Great for Brunch!

By tameia |

Came here for a weekend brunch with friends. Good thing we came in early, around 10ish since it gets packed quite fast. Most ordered their special Messhall Benedict. I ordered a BREAKFAST SANDO (short for sandwich) made of “east” pork belly, egg, red chili aioli, cilantro slaw, brioche, only they did not have the pork and it was replaced with bacon instead. Tasted good but a little on the oily side, maybe because of the bacon. Service is ok. Might come back to order the Benedict next time.

Comfort Food with Attitude

By Tracy L |

My cousin and I visited MessHall for dinner at the end of a long day, and it was the perfect place to unwind. The atmosphere is lively, the service is friendly, and the food is great. Be aware that it's fairly noisy -- this is not the place for an intimate conversation -- but it would top my list for a place to go with a group of friends for a fun evening out. The mac and cheese was especially memorable. The BBQ ribs and the fries were also excellent.

Delightfully Filling

By Steph Mc |

Great brunch spot. I came here with a group of 10. We made reservations ahead of time. They were gracious when we had a few people running a little late and didn't make us feel rushed when we stayed for a but after the meal to chat. I had the breakfast sando with pork belly. It had a nice kick to it from the sauce. I tried the hot cakes and mess burger as well. All wonderfully done. The decor was inviting. Next time I would definitely request patio seating.

Nice neighborhood hang out

Only had their small bites, corn fritters, wings, and pimento cheese toast. all delicious, very flavorful, service is excellent. Great patio :)

Very good menu selection

Can’t go wrong at Mess Hall in Los Feliz; something for everyone, casual vibe, nice outdoor seating, excellent service.

We expected a better brunch...

By salesguytoo |

Very average. We came here for brunch and expected something fun and creative for brunch. What we found was a very mundane menu, no atmosphere and an attitude from the entitled wait staff that deserved directions to the unemployment line. We ordered the avocado toast and the biscuits and gravy - both had no flavor to the point that I’m now left to wonder if there is any spice in the restaurant. We will give it another try at dinner but will not return for brunch.

Second time - very disappointing!

By HuntressCA |

We really enjoyed MessHall first time we went. We made the mistake of returning, for a pre-concert drink and dinner. The place was buzzing, very loud and packed. Perhaps that was the problem. We ordered wine by the glass as we wanted different types. They were not the type of wine we ordered and they were both undrinkable. The server insisted they were the right wines, that he poured them himself. He took them back. I ordered a Smoking Jacket Margarita, basically a margarita with smoke flavoring, for a mere $19. I guess the high cost covers the large artisan ice cube in the glass! Bar service was slow and the waiter brought us sparkling wine while we waited for our drinks. We had more luck with the food. Excellent risotto, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken. I was quoted $3 each for the oysters I ordered and was charged $4.50 each. Never have I spent so much time trying to rectify a drinking/dining experience with a server.

Cute place

Family friendly. Burger not the best but not the worst. Just average. Our server was friendly, polite and attentive. He made the visit over the food. Mac and cheese was very good.

A great spot for brunch

By John B |

A trendy, family-friendly casual restaurant serving up creative drink and food a short drive from the Griffith Observatory. We loved the cocktails (the Amanda was very good) and craft beer and the Saturday brunch offerings were great: the French Toast and chicken chilaquiles are good bets and the hash browns a literal brick of tasty potato. Service is very good, the prices fair $14-$18 for entrees) and the setting comfortable. Be sure to try one of their house made donuts!

AMAZING from the food to the drinks to the vibe

By Phil E |

My wife and I came here for a date night over the weekend. We had the most amazing meal, love the decor and the drinks were incredible! I love a restaurant with a good bar program that isn't pretentious. Messhall is amazing. The service was also amazing. Not only did our server give great recommendations, check on us and have a great personality, but our busser was the best busser I've ever seen. Within seconds of my wife spilling some ice, he had already cleaned it all up. He was also an amazing help with getting our desert ordered and we feel like he could be a great server himself. Plus he had a smile on his face the whole time. I'm pretty sure his name is Alan and he deserves to be praised by management. He's awesome. The whole place is awesome.

Very Nice Restaurant in a Beautiful LA Neighborhood

By Ron R |

This was my first visit -- there is both outside and inside dining -- with nice spacing between tables. We had a booth which was perfect for conversation. Lots of good menu choices -- including some nice wine options -- and the servings are on the large side. I had a burger -- very good but nothing special -- and my son had a kale salad which looked very appealing. The Buffalo wings were the star of the show!

Great Cocktails

By Seth G |

I've only been for drinks so far, but I'm excited to enjoy the full MessHall meal experience soon. For now, I've only been for cocktails, and was not disappointed. Their drink special was the "roll the dice," which a bartender's choice drink that you could not return if you were not a fan of what you ended up with. I ordered two, and both were interesting and adventurous choices, one honey-based and one more citrusy thing. The space is really cool, with a summer camp theme (very Moonrise Kingdom) and a chilled out patio with a fire-pit. A nice new addition to the Los Feliz bar scene. I'm looking forward to checking out their brunch and dinner menus soon!

Yum

Great place for a large group...Comfort food and fun atmosphere extras...Valet parking, full bar and friendly service

Excellent Lunch

Recently visited this restaurant for lunch and it was exceptional! I had the Cobb salad and my husband had the Salmon salad. Both were outstanding. Service was great.

Great Late Night Casual Dining

By Jason A |

Tasty braised beef short ribs. Casual setting. friendly service. Open late night. Nice drink selection. Wonderful location in the city. Lots of vegetarian options.

$$$ but Mac 'n Cheese was Superb

By 8budweiser |

Dinner with the fam and a friend. No reservation and we were seated immediately (t'was a Thursday evening). Friendly staff - explained the menu and made recommendations on what to try. MAC n CHEESE is the dish to come here for. French Onion soup was pretty standard (a bit on the salty side). Full rack of ribs was a good size - again nothing out of the ordinary. The chicken sando was nothing to rave about (3 people tried it) but it was OK. Overall you can get better food for a lower price elsewhere.

Love this place:)

By Cstarh |

This restaurant is a great addition to Los Feliz! They have an extensive list of artful cocktails~ honestly, they're all amazing. If you're feeling adventurous, try the 'Roll the dice' option & let the bartender mix up something unexpected. (It's always amazing) Also, try the Mess Burger & the wings~ you won't be disappointed! This place is popular, so calling ahead for a reservation is a good idea on busy nights.

Worst experience

Brunch is a must in MessHall

By Mariano_Arg10 |

I love going for brunch at MessHall, it has great combination of flavors in all their dishes, delicious drinks and a very cozy atmosphere. I always go with my wife or bring fiends from out of town here.

Casual & Enjoyable

By Kat_Goes_Everywhere |

Visited Messhall with an LA based friend, great menu options and prices. We were able to try quite a few dishes and share - staff were very accommodating and attentive. Good wine and other beverage options. Lots of vegetarian choices

Fun and yum

By Tabla B |

Great fried chicken, big portions, fun and inventive drinks, beautiful atmosphere and..... firepits! I've been here twice and haven't been disappointed. Thai mussels were delish, too. It's in a fun neighborhood, near Griffith Park so you can go for a stroll afterwards and work off all the calories.

Casual brunch everything pleased

By barkus1968 |

After exploring Griffith Park we went to the former site of one of Brown Derby restaurants. The decor was interesting including the dome. The pancakes were phenomenal. The gluten free street tacos were tasty. The chicken and gravy was probably the best meal but the Parmesan egg plate and the omelette of the day were both outstanding. Service was steady.

Bustling Restaurant Near Greek Theater

By Robyn P |

This is a popular restaurant with tasty food. Service could have been a bit better, but they were busy. We went in a Tuesday and there are $1 Tacos and Oysters, which we ordered. Happy Hour is 4-6p and the selections were veey tasty. The $1 tacos and oysters were delicious! The only reason for 4 stars: staff are a little elitist (however, Jack Black was dining the night we went). Overall a solid 4 stars- HIGHLY RECOMMEND Tuesday for $1 Tacos and oysters!!!

Great Find!

By PetVetJones |

We stayed in Los Feliz for a week and this gastropub was recommended by the house owner. We tried it out one night and loved every minute of it! The ambience was great, a bit quiet and romantic. The food was out of this world. I literally ate myself sick!

Great menu card

By Virginia M |

Extra points for the kale salad with salmon. This was a very nice combination. Also a lovely restaurants for kids.

Marvelous patio and super service to complement good eats

By Camino_Cap |

Had a chance to meet up with my Dad for dinner and he remembered this location from when he used to work in the area. Loved the patio - the tables were well spaced and it felt very airy and safe as we all continue to manage the challenges of the pandemic. I’m a vegetarian, so we shared three dishes: the super tasty Brussels sprouts, heavenly Mac ‘N’ Cheese and scrumptious House Salad. Seriously, every dish was delicious. High marks for the “Amanda cocktail,” an infused vodka drink that had a fabulous balance of refreshing and zesty. And kudos to our server, Rebecca, and the team of folks who brought out each dish as soon as it was ready. We will be back!

Glad it's so close to home!

By Kimberley |

Had brunch here over the weekend and we just loved the atmosphere. We sat outside which was nicely blocked off from the main street and parking lot with greenery. There were some nice fire pits for bigger groups that we noted for the next time we wanted to come. I ordered the Army Green Kale juice (was feeling a bit LA). Definitely felt like I was getting a healthy dose of my veggies in and it was pretty tasty. My future husband had a cocktail, the JAI ALA which I had a sip of and it was mighty delicious and I don't even like gin! I also had some coffee which was your standard of the mill coffee. For brunch, I had the biscuits and gravy with a scrambled egg while he had a Croque Madame. I thought my dish was just enough food and the flavors were good. The Croque Madame however had way too much bread. If they had served it open faced or cut the slices a bit thinner it would have been much more enjoyable. The service was friendly, you didn't have to wait long to have someone clear your plate or refill your water. I didn't like that the parking lot was ONLY valet but we found street parking and only had to walk a couple blocks which is no big deal. We will most certainly be back!

Don't Mess with Messhall

By Holly K |

Waited just a few minutes to be seated at the bar by the shellfish. We were not happy as a clam there! Do Not sit sit there...waited another 15 before anyone came over. Started with the Stumptwon coffee (3.50) and the peach muffin ($4) smallish size - not into the Costco size, interesting taste (almost like a chai) but I would say leave it. They are generous with their coffee, someone does come by, once they see you, every few minutes. The New Mexico green chili omelette for ($10) was tasty but the potatoes that they said were to die for, would not die for. Description should be more, made with onions and peppers and a dash of salt (not to due for). Should have ended with the omelet, but moved on to the challah french toast ($14) they do have one slice for ($7) it was coconut crusted. If you do go get a slice. The sports playing on the TVs overhead is a draw for some and the barely heard Motown music, nothing to absorb sound makes it incredibly loud. The atmosphere is more like a kid's camp, adorning the walls are a canoe and metal mess hall serving trays. I think I won't be messing with this place again. You can pay for valet parking or go two blocks and park for free.

Execellent food and atmospher!

By vicdru |

Tried MessHall a couple weeks ago - quite by accident. The place was packed for brunch but we only had to wait about 10 minutes without a reservation. The decor is great, very warehouse looking, the staff were great and the food was excellent. I'm glad we didn't sit on the patio, it appeared to be a kennel, there were almost as many dogs there on leashes as there were people!

Great brunch close to Griffith Park

By Allison G |

I chose to get brunch reservations at Messhall because I heard good things and it was very close to Griffith Park, where we had planned to go beforehand. We easily foudn street parking on a Sunday morning, though they do offer valet. We were seated right away and ordered some mimosas and coffee. I had the Chicken Chilaquiles. Normally I prefer my chilaquiles scrambled and all mixed together, but this variation was quite delicious, with two fried eggs overtop the chicken and chips. The service was good and attentive. And I really enjoyed the decor of the place, which was like an upscale camp's messhall. There was outdoor seating near firepits but we sat inside and were comfortable. We sat near a speaker that was pretty loud, but other than that we had a good time here!

Great Cocktails and Delicious Food

By Shaggylom |

Came here with some mates from London on a holiday. Was highly recommended by a local. They had an amazing selection of cocktails, we had to stop ourselves from having too many. The Braised Short Ribs were to die for. Highly recommend them, they also have a Raw Bar so if you like some tasty Oysters, good Cocktails, great food and a fun atmosphere this place is for you

Drinks Review on Labor Day

By Luke A |

Fun spot with camp ground decor. Came on a Monday (Labor Day). Surprised that we did not have a wait to get a table. Staff was very friendly. The time we went, the only menu being served was the brunch menu. Menu appeared to be heavy on breakfast foods (egg dishes). We decided however on a couple drinks. I enjoyed the Blazing World IPA as well as Staff Magician by Mikkeller. Glad to see the beer list was dominated by local/California breweries. My wife had some spritzer drinks. She thoroughly enjoyed her drinks as well. Overall, a lovely experience. Look forward to coming back and getting a try at the food!

Good food. Uneven service

By Chaucer39 |

A trendy place with a fine extensive menu featuring great tastes. Realize this is more neighborhood than upscale. Liked the ambience. Found it friendly overall and a bit uneven in service. Probably should give it another chance.

The BEST cocktails!

By Beth S |

A great plaice for food, drink and friends. A varied casual menu - oysters, sliders, Mac & cheese & bar-b-que, just to name a few items. Super friendly waitstaff. We sat on the patio, in the evening, it was inviting. I've been to "cocktail specialty" bars before and this place had the best, hands down. They have Titos as their well vodka, so you can expect the best. The ice is hand "chunked"? and it looks like a little ice burg. Bring friends or family - you'll enjoy it.

Great meal before hitting the Greek

By DeborahLibra |

My husband, son and I came here for a bite before going to a concert. We only had a little over an hour to eat. We had a reservation but got there early. We expected to have to hang out at the bar but the staff sat us in 5 minutes and the place was packed. The have a really good deal where, if you're heading up the hill, you can order a prex fixe meal for a quick in and out. While we didn't order that, it looked really yummy and was a great value. We did order the most awesome oysters (two dozen because they were so flippen good!) and some of the items from the Greek Concert menu and it was all so good and out toot sweet (sp, lol). Oh, and the drink and wine menu, yes, yes, yes :) I haven't really mentioned the staff.....relaxed, informative, helpful, superb overall. Can't go wrong with this place. Great ambience, great food, oh, and they have a parking lot. If you know that area, you will appreciate that for sure.

Good doughnuts, bad entrees

By ilovecorndogs |

I wished this place was good because the menu sounds appetizing, but the brunch just ended up as kind of a mess of...stuff.... ugh Come in for a doughnut and then leave and go somewhere else. Its expensive too

Very Good Food

By monica-grace |

This restaurant was a surprise because it had a different vibe than I expected. The vibe was north woods camping meets LA. The food was very good with unusual combos. I had boneless short ribs on mashed potatoes with a drizzle of horseradish sauce. Not a usual combo but it was delicious.

Great Space, Great Food

By Kelly V |

Great brunch, fresh food, clean space. Great service, chill atmosphere. My reasons for giving four stars is cold brew extremely watered down and no refills. One refill max seemsreasonable for the price paid.

Good brunch

By davyc71 |

This has become our go-to place for brunch as it is just down the street from our house. It's spacious and comfortable, with the right amount of campiness and bustle. Its crowd is a combination of families and hipsters, in line with the demographics of Los Feliz. The food is solid. My orders are usually the fried chicken and waffle, the dulce de leche french toast, huckleberry pancakes, Cowboy omelet, and country benny (eggs benedict with biscuits and gravy). All good and hearty. Oh, and brewed Stumptown coffee to wash it all down. I would recommend getting a seat in the patio area. Nice vibe out there. Get a seat at one of the fire pits if it's a chilly day. Really pleasant.

Before a concert

By Travelchicks |

We went to Messhall with a group of 13 prior to a concert. The service was great and the food was very good. They handled our large group excellent. The shuttle service worked out perfectly for our group.

love this

By Feliciajuliana |

I went with a friend and had the rib something wich was one of the best meals ive had... (i was also very hungry lol) nice atmosphere too!

Dissapointed

By Jason F |

I looked forward to going here after reading about the reviews in L.A. magazine and other sites. The juices were good, but very sweet which made me wonder how much greens were actually in the juice. The Messburger was okay. A bit dry and the fries were overcooked. Maybe I came on an off-day, but it did not live up to what I was expecting.

A gem close to Griffith observatory

By Camilla |

We had an amazing dinner at Messhall. Sitting in the outdoor area with fireplace. It was so cozy. But most of all we had an amazing dinner and drinks. Our waitress Natascha was incredible. Thank you

Messhall=AMAZING

By Wine51 |

My husband and I had a date night to at ten the Greek theater and picked out this restaurant since it was close buy and the reviews were excellent. Our waitress was Amy Jo and she was fabulous. I highly recommend "Steven's succulent Swizzle" it was the best margarita I have ever had. My husband enjoyed the oysters and his dinner of pork ribs ( he almost said they were better than mine), I had the short rib on mash potatoes and it was good, a little over cooked and dry but I would reorder it again. We have decided this will be our dinner stop before going to the Greek.

A "B" series restaurant in "les Anges"

By pascalfrenchbear |

Looking for a place to have brunch on that Sunday morning I ended up at MessHall. The place is rather crowed at 1:00 pm and the dining room is wait too noisy. The crowed does not look very up scale at all. The girl at the door is not very pleasant. There are about 10 empty tables inside or outside and she tells me there is a 30 minutes line. As i am by myself she suggest that i eat at the bar witch is crowed. I wait five minutes for somebody to leave and ask again why there are so many table free and I why I should wait ? She tells me that she has a waiting list and finally offers me a place in a section of the bar that was free for all the time I was waiting. Talk about bad organization ... I look at the "brunch" menu. Nothing special, the names of the meals sound nice but you end up with the same stuff that you would find anywhere else : coffee, juices, omelets, sandwiches... no sweet. I order a coffee and a C-3 BOMBER (O.J., pineapple, carrots, lemon) nothing special. I don't get sugar? I ask an other waiter, he brings the sugar but does not see that i don't have a spoon. There are a lot of waiters, they are all walking around like a heard of sheep with no head. I got my "CORNED BEEF HASH" (home fries, fried egg) It was boring, flat, nothing you want to remember. All in all for a coffee, 2 boring eggs, potatoes and a carrot juice I pay 30 dollars. If you add the 5 dollars for "valet parking" it turn out to be a very expensive dreadful Brunch... It's very LA, very show off, very unprofessional cooking and service. But in the end, one can't be the next Bruce Willys and buss tables on the same time...

Fabulous food in Los Feliz!

By Sparrow F |

Messhall is a great place to go with friends. They make interesting cocktails, the food is great and interesting and it's open enough that you never feel like it's crowded, even when it is peak operating hours. I love this place!

Great burger

By ajdial |

Usually when a server asks how done you want your burger, regardless it comes out well. At messhall, my server (Martha-excellent) suggested med-rare. I heartily agreed and was pleasantly surprised to receive my burger just right! We also enjoyed the arugula salad, corn fritters, and mac n cheese. Little pricey, but hey, it's LA right outside Griffith Park.

Amazing brunch

By MTorre |

Laid back place with great pastries and juice options. You need to make a reservation but it's worth the trip. The eggs Benedict have the right combination of sauce and bread. And don't miss the pain au chocolat.

Good Dinner

By Traveler |

We had dinner here. The Macaroni and Cheese had 3 cheeses and a tasty breadcrumb topping. Two of us had salads and the fourth one of us had the Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich was huge and crispy. The french fries were cooked to perfection!

Usually good to great, except this time.

By Daniel H |

I have been to Messhall several times and have always have had a great experience. Genuinely nice staff, good food. Overall I would recommend going. Just be careful of the "special" I had the brisket special and most of what was on the sandwhich was globs of carved fat. I will say that even though they made the mistake with this dinner, they handled it well, didn't charge me for the food. In the end I think thats the most important part. They handled their mistake and offered to fix it without attitude. I'd definitely go back.

Noisy and Rather Average

By CAgirlqt |

The food portions are very generous. As long as you know this is not fine dining the food is good, not great. The service although polite was slow considering there were very few tables to serve. I also didn't feel the restaurant was as clean as it should be. I have provided photos of the two meals that we had. Good and very generous servings.

Excellent food & plenty of it!

By 5Pam5 |

We really liked this place. We liked the buzz of it as we walked in. The decoration was fairly basic, but it worked, it made you feel welcome. Our waitress was very friendly, gave us time and offered advice on the menu, kept us posted on the progress of our order. When the food appeared it looked and smelt good, but tasted even better. We had the slow cooked rib and the rack of baby ribs, with the brussel sprouts, green beans and cauliflower as side dishes, all of which were so good. We've been travelling around for just over a week, eating out all the time and this is easily the best meal we've had. The only slightly odd thing was the parking. The parking lot is next door to the restaurant and is valet parking, which we couldn't see the need for, but I guess for a start off, this is LA and valet parking seems to be the norm and maybe at a busier time, they would need to double/triple park to fit everyone in. Apart from that (which wasn't a problem, just an extra few dollars) we found this restaurant to be very good for service, quality and cleanliness and if we are ever in LA again we will definately return here.

I am surprised!

By Vicki K |

To be honest, I was pre-disposed no to like this place. It's hip, noisy, and caters to the army boot and tights crowd. But we decided to go tonight, try a new place. The hostess was nice, friendly, gave us a table near a really noisy table of 10 (but my guess is that anywhere would be noisy. the room is quite "live".) Joey decided on the corn chowder, the half roast chicken and lemonade. I chose two appetizers and a glass of wine. The first appetizer was amazing: a corn fritter with pickled onions with a poblano and pumpkin romescu. I was very happy with it. Joey's corn chowder was also a surprise - he expected a creamed chowder, but it wasn't. It was a very tasty clear green broth with a touch of sweet with the corn kernels. His half chicken was done to perfection (in my eyes, although Joey would have preferred it a bit more well done). Even the cooked vegetables were done beautifully. My second appetizer was shrimp and grits - and they were luscious! It took a few minutes for them to cool down. The red wine the waitress suggested paired well with my two dishes; even Joey's lemonade was excellent - sweet and tart at the same time. I look forward to returning and trying other dishes.

Nice and different restaurant!!

By Flemingdude |

Nice restaurant in a great and safe area of town.,! Th food was ok! On the expensive side for what u get! Probably would not go back!

Modern Eatery with great food

By davsuze |

I have eaten here twice and both times were pleasant experiences. On the brunch menu I had the farmers hash with eggs and it was very good. The salads and sandwiches looked great. This is a nice neighborhood restaurant that is worth a try.

Variety of Dishes and Killer Cocktails

By Joel R |

There is a good variety of stuff on the menu that should satisfy anyone in your group, from Carnivore to Vegan, and the creative cocktails they have are dynamite. We can vouch for The Amanda and Constantinos Revenge. Chili-infused vodka will make you sing! Nice staff, great patio and did I mention the great cocktails? We'll be back!

Decent food, but VERY loud place!

By turtlegal0624 |

The service and the food were decent - nothing exciting; average. The noise level made it very difficult to hold a conversation. NOT a place for business meetings or for meeting anyone with whom you actually want to TALK!

Best Oyster Happy Hour...

By mike h |

A big part of why Los Feliz is becoming a magnet for the up and coming in the city.Great Monday Happy Hour.Tuesday Oyster Special.Craft Cocktails Special on Thursday.Always a reason to pop in. Varied menu...bit pricey...but the vibe and people watching make it worth it. Service staff from the front door to bussers are fantastic. They really cater to you. Only thing that would improve is live jazz several nights a week.

Wings & penicillin cocktail... Enough Said!

By Nellie Morelli |

Oysters are great... Mac&Cheese is tasty! Wings are fantastic... but their penicillin cocktail, holy hell! This is a great restaurant for couples or groups. We love it, whether it is sitting at the bar or by the fire pits outside.

Great atmosphere

By Tim S |

This neighborhood gastro pub was very nice with excellent atmosphere and service. The menu was very good serving a good variety of upscale comfort food. The oysters were very good.. Our server described the special Ono fish dish as a light fish like sea bass when it is really more like tuna steak so I was just ok with my entre but everyone else's meal looked excellent. All in all we really enjoyed the Mess Hall!

Great ribs

By John R |

Popped in as had just been up to take photos of the Hollywood sign and saw this restaurant coming back down. I had the full rack of ribs with sides and they were lovely and the portion way too much for me to finish. Sat in the garden eating and would certainly visit again, it’s not the cheapest but for LA I guess it worked out decent value overall.

Trendy place with good food

By TravelerfromArizona |

Neat restaurant with good food. We had the double cheeseburger which were great! Service was good, food was good, a little pricey but that is what things go for in the particular area of town, so... Would definitely recommend eating here!

Great Fun Place - Great Food

By cameraguy52 |

I was in LA to visit my son and his roommate suggested MessHall. I'm so glad she did as we had a wonderful time. Drinks at the bar for starters and we tried some of the specialties - very good. Dinner was excellent: Ruby Red Trout, Braised Rabbit & Papparde and Burrata Salad. We sat outside under the awning in a quite corner. What a wonderful place to catch up with two young people making a living in LA. Lots of people and all seemed to be having a great time. I would go back again and again.

Decent happy hour offerings, always good food

By Alex J |

I always have pleasant, tasty experiences at MessHall. You don't even need to fall for the oyster deals to enjoy their happy hour offerings - there's plenty of other delicious options, too.

Good Food, Good Vibes

By Lori J |

Went to MessHall for brunch with friends. The menu is extensive, as well as their drink menu. Interior is warmly decorated, and the patio is large and inviting. Server was friendly and all the freshly baked donuts looked delicious. :)

Trendy and Comforting

By R4808E |

Oysters to start off with....didn't last more then a few minutes. Very fresh. Great food, great service, good bar. Worth the wait. Everything we ordered was delicious. Will go back. Dog friendly, too!!

Nice new cuisine

By szymanskimom |

We were here during their off house and were nearly the only party in the house. Even so, it was pleasant and the service was good. I ordered the open face grilled cheese. It was some good, whole-grain bread with cheese and spread with some marinara and guacamole. It was nice and hot and totally hit the spot.

Oh so Los Feliz

By Cory Graham |

MessHall is delicious for brunch and dinner. Excellent drinks (Roll the Dice option hasn't let me down once) and patio seating. Great for parties and dates.

Mediocre

By Diner901 |

The restaurant theme is very cute. It reminds me of summer camp. The cheeseburger that I ordered was burned and the French fries were cold. Our waiter quickly replaced it with a properly cooked cheeseburger and piping hot French fries. I appreciate the quick correction. They also gave us a free dessert for our trouble.

Great always!

By Mariano_Arg10 |

We love MessHall, the food quality and service are always on top. The acoustic on the patio it's not the best, but not a deal breaker. Recommended for brunch, lunch and dinner.

MessHorror

By jak n |

Just average..fell for the hype..Since this was our first visit we sampled a cross section of items. But nothing was worth coming back to try again.. No one ask why we weren't finishing our food. lol gues they thought we didn't fit in with the hipster crowd...

Los Feliz Gem

By Ani K |

Wonderful drinks, appetizers and entrees at Messhall Kitchen. I loved the Amanda I ordered, and everyone else enjoyed their vodka martinis. Everything the four of us ordered - Mac-n-Cheese, Grilled Artichokes (two orders), Crispy Brussels, Tuna Tartar, Ruby Red Trout, Braised Short Ribs, and Braised Rabbit and Pappardelle - was super tasty. We shared everything we ordered and that worked out really well. Although not as good as the savory portion of our meal, our two desserts, the baklava sundae and banana cream jar pie, were good. The service was excellent and the place had a lively atmosphere. Looking forward to going back when I am in the Los Feliz neighborhood.

skip it!

brunch was a disappointment. ugh. and i have the stomach ache after to prove it. sorry to say, nice, balcony seating but the food was just whatever in the presentation and a bit of a punch to the stomach. i had the cornbeef hash - just to warn you, it's not much of a hash at all! it's sliced potatoes, small squared chunks of cornbeef. SKIP IT! and my friend has the eggs your way, i mean i felt like i was in a dorm cafeteria. i will say the mimosas were good!? skip the food!

Outstanding staff

By Chaucer39 |

While it looks like it needs some updating, the place is very friendly. We found the staff courteous and helpful. They worked together smoothly to overcome an average menu in a tired place. The food was prepared well, presented nicely and portions were the right size. Not sure I could go back until they did some remodeling.

Delicious

I enjoyed the ribs and salad and my husband had one of the vegetarian dishes. Great they accommodate all!

A great addition to the neighborhood restaurant scene

By Wanderer922 |

My new favorite neighborhood haunt! I’ve visited MessHall 5 or 6 times since it opened a few months ago and have not been disappointed. Let’s start with the bar... Overseen by Erik, you won’t find a tastier cocktail anywhere else. Go for the Bartender’s Choice and put yourself in their capable hands. I’ve found new libations I never thought I would like, including the Old Fashioned and something called a Fancy Free. Excellent bourbon selection. Go for happy hour or sit at the raw bar for lunch or dinner. (Just don’t ask for olives in your martini, or try to order one of those fancy club drinks like a Cosmopolitan... You’ll get the Erik Lund eye-roll. This is a classic, straight-up bar.) I’ve dined at MessHall for brunch, lunch and dinner and the food is all outstanding. I’m not a burger gal but theirs is to-die-for. It comes with some pretty great fries and – be warned - they put some smoky substance in the ketchup that is completely addictive. I’ve also had some outstanding seafood there, including fresh oysters from the afore-mentioned raw bar. Brunch includes some great staples like biscuits and gravy, as well as a good selection of egg dishes. And don’t forget to try the brunch-style cocktails – their version of the Ramos Fizz was just right for me. Atmosphere is great - upscale rustic, and I like that they preserved the old Brown Derby wooden dome. Nice patio seating, too, with a few square tables with fire pits in the center. Given that MessHall is within walking distance, I’ll be back there again and again!

Local Dining with

By 112tammyt |

Great food and nice casual atmosphere. Only had indoor dining but still nice. Went on Tuesday and found $1 tacos. Very small but good. My meal was exceptional. I asked the server for recommendations and he didn't hesitate suggesting the Slow Cooked Short Rib dinner. He said it was popular and had been on the menu for the past 5 years. Glad I order it. One of the best meals I've ever had! I would of given the restaurant 5 stars except I didn't like paying $6 for valet parking. Also the table we were seated at was very noisy. The speaker was right above our table. We couldn't hear each other. However, the server was accommodating and did get the music turned down some but it stilled seemed too loud. I would definitely return and recommend the MessHall to others. Service was very good.

MessHall after a walk in the [Griffith] park!

Good place to go before The Greek or after a walk in Griffith Park... eclectic menu, brunch on Sunday: e.g. smoked trout benedict, lunch smoked mackerel German salad, happy hour family and large party friendly

Dine and Ride visit to MessHall

By wannahula |

Our party of 5 was attending a concert at the Greek theater and decided to try out the dine and ride package through the MessHall. Dine and ride is a service where you park your car at a specific restaurant, eat at the restaurant, then are shuttled to and from the concert venue. It sounds ideal. The MessHall is a cool, casual restaurant. We were seated right away by a friendly hostess. For the dine and ride program, the menu is limited to one salad, choice of 5 different entrees, and one desert. I had checked out the menu online before we left, so I had an idea of what I wanted. Once we arrived, a couple of things had changed, but it wasn't that big of a deal. The salad was a spinach salad with cheese, nuts, pickled strawberries, and a raspberry dressing. It was average. For entrees, my table had one order of their chicken, 3 orders of brisket, and one order of ribs. The chicken and ribs were good but the brisket was another story. It was chewy and difficult to cut through. I got the waiter's attention to tell him it was tough and he brought the table steak knives. Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick either. We did end up sending back one of the orders, getting the ribs instead. The desert was an oatmeal cookie sandwich with vanilla ice cream. That was very good but very sweet. Each of us got our own but we would have been just fine splitting one between the five of us. I'm kind of sorry that we tried this restaurant for the first time with the dine and ride deal. I felt like our food was more in line with a banquet situation where everything was pre made. On top of that, since the tip was already prepaid in the deal, I felt like our waiter spent the minimum amount of time at our table, as was possible. I did get a chance to look at the regular menu and the food sounded delicious. The restaurant was doing good business while we were there so they must be doing something right. I look forward to going back at a time when I can order off of the entire menu.

Modern and Noisy

By aeiou2018 |

The food is average, the decor pleasant but not overwhelming, but it is somewhat noisy. Nice bar and ceiling.

Great spot!

Terrific food, great wine, and really welcoming service. I went on my first night in LA, tired after a long haul flight - and I'm really glad I did!!

OK, Not Great

By Max G |

It's been almost 4 years since my last visit to Messhall, so I took some friends for lunch. We had the Brussel sprouts appetizer. They were OK, but were smothered in balsamic vinegar, which dominated all of the other flavors. I had their burger, which was good, but not great, especially for $18. The challah bun could not stand up to the juice in the burger and toppings. Hint: If you're going to order a burger, get it cooked one more step than you normally would. I ordered medium rare and it was very rare. My friend ordered a burger medium and it was cooked medium rare. My other friend had the kale salad. It was ordinary. Service was great. The quality is just not there. With so many other choices in the area, it will probably be another 4 years before I go back.

Refuel after a walk up to the Hollywood sign

By Buzz69Melbourne |

On my recent visit to catch up with a friend from primary school, we stopped into the MessHall after a walk to the Hollywood sign. 'What's for lunch?' was my only thought on our descent from the sign. Luckily, my friend knew this hip joint and wanted to give it a try. The valet parking cost $5, and had us concerned that our now sweaty weekend active wear may be too casual. Happily we were seated at a high bench within 5-10 mins of entering. The place was busy with couples, families and small groups, all enjoying a variety of beverages and appealing meals. The menu was terrific but had too many options. That being said, I had the Breakfast Sando (basically a burger) which was absolutely delicious. My friend had the Mr Cobb, and while filling and tasty, wishes she had the burger! We saw a few tables ordering the Housemade Belgian Waffle with fruit and cream, and thought it would go down nicely with a Stumptown cappuccino. How wrong we were - it was devine! The syrup was NOT ridiculously sweet that it over powered the fruit. The prices may be a little on the high side for the area, but I was definitely not concerned with the price considering the food was awesome! Would love to come back here...

Still finding their feet.

By betteryeti |

This restaurant opened up a couple of years ago, and I feel like it's still working out the formula. I live in the neighborhood, and I used to eat at this location all the time, before Mess Hall took over. I'm supposed to be their captive audience, but I've only been a couple of times in as many years. It really seems like an evening watering hole/meeting place for twenty-something apartment-dwellers in Los Feliz. The food is perfectly fine, but it's all kind of pretentious and overpriced, and the service is a little bit too-cool-for-school. Don't get me wrong: this place is perfectly fine, but given the number of other fantastic places that are very close-by (Hillhurst, Vermont Avenues) it just doesn't stand out very much. This is the big city -- you have to be special to get my business.

Average Fried Chicken

By melobeam |

The Skinny: Parking: $5 Valet Decor: upscale hipster Restrooms: large and modern Coke Factor: weak carbonation Food: eh I brought my hubby here for an easy relaxed bday dinner. The decor is welcoming and the patio was very comfortable. Our server was attentive and we felt well taken care of. The food was just so so and that was disappointing. We had the corn fritters which on there own weren't very flavorful. Make sure you have a bite of the pickled onion and the sauce to liven up the dish. The ceviche was better and way more flavorful. The blue corn chips had a nice crunch, not sure if they were house made. Our last dish was the fried chicken. The coating was bland and so was the chicken. After eating brined fried chicken, not sure if anything else can live up to it. The slaw was nice and crisp and potatoes were decent.

If you loved summer camp, visit MessHall!

By Bradley1965 |

This is a great little joint if you are looking for something casual. It has a wonderful outside patio with fire pits. I came in rather late 10:00PM on a Sunday and the pits were not lit. Hopefully that was because I was so late in the evening. The server was cool and quick to get drinks and place the order. The menu is pretty exciting with interesting combinations of ingredients. Like the mustard bbq rib stack with pickled watermelon...yum. In fact they like to pickle everything. I also enjoyed the grilled artichokes, Mac and cheese, salad with smoked cheddar and picked strawberry strawberries and the chefs selection of charcuterie. Note: if you order the small selection you need to inquire if there will be any pate or preserves with it. My order only came with some stone ground mustard, it needed a little more. Like I said the server was fine though some training in how everything is prepared and the names of the meats would be cool. I do applaud the unique theme that runs through the place. It is designed like a summer camp mess hall. Very clever.

Hipster haven

By Matthew S |

Went for brunch, or as our waitress put it, "brunchy fun". The food was average, a little over priced. What I found striking about the place was that every hipster within 5 miles seems to be magnetically drawn to it. I almost couldn't get in without a beanie on. Also there is no parking other then the valet only parking lot which seems to only be valet to either make it seem more upity or make extra money by forcing you to pay to park at their own resturant. I won't be back unless God makes me 15 years younger and endowes me with a master of the universe complex.

Amazing place- featuring local purveyors and farms

By J&H74 |

We love Messhall in Los Feliz and try to go each time we are in LA. Parking is so easy, keys to the valet and the car stays on site! We tried many things from the revised menu which had meatless meat pot stickers - wow!! I could have had another order of these. Deviled eggs - nice fresh dill taste- reminiscent of my grandmothers Pork belly- wow, tender and crisp on the outside Chicken sando- this variation had Brie, the chicken was perfectly cooked and there was spice to give it a kick Cheese board- nice selection of cheese sources locally, bread was great and the honey added a perfect balance of sweetness Scallops- in a shell- served with kumquat and Serrano - tart and spicy- perfect! We liked it so much we went for brunch a couple of days later and the avacado toast was great, just like I get it in Mexico. One thing I was really impressed with was the rose’ which was offered to support breast cancer awareness month. If you have been touched by the disease, it warms your heart to see independent businesses participating in the effort to find a cure. I wish I had been there on a Monday to try the all night happy hour!

Good Lunch Menu

By allnines1414 |

Needed to grab a quick lunch and Messhall offered a nice lunch menu and good service. The Kale Caesar and Burger were both very good.

Perfect Launch Pad to The Greek

By shayandthecity |

This is the perfect spot to pregame before a show at The Greek. It’s about a 20-minute walk to the venue from here through a lovely neighborhood. We picked this spot for its proximity to the venue, but were delighted when the food was outstanding - which wasn’t expected. We did make reservations in advance and when we got seated in the parking lot shed, we asked & were immediately moved to a more-pleasant area. Service was fantastic.

Very creative menu with a focus on breakfast

By AggieJoe79 |

Valet parking makes it easy to dine at this cool spot in tony Los Feliz. Had bruleed grapefruit (excellent), their version of a Benedict, great omelet - would go back again next visit, many options to try.

Decent food and friendly staff in a bustling atmosphere

By LeicinaSpecial |

A fairly broad menu with lots of options: prix fixe, TV dinner or a la carte. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She listened to our questions and needs. We had lots of starters, app and small plates. The brussel sprouts were amazing, some of the best I've ever had. Te corn fritters much less so. But we did well. The atmosphere is a little out. Reminds me of an upscale college sports bar (which is not the greatest compliment.) The food was quite good, but not gourmet. But I appreciated the variety on the menu, which allowed for many choices. We ordered in stages and paced ourselves and might go back, but it's decent, rather than amazing.

Amazing Drink Program

By KasleBounce |

Although my friends and I didn't have the chance to eat, I can tell you if the food is as good and well crafted as the cocktails, then you are in for one amazing night. Erik, the bar manager, and Ben are great bartenders. They the perfect mix of friendly, meticulous and professional. The "Roll The Dice" choice (having the bartender make you whatever he feels like) is a great way to try new things and expand your palate. At $9.00 a drink, you can afford to try a few things. (Beats the pants off of any New York City bar when it comes to value.) Cannot wait to go back to LA and spend more time there.

Drab, like the name. . .

By Cattylea |

Saddened to see that Louisa's Los Feliz was no longer in business, I was hoping that its replacement would retain the charm and casual elegance of rich cherry wood and sunny upholstery which had been perfect for girlfriend lunches. Upon seeing the name MessHall, I was disappointed but thought I'd gather the ladies and give it a try. We grabbed an outdoor table, noticing that the feel was rather Spartan and that the diners were 95% male. The menu selections were centered around the hardwood grill but also featured a Mr. Cobb salad (chunked instead of chopped) as well as beet and kale offerings, chili, and rations (side dishes.) The focal point of the indoor dining area is the raw oyster/cocktail bar. We ordered the pork tacos with pineapple/cilantro salsa and a side of cole slaw. The food was drab-looking but tasted good enough. The slaw was delicious! I doubt I'd return unless it was to treat my husband, but I'd feel good in recommending it to those with more testosterone than me!

Nice atmosphere with mediocre overpriced food

By baybee63 |

It is a hip place to meet friends for drinks with a nice interior atmosphere. The food is overpriced and is good, not great. We have not returned there since our first visit since we found it overpriced for dinner.

Might be my favorite place in Los Angeles

By BigDTravel |

We were at the Griffith Observatory until late and had not eaten since lunch. Checked TripAdvisor and saw this place was highly rated. We started with the Mac n Cheese. I'm an aficionado and this was one of the best I have ever eaten. Really great cheddar taste. Then we had the Mess Burger and it was awesome. We also ordered the fries and the surprising/delicious thing about them is that the ketchup has a smoky flavor that was unique and fantastic. We finished it off with a pretzel chocolate bread pudding. Very good, but I wish we had tried the Key Lime pie. It looked amazing. Next time. Finally, the iced tea was amazing. The waitress said it was from Seattle. I wish I had asked more questions about it. Really, really good. Highly recommend this place.

Unique

By Goldenmetis |

I didn't know cheese grits could be sooo delicious! We loved the tables around fire pits on the porch.

Crying for Flavor

By Carina Cristiano |

This fun upbeat location located right down the hill from the Greek Theater was slightly disappointing. We ordered from the Happy Hour menu as well as dining. We have a concert to get to. Buffalo wings, absolutely no taste. Strange considering this dish has a standard no matter where you order it. Corn fritters, there was just no sweet corn taste. Felt like a fried ball of grease in my mouth. Didn't get any pumpkin, but a lot of smokey. Cobb Salad, had a fried breaded chicken breast under iceberg lettuce. I do not generally eat iceberg, but gave it a try. The dressing had a heavy oil texture. Again no taste. The staff is friendly and upbeat and this goes well with the cool LA vibe. Maybe we just had bad luck on our selections. No taste at all. We finally asked for salt and pepper. For the first time in my relationship history, Dave did not finish the food at the table. Well, off to see Steve Miller and Peter Frampton. Wish we had eaten elsewhere. Next time maybe just enjoy a beverage here.

Please don’t gouge us

By FGU |

Very food, good service. We had burgers, Brussel sprouts, short ribs, chicken, wings, drinks…Liked the atmosphere. Attentive service. One complaint and only one. We were a party of 8. Not a difficult party, we were easy. Restaurants have often added a tip to large parties. That surcharge is 15% but that’s not what happened here. Service was good, but not 20% good. They added 20%! We won’t be returning. I think it should have been 15% with the option to go to 20.

Hidden gem with great vibes and even better food!

By Garrett |

Came by the other night on a whim for some dinner before an evening out in LA and I was NOT disappointed! After handing off my car to the valet ($8 BTW) we walked into the Messhall. The outside was very understated but inside had a summer camp cabin vibe and I am all here for it! After being sat we met our amazing server Gabriel (apologies if I spelled that wrong) who walked us through the menu and the fun drink menu! We picked out some drinks and food at Gabriel’s recommendation and waited… In a word…wow! The food and drinks came out quickly and were amazing!! The biscuits were flaky and delicious and then there was my FishFry on a massive plate. This is where you get your monies worth when it comes to the amount of food AND quality! Long story short we were very impressed and will no doubt be back! Can’t wait to try more of their menu!!

Delicious Pancakes!

By bflynn |

Went here for brunch for a friend's birthday. I had the German chocolate pancakes which were amazing! This place is a bit pricey so it's definitely worth going if you want a treat or something a bit special if you plan on going all out. Plenty of different options to choose from too

Cool vibe

By Frith M |

Cool vibe, good service and good food. Cocktails great! We visited as a family and my husband loves the oysters. Would recommend more for couples.

Brilliant Brunch

By CEG12 |

Lunch on the covered patio on a late Sunday morning was great. With a reservation, six were seated quickly and staff allowed to stay a long and leisurely time to enjoy the food, coffee, and talk. Great thick smokey bacon incorporated into several dishes. The Campfire Benny -- grit cakes in a smokey bisque sauce with bacon -- was just the right size. Fresh squeezed orange juice was sweet and the coffee strong. One drawback: the noise level is high.

Fantastic ambience and best spicy cocktails

By 3Guapastravel |

Definitely try the AMANDA cocktail- vodka infused with lemon juice and serano chile. Very spicy and delicious!!!! Fun atmosphere, reservations recommended. Short Ribs, Mac and Cheese and warm Spinach Salad are my favorite.

Nice, but crowded restaurant

By Mark J |

My family and i came here because I had read about their chicken sandwich and wanted to give it a try. The sandwich was good, the aioli fantastic. Unfortunately the fries were pretty much served cold, a big deal for me. It would have taken way to long to re-order so we just sampled them. Great flavor but, as I said, cold. My family's other dishes were quite well received. We'll be back with a bit more knowledge next time.

Great place to meet with friends

By OCDane |

Meet with friends for beer and food. The place is very friendly with great atmosphere and the service is quick and friendly. Food is just ok, nothing great... ribs is a small portion of 6 skinny bones, but the desert is good (banana pie), and the wings are good and spicy - but with too much sauce on them.. I would come back, but order different food..

Great Pre-Greek Theater stop

By rlstantn |

Messhall is hardly noticeable off Los Feliz but was a good stop for pre-Greek Theater dinner. The drinks are a tad pricey, but the happy hour helps. Valet parking for $5 is welcome as there's none in the area. If we'd wanted to leave our car until after the theater they'd charge $8. No shuttle, but folks around us were using uber to get up the hill, and some were walking back down. Probably wouldn't be bad. Their focus is burgers and smoked fare, and my wife's Back Ribs were great and fairly priced. My short rib stew was also very good. About the only downer was the price of the booze. We'd definitely consider going there again when we go back to the GReek.

Something for everyone

By Linda F |

I've eaten at Messhall before, several months ago. It is a great place to dine when you have a group of people with different interests in food. Everything from a burger (my husband) to the Lamb Cassoulet (me), and the non-dairy Sea Bream (for our daughter) were very good. We started with the Hot Wings -- a MUST TRY appetizer, they are unlike any we have ever had. We also tried the corn fritters, a bit dry and could use some sauce perhaps. Very nice atmosphere for a casual non-white table cloth service.

Good foood

By joe e |

Good hamburger and French fries. Stopped by for a quick lunch and enjoyed the food. Nice service, a little pricey.

Great for Oysters and Penicillin

By uptik18 |

We love to head to Messhall for Oysters and cocktails. The menu is varied and their specialty cocktails are spectacular. Penicillin and the Amanda take top honors, depending on our mood. They accept reservations but have accommodated us without. The downside is that the restaurant is rather small and very noisy. We recommend seating outside where it is quieter. The steamed mussels and short ribs are delicious as well as their salads.

Hip Atmosphere

By roelmanolo |

My first time eating here was a Saturday night dinner. We made a reservation for 2, but there seemed to be a few tables open for possible walk-ins. The atmosphere is lively, and the sounds of the space bounce all over as an active white noise. Drinks were nicely crafted, the food was tasty, and the service was top-notch. The corn fritters we had for an appetizer were very good. I'd say our main dishes of chicken sando and salmon were not the best we had tried, but still tasty. I'd go back to try more dishes, and with it being so close to home, it'll be an easy choice.

Mixed review

By slizzie |

I ate here twice lately. First, for dinner with my dining partner, when we found everything to be enjoyable. The second time was for lunch, when just about everything went wrong. Food had to be sent back for not being prepared correctly as well as having hair in it. Our server was great about it and the manager also came over to apologize. We were comped a dessert, which was toffee pudding. It was way too sweet and not very interesting.

Great buzz

By Tim S |

Visited with family and friends. Great atmosphere and very quick and efficient service. I had a burger which was good but not great. Should have ordered one without cheese which was rather too much. We sat in the outside yet covered area where there were a number of tables around fire pits which looked lovely. Good valet parking.

Good Food and Drinks

By Max G |

We visited MessHall during happy hour and we not disappointed. The burger sliders, pulled pork sliders and mini-tacos were delicious. The kale Caesar salad was good, but not great. We tried a bartender's choice with a vodka base and were pleasantly surprised with a variation on a Moscow Mule. I only have two complaints about MessHall: 1) Their draught beer list is weak. They need more variety and handles. 2) Our waiter was not on his game. He forgot my beer order and presented us with an inaccurate bill, twice.

Tasty Brussel Sprouts, steaks & short ribs, late too!

By Avery Martinez |

Stopped at the Mess Hall on Los Feliz on the way back from the Pantages, on way to Hollywood Hotel (5 minutes away.) very pleasantly surprised, every dish was better than the next. started with Tuna Tartar nice and different spices. Next was the Brussel sprouts with cilantro, lime and peppers, awesome! Followed by Steak Frita ( rare with Fries, yum! and tender Short ribs with mashed potatoes and greens. Place is fun and formal, yet very casual. Good drinks, excellent service close to Griffith Park Observatory, Americana and Hollywood Hotel. Ps Hedwig at the Pantages, totally sucks, save your $ We are season ticket holders, the worst ever, total consensus of our family, age 29-60, 4 of us!

Fun,

By christineess |

I met friends for lunch and found the restaurant uncrowded, the service attentive and the food was good. We appreciated the extra touches (root beer bottle candies at the door, printed matchboxes, homer laughlin plates, and so much more). The food was very good, I had a cobb salad (had to considering the history) - it was pretty good. Friends had shrimp and grits - really fun and the burgers looked delicious. For desert, we had a chocolate cheesecake that was outstanding. Their

Great experience

By Joe M |

Brought my team of 20 there (all were from out of town) for a dinner and meeting. I wanted an experience outside of the usual Downtown L.A. scene. They all loved it and raved about it for days!

Lunch: salad, burgers, tacos

By Norjeff2 |

Place is closed from 3:00-4:00. Seated at 2:50 and they were still willing to take our order. We sat outside at a table where coals were burning. Kept things warm while there was a slight chill in the air. At lunch things are ala carte so a burger is $12.00 but the fries are $5.00 extra. The restaurant is casual dining during lunch. The burgers come on a brioche bun and are very good. The fries are crispy and excellent. The only downsize of the fries is that it is a very small portion. Tip: restaurant is .25 miles from Griffith park so it is a nice place to go after a long hike. Tip: bathrooms are very clean and nice. Tip: mandatory valet parking is $5.00.

Fresh Food…great cocktails!

By Jonathan Q |

Loved this dining experience. Conveniently located for a meal before going to the Greek Theatre, MessHall offers a fresh, interesting menu. Good selection of fish, chicken, meat and vegetarian dishes. Recommend the Salmon for something healthy, but substantial. Didn't love the beet salad, which is strange because I normally do. Get the cocktail menu, and order anything. Highly recommend the Mint Julep.

Excellent meal and Service

By Stevie H |

This place is way better than its name! I was a bit hesitant at first because I'm gluten free but mu waitress was so helpful and her suggestion of the Brussel sprouts was much appreciated as they were out of this world; with both cilantro and mint, red onions, bacon/pancetta and red jalapeño peppers?? Amazing!! Tuna tartare looked amazing and my parents loved it!! Short ribs with mash so good and the steak n frites was excellent!! Service all around was pretty good!!

Family dinner with little and big kids-- comfort food rules

By mcfiddle |

After a long day at Universal Studios Park with our kids and grandkids we needed a friendly place to eat that would suit ages 7 to 70. The Messhall did not disappoint-- its comfort food was perfect for the little ones and the cocktails worked well for the big one. The mac & cheese and fish tacos seemed to be the biggest hits but what I appreciated most was that a couple of items I had decided on were not prepared in their usual manner and the server alerted me to these differences-- which totally changed my order. As tired as I was I would have eaten it anyway but I was very appreciative that she knew enough to "warn" her customers. Well done.

Pretty good

By slizzie |

Overall, the MessHall is pretty good. The menu is limited, especially for a vegetarian. Others in my party enjoyed the rib poutine. The cocktails were also good.

Excellent service, atmosphere and $1 oysters!

By Selina K |

Great menu and lovely service staff. The burger and Ahi tuna salad were fantastic, as were the $1 oysters (served every Tuesday!). My partner and I sat outside in the garden with the fire pit feature, which added to the whole experience and great atmosphere. Would definitely come back here when we visit LA again. Only downside were the hostess staff - who were a bit snobby and short on our arrival - but everything else made up for this.

Nice brunch apot

By tellis232 |

A very decent place for a quick and simple breakfast. We arrived at 9:30am on Saturday morning and it will quiet. By the time we left it started to fill up. Food was tasty and quick and service was good. We would visit again enroute to Hollywood sign sightseeing.

Great Modern Twist on Comfort Food!

By KirkPA |

Novel atmosphere, good food, good service. Definitely worth the wait. Try the oysters to start off - really fresh and seasonal.

Great atmosphere, deco and food.

By Dao Brian T |

One of the better places to hang out with friends treated with good food and drinks. Was taken here by a friend, to meet up with a few others. While we waited we order a few of the signature cocktails, very tasty, along with a dozen oysters ($1 each). Not a bad start. Finally when the rest of the party came, we were seated in front of a fireplace where other parties were sitting opposite us, kind of a communal table. Although the privacy was a concern, it wasn't because the place on a Tuesday was packed and noisy. We ordered another dozen oysters, a few cocktails then the main entrees, the pullled pork and short ribs. The menu in general look appetizing since the traditional plates are recreated in a new way while the new plates are creative with new ingredients. Very good, not spectacular but good. With the table being set up like this, we chatted with the party in front of us which made the experience a bit nicer. Overall the experience was very pleasant. The oysters are cheap but the cocktails are not, so they got you either way. But you pay for other intangibles anyway.

Great food, generous portions

By Debbie M |

Visited this establishment for lunch after spending a hot morning trailing to the Hollywood sign. Open for dine in during COVID, we were seated in the outdoor area, nicely spaced from other diners. Staff was pleasant and we were seated right away. I had the delicious pulled pork sandwich with fries and my husband had the Three Little Piggies Wrap. Both were excellent and large portion size. A little pricey for a lunch with no alcohol ($40 before tip), but to be expected in Hollywood and while on vacation. Highly recommend.

We were spending the day in Griffith Park and were looking for a spot not too far away. Great spot, great lunch/brunch options; everyone cleaned their plate. Service was excellent and who can beat a $4 valet!

Cheap Lunch Menu - Try the corn fritters

By cakesandtravel |

Try their simple happy hour menu, Corn Fritters, Chicken wings with celery and blue cheese amongst other dishes. Found the place to be cheaper than the other restaurants in the area. i like going back every couple of weeks or so. Always welcomed with great service. Great location, have a wonder in the neighborhood whilst you're there.

Quick friendly service. Good food.

By stephanie |

Stopped here after trip to Griffith Observatory. Quick and friendly service. Burgers and chicken tenders were a hit. Ribs too. Loved flavor of tuna tartare but a bit heavy in avocado. Would definitely come back here.

Okay for lunch

By sbenjamen |

Went for lunch. Friendly wait staff (but that seems to be an LA trademark). The lunch menu was limited. Touting restaurant week specials, that were the same price as the lunch menu. Confusing? Ordered a salad with smoked salmon. It was very good. Everyone was very accommodating.

We stopped here for a bite to eat and used the valet parking that's available. We went for lunch and was seated quickly. We ordered several dishes; Santa fe quinoa, Cali Salad and Mac & Cheese as a side to share. The main dishes were very enjoyable; they were light, fresh and filling. The mac & cheese was a great side to share as it was rich in flavour and texture, and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I had the green juice to wash everything down and it was very pleasant.

YUMMY!

Went for dinner with a large group so a little hard to talk to those at the far ends of the table. But then, we were too busy eating and drinking. The smoked corn fritters were familiar but with a kick. I had the baby back ribs which were done perfectly and were very meaty--no fat in sight. The sauce was flavorful both sweet and spicy. A friend had the kale salad and said the best she's had in a long time. There were a large variety of specialty cocktails, but I stayed with my tried and true Seabreeze (vodka, grapefruit juice and cranberry juice) which was very well done. The food was excellent and the price fair. Worth a try.

Fantastic food, friendly service, amazing drinks and plenty of space. Highly recommend the basic burger with fries and a side of wings.

Dinner with Emmy Nominated Nick

Very nice restaurant similar to the Houston or Rutherford Grill accounts. Very crowded for a Thursday night; with many young people in attending. Generic small wine list with no reds from the Napa Valley. Had the Morgan Syrah @ $54. Good service and nice wait staff.

Great burgers in lively restaurant

5 of us ate dinner here. Excellent burgers and great fries and believe it or not wonderful macaroni cheese; who know it could taste so good. Great service. Restaurant lively and buzzy. Interesting mix of food. Went after visit to Griffith Park Observatory as quite close. Plenty of parking; valet parking which is a bit annoying as parking lot is large but that is niggling.

Good food, snarky waiter

I’ve eaten at MessHall several times. The only reason I keep going back is because it is in a convenient location for my daughter, son in law and grandson. My experience has been limited to brunch. The food has always been good and relatively reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the waiters seem aloof, bordering on rude, not helpful and consistently forgetful. The restaurant is in the Los Feliz district and offers on-site valet parking. I just wish that management did something about training and counseling their wait staff.

Incredible restaurant, great to go before a show at the Greek

Wowowowow! We were so impressed by Messhall. This was our first time visiting and it will not be our last. We had 5pm reservations but we were late because of traffic and I called to ask if we could push our reservation and they were very kind and accommodating. When we arrived, we were seated immediately and waters were at our table in under a minute. Our server Michelle was AWESOME! She was super attentive, anticipated our needs before we needed them, knew a lot about the menu, had great suggestions, and was efficient during a very busy time. She is amazing. Off of the happy hour menu (served until 6pm) we ordered oysters, wings, and turkey sliders. All were great. Off the regular menu, we ordered the tuna tartar, beet farro burrata salad, slab of ribs, and brussels sprouts. I cannot rave enough about the food, especially the brussels they were so good. And we were out in time for our show at the Greek up the hill. We will be back!

A Locals Favorite

We had dinner here during a trip to visit our son and were thoroughly impressed. Our son lives close by so we walked to the restaurant. This place is very popular with the locals, which is always a good sign. It’s located on a busy street but parking is available. During cooler weather, they offer seating on the patio with large “fire pits” on some tables. Really unique! The menu changes from time to time but they have rather diverse choices including seafood (raw oysters are available), burgers, salads and other entrees. The corn fritters are a great appetizer, cooked to a very tender consistency. I had the Cobb Salad and it was large and delicious! They also have a full bar and a nice wine list.
