Diner, good experience

By Markus V |

I have visit there a couple of times. From there you get burgers, Shakes, sandwitches etc. Typical diner food. Good experience but nothing special.

Food was amazing

By Tami M |

The food was so good! We got the turkey leg and french fries. I also got a side of onion rings. My husband got a cheeseburger and thought it was very good.

Old Fashioned Treatment Day or Night

By Karen H |

I enjoyed the daytime and nighttime atmosphere and finding a seat was easy. I know when a wait staff is tiring and I never found that to be true here.

great place to eat

By themurrays-barnsley |

highly recommend this diner, really authentic american diner, juke box on the tables to put the songs on you want to hear. Food is fab, but very large portions, wayyyy to much to eat. Had breakfast and lunch there. The milkshakes are great too, highly recommend

Loved the breakfast

By Sarah R |

We spent quite a bit of time chilling here, the food was gorgeous and plentiful and the staff were really friendly and interesting, they were more than happy to chat away with you if the place wasn't too busy. Usual free refills on the coffee and it's a great place to start your day well, have a filling breakfast in a retro place with plenty to keep your eyes amused

Great Diner fades into Mediocrity

By PB Mccool |

We have eaten at Mel’s regularly when in LA. The quality and presentation of food during our last lunch was underwhelming. Not sure whether there has been a change in ownership and/or management but something is missing. What a disappointment.

Amusment park food, OK, overpriced, no refills

By JetSkiRacr1 |

First, what a scam. Coke Freestyle with no refills. Should have like a 30min window or something. Burgers are ok, Coleslaw is tasteless. Get a snack or shake and skip it and go to the citywalk to eat a meal.

Excellent

By shagron |

Visited here with my partner as part of a tour. They serve the best milk shakes. The food and service are excellent

Great food and friendly staff

By Anne Marie |

We absolutely loved the 50's theme and the food was delicious! Little pricey, but then again, you are in LA.

great 50's diner

By kimslade7 |

love mel's diner, food was great and the music on the jukebox takes you back, chilli cheese fries!!!

Excellent breakfast at Mel’s Diner!

By Ildiko M |

Sound this gem accidentally and it was an absolute delight. Great food, great ambiance, great service! Our serves was Gerardo - he has one of those genuine smiles that shows he enjoys his work.

the best burger in the US!

By didjjetta |

We stumbled across this in Hollywood. The freshest burger i had the entire trip! Shakes to die for and apple pie omg!!

Mel's Diner Hollywood

By icemom2009 |

This diner really reminds me of the old Hollywood. It was very busy, the host was pleasant, the waitress was great, the food is good, & reasonably priced, & it is 1 block from Hollywood Blvd. No complaints at all from me. Stop in next time you visit Hollywood!

Atmosphere is the best part, food is average

By blaze_03 |

We went for a late night dinner. The place has a fun atmosphere. Great variety of people. I actually saw Anne Ramsay, best known for her role as Lisa Stemple on Mad About You. It really made me feel like I was in Hollywood. The food was just average but it was priced on the higher side. We probably wouldn't return because there are a lot of great places to try on the Strip.

Nothing Special

By murphydarla |

I was expecting something from like the Mel's diner in San Francisco I guess. This was just burgers and fries. The next day we ate at the Jurrassic Park diner and it was exactly the same as Mel's diner just a different name.

Terrible

By MikeStrachan |

We ordered delivery from here for dinner. The fries that came with a burger were ice cold and they forgot my soup. It wasn't a difficult order to get right. Whether the soup was the fault of the driver I'm not sure - but the responsibility still lays with Mel's. Never again.

Great little Diner

By Ipassgas |

Ate here w the family one night while walking among the stars. Classic 50's diner w a great menu. Service was great. Always prompt and friendly. Our food was all excellent. A bit more pricey than you'd usually pay at similar places, but tat should be expected in Hollywood.

Iconic American Diner

By agee10 |

Loved the atmosphere. Staff were having a good time. Decor is what you'd expect from an American diner. Yummy milkshakes. Food enormous. We shared a main between the two of us and still had enough for a take out box. Surprisingly not as busy as you'd expect for a diner in this location.

Average Food, lousy service

By Christian T |

Waited for 20 minutes to get table cleaned or get someone to take my order. Food not worth to deal with disinterested staff

As quick lunches go, i guess it was ok

By G_EvansWales |

There are a lot of places to choose from for lunch in Universal studios, we went for fast food as we wanted to make ether most of our time here. The burgers were ok but nothing special and the drinks were suppressed (no surprise there!). Refusing to serve alcohol (just a beer) to me (I am 60) as I could not prove my age was bordering on the ridiculous!

Excellent breakfast

By janetT19 |

We had breakfast here at each of our three days in West Hollywood. It has been open since the forties with lots of memorabilia. It has very reasonable prices and good service. They served me the best tasting steak and eggs that I have ever had. Definitely would check it out if you are in Hollywood.

Reasonable Dining

By Doug C |

My family and I were in L.A. for a few days staying near Hollywood Blvd. we were surprised at the lack of choices we had for breakfast each day. There was a restaurant in the hotel, but it came with a Hollywood price tag. Fortunately we were only a couple of blocks from Mel's Diner on N. Highland Avenue. We ate there for breakfast several days and each time it was a great choice. It was very consistent and the food was really good to be a chain diner. But most of all it was reasonably priced. I was very surprised at the range of the menu from basic bacon and eggs to some actual low fat, gluten free options. My 12 year old always found something he liked, which isn't always easy. So if you are in Hollywood and don't want to pay for a meal like you are a movie star, you can get a very good meal at Mel's, and if you are there for breakfast go ahead and hit Hollywood Blvd while the crowd is sleeping, you will be able to actually see the stars.

A must!

By Richard B |

I love Mels Diner - its the first stopper me every time! The food is amazing (for breakfast, lunch or dinner) and staff friendly. Be prepared to wait at busy times - always best to call and book a table.

Take Me Back To The 50's

By sabers86 |

The atmosphere is like being in the 50's. From the booths to the tables and all the signs and pictures take you back to golden area of the 50's. The waitresses and waiters have on 50's garb. Now that you are in the mood. Sit down and enjoy club BLT with fries or a cheeseburger loaded with your choice of condiment on it. Remember the REAL chocolate malted milk-just order it. As you leave they have t-shirts and the other usual items offered for sale. Live the 50's one more time.

An ok breakfast with bad glutenfree pancakes!

By fiveeats |

We ate breakfast here one day. The place was kind of dirty, and the server a bit stressed out. We ordered some pancakes,, fruits and orange juices. They said the orange juice was freshly squeezed but it was for sure not. The pancakes were average, but with a good consistence. My wife ordered gluten free pancakes, which were horrible. I tasted a bit and had to spit it out. All in all nothin more than average (the gluten free much less than average). Will not return my visit.

Fun place, good homemade food

By Cher1999 |

What a great place filled with nostalgia, the waitresses are wicked cute, like hopsock, though it did remind me of The diner in the show Alice, ( now I am showing my age), the service was great, the menu offers quite a variety, the food portions were large and tasted like homemade heaven. It’s easy to get wrapped up with all the photos and other interesting items, definitely a blast from the past. There is ample parking which is great being right on Sunset Blvd.

Hollywood must visit

By Lindsey S |

Service was good, food was good, ambiance was touristy. You have to check it out for the history but don't expect fine cuisine!

Fast service good food

By Melissa |

We went at 12:30pm on a Sunday and waited less than a minute to order. We had a number 1 & 4 (Big Mel and chilli cheese dog). Service was good and food was great.

loved our waitress

By mary r |

she was funny and on point with coffee and breakfast. The coffee was outstanding and the food was good, the cook actually knows what over medium eggs are loved it great place to eat

Love the burger's at Mel's

By Elizabeth O |

The chili dogs are huge, way more than my 8 year old could eat. I loved the burgers, bacon was nice and crispy.

Great place for Supper!

By SMBIker |

It was a great place to go for supper, the food was good, the service was good and it didn't take long to get out\r food.

A little bit of nostalgia

By MoiraS78 |

Excellent food and a little bit of nostalgic remembrance for anyone old enough to remember the old-style diners (whether from real life of the movies). Mel's is a fun place to stop and people-watch for a while, and enjoy some classic fast food.

Wow

By Siyami |

Best hamburger ever had. First lady at checkin was wundeba, them service and delivery fantastic. Best fast food ever had.

Delicious Juices!

By LuxuryTraveller111 |

The fresh juices are a GREAT addition to the menu - especially the green juice! The service is always fast and friendly, it's really great value at only $6.25 for a large juice - if they make too much they give you the extra!! If you feel like a treat then I would recommend the french toast with strawberries. The staff are great at catering to special requests and are willing to combine foods that are not on the menu so it is guaranteed that you will find something you LOVE!

Love this place!

By Colleen C |

Amazing food and setting....very fun and retro! Highly recommend for couples or families. Food and service were top notch!

Great place off the Hollywood

By Henrik A |

Great place off the Hollywood Boulevard. We had the pancakes which was not on the menu. Really good!!

Came for a quick bite

By Nailcutter |

Came here prior to going to the Jimmy Kimmel show. Service was decent. Cobb salad was better than expected with real turkey breat. Salad was large but not cheap at $15. Grilled chicken sandwich was also decent. Chicken well cooked and came with fixings. Fries were just ok. You can find a 10% off coupon on the street.

Good food, great prices, fun atmosphere

By madeline |

We really enjoyed this place, the Route 66 burger was amazing and the milkshakes are great. Classic old diner feel. Portions are huge and prices are low. The jukeboxes were fun until we realized the place sat in silence if no one was paying for songs. We weren't sitting near one so we had to keep getting up so we didn't eat in awkward silence because no one else was choosing songs. Otherwise great place!

Simply perfect

By Susan M |

Had breakfast at Mel's. great atmosphere with friendly staff. Food was delicious and exactly what we needed.

Back in time

By Vanessa |

Just around the corner from the Hollywood & Highland Shopping Centre is Mel's Diner. It's like stepping back in time to the 50's. Food was yum and the staff were friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Great Meal

By Laurel R |

My niece and I had dinner here during our recent vacation, and we enjoyed it. We set outside, so we could people watch. The service was really good, and I enjoyed my pot roast which was the special of the day. The cost is low considering the quality of the meal, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is upbeat.

A quick restaurant in the park

By Corinne M Chanel |

One of the many restaurants in the park Universal Studios, we settled there fast food style it's convenient it doesn't take much time and you don't expect high gastronomy style burger, tenders, fries and it was fast enough

Skip it

By MikeMc33 |

Stopped for lunch there on a suggestion from locals. Ordered, and food took little longer than expected to arrive. Waitress had a Melissa McCarthy vibe to her, which is fine if you like that attitude. Hair on my plate and the potato salad hard some small hard item I bit down on. By the time we got out for 5 people it was over 100.00....I am guessing eating in Hollywood is going to be expensive no matter where you go. I’d find some other place to try.

Big Breakfast

By Sam R |

This is a retro diner with mini jukeboxes at each table and the food was good and reasonably priced. I chose the fruit and yoghurt which was plentiful, there was a huge bowl of yoghurt and a massive pile of fruit, apples, strawberries, pineapple and blueberries and not filled with the ubiquitous banana which I hate. My husband had the hash (large pile of freshly cooked potato gratings), bacon sausage and eggs, it was very tasty. The coffee was good and the server attentive.

Fast food!

By TAROTZAMM |

ON our second day at the Universal Studios, we had lunch at Mel's Diner and opted for the chicken strips/tenders with fries. It was good.

Burgers Inside Universal Studios!

By misopiso88 |

If you are looking for a quick and tasty meal at Universal, Mel's is a good option. Regular and veggie burgers as well as tater tots. Prices aren't bad considering you are inside the park.

Delicious All Around

By Nich0las_K2014 |

The bacon burger I had was absolutely scrumptious. The service was really spectacular. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone just coming from a walk of the Hollywood strip.

Good Burgers and Great Service

By 49andholding |

Five in our party and we got out under $88. Well worth the price and the fun. Waitress was excellent. Too much food for me to eat had to get a doggie bag. Chocolate shake yummy.

Great atmosphere

By Camper578744 |

Stopped in on a hot day for a cool treat. Milkshakes are great, beer is cold and environment, including wait staff, is a throwback to the good ole days. Highly recommend it when visiting L.A.

Drinks

By Roberta P |

Poor service restaurant was very warm I ordered a beer it was warm staff was not attentive .. would not recommend it !

Definitely stop when in Hollywood!

By cjw893 |

This place is so cool.staff are rrally friendly and great menu. Burger was so good!! Cooked well and not fatty. Definitely recommend a stop in there!?

Fantastic burgers

By ifamily66 |

Best food here We also went to Mels Diner in Beverlly hills Also great food there too Got to try the hamburgers

Great place for breakfast

By Globalwelshgirl |

Perfect place to have breakfast. Good (and extensive) menu at reasonable prices. Coffee constantly refilled. Good service, fast.

Fun 60's experience.

By Shawni_and_Buck |

You know you are probably going to pay a lot for food that is just okay when you go to an amusement park anywhere, so don't be surprised that this is no different. However, the fun theme does make this worth the stop. It was a bit hard to find a table at first, but we eventually did. This was expected too. We were disappointed that there were no refills on drinks. I get that they don't want people coming back all day for free refills, but maybe a one-time refill or a half-an-hour time limit would be nice. The drinks are pricey, and we didn't think they would really be losing out much with these self serves if they weren't quite so tight on the one fill rule. Overall, this is a nice place to stop and grab a bite to eat and do some people watching if you are sitting in the outside section. We would probably try some place different next time mainly just to try something new. However, we don't have anything awful to say about this spot either.

Cracking diner !

By Cathy B |

We had breakfast here the 3 days we were here. Lovely experience, very friendly & efficient staff, food very good. A brilliant way to start the day. We were really happy to have found this, as the hotel we stayed in had a ludicrously expensive breakfast menu.

Huge meals and great atmosphere.

By Joshane615 |

We tried to order a meal each here, but upon the advise of our waiter only ordered one. Thank goodness, as the meals are huge! We ordered the ribs and they split the meal onto two plates for us. It was delicious. The atmosphere is great here. Loved that we could choose songs on our personal duke box for a quarter, to play in the resturant. Staff were friendly too!

Very different to San Francisco

By Andrew S |

After a less than pleasant experience in San Francisco, we decided to try again in Hollywood. What a difference. Service, food, quality were all what you'd expect and should get. The prices are still too high for what it is, so if on a budget, don't bother. It's nothing special, but it is convenient as its 24/7.

Love this place

By PhillyHReviews |

Great food, good service, clean and I would definitely recommend. A good selection of food in the menu, we’ve only had breakfast there but will always revisit when back in LA.

A Bright Spot in my Day at Universal!

By NockieT |

Mel's Diner served authentic, fifties-style American hamburgers and french fries. The sauce they used was like my mother would make when we were kids. The decor, with photos of actors and stars, was fascinating. It had an "American Graffiti" feel to it and was a bright spot in my day at Universal.

Fun and yummy

By Jola O |

What a fun atmosphere! The food is typical diner food so just ok. I did love the coffee milkshake. Janet, our server was so much fun. We loved the experience. It was a bit too chilly to eat outdoors, but there is outdoor dining available.

Love the Milkshakes!

By Deanna K |

We were visiting the L.A. area, and a friend took us to Mel's on Hollywood Blvd. Make sure you try a milkshake...they are the best I've ever tasted. The food was okay, pretty standard for a theme restaurant. The jukeboxes by the tables were neat, although ours seemed to have a malfunction. The service was really good and the staff seemed happy to work there. I'd definitely go again. Later we found out that we were within a block or so of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt attending the premier of "Maleficent" which had not much to do with the restaurant but just added to the fun.

Not up to scratch

By rabbitf59 |

We were passing this restaurant around lunch time and the retro look sucked us in. My wife had her usual salad while I decided to go the whole 50"s thing with a cheese burger, fries and a coke. Seemed like a good idea if I could get the guy behind the counter to serve me instead of being in deep conversation with his friend. Finally get my order, the cheeseburger was drenched in liquid cheese, so that, no matter how you held it cheese dripped down your hand. the fries were barely warm and the coke was just coke. I asked my wife if the salad was ok, she said it's hard to mess up a salad. In the end I think it wise to avoid this place.

Old time Diner

By Charlie C |

Went here while in Los Angels food was good lots of choices including old times milkshakes. Would definitely recommend

Great burgers n shakes

By Melanie A |

Loved it from stepping in the door Fab friendly staff Great decor Lovely food and drink...well size portions Lots of choices on the menu

Excellent food & service on Sunset Strip...

By Margaret Q |

We came in for a late lunch after touring the La Brea Tar Pits which is only about 3 miles away on Wilshire Blvd. The parking was FREE and available with easy access right by the front door. Food was outstanding and we found the prices to be very reasonable. Cherry cokes, braised ribs grilled cheese with fries...$40 for two. We felt like the attraction as the tour buses went by. Excellent spot to people watch if you sit at the front of the diner or outside. Go and enjoy!!!

Mel's is a must

By Richo H |

We went as a family to Mel's diner , well well well it was awesome not just the food though the waitress we had was hilarious ,great at her job , and got our food out pronto , I would highly recommend this place .

Skip it!!

By Melissa F |

Had the cheeseburger. The burger itself was very processed and clearly a frozen burger. The fries were so so.Fresh bun.

Delicious food

By hope_925 |

Super good food, good variety and the order was fresh and hot and served fairly quickly I definitely recommend eating here while at Universal Studios

Yum!

By cmtx36 |

We had to make a stop at the iconic mel's. Quick service and good food. I had them make me a veggie juice which was delish. You can pick and choose what fruit and veggies you want. Had the short rib grilled cheese. OMG! A must stop in LA.

Funky fun, good food on Sunset strip

By Sunny K |

Good food in an old diner setting. Though technically newer than the 1950's you'd never know it with the decor. Breakfasts were particularly good. It is within walking distance of a number of Sunset Strip properties, but it also has a parking lot to the side if not too crowded...a real asset in hard-to-find parking in LA.

Friendly

By Jess S |

Loved the Diner and the servers were amazing have to say that the staff here were some of the friendliest we came across during our 3 week stay in the states. Food was great and the kids loved the whole experience.

One of the choice in Universal Studio Hollywood

By Mike W |

The onion ring are cold, Chocolate milk shake are not chocolate enough. Well, you are here, they are mostly similar, take your pick, they are pretty much same. it's more important to have fun than food.

Milkshakes to die for

By jodeci r |

This is a stop to be done. The restaurant itself is like stepping back into time where the whole atmosphere is just so cool. Jukeboxes set at tables where you can listen to your own music and also yet inspired by hanging photos of actors and music celebs. I brought my children here just for the experience and am so glad I did. They had the american hotdog with everything and peanut butter shakes to go with it.lol. Call me crazy but even I liked the flavour lol. the menu isnt pricey and the selections of food are what to expect from an american restaurant. Bare in mind if you drive they do have parking next door to which comes with a charge.

Way way underrated restaurant

By Don H |

Good Ole Mel's isn't good Ole Mel's. They are an ever evolving culinary experience, dressed up as a coffee shop. At least the Sherman Oaks location is. These guys have bought into the plan, create excellence and serve it on a plate. Inspiring.

Fun place for lunch

By Big D McD |

Our sunseeker tour took us here for lunch. So glad they did. Food was good, typical but above average diner food. Great malted shakes served the old fashion way with old Hollywood photos on the wall. We didn't see any stars this time but the experience and food were fun nonetheless. Take the kids. We would love to go back. Great menu.

Utterly brilliant and truly Authentic American Experience

By Tash_Hill |

I have been fortunate to visit New York 4 times and this is my first time in LA! I am only here for 4 hours before going back to airport. I decided to have breakfast at Mels (never heard of the diner let alone read reviews) and what an amazing experience. The food was fantastic true American and exactly what I wanted! My waiter was Tom who was brilliant and attentive and made me feel really at home! I would recommend this to anyone visiting LA and looking for an American diner experience! The attention to detail is fantastic with juke boxes on most tables!! I was blown away by the experience and trust me I RARELY write reviews let alone positive ones! The price is bang on and appropriate to the place!

Watch out for the cranky server

By Jennifer L |

We were shocked to see that people who were quietly lining up where they thought was sensible were reamed out by one of the people taking orders for being in the wrong spot. Perhaps you should check and see if your signs are adequate. No idea what the food is like as we went elsewhere.

Yummie!

By realgoodtime2016 |

Great late breakfast in a nice atmosphere! The food was very tasty and we enjoyed eating there with a good friend. We will definitely come back!

Typical American Diner

By Derek M |

The food was great and service was excellent. It was a little expensive, but a great typical American diner.

A real shocker

By AdamS1970 |

This was the only negative restaurant experience we had in all our USA trip. We waited over an hour for our food, and when it came it was literally thrown at us by the terrible waiter who plainly heated his job. The food was only passable too. The only saving grace (karma in action) was they forgot to add my main meal to the bill. Usually i would bring this up but they were all so rude and pretentious i thought "tough luck for them". Truly a waste of our precious time. For great food in the area stick with Hard Rock and Cabo Wabo, always great.

Big Mel is just that....A Big Mel!

By Buman |

Wife and I stopped here for a quick bite. The big Mel is a big burger! Food was prepared quickly. Not many tables, however there are plenty outside. Small portion of slaw. Condiments were fully stocked. The place is clean. Prices in line with the other Universal establishments.

Americana Diner Experience

By Globetrotter |

We enjoyed a fantastic American Diner Experience, the decor was an authentic throwback to the 50's with the cute booths all that was missing was Fonzie, Richie Cunningham and the rest of the Happy Days gang. In true form the portions were HUGE!,,,, I had poached eggs which were served with potatoes , toast and turkey sausage the eggs were perfectly poached and Turkey sausage had a bit of bite. Once again brewed coffee was drinkable which is not always the case in the U.S my friend had a similar dish and included pancakes. Great breakfast experience will visit one more time before we leave

LA

By matthO5835PI |

We decided to stop in here before our trip to Jimmy Kimmel live it was good. The service was really good and the food was good not exceptional but good. I would try something else before I went back there.

Fun diner at Universal Studios!

By Nita B |

I was pleased they had a gluten free bun for my cheeseburger! Burger and fries were very good, but way too much to eat! Not cheap here, but not much is at the theme parks.

I love the food

By Oscar T |

Good food on later dining. I ordered the All American Meat Loaf and thick strawberry milkshake. Place was very relaxing and the prices are very reasonable. Good for budget conscious traveler and for those craving for good food at later hour.

50's Throwback

By SB01 |

A welcome escape from the brashness of Hollywood Boulevard this diner is a homage to the past. Some might find it a bit scruffy but I thought it was pitched about right. Burgers and sandwiches dominate, tasty and good portions. But it is the character of the place you visit for.

Be wary and probably choose somewhere else to eat

By DMR |

I am going to be as cordial as I can with this review. I can only say that after eating here I was careful with what I choose to eat anywhere in Universal studios. I ate here once and that was enough for me. All I ordered were chili cheese fries, that were mediocre, but didn't really think much about it after. my boyfriend has a cheeseburger and he said it was just burned and tasted just burnt and nothing could really save it. later on, I got food poisoning from what I had eaten. I knew it was caused by the food, because it was all I had eaten that day. I emailed the theme park and explained my situation and they were very accommodating and helpful. I'm glad it wasn't taking negatively, and they even offered me a free meal voucher since my last experience wasn't so great. I appreciated the gesture and accepted but have yet to use it because I'm just anxious too. I have not gone back since

Quick Bite at the Universal Park

By Diane E |

We had to stop as my SO's name is Mel- we shared a chicken sandwich basket which was just enough to hold us over till dinner time- the meat was real chicken meat and not something processed fries were good and the coleslaw was excellent Its a fast food place and you can sit in side our out we sat at tables out side good food

NJ

By Joy G |

This restaurant offered us great service in addition to delicious food at a reasonable price for Hollywood. Highly recommend.

American diner

By Kathryn T |

Visited here as part of a tour of Los Angeles. Very typical American diner. Huge portions. Food was basic diner but was good.

Dine out at Mel's!

By Pat H |

Mel's is set up like an old fashioned 50's or early 6o's diner. Some movie scenes from American Graffiti were shot here. There are picture stills from the movie in the place along with souvenirs for purchase. The menu has a great selection and the food is good. Look for the big sign Mel's with a waitress on it. Follow the sign into the parking lot.

Very poor service staff not very helpful and very bad attitude

By Liebling B |

Girl who served us was rude not only to us but other diners and called my partner a dick head had a real bad attitude and needs to be retrained so in future when customers come to eat here they will recommend this place

Decent food slow service

By Lorraine M |

Food was good indeed the corn beef hash was a real hit but the service was slow and the only place in LA where we were offered water or free drinks top ups!

Great staff - really good food

By Thefiveyeargang |

We went there last year, and went back there this year. Ronnie served us last year, and she was still there this year. The food was really good, you certainly get your money's worth. you can sit outside or inside. They have mini juke boxes on the table so you can select your song - you need coins for this.

Disappointing meal and service

By Molly |

We ate here while visiting Universal Studios Hollywood on 29th July. The service was decent, although the employee taking our order seemed uninterested and confused at times. The restaurant could be improved with some indoor seating, as all seats were taken, but the long queuing system taking up most the space was empty. However, the food was our main issue. There was limited choice on the menu, and when our food arrived, we were disappointed and did not enjoy it.

Fast and good!

By Mozelle L |

Service is fast and friendly. The vegitarian patty was really good! I was happy about that. We sat outside. However the inside atmosphere was cute

Pleasantly Surprised!

By Melissa M |

Great food, traditional diner atmosphere (very cool!) and quality service. The menu had such a big selection, we opted for slider burgers, fries and smoothies was delicious! Would definitely come back!

FUNKY FUN IN HOLLYWOOD

By ARLENE B |

Dining here is like a visit to old Hollywood. Lots of Hollywood famous classic photographs on the walls. Furnished in the style of the 50's and funky. Like it. Would have given more stars, but the service was lacking even tho they weren't very crowded. Classic comfort food was good.

Breakfast

By HollyJ E |

We went to the Mels on sunset, and it was perfect. Food was large portions but really tasty food, milkshakes are also worth a look. Food is reasonably priced for LA. and so much to look at in the restaurant will keep everyone on your table entertained.

The original spot at the end of Route 66

By bluegrassmom3 |

We ate at the original one in Santa Monica but I can not find it on this website. Go there! It is mid-century modern and so quaint! Loved our waitress.

Good burgers

By Lisa015 |

Food is always more expensive inside amusement parks but Mel's diner wasn't too bad. The burgers were basically made to order and the fresh buns were very good. For food inside the park, this was quite good although it was a bit on the greasy side. The drinks are very overpriced however!

Another great mels Diner

By 57chevycustom |

Great food great atmosphere more modern of course than the other Mel's but still has great appeal its worth a visit.

Decor is great but food and service could be better!

By PathManSlough |

Dropped in here for some very late breakfast today (about 1pm) and took a booth with an old juke-box. Ordered a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (lovely drink! Nice and hoppy!) and a wine for my wife. We hadn't eaten any breakfast so after checking with our waitress, we decided to order exactly that and placed an order for an Elvis Hash and Corned Beef Hash with two eggs. Food arrived and my wife noticed that her two eggs (which we had requested medium, which everywhere else in the USA means soft yolk) were cooked right through. I caught the attention of the waitress after a few minutes (she hadn't returned to check everything was OK), and she arranged for two new eggs to be cooked. My Elvis Hash of corned beef, green pepper and cheese was lacking a little in flavour (some celery would have improved it no end!) so the bottle of hot sauce came out, which did improve it. My hash browns were good, but the whole dish wasn't as hot as I like, and the portion sizes are miserly in comparison to what we have been eating on our Route 66 trip across America. A good restaurant to visit to take a few snaps, but don't go for good food or service.

Good choice when Ride Hopping in Universal

By UNNIMAYA |

While this is not as special and exclusive as Three Broomsticks in Harry Porter world in Universal studios, this is good place to grab lunch when your stomach is grumbling between rides. We had a Turkey leg deal - a good deal both in terms of taste and quantity, pricing . So if you are not looking for an exclusive experience while in Universal studio this would be a good choice

Ate here while visiting universal studios had a burger meal good fast food bit pricey but concider the location i guess

Somewhat disappointing

By InnaYYZ |

I often visit old time diners, at which I have great meals many times. I came to Mel's in part because I have a friend named "Mel." However, I think even he would be disappointed by the food quality here.

Could’ve been better

By Nikkie |

The place has a nice set up and the guy that welcome us was very nice and funny. Upon sitting down our waitress came over sounding dry as Popeyes biscuits. She didn’t introduce herself, ask question like a tourist attraction normally do and when she got our order for our drinks she didn’t even go make them. She went and stood by the manager and started having a conversation. We waited and when she came back didn’t even have the drinks with her. For me to find her name out I had to look at her name tag(Regina). The food was good and atmosphere was quiet, but I felt as if I was in the movie Grease. Other than the dry waitress it was good.

Nostalgic, Yummy, Worth the Trip!

By Bees-on-Earth |

Stopped here for a cold drink and a snack, but ended up having a slice of Marge's homemade cherry pie and a giant bowl of New England Clam Chowder to go with it. The menu had so many fun selections, it was hard to make a decision. I washed both items down with a fresh lemonade (or two), while my hubby devoured an afternoon breakfast, which he was equally enjoying. For a quarter you could play from the table top jukebox. The diner is decorated in nostalgic, iconic Los Ángeles diner history. Famous patrons include Marilyn Monroe. This is just a really cool place to stop, with yummy eats too. They will also validate your parking!

Great breakfast

By steveshieldshur |

Came hungry left happy. Bloody Marys, mimosas, eggs and service were great. Great breakfast seems easy to accomplish but can so many times get botched. Mel's diner gives you exactly what your looking for.

quick lunch

By HB |

The food was surprisingly good, although quite pricey. Portions were large enough that my daughter and I wished we had split our grilled chicken sandwiches and tater tots, rather than overeat before doing rides.

Great!

By Laura J |

Gorgeous burger, delicious sundae and a great atmosphere. The service was quick, friendly and just what we wanted after a long journey!

Fun

By msj65 |

Stopped in for breakfast one morning when in West Hollywood. Enjoyed the pancakes, omelet, and smoothie. Reasonable prices and large menu. Fun atmosphere and staff.

Quick, Tasty Meal

By John S |

We were walking by and stopped in for a late lunch or early supper. The service was excellent, and the food was tasty. The milkshakes were good, but I've had better. I had the triple decker clubhouse, and it was loaded with meat and vegetables. My daughter enjoyed looking at the photos of the celebrities who had been in the place.

Classic diner!

By TXRanney76 |

We stumbled upon Mel's when another restaurant had too long of a line and we were quite happy! The food is very good - there is a good variety of breakfast items to choose from. The coffee is pretty darn good too! Some of the staff still seemed a little sleepy but we were in no hurry so it didn't bother us. Most importantly the breakfast was good and hot! I had the waffle breakfast and ate every bite!! My hubby had the chili omelet and it was delish! I also really liked the hearty portions for the kids meal so that my little ones could share!

Unnecessarily Pricey

By Linda D |

Food was good, but we will not be returning for a $60 diner meal for 3. Note to management: that could be why no one eats at your restaurant during traditional meal times.

Diner but don’t drive up

By jcdeligirl |

Classic legendary diner but does not offer car service anymore. Service efficient and food as expected. I think it’s still popular because it’s legendary.

breakfast

By RockyB3 |

food was good, a bit of history to this restaurant being in the movie American Graffiti. Photos of all sorts famous people. Cool old-fashioned diner.

Just the place for a Milkshake

By caretaker21 |

Spent about 4 hours eating and talking with local friends and the food was just great and plentiful. No pressure from the staff to move on when we finished and the staff were extremely pleasant. It was so nice we went back the next day to get a milkshake and sit and enjoy the passing parade.

Mels

By Deborah S |

Feels and looks like an old fashioned American diner. Good food at a great price. Recommend the shakes and curly fries and hot dogs. Staff are very chatty and helpful.

Good food, great service, a little pricey...

By Randy and Rusti S |

We ate here as a family of 6. As a former waiter, I'm very picky about the service I receive. Our server here was excellent! I mean literally, outstanding. One of the best I've had in years! The ambience was pretty cool! The place looks like a classic diner. The menu had lots of options, but not quite as many as a typical real time diner. The only potential downfall was the pricing. While it was not out of line for a tourist type destination like Hollywood, it was extremely pricey for a diner. My nonofficial calculations had the average menu price for an entrée at around $15. But the food was very good and the $8. milkshakes were excellent.

Fun dining experience brings you back to the 60's

By Richard H |

A bunch of friends went to lunch here. What a unique dining experience! When you enter the diner, you are transported back to the 60's with the jukeboxes and seating. The food quality and quantity are amazing. We had burgers, salads and sandwiches with fries and onion rings. We left room for desert: pies and banana splits, which were great! Stop in this place for food if you are in the area!

Happy Days!!!

By Marcia M |

Good food and terrific setting, it felt like you were dining back in the 50/60's. Prices are very reasonable and staff very friendly.

...the beat goes on....

By itinerent |

Stopped into Mel's for a quick bite after a day of sightseeing. Sliding into a comfortable, clean booth we were quickly attended to by out waitress and served drinks promptly. We had burgers and pie all done well and tasty. We picked oldies from the booth's juke box and when it failed to play our waitress took our selections and put them into the system for us, showing us the customer comes first. The only thing missing was to have the Fonz walk through the door. Neat little spot!

Authentic American diner

By Nomad5522 |

We loved Mels diner. We were served by Lilly who was so very helpful and interesting, good luck for the future Lilly, our food was delicious even though we had small portions, it was perfect for us. Would recommend this diner without a doubt .

Great atmosphere!

By justinehresman |

The food here is typical diner food, no complaints. The atmosphere is great, takes you back to the 50s/60s. It is a remodeled building and I guess this restaurant opened in the 90s. Nevertheless, we loved eating here.

Mel's diner

By Martha D |

Although the food was filling, it was very tasty and so was the vanilla milkshake. The atmosphere was great and there were nice, typical diner colours and decorations. I loved this place and it is great for any meal.

Diner Time

By Sirah2013 |

Hope that this is the Mels inside universal It was busy , and the queue was stupid. The food was better than expected. Sat outside and felt quite full once finished

Dependable, but $25 per person

By pcg123 |

When u see the sign for Mel's u just have to drive in. I always think it going to be better than it is for what they charge, but it's just standard diner food. Eggs, bacon, juice, coffee, $26 with tip.

Historic visit

By cancan449 |

We returned to this iconic restaurant in hopes to recreate a good memory. It was disappointing. The food, while not bad, was nothing special. The service was good. We only had two burgers, a bowl of soup and an appetizer. Our Bill was $50.00 for lunch!

Girls holiday

By Susan B |

It was quirky and set in the 50's the surroundings were really interesting to look at. The food was tasty and prices were reasonable and portion sizes were large . Best pumpkin pie ever.

Classic Diner in Hollywood

By Dan F |

At 3AM you'll have to wait for a table but it's worth it. Classic scene of passed out diners but an eclectic crowd nonetheless. Every possible breakfast dish you can come up with will be served and it is soooo good when you've been partying all night. You have to experience it to believe it!

Old school charm

By Kevin M |

This place still has it's old school charm of a diner that's here years. The breakfast portions are massive. Great choice for a good breakfast in Hollywood. It's just off Hollywood Bvld near the Chinese Theatre

Rather good!

By queenofhearts7 |

While at Universal Hollywood we stopped here for lunch and it was rather good. Cheese burger, fries and milk shakes, yum. Giving this place a 4* only because I watched the food expeditor leave our burgers sit at the pass while he visited.

Oh dear... don’t believe the pictures.

By LocalizerUK |

Busy day in a quiet Universal Studios. Lunch stop ... tried Mel’s Diner. Went I. For a cheeseburger, got seduced by the images of a chilli dog. Well, what a disappointment.... less than a spoon of chilli, all so cold that the cheese never stood a chance of melting... the dog was rubbery. Anyway - that’s me put off the idea of a hot dog for this short life.... two bites (the second only because my brain refused to believe my mouth after the first) and the rest went Into the bin...... can’t mess up a Diet Coke -I poured it myself - so we took that with us. Very disappointing, food wasn’t quite cold, it it certainly wasn’t anywhere near hot. Unlikely to return.... the displayed pictures are clearly posed by food models and don’t bear any relation to what will arrive. Staff were anonymous .... neither good not bad... but could have been served by robots.

The Original!

By Rick A |

Stumbled on Mel;'s by accident while looking for something to eat. Ordered magnficient hamburgers and a superb oreo shake. Super friendly and helpful staff. Free parking in front Definitely recommendedn for that original American diner experience!

Love this diner!

By Bkaymc |

I ate here about 10 years ago, and the only thing that has changed is the staff...I think. They were really busy. Yasmin was my server, and she was very friendly. I expected a long wait, but it seemed like less than 5mins. I ate breakfast w/ breakfast potatoes. The eggs were delicious, but the breakfast potatoes were just so-so; they tasted like they had been under a warmer for several hours. It's a throwback to the 50s and they do a good job w/ the décor and music. I'll go back the next time I'm in the area.

Not knowing the area we were searching for a decent breakfast place, and this certainly fits the bill. Reasonably priced, good food.

Great Memorabilia and good American Food

By mzurisana |

We enjoyed our meal in this restaurant and were pleased to be able to park in the car park right next to it. When you get your car park ticket, remember to get them to stamp it before you leave Mel's - it makes the parking much cheaper. We parked, had a good value meal at Mel's, where the service was quick and food delivered to your table by the kitchen staff, then went off for a look around Hollywood before going back to the car. Because we had our ticket stamped, the car park fee was cheap - a real bonus in Hollywood!

Diners, dives and drive ins

Glad we dined there, service was good and good as you would want at home-good size serves - great location

Not that great

By Silvana2867 |

Well what can I say ... Went for lunch and was excited about getting a hot dog and when it arrived it was drowned in cheese! And was a kransky! It was awful ! Never again !!!! My husband had the hamburger and he enjoyed it .. May be I chose the wrong thing !

Vacation with friends

By Wayne1833 |

If this was themed after the late 70's show there was no evidence of it. We pairs $33 for a lunch for two. Pricing is over the top and the food is just average. Seating is very limited and cramped. You do not get refills on the 3.70 drink that is not included with the meal. Would not make a point to eat here again.

Classic taste of an all-American diner!

By Dr_Engineer_Adelaide |

Great spot for food, with an ambience of yesteryear. It's a traditional 50s-themed American diner, with a decent selection of food that's okay quality too. Service is good, and it's definitely an enjoyable experience. They're also open really late too, until 1am, so if you're a party animal, this is a great spot to get some late night meals!

Poor service

By christina_in_wny |

I was excited to eat here, but our experience was disappointing. We travel a lot and I am not hard to please and rarely leave negative reviews. This was the worst service I’ve had at a restaurant in a long time. I don’t know if our server was new or what but he was awful. He came up to the table with waters (great!) and said something about “oh you wanted an apple juice, right?” I told him no, we hadn’t ordered anything yet. No problem yet, confusion happens. We order milkshakes and food. The food comes. The milkshakes don’t. We eat most of our food. I finally realize our milkshakes are sitting on the counter where the food comes out, melting, undelivered. We finally ask some other server walking by if we can get our milkshakes that have been sitting up there. They arrive. They should have been remade. My cherry was 6 feet under. We drink our warm, melted milkshakes. Now we’re waiting for the bill. Never saw our server again. Again, the hostess walks by and my husband asks if we can get our bill. She informs us that we just go up front to pay and they have it all on the computer, no bill needed. I guess you’re supposed to know that via telepathy. Wish we had just gone to Johnny Rocket’s across the street.

STOP...here for a great meal!

By JoeDaReviewNut |

Had the grilled chicken entree and it was so incredibly delicious I gave them a clean plate in return. It is so nice while traveling to actually find a decent healthy and perfect meal. Especially for a diner who's monikers are usually greasy spoons but definitely not here. Clean sanitary and in business for a reason for all these years and many more to come based on what I experienced. Everything from the location to the history plus the incredible food and service was beyond 5 stars. Needless to say I would be a weekly repeat customer if I lived closer. Thank you to the entire staff for the excellent service atmosphere and perfect dining experience.

Just like TV

By 110Mckiwi |

If you grew up in the Southern Hemisphere on Happy Days then Mel's Diner seems just as good a diner as any to get the American experience. Food is homely (great summer salad) and make sure to take some quarters so as to pick your favourite juke box songs from your booth.

The food is average

By lous732 |

The food is average at Mel's diner. The prices are high for this type of restaurant. If I am going to spend forty dollars for two people I expect the food to be a little bit tastier.

Best burgers I’ve ever tasted

By Sabzn |

I had the three burger sliders and it was just amazing. A must try for burger lovers. Love the ambience and cool photos. This place is a true hidden gem! Do yourself a favor and eat here! You won’t regret.
