Eclectic Mix of Indian and Mexican

By Tony S |

The menu can throw you - toggling between Indian and Mexican dishes. We decided to mix and match. We started with Tikka Con Queso and added Onion Nan (bread). The dip was smoky and rich and mixed well with the Nan. Two of us ordered Verde Masala for our entrees with lamb. (Picture below.) You can order it as spicy hot as you like and we got the second to hottest and it was perfect. I like a hot bite to my Mexican and Indian cooking but any hotter would have been painful. You order at the bar and they bring the food and drinks out to you on a table outside. My cocktail was Smoked Paloma - mezcal with red grapefruit and lime juice. I liked it a lot but mezcal isn't for everyone. The two ladies at our table didn't like the flavor. I ordered a second one. Its smoky flavor and citrus tang was a good compliment to the spicy food.

Terrific Tikka, Meh Mango Lassi

By DanaSmith8 |

Upon coming unto this building the side of it is a stone facade that is colorful and beautifully painted. The staff was friendly and inviting. We chose to sit outside and enjoy the Austin weather. For the appetizer ordered the roasted chips and salsa that consist of spicy lentil crackers served with mint chutney and homemade salsa. The lentil crackers are thin and crispy (not salted) served with spicy mint chutney as well as spicy homemade salsa. The appetizer was average and I don't think it's worth another try. For the main course I had some of the millionaire curry with lamb and tikka masala with lamb with an order of garlic naan. Almost every item on their menu can be customized to your spice level-mild, medium, hot, or desired hot. The millionaire curry is spicy Mumbai style slum dog curry cooked with fresh tomatoes, ginger, garlic, onion, and spices and the tikka masala is a Mumbai style cashew butter cream sauce cooked with fresh tomatoes, ginger, and onions. For a drink I ordered my favorite, a mango lassi. The appetizer came and was average, but I was not looking to be impressed with it. The chutney and the homemade salsa have a medium spice level. The mango lassi came next and that was an even bigger disappointment. I am used to a cold, smooth, full of mango flavored drink that I order at every place that serves it. This mango lassi did not have a lot of mango flavor, it was more yogurty than anything else, thumbs down. I was hoping that the main course would make up for the first two things that I had tried, and it did. The tikka masala was creamy and flavorful, the lamb was well cooked, and the basmati rice was cooked well and provided a nice contrast to the sauce. The garlic naan was a too flat for me towards the middle of it so it was hard to soak up the delicious tikka masala sauce, but I would still order the naan again. The millionaire curry was good as well, but as the person who ordered it, ordered the hot level it was a bit too much for me to without eating the rice and bread afterwards. The person really liked it and as they like a higher spice level than I do it was great for them. Had I not ordered the mango lassi or the roasted chips with salsa I would have rated this review a 4.

Just so so ... okay for something different but nothing to write home about

By ATX_Golfer_n_Foodie |

Asked our server for a recommendation between the Kheema Masala and the Kheema Enchiladas and ordered the recommended Enchiladas. For the price the food came in smaller portions than I had expected so am glad I went with the enchiladas as they came three to an order. It was an okay meal - nothing to write home about. The garlic nan was tasty as was the gulab jamun. Service was good.

Interesting fusion of Indian and Mexican food.

By Mary S |

Located in a typical East Austin house, it still has the old feel of Austin during is's "wierd days". The feel of the place reminds me of the old Cafe Mundi. I miss that place but Nasha has more interesting food. I love the keema - ground lamb with a choice of sauces, prepared in a quesadilla (my favorite) or by itself or in an enchilada. There are many spices in common with both cuisines, cilantro, tomatoes, onions, garlic, coriander etc. so I think the fusion makes sense for the most part. The bar is pretty extensive as well. Lunch has a Thali platter which makes it easy to try an assortment of delicios things. The biggest problem is making a decision and not over ordering.

Delish!

I have been trying to find good Indian food since I moved to Austin. I found this place online as "one of the best brunch spots in Austin". Once i arrived, i learned they don't really serve "brunch" as the menu stated on their website, but it was not difficult to find something to eat. I went with Egg Burgi tacos - which is a breakfast meal :) - and it was delicious. I ended up getting their Saag to go, which is pretty good (my mom makes the best kind so it's tough to beat!) I also had a mango mimosa, which was yummy. I'll definitely go back!

Really okayish

Well this restaurant has only one thing going for it and that is the decor. Whereas the establishment has tried it's best to go ahead and place the decor as to look Indian the server for my lunch was unable to tell me why an Egyptian face mask was gracing the walls. We visited for lunch at the very not so easy to find address of the restaurant and were surprised by the presence of thali ( hindi word for plate as well as food and beverage lingo in India for fixed meals ) The same was not at all bad on quantity but I noted with regret that most of the dishes had been tweaked to suit the palate of the locals which was not that great either for their experience nor for my own wish to have Indian food . The pricing is fine. I did enjoy the shrimp side dish which I had ordered for while losing my belief in samosas after tasting them at this particular place. I hope they start serving Indian food authentic to taste soon ! They have good outdoor seating which is not that great for summers though !

Super food, super service, super price!!

Cannot say enough about Nasha!! Always great food!! Can pick your own spice level -- me, medium -- my spouse, hot. Wait staff eager to help. Absolutely wonderful!!! I urge everyone to check it out!!!

Third times a charm

By Traveldiive |

This time was the third visit to Nasha for Indian food that is delicious. We took our friends here for a late lunch for a birthday celebration. The food here is consistently fresh and good. There are a variety of dishes to choose from. The dal soup is yummy, and the lamb and goat dishes are very good. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared them amongst the four of us. All the selections were very tasty. The lamb coconut dish was very good and you could taste the coconut in the sauce. You can request mild spice or medium of hot for the dishes you order. This was the third visit, but it will not be the last...try their good Indian food.

Fun little place

By Jen78703 |

This is a renovated house on E 7th st. There is inside and a small patio with outside seating. Its right on 7th so it's traffic noisy but still a nice place to sit. It's painted with bright colors- just a fun vibe. My daughter and I were there around the brunch hour so I ordered a pomegranate mimosa.(But there isn't a brunch menu) We ordered an assortment Indian food (they also have a Tex-Mex fusion type choices). The waiter was not very helpful as afar as suggestions but we liked what we ordered. There are spice/heat choices and quite a few vegan options. We loved the silver colored little plates and water goblets.

Nice Indian Flavors

I dined here on a recent weekend with my family, we were looking for a brunch option on Austin's east side and Nasha popped up on a list on a google search. We had done a nice morning walk around the north side of town lake, so we were hungry. We were disappointed to find out that they no longer have their brunch menu, but our disappointment quickly gave way to enthusiasm when we saw the rest of the menu. They have a really nice selection of appetizers, some traditional Indian dishes (with several different sauce options) and a selection of fusion Tex-Mex/Indian tacos. It took us a while to decide what we wanted, but we enjoyed everything we had. I started with a curried margarita. I had no idea what to expect, but I thought it was great. The margarita flavors were wonderfully balanced, and it wasn't spicy but it had a little kick to it that made it really enjoyable. For starters, we had veggie samosas, which were really good (we enjoyed the mango chutney, thought the tamarind chutney had a good balance, and also enjoyed the mint chutney). The naan was nice, though we didn't love the roti. For my main I had the shrimp in millionaire's curry. I got it medium, and I thought it could have been a bit spicier (which I of course could have asked for) but I also thought it was delicious. After I finished the shrimp I used the rice to soak up the sauce, and after I ran out of rice I used the naan. My wife had the veggie biryani, she thought it was good but not great. Our kids enjoyed the breads and also split a paneer quesadilla (which also came with cheese). It was a pretty slow Sunday lunch when we were there, but the seating was comfortable, the service was attentive and the music level was comfortable. They have a nice outside dining patio, but we weren't about to do that in Austin in August after a hike. Austin is growing (especially the east side) and the restaurant varieties and options are expanding, but Indian food for some reason remains a bit of an under-served niche in Austin. That being said, I really enjoyed Nasha and I think they bring a unique and delicious twist on traditional and fusion Indian food to the Austin scene...I definitely recommend it as a nice break from Tex-Mex in Austin.

Great Experience!

By Hannah K |

I've been to many Indian food places in Austin and this is one of my favorites. The service was quick and friendly. I loved their glasses and plates, so fun. The garlic naan was huge and sooooo good. I got the veggie tikka masala and it was phenomenal. The place was very comfortable, we sat there and talked for an hour and a half. There is plenty of free parking that is easy to get to. I would go back again and again!

Very good food and friendly place

By Traveldiive |

We stopped here for lunch. The waitperson was very nice and let us sample some of the food and a micro beer before ordering to make sure we would like it all, that the food was not overly spicy. I ordered the goat taco and it was very good. It came with some lentil dhal and we ordered some nan. All was fresh and at a good price. There is parking at the side of the building. We will be going back for sure.

Great Indian Food in Austin!

By Glenna C |

A not so well-known Austin gem! 1614 EAST 7TH, AUSTIN, TX 78702 If you want great Indian food, a cozy environment (small dining area), and a decent price, check out Nasha on east 6th street.

Skip the Indian-Mexican fusion, stick to the Indian fare.

By Nakstrani |

We went there for lunch from office. There is plenty of parking but you may not realize it if you come in from the 7th street - that's the back-side of the restaurant. We were seated promptly & the service was great throughout the meal. The servers are well informed about all the dishes & can answer any of your questions. This restaurant had piqued my interest because it features Indian-Mexican fusion food. Considering the complex cuisines involved, I was looking forward to some interesting takes. I do realize that fusion is challenging to pull off even in ordinary circumstances. But sadly, Nasha misses the mark completely when it comes to the fusion dishes! I ordered the Chicken Tandoori Tacos. The chicken was just grilled chicken & not the tandoori I was expecting. The tacos were made using Indian Chapati/Roti which is thicker than Mexican tortilla used in typical tacos. As a result, the tacos are not light but more on the heavier side. Considering the they serve 2 of them, I could not finish my dish. IMHO a 'fulka' would be much more appropriate for this dish. The tacos come with variety of condiments - chutneys (Indian), guacamole (Mexican) & Dal (lentils). I'm sad to see they didn't experiment with the condiments & went with the safest options. Personally, I found Dal to be a weird pairing for the tacos! The taste profile of dal does not complement the tacos at all. Again, IMHO if it does nothing for the dish, why serve it? Instead of Dal why not offer something yogurt based to draw out the tandoori spices? And please serve tandoori chicken as the taco filling if you're calling it that on the menu. Otherwise just change the menu to say grilled chicken. Personally, I would have also liked to see some 'crunch' in the dish. How about adding Indian salad (onion, tomatoes etc.) - a take on Mexican salsa, instead of the usual chutneys? Lose the grilled veggies smothering the grilled chicken in the tacos! I'm sure if you tweaked your dishes a bit they will be more popular. One other person in my group tried the enchiladas & liked that - but I did not taste them, so I don't know if they are better than the tacos. Fortunately, everybody else went with 'thali' which was good - they tried the chicken, goat & minced lamb. I had the opportunity to try the food from the thali & everything was spot on. By the time we left, the place was packed. But I saw that most of the folks were eating Indian food. So do visit Nasha, but I would not recommend any of their fusion dishes till they 'fix' them.

Nice and cosy - just about 'ok' food wise

We reached pretty late and close to the closing time. Service was efficient and pleasant. Food was satisfactory. We went for the lamb biryani and chicken curry.

A taste of India

By Texas_travelers7479 |

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local Austin tour guide & I am happy to say it lived up to our expectations. It was a quiet, relaxing restaurant & the delicious aromas hit you as soon as you walked through the door. We had the tikka masala & malvani roasted coconut curry... I'm salivating now as I write this review :) The food was delicious & served in a timely manner & our host was welcoming & efficient. Austin has so many wonderful eateries to choose from. I hope we visit Nasha again, well worth exploring more of the menu. Thank-you.

Good Food, Slow Service

By Lacy M |

Don’t go here if you are in a hurry, but if you have time to wait on the slow service, the tikka con queso will change your life.

Fabulous food

By Conner B |

Great food and drink fully expanded Indian foods. Well recommended drink bar. Nice quiet outside 7th street view and good inside environment. Could use just a bit of sall sound buffing in a small intimate environment.

Tasty Indian food

By Charleszckr |

After a long bike ride, My wife and I enjoyed a tasty Indian lunch at Nasha. I had a goat dish served in tacos. It was delicious. We also ordered some garlic ban bread, which was quite good. I washed down the meal with a refreshing Indian beer. Looking forward to returning to this restaurant.

Less than expected!

This has very interesting decor. Dishes have unusual names. Beyond all that, food is not that tasty and below average for a restaurant of this type.

Top Notch Indian Food & Lovely Ambiance--One of our Austin Favs!

By philandcarol |

We've come to love this spot and the food has just gotten better over the years. Our last visit was the best yet! My husband tried the fusion burrito which is topped with their amazing creamy Tika sauce. I am hooked on the Biryani which I always order with the Paneer. It's not dinner without the "chips and salsa" which are lentil flour crisps served with a wonderful green chutney or red salsa. Also the Tika masala is just fabulous. Their garlic naan is fluffy and hot and delish! One of the highlights is their cardamom margaritas which can be ordered by the pitcher. My husband usually orders the curry margarita with a little jalapeno. We also love the warm, colorful ambiance and good service and often hold birthday or other gatherings there. Many folks seem to like the patio but we prefer inside. This is an absolute must try for Indian cuisine in Austin!

Best Indian experience in Austin

By James |

This spot is one of my favorite choices for flavor in Austin. The food is Indian & tex-mex fusion which may sound like stretch at first, but it is awesome! The restaurant feels very cozy and casual. The walls both inside and out are vibrantly layered with bright inviting austintattious colors. All the food is soooo tasty. I usually always start out with garlic naan and queso. The traditional masala and samosas are my go to. My fiancé loves the salmon tacos. You can pick a curry sauce from a few different choices to go on top. Traditional masala or the Verde Masala (spicy)! Nasha also has a full bar with some craft cocktails and a nice selection of local craft favorites. All and all, the place hits the spot at a decent price with everything i'm looking for without having to commit to any tourist traps.

Friendly service and cool vibe but overcooked vegetables

By Melody M |

Seated promptly on a Friday night and greeted by pleasant wait staff who was helpful with our drink order. Drinks arrived promptly but those were the highlights. Our meal arrived before the appetizer, which got delivered to someone else. The yellow lentils I ordered with medium spice were bland and cooked to the point of being more of a sauce than an entrée. When the samosas arrived, the potato and peas were overcooked like mashed potatoes. On the plus side, my companion enjoyed a chicken curry and they were very apologetic about the appetizer mix-up and took it off our bill.

Fun place for Indian Tex-Mex

By familiade52017 |

Lots of great vegetarian options. Food is unsurprisingly spicy. We really enjoyed our meal especially the tostadas. Only issue is that is on the higher end of prices.

Popular but didn't provide any suprises

By Lakerat789 |

I'm a curry fanatic so I set very high standards for any Indian Restaurant so I'm not being unfair with my review, I'm coming from a well travel and well fed curry snob. The restaurant was busy on Sat night so to avoid a 30 min wait we ate at the bar, the service from the bartender was prompt and polite. Couple of Veggie Samosas to start which were tasty and followed up with a Chicken Vindaloo and for my wife, a Chicken Tikka Marsala. What earned the average rating was that the chef is trying to be clever and missing the mark. The vindaloo although spicy was lacking depth of flavor, the Chicken Tikka was made with a cashew based cream which had a burned taste to it and in both cases the amount of chicken per portion was small compared to the amount of sauce. Another gripe was the riata, I've never had it made with tomatoes before and it simply missed the mark compared to traditional raita. 2 Iced teas and a garlic Naan (which was very thin compared to what I'm used to) and our bill was $37. There's much better options for the discerning Indian food fan in Austin especially when the chef sticks to the basics and doesn't try and get overly clever for no discernible benefit.

Great Indian-Tex Mex Fusion on the East Side

By Jonathan I |

A wonderful blending of traditional Indian flavors and Austin Tex-Mex flair, it is a cute little restaurant on 7th street just east of Downtown that not only has delicious gluten-free and vegan options, but is also open late (until Midnight Sunday-Thursday and until 2am Friday & Saturday). I like their Chips & Salsa (a papadum served with mint chutney and pico de gallo) and have thoroughly enjoyed their Dal Tarka Malvani, Ghati Masala Dal, and Sprouts Bhaji (the last one in particular). While GF and Vegan designations are present on the menu, a server can further point out options that are both gluten-free and vegan accommodating. Looking forward to coming back here with friends. Great prices for great food and thumbs way up for late-night hours.

We enjoyed it

By Joe B |

We had a very nice dinner at Nasha. The service was slow to start out but picked up. We did have to wait awhile to get a place our drink order. The food was very good, quick, flavorful and lived up to our expectations. We will be back.

So Cool!

By Sephuzzy |

Crazy good. Indian-Mex fusion. Flavor-full! Really lots to enjoy. Everything we ordered was unique yet traditional, and delicious. Ground lamb enchiladas with tikka masala molé.

Decent food, mixed feelings on service

By Linda F |

We ate there on a recent Monday evening. The Aloo Gobi was delicious, as were the samosas. We also ordered the chicken enchiladas, which I found rather dry and uninteresting. They come with a tikka sauce and we asked for more sauce for the enchiladas and the samosas, which was promptly brought to our table. However, we were charged 25 cents for each one, which seems silly. I've never been charged like that for a tiny additional sauce in other restaurants. Our server (Rita) was great and quick to offer suggestions. However, we were seated by another employee. This will probably sound petty but we had arrived right at 7 pm, which is when their happy hour ends. We asked if it was still possible to get in on it, and the response was "nope". It just seemed so curt and rude that we almost left at that point. A kinder answer such as "sorry, you just missed it" would have made our experience much better and left us with a better feeling. Sometimes it's just the little things....

Delicious Indian food in east Austin

By Janet M |

Happened to stay at an airbnb rental nearby and walked by this restaurant several times. We couldn't resist taking pictures of the beautiful and psychedelic wall painting in front. Loved their motto, too: "Get high on Indian cuisine." Well, we did. We sat outside on the patio on an unseasonably warm February night and had a couple of local IPAs. My husband ordered lamb biryani and I ordered kale and chana dal. Both came with rice and were delicious. We both ordered naan since the server indicated that these were on the small side, which was not the case and one for 2 of us would have been sufficient. But who doesn't love naan? We save one for the next day and ate it with cheese. We didn't save room for dessert and maybe not many do because there are only 4 offerings. I was tempted to have a mango lassi for dessert but desisted. Next time. Service was friendly and efficient. It was a really nice meal. They have late hours, too.

Thumbs Up!!

By chickpeachick2 |

My husband and I dined at Nasha last night for first time. Very friendly service with outdoor seating. The flavors in the vegetable saag and kale and lentil Dahl were amazing. Atmosphere could be stepped up , but overall a great meal and I would go back .

Delish Indian fare.

By Carol S |

Sat on the outdoor patio, garlic naan with chutney, lamb biryani, fish malvani tacos. Friendly staff, great food. Casual atmosphere.

Great Indian food, cool little restaurant!

By Marcia K |

I ate lunch with a friend for her birthday at Nasha at her request and was really pleasantly surprised. While I do like Indian food, I have not, in the past, been a fan of curries. HOWEVER!!!! Nasha makes a Millionaire curry that is just outstanding, full of flavor and really delicious. I sampled that along with the chicken tikka masala as well as a great ginger soup. Lots of punch in the ginger! At first, I thought that there might not be enough meat in the dishes, but after I finished and the afternoon wore on, I realized that I was still very pleasantly full, so no need to worry about that. the restaurant is very nice, cool to look at, and has quite good off street parking! Do try other thing s on the menu, but I can recommend these.

Unique Indian Food

By Debbie S |

Nasha has an excellent vegetarian and vegan selection. Watch out for the spice selection. Mild still has a little kick. We tried several different appetizers and entrees and everyone in our party enjoyed their meal.

Just WOW!

By Ben S |

Amazingly fresh, perfectly prepared food with wonderful flavor, excellent service, warm and welcoming ambiance! You just have to try it for yourself, I'm not sure words alone can describe just how good this place is! I can't wait to go back! (The prices were extremely reasonable, too)

Very disappointed

By Hema Nair |

We went there based on reviews. It's reasonably priced, and employees behind counter are super nice and hard working. But the food is Average- and the owner is rude, arrogant, obnoxious, and racist. He speaks down to women (probably OK treating women that way in India), but asked me to go out if i need more than what's provided on table. He treats his employees like crap. if we care for "equal rights for all" STOP going there. went to mumtaz down the road, which is same price and MUCH better experience. Shame on the owner!

Worth More visits on the east side

By Ronald W |

While visiting austin we keep passing Nasha near Houston-Tillitson university and wondered how good Indian food could be in east austin. Well, wonder no more! It's pretty good and worth more visits to zero in on what really scratches where you itch. We had the millionaires lamb curry which was good the goat byrani which was pretty good and the plain nan which if you prefer the thinner less chewy type (as the resident expert does) was very good. The Bombay refresher was quite tasty and the wait staff very attentive and pleasant despite being very busy

food sucks

By Donna H |

food sucks save your money needs to have a dress code ,not a dance hall, did not care if we were happy with food ,we ask for mild got HOT said that was the way it came out ,not true the drink was watered down not good will never go back as long as we live food sucks

Cozy Place with Good Indian Food

By JStatler71 |

I can't comment on the Tex-Mex/Indian fusion dishes, as we stuck with strictly Indian fare. The naan and samosas were great, and all of the main dishes were very tasty. You can select your spice level on some of the dishes; some, like vindaloo, aren't available in a mild setting (which is perfectly reasonable). All of it was very flavorful and service was also very good. I woygo back.

Excellent lighter Indian food

By Elias W |

Excellent Indian food made with less cream and less ghee. We were a bit skeptical as we went in and checked the menu. However, we were delighted with excellent Naan, delicious butter chicken, amazing slum chicken and lamb keema and a good salsa verde chicken. The spicy shrimp appetizer was good and their Indian margarita was surprisingly delicious. We would definitely come back.
