrabiata was flavorful and a bit spicy as expected; the bread was chewy and the balsamic pesto was nice but not invasive. The Smoky Joe was meaty and thick. The Cranberry Turkey was almost a Thanksgiving teaser. The walnut/cranberry bread inspired us to attempt baking our own version at home because it isn't for sale in the bakery. The cheeses were rich and appropriate on each. The fries were savory and delicious. When we come back we'll probably eat both lunch and dinner there. What a neighborhood gem!

Good lunch spot

Definitely has a college student hangout feel. They have a solid lunch selection. Good breakfast or lunch spot if you're visiting the Robie house two blocks away. Enjoyed the turkey, Brie and cranberry on a house made nut bread and the Cubano special. Friendly and welcoming staff. Restaurant entrance is the door on the right and their take out business is nextdoor on the left, behind the outdoor seating area.

Great food, good atmosphere

We came here for lunch. I had the garbage burger, which was really good, one of the best ones I've had on our trip to Chicago. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. The interior is very student-like, and it has a nice atmosphere. This place is not touristic at all, so if you want to go to someplace authentic and local, I would defenitely recommend coming here.

Very good!

Four of us visited in March for a quick supper outing and it was wonderful. The food was exceptionally prepared and the server was so sweet. Loved the decor and interior design of the place...very fun. Want to go back in the summer months since it opens up to the outside. Definitely, we would go back!

Family friendly. Good food.

Vastly improved on the restaurant side - great options

This is a great bakery and restaurant that has freshly squeezed orange juice, kid friendly food, and even options for allergy sufferers. The food does not disappoint. A real Hyde Park casual gem. BYOB.

Graffiti Pizza

By BethanyB |

We had a brief pizza and salad party with friends at this graffiti laden establishment. They put our group near a large window away from other patrons, which was welcomed considering we had five children, ages 6-10, in our party. They were friendly, speedy, and the pizza and salad were tasty.

Nice Hot Chocolate

Stopped here while visiting Robie House and MSI. Loved the Mexicana hot Chocolate! Croissants, breads and bagels all looked fantastic. Great service and funky music.

Great atmosphere and good food. The interior is unique with a lot of graffiti and interesting surroundings. The food is good and service friendly. I didnt eat breakfast, but I hear it is their specialty.

Delicious and Adorable

I've been to Medici a number of times and it's a great restaurant. The food is tasty and reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is casual and cozy. It's a pretty versatile location and good for friends, family, or a date. There's also a cafe next door (also called Medici) which has great pastries and coffees. Definitely recommend!

Average Restaurant

I came here with my friends, the good thing about medici is you can bring your own beer and wine. I ordered a steak and fries, it was good only but nothing special. The place is cozy to chat with your friends.

Upscale College Campus Deli

By jim_gets_around |

Italian deli with a lot of the new-age menu twists. I like the sub with fresh mozarella and tomato with basil (Its a caprise salad on a bun). Really good. Italian sub just as good. Dining room is typical college joint. People have written on the walls and tables. But the real experience is during the summer. There is a carry out counter. Order there and eat at the tables on the sidewalk, or even across the street in the park.

On our go to list

Nice deli/bakery when you need some quick food. They have both hot and cold sandwiches and ready to go salads. I love the bread and muffins. They also have gluten free bread for sandwiches. There may not be seating so be prepared to stop and go. The restaurant next door is great too. And they have more seating and huge meals available.
