Wood panelling, craft beers, bowls of monkey nuts which you drop the shells on the floor. Local after work bar. Why do all American craft beers have to be so strong?

They have a great tap list (can get American craft or European) and a mammoth bottle list. Burgers are great, sometimes they serve peanuts that you can throw on the floor, and most the apps are very good (I am a wing person, and would not recommend them). Place has a great feel, very quant, and you feel like you are in a pub. Great for lunch, after work drink, or dinner.

In town and went here on July 5th early afternoon for lunch and joined our sons that were already enjoying a beer. We ordered burgers and fries and they were delicious along with the nice cold beers that we had on a really hot day. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful in our choices. Loved the atmosphere as well.

excellent choice of ales and great service from Cheryl; good menu options and overall great value; looking forward to a return

Loved the variety of beer. Waitress was very informative. Shared burger sliders and onion rings. Both very good. Crowded on a Friday after work. Loud. Service was very good. We would definitely go back.

historical updated place. Enjoyed this place. good beer and food. we came across this place by exiting the lake street L few stops early and decided to walk. we opened the door to an old wold charm and went in late afternoon so wasn't too busy. looking to go back soon. we don't like the corporate structure or fancy give me your money to pay the rent gimmick.. give it a try.

This is a perfect place to go and have a beer. Young, old it doesn't matter. This is one-fo-a-kind place. Enjoyed it's uniqueness and all of the various chandeliers.

Very large selection of beers on tap and in bottles/cans. We went late on a Monday and there was still a decent crowd. Service was great and I would recommend the Chicken Avocado Sandwich!

The beer list is literally a book. Hidden away in the Loop, this is a great place for a tourist to tuck into and get the local experience. Directly under the L (subway) at the corner of Wells and Lake. Cozy place to while away the time and drink your way around the world. Great place for a rainy day. The servers are wonderful and they know their stuff. The food is better than a frozen Jeno's at an American Legion sort of place, but this is not a place for cuisine. NOTE: there's a little nook with books lining the shelves. During a recent visit, a friend and I discovered that these books are cut in half lengthwise so that they fit the shelving. Despite their limited use as reading material, we created a fun trivia game "reading" them.

Now that our company has moved my friend and I needed a new Friday hangout. Monks pub is less than a block away and woo hoo a new adventure for us. Nice menu and awesome beer list. Great atmosphere. Cheers to monks pub!

Visited Monks on a Saturday afternoon. At first it was pretty empty but within an hour it was filling up. Was told that this place can be packed on week nights. Great atmosphere with the dining area divided into different themes like an old library or a wine cellar with old dusty bottles. While there appeared to be minimum staffing, our bartender complete with a British accent easily handled the growing crowd and the kitchen knocked out the food orders quickly. Food was typical pub fare but the burger had great flavor and the sweet potato fries just the right amount of crispy. My companions tilapia sandwich was also very good. Great selection of micro brews to include stouts. Beers and food are priced for the downtown crowd.

My favorite meal on a 5 night trip to Chicago. 3 pan pizzas (all great) and one fancy $$$ steak house (not worth it even on expense account) before this stop. I had a poutine appetizer, the Demi glaze went well with the fries, although the cheese curds were not as good as I am used to in MKE. Burger was excellent, with a char flavor that came through even with ample toppings. Cooked to perfection. Fried pickle side was show-stopping. Plenty of beers on tap plus an awesome bottle list that featured Belgians and similar American craft beers.

Bartender was super friendly and helpful on their expansive beer list ask for Dimples she was great. Fun vibe and a an overall great pub to hang out in.

This bar is a gem in the loop. It has the best selection of draft and bottled beer. Good for sour beer lovers. The bartender was really knowledgeable on all sorts of beers and gave us tips on places to go in Chicago (not just the tourist stuff).

My fiance is a beer connoisseur and really appreciates a great selection with knowledgeable staff. The Monk was exactly what we were looking for and I'd highly recommend it to people who are into the craft beer scene

For years, Monk's has been one of my go-to, reliable pubs. The Loop generally lags behind other neighborhoods in its bars-per-block ratio. And what "bars" exist are actually liquor licences held by fancy restaurants. Monk's is an honest-to-goodness pub, complete with free peanuts at every table! A large beer selection, plus regular "tap takeovers" and other events, add to the pub-ness. It's dim and wooden inside. Good service at the tables or the bar, and a full menu round out the experience. If time or distance doesn't permit you to drink in one of the neighborhoods, go to Monk's, you won't be disappointed.

One of the coolest pub/tap-house I have ever been. Its the coolest thing to have a complementing peanuts that you can eat and throw the shells to the ground!

My husband and I stopped in for a beer while walking towards Union Station. The bartenders here were excellent. I wasn't sure what to order here so they helped me find a great tasting beer that I never heard of. It was excellent.

Had read the previous good reviews and it didn’t disappoint. Looks nothing from the outside, don’t be deceived, great service and great food and amazing choice of ales if that’s your thing, would recommend

Looking for place for dinner & came across this wonderful Pub, wow it was so good. Highly recommend. We had hummus plate for appetizer & I had steak salad the rest of family had burgers. All of our food was wonderful

This place is HOPPING! I went at lunch time & had a portobello mushroom sandwich, and my husband had some massive burger topped with bacon. We finished it ALL. Great atmosphere, fun place to hang with friends, co-workers, family or a date. I would love to go back here someday when i am in the Chicago area !

Stumbled upon this place and I really enjoyed it. Menu is uninspired but I don't think that's what they're going for. Extensive, unique beer selection, perfect atmosphere with unique, warm Bavarian decor. Very welcoming. Free peanuts, drop em on the floor - perfect

Walked in on a Tuesday night, quickly got a table for 6. Monk's Pub has an excellent beer selection. I tried a local brew that was very good. For appetizers, we had cheese curds and a plate of tots, both excellent. Burgers are very good. I had a side of chili, but didn't enjoy it that much due to how it was seasoned (just an issue of personal taste). Would definitely recommend this place to any visitors to Chicago staying in the area.

This is a faux old irish/british pub but it as an extensive beer menu and lots of good snacks. A bit loud but a very nice place to sit with your friends and have a beer.

This is like a neighborhood bar in the heart of the Chicago Loop. I had lunch here with a buddy, who suggested a burger. Great call. I had the Smokehouse; he had the California. They were fantastic!!! The place is a dazzling array of wood, knick knacks and stuff all over the walls, so the ambiance is eclectic but fun. Looked like a good array of tap beers also. Very friendly staff too. Check it out.

We were there on a weekend (quiet, since this is the financial district), and didn't eat there, but the service was great, and the beer selection was extensive. The decor is very cool. This was a Schlitz- sponsored bar originally, and there is some great Schlitz stuff still in place. Due to location in financial district, not open on Sundays, per the bartender.

My wife and I, along with a group of friends, went to Monk’s Pub in Chicago and we had a blast. From the moment we walked, we were greeted and felt welcome. Our waiter, Dash, was the epitome of what a waiter should be: friendly, funny, attentive and very knowledgeable about all the beers and food selection. The wings and pouting fries were delicious and rather large portions. Great selection of beers and very tasty. We will definitely return to this place.

Monk’s Pub reminds me of what it must have been like to walk into a bar during medieval times. It’s a great atmosphere with a nice selection of beer to make you forget what century it is. This is a perfect spot for friends.

We stopped in—late weekday evening while waiting to pick up pizza. Our server, Trevor, was friendly, drinks were good. Monk’s had a fun atmosphere, cool decor. If we had been in town longer, we would have gone back. Worth it to stop in!!

popped in for a refill after exploring the city on foot and found this gem, lots to see, vibey pub and great selection of beers

Came across as a Locals pub and good typical Pub Grub at an acceptable price for Chicago downtown. Lots of "flavors" on tap and some interesting cans and bottles (yes, really). Friendly bar staff, even to first timers, open and welcoming on my Thurs and Fri night visit for dinner. Seems to be a mix of locals and lost hotel guests, but all good. Peanuts on Fri night, shells on the floor so don't think its a dive, just a local place. Find it on the side street (see address) and sign in the picture, two blocks north of Kimpton Allegro on Randolph Street. Worthwhile for a stop to duck and cover from the spring rains or summer heat, enjoy.

Went for a burger and drink on a Thursday - it was packed so plan accordingly (around 6pm). The burger ($13) was very good - juicy - but not cooked to order. I think that they cook to one temperature but I could be wrong. I was not asked. The burger came with sweet potato fries along with a Victory DirtWolf IPA - very good (7)

Love the atmosphere at Monk's. It's such a cute place and I love the decor. My office is now right around the corner from Monk's and I eat here frequently. I will go back for the atmosphere and decor, the food has just been inconsistent. I was at Monk's twice last week and one meal was outstanding and the other was mediocre. The tater tots we ordered were way overcooked on one visit and the mac and cheese bites were perfect the next. Was very upset the one day I ordered a salad and curly fries and the cost was just almost $20. The salad was very plain, with very little ingredients except for the lettuce. Just wish I'd know if I was going to get a great meal when I go to Monk's or a mediocre one.

We ended up here on a Friday afternoon, tired from a long flight and looking forward to some yummy sandwiches. My boyfriend tried a few different Belgian beers, not too expensive! and I had the chicken avocado sandwich which was delicious. Later on around 5 it got really crowded in here! I would definitely come again.

The beer selection at this place is usually exceptional. I went at a time when they had replaced all regular beers with a winter tour and were out of most of them as well. It was a Friday night and going to be a long weekend if they were already out of beers on draft. Ordered food as well. It wasn't spectacular just average. Waiter brought me the wrong bottled beer and charged me for it as well. I didnt say anything as we really needed to go and didnt notice until after i left. This place usually impresses me when we come to Chicago, this time not so much!

Good selection of beer and spirits for a quick drink with colleagues after work and meetings. Also went for lunch between business meetings, found space for 9 people, and had really good / quick service. The food is really tasty too.

My colleagues and I were in Chicago for a conference. Wanting to escape from crowds of Michigan Ave, we searched for a bar with these key words: Relaxed Atmosphere, Great Beer, Good Prices. Monk's is that place! Additionally, the following key words could be added: Outstanding Service, Unique Ambiance. The beer selection is amazing. Prices are very reasonable. The staff is both friendly and helpful. Plus, who doesn't want to drink a beer in a mock Trappist Abbey with 1970's Schlitz lanterns overhead? We've decided, each year as we attend this conference, we will spend a night a Monk's Pub!

It's in middle of all the tall buildings which are beautiful when lit up at night. The outside looks like a simple building from a distant time. You enter two double doors which probably supports keeping the cold weather outside. Inside is a long bar, tables w/ seats, and bartenders with heavy accents to adding more color to the atmosphere. There is a corner with bookshelves giving a homely touch. I was able to use my laptop (they have wifi) in a booth while waiting for a classmate. There is a menu for bottled and draft selections, with some wine/liquor as well. I am used to some California institutions that have 100+ beers on tap, but some of the selection at Monk's are quite unique and I have only seen them here. Lunchtime was spacious but I'm sure evenings can be more crowded. Cheers!

We were standing outside, hesitating as it looked a bit suspicious- then two locals came and said join us- it’s great and so we did. At first table there was sitting 4 cops having their lunch and there were like 95% locals. The food and wine was great and the prices absolutely fair. The waiter nice and talkative. So nothing to complain about ;-) just do it.

Was in town on vacation and stumbled across this place being close to my hotel. Had a great enjoyable time here on a Friday night for some drinks and dinner. Have a great selection of beers! Our server was very helping in helping us select a great beer. The service was fast. (it was packed) Food and drinks came out fast. I ordered their maple bacon burger. Was Amazing! I would say put this place on your list of places to go!

Took a long weekend trip to Chicago. Took the blue line to the clark and lake stop. This us where I discovered "Monks" had a good turkey ruben with waffle cut sweet potato fries, very good. Another person has the sliders, they were a good size and she could only eat 2 of 3 sliders. Would go back again.

Stopped here for lunch while in the city for work. Had the grilled chicken avocado sandwich. It comes on toasted wheat bread with garlic mayo, Swiss cheese, bacon, avocado, tomato and lettuce. Lots of flavor and very delicious. Had a side of fries and asked for extra crispy. They were great and they gave a LOT which I love since I’m a French fry person. Saw someone with buffalo chicken wings that I was totally jealous of. Will definitely come back when in the city. Oh and great friendly service.

We stopped here for drinks on a Monday evening on our way back to our hotel which was just around the corner. Before we walked in an employee on break greeted us and invited us in. Our server inside was very attentive and incredibly nice. Our drinks were great. My husband is going back to Chicago for work shortly and will definitely be going back!

Stopped in here with some colleagues for lunch before a client meeting. The ambience is "english pub casual". The service was good and the food was excellent. Great chicken and avocado sandwich. Portions are substantial.

This small neighborhood pub is located on the corner of Lake and N Wells right near the El tracks. Designed in a Tudor style building. Went with a friend and enjoyed the times that I stopped in. They have quite a selection of German and other similar style beers. They even have mead, never had that before. When you stop in make sure to bring your mobile device/phone to see the most updated beer list. The staff were knowledgeable and fun, especially, Tim. The food selection was American pub choices. Didn't get a chance to try their food. There is even a little library area up to the one side.

We visited Chicago in August and it was our last day in town and Monk's was close to our hotel so we decided to have lunch her, strictly on convenience of location We arrived around 1:00 on a Monday and they were not overly crowded and managed a round table for 6 near the front window. Our server greeted us promptly and took our drink orders. We all had beer and different brands as they have 15-20 different draft options. They were playing some god awful heavy metal music that was loud and terrible. We asked them if they could either turn it down or change the station and within minutes they put on more classic rock music. Nice to see they care about their customers All six in our party had a burger. Our selection included a few classics, the caliifronia, the egg (mine), smokehouse and the total. I really enjoyed mine and the rest all had positive comments. We varied our sides to regular fries, curly fries and sweet potato fries and the consensus was the curly fries were the best. Pricing is in line with a burger in most pubs. We loved the atmosphere and commented that it would be fun place to come at night. I would go back for sure !

Monk's is a really fun place to stop in for a beer and a burger. It has a real old time feel and is very cozy. They have a long list of beers on tap and many more in bottles. They also make a good cocktail. It isn't for wine lovers, though. Although they have TV's on the wall, they keep the sound down so you can have a conversation.

I definitely would recommend Monks Pub. Food and drinks are great and prices are honest. Service is very good. Ambient is quite nice!

Fun place to grab an after work drink! It is most crowded weekday lunches and right after work. They have a nice Belgian and Belgian-inspired beer list, but the list doesn't have prices. The bartender recommend a really delicious beer to me, I think it was a wheat beer called Kapuziner. But it was $8, which would've been nice to know. I know I could've asked, but it always annoys me when bartenders and waiters recommend something pricey and don't run it by you first. First time I came, I had the chicken and avocado sandwich, with sweet potato fries. It's overpriced, but honestly pretty good! Bread was toasty, swiss cheese was melty, chicken was nicely grilled, creamy avocado - a simple, solid sandwich. With bacon on it. I could only eat half - it's not huge, but I'm small, so for fellow small people it's two meals worth. The sweet potato fries alongside were REALLY good. I devoured them right off the bat, they were the best thing on the plate. Om nom nom. But the sandwich was $12 and there was a $1 upcharge for sweet potato fries. $13 for this tasty, but basic meal, is a bit ridiculous. Next time I got the tilapia po'boy which is not worth ordering. It's pretty tasteless. Stick to drinks and sweet potato fries and you'll be golden.

Monk's Pub is a unique find in the loop. They have an excellent beer list that will make beer lovers very happy. The service we received was all right, nothing special. What makes this bar special is the ambiance and atmosphere.

We heard about this pub, and thought we had to try it - being from britain! it is a lovely dark pub, and the nuts are great to while away the time - you shell the nuts and the casings go on the floor! food was great, burgers and chips all tasty. worth a visit if you have time!

If you like your beers, then you are going to love this pub. Many selections of great beers. Had a couple of my favourites with Duvel on tap and all brews of Chimay in bottles. As for food, it’s your typical pub grub. Good selection of hamburgers and other pub like food.

I eat here often with co-workers. I've had the BEST BLT!!! It's big and the curly fries are tasty! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Fills quickly.

Service: Quick. I had beer in hand within a few minutes of sitting down. (1pm). My food order was out in less than 7 minutes (Cobb salad). Food: Well, the Cobb salad was great with arugula instead of standard iceburg. They add cucumber and black olives which for some is good. It was tasty and priced appropriately. Beer Selection: The best I've seen with respect to local and international brews. They have a "Don't be mad, try something new list" where they suggest different international beers in lieu of your domestic light beers.

No, I didn't eat there. I mean I did eat about a pound of peanuts but for the rest I focused on beers. Fantastic! There drafts, while selection is not too wide, will satisfy any beer freaks. To me, they brought the memories of celebrating Fulham wins in our favourite pub in London. Kudos also go to the staff. They are friendly and extremely efficient. You get your pind about 2 minutes after ordering.

We had just got to town and wanted a burger and beer. The atmosphere was great and so was the service. Had the fried calamari. YUM. Then to the burgers. Real thick. Couldn’t get my mouth over it. AMAZING! The only disappointment was the only had wired beer. I’m a Miller guy. But would highly recommend.

Beers are expensive, food is quite nice. Waitress we had was pretty good. I felt that the place was trying hard to be something that it's not and came across as a bit pretentious...

Gathering of my team members for a Christmas luncheon. I had never been here and trusted my team. What an fun place to go and have a great burger! Loved the English decor and especially the globe light fixtures. Definitely worth a return visit as service was fast and food plentiful.

This pub is awesome. I rated it high because it really worths it. This pub has an extraordinary decor (the table where we're was themed as an old library), the staff is very friendly. They do have very good beers and their hamburgers are excellent too. Take it for what it is, a pub! Moreover, it is located in an area you wouldn't expect to find a pub, that's nice. The only thing I would note is that the beers, athough very good (they have belgium beers that are very tasty) are pretty expensive (~8$ for 10oz).

This place has been here longer than me. It's a great workday lunch place to grab a salad or a burger and a local beer. The service is not super fast but with a group, I'm usually in and out within an hour. Also, I keep missing all the tasting opportunities, but I hope to get to one soon.

This is a cool European Pub. Probably a 100 different beers and the atmosphere is old world. The service is very good and friendly. The food is is really good and the burgers and sandwiches are exceptional. The sides are unique as well. A nice casual pub.

We passed by the place first trip down the street as I now believe the exterior appearance was a bit deceptive (looked quiet/more formal) and we were in search of a local happy hour near our hotel. Coming back an hour later we decided to drop in on a Friday Night and found our first impression from the street to be wrong; we were very lucky to get two seats together at the bar. The service was prompt and the crowd lively. We chatted with a few locals and got recommendations for other area stops during our visit. They offer your typical bar food and we opted for some nachos to munch on which Hubby enjoyed tremendously. Nice selection of beers, decent wine and the prices were reasonable for the area. Would definately stop in again.

We went there for a few relaxed beers and some pub grub and got just what we wanted. Beer selection is great and I enjoyed the bbq burger which I would definitely eat again. Staff was friendly and would come here again for some beers.

I love this pub. Great atmosphere. Great selection of brews and food. Staff was great too! When I go back I'm definitely heading to Monk's

It was recommended by a local. Large variety of beer. The food is good as well as the service, and the prices are reasonable $10 to $15 for a burger. Located a block away from the river.

Stopped in Monk's Pub on our way to the hotel from the train station. Was very full for Friday after-work crowd (got there right at 5:00). Excellent beer selection. Good bartender (even though it was very busy, we didn't have a long wait). I'd definitely come back.

Monk's is a pub, so don't imagine that you are going to find great food on offer. Stick with the beer, especially the draft beer, and you will not go wrong. The draft menu has two sections, one for the special drafts and one for "usually on tap," but you can find excellent Chicago, Wisconsin, and Indiana craft beers on the draft menu. Usually, when I am enjoying a nice pint (American size only!), I wish to have a little food. The menu looked promising, with chilli, pretzels, three types of sliders, and nachos on offer. Nachos, in America, are usually too much for a single person to finish; sliders are nice but Monk's only serves in increments of two -- two beef sliders, two pulled pork sliders, two chicken sliders. Three would be an ideal order, especially if you could order one of each. But, that is not the system here. I ordered the pretzels -- big mistake. The pretzels are like hot dog buns, not something I would ever consider to be a pretzel. I also tried the chilli -- very, very pedestrian, not to be recommended. So, go for the drinks, and nada mas!

Great food and excellent service. We loved the burger and Buffalo Chicken wrap. We look forward to going back again soon.

We checked out Monks on a Friday night around 6 pm. We couldn't get a table or a spot standing near the bar. The servers allowed us to stand at the end of the bar in their station. We were elbowed several times and pushed around continuously. We wanted to stay and enjoy their great beer selection but it was just too crowded.

My wife, youngest son and his girl friend, all of whom are from Northern California, my other son, who lives in Chicago, and I went down to the German Christmas in the loop. Afterwards, we went to Perry's to get a sandwich, only to find that they were closed on December 23rd. So, we decided we would take the L to Lincoln Square to get a sandwich, when we walked by Monk's Pub. I looked at the building, then the menu and decided we could eat before we went to Gene's. And I'm quite glad we did. Everyone had something different, but I'll direct my comments to my lunch. I had The Egg: A half pound burger, cooked to order (mine was medium), bacon, and a fried egg, accompanied by some really crispy french fries. I topped it off with a glass of Dragon's Milk, a 10% ABV Imperial Stout, aged in bourbon barrels. When my lunch came, I didn't think I'd be able to finish half of it, but it was so good I finished the whole plate and had another Dragon's Milk. The food was great, the beer was great, the atmosphere was wood and warm. The only thing less than great was the service. It was merely good in comparison. If you ever find yourself in the Loop at lunch time (or dinner, I suppose) stop by Monk's. It's got a warm atmosphere, good food, a great beer list (Zombie Dust even). The tab for five, with beers, soft drinks, and tip was about $80, which I thought very reasonable for the experience.

On a late Saturday I called to ask what time the pub closed and got a reply from an English guy who said 5pm and I said oh and he immediately hung up on me. I called back and he answered again. I told him he hung up on me and he said you asked what time we closed and I told you. I’ve got to take care of me customers! I was so taken aback that I told him he was rude and I wouldn’t be coming to his place and I hung up. My husband had called a few minutes before and asked the same question and then asked why do they close at 5 and the guy said those are the rules and hung up. Amazing that he was able to answer the phone right away every time but far too busy to just say goodbye. THE WORST telephone manners ever and because of his attitude he lost two potential customers. If you’re treated like that on a phone call I’d hate to think what would happen if you had a complaint about the food or service. I don't recommend even taking a chance on visiting this establishment at all! Instead check out the nearby. Kerryman’s, O’Callaghan’s and Pepper Cannister.

Bartender (Cheryl) was great! Great selection of beers and food was pretty good. Chili had beans (big no-no where I'm from); but nonetheless very good. Absolutely get the cheese curds.

A terrific beer selection, a room with character, excellent service and good prices on drinks made for a nice pre-theater visit to Monk's Pub. Our server was lively, funny and a good source of information about the beers on tap. Besides the draft beer selection, Monk's also has a good assortment of bottled beer from many excellent breweries. I liked the funky decor of the place, especially the great old Schlitz bar lights. This place is an easy walk from the Goodman theater.

I liked the feel of this place at the onset of walking in, or shall I say "crunching" in? The establishment has an old mystic pub feel to it, even with some subtle hints of the cold cellar musty smell (or maybe I imagined to fill the gestalt of the whole.) So, my two Lebanese friends and I walked in and they were more shocked to see all of the peanut shells on the floor. I explained to them that a basket of peanuts will come with the beer and they will soon be shelling carelessly onto the ground too. At our first tap sampler, they were still timid, but after a couple more and some full-sizes of the amazing selection of beer on taps, they were throwing the shells over their shoulders with ease. I include these two friends in my review, because I think it is a fun place to meet with a group of people, have some amazing beer, and lighten any pre-existing etiquette. It is a fun place!

Monk's has an impressive list of beers from around the world. The food is regular pub fare. Better than average burgers and filling appetizers. This is a laid back place to sample some brews and hang with friends. Wish it was open weekends!

Undoubtedly one of the best burgers in the city. Don't get me wrong, I've never had a bad meal here, but the burgers are the way to go. Perfect spot for lunch or an after work get together in the loop.

Yummmmm my absolute fave to order! It's always yummy!!! It is a must try. The fries are also good as well. Good spot for lunch.

Got into the city late and found Monks. Terrific pub food and great beer selection. Well worth the visit.

Stopped by, near the theater district. Noted for their hamburgers, and did not disappoint. Turkey ruben was pretty good, but it had pressed meat. Sandwich prices were doable for a large city. Where they get you is the beer and wine. The beer offerings are some international and some craft, which drove the cost up. Two sandwiches, one wine, one small yard glass and a 4 choice 4oz sampler, with healthy tip = $60. But, hey, it's Chicago..

I love this place they alwasy have a huge selection of craft beer the food is average frozen bar food but most people come for the beer selection be careful when you walk in you don't want to slip on the peanut sheels all over the floor

My friends and I ended up at Monk's after the pizza joint was packed. The exterior intrigued us, so we stopped in. We were very surprised! Great appetizers, drinks weren't too pricey and they had a great selection of drinks! Our waitress was courteous and timely. The next time I'm in the Windy City, I'll be back here.

We could not have been more pleased with this choice. Loved the location and the atmosphere, but the service and the food was what made it! The beverage choices were not lacking, and we had to try the Kwak beer in the fun glass. Careful! Don’t break it! We will be back.

It is definitely a local hang out which I love. I got the grilled mushroom sandwich/fries for just $10 and it was very good. They have pages and pages of different beers. Bad points: It is quite dingy and dirty and looked like it hasn't been cleaned since it first opened in 1969. The service wasn't the greatest. I never got a refill and she was a little rude when we asked to have the bill split. The great food made up for the ram down look of the place and marginal service.

Most beer bars with a great selection, especially of the Belgian beers, have unnecessary attitude. Monk's is different. Overall great place to go, comfortable to hang out and watch a game too.

The layout has changed over the years but the food is still excellent. I've had burgers many times and it's one of the best in the City. Had the Grilled Cheese for the first time on Sourdough and it was excellent as well. Go early for lunch. We arrived at 11:30 on a Friday and it was practically empty. By 12:45, it was packed with people waiting outside.

We have come here twice both times on our annual trip to see the city holiday decorations. Monks has an outstanding Belgium beer and cider selection. The ambiance is wonderful as is the staff. The menu orders American fare and the sandwiches and burgers are quite tasty. Will definately return!

We were looking for a pub for lunch on a Saturday and the read great reviews for Monks. The outside is nothing exceptional... Kinda sketchy looking ...but inside the atmosphere is like a European pub with lots of antiques hanging on the walls and a massive collection of old beer pulls which is very fun. My husband loves beer and he was really impressed with the variety. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the types of beers they had on tap. And they were very interesting. Hubby was happy that they had flights.. Although it was a bit pricey. $18 for a five flight. We both had burgers.. the total burger and the chili cheese burger. Both were excellent.. Very tasty and reasonable prices $11 with 1 side. Hubby paid up for onion rings. But they were pretty average frozen rings.. Nothing special. I ordered a margarita and it was horrible... Tasted like a cheap mix with cheap tequila... Guess you don't come here for the margaritas, but they could do much better. It was $8... Which I thought was a bit much for the size and quality. Our risk bill came to $65... Which i feel is definitely overpriced for a pub lunch. Overall it's a fun local pub with great beer.

We loved Monk’s! We came here for the Belgian focused beers, and we also enjoyed the food. The inside is decorated wonderfully and it has a great atmosphere. We made reservations for 5:30pm on a Friday which was the latest they would accept. It was really crowded when we arrived and never really slowed down. Great place!

Been going since they were at the old , L-shaped location next door. The best hamburgers in the Loop. The bleu chees burger is the best, with gobs of cheese sliding down the sides. You won't be disappointed.

If you're looking for a place off the beaten path in downtown Chicago, check out Monk's Pub at the corner of Lake and Wells near the EL intersection. The atmosphere is great, they have an unlimited number of different beers to taste, and the food is awesome. It will be quiet on the street when you get there, but once you go through the big oak doors to get inside you'll find a cozy and warm place to be (and it's popular with the locals).

This place was recommended by a friend. We were in town for a weekend trip and we’re so glad we gave Monks a try! Our server was Dash and he was awesome, friendly, and helpful with selections. There are SO many different beers, ciders, meads, and other cocktails to try. I loved the mead. My husband had the bison burger with pickle fries and it was amazing! I had the grilled cheese with onion rings and it was delicious. We took cheese curds to go and those were also amazing. We’ll definitely go back the next time we are in town!

Stopped in on a Friday night after hearing they had one of the best beer selections in Chicago. That's definitely the case but it was a little on the expensive side. Didn't get a chance to try the food but from the other reviews it seems that's pretty good too. Worth a visit if you're a craft beer lover or looking for a hard to find brew.

Stopped in for late night eating. Great food. Great beer selection. Fun, old world Bavarian style pub with antique decor huge portions, great prices and super friendly attentive staff!!

The bar man was rude. He clearly didn't want to be in work and made us feel uncomfortable so we had one and left. I wouldn't go back there

Monks pub on a Friday night was busy and high energy. First impressions were the dark wood, peanut shell covered floor, old European church / library architectural details, huge bar, a large variety of light fixtures suspended from the ceiling, and the front "library" area with a wall lined with older books. The beer menu is extensive and offers flight sampling options, hard ciders and lambics. I had low expectations from a food perspective but was pleasantly surprised. My baby kale and grilled chicken salad was fresh and delicious with a really great house made vinaigrette dressing. My friend had a brisket and ground beef burger on a pretzel bun with a maple flavoring that was excellent. I would return.

Stopped in here on a Tuesday night late, with a group of people and this a great find. We sat in "the library" and had beer and some bar food. The beer selection is amazing and the atmosphere is of a pub. The good: 1. Great location across from Lake Street 2. Beer selection--extensive!! 3. Good decor 4. All around feels good in this place The bad: It got really hot in there. I opened the window because we were sitting in the libary and since that's where the smokers hung out, we had to close the window.

We went here for lunch to try the burgers. While it was after the noon rush, the place was busy. Despite that, we got seated immediately and our server was prompt taking our drink order. It took only a few minutes to get our drinks. We ordered the classic (1/2 lb.) burger and the mini-burger (which was actually a quarter-pounder), both with cheddar. We upgraded to tater tots and onion rings as the side dishes. Although the kitchen seemed busy, we got our food in under 15 minutes, faster than we expected. The hamburgers were pretty average, nothing really wrong with them (except they were a bit under-seasoned), but nothing memorable either. The onion rings were OK (the breading was maybe a little overcooked), and came with a good ranch dipping sauce. The tots were the highlight of the food -- a big portion and very crunchy flavorful. There are a number of other things on their menu besides burgers, but if you are hungry for a really good burger in the Loop area, there are better options.

Wonderful pub on Lake Street in the loop. Ouside it is deceiving...best kept secret of locals. Cute and cozy inside. Many beer choices....peanuts on table. Yummy nacho appetizer ... Stop in for the local pub feel.

I had an hour to grab a quick lunch, Monk's was a great place with friendly staff and great burger. A nice selection of beer on tap. Highly recommend the place

We went here for my birthday annual trip to the city after hearing about it on Chicagos best. Outstanding Belgium beers on tap and also a wide selection of cider beers. The food was pretty good, and many choices to chose from of appetizers, sandwiches and burgers. The ambiance was great as well. We will return!

This was a cute place with very interesting decor - lots of antique books and decorations and a ton of old taps everywhere, which was cool. Their beer selection was pretty varied and we liked all the beers we tried. They had quite a few TVs playing the game (it was during the Cubs world series GO CUBS!) and our waiter was super nice. We ate the cauliflower wings (YES! Try them!) and shared a burger which was excellent. We had curly fries with the burger, again, recommended. We tried to go back Saturday actually for a quick pint and they close early on Saturday! We were sad but we will go back the next time we are in town.

I have been to concerts that were quieter than this place. If you want to carry on a conversation, be prepared to shout. We both had our kindles with us, and just resorted to reading through dinner. My partner chose this place for the beer; when we arrived we were handed the drink menu, which the waitress opened and immediately crossed out 3 things. My partner placed his order, and she came back a few minutes later to say that was unavailable, too. So that was a little disappointing. My partner's burger was very good. My veggie burger was also good, but with every bite it fell more and more apart; by the time I was done, about half of it was bits and pieces on my plate. The sweet potato fries were excellent.

We went in one night and ate, we only went for the wide range of beers but as the staff where friendly and the beer good we stayed for food. Food was good, beer was good. Price was a little heavy. Next day we went back, just wanting to sit at the bar for a quick drink, it was totally the opposite, we where made to feel unwelcome and rushed, all because we just wanted to sit at the bar and have no service. Such a shame as after the first review it would have been a 5* but when staff are purley focused on tips it makes for an uncomfortable time.

This place will get packed but if you can get a seat, this place is amazing for beers. They have a very wide selection of eclectic european beers. The decor is pretty cool as well.

Great bar atmosphere. Food was typical bar food - the drinks were better. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but the vibe was great inside.

Great range of craft beers and good burgers. Good value. Friendly staff. Very close to the El in the loop, so convenient to get to.

Be careful of the english bartender, he's a scam artist. I ordered a stout, paid the $7 and went to look for a seat. He called me over and said I shorted him $1, which wasn't true. No big deal, I gave him a $10, he returned only $5 in change citing that wss his 'fee for tracking me down', and 'we all have bills to pay and make a living.' Second, a waitress that works there is like the gestapo of all waitresses. I attempted to sit on at least 3 tables and she insisted I couldn't sit at a table that didn't have a full party. I mentioned I was waiting for 2 people, but she was absolutely indignant and said 'I don't know how many times I have to keep telling you I can't sit you here without a full party.' Not ever returning. Be warned.

This was my second visit, and once again it was an absolute treat! The décor is interesting and has a fun vibe. Everything was clean and neat, and service was quick, very friendly, and attentive. My glass never passed half full! I wanted a great burger, and they did not disappoint. Ordered a modified version of the Smokehouse Burger, skipped the barbeque but kept the American cheese, bacon, onion straws, and chipotle mayo. The burger was huge and so tasty! I paired it with curly fries...yum. Casual, fun, delicious dining!

Stayed around the block at the Allegro and found this place when looking for a place to eat...looks like a dive on the outside, but inside I felt transported back to Ireland. The waiter was super helpful with helping us with both food and drink. Decor inside has a charming midevil feel to it. The sliders and cider were outstanding!

We all had burgers- they were fabulous. Bloody was good! Atmosphere is fun and tons of beers on tap. Loaded tots were great as well.

Great service, lots of choices for beer also good variety of food items. We had the mini cheese burgers as an appetizer and loaded tater tots and was plenty and not a huge lunch.

Great place to taste different beer and have great food. Whole place looks like European pub. Ask to try beer flight ( 4 or 5)

Good selection of beer. Very crowded, but friendly service. Bartender very knowledgeable of their beer selection. Would have liked to try their food.

You got it, this is the place for beer! Chicago offers an amazing choice of beers as a rule but here it surpasses other places with a very extensive offering in craft local, national and international beers. The music is good, the peanuts keep coming and the service is great!

I was in town for business and met up with an old friend here on a Friday afternoon. It was quite a popular place as it was very packed but we managed to find some seats at the bar. The bartender served us immediately and gave us some great options on draft and by bottle/can. Good selection of European brews and overall, just a very cozy bar. I would love to come back and try the food for a full night.

It was my second time at Monk's. It's a great place. Great selection of beers, and delicious food. Definitely would be back

Hubby and I stopped by here after a show. The beer selection is great, and the bartender who was there was extremely helpful in leading us to something we'd like. Had an awesome burger with portobello (cooked in curry?) and avacado with a spring side salad. Everything was absolutely delicious, even if it was pub food.

We all decided to cut out of work early (this included the bosses) to have some drinks at Monks Pub. It is certainly eclectic with the beer taps lining the ceiling beams. We basically all had beers over the course of a couple of hours and had fun in a relaxed atmosphere just talking.

Lots to choose from. Cool old school pub in downtown Chicago. Excellent spot for after work libations. The staff is quite nice and attentive. Beers are cold and plenty. Do expect to get a Lite. The best light the have is Amstel. They pride themselves with high quality beers yo.

That's a very nice place to drink good beer and eat some good sandwiches. That's for sure a place I want to go again when I'm again in Chicago

This is a great bar with decent food and a wonderful staff. I happened upon it while staying nearby for a work trip. Since I was there for over a month I decided to explore. I saw a great looking crowd spilling out into the sidewalk and decided to check it out. They have a ton beer on tap with great selection from local to foreign. I had the black and clue burger and it was so dang good smothered in blue cheese and charbroiled. The fries were great as well. The bartenders and the servers are spot on every time. It gets crowded around 5 PM and then withers around 10-ish. It's busy very night but not too busy to get drinks or to be served. The weekends are later , however. It's a youthful crowd mostly but the age range varies as well. No one feels uncomfortable as far as I can tell. They have tv's as well so you keep a eye on the game if you want. The bar is decorated like a 14th century pub with coats of armour, dark wood and battered wood floors (peanut shells!), a lot of stucco too. Check it out for a drink and you won't be disappointed!

A lovely friendly pub with a great host. Delicious food, especially the fried pickles! Can imagine to be a great night out, just want that holiday for us this time.

My brother and I did not expect a semi Belgian pub in Chicago but we came across one. The choice of beers was plentiful and I was happy that I could convince my brother to go for a micro brewery beer. The bar tender was nice, the food was what I expect at a bar and the prices were about right. The location at the north side of the loop makes this bar a good place for a quick, late evening dinner and beer.

I tried Monk's Pub the other day and I liked the experience. I ordered Salmon Salad and it was delicious. The only think i didn't like is the number of books wasted on decorating the place. It has a different atmosphere decorating all walls with old books. Would have preferred the books are there as is so any one wants to have a look can, but they are all trimmed to the half to fit the space. Huge waste is what I felt

We stopped in for drinks and appetizers on a weeknight based on other reviews. It has a neighborhood pub feel but has adequate seating and interesting medieval décor. The beer list is substantial with a few rotating drafts and a huge selection of bottles. I would have liked a few more drafts, especially local brands, but there is something for just about everyone and the staff is knowledgeable. Appetizers were good. We enjoyed sliders (well-prepared and simple), cheese tots with jalapenos and soft pretzel sticks with very good beer cheese sauce.

When you're in downtown Chicago, you expect to pay high prices for food and drinks, but Monk's is pretty reasonable and convenient - easy to get to by train or by foot and not overly crowded but still fun. We've been many times, and our latest visit showed that Monk's maintains its comfortable, inviting atmosphere.

I only had a burger and onion ring and a couple of beers, and cannot therefore vouch for the entire menu, but Monk's is (in my mind) what a pub ought to look like and be like. The atmosphere is great, and apparently quite a few people thinks, because the pace was packed. No burger will ever be best meal I've had in a restaurant (a question TripAdvisor asked), Monk's Bison burger on a pretzel bun was very good, as were the onion rings, and the beer list was awesome. I did not count them but there must have been at least 6-8 beers in just about every type beer you could ask for (lager, ale, stout, porter, Weissbier, etc.). The only drawback is the location. While very convenient to the Mercantile Mart, Wacker Avenue, Orleans Street area near the Chicago River, it is a bit of a walk from Michigan Avenue. I thought it was definitely worth the distance.

Stopped here for lunch recently. Four adults, one toddler and one infant. Arrived at 11:40 a.m. and were easily seated in a comfortable space to accommodate all the kid’s stuff. Glad we arrived when we did because 25 minutes later there was a waiting line out the door! There is a reason for this! The food is so good. The portions are plentiful. The beer list is quite extensive! And the service is great! Loved it here. Ordered a Buffalo Wrap w/ curly fries, a Classic burger w/ reg fries, a Black & Blue cheese burger w/ side salad, and a Trappist burger w/ curly fries. They were delicious. Beer, hard cider, and wine ordered were very good. So we recommend Monk’s for sure, but be aware of the time that you are arriving. Probably good before noon and maybe after 2 for lunch and as to dinner hard to say, but even if you arrive and there is a wait - no worries. It is all worth it. FYI - the two kids had a great time too!

A very strange and disappointing experience. Very excited to come here and walked and sat at the bar but the barman a young man was pretty unwelcoming and dismissive. At first we thought perhaps he was just trying to be cool and then realized he just didn’t give a toss. He was not forthcoming about the beer, including a throwaway comment that he didn’t drink IPAs. Left my wife without a drink because she didn’t make up her mind quickly enough I suppose. He told her that he had till 3 o’clock so that she had time to make up her mind, then refused to serve her for 10 minutes and started to wash glasses in front of us. I paid for my pint and we left. I explained to the hostess why we were leaving prematurely, but she seemed totally uninterested. Went somewhere else and had a great time. You can look at my reviews I don’t slam places often but really this place really spoiled our day. I can only think that they just didn’t like foreigners because we are from the UK.

We popped in for a quick drink, ended up staying for quite a few hours. Best beer selection I saw in Chicago, and we were served by a barman with an English accent who was quite a challenge, but ultimately really helpful and pleasant. Can't stress how high the quality of the beer here is. A must-go. Really busy at lunchtimes so get there early, or after 2pm. Will definitely be going back on my next trip in September.

Monk’s is a loop staple. I love the grill cheese and sweet potato fries. Good comfort food during the cold winters in Chicago.
Cheers to Chicago's Best Bar!
Who likes crunching peanut shells on the floor? We do! We do! There’s that and barrels of brew more going on at Monk’s Pub at Lake and Wells in Chicago, IL. Chicago Magazine calls it a “medieval fortress of a pub,” and thus far, it holds a first-place spot on our list of Loop taverns. Skip the food, make George Washington Carver proud, and eat peanuts until your heart’s content. Wash them down with an exceptionally eclectic assortment of beers (we share one!), the craftiest of craft selections we’ve found. Be sure to sit in Monk’s Library Room. And of course, participate in whatever goofy shenanigans the brew-istas are promoting that day.
