Good food

By Towleway |

We got there late, so they rushed us a bit to get our order in and finish eating, but other than that, we had a decent experience. Food was pretty good, but we weren't blown away.

Incredible Thai food!!!

By rockydogz1 |

We would recommend that you ask for waiter their one or two, top specials. You will probably get something you've never had before and find it absolutely incredible. That was our experience. We had something with nuts and seafood and seasoning and all kinds of things that we would never, ever choose and it was so incredible we can't wait to go back.

hipster thai happy hour

By birdbark |

We stopped in Mee Sen for some afternoon drinks and eats. The neighborhood is fun and there are many other choices nearby for eating and shopping. Mee Sen has terrific food and the cocktails were really tasty and interesting. Really great hipster vibe and good music.

Late night outdoor dinner

By Jane S |

Small restaurant that appears to be popular in the Mississippi St area. You may have to wait awhile for a table. Tables are small and casual. Two of us had the pad Thai with chicken. It was very delicious and not too spicy. Husband had the dark broth beef soup with mushroom. He thought it was a little different and wished he had ordered ours. Price was reasonable. The area is fun for people watching too.

Should be out of business soon

By HumboldtDave |

Terrible service, lackluster food, overpriced. The waitstaff are unfamiliar with the menu and rec'd a very spicy choice for our young children!

Food Tour start.

By David W |

Really enjoyed the Thai cooking. People made me feel like I was back in the Bay Area. Thought the options for choices was excellent. Would go back.

Authentic and awesome!

By TravelWithRiley |

Got introduced to their glass noodle salad and blueberry soda during a food tour and was hooked! After the tour, went back for a full entree of the exact same items and couldn't be happier!

Wonderful Thai Food in NE (Mississippi Ave)

By Portlandman2 |

Christmas Eve, what's open, been around this town's Asian restaurants X10, chose this from another review site (starting with Y). Been to Thailand many, many times since 1978, love Thai food. My review: GO HERE! Had green mussels in hot pot, egg noodles with pork, crab and greens. Impressed by fresh taste of food, the skillful combination of flavors. Does not taste like generic Thai food! Ignore reviews focusing on service written by the overly privileged classes.

Best Boat Noodle

By Jen S |

Real authentic Thai food, at its finest. Everything from the decor down to their condiments. Nice ambience + outdoor seating. Great for lunch, date night, or family meals. I’ve yet to try one bad dish there. Oh, and they have specialty drinks that are pretty strong too!

Delicious little Thai place

By Brandon S |

The food was great. We had Pad Khee Mao with squid and a veggie noodle soup. Both were excellent. The cocktails were also great if a bit sweet.

Love this Restaurant!

By Valarie E |

Knowing how much I love Thai food, my daughter-in-law treated me to lunch at Meesen during my recent visit to Portland. What a great lunch! I had the Stir-fry noodles with shrimp and my daughter-in-law had the Yum Woon Sen - glass noodles with prawns, ground pork, scallions, peanuts & cilantro in a spicy lime dressing. Both dishes were out of this world! And the service was excellent... I can't wait to return to Portland and have lunch again at Meesen.

Best Thai food

By Carol D |

THE best Thai food we've ever had!! A must try if in Portland! Everything was so fresh & full of flavor, will be back before we head home. 😄

Best Thai TASTE!

By DavidSutton42 |

After calories what we all want for dinner is TASTE. How many times have you eaten bland food? Nothing particularly wrong with it except there was NO TASTE! (That's why I quit buying sandwiches at Subway). This restaurant's food has TASTE! It can be hot if you want (we don't) but above all it has to be tasty. If everything on the plate tastes like everything else, go somewhere else. Go to Mee Sen for turly TASTY FOOD. Distinctive and delicious. We've only done carry out so far, so can't really comment on the service except that the take out is ready in a flash and the server is pleasant. It's our #1 Thai restaurant.

Mee Sen Thai Eatery

By Hyenaden |

Upon arriving I asked for a table of four. I was ten minutes ahead of my friends who were joining me. I was met by a hostess that explained to me that I could wait at the bar because she wouldn't allow me to wait at the table or hold it for my friends. I asked if they allowed reservations, she explained yes but that I would have had to call earlier. I couldn't reserve the table now. I communicated with my wife on the phone and she called and was able to set up a reservation for us immediately with someone else over the phone. I ride my bike around the city. I have a beard. I wasn't dressed for dinner. I suppose I look penniless or homeless. The food here was rather delicious. We recently returned from Thailand so our authentic tongues are looking for a homeland taste. I had the Larb salad which could be served with any meat of your choice except fish. My favorite dish on the menu was the Roti Sank Ka Yha. A pan-fried Indian style dough stuffed with vanilla pandan custard. Divine. Delicious food. My friends were treated well. I had little interaction and eye contact with the woman who greeted me during our meal. Everyone I was with was very satisfied. This isn't at the top of my list for Thai in the city but definitely not a total loss and the area is incredibly quaint.

Not typical Thai food

By MnM1112 |

We kinda enjoyed everything we had, mussels in basil and Thai herbs, spring rolls with prawns, Tom yum with noodles, and pad Thai with chicken. 4 items were split for a light meal for the 3 of us. Liked the fresh herbs and large mussels most of all the dishes but wouldn't go back. Overall, the flavors were only Thai-like and sweet forward, not really the depth and range we like in Thai food. Kudos for condiments and fish sauce already on the tables. They were out of the mango sticky rice and our 2nd dessert choice so we opted for none. Light lunch with tip for 3, $51. Atmosphere was almost bar-like. Repurposed whiskey bottles on the table for tap water look like they need a good scrubbing when they catch sunshine.

The Best Thai I Had in Portland

By hgelfand |

This is a high quality, excellent value restaurant I tried out one day for lunch and have returned to several times. The best dish I had was wide rice noodles that were wonderfully flavored and slippery and accompanied with scrambled eggs, tofu, and vegetables. The outdoor tables are great during the day, and at night the interior is relaxing and fun. We ate at numerous Thai places in northern Portland and this was in a class of its own. There is also an evening happy hour menu with some great options.

Not your usual Thai restaurant -- excellent!

By Sillydg |

You'll find a few of the "usual" Thai menu items, here, but much, much more. Experiment with the small plates, and explore the many noodle and rice dishes with fresh fish, mussels, pork, vegetables and other examples of Thai street food. Indoor and outdoor seating and very quick service unless they're slammed.

I'll be back

By TravelIsAsTravelDoes |

What a GREAT place! I was promptly greeted as I walked up and we had a great seat outside. The food was delicious!! ...our server gave us some recommendations, we took her up on them and WOW! The tenderloin dish was really great and the curry was very flavorful with a bit of a kick. We'll be back for sure.

Lovely !

By Foresthillphil |

Poached chicken noodle soup..to die for . Texture , perfect meat, kind of like a laksa but better. Great service.

Dinner for TW0

By AJ S |

Shared Pad Thai. It was tasty.Generous portion; enough for two. We also tried wings with peanut sauce. Our server was attentive. Food was prepared as advertised and arrived quickly. The restaurant was clean. Nice vibe. Great place to share a quiet dinner. There is seating inside and outside. Street parking and it is tight in that area.

Hip atmosphere! The #23 was fantastic.

By elana74 |

It is not often you find excellent Thai food in a cool, unique atmosphere. I loved the hand drawn sketches on the wall, the chilled out servers and most of all, the #23. Great cocktails, too!

Best

By lucialuminosa |

Love Mee Sen. Best Thai I've had in Portland. Try the Larb salad - amazing flavor! I'm currently living in Thailand for the next couple months and have tried several larb dishes out here, but Mee Sen's is still my favorite hands down :) Super nice staff & love the interior. Great spot!

A great find

By Rosie L |

This neighborhood place was just the ticket for a Mother's Day evening with family. Food was delicious and very reasonable. Service was slow at first but food came out quickly once ordered.

Delicious food, and great outdoor seating area

By SFTRVLR |

Recommend this place--- we got turned away from the brewpub down the block as we had kids with us (Note to anyone not from Oregon- the state has arcane laws about kids in restaurants that are considered mainly bars). But, we are glad we got turned away because we discovered Mee Sen Thai. Really tasty Thai food in a variety of spice levels. Good appetizers (though many of them seemed very similar as they were fried. Delicious but all melded together in my memory). Good solid Thai entrees. Service was overall quite good. The most memorable part was sitting out on the nice front patio on a hot night.

WOW! Just wow

By leo r |

Best Thai food in town! The chicken curry soup was the best chicken curry I have ever had. The seafood is amazing, and they even had a Jasmine IPA on draft. Highly suggested, we will be returning here every time we pass by from now on.

Fatal encounter

By Stephane G |

While touring Portland we came across Mee Sen par accident. Nice from the outside, terrible from the inside. Passing the forgetful waitress and the staff busy watching their smartphones instead of attending to customers we found the food quite ordinary, missing the Thai touch and tasting like any other take away Chinese. Chery on the spring roll was a compulsory 18% tip printed on the sale slip to which we objected. Used to tip about 20% in the US we were told the story about paying 10% tax, etc...and starting arguing with the customer about it! Anyway, the management succeeded to shoot itself in the foot on the cheap: loosing one customer and getting a poor review...for 4$. Seriously...

Good Value at Lunch, Pleasant Atmosphere, Outdoor Seating

By RetColAF |

Thai food is our favorite. Of the dozen or more Thai restaurants we have visited in the Greater Portland area, this probably ranks about third--but may be first for atmosphere and outdoor seating. Food and service are both above average, and the value of the $9 lunch stir-fry options are best. Wait staff were very attentive, filling water jugs before they were empty, and removing used dishes almost immediately. Being on North Mississippi Avenue, one of the newer "in" places, we expected higher prices, so were pleasantly surprised. Before eating at Mee Sen, we walked around the area, investigating about ten other pubs and restaurants. We thought Mee Sen offered the best value and best outdoor seating. We will return.

Glass noodles are awesome

By RitaBrandley |

we started our food tour here and had the glass noodle salad with lime vinaigrette with amazing traditional sausage. I usually don't like Thai pod, but this was outstanding! At the end of our food tour, we all voted for the glass noodles as our favorite!

Distinct flavor

By WWTreesh |

Really great spicy food- an interesting take On Thai. I had crispy Larb salad and it was out of this world though I suppose the spring rolls were a little bland bit the Larb was so good it didn't matter

Great food and drinks

By fwatso |

Completely unassuming from the outside, this place packs a punch of authentic Thai cuisine. I had the Pad See U with chicken and it was one of the best I've ever had. The lychee crush drink was so good. I don't know where they found fresh lychee in winter and I don't care. It was inexpensive and fast, the atmosphere was personal and the service was great. No complaints, would love to go back a million times!

It was worth waiting in Portland traffic to get there!

By nbcrabgirl |

We met some friends here and after an absolutely hideous trip on the freeway system we were thinking "this had better be worth it!" And it surely was :) Appetizers were divine - spicy chicken wings were the bomb! I can't pronounce any of the dishes but everyone at the table raved over their meals - and the Lychee mixed drink was the perfect complement to my meal! Would definitely return at any opportunity!

Disappointing Pad Kee Mao

By David L |

Had take out here the other day and it was mostly disappointing. Ordered salad rolls and they wer excellent. However, the main dish, Pad See Mao was very disappointing. It tasted nothing like any other Pad See Mao I've ever had. It wasn't bad, but it was not what I expected.

DONT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

By Grace K. |

My sister has SIBO and is on a limited diet because of that, many things irritate her bowels. She had been ordering a dish from here with instructions in the order for it to be gluten-free. Turns out she found out today when they gave her a different dish that all of those other times she ordered, twice a week for months, they’d been giving her the gluten version. She’s unknowingly been slowly inflaming her digestive system through their mistake. When we told the server there was no sorry or anything and she insinuated we’d done something wrong for that to happen. AVOID this place if you have intolerances or allergies or any dietary restrictions. The gluten free meal we got was bland and underwhelming compared to the other type.

A good place for cheap savory eats

By Pongitte10 |

Go at happy hour. You cannot go wrong with a bowl of pad Thai for $5. The house margarita was beautiful, a pale lavender hue. My friend seemed to like her vodka basil based Thai girlfriend.

Excellent Thai

By Mark M |

Among all the other Thai places one can go to, Meesen is definitely one of the best. Great appetizers, great soups, Thai Iced coffee, great dishes. I have yet to be disappointed in anything ordered there.

Excellent Thai

By Melinda H |

We really enjoyed a late lunch here on a sunny Friday afternoon while visiting Portland. We were able to eat outside. Service was quick. The flavor profile of each of our meals was different, but really good. The flavors were not muddy as some Thai restaurants present. Spicy and interesting. I only wish I lived in the area so that I could make it my "go to" for Thai.

Great Happy hour!!

By Alejandra C |

We went with my husband and the food was great and the drinks awesome!!!! Enjoyable and family friendly! !!

Fantastic Thai food

By Natalie G |

Portland has a lot of great Thai food but this place is amazing, I have to visit every time I'm in town (twice in a weekend sometimes!) Great people, great cocktails, great food.

Lousy service and average food - high price point

By _tomnguyen001 |

Decided to give this place a try as it was highly rated by Eater, Portland. Well, first impression really was awful. We wanted to order take-out and the front young lady was extremely rude. She scolded and corrected me about what is comprised in the dish - despite me pointing to her what I was ordering. BTW - she told another couple behind me - No Room here. Stay outside!!! In any event, here is the review of the food. We ordered the Thai basil chicken wings, a basil stir-fried beef with Jasmine rice and an order of pad see ew with pork. The food was good but nothing special. The fried chicken wings were really dry and overwhelmed with the sauce. Just don't understand why such a high rating and lousy courtesy of their front house staff

Not your ordinary Thai Restaurant

By Joel L |

This restaurant has some very interesting Thai food that you don't see in other Thai places. Even the mixed drinks have a special Mee Sen twist to them. Was there with a party of 6 and the service was excellent. The next time I'm in Portland I will definitely find my way to Mississippi Ave. and this unique eatery.

Not your normal Thai restaurant!

By Lyn T |

Thai restaurants are as numerous in Portland as Mexican restaurants are in Phoenix. There's one on every corner. But Meesan was delightfully different. Different takes on normal thai fares. The crab stir fry that I had was so flavorful. Service was great. Highly recommend

First Thai Experience. Awesome!

By runaway2travel |

This was the first stop on my Forktown Food Tour and I have to say that I was impressed. I had never tried Thai food before, and as this was my first introduction I loved it! The location is in the Mississippi foodie area with a lot of nice options available. This location has indoor and outside seating, however I would recommend you go upstairs for a nice secluded little spot to eat. I had the Yum Woon Sen glass noodle salad & housemade blueberry soda. I really did not know what to expect, but this turned out to be my favorite thing on the food tour. I really was amazed by the flavors. If left to my own devices, I would never end up eating here nor ordering this dish. I was happy to have taken this food tour that provided a little sampling into Thai and an awesome restaurant worth coming back too!

Papaya salad - yum!

By M0ther_of_5 |

We arrived late on a rainy winter week night and it was crowded but not uncomfortable. The papaya salad with shrimp and chicken was delicious. Very pleasant staff. Would come here again.

Not Your Dumbed Down American Thai

By William A |

Delicious, spicy Thai food served quickly in a quaint little restaurant on a real funky street. I had a noodelly kind of chicken soup with a big chicken leg in it, #24 on the menu. Wife had a veggie dish. Mine came with a side of sprouts and some sauce that was hoteesimo!

GREAT thai

By nchaffin |

Very ecletic interior. The food is FAST and really delicious. I'm pretty standard and don't step out of the pad thai with shrimp box, but oh man is this place good.

Tasty Thai Food

By Paul_Jay_Adventures |

Having just moved to Portland, I've been on a mission to find some great Thai food. I've tried many places and would say that this is one of the best ones so far. I had the chicken satay and the basil stir fry. Both were delicious. They also have a happy hour if you like to drink. Atmosphere and location are both great. Definitely recommend trying this place.

Great delivery!

By H Marque |

Possibly the best crab Rangoon I have ever had! Excellent pad see you also. Quickly delivery. Best Asian cuisine in this area of Portland I’ve had so far.

Fast service!

By Amy V |

This place has to be the quickest place I've received a meal! We went around 8:00pm on a Friday night. Our food was delicious, but I have had more flavorful pad Thai.

Tempting Thai

By lablifer |

We were there for the happy hour small plates and noodle bowls. My fish noodle bowl was spicy and chock-full of 4 kinds of fish and shrimp. My niece said her vegan drunken noodles were excellent. Lots of condiments to heat up the spiciness if desired.

Dinner with my fam

By Avik C |

Located conveniently right off Mississippi, it is quite a hip place where you have the choice to sit. On a summer day, I would advice you to sit out and enjoy the courtyard setting they have. As for the food, it is universally of good taste no mater what you order. One thing that really really grossed me out to see is the fried grass-hoppers, I kid you not The entrees are very good no matter what you order

Enjoyable food

By Nancy W |

This is a good place to go for a good, filling, quick Thai lunch. The only bad thing about this restaurant is the parking!

Mediocre

By wendyh89 |

I want to like this place since it has high ratings but the food is just mediocre for me. The service was wonderful and the shop itself is so cute. I ordered the pad see ew with beef, medium spicy. I definitely could taste the hint of spice but I find the dish itself is a little more on the sweeter side than the savory, salty side. The beef was way too tough. I was surprised to find the portion to be on the smaller side. My boyfriend ordered the kao soi gai which is supposedly their most popular dish. While the chicken meat was extremely tender and just fell off the bone, the broth was lacking flavor and that extra oomph. Another friend and I was looking for some seafood tom yum soup served with rice (not noodles) but she said they don't serve that there. I don't think I will be back.

Holy Thai Food Batman

By aamartinezjr |

This place was amazing, great food, drinks and atmosphere. The food was literally brought to us in less then five minutes. The fried chicken, to die for, a must. One of the best pad see ew I ever had and make sure you get it with beef. The shrimp spring rolls, curry soup dish with chicken that falls off the bone was great, hearty but tasty.

Great food after little neighborhood stroll

By Betty V |

Randomly went by and decided to have dinner when walking around the neighborhood. Their outdoor seating was just too inviting! We ended up having four different vegetarian dishes and each one was great! I loved their noodle soup, very simple but great taste. Everything we had was very fresh and had good taste to it, some a bit more on the spicy end. Also, cocktails were amazing, though a bit pricy. Will come back for sure.

Wow! The best!

By SleepV6Cr |

I think this is my 100+ review. Majority of them are restaurants and this by far the best Thai restaurant I've eaten in for a very long time. Find it. Come here.!

One of our favorites

By ZESTYPDX |

If you don't want to wait at Pok Pok, try this place or Kinara Thai (SW). This is one of our favorites - good food, good value, and it feels like Thailand (especially in warm weather)!

Creative Menu and selection

By eatintheclaw |

Visited here recently. Not the normal type of Thai food I am used to but it was all good and tasty. Service seemed to be a bit lacking and I had to ask for water a couple times

Fun & Tasty

By Chamborres |

We dinned at Mee Sen with a small group of friends. We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere that seems popular amongst Portland eateries as of late: a few picnic-style tables with a 5-6 seat bar. The size of a mom and pop restaurant, but with more class and style. The LaiLai cocktails, made with a Thai spice whiskey called Mekhong, were creative and delicious. There was a good variety of food on the menu, including the typical dishes you'd expect at a Thai restaurant in the States, as well as some lesser known delicacies. Their Pad Thai is the best we've ever had. The soups are flavorful and served hot. While they don't have coconut ice cream, they do have some fun and funky desserts. We tried the ***, which includes cubes of warm sweet bread served with a green dipping sauce; a fantastic way to end the night! The dishes are reasonably priced, and this is definitely a place where ordering a few dishes and sharing can enhance your meal. We highly recommend Mee Sen for those seeking a nice yet casual dining experience in the Mississippi Street area.

My Favorite Thai Restaurant in Portland

By MyNewDay |

I love the food and the fantastic customer service at Mee-Sen. This is one of my first stops whenever I'm in Portland. The prawn wraps are delicious - the spicy sweet dip is perfect. Each time I visit I try a different entrée, nothing has disappointed me. The service is always friendly and super fast.

Best flavor in town! Excellent value!

By MillJill224 |

No reservations or parking- put your name on the list and take an uber to lower your stress of circling the block 100 times trying to find parking. That's the nature of this super popular neighborhood! The hot wings, fried won tons and fried pot stickers are amazing. Best value in town! Dishes are a good portion size. We ha the pad Thai and fried chicken. The explosion of flavor and excellent value blew me away. Try the tamarind margarita! Service was friendly- will definitely be back!

Marginal food and Terrible Service !!

By John L |

Wow !! I am shocked to see good comments here... My wife and I were there on 9/30/12 and the food was bland, and the service was atrocious. My wife ordered the "meat balls" and they were rubbery, and bland. It's Thai Food.. it is not supposed to be bland... And Yikes... the waitress was a complete wreck. The place was nearly deserted, so I have no idea what kept distracting her, but the service was shockingly bad. Then there was the cook... I think he really ruined the whole experience for us. We made a simple request... We asked to have the tails removed from the shrimp, before it was cooked, so that my wife didn't have to root around in the sauce, to pull the tails off (She wanted to avoid burning her hands trying to remove the shrimp tails herself). Every restaurant we have ever made this request has happily complied, except this one. I was stunned to see how slow they were and yet, they refused to accommodate this simple request. I really you will reconsider dining here. It was really a terrible experience.
