Fresh and consistently fine sushi

By DavRut |

The fish is always fresh and the quality consistent...Service is excellent and the staff always pleasant and helpful. We have eaten here and the Mio Sushi restaurants on NW Johnson and NE Halsey for several years and have never been dissatisfied.

great sushi at a great price

this place is great and not like the run of the mill track sushi joints around town. Its clean and quiet and affordable!

spider rolls

By Yummyfoodtaster |

Good place if you're on the go and want some good sushi, spider rolls are amazing, but they also have awesome tuna rolls. Great to share, and they are clearly very clean.

Decent Prices, Good Sushi

By Pauline L |

This actually goes for ALL the Mio Sushi's in Portland Oregon. Prices are very fair and the sushi is very fresh

Very satisfied repeat customer

By Iamtravelnutz |

I love coming here for sushi. It is one of those rare places where they actually remember their repeat customers. The manager makes you feel like a VP and will often send over free tea or soup. The sushi always tastes fresh and they have many tasty roll combos. I have tried most of them and have never been disappointed. I highly recommend trying this place out.

always good

By Lauren K |

I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 yrs and they've been a reliable place to eat at for all these years. Each time I go, the food is always delicious and pretty reliably good. They've changed the menu a few times but the best things have remained on the menu. The sushi pizza is spicy and yummy, the bento boxes are all very good. I've eaten at other Mio Sushis and this one is the best. They have raised the prices over the years but I guess that's to be expected.

Consistent good

By Lkim |

We've lived in the neighborhood for 10 yrs and the quality of the food has always been consistent. The sushi is fresh and all the other dishes are all tasty and don't disappoint. I would recommend this to place to any friend.

Pretty good!!!

By Remi V |

Great selection... I've visited 2 of their locations. Beautiful creations and just good solid sushi. Great service. .

Cute location, good food/prices, a little slow

By nevinbleau |

We went here twice while visiting Portland to the same location. The second time was during lunch and very very slow. But the food was still great for the price and they accommodated my food allergies easily. The first time we went the service was great and we got to sit near the window. I love that so many places are in old houses! Overall, a great place to eat and save money.

To sushi or not to sushi

By pbaer |

We have a Mio Sushi in or town so this wasn't our first choice as we like to try something new when we're travelling however stepping into Mio Sushi we knew what to expect. I have only one negative... * cleanliness: moderate Prior to sitting down the server cleared a space at the sushi counter, quickly wiping down the area with a wet cloth she already had in her hand and used in another table without ringing it in clean/treated cleaner. Thus made my decision to avoid on this trip due to my concerns of cross contamination. Lastly as we prepared to leave there was suddenly an overwhelming growing "fishy" smell :-(

Wonderful Sushi place, charming (not a whole lot of seats, so get there early or be patient)

Not the best, but does the trick.

By dr_MPortland_OR |

Sometimes you just want sushi without having to wait an hour or shell out $50. This place has creative rolls, good quality nigiri, and the price is fine. I wouldn't bring friends from out of town or choose it as date night, but I'd head there for lunch or dinner if a mid-week sushi craving hit.

Wow! This is the best sushi!

By Satdiver |

These sushi chefs really are top notch. Some of the finest sushi I have had this side of Japan itself. The Spider Roll is amazing.

Mio Sushi

I absolutely love Mio Sushi! We went there and the service was wonderful and the sushi was made to order and it all tasted so fresh! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone!

Middle of the road sushi, go to Hiroshi, Murata or Bara instead

By twoodburn |

I don't get Trip Advisor. WAY too many outdated, middle of the road places are getting high popularity ratings. Tip: Go to OregonLive and Yelp and you will get a more accurate and updated reading on the real best places to eat in Portland. Many of the listings here, Mio included, are skewed "popularity" ratings and not really indicative of the best quality dining in Portland. SO many of the highly listed places are WAY out of date or have seen better days.

Amazing

We had an amazing experience! The food was top notch and well priced. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

Unimaginative sushi. There are better in the area

By Judy M |

My daughter and I went there for dinner. The nigiri had a citrusy flavor that was not welcome. The rolls were mediocre. I think the fish was fresh since we didn't get sick. Just have had better sushi at many other local restaurants.

Great Vegetarian Sushi

By Not2Girly |

Loved the large number of vegetarian options. I adore the flavor combinations in sushi, but sometimes options for non-meat eaters are slim to none. I was very happy with the selection.

Solid sushi

By h22101 |

I wasn't in a sushi mood so I had a bento box at this Korean-run Pearl District sushi stop. The place had that semi-antiseptic smell that sushi places often have, but I was reassured to see signs everywhere, including on the cover of the menu, that the place had had the highest health ratings for 10years. I assumed there had been local news stories about unsafe sushi or something-I have no idea what would prompt this emphasis, which I've never seen before in years of eating sushi all over-but because it was a 100 degree day, I was particularly happy to see these notices. My bento box was disappointing. The California roll was not my favorite style. The fried tofu was blah. The dressing on the green salad was a color not found in nature and only ok. The salmon was fine but in a thick sauce. My husband and son shared a couple of special rolls that they enjoyed. My daughter had one of the Korean bento boxes. It was reasonably priced and our waitress was friendly. If you find yourself hungry in this area you could probably do worse but also could likely do better.

Best iced tea

By KidReviews |

The mango iced tea at Mio sushi was amazing. My dad got it first, then we wound up getting two more. The food there was also fabulous. My sister who is a very picky eater said that there teriyaki chicken was delicious. My mom got the same and agreed. I got the tempura shrimp, and my dad got a sushi platter. We cannot wait to go back!

Satisfied our cravings!

By Yurikaz |

Our first visit to Portland and we had a hankering for sushi. After some internet research, we decided to try Mio Sushi. The staff were very friendly and the food was fresh and delicious! My daughter and I shared a bento box with 3 items and there was plenty of food for the both of us. It was tasty and the sushi was fresh. A very satisfying dining experience! Would definitely come back the next time we're in the area.

Loved it

By Kushki |

They had very good staff and the food was very good. Reasonably priced & tasty. We even bought some to go for the road on our way from Portland to Seattle

Small Space, Good Sushi

By GKBrash |

Had been told about Mio Sushi by people in the office. There are so many locations, but we ended up at the Johnson Street address. It is on a side street just off of the main hustle of NW 23rd Avenue. The parking is a bit tough. They do have meters that expire at 7:00pm, but good luck finding one. We did get lucky, but we had to drive around for a few minutes and we happened to get one when the person was leaving. Lucky timing. We sat at the sushi bar. This location is small with just a few tables as well as seating at the sushi bar. The menu is your typical sushi menu with some signature rolls. They also have a food menu where you can order other Japanese inspired dishes (Teriyaki and Tempura), but you go there mostly for the sushi. All of my order was very good and the fish tasted fresh. The veggies in the rolls were nice and crisp. The service was great and the staff was very friendly. The sushi was so good that my co-worker wanted to go again, but this time we went to the Mio Sushi location on 1317 NW Hoyt Street. That location has more space, but the food and service were all the same. Prices are not crazy and they do offer Japanese beers, sake and wine. I will go back there when I am in Portland again.

I Was Craving Sushi

By Daphne P |

For some reason, I was craving sushi and Google delivered info on this restaurant - just off NW 23rd - Nob Hill area. Fresh and flavorful sushi selections. Outdoor seating is available as well

Mio is Mio is Mio

By ChrisPdx |

Mio's are all the same, but that's not a bad thing. It's consistently solid sushi, and the service here is better than some of the other locations.

Simple and good

By frenkie_boy |

We had a nice late lunch, some appetizers, miso soup, some sushi. I liked the house saki, and all the food was tasty fresh and felt clean; not thrilling ambience, but if you walk by and look for a nice clean meal - this might be your choice!!

Veggie items clearly labelled on menu :D

By TheVeggieNomad |

This cafe has nice outdoor seating as well as indoor tables for colder days. There is a section on the menu dedicated to vegetarian sushi roll options and all of the veggie items in the appetizers and other menu items lists are labelled with a little green leaf. Service was friendly and quick. Perfect for lunch while strolling the shops around 21st - 23rd :D

Tasted Fresh

Was visiting my parents, this restaurant is within a short walk. Called in for a large to-go order, customer service was nice, the lady called me when they were running behind on orders. All of the Sushi rolls looked great, tasted yummy and fresh.

Casual, Good, Reasonable Prices

By novacc |

Was eating a late lunch on a Monday, and found Mio Sushi in Nob Hill. Because it was late afternoon, it was not crowded at all. It looks like a family-run place. Our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered a variety of nigiri and sushi rolls, all seafood based. The tuna was buttery and fresh. Only complaints were that the miso soup was served barely warm, and they were out of flounder and uni.

Sushi Mio in Nob Hill was easy, casual and good!

By Terri J |

We tried to eat at Bamboo Sushi (both places in the Nob Hill area) and it had an extremely long wait and some of the outdoor tables are so close together with lots of people walking by that we decided maybe another time. We put our name in at Sushi Mio and got seated in about 15 minutes. The eating tables were close together but not uncomfortably so. We found the servers helpful, the menu was quite extensive. My vegan kid found all kinds of choices. Actually there were many many choices and we had to go back and forth about what all we wanted to try. Everyone got something different and all were enjoyable. The restaurant is 1/2 block off 23rd and easy to find. It's a converted old house. It was lively and fun. No rush to order. Our server bless her answered all our questions. We ended up very satisfied and probably saved some $ to boot by eating here. Recommend if you are in the area.

Favorite little sushi spot

By Jkl |

The highlight of this place is real crab in many of the rolls. It looked like whole snow crab leg meat which is mixed with mayo I guess. This is amazing. I have been going to this Mio for many years. It changed a bit with covid but the spirit of before is still there. So many sushi places seem the same as each other, but Mio stands out, especially this location on NW Johnson. One of my favorite restaurants of all and a great location in a cute old house.

Good, fast, and affordable

By bagpipe |

This is really a fish market and commercial fish supplier, but they also serve a really decent lunch, both bento boxes and fish and chips. The orders are turned around quickly, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is fresh. The only downside is that there is very limited seating so be prepared to take your food with you.

Delicious sushi options in this fun little neighborhood restaurant.

By FWFamilyof4 |

Small and neighborhood, this place is very inviting. The sushi and nigiri and Bento box options are all delicious! Hiromi is a wonderful server as well, very sweet.

Quick dinner

Stopped in while waiting for an appointment. Seated quickly with a smiling and friendly hostess. We wanted a light dinner so we ordered two rolls. Both were tasty not remarkable but these were simple rolls too

Our favorite Sushi Place

By shock43 |

This is our favorite Sushi place when visiting family in Portland. The restaurant area is in an older house which we like. The variety of sushi rolls is great, the freshness is outstanding, the service is always very friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

"UNIMPRESSED "

By Louise |

We probally had high expectations after reading good to great reviews. We are all advid sushi eaters having it two to four times a week. MIO defenently was a disappointment, the service was poor, the only good thing was the quant little neighborhood where its located. The rolls where very basic the sauces all tasted the same and where bland. The rolls are small in size for the price and just about everything we ordered they where out of.

What a surprise

By Sissycat57 |

Was very surprised at how wonderful the food was and the service was amazing. Had a wonderful waitress, very patient and enthusiastic. The food was just as good as the service. The calamari with the green tea salt was out of this world. It is a must try. Also their mango iced tea was very very good

Good Japanese restaurant for sushi

By miaoyutony |

This restaurant is pretty neat. I really like sushi here. The service is also pretty good. However, the ramen here is not the real Japanese style.

Quaint Little Sushi Place

By Maru C. |

I really enjoyed dining at this little sushi place located in the beautiful neighborhood of Nob Hill. The restaurant is really cozy, and it has a great atmosphere. The food quality is really good, especially the salmon. I was impressed because the prices are really good, so I didn't expect such good quality. The sushi was really good too, except the sushi rice, which was kind of mushy, that's the only reason why I'm not giving it five stars.

Good sushi, medocre atmosphere

By JessicaDPDX |

Good traditional sushi restaurant. Usually several families with children in there, plus couples and singles. Right on Hawthorne. Atmosphere a little to "cafeteria" looking for me.

Weekly staple

By Deborah N |

This is our go-to sushi place for casual, easy, delicious food. My kids love coming here for the miso soup, cucumber rolls and ramen soup. I love the goma roll (seaweed and lettuce, etc) and salmon sashimi. Everything we have had here is fresh and good. Nothing fancy, just good, consistent food and friendly service.

Better Japanese Restaurant in Portland area

By DMUH |

This restaurant was much better than most Japanese restaurants in the Portland area. Fish is fresh and the sushi rice is decent. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. The house sake is my recommendation. It is very inexpensive and rather good. I had a large flask (versus a small one) for $7.95. Considering the price, the sake was great. The hot tea at the end was also surprisingly tasty.

Good food, if you can wait for 45 min

By M L |

We came here due to good reviews. We for seated at 1220pm and did not get food until 105 pm. Left at 125pm. Bentos are good and reasonably priced, if you have all day to wait for the kitchen to cook your food.

Try Mio Sushi for lunch when people watching or shopping on NW 23rd

By bbaker5555 |

A regular lunch spot for me when I am on NW 23rd. The dishes are consistently good. The Lunchbox is an excellent value and you get a good variety of choices for the box. The sushi is also very good. The service is good and the atmosphere is simple and very acceptable.

5 Star Food, 3 Star Service

By Jacdbs01 |

We went here based on Trip Advisor reviews. The food was excellent. We had the calamari, rainbow roll, sashimi and one of the Mt (can't remember if it was Hood or Rainer) rolls. All of which was delicious. Our original waitress seemed to not be with it that day. I'm not sure if she was new or what. She kept having to come back to verify our order. Then at another table, she was supposed to split bill the ticket and billed it all to one card. The customers basically had to pay each other back, because they couldn't get it reversed. After that it look like the girl either got sent home or fired. The other waitress took her out and talked to her and she left. That said the other waitress was VERY thorough and attentive. All in all, we enjoyed our experience and would go back.

After Mt. Hood hike, we visited Portland Japanese garden. As an accomplished visit to the city, we end up having sushi at Mio sushi. Excellent food.

Good Sushi, Creatively Presented at Several Portland Area Locations

By markobear1 |

Mio Sushi has some of the best sushi being served in Portland today. Consistently fresh and served up by a competent staff, Mio is a great choice whether entertaining clients or visiting with friends over dinner. In addition to sushi, Mio is known for their tempuras which is always served golden on the outside and without that greasy aftertaste that can happen so often with this menu selection.

A family favorite

By drtripmom |

Fantastic miso soup and seaweed salad choices. My kids love the green tea calamari. Hawthorne location is fun / lively, though occasionally not as clean as it should be (wet rags used over and over do NOT clean--they smear. Love the staff usually, some just need to clean better.). Desserts are spectacular, we indulge rarely due to dairy content, but they make for great special occasion treats for the family.

Small yet really high quality and reasonably priced!

By PALTravel |

When I get to Portland and need a quick lunch I always look for a good fresh seafood/sushi place. Mio Sushi looks like a little hole in the wall, but with outside seating on an Indian Summer day, it was the perfect option. I love Hamachi (pacific yellowtail) and it was extremely fresh and the length of fish was double the length of the sushi rice. Incredible proportion of fish to rice. Ended up ordering a total of six pieces. I could have eaten more, but wanted to try other options. Also, when I asked for Uni, my waitress came back with 'no super-fresh uni in stock', so they only serve when extremely fresh. That is key to uni. If you can get it really fresh, it is the most wonderful flavor, especially when topped with a raw quail egg. Then, I usually don't order rolls, but if they have a salmon skin hand roll, I get that or a spider roll. I ordered the spider roll: Deep-fried soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, sweet sauce, sesame seeds. The batter was very light and didn't take away from the great flavor of the soft-shell crab. Very good. Hamachi was $4.50 for two and the spider roll was $7.75. Great food reasonably priced.

By dibsenm |

This is a neighborhood place we go to over and over. It's always busy and that's because of it's combination of very tasty food and very good prices. The shrimp tempura is great and a real bargain. There is a lot of good sushi that's also well priced.

Excellent Japanese food in a simple restaurant.

By Homero Meirelles Jr |

The restaurant is not very pretty or comfortable, but the food is excellent, plentiful and cheap. The service is very attentive and friendly. Great for families and groups. We ate a lot and very well for US$170.00 (six people), without wine, with beer and desserts. A great night.

Affordable tasty food

By Leah O |

The prices were very reasonable and the service was great. I wasn't a Hugh fan of the salad with ginger dressing, the dressing wasn't very good. The miso soup and the sushi were excellent. The ice cream was good too and artfully served. It is also nice there is a parking deck around the corner with free parking! Definitely a plus!

Glad we happened upon this place!

We found this place while lost and searching for another, but we're so grateful that we did! The sushi was AMAZING! Delicious, reasonably priced, SO fresh and beautifully presented.

HIgh prices - bad fish great combo

By apgoop1 |

I have gone here a dozen times but their comeback after COVID appears to need work. I ordered a 9 piece combo sashimi and 4 of the nine very small pieces of fish were bad, I mentioned it to the waitress two times and talked to the chef on my way out. He said, "I'm sorry." Very expensive and very sad food. Stay away. Its gone downhhill, sadly.

Delicious, affordable sushi

By Marc L |

Mio as been around for many years and expanded from a tiny spot in NW Portland to a 15-restaurant empire. But their quality remains consistent at all the locations I have visited, and they have maintained quality ingredients and creative dishes. Along those lines - the unorthodox sushi pizza is a must!

Great food...great price

By Mrb |

We happened into this restaurant because our first choice wasn't open...so happy we did! The food was spectacular! We ate a choose three bento box(chicken teriyaki, beef, veggie yakisoba), amazing miso soup, soy wrapped avocado rolls, tempura roll, texas roll, cucumber roll and saki...plus a fresh fruit mango iced tea. I wish I lived closer!

Cute and well-priced sushi spot

By metrochica |

We had a very nice dinner at Mio Sushi. It is in a cute house off of 23rd Ave on a quieter street. We tried 3 different rolls. They were all very tasty. They had great miso soup. The service was a bit slow but that's because they were pretty busy. While it wasn't the greatest sushi I've ever had, it was fresh , flavorful, and well-priced. Definitely a good spot for a tasty and affordable dinner.

My favorite Miso soup in town.

By Lyn B |

I frequently pick up Miso soup and Seaweed salad...its been around for a long time and food is always good.

Lunch

By 1occasional_traveler |

We had a good lunch. The Vento box allows each diner to pick what they want. The food was good, and not overwhelming in portion size. If you want sushi, they have a full array if choices.

Great sushi and ambiance

By HawaiiHanayo |

My daughters and I ate at Mio several times during our trip to Portland. Just thinking about their delicious food makes my mouth water. Great shrimp tempura and a wonderful variety of sushi and other rice dishes to choose from. Lots of local people at lunchtime so you know it must be good! Reasonable prices, very friendly staff, the Pearl District location has a very hip yet welcoming feel.

Small restaurant with an extensive menu of sushi dishes and the fish was extremely fresh..we ate at a sidewalk table as the weather was expected to reach into the 90's. Server was very attentive but not over bearing. Sushi rolls were the way to go as it provided plenty and came out fairly quickly as our lunch was very tight between meetings. Check out the soft shell crab sushi and dragon roll, yummy

Best Sushi.

By GoCoFam |

We learned to love sushi at this incredible restaurant about a decade ago. It hasn't suffered in quality and the prices still provide the greatest value in the city. The 21st location is small, located near a bevy of restaurants & shops, making it a great locale for couples & smaller groups on work or shopping breaks. The hot tea is our favorite of all the teas. And don't miss the kanihama, Oregon & coco rolls.

My favorite sushi restaurant!

By mawreee |

I stumbled upon Mio Sushi several years ago on NW Johnson and have made it a must-stop every time a visit Portland since. The atmosphere is cozy and unique in a little house in a residential neighborhood. Prices are excellent (sushi is spendy where I live) and staff is friendly. You are greeted by both the chefs and servers when you enter the restaurant and thanked when you leave. The sushi is presented well and the menu has a large selection of traditional rolls. I understand that Mio has opened several more locations in western Oregon due to their success, but the quality at the NW Johnson location has not changed. Highly recommended.

Yum

By KLSFKS |

Salmon nigiri, double crunch roll and Mt Fuji roll super fresh and delicious! Good prices. Classic rolls were fresh but couldn't hold their own to the aforementioned. Ordered a kids bento box for my son and the chicken teriyaki was excellent. They even brought ice to cool down his miso soup. I appreciated the thoughtfulness even though I was the one who ate the soup. Well worthwhile visit! We will definitely crave the Mt Fuji roll. I was skeptical based on the description but it bursts with flavor and melts in your mouth. Must try.

Perfect!

By marn123 |

Stumbled upon this adorable little spot for lunch as we strolled along the shops of 23rd. Such a quiet area and friendly staff. We had the Bento Boxes and they were SO yummy and we couldn't even finish them. The service was perfect and prices reasonable. Wish we had this place in our hometown!

Waited 30 minutes for our last dish!

By BarefootBuddies |

Our first two orders arrived in a reasonable length of time. After we finished those, we realized we hadn't gotten our Mt. Rainer order. Sheesh. Took them 30 minutes more to bring that. It would have been nice if they had owned up to their mistake (had to be a mistake) and at least given us the dish for free. We weren't even hungry by the time it came. We will NOT go back.

delicious sushi

By Teresa M |

we were celebrating our 5th anniversary and wanted to do it at this location. we began with a kirin beer and the eiko fuji sake, which quenched our throats. next we ordered the cucumber salad, which hit the spot. after finishing the salad, we had the asparagus sesame seeds rolls, the mt st helen, and the mackerel....all so tasty...the outside seating is fine, the server friendly and efficient.

Really good, well-priced lunch

We had Bento boxes which was a great value for 2 rolls, soup, salad, gyoza and rice. It was tasty and the service was excellent. A great find while out shopping in Portland!
