Soul food at it's best!

By Gr8TavelM8 |

Ok, it's located in a strip mall, doesn't have fancy surroundings and has a few things like Kool-Aid on the menu that are a bit different, but it doesn't matter one bit when you smell the air, check out the food and dive in! Meals are laid out like a cafeteria - you select your meat/fish, then the side dishes and lastly, dessert and your drink. This is one of my brother's favorite spots and now it will be one I'll ask to go back to when visiting Houston. OMG - grandma's cooking at the best and staff that are like family.

Great food at a great price

By Flaco C |

Lucked into this place while at the Hilton North. It's cafeteria style but the service was very friendly. A good selection of dishes and I chose the tilapia alfredo which was very good. The portions were large enough that I had to struggle to finish. Next time I'm in this part of Houston will try to get back to try some of the other dishes.

Ladies & Gentlemen if you’re not concerned about calories, cholesterol, & portions go dig in ! If you don’t mind a little wait (line) the Food is very fulfilling, & if you have room you’ll want dessert preferably peach cobbler.

Authentic Soul Food

By Rhetta |

Authentic Soul Food. Friends took me here. They give you a lot on your plate. I had catfish with Mac n cheese, collard greens and a side order of oxtails. The oxtails were flavorful and tender.

I ordered ox tails for $12.75 which is the most expensive dish on the menu, the portion for the oxtails was poor lots of small l

By sbompart |

I ordered the oxtails which was the most expensive meal on their menu" They were generous with the sides, but gave me very little meat there were bones on my plate, I felt cheated I did not get my money 's worth I will not be going back to Mimi's soul cafe. I will cook my own oxtails. .

Food for the soul

By SUPslr |

Good food mid-range kind of pricey menu varies per day my favorite day to go is on Sunday I don't eat pork but occasionally I'll go for chitterlings they have two lines one for dining and one for to go staff is friendly and helpful this is my number one pick out of all the soul food restaurants in Houston must go

Amazing.....

By Annette P |

Food was absolutely amazing.... Staff was super friendly. It was our first time there and we will definitley be back!

The best soul food ever.... period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By SaltwaterTom |

The absolute best braised steak and gravy, mashed potatoes, greens, yams, and you name it, they got it. The portions are enormous, so one meal will easily feed at least two people. Heart healthy? Of course not. But that's not why you go for soul food, is it?

Houston's Neighborhood Soul Food Gem!

By Precious89 |

A friend of mine suggested that I try the soul food at Mikki's Soul Food Cafe and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed! I ordered a Kids meal which consisted of one entree, and two sides. It was more than enough food for me because I get full quickly. I ordered the meatloaf with green beans and cornbread dressing. The dressing reminded me of my mother's. The green beans tasted as if they were from a can, but well-seasoned. The meal was worth the $9 I paid for it.

Lighten Up on the SALT!

By Tourist33626573689 |

The Houston location's food has lost some of it's deliciousness. Whoever the new cook is uses TOO MUCH salt in dishes thatbonce was perfectly seasoned. I got meat loaf on 1 visit and it was so salty I could not eat it all. On my next visit I got spaghetti with meat sauce and it too was salty. The greens and green beans also had a bit much salt. Someone should discuss with the cook at this location their use of seasoning in the food they prepare.

Loved this soulfood!

By tish1617 |

Friend flew in from Iowa wanting soul. Everything looked amazing and what I ordered really was! Fried catfish. The dressing was so good! 😋 Candied yams and greens were great too! We will be back.

Downhome cooking

By geedbee |

Oh My Goodness, this food was soooooo good! The restaurant is located on a strip mall so you would pass it by and never know it. However, it is worth a stop in, especially if you want some soul food. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately and the staff was very helpful in helping us decide what to get. There were pork chops, chicken fried chicken, beef steak and so much more and with every main selection, there were three sides. Soooo much food. It takes a while to decide what you want because everything looks good. The one thing I did not like it that the black eyed peas were well seasoned, but they were a little dry for my taste, I like for there to be a little liquid with my black eyed peas so that the liquid from the peas helps flavor the rice. it was hard to mix up the rice with the beans, but like I said, they were well seasoned. The macaroni and cheese, I would have liked to me a little creamier. It was tasty though. The "complaints" I have are simply a matter of preference, not taste, because the taste was there in all of the food, I just prefer that food to be fixed a certain way; however, that did not take away from my enjoyment of the food. The greens were nice a just a little spicy. There was red and purple kool-aid. Prepare for sugar shock because that was real Kool-Aid!! of course there were sodas and lemon aide to drink but there is not much better with soul food than Kool-Aid. There was so much food that we had some to take home and eat for dinner. Food for two and drinks was $30. Everyone on the staff was very attentive and made you feel very comfortable.

Oxtails need more meat

By Mike60984 |

Had lunch today with the oxtails and rice and gravy with 2 veggies and tea. The food was good however I felt cheated with the amount of meat given. It was on the small side and oxtails are the most expensive entree at 12.75. I would recommend getting the beef plate or pork chops instead. You will get more meat. Also I am not sure if tea refills are free. I thought the taste was good but felt a little shortchanged on the food. For that reason nothing here pulls me back.

Food is Good /Service is slow

By TVMATheTea |

I brought my sister in law here for the 1st time. Unfortunately, we had tsome issues We had to ask for our drinks to be brought to our table 4 times & have our table cleaned. The poor guy bringing the drinks was also the bus boy, usher. It's no wonder he forgot. While driving down on my southern mashed potatoes & Smothered pork chops, I found a plastic milk top in my mashed potatoes, ...Nooooo, 😣 my mouth was watering for this meal after a long drive from Corpus Christi. Whats a girl to do? The only tjing you can. Bring it back and let them fix the order again. This place stays so packed. After all, that top incident has happened to be the best of us. Fix the service, you're easily a 5. Will I come again?..My plate should say it all. I couldn't finish my meal, & it was good.

Mikki Soul Food

I wanted to try soul food so with friends we went to try out Mikki Soul Food. Meal was great from the rice to the links and the cornbread. Wasn't crazy about the greens otherwise great food. Service was ok

Welcome to Pearland!!

By Sue Y |

So glad they finally opened the location in Pearland. We drove by at least twice a week until they opened. The food is very good and would be called comfort food in my world. I was surprised when the manager explained that several of the veggies were seasoned with turkey instead of pork, I couldn't taste a difference. Now I can be healthy and love the taste of my meal. The beverage service was really slow.

The best soul food in Houston I drive all the way from Humble to Mikki's it's worth it. I will drive when I know it's good

Down home delicious

By Nancy S |

This low-key, friendly cafe serves huge portions (cafeteria style) of some "to-die-for" goodness. I had the baked tilapia (spicy but not fiery), greens and sweet potatoes. Every meal comes with a large piece of scrumptious corn bread. My friend had come planning to eat fried chicken but fried chicken and fish are only available on the weekends. Instead she had meat loaf, greens and some amazing macaroni & cheese. Everything was perfectly seasoned and appetite satisfying, so come hungry!!

Great Soul Food And Friendly Staff

By vaquero viajero |

Based on Yelp reviews we pulled into Mikki's while passing through Houston. It was fantastic soul food served cafeteria style. We had fried pork chops, mashed potatoes with gravy, black eyed peas, collard greens and mac and cheese. Everything was great and tasted very fresh and juice despite the cafeteria style service. The best thing was the mac and cheese, possibly the best that I have ever had. The portions are large so come with an apatite or maybe a teenage boy. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The restaurant is clean and comfortable but without any pretense or fluff. Lots of families were eating there and many people came in for take out.

Your plate will over flow with all kinds of soul food .

By Meemee05 |

The prices are reasonable and the variety of foods on the menu are amazing. We had spaghetti, pork chops, chitterlings, chicken, fish, all kinds of veggies.Yes, your plate will overflow. The desserts were great. This family friendly restaurant is always our favorite place to eat when we go to Houston,Texas.

Stopped by for the Meatloaf!!!

By Johnny M |

Food is always delicious! whether it be the meatloaf, Chicken, or Ox tails. Everything is homemade! The Jalapeno corn bread is one of my favorites. Always a pleasant experience with the staff.

Love this food

By Jaricaor |

Cornbread with jalapeño, either the oxtails or the ribs, the veggies are good to. The food is great the ambiance could be better but it may loose the originality

Mikki's is an OMG place to eat

By jwsmith105 |

I'm somewhat new to Houston but I've been to Mikki's 4 or 5 times now. Every time I come the staff is EXTREMELY helpful. My cousins can get a bit particular but they always handle each request with patience and great service. On my last visit I brought my mother who sat in the car on our last visit. She was blown away by the number of people inside (hence, why I wanted her to wait in the car) but I wanted her to experience the atmosphere for herself. She's 87 and we're both from Detroit, where we're picky about our soul food restaurants, but she admitted Mikki's is the best she's seen...hands down (and we've traveled all over Houston to compare). And despite the crowd they didn't try and skimp on the portions. Prices are reasonable. Food is delicious. Staff is pleasant (and I commend them every time I come). One drawback...I don't know when or how they intend to get it done , but expansion is inevitable. I'd invest if asked. The model is excellent, the food great, the service superb. What's not to like?

Good Country Eating

By Angelairene22 |

Brings Back Memories of Grandma's Sunday Dinner

By jello_2001 |

TIP: If you want Carryout they have a shorter separate line in the room to the left that has the exact same offerings as the eat-in line in front of the door. If you eat-in, they have free carry-out containers and bags on a table along the center wall for leftovers. ************* My husband loves this place. The BBQ pork chops are his favorite. I like the baked chicken with dressings, sweet potatoes and greens. My sons like the fried chicken and green beans. One of them had kook-aid for the first time there and thought it was the GREATEST!!! Lol! My husband would drink their peach tea daily if they lived closer. And I agree, it is really good. I thought the breading on their catfish was not the best.i actually disliked it and had better at Golden Coral. But considering how everything else taste, I will try it one more time to see if that was a fluke. Their Mac and cheese is not baked like grandma's version, but it is creamy/cheesy and stil tasty. Their German chocolate cake was delicious but I have had better...my own so I am biased. HOWEVER... Their sweet potato pie deserves an award. It may not be the best I have ever eaten. but as far as a restaurant is comcerned, it is one of the best basic sweet potato pirs that I have had from an establishment. It has a nice flavor and I could have taken an entire pie home. My husband ate half and he is not a lover of the sweet potato. So you must try at least once. The people who assist with drinks were very friendly and it is an overall nice establishment in a safe area.

Food for the Soul

By mejetta |

I traveled across town to dine at Micki's! They have the best oxtail in the city. (my opinion) the green beans, with OR without meat pieces are just delicious. Now I regret to add to this review, some of the server's are not the most pleasant, but if you can get beyond that, Great Food.

Mikki's Cafe "NORTH HOUSTON" Location

By photohistorians |

On my last visit home I stopped at this new spot. I'd heard the south side location was good but never been. I will say this location was nice, clean, the staff was very friendly and helpful in choosing a great meal! I was very impressed with the amount of food given and the great price! When I visit home I will make sure to revisit.

Soul Food for everyone

By deez t |

Great Food, Great people and service and the amount. One of the best Ox tales I have had around town. their Mac and Cheese is a heart attack waiting to happen, so it's that good. Try all their sides at least once, especially the Greens. Wish they would open one on the west side. I travel far and wide to eat there. Come early cause they do run out of food at times.

Horrible Customer service

By Pretty D |

While me & my family was eating...one of the workers reaching over my daughter's plate while replacing napkins... no excuse me.. no waiting till we done just in our way.... Very unsanitary if you ask me...idc who thinks differently.... that's disgusting... secondly she started to sweep in my section even the people in the back of me started to look around like why is she doing this while we eating??? They left.. and I don't blame them... all the manager said was she didn't mean nothing by it & said she would talk with her... ok she may not BUT it's unsanitary no matter how you look at it..if workers can't wait till the customers is FINISH to clean or sweep makes it a nasty place.... won't be going back to that location ever again...

HOUSTON'S BEST SOUL FOOD

By 5StarLuxuryTraveler |

The BEST IN HOUSTON! They are Opening a New Location on the Northside of Houston on Greens Road closer to George Bush Airport (IAH)

Friendly staff

By Jazzgal67 |

I met a bus driver who recommended that my trip to Houston would not be complete without a trip to Mikki's Cafe for soul food. There were many options, such as oxtails, turkey necks in gravy and chitterlings. This Brooklyn girl kept it simple with fried chicken, red beans, macaroni and cheese and cornbread. It was an average meal, well seasoned and tasty, but not better than Amy Ruth's in Harlem. The peach cobbler was really good. The staff was courteous which made this a nice experience.

Soul food

By tylice m |

Visiting from out of town. The fried chicken was good, along with the baked macaroni and cheese and collard greens. The kool aid was the best way to wash down my food. This is a place you should try if visiting from out in town.

New Pearland Location

By Eric H |

I’ve been going to this soul food restaurant for years and it never disappoints. They have daily specials and array of entrees and sides. This is a great place to have a Sunday dinner after church or lunch. The portions are great and the deserts are superb. I am so grateful they have a Pearland TX location now!

Uncooked meal

By Desi D |

Let me start by saying I always supportive this restaurant but today was my last. I ordered a fried turkey with sides the sides where good but the turkey was uncooked. I followed the directions and baked it in the oven for a total of 1 hour and it was raw. I called and sent a message with a picture of the raw turkey. Shantell apologize agreeing the turkey was raw and saying she don’t know how it got like that. I told her I prefer a refund which she stated she would honored that. Upon arrival I talked with one of her staff which he was very polite but the ghetto one with the braids was very rude about me wanting a refund. Yes I only wanted cash after my thanksgiving turkey was ruined. But through shantell eyes I was causing a scene only because she didn’t wanted other customers to know she is serving uncooked food. I shouldn’t have to wait 3 to 5 days to get my money back. I’m quite sure I’m not the only one got a very raw turkey. Picture speak for its self.

Amazing!!!

By tvlady911 |

Amazing! I can't stress how amazing this place is. Visited while on vacation and wanted to eat here every day. At some point we had baked chicken, steak with gravy, dressing, greens, yams, oxtails etc. Nothing was lacking in flavor. The portion sizes were large enough to share. It was well worth the price. I thought my grandmother was in the kitchen.

Dose not answer phone

By dalton t |

With the meals I purchased I was supposed to receive 6 side items but only received 4. When I paid the cashier she was laughing it up with a friend on the phone instead of paying attention to the customers in front of her. When I called back to informed them of the missing vegetable,No one would answer the phone, day or night for several days. I kept getting the answering machine. They can keep the side item and I'll keep my business.

"Sunday Best"

By Jerri215 |

This is the next best thing to good country cooking in the city. Oxtails, greens, yams, turkey & dressing, mac and cheese just to name a few of their items and I am so glad they added the regular baked chicken with out gravy. The line service is fast. They always give me more than enough food. Staff is nice and friendly!!!

When his wife is there, the food is THE BOMB. When she is on vacation, it ain't the same but still good.

By Crystal S |

When his wife is there, the food is THE BOMB. When she is on vacation, it ain't the same but still good.

taste great but portions small

By just g |

portions are way to small for a $20 plate of oxtails depending on who working all workers should give same portion worth the price

Good soul food

By Amy |

My husband and I have eaten here several times. Ample parking, good service, good prices. Ambience is okay. Not where you go to if you are looking for romantic setting or if you are particular about great ambience. The blackened fish and oxtail are my favorite. Good soul food all round. Decent prices.

This is a great spot for soulfood/country cooking. They also have REAL HOMEMADE banana pudding from scratch like your grandmother made. The beef steak, greens, candied yams and macaroni-n-cheese was great also, but the banana pudding was the best.

This is definitely a must go to restaurant. The menu is down home comfort food. Everything is very delicious. The staff very friendly and attentive. Definitely worth the trip. You will not be disappointed.

Soul Food!

By Luv2dryv |

If you're looking for a good and traditional soul food meal, this is the place. They've got all the basics: fried chicken, candied yams, greens, baked mac/cheese....Plus daily specials. The food is good, portions are generous. In short, this place is everything you'd expect from a soul food restaurant. I highly recommend!

Well seasoned.

By Terrell C |

I came to visit my daughter in SW Houston. I wanted soul food. This place has a large variety. Everything was well seasoned. The plate was well proportional. I had oxtails, cabbage, rice, and mashed potatoes. My daughter had baked talipia, collards, green beans, and mashed potatoes. They were nice and explained how this meat and three worked. I will definitely come back.

OmG

The only reason why this place is still open is because the food is decent!! If the health inspector walked in it would be closed. The customer service sucks, but the food is good!!

Better than Mom's!

By Linda G |

A friend of mine from work took me to Mikki's for a birthday lunch; it was awesome! I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, broccoli, and candied yams. The candied yams were better than my mom's! All of the food was good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely return!

Food was cold service was extremely poor

By Lashonbnbbvcfxd... S |

Service was horrible server was rude older black lady just slapping food on the plate as if were non paying customers.Food was unacceptable was not worth the long ride from Katy.

It's soul food...

By pinstryper |

I love soul food.I was a regular at "This is It" when it was on Grey. After returning to Houston it had relocated near U of H and left its mojo behind. Finding Mikkis was nice. I had the stuffed pepper special, good not great. Really large portion (2) though. Will return to try it again and maybe rate it higher. .MMM

The food was very bland...

By E L |

The food was very bland. Don't try the smothered pork chops.

Great food

By roxyrocks84 |

This restaurant is cafe style and you go in a line and pick out what you want. I ordered the oxtail with rice, mac and cheese and collard greens. I also ordered the white chocolate bread pudding and raspberry ice tea. All the food was delicious! It was a lot of food so I actual took half of it home. The bread pudding was good but I also tasted the peach cobbler and that was sooo good! The raspberry tea tasted like kool-aid.

The ham hock was hard to eat.

By tomball65 |

The ham hock was to hard to eat that cook with beans. and we was so disappointed about the ham hocks

South side Soul

By IvySade |

Chill place to get an old school plate of classic soul food. Gives you good Texas portion sizes. Would recommend for your soul food fix.

Delicious Soul Food

By Christian P |

I stopped here for lunch with my wife. We arrived early, this place gets packed fast. I ordered the smothered pork chops with 3 sides (mac n cheese, red beans and mashed potatoes). I love the mac n cheese! Pork chops were very good as well as the red beans and mashed potatoes. My wife went with the fried chicken, candied yams, mac n cheese and green beans. Fried chicken was good, not the best she's ever had but she enjoyed it. She loved the sides more than the entree. Each meal cost around $13 and comes with cornbread. Here's what I like most about Mikki's: Most soul food restaurants go way overboard with adding salt. Not Mikki's. They add just the right amount of salt, not overbearing. The best place in Houston for quality soul food at the right price.

Good Soul Food

By poppazo |

After my son's graduation we went to Mikki's to eat lunch, it we our first time there. I had the smothered pork chops, broccoli rice, greens and yams with raspberry tea, the portions are large. Food was good, every one loved it and I was stuffed, prices are reasonable and I'll be back.

Can you say good soul food

By Girljustwannahavefun |

I love their food, it's so good. It's like a family style cafe. the staff are so nice. I mainly love the greens and yams.

Of Tails Major Rip Off. All Bones

By Kathy W |

We have frequented this restaurant since it opened. It had been a while, so we tried tonight. FOURTY FIVE dollars for three meals. No dessert. No drinks. Which would have been OK had the food been OK. Had to ask that fresh fish be brought out as the two pieces on the pan were curled up. The replacement pan of fish was supposed to be baked. It was swimming in water. Not gravy. Water. The ox tails, the most expensive, was mostly a selection of bones on top of gravy and rice. One worker was in the restroom trying to rent an apartment. The one in the serving line was miserable and seemed to be carrying a heavy personal burden. Felt bad for her. But when you go to work.... One bright spot, the sides were good. But every meat selection was horrible and way overpriced. This was our last visit but it appeared they don't need our business.

Mikki's Soul Food Cafe is awesome!

By Gloria S |

I experienced Mikki's for the first time this Sunday, 1/11/09. It was absolutely wonderful. The food, the service and price were all great. My sister's and I were visiting Houston for the weekend, I wanted some soulfood and was wanting to go to "This Is It", but our friend told us about Mikki's and said if I liked "This Is It", then I'd love Mikki's. Well she was right, I had the smoothered pork chops w/dressing, mac-n-cheese, cabbage and cornbread(I know that was alot)but it all looked so good I couldn't help my self. My sister's had the oxtails, fried chicken and the apricot chicken, so we all sampled each others and I must say all of them were wonderful. I would love to have the receipe for their apricot chicken!!! I highly recommend Mikki's to anyone wanting some great soulfood. I will go there again when in houston.

MUST HAVE! TELL MS. FELICIA HELLO

By karenmw67 |

I was so excited. I looked at the pictures, seeing that there were no new reviews. We go inside to see a cafeteria style setting with places to sit and eat. The aroma hit us. Yes I believed WE WERE IN THE RIGHT SPOT. Racks of hot food, and an employee constantly filling the food. The steam table was well maintained and keep full. The line was moving quickly. I was able to be serviced by MS. FELICIA, whom was very welcoming to each end every guest she encountered prior to us. Greeted with a smile and May I help you, I told her we were from Detroit, and from the looks of the pictures, I choose this restaurant. This is my spot when I come to HOUSTON, amd anyone that I know. I read the owners story, amd grateful that her children carried her dream on! Now to the food, we got OXTAILS, MACARONI AND CHEESE, GREENS, PINTO BEANS, FRIED CHICKEN, CANDIED YAMS, CORNED BREAD, AND OH YEAH(KOOL-AID) MIXED KOOL-AID that was perfect might I add!! The mixed Kool-Aid was made from the customer in front of us. Thank You. Got back to our hotel, didn't get pictures of the plates, DANG IT! , was too excited, WE HURT OURSELVES. JUST KNOW YOU WILL NOT, REPEAT, WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. First person I thought of was my Road Dog, my Granny, from Mississippi, who has gone on to Glory, she would have loved it! .

Oxtails

By T M |

Oxtails not worth the money..the oxtails were really small..could have put it on a toothpick and serve it as an appetizer..was disappointed with the food..( this time around) especially since I was craving it all day...

GOOD OLE SOULLLLLL FOOD

By Girljustwannahavefun |

What can I say, I love this place. This is one of the best down home cooking soul food restaurant on the Southwest side of Houston.
