Not authentic

By JPTRAVEL |

I’ve been looking for a Portuguese restaurant and so I tried their traditional Portuguese dishes. The Bacalhau wasn’t I expected, Cod was over grilled. It was dry and a little bit salty. The garlic over powered the natural flavor of the Cod. The pasteis de nata was horrible. Incomparable from the original pasteis I had in Lisbon. The pasteis costs $3.75 each whereas €1.50 in Lisbon. Overall, I was very disappointed.

Nice place for a quite Dinner - Great breakfast

By Elie B |

We came to try this Portuguese restaurant for dinner and had a very nice and quiet evening. The servers were very attentive and went out of their way to make us feel good. Food preparation was a bit slow although the place was only half full. The menu offered a large selection of mostly precooked items in special sauces and with special side dishes as well. Food presentation was ok and everything tasted good. The cooking style seemed more like home cooking but nothing stood out as spectacular in flavor or presentation. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner but do not look forward to come again.

awsome food awesone service

It;s a small place but with personality, you feel to be at a restaurant in Portugal, we were served always with a smile, we were 4 people in our party and we all loved their food,

Delicious

By Roddy P |

Being a bit of a Portuguese bakery fan, I was very impressed with the offering at this small, but impressive, operation. The service was excellent and the breakfast we had was delicious. The corn bread was awesome and the pancakes very good The scrambled eggs went down very well too and the coffee hit the spot. Lovely little spot.

Was impressed

By Mr C |

I am Portuguese and obviously love portuguese food. We looked for a Portuguese restaurant here in LA and found this one. I ordered the Bacalhão com Natas. The food was a little bit different than the traditional Portuguese food. However it was really tasty and delicious. I was impressed because I didn't thought it would be that good. Furthermore the service was excellent!

PORTUGAL IN STUDIO CITY

By Kris W |

I had only been to Natas Pastries once, about three years ago, and then only for an afternoon coffee and...pastry! I always wanted to try it for dinner, but somehow, never got around to it until a friend suggested we go there last week. She's a fan and quite familiar with the menu. I ordered the traditional dish, Feijoada, and even though I don't like the idea of a heavy stew during a heatwave, this was so incrdibly delicious, I couldn't stop eating. I forced myself to stop half-way through the enormous dish and can't wait to finish my leftovers. My friend had a beautifully presented shrimp plate and raved about it. Of course, we couldn't resist having a pastry for dessert and they're as tasty as they are pretty - and there are way too many from which to choose. The service was excellent and the tiny dining room, with its lovely tile work, is a gem. I can't wait to go back during the winter...if we ever have one again!...because the room has a warm, inviting glow.

Wonderful surprise & a little bit of Portugal

By YolyPalomo |

We stopped for the pastries(natas) and they were delicious! We’ve been dreaming about going back to visit Portugal and these pastries really tasted like we were there! Delicious!

Blessed to have this gem as my neighborhood restaurant

By Keith J |

This is walking distance from my home, but it feels like thousands of miles away. Breakfasts are spectacular with stuff you don't get anywhere. You can have your omelets with unique ingredients, such as Spanish Chorizo, Portuguese Linguica, a variety of cheeses, a variety of veggies. The sweet bread is to die for. The coffee always a treat and excellent. But dinnertime? Feijoada (a Brazilian black bean stew) is HEAVENLY and so full of flavor. Everything we've had has been wonderful, and the owner always makes us feel at home. The pastries (especially the natas) are incredible too. WHY ARE WE SO LUCKY???? Love this place!!!

Pastel de nata

By Jerry P |

Overall a five star. Where are you going to find pastries like natas and other great sweet pastries. Very quaint location, and does serve savory dishes as well. Hard to find, located in the back area, Parking even further back, behind the restaurant or meter. Don't forget you can take our a box of treats for home use.

Horriblw food and service

By Katherine Z |

My husband and I were in the mood for some great Portuguese bacalhau. My dish had lots of onions eggs and no codfish at all. My husband's codfish looked and smelled old. Our shrimp appetizer came cold and served at the same time as the main dishes. Obviously the owner doesnt care able ut the qualifying ty of the food he serves. Stay away and save your money!!!

Nice pastel de nata

By ricardofr |

I am expert In Portuguese food and I was very impressed with the quality of the pasteis de nata were very good and taste like Portuguese ones. The cod fish cakes were pretty good, the potatoes should be mash potato not kind in small pieces, on the end were pretty good... The rissois were a desapointement, nothing like a rissol.... I was expecting a bechamel souce and sherimps.... I will be back if I have a chance!

$25 gift certificate for a heat stroke!!

By Renee |

Would a $25 gift certificate be enough for a heat stroke and leaving after a 75 minute wait for food? Let me add that it’s Mother’s Day! After making reservations 2 weeks in advance, we were told that the party in front of us wasn’t leaving and we were seated outside - no problem except it was over 100 degrees outside, and we came for our first meal of the day, on Mother’s Day. After asking repeatedly to be moved inside or at least on the patio that had fans, the answer was we’ll try, but nothing happened. We were so hot, coupled with no food for way over an hour, I got a heat stroke. I had to keep going inside because I was so dizzy. We kept asking for our food, but after 75 minutes I felt like I was going to faint, so we had to leave. We paid the check which was $160 - and I called to speak to the owner who explained that they were extremely short staffed because two waiters didn’t make it. Problem was that nothing was communicated to us, and we were not given the choice to wait or not wait, as most restaurants tell you in advance if they are short staffed. The owner, Fatima, was very apologetic and asked what she can do. I said that since I didn’t end up having food and ended up in bed all Mother’s Day because of the heat stole, I would appreciate a refund. Fatima asked to send her the receipt, and the she disappeared. After following up by phone and email multiple times, she offered me a $25 gift certificate!!!! I couldn’t even find the words I was so insulted. The same way she made me wait and gave me false hopes she would make this situation right, is the same way she treated us on Mother’s Day. I will never return to this restaurant and am disgusted with the owner. Zero accountability for treating her customers well and actually standing by her word to make the situation right. Avoid!

Interesting food, very knowledgeable staff

By maryinseattle |

5 of us met here for a celebratory dinner and had a lovely time. Our waitress was very patient and explained all the dishes. We shared appetizers and I had the pork, potato and clam dish which was wonderful. Most everyone else was as pleased. The woman behind the pastry counter also took lots of time to explain all our choices. If I lived in the area, would be happy to go back.

Sweet and delightful

By Salvador D |

Having visited Lisbon, Portugal, I thought I'd give this place a chance in LA, since I enjoyed the Portugal culinary experience so much. The restaurant keeps a very nice and inviting ambience, and the first thing I noticed when I walked in is that it was very clean. The staff is friendly and very attentive. They were quick to offer me coffee and pastries which is what brought me in, in the first place. Their coffee is strong and dark, but yet smooth at the same time. Very delicious! The pastries are amazingly fresh. I've tried everything they offer, and it is hard to give you a recommendation for what's best, but I can tell you that they make an outstanding nata. I order one every time I'm there (Pic included. ) For me The place has all the qualities to bring my mother there. It has also become one of her favorite restaurants. She usually raves about what every she orders. And so I try to take her there once a week because it makes her happy. They also carry daily specials which are very affordable ($10.00) per dish. I'd say you try their Carne Estufada's on Thursdays, my favorite. Overall, I think you'll be very satisfy with the service and the menu.

Oh the pasteries

By Barbara R |

On Ventura Blvd i Studio City tucked away in an older building is a wonderful little restaurant that specializes in luscious pasteries. You have to gry it

Excellent for breakfast or lunch

By ExperiencedTravelers |

This is a small restaurant, but they have an extensive menu. Breakfasts are terrific, with a wide variety of pancakes and such. The crepes were just O.K., but the sandwich was also excellent. Service was nothing special, but the pastries to go, while a bit overpriced, are worth it.

Americanized Portuguese food...

By Bravia_101 |

This tastes nothing like the Portuguese food I've grow up with or I have had during my travels to Portugal and its islands. I was very disappointed with the main dishes. The only thing that I like was the Natas...

It smells heavenly when you walk in

By taxwriter |

We tried several pastries. Haven't finished them all yet. The Natas (egg custard) truly are special. The chocolate tower (?) was disappointing. She said the filling was dark chocolate and some other things, including marzipan (my favorite). Didn't taste any of that. Looking forward to the other pastries today.

Just Like Home

By Robert S |

Being of Portuguese descend I had to try it...Did not Disappoint. The Beef a Casa is just Awesome, the fries even better. Its small and very cozy,I just loved the place. If you get there you wont be disappointed, just remember to have the namesake pastry Nata's Cupcake. Fantastic, every time I'm in LA this is a must.

A Delicious Taste Of Portugal

By Moe B |

Natas Pastries and Cafe in Sherman Oaks is the outstanding Portuguese bakery & café in Los Angeles. Tucked away in the corner of a small retail mall it's easy to miss so you have to make a little bit of an effort to find it, but it's well worth the hunt. The place is open on the weekends for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The emphasis, obviously, is on Portuguese dishes with everything from eggs to pancakes, salads to sandwiches, and major entrees. There were three of us for lunch this time. My sister had the caprese salad, my wife had the vegetarian wrap, and I had a club sandwich with a Portuguese bock beer to slake my thirst. In the past, we've had fish and poultry dishes, feijoada, omelettes, French toast, and we have never been disappointed. And as server Lisa (she is really helpful) says, leave room for dessert: the pastries are delicious. Go for the creamy bola de Berlin, the house specialty nata (creme brulee in a puff pastry shell), or any of the dozens of other wicked selections.

Been coming here for several years. Good food. Pleasant servers . Good value and close to home! Love their olives and bread . Coffee good, their specialty pastries are very good!

Excellent

By Robert L |

This was my first experience at Natas Pastries. It’s a small, quaint place tucked away in the corner of a two-story mini-shopping center. To make it real simple, Casa Vega Mexican Restaurant is on the northwest corner of Fulton and Ventura. Right next door is Natas Pastries. Not much parking space in front, but there are more places in back. I ordered a 3-egg omelet on a croissant with spicy Portuguese sausage and tomatoes and coffee. It was excellent. So was the service (thanks to Erin). I am going to return to Natas soon to try the other items on the menu, not to mention those beautiful, mouth-watering pastries.

A taste of Portugal

By SushPower |

I have been looking for some Portuguese food since I left Portugal back in 1997 and on my trip to L.A, I found one during my online search. Their menu had many portuguese entree's that I remembered. My favorite was Bacalhau Com Natas followed by Bacalhau al Braz and Feijoada. Since I could only eat one, I had the Bacalahau com natas. Their sauce was different than what I was used to as my portuguese friends used a white cream sauce but this one was pretty good as well. Small little restaurant that also sells many pastries as well. Well worth a try if you're in the neighborhood.

Delightful Portuguese surprise

By Laurie R |

Friends invited us for dinner at Natas the other night. None of us had eaten there or had Portuguese food before and we were looking forward to a new eating adventure. We walked into this small establishment and we immediately stood before display cases of the most mouthwatering pastries! I didn't see any tables to sit down to have dinner probably because I couldn't stop devouring with my eyes these wonderful looking pastries. A young lady named Melody took us through a doorway where there were around ten tables. Very cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Melody and Maria helped us with deciding what to eat. They both were friendly and had great smiles which made us feel right at home. It was a Monday evening and almost all the tables were filled. I first ordered Sopa de Pedra which was a Portuguese thick vegetable soup made with at least ten different vegetables. So good! I enjoyed my baked salmon with homemade mashed potatoes, steamed spinach and asparagus with a wine/lemon sauce while two others loved their caldeirada which was a seafood stew with sea bass, salmon, cod, shrimp, clams and mussels over rice. Our other friend had the Portuguese stew which was also delicious. The portion size on all the dishes were large. Even though we were full, we had to have some of their pastries for dessert. Everything was delicious and made with such care. We definitely will return to this hidden gem.

One of our favorite restaurants!

By dow47 |

We have visited Natas for a number of years each time we are in the Sherman Oaks area. We had our son's wedding rehearsal dinner there several years ago, and it was perfect for our small group. My most recent visit to Natas was in July 2016 for several meals. We enjoy the soup, daily specials and pastries, of course. We are not from Portugal, but have spent many holidays and family celebrations with our Portuguese friends, and we find the food to be of good, dependable quality and similar to what was prepared many times for us over the years in our homes.

A trip to Portugal

Only a small place but the ambiance is very nice and elegant. Good food and not too much crowded when we got there. The owner is very friendly. Don't forget to get their signature natas!

Fantastic Breakfast

By Daniel M |

We stopped by this place with our son for breakfast. No waiting, great service and fantastic food. Everything was cooked perfect, with nice helpings and excellent presentation. The coffee was very good and they kept it flowing. Though, this may not be the least expensive place to eat. It is well worth the price, and that was obvious by all the patrons appeared to be the locals. This is a gem if you are looking for a great meal away from the crowd.

Such a gem

By Nigel F |

We went here yesterday evening for the first time and was extremely surprised. The service was excellent with full explanation if needed and the food was extremely delicious. Not a complicated menu but with plenty of choice. Wine list was very reasonable with a few good Portuguese wines on it, not always easy to get in LA.

Great Breakfast and pastries

By SNAFU23 |

My wife, who eats here often, took me to breakfast in May 2016, and we both had a delicious meal. Natas is located on the corner of Ventura Blvd and Fulton Ave. In a corner of a small two story business front. Parking is free in the very small parking lot, there is also metered parking on Ventura Blvd, and free street parking on Fulton Ave. The restaurant is nicely decorated with what looks like to me a light blue French Country provincial decor. It was very relaxing. They offer both indoor dining and outside covered patio dining. The service was excellent, friendly and very attentive. The breakfast was delicious, fresh, and the portion size was generous. Everything both my wife and I ordered was very good. The price was very reasonable for the quality and portion size. Next to the register is a large very tempting pasty display case filled with awesome looking and I'm sure tasting pastries and deserts. I'm looking forward to having breakfast here again, and would recommend this restaurant to all of my family and friends.

Lovely outpost of Portuguese food in LA.

By Dr K |

As a local and occasional visitor to natas, I am very happy to share info and encourage patronage. The food is good however the real treat are the pastries. Authentic Portuguese pastries which are lovely. I would recommend coming for coffee and pastry so you have enough room to try several.

Wonderful desserts in Studio City

By maadiman47 |

This cafe has both dine in and take out options. We did the latter and brought home some amazing Portuguese like pastries which were fresh and tasty. Cafe had quite a number of offerings to choose from and I highly recommend their specialty pastries--the tarts, the cookies and the cakes were so good. Dessert menu, which we didn't try, looked amazing as well. Authentic and fresh in the valley.

Delicious Authentic Portuguese Fine Dining

By Stacie Surabian |

We threw our friend a surprise birthday dinner here on Saturday night and it was out of this world! The food was scrumptious and the delicious Portuguese wine was flowing! The owner Fatima was on site and attended to our every need! Highly recommend this restaurant for an authentic European dining experience!

delicious Portugese food

By verda |

We used a groupon for 4 perople and enjoyed a great bottle of wine, sangria, cheese, olive and sausage appetiezer, with bread. We had the bacon wrapped shrimp, octopus and pork and clam stew for dinner. The cheese, olives and sausage were all delicious with the sliced bread and went well with our wine. The shrimp came with a large portion of rice cooked

Excellent service and food

By Alycia602 |

This is a small quaint Portuguese restaurant on a busy street. They have a lot of fish dishes but there is plenty to choose from if you do not eat fish. Their chicken madeira, like chicken marsala was very tasty. The bacon wrapped shrimp and saffron rice was also excellent. Then there is a small bakery with some delicious pastries as well. I thought it odd that the asparagus with the chicken only had two pieces. There was no real vegetable other than salad. The fresh bread was also very good. They also served some olives with the bread that were good. I would go back. We used a groupon which made it a little more affordable.

Portugese cafe & restaurant near the Galleria

By larry g |

For a change of pace we met family members for breakfast at Natas this morning .It was our first visit to this establishment located in a small strip mall with some limited off street free parking . The menu is quite varied .You can order omelets to pancakes waffles and crepes for breakfast. They also serve lunch and dinner. If you have not dined in Portugal this might provide an opportunity to try traditional Portugese entrees such as Feijoada or Empadao. The next time we are near the Sherman Oaks Galleria off the 405/101 we will try out their lunch or dinner choices. selections.

Natas Pastries

When I first moved to LA 6 years ago I greatly missed some things about the east coast. To my amazement in Sherman Oaks I saw the sign for Natas. Went in for dinner and they have never ever disappointed me.

Nice Little Cafe And Bakery- Slice Of Lisbon In LA

By bccrab |

Having just returned from a trip to Lisbon I was dying to try this place to see how it measured up. It was a great surprise. The small cafe has a fine selection of Portuguese dishes. I had the Bacalhau with potatoes and onions and it was delicious. Portions are huge and can easily be shared. The appetizers of cheese, olives and sausages were wonderful. Then to top it off on the way out we bought a nice selection of pastries from the bakery to bring home. The servers were very sweet. Service was both friendly and efficient. We had a short chat with the owner as well. Decorations are nice enough to make you think you are in a cafe in Lisbon. Not fancy, very casual with some outdoor seating as well. Really glad we came and will definitely be back.

Not just pastries

By Alycia602 |

I have been here many times for the Portuguese pastries and they are excellent. I recently went to dinner and the service was excellent and very accommodating. I had the Madeira chicken and it was very good. My boyfriend had a steak that he thoroughly enjoyed. I would recommend trying this little known spot. They also have breakfast and lunch but I have not tried that yet, but plan to.

Great Portuguese pastries

By TheCanadianNavigator |

It was a pleasure to find a place with Portuguese pastries near our hotel. The pastel de nata & Berlim donuts are really good!

Still worth it. Great service. I was very disappointed with the quality of the cod. It wasn't Ghadus Morhua.

By Emilia P |

Razoável. I was disappointed with the quality of the cod. It wasn't dead years. It was a cheaper type. Great service.

Exotic Cuisine - Local Flavor

By Patrick B |

My son was anxious for me to try this Portuguese cuisine - having been here a year ago on a recommendation from friends in Studio City. Don't let the name fool you. This is both a neighborhood cafe serving an extensive selection of authentic dishes and a bakery with a traffic stopping display case. The food was quite good, the service was excellent, and the prices were extremely reasonable. A trip to Lisbon would be nice some day - but in the meantime, for the flavor of Lisbon in a local setting, I would give this a try.

Authentic Portugese Food

By GoncalvesJM |

As a 1st generation Portuguese-American I have been to Portugal many times and often crave the real authentic cuisine here at home. Other than my Dad or grandmothers cooking, Natas is the next best thing. It is very much worth the drive from San Diego to Sherman Oaks for some pastries because I just can't seem to find the right ingredients to make them taste like Portugal and Natas does! Anytime I am within an hour drive I try to make my way there for lunch/dinner/snack and brin home a box of yummy, authentic Portuguese pastries. So good! Now if they would only open another location in San Diego.... :)

Delicious Surprise in the Valley!

By Patricia S |

My husband and I had a very generous gift certificate for this Portuguese bakery/restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. We loved our time in Portugal years ago and enjoy Portuguese food, so this was a particularly enjoyable meal for us. Tucked into a small strip mall, Natas has a lovely bakery display as you enter. The dinning room is small, but cozy and very comfortable. The menu is extensive; the wine list small, but offers a great sampling of red and white Portuguese wines. We shared a large, delicious appetizer of grilled sausage, pickled vegetables and tiny olives: very spicy but wonderful. I had a salt cod in cream sauce, while my husband had the house steak with a peppercorn sauce. I would have liked more cod in my dish--it was a bit unbalanced, but the cream sauce with onions and potatoes was authentic and very flavorful. The steak was perfectly cooked and the sauce was excellent--it came with good homemade fries. The house red wine was very good and was perfect with the fish; the house white was sweet but made for a refreshing aperitif. We had the house "natas"--custard-filled puff pastry shells. They were fantastic: rich, with a nice balance of creamy custard and crisp pastry. It was a wonderful meal!

Total Disappointment

By worldtraveler273 |

I have a co-worker who is Portuguese who swears by this place, so when I saw a Groupon come up for a meal at this restaurant I bought a deal for four and we headed out the 30 mile drive to Sherman Oaks for what I thought would be a treat for my family. Be warned, it is a street parking situation which on a Saturday night on Ventura Blvd is next to non-existent. Eventually we found a spot and wandered in. Honestly this is more of a pastry shop but despite the small location, the decor is quaint and the pride of Portuguese heritage is quite endearing. Unfortunately, the staff don't have the owner's perspective - not professional servers, unable to pronounce the Portuguese menu items and didn't have the ability to sell the menu. The food was worse, really uninspired - we all chose different items and had the same reaction. Everything was so-so. The only redeeming quality of the evening were the pastries we purchased as we were leaving - they were delicious!

Breakfast for One

By Jessica L |

What a wonderful place. The service was prompt and friendly. I built my own scramble, which was so so. I should have gotten pancakes or crepes. But they deserve 5 stars for the atmosphere and attitude. My cup of coffee never went empty and was hot and strong, just how it should be. The decor is very warm and welcoming. The ladies who work there were very smiley. They wore little chefs hats. It is a little touch that adds to the experience. On my way out I spent way too much on 2 boxes of pastries, just couldn't help myself. I though some of the baked goods were overpriced but I understand the need to be price competitive for a little joint like Natas. I can't wait to come back with friends and family.

Trip from Florida to California with Granddaughters

By Saylynn |

I just fell into this restaurant because it was close to where I was staying and I was looking for breakfast. Briefly, parking was a bit of a challenge. We were seated right away by a very polite young man. The atmosphere was absolutely authentic and pleasant. I loved the tile on the wall. Breakfast was very good and plentiful. Maybe the omelette was a bit over cooked. I would like to return to try their dinner menu.

Amazing Staff and delicious pastery!

By Jo F |

Very kind service and delicious pastery. The main food was also very good! Nice dinner night with my portuguese family.

Great Portuguese Balery & Cafe

By Richard S |

Unique cafe & bakery. Very good Portuguese food and delicious pastries. If you'd like a taste of Portugal, try this place out. It's small with a great following. They sometimes offer discount coupons and can be found on Groupon. I've been there several times and tried a different entree each time. Friendly service with great knowledge of their Portuguese dishes. Try to save room for desert or take home some of their delicious pastries. Even their sandwiches are great!

Terrific for breakfast - the french toast is popular for a reason

By ro953 |

We actually found this by searching Trip Advisor. I ordered their french toast - the bread is sliced very thick, and you would think it would be dense - but it was the lightest french toast I've ever had. My wife and son had eggs - which were "ok" - but the accompanying pancakes were terrific. Suggest staying with the pastries, pancakes, waffles and french toast. They also serve their lunch menu during breakfast hours. We were here on a Sunday morning (9:30am) - we were expecting long lines, but got lucky and were seated right away. I understand usually there are long lines waiting for a table on weekends. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area.

Just like the bistro pastries on Crystal Cruises!

By SCOBAR123 |

Every day at 11 AM on Crystal cruises a tray of Portuguese custard cups is served. Only one tray. I was there at 11 AM for 10 straight days. By accident I was delighted to find that this pastry shop makes the same delicious custard cups as well as many other pastries ---and even serves dinner!

Beautiful interior and wonderful pastries and....

By Watersprite91 |

most of the staff here are happy to make really towering foam on your cappacino, yum! The signature pastries, the natas, are very special as custard is amazing. It is equally good in the berry tarts. The staff are very special, they like remembering you and your preferences so Natas easily becomes a favorite neighborhood hangout. The owner, Fatima is truly delightful . The chef is very accommodating in fixing his amazing breakfast potatoes with minimal rosemary (which I could live without) and cooking omelets to your preference.

A wonderfully authentic Portuguese cafe for foodies

By California Travlz |

Natas Portuguese Pastries is a cafe that has been blooming over the years... from it's tiny spot, that was easily missed....to such a beautiful and delicious breath of fresh air in the Valley. I have always been impressed with the level of quality and variety of their menu, as well as the pride they put into everything they do. It is always a treat to be able to stop by this little hideaway when I'm visiting Los Angeles. How I found this place? It's next door to one of the best late night Mexican Restaurants in the Valley - the landmark, Casa Vega. (It's akin to El Coyote on Melrose in Los Angeles.) After having lunch there for the first time, we were able to finally have a look inside Natas during normal business hours and found a wonderland of tasty sweets and treats. A must for foodies!
