We visited this restaurant before a DSO performance instead of eating at the Meyerson. Mistake. Mediocre at best. Sangria glass only half full, including the ice. It was tasteless.

Sunday lunch. Despite several servers standing around and the place not being that busy, we waited close to 10 minutes for chips and drinks. My wife got a salad, and I got the chicken enchiladas. Frankly, they just weren't that good. On par with El Fenix. (We are local and have Tex-Mex 1-2x per week.) I'd also suggest Mexican Sugar replace its curved plates with flat ones. Mine looked too much like a big dog dish. Service was fairly attentive, but I didn't appreciate the server hovering over me while I determined the tip. The 20% minimum was pretty generous in this case. And fair warning: don't take the Olive Street exit. It's way too narrow. You'll either scrape your bumper or a rim, as I did. Taken together, we won't be returning.

Mexican Sugar - LOVE!

By Cashen B |

Went with with some girlfriends for an al fresco dinner up on the balcony after cocktails at The Ritz-Carlton’s Rattlesnake Bar. Mexican Sugar Uptown is stunning – really a beautiful restaurant. Service was surprisingly fantastic seeing as they just opened. We shared a bunch of food and everything was fantastic but my absolute favorite was the Ahi Tuna Crudo - YUM! The server recommended the La Catrina, a Mezcal based cocktail that I was apprehensive to order, but I’m so glad I took him up on the suggestion – I am obsessed! Can’t wait to bring my husband here for date night. SO GOOD!

Mid food bad management

I had gone to the Irving location in 2023 for Happy Hour and had a great experience. Took my family for an early birthday brunch and left really disappointed, we won’t be back. 1. Food was mediocre and borderline bad. Chips and salsa are the first test at any Mexican food restaurant and at Mexican sugar the chips aren’t great - almost stale and the salsa is overly tomato flavored. Also had the Birria ribs and lobster fundido and guacamole. Guac was bland. Ribs and fundido were better. 2. Service - had to go ask for our waiter after sitting with no water or service for 15 min. We were not told that brunch turned over at 3:30pm - more on this later. We constantly waited for water, more chips, to order and basic service. He was nice enough - he needed help though. 3. The Manager - so we are seated and across from us is a very large party of about 12 ppl waiting for a table. Finally they are ready to be seated. One of the party members (we thought) walked over to our table of four and began by saying - so how is everything? We all looked puzzled. I said fine? He looked puzzled - I said - you don’t work here do you? He said yes I’m the manager. We thought we were being Punk’d. He then goes on to say people often react that way because he is Black and people assume that a Black man wouldn’t be in management there. Huh? So I said, well no, that’s not it at all. You were with that party, you walked over and began to speak, and we didn’t know who you were. He finished his check in and began to walk away - never saying his name. So I asked, him. Deion he said. Well, Deion, if you read this - your first mistake is randomly walking up and not introducing yourself with name and title before you begin randomly speaking to people at the restaurant you manage. There’s not a name tag or logo on your attire - a patron would not know and shouldn’t be assumed to know. Making these instances about race is unfortunate and frankly self imposed as you simply didn’t do your job well. 4. We were told we could order from the brunch menu after our waiter double checked only for Deion to come as we were ordering (he over heard the brunch order) interrupt my brother and tell the waiter - no brunch stopped at 3:30. He didn’t apologize for interrupting nor did he address us ever on changing our order - perhaps he was trying to assert he manager title? Who cares? An experienced manager would have apologized at the very least for interrupting us and potentially spoken to the kitchen since we had been miscommunicated with. Needless to say it was very mid. We won’t be back. And if we don’t hopefully it’s under new management.

Air conditioning not keeping up with the restaurant.

They absolutely have an AC problem. I’ve been there twice this summer and won’t go back until the weather changes. Their air conditioning simply cannot keep up with the need. Service was very slow. Great food but too warm to go there in the summer

Great Service and food, can’t wait to go back! My favorite item was the mango salad, the margaritas were great too, I would go for any occasion!

Cute, warm, delicious!

Honestly I had low expectations...just another trendy Mexican restaurant. But boy was it good! We had the Squash Blossom Quesadilla (Flor de Calabaza) a bouteous shrimp and avocado salad, plus some fried shrimp and elote tacos. All very well prepared, presented, and delicious. Our server, Jose, was attentive, friendly, welcoming and prompt. He tempted us with a Tres Leches cake and we found it to be one of the best we have had...as long as you like coconut, which we do. The manager, Dion, popped by to check on us and make sure all was well...and it definitely was.

Great views, service and tasty food

Sat on the upstairs patio for Brunch around 3pm. The place was completely packed. The view and decor of this place is top notch as was the service. Try the French Toast, hands down best I’ve had in town.

Mexican Sugar Uptown is A REAL VIBE. Stunning design. Incredible location in Uptown right across the street from The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas. Two big bars (one two floors) with what had to be the largest mezcal/tequila selection I have ever seen. Food is KILLER. Short Rib Fajitas and Whole Fried Snapper for the win! For cocktails my wife loved the Margarita flight and the Esco-Bar. The Concha for dessert sealed it off, and I love that they serve coffee from Mexico. Every detail thoughtful and delicious. Service was hospitable but not obtrusive. Run. Don’t walk!
