Small regional italian restaurant with excellent food. BYOB, Offering a great pick your own prix fixe menu, 4 courses for only $40.00. A great deal! Starter, Pasta, Main Course and Deserts. Can't go wrong. Chef did an awesome job, food is perfectly seasoned and no salt & pepper on the table, Good sign that the Chef is confident in his work. A must try!

This is a small, Italian BYOB restaurant in the Northern Liberties section of the city. The food is good, although the choices are limited. Go for the 4 course menu for $40. It includes appetizer, a pasta course, an entree and dessert. The portions were adequate, but not large except for the whole fish of the day. The mussels appetizer was good, but the red sauce had a touch of cream and the mussels were small. The pasta were OK. except for the gnocchi, which were excellent. The whole fish, which was borado, does not come filleted, but our waiter did it table side. Being a party of 7, the dessert was served family style, with two plates of 4 tiny portions of chocolate cake, cheesecake, tiramisu and another vanilla cake with lemon sauce. I found only the chocolate cake to be worth the calories.

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened...great food and of course value at the time. Back then it was a top 15 restaurant in Philly...now see where it has fallen to. Service while friendly was in-attentive. At no time during the 4 course meal after the runner placed the plates in front of us, did the waitress come and ask how the plate was! In fact during the pasta course since no salt or pepper at the table, i aske the other server for a pepper mill - 5 minutes later no pepper mill....I had to get up, go back to the station where both and and our waitress were, and ask for the pepper mill. He handed it to me and i walked back to the table and sat down. This dinner was for a borthday dinner/present from my friends. Okay, you get the gist of the in-attentive service, now to the food. My first course was sweetbreads which was excellent and perfectly prepared. My pasta course (sans pepper mill) was tagliatelle with chicekn liver. Not enough of the wonderfull pasta and way too many chicken livers for the amount of pasta - flavor unbalanced. I have always enjoyed the roasted whole fish in the past, however this preparation (not stuffed with herbs nor topped with a compound butter) was bland, flavorless, and unseasoned, and topped with innocuous bread crumbs - I sat there waiting for our waitress to come to the table and had to ask the runner to ask her to come to the table - the fish went back to the kitchen. I asked her for something quick and she suggested my second choice which was the skate and the skate was, as always, good. Then came the unimpressive dessert round - which i understand they do not make in house (of if the do, they need to find another someone else). Selection was uninteresting...Tira Misu - I make from scratch with genoise cake so i never like it out (tasted it however and it was disappointing), an apple crostata which I ordered, was just okay, one of the guests offered me a taste of the ricotta cheesecake - graham cracker crust? Come on... a ricotta cheesecake with graham cracker crust in a supposedly great Italian restaurant! Anyone who knows anything about ricotta cheesecake knows that it should be a pastry crust at least made even better with either lemon or orange zest in the crust - another loser on the dessert menu. Cappucino was delicious, but again since the server never came to the table, had to ask a runner for more coffee. Free shots of sambucca at least were given! Honestly, the quality and service has deteriorated. This is also the third time that the shef/owner was not there. Perhaps he needs to spend more time at this flagship rarther than time at his other operations. Very disaponinted. For three more dollars, you can get a price fixe at Zahav and get an excellent meal with excellent service.

I've been here a few times over the years and it remains a favorite BYOB. It's usually pretty crowded and here is a big warning for the place: when full, the noise level is exceptionally high. Service is very good and the food - particularly the $35 Turista menu - is also very good. But it's not perfect. Salt was a little heavy and you had a sense that the kitchen wasn't worried about the final detail. An example: the mussels in white sauce came out with some hot, and some not. But the the sauce was absolutely delicious. What are you going to do with that? For a nice Italian mean, in a cool location, I'd definitely go again. it's worth the price. But it's no longer on my short list of top Philly restaurants.

Great BYO

This restaurant is a touch of Italy in a hip area of Philadelphia. It is BYO but located near one of the best State Stores in Pennsylvania. The food is wonderful. My tiny raviolis stuffed with chicken liver in a balsemic sauce with raisins was delectable. My fish en papier and flowerless chocolate cake were scrumptious. We went for the Pris Fix which was a bargain. My companion needs a gluten free diet and she was thrilled with all their gluten free choices including wonderful bread. She was offered multiple gluten free pastas with most of the sauces. The service was excellent. Loved it.

We went last night with two other couples and couldn't have been more pleased. Food is as great as others have said - four courses chosen off the menu for $37, without side dishes. The crepe stuffed with ditalini was especially good as a pasta course; the arugula side dish was nicely seasoned, and I wished I could have had more, rather than having to share it! Everything my companions had was very good, they said. I had the pompano whole; brought it home to pick on for lunch on Sunday. Service was quick; our brought-in wine was great, but if you forget, there's a huge grand state store right across the street. Great deal! BE aware: we made reservations a MONTH in advance for a Saturday night, and even that far ahead, the only tables they had free were for 5:15. Only slight jag was, we were asked to vacate after two hours; others were waiting. I was surprised a bit at that, but only fair, I guess. And the noise is deafening - perhaps they could hang some fabrics or tapestries on the walls to absorb some. But the food and service were fabulous and we will definitely be back. Don't tell too many other people; I want to be able to get back in! Highly recommended! (And, really, it's not in South Philly; it's sort of Northern Liberties, but actually West Kensington. Who woulda thought?)

We all had one of the tastiest and innovative meals ever. Great selection to choose from even though it was a prix fixe menu, there was something there for everyone from Filet Mignon to Pasta. Excellent service, Our server was Very animated and attentive, she made suggestions when we asked, and they were all on the money. The value is extraordinary, especially the Turista prix fixe, its a 4 course meal. Only down side is the noise level it is bad. You really cannot carry on a conversation with the person next to you without shouting loudly. So be prepared to enjoy with ear plugs

Angela greated us at the door with a warm welcome that show Philadelphia is the City Of Brotherly Love. After being seated, Ian was introduced as our Waiter. What a pleassure. The owner , Peter came out to our table to make sure we were enjoying our meal. We gave him some advice. You need to come to South Alabama and OPEN a restaurant. Wow, what a wonderful meal. It is BYOB and there is a fabulous wine store across the street. The food is amazing and we eat at alot of wonderful restaurants. The food and selections were overwhelming. Have the Touristo Meal. Just order whatever Ian suggests and you wont be dissapointed. Everything was wonderful and it is reasonably priced. We visit Philly a few times a year and this is our new Must Go Spot .P1S1

I invited a party of 13 to Modo Mio on a Saturday evening. We chose the Menu Turista @ $40 per person. Within our group, for Antipasti, I saw: Cozze (Mussels), Capasante ( Scallop), Calamari alla Griglia ( Squid), Meatball and a daily special: Pork on arugula. For Pasta: Pappardelle (pasta ribbons on lamb), Lasagna Bologonese, Agnolotti (rabbit ravioli). For Secondi: Bistecca Siciliana (ribeye), Short Rib, Pesce Arrosto (whole fish), Branzino ( Branzino filet), Involtini (duck breast) and Veal Scallopini. This was followed by an assortment of small desserts. Everything was delicious. The portions were perfect sized. The service (our waiter "G") was impeccable. He even asked ahead of time if anyone had dietary issues. This is the first time goiing out with this group in over 30 years that I didn't hear one negative comment about anything. Everyone said that it was one of the best meals they ever had.

I had written a review a couple of years ago based on my experience. I have been going to Modo Mio since its opening. Well, they are back to where the were and should be. Service is attentive and helpful, food is great once more. Buon Appetito!

Thank you modo mio- your $35 tasting menu did not disappoint, fabulous time, yes, your restaurant can be noisy, but so worth it, Loved that grilled octopus, gnocchi, and desserts were yummy. with three of us we got to taste 12 items, well actually 14 with crusty bread, and liver pate complimentary app. oh,that you make the bread, pasta and desserts is impressive. We are smitten.

I love all types of Italian food, gourmet, rustic and regional specific. When I am visiting a larger city I try a select the best Italian restaurant to dine. This is no easy task with all the various review media options available today. Modo Mio was consistently in the top 10 in Philly with some divergent reviews but it was worth a try. If you happen to be in the area of Philly that it is located, which does not happen to be center city, it is worth a try without to high of expectations. We had to take a longer uber ride to get to Modo Mio and it was not worth the trip. Everything was a little off, from the overbearing servers to the over seasoned dishes to the poorly cooked meat. The price is very fair $80 for two people and four courses each but I would rather pay double and have better food. The decor and service ware is very cheap but I knew that going in from the reviews and that doesn't affect the food taste. In the case with Modo Mio the cheap interior of the restaurant matches the average quality of the food.

My wife and I have been going to Modo Mio many times since it opened a number of years ago. The quality of the food remains extremely high, with careful attention to all components of its 4 course Tourista menu, a $35 bargain. Noise can be a problem on crowded weekends, and one often must remind the waitstaff to "hold the salt", which is sometimes used too liberally. But those problems do not do much to detract from a perennially excellent, creative, soul-satisfying meal. Try the gnocchi or other fabulous pasta dishes.

Now the place doesn't look like much from the outside but my god is the food incredible. You'll love it here if you like fresh food that's different and is full of flavor. They are truly masterful at combining spices and herbs to make amazing flavor that really sets them aside from other italian restaurants. The pasta is homemade and delicious . Plus it's a byob and is across street from spirits store . They start out by giving u the chefs special apps which both times I went were amazing. I had the steak the first time I went that had an over easy egg on top as well as capers among other things and it was different and filled with flavor. I also have had the seafood pasta and that was seafood done right ;). I highly recommend this place if u want authentic fresh and complex dishes. If your a chicken finger and fried person however u may want to try somewhere else. Also in case your worried about price it is really reasonably priced especially for the quality and size of the portions. For two people the bill came to about 65 . Included apps and entrees. Well worth it!

Highlights of Modo Mio: We called for a reservation, they were full, but still graciously accommodated our party of 3 at a nice table outside 4 courses for $34 Each course was perfectly portioned and perfectly seasoned (amazing mussels and rabbit ravioli) At the end of the meal, they offered us complimentary sambuca. Seriously, this was the proverbial icing on the cake for me. Well done, Modo Mio. I will be thinking about that meal for a long time!!

So I guess you should give a second thought to a restaurant when the waiter describes the chef philosophy as "salt forward" . There were three of us dining we each had two courses. Everything was well prepared with interesting flavor but each dish was very salty. We didn't finish anything. I asked the waiter about the salt forward philosophy and he stated that they get a lot of complaints about the food being too salty but the chef would not change his methods so they came up with salt forward. To be fair the restaurant was packed and others review it well. I can't figure that out. We'll never go back.

We were 17 people, not enough food, food was warm not hot, not enough dessert, too loud. It is not served family, small portions.

A big, old fashioned, Italian Sunday dinner awaits you on Sugo Sundays at Modo Mio. The bread is crusty on the outside and soft in the middle served with an Antipastsa of grilled veggies, beans, meats and more. Then the entrees arrive. Meatballs, sausage, pasta, gnocchi, chicken and pork. Bring the whole family and BYOB. End the meal with a light salad and a tray of desserts. Yum and Fun. Just like grandma's house. Remember cash only.

Modo Mio is a BYOB that offers a full a la carte menu. We have been there numerous times and always order their 4-course prix fix menu. It's a solid performer and allows us to sample a number of their delicious dishes. We went there with five people on 8 January 2015. The waitress was curt and not very attentive. And a few of their dishes were not so good (the whole fish was actually pretty bad). If But, here is the thing. The support staff is so excellent that we hardly noticed the waitress. And all of the other dishes (especially an excellent steak with egg) were so good that we quickly forgot the mediocre ones. Any restaurant that I have visited frequently has had an off night. But, when you can be off and still deliver quality food and service, you deserve a high ranking and loyal patronage. Modo Mio gets mine. One note: If you go with six or more in your party, expect a) that everyone will have to eat the prix fix and b) tip will be included.

I am not a resident of the Philadelphia area, but visit often to see family. We have had dinner at Modo Mio at least 6 times in the last year or so, and have never been disappointed! Love the fact that it is BYOB. The service has always been outstanding, and the food even better! We were so impressed that we recently used Modo Mio as the restaurant for our son and daughter in-law's rehearsal dinner. We used the entire restaurant and they customed designed a menu just for us, using all of our favorites from past menus. The staff was very accomodating and kind, and made this special occasion one to remember! I would very highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Philadelphia. Easy to get to by taxi; just a short drive from Center City. However, you will definitely need a reservation, as it is always busy!

My wife and I went on the Sunday after thanksgiving and found ourselves all alone at Modo Mio, but enjoyed ourselves quite a bit. The Sunday menu was amazing. The muscles marinara were the best I've ever had and perfect for dipping the homemade bread. If I were to nip-pick I would say some of the food tends to be on the salty side, but not enough to be "too salty" but the flavors of their red gravy is out of this world.. probably the salt!

This is the second time visiting with friends. There was 8 of us each time and the service/food was excellent each time. The first time we ordered from menu and the last time we went on a Sunday where you get a 4 course meal for $35. but you don't pick from the menu. They bring out an appetizer, salad, pasta, entre and dessert and it's served family style. More than one of each so you have 3 or 4 items to eat from each course. Very small and noisy but always a good meal and great time.

Nice room and staff. Bland tasteless food. Marinated mushrooms had too much lemon. I smelled garlic but they didn’t put it in the food. Bean soup had no flavor. The clams in the linguini dish were minescule and the dish flavorless. Very disappointed and do not Reccommend.

You know the one...a small restaurant that is away from the tourist hangouts and chains. A restaurant that has a simple exterior but walking through the door takes you to another place where the food and atmosphere is unforgettable. We found it on Girard Ave. in Philly on a recent girls' trip--Modo Mio. It was a trip through the tastes of Italy from northern all the way down to Sicily. The prixe fixe menu was the train ride through The Italian country side beginning with lingua Parmesan (beef tongue), a memorably flavorful rigatoni with bursts of sweet, salty and spicy and a whole fish entree simply made so the flavor of the Black Sea bass could be enjoyed. What is a trip to Italy without the interaction with those lovely people who live in the moment? Modo Mio has that as well. Richie, the manager, made us all feel like Queens for the day and Chef/owner Peter was generous, affable and wanted to make sure we enjoyed his creations. We are planning a Christmas trip to Philly and will definitely return to this gem. Did I mention the Italian Sunday Dinner menu, the fact that it is BYO, and it is possible to experience fine dining for $40? See you again soon Modo Mio!

This was my first time at Modo Mio. My brother and his fiancé have been many times, since they reside in Fishtown. I live in NJ and they have talked about their meals so many times previously, that I couldn't wait to try it. We went on Sunday night with a group of 6. We brought our own wine. Sunday dinner is a prix fixe menu of four courses for only $37 each. First course was an antipasti, (and bread) second course was two pastas (lasagna and rigatoni), third course was an assortment of amazing meats (meatballs, chicken, pork, sausage), fourth course was salad. Each course was better than the next! Then they brought out dessert and complimentary Sambuca shots. The staff was awesome. The restaurant is not the largest, so it's best to make a reservation.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Philadelphia. The food is delicious with a great mix of traditional Italian with a fresh approach. It is a great bargain with the four course option and with the BYOB makes a great date night. I highly recommend it. The service is always good and they take reservations.

After a long drive we were getting hungry so we went on line for a Italian food and found this one We call ahead and they were very accommodating Food was very good on the small portion side for the price Very attentive Decor needs to changed up out dated vey bad Would I go back ? Not sure But the food was good

I ate here with 3 others. The service was great. The place was noisy as noted by others and some of the food was way too salty for my taste. All 4 of us had the Turista which is a good value and lots of choices. My wife cannot eat hot seasoned food. She ordered the calamari and it was too hot for her. I traded with her and it was indeed very spicy. For the main course I ordered the skate. It was extremely salty and was very spicy. The spicy may have come from some italian meat that was in with the fish. Skate is an unusual dish for me and i wanted to judge it against other fish dishes but with the salt and spice, it could have been anything. The other 2 people in our party enjoyed their meals and had nothing but good things to say.

Some of my girlfriends and I went here on a tip from a business associate. It was hard to get the ladies to agree to go but, wow, what a pleasant surprise! The restaurant is small and unassuming so the ladies were not especially impressed...that is, until we started eating the food! We all had the priced fixed menu which is so great because you still get to choose from the menu. Every course was delicious. I mean wonderful complicated flavors so unlike other places I've been that I must go back for more. Great quality at what I considered a reasonable price. One of the ladies who was well traveled said it was one of the best meals she's ever had. I was stuffed and satisfied. Every thing was delicious but I especially liked the crispy risotto. The staff was friendly, the service was good. We had a great time. It was pretty crowded for a Tuesday night so I would make reservations if you want to try it.

Went last night with our sons and their girlfriends to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday! The whole experience was wonderful, from the courteous service and behavior of everyone - the waiter was charming and knowledgeable and while the place was hopping he never rushed us at all!! the bread was great, the service impeccable, the four course dinner was perfect - the sizes just right, and really, it was one of the nicest dining experiences we have had in Philly - our beloved home town. (well, we live in the burbs now but still...) Every item from the skate to the mussels was lovely, simple, tasty, intriguing....every single item..and the plate of dolci at the end - wow!! Great meal! Great place!!! Could not recommend it more highly. Enjoy!

Three of us had an early dinner on a Tuesday evening, the service was spot on. Helpful, professional and pleasant as usual. Had the mussels which were excellent, the lasagna which was the best I have ever had ANYWHERE, husband had the steak which was really good, brother and I had the zuppa di pesce. Excellent choice. I love this place, food and service are excellent every time. Cannot ask for more than that. Well, yes I can ask, how about opening a place in Wilmington? We are desperate here for good food.

Modo Mio is closed but in its place is Cadence a new restaurant and one you should visit. It has received many accolades from best new restaurant... to see and read the story google Cadence Restaurant Philadelphia. .

The six of us traveled from the Jersey shore for a brothers and wives meal. We're loving the Northern Liberties area of Philly and have been sampling the many great new restaurants and taverns. I'm glad I also read the Yelp reviews on this great place, because there are quite a few negatives here on Tripadvisor. Unfathomable how someone could pan this great place. The value is extraordinary, especially the Turista prix fixe at $35.00 per person. Take note that for parties of 6 or more, they automatically add a 20% tip (which we added to because the service was so stellar). Because the value is so good, lots of young people eat there. Young people make noise. Get over it. This place is a hipster magnet. Anthony Bourdain would be repulsed. We were amused. We all tasted each others' meals, and the elbows were a flying. The menu is expansive and it allows for several visits. There are several specials, and they often change their menu. The bread is amazing. Hard crust, yeasty inside, true artisan bread. If someone threw a loaf of this at my head, it would knock me unconscious. My kind of bread! The olive oil was infused with porcini mushrooms, with a couple of dollops of homemade ricotta. Very very good. For the first course, I had the mashed potatoes with crabmeat. I almost changed my mind on ordering this, and I'm glad I didn't. More crabmeat than potatoes and very rich, almost like a crabmeat imperial. Delicious. I also tasted the beet salad, which was fresh and earthy, as well as the snails (amazing) and mussels, which were served in one of the best broths, maybe THE best broth I have ever tasted. The heavily crusted bread was built to dunk in this savory concoction. Beware that if you order spicy, you get spicy. For the pasta dish, I had the lasagna bolognese, which was topped with the sunny side up egg. Great textures, and a transcendent tomato sauce. Also tasted the pasta with chicken livers and truffles, which was also tasty. For the entrée, I had the veal cheek. This was one of the richest meat dishes I have ever eaten. It was amazingly tender, and in a brown reduction. This was a smallish portion, but so rich that it was one of those rare occasions where I couldn't finish what was on my plate. The desserts were off the hook, ESPECIALLY the flourless chocolate cake. They brought us a sampler, which was great for a table of six. I asked them to bring us two of the chocolate cake and to leave another off. The waitress brought us, instead, eight desserts, including two of the chocolate cake, with no upcharge. The desserts were amazing, and the chocolate cake was like biting into a deep, dense, dark chocolate piece of fudge. Two bites of this, and I was catatonic. Our waitress was truly memorable. El Oh El Ay Lola. Very animated and attentive, she made suggestions when we asked, and they were all on the money. She even offered to swap anything out if we didn't like it. Who does that? Lola does. We swapped nothing, though, as the entire meal was delicious, every bite. Can't wait to go again.

How is it this restaurant hasn't climbed to the top of the Philly reviews? My friends and I always meet here. When we travel to Paris, or Sydney, or Rome, we're often reporting back home, "It was really good, but it wasn't Modo Mio." An amazing value at $35 for a 4-course meal and BYOB to boot. Only problem is the noise level in the small restaurant. When we can't take it, we go to Monsu--same owner, also great food.

First trip out to Northern Liberties, and I felt like it was a success. Went here on a Friday night for a double date. It was easy enough to get a 9:15pm reservation about three days in advance. We wanted to try Modo Mio because we've all heard great things about it. I do think it was really good food at a superb value. We tried a range of dishes that ranged from unreal to just good. The unreal -- the sformato & flourless chocolate cake. The sformato is an appetizer that had crab in it. The crab really came through. The flourless chocolate cake was decadent. One of the best I've had. The table agreed these were the highlights of the meal. The entrees & pastas were all pretty good as well. The whole fish (I forgot what kind of fish) was cooked perfectly. The lasagna wasn't the best that I've had, but it was still tasty. If you're a pork fan, the porchetta is worth a try. This place is BYOB, so there's another plus to this restaurant. Just a heads-up that this place is cash only.

Strong 5-star recommendation. Imaginative and progressive menu. A seriously good value - 4 courses for $35/person. Nice seating for our group of 6. Easy parking and BYO - or take the El. Service was A++++. A nice alternative to Center City and easier drive from the northern suburbs. Fun for date-night or a group.

We had a fabulous dinner both nights. Great staff. Olivia was wonderful. BYOB A PLUS! Tourista menu fabulous. Get a reservation. Wine & Spirits across the street. Can't wait to come back.

Five of us Wine-Geek men dined at Modo Mio and elected to have the restaurant "just feed us". We must have sampled close to 30 dishes plus 7 desserts. Unlike most Italian style restaurants where Chefs seem to carry a common cooking style throughout the dishes, Modo-Mio diplays impressive diversity. My favorites were the Paparadelle and the veal (a creative twist on veal parm), but not being a gnocchi fan, I was impressed with the light style in an unassuming sauce. The server was sure to inform us that the bruschetta was only made approximately 4 weeks per year, only when Jersey tomatoes were available. The Bruschetta was in fact very good, but having my own supply of Jersey tomatoes, I have to report that ModoMio’s supplier in NJ can’t compare to what I have on my counter. With regard to the server, Brett was very personable, efficient and accommodating. He was knowledgeable of the menu and was excellent in providing a great selection of food and we kept him busy opening about 12 bottles of wine. The desserts were also delicious and I couldn’t find anything I would not eat again!

We visited Modo Mio for the first time on Saturday and were pleasantly surprised. It's a BYO, which we always appreciate. There is a fabulous liquor store directly across the street making it very convenient. Their "Turista Menu" is a great bargain. It's a 4 course meal that you order directly off the menu. Only 2 of the dinner options had an upcharge but that was understandable based on the a la carte cost of these items (lamb and the whole fish). I started with N'duja which is a spicy Calabrese sausage over a white bean cake that is topped with honeyed fresh mushrooms. The sweetness of the honey was a perfect blend with the spicy taste and the creaminess of the bean cake made it a total taste sensation. My husband had the mussels (also excellent) and our daughter had the "special" which was a wonderful crab salad with radicchio. The next course is a pasta dish. The Bucatini was outstanding as was the Agnolotti. The Risotto was also quite good but we favored the pasta choices. My daughter had the trout for her main course which was fabulous. I had the pork cheeks which were also outstanding. The whole fish was cooked to perfection. They say that they won't filet it but they actually did. You just need to be careful since there will always be small bones with a whole fresh fish. Desserts were very tasty. If you like chocolate, the flourless cake was moist and heavenly. The panne cotta was also very creamy and had a lovely fresh vanilla flavor. Cannot go wrong here.

We selected the tourista, which allow you to try an appetizer, pasta, entree, and dessert. It is worth the $37. The gnocchi were light. We also enjoyed the snails, tortellini, steak, and skate. The flourless chocolate was the best I've ever had, rich and creamy.

Fabulous food. Creative dishes. Just a little too loud for tables larger than 4 to talk comfortably.

This used to be a very good restaurant but that was two years ago before the hype began. The turista menu has been scaled down to thimble size proportions, the service was not bad it was terrible and the quality of food has truly gone down in the sewer.Maybe Mr Mcandrew has spread himself too thin because this was definitely not worth the drive in to the city.We had a 55 minute wait between the past course served cold(??????) and our entrees. The desserts were a joke.I am truly disappointed.

We live in NJ and my husband is not big about crossing the bridge for a meal but this is hands down our favorite restaurant. He would go every week if I said yes. The $35 price fix is perfect for a 4 course meal. It is BYOB and cash only and the menu changes fairly regularly. Although the muscles and the lasagna seem to be standard staples and you can't go wrong with either one. This is not your typical american italian restaurant. Sometimes when we look at the menu we think what are we going to order. The servers are excellent at making good recommendations and we have never had a bad meal. I would say we have been eating here almost monthly for the past year. If you have never been this is a must. Keep in mind if you want to eat there on a Friday or Saturday night you may wnat to make reservations a week ro more in advance unless you are willing to eat at 5 or 9. Keep in mind this restaurant is about the food and not necessarily the atmosphere. The tables are close together and there are hardwood floors so it is a little noisy at times.

Call early to get a reservation! This place was really, really good. The looks on the outside can be deceiving but after waiting for our table we quickly realized that this is a favorite among locals and they have a lot of repeat visitors. Now I can see why! We did the tasting menu and could not have been happier. Some of the highlights were the stuffed tortelloni with goat cheese and cauliflower. Such a weird combination but so delicious. In fact, I would have loved a huge plate of just this. Grandma's ravioli was a hit with my husband as were the veal sweetbreads. The stuffed pork entree was absolutely delicious. The fried egg on top was a great addition. Desserts were great as well. Do yourself a favor and try this place. Great service, excellent food for the money and BYOB (there is a wine store right across the street).

Some of the most amazing food I have ever had!! Very quaint and cozy byob !! Trust me if you leave hungry there is something wrong with you. Can't wait for my next visit to Modo Mio. Thank you to the staff and chefs!!!!

Really rich. Bring your appetite.

The food and service were very good, but the restaurant was so noisy on a Saturday night that we could not have a conversation with screaming. My ears are still ringing. Unfortunately, this would keep me from returning. The owners should do something to sound proof the room.

Nothing fancy, inside or out, but then again, I presume you're not coming here for architecture or furnishings. However, the chef knows what he's doing, combining complex flavors in fine Northern Italian cuisine. While the pastas and entrees are moderately price, the tasting menu at $35 is the best deal, consisting of medium sized portions (ample) of appetizer, pasta, main course and dessert. We tried the special beet and goat cheese and fried mozzarella, both delicious. For the pasta dish we had spinach ravioli and the lasagna. The lasagna was very good, although I didn't need the egg on top and the ravioli was interesting, but not something I would ever want as a main course. For entrées we had the flounder and the fish of the day, brazzino, both well prepared and seasoned. We ordered spinach as a side dish (extra $6) and it was a perfect accompaniment. The desserts were all made on premises and the ones we had were perfect. The attentive waiter offered us a complimentary sambucca to complete the meal. I also had a great bottle of 2009 Silver Oak, which bought at the large liquor mart across the street (the restaurant is BYOB). One final thing, bring cash, the restaurant takes no credit cards. Enjoy!

Picked Modo Mio over other choices based on customer reviews. Small cozy place; easy street parking (unlike South Philly locations). Very interesting Northern Italian menu so if you're looking for "typical" italian you may be disappointed. Plates somewhat small but flavorful, fresh and innovative. There is a $35 four course tasting menu that is well worth the value and without restrictions as to what you can order. Great homemade bread and complimentary sambuca. Only one salad selection though and no -not Caesar; would have liked to see a few. Service was great. Overall very good.

We will return here often. The menu listed a four course meal for under $35. We got six courses and each was wonderful! The area is undergoing a renaissance so don't be put off as you drive down Girard Avenue. This place is a delightful find. CaptMakai

We've been in Philly for about a year and a half and this was one of the best meals we've had in the city. It was the Sunday prix fixe menu, which I was uneasy about because I like to pick what eat, but everything was delicious. The highlight of the meal was the gnocchi, which was light and fluffy and incredibly tasty. The rest of the pasta was cooked perfectly. The chicken was falling off the bone and wonderfully juicy. The pork loin was incredibly tasty and tender. Dessert was also fantastic. We had the tiramisu and the panna cotta and managed to find room for both of them despite having been unable to finish everything else. The servers were attentive but not overbearing. It's BYOB and cash only, but there's a wine and spirits store across the street and an ATM nearby as well.

What other restaurant gives you a $40.00 option to choose from 4 courses 1appetizer 1 pasta 1 main course and 1 dessert and you could include specials in these choices! No others! Oh by the way the food is top notch! BYOB also so they don't gouge you on wine🍷🍷🍷🍷The best in the city !

We went here for dinner based on the number of high ratings this restaurant has received. We feel it is definitely over-rated and are disappointed in the cuisine. First the good points: the staff are attentive, friendly and competent. The portions are quite generous; there is no need for the waiter to state that the portions are on the smaller side. That was not so - they are fine. The courses are served in a timely manner; we never felt rushed at all. This is a BYOB restaurant which is nice. Now the other points: the only items that were not too salty were the desserts! This chef has a heavy hand with the salt shaker or he has lost his ability to taste sodium in his creations. And, one of our entrees - the flank steak - was well overcooked making it dry and tough. The restaurant is small and I think there are too many tables packed in to be comfortable. Also, it is not a place to take small children; they would find it confining and I don't know if there is even a menu to suit their needs. They do not take credit cards but you are told that when you call for reservations and it is clearly posted on the door too. All in all, we won't return - we don't need all that salt.

Don't miss out on this fantastic restaurant in Northern Liberties. The turista menu is $37 and you get an antipasti, pasta, entree, and dessert. There were three of us and we tried three different items in each section and all were fantastic. Especially noteworthy were the gnocchi, lasagna, veal cheek, and lamb stew. The service was fantastic. Our server was very sensitive and careful about one of our diner's gluten allergies and they were able to make most of their items gluten free. In addition, when they brought out bread and butter, as well as a complimentary crostini with a red pepper tapenade, they brought out gluten free versions as well! We were also given an additional dessert on the house, which was so nice. This is a great Italian restaurant that is a wonderful value for money and the perfect place for friends, a date, or a family evening. Oh! And it's BYO and there is a wine and spirits store right across the street. What would be better?!

Went on a Sunday when they have a special all inclusive menu. Was not disappointed! From the antipasto to the pastas to the meats to the desserts...all were great! Different, as it was family style, but enough food for a doggie bag!

There's a reason why employee "work reviews" have 4 or 5 categories . In order to be an outstanding employee you must be outstanding in all categories. The restaurant business is no different. Modo Mio hits grand slam home runs in the most important categories but can improve in a couple of the lesser ,,,The hostess was very pleasant and greeted us with a big warm smile (we felt very welcome)... The server was extremely patient and accommodating (we made some alterations to our order due to allergies) and she rolled with all the changes with a big smile,,, The menu is compact but very well thought out, you wont have any trouble finding something yummy regardless of what you're craving. The hardy bread and high quality olive oil (at the beginning) was absolutely delicious, but we had to ask for more... The Lasagna i had was outstanding ! fried egg and all (but not enough for a main). The arugula side was prepared to perfection. The "house made" Tiramisu dessert was delicious , not too sweet not too esspreso'ee (but very small) . A small however....It wouldn't take much to improve the decor ,make it a bit sexier,,,some tea candles? a fresh coat of paint? some large black and white vintage Italian prints? just saying, as well the portion sizes were on the small size for the price. All in All you will not be disappointed eating here , highly recommended !

My wife and I are regulars at Modo Mio and we have been costumers since the place opened 8 years ago. Situated between Northern Liberities and Fishtown, it offers great italian dishes with a twist from chef Peter McAndrews. His pastas are inventive using rabbit, sausage, beans and veal to good effect. The main courses well done especially his fish and veal dishes. Desserts are wonderful way to close out the meal and then the complimentary sambuca. Oh, nearly forgot, the price is right. More than a good bargain.

Amazing, fun, delicious experience. Yes, it's a bit noisy and boisterous but it is a small, very well run, BYOB. The 4 course dinner for $35 is the best value we've found in years. The stuffed trout was to die for, the pasta light as air, the incredible artisan bread with olive oil and creme fraiche is just over the top. I can't wait to go back!

Visited Modo Mio for a special occasion with eight diners on a Saturday evening. Some of the diners had been to Modo Mio before, ALL of the diners are planning to visit again as the entire experience was so good. First, since I was the planner for the group, I spoke directly with Chef McAndrews to tell him about our needs and this special occasion. He was very supportive and helpful, assuring me that there would be careful attention given to requests, even suggesting that If we had especially enjoyed a particular dish during a past visit, to let him know so he would be sure to prepare it for us. On Saturday evening, we were cheerfully greeted at the door and promptly seated. A party of eight means that everyone selects from the Turista menu at a price of $40.00 for four courses. It's a great value! The server will tell you that because there are four courses for this price, they "cut back" on the size of the portions. Perhaps they do, but you will not know it, as each dish is more than adequate and you will be quite full when you finally get up from the table! Select ANYTHING on the menu or from the specials ( 1 each from antipasti, pasta, secondi and dolce). Our server, Sean Michael, explained all the specials, answered all of our questions and made sure we were all comfortable, making recommendations for those who were undecided about what to get from all the choices. You cannot go wrong with any item on the menu. There is great attention to flavor, texture, freshly prepared ingredients and presentation. Extra kudos and happy smiles were given to the rabbit stuffed ravioli, the orrichette pasta, the seared scallop, the short ribs, the seafood stew in a broth of tomato and coconut ( oh, that broth! all you need is enough bread to catch every last drop), the duck breast. The desserts were brought out family style on a big try, enough for everyone to have a portion of five or six different dessert offerings. Panna cotta was smooth as silk, flourless chocolate torte was dense and rich, the tiramisu and the expresso items were addicting and the apple cake was worthy of a long stay accompanied by hot tea. Sean Michael even brought out a separate dessert with a candle on top to mark our celebration. Service was well paced, with waitstaff making sure wine was uncorked, water refilled, table cleaned between courses. Note- the restaurant is very very noisy and in our large party at a round table, guests could not converse comfortably with those seated more than one seat away. There is parking on the street all around the restaurant. However, BEWARE!!!!!!!!! The police and parking folks watch very carefully that you do not overstay your two hour limit ( not metered, just a sign that tells you there is a 2 hour limit for certain hours) and they ticket promptly. One of our group walked to his car and arrived six minutes late and already had a ticket. Not a friendly experience for an out of town guest in an area where it's already hard to park in a safe spot. That said, just keep an eye on your time and otherwise enjoy every delicious morsel of your meal. Modo Mio will not disappoint; it is among the very best Italian food you will have!

This was our second visit to Modo Mio, a BYOB. There is a lovely wine store a minute away, which is quite convenient. The restaurant is small, and you have to be prepared to meet people at neighbouring tables. There seemed to be a number of neighbourhood people, which just added to the atmosphere. Service was attentive, without being annoying - water was refilled promptly, and courses were well paced. We had the Turista menu - 4 courses and a great deal, particularly when you factor in the fact that you bring your own wine. As a first course, I had the grilled squid - it was a fantastic dish. Squid was tender and not over-cooked. I then had the spaghetti special for the day - full of shrimp and quite lovely. I had the steak as my main course - it was perfectly cooked and came with a fried egg on top. The only small issue with my meal was that the egg was a bit overcooked. Small issue because it did not detract from my meal overall. I suppose I could have asked for a new egg, but it just didn't seem worth it. Dessert was equally fantastic - some chocolatey concoction, served with good strong coffee. I would highly recommend a visit to Modo Mio, particulary if you enjoy the feel of a neighbourhood spot.

Four courses; $45. Even if the food wasn't that good, the price is right! But what if the food is REALLY good? What if the service is REALLY good, too? And the venue is fun? Go to the resto's website to review the menu. "This sounds really good," is what you'll say. And it IS that good. We eat here whenever we're in Philly, which is not often enough. Woefully, there are waaaay too few restaurants like Modo Mio.

I came here with 2 other friends and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in this cozy BYOB restaurant. We each opted for the Turista menu (4 courses for $35) and no one was disappointed. These portions are small but with the fresh bread, ricotta and dipping oil, it's more than enough food. Everything was delicious! The Rabbit Ravioli and Short Ribs are definitely must try items!

On a recent visit to Philly, we went to Modo Mio on the strong recommendation of a local. It was a great decision--super nice staff, lovely food. Their four-course prix-fix menu is such a great way to go. Excellent choices for every course, and all delicious. I felt very at home here--it was the perfect combination of gourmet-calibre food, but with a low-key atmosphere with no pretentiousness. The building isn't much to look at, and when we got there (pretty late) the neighborhood seemed dead--although we had NO problem hailing a cab. It's a BYOB place--for non-locals, that means you buy your wine or beer elsewhere and bring it along, and they'll serve it for you.

We had just returned from a trip to Italy, so maybe my taste buds were expecting something really terrific. We were there for Supo Sunday where you do not order, they just bring out food to your table, family-style. The dishes were all good, but there was nothing that jumped out at us as being terrific. Every meal we had in Italy was Off the charts terrific. Maybe my expectations were a bit unrealistic, but when it comes to Italian food, I consider myself a discerning critic.

vetri osteria take a page out of mcandrews book and learn something.reasonable prices great food and service as well as contemporary creative cuisine with outstanding service and you have the new hot restaurant on girard yes girard avenue.centanni..........

We were a group of five and had booked in advance--fortunately, for the place was packed. If we had had nothing but the home baked bread dipped in herbed olive oil, we would have been happy, but everyone was delighted with our choices from all over the menu, which emphasized northern Italian dishes. I was the only one who ordered the four course prix fixe dinner, which the server said provided smaller portions than the same items a la carte. Those portions were more than ample, especially the day's entree special, a whole branzino, grilled to perfection (a $5 upcharge and worth it). Some companions had meat, others had shellfish, and everything was perfect. The restaurant has no liquor license and is BYOB (no corkage fee). A supermarket across the street offers a good wine and beer selection. Two hour street parking was unmetered, and there were plenty of available spaces on the side street. (The restaurant is on the corner.) The only negative was the noise level, partly the result of a particularly boisterous table of birthday celebrants. Some acoustic tiles or tapestries on the walls would help. All in all, a superb restaurant.

We love this restaurant. The food is always delicious, creative and fresh. It is truly a destination for us as suburbians venturing into the big city. Parking is a nightmare. So plan on either getting lucky close by or having to drive around and around side streets and end up testing your uber tight parking skills. Once you are in, know that it is a small space on the corner and mostly very crowded and loud. We had reservations for a Saturday night. It was packed. We waited a bit for a large round. It was later and patrons were already deep into their byobs and screaming to talk. It was that loud. We could not hold a conversation. That aside, the menu was down a few choices we hoped to try already, but what we had was delicious. The six of us all ordered different things and passed plates so we got to try a lot. Every dish was as great as the last with the exception of huge pieces of cracked pepper in the rigatoni. We were all coughing it out. The desserts were the stars of the night. Panacotta, this moist lemon olive oil cake, a dense ganache like dark flourless chocolate cake and ricotta cheesecake. We were stuffed, but still wiped the plate clean. Service was not quite as attentive as we would have liked, but probably because the place was jumping. We have also enjoyed the Sunday family dinners here.

I went to dinner last night at Modo Mio for the first time. Everything went well until the very end. We had a great server, great food and dined in a great atmosphere. We all did the 4 course tasting menu and had no complaints about the food or our waitress. After we finished our 3rd course, someone in our party asked to take home their leftovers and the server stated she would box the rest up and bring it back. We then had dessert and continued drinking our wine. Shortly after paying for our meal the hostess very rudely approached us and stated "we have other parties waiting you'll have to leave now". There were multiple other parties who had been there much longer that remained seated, chatting and laughing as we were rudely forced out before finishing our wine. We also never got the boxed leftovers. The ending of this experience ruined what was a great meal.

small unknown unique northern italian bistro. go for the price fixe 4 dishes for $33...amazing food!

We have been to Modo Mio several times and have had a great dining experiencse most of the time. We would recommend going any day but Sunday. The turista menu, (prix fixe where you have a choice of appetizer, pasta, main course, dessert all for $35), offered every day but Sunday,is a great deal. The appetizers are usually very good, often including a large yummy diver scallop, a generous serving of mussels with your choice of sauce, and many other offerings prepared in creative ways. There are usually a half dozen delicious, interesting pasta courses to choose from, as well as that many main courses. For five dollars more, you can get a wonderful grilled whole fish as your main course. Before dessert, they offer complimentary sambuca. Desserts are delicious. Some reviewers have complained that Modo Mio's food is too salty. They do use a lot of ham, bacon, cheese, etc in their dishes, so unless you like a lot of salty flavor, read the descriptions carefully and avoid those choices. You won't have trouble finding dishes that don't include salty ingredients. A quick comment on noise level, that other reviewers have mentioned. We find going early helps. And we have never had rude staff. So why only a 3 star rating? We tried Sugo Sunday recently and were very disappointed. Sugo Sunday involves family style serving where you don't order. The servers bring out a variety of dishes, as if you were eating at somebody's house. The meal started with antipasto, which included grilled and marinated vegetables and a plate of cheeses and a few slices of salami. The quality was fair. The marinated offerings were very crowded and the flavors ran into each other. The main courses were all brought out at once:two types of pasta, but both in the same sauce, which was just okay, and small portions of gnocchi, which were served in the same sauce; a plate of extremely large, boring meatballs which had a lot of filler; a plate of hot and sweet sausage, which were pretty good; a plate of very large slices of extremely bland roast pork; and a plate of rather tasteless roasted chicken thighs. This was followed by an argula salad, which would have been good but the dressing was too sweet. Desserts were then brought out, (which were all good) but no sambuca was offered. All in all I would say we paid $33, plus tax and tip, for a mediocre meal, the only good dishes being dessert and the wonderful bread that is always served.

After trying without success to make reservations at many of the popular restaurants in Philadelphia, our party of four booked a table for Modo Mio. We found free street parking on the block and came early on a Sunday evening with our own bottles of wine (BYOB). Very quickly our table was filled with rustic slices of bread with homemade cheese, antipasto plates and delectable treats. As soon as one plate was finished, several more came filled with chicken, roast pork, homemade sausages, lasagne, gnocchi, salad and desserts, It was far more than we could eat, but the atmosphere was fun, the service was personable, the room was bright even if it was quickly crowded with patrons. Don't go here if you are on a diet!

This was our first return to Philadelphia in two years; and because it had been one of our favorite restaurants when we lived in Philly, we made a point of returning to Modo Mio as well. Some restaurants don't hold up well with a couple of years' perspective, but Modo Mio was just as good as we remembered. The Menu Turista is still an incredible value--a diverse and impeccably prepared selection of three courses for $35--and the gluten-free pasta options were a much-appreciated accommodation for the gluten-intolerant members of our party. The service is deft, friendly and attentive ... the atmosphere is informal and relaxed ... and the quality of the food is as good as in restaurants costing two or three times as much. Our one quibble was with the bread: we remembered generous hunks cut from huge loaves, hot and fresh from the oven, but what we got this time was meager and ordinary. Still, we recommend Modo Mio without reservation: you'll love it ... but remember that it's BYO and cash-only.

Went to Modomio last summer with a good friend from Philadelphia. I am from Philly, but have been in Florida for 17 years. I have been able to come back several times to visit and every time I come back I try to go to new O&O restaurants. Modomio was a winner! If your from Philly then you probably couldn't appreciate this place for what it is... an amazing food-first restaurant that's owned and operated by the chef. This type of restaurant literally doesn't exist in west central Florida. What I specifically ordered doesn't even matter. It was all amazing. There was love in every dish and I can't wait to come back in ten long days. I'm already thinking about what to order.

For us it's a little out of the way, but well worth the trip. Friendly atmosphere and great food. Right near the L and across street from a wine store (it's byob). We all had the tasting menu and everything was superb. Portions we just right. Bring cash, it's cash only.

My family has had many family birthday celebrations at Modo Mio. Last night was one of the best. We all had one of the tastiest and innovative meals in a long time. Excellent service, delicious first taste of polenta with white bean and garlic, fresh bread and ricotta and it went on from there. We'll definitely be back in June for the next birthday. Thank you!

Very good food and even better service. Menu is northern italian with many interesting plates. All four in my party were very happy with their selection. We all got the menu turista option which is a great value for the 4 courses that includes. Recommended for foodies.

Fun, cool, very good food. We were there with a party of 4. Prompt service, shabby chic atmosphere. Reminds me of the French Quarter jn New Orleans.

Friends of ours live in Philadelphia and said they had heard great things about an Italian restaurant in the Northern Liberties section of Philly. They couldn't remember the exact name but a google search of Italian restaurants got us there. Our server recommended the "Turista" menu, a four course tour with a number of choices. I'm a pescetarian and found a bunch of great options. The highlight for me was the Eggplant....Awesome. BYOB and bring cash, no credit cards accepted.

We have eaten here several times of the Sunday fixed price. You cannot beat the quality or quantity of the food. Love the antipasto, the sausage and the gnocchi. Chicken was great, pork was okay if slightly on the dry side. But the noise level is deafening. It did not help that there was a group of 20 basically yelling the entire meal, at one point chanting "BOB BOB BOB". It was awful for every other diner in the restaurant. We spent half the night turning around to see what was going on. The wait staff did nothing to quell the noise and it ruined the meal for us. I really enjoy the food but I don't think I'll ever go back.

We have now been to modo mio twice and it's easily one of our favorite restaurants in Philly- and my husband and I are huge foodies! There's a $35 four course menu and its byob so it's really a great value. The food is great. Love they gnocchi! And the beef cheek is delicious. Can't go wrong! Staff is super sincere and friendly - not at all pretentious like you might sometimes find in other fine restaurants.

Hadn't been to Modo Mio in quite a while. Taurista menu is $37 now and is in my opinion a good value. Mashed potatoes with crabmeat and the lasagna were outstanding but not low calorie dishes! Bread with olive oil is still fantastic. We got dessert to go as the noise level had just beaten us up. Maybe we are just too old but probably won't be back as you really did have a hard time carrying on a conversation. BYOB and cash only.

After being to the overpriced Vetri the week before, we decided to try Modo Mio last Friday night. We ordered the Turista menu which was a four course dinner of your choice that included antipasti, pasta, secondi and dessert. First let me say, the bread is to "die for." I could have eaten that alone! My main course was the lamb shank. It was so tender and the flavors were so complex, it was hard to know exactly what was in it. Everything we ate was wonderful. And all for $32. The waitress told us the portions would be small, but we left full! Also, try the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Can't wait to return!

One of our favorite Italian places. The chef owner told us he's cooking on Tuesdays but we like Sundays when they have a prix fixe. They bake their own bread. The decor is minimal and the service is good. Everybody is having a good time.

I was in Philadelphia on work with a colleague. The concierge at the hotel where we staying recommended the restaurant. He told us that he lived in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia and that when he wanted to have "Italian", he would go to Modo Mio. While it was a bit of a drive for us, I'm glad we made the trip. We each had the "turista" offering on the menu, which is a four course meal and at $35.00, it is well worth the price. You get to pick an appetizer, a pasta, a main dish and then dessert. We each had something different every course and everything was simply terrific. We were genuinely impressed. We were also served some small samplers, gratis, during the course of our meal, as well as a delicious salad which they served us during our main course. I've been eating in restaurants for a long time and I do not recall ever getting that many free items. Just before dessert arrived, they brought us each a shot of Sambuca, again, on the house. I read that some folks thought the place was noisy, but I guess that depends on the day of the week. We arrived close to 7:00 PM on a Wednesday night. We did not have reservations. At that time, the place was about 25% full. By the time we left, the place was nearly full. The noise level was negligible for me and I never really even gave it a second thought. I've been in some noisy restaurants and this was not one of them - at least on that particular night. The wait staff was terrific, from top to bottom. I could not say enough for them and how attentive they were. Great job folks. I will mention my experience to family and friends in the Philadelphia area and i am sure they will check it out. It was well worth it.

We had the Tourista tasting menu. 40.00 for four courses. We went with all the "specials". Wow!!! The fried cheese with sausage was out of the world! The service is amazing. The tables are close together so you can interact with your neighbors if you want. Don't miss this place!! Unfugbelievable!!! And then some! And then some more!

We were taken here by "in the know" friends of ours in Philadelphia -- and they knew what they were doing. The restaurant is small and unassuming, located in one of Philly's reviving neighborhoods. The staff is super friendly. The food is absolutely amazing. Everything we had was delicious. We brought our own wine with us and concluded the evening somewhere between blown away by the dining and sloshed from the wine. I would go back here again and again.

Well I might be a little biased in that I know members of Peter's (owner) family. However, as objectively as I can I would like to offer this. My wife and I eat out about once a month. Not very frequent diners for sure, so we value the time and choices we make very highly. Going into the city is not usually my cup of tea, but doing this was highly anticipated. Sugo Sunday pretty closely duplicates my Sundays as a Italian boy. I grew up poor, but felt rich when I went to my nanna's on Sunday. The food was fabulous and I learned to really pig out. Well Peter's Sugo Sunday brings it all back for me with only little differences. His meatballs are a blend of meats whereas my nanna used primarily pork. She cooked spare rips in the gravy (sauce for you non-Italians) whereas his were possible loin cut slices. never the less I loved them. I also loved the atmosphere of Modo Mio where being so close to others conversations often engage adjacent tables. For sure we had a great meal with nice surprises along the way. Had to carry the excesses home for another day but I looked forward to those leftovers. Yummy.

Six of us did a 6:00 Sunday evening old school Italian food feast at Modo Mio on a cold first day of Spring and had a great time! Let's see, excellent cheeses, eggplant, peppers and other fun things for the antipasti starter (this is a $37 prix fixe meal). Then a bit of chicken liver pate on their excellent bread that keeps coming with a bit of prompting. Now here's the only major rub as I see it. After no more than ten minutes we were served an overwhelming amount of three different pastas and plates of gigantic firm and excellent meatballs, lovely Italian sausage, bracciole, roast chicken and pork. You seriously have to be in the right frame to withstand this, but if you are it's great family style eating and great fun. A bit of arugala as a salad break that kind of came out while the mains were still around, finally followed by the dolce that I honestly was too far gone to try. Byob and friendly service topped things off nicely. This entire dining experience took about one hour and 45 minutes which would have been improved by a much slower pacing. Still, for a good time with excellent old school Italian this is FUN!

What a wonderful evening we had at Modo Mio! Our Girls Night was perfect from beginning to end from the moment we stepped into this charming restaurant. Our server was attentive and happily indulged a few changes that we requested from the pre fixe menu. The food was heavenly and cooked to perfection! It was a treat to try some new dishes that I wouldn't normally order, yet have the flexibility to change some things. This classy restaurant is first rate!!

This is a well worth patronizing Italian, byob restaurant. Good food. Good service.and attractive prices. Trifecta.

love it

Walking into the scent of freshly baked bread was just the beginning of a memorable sensory experience! Every seat was taken and reservations are a must ! The price fix menu ($40.) was so satisfying. We were able to try an appetizer, pasta, entree and dessert with staff so engaging and make sure no questions remain unasked. An alchemy of flavors, fresh ingredients and seasonal offerings will definitely keep me coming back!

Sixteen of us went for dinner. Service was very good and the food was wonderful. It's a BYO restaurant but wine store located across the street. Will visit restaurant again in the future.

Our server was excellent; knowledgeable and attentive. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the meal. The menu was varied and interesting, but the execution poor. Several dishes came out tepid. The amount of salt overwhelmed any possibility of subtlety. The noise level is quite loud due to the bare walls and floors. Too bad! On paper, this looked like a winner.

Loved our dinner at Modo Mio last night. This is a perfect alternative from the bar food in the area and will be our go-to when we head to Johnny Brenda's for a show. They are a cash-only BYOB but fear not, there is a bottle store across the street - perfect. They were booked up with reservations but the 4 tables outside are first come-first serve. We snagged a table and were quickly welcomed with water and a complementary bite from the kitchen. While the tourista menu option (4 courses for $35) was tempting we opted for a couple appetizers and a couple pastas which was plenty food. I had the calamari to start which is one of those dishes that will stick with me. Grilled squid, chickpeas, raisins, almonds, lemon, arugula...light, perfect summer appetizer. I'm going to go back just for this...and order three portions. My wife had the snail stew which was served over a slice of bread and was very tasty as well. I had the bucatini for my entrees with pancetta and a spicy plum tomato sauce. Some of the pasta was cooked perfectly while one or two pieces was completely underdone. I also wish the sauce had a little more spice. On both accounts, not the end of the world and won't deter me from going back. My wife had the pennoni, large house made penne stuffed with suckling pig, provolone, and a plum mostarda. Sooo good, very creamy, and perfect portion size for something pretty heavy. We skipped dessert, but did take them up on the free sambuca shot offer. For the price ($60 including tip) you can't really beat this place and I look forward to returning. An excellent experience.

My friends told me the food was ok. But what really dominated their experience at Modo Mio was the waiter, at the behest of chef/owner, working to turn over the table (hurry to get them out!) ASAP. They were seated while waiting for one other person (who arrived soon thereafter), were pestered to know when she would arrive and were not allowed to even order appetizers until all had arrived (FYI there were empty tables there). When I arrived to meet up with them as they finished dessert, the place was full, but there was no one waiting for a table and only three remaining reservations in the book at the front (I checked when I left). When I sat down, we overheard the chef/owner tell the waiter "I will not serve her!" They were very rude about it and flatly told me that because I was not seated at the same time with my party, I could not order food. Mind you, there were only 3 more reservations on this very rainy night and the place wasn't to close for 2 more hours! Neither I nor my friends have EVER been treated so horribly at a restaurant. The funny thing is, they were acting like Modo Mio was the latest hotspot in NYC and so busy they had to turn people away at the door! Don't get me wrong, I love the neighborhood....but it IS Northern Liberties, not Soho. In the end, I was treated properly, well-fed and more than satisfied at their MUCH friendlier neighbor, Las Cazuelas! Don't waste your time at Modo Mio, go to LAS CAZUELAS!!!!

We had a very nice dinner with our son who lives nearby. Menu had a nice variety and food was good. We had the fixed price dinner. I wouldn't do that again. It was more food than I normally would eat and made dinner for three quite expensive. My biggest complaint was that the restaurant was very noisy and we had to shout in order to hear one another. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Be aware that they do not accept credit cards.

3 course, price fixe. Great selections. BYOB. Very pleasant service. Only detraction is the noise. Close quarters. But very informal. Dined there many times.

Probably the best Italian meal we've had outside of Rome. We went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and was met by a very warm staff. The hostess, waiter, and a bunch of other ladies who were filling our glasses and cleaning our table were very nice and attentive without being overbearing. For the amount we paid, The Turista tasting menu has got to be the best deal in all of Philadelphia. We both got to pick from appetizer, pasta, entree, and dessert. He got crab cake, rabbit ravioli, steak and tiramisu. I got escargot, gnocci, trout, and panna cotta. My husband couldn't stop talking about his entire meal, especially the rabbit. I loved almost everything I got. Gnocci was nothing worth writing home about, but it was delicious. Get the mint and berry panna cotta. A surprisingly refreshing way to end a heavy meal. Fair warning - do not come if you're on a strict diet. We probably gained 5 lbs in butter, oil, bread, and cheese! Everything, from the bread to pasta, is made in-house. We made reservations on the day of our dinner without much of a problem. But the general rule of thumb for Modo Mio is to call a few days in advanced as they do not like to crowd their diners and allow them time to appreciate the food!

Food was overall good though it is not fine dining by any means. Basic noisy crowded dining room you'd expect from a hole in the wall restaurant. Service was competent. Might be better if go on a quiet night, not a busy Sat. night.

Been here twice. The food is very good and something different from other Italian restaurants. A good place to share the many dishes on the menu. Casual atmosphere. I have never had any issue with the service as I have seen in some other reviews as it has been one of the highlights. It is a noisy atmosphere but that is part of the experience. Go somewhere else if you want a quiet dinner.

I visited this restaurant on a Friday night. We were two couples and had made reservations at 7:30. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is very small, but cozy. There are basically two rows of tables and you sit fairly close to the table next to you. We all ordered from the turista menu and everything was fabulous. There was not one thing that we ate that wasn't delicious. The waiter was very accomodating and even chilled our bottle of champagne in the fridge while we ate. We were celebrating an engagement and birthday so the waiter also brought us Sambucca to go with our dessert. One slight problem was that we were asked to leave when we were done eating our dessert. We were sitting around chatting and were slightly late for our reservation! We will definitely be returning for another celebration meal!

Modo Mio is a gem of a BYOB restaurant in Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. Unassuming on the outside, but a ball of energy on the inside. Service was fantastic (Andrew...thanks for making our anniversary memorable) and the food really terrific. Portions are relatively small, so you can go for the 4 course $33 meal that includes dolce. Pastas are all handmade and the ingredients fresh, flavorful and memorable. The decor is pretty basic, but there is a great vibe inside with lots of "oh wow, that was fantastic" faces on the patrons. A bit noisy, but that was part of the charm.

Modo Mio serves some of the best bread in the city and has a large menu with an interesting prix fixe "turista menu" of four courses. The best dishes are outstanding while some are mediocre. It is noisy and the waitstaff is inconsistent--sometimes helpful, othertimes downright rude. One tends to feel rushed and their reservation system gets easily messed up. BYOB and cash only.

Three generations of beautiful Italian women dined together this evening here. It's $37 for a four course meal that they describe as small to medium plates. Each course was delicious and satisfying and each course could make a meal. Tappis these are not!

A great little Italian place. Delicious food, friendly and attentive service, just a great place to have dinner. It was pretty loud, but everyone was enjoying themselves, so that's to be expected.

The food and service are excellent! The $40.00 tasting menu is a real value and the portion sizes are very good considering the price and the quality of the food. No complaints but I would suggest the owner consider hearing the plates before serving hot food on very cold dishes. I would also suggest better locks on the unisex bathroom doors. I had the door shut tight and locked but people were still walking in. A two dollar slide bar on each door would eliminate this issue.

Sugo Sunday here is what I have been looking for a long time. Everything was very very good, apps were excellent but the pasta was to die for. I cannot wait to go back and try the weekday food because if it's half as good it will be a real treat. Service was pleasant.

We won't wait another year before returning here as we just did. Can't believe the value for $40. Wonderful chef's complimentary appetizer; four courses with each one building on the last. We loved the whole Branzino filleted at tableside, the pasta course and the antipasti that preceeded it. And the desert was simply superb. All this and BYOB!

I can't say enough about Modo Mio. So delicious and with fantastic service. Three of us tried the menu items and specials. All with vibrant flavors and beautiful presentation. This is my sons favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. $40 for four excellent courses is a bargain. And it's a BYOB. We will be back soon.

We all know that eating in a restaurant isn't cheap. the food was good but you have to order at least 5 courses to get out of there no hungry.

Had a wonderful outdoor meal--extremely flavorful, petite portions coming together to create an incredible effect. There are enough vegetarian options that I can try a diferent combination next time, hooray.

At least we were warned by our server that Modo Mio's food is very salty. Instead of leaving after we sat down, we decided to stay because we were all very hungry. The menu is considered Northern Italian and looked incredible. They offered wonderful flavor combinations and quality ingredients. There is no doubt about that, but the entire meal was the saltiest dinner I have ever eaten. If they would have used half the salt in their ingredients it would have been bearable. My family will never go back.

We visited Philadelphia for the weekend and our friend Josh suggested this restaurant. We were 3 couples having a lovely evening that only got better at this restaurant. The food was excellent, some of us asked for the “chef choice” were they select your meal (after asking if the have items to avoid) The wine list was from southern Italy ( no barolo or Brunello 😕) , we had a couple of nice bottles of wine and nice deserts The servers could not have been nicer and friendlier Overall a great experience Hope to be back soon in Philly and to this taverna. We will return with more friends hoping for another lovely evening
Cancelled reservations for 10 abruptly 5 days before our dinner plans. Suggest confirm reservations or take a chance!
I have been here several times and because of it's fine reputation booked for our Christmas friends celebration over a month ago. Sorry - you are cancelled because the entire restaurant had been rented out!!! Yes, try and find fine dining for ten in 5 days during the holiday season. Perhaps some offer of compensation would have been a classy touch. Or better still retain customer appreciation by saying no to the rental offer. So Modo Mio lost 10 customers plus the trust of many more. Out of respect for past dining, "Average" is the best I could do.
