San Francisco's Home of Swine Dining

By J Pick |

I'd been away too long. Years since I sat dazzled in a red checker table clothed shrine to swine. Are there a lot of restaurants in San Francisco? Sure. There is only one Memphis Minnie's. Slide to the left and read the menu as you wait to order the best BBQ in the city. If you're new, tell them. They can guide you through the menu and help you order. I like to order one of each rib and a side for a nice sized lunch. No need to order big the first time since you can just order more when you're done. Side note, the owner is a huge Widespread fan and he has ties to Fox Brothers BBQ in Atlanta.

Probably the best BBQ in California

By cdab |

I love BBQ and seek it out in everyplace I visit. Last time in San Francisco I discovered Memphis Minnies and thought it some of the best BBQ I have ever had. Last week I was in San Francisco again and one of the first places on my list was Memphis Minnies. I was not disappointed the food was excellent with beautiful pork and spicy sausage together with two sides. Great food great beer and great music. So six months on it still is my number one just as good as the first visit.

Great Barbecue

By righteous |

Funky little place with excellent food. Just like being down south, comfort food, 18 hour aged beef brisket is awesome. Not for the gourmet, tiny portion, stuffy classical music pinky pointing types. It is a fun place with a fun atmosphere, slightly loud good music. They are proud of the food with good reason. Small dining area with group seating, so you will probably be next to other people. We really enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and people. Found it by word of mouth. Very lively neighborhood.

A slice of the South

By toddbP9048WO |

Everything there is so over the top. Plus the few tap beers you have are great. Wanna try some sakes they offer could be a new tradition in eating and drinking southern cuisine . My favorite is the Minnie's tasting platter you may take some home for another meal or snack later because of the huge portions. All the sides are awesome also. Been going there for years

Always a winner

Been going here for many years never had a bad meal ever. Quaint little southern joint in the lower haight- ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco. Everything is awesome to eat especially the scratch made pies. TAke some sauce home.

Dude serves sake with BBQ...just cause it 'goes'...love it.

Good Flavours in the meat

By carlyanesanelis |

Visited here with a friend who lives in the city and it was great to try something a bit more authentic. I plumped for the smoked chicken which was tasty but some of the sides didn't have a lot of the flavour. I was assured that the red meat options were equally as tasty as I don't eat red meat.

Great Barbeque

By Consideringthis |

This is the stuff of movies. Fabulous smokey flavours, lots of depth and amazing sides. I ate here three times in the space of three weeks and every time was terrific. A good food and a beer for under $20 a head.

Great place, still not convinced I've tried the best BBQ though.

No doubt about it I loved this place. We are over from England on honeymoon and being an avid fan of Man v Food I was desperate to try BBQ whilst over in the states. I know San Fran probably isn't the best place for it but trip advisor guided me here! I ordered the Minnie's taster where you can choose 3 meats and 2 sides (for us to share). I'd been dying to try brisket (never had it), ribs and pulled pork in the states so that's what I went for! For sides I got mac and cheese and tangy slaw. You also got a corn muffin (cornbread?) on the side. Mac and cheese and slaw was brilliant and I loved the corn bread. Pulled pork in all honesty was pretty average, brisket tasted really good but a little dry and the ribs were not fall off the bone. They were tasty but you kinda had to chew them off the bone. I love my condiments and was in heaven as they have 4 bottles of sauce in your table which were all great. The meat in all honesty was all a little dry so the sauces were very welcome. Maybe I was expecting too much from BBQ (although I know from man v food that some juicy brisket and melt in the mouth ribs must exist?!) but as the title suggests maybe I'm destined not to have the best BBQ on this trip. I feel I'm coming across a bit harsh as I really loved it and gave it 4 stars quite rightly. Lovely service and decor too.

Good BBQ in San Francisco

By Sean P |

I tried the BBQ here and it was nice and slow cooked. The meat fell off the bone and had that great slow cooked flavor. I never thouht I'd find good BBQ in San Francisco, so this was a real find!

Best BBQ I had in California

By Florian R |

I was in a quest for the best BBQ on my trip around California and I think I found it. Their brisket is perfect, I must have had a pound of it. We also had the sausage and the ribs, and it was delicious too. The staff of friendly and ready to help with any question. The place itself is nice and doesn't seem pretentious, that's a big plus in San Francisco. It may seem a little expensive but you really get what you pay for. I strongly recommend for any meat lover.

Tasty!

Had never been to a bbq restaurant before and was determined to try it while in SF. We got the bus from our hotel which was rather a chore but we managed it! Now...the review..the restaurant is a busy area and I thought rather run down, it was, in the 60s THE place to be! Without being unkind, I was rather shocked at the inside, very basic. We sat down and looked at the menu. We then realised we had to go to the counter to order and pay. they then call your name when the order is ready and you go to the counter to collect. Not having had bbq in usa before, I decided to have a 'minnie's taster' you choose three meats, I chose, beef ribs, smoked sausage and chicken. My son had smoked sausage, you then choose two side orders. I had sweet potato and smoked beans and my son had mac and cheese and and potato salad. We both had corn bread muffin which was to die for. The meat was so tasty, of course we realised that there was far too much of it but ploughed on regardless. On the table are huge bottles of sauces. I loved the Texas red sauce and I bought a bottle to bring home, also on the table are huge rolls of kitchen roll, which you will need. It was quite busy there (we were there about 2pm) and if you can look past the rather scruffy surroundings and concentrate on the food you will be in for a treat! The 2 meals and 2 Fanta came to $45 absolute bargain! No photo's sorry. I did use the bathroom and it is one for all, meaning, one toilet for men and women.

Last time we were in San Fran our friend took us to Memphis Minnies so when he asked where we wanted to eat on our first night back in town we asked if it was still as good. And it was. Nothing flashy about this restaurant but it has great food!! You have to try it.

Succulent Everything

By MarkasSF |

Memphis Minnie's is a one-of-a-kind barbecue in San Francisco. Not the saucy type of meats, but the slow-smoked variety. From the beef or pork ribs, to the chicken or brisket, it's all so very tasty. The sides are amazing as well. The greens, the mac and cheese, the coleslaw...wonderfully tasty. Even the desserts are good. The banana pudding is a must-try. If you don't want something smoked, they have one of the best ham/cheesburgers I have ever eaten. The pimento cheese really does make this burger. This is a walk to the counter and order, then be seated kind of place. They call your name when your order is ready, for pickup. There are a lot of pig-related decorations as well as t-shirts of barbecues from all over the country. .....and don't forget the sweet tea!

Smokyyy BBQ

By classylush |

Popped in here after a lovely day at Dolores Park. Very delicious BBQ. The staff was super nice also, very friendly. We made several trips to the counter as we loved everything we tried and had to try more! Tender and juicy meat and a fun atmosphere. The beef brisket melts in your mouth. So, so yummy. Definitely give this place a try.

Meat Heaven

By Mike the Foodie |

You like meat? Me too. You want a lot of it? Me too. This place got it? you bet. You better bring an appetite for this place, cause they have large portions that are filling and just great. I go here by myself most of the time, but its a good place to bring a group of friends as well.

Awesome!

Arrived into San Francisco from the UK with the usual jet lag so spent a couple of hours wandering around the Haight area trying to stay awake. Stopped in Memphis Minnie's for a beer and some ribs and wings. I have to say, delicious and totally hit the spot! With so much choice in this area , this place is well worth a visit.

A HITACHI MAGIC WAND FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS!!

By couponmaster |

These guys are the real deal. The best BBQ in the bay area by far. Ribs, links, chicken, tri tip, brisket, they got it all. Great sides too- fries, beans, corn muffins, mac&cheese (the best), etc. So do your mouth and tummy a favor and go eat! I recomend the sampler plate- 3 meats and 2 sides for about 20 bucks.

This BarBQue restaurant providing yummy food!!

By srevogel |

We were visiting san Francisco from England, we had planned a visit to Minnie’s while we were visiting haight. From the furthest end down by the park at ashbury it was a 15 min walk along, when we walked In We were greeted straight away and knew this was a happy relaxing place to eat, we were told how to order and then just to sit down as it was a place to just be ourselves, suffering with the time difference and long flight this was the nicest thing anyone could say to us, the food was just wonderful, that smoked taste stayed for hours, both agreeing its definitely!!! Worth the visit. And would recommend anyone that likes great meats to go and experience, especially if from somewhere like England where that food is hard to find. We would like to thank everyone there for their time and courtesy.

The meat slides right off the bone!

By Adiba M |

These are the best ribs I've had in a while, comes with sides and the highlight of the meal was definitely the sweet corn muffin.

Great Meal

By DominicParamore |

Often go to Memphis Minnie's at least a couple times a month and have for a number of years now. Love the food, meats are great and always enjoy the different sides they offer. So far my favorite is the Brisket, really is very good. My only complaint, is the service can be very slow most times. Very friendly and helpful, but just slow -- makes it seem it always takes about 30 minutes to place your order and walk out the door. I tend to do take-out mostly.

City smoker

Great smoke cookery, dry rub great. Their food holds its own .The sides put them up on top! Double barrel menu! !!

Great BBQ, easy to get to on bus, good value

By smyrnagirl |

We had visitors with us from the UK who wanted some American BBQ. We weren't sure we'd find it in the City by the Bay. I read about Memphis Minnie's in an article about the best BBQ in San Fran. They did not disappoint. It was easy to find them on Haight taking the bus. The BBQ meat was great. None of it really needed BBQ sauce, though the sauces were really good. I had the brisket, and it was as good as any I'd get in Atlanta! (Not that Atlanta is the mecca for Brisket, but they have a few good TX BBQ places here....) I'd recommend Memphis Minnie's to anyone in need of a great, meaty meal!

Great local BBQ joint

By cdab |

Located on Haight this small unassuming looking BBQ restaurant serves exceptional tasty BBQ. Visited at lunchtime and had the Southern Star sandwich with sweet potato an coleslaw as sides. Very friendly smiling server made me feel very welcome. Sandwich was crammed with tender juicy meat and sides were equally good. Loved it, definitely worth a visit and it is easy to get to just next to a number 71bus stop. Will make this a regular place to go on visits to San Francisco.

Ok place for BBQ. Not a big fan, though.

Just ok

By kmickyd |

My 16 yr old son is a lover of BBQ. Despite being In town for 34 hours I knew that I had to deliver at least 1 BBQ restaurant in the city by the bay. Restricted to those open for lunch, we ventured over to Memphis Minnie's to fill our plates and our bellies. Ordered pulled pork, brisket, wings, chili, mac and cheese, cheeseburgers and a cornbread muffin. Unfortunately, overall the food just doesn't deliver. Pulled pork and brisket was dry and lacking a depth of smoky BBQ flavor. Wings were just ok. Chili was excellent. It was chunks of brisket and very flavorful. Had it with cheese and raw onions. Cheeseburgers were also excellent. Perfectly cooked, juicy and tasty. Mac & Cheese was over peppered. My 9 yr old who like Mikey eats everything wouldn't have a second bite. Return visit..unlikely.

Great ribs in a budget environment

By Brent M |

We were in the Haight neighbourhood and looking for a place to eat. Found Memphis Minnies on TripAdvisor. Caught the #7 bus for a few blocks and found they area to be a little "scruffy" but not scary. When we walked in my first reaction was to turn around and walk out. It looked like more of a cheapy burger joint than a BBQ restaurant. A row of tables down one side, walk up to the counter and place your order on the other side, pick up your food at the end of the counter when they call your name. I was sure my wife was going to say we needed to leave and I would have had her back on the way out the door. But we stayed and I had the brisket and potato salad, she had three ribs and fries. WOW. Great food. I smoke a fair amount of food myself and consider myself a good critic of smoked food and this was great. Brisket, great; potato salad, great; ribs, great; even the fries were great. This place needs to be in a bigger better location! Or, maybe it needs to stay right where it is and continue serving the same great food in the same way. Oh wait, they don't actually serve it, they just set it on the counter and call your name. Before I left I checked out the washroom, the one that didn't say Men or Women on the door, it said PEOPLE! It was large, very large and very clean. They say Don't Judge a Book By The Cover and this place is the perfect example of that.

Great place to get barbecue

Memphis Minnie's is a very good place to get barbecue. It is very casual but also a good value. The side dishes are excellent.

Damn Tasty for West Coast BBQ

By P K |

I love BBQ and Memphis Minnie's didn't disappoint. We went with the 3 meat platter, with two sides. Two of us feasted on brisket, ribs and chorizo with mac n' cheese and collards as our sides. The meat was tender inside with a delicate char on the outside. Infused with distinct --but not overpowering-- smokiness, this was what I needed to satisfy my BBQ jones. The collards are unique, perhaps not for everyone since they bend more to the sweet side of things vs. the meaty/porky flavour I'm more familiar with. The Sweet Potato Pie was a great finish.

Delicious, smoky, succulent BBQ

By FoodAficianado |

Who would think San Francisco would have BBQ, much less GREAT BBQ at Memphis Minnie's? Try the beef brisket, which is smoked with a generous layer of fat, and it simply melts in your mouth. The Mac and cheese is creamy and cheesy, obviously made from scratch. The collards were a little too vinegary for my taste, but I will definitely go back. Next time I'll try the smoked fried chicken. Who would have thought?

Way overpriced for poor quality food

By FERJDR |

We can say we tried Memphis Minnie's and can also say NEVER AGAIN! We ordered for delivery and it came extremely fast which was concerning since we're in the Mission and that place is in the Haight. With that said, the food should have been steaming hot. However, the food was not even marginally warm. Fries limp. The tepid brisket AND bread (half-assed roll) were dry. The cole slaw was a mix of 'I don't know what'. Mac and cheese was only 1/2 in the container; the rest was all over the bag; cold; totally void of any flavor. So-called sweet potato pie was disgusting; cannot even begin to describe the taste of the crust and the filling was slimy as if it had been made with vaseline. The only thing that was minimally edible was the yellow mustardy sauce. For what the meals cost, it was beyond disappointing and possibly one of the top 5 worst meals I've ever had, and that includes my mother's cooking.

Down home barbecue

By Jimmie N |

This is a rather small restaurant. You order at the counter and pick a table. The lady at the counter was cheerful and friendly. I had the brisket which was very tender and tasty. They cook the meats dry but offer several bbq sauces at the table. I had Texas Red sauce. The sides were delicious especially the potlicker greens. As a southerner I was happy that they have sweet tea which is rare in San Francisco. I will return.

BBQ in SFO

By Warren H |

Went here based on Trip Advisor reviews. Had the brisket, ribs and fried cheese grit sticks. Place was as described; a bit on the divey side but clean enough. The homemade sauces are nice, SC mustard was my favorite. TX red a close second. Good beer on tap and music had that bluesy vibe you'd expect from a self-proclaimed BBQ joint. I have to say that the main point, the brisket and ribs, were only average (brisket a tad on the dry side). Reviews had us excited for a really good BBQ. our experience was nothing great.

Delicious brisket and pulled pork sandwiches!

By CWSJ |

My boyfriend were geocaching and stopped in for lunch, after finding the nearby geocache. I had the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and he had the brisket sandwich with beans. Everything was delicious! Pulled pork and brisket were tender and tasty. The slaw is vinegar based (slightly sweet and tangy), with cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, onions. The staff are friendly, and our lunches were served up quickly. We will definitely come back.

AMAZING BBQ

By arlosmom |

Good God. AMAZING collards. The BBQ andouille sausage is to die for. Mac and cheese to clog your arteries... We're going back next month. I am dying to try the Maxi burger with pimento cheese and house-cured bacon. This place ain't the cheapest but it is totally worth every penny.

Yuuumm ribs!

By Sandals246 |

Tender juicy ribs, use the hot sauce that is on the table for a scrumptious feed. Add the fresh slaw, and fries,...heaven!

Greasy and fatty

By Scott |

Unimpressed. Ribs were fatty and greasy. I'd say four out of the six were edible. For the first time in history, I did not finish the ribs. The fries were good, but they were not fantastic. I won't be back.

Worth the wait

By Mr_Firestone |

The line was to the door on a misty cold night in San Fran, but the excellent BBQ and cold beer made the wait worthwhile. They were out of Tri-tip (I'll just have to go back) so I went with the chicken and pork with a side of slaw and beans. The meats were cooked perfectly with plenty of flavor, tender and juicy. The sides were perfect as well. It is a pseudo self-service type of place. You order your food and pay. Then you go sit at any table you can find while you wait for your name to be called so you can go get your food. If you're in to BBQ, this is a must-stop-by kind of place especially if you're in the neighborhood.

Delivery review

By Alan D |

It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Memphis Minnie’s in person. This time I ordered delivery. Food was good. I got the rib tips which came in a large potion with your choice of sides, and corn bread. The meat had a great smoke flavor and was tender. The rib tips have bones, so if that’s not your thing order something else. These sides were good and the cornbread was hot. It came with a few sides of bbq sauce. The sauce was a bit on the vinegar side. I also tried the banana pudding. Omg it was amazing. Very traditional, not fancy, and a large potion. If you like vanilla pudding and fresh banana then I would recommend it. Only con was the box the food came in looked like it and felt like it was rubbed in sauce, multiple cooks wiped their hands on it, and was dipped in a vat of oil. The entire outside of box was filthy! Maybe they could pack it with clean hands and wipe the counter off.

Disappointing

By Cheesy30 |

The staff here are full of beans, there's good music playing and they are very friendly, unfortunately, the food was inconsistent, I think you need to know what to order to have a good experience. The smoked brisket was delicious, however the sausage and pulled pork not so great, the mac and cheese was also underwhelming, wish it had been great, as the venue was really quirky.

Bad a$$ barbecue

By Chrisandstef |

This place is legit. You've just got to trust that San Francisco has a great BBQ joint. I got the 2 meat combo with smoked chicken and pulled pork, and got sweet potatoes and greens. My husband got 3 meat combo with pulled pork, andouille sausage and brisket with BBQ fries and coke slaw. It was all amazing and smoked perfectly. They had BOTH traditional north and South Carolina sauces and a sweet ketchup based sauce too that was fantastic! Great food and great people. Also it's across the street from an amazing tattoo shop. You won't be sorry you went!

Massive portions, very tasty

By Martin V |

Laid back counter ordering place with diner-esque decor. The portions are really big. We had the two meat combo with two sides. Wasn't convinced by the cornbread it came with, tastes like cake! Highly recommend the beef brisket, fried chicken could be a little more seasoned but all in all worth a visit!

Glad I got here before I die

By Eugenieweg |

This was the best brisket BarBQ I've ever had. No sauce, just smokey flavor and perfect spicing. The greens were smokey and not greasy. The pecan pie was juicier than many and not overly sweet. Happily we had enough leftovers for brkfst. I'd have taken them home on the plane but knew we'd be attacked for the smell alone if I did. I know what my 1st meal will be on my next trip to S.F.

tenderness and taste-o-meter off the dial

By Aussnowboarder |

Anyone who's had texan bbq from Austin knows that is the pinnacle. Well Memphis Minnies was the closest I have tasted so far. Had a texan beef rib and some brisket. I have high expectations when it comes to food. This beef rib was ultra tasty and tender. Often only pork ribs have this level of tenderness and I was not going to order the beef but the attendant showed me the beef and I could see it was going to be tender. Every piece of brisket I have had in America outside of Austin has been either too tough or too fatty except for Memphis Minnie's. I praise them for getting this so right. I have sampled the other top 3 BBQ places in SF on yelp and they do not come close to Memphis Minnie's. To be sure I did not just catch them on a good day, I am going back to sample other parts of the menu

Epic intro to American barbecue

By Michelle O |

This was our introduction to American barbecue. We were taken there on a drunken night out and it was amazing! We walked out of there wondering where this food has been all our lives. We had the pulled pork, brisket, sweet potato pie and fried peach pie. They were all fantastic but the brisket and sweet potato pie were outstanding. Could not have walked out any fuller or happier :)

BBQ heaven

By tvainio |

Place was recommended by a friend and we are living >5000mi away but it was worth it. My favourite is brisket and here it's properly done. It's hard to find a joint which makes it better. Even my wife who is not meat fan really enjoyed their pulled spicy chicken.

Great BBQ in San Francisco

By amhurstguy |

Silly as it may seem, it's difficult to find good BBQ anywhere these days, let alone the bay area. Every now and then I get a craving for BBQ and so I did a Google search, "best BBQ in San Francisco", Memphis Minnie came up. My partner and I reviewed the menu online and decided to give it a whirl. So glad we did! The place had the earthiness you'd expect of a BBQ joint, the menu selection was great, fast service and the food was pretty amazing. I had ribs, my partner had brisket. My ribs were so tender and meaty....I was in HEAVEN. The brisket was equally tender and juicy. Not only will I return, I plan on taking some home.

Good Fried Chicken

By OneFJS |

I had the fried chicken special on a Saturday and it was excellent. I loved the batter and the seasonings. Sweet potatoes and mac & cheese were average. Cornbread not too bad. I would compare the menu options to chain Famous Dave's, but more of a down home feel. One thing that was a bother: I had to request chicken breasts twice, the first two times they delivered a thigh.

Fried chicken sandwich is a life changer!

Some friends took us for the first time last week. Holy crap! That fried chicken sandwich literally made my whole week better. And Manny...what can I say? I was smitten. So nice and so friendly. Thanks for the bacon brittle. We will be back!

Texas it ain't but not bad either

By Walpy |

The diner-type atmosphere feels right and the service at the counter is efficient enough. The food was palatable if not memorable, I got the distinct feeling that there's plenty cooked ahead of time and then artfully reheated. Complaints - this makes the brisket at least on the dry side; they only have three sauces and none of them that hot, while the sandwich bread is pure CA health store issue. Positives - the price, the quality of the meat itself, the blues on the sound system, the mac and cheese, decent draft beer. Good place to eat alone if you're stuck.

Great BBQ, not so good service

By Jeffrey Z |

Always my go to BBQ place in the city...after the original owners death, the food seems to have stayed on course, although the service not so much. Long wait to pick up the food; twice what we were told. Only one person working hard and he was imbibing....and got our order wrong. And they were clearly privileging the food delivery types. BUT...the food is great and worth going there to eat.

Best BBQ West of the Mississippi

By Ron1812 |

Best BBQ West of the Mississippi. We go to San Francisco about 4 times a year and finally checked out Memphis Mini and happy we did because every trip we now get both Beef and Pork BBQ. I have tasted good BBQ in many cities and this is as good as the best. Ron

Barbecue in SF, YES

By Bruce O |

Memphis Minnie's nails it when it comes to BBQ. The food selection is very wide and it's all good. Warning to first timers, it can get busy (justifiably so) and the decor is (paper towel napkins) can set you foodenistas back a step, but deal with it and have at least the ribs, brisket and chicken. Wednesday I believe is still Pastrami day and this really is special. And the thrill of eating on checkerboard vinyl tableclothes and the wall decorations just enhances the experience. I knew someone who took out from there almost every day they were open (wonder if they had a recent cholesterol check?). Parking the the lower Haight is always problematic, but once you leave patting your belly who cares.

Great BBQ

By Megan H |

I live in SF and frequent Minnie's regularly. Everything is good, including the staple menu, and there are rotating specials all week. I even bought a jar of sauce, it is THAT good! Sweet tea is also a must, and the place feels like your typical BBQ restaurant - nothing fancy like a lot of the other "upscale" BBQ places around the city. Can not recommend enough.

Yummy!

By the_kelly_g |

My parents were a little reluctant going here because the first time they went it was really busy and the food was very dry. However I convinced them to give it another try and it was amazing! The brisket was so tender I didn't need a knife, the mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and beans were so flavorful and the peach pie melted in your mouth. We were all so happy and so full afterwards. I will come back here again as my as possible!!!!!

Delicious and finger lickin' good!

Amazing to find this here

By Porcophile |

I'm from North Carolina, originally from Tennessee, and I have a daughter in Austin, Texas. I've eaten barbecue for a long time, in a great many classic -- i.e., Southern -- places. I was amazed to find authentic wood-cooked barbecue in downtown San Francisco: Far too many places downhome have given up and switched to gas, but Bob Kantor cuts no corners. Even his side dishes are terrific. How he does such good greens without any meat in them is beyond me, but those and his mac and cheese and his sweet potato and pecan pies (all made in the place) give vegetarians something to eat while their friends chow down on absolutely first-rate brisket and ribs. Vince Staten, author of the book Real Barbecue, says this is the best barbecue in the state, but I think that's too modest a claim: It''s probably the best west of Texas. San Franciscans should count themselves lucky to have it right there on Haight Street.

Best BBQ around. I had the slow cooked texas beef brisket - it was so good, recalling it now brings a tear to my eye. The mac n cheese and sweet potatoes were also delicious. WOW. These are some serious eats. They also had beer on tap which was cool. The staff was distracted, and not very friendly, but the guy behind the register did recommend the beef brisket and it was amazing, so at least he knew his stuff!

A meaty slice of BBQ heaven

By canman66 |

The first thing I look for in a BBQ spot is brisket. How they handle brisket tells me everything I need to know about a pit master's skill. The brisket here is some of the best I've ever had. I will dream of it for a long time indeed. My partner had the pulled pork and was also quite impressed. Love this place. Love its food. Definitely recommend this to serious BBQheads.

The restaurant was open with the door wide open. We stood for a couple of minutes but no waiters came to us, so we asked to a girl of the kitchen if we could sit. We waited at the table for more than 10 minutes but nobody came, so we moved to another restaurant. Perhaps the food was good but that was an awful service. If maybe you want to close and go home, just change the sign from open to close.

Memphis Minnie's: Best BBQ in San Francisco

By alicestader |

Memphis Minnie's is by far the best BBQ in San Francisco. The unassuming joint in the lower Haight serves up the tastiest brisket, tri-tip, ribs and other fine BBQ treats in the city. Everything at Memphis Minnie's is slow smoked Southern style, no gas or electric here. All the meats are smoked at least 4 hours (some up to 18 hours) over white oak logs, lending it the authentic taste that Memphis Minnie's is known for. Memphis Minnie's is usually busy all day, which is a testament to how delicious it's smoked meats really are; however, the food comes out hot and fast. They are known for their Slow Cooked Texas Beef Brisket but the menu also has an assortment of fine dishes if you aren't a fan of traditional brisket. Popular main dishes are the: St. Louis Style Pork Ribs, Santa Maria Tri-Tip Steak Plate, Smoked Chicken Plate and the Two Way Combo (any two meats) for those who can't make decisions. The Smokehouse Sandwiches are also an excellent choice for lunch or dinner for those with a smaller appetite. Memphis Minnie's is plain delicious. The meats are smoked to perfection, the sides are super tasty and they even have creative desserts like the Smoked Pecan Bacon Brittle. Yum! Next time you are looking for BBQ in the city, hit up Memphis Minnie's and you won't be disappointed.

Good barbecue, good price

Kind of a "fast food" place, though not exactly that. Tasty food (though a bit greasy), well cooked. Good service.

Very Good BBQ

Amazing barbecue

Went here together with my bf just after running the Bay-to-breakers in SFO. Had the sweet smoked pork in a sandwich and it was amazing! There was a really nice guy working in the restaurant who looked after the gurst to make sure we all had everything we needed. We first took a table just outside the restroom but he asked us if we wanted to have a table closer to the window. We really enjoyed the food and tve staff and will go back if we get the chance!

I was a little sketicpal about barbeque in San Francisco and I was very pleasently surprised. The meat was nice and slow cooked and was yummy. Great find!

Amazingly great BBQ with great atmosphere

By Eugene C |

Glad we chose this place over another close by BBQ joint. We had a Minnie Taster plate with fried chicken, pork and beef brisket, onion rings, Mac and cheese, and a few sides, washed down with a pitcher of local IPA and a few lemonades for the kids. Great selection of sauces, nice friendly atmosphere. Very well priced and close to the N Judah line to make for an easy ride home.

Fantastic BBQ

By mcbear1 |

It was SO GOOD. The meat, the sides, the sauces, the amazing pecan pie. We got there early and we were the only eat-in customers, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this place!

What a great place to eat - is a shame that we cannot get anything like this in England, it would be hugely popular. I had the texas smoked brisket sandwich and the wife had the pulled pork. Amazing authenticate smoked meats which you could see the guys making in the kitchen. Would highly recommend this to anyone!!

Great BBQ! Fun restaurant.

I came here twice during my stay in the Lower Haight area, that's how good it was. The cajun sausage sandwich was fantastic, and the mac & cheese very creamy. Recommended.

Our First Taste of San Francisco Food and ‘what a start’

By P44cka |

The restaurant is a hidden gem, on the outside you would put give it a second glance, but inside, it’s friendly and welcoming and being a tourist the customer service was superb, careful to ensure we chose the best offer. We were not let down, get experience, great food and superb service.

Back for more of their Tri-tip

By Mr_Firestone |

When I'm in the area I just have to stop in. It has been a while since I was in San Fran and it just happened that I was in the area. So I stopped in and as I said in my last review, it was worth the wait. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60713-d349417-r127959822-Memphis_Minnie_s-San_Francisco_California.html#REVIEWS I had the tri-tip this time and it was just perfectly done, medium to medium rare, full of flavor and juicy. You just can't go wrong here unless you get there to late and all the good food is gone. Never trust a skinny chef!

Expected so much more

By M M |

Came here for late lunch/early dinner, staff were so unhelpful and the waitress with blue hair looked bored and unfriendly. Ordered a slab of ribs (to share with my boyfriend) and 2 sides (potato salad and sweet potato). I think you're better off getting 2 medium sides separately because the 2 they give you for an additional $6 with your meal is tiny! Food came hot and fast, the sauces on the table are decent - nothing special. The food overall was good not great. We were expecting a lot better because the reviews are excellent but honestly, I wouldn't bother. Side note - area didn't seem very safe so be careful with belongings and where you park your car.

Don't miss it!

The real american bbq experience in San Francisco. Loads of meat, fast and efficient service. Don't expect anything fancy or lovely in here!

So good. A hidden gem.

By Amanda H |

We stumbled into this small restaurant not expecting a whole lot but, man, did they deliver. I had the Tuesday special — a bacon sandwich prepared in the spirit of a banh mi. Spot on delicious. My fellow diners split a tasting platter and were silent pretty much the whole meal savoring the brisket. And pulled pork. The Mac cheese and corn muffin were also amazing. Don’t give it a second thought. Just go.

Servers were helpful for our takeout order. Portions are large! Highly recommend the brisket and the tri-tip steak. Wonderful flavor. Highly recommend.

It's barbecue at its best!

Great barbecue without all the grease. Sauce on the side the way it should be. Side dishes straight out of the South, and good! Wednesday's pasrtrami barbecue is really worth a trip

Simple casual spot serving delicious barbecue platters. Beers are good too. Walking distance from Haight-Ashbury.

The best ribs I have ever eaten. Just amazing taste! I you will come to San Francisco, visiting this place is a must! The best served pork all over the world.

Disappointed

By Linda P |

we chose this place after reading the reviews online. The place is not very nice, and you do not get waited on. you order at the counter, then they call your name to come pick up the food when it is ready. there are only a few tables inside and they are not cleaned up as soon as they should be. having said all of that, the food was decent, and the corn bread muffin was excellent

Smoked Heaven

By GaryTours |

I'm from Texas so I have had some of the best bbq in the U.S. including Franklin's in Austin. I've tried a lot of bbq places in the Bay area. Memphis Minnie's is the best hands down. I'm a brisket person but I also have enjoyed their pulled pork, ribs, rib tips and chicken. Their beans are stellar too. Great pecan pie. A lot of places call themselves bbq joints and with great hope I try them only to be disappointed and never return.

Best BBQ in SF

The food is so good!!! Their brisket melted on my tongue like a magic trick and the sides were off the chain. That cornbread! Don't miss it on your next trip to San Francisco!

Looked Delicious...

By BB T. |

Ever been taken to a restaurant filled with delicious scents and mouthwatering food you couldn't eat? All around me were folks chowing down on BBQ while I ate potato salad and cornbread. Both were excellent, by the way. My husband and son cleaned their plates. The next time my husband's feeling under the weather, I plan to give him potato salad and cornbread while I chow down on amazing BBQ!

You won't be sorry.

By 52761 |

Second time at Minnie's. Had the brisket both times. I am from the midwest, we know how to Q and how to smoke. This is very good. Worth the wait. Sides are good too. Last time took extra brisket sandwich on the plane home. Smelled soooo good. Drove me nuts.

Amazing, genuine BBQ

By TurboNick |

Visited Minnie's having found it recommended online. I went with a friend who was dying for some good ribs. We got the ribs and much else besides. It's a really genuine-feeling place where you order at the counter and then fight for a seat. My friend had ribs, which were amazing and big enough that he could spare one for me. I went half and half fried chicken and pulled pork, and both were really good (although the ribs were better). Portions were enormous and we both struggled with the sides. Sweet potato was just boiled sweet potato (I had expected it to be fried), but potato salad was excellent (and a welcome contrast from all the hot, fatty food), and beans were very good. They also have some very good beers on tap. Overall, a great experience.

Unbelievable

By Jim M |

This is without a doubt the best bbq I have tasted. I stopped in with my family during a street fair. Just looking for something quick. The food came out fast and was amazing. We wound up staying for a couple hours drinking beer and eating great BBQ. Highly recommended!!!

Fantastic food!

I brought my dad here whilst on vacation as he loves American bbq. He said this was by far his favourite not just in San Fran but across states, would highly recommend and the staff are super friendly and nice. Good atmosphere and can smell the pit when cooking

Family BB-Q Night

By SFkix |

Family of four out for dinner, got there early, order first and then sit down. Place is small, so when it is busy you could be waiting for a table. Lots to look at on the walls and drawings of pigs on the tables. Ordered a rack of ribs, rib tips, chicken wings and a few sides. I'd skip the rib tips next time, very dry. The ribs were okay, but the delicious sauces they have on the tables helped a lot. I mixed the Texas Red and the Stupid Hot. The wings were really good, sweet and tangy. The side of beans and collard greens - YUM! Fun place for BB-Q, I'd go back just to try a few different items like their smoked fried chicken or their pulled sandwiches. The meats you can order by fractions of pounds, add sides to make them into plates or order them in a sandwich. They sell beer.

If you love barbecue, you'll love Minnie's

By gore1111jp |

I never thought of San Francisco as a place known for classic barbecue. Seafood? Yes! Fine dining? Of course! But barbecue? That's to be found in Texas, or St. Louis, or Kansas City. So, when my husband told me that he wanted to try Memphis Minnie's I was skeptical. I am SO glad we did. We had the tastiest meal of smoked brisket, smoked shredded pork, and tritip served with smoky beans, Cole slaw, tangy collard greens, and potato salad. We've been to great barbecue places in the aforementioned places, and Minnie's can easily stand tall with the best of them. Plus, the staff was so friendly and helpful, pointing out things we might enjoy based on what our preferences were. I ate so much I was a little afraid that I'd be "digestively" sorry later (I have a sensitive system and gluten sensitive). Not even, much to my delight! I will definitely go back to Minnie's the next time we visit San Francisco. Their smoked meats are just plain awesome.

Ribs that made me so very happy

By John Brown |

Having arrived from London and dropped off my bags at my humble apartment for the week I was in the mood for some good hearty fuss free food. My did Minnie's deliver. I had the ribs and fried chicken combo and it was outstanding. Ribs were thick st.louis style and meltingly delicious. Chicken was beautifully tender with a delightfully crispy coating. All served with some slaw and an indulgent Mac and cheese. I washed this down with some ruby ale and my night was done. I slept with a smile.

It's a dive, but it got soul!

By Victor S |

This is BBQ for real! "Olivia" the big smoker running on white oak logs does the heavy-lifting in the joint, producing 18-hour smoked brisket and lots of other yumminess. The staff is friendly and prompt. We did take out twice in a one-week vacation, just because the food was soooo good. Don't plan eating on premises, as a sit-down meal. The place is meant for take-out or for a quick pitstop in a busy greasy-spoon. All that being said, we loved the "San Francisco home of swine dinning" !

Good BBQ

By Lisa60653 |

The ribs were fall off the bone, tender and tasty. They offer some sauces on the table but you really didn't need it. We tried just to see but we enjoyed the meat without anything extra. The children loved the mac and cheese. The food was really good. Portion are a little skimpy for the cost, but the food was very tasty. We would have loved to have tried some of the desserts that they had listed but they were out of everything. They show pictures of pecan pies and large chocolate chip cookies, but again it was disappointing that they were completley out at lunch time.

Good grub from friendly staff- delicious

By Charlotte T |

Really friendly helpful staff allowed us to try before buying as this food is new to us. Delicious pork and brisket sandwiches. This is casual counter style dining but all the more fun because of that. We hopped on the Muni from downtown Golden Gate Park and it stops almost right outside

Place to meet the meat

No table service. See the menu, order off the menu and get food when name called. Mid range in price. Under 15 will get you a sandwich with a small side. The food is defiantly better than the price. Funky environment with good music playing.

Good Barbeque...

By Michael G |

It’s worth the wait. My favorite is the andouille sausage links. I pour on the extra sauce for added flavor. Also good is the brisket, but sometimes, the chicken can be a little dry.

It's a temple if you like bbq food. Nice smoked ribs, tasty fries, sweet potatos, cookies...even the salad was pretty good for a bbq place.

Great BBQ in the lower Haight

By alansoff@comcast.net |

Memphis Minnie's does a great job with dry rubbed BBQ. Their meats are slow roasted in a wood fired oven and have a wonderful smoky flavor that goes perfectly with the rubs they apply. The only thing better than the pork ribs is the pastrami sandwiches they make only on Wednesdays. The side dishes are all good. I like the vinegar based slaw, and the tangy greens. The ambiance is strictly BBQ joint. You order at the counter and pickup when your name is called. You eat at picnic tables with rolls of paper towels and bottles of homemade sauces. Bring your appetite.

Fabulous BBQ

By Michael F |

Memphis Minnie's is a BBQ "Joint" (they would approve use of the word, I'm sure). I am a big fan of their beef ribs which are usually done to perfection. Minnie's barbecues them (smoking them) slowly so if they haven't gotten them early, you can't get them that day -- and the supply of beef ribs is not as reliable as I would wish. But if they don't have beef ribs, the various forms of pork ribs are wonderful, as is the Wednesday pastrami (available on Wednesday only). The ribs are smoked dry -- without sauce, and if you believe that BBQ means sauce, you just haven't tasted Minnie's ribs -- they are wonderful without sauce - and I sometimes eat them this way. However, on the table are bottles of four made-at-Minnies BBQ sauces: South Carolina Mustard, North Carolina Vinegar, Texas Red Sauce, and Bee Izabob's Breath Spicy Hot Sauce. Texas Red and South Carolina Mustard are my favorites. The rib plates come with your choice of 2 sides and a corn muffin (southern style definitely and delicious). Sides include fries (thin and flavorful), greens (so this can be health food), beans (not from a can), mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and several others I think. My friend and I usually order two plates and thus have four sides between us ... and they are plenty big to share. And they have onion strings which you can order a la carte or as a substitute for the two sides (or at least they let us do that when we asked). The food is all delicious. It is usually big enough that I eat some for lunch and have a nice lite supper on the remains afterwards. That is, when the flavor doesn't make me forget to stop when I'm no longer hungry. They have traditional soda drinks (refillable from a machine) and sweet tea that should be illegal as it is so addictive. I know they're other things on the menu but so far I've rarely had them. How good is Minnie's -- The food is so good that a good friend (with whom I dine about once a week) and I come here nearly twice a month. The service is friendly and good, especially for a BBQ joint. The ambience -- well you're here for the BBQ.

Always come back here when in SF

By Peterinl0nd0n |

The is the real deal. Order at the counter, tip the jar, and wait for your meaty heaven dish to arrive. Never disappointed! The banter from the staff is great too. Highly recommend.

So good it brought a tear to my eyes.

By AkosiaNYC |

How could meat be this good? I was invited to a Dishcrawl Lower Haight event while visiting San Francisco. This event included visiting four different restaurants in the Lower Haight area of SF and Memphis Minnie’s was one of the stops. We were treated to three different sliders: smoked pork, beef brisket, and pastrami. The meats were succulent and flavorful. The flavor was greatly enhanced by the signature sauces hanging out on the table. Pastrami is only available on Wednesdays. The pastrami was a gift from the heavens which had gone through some sort of ten day process to produce one of the most magnificent displays of meaty heavenliness that I had tasted in a long time. The food was so good … so very very good.

Unique eatery and meat smoke house

By PhillDanze |

I've been here a couple of time now during a couple of trips to San Fransisco, this place has not changed a bit - and that is good. They smoke their own meats to create amazing Reuben sandwiches and Southern Style cuisine. The meat lovers in our group were suitably satisfied! Being a vegetarian I had the mac and cheese which was OK along with the coleslaw so I didn't go hungry. Basic dining room with red and white checked table cloths but it is all part of the experience.
