Enjoyed some Authentic Chinese food in Chinatown section of Chicago. The Waitstaff was very friendly and the sizzling rice soup was great. Quick walk to the Red line.

Nice surprise in Chinatown

By empjm |

I often avoid dining in Chinatown due to the bewildering number and variety of restaurants. My wife and I felt adventurous and picked Moon Palace at random for lunch and we were pleasantly surprised! The service was fast and courteous. Interior was very clean and nicely decorated. Even the washroom was spotless. We split a bowl of seafood noodle soup and a plate of shrimp with vegetables. Both were very tasty and portions were ample for both of us. They will validate your parking from nearby lot to lower the cost of parking to $2 for two hours. Cost of lunch was $15.50!

Our favorite place in Chinatown for at least 20 years. Easy subsidized parking nearby, also near Red Line L stop. Really fresh seafood, great hot and sour soup, mixed clientele of Chinese and American patrons.

A Must!!

We were not sure what to expect at this stop and we were thrilled to find a delicious & reasonably priced Chinese gem. It's been along time since we have a enjoyed an authentic Chinese meal this much! We made reservations that turned out to be not needed although there was steady dine in & take out business. We loved all our dishes -the only one not fantastic was the chicken fried rice (average). The service was very quick & efficient. Definitely worth trying for yourself. If you are taking a cab get his number so he can pick you up again. Can be a bit of a wait otherwise. *As a side note we read in the Where magazine (found in our hotel lobby) about a restaurant in Chinatown called "Three Happiness" we quickly looked it up on trip advisor & decided to try Moon Palace instead. What a great decision that was as Three Happiness was across the street from our stop and boy were we glad about our decision.

Consistent Quality

I'm from Michigan, and visit Chicago often. There are so many fine restaurants, I hate visiting the same place twice; but I'm having trouble not visiting this amazing bargain at ever visit. I missed it when they closed for remodeling and am thrilled that its back. Park under the 'L' station, and ask the restaurant to validate your parking - which end up at $2.00 - another bargain.

Shanghi noodle soup, delish!

One of my favorite Chicago restaurants

By sandih |

Years ago, a friend of mine who visits Chicago frequently, told me about Moon Palace in Chinatown. I went there 7 years ago and return to it every time I am in Chicago. The food is fantastic. Everything I have had is well prepared, fresh and a large enough portion. The steam dumplings are divine and my favorite thing is the Szechuan String Beans. They are to die for. The restaurant is steps from the Cermak "L" stop in Chinatown and next door to the old fire station where they filmed Back Draft. Find it, eat a great meal then wander the streets and shops of Chinatown.

Fabulous food - especially the salt & pepper fish, which is one of my favorite dishes in the city.

Excellent!

The location was great, just down the street from the Chinatown parking lot and train stop. Got validated parking in the restaurant. The food was terrific. Ordered simple wontons with kung pao chicken and it was delicious. Tons of peppers and rice with it and hot tea. Price was very reasonable. A good sign was that the place was busy with many Asians as well as Americans, and everyone seemed to be enjoying it! Would go here again for sure.

I adore this cute little restaurant in Chinatown. The staff is so attentive and very friendly. I haven't eaten anything there I haven't liked.

Great little Chinese Restaurant

By StevenVA |

I was in Chicago on business, and a local coworker took me to Chinatown for dinner. This is his favorite restaurant in the area - he says he's been going there for 30+ years. The restaurant is modernly decorated - evidently there was a fire several years ago, and it was remodeled afterwards. The food was served quickly and was quite delicious. I had egg drop soup, steamed dumplings, and the Mongolian chicken dish with white rice - all delicious! I would highly recommend when in the area - and it is very near the EL - so convenient to get to from the city.

Yummy place in China Town

By Mogirl |

This was my first time to China Town. This restaurant was really close to all the happenings. Parking was tricky because there are so many people around. We went in for lunch, there was one other gentleman eating alone. It was peaceful and elegant. The food was spectacular, I ordered Kung Pao Beef, it was spicy, but not overly spicy. The food portions are quite generous, definitely large enough to split. They bring you a bowl of rice for the table that they will keep refilling. The Chow Mein chicken wasn't fabulous, they fry the Chow Mein noodles so they are crunchy and stiff and it overloaded the plate so there wasn't much chicken and sauce. Their Jasmine Tea was delicious and the Sesame Chicken was delicious. That would be my meal of choice again.

Great way to spend Christmas Day..

By nik35805 |

I think Moon Palace is probably one of the best restaurants in Chinatown. Our family has the tradition of going to a Chinese Restaurant on Christmas Day. Over the years, we have tried different restaurants and always come back to Moon Palace. The food is great and service is awesome. The wait staff is really nice. They give extra attention to kids and all-in-all, very satisfactory. I would recommend most everything on menu.

Good Food, Good Prices

By maa-maa |

This was one of the best places we've eaten in Chicago's Chinatown. The food was above-average quality and prices were very reasonable, especially for lunch. The hot-and-sour soup was marvelous on a cold day. We had fried rice, orange chicken, cashew chicken, and shrimp and vegetables, and all were very good. I wouldn't hesitate going there again.

Amazing food and service

By Casey G |

I went here for dinner on a Friday night with my two friends. We had a reservation but the place was empty so it wasn't necessary. The food was great but the service was even better. We had a bottle of plum wine that was delicious. It's one of the nicest and most affordable Chinese restaurants I've been to.

Go there

Moon Palace is a nice, small yet elegant restaurant. We've been there twice, and the food has been wonderful. Mongolian beef is tender and tasty. The fried rice is excellent, as is the lo mein. The crispy shanghai chicken is delicious, plus the sauce is soooo yum. The Moo Shu Pork is nice, and the waitress will roll the pancakes for you. First time that ever happened Parking is fairly easy, use the parking lot on S. Wentworth. Moon Palace validates, so it's only $2.00

Best in Chinatown

By GQTravel24 |

Moon Palace is by far the best restaurant in Chinatown and one of the best Chinese restaurants in all of Chicago. Everything I have tried on the menu has been excellent and I have been here many times. The Peking duck at Moon Palace is absolutely amazing and it's one of the best dishes I have ever had! No joke. The service is very friendly and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. I will keep coming back!

Great find

By Sharon3721 |

We have been going to China Town for many, many years but have just recently eaten twice at Moon Palace. Tucked next to the fire station. Eggplant was very tasty, not mushy and did not look like a "mystery" dish often served at other restaurants. Scallops in black pepper sauce were sweet and fresh and the pepper steak was one of the best. Peking duck was excellent. . . Very tender and very crispy skin without a layer of fat. This is now our "go to" place in China Town.

Yum!

By Rgrace33 |

Not being familiar with the restaurants in Chinatown, we were easily overwhelmed, but the Moon Palace was the right choice. My friend and I both had lunch, appetizer, and drinks for $30. The pork wontons were the best I've ever had and we've been talking since we left. My garlic shrimp was spicy, well flavored and delicious. Her kung pao chicken was so tasty...this place was a great find. We walked, but it's right next to the red line and there seemed to be lots of parking available at the corner lot. I will return on my next visit to Chicago.

Good Service

By 604Lew |

We are very fond of Asian food ,having traveled extensively throughout the far east. After reading the reviews I felt we should try the Moon Palace. The food and service were very good and I felt the food was not outstanding ,but very good.We had the green onion pancake appetizer which I love at China Mama in Vegas it was very greasy here.We also had salt and pepper fish which was tasteful but could have used a little sauce .The Singapore noodles with pork was very tasty and perhaps the best dish we had. Most restaurants in China town have indifferent service, but the service is an exception in this spot.

Reliably excellent

By KingofThreePutts |

I have probably eaten at Moon Palace more than 1000 times over the last thirty years, and have never had a bad meal. Their hot and sour soup is the best that I have ever had, and their dumplings are as good as the best that I had in a recent trip to Shanghai. Moo Shu is excellent. Try the lo mein with special sauce and the duck with black mushrooms -- you won't be disappointed.

Great Food, Excellent Value

By VTtraveler4 |

In a town with ridiculous food prices, I really appreciated Moon Palace. I ate here 3 times for lunch while attending a conference at nearby McCormack Center. The first day I ordered sizzling rice soup for $7 and an order of potstickers for $6. Both items were easily big enough to share and delicious. The next time I went I had the crispy squid with salt and pepper from the lunch special $9. It was light but had complex, spicy flavor. The last time I went I had the Kung pao scallops from the lunch special menu for $9. Both of the specials came with rice and hot tea. Well worth the mile walk from the convention center.

Excellent Chinese food

By allen006 |

I love this place, but its been a while since I've been there. The wait staff is the picture of teamwork. Our waitress was efficient and knowledgeable, but every time one of the wait staff passed our table, they filled water, or removed an empty dish. We enjoyed watching the efficiency. The Hot and Soup and sizzling rice soup are very good, as is the shrimp toast. We always enjoy the dumplings. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Cashew Chicken - both were very well prepared.

A Great Dinner Spot in Chinatown

By LenEvanston |

Our friends suggested we try the Moon Palace because they recently discovered it. It was recommended to them by some Chinese friends. We had a wonderful dinner for four for $60.00 (excluding alcohol drinks). This fixed price deal was not on the menu. The meal consisted of hot tea, Sizzling Rice soup, egg rolls, Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Orange Beef, Kung Pao Diced Chicken and Moo ShuPork. It was alot of tasty food. I don't know if this fixed price menu changes.

Great Mandarin Food

As another reviewer mentioned, this place was clean with good friendly service. Their steamed pork dumplings are among the best in Chinatown and the only place we will eat Dan Dan Mein (noodles with spicy peanut sauce). Much better than the over-hyped Lao Sze Chuan.

the best crispy duck in the city of Chicago

By Nunda1 |

Moon Palace is my favorite restaurant in Chinatown, Chicago. I love the Peking Duck and the Crispy Duck- my favorite. All their dishes are delicious and my family and friends have all been able to find their favorites there as well. The atmosphere is nice but comfortable. I especially appreciate the good but unobtrusive wait staff. The prices are reasonable especially considering the quality of the food. There is a full bar. The restaurant is centrally located with ample parking close by. The restuarant is opened 365 days a year and is opened to 10 P.M. every night except Friday and Saturday when it is opened until 11:00 P. M.

Good food, good value

By Tochi4ever2000 |

The place was clean, quiet, friendly service, food was very good (not excellent.) My husband and I ordered egg rolls and spring rolls, orange chicken, and pork fried rice. We were satisfied with every single dish. The portions are good. They even validate your parking ticket I you park at the train station parking ( we did not park there). The bathrooms were clean and spacious.

Nice clean restaurant

The food was yummy a little pricey. We purchased orange chicken, shrimp and asparagus, shrimp toast, spring rolls, won ton soup (the small order was huge 8 dumplings), egg drop soup, and crab ragoon (not my favorite).

Attentive service, tasty treats, good location

By cdub333 |

With dozens of restaurants big and small within a four-block radius, competition is tough in Chicago's Chinatown. Almost as tough as parking. I wasn't sure what to expect with the Moon Palace's "Shanghai" specialties, but was pleasantly surprised. Some Chinatown eateries are massive operations, others are tiny 4-table storefronts...Moon Palace falls in between. About 15 tables, modern Chinese art on the walls, comfortable lighting and seating. Nice mix of locals, tourists and Bears fans. The Kung Pao Shrimp-Chicken combo and Szechuan String Beans were both excellent. The Salt-and-Pepper Fish was tender and tasty, as was the Black Pepper Beef. I wasn't too crazy about the Shrimp Tofu, but others in my group liked it; same with the Peking Duck (which was a real production). The service was attentive and the Tsing Taos cheap. As other TripAdvisor reviewers have noted, the subway station is a block away and a parking lot is nearby (forget about street parking on weekends). Moon Palace is at an ideal Chinatown location: midway between the older, colorful Chinatown to the south and the newer Chinatown Square. The iconic Chinatown Arch is across the street. I'm still not sure what "Shanghai-style" cuisine is, but I'd definitely return to Moon Palace.

Great restaurant

By gwatts1014 |

This Chinatown restaurant was easy to find, clean, and delicious! The prices are very reasonable and the portions are very large. I had the very spicy Orange Chicken, my husband loved his Happy Family, our friend had Cashew Chicken, which was also great. We also had crab rangoon (average), Hot and Sour soup (very good), and Egg Drop soup (exceptional). Overall, a very good restaurant. One tip: we took a taxi there which was no problem, but when we left there were no taxis to be found because apparently, we learned later, Chinatown can be sort of dangerous at night. We lucked in to a taxi who was stopping for personal shopping at a nearby Walgreens and he took us back to town. So if you take a cab at night, arrange return transportation.

Worth the trip to Chinatown

By dubaytom |

Have been to a number of restaurants in Chinatown and Moon Palace is our favorite. None of the restaurants in Chinatown are known for their decor or ambiance and Moon Palace is no different. Despite that its worth visiting for the food---we had pork with string beans and Shanghai beef which was terrific. A side order of pork fried rice was the best we've ever eaten and was a huge helping. Including a glass of wine and two beers the bill including tip was only $60 and the service was very good. Chinatown seems to have deteriorated a bit--somewhat run down and poorly kept. The water taxi from downtown is a fun way to get there, but the several block walk from the station on the Chicago river passes by some poorly kept areas. Still worth the visit for the food.
