Cute little rustic place

By singkuan |

Cute little rustic restaurant. The garden area in the back is intimate and very chill. I noticed that the place said closed on Yelp so I called to see if they were closed, the restaurant was actually open. Tried to reserve but they do not take reservations under parties of 6. So when I walked in, they said it was a half an hour wait, but was seated 10 minutes later. The food was good. Had the grilled octopus and french toast. French Toast said it had pistachio but didn't taste or see any on the plate. Overall the food was good but the ambiance was more of why I gave the rating a 4 star. Great place for brunch with girlfriends and very laid back atmosphere.

Great food and atmosphere

We had dinner out in the garden (which you wouldn't know was there from the front). Food and service were both great with a good choice of dishes.

Quaint little spot

By Joaniej3 |

Cool little place...almost missed it as it’s so unassuming and sign is faded. Italian food was very good. Good service but cash only.

Btw, not in a seedy part of town.

By Trish B |

The restaurant is in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on busy Manhattan Ave. It is an area that is "the" place to live. Not seedy at all. The restaurant decor was fabulous, I loved it. The food not so much. I had the tuna with capers and green olives. Three very salty items together at once, not terrible just okay. I suggest you go for breakfast/brunch the menu had very appealing sounding options. Dinner is limited. The chicken for dinner was way overpriced for the boring meal you receive. It was like those take out chickens from the supermarket with a cold side dish.

Good food, good drink, good party

By TacomaTerry |

Attended New Years Eve party, had an absolute blast. The ambience was phenomenal, the drinks were tasty and generously-poured. It was lovely without being overcrowded, and I never had to wait too long. One of their staff even helped me get out to the back garden and photographed my wedding proposal, that was super cool. Came back in April for lunch, and man the steak and eggs were A+. Also no it is not seedy chill please.

Terrible service

By Tanya P |

We visited Milk and Roses for a special last night dinner in NYC. The decor was cool, nice ambience and our order was taken promptly. It was early evening and not too busy. Our cocktails were great and we waited for our starters. We'd ordered two starters and two mains. After about 30min one of the starters arrived, but not the second. The waitress appeared confused when we asked after it, went to enquire and said it was delayed. We decided just to share the first starter as we were hungry! It was mediocre, slightly rubbery clams. We waited another 30min and a different person appeared with one of our mains and someone else's starter. We said this was wrong. Shortly after our other main appeared (more waiting staff confusion about why this order was not working for us). Both mains were left cooling on the table whilst the missing starter was looked for. The mains were then sent back - still no starter. It then appeared, but was missing the main element! We'd ordered a salad with salmon roe - but it came with none. We complained, the waiter looked more confused and went to the kitchen. He returned to tell me - roe was fish eggs. I know perfectly well what I ordered! But had none. We sent it back and asked to have it with the main ingredient. More time passed... We'd been waiting over an hour for my starter! The waitress appeared and asked if I'd changed my mind and perhaps didn't want my starter any more? I most certainly did still want my starter. They then reappeared and said it 'could take a while', we asked how long? More to and fro to the kitchen, who apparently refused to suggest a time on the starter or move it to the top of their priority list, despite it being their mistake. It was then suggested we just go for our mains instead as the kitchen might be able to make these for us instead! We gave up on the starter we'd waited an hour and 20min for and agreed to this, we were going to be late for an event after dinner. The mains came quickly, one was mediocre and the other even more rubbery clams than the last ones and a pretty tiny over cooked langoustine. We were charged in the end for our cocktails and rubbery clam starter. Appalling service, appalling wait in a nearly empty restaurant on arrival, mediocre at best, over priced food. A very disappointing last night in NYC. Avoid!!

Nice atmosphere, bad food

By Maria A |

Nice place for drinks and friendly staff. However the food is overpriced and disappointing. Small portions and simply not good. Would not go back.

Nice atmosphere, good food!

By Hildans |

Had a tasty veggie sandwich and a cappuccino while reading my book at this very welcoming spot. A really nice place with comfy booths and a courtyard/greenhouse where you can sit outside (didn't try that though). Not too crowded. Would definitely go back, especially since the staff was so nice! Cash only (ATM in the back).

Incredible Italian Gem in Brooklyn

By Vlad S |

We had the most incredible meal at Milk and Roses! We are from San Francisco, so we are often spoiled with great Italian food in the city and Napa. But, this was a meal that we will remember forever. First, the cocktails were delicious: not too sweet and balanced. We started with a burrata salad, which was a beautiful burrata and fresh cherry tomato. Each person at the table ordered a different main course, including steak, duck, sea bass and salad del mar. Every dish was exquisite. But, the duck was simply superb. Everything on the plate complemented the corresponding protein perfectly. The Italian wine pairing was ideal for each dish, but especially the steak and duck. Our deserts, included almond pear tartine and a one of a kind flan. We cannot recommend this place higher. Truly a restaurant that deserves recognition for authentic, beautiful and fresh Italian food.

Reliably good and in no way in a seedy part of town!

Ate brunch here a few times now and it's consistenly good. Nice place to relax and recharge your caffine levels. I also discovered this is the best cup of tea (by British standards) in NYC!

Cozy atmosphere, delicious food and super friendly service

By Flyer618991 |

We enjoyed our stay very much - nice restaurant with cozy atmosphere, all staff member super friendly. My husband had the burger and I went with the grilled octopus - absolutely delicious. The most positive surprise for us was that the check came only when we asked for it - so we could stay as long as we wanted, no hurry or pressure to pay the check after finishing eating. We know this from Europe but usually we experience this different in the U.S..

Really cool space

By quirkycuisine |

Obviously the coffee was good but more importantly I have never met anyone so happy to pour me a cup of coffee. Now the real star here is the shop itself. This place is practically a library. The walls are covered in the owner's personal collection of books. Grab one sit in a cool red booth and read while you sip on a good cup of coffee. You could waste a day in this place but it would not be a day wasted. You have to check this place out. I would say the most enjoyable coffee shop in the city.

Essential to visit if you're in the area

By EmilytheP |

I have eaten in this restaurant this evening and have to say that the food was excellent, and a welcome and refreshing change from the usual American fayre. Yes, it's candlelight inside so if you want bright lights head somewhere else. But the staff are friendly, the clientele are local and welcoming and I for one am looking forward to heading here for breakfast. A rare find in NYC I think.

Overall Fail. Great space. Good food. Crazy prices. Serious organizational problems.

By Daniel N |

The bad: Brunch. Out of orange juice at noon.... but still serving $15?... $18? mimosas. How does that work? From a mix? The toilet brush in the bathroom was on view and rather disgusting. The $8 Peligrino was room temperature. The possible bad day: The wait staff was trying, but the overall organization was bad. How hard is it to prepare for brunch by ordering up lots of oranges? ... or going to the grocery store and buying some. Or to chill a bunch of bottles of sparkling water the night before? Or how about drizzling more than three drops of EVO on the complimentary bread... good bread. The good: Very nice dining area and outside garden. Very nice, save for the really uncomfortable benches seated in mosquito infested mulch. I also liked the bottles of still water on the table, but perhaps chilled water??? Would that be too much to ask? A little chilled? That would be a nice touch. Our food was all good. A quibble...the shakshuka was just Italian tomato sauce and the eggs were fried and added on top... not poached in the sauce. It was good, just not shakshuka. The $27 burger? Everyone who got one liked it, but as with all pretentious restaurants these days, aioli comes automatically and ketchup must be requested. By the time I got ketchup my food was luke warm and I'd eaten half the burger and fries without it. Without ketchup it was very good... but for $27, I would have preferred ketchup with the food while it was still hot. ALERT! Restauranteurs and chefs. Please don't dictate condiments to your customers. Stop telling us what we should like. Us Amr'kins like ketchup on hamburgers, french fries, and some even like it on hot dogs (fightin' words). Leave us to our barbarous ways. Get over yourselves. lf you put a hamburger on the menu, expect the customer to wand ketchup. Very good fries. Liked the rocket side salad too. The place is expensive and simply isn't worth it. I can only hope that our experience was an anomaly.

Nice place for drinks

By Fluffypolite |

We stopped here for after dinner drinks. It was a cozy, intimate setting with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Cocktails were unique and delicious.

Looks cool, but below average experience

By MABMontreal |

The setting is nice and cool but no sign of the owners and their slogan: American cuisine with a southern Italian twist. The menu is limited to a few choices, the service is OK but clearly not professional. When I mentioned that the red wine was too warm, I was asked if I wanted ice in my glass...The food was below average and to top it all off, they don't take credit cards or debit cards...First and last visit.

Very friendly, good service, good, food

By Man F |

A Greenpoint gem: very friendly staff who seemed to be happy to be there and happy to help, good food (try their take on a BLT with chimi churri) and shabby chic surroundings with a lovely garden. well worth a stop off if you're in the area.

Cozy restaurant with delicious food

By Fettucine |

Very atmospheric small restaurant in Greenspoint area of Brooklyn. We sat inside because the evening was chilly but the outdoor garden seating looks beautiful for a warm evening. A few Italian inspired dishes...we had shrimp over bucatini that was excellently prepared. Very friendly and well trained staff. Our server, Daniela, was knowledgeable and attentive which made for an enjoyable evening. Would definitely return here

A pleasant surprise

By Lois C |

5 of us went out for dinner not knowing anything about this place. What a pleasant experience. Dimly lit, neat atmosphere and pleasent staff. Every dish we had was fantastic. Brazini with veggie was amazing, sausage dish was perfect, pasta dish with short rib meat also amazing. We all tried each others dishes. The tiramisu the best But it was way to little and way to pricey for a tiny dessert. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. Take note it is cash only.

Relaxed spot in north Brooklyn

By Alix |

Great place with a cool vibe. Good for a drink or food. I only had a started but it was tasty and the wine was delicious. A very chilled bar/restaurant.

Fantastic decor and service

By Nuno B |

The decoration is really nice and so is the ambience. The cocktails were well served and enjoyable. We had a bit of an odd situation with our order for food, but the server quickly proposed a nice solution that got everyone pleased. Nice place to go for a late snack and some drinks.

Cozy and a bit dusty

By LCO |

Pretty good choice when in Greenpoint. Their menu is simple but the food is rather good; also the venue is interesting, eye-catching, though relaxed both the interior and the small garden but there is a need of a bit of renovation, yet the underlying sense of decadence gives a certain charme. Prices are good. A special mention to the excellent help of their Italian waiter.

Gets your creative juices flowing...

By 4Family4FunNY |

This place is full of book and an atmoshere that makes you feel smart and creative. I had a mini tart with arugala which was delicious. Also, the coffees are fantastic. A perfect place to do business calls at lunch, because our waiter Simon anticipated our needs without being disruptive. I will definitely be going back for inspiration and soul comfort.

great place, great food

By Parvatee37 |

Very nice neighborhood joint, perfect for Sunday's breakfast. They have a Green House and a garden and large couches in the main room that looks like a bar in the middle of an old library. Cash only but they have a ATM in the Green House

Great hideaway!!!

By jillgilmore |

This was a delightful experience. Such a quaint interior, lovely bar area and wonderful wait staff and bartender. We order appetizers and a salad. Delicious combinations. Highly recommend!!

romantic bar

By Hubert P |

I really enjoyed having a drink here. The garden is ver y romantic and gave us inspiration for our garden at home. Lovely staff !

Very good food in very small portions

By Dinnerout66 |

Warm, artsy interior, interesting menu, but very pricey for the quantities -- we left rather hungry!

Charming and delicious

By LauraD0603 |

This is a local gem. The ambience is vibrant AND calm. The food is innovative and delicious. I always feel like a local although I'm an out- of-towner. Very memorable experience.

Lovely hidden patio gem

By clmcc |

A great experience with a fun cocktail menu, lovely service, and very good food. The patio is charming and was such a pleasant time on a warm September evening with it's rustic decor and strings of lovely lights. The interior looks charming and would make for a cozy, romantic dinner spot.

A must

By Antoine P |

I went there two times. A so cosy place with a beautiful and peaceful backyard. And besides the food was delicious...

Beautiful backyard nice menu!

By Ipmah |

The backyard is really an oasis. A small but very nice menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The dishes are delicious but too small ...especially for the pretty expensive prices!

What a find!!!

By Elizabeth H |

I stayed nearby at the Box House Hotel. The staff recommended Milk & Roses for breakfast. Went there with a friend who is Italian. We walked in to captivating, intimate setting. We could have been in Europe. Asked to be seated in the garden in the back. The setting was rustic/adorable. She said the bkft menu was as if she was back in Italy. Our server was Italian too. Food was excellent!! Espresso was delicious! Absolutely plan to go back. Highly recommend.

Eclectic hide-away eatery

By Minette du Preez Joubert |

Walked into this cosy alternate eatery on our way to the hotel one evening and had a wonderful supper! Food was excellent, service friendly and helpful and decor different and inviting! Would eat there again!

Mediocre but cool environment

By LowcountryA3 |

We read a few reviews of this place and popped in for dinner one night. The atmosphere is quaint and cozy, which was a plus. The menu was very limited and nothing really stood out. Our dinners were ok, but nothing special at all. The staff was friendly but hardly said two words to us...a strangely quiet atmosphere. Would not return. With all the choices in Brooklyn and NYC, this one did not stand out.

Nice terrace, good food.

By Amy C |

The food itself is good, quite pricey but good value for brunch. During summer, their little terrace is one of the most beautiful and quiet place I've seen in the City.

Charming little spot

By MisMoz |

I went to milk and roses for drinks in January 2017 and found it to be a charming little spot, with nice ambience great decor and delicious cocktails. The waiting staff was nice and helpful. Recommended for a relaxing evening out

Lovely rustic backyard makes up for average food

By 123Nishi |

We've been going there since it opened and will continue to go there. There's nothing wrong with average homemade tasting food and good coffee! Honestly, a little bit on the pricey side for sandwiches, but you can stay in the carefully created spaces in the yard as long as you like. The interior space is lovely in winter! Beautiful spot to meet friends and family.

Romantic and rustic

By Jeanette B |

What a great way to start our vacation, by eating here. You can either sit inside, comfy, like an old library or pick a table outside in the courtyard. Really romantic and stressfree. Good food, small plates though but that was just fine for us. Would love to go back. Is situated on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, close to Box House Hotel so this was a short walk away.

Change your plan

By Lyon_FranceChris |

You would like to have a nice diner in a nice wine bar, change your plan and go away. The service is very long, the wine choice is to small, the kitchen is not so tasty, their is no enough light to see your partner, the menu have very very small letter be able to read this without glasses, and last but not least the price is expensive, compare to the quality level. I repeat, go way.

Wonderful Food and Ambiance

By Maggie O'C |

This is a charming restaurant with REALLY good food. I had the best cheeseburger I have had in a very long time if not the best ever. Perfect fried potatoes. Very nice servers. Highly recommend!!!

What a surprise in a seedy part of town

By gozziestravels |

After getting home to our Motel late (8.30pm) we were starving and wanted something easy and quick to eat. We went up the street to a Mexican Restaurant that was SUPPOSED to be open till 10pm on a Monday night, only to be very disappointed that it wasn't. But lucky for us just a few doors up we discovered 'Milk and Roses Cafe' and they were still open! This place has a lot of character with some gorgeous old fashioned style Red leather sofas and old books. We especially loved the sign at the till that said 'No Laptops'. No one else was in the cafe so we went in. The waitress acknowledged us immediately and within just a few minutes came over to look after us which she continued to do for the rest of the evening we were there. She suggested to us we may like to sit outside, out the back in the courtyard, so we took up her suggestion and were pleasantly surprised. The outside eating area was like a magic garden. We were surrounded by little potted herbs and fairy lights. And it was a plus that New York was putting on really nice weather for us as well. I had the eggplant dish with a polenta side order and although it was a little light and not super substantial, it gave my palate a wonderful surprise with a delightful mixture of exciting flavours. The waitress was extremely attentive to our needs with out being annoying. She even brought out a delicious dessert she knew we would like when she had discovered that what we had ordered wasn't available. It looked like there were only two staff on but they both handled the work load professionally and relatively swiftly. This was an extremely pleasant evening after a rather stressful day catching the subway and having to put up with rudeness and a general lack of interest in their jobs from unfriendly staff we met at Times Square. This place in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a really lovely surprise and a definite 'must do!'

Cozy, Intimate, Romantic GP Dinner Spot

By natalie r |

Got a table for 4 without a reservation at 7p on a Friday night. Don't have to worry about fighting crowds here. A rather small food and wine menu, but nicely curated. Great meat selections and traditional vegetable sides...without the steak-house prices. The paprika octopus with fennel salad was a stand-out. Only disappointment was the limited wine list.

Charming place

By Viinnie T |

Really enjoyed our time here. Just stopped in for drinks and an app. I loved the atmosphere. It is like an old library with a bar. Chicken liver pate was great too.

Gem find. Delighting to my senses.

By leavethewritingtome |

Push back the non-descript doors and let another world wow you. That is my first impression of this place. I was at staying at The Box House hotel next door and decided to check out the neighbour - and it was exactly the kind of place I was looking for. Real fireplace, quiet, friendly service in a beautiful setting to enjoy a warm meal on the cold winter day I was there. Had a lamb pasta with a lavender tea. Yummy! My senses were very satisfied. This restaurant is an event destination type place with the whimsical outdoor seating - it used to be a garage and nightclub so appreciative of the owners’ work done to transform / repurpose it into such a lovely space. A word on event type places : it’s great for those invited but not sure if I as a wandering tourist would want to be part of the uninvited crowd - it’s one of those places I’ll probably call in advance or check their social media to see if there is something on then decide if I want to enjoy this place when it is more quiet or avoid being disappointed / turned away because it is booked out for an event. Or if like me, get lucky - this is a gem find.

Hated it!

By Panagiotis K |

I went there with a friend of mine on 31st December, at about 18:00 for a coffee and they said that we had to pay for the NewYearsEve menu. We explained them but we only want a coffee for the next half hour but they didn't let us, even if no customers were inside and there were many free tables! Bad! Bad! Bad behaviour!
