Chinatown Go To

By SatnamYMas |

We always end up here in Philly's Chinatown for a few reasons (1) food is good, (2) it is always open, (3) food I'd d cheap, (4) has a bathroom

Best Noodle House!

By Sharilyn K |

If you haven’t been here, go ASAP and try their hand drawn noodles! Everything we tried was delicious but the noodles were the highlight. Ahhh-mazing!

Not to be missed when in China town

By travelofoodies |

A restaurant not to be missed if you are visiting Philadelphia or even if you are a resident here. There are way too many noodle places in China Town as you would have guessed, buy this one is fantastic. The hand drawn noodles which of course are their speciality. We have been here few times and never get tired of dining here. One of our most favorite is the chicken stir fried noodles. We always have this along with some other dishes. Not a big fan of their appetizers especially the coconut chicken curry dumpling, so skip this one for sure. Buy over all lots of dishes to choose from and you won't regret eating here.

Wow just WOW!

I love authentic northern Chinese food and Nan Zhou just was perfect. We had Scallion Pancake which my wife loves and Gong Vegetable in spicy sauce. The pancake was good but not the best one I ever had but good but the vegetable was off the chain good. A slow heat that would build up and hit a nice high note balanced with sourness and salty. Lots of crunch. We had hand pulled dry noodle with peanut sauce which was really great and made even better when I put some of those Gong vegetables on mine. Really good bounce to the noodle and a sauce that added to the flavor not over powering My wife does not care for cilantro or spinach or any of those green things and we had the hand shaved noodle with brisket which would normally have them in there. Our waitress took the time to understand with faulting English that I wanted those things on the side. I know it was hard for her and she took time to make certain we were happy. A request for side bowls so we could share also happily brought no charge Well we had left over soup! And I asked for a little bit of extra broth - again no charge The meat was so tender and the broth aromatic with a scent of Jasmine. I added some vinegar and hot oil to mine and right off the chart just perfect in every way. I asked if my wife could watch the chef make the noodles and he went and made a small batch so she could see. So accomodating. If the food was just great and it is I would give it 5 stars If the service was just great I would give it 5 stars The fact that our whole bill was only $24? Are you serious? Is there a 6 or 7 star rating I can give this place? Cant wait to visit again!

More great food in Philadelphia

By Sandra P |

Other reviewers tell nothing but truth when they endorse Nan Zhou My only disappointment was that I couldn’t see the noodles being pulled. I saw this when traveling to Shenyang in Liaoning China and noodle pulling is a fine and beautiful art. The food was delicious and service quick. Portions were ample and made me recall the flavors of China. Enjoy when in the neighborhood or make a special trip Delicious.

Very Enjoyable Lunch. Worth a Visit.

By wjs777 |

We were visiting Philly and wanted to have some authentic Chinese food in Chinatown. Looking at various review sites to find a place to visit, Nan Zhou repeatedly came up. Well we were not disappointed. The food was excellent. We had the hand drawn noodles both as a stir fry and their soup. The staff was friendly and efficient. It was a welcoming, but simple environment. I am looking forward to bringing our family for a visit in the future. It is well worth a visit if your looking for authentic quality Chinese food.

Great!

I tried Scallion pancakes and roast duck noodle soup. It was all very hot (temperature-wise) and tasty! Service was quick and nice. Cozy comfortable setting, seemingly with a lot of business. Cash only. Would love to return!

Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House

By TheIdealCouple |

Delicious winner here! Wish I could give a deserved 4.5 rating rather than the 4.0 rating but it’s not possible to give half ratings. (Let me point out that Nan Zhou ONLY accepts cash.) Nan Zhou is located in the Chinatown area of Philadelphia. The food at Nan Zhou tastes fresh with great flavors. The noodles taste freshly made. The noodles taste so good that they can been eaten by themselves. I ordered the House Special Meat Ball Noodle Soup (pictured with this post). The flavors are exceptional. My wife and son ordered their own meal and they fully enjoyed their meals. The portion size of the meals is large enough to share. Our dinner (three entrees, two appetizers, smoothies and soft drinks) was reasonably priced. Service is good and attentive. Our food came to our table quickly even though the restaurant was very busy. And yes. It was busy. Busy with what appeared to more locals than tourists. That says a lot to me about a business when locals patronize it. Nan Zhou is definitely worth a meal! Oh, let me reiterate. Cash only.

As good as the review and more!

I am my Asian food lover. Noodle are my thing. This place is a gem in Philadelphia. Delicious dumplings, great rice and awesome noodles. Next time I come to Philly will eat here again. Ahh and the prices are more than fair!

Yummy!

Easy location, next to conference center. Noodles are hand made, with tasty beef soup! Service is efficient and Price is reasonable!

My favorite cheap eat shop

By Andraparrell |

I am a Philly local and I love this place. The food is very in expensive and never fails to be amazing. Any time I have a friend come in from out of town I take them here because it represents the best of Chinatown. I would highly recommend the pork with soy sauce noodles and the pork and chive fried dumplings.

Great food.

By Jeff J |

We went and really enjoyed the noodle duck soup. Very reasonably priced. So reasonable we also ordered smoothies. All was delicious. Place was clean with friendly staff. We will be back.

Good food & great price

By Bingersgirl |

Have had a few meals here, latest being the beef brisket noodle soup. Yum! I got it to go & they boxed the hand-drawn noodles separately so it didn't overcook. Brisket was a bit fatty but terrific flavor, and only $7.50! The green tea smoothie is quite good too! I'll upload a picture too. *The restaurant looks a little "worn" but the food is good.

Fresh Noodles-Reasonable Price

By David L |

There are a couple of options for noodles: hand drawn (hence the name) or shaved noodles. You can get any one of a variety of stir-fried noodles or noodle soups with your choice of noodle. Add chili oil, soy sauce, or sriracha and enjoy! Definitely one of the best hand drawn noodle houses in the area. It's a quick but quality meal. They only accept cash, so leave the card at home.

Delicious Noodle Soup

By viajero5 |

I had read favorable reviews of this restaurant and they were spot on. I ordered the spicy hand drawn noodle soup and it was delicious(not sure of the name but I think the first item on the menu under soups). The broth was very rich and tasty. The noodles were wonderful. The amount of spice was perfect. The restaurant looked to have been fairly recently remodeled. The staff was very efficient and I was served very quickly. Although I was there for a pretty early dinner, the place filled up and seemed to be very popular. As others have mentioned, it is cash only. I would definitely return here for a meal the next time I'm in Philly. It exceeded my expectations.

Excellent meal. Great value

By bporourke |

This place seems to be always crowded but that's a good thing. Don't have to wait very long and the food is excellent. Brisket soup was awesome. Good service. Would certainly go back again.

Nice and big bowl!

By JiangP03 |

A big bowl of delicious noodle at low price! A nice place to visit for Chinese noodle. Recommended to all!

Tasty food ?

By Alexandre LC |

I really don’t advise this restaurant . First the servers were absolutely unfriendly, when we asked for something they seemed really bored . Then , the food , the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever eaten ! No taste . Really disappointed.

My Gold Standard!

By Rick C. |

I love Pho and Ramen restaurants but I'm always hoping one will taste as good as Nan Zhou Noodle House. It hasn't happened yet. I don't get to visit Philly often but, while eating a Philly Cheesesteak is an occasional treat, stopping for noodle soup here is a necessity.

Go for the soup, not the service!

By FinanceGuy99 |

The hand drawn noodle soup was delicious, and I would definitely go back. The server never smiled once, and could have not cared any less that we were spending money, but I wasn't offended. I was there for the great food, so I'll give her a pass.

Fresh homemade noodles-very flavorful

By dpeacht |

We stumbled upon this place with our nephews after visiting the Franklin Institute and were surprised how quickly our fast food junkie nephews were drawn to the delightfully hand drawn noodles. While one loved the pork, the other loved the appetizer beef. My husband and I shared one of their signature soup dishes & finished off the 9 year old nephews noodles. Portions are quite large, so factor that in if you have children. I believe this is a cash only place, very reasonable for quality & quantity!

Meh. Actually quite disappointing

By Jordan L |

The environment is fine, and the food well priced. The soup broth tasted pretty good. Servers were far from friendly, "beef brisket" (as mentioned in other reviews here) is literally just big chunks of fat (and not at all tasty). Shrimp fried noodles included only noodles and shrimp (duh?), But were no better than any corner Chinese restaurant. Don't bother.

Noodles Option

By Audrey C |

Philadelphia Chinatown has many restaurant. Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodles is one to try. The bowls of noodles are generous and the broth flavorful. I tried the beef tendon bowl and while the tendon pieces were tender and tasty, I wish the amounts were as generous as the hand drawn noodles. The noodles were delicious though. I do recommend Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodles for a bowl of hearty soup noodles.

Fantastic lunch

By David F |

We were in Philly for a school event for our son and wanted to try a restaurant in China Town. Based on reviews we decided on Nan Zhou and are we glad we did! I always know I am going to get some great and authentic Chinese food when I am about the only American in the place. We had dumping appetizer and something that is like a Chinese pancake (can't recall the name). I had won ton and we had stir fried noodles (hand drawn) with shrimp and daughter had it with chicken. When the waitress brought the main course she had a scissors and asked if we wanted the noodles cut. A bit confused we told her "no we are good". Probably should have taken her up on the scissors. Never seen noodles like this. Simply fantastic and the shrimp were perfect. This place is a must if you are in Philly and like Chinese food.

Good Chinese food at a great price!

By James W |

While visiting Philadelphia, we tried to do and see as much as possible. We thought visiting Chinatown would be interesting. We looked up the highest rated Chinese restaurant, and this restaurant came up. The blue street sign was very unassuming, as was the interior. Then you see the Zagat ratings pasted everywhere, and you understand why. FYI, they only take CASH or Venmo, but they have an ATM in the entrance. They have great prices and a typical Chinese restaurant menu. They even have Boba tea. The waiter was kind and quiet-spoken, and when we were struggling to eat our peanut noodles, he brought us scissors to make it easier. You know it's a good place to eat when locals go there, and it had plenty of Chinatown residents even though it was between lunch and dinner time. It's definitely worth your time.

Wonderful Meal, Wonderful Atmosphere

By Julie U |

We wound our way through the streets specifically to find this restaurant and I am glad that we did. It was packed and we shared a table with a nice man who seemed to be a regular. The service was quick and no-nonsense. The hand drawn noodles were just wonderful.

AMAZING!!!

By Juanchoborda |

Wow!! What a great place!!! With so many restaurants in Chinatown in Philadelphia, this one is superb!!! The soup with noodles was outstanding!! The fried dumplings were delicious - caution they are made to order and they are hot not spicy. I would highly recommend this place. Bring cash - no credit cards accepted. Enjoy!!

Just what we needed after a long day!

By bell-lap |

Our family of four attended an event at the Philadelphia Convention Center on the weekend. On the Saturday, the event ran until about 9:15 pm. We had hoped to go to the Reading Terminal Market for a nice dinner, but knew it had closed at 6 pm. We knew that Chinatown was just next door, and had only a few restaurants in mind from TripAdvisor(although they seemed to be spread across chinatown), so that is where we headed. It was very dark. Mostly 20-somethings were strolling about, heading to trendy restaurant/bars, dressed very nicely. We were wearing our casual clothes, and were looking for someplace down-to-earth and family-friendly. Well, we had one restaurant in mind, Dim Sum Garden, which was highly rated on this site and was fairly easy to find. When we arrived, it was 9:30 pm and the restaurant was full. When we asked for a table, the waitress pointed at a line of about 10-15 people on the right side of the restaurant. We were in line for about a minute, when we concluded that by the time we got a table, we wouldn't have time to eat (10:30 pm closing). Kind of disappointed that they didn't just tell us our chances to eat were slim. We left the restaurant and weren't sure where else to go - we were all grumpy and tired of walking! We looked at this restaurant, which was just next door, and it seemed to fit the bill - family-friendly, unpretentious, and best of all - with just the right amount of free tables (too many free tables = probably not a great restaurant). Service was friendly enough, prices were decent and about 5 minutes after we ordered, wow - our food came out. I was initially worried about the restaurant also closing at 10:30 pm, but that fear went away the moment the food arrived. We were so tired after such a long day that the large bowls of hand-made noodles, hot soup, dumplings, spring rolls and chile sauce were spot on perfect. Everything tasted good, awesome comfort food.

Hearty Meals

By William P |

If you are looking for a hearty and tasty meal Nan Zhou will fit the bill. Our party of 6 was more than satisfied with the choices and the quality of the food. 3 of us had various soups with hand drawn as opposed to shaved noodles. The broth was good and the noodles were great. A wide variety of spice options are available to doctor your meal including soy, sriracha and hot chili oil. The mango smoothie was also a big hit. We tried the brittle turnip appetizer and it was not brittle but cold sliced turnip and with a nice kick. We did find the cold sesame noodles not so much to our liking. Perhaps we were expecting something with peanuts as well as sesame oil...that appears to have been a different choice. Overall it was a good time and reasonably priced with portions that met our appetites. Another review noted that it was crowded loud and hectic. All signs to us that lots of folks liked the menu. Be advised though that this is not the place for quiet conversation!

I still dream of eating the noodles

By Eunice M |

O.M.G. I wished I could travel back in time and make up for all those years of not eating these hand-shaved noodles. We found out about this place after walking past it during a trip to Philly. We decided to dropped by during a different (and more recent) trip to Philly. Hubby ordered the hand-drawn noodle soup with roasted duck and I ordered the hand-shaved noodle stir-fry with beef. The soup was flavorful (strong five spice aroma) and the hand-drawn noodles were springy and made the whole experience great. Then the hand-shaved noodles arrived. It blew all other noodle dishes I ever had out of the water into outer space and beyond. The uneven thickness of the noodles made it delightfully chewy and able to soak up all the beefy, salty, umami, delectable flavor that was in that stir-fry. We inhaled that dish and ordered another. Of note, the first order came with thicker noodles and the second order came with thinner noodles (these are hand shaven after all), so the second dish was not as chewy (which is sad), but still delicious. We seriously thought of getting two more orders to go, but decided not to be gluttons. The noodles cost $9.00 each, which is a really good deal. We arrived at 4:45 pm and got the last table by the entrance. There was an endless stream of people after that, so, definitely plan for an odd hour dinner. Also, do yourself a favor and use the chili oil for the soup and Sriracha for the stir-fry. The waitresses were all business, so you will be served efficiently, but don't expect hugs and kisses. FYI, if you're deciding between Lan Zhou or Nan Zhou: We walked past Lan Zhou after our meal and it was not as crowded. Considering people are lining up for Nan Zhou and there were empty tables in Lan Zhou, we assumed Nan Zhou is the better of the two. Use the street parking spots away from Chinatown because it gets very, very crowded and trafficky in Chinatown. Cash only. BOYB. We highly recommend this place and we plan to be back... this weekend.

Great noodles

By Dina N |

We went to Chinatown and looked up where to eat and this place seemed highly recommended. I ordered the chicken and noodles (not sure what it was called) and was happy with mine. The noodles were SUPER long and tender...just delicious. However, my mom ordered the chicken friend rice and the lady asked what kind of rice and we looked confused and said the friend rice. Then, she said she knew, but asked what kind. So my mom said white and she walked away looking confused, so we knew something wasn't going to be right. She got steamed white rice with stir fried chicken and veggies mixed into the steamed rice. She didn't care and ate it anyway, but it's just not what she expected or wanted. The point of my lesson: If you go to a noodle house, order a noodle dish! It was tasty.

Good Hand Drawn Noodles for Cold Winter day

By Sandy J |

Love hand drawn noodles so this place definitely did a good job! It was the first Chinese restaurant I went to in the Philly Chinatown and it didn't disappoint! I prefer the flat noodles than round long skinny noodles. The beef noodles were pretty good. I love hand drawn noodles for their chewiness and texture. This is a good place to go to on a cold Winter day as it keeps you warm for the rest of your walk around Chinatown. I recommend the duck noodles if you're more adventurous! The broth is hearty and keeps you warm! Good appetizer starter is starting with the char siu or roast pork. Pot stickers or dumplins are also a good starter! Warm tea or warm water is pretty good to go with the dishes. The value is very food for the food proportions so if you're looking for a big yummy meal for small budget this really is a good place to go for a cold night!

Where’s the Beef?

By creativecrew |

Ordered brisket noodle soup and received a bowl of delicious broth, tender noodles and fat/gristle that was somehow mistaken as beef brisket. The duck noodle soup was filled with bones and the duck was still refrigerator cold when served in the warm broth. The place was definitely authentic but overall would not return.

Yummy high quality noodles that does not break your bank!

By sun traveller |

Wow. Okay, this isn't fine dining, but there are plenty of restaurants that could learn from this place -- such as how to actually cook good food!! If you want to best experience in Chinese hand-made noodles and gyoza (dumplings), then do not go past this place.

Fast, delicious, cheap

By Freebeer12 |

had the fried chicken curry dumplings and the ox tail soup with hand drawn noodles. The dumplings were good, but really could use more curry punch. The filling seemed tired. The soup, on the other hand, was fantastic. The broth, the noodles, the vegetables, and the bits of gelatinous ox tail were great! Nan Zhou is great for a fast, delicious, and cheap meal.

Sooo worth the noodles

By Sunrize119 |

Stopped in for dinner and can't begin to explain the majesty that is the duck noodle soup. There are a ton of noodles in a flavorful broth, chunks of duck and it's great. Got a veggie stir fried noodles, curry dumplings, and chicken soup too. The noodles are great, hearty and plentiful. A bowl is like 6.50, an the service is pretty good too. We're definitely going back.

Super-delicious and affordable hand pulled noodles!

By E S |

Went for lunch and had the roast pork stir fried hand drawn noodles. They were so delicious! They also have shaved noodles, which I plan to get next time I visit. Please note that this establishment is very affordable but cash only (there was a small ATM in the lobby).

Wonderful food!

By doupnikka |

We read that this a great restaurant so we had to try while being on Phildelphia. We ordered the bokchoy, potatoes, dim sum and egg and vegetable soup. Everything was totally awesome. Our daughter had never eaten the potatoes and she loved them. The soup comes out in a huge bowl. I asked the waitress for some smaller bowls so I could share. She also gave us a scissors so that we could cut the noodles. We would definitely go here again.

delicious!

By Debbie W |

Everything was yummy & very fresh. LOVED by ALL! Will return soon! Already shared to friends and family.

MUST TRY

By TousPourUn |

The noodles here remind me of my childhood. Delicious. Especially the peanut butter sauce one. YUM. The Dan Dan Noodles didn't have enough meat for my liking. Servers are a little surly - probably because they are understaffed

Authentic, delicious, and inexpensive

By ccMD2015 |

My family have been here numerous times and whenever I am in Philly for a meeting, I bring colleagues with me. WE LOVE THIS PLACE. The noodle soups never disappointed. We love the cold plates of beef tendon, pig ears, and sliced beef to add more texture and spices to our dinner. This is what I call an eating establishment, not a restaurant. The place is clean, well managed, and for the low price, it's a necessity to move people in and out efficiently. Please don't come here to have delicious, artfully prepared, authentic Chinese food with quality ingredients for <10 dollars and expect to be pampered and linger for hours as you would at places that charge far more for few bites of food and few drops of sauces. The low price also means you can try a lot of different things. Go with the right expectation, be adventurous, bring a Chinese friend as your guide, if needed, and I promise you that you will have a great meal for a shockingly low price.

Love the hand drawn noodles!

By Susan S |

We like to stop in especially on cold days for a nice big bowl of noodle soup or stir fried noodles. Tasty. Warms the soul. Not expensive either. I usually go with a group of 4 and it costs $30 something. The atmosphere is old and could really use an update. Cash only!

Yummy & Cheap!

By HipNJMom |

I love this place. Everything is delicious especially their hand drawn noodles (have tried the brisket sliced noodles, egg and noodle soup, sesame noodles). There's no ambiance, its super casual with no frills and inexpensive. Go early for dinner to avoid the wait to get in.

Lots of Yummy Noodles

By Halems |

They say that they really do toss the noodles in the back, but you can't see it. In any case, the food was excellent and the noodles fresh and tender. We started by looking for a place near our hotel and Nan Zhou was only a couple of blocks down Race St. Since it was a cold and wet night we didn't want to walk too far. Noodles in hot soup sounded perfect for a dreary night. We started with a plate of steamed dumplings. I'm used to a slightly spicier filling, but these were excellent when I added a bit of the hot pepper sauce. The bowl of noodles in broth with seafood fit the bill for a cold night. Again, for my taste I added the peppers, but the quality of all the ingredients was excellent. Incidentally, the whole meal was very inexpensive.

Noodles!

By hoppernc |

We are there for lunch, and had to have the hand drawn noodles. I had the veggies and noodles, my husband had the steak and noodles, and my daughters had the noodles with peanut sauce. We also ordered the chicken curry dumplings. It was a busy restaurant and we had a double stroller, so we took the food back to our hotel. It was only 10 minutes from ordering to walking out the door. The prior reviews were correct, the food was excellent. Bring cash, they do jot accept credit cards.

This is the best hand drawn noodle shop around.

By Lee R |

After eating here for many years, we stopped back recently and yet again were not disappointed! My wife dreams of hand drawn noodles and having tried the other choices in the area she swears Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House is the best! Their new location is way bigger and cleaner than before and the food is just as good. I was concerned that there would not be many vegetarian options but happily there were plenty! This time I had the stir fried shaved noodles and my wife had the braised ox spare ribs noodle soup and both were great! This restaurant is famous for it's hand drawn noodles, so stick to those items on the menu! We will definitely be going back!

New favorite Chinese Food place

By jcg13x |

I've been craving some food like this for over a month and I finally had it a few weeks ago. I went with my parents and my wife and we were not disappointed! I had a Sliced Beef Noodle Soup and a Beef Fried Rice. My wife and mom shared Stir Fried Noodles and my dad had the Ox tail soup and Chicken Fried Rice. I only had a similar soup at a Vietnamese place before and this soup was better! It was very delicious!!! The fried rice was good, it tasted fresh and some of the best Chinese Rice I've had. Same with the Fried Noodles. The food was amazing and the prices are great! My only complaint is that they don't take credit card so I had to use the ATM. I will definitely be coming back to this place

Noodles for Everyone

By ClarkCast360 |

Each member of the family got a different dish. Everyone of them was very tasty. Service was quick and the menu was reasonably priced.

Not paying for the ambiance

By Richard C |

If you want fresh food, this is the place. Very busy but waited on very promptly. Reminded you of a cafeteria but after being on the road all day, I didn't need any fluff. Located a block or so from the Convention center. Great stuff, cheap.

Superb sliced beef soup

By Sailor Shay |

I happened to walk in at a time when there were open seats. Having heard the place is very busy, and wanting to get back out to walk Chinatown without delay, I ordered quickly. Simply asked the waitress "what is the best soup today?" She told me the sliced beef and the beef brisket. I asked which she preferred, she said the former, so I told her I would like that. It was literally the best bowl of soup I ever had! Laden with fresh noodles, slices of the tenderest beef, chopped cilantro, bits of pickled peppers, garlic cloves cooked to buttery softness, and more. Scrumptious to the last spoonful. Atmosphere is airy, busy, but pleasant. The staff is efficient and friendly. CASH ONLY!

Drawn in by the hype, but ok

By jaz79h |

I’ve had hand drawn noodles in China and Chicago—figured we’d try here. Good, but not the same. We got the noodles with pork soy sauce (amazingly long, hard to share, surprisingly symmetrical for authentic hand drawn, good flavor, arrived a little cold), pork dumplings (quite good actually), and mah fu tofu (meh). Great prices. Good service. CASH ONLY. Not bad, but I’d probably go for a dim sum or soup dumpling place the next time.

Very Flavorful and Clean

By Jo Jo |

$ Cash Only $ there is an ATM in the store. My mom is a pretty picky lady when it comes to eating out but she really enjoyed this place! Marinated Intestine was very flavorful. Cut into nice size pieces for snacking while you wait for your other courses. Beef Stir Fry with shaved noodles was really good. The noodles and beef were flavorful and really had in Cantonese what we would say 'wok hey' - which means I believe translates to they used big fire to cook it (lol someone help me out!) My mom really enjoyed the House Special hand drawn noodle soup. There was so much noodles that she couldn't finish because she really enjoyed the soup and drank most of it. My mom and aunt were also impressed at how clean everything including the bathroom was.

Great unique taste

By Quantummottle |

Like all Chinatowns, the Philly one is so much fun to walk around and try different eateries. This place of course was recommended to us by many Philly natives and did not disappoint. There was a lot of variety and the the taste was a little different fro the usual schezwan and Cantonese that we are used to but certainly very good. Would come back for sure.

Excellent food. Great noodles. Great dumplings.

By Aidan G |

Everyone in my party had hand drawn noodles prepared a different way. They were all spectacular. I had the noodles in broth with muscles, clams, shrimp, scallops, and crab stick. The broth needed a little heat, but there was chili oil on the table, so that was easy. The noodles were perfect. The dumplings, which we ordered pan fried as an appetizer, arrived after our soups/noodles. This wasn't optimal, but I think was indicative of the level of service the restaurant provides. Indeed, the only reason I couldn't give the restaurant 5 stars was because the service was rushed, indifferent, and it seemed like their objective was to get us out of the restaurant, rather than give us a pleasant dining experience. This may be cultural, but it is still a drawback.

Fast and fairly inexpensive but not a special taste

By Karin P |

While it was fast and the prices reasonable, not sure I would return as the food tastes like many other restaurants in town. Service was quick and cash only- beware.

Casual noodles place

By KNT5 |

Casual Chinese place, simple food & fast service with cash only Prepare for long wait Shanghai dumplings (chicken, pork or crab) - Great flavor Hand made noodles soup - Chewy, love the textures Hand made shaved noodles soup or stir fried - Perfect seasoning Other dishes just mediocre

Good food, good value

By Heather B |

A no frills place, bustling with licals and tourists alike. Delicious noodle dishes and soups. Wait staff was friendly and good-natured, indulging our need for forks vs chopsticks with a smile. It's cash only (as many places in Chinatown are) but don't let that deter you or you'l miss some great noodles!

Big portions, definitely different Chinese food

By Flygurl1996 |

This place was packed. The wait was not long though. And the staff was efficient. We shared the popular brisket noodle soup. And got two of noodle dishes that would remind you of pad Thai. One seafood and one pork. Delicious! The shrimp was cooked perfectly! We shared the scallion pancake (best I have ever had but small might want two), pork and scallion dumpling and the curry chicken dumpling. Tried one steamed and one fried. Loved them both ways. The table preferred the steamed. The staff brought extra bowls and plates for us to share. We were full but not stuffed and walked out with a $45 bill for 4! Wow! We will return here for sure!

Bring your appetite

By JKTraveler11 |

This bustling restaurant is authentic, noisy, pushy... and delicious. The noodle dishes are excellent and the portions are huge. If you are interested in stock Chinese.. egg rolls, moo shoo, and fortune cookies, head elsewhere. If you want an authentic experience with scrumptious noodles and broths, this is your place. Cash only.

Darn good

By Felix M |

We met some friends for an early dinner in Philadelphia today and decided to try something new SO I checked out T A and Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House came up. We were given a choice of where to sit and our waitress was immediately there to bring our menus, tea and ask if we needed any other drinks. My wife and friends are Chinese and that gets you a bit more personalized service. We ordered the Combo Trio Appetizer made up of Spicy Beef Tendon, Spicy Pig Ears and Braided Sliced Beef all on a bed of pickled grated radishes. It was delicious. We also ordered the Spicy Beef Tripe which I found good but not spicy but still good. The trips was tender and well seasoned without the typical barnyard smell of these types of food. We also ordered the cucumber and pickled vegetable appetizer and the pan fried dumplings and these were surprisingly good. For dinner we ordered three hand drawn noodle soup bowl two of which were spicy. The broth was delectably beefy with tender chunks and slices of beef, bright green vegetables that were cooked to perfection and soft but chewy noodles that were good but seemed to perfect to be hand drawn. My other friend ordered a Stir Fry Noodle with Vegetables and Chicken that were deemed delicious and with a well made sauce and noodles that decidedly seemed hand drawn All in all an excellent dinner in a quiet, well lit and well staffed restaurant that I will not only be coming back to but will.also highly recommend others try. If you are not into the Weird appetizers stick to the dumplings, spring rolls and fried stuffed buns and all of the noodle dishes, hence the name of the restaurant and you will not be disappointed. It is on the inexpensive side without sacrificing quality, presentation, service or portion size Well done and continued success. (THIS RESTAURANT IS CASH ONLY SO BE WARNED. THERE IS AN ATM MACHINE JUST A YOU ENTER THE VESTIBULE OF THE RESTAURANT)

Good food, Good price

Nan Zhou is not fancy the the food is excellent. The lamb noodles (soup) were excellent. As good or better than any I ever had in China. The scallion pancakes were addictive and the meat and chive dumplings were delicious! Two orders of noodles, lamb and veggie with fried egg, scallion pancake, order of dumplings came to $21.00. The quantity was more than enough for two. The place is on Race Street not far from the Convention Center. Well definitely go back.

Delicious New Years Day Lunch

By Alberto T |

Me and my partner were in Philadelphia for New Years Eve and were planning on find a place to eat at Reading Terminal Market, only to find it was closed. So, given that Chinatown is very close, we figured we could find somewhere that was open and we ended up at Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House. It was pretty packed and we had to wait 10 minutes or so for a table for two to open up. Eventually, we were seated and we placed our orders. I had the duck noodle soup, which was hearty, flavorful and really hit the spot, as I was coming down with a bit of a cold I wanted some Chinese watercress, but they were out of that, so I got the snow pea leaves instead and they were delicious. As appetizers, we brittle turnip and shredded kelp, both of which had an unexpected, but delicious taste. Although it was unplanned, I'm very glad we happened upon this spot.

Great experience

By FrankandJenn |

Food was very good. Atmosphere was very casual. It appears it can get very busy. The location is close to the convention center and reading terminal market. It is worth stopping by for a quick bite of you are in the area. This will definitely challenge your chop stick skills.

The best of China Town

By Myroslav |

Every time when we couldn't find a new restaurant we went to this amazing place. The food is very tasty and prices are very good. Staff is very friendly.

hectic setting; delicious and inexpensive

By Daniel O |

Went on a Saturday for lunch. No surprise, but it was loud, crowded, and hectic. We had to share our table with other diners. The servers were polite, but rushed due to the crowd. Service was fast, and the food was delicious. My wife and I each got a noodle soup and appetizers, and the meal was less then $25. It was very vegetarian friendly as well.

Food is OK......

By Bin Z |

Food is OK, but you know, the noodle is not Nan Zhou or Lanzhou style, not even close. But totally understandable for making noodle for the customer who not come from Lanzhou. The service not good, only ask what you need and take long time to responds. And also......Cash only......

Best noodles in Chinatown

By Double "Ollie" Winner |

These noodles are made fresh by hand for every dish and they're awesome! The soups here are amazing and authentic. This is one of a trio of fantastic Chinese restaurants next to each other on Race St.

Super hearty broth

By BHUANG69 |

I had bad Nan Zhou noodle before. The broth was too thin and I was expecting layers and layers of flavor. This place has accomplished that. I ordered the traditional Nan Zhou noodle with beef and it matches exactly what I expected. I also like the combo appetizer Gong Chai (a type of pickled vegetable) with sea weed shreds. So good. I will be back.

Really really good noodles...yum

By bugdoc6013 |

Had an excellent dinner with friends in this little unassuming restaurant. A typical Chinese restaurant that one might find in Flushing, Queens, Chinatown NYC as far as look and feel but the soup noodles were excellent and the sliced beef brisket was tasty and tender and for only $8 - $9. A really great meal at very decent prices.

Yum!

By TravlinStacey |

Cold, night calls for steaming bowls of hand drawn noodles! One bowl of shrimp noodle soup, beef brisket with rice noodles, beef stir fry, roast pork fried rice, bbq chicken wings and diced cucumber appetizer. Everything was fresh, hot, absolutely delicious! Don't miss this shop!

Great food and inexpensive

By Steve C |

This noodle house is fabulous. Every dish was simply outstanding and the service was pretty nice as well as compared to Manhattan, which is generally rushed and somewhat obnoxious. The shaved noodle are thicker compared to the hand-drawn noodles, which are a spaghetti-like consistency. This makes great leftovers as well. Parking can be somewhat expensive around Chinatown though, but the food is very cheap. And probably the best part on our visit was no wait on a Saturday at 6 PM.

Noodles!!!

By Ann P |

Nan Zhou is easily the best place in Chinatown. One of the soups is the way to go. Packed nicely for take out with the noodle separate so they don't get soggy. Love this place - glad we can get noodle soup to go!!

Great food, great price, but Cash only please

By likecomfort_10 |

This was our go to spot. We had 2 meals here, Our first meal when we got to Philly and our last meal before we left. Both times were good, first time there we had to wait for a table, it was jam-packed, much better the 2nd time cause we got there early. We got a variety of noodle dishes, from stir fried to noodle soup, fried dumplings were good also. Service was quick and efficient.

Tasty food. Good value

By JENNIFER T |

Went for dinner on the Thursday night. Was busy but not crazy also seems to do a lot of take out service. We both had Pork with Fresh Hand Drawn Noodles ($10.50. Very large service and very tasty. Pork was tender although a bit chewy. Noodle were excellent. We had had the spring rolls. There where very crispy but a bit small. Service was very good. Everything was clean and dinner was in a nice quite setting. Would be good if they could re-route the take out. All the folks coming in for takeout walk past all the dinners up to the back counter. Not really an issue but would be a better experience without all those folks passing by.

Good food, Standard high-volume Chinese restaurant

By jbcampo |

We found this restaurant in Philly's Chinatown during a one-night stay over Thanksgiving time. My wife is Taiwanese and was craving hand-made noodles. This place fit the bill. It was Friday night, and the place was pretty full. We only waited a few minutes before being seated. We got served right away. We all ordered noodles, mine with Pork Chops, my wife has beef. Service was fast. Noodles were good, the broth was good, but a little bit salty. We think they used MSG and we forgot to ask for no MSG. The interior design is nothing special, pictures of the Eiffel tower I think, and NYC. Like most of these types of Chinese restaurants, the food is what counts, not the decor. Price was like 6-7$ per bowl, so very good. All told, this was a good choice that I recommend you try.

Hand drawn noodles

By Anna H |

Fantastic house made noodles, presented in a variety of styles and dishes. Choose your protein and accompaniment, they are bound to have it. Everything was well prepared and a bargain and twice the price. Cash only, but an authentic Chinese food experience.

Delicious!

By Cristy |

Delicious! Very friendly! I got the noodle soup they recommended and the pork dumplings. Also very reasonable priced. They don’t have an alcohol license but I didn’t mind.

a mixed bag

By ChrisY9673AG |

In order to avoid a packed restaurant and a wait on a beautiful Saturday in October, our party of 3 decided on a mid-afternoon, 3:30PM, visit. We were seated right away and the service was prompt to place our order. We ordered spring rolls (very good-light and crisp) fried pork and chive dumplings (quite good) and the fried curried dumplings (also very good). We also ordered two bowls of the beef brisket noodle soup and an order of the beef stir fried noodles. Sadly, the noodle soup was a bit of a disappointment. The broth was light and tasty, but the fresh herbs were mostly stems and the beef brisket was literally nothing but large pieces of fat. There was almost no discernible meat in either of the two bowls. Oh how we wish we'd all ordered a fried noodle dish as the order of fried noodles was quite good. At the end of our meal, we had to track down someone to bring us a bill, despite the fact that the restaurant was not crowded. Maybe this is one of those places where the hustle and bustle of busyness actually prompts quicker service. Overall a decent experience but would probably try another establishment the next time we are in Chinatown.

Hand Drawn Noodles!

By TravelTY90 |

Specifically came here to have their hand drawn noodles, and that is exactly what I ordered. The food was very delicious and had a lot of flavor. Their service is pretty quick too.

Refined pulled noodles

By marcopoloulisse |

The place itself is not fancy but the pulled noodles were as good as in China. A wide variety of condiments and toppings is offered. Unfortunately you can't see the noodle chef in action close up; it would be some added fun. Anyway, no complaints.

The food was decent, and a very good value for the price

By kenjs2017 |

Chinatown isn't the greatest neighborhood in Philly, but Nan Zhou is a great place for a large group, assuming you can get into the busy place. The service is fast and efficient, and so is the food. I've had better, I've had a lot worse. The portions are quite large, and the dinners are very reasonably priced. It's great for socializing, and the food is enjoyable enough.

Delicious noodles!

By wevisitplaces |

I didn’t know noodles could be this delicious. We had a wide variety of dishes and they were all incredible. They only take cash or venmo but they have an ATM machine there, just FYI. It’s a great place with great food

Not so fresh

By R D |

We ordered the pan fried roast pork noodle dish. No hot tea or noodles to snack on while you wait. The noodles and flavor were AWESOME..but then we each got past the top layer to find a blob of noodles that were clearly made some time earlier in the day. Ten bucks for the plate of noodles and beef with great flavor.

Still the best soup

By Sailor Shay |

My recent visit confirms what I discovered last summer: this is the best bowl of soup. Again I enjoyed the sliced beef soup, with its delicate fans of meat, firm vegetables, tender noodles, and perfectly seasoned broth. This time I also ordered the coconut curry chicken dumplings, steamed, and was quite pleased with their quality and flavor. The neighborhood is a delight of culture, with many shops and street vendors...sights, sounds, and scents to take in. Make time to walk it. I plan to visit again next time I am in Philly.

Excellent Noodle Shop!

By Mark D |

Clean and fresh, our experience was better than expected. The wait staff was excellent, the restaurant very clean. My noodle bowl was full to the brim. I'm eager to go back!

Fabulous - CASH ONLY

By 612Traveller |

Any chance I get I come here to eat. There is very very limited street parking but there is a garage close to the resturant. The friend rice is fabulous and I usually order this to go home as it reheats well. At the restaurant it is all about the noodles! Pulled noodles remind me of our trip to China and are the best local noodles around.

Great hand drawn noodles!

By Karen M |

Cash only. The shumai was awesome. The house special hand drawn noodle soup is great. We also had the coconut curry dumplings, which I would say were OK to good. That’s all we had. Definitely recommend!

Authentic & Delish

By Bec515 |

Try the shaved noodles for thickness. We had 4 diners for a late lunch. 1 had soup (with chicken), the other 3 had stir-fried shaved noodles, 2 with chicken, 1 with shrimp. The chicken was tender and fresh, the shrimp cooked to perfection. The noodles were flavorful. Each table has a choice of condiments - try a little of each until you find your groove. Stay away from the smoothies - the restaurant does not make them fresh, but that's OK! Have a pot of hot tea with your meal instead.

Seafood stir fry was wonderful

By SND139 |

the drawn noodles are plentiful and there was a nice amount of fish in the stir fry. Brown sauce had a little bit which was wonderful. The shrimp soup was hot and delicious as well. The spring rolls were crispy but not overly greasy.

Genuine Article in Downtown Philly

By angkor123 |

If you're looking for a leisurely Chinese fine dining experience in which doe-eyed servers graciously pour your tea for you and the table settings are as much a feast for the eye as the food is for the stomach -- then this isn't your place. But if you're in for the genuine article, centering on home-made noodles, then this is it. Nan Zhou is a place to eat and go. The atmosphere is utilitarian, the service is rushed and noise from kitchen machinery and the patrons does not encourage relaxation. If you can deal with that, then enjoy the many interesting menu offerings, from spicy pig ears to oxtail soup. And, of course, the mainstay here is the noodles, made on the premises by no-nonsense noodle elves in the rear. Our dumplings had that extra-sensorial satisfaction from being home-made. And our pork and oxtail soups were filling as well as tasty. Our chicken with dry noodle dish was equally satisfying. If you travel in China to the joints where real people eat, you'll encounter many other Nan Zhou's. That Philly has one in its very own Chinatown is a true asset.

Awful service, won't go back!

By AlePad2013 |

Brown people, beware-- this is a racist space! We ordered a dish after asking if it was spicy-- we were told, "no it is not too spicy, it is very moderate". We are not spice haters, but my sister was sick and wanted some hot, nourishing food that wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. When the dish arrived it was too spicy for her, and I tried it and found it to be quite spicy for my healthy tongue as well-- so we first asked if they could make it less spicy in some way-- to which the server very rudely replied that this was a spicy dish, and "what do you expect me to do, wash the tofu and bring it back?". So I asked if we could return the dish, adding that I didn't mind paying for it-- as she started being even more rude and acting as though we were just trying to get free food. She went back, saying she would check with the manager and then came back and said they could take off a few dollars at most, so I said again that I would be paying for the dish (I was quite annoyed at this point, especially as she went back and a group of servers and the manager started to visibly point to us and talk about us in what seemed to be very rude and insulting body language). My sister had already ordered another soup and I waited while she ate it, but it was clear that we were not wanted there-- in fact, another server just came over, and reach across me without saying anything and started stocking spoons on our table. Here's the BEST PART: As soon as my caucasian partner arrived, their attitude changed considerably, and they took off the cost of the tofu from the final bill (of the two dishes and an appetizer we had ordered while waiting for my partner to join us). I won't be going back to this racist place, and I can't recommend it in good conscience to anyone else! It is not just the food that makes a restaurant excellent, the ambience and the service matter: and this is not a lesson that the servers or the management seem to have learned in all their years in the restaurant business.

Yummy!

By Owee N |

Great noodles! Tried noodle soup 🍜 and stir fry noodles 🍝 Love them both! Also tried their dumplings 🥟 - Hungry Fox 🦊

Good and cheap

By Tevel R |

We got out food in about 3-4 minutes, it was good soup, and cost around 7.50$. Menu seemed to have good variety and service was fast and good.

Delicious and authentic!

By Pinky777 |

This restaurant was recommended to us -- we were told to order the scallion pancake ad an appetizer. Not knowing what that was, we ordered it and it was delicious. So were our meals -- of course we ordered the hand drawn noodles. Best Chinese we've ever had.

Must try when in Philadelphia.

By Nanners83 |

The most delicious noodles on the earth! Very tasty hand drawn noodle soup!! Very friendly service and cute restaurant.

Great Quick & Cheap Chinese

By D K |

Simple and good, this is a terriffic place. Sauce for the scallion pancake was sweet, which isn't my taste, but the hand-shaved noodles were perfect. Nan Zhou was exactly what I hoped it would be. Portion sizes are large and easily shareable.

Good Food and Price!

By joanne327 |

Portions are sizeable enough for two!! Waitress although somewhat harried were accommodating when asking questions about certain dishes. Food comes quickly and they are quite efficient. Try noodle soup and scallion pancakes!!Didn't find them to be racist at all?? Think that maybe there was a communication error as what is spicy or hot to one person, may not be to another??

Realized my noodle fantasy...

By kbfoster1 |

Left a show at the Troc a couple blocks away from this Chinatown joint. We actually had parked right in front of it before the show. For the uninformed, which I was... You pay the machined meter on the sidewalk according to the number of the spot you are parked in, then put the ticket visibly on the dash. Oops. And here I thought, "hey, free parking in Philly!?! Wow!". Nope. However, the drunken noodles in this place were so effin good it washed those parking ticket blues right out of our systems. And they were open late, double-bonus. Was so good that I made it a pitstop 2 weeks later when I took my daughter to a show at Festival Pier at Penn's Landing. Easy in, easy out, full belly o' awesome homemade Asian noodles. Will return again (and again).

Good dumplings - OK soup

By foodie_bob |

I tried this place and I wasn't sure if I should have the noodle soup or stir fried noodles. I ended up having the noodle soup and wish I had the stir fried noodles instead. I opted for the roast pork noodle soup and specifically asked for no cilantro and shaved noodles. Unfortunately it came with the cilantro and hand drawn noodles. Oh well. As others have previously mentioned, there were lots of noodles in the soup but no too much meat. Additionally, the first few bites of pork were cold (as there weren't in the soup for long enough to warm up). That's why the soup probably wasn't too hot. I also tried an order of their steamed pork and chive dumplings & those happened to be very good. They have a stack of napkins, hot oil, soy sauce and vinegar on the table with small bowls which is a nice touch. This place ok inside and they get a pretty good crowd too. It's cash only likes some others in the area so be prepared.

Best spicy pork ears we have ever had

By David F |

We tried the spicy pork ears -- best we have ever had, and we have tried them in many places (my wife is Taiwanese -- she especially likes these due to their thinness of cut and crispiness -- not fatty as some are); also tried the excellent cold spicy noodles (good even the next day -- we bought takeout to bring with us on a long train ride). Flavors are not too spicy and tasty; pickled vegetable and peanut (in the noodles) are very good. We would definitely eat here again next time we visit Philly, and I would live in Chinatown near this restaurant if I settled in this city -- no kidding. Two happy visitors from NC.

Post Super Bowl parade grub that hit the spot

By T J |

We went after the Super Bowl parade starving and in search of scallion pancakes around 4pm. We were seated, given a recommendation from the folks next to us, placed our order and eating within 10 minutes of arriving. The food was just what we needed to warm up and face the challenge of getting back home.

Wonderfully authentic noodles

By Gregory M |

If you enjoy very authentic Asian cooking, then you will not be disappointed. The noodles are delicious and the soup broth has a rich flavor. Beef was perfectly cooked with just a hint of seasoning. A perfect warm meal on a cold winter day.

Delicious, fresh, good portions and reasonably priced...

By Venis3 |

Went for a late night bite and was not disappointed. Dumplings are fresh, stuffed and delicious. Our noodle/stir fry dishes had ample amounts of vegetables and meat -- we could not finish everything. Place was packed with young people sharing a few laughs and enjoying each others company. Staff was polite and there when you needed them. Just an FYI, its cash only so be prepared.

Surprisingly great food in a small, local restaurant!

By drlynnrose |

I was in Philly for a conference and had such good for here that my colleagues and I ate here twice in four days! This is a small, very busy restaurant with quick service and delicious food. I recommend a side dish of freshly sauteed spinach with garlic... the portion size is enough for 4 people easily and the cost in amazingly inexpensive. Any of the stir fry noodle dishes were outstanding as was the noodle soups. Everything we ordered was really exceptional.

Try somewhere else on the block

By Piero C |

Very full, but quickly seated and served, always to be appreciated in a busy place like this. The noodles are freshly made and are best ordered in soup. Avoid the sliced beef unless you are fond of shoe leather, and do not order the insipid fried noodles. A decent meal at a decent price, but nothing remarkable about the taste, quite similar to food court Chinese in the mall.

So good...

By rogerdc78 |

I lament that Washington DC doesn't have Chinese places like Nan Zhou. I'm in Philadelphia regularly for work and try to visit Nan Zhou whenever I get the chance. The hand drawn noodles seem better than the shaved noodles. I usually get the beef noodle soup or the pork chop noodle soup. Service is fast.

Hand Drawn Noodle is worth a stop everytime I'm in town!

By jvmoney |

If you've never tried hand drawn noodle, this is the place to visit. It has fresh hand drawn noodles, in a piping hot soup bowl with toppings of your choosing. I personally prefer the seafood option, but have heard good things on all of them. If you're not a soup person, they also offer dishes where the noodles are stir friend! Excellent meal at a moderate price is always a good combination!

The best place!!

By Josh D |

I reviewed this place in December 2015 when I was a little tiny about to gross my family out with dirty thoughts 7th grader!! I was a noodle soup enjoyer back then but now I’m a noodle soup god!! I legally go to Temple University which is a subway stop from city hall so I go here when the spirit lifts me!! I went here tonight to celebrate finishing my first year of Temple (thank you for applauding me even though you didn’t)!! I get the roast pork noodle soup and the honeydew smoothie every time and it fills my soul with happiness and comfort!! The broth is hot so that is why I get an icy drink!! It evens the hot soup out good!! The roast pork is the best and the noodles are very good!! The service is very good and the noodle soup came less than 5-10 minutes after I ordered it!!

Delicious noodles; bring cash

By DVSTraveler |

We really enjoyed our meals here, very delicious. The broth was perfect along with the noodles. I got the seafood soup and my fiancé got tripe. We both really enjoyed our meals. The atmosphere is very open so don’t expect an intimate dining area. We sat pretty close to other customers, which was fine. The price was right and the service was great. Make sure you bring cash. They do have an ATM machine in the restaurant in case you forget to bring some along. I am not sure if this is specific to Chinatown in Philadelphia, but we visited another restaurant in the area that took cash only. I would say that it’s a safe bet to bring cash if you visit Chinatown.

A little bland

By Galu |

Authentic Chinese restaurant serving a variety of Chinese cuisine. The service is excellent and the place is large and can accommodate relatively large groups. At the same time, very noisy. Unfortunately, the portions of the rice and noodles were tasteless and lacked a more dominant flavor. Also the ratio between noodles / rice and beef / chicken was not successful.

A bit better than an average Chinese restaurant in Philly

By Dmitri K |

Cash only. Quick and VERY unobtrusive service :) Good noodles. Otherwise pretty unremarkable. I would recommend getting something basic with their noodles. More complex dishes are not well made, drenched in sauce and "improved" by their exaggerated size. Tea was horrendous. Not much better than the surrounding places.

Quick and Delicious

By Mak684 |

It's quick, it's delicious, and it's cheap. Just make sure to bring cash. Take the time to order a few small dishes so you get a chance to try as many items as possible with a few friends.

16 Years of Good Meals

By Connie M |

We have been eating here since it opened at the old location in 2003. We were chatting with the owner tonight and the little girl we watched practicing her violin is now a senior in college! Yikes! Anyway, the menu has grown over the years and there a now a wide variety of foods- fried rice, soups, noodle platters- definitely something for everyone. Over the years we have been here with visitors to Philadelphia, family, work groups, just the two of us and we have never had a bad meal. The owners are from a part of China that grows wheat so the noodles are not rice noodles and are not gluten free. They have a number of vegetarian options on the menu. It can get crowded after 6:30-7PM so we go earlier to avoid the dinner lines. They are open for lunch too with the same menu. A Chinese friend told us to order the shaved noodles instead of the hand-drawn noodles because they hold the sauce better so after years of thoroughly enjoying the hand-drawn, we switched. And our friend was correct! The dumpling appetizers are delicious- we prefer the chicken curry or satay beef ones. They offer 5 different kinds and we have suggested they offer a "combo" platter with 2 of each kind but it hasn't happened yet. The marinated sliced beef appetizer is also excellent. The noodles with peanut sauce is truly a bargain- fills you up for a very low price. My husband loves the fishball soup and the noodles with pork soy sauce. I have had a lot of different entrees and enjoyed them all. They don't offer any desserts but on a hot day we will get one of their fruit smoothies as a dessert. A fun place with good food.

Great Noodle House

By WellTraveled3 |

Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House serves very good hand-drawn noodles in a no-frills but clean, casual atmosphere with helpful and efficient service. I had the chicken soup with the hand drawn noodles which was very tasty and well prepared. The noodles were light and the broth had great flavor. The honey ginger tea was also, quite good. Close walking distance to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Chinatown. Frequented by many local Chinese families. Very reasonable prices and ample servings.

Great noodles fast service

By djrealone |

The noodles here are excellent. I ate the seafood noodles and the portion was large (good for sharing) and generous on the amount of seafood. The service was very fast.

It's all about the Spicy Pig Ears

By nouglytourist |

This is a noodle restaurant and, of course, I sampled a few lovely noodles dishes here but the star attraction for me was the Spicy Pig Ears. Yes, it sounds nasty but it tasted sublime. They slice those suckers super thin and then cook it in a really spicy, red oil sauce. The crunchiness of the sliced ears with the spicy sauce makes for pure taste pleasure. You will be hankering for more. Trust me. I can't wait to eat them again at this place!

Fantastic food

By Michael S |

We were walking though Chinatown, looking for great noodles, and this restaurant appeared to be very busy (a good sign). The dumplings and noodles were amazing, This is a place to go for the food, not the ambience, Service was fast and pleasant. I would recommend and the rating is, of course, based upon price and the nature of the establishment!

Bland and Room Temperature

By Travel Moniker |

First, they don’t take credit cards and don’t sell alcohol. Ouch. I had the stir dry pork and hand drawn noodles. They were bland to the point of tasteless and served at room temperature. Good thing there is Sriracha sauce on the table! Service was good but didn’t make up for the food. Another restaurant to avoid in Chinatown.

Excellent, Authentic Food

By TomOCUSA |

We had 3 of the hand drawn noodle dishes, as well as fried pork dumplings and steamed broccoli with oyster sauce. Every dish had excellent flavor. We enjoyed all of the items we ordered. This reminded us of restaurants from our visits to China. We recommend a meal here.

Tasty!

By Kristina C |

Located in Chinatown. It's very close to Reading Terminal Market and the Convention Center. We stopped in for lunch and it was exactly what we were looking for. The spicy pig ear appetizer was large enough to share with a couple people. It had a nice texture with a spicy sesame oil flavor. The hand pulled noodle soup was perfect on a cold winter day. The soup was flavorful and the portion of the noodles and the meat was generous.

Delicious and generous portions

By AnnArborMichigan |

I found this restaurant through another review site where it was highly rated. I ordered carryout and the food was ready when we walked over from our hotel. Delicious noodles and broth, although I wish they had labeled the containers! Highly recommend this!

Delicious meal in Chinatown!

By James |

While visiting Chinatown, we stopped in for lunch and were quickly seated. Excellent steamed pork buns, chicken soup with shaved noodles, and pork stir-fried hand noodles. Friendly service, delicious food, and reasonable prices (cash only, ATM on-site). Nice owner 👍👍

Fast service - cash only - food just ok

By vzescape |

Did not like that they only take cash!! This is a large restaurant. I won't give my money to people who don't claim their earnings and pay the taxes. We had to wait 20 min at 7pm to get a table for 5. The food was good. Scallion pancakes crispy. Half duck was meaty and tasty. Only had dumplings in chicken or pork. Fresh shrimp stirfry was good and shaved noodles were thick and chewy which I liked, however the next day leftover noodles were disgusting - they turned to a pasty mush. Food came out quickly after we ordered. Disappointed they ran out of boba after we ordered 5 smoothies. Not returning. So many other restaurants in the area who accept cards.

Good food in Chinatown

By ken j |

We stopped here for a meal in Chinatown. Both meals we had were with noodles, and very good. We will go here again. It was very authentic.

Peanut sauce noodles OMG!

By lobsterbacks |

Three friends tried six items and loved it all. Roast duck noodle bowl had little meat but lots of flavor. The peanut sauce stole the show! No credit cards and no booze. Reasonable prices.

yummy beef noodle soup

By Just_Nini |

great place for noodles! it's a no frill kind of place...ok service but great food. we ordered the beef noodle soup and beef brisket noodle soup. liked the chunky brisket more than the thin sliced beef. soup base was good, noodles was good...large portion also. scallion pancake was in the small side but very tasty.

unassuming place, but good food and excellent value for money

By oliverperra |

On my first night in Philly I was looking for a place closed to my hotel where I could eat before crashing in bed after a transatlantic trip. I looked at TripAdvisor and saw this place had good reviews, so I went straight to it. I was not disappointed. The place does not look much: the furniture and the lighting are basic. However, the food was very satisfying. I had a bowl of noodles in a beef sheen soup: refreshing, good and filling. Just what I needed. I also had a warm tea, which was a bit too sweet for my taste. Overall I spent about $8, which was very good value for money. The food that my table neighbours were eating also looked delicious and the comments I heard from them were very positive. It is a place with no thrills, but the do very good food at very good prices, and I couldn't ask for more.

Very Good

By AnonE-Mous |

I wanted to try this restaurant after reading about it in a Best Around the USA/Best in PA article. We tried a variety of dishes on the menu including the light & delicious scallion pancakes & the absolute best sesame noodles that we have ever tasted. (We had no idea that scallion pancakes could be anything but heavy & gut-busting! LOL!) Other dishes were good, not great. Service was indifferent. We will be back. FYI... This place is next-door to the always spectacular (but a little pricier) Dim Sum Garden.

Delicious

By Leah K |

I had heard nothing but great things about this place and I'm a huge fan of Asian food and noodles so it seemed like it would be a great meal for me. We started with the cucumbers - which were amazing. Literally the most unique flavors I've had in a long time and unlike other things I've tried; and I've eaten a lot of Asian food. We then had the dumplings which were good, but not the best I've ever had. The noodle bowls were good and the meat in them was delicious so flavorful, but not the best I've ever had. Overall great meal, good prices, but not the best I've ever had.

It’s really good!

By Min C |

Ate there twice during my 5 days in Philly! I cannot resist the hand drawn noodle, which brought me back to my days in China. The noodle is really authentic and delicious. I highly recommend the noodle with beef. The second time I went back with some friends while also liked it!

Filling Dinner

By Denny T |

Finding cheap or free parking is a pain in the city. Ended up finding parking relatively cheap a block away from this restaurant. Found this cheap Chinese place in Chinatown Philla. Walked in but be careful. First step is a dip. Not a raised floor. I didn't trip. Staff was prompt to seat me and get my order going. I ordered a water to go with the beef soup and chicken curry dumplings (special of that day). Food came out quick. The regular size beef soup was quite large especially with a person like myself with an appetite. Lots of vermicelli Chinese style noodles, lots of beef, plenty of savoriness in the broth. Enough produce. Noodles tender. The dumplings don't sound great, but the kitchen found a way to pack curry flavor with chicken into 8 dumplings. Lots of spice. Good on it's own but also okay with the soy sauce. Staff checked on my table frequently. Water was filled consistently. Bill was settled promptly. Good: fast friendly service, affordable delicious food. Bad: only one appetite. I would come back.

Delicious, and

And Quick. Our Chinese friends treated us to an afternoon delight with delicious shrimp noodles, beef tendon noodles, spicy aromatic mixed platter - 2 flavors topped sweet fried buns!

Flavorful and cheap

By Nan D |

If you are looking to fill up with delicious noodle soup on a small budget, this is your place. Everything is well made, and very flavorful. The decor and ambience is nothing to write home about, it's all about the food.

Good Portions, Good Value, No Credit Card

By HeaveNEarth |

We had noodle soups and some dim sum. The soups are fulfilling and had good portion of meat. In Chinatown and a 5 min walk from the Convention Center & Reading Terminal Market. No Credit Card accepted. Only Cash and Venmo. There is ATM at the restaurant. Fast service. Good value.Value. It's a hand drawn noodles restaurant, but the waitress would oddly ask you if you want noodles, handdrwan or not.

Noodle Heaven

By Urius |

They seat you, they serve you, they feed you. It's fast service and great homemade food. Every time I visit Philly, this is a destination for lunch. The prices are not cheap but not expensive. It's a reasonable place where you will leave satisfied.

Good Eats!

Tried the hand drawn noodles with the pork soy sauce based off of past reviews and they were delicious and filling. Also, very affordable. About $7 for a bowl and 2 of us got full off it. I will be back next time im in ChinaTown.

Maybe Expectations Too High...

By SmartyBoy |

First night in Philadelphia in a long time, I decided to head to Chinatown to see what was open on a Sunday evening. Noodles were just OK - I had them pan fried and they were a little soggy and not altogether hot and piping as I'd expect when they come right off the wok with that "wok hay" that you're looking for. The portion was decent but not heaping. I also ordered pea shoots which were done well but also pricey at $13. Service was quick. Maybe next time I'll start with a cheesesteak! But I've definitely had better in many other cities.

Fabulous, inexpensive noodles and dumplings

By Mike L |

We stopped here for a quick lunch. I was really impressed with how delicious the curry chicken dumplings were. I then got a hand-drawn noodle soup with roast duck which had so much flavor. We had some baby bok choy too which was great. My friend ordered that sliced pig ear which I tried but was a bit too weird for me. Take note, this place is cash only and BYOB.

Very Good Noodles

By Tori A |

Even though I enjoyed the noodles, I didn't care for their soup broth. However, I will be sure to try one of their hot dishes next time instead. For more pictures and commentary, check out www.gustatori.com.

Family Enjoyed the meal

By MSeinfeld |

Great Food Great Service Scallion Pancakes a must order Took the family after seeing nice reviews on Trip Advisor. Will return

Wonderful noodles great appetizers

By Michelle S |

Went here with the family. The scallion pancakes and spring rolls were fantastic. Noodle dishes were wonderful (meat is usually served on the side which was nice). There are so many noodles we couldn't finish them all - so you may want to share the soup if possible. Overall wonderful place and very reasonable.

hand drawn noodles

By Gene L |

Hand drawn noodles in soup or platters. I had the pork noodle soup and my wife the shrimp noodle soup. Both excellent., filling and at a good price. The service was as good as the food. This is not a fancy place but if you want a good meal the next time you are in Chinatown, here is the place to go

Try the soups

By Mark S |

On a chilly Saturday afternoon 4 of us stopped in for lunch. I had the lamb noodle soup and it was delicious. Big bowl with lots of noodles, veges and lamb. Noodles were of a very pleasant texture without being too soft. Broth was so good that I picked the bowl up and drank all of it. I think most of the people in the restaurant were speaking Chinese so that's always a good sign. Only down side is that it's cash only. For 4 entrees and some dumplings and drinks it was about $35 + tip.

Hand Pulled Noodles! Cash Only.

By Stephanie L |

Delicious hand pulled noodles served in a bunch of different ways. We tried the soup, stir fry and peanut noodles. We also had the scallion pancake and it's fantastic. Staff are nice and it's quick. It's cash only!

AMAZING!

By LilB33 |

I hope I return to Philadelphia so I can eat at Nan Zhou again. My mouth just started watering while typing this review. Clean restaurant that had many choices on their menu. Service wasn't the friendliest but the food makes up for it. I ordered the vegetable noodles and it was amazing. Not over salted or seasoned. It was absolutely perfect! Everyone at my table was happy and spoke of their meal days later. I wish I lived locally. Give them a try.

Somewhat disappointing

By larrybard |

After reading all the prior glowing reviews, and being rather fond of this type of cuisine, I was quite optimistic that I would greatly enjoy the food. But found it to be nothing special (though the service was attentive and excellent). We liked the scallion pancakes, but found the pork and chive dumplings (ordered fried, not steamed), noodles with peanut sauce, spring rolls and beef brisket noodle soup to be just okay (and the meat in the brisket soup to be too chewy).

Excellent Hand Drawn and Knife Shaved Noodles

By zenteng |

Nan Zhou is the origination point of the Silk Road and these noodles were the special dish of the nomadic people for 160 years now. You can now enjoy the beef noodles which were served to the people of high status during the Ching Dynasty. Any aficionado of Chinese noodles will greatly appreciate what this noodle house serves. Appetizers- cold beef tripe with spicy sauce, spicy beef tendon on a bed of pickled vegetables, pig's ear and cucumber in sauce. These were all very good. Dumplings- Avoid as the skins were too thick and the fillings were bland. Hand Drawn Noodles- House Special Meatball, Sliced Beef, Beef Brisket were all excellent. Roast Duck, Seafood and Clam not so good. Vegetables- Spinach and Chinese Watercress with garlic very tasty. The wait staff are very pleasant and helpful. Cash only. So when visiting the Liberty Bell take a stroll over to Nan Zhou for delicious noodles. We ate here three times on our two recent visits to Philly.

Delicious Noodles

By Danielle B |

I went to Nan Zhou and ordered fried chicken noodles and they were amazing- The noodles were thin, not greasy, and were blended nicely with the chicken and veggies. My food came out very quickly and I had a very attentive waitress. I will probably take my parents here next time they come to town!

Noodles!

By Mary L |

Heeded the advice of other reviewers and arrived before the lunch crowd. Casual, clean, spare decor. Service was efficient and thoughtful. The hand-pulled and shaved noodles were outstanding—good texture, right amount of sauce, generous amounts of pork and veggies. Tea was hot and fresh. Prices were tiny, portions more than ample. Go!

Cash only! Noodles galore

By 508EllenCee |

Sunday lunch must be the single busiest time in Chinatown to eat. This place was jumping! The short line when we entered only grew, as folks lined up for fresh Chinese noodle dishes. We really enjoyed our meal, enlivened by some fried vegetarian dumplings. But beware, this is a CASH ONLY restaurant. We came across several on our trip to Philly, does no one want to pay the credit card fees?

Sliced beef soup bliss

By Sailor Shay |

My third visit in 18 months, and my third time totally satisfied with a superb bowl of soup. I brought my friend this time, her first, and she agreed, best soup ever. A huge bowl of tender noodles, delicate slices of beef, thinly sliced ginger root, celery, cilantro, and greens in a flavorful broth. The wait staff may not always be the most personable, but I come for the soup. We'll be back! With cash. ACCEPTS CASH ONLY!

Hand made noodles

By mark d |

Not bad try a variety of dishes...noodles were good with the seafood imatation crab... (downer). Service was fast and efficient. Did not enjoy the cold jellyfish amd meatballs were not flavorful.

Nice, speedy, and good!

By James M |

The restaurant was nice. The scene was good. The staff were nice. The food came out fast. And the food was very good. A nice Chinese food place to try when in the area!!!

I really hoped for more flavor

By lhamilt77 |

Given how highly ranked Nan Zhou is when it comes to hand pulled noodles in Philly, it seemed like a must-eat place to visit. We tried a variety of items, curry dumplings, noodles with pork soy sauce, vegetables in oyster sauce, house fried rice, and some lamb sticks. How is it that at a place known for noodles, the best thing there was the fried rice?! The noodles and dumplings were woefully one-note in flavor, and just didn't leave us with the feeling of wanting more. Can't say that I'll never eat here again, but I'm definitely not in a rush to go back.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Delicious food, but i didn't like the staff attitude and the fast-food look of the place

By Eric K |

I have to admit, the food was delicious. I was also hungry and anything might have taste delicious but I might have got the best noodle soup in Philadelphia. However the staff attitude was poor. I told the waitress from the beginning that I am allergic to cilantro and they should not put that in my soup. She came with a soup covered with fresh chopped cilantro. I told her again that I can not eat cilantro and she said "oh, yes" - took the soup back and came with the same soup from which she removed most of the cilantro. How bad is that? Maybe she even spat in it. I didn't leave any tip (they overcharged the bill anyway) and then they started to in Asian dialect in between themselves and point toward me. Obviously those were not praise words.

For noodle rookies -- wear something that you don't care about to enjoy the feast

By BHUANG69 |

I had a good dinner here once and I knew my friend would like this place and so when we visited Philly, I took him here. We did enjoy what we had tremendously but one thing that we could have done in hindsight is to ask him not to wear his shirt before he left the hotel. For appetizer, we had the two veggie combo for $6.95. We picked pickled turnip (it's actually daikon, white raddish) and also the kelp salad. The pickled turnip is very good -- both sweet and savory and the kelp salad is spicy. Note that this kind of kelp is not the kind that you would get with shinny green color in Japanese restaurants. The shinny green ones that taste sweet has artificial coloring and sugar in it. The kelp served here was processed minimally and still retain that ocean smell and taste and it is an acquired taste. For entree we shared a beef noodle soup (house special) an a sour and spicy cold noodle with chicken. The broth of the beef noddle soup is so hearty, wonderful and aromatic and we both enjoyed it tremendously. The cold noddle was also very enjoyable. My friend is a noodle rookie. So he got splashes of broth all over his shirt. I am a seasoned noddle soup eater. I suggested to my friend that next time he comes, just wear a dark-colored old sweater and he said it is a good idea. We paid $34 in total after a 20% tip.

EXCELLENT HOUSE SPECIAL BEEF SOUP WITH HAND PULL NOODLES

By julinm29 |

Hands down, the best beef soup I have ever eaten in a restaurant. We ordered 2 bowls, one hand pulled noodles and hand shaved noodles. The hand shaved noodles was a bit thick & heavy. Still good. But, the hand pulled noodles were EXCELLENT!!! The noodles were a bit chewy. The broth was super rich, flavorful & very satisfying. Oh, so much beef in both of our bowls. The beef balls were really, really yummy! Go and order this soup with the hand pulled noodles & like us, you think you had died & gone to heaven! Yes, it’s that good!!! Definitely will return when we are back in the area!!!!

Very good noodles

By Beth |

My boyfriend and I came here to get some take out food and we were very happy with the food, he got the vegetable fried noodles and I got the shrimp noodle soup, both very nice dishes, the prices are very reasonable and they are very generous with the portion sizes!

Fresh And Delicious Seafood Noodle Soup

By DMBT195 |

Stopped by for a late dinner just before closing and was happy that the staff was very accommodating. We were the last of about six customers remaining and our food was served surprisingly quick. We also had the steamed curry dumplings that were flavorful and done right. Nan Zhou is definitely a noodle house worth visiting while in Philadelphia.

Authentic Noodles, great find

Best spring rolls I have ever tasted!

By umcpastor |

I am in Philadelphia for an overnight visit. I lived near chinatown for many years and had my favorite places but I had never eaten at this Noodle house. Last night I corrected that oversight. I was alone. I did notice that there were many guest there who were by themselves. This little Noodle house iseems to be a popular choice for those eating alone. I was warmly greeted upon entering and seated immediately. A table was pulled away from a three table arrangement and I was seated. The condiment tray was placed so that wpeither of the tables could reach it. I ordered two appetizers. A diced cucumber in sauce that was very good. It was refreshing and I would defintely order it again. I also ordered spring rolls. They were absolutly fantastic. The best I have ever eaten. They were light and crispy and served with a delicate sweet sauce. My Noodle dish was the stirfried seafood drawn noodles. They were very good. Most of the diners were having the noodle soup rather than the stirfry. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their selection. The food was delivered to my table as it was ready....cucumber, than noodle and then spring rools. All three were on the table at the same time. They only take cash. No credit cards. I can heartily recommend this little nondiscript Noodle house. It has a well deserved reputation.

Cash Only in China Town

By Dianne W |

Located in the heart of China town on Race street, Nan Zhou was highly recommended by Philly Segway guide as we rode by. Yes, hand drawn noodles...your choice of wide or thin...for served in soups or stir fried. You select the soup and stir fry ingredients from seafood to oxtail. Either is a full meal but they also know how to perfectly prepare veggie dishes like Bok Choy. Try a bubble drink. Delightful servers. Always packed with locals.

Authentic and inexpensive Chinese restaurant featuring fresh handmade noodles

By Andrew Bowers |

Long standing staple Nan Zhou has long been one of our favorites in Philly's legit Chinatown neighborhood. A decade ago they were a tiny restaurant with a limited menu a block from where they are now. The new location and expanded menu however still feature the core classics that made them locally famous. On our most recent visit we noticed they have finally increased their $4 peanut noodles all the way to $4.25. Seriously. This place is dedicated to their methods and it shows in their noodles. Get the peanut noodles. Cash Only.

Noodles, Noodles so many to choose from you'll flip your noodle

By drsoozie |

I've eaten at a lot of Pho places but that's not at all what this is. It truly is noodles prepared in a variety of ways. Besides the noodles there are also dumplings and appetizers. We had the fried dumplings and they were some of the best I have had coast to coast. For my main course I had the stir-fried noodles. Although they were fried they weren't greasy but very flavorful. Lots of meat mixed in along with some vegetables. I was served a big plate, which I thought would be dinner and late night snack; but they were so good I couldn't stop eating! Everything was fresh, the noodles, and the vegetables. If I lived closer I'd be a regular here. Go and try it! Even if you think you don't like Chinese food, you'll like this. Who doesn't like noodles???

Needs a little umph

By BHUANG69 |

The food itself is not bad but more one the blend side. My friend was not impressed but after I started using the condiments on the table, the food starts to taste like what it should taste like. I would recommend the staff to add more salt and vinegar to the food. After all, in Northwestern China people eat their noodles and dumplings with special vinegar. The service was good though. The girls were super friendly.
