The Mi Tierra restaurant in San Antonio is well known to the tourist because of its location downtown but this location is a ways out of downtown, by the Rim. It has the same kind of atmosphere, very colorful and "fiesta like". The menu is basically the same as what is offered downtown. As far as Mexican food is concerned it is very average as San Antonio has a lot of better places to eat. Come for the colorful venue and you'll enjoy it.

There are some rather terrible Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, and I wouldn't say this eatery is the worst, but let's just say it could be a contender. First the scene. The restaurant is the branch location of the downtown Mi Tierra restaurant, founded and maintained by the Cortez family. That location has anchored the Market area, surrounded by curio chops and other eateries, catering to tourists and locals for years. Mi Familia is far north of the Market, within the Rim complex. The restaurant is sprawling, of newer build, an homage to Spanish design. Entering past the dais is the bar area with seating right of entry, and left of entry is the main dining area, and left of that an additional dining area (for private parties?), and patio seating outdoors. The ceiling is decorated with hundreds of cellophane banners, giving an astonishing appearance to the room. Seating is expansive, with perhaps 50 to 60 tables for diners. The ambience is lively, and often, the air is filled with the waitstaff singing Happy Birthday (Las Mananitas) to such an honored guest. We arrived for evening dinner on Sunday, with reservation, but the restaurant had but a few guests throughout. Eric our waiter was a bit tardy in attending our table, but thereafter, was appropriately attentive. We began with aperitifs: vodka tonic and margarita. My tonic was heavy on the tonic and parsimonious of the vodka; the margarita was the better of the two. We ordered the carnita plate for two, the protein delivered on a sizzling platter, and sided with rice and charro beans. The carnita was prepared in chunks, not shredded. Friends here is the problem. The protein was so overcooked we had to work the steak knife overtime to achieve the slice, and was so tough my masseters had the workout of the decade. Add to this, dry and lacking any flavor whatsoever. Thank goodness for the charro beans, for we had to essentially dunk the slices in the broth to render the carnita edible. The rice was ....meh. And the cardinal sin here was the flour tortilla: dry, stiff, chewy. I have had better tortillas from the package at HEB. But to be fair, the charro beans were competitive. So, here is the final thought. This restaurant fails to deliver basic Mexican food that can be found at so many restaurants in our city. And frankly, we considered the prices outlandish for the less than ideal quality. Perhaps the foodstuffs here may be praised from someone from the far north, perhaps from Scandinavia, but to the cognoscenti in our city...no.

I came here with some folks from work for dinner. There was plenty of parking in the lot out front which was great and the location huge. I got there a little earlier than everyone else so sat at the bar for a little bit. The happy hour specials were good for food, however they didn't offer any well drink specials. But a gin and soda is typically only $6 anyway so it was quite reasonable. The dinner menu was huge and it was so hard to made a decision. I ended up choosing the shrimp fajitas and ordered a botana platter for the table. The botana platter was good and all the food was well prepared and hot. However my fajitas were a little disappointing. The shrimp didn't even come with onions and peppers (which I always picture with fajitas) and they didn't have much seasoning. Even the side of guacamole didn't have enough salt added to it. The service was decent, a little slow but they were very busy. Overall it was alright visit.

It is pricey and our meal just wasn't that good. My friend had a Chili Relleno and the beef inside was still pink and not cooked. They were very nice, however, when she pointed it out and brought her another plate. My salad was large but it only had 3 small pieces of chicken. They do have a fabulous bakery in house so it would be worth going there just for that! I will give them another try. This might have just been an "off" day.

First of all, there is no parking, one has to go across the street to be able to find a spot. Second of all, the wait is of at least 30 minutes, after 6:PM it is more than an hour wait. It is still very new, it just opened in December so people are trying it out. Our second time there last night, and the noise was unbearable! Too many children screaming and running all over the place, the sound of kitchens made it worse because acoustics are terrible. Then add to that the Mariachi bands which seem never to go away screaming their lungs away making it impossible to have a conversation, WHY does a restaurant need that kind of noise? It was the worst time ever for a quiet evening out. Service was extremely poor, waiter was slow and confused, and after barely finishing up our meal, the check was ready at the table for us to go, we were not even offered dessert. The kitchens where food comes out from were filthy, there was grease and swiped off food everywhere, countertops and floor, used paper napkins on the floor, we felt disgusted to have been there. So as far as for a quiet outing, it failed, Cleanliness, failed. Service, failed. Food, mediocre. Will probably never go back.

1. Beautiful Place 2. Great Service 3. Tasty Treats 4. Large Portions 5. Authentic Flavor 6. 777 Rating 7. Joseph Guerra/The Best Thank you Joseph for your hospitality and great customer service! Also, tell the manager that this place is here to stay!

Visiting San Antonio and not coming to this restaurant is an incomplete trip. They offer the best Texmex dishes and the best margaritas in town. While having your food you can enjoy live mexican music.

Decent food and margaritas. Expensive. The large bowl of guacamole has lettuce filling half of it , very few onions and peppers on steak fajitas , meat was very good but other Mexican dishes we had were average. Restaurant had a lot of wait staff - service was ok.

Our food was amazing, service was very good and the overall experience was excellent. We will return! A little bit of a wait to get a table, but all worth it!!

The newest offering from the Cortez family, Mi Familia de mi Tierra, is an excellent restaurant in every way. The food is great quality and taste, the service outstanding, and the ambiance is great. It is a combination of the Market Square offerings by the Cortez family Mi Tierra, Mariachi Bar, Pico de Gallo, and La Margarita. Everything about this venue is excellent, we will be visiting this location quite often as it is so close to home. We’ll still visit the Market Square locations, but not as much. The food is superb, the service is excellent, and the ambiance is wonderful....5 stars in every category......great place....you will love it...

I had the bad experience of eating in this restaurant last Monday, October 17, the dishes we ordered, among others, the shrimp with garlic mojo and a plate of menudo, was the worst decision we made since the shrimp had an unpleasant odor typical of shellfish when they have been out of the refrigerator for a long time, any experienced cook can notice this unpleasant smell when preparing. About the menudo, apparently it had been cooked for at least a couple of weeks since the meat or belly looked like an eraser because of how hard it was and the unpleasant smell, just like the shrimp, only two tablespoons were enough to not try it again. Mention aside are the refried beans which apparently use lard or very used oil or the one left by the bacon when it is cooked. In general terms, it was a visit very much in tune with the month of Halloween, very frightening. I hope they have self-criticism and improve their processes and provide a better quality of food according to their prices, which are not cheap at all.

Large family meal out the Friday after Thanksgiving. No reservations, so we waited 45 min. They were true to their time, and we were seated right at the 45 min mark. Good service throughout the meal. Nice typical Tex mex menu. Very good margaritas and food. True to the name, and nice family meal. Will be back, but at a time when the wait isn’t quite as long! Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

We have gone to Mi Tierra in the downtown market for 20 years and always happy with service and meals. Got excited when they opened up Mi Familia in the Rim since it is much closer for us to drive. What a disappointment! Everyone was courteous and pleasant but the food quality fell way short of the parent restaurant (Mi Tierra). The food was not tasteful at all. Sad!

We’re so glad that Mi Tierra opened a restaurant at the Rim. We love their tamales with chili con carne and it’s just as good at this new location. The service was fantastic. We will certainly return!

True to the Mi Tierra Tradition! Early dinner was delicious from beginning to end ! My Filete de Pescado was excellent with a couple shrimp on the Mahi Mahi and a seafood enchilada with tasty sauce. The Steak and Echilada plate received rave reviews from my Sweetheart; with two nice pieces of steak and an enchilada. Yadira did an excellent job of keeping our glasses full and responding to our every request! Thank you Yadira! Good food & Great Service!

Stopped in on a whim to try the latest and greatest effort to bring good TexMex to the I-10 corridor. 2:20 PM on a Sunday so my thoughts are that the bar would be a good place to have an appetizer and a cool one. The Greeter was able to point me to the bar with an awkward statement about “not sitting in the back of the bar” because there was no server. I asked if the actual bar was available and she said yes. Went to the bar and asked who i assumed was the Bartender for a menu in order to get an appetizer started. He mentioned he would have to go find the bartender to ask. To ask? For what? Another couple was at the bar finishing a meal so I was confused to say the least. Minutes later another person whom I thought was the bartender (was not) came and asked if we had been taken care of. I explained that j was trying to order an appetizer and she stated “we aren’t serving food at the bar at this hour.” I mentioned the couple next to me eating and she said “They ordered earlier when it was available. I mentioned the Greeter sending me to the bar for an appetizer, and she had no response. No review of food but the staff obviously did not have there story or restaurant rules down. Will try again after the place matures a bit.

We had some of the best tex mez food I have ever eaten. We went for breakfast and had the huevos rancheros. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the ranchero sauce was delicate but full of flavor. The coffee was excellent. It was so good we went back for dinner. My companion has mole and I had to sneak tastes ---excellent! I had tamale, enchilada and taco and also delicious. I definetly recommend this place and will return the next time I am in San Antonio

This Northside restaurant is a spin-off of the famous downtown Mi Tierra where we have dined for over 50 years. The service was great and the food was good but in my opinion not quite as good as at the original location. The bar certainly knows how to fill a glass with tap beer. Hate to give only four stars but I still recommend highly.

This is a clone of their longstanding downtown location complete with the decoration. The menu is the same so it appears and delicious. There is inside and outside seating. We have been here for breakfast and dinner. Favorite for breakfast are the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros both are really good. Dinner/lunch favorites are michoacan (pork) and flatas de pollo. We have also had the enchiladas verdes which is delicious. For those who are adventurous they have menudo. The margaritas are among the best in the city. Service is quite good and friendly. The booths have USB ports to charge your smart phones.

The quality of food is similar to what you'd get at the flagship restaurant downtown. The margarita was excellent! This is a modern restaurant though and doesn't have the same ambience as the other restaurant. My grandson was playing with my wife's phone and her drivers' license fell out, unbeknownst to us. We called the restaurant later, told them who our waiter was (Lawrence) and we were reassured they had the Drivers' License secured.

My family enjoyed dinner here one evening on our San Antonio vacation. Excellent food and service. Great atmosphere also

Had Dinner with friends On a Friday evening about 5:30 and got right in - I wouldn't wait too long as it was packed by the time we left. We were seated almost immediately. Greeted by the MGR. When we were led to the dinning area I was surprised by the decorations - it felt festive and fun. Pedro our waiter was fantastic and over the top. If you've read my reviews you know I had neck cancer and difficult tasting some foods - they were accommodating in suggesting something for my taste. they even brought me a small plate of their suggested menu item for me to try. With the fantastic service and superb food and wonderful atmosphere this truly was an EXPERIENCE! WE truly felt like family. Can't wait to return. 10 stars from me.

We went here on a week night around 6 PM. Masks on of course and was quickly seated at a booth that was socially distanced from other occupied booths/tables. First the chips and salsa were brought. I do love their salsa with some spice but not a lot. The waiter appeared fairly quickly to take our drink orders. I ordered a frozen margarita which was really good as always while my partner had a margarita on the rocks also declared good. She asked for a small guacamole. The waiter brought the drinks, water and the requested guacamole which came in a small bowl and was delicious. For dinner I had the pollo al carbon which was huge with half of a chicken, beans, potatoes, onions, rice, guacamole and pico. My partner had the usual enchiladas San Antonio, two cheese enchiladas with chili meat sauce, beans and rice. The usual flour or corn tortillas accompanied the meal. Both plates were delicious and more than either of us could eat so to-go boxes were requested and we had the rest for lunch the next day. The waiter came by several times to see if everything was good and if we needed anything else. The meals were as good as what we had experienced at Mi Tierra downtown. This was not the first time we had been to this restaurant and grateful that the family had opened up a restaurant out close to our home. While they encourage you to use your smart phone to view the menu, they do provide a printed menu on a sheet of paper. We did manage to leave without a visit to the panaderia this time.

Had lunch here with a couple from our high school, almost 50 years removed from today. Okay, we’re old! That said, we were all equally impressed with the service, ambiance, and everything about our food choices. Mi Familia is not the cheap Mex that everyone continually seeks. However we judged it excellent in that everything about our visit was just that. We’re looking forward to returning soon.

We absolutely loved our dining experience here. The staff was lovely and the manager/owner from the Cortez family was so friendly. I love green chicken enchiladas… and these were the best I have ever had! My brother ordered the rib eye steak tampiquena (?) and loved that too! Tiny pricey.. but so worth it with those homemade flour tortillas which were perfect with the tasty queso fundido! Andele! Enjoy! Yum! Salsa great too… Service on spot! Enjoy!

There have been numerous unsuccessful restaurants in this building and I'm predicting this will also be a failed business. Much better Mexican food at better prices in this town - we won't be back!! We arrived here on a Saturday for lunch and were seated indoors immediately. Eddie was our terrific server! House margaritas were good! The salsa tasted like ketchup - UGH! Food was served fairly quickly. My chicken taco salad ($15) was slightly bigger than a side salad! The ranch dressing tasted weird and definitely not like any other ranch dressing I've eaten before. Hubby got 2 crispy tacos, beans and rice. He said he had eaten much better tacos.

We had some fajitas, tacos (soft and crisp) and some margaritas. Everything was delicious and the Margarita was OUTSTANDING. Lawrence was our waiter and he did a pretty good job.

excellent margarita, salsa, tortillas, beans & rice, mole, enchilada etc........in a city with many tremendous Mexican restaurants, I believe Mi Familia to be a cut above the rest. we are a group of 12. service and delivery is perfect. congratulations to the kitchen team, job well done. could have done without the mariachis - but hey.

So delicious and authentic. Wonderful vibe with mariachis. We had such a delicious breakfast that we went back for dinner.

With much anticipation, we have been awaiting Mi Tierra’s La Familia to open at the Rim. Sometimes making the trek downtown is just not on the agenda. It did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, the entire staff was super friendly and welcoming. The ambiance is festive, colorful and happy. I absolutely loved the colors they used for the decor. They have a smaller version of their downtown bakery, which was superb, with some additions for the market they are currently located in. The bar was adorable and quaint. The food....delicious. The service was excellent and attentive. This is a great restaurant for two but for groups, even better...as they have numerous items on the menu that are shareable and botanas. From what I could tell, they have all of classic offerings from their original menu, including one of my favorites, the campecano. I think I spelled that right. :) great experience and would definitely recommend! Hope they stick around as long as the original downtown location.

If you love Tex-Mex food, especially melted cheese (think gooey Velveeta) then this is the place for you. With a bright and cheery ambiance, the food is very good, but I made the mistake of trying the Queso Dip with my chips before ordering my meal ... my arteries began vibrating with the excessive cheese. Since my first visit, I learned never to order the over-iced and over-priced drinks, especially the margaritas. The combo plates are good but not economical, as one is paying for the location and vibrant ambiance. The service is good and if you have visitors in town and wanted a restaurant to celebrate the Mexican culture, I guess this is one option to take them, including the in-house bakery. This will save you atrip downtown.

Food is very tasty. Salsa is very good and the chicken enchilada plate is tasty and satisfying. Service was slow to get started but acceptable overall.

The facility and service were excellent. The food was average. The pralines in the bakery were the best.

My wife and I were visiting San Antonio and decided to have lunch at La Familia. Great choice. We have eaten at La Tierra (the original location by the same owners) several times. We’ve always enjoyed the ambience, and the food was very good but not the absolute best. La Familia is better in both respects. First, I must point out that the restaurant was pretty quiet, with (maybe) 15 patrons. I can imagine that it could be quite loud with a full house, so our experience may not be typical. More importantly, our meals were really excellent. My wife had 1/2 a roast chicken, which was beautifully cooked, and very moist. Seasoning was superb. I had the mole enchiladas. In my opinion, mole is one of the true indicators of the quality of a Mexican restaurant. It takes time to make it well. This mole was an 8 out of 10 for me. For reference, most I’ve tasted are 6 or below. The enchiladas themselves were generous with the shredded chicken. And one thing more...the refried beans are often an afterthought. Not so here. These were flavorful, light, and fluffy. I have special thanks for our server, Ramon. He bent over backwards to ensure that we had a great meal. Needless to say, I can’t comment on service by the staff when things are more rushed, but given the circumstances that I’ve described, it was flawless. Since we travel into San Antonio from the north, La Familia is perfectly located for us. We will be returning each time we visit. Highly recommended.

Had a wonderful surprise birthday party at Mi Familia last night. We were a large party of 30 and the accommodations were perfect! Managers, Daniel and J.C. were so attentive and made the evening so enjoyable. Our wait staff Paola and Mervin were fantastic! They handled the large crowd with complete composure. Overall a great experience!

We arrived and were told that there was a wait of at least 20 minutes. 5 minutes later we were seated. I had a pre-meal margarita and it was excellent. Our server was excellent and very attentive. The food was outstanding. We are from Louisiana where the Mexican food is good but nothing at home can compare with the meal we had at Mi Familia.

The restaurant is well done festive nicely decorated and clean Food was superb and the quality of all their wonderful restaurants Two recommendations Do not drag the cart of dirty dishes past the tables and second though I am used to the term educate your waitresses not to call the customers Ma Ma

Fifteen welcomed and seated for early supper in new restaurant with festive decor.. Orders varied from oysters to pork ribs and included traditional Cortez family recipes and regional Mexican specialties. Service was cordial and thorough. Everyone seemed pleased with the food. A water spill did not disrupt and was cleared promptly. Full bar and Happy Hour. Plus, there is a variety of bakery goods.
2020 New Decade, New Year, New Start
There were only 2 of us so the wait was only about 40 minutes. Those with a larger party of 6 or more had to wait at least an hour or so before they were seated. The atmosphere is so fiestive and energetic it was awesome. You could dress up or as casual as you like. Our waitress was wonderful and so attentive. The mariachis were fantastic and didn't hound over you asking if you wanted a song. The menu was pricy but i guess it makes up for not having to fight the downtown traffic and pay for parking. Will be back with family next time!
