Good Food . Great Price

By George Gregory |

Salad of mixed green are delicious , a simple menu with really great ingredients. The price are great considering the portion size. can recommended any one.

Beautiful Petite hideaway.

By Richard W |

Mistrial is an amazing and simple restaurant; provide the best service, provide a beautiful atmosphere, and great food with daily specials. They have amazing NY strips, served perfectly to temperature, amazing fish as well. They also offer a deep French wine cellar in addition to some great California wine. It’s small, I would not recommend it for small children or groups over 8. Bon appetite

Pricey but worth it

By Mitch H |

Very good food and service. Much better steaks than the well known steak houses. Known for great fries. Limited but wll rounded menu. Even though it is a bit pricey, especially for the valley, I left feeling I had an excellent meal and enjoyed the evening. Unlike many noted restaurants in LA that cater to industry people and treat us "commoners" like they are doing us a favor allowing us in, this restaurant gave us the felling that they were working hard to make sure the cooking and service was first class. This french bistro is an attractive room. The only draw back, is it tends to be very loud.

MISTRAL UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP--GREAT FOOD, MEH SERVICE

By David B |

It has been a year since we last visited Mistral. For many years it was our favorite upscale, fine dining restaurant and we visited every few weeks. After Covid and with the uptick in pricing which turned the cost of dining there for the two of us from affordable to a luxury, we had to cut back. California is a hard state to do business in and the cost for labor and rent and food simply made dining regularly at this gem of a place, too pricey. So it was and remains relegated to special events. The restaurant is no longer owned by the folks like Henry who owned it for several decades. Many of the waitstaff remain as do the great Bartenders like Dana. The Mistral chef and kitchen staff seem to still be there turning out top rate food. But the restaurant's new owners seem to be trying to "freshen up" and make cosmetic changes and in so doing particularly in the maitre d' role and in some of the wait staff, including particularly those who were long employed at Mistral and knew the drill, show signs of slacking off, and not hitting the objective of first class service for customers. We arrived for dinner with friends. We walked in and were approached by a fellow in blue jeans who showed us to our table. He did indeed welcome us, but we did not feel like he held a candle to Raul, the long serving maitre d' who apparently retired in January 2025. Once seated we were quickly approached by a waiter/busboy who did not greet us but did ask us what kind of water we wanted and he assured us that our waiter would be there shortly. As promised the waiter appeared, handed out menus (the options on the regular menu have been substantially pared back, and those which remain have had an appreciable jump in price. The once $45.00 that became $52.00 and now costs more than $70 for a New York Steak with green salad and frites is an example of price increases. The list of salads, appetizers etc has been appreciably pared down. The daily special menu was not present (perhaps because the restaurant was participating in Restaurant Week). Our waiter was clearly in a hurry to take our drink orders and then to take the food orders. In fact, his glum face and disposition made it seem essential that we hurried up to order and when we said we needed a little more time, he gave us truly a little more time--I think less than 3 minutes. One of our party asked about cocktails or wine and was ignored. She had to get the waiter to return to the table to press him to take her drink order. When he returned he took the dinner orders. Both the Dine LA and the regular menu reflected a few dessert options including the famous chocolate soufle, but he made no mention of it as they always used to do as ordering the soufle after your main course is completed results in a 20 minute delay for it to arrive. My wife and I each ordered the soufles. Our guests opted to decide on desserts until after the main courses were served. The table was set with a bread and butter plate but no bread nor butter was offered or brought to the table. In fact we did not see bread being offered at any of the tables around us. Our salad courses came out and no bread was offered. It was not until the salad courses were finished and cleared that the waiter was asked by me if bread was offered and we were told it would be sent out. It arrived a couple of minutes later with soggy, lukewarm gougers which used to be an amuse bouche provided even before your first course arrived--hot and thoroughly baked and crispy. These were oily and warm and the bottoms of them reflected insufficient baking time. The salads were delicious, though the portions of the endive and apple salad were smaller than they used to be. The cup of onion soup had no crouton in it and was smaller than the serving when the restaurant was under previous management. The mains were brought out and all four of us enjoyed them. Kudos again to the kitchen staff and chef on keeping the fine dining element culinarily speaking in top form. I'd also note that the once beautiful plating of main courses on beautiful china has been replaced with run of the mill plates one might find in any restaurant. Apparently the saying that one eats first with their eyes, did not play a role in the plating of any of the courses we were served. This was disappointing. When it came time for dessert, our waiter forgot that we had placed the dessert soufle orders and had to be reminded of them. They did appear in short order. But it just seemed like he was put out by our having to remind him of the order he had previously taken from us. The waitstaff seemed to be constantly rushing and hustling...and not in a good way. It felt like the elegant, attentive but not harried form of waiting which was a key element of the top flight service at Mistral until apparently when the new owners took over in October of this year, was gone. Nobody was there making sure that they slowed down just a little to offer elegant, competent and professional service with a SMILE. Of course they are dealing with new owners with new visions for the future of the restaurant and now protocols. The one person who was delivering the first class service we have always associated with Mistral was Dana at the bar. We were so glad to see her. Finally the exquisite chandeliers were dirty and the crystals on them were terribly dusty. These chandeliers which used to sparkle should be cleaned thoroughly. They are probably Baccarat chandeliers and the time which might be required to clean them would make for a much better appearance of the room itself. Anytime a restaurant undergoes a change of ownership it is to be expected that changes will be made...that is certainly true based upon what the new owner told us when we asked about the change. He has great plans and we wish him well. But we do hope that he raises his expectations about how his wait staff treat customers so that the experience of dining is equal to the food served. To do otherwise is to make what was a treasure at Mistral into dross. That would be pitiful.

Top French Food in Valley

By Jonathan D |

Mistral is small, charming and has friendly and competent service. Most of all, as is appropriate for a restaurant, it has great food--great French food. There is nothing pretentious or precious in their cooking, just fine ingredients and spot on preparation, From one of the best Pepper Steaks anywhere, to classic French Sole Meuniere, from a simple but wonderful roast chicken to perfect crispy French fries, the food is the star. Every meal starts with an Amuse Bouche of a hot Gougere and there is a fine wine list and full bar.

Date

By IsabellaK |

My husband and I went out on a date last night. We only had couple of hours and wanted to stay local. Mistral never disappoints! This place has been in business for decades with the same owner, manager and staff! Everything is on point! The food is absolutely delicious, amazing wine list, service is impeccable! Definitely worth going and definitely our go to place, from dates to family dinners! Everything is really good on the menu, these are some of the things we ate.

Best Place in the Valley

By westlinn |

Mistral has stood the test of time! For 30 years they have been pumping out meal after wonderful meal. Very well trained staff attends to all your needs. Standard Bistro fares, but daily specials are there as well. Never miss an opportunity to eat here.

Been there fifty times

By westlinn |

Never a bad meal. French bistro, great specials, love the steak tartar. Highly recommend! FYI for people who freak out about it, it can be loud in there

Pretty Good French Bistro

By PlatinumHoney |

Even though it was lunch, had to try the steak frites...had steak au poive with a nice light sauce, well cooked and seasoned fries; wasn't crazy about rather dull and tasteless caesar salad that I started with, but glad it wasn't served with romaine. Excellent service. White tablecloth; napkin switched out to black for me before I even sat down. Good cappuccino...all-round very good albeit pricey...$37.95 for entree, albeit $2.50 for small salad; $5.50 for cappuccino...

NO NEED TO FLY TO FRANCE - EXCELLENT FRENCH RIGHT HERE

Very noisy

This is a good place no doubt about it, but it is so very lound I just found that one had to talk louder then the next is not a very enjoyable experience it kind of ruins dinner fo me!

Consistently Great Food!

By LP A |

We have eaten here several times and have found this lovely place is consistently great! One of the things I love is the ambience here, it has a intimate elegant and lovely decor and the service is great. It is indeed true that Maitre D’, Raul Arroyo graciously oversee each and every detail of your visit to ensure that you too, return to Mistral time and time again. Although they change the menu here frequently to keep it fresh and gives us new things to look forward to and so that we don't get bored, on this visit I had the pot roast...it was AMAZING! Yes, this is an elegant French bistro, there is something here for everyone. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Fantastic Neighborhood Gem !

By Jeff H |

If you enjoy great French food, served in an intimate setting with an excellent wine list, this is the place for you. Mistral is a small local place with a big presence. It's been in business here for 20 years and that speaks volumes. Recommended but make a reservation.

Excellent dinner

By Rosemary W |

We went with a group of friends to celebrate one person's birthday. From beginning to end, everything was great. the service was courteous and attentive, and the food was delicious. I had branzino, Hubby had duck confit, a couple of others had steaks. All looked good and well prepared. We were seated on the covered patio at the back of the restaurant. The evening was cool, but we ere kept warm by the heaters.

Great French Bistro

By GeorgeDubiecki |

We have not been here in years. So glad to have come back. This evening was really great. The service was very attentive by all the staff. Our waiter Alex Varela could not have been nicer. He cared about our needs and fulfilled each of them. The other staff were helpful without being intrusive. They anticipated our every need. I started with the onion soup. It was delicious though I would have preferred it to be richer and more intense. The veal tongue salad with warm potatoes, cornichons, capers and onions and a grain mustard vinaigrette was spectacular. The tastes just kept filling my mouth delightfully. I then had the filet mignon with a port Cabernet reduction which tasted really good. It was served with cipollini onions, potatoes au gratin, green beans, glazed carrots and turnips. The vegetables were cooked just right. Every one else said that they really enjoyed their dishes. The chocolate soufflet was loved. I had the bread pudding and it was good with the crème Anglaise. This is a very upscale French Bistro making you feel right at home.

My oh my!

By Jim K |

This is a restaurant that practices the golden rule. They treated us like family. We showed up without a reservation...just going to get seats at the bar. However the bar was full too. The gentleman who greeted us initially said "let me see what I can do". He went to the bar and talked to a couple of the customer's there, and they agreed to squeeze to the sides so he could bring out 2 additional barstools. We're now happily seated at the bar, and Dana (?) the bartender is so friendly, smart and accommodating. She makes a mean martini! We're brought 2 amazing, warm, cheese-filled horderves. Wow! So good. Then we ordered onion soup and a appetizer salad. Again amazing and fresh. I had a wonderful grilled salmon, and my lady had Duck Confit . She's got a gluten allergy, so the chef changed the sauce just for her...it was amazing. The best she's ever had. A tad pricey but I'm not complaining. It was worth every cent.

Yummy

By alexfridman |

Great Service and Yummy Food! Everything we ordered was very good (escargot, linguini w/shrimp, seafood salad, lamb, and dessert). Valet parking available, prices reasonable, there is also a full bar.

Our go to in The Valley

By Mike C |

A gem of a restarant that never disappoints. Raul is class personified. Bistro garlic chicken with fires. Tuna tartare. Steaks are awesome as are the desserts. Great wine list but they allow you to bring your fav for a corkage free. Don't miss it. Fantastic

Fabulous Country French food

By Stuart S |

This is the third time that we have eaten at this fine restaurant. Each time it gets better and better. From the matre de to the busboys everyone is very friendly and can't do enough for us. Devinitely should be on everyone's go to restaurant when needing a "sure thing" for out of town guests or just wanting a great meal. We took some friends who had never been here and they couldn't stop raving about the ambiance and the food. They said this will definitely be on their list for great restaurants.

enjoyable evening

Very welcoming staff and owner there to visit with the guests. The food was excellent. Prices are on upper end

Great food. Lovely intimate environment

Excellent food. Attentive service. Quiet place to converse as well as dine. Of the many lunches and dinners there always exceptional with varied menu and daily specials

Good steak dinner

By CDP5 |

I ate here as part of a large group for a business dinner. The food was solid -- ordered a medium rare steak topped with garlic, which was well prepared and seasoned. Service was a little brusque, but not so much to be rude. The room is quite noisy, so it wasn't a great venue for a work dinner. But not a bad choice for a casual meal with friends.

Best Bistro in LA

By Michael P |

We keep coming back to this great Bistro - Yes it French - yes it is noisy - yes it is pricey - yes it has a great buzz. BUT the food is great the service better and front of house is ready to make you feel at home. The salads are fresh and local ingredients so they change with the season. We have had Pepper steak ( Filet instead of strip ) it was perfect. Fish is always fresh ( the ahi tuna is too thick but served perfect ) and the mustard sauce or dill is warm and well balanced. Deserts are great and home made. The restaurant favors tables of 4 or 6 and the window tables are for regulars. The bar has 2 T V 's and you can eat at the bar - there is a pricey $25 corkage fee. Yes, you can sit next to LA celebrities - but only during the week. $100 per person is the average tab - Go Go Go reservations are a must ! Yes =have the Pomme Frites !!!!

Fine dining to the max! Wonderful place.

By Lillian S |

Two things I love...the host removing white napkins for black when the ladies are wearing black (without having to ask) and crab cakes. The restaurant is small but the service is as fine as any of the great places in New Orleans and the crab cakes were the best I've had in California. Full bar and great wine list. They served us shrimp as a complimentary appetizer and they were great. You must order the chocolate soufflé....even if you don't want dessert. They brought us 4 spoons and we were happy. If you have a special occasion I highly recommend this lovely restaurant. We will definitely go back many times.

Always an amazing meal!

By H+F |

Wonderful atmosphere, great service, amazing wine selection and the food to always prepared perfectly.

EAT HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK

By Max V |

If you want to spend a huge amount of money and be sick afterwards, this is the place to go. The food was so terrible you can cook it yourself at home. Lathered in butter, even the vegetables were dripping. Unbelievably awful. The assistant to the waiter, who was waiting on us most of the time, was angry, and most of the staff walked around disgruntled. I was sick all night afterwards, and constantly in the bathroom. After you spend $400 on a meal, what a pleasure to be sick from it! Eat here at your own risk. Never mind. Just cook like this restaurant. Get a stick of butter, drop it in a pan, and add anything you want! It'll taste exactly the same.

Wonderful food, wonderful service

By smiledr69 |

This is a small, high end french bistro. Great food, quiet atmosphere, wonderful service. We have been here 3 times this year and every meal has been great. I highly recommend the new york steak with garlic and the chocolate souffle. The wine list is good but slightly pricey. Overall a great experience.

NICE RESTAURANT GOOD FOOD

Special Place. Beautiful food. High prices.

By Nancy D |

The food and service were excellent. Pretty restaurant. We ate early and sat outside in a garden area…so it was a bit deserted. I guess that’s good during covid times. The plates were lovely to look at. The food was very tasty. This is a very expensive restaurant. Thankfully I was a guest since it would have otherwise been a bit much for me. If money is no object and you have a special occasion, this is a perfect place to try. I had no idea it had a Micheln rating until I decided to jot a review. Convenient Sherman Oaks location. Valet parking available.

Very good local place

By Mark J |

The simple apple/date/blue cheese salad is not to be missed and the short ribs are very good. Probably my favorite thing I have to say is the goat cheese puffs and delicious bread that precede the meal - several servings of both were consumed. They also got Sabina's very spicy bloody mary right on the first try (with a smart bartender ask) so that alone puts them high on the list. The wine list could use a better by the glass selection but that describes just about everywhere in LA.

Paris in Sherman Oaks

By Ted L |

Best bistro food in the city. Steak and frites is always perfect in every way. A wonderful Parisian experience, without the expense of getting there (and of course, without the attitude). Chocolate souffle is not to be missed. Excellent, friendly service. Fine wine list and corkage policy.

Wonderful business dinner

By David G |

Went to Mistral last night for a business dinner for about 15 people. Our high expectations for wonderful food were well founded. We enjoyed delightful wines and a congenial atmosphere. Everyone loved their meals. I am a steak fanatic and ordered the New York medium rare. It was cooked perfectly! The blueberry tart was a perfect finish to the meal.

great date place. excellent food and wine.

great date place. excellent food and wine.

A wonderful and special place

By Srklaw7 |

Mistral is a special place in Sherman Oaks. The owner is so involved that the restaurant has the feeling of a private club. The food is first rate and the service is just as good. The wine list is outstanding with many wines that are what appears to be straight retail. The wine service and glassware is also super. the are always wine groups coming to use the restaurant as a wine tasting spot. I highly recommend this restaurant.

GREAT dining experience

By 326PJ |

We ate at Mistral twice this week, once with my wife and the second with my wife, daughter and BF. From out of town. Fantastic food. Had one of the best porks chops ever, great sautéed (not fried) calamari, my wife had the lobster risotto. My family also had the John Dory, lamb chops and arugula salad. All excellent. Wait staff is great. Manager very friendly. One of the nicest dining experiences we've had in a long time

French Bistro at its best!

By NJ J |

From start to finish everything was delicious! The food was perfectly prepared and served. The decor is tasteful classic French bistro. The service was excellent. This is a sure bet for a great meal and a great time.

Disappointing!

By flytba |

After all the great reviews this restaurant had, we expected much more. The food was just average, at best, small portions, and very high prices. When they charge these kinds of prices - they have to be good - and they just were not. Service was excellent, like at a much nicer restaurant but the food was just not up to par. Loud atmosphere, very difficult to talk and or understand anyone.

Excellent all around!! Highly recommend!

By scvtravelers4779 |

We tried Mistral for the first time for a recent anniversary dinner. What a great pick! The service was impeccable. The food was delicious. And the ambience felt special! My husband and I don’t like to overeat so we often share our dishes. But sometimes restaurants are not good about accommodating this request; however, this restaurant was SO KIND to split each dish with care and beauty! Very impressive. We would highly recommend this establishment for a lovely night out!

a pleasant dine la

By Watersprite91 |

the portions were very generous. The beet, orange, feta salad was creative and nicely dressed. The boeuf Bourguignon was cooked very intensely to almost black--the classic preparation I think. Staff very attentive the chocolate souffle was just ok, and they brought the whip cream on same plate so it was warm, too bad as the cold whip cream with the pear tart was truly delicious

Amazing!

By 4redwine |

Incredible food and service and the wine list was extensive! We made reservations as it is a small venue. We were seated promptly and then it was ON! Excellent service and one of the best meals I have ever had. Next time you have a special occasion and want to be spoiled make a reservation!

another wonderful meal

By westlinn |

I ate here twice the week I was in Los Angeles, Consistency is all I can say. Eaten here close to a hundred times. Service is top notch, food is wonderful and the always good. thanks for NOT changing a thing in all of these years.

Fantastic Service

By Ann S |

We have been here about 30 times and have had a fantastic experience every time. I am a vegan and they always made me something special I could eat. The service is 5 star both at a table or even if you dine at the bar. It is a small place. It is such an inviting place that it is one of 3 restaurants we go to if we have any special occasion. Everyone I have been there with has loved their food. It can be pricey but well worth it!

Eh, it was OK. Not much flavor

By trilobite01 |

$50 steaks should have a lot more flavor. It wasn't bad, just nothing too exciting. I would go back if invited but wouldn't go out of my way. The steak actually seemed like a thawed out Omaha steak.

Disappointed Disrespected and Displeased

By goingpublic |

1. Disappointed: My young adult daughter and I have dined at numerous restaurants with impressive reputations. Mistral's is NOT one of them. The French onion soup was average as was the cappellini with tomatoes and linguini with cajun shrimp. In fact, the shrimp was overcooked. The chocolate souffle, however, was fabulous! As far as the service, it took forever to be served our entrees! And, after we were served, the same waiter constantly squeezed between our table and the adjacent table when he did NOT necessarily have to do so, causing the waiter's rear end to be only a few inches from our entrees. Unpleasant! Unnecessary! Unappreciated! 2. Disrespected: I presented a $125 gift certificate that I had purchased in a silent auction to benefit a charity a year earlier. No expiration date. The owner approached our table and asked me how and where I happened to acquire the certificate. Insulted? Yes! I provided an explanation to the owner that was apparently acceptable. However, the owner indicated his displeasure that I did not order enough food to use up the entire $125 certificate. I requested that he charge the tip to my credit card. He told me he could not do so and suggested that I return with a tip at a later date, adding that he would remember me! 3. Displeased: What do you think? Immensely!

GREAT Birthday venue

The atmosphere was quiet and the staff was extremely attentive. The maî·tre d' was exceptional !! Escargot were perfect and properly served in the shell. Lamb chops were delicious and so tender. It was a wonderful evening and we will return the next time in LA

Sweet breads to die for

By westlinn |

I have eaten here many many times. Was there on a weds night and the had sweet breads as a special appetizer. Had mine prepared with a brown sauce with some fresh mushrooms. SOOOO GOOOOOD. Been a while since I was swept away. Had the bone in prime rib eye afterwards. Place is always excellent.

Hoping for a special evening

By David W |

After a second confirmation that this was a double birthday dinner, the staff and owner completely forgot the occasion. The food was excellent, the noise level incredibly high and the service at the table was good. May returning but unlikely. SO disappointed.,

Burning sensation...

By GuyJonLA |

Used to go here all the time when I was an executive at the studios. On a whim, the wife and I drove over from our home in the hills. The place was the same other than a new extension into the parking lot. The food was also not the issue. What we got was reasonably good. What was deeply disappointing, injurious, and incredible was the service as well as the follow-up. Shortly after we sat down (in the parking lot addition), a waiter (or busser) behind me poured red hot coffee down my back. I think he tripped (a parking lot is not a dance floor) while carrying a large pot of it on a tray. It was so hot and unexpected, however, it felt like I'd been stabbed. I somewhat comically shot up out of my seat, almost turning over the table. My wife was so surprised she literally teeter-tottered and almost fell off her chair. I suppose it was about half a cup, but it immediately burned right through my shirt (enough to get blisters the next day). Ok. So, accidents happen. I'm a big boy and a 2nd-degree burn, and a stained shirt is not the end of the World. I'm also relatively easy to please. A glass of wine and a bit of empathy go a long way in my book. What was incredible was the reaction or lack thereof from either the staff or management. Our waiter did eventually mutter an apology but only after I complained about the total lack of reaction. He then begrudgingly suggested he bring me some ice. This arrived sometime later in a plastic shopping bag. I'm not exactly a giant baby, but when I applied the ice I groaned a bit. The waiters' response. "Yeah, buddy...nothing like a nice bag of ice huh?" That was a bit perplexing. Anyway. That was it. Nothing else. The manager/owner (Henry) later turned up and asked us how everything was and if we needed any more bread. I was sitting hunched over with a shopping bag of ice pressed up against my back dribbling all over the floor, (the ice, not me). Maybe he thought that was normal? It was a warm evening. Regardless, my response was suitably icy. We asked for the check, paid, and fled before something else damaged us further. Ok. So, the next day I can't quite get over the experience and I'm a little pissed about the stain all over my nice dress shirt so, against my wife's always better judgment, I called Henry and left a message. He called back and was actually very understanding! He offered to replace the shirt. Even offered to treat us to dinner! I felt a lot better. I told my wife Henry was great! I was going to send him a bill for a new shirt, we were getting a free feed! She smiled sagely and told me the proof was in the pudding... Sadly, she was correct. It's been weeks since I sent the bill for a new shirt. Crickets. I feel kinda cheap chasing down a shirt but surely Henry hasn't forgotten? Or is the proof indeed in the Mistral pudding? Talk is cheap nowadays and telling people what they maybe want to hear and then doing nothing seems to be the thing...so goes Mistral. Shame. I remember it back in the day. It was a great place. Was...

Reliable French Food in a Good Restaurant

By BackinthUK |

I've ate here a number of times over the past few years and it's consistently reliable - so reliable that I almost always order the same food, french onion soup (hearty, tasty and done right) and the pepper steak which has an excellent sauce and some of the best french fries you'll ever get. Wine list is solid and not over-priced. If you're early or want to, you can sit at the bar and get a good cocktail. I'll be back - I need to try something different though!

Rich Beautiful Restaurant

By Ann T |

Off and on, as valley residents, we've visited Mistral and never had a disappointing meal. It is a little richer than my style of eating lately (we tried it again with friends after not going for many years) - but there are a few favorite dishes still on the menu that I enjoy. I love the chicken with garlic - just so complex and flavorful - and the fish dishes are always perfectly well prepared. The steaks are delicious, for those that like that - probably one of the best places to get one. The wine list has lots of good choices, and my husband says their martini's are among the best anywhere. The decor is classy and clean, although it can get a little noisy. The staff is always attentive, friendly and helpful. The prices reflect its upscale nature and the quality of the food, so it's not a place we go all the time, but we are happy to say we feel it has survived at top level for 20+ years!

Just okay for anyone who knows anything about French cuisine

By jeff b |

The wine list is the best feature of this spot, though not inexpensive. French onion soup was watery, escargots were overwhelmed by a super abundance of garlic, dinner entrees were fine but not memorable, chocolate soufflé was all texture no flavor. The room is very noisey and the crowd is decidedly older like they have been coming here for years. One and done

Yummmmmeeeeee!!

By 73891 |

A little loud, but otherwise a 10+ Attention to detail in a contemporary setting that's worth noting. 6 of us and everything was perfect. Escargot - outstanding Stupid little plate of French Fries - outstanding Exceptional staff and everyone seems to have worked there for over 20 years - and it shows. Everyone works together making service seamless and flawless. When's the last time you noticed how capable a bus-boy was?? The ONLY detraction would be for someone who has a problem with background noise . . . from a former New Yorker, it is New York LOUD!

Charming evening

By awinrm |

A great neighborhood bistro / restaurant. Simple wood paneled walls, 4 beautiful chandeliers. The food is delicious, basically steak, chicken, fish.....but the sauces and preparation make it truly a French delight. A little noisy when busy....tables tend to close to each other.

Amazing

This is a great place for foodies and great service. Very quaint and definitely a gem of a restaurant for couples or having dinner with friends. The steak is great!

Lovely French Bistro

By Bill T |

Henri Abergel has created a a wonderful French restaurant on the east side of Sherman Oaks. The feel is like a NYC or Chicago deco retaurant - elegant yet not stuffy. Everything on the menu is great - especially the Panko Crusted John Dory, all of the steaks (try them Echalottes), Lamb Chops and the Rosemary Garlic Chicken. Great cicktails and you can take the whole restaurant down for private parties. Raul is the Maitre'de.

Not great on my first trip

By golfbob |

Based on the excellent reviews and always looking for a top notch restaurant in studio city to avoid the drive to beverly hills I tried Mistral last night. I ordered the caesar salad and it came light on dressing and long on salt. Next came the lamb ordered medium came well done. So my meal was a complete waste. The room was nice and the service excellent. As a frequent visitor to Paris I didn't feel like others that I was in a bistro in Paris. To me it felt like a restauarnt on Ventura Blvd. The owner or manager was there all throughtout my meal and since I dine early maybe there were three tables occupied, The reviews said they make you feel like a regular even on your first trip. This was totally false he didn't come over once and ignored us. He didn't say how's your meal etc. Totally ignored us and I am not a jean wearing, baggy pants hipster with a baseball hat on backwards. I am a mature adult in a business suit the kind of customer you might want to cultivate. I will give this restauarnt one more chance before writing it off.

Dressed up and fun in old school Sherman Oaks

By BRTStark22 |

Food-5 service-5 atmosphere-4 The tomatoes were 100% ripe and this was in the late fall. Most restaurants can't get this right in the summer. The ahi tuna nicoise salad had big rare pieces on it that were huge for a lucks lunch. The service wore ties and bow ties were very well trained and were happy to have you in their service rather than making you feel lucky to be there. It looks like an old school LA upscale bar restaurant. great place to go to be treated as a regular. There were about three different tables that you could tell were long time loyal customers. Great place to go for an old fashioned cocktail and a great meal.

Tasty French style cuisine

By Tiana H |

Not exactly like a bistro in Paris, but not bad at all for a place in the Valley. Servers were much like servers in Europe, very attentive. The manager chatted with us for a bit to ensure that we had enjoyed our meal. I had duck that was cooked PERFECTLY and the side dishes were good. Perfect amount of food- had just enough room left to have a dessert. ;) The only drawback was the noise level inside- it was very crowded, and this detracted from what should have been an intimate night out with a boyfriend.

White table cloth Joy

I was here for a business lunch and was blown away. Hard to imagine a lunch that stays in your memory, but this one did. From the service - spot on - to the food - excellent to the ambiance. This place has been here for years and there is a reason why. I'm gussing it has a lot to do with the Owner, Henry. He came by and said "hi" during our meal. Because this was a business lunch, I went "light" with a soup and salad. Pea soup and a "Green Goddess" salad. My expectations were low. Ha. The soup was sublime...and so was the salad. I'm sorry that I can't review more of the menu - I will definately be back - but that iw what I ordered on this day. It was satisfying, surprising and just what the doctor ordered for this lunch. They were both "specials" that day, and I have to say they were special. The food I saw landing around me made me wish I could have more. Give this place a try. It must be awesome at night.

A restaurant where Chicken is the Star !

By Jeff H |

While most would suggest you don't order chicken in a restaurant, I'm a contrarian. The Chicken Mistral, which come either with a Garlic Rosemary Sauce or a Dijon Mustard Sauce are fantastic. My friend has the New York steak and really likes it. The soups, salads and desserts are fantastic. I would order a Chocolate Soufflé if you haven't had one before at Mistral, it's special. Enjoy !

We discovered a hidden dining gem...

By Monalisa43 |

I was visiting family in LA for the Thanksgiving weekend and after a long day of shopping, we discovered this hidden gem which is literally less than 10 minutes from my family's home in the Valley. This French bistro's food, service and atmosphere were collectively blown away amazing. The portions are generous, creatively plated and impressively flavourful. Mitral is quite the dining experience and when I next return to LA this will most certainly top my list of dining option.

An Elegant Restaurant

By Hugh L |

An elegant French Bistro. Almost a contradiction. I have been going to this restaurant for 30 years and so like jb says in his review is true, I'm "decidedly older". Wonderful salads, followed by steak tartare with pomme frite and then a wonderful chocolate soufflé. A tad on the expensive side but not bad for a memorable experience.

Delicious. Elegant. Quiet. Seductive.

By AndreaMichaels1214 |

I have been dining at Mistral for years. Whether for dinner or lunch it is elegant and lovely, gracious service, quiet for conversation and the food is always perfect. Best hamburgers EVER, and the amuse bouche is amazing. From steak to a mango/calamari salad, phenomenal onion soup...what can I say, you simply cannot go wrong

Leave it to the Valet to ruin your date

By Raul C |

After a lovely night with my partner and I. We were yelled at by the Valet for parking on a public street. The older so-called gentlemen called us dumb for parking on a street then threaten to call the cops, as if we were doing something wrong. Place is a joke.

hidden jewel

By Valerie H |

You must look closly for Mistral as you drive along ventura blvd, but finding it is worth it. the Cuisine is French Bistro with choices of fish/seafood, chicken, lamb, beef and veal. The food is consistently excellent and the service supurb. Raul, the maitre 'D is enthusiastic, welcoming and all the wait staff are attentive. This is a place to relax and enjoy the ambiance of France. You feel you have left the Valley for the continent. Conversation fills the restaurant and reservations are a must. Let them know of a special event or need; They will meet it. One of the best French Cafe's around LA.

A Trip to France

By Michael M |

Without a doubt this is my favorite restaurant. The service, decor, and menu all make you think that you are at a Bistro in Paris. From the warm greeting to the wonderful table service you always feel like your their favorite customer, The food is excellent and just that would be enough to return again and again. This is what a Bistro should be, whether it a special dinner or just a meal away from home.

Bistro at it best in the Valley

By Michael P |

A great neighborhood bistro, star studded and local celebrities can be seen here. Its French Bistro all the way, noisey buzz. plenty of garlic, and fine french food served causally. Great date and couples spot. Fish, steak and all dishes are prepared fresh - no fast preparation here. Great wine list and bar so have fun, never a bad meal. Service can be spotty as tables are close together but private enough for a romantic evening. I always love the steak and pomme frites leave the spot Jazzed UP. Early in the week is better for spotting celebrities and a quite meal. Friday and Saturday reservations are a must ! Drop ins may have to sit at the bar - valet parking of course. Go Go as it one of east valley's best experience.

A bit of France in Sherman Oaks

By flipperdipper171 |

I have been to Los Angeles many times, and have often felt that most of the restaurants were slightly overrated. Some friends invited us to Mistral, and it proved to be the exception that I had been hoping for. The restaurant is charming, has an elegant feel, and the atmosphere is quite romantic. An excellent wine list, superb, friendly service, and a refined atmosphere were a prelude to a superb dinner. I ordered the steak au poivre, and it was served with a lovely salad and absolutely delicious bread. The steak was perfectly done, with a light, flavorful sauce and really good French fries. My wife had lamb chops, equally delicious, and done with a delightful sauce. My friend also had the steak, his wife a Bronzino, which she declared established a new standard for fish in her mind. We shared a wonderful dessert. Well worth the rather modest price for this quality of food. An absolute must revisit on our next California trip.

5 star valley Bistro

By Michael P |

French Bistro with a fine dinning ambiance. Food is outstanding and the buzz is high as tables are close together. Kitchen is very refined and the menu specials are always interesting. Raul in the front of the house is in a class by himself. Reservations are a must but you can eat at the Bar. Sports fans there is TV hanging from the ceiling. We had the Lamb chops that were perfect and the filet was fork only tender. Only negative is the buzz as it is always crowded - seating's 6:30 and 8:15 pm. But they never rush you. $25 corkage fee and they do decant your wine. Martini's are bartender specialty also. All in it is $85 to $115 per person but worth every penny. B T W pomme frites are great as a table appetizer as they also provide a lite puff pastry with your drinks.

Food & Service

Service was very good, food was yummy. Restaurant has a full bar. Level of noise is moderate. Meters on the street and Valet parking available. Everything we ordered was very tasty.

A NYC Vibe

By whocareswhoiam |

This restaurant has a very NYC vibe. The bar, the wood, the intimate dining room, and especially the attire and style of the old school servers - it all seems like those small restaurants in New York City that the west side locals favor. Very much like the style and classy atmosphere, once you walk in the door you forget that you are on Ventura Blvd. The servers are polished professionals, attentive. The food is excellent, very nice salads that are large enough to share. Quality steaks that are prepared perfectly to order. The lamb is excellent too. This is one of our favorite restaurants along Ventura Blvd. It is expensive but certainly not overpriced. We have dined here for lunch and dinner, always excellent service and an overall wonderful dining experience.

A little bit of Paris and New York in Los Angeles

By Bill T |

Innocuous from the front but a big wow once you are inside. Feels like what it is - a classy French restaurant that pours a mean drink and offers up great food. Favorite dishes: Garlic Chicken, any Steak, Panko Halibut and the Escargot is out of this world. Come hungry and come often! And mak a reservation - this place can be packed on a Tuesday night at 8 pm!
