Best Vietnamese food in downtown Philadelphia

By RutgersGuy |

We get take out from Nam Phuong every week or two. We love their soups, curry chicken dishes, rice noodle stir fries, and spring rolls. Great value, great taste.

Not a fan

By Sari Al |

This is my first time to experience Vietnamese cuisine and I have to say, it's not my cup of tea. I had the Beef deluxe Pho, the portion size was quite substantial but tasteless. Our server was not super friendly too. Personally, I would say it is average!

Sunday dinner

Large Vietnamese restaurant, extensive menu, a number of large groups, looks like families, of Vietnamese origin. Extensive menu. If unsure ask the servers. tell them your taste and seasoning and they will recommend.

Ehhh

Mediocre Vietnamese food. But Service was impeccable, so i gave it one star. We ordered the classic Vietnamese pho, bun rieu, Vietnamese crepe, iced coffee and chicken with broccoli. The chicken and broccoli- how can any restaurant mess that up? It was awful, and to charge $11 for it was out of control! The most memorable thing we had for dinner? It gotta be the iced coffee. Get the iced coffee. For a more authentic, satisfying meal, mouth watering noodle soup, head over to Cafe Diem.

Fantastic! Price is right, service is a delight and the food is outstanding. Def the best Vietnamese in the city. I disagree with my friend that there's a wet-dog odor that pervades the space.

Authentic

Good solid and authentic Vietnamese food. Good pho and vermicelli. Didn't love the broken rice. Very crowded parking lot. Big grocery store in the same strip mall that is worth a visit.

Authentic, Delicious, and what a Menu!

By Layla F |

Impressive selection, fast service and delicious food. My friend took me to this restaurant when I was visiting Philadelphia. I was looking for low fat dining options and Nam Phuong had plenty to choose from! We ordered a full spread and had enough food for two meals. The atmosphere was festive and lively, and though it was crowded, the service was not compromised. A+ all around.

Is This Old Standby Slipping?

By phillyvoyagers |

We have dined here a number of times and had good meals, however the food at our last 2 experiences was just mediocre. Our latest experience was on a Saturday night, and the service was good as always, but the food has slipped. The preparation and flavors were not as good as in the past. We ordered lemongrass tofu, which was described as spicy. It was not. What was worse, was that the fried tofu was soggy and spongy with no flavor. Stir fried flat noodles with beef also lacked flavor. The chargrilled pork with fried egg and quiche was good. The clams with black bean sauce was OK. The fish in a stew pot was good, but a smaller portion than in the past. Perhaps the kitchen standards fall on a busy Saturday night.

1st time and loved it. I had tofu with stir fried noodles. Service and food was great. Very busy area.. tough to park , but worth the wait!!

A Popular Spot But...

I can't get beyond the fact that their public dumpster area is always so dirty. It makes me question what else is going on. So while the food is fine & the menu is extensive I am never quite comfortable here.

Good food, but not the best service

By Robert N |

Another place I eat at frequently. Easy to get to restaurant in South Philadelphia. There is a parking lot that is shared with the supermarket and other stores. The food here is pretty much always good. Pretty authentic Vietnamese food. Prices are definitely reasonable. A lot of room is you want to go with friends or family. The con is not so much the food or cost, but the service. The food is brought out quickly, but that's usually the last you'll hear from the server unless you get the attention of one of them. They never come over to ask if you need a refill. They never come over to see if food is alright or if anything else is needed. Most times that is fine, but every so often it makes me want to bang my head against the table since they won't come over. Overall, it's worth the visit if you want good affordable Vietnamese food. Also not bad if you want to have semi-private conversation with a dinner party.

Fresh, Delicious, and Cheap

By Jenny E |

It tastes like Vietnam! Finally a delicious pho place. The food here was fast and the vegetables and tofu so incredibly fresh. Two bowls of vegetable pho = $11, plus fresh spring rolls which were about $3. Completely worth the trip!

Great Vietnamese food & great prices!

By Lani S |

Me & my husband ate here for under $30! I got the Beef Pho which is a basic noodle with beef in broth. My husband got the vermicelli combo meal which also had noodles & an assortment of extra's. Our daughter loves the noodles here too! My favorite are the fresh spring rolls!

Nam Phuong Excellent Meal!

By Ozgard |

Four of us ventured to Washington St in Philadelphia to visit Nam Phuong restaurant for dinner. We all ordered different appetizers and entrees. We all ordered different rolls for apps and they were all excellent. I ordered a seafood meal in black bean sauce that was off the charts. My wife ordered a shrimp dish and the others similar meals. All were more than satisfied. Our wait staff was attentive and extremely pleasant. It was our second visit here and both times we said we will be back. We will.

My favorite Vietnamese in Philly

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

Great menu - much larger than just a Pho place - though it is my favorite Pho in the city. But the star Banh Hua (sp?) dishes: pancakes you dip in water and then fill with a huge platter full of ingrediants to make your own summer rolls. Delicious and great for large groups. Also a nice array of entrees. Nice comfortable spacious dining room. Try to fruit drinks for dessert. Also very affordable.

Terrific Vietnamese Food

We always look forward to coming here. The food is delicious, affordable, and served quickly. For more pictures and comments, check out www.gustatori.com.

Our favorite restaurant in Philly

By Emily Byrne |

We love Nam Phuong and have been here dozens of times over the years (and we don't even live in the city). When out-of-town friends visit, we take them here. The beef/lime juice salad and the BBQ pork/summer rolls are must-haves. We also enjoy the pork chops with broken rice, pad thai, and last time we tried fish in the pottery. Service is quick, efficient and unobtrusive in a pleasant but no frills dining room (all tables, no booths). Parking lot is a plus.

Good Vietnamese Food, Large Portions, Popular with Asians

By pachachuck |

Near 'the Italian Market' (9th & Washington St.). Wanted to try Vietnamese food again and had heart good things about this place. 2-hr non metered street parking around this area. Had lunch there today. Comfortable decor and tables full of local Asians and others. The menu has something for everyone....lotsa choices! The spring rolls were the best. The wonton soup (VERY tasty!) had 4 large shrimp in it (surprise) and was sharable. Service is QUICK! You might want to order the 1st courses, eat part of it and then order the rest to keep from getting all your food around the same time. The portions are large and definitely sharable. We enjoyed the new flavors, prompt service and will go back with friends that love Vietnamese food!

Average at best

By _tomnguyen001 |

Average at best. We came on a Friday night. Not too many patrons. Ordered the special banh cuon and the special pho. The pho came out WARM!!! (not piping hot like it should be). Broth was just OK. Noodles is too overcooked. The banh cuon is better. Good stuffing with pork and wood ear mushrooms and came with a side of a shrimp cake. Can't say that this is a better joint than other places around Philly

Good restaurant!

So lucky to find this one open on the Sunday of a holiday weekend! Good food good service and affordable! A must try if you are in Philadelphia!

Decent food, confused service

By David M |

This is a quick and easy place to get decent Vietnamese food. The prices are very reasonable, the flavors distinct, and the vegetarian food is fresh. We went with a party of 12 and the wait staff had a terrible time getting our orders correct. Food also came out in dribs and drabs, so it was a long time before everyone had their main course. Dishes with meat in them were not as well prepared.

Mixed Review

By TimandAnnNYC |

My family went here after going to Le Viet the prior weekend. Everyone just happened to order the exact same dish as the prior weekend so we could compare apples to apples. The two grandparents preferred Nam Phuong to Le Viet. My wife and I prefer Le Viet. The two kids said both are good. I found Le Viet's bun bo hue to have better quality ingredients, the broth thicker and richer. My wife like Le Viet's banh xeo because the shell was crispier though she noted Nam Phuong's banh xeo was bigger. Taste is personal preference of course so it's great that we have two good options in the area.

A Huge Menu

By damg |

Located in an Asian mall, Nam Phuong is one of many restaurants. What sets it apart is not only the size of the menu, but the freshness of the ingredients and the low prices. The restaurant itself is like a giant dining-room, but dividers offer a sense of privacy. The waiter's knowledge of English varies from fluent to smiling! So, don't expect explanations of the dishes. But, it's worth the trip! Hope this review helps.

Great Vietnamese cooking

By lovetravel282015 |

When a restaurant is filled with Asians, you know it's going to be good. The Summer Rolls and the Pho here were the best I have yet had in Philadelphia. Parking can be a challenge in this neighborhood, but I was already down town and just walked 10 minutes from Center City(11th and Market). The restaurant is on the West side of 11th half a block South of Washington. Service is excellent.

Good food, decent service

By ashleyjacklyn |

My sister lives down the street so whenever we visit, we go to Nam Phuong when we want pho, but my other sister prefers teriyaki. I always get the pho with everything in it (tendons, tripe, etc), and it's very flavorful and tasty. The last time we went, my sister, my mom, and tables around us received their pho, but mine didn't arrive until 10 minutes later, even though we ordered the same thing. Overall, a good, reliable restaurant for pho and beef teriyaki.

New Experience

By Chris C |

My first visit to a Vietnamese restaurant. Definitely not my last. Well versed in Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisine. How did I miss this. I had clams with ground pork. Had the rice wrap thingy appetizers. Worth the 35 mile drive. Won't be my last visit.

A Gem

By Robert C |

We discovered Nam Phuong by accident, when we couldn't find a place to park in Chinatown. The restaurant is a mile or two due south of Chinatown on the fringes of "northern" South Philadelphia. It is a large family restaurant with a majority of its patrons from one Asian ethnic group or another. Last part first, last night (7/7/12), five of us, one female and four healthy eaters descended on the place and after six Sapporos,( @$ 3.50) several appetizers and more entree platters than we could finish, we were confronted with a check in the amount of $99.04 with tax, before tip. The Crab Meat and Asparagus soup is a meal in itself and one order ($6.95) gave a small bowl serving to each of us. We had Spring Rolls and Summer Rolls ($2.95 and $3.00 for two of each) and a number of main courses. I am partial to # 183-Crispy Egg Noodles topped with sauteed shrimp, scallop, crab, squid and mixed vegetables, ($9.95) My wife had her favorite, #176-Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Chicken, ($5.75) Others at the table had a beef dish, Pho with Beef, and another chicken dish.We alo had a portion of Water Spinach, sauteed greens with a little kick. The Menu has so many choices that one could dine here over and over and never come close to exhausting it None of the food is highly seasoned and the table has a tray of every kind of hot sauce one might want. The noise level is quite acceptable; none of us had to raise our voices above a conversational level to be heard and the service was friendly and efficient. There is parking on the lot that is surrounded by this mini-Vietnamese shopping center. All in all, this is a low cost find with excellent food and good service.

Great meal, fast service

My niece has never had Vietnamese food before and so I took her here. We had Banh Hoi with grilled pork and the special Pho. Both did not disappoint and my niece enjoyed the flavor tremendously. We loved the food here!

An Excellent Vietnamese Experience and Reasonable Price

By TonyDM |

I learned of Nam Phuong several years ago from my Vietnamese students who live in the Washington Avenue area. Nam Phuong is on the larger size but most tables are spaced so as not to be congested nor for the place to be excessively noisy. The service is always polite and effecient. The waiters are also most helpful. Be venturesome enough to trust their suggestions if you would like to experience dishes of a more Vietnamese kind. I have eaten there so many times that it would be hard to list everything. The apetizers are numerous and go from the slightly sweet to very savory. Any of their soups are very delicate and render fine hints of Thai basil and mint. Like soups on steroids there are the traditional "pho." Again the broth is rich in flavor. What you add to your pho is up to you. There are more varieties than you can imagine. The serving is so large that I have yet to finish one. And the price is more than reasonable. Try the wonderful vermicelli wraps where you roll your selected ingredient in the thin rice paper wrapper. Chicken, pork and beef dishes are all good, but be go beyond the regular dishes. Try the pork or fish in clay pot. If you can spend a little more money, go for a whole fish ( market price). On many occasions I have taken colleagues to Nam Phuong and for the past few years we have taken our senior class of about one hundred for a closing dinner. We ask the restaurant to create the menu for us and Nam Phuong has delighted us each time with an extensive banquet at a price that you will not even find at a hamburger joint. Try Vietnamese, try Nam Phuong and ask. Let them guide you to new adventures in food.

Excellent Vietnamese!

This restaurant was recommended by a local friend. It's located in a strip mall with several other Asian restaurants. The food was fresh and flavorful. We had a delicious meal for thirty dollars for two people. Great place for inexpensive and tasty food!

As said great service but unlike some other reviews I thought the food was not only plentfull but very good. The Salt & Pepper Squid was cooked just right and the Summer rolls were on a par with others I've had.

BEST Vietnamese in entire Delaware Valley........

By parisflygirl |

This is without a doubt the BEST Vietnamese food in the city or maybe in the entire region. I have been coming here for many years and always know that it will be consistent with great service. I brought a colleague here for dinner and she was astounded by the choices on the menu. I ordered for us, since I was very familiar with the dishes. You would not believe the portion sizes and the extremely reasonable prices. On top of that, if you go in the evening, there are white tablecloths on the tables. The service is fast, friendly and efficient. The Chef is well known and has been written up in gourmet magazines. However, the prices are more like what you would pay in Asia! I ordered 2 different types of summer rolls which came 2 to an order. Then, 2 different PHO soups. My dining partner had shrimp PHO and I had the more tradtional meatball PHO. It is a huge serving with a delicious broth, rice noodles, fresh veggies and a huge side of fresh basil, hot peppers, lime and bean sprouts. There are dozens of different choices on the menu to include Beef, Pork, Seafood, Vegetarian, Chicken/Duck, etc. Something for everyone. The waiters have been there for years, know the menu backwards and forwards and outdo themselves with great service. The total price for this feast that we had? $18.00 with tax!!! Of course, I left a $5.00 tip. We could not eat it all and the staff packed up the leftovers. It included a complimentary pot of hot tea.as soon as we sat down. They have a full bar if you are interested. You know the place is great when you see Vietnamese families eating there. It is very close to the Italian Market and there is plenty of free parking on the street and in the shopping center where the restaurant is located. They are open every day from 10:00AM to 10:00PM. Get a takeout menu to take home. I hope they never change the way they do things......it works!!!! Love this place!!!!

Decent Vietnamese Food

By Ylean |

I'm a big fan of Vietnamese food. We had the Papaya Salad with chicken and shrimp, boh la lot, and chicken stir fried in citronelle and curry. All were pretty decent, large portions. I wouldn't consider it the best I've tried but I wouldnt mind returning.

Great Vietnamese Food

By RichardWhitney |

Nam Phuong is a great place to go when you are jonesing for some Vietnamese food. They have an extensive menu at very good prices. We have tried a lot of their dishes and each one became our favorite. Nam Phuong is in the heart of the Vietnamese village near the Italian Market. One testament to the authenticity is the number of tables with Vietnamese families. And it is several generations at one table, toddlers, young kids, teenagers, adults and older folk. Unless you have 4 or more diners, you sit at extended tables, which lets you scout the dishes that the other patrons have. Feel free to ask what it is or how to eat it, the staff and diners there are always helpful.

Very authentic Vietnamese. VERY good!

Great for a large group or even just two

By h2oworks2000 |

My third time here and it was just as good as the first and the second. This time I was with a party of nine adults five of them first timers here. To cut to the chase I believe they all will be going back. Everyone raved about the wonderful tastes the variety and quality of the food. And to top it off, reasonable prices. Nam Phuong is a barn of a restaurant but do not be fooled into thinking the cafeteria like surroundings is any indication of what is coming out of the kitchen. The food is a far cry from cafeteria. It is really good. The room is filled with Asian families out for Sunday dinner as well as some appreciative non Asians. People are causally dressed but not sloppy. There are many groups of six and eight along with children of all ages. Their are groups of twenty and thirty somethings as well. In other words it is a large and diverse group happy to be here. Now if you are a visitor to Philadelphia this is not far out of your way. We took a cab from 4th and Spruce and it only ran $8 with tip. From the Ritz, the Marriot etc. it is a very short cab ride. You can also take the Broad Street bus and it is a short three walking blocks to the restaurant. We ordered the dinner for eight even though there were ten of us. We ate our fill and took home leftovers. The dinner was 9 courses including, fish, shrimp, papaya salad, beef, clams, soup, vegetables and, well there you go just too many good things to recall. The service by Jesse was excellent and he even helped the newbies by explaining how to eat certain courses. What a great waiter. We enjoyed tea, coffee, beer and other drinks with our dinner. We ordered a special appetizer and the dinner for eight and it cost us less than $30 each with a 20%+ tip. If I were visiting another city and someone sent me to a restaurant like Nam Phuong I would be very pleased.

Most Importantly

By Herstory_62 |

Pleasing ambiance with crystal chandeliers, cloth covered tables, soft music, interesting art, excellent service, a remarkably extensive menu, and, most importantly, very good food (with plenty left over to take home)!

Just as Good the Second Time

By panamama |

Nine months later we are back in Philadelphia and I just had to go back to Nam Phuong to see if it was as good as I remembered. Indeed. Best Vietnamese lunch ever!

The best Vietnamese food in Philly hands down!

By victorkomd |

We used to goto the Thai/Vietnamese place (Pho Xe Lua) on Race in Chinatown but parking is challenging there. We first came to Nam Phuong 4 years ago and return at least 6 times a year. The house special rice vermicelli is my favorite and they also serve a scrumptious pad thai. The pho broth is divine and the spring rolls are a can't miss. They have a ton of tables and I've never had to wait when going on a weekday night. The chicken sauteed with lemongrass and crispy egg noodle dishes are also favorites of ours. There is also a separate vegetarian section.

I enjoy the food here as...

By Owen B |

I enjoy the food here as much as I do at Vietnam. The atmosphere is bigger, busier, and less formal; but the Country-Style Cubed Beef on Watercress is (insert cliche here). The sauce is salt-tastic! Also recommended: the Grape-Leaf Appetizer, Wonton Soup, and Summer Rolls.

A Notch Above the Rest

By Connie L |

Went for an early dinner. A few of years ago I went to a different Pho restaurant in the same complex. That restaurant was like a big college cafeteria so I expected a similar atmosphere. But I was wrong. While a casual restaurant, the tables had white linen tablecoths and nice clean bathrooms. The service was quick and efficient. Our server was very helpful in explaining the various dishes and answerinjg our questions. We started off , as always, with a summer roll. I was very pleased to find the roll cut in half and a manageable size. The menu was extensive. As always there were various condiments on the table so you can doctor your dish to your taste and heat level. Very good food. As they say - if the locals eat there it must be good.

Fast Service

By justine s |

Large menu including cocktails. Attentive service and resonably priced. Had to wait for a parking spot, that says it all.

Delicious Pho Soup

By Forza_Nico |

The Pho soup was delicious....the beef broth was rich with flavor, the beef strips were tender and the generous amount of noodles were delicious. They provide lime wedges, Alfa sprouts, jalapeño slices, and Asian basil leaves to add to the soup. It is a meal in itself. I also ordered the lemon grass chicken with sliced sweet peppers. The dish was slightly spicy with a delicate lemon flavor. The menu is extensive so take your time ordering. The soup however is a must try. Courteous service and very fast. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Overall very good Vietnamese Restaurant, Reasonable Prices and HUGE Menu

By GGWD |

We had lunch on a Sunday, all had varying Pho dishes. Service was good and attentive, menu is overwhelmingly large, so lots of options. Pho was very good, but have had better. I'd put it at a 4/5 on the scale. It was crowded and popular so clearly the locals know this is a good spot for lunch. Pho was around $10 each so very reasonable and they brought green tea immediately when you sit down which I thought was really nice. A definite YES.

The Best Pho and Wraps around

By MiouMiou |

We have eaten here at least 6 times in the past two months, twice actually driving up to Philly just to eat at this restaurant. The prices are very, very reasonable and the portions are enormous. The food is what really brings us here though. For starters, we tried the summer roll appetizers with shrimp. The shrimp were fresh, the rolls were not greasy and they were tasty. At $3.00 for two, they were a bargain. We always get the same basic thing here, because it is so delicious. We love their "wraps" (Banh Hoi or Vermicelli). We have tried the grilled ground beef wrapped in grape leaves with vermicelli, the Thit Nuong, which is charbroiled pork with vermicelli, and the Ba Vi, which says it is for 2 people but would easily feed 6. That is a combination plate with shrimps on sugar cane, beef in grape leaves and grilled meat balls. These dishes range in price from $7.95 to $22.95 for the Ba Vi, but again, that is a complete meal and plenty of leftovers. The food is served on huge plates, with a hot bowl of water so you can soak the "wrap" to soften it and add the food. It also comes with lettuce, cucumbers, basil, rice paper (for wrapping) and ground peanut, as well as numerous sauces. The food has always been fresh and delicious. Their Pho (or beef noodle soup) is out of this world. Don't even think it is like a can of soup you would have at home. This is a huge, fragrant bowl of soup, my favorite is the Pho Dac Biet, which has in it eye round steak, well done flank, fat brisket, soft tendon, beef tripe and beef balls. It is basically a giant delicious bowl of meat with liquid. Also included is a huge plate of fresh bean sprouts, basil, onion, cilantro, scallions, lime and hot pepper. Add all of those items to your Pho, it makes it even more delicious. We have always had to bring a huge container home, truly this is a very large portion of food for only $5.95. If some of the ingredients in the deluxe pho scare you (the tripe, etc.) you should try it anyway because they are experts in making it, but you can get a regular pho with sliced steak, flank, beef balls, chicken, or beef stew. There are 314 different items on the menu to choose from, and they all sound delicious, but in this particular case, we have been enjoying the pho and wraps so much we have not tried anything else yet. The restaurant is clean, the waiters are very friendly, and if you don't understand something on the menu they are more than happy to explain it. Enjoy.

Avoid at all cost

By Fitzy1234 |

I called before we came to see if it was OK to arrive at 9:30 even though they closed at 10. They said yes. We got there and were given a table without a tablecloth – the only one that didn't have a tablecloth. The moment our food was served the dim lights came on very bright and the waitstaff started bussing all the tables making very loud banging noises. They all then began cleaning the floors with a very smelly cleaning solution that overpowered the smell of the food and made eating a horrible experience. The mops were out, the cleaning solution was overwhelming and the noise was horrendous. And for this we had to pay! An Overall terrible evening at a restaurant.

Our absolutely favorite Vietnamese restaurant!

Consistently delicious. This has been our favorite Vietnamese restaurant since before they moved to this location. Since then, it is always largely populated by Vietnamese Americans including some extended family members.

Typical Vietnamese Restaurant on Washington Ave

By gary0316 |

MY wife and I went to Nam Phoung for dinner. It was a recommended by another web site I subscribe to. We eat "ese" food (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.) at least once a week. Parking in the lot is a plus and even though it was crowded we had no problem finding a space. I was surprised to see a white tablecloth diningroom restaurant. We were seated quickly but we were placed at a table for eight with four rather loud ladies taking up 6 spaces. The moved but clearly were'nt happy about it. There were other tables available. It was a cold windy night and the room was chilly. We had Pho which we shared. The broth was not a flaverfull as we have had other places but the meats, tripe and tendon made up for that. Next we ordered a Vietnamese Crepe-the filling was okay but the outside was somewhat burned. and Last we ordered Fresh Beef Marinated with Basil and Lime Juice. The amount of meat was exceptional but the sauce lacked flavor. Overall it was a below statndard meal. Nothing was bad but it wasn't up to what we normally get in restaurants of this type. Service was good and pleasant.

They Close at 8:30

By John F |

The web states that they close at 10p, and they will tell you that they close at 9p but really they close at 8:30p. Service stops, everyone starts cleaning up, and the experience takes a sharp turn south. But the food is good if you can get there by 7p. I have been going there since they were located over on Christian St. Their prices have more than doubled so I do not go as often. And the food is almost as good as it was. But overall I would say they have become about the same as most Vietnamese places. I have been looking around at others. Some others have better ambiance. Nam Phuong is a big room with tables. No booths and no real privacy so it's reminiscent of a school lunch hall. A bit loud and all staff attend to everyone. I prefer to have dinner around 8p so another restaurant will have to be found that does not close at 8:30.

Surprisingly Affordable!

By DEC21 |

My brother brought me and my boyfriend here for a late post Christmas snack...we had more of a snack because the prices were so affordable and the atmosphere was inviting that we stayed longer and ate more. The grilled pork chops and broken rice dish; super delicious!! Summer rolls...you have to try and the pho soup always a staple and filling. This establishment is great for large groups, they have plenty of space and big round tables. I'll be recommending this to my friends and be visiting again real soon!!

Pad Thai to die for!

By Brittle_61 |

Every two weeks, we head into Philly to visit one of the Asian supermarkets on Washington St. We usually take the opportunity to have brunch at one of the local restaurants, and for our last two trips, we tried Nam Phuong (which shares a very overcrowded parking lott with our favorite supermarket). This is one of those no-nonsense restaurants where you get seated straight away, hot tea is delivered and your order taken within a minute or so, and then your food is out within 5-10 minutes. Everything is very fresh and tasty here, and the portions are generous. So what Vietnamese delicacies have I enjoyed my last two visits? Actually, I ordered the pad thai off their list of specials. I have to admit to being a little dubious the first time I ordered it (I was breaking one of my food rules that if you go to an ethnic restaurant, it is always best to stick what they're known for). As it was, any reservations disappeared when my meal arrived and I took my first mouthful. It was absolutely sublime. An incredible taste explosion that I just couldn't get enough of. I find that mix of shrimp, chicken, peanut and perfectly cooked noodles addictive. After inhaling my meal, I tried to determine why it had been better than any pad thai I had previously, and the only thing that I can come up with is that their use of fish sauce, which just gives it that fuller, richer, more multi-dimensional taste. We went back to Philly yesterday, and I turned down every other brunch suggestion, saying that I wanted to go back to Nam Phuong, and have the pad thai again, if it was on the special menu. Sure enough, it was on there, and it was just as good as the last time. My wife had the seafood curry, and while she said that it was good, she was disappointed that it used artificial crab sticks (I shudder at those.. what an abomination). Great food, fast service (albeit a little business-like, as another reviewer mentioned) and great prices. Next time, I promise to try something else.

This is our go to restaurant for Vietnamese food in Philadelphia. Sure parking is difficult on weekends, but I have always found a space and a lot easier then downtown. The food is always fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. Service is quick and usually friendly.

Fun Philly Pho

By Herstory_62 |

Including a variety of classic Pho bowls, the menu of Vietnamese & Thai dishes is extensive & service super efficient. The festive Friday night crowd, including young families, confirms & enhances the attractions of South Philly's vibrant Asian neighborhood.

Fab food as always!

I love the food at this restaurant, it's always very busy and the service is quick, will totally be back and highly recommend.

It is great!!

By Ducanh1998 |

I'm vietnamese and eating here definitely brings back the flavor and the taste of my homeland. The food is tasty although the service is not excellent due to the large number of people. In the end it is an amazing experience.

Enjoyed the food! Huge selection.

By frani48 |

This is not the first time I have gone to this restaurant. It is large and can accommodate large parties and is was a great place to take young children. We were 8 people and everyone enjoyed their meal. Most has "bun", some with vegetarian add-ons, some with meat, fish or chicken add-ons. Their bubble tea and smoothies were good alto. I just wish they had Vietnamese beer.

Good for Groups

This is in the "Phở Heaven" area of South Philly, lots of darn good beef noodle soup spots all around. Nam Phuong continually gets my business because they have more than great phở and tables for when your family visits. The menu is huge and I have yet to be disappointed.

A big, crowded place with very good food reasonably priced.

By Allan |

We were there with a party of 8 on a Sunday night. It was very busy, but they have lots of large tables, and we were seated right away. The friendly, if business-like, staff took care of us very well, at whatever pace we wanted. Delicious apps to share, and of course lots if choices on the menu. Everything we tried was very good, and very reasonably priced. The ambiance is one of a very noisy, bright restaurant, but we certainly recommend the place.

Good size restaurant.

Foods are good and they served very fast. Prices are reasonable for each portions. I will come back here again.

Great Vietamese food

By Gene L |

Living close to Nam Phuong we go at least twice a month. I love their salt & pepper squid, but try something new at least every other time. The menu is huge and I never had a bad meal there. The servers know the menu and are always ready to offer a suggestion. Large table are available if your whole family comes for dinner.

Good Food Spoiled by Deplorable Service

By Joseph M |

Our recent group dinner was spoiled by a blatant example of negligent service. Nam Phuong has been our favorite Vietnamese restaurant for years, but yesterday evening the restaurant’s substandard service may serve as a cautionary tale. The problem started when a member of our group requested a fork and knife and glass for a beer. The waiter ignored the request. After a 10 minute wait, I tracked down another waiter who complied with the request. Our food was good as usual. However, after finishing eating we waited about 10 minutes for the table to be cleaned of dirty plates – to no avail. I then approached the hostess (manager) who asked the same waiter to bus our table. The waiter ignored the request and after waiting 10-15 more minutes, we gathered the dirty dishes ourselves and brought them to the bus station. Only then did the waiter reach for a few dirty dishes, but he managed to leave one dirty dish in the center of the table – was this his statement! We complained to management again, but were not satisfied that anything would be done about the issue. I wonder if abundant clientele has inured management to the importance of decent, respectful customer service.

Favorite spot for vegetarian soup!

By Shannon M |

Being a vegetarian with a meat-loving partner, it's important to us to find places where we both have options. We literally eat here at least once per month! We've even introduced some of our friends to the restaurant, and they're hooked. It's so delicious-- for both vegs and meat eaters! I'm obsessed with their soup!! Their vegetarian broth is so flavorful!

One of my favorite

I love the food there. And go back as often as I can. Servers are nice and fast. I drive 45 mn to go there and wish it was closer. Took the family and everyone loved it.

Best Vietnamese Food Ever!

By panamama |

The best Vietnamese food I have ever eaten. It made me so happy! You have to look around and see what everyone else is eating. They have make your own Nim Chow, or fresh rolls. In Vietnamese it is called Banh Hoi. They bring the rice wrappers and hot water to your table and a plate of vermicelli and lettuce and herbs and pickled carrots and diakon. We ordered it with ground beef. The ground beef came rolled up in leaves like Greek stuffed grape leaves. They were divine. You dip your rice wrapper in the water, put it on your plate, fill it accordingly, dip and eat. Additionally we got a Vietnamese vegetarian crepe to share. I had tea and my lunch mate had Vietnamese coffee (individual drip coffee with condensed milk). The staff was warm and pleasant and helpful as we were the only non Asians in the place. I can not wait to return and eat my way through the menu. What a find! After lunch we went across the parking lot to the Vietnamese grocery store to buy the ingredients to attempt to make the Banh Hoi at home. There the stock boy and some Vietnamese grandmas all helped up figure out what to buy. We had a great time!

Can’t wait to go back again!

We came on a recommendation. The beef pho, spring rolls and pan fried noodles were amazing. Great service, food came out quickly. Definitely will be back again.

Incredible menu- authentic dishes- something for everyone

By Ernest M K |

This was an early New Years Eve dinner. They were modestly crowded for that time of day; 4 PM. We were seated and promptly served hot tea. The menu is very intensive with many choices. Prices are very reasonable and large. We wound up splitting a salad with shrimp, pork and chicken; a pork dish with a quiche and a coated cellophane noodles and finished it off with roasted quail.

Bad food, Good Service

By Travelergirl998 |

I went there two weeks ago for dinner.. I have had a lot of Vietnamese food and this food was not good. The pho was boring and tasteless, and the appetizers were equally bad. The smoothies are too sweet but not tasty. The people who work there are super nice, if only they could cook

Kept coming back

By Gene L |

Dinner yesterday was a treat. Running late for the theater, the food arrived at our table minutes after ordering, hot and tasty as ever. This is not our first visit. The quality of the food, the selection on the menu all at a fair price makes this our go to Vietnamese restaurant

Great food! Needs a good cleaning!

By Dougmg |

Food is just lovely. One of my favorites! And they really need to do a thorough scrubbing. From the slimy smudged entrance windows to the filthy men's bathroom. Please guys get scrubbing!

Not Impressed

By RockDoc50 |

We came here with high expectations given the TripAdvisor rating and reviews. However, we ended up disappointed. The restaurant has a lot of tables, but has an unclean feel to it. We sat at a table by a window and the ledge and moldings appeared dirty. The menu is expansive. We focused on some appetizers and salads along with one main dish (mussels). The soft spring rolls (summer rolls) were ok, but not at all distinctive. The chicken salad was poor, with a scant amount of dry chicken and overdressed with a too-sweet vinegary dressing. The grilled shrimp vermicelli with lettuce wraps was a disaster. The vermicelli was stuck together like glue. There wasn't enough lettuce to wrap everything. The mussels were the worst. A place of shells with about 7 or 8 mussels smothered in onions instead of the basil that was what we ordered. Overall a big fail. We will not return.

Great meal at a great price!

By KidLove |

Went here with my family and they all had chicken pho while I had the bun rice dish. It was all very good and the service was excellent. Bach our server did a good job and our tummies were filled with wholesome deliciousness. The meal was $42 with the tip which is a deal. Will come back sometime in the future.M

Can be noisy but it's families

By Steve A |

Our fave waiter went back to VN to be with his family. We will survive. We eat here with two to six others in our extended family as often as we can, 3-4 times a year. Service can be a little spotty but the food is very good. Haven't had a bad meal in 6 years.

Excellent Vietnamese Cuisine in So Philly

By berniemcg29 |

Our friends AND our son both independently recommended Nam Phoung on Washington St in South Philadelphia and were we pleased. The restaurant is a boisterous family styled venue with a huge menu of regional favorites. It is Located at the back of a strip mall of Asian markets, services and restaurants. The group of us was very hungry and dove right into the appetizers of generous Asian salads, tasty and surprising clam and asparagus soup, and hearty vegetable rolls. We had several tasty varieties of Pho, spiced and flavored to please. The broth was thick and delicious. The noodles were filling. The Clay Pot Stew with pork and veggies was perfectly satisfying with a dark, husky flavor or pepper and greens. Another entree of braised short ribs sealed the dinner deal. Everyone loved their main dishes. The room accommodates many patrons, with several groups of multi-generational families and couples talking and enjoying each other. Service is excellent, attentive and very quick. If there was one downside to the evening it was that the appetizers came at the same time as the entrees. There is a small bar. Credit cards are fine, but not AMEX. Parking is available, and the lot is crowded.

This is not a trendy place, just good authentic Vietnamese food, with many vegetarian options and no-nonsense service.

Great 1st night in Hanoi

By Trickydineen |

Went for a walk around the lake to relax after arrival in Hanoi and to took for place to grab a bite to eat. After looking at several menu we decided in Num Phuong. The restaurant is very smart and the staff are so happy to help. Price range is fair to expensive but worth every penny. There is a personal touch where one waiter looks after you all night and not everyone in the place. After a lovely dinner we were invited to take photos of the band playing local music will which I thought was really nice as it's great photo memory. Would go back tomorrow.

Veru Good Carry Out

By Karen S |

We picked up an order for carry out from Nam Phuong. The spring rolls were very good; I really enjoyed the marinated carrot slices included with the rolls. The portion of rice included with the entrees was much more generous than other places I have been. I had the Vietnamese chicken with mixed vegetables. It was good, but a little bland. I hadn't wanted anything too spicy, so next time I will be more adventurous.

Seems Dependable But Not Outstanding

By ScottWashDC |

There were two of us, and our selections were therefore limited. That said, the pork spring rolls were served almost immediately, suggesting they're being made non-stop and may sit in the kitchen for a while before being served. They were not really hot. The wait for the vegetarian spring rolls is considerably longer, but they're served very hot and are a better pick. The rice noodle with beef was very flavorful and the beef tender enough to cut with a fork. Its sauce was very fatty though, and this isn't a dish to order if you're counting calories. The pho was made of the absolute freshest ingredients, but unfortunately the broth was bland and cannot be recommended. Located in a busy, interesting, predominantly Asian plaza, the restaurant is very busy on weekends, and you may have a bit of a wait for a table. This is a very family-friendly restaurant with many dishes served family-style at over-sized tables to accommodate large groups. The vegetable platters being served at other tables also looked as though the freshest ingredients were being used. Down-sides include tight parking on the property, questionable cleanliness of the restaurant (including bathrooms), and the occasional funky smell that other reviewers have commented on. On balance, not bad. But the problems noted will keep slightly more discriminating diners away.

Great taste

Comfortable seating, nice staff, quick and efficient service. Good Asian foods you can choose. Good value for money. Will come back some day.

Fresh & Delicious Vietnamese Food Served by a Friendly Quick Staff

By Kris R |

My boyfriend and I had an odd craving for what we call "Vietnamese Fajitas," filled with vermicelli and fresh veggies, and we looked this restaurant up online. We dubbed this an adventure beyond our usual 6 block radius of center city. Great choice! At first we were a little uncertain getting out of the cab in the middle of a completely Asian strip mall with little to no English to be read anywhere, but this was all part of the adventure. The staff warmly welcomed us into the restaurant which was very clean and had tacky crystal decor. We give them credit for even seating us as we walked in only 45 minutes before closing. We were not sure what to expect but the decent-sized crowd which was a mish mosh of all sorts of people led us to believe this restaurant would probably live up to its reviews. We ordered some pho, shrimp vermicelli, spring rolls, and some chicken and pepper dish. We thought at first that this would be too much food for the two of us but we pretty much finished everything! It was so good! (Oh and our bill with tip was something around $30! What a deal!) Our "fajitas" came out in plates heaped with freshly chopped vegetables and herbs. Delicious! We also loved the chicken dish - wish I could remember the name! The pho noodles were very good but we both agreed the broth was not very good - we ordered one of the sirloin pho choices. Next time we may go with a vegetable or chicken base for better flavor. We really wanted to sample some of the Asian beverages and desserts but time was short. We will definitely be back for more!

Great Viet in South Philly

By Caroline L |

Parking can be a pain here on weekends as the lot for the market is insane and the street parking is just as busy. But it's worth the walk from a far spot for some cheap but good eats. Hubby loves the bo luc lac here so we ventured down here for lunch while in Philly, especially for that. I like their hu tieu my tho so that's my usual go to here and as filler we got the cha gio app (tasty but i prefer traditional rice paper wrap). We washed it all down with some refreshing young coconut juice and were on our way. Quick and tasty lunch. They would have gotten 5 stars if the entire staff hadn't been lined up right by our table watching the diners. Threw of the lunch vibe for me as i was facing the 8-10 people standing around waiting to serve....

Not bad Pho

Try their Pho and some rolls. Generally they were good. Noting special to expect but not bad food. May some other Vietnamese restaurants next time.

Best Vietnamese in Philly

By FRWL |

This is our favorite stand-by for when we need guaranteed delicious food! We come here often by ourselves, family, friends -- even had a Chinese New Year banquet with a group of 24 [yes, in a Vietnamese restaurant!] The pho IS the best around -- and we tried a number of places. Their summer rolls are always fresh, and a quick delivery to the table. Papaya salad is our fave, as well. everything on the menu [cubed beef, whole fried fish, soft shell crab, cury chicken, bird's nest, spicy seafood soup] is absolutely fabulous! Never had a single bad dish at Nam Phuong. The only thing they are missing is a delicious dessert.
