I went here with my family for a nice New Year's eve dinner, and we were not disappointed. We have visited several times before and have always enjoyed trying a new type or new grade of sushi - this trip was no exception. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the service was attentive and friendly. Pros - good nigiri, unique appetizers and rolls, nice sake selection, takes reservations Cons - dim lighting and higher prices (compared to similar establishments)

Lunch Special!!! and Snow Crab Roll :)

Face it .. Great sushi is fresh sushi. Sushi is expensive ! Their happy hour is Austin's best buy sushi. You can't go wrong here.

Mikado competes with one or two other Japanese restaurants in the Austin area, but Mikado excels in having a comfortable, quiet not-squeezed-in setting. Being able to relax, take your time and enjoy very good sushi and be able to converse is not the experience one gets in the crowded, wait for a jammed-in-table experience at its competitors. Not cheap, but the combination of always good sushi and a comfortable setting makes it worth the short drive from downtown.

I've been here for the lunch special bento box. Ordered the salmon teriyaki which includes miso soup and a salad ( Ive never liked a salad so much. The sauce they use was delicious) and rice and four pieces of a roll and fruit and an egg roll AND a pot sticker. Yep, all of that. Its excellent quality food and a steal for $11! Service is excellent and its a great restaurant. Will be back for a dinner to try their sashimi and nigiri.

Stopped in thinking we'd be disappointed. Were we wrong! Everything was very fresh, and the service was superb. We had one small wait while the waitress got our beer. Other than that, we barely had time to finish a dish before she swooped in and grabbed the empty plates. The gyoza was a little soft for our tastes, but no one makes gyoza crunchy like we make it at home. But it had a good flavor. The miso was better than I've eaten anywhere in the last few years. If I could change anything it would be to turn off the annoying techno-pop playing in the background. Maybe they borrowed tunes from Oilcan Harry's.

My wife and I and our friends eat here every opportunity we have when we want the best sushi in Austin. The food is amazing, staff is professional and attentive and the price is fair for the quality. We always sit at the sushi bar and the sushi chefs frequently surprise you with something they create.

It just doesn't get better than Mikado. I learned to enjoy sushi in NYC where there a sushi bar on every corner and the best other than Tokyo and Mikado is just as good. AWESOME SUSHI.

It was my daughter's birthday and she selected the Mikado in Austin for dinner. We arrived with her new baby in an infant carrier and her 2 year old and waited in the foyer. There was no one at the desk, but a man was sitting at a table folding napkins and just watched us and continued folding. I looked around and saw several other diners at tables being waited on in the distance. We waited about 4 to 5 minutes for a receptionist or manager to arrive...still the waiter continued folding napkins. Finally, I walked into the next room and approached his table and asked if he worked there? Why, yes...do you want a table? (We were the only people in the foyer and were looking at him all this time). He took us to a booth which had only one place setting. My daughter wanted to order quickly, since her son was hungry. We looked at the menu and she ordered a few things for her son...he then, interrupted her and asked me what I wanted. I stated that she was not finished ordering. When she completed her orders, I gave him my order and she asked for a fork, etc. when he returned. He brought drinks and one fork...and I shared there was not enough place settings at the table and he rudely replied, there's enough for the adults! I looked around for the manager and sensed my daughter did not want me having a, "frank discussion," with the manager on her birthday...so, I bit my tongue and began focussing on her son's plate and helping him eat. The sushi came and I must admit everything was pretty good, food, atmosphere, appetizers, ...but this waiter's rudeness and sarcasm and attitude sucked all the air out of this room...which was intended to be a happy occasion. Later, another waitress saw our empty glasses and asked to fill them...sensing his lack of professionalism, he displayed. I don't know if he was bored with his job or had other severe issues...but, I will not return based on his attitude and poor service. It is a shame, due to the good food...

You must try: Snow Crab Crisp Maki Chorishi's Fire roll and Spicy Crawfish roll

Sushi here was pretty good. I got a spicy tuna roll and a rock ‘n roll piece as well. At lunch the prices are reasonable at $13 for two rolls. If I eat here again, I’d get it to go as there was an unpleasant smell at the entrance. Also, we had to wait a good amount of time for our lunch and we were there before the lunch rush.

Found this place on Yelp in NW Austin where there aren't too many options. I went on a very slow Thursday night when the main restaurant was virtually empty but there was apparently a fairly large party of japanese people in a private room, which is usually a good sing of good sushi. Since I was alone I sat at the sushi bar where I could interact with and watch the sushi chef. They have a very noce selcetion of rolls, nigiri and sashimi with specials listed on the board at the front. Sushi was very good and very well presented, service form the sushi chef and his assistant was very good but my waiter was hit or miss. Overall a very nice dinner, maybe a little pricy but good sushi is worth it.

We are in the area and decided to give this place a try. It is fine. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. There was a strong smell of bleach cleaner so we moved from one side of the restaurant to the other. We ordered edamame as we were pretty hungry and it didn't come before our sushi so we told them to kill it. How is it that a starter doesn't come out before a huge sushi order? Sushi was fine, we did chef choice and it was primarily tuna and salmon. Price was average for sushi. There are better sushi places in Austin.

Good food but overpriced. Rude waitstaff and generic Denny's like setup. Irrasyiamase welcome! But then you sit in a crowded generic table setting.

Who would've thought Austin would be a hot spot for sushi, but that seems to be the case these days with the attention placed on restaurants like Uchi. Mikado is a lesser known option, but the quality of food is pretty high -- without the long waits or pricey tab at the end.

We went for lunch, and although the service was quite slow, it was polite and did it’s best to help. Yes, the food is great. The sashimi is not the best I’ve had, but is OK. The maki roll were super, and the miso the best I’ve had. Portions are generous. But in the end I felt robbed when I got hit with a $30 bill (for a weekday lunch), and it makes the 5th point go away. The place was quite empty, and maybe it is because of the mismatch between location (average mall on Research blvd) and price.

very very nice for causal to formal dining! Cooked food and sushi all in one!

This restaurant is tucked into what looks like a business park so it's easy to miss, but the atmosphere is so nice once inside, perfect for a family dinner or get-together with friends. My friend's mother is full Japanese and she was pleased (after endlessly questioning our server about the food, what patience that man had!). All of the rolls we tried were excellent. The Nigiri is fresh and tender, best I've had and reasonably priced. I would pass on the Shrimp tempura because there was only 1 shrimp in it! Just get the vegetable one and save $3. The seafood Udon was full of fresh vegetables and seafood, couldn't finish it we got so many things. Can't wait to go again and try more Nigiri and various rolls!

I had the pleasure of going to Mikado today for lunch. It is located in a strip mall near the corner of 183 and Mopac (just off Braker I think). We were in a hurry and we loved the fact the service was both polite and very fast. The menu is extensive. Something for everyone, even non sushi lovers. There are many great lunch specials. I don't like rice with my sushi and the Austin roll fit the bill perfectly. A delicious roll with three types of seafood wrapped in cucumber and served with ponzu sauce. Perfect for the summer heat. I also had a seaweed salad which was pretty basic but delicious. Much of the fish is flown in from Hawaii and the freshness and quality really shows. Our server was fantastic, stopping to inquire about our meals and very prompt when I asked for extra ginger. I would highly recommend this spot for lunch if you are in the north side of town. And I am sure it is great for dinner too.

Tucked away in a strip center is this Japanese tapas type restaurant. We first started coming shortly after it opened and it quickly became a favorite for us. We had our engagement dinner there in the beautiful private room, and subsequently celebrated several wedding anniversaries. We moved to a different part of town and it had been a couple of years since we last came and decided to see if it was still as good.We know it has since been sold 1 or 2 times more. Service was excellent. Menu was nice they continue to serve some of the original dishes, food was good.

Pricey in the evening, and worth it. But try Mikado at lunch for some great deals. A filling sushi bento for $15 is a steal for this level of quality.

Last night I took my wife for a nice romantic dinner. We live in S Austin and she'd never been to Mikado. We were north so I took her here, after I had not been in 10 years. But, Mark still owns the place, he's as friendly and involved as ever, and the quality is still superior. He spoke with us at our table and explained that as fresh fish comes in you can order off-menu and his chefs will prepare meals special. The escolar was thick and oily with roasted garlic. Our rolls were large and delicious. The ambience of the restaurant is subdued and comfortable. 10 years was too long to deny myself this dining enjoyment and I'm thrilled it's still there. We'll be making the drive to dine there regularly now that I've been reminded and my wife has been introduced.

Mikado has a great happy hour including many of their popular sushi dishes. We tried just about everything on the menu and it was all excellent. I'm not a big umi w/ quail egg fan, but it was tasty also. Others in my party that enjoy it, liked Mikado's presentation. They also have a nice selection of American micro brews and European beers. Will definitely return in the future.

This was my second visit to Mikado Ryotei and I was again impressed by the quality of food. All the items we ordered were fresh and extremely well prepared. Even though Mikado is certainly amongst the best Japanese restaurants in Austin, it doesn't have the over-the-top chic look of some of the newer Japanese restaurants that try to impress more with décor than the food. Mikado has a quiet atmosphere, with very attentive and polite staff, and serves excellent Japanese food. The price is also much more competitive than the fancy ones mushrooming everywhere.

Great sushi, doesn't get overbooked/overfull like the other two good places here

I have to say. This place was Amazing. We made reservations for 8pm for a booth. When we arrived, we decided to sit at the sushi bar, and they had no problem accommodating us. My first impression of the place was good. The low light room with a quiet tone, gave the place a welcoming romantic feel. Our Waiter, Keith, promptly arrived at our table, and served us water, which for me is a big deal. He then recommended a Pineapple Sake that was infused in house that was not on the menu. It was smooth and naturally sweet. We then started with some appetizers. Each dish was delicious and unique. The dishes do take a while to come out, but that is the general idea of Tapas. We were there for the long haul anyway, so we didn't mind waiting. We then moved onto Sushi. One of the Sushi Chefs, Mike, gave us a run through of some of his favorite rolls. They prepared the sushi in front of us, and engaged in some good chatter. Our rolls were well prepared and beautifully subtle. We then asked Mike to challenge us with a spicy roll. He then made a custom roll that was spicy and delicate. Throughout our night, both our waiter and our sushi Chef checked in on us and made us feel welcomed. The Owner, Mark, Even came over to talk with us, and made sure our experience was good. The entire time we were there we felt as though we were special guests in their place. At the very end, the owner payed for a couple of our drinks, and while heading out, shook our hands and thanked us for coming in. Overall, I could not have asked for a better experience. I do not get the chance to go out as often as I use to, so when i get to go to a place like this, it makes me feel like it was completely worth my while. I will definitely be back!

This is the place I went to for my first "sushi" experience! Being a novice, i was skeptical about eating "raw" fish. However, by the end of my meal, I was a true "Sushi Lover". I have been back many times since then. Their sushi rolls come out so beautiful and inviting and with each bite, your mouth gets a burst of flavor begging for more! My favorite roll is "Ben's Roll" and I think it's named for the chef who created it. It's huge and worth every bite. They also have a lunch Bento Box lunch with several choices and the one I love is the Sea Bass in Mirin. It's a fresh Chilean sea bass filet marinated in Matsuken Sake and pan grilled. It's cooked perfectly and is so light. It comes with salad, gyoza, california roll and rice. They also have wonderful desserts. The ambiance in this place is very relaxing and enjoyable. You would have a great culinary experience here.

I love their Udon Noodles and the Calamari and every thing else is great! Its a very nice atmosphere and the service is very good!

Very good service and variety, food presentation is also very good and the prices are reasonable. Happy hour menus is very good.

The sushi was outstanding and authentic as was the sushimi. Service was attentive and very professional. Our second visit there and it was consistent both times. The owner made several visits to check on us.

This restaurant is a real treat and a good choice for a group because the menu has something great for all tastes. You essentially get multiple menus: traditional Japanese entrees, Japanese salads, exquisite Japanese tapas and wonderful sushi(raw and cooked). My wife and I usually order five items from the multiple menus and then share them. We have taken many friends to Mikado and all loved the experience.

Have been coming here for bday parties for 10yrs now, always the same Thurs every year & up to a usual crowd of 30 guests! Food is great as always, but this year we were treated horribly by one of the hostesses! We have had this reservation for months, we walked the facility on May 17 & took pics with the owner Mark escorting us around the restaurant because of new construction, we have also kept him informed via email. Host even called the day before and Mark (owner) said he was worried about the theme, so we toned it down. And, he was worried about the amount of people- 27 so we lowered it to 20, & actually only 18 showed up! We listened to what they asked! 6 of us even ordered early on before the party, so less stress on waiters due to it being a group party! Party went great, nothing wild, in fact NO KIDS or anything too wild this year. (previous yrs were definitely more!) Guests left & we helped to clean up as usual for every year! Hostess made several rude comments during & throughout, even had guests leave early due to her attitude. We brushed it off & never stooped to her level. We said 'thank you' as we left & she even stated 'not welcome' on our way out! Another waiter taking trash out started talking to us outside (a waiter we know & love), the hostess came out to purposely interfere. She then proceeded to follow us & harass us in the pkng lot! She even had the audacity to mention they’re not ‘slaves’ because a little food spilled… in a restaurant! (Video posted online!) **NOT acceptable for ANY business to treat anyone this way!!!

Pleasant setting, good service, beautiful bento box presentation. Way too much teriyaki sauce on everything!

We stopped by for a light dinner and found the decor of the restaurant to be very inviting. Lots of dark woods and very comfortable furniture. When we arrived, they were still doing a happy hour and we found everything we wanted off the happy hour menu. Things arrived quickly and they all tasted great. we would not hesitate to come back.

Sister and I were both craving some good sushi. So, of course we turned to TripAdvisor for a suggestion. We were so happy we did. We made it there in time to take advantage of happy hour savings. Ordered sushi, rolls, and the mushroom soup. I have never had a mushroom soup that good. It was out of this world delicious! Service was incredible! Any questions we had Mark was there to answer. Can’t wait to go back!

I visited Mikado on a recent visit to Texas with two friends, on a Sunday for their all day Sunday Happy Hour! The atmosphere is great, well decorated and clean. Music playing set on a fun vibe in the place. We were quickly seated by the friendly hostess. We all ordered drinks, Pineapple Sake, Beer, Sake Bomb. I recommend the Pineapple Sake, light and refreshing, unless you are looking to get a good buzz in which case go for the Sake Bomb, It's a large beer and a lot of Sake! We ordered 3 rolls off the Happy Hour menu, the ones we got were $10 each, which were the most expensive rolls on the happy hour menu The Shaggy Dog, Hottie Susan & Chorishi’s Fire. Also the crab puffs. The crab puffs came up first, just like crab rangoons from a Chinese restaurant, they came with a sauce that i've always called yum yum sauce, really tasty! The Sushi rolls came out and the presentation was great! All 3 rolls were super tasty! The Hottie Susan was the simplest spicy tuna & cucumber topped with salmon, avocado & spicy mayo. If you like spicy Tuna or salmon rolls you should try this! It was really very good, and nothing too crazy on top. The Shaggy Dog was tempura shrimp & avocado topped with crab stick, crunchy flakes, eel sauce & spicy mayo, the presentation on this is neat because the crab stick is in thin peices draped over the roll with crunchy flakes on top, like a shaggy dog lol. It was a really good roll, definitely not simple but tasty! Chorishi’s Fire had tempura shrimp & avocado Topped with spicy tuna, masago, scallion, crunchy flakes & spicy mayo. This was the most spicy and if I had to chose this or the shaggy dog i'd pick this. i really like the masago (roe) Yum!

Dirty, sticky table and floors, inattentive service, but food was good. Overall skip and go to Ichiban just about 2 miles up he road on Burnet instead! Much better food, much, much, much, much, much better service and CLEAN!!! - - Mikado was DIRRRRRRRTY, and the server was "courteous", but very inattentive. :(

Food was delish. I️ ordered the shrimp tempura lunch meal and everything was great. I️ ordered a mixed drink and it was also delish. This place never disappoints. They have a new menu with vegetarian options which is super awesome!

Mikado never disappoints . . . with the prix fixe menu for lunch (about 6 options) . . . the food is always fresh and good.

Another great experience at Mikado. The ambiance is lovely, dark, clubby, romantic. Personally, I think is the best sushi in Austin and we've tried a bunch of places. The chef's specialties change daily and are always fun to try. The superwhite tuna with mango served in a martini glass was excellent. I like the unique presentations that the chef's come up with. The spicy scallop maki was so good...mmmm...Everything we have tried has always been so fresh and delicious. I can hardly wait to go back for my next sushi fix!

My husband and I are HUGE fans of Mikado. It has been our go-to sushi spot for over 8 years now. The Hottie Susan is my very, very favorite but I have never had anything that I didn't love. Oh, and the owner, Mark, is super nice.

A very creative menu where each dish is a great pleasant surprise. The theme is boca style dishes that can be shared by all. Very nicely prepared and an incredible value for the money. Great location to wind down after a busy day on the road or at work

I had a variety of suchi and appetizers. Service was good and food was prepared artistically and tasted great.

Rockin' sushi bar, and restuarant.

I absolutely love Mikado for the ambiance, the freshness of the sushi and for the service. Last weekend my boyfriend and I went to Mikado, it's a tradition of ours to go during ACL to get away from the crowded restaurants. When we arrived, we asked for the drink menu and the waitress said that they had just switched management and were waiting for the Alcohol License that had expired. She offered a drink coupon for our next visit if we stayed. We thought about it for a second and then asked if we could bring our own wine inside. She said sure, so we were off to Spec's! We purchased 2 bottles of fantastic Napa Chardonnay and Mikado kept them chilled while we ate. We ordered miso soup and a negihama roll for starters. The roll was a perfect start to a meal. We then ordered 4 pieces of salmon, 2 pieces of escolar and a chef inspired fish liver (not my favorite). We also had an unagi roll...so good. We asked the manager to sit at our table to share some wine with us and he was such a delight. I would highly recommend this restaurant to all of our friends. But, don't forget to call first to see if they've gotten their license. If not, BYOB...which is awesome!

Five stars for this one. I'm probably one of the few people left on earth who really could care less about Sushi and other Japanese dishes but my son and dauhter-in-law loves the stuff so they decided to try this place along with myself and my wife. Being the nice guy I am I agreed to go. My son started ordering off the menu, appetizers, Japanese beer (for me) Saki (which I've never had) and then the entrees for all of us. (I gave my menu to him because it was all Greek to me). By the time we had finished the appetizers I was pretty much done but then came the entrees. The Sushi was absolutely incredible as were the other things. (Can't remember everything we had). Now back to the appetizers. My wife and I had ordered the mushroom soup and let me tell you, I could eat that everyday! Super good and flavorful. It's a definite must have on my list. So, all in all, when we go back to Austin, this will be on our list.. Enjoy!

We had the unaju (eel) bento box and the chirashi lunch. The eel was all right, but it didn't have the unctiousness of really good eel. The amount of food was ample for the bento, not just the eel, but the accompanying salad, soup, 4 pieces of sushi roll, 2 pork dumplings and vegetables served with the eel. I would try something different next time. The chirashi had a good amount of fresh fish, but I prefer a chirashi with many different types of fish. Mikado Ryotei's has duplicate pieces of the same fish instead.

Fantastic decor with even better sushi. The Snow Crab Maki and Chorishi's Fire roll are not to be missed!

i love this place. Wonderful service, killer sushi, and great dishes as well.
Dangerously warm sushi bad place.
There were flies around the restaurant. The sushi came and it was warm to the touch, and appeared to be sweating. The sushi chefs kept the sushi case doors open as they worked and talked for several minutes. There was no condensation on any of the sushi glass cases, even after the doors were open for a good 10 to 15 minutes. If you have a elderly person or person with a compromised immune system. Do not go to this place, mikados.
