Great for groups; good, reliable food options; reasonably priced

By MO6686 |

Went here last week with a large group. The restaurant was very accommodating of our reservation request. The place was relatively empty on a Thursday evening, which was a bit surprising. Service was efficient and friendly. Restaurant atmosphere was cozy and not too noisy. Good, pub-esque food at a reasonable price point. Slightly expensive drinks but guess that's pretty standard for Old City Philly! Overall would recommend this spot. (Had the salmon and thought it was really good if you're looking for a food rec!)

Skimpy cheese steak but ok

By Mickey |

I had a salad and the cheese steak. The salad was fresh. The cheese steak sandwich was just ok but was a little skimpy on the steak compared to other cheese steaks offered in the area. They have a good selection of brews and the service was friendly and quick. The restaurant is very rustic. I probably would not eat here again.

Great burgers

By Beachlover046 |

One of Phillys hidden gems! Funcky décor, but really good service levels. Beer selection OK, bartenders very engaged with clients

Brunch

By katiea714 |

We went with a group of friends, some who live down the street, for brunch on a Sunday morning. We had a great time eating, drinking, and chatting. The food was tasty, the waiter was great.

Not a fan

By Arzie823 |

The building and decor is awesome. We went for brunch and although there was 12 in our party the service was very slow. They offered nothing on the table to snack on while you wait for your food. The menu is pretty limited and is also the same for lunch and dinner. We ordered two (2) appetizers that took forever to come out and they were just fruit and cheese platters, no cooking needed. Our meal finally arrived and everyone got what they ordered, but it wasn't worth the long wait.

Affordable, Incredible, Great Atmosphere

By amgovern |

National Mechanics is classic Pub-with a twist, as it is housed in the National Mechanics building in the Old City of Philadelphia. We came there for lunch---on an incredibly hot day after doing a scavenger hunt. Our waiter kept the waters coming, and took the time to answer all the questions we had about the building...and even the glasses. I ordered the Maryland Benedict, my son a Turkey Burger..spouse a hamburger and we were all thrilled with our choices. Substitutions could be made for the incredible, done to perfection steak fries...and had a truly GREAT, fresh side salad. Although we could not drink (too hot and dehydrated) this is definitely a bar that stocks some pretty incredible brands as well as the "mixers". We really should have taken the time to check out the pyramid of mixers at the bar that was out for brunch...Even the background music Cat Stevens/James Taylor was relaxing. At the time we were there it seemed to be an even mix of coupeles and singles...we may have been the only family group in the Bar and Restaurant.

Great Lunch!

By WPB6969 |

What a great find, in an interesting and different setting. Great food/drinks with friendly service. The best turkey burger I've had. Will be back.

A great bolthole

By TravellinTomS |

Hidden away on 3rd St this quality establishment offers a great selection of craft beerd. Great service from friendly staff and a good relaxed atmosphere. The beer selection and varied food menu make it an obvious choice when in the area. Particularly welcome in the hot sumer for a nice relaxed lunch!

Strange name, great restaurant

By Bertfvw |

Good food, excellent service and fair prices. A cozy restaurant in an old bank. We had a great evening.

Worth a Visit

By baz_0812 |

Popped in here while down checking out Mac's Tavern and it turned out to be the better option. Decent food and selection of drinks and good atmosphere in the place. I'd recommend the plantain chips with guacamole dip to anyone.

Cool place

By Urius |

National Mechanics is better than average, but does lack a little extra something. I was there on the weekend nights when the dance floor opens up. The vibe is cool, people are looking to dance and drink. The beer selection isn't fantastic but some local crafts allows for the beer snobs to survive. The music is fluctuating, from pop stuff to more eclectic dance music. Crowd is pretty diverse, no way to generalize it. The best part is the building and interior. It's an old bank and church, with the church pews surviving to be used as seats at the tables. The mix of the bar with stools and dance floor adjacent allows for a great setup to switch between drinking and dancing. The concept of this establishment is rather enjoyable. I have never eaten here or patronized during weekdays when the dance floor is filled with tables for eating. I can't say what the vibe is as a restaurant. As a club/bar I would recommend for weekends.

Appetizers Delicious

By Terry K |

First time in Philly and upon recommendation from hotel personnel ended up here and not disappointed. Only had appetizers but they were delicious. Sliders and Mac and Cheese both very good. We then splurged for dessert and went for creme brûlée which was out of this world. Some of the very best. Our waitress was delightful. Definitely would recommend to locals and tourists.

Weekend Brunch

By RSN31 |

We stumbled across this place while searching for some food on our walk to the Betsy Ross House and were happy to find a restaurant midday that was serving brunch/breakfast options since we'd had a quick breakfast on the run. So the menu was a very welcome option. The server was very nice but overall service seemed a little slow and the restaurant really wasn't that busy. He wasn't very efficient and it was a good 20+ minutes before he even took our order although he had been by the table a few times. The food was okay. Quirky décor in a converted bank.

Up the Steps to a Great Burger!

By Another-MO-Traveler |

We stopped in for lunch and had a great burger. It was large enough for 2 people and the bun they served was worth the trip up the steps! The building was worth seeing as well...the seating at the booths were old church pews and the bar was a piece of art work. Go get a great burger and enjoy the history of the building. The wait staff are full of great little stories about the history of the building and are very friendly.

terrific spot!

By dale08234 |

2 ladies of a certain age - Baby Boomers - found this place on Friday night at about 5:30 pm when the locals and the after-work crowd had filled the place. We were seated quickly and served promptly. Yes it was noisy but oh so vibrant! Decent pricing and good food in a boisterous atmosphere and in a terrific building. I highly recommend it as long as you don't drag little kids into it at that time or expect quiet. The crowd was mostly 20-30 somethings yet we of a certain age felt fine there - not at all uncomfortable.

Lively bar with good pub food

By Timcat42 |

Characterful old town bar/pub in a converted old bank building, with good inexpensive American pub food and craft beer. The service is good and the staff are cheery. A great place to end up for a beer or two and a burger after a day out in the old town/city.

Best Egg Scramble

By Terri e |

A group of us stopped in on Saturday after visiting a museum. We were seated right away by a friendly hostess and server. The food was excellent, Veggie burger, National burger, fish and chips and an egg scramble. I choose 3 different types of cheese and bacon for the egg scramble. Best one I've ever eaten. They also offer a make your own Bloody Mary bar. We weren't drinking that day but it sure sounded good.

Funky fun flavorful food

By minookajoe |

Walked by often. Finally went inside. Crowded thursday. Offering post primary election civics program. Happy to see so many 20 somethings interested. Interesting, tasty veggie burger. Good sliders. Crisp chilled wines frim good selection. Not your momma's decor. Relaxed funk with great servers. Will go again!

Wow!

By Just Me |

Just a great place. Not over priced, cool environment, and amazing service. The mac and cheese is A+, and the brew selection is better than usual.

Average Food in a Fun Setting

By Sheila S |

We all know that Saturday night in Center City is hopping, so holding tickets for an 8PM performance at the Kimmel kind of dictated coming to town early for dinner. Happened to find a Groupon for this place and the description of the building made it sound interesting. I'd been warned that it's noisey, which was quickly confirmed when I called to make reservations. (There's only a small number of boths and a handful of long tables.) But the noise was from everyone having fun and it was contagious! Even our server and the hostess were bubbly! I agree with dream_genie who said it's probably best to stick with bar fare at a place like this. Both of us ordered the salmon and were disappointed, except for the cream sauce which topped it. We shared a decadent chocolate dessert and left satisfied, but won't return. However, ample kiosk parking all around was a plus and we did arrive early for our concert. Not a bad evening at all.

Unbelievably loud!

By Ken |

This would have received a higher rating if I could have just heard myself think! We went here on our first night in Philly; it was within walking distance of our hotel and had been recommended to us. If we had known it was a popular hotspot on a Saturday night, we wouldn't have gone anywhere near it. The service was good and friendly, the food was very good, but the noise level was an assault to the senses. The DJ hadn't even started yet!

Friendly

By MikeM22rugger |

The staff was incredible, the pretzel was huge and really good. They had a pretty decent beer selection. It was a really nice place to hang out. Definitely look forward to stopping by

Drinks, service, and the Bloody Mary bar!

By FRDesigns |

Stopped in for an early dinner and drinks and ran into the end of the Bloody Mary bar which was delicious! If you're a fan of this drink find out when they do it and give it a try, worth the wait. Food was excellent, we got a couple apps, and split an entree suggested by our friendly wait staff. Even with a busy bar, we were never looking for water or anything! Will be making another stop to see the Mechanic again!

We appreciate everything!

By Stephane L |

We found another place (The Bourse), but it was closed. So we found this place through Google search. And we were happy to find it. The food was good, my girlfriend had the poutine, it was very good. We know what we're talking about when we talk about poutine, we're from Quebec where the first poutine was served in Warwick. The atmosphere was great and our waitress was very friendly to us. Best dining experience in Philadelphia in our case.

Funky Decor, Good Beers

By Grant K |

We visited National Mechanics after dinner in Old City. There are no TVs on the walls which I personally think is a great thing because it forces all the guests to commingle rather than stare blankly at screens. The decor is really funky (stuffed dog with Christmas lights?). Beer selection is good. We would return back for sure.

Dive Bar with Mediocre Food

By redmondrovers |

While the space is interesting, the general condition of the bar and restaurant is that of a dive, and it really projects an unclean appearance too well. Two of us had the burger with an egg. Both of us agreed it was very average. One of the girls had a salad with salmon added. It was overdone and dry. My son had the chicken sandwich which he said was ok. I thought with such a limited menu, everything should be spot on food-wise, and it wasn't. However the staff was friendly and efficient which was a bonus. And the drinks were fine, except the bloody Mary's are tiny. Would try elsewhere next visit to Philadelphia.

Brunch

By Dusa77 |

Food wasn't great, service was ... Lets say more training needed. On a positive note the decorr was interesting

Good food, hard quiz....

By Thehappysnowman |

Had a really nice night at the Mechanics B&R. Service was good and friendly. Split the order of food so that the starters and mains didn't come too close together and allowed us to digest the food in comfort. Quiz on Weds night was pretty tough but enjoyable.

Not Bad; Nothing Special

By ISC624 |

Dinner and drinks; the food and drinks were average. The server was very good; regularly checking to see if we needed anything else. The noise level, music and background, was enough to make normal conversation difficult.

Fun Place Good Food

By jwkeebs |

This bar has a lot of character. They offer a great food menu to accompany your beverages. I enjoyed the atmosphere and people watching

Excellent staff

By Votenochains |

Stopped in here for quick bite. Very friendly staff and nice beer selection. Got the grilled veggi salad which was scarce on grilled veggies mostly a bunch of wonderfully fresh spinach leaves. Just wasn’t worth the price. Husband got ribeye steak sandwich which had excellent flavors though very small portion. Delicious fries!

Swing and a miss

By Flushing G |

Stopped in for late Sunday lunch. Resto is in old bank building, which is cool; up an old stone staircase. Service was good. Decent selection of beers on tap. We ordered pints. Laura got a burger. I ordered a lamb burger; it was overwhelmed by a huge bready bun which took away from a mediocre taste. I wouldn't go back; Philly has so many choices. I can't recommend it in good conscience.

Terrific place for lunch

By EIKOOC |

The restaurant is within the historic district and you´ll welcome the chance for a tasty lunch, a drink and keep with a historic atmosphere. Patrick gave us the history of the restaurant and we appreciated his take on Philly cheesesteaks. Their cheesesteak was delicious and the crunchy chicken salad was excellent. You won´t regret dining there.

Thanks, Fellow Trip Advisors!

By 523sandrao |

Per other great reviews, we made sure to enjoy our first happy hour and dinner of the vacation at National Mechanics. Great service, location, happy hour specials, and ambiance! Glad we made it!

Enjoyable in Old City

By Scott A |

Thoroughly enjoyable lunch spot with a friend. Burgers were good, steak fries crispy and the craft beer cold. Kudos for having a beer from Speakeasy Brewing on tap!

Vibe Cool, Service Slow

By alehman85 |

Took about 15 minutes before our waitress came over and the place was not that busy. That continued to be the case through our meal. No refills until I asked when we got our check. Food was great. I got the hummus and my son had a burger.

Delicious!

By Thelmadee |

We heard the food was excellent but the service was lacking, We found both food AND service exceeded our expectations!

Good Food with interesting atmosphere

By mariagsavino |

My group enjoyed a good meal, with excellent staff, and interesting decor. I would recommend it, if you have time for a sit down lunch, but don't want to spend hours sitting around.

Quizzo & Co.

By Sarah B |

Come around for a round of the popular local bar game 'quizzo', have some food and a drink to get ready for the karaoke session. There's always something going on, here... You won't be bored at the National Mechanics.

Great experience in a unique decor

By Marc G |

This restaurant is located in an ancient bank building. Good food and beer selection. The food was good an abondant, the cuisine a little crative (mix osso buco with burgers, pastas, and classic pub meals, with home beer based sauces). We were sitting in old church benches and the wait staff attentive. I would definately go again.

No pepper ...no problem

By jean m |

So who has pepper and gluten allergies? My guest from Buffalo. No problem chef created a special burger just for her. Then my friend a treated me to a climb up the steep stairs in Independence hall. Who said being a tour guide is fun? But my 🍔was seasoned with delicious stuff and a bun. Our server was awesome!

Very Nice place

By Fabrizio C |

Step in and you will enjoy a lovely and friendly atmosphere. A tasty meal of American cousine will be serverd on wooden church banks. It really deserves a visit.

This place has a personality all its own

By Eva L |

We found great reviews for this restaurant and decided to try it out for ourselves. Boy, we sure we're not disappointed. From the decor to the staff, it was such a unique experience. The building itself is historic and was to be appreciated but the low lighting and the breeze blowing in through the large open window gave the entire meal ambiance. The food was great. The service was quick. We felt like we were the only people in the restaurant. Even the restrooms were cool. I know that sounds weird but you have to go and experience it for yourself. I look forward to going back again.

Really great!

By cellofool |

Recommended by the peeps at the Ben Franklin Museum and right around the corner. This was an old church converted Tao a bar and eatery. The benches are old pews. The booth tables are made from old weathered beams. Fresh orchids and plants adorn the Windows. The food is EXCELLENT. A person coming out as I was going in confirmed this as well. A bit loud. Nice bathroom.

Quick bite to eat.

By T M |

Stepping into this cool dark space was like traveling back in time. We couldn’t tell if this space was formerly a church, a post office, or a bank. My husband and I were looking for a quick lunch. I ordered the guacamole toast and my husband got the Cobb salad. It was a delicious lunch with an adorable server named Dorothy. She was so kind and welcoming. It seems like a great place to people watch as well.

Good Food, Great Drinks, Impressive Building

By 15mmm |

I visited National Mechanics Bar as a stop off in Philadelphia sightseeing. It offered a wonderfully impressive building that still gave a neighborhood bar feel even while being deep in tourist areas. Fish tacos were on special and were delicious and the draft beer selection was great for a hot summer day. I would definitely visit again.

My new favorite bar

By schmayla98 |

A friend and I visited this place on a rainy Saturday around 5:30pm. The interior makes you feel like you are in a European bar. We ordered a variety of cocktails, all of which were amazing and made by a very attentive staff of mixologists. The appetizers we ordered were very good as well. If I were a local, this bar would be my spot.

Nice little bar.

By countryfried81 |

I asked the valet at my hotel for a good pub and he pointed me in the direction of the National Mechanics bar. The décor was kind of strange, the only Mechanic-y type thing I saw was springs around the lightbulbs. Anyway the bar girl suggested the lamb burger, and it was Great!!! This thing was bursting with flavor and had a taziki sauce on it that just set it off. The steak fries were also a great compliment. The Guinness pour was a little too fast, but I'm used to it.

Good music, ok food.

By Ericka S |

Great atmosphere. We went to eat dinner on a Friday night at 10pm and was originally seated at a high boy table. Chairs were uncomfortable so we asked to be moved to a booth. Booth seating is SUPER comfy, lots of room. Music was great, old school hip hop, pop, etc... live DJ was there that night. The drink "snack on the beach" I'm pretty sure that's the name was INSANE!!! so delicious you didn't realize you were drinking alcohol.. I'm not a big drinker as I don't like the way it tastes, but this was just amazing. Would go back just for that drink. Food was ok. Got a burger which was good. Got nachos as an app and I'm pretty sure the guacamole was maybe not good or something because I was sick the rest of the night. Me and hubby both ordered some exact foods and drinks and he didn't get sick. The only thing different that I ate was guacamole. I would stay away from the nachos and you will have an amazing time. Place has a lot of stairs in the front of the building so if ur a high heels kind of gal, keep that in mind for when your leaving and tend to not have the best balance when drinks and heels are mixed. Overall a good time, would go back, I would just avoid the nachos next time!

Perfect local atmosphere and great food

By Optimist Doc |

A friend and I were looking for a place with some local atmosphere to eat brunch or lunch before a basketball game when we happened to walk by National Mechanics. They had live music, great food -- really great food. The server was friendly and funny. Highly recommend.

A Nice Surprise!

By Mel_S128 |

The name confused me a little, but the food was delicious! The place is pretty neat - a very old converted church. The noise level was pretty high, although the place was not very crowded. But the food was well worth it!

Beautiful Bar with good beer and good cheer!

By drsoozie |

We dropped in for a late afternoon beer. We picked a great place. It is a beautiful bar complete with stained glass windows and wonderful pews at the tables. Great happy hour prices, along with plentiful beers to choose from. Our server was delightfully entertaining and helpful! We had such a great time we stayed for a second round before we walked back to our apt. Go and you will have a great time! Karaoke on Tuesday nights for those so inclined.

Dinner in Philadelphia

By Cinzia C |

Superb local, pub style, very kind staff, the American cuisine we found good, Fast Service

Wandered about

By Girlymurley |

Found awesome! Great friendly staff, cool venue, and the food was amazing. Husband got the lamb burger. I got the Guinness poutine. Who doesn’t like a bowl of gravy and cheese?! AmIright! Watermelon beer was tangy and perfect in the heat wave.

Good Food, Good Drinks, Good Atomosphere

By Rob P |

Very cool older building, which most of downtown is I have been noticing. The service is great and people are very friendly. Menu isn't huge, but food it very good. Totally worth a stop if you are in the area.

Great atmoshpere to hang out and enjoy good food in old Philly

By Globetrotter |

Very nice place to hang out with friends, enjoy drinks and the rather upscale culinary dishes that Mechanics put on their menus. And to certain times, find delight in live music from local bands. Just a fun place to be, reinforced by a fantastic staff!

Lively Place

By rleNewEngland |

We were staying around the corner and arrived at 6ish, Saturday for a light supper. The place was quite full, but thinned out after some game on TV ended. Enjoyed our cocktails, empanadas, and fried dilly beans. Friendly Staff.

Good place to meet up for drinks

By Joshb2j |

Read some good reviews of of this place, so met up up with a group of buddies. Neat interior with a funky ambiance. Had happy hour pricing, which helped with the dozen pitchers we ordered! Also enjoyed some apps, which were tasty and reasonably priced; especially enjoyed the plantain chips with guacamole. Service was also good and friendly. Would definitely visit again.

Happy Hour

By Susan515796 |

Just had drinks and the largest and best Bavarian pretzel I have ever tasted. Along with mustard and a warm beer cheddar dip. All food that passed us looked good. Loved the vibe of the space, felt like it used to be an old dance hall, big open space, wood floors. Very friendly staff too.

Yummy bar food and then some!

By Snarth |

This is a cool bar/ restaurant with a great vibe, interesting interior, and very yummy food-- the best veggie burger anywhere says our friend the veggie burger connoisseur, and we loved the mac and cheese with bacon and the plantain chips and everything else we tried. Great selection of beers too. 4 instead of 5 stars because the service was a bit spotty, but there's no question we'd go here again and we look forward to it!

Interesting interior good eats

By jean m |

Comfortable seating and good service in old church setting. Young folks interested in community & civic discussions but not intrusive. Refreshing. Food is good too.

Late Saturday Lunch - still brunch menu

By MarthaFromAlabama |

I stopped in about 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon for a light late lunch after doing some sightseeing and was disappointed in the menu selection. I was expecting to be able to have a light lunch/ appetizer to hold me over til dinner, but they were still just using the brunch menu. Also, I had picked this place because it was close by and was supposed to have interesting decor, but it was nothing special.

An awesome NYE party

By Ryan L |

National Mechanics' NYE party was a tremendous value for the money. It was a great place to end 2015. I hope they do it again this year!

Great spot for a beer

By Melissa S |

Just stopped in for drinks, but this place has a ton of personality. Our bartender was great, very helpful. They have the faces of infamous Philly residents from history on each of the pint glasses, makes things a little more fun. Not for families...

Veggie burger = broccoli burger

By JJTJBQ |

Great service, good food. Tara was an excellent waitress with good suggestions & fast service. I had the veggie burger, which was mostly broccoli florets. Also julienned carrots & onions. I was not expecting broccoli, but it was ok. Husband had Sliders & Mac & cheese. He says both were good. We shared onion rings, which were ok also. Cool decor, especially in the bathrooms. Website is "5 years out of date." Then delete it or update it!

Turkey burger

By Roxanne B |

Avocado turkey burger was great! Also ordered a Bellini, a little to sweet for me. Decorations are a strange steam punk style, fun to observe.

Surprising good - outstanding fries

By Smilin' Trey |

Not sure what to expect when you enter a building that both served as a credit union, then a church. Got a little thrown off as I felt like I walked into an empty college bar, with pews for chairs. But very pleasantly surprised with the food. Kids are frie connoisseurs and then gave them thumbs up. Club turkey was great, ginger carrot soup very flavorful

Wonderful

By beaumont333 |

The building was a bank at one time and has a strange name now But is a lovely restaurant with good food and service.

Interesting place to eat near Independence Hall

By ruhungry2 |

Walked here from Independence Hall while waiting for our ticket time. Nice little pub in a cool old building. Interesting menu choices. I enjoyed my Chicken Hand Pie. My husband said the Crab Cake sandwich is also good. Glad we found this place to eat instead of eating at the foot court nearby.

Awesome

By heather d |

We stumbled across this restaurant only to find it was the old stomping grounds of my high school hang out.. Revival nightclub. What a great renovation. I made a reservation via open table and was worried when we arrived to find tables shared. The hostess explained that was normal but she has reserved a very large booth for my husband and I. They had my favorite British cider on draft...Yum! My hubby and I opted to share a house salad the Guinness beef broth steak fries and the lollipop lamb. Can you say DELICIOUS? Very heavy meals and glad we shared but it was so very tasty and satisfying. The atmosphere was cool, but it did get loud once it hot 10pm as a live DJ started. Our server, Aaron was also very attentive, pleasant, cute and prompt. We will return and thanks for a great meal!

Best French oast ever!

By doris1932 |

Went for Sunday Brunch. They served the best French toast ever! Excellent service. beats your typical hotel brunch! Interesting restaurant!

Sunday Brunch

By Liner18 |

Weekend visit to Philadelphia we were looking for a fun place for brunch. We had put our names down at 2 places with long wait times, we noticed an interesting building and realized they served brunch and there was a table available . From the minute we walked into the cool room (temperature and vibe) we knew we made the right choice. Four at of six of our group had make your own Bloody Mary with bacon infused vodka which was amazing. Our server was Rafe and he and the rest of the staff were terrific. We had usual brunch food eggs, bacon, omelettes all were served hot and delicious. If you are in Olde City area it's definitely worth a visit.

Good food and drinks

By RalphK328 |

An old bank building converted to a restaurant / bar. The food was good. The place was a little loud.

Excellent meal and service in a great atmosphere

By Valkyrie_Kate |

I visited National Mechanics with a couple of colleagues and we had a great time here - the old ambiance (including the awesome exterior of the building) was really cool, but more importantly the food was excellent. In particular, the mac and cheese appetizer was so amazing that we ordered another dish - it was really that good. I highly recommend a visit!

Great food, drinks, and a burger

By emme45 |

You'd think finding a good gourmet burger for dinner would be relatively easy, right? Well after trying 3 other places we happened upon National Mechanics, what a treat! Not only the burger, but the specialty margarita and pork chop entree. They also had steak, lamb chops, salmon and chicken choices; way beyond standard pub grub. Service was friendly, relaxed and spot-on. Glad the other 3 didn't work out.

Cozy reborn bank in Old City

By ANNAMARGARET B |

National Mechanics has been on my list for a long time and did not disappoint. Once a bank in Philadelphia's historic district, it's now a cozy brick walled pub with a weekly trivia night. Beers are still available by the pitcher here, with a great price for the local Yards IPA. My roast pork sandwich was spicy with spinach and provolone on a crusty roll, and my family enjoyed fish and chips and a turkey and avocado burger. Our server was helpful and fun.

This place is a disorganized hot mess.

By cjackson33 |

I made a reservation two weeks in advance and with less than a week before the reservation they called to say oops they wouldn't be open at the time of our reservation after all. So with less than a week to go we have find a reservation some place else. No way to do business!

Delightful Service

By Jill M |

What do you want after a day of walking, sweating, waiting in line, and walking some more? EXACTLY what National Mechanics had to offer: No-wait seating, friendly service, and a cool, comfortable atmosphere. Our server gave excellent recommendations, was polite and funny, and checked on us just-the-right amount of times! And don't forget the food, of course; the Mac-n-Cheese is outstanding!

Delicious dinner!

By LadyGaaGaa |

Great pit beef tacos for dinner. Seriously best taco I've had in the city. Great service and great food. I'll be back!

Very friendly service!

By Missiwanderlust |

Very loud, hard to have a conversation. The service was very friendly. The wine selection was decent, although, its summer, they really need a Rosé on the list! We ordered the poutine as an app, it was decent, the gravy was tasty but the fries were rather large so got really soggy quickly. Our meals came out 3 minutes after we received our app. So timing was "off". I ordered the salmon dish, it was a little overcooked but flavors were good. My husband got the national veggie, he really liked it. We would go again.

Drinks with colleagues

By velgavija |

We stopped for happy hour since a few of us were in town for a conference. We had great service at the bar and the food was good too, which is always a plus. The only reason we didn't stay for dinner was because we wanted to try more places before going home. The pretzel was humongous and yummy and the olive dip with pita chips was also extremely good.

Great food, atmosphere and service.

By lab12345 |

Great place near the Ben Franklin museum. Locals and tourists appear to mix here. Fun, friendly staff a hip vibe. Great vanilla mule cocktail and fun appetizers. Lamb burger was cooked perfectly with fresh cut fries.

Sports day with the girls

By SaltCoast-K-Crew |

Darn cool pub. It’s pretty big too. We just did drinks before dinner but there’s a rustic skillet dish other patrons were getting and that looked amazing. We were all in with the decked out Bloody Mary. Great place for a group most definitely. There’s a lot to see in the area of Old Philly so if you’re touring around swing in here.

Good Food - Extremely helpful staff

By Carlos O |

We've been in the restaurant with a baby and everybody was quite helpful. Excelent food and good music as well. Cosy environment.

Solid bar

By Stephen M |

This is a great atmospheric bar. Fast efficient, friendly service. Interesting industrial / church decor. Good deals at Happy Hour (runs 5-7) half price draft beer and nice food options.

Not for us

By Peersfamily |

Saw them on tripadvisor checked out their menu online. Other reviews were correct, its loud but their menu looked good and they were close. We ordered an appetizer and dinner. Appetizer never came. Dinner arrived after a substantial wait. I ordered a burger medium well and it was red and cold in the middle. With two kids in tow it was easier to eat around the edges than send it back and wait again.

EVERYTHING about this place!!!

By sachey91 |

National Mechanics knows exactly what its doing... 1) you've never had a veggie burger until you've had one here 2) make your own bloody mary bar on saturdays and sundays?! as in... "heres a pint glass and some liquor... have fun with 437846872 hot sauces, capers, jalapenos, stuffed olives, SHRIMP SKEWERS AND BACON WRAPPED PROSCIUTTO? even there standard mix is killer. 3) the weekends!!! this place transforms. the djs dont just play top songs... they mix great music. never a boring moment. All the bartenders are HOT and its always super fast and great service. awesome place to party. 4) living and working in the neighborhood, ive had a bunch of the food & obviously its one of my favorite neighborhood spots... but if this place wasnt cool enough... the food though. I mean of course their burgers are really, really, really good... but strawberry short ribs? Salmon fettuccine? Oh man though, the french onion soup and the crazy pumpkin cheesecake they had?? I've never had a bad bite. 5) Ok then their cocktail menu is wild... They have bloody maries topped with Guinness and something that tastes like cream soda... you can totally ask for a sex on the beach or a manhattan... but im telling you, ask them for a house specialty. You wont be disappointed. 6) and you really have to see the bathrooms. and the terrariums. and all the orchids and the wierd dog things! National Mechanics, I love ya! I recommend this place for anyone, its a great spot for a lunch break, to read a book on a sunday afternoon, i've taken my family here, kids think its awesome, great tourist spot, lots of history, ive even seen wedding parties happen here... and on the other end, you can get some real wild dance moves in, eat up their awesome happy hour prices, sing your heart out, think they have a quizzo and a game night too... Go there, eat all the food, and strike a conversation with anyone on that awesome staff, definitely a place you'll end up talking up too

So much delicious food.

A great spot to treat your favorite person to dinner and drinks. National Mechanics has great food and beverages for every occasion.

Busy and tasty

By islandewe |

We visited on a busy Friday night in March, but were seated and taken care of right away. One of us had a delicious soup and the hummus plate, the other a crab cake sandwich and fries. Both enjoyed a frosty beer. Historic ambience was nice.

Cool gothic interior and bar, average food

By dreamgenie |

National Mechanics is in an old bank building with stained glass windows and heavy wooden church pews in the booths. I came here in college when it was a dance club, so it holds some nostalgia for me. Both the outside and interior are beautiful--but the dinner we had the other night was expensive and just average fare. Two of the beers on tap were out, so I had to settle for my third choice. The entrees are expensive for a bar, about $22 each. Burgers are more reasonable, but we're trying not to eat red meat, so I ordered the salmon and my husband had the crab cakes. Both came with a side of orzo, which was also pretty bland. Sadly, we were disappointed with our meals. Given that it's a bar, it's probably best to stick to traditional bar fare, such as burgers. They were setting up for a karaoke night and have live music and other events. Great atmosphere for a bar, but best to stick to the basics when it comes to the menu.

Cool Stop

By Hannah K |

This restaurant was a nice stop on our walk through Philadelphia. The restaurant is inside of an old bank. The outside definitely looks like a bank, but the inside has been re-done. The atmosphere inside is really cool. Church pews for some of the seating, stained glass windows, and tons of funky decor. The staff was super nice and really helpful in recommending food and drafts. The food was average, but there was a nice selection. Would recommend. The atmosphere alone is worth it, and if you're a beer fan, it's definitely worth your time. Would stop by again.

Unique lunch spot in great location for tourists

By IowaTravelFan |

Located in an old gothic building that started as a bank, this restaurant (located between Chestnut and Market) was a great place for lunch. The decor was very creative. Be sure to take to look at the custom light fixtures and unique plumbing fixtures in the unisex bathrooms. Food was delicious and priced right. Wait staff attentive and efficient - kept those water classes filled after a morning of sightseeing in 90 degree weather! Very laid back atmosphere. Kind of noisy due to tall ceilings. Large bar. No tv's. Hear they have a great make your own Bloody Mary bar during their weekend brunches. Fun place for a quick bite to eat.

Cool respite from Philly heat

By Lou P |

HOT day in Philly called for an ice cream lunch. This fun bar was a friendly place to try to cool off, but no a/c....fan. If you don't like bugs, don't walk by the displays near the bathroom...all properly displayed but... Staff was very friendly and Marciano gave us many good recommendations. We tried local Birch Beer and some cold ice cream, plus lots of water. Service was slow, but we didn't care, gave us time to cool off.

Drink and pub meal at sensible money.

Great Service, good beer. Lovely and capable staff and a great atmosphere. Came here twice. Had a great Cobb Salad not my normal fayre but great ! Absolutely recommend!

Great Lunch

By D91Ttravel |

Stumbled on this place on our way to museums. Very eclectic pub setting with a beautiful bar. Menu has a large variety, specialty drinks are good, nice beer list. The food is very good but the service is exceptional. Servers work together, are attentive and friendly. A great place.

quirky, fun, yummy

My friend and I had a great lunch here after a show at the Arden Theater. I highly recommend the plantain chips with guacamole and the beet salad - outstanding!

All about the infused liquor

By The_Hailes |

We stopped in for Sunday brunch at the bar where we learned about the art of infusing liquor. We tried apple-cinnamon infused whisky with warm apple cider -- super yummy. It is an eclectic atmosphere with friendly staff.

Late Night Snacks

By Travel_lovin_momma |

After a late lunch we decided to have appetizers and a few beers for dinner. My husband had the carne asade fries that were delicious. I went with the pretzels which came with two delicious dipping sauces. Plus a couple draft beers…excellent little meal. Definitely will go back and try a main dish.

Fabulous craft cocktails!

By Floydova |

Came here for brunch on Sunday and we were so happy we did. Sat at the bar and had the opportunity to chat with the bartender who was whipping up some interesting cocktails like the bacon infused vodka that went into a Bloody Mary - there was a help yourself array of fixins that you added to personalize your Bloody Mary. I enjoyed the cheddar and bacon omelette with seasoned potatoes. My cocktail of choice was the spiked apple cider with homemade apple infused whiskey.

Service ruined the evening

By Wannes R |

Sad to see a cosy looking place with ok food be waisted by a horrible service. We ordered cocktails, starter and main plus a bottle of wine. For the two of us. Should be rather clear that we want a calm dubbing experience with that amount of alcohol. 5 minutes into the starter not even half way through our cocktail, they brought us the main. The table wasn't even big enough to hold all the food. I told the waiter we did not want the main yet as we did not yet finished our starter, he just mumbled and walked off. No try at finding a solution he just didn't care. When my fiancee was half way through her main, he wanted to take the plates away. I told him she wasn't finished, he reacted annoyed. 1 hour later, the plate was still on the table as he refused to take it away. The place should stop hiring lobotomized people!!!

Great food and service

By Ellen B |

We came here for dinner after a visit to the Museum of the American Revolution. It is literally less than a block away. The waitress very friendly and attentive and made great food recommendations. The wings were fantastic, crispy, hot and just the right amount of kick. We had the fish tacos and pork sandwich for dinner. The fish was crispy and the slaw topping was a great compliment. The pork sandwich had just enough kick to it. A great neighborhood spot, I would visit again.

Our go to place for a quick meal and drinks

By Linda S |

This is your Old City local bar/restaurant. We have been there several times and always had a good time. Good place for a hamburger and pub food. Service is good. It is a busy place in late afternoon as locals gather for after work drinks. This makes it a bit noisy because it is a very open room with a tall ceiling. Most of seating is pretty beat up but to me it adds to the cozy feel. My husband and son enjoyed the beer list (Yards IPA) which is a plus when you travel with them. We stayed at the Wyndham and this place is a quick walk away.

Surprised by food! looking for something different

By ptdavey@comcast.net |

High Top tables in an old bank building our Waiter Patrick ask for him if he is working. Made good recommendations for dinner. Chipotle chicken wings with cilantro crème was good. The short rib of beef was delicious and filling the best I have ever had. Salmon Was also good. Good drinks and friendly staff

Moved on from Boston to Philadelphia. Had brunch sat outside in the sun. Fantastic food and service. We had the French toast and avocado and egg. Both beautiful prepared and presented and I thought good value for money.

Great Place to Eat

By Debbie1757 |

Went to National Mechanics for dinner. Ended up ordering two apps and drinks. The waitress was super friendly and suggested her favorites. We had the Mac and cheese with Cheez-It’s on top and the Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese dipping sauce. Both were excellent and filling. The atmosphere is so historic and lively. Loved this place!

Very earthy atmosphere. Fantastic hamburgers. Great service. Even though it looks like a bar with a lot of seating, it's a good place fot families.

Historic Venue, Good Food, poor Service

By Toni T |

We attended a group event with happy hour buffet foods and drink tickets. Our group food offerings guacamole, salsa, and cream cheese all to be eaten with plantain chips, and cut pizza pieces was great and flavorful. The room was extremely loud as one would expect during happy hour and made conversation challenging. Beer, drink, and wine service for our group was by ticket. 🎫 My server served others their drinks before mine and a glass of white wine took 15 minutes to get. The venue in a historic building conserving historical features requires 6 or so steps into the building. The gender free restrooms marked "all" are small with narrow entry door Food is good. Service for me was poor. Accessible street parking is paid and can be challenging during busy times

Good food, mixed service

By Michael Y |

Three of us stopped in for an late lunch / early dinner. When we walked in, there weren’t too many folks in, so once we were seated at a table, the bartender ended up over to take our drink and food orders. Initial drinks came – mine something of a novelty item a bartend friend of mine made me once: Spagett. It’s a Miller highlife with a shot of Campari in it. The novelty of finding it in a bar made me have to have one! For food, we ordered a happy hour version of the Beef Sliders (two of them for $8), a Smash Burger ($18), and I opted for the Double Fried Chicken Bucket ($24). The bucket comes with 5 pieces of chicken and an obscene amount of fries. The chicken was well done, crispy and juicy. The attached image is most of the chicken – the rest of the bucket is fries! Just about the time our food came, the place had started filling up. Our bartender/server was plenty busy bending the bar, so we asked the hostess to ask of another round of drinks, who seemed annoyed that she would be bothered by having to fill such a role. We did end up with another server but the level of service had dropped a bit as they had become much more busy. Overall, the food was really good and *we* ended up finishing the fries so I could save the chicken for later! One final note – when the check came, there was a card asking for folks to donate to Planned Parenthood. There are a couple things that quickly turn me off when I’m out to eat, particularly when it happens when the bill comes: upcharges for using a credit card, pre-defined or fixed tips, and pimping political causes. I’m just there for the food experience.

Great place for a drink.

By Perpetual Motion |

It was about 3 pm and we were getting dry. Walked past a few places that were either packed or uninteresting and then we stumbled across Mechanics. Easy to miss even though it is a huge building. It use to be a bank and the only indication that it is a bar was a sandwich board at the to of the stairs. We walked in and fell in love. Large bar, plenty of tables, very high ceilings, wood everywhere and a sort of funky vibe which extended to our bartender, Sarah. She was fast, informative and friendly. We only had a couple of drinks but they offer a full menu. This place is friendly neighborhood type bar in old town with good prices.

Great food, great vibe

By janjee |

I loved this atmospheric bar and restaurant and look forward to visiting again soon. The food was great and the staff very friendly.

Love!

By March2241 |

This was my 2nd time there. Both times for drinks. Love the atmosphere and decor. Bartenders very knowledgable and amazing drinks!!!!

Unique bar and restaurant with great food

By RB |

One of the coolest looking restaurants I've seen. The food is to match, as well. The staff is also incredibly helpful and patient. From the crazy art to the greyhound statues to the unique bathroom faucets. This place is dripping with one of a kind charm. For food, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. If you can, get the Kenzinger from Philadelphia Brewing for your meal. It's so good.

Fan of National Mechanics

By PhillyShaney |

Newest Fan of National Mechanics..this place has a cool vibe; great service and even better food! I started out with the frisky sour drink special as we waited for our food! This was a good call on my part..drink was well balanced with flavor and nice amount of alcohol! The wings are so delicious and my friend love her burger! We were so full because we wanted to order the 'Pretzel', but that is for the next visit! The server was attentive and made good recommendations!

Awesome choice for lunch near Independence National Historical Park with vegan options

By 907blaked |

We had no problem getting a table for 5 at 1pm on a Sunday in November. We were pleasantly surprised by the live music, the Eagles football game showing on the wall, and the several vegan options available. Our group ordered cheesesteaks, sliders, and the vegan burger with daiya cheese, and everyone loved their food. Located next door to the Benjamin Franklin Printing Museum/Franklin Printing Office and about a block from the Museum of the American Revolution. Our Sunday in November was: Breakfast at Colombe Coffee Roasters; Liberty Bell; Independence Hall tour; Supreme Court Chamber in Old City Hall; American Philosophical Society Museum; West Wing; Congress Hall tour; Benjamin Franklin Museum; Franklin Court Printing Office; Lunch at National Mechanics; and Museum of the American Revolution.

Great atmosphere, food was fantastic and the service was excellent. Very busy popular bar at Happy hour

Wonderful venue - excellent service - great food!

By MammaShibs |

A recent family wedding brought us to the National Mechanics for the private farewell brunch. The property was a perfect choice for this event. Venue fit in nicely with the entire wedding package. Within walking distance from our hotel (the Wyndham) we attended a delicious brunch on Sunday before saying our goodbyes. Brunch consisted of a Bloody Mary bar (unfortunatly we did not take advantage as we were driving home from there) with a slew of hot sauces! Coffee and tea were flowing and frequently refilled by our wonderful servers. Food was excellent with fritatas, fruit with topping, and waffles as my favorite choices.

Interesting Interior/Good Service

By strongforu |

I met a group for friends here just after the lunch rush hour ended so our timing was perfect. The interior has some interesting, if not odd decor, and the bathrooms need to be checked more frequently. The food wasn't bad, but nothing spectacular. I had a chicken sandwich that smelled like pork. The onion rings were totally delish though. My friends didn't care for the creme brulee, but did like the sweet potato fries and the salad with chicken and bacon. The chocolate cake was too rich, even for an self-proclaimed chocoholic!

Great bar in philly

By Bruno D |

Must visit if you are coming to philly. Great architecture plus good night life and drinks. Did not try food but who wants it at a bar!

Good food & servce

By peoplesjourney |

On a late afternoon In August, the four of us stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner. We ordered the award winning veggie burger, pork tenderloin and Frenched chicken, all were great. The Mac cheese appetizer is worth it as well. The bathrooms are a weird design but serviceable.

Very friendly bar, great service and food

By Lorraine R |

Went to National Mechanics on a Tuesday night so it was pretty quiet but we were made to feel really welcome. Sat at the bar and Gio and James were very friendly and attentive all night. Had some great cocktails and the food is also very good, but generally it was just a really nice place to be. We had seen the place earlier in the day and had planned to go there. It doesn’t look like an obvious bar/restaurant from the outside but I would definitely recommend it.

Great atmosphere

Brilliant bar in historic downtown Philadelphia, we stopped in for a drink and stayed for a few hours! Great atmosphere and service.

Cool Decor & History, Fine Drinks, Skip the Food

By Jessica W |

This is a fun bar with an awesome interior. Once the building housed a bank and a church, but now it is a bar/restaurant. The vestiges of its days as a church remain in the form of stained glass and booths with pews as seats. There are plenty of terrariums decorating the space as well. After dozens of trips here over the years, I conclude that the food is pretty bad , but the drinks are fine. So, only go to see the interior and to imbibe on the drinks.

Good mix of bar food and more exotic flavors

By KidDocDMC |

Stopped in after finding this one on Google Maps. It is is an old bank, though only the outside facade reveals anything bank-like. The inside is pure bar - which is where I sat. The service was instant from the bartender, and the food came out just as quickly. Had a salad and burger, plus a good, draft beer. All were good. The menu is a bit more extensive, including lamb chops and a lot of Middle-Eastern inspired dishes. Probably will go back.

Always a good experience

By Beachlover046 |

Love this place! Great service and food..only thing I would like to see is a TV or two. Beer choices are good and menu offerings ample.

Lovely

By traveler60California |

This little gem is a great neighborhood find. The service was fast and friendly. The food scrumptious. The decor was fun. Old church pews for seats with sturdy tables and floors. Good beer too!

Great atmosphere and food

By Greg G |

We at here on September 9th. It was a really hot day in Philly so we ate lite. My wife and i had a salad and a cheese tray. It was all really good. They had some local made cheeses and very nice fresh salad. Great beer selection and full bar. The other food we saw going out looked and smelled really good. the atmosphere is awesome old stained glass windows and old church pews for the benches. I think its past uses have been a bank and a church. the service was great too.

Solid meal and decent service - nothing too special

By Seferina B |

Due to a combination of picky eaters and family members who needed vegetarian or fish options, I came here for a post-graduation dinner with 4 family members. Although the hostess congratulated me a few times, that was about the extent of the good and happy service. Looking on Yelp, their fish and chips is listed as a dinner option, however, when we got there, we were informed (rather brusquely) that it was only available on the lunch menu. One waitress told my mother (who wanted the fish and chips) that she thought the kitchen would be able to put it out anyway, but another waitress came over and quickly disabused us of that notion. Their burger and salmon were both perfectly fine - nothing too thrilling. As a diner, one thing that irked me was that their burger comes with nothing but the meat, buns, and toppings but with no sides - so if you want fries, you have to order those separately. The food also took a while to come out, which, considering there were three burgers and two orders of salmon, shouldn't have been the case. All in all, inoffensive dining but nothing to write home about.

Looks a little rough but lunch was great

By Ashley32905 |

From the outside it looks a little interesting and it was pretty empty when we showed up on a Saturday around 1pm. They were serving brunch only (seems common around here that lunch menu is weekdays only, weekends are brunch and dinner). Everything we got was really tasty, the veggie burger was real julienned veggies instead of a pureed pattie. I highly recommend the turkey avocado burger (even if you aren't usually a turkey fan this is juicy and flavorful). For a side you definitely have to get the sweet potato fries, giant wedges that were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Good selection of beers on tap too!

Great lunch! Great service!

By eschlack7 |

We enjoyed our late Saturday afternoon lunch. The service was friendly and efficient. The veggie burger was really tasty and fresh. My son liked his skillet with egg and sausage. Fun atmosphere! Would return.

Grateful

By Mfunnyb |

The food was amazing! Cute atmosphere. Friendly staff. Quick walk from our hotel. Mac and cheese and the BLAT was yummmy!

Eclectic but delicious menu

By pretzellogic |

A wonderful building, inside & out. Great selection of beer. Very good food and service.. We had dinner and enjoyed it thoroughly. The ceiling is very high, so it can be noisy. Had the Plantain Chips and Guacamole (delicious and not nearly as weird as it sounds) and Nachos grande for starters. Both recommended. I had a chef's special bacon wrapped scallops for an entree. The only thing I found a bit weird is portion sizes. Some dishes were huge, others almost tiny. Scallops were delicious, but not for the large appetite. I don't think you would go wrong dining here.

Really tasty food

By Alex S |

We went at kaokee night it was amazing. The food was excellent, we ordered nachos, excellent mix of flavors. I loved the decoration.

Nat'l Mechanics Pork Ossobucco

By siblingofanemployee |

The food was good, but I'm mainly writing this review as an experiment with online viewing of sorts. Anyway, the meat was perfectly cooked. It was the perfect balance of fat and tender. The mashed potatoes had a strong consistency and the broccolini was crunchy with a sweet sauce dripping from the pork. The place was quite loud as it is more bar than restaurant, but I don't honestly care about the volume at places.

National Mechanics - Very welcoming

By DeePartyofSix |

The bar / restaurant is situated in a converted bank. The hostess has a ready smile, and greeted us promptly. Chatted for a minute, asked if we had been there before and thanked us for choosing their establishment .... Wow!!! The waiter, Joseph, was just as friendly and hospitable. I have some food intolerances, so he verified my meal with his manager. The wait staff delivered the plated meals and also joked around with us. Honestly, it seemed that all patrons were treated with the same cordiality. Such a pleasure and very welcoming. The drinks were delicious - hubs had "Snacks on the Beach" and stuck with my Malibu and coke. We had veggie burgers ... really tasty. I believe the veggie burgers may be their signature dish. Highly recommend this bar / restaurant.

Excellent food while watching the Basketball game

By Justin W |

I stooped into the National Mechanics Bar when the bar where our Alumni Association used to meet closed for business. I thought they might meet close by but could not find anything online so I found this bar around the corner and they turned on the game for me . The bartenders could not have been nicer to me. I was not very hungry so I ordered. Chicken Quesadilla, which when it came out was over-sized and delicious. It came with three sides and was a meal onto itself. For dessert, I ordered the Apple Turnovers with Cinnamon ice cream on top and was the perfect ending to the meal. This while both bartenders refilled my Coke through the game. I left a bigger tip than usual. We won the game and the bartenders just let me sit quietly and watch the game by myself. Although it was not the same not being with other Alumni, I still had a nice time with friendly service and excellent food. It was a really nice bar/ restaurant.

Good Food, Friendly Service, Quirky Decor

By bayonnebrawler |

Walking up the steps to NMB&R felt like I was stepping into Gringotts Bank. Once inside, sitting in a pew it became distinctly church like. If my waitress is to be believed the building housed both at some point in it's history. Clearly the slightly off center bric-a-brac is the National Mechanics touch. Go for the weird, stay for the food. It is good. I can highly recommend the onion soup, hummus and veggie burger. This is a true veggie burger. This is not a meat burger substitute.

Hungry & wanted a drink

By Zina E |

We came arrived at this place around 4pm and ordered cocktails and a hummus appetizer. The food was good but the cocktail that my husband ordered, Timelapse, was really watered down. We sent it back and switched to beer. The waitress came back and said " well she adds water to the drink". We pointed out the menu states gin, elderflower, lime juice..but she insisted that water is to be added to the drink. Around 5 we ordered dinner, skirt steak and salmon and they both were good.

Good Place for an Early Family Dinner

By Amy P |

We needed a good place to sit down and eat an early dinner with our family after a full day of walking in Philly. National Mechanics had popped up on Trip Advisor and we realized it was on the way back to our hotel, so we called for a reservation. When we arrived about 20 minutes early our table was ready and we were seated right away. The server did a good job of making us feel welcome and telling us about our menu options. Our meals were all excellent. We ordered off the Happy Hour food menu as well as the regular menu and all our meals were as expected and came out promptly. We would recommend this for families, but it is definitely a bar and we would probably not have been as comfortable later in the evening. Overall and excellent experience!

Great food and Service

By Keebo427 |

Went there with a group of 30 people for a graduation celebration. They staff helped us plan the event and were great. Once there the service was OUTSTANDING. The food was great and we were able to get fast service for our drinks. Great variety of beers and wines. Looking forward to going back again.

Nice Brunch Spot, Great Location

By Andy K |

Family and I visited for brunch and virtually opened the place at 11:00 sharp on Sunday morning. While the food was quite good, as was the coffee, the service left a bit to be desired. Not in terms of being pleasant and attentive, but when it came to the orders there were multiple mistakes made. Several ingredients had been omitted, side orders were missing, leaving half of our orders incomplete. The issues were addressed right away and the staff did apologize. But being the first table seated we were somewhat surprised by the problems delivering everything that we ordered. I should add that this is a good choice for vegetarians, they have several options on the menu.

Friendly Neighborhood Pub

By Tommyg2230 |

The most striking thing about National Mechanics to me is the way high ceiling and the whimsical lighting. It's a fun neighborhood place just off the busy Walnut Street corridor. The food is standard pub fare -- wings, burgers, fish n chips; a nice beer selection. Friendly service, reasonable prices.

Great locale, service and value.

By BRuce M |

In the Old City near the Museum of the Revolution. Great drinks, innovative menu, excellent service and an excellent value. Nice time we are in Philadelphia we will be sure to come in again.

Great variety, unique atmosphere, good prices

By Joanna P |

Just go and have a good time! The atmosphere was light and fun. The menu was diverse and cost friendly. The place was in great shape, the staff was friendly and the service was prompt. They do have a bar inside, so if you want someplace quiet on a weekend, maybe try some place else. The food options ranged from traditional to unique. The building was formerly used as a church which provided an interesting environment. There were stain glass windows and former church benches being used for booth seating. So go, relax, eat well, and enjoy the atmosphere!

Nice!

By reisenderjo |

Cool bar in a historic building. Well assorted selection of drinks and local / national / international brews. Service was great. The interior has a nice cozy bar feel to it. Reminds me a lot of the 'bruin cafes' back in my Amsterdam years, actually the whole old part of town has a very Dutch vibe, love it! Food was excellent. Had the mac & cheese as starter, those were done right. Larger elbows, sauce nice and creamy with the crumbs perfectly crisped. Crab cakes as main dish, lovely texture and a great taste, aioli is a perfect match. Creme Brulee with nice crust and excellent custard. Would recommend that place any day of the week.

Outstanding in every way

By lalalandartwork |

Was there for karaoke and had a blast! I had a great local beer called yards IPA as suggested by the super helpful bartender. They had an awesome dinner menu and was blown away by their veggie burger! I will be a regular here, watch out!!! '

Went here with a group of about 75. They were so attentive to us. Open bar was top notch and dinner buffet excellent. Good food, good service, good cheer!!

Great Find

By Mirella_456 |

Very grand building, went through the velvet curtains and thought I had ended up back in London! Had Newkie brown to remind us of home but to see a skanky mainstream UK cider on tap was a step too far (please, there are far better ciders). We had a superb burger and chicken sandwich. Service was great, just the right level of friendly. We might have looked a bit out of place, a middle aged British couple but having been a punk in my youth it felt like home especially with a great selection of punk/new wave being played. First place on the list to revisit when we are back in Philly later this year.

Funky restaurant

By Jane H |

Found this bar and restaurant from an Adam Richmond show and it didn't disappoint. We shared a starter of wings I had mushroom lasagna my husband had the pork chop both were tasty. Service for drinks was good the only downside was the main course came before we'd finished the starter

Happy Hour fabulous.

By Bill D |

Great place. Had the happy hour special, veggie burger sliders, quesadillas and an order of fries with drafts. Amazing friendly service even though super busy and short staffed.

Great bar in a wonderful building and space

By Matt S |

National Mechanics is a great use of a historical building, and welcomes patrons (once going up the exterior stone stairs) with an open, but inviting and classy, interior. I was only here with a colleague quickly for a drink, appreciating their whiskey selections. The bartender was good (although a bit harried) during our very brief visit.

Excellent place

By FCK1 |

Went to this restaurant on recommendation from our hotel, and it was a great find. The bar has a very cozy feel, with lots of western-style wood. The beer and cocktail selection is wide and varied. The food selection is great and the quality is superb. We had the short rib and the crabcakes and both were excellent. Will definitely return on my next visit to philadelphia!

Very good food, fair ambiance

By Jed3 |

Four of us had dinner on a Saturday night. We went early, and the bar was buzzing while the tables were empty. As the time wore on, the tables were taken. This is a small place, with a large bar area and 5 tables close to the bar. The seating for the tables were old church benches, and the tables were bare thick wood. The tables were somewhat higher than usual. The noise was heavy from the bar and the music was on the loud side. That said, we were able to converse easily, possibly because were were in a corner. The bathroom needed some updating. The food was very good to excellent. The menu was medium in variety, but adequate for everyone. We had a variety, including lamb chops which were proclaimed mostly very good. I had the ratatouille which was a large portion and delicious. Prices were reasonable.

Cool spot, fast service, great burger, lots of tap beers

By Nancy B |

This is my second time here. Both times the food was excellent, the service has also been very good. This time I got a smash burger. Fresh bun, well prepared. We stopped before a Flyers game, Not to busy yet. The atmosphere is also very cool. We'll call it early american warehouse. Lawrence was our service, he was very good. There's about 15-20 beers on tap, on a chalk board. Definetely will return.

Loved It!

Another place for lunch that we initially passed up - from the outside it reminded us of church steps - we had no idea what it was like inside, so we doubled back after not finding exactly what we were looking for and stepped into National Mechanics (unusual but a great name by the way). It's just a bar with high tops, booths and of course the bar, but very personable servers and nice vibe here. Casual fare, but we loved the feeling we had in this restaurant. Hats off to you guys. By the way, at a certain hour they have like a zillion sauces up on the bar (I think we have a picture). Anyway, no put on airs here, just a great stop for a brew and burger - or whatever. Don't pass it up.

Great bar scene

My husband and I stopped in for a few beers/wine after touring Philly. We got here about 615pm and it was happy hour, really $3 for craft beers and a $1 off wine. The bar is an old bank. It was around Halloween so the bar tenders were dressed. They were very attentive, had a good bar food/restaurant list for dinner but we were only there for drinks. I'd go back, nice dark wood walls/bar, happening scene, place was getting busy when we left at 7pm or so. I'd go back.

Very good food and service

I went here during a long weekend with my husband and kids. The service was great and the waiter that my daughter (who was 13) thought was cute even took a picture with her. The food was very good and had a good vibe. The only down side was that it seemed this was a popular spot for people in their early to mid twenties by the time we were leaving, a lot of people were already visibly intoxicated. If you are going with kids, I would suggest going earlier in the evening.

Brunch

Really good brunch is Old City. We always passed this place over but the food, drinks and atmosphere were really great and we’ll definitely be back. Very laid back vibe and good mix of people.

Good Place for Pub Food and Beer

Have been here twice. Once for dinner (quick bite) and once in the morning for their 'Make Your Own Bloody Mary'. Liked it both times. Had a burger and some apps the first time....along with some local beers. Very good, nice value and nice service....good vibe as well. Really like the MYOBM thing. They give you your choice of vodka in a salted or not salted pint glass with your choice of garnish. You then make your way over to the MYO area....that has premix or tomato juice, and a TON of hot or not sauces. The bartendress will answer any questions you have...and off you go! Will return.

Great place.

Great spot for a quick bite

Walking around the historic district, we were looking for a place to relax a bit. The bartender, Lauren, was great. Friendly and helpful. Gave us lots of tips on what to do. Make it a stop on your next visit.

Good Bar Food

Came in for some a shared lunch late on a Friday afternoon. Soon after placing our order we realized the happy hour menu would be in effect in 5 mins. Luckily we were able to cancel the shared lunch and instead got a few HH apps. Historic venue. Not packed. Waitstaff/bartender very nice Right around the corner from our hotel. Easy peasy

Interesting history, fun vibe. GREAT food!

I place this in the "must-visit" category when you visit Philadelphia. We happened upon it serendipitously while cruising around on a self-guided walking tour. The building is charming, the wait staff was friendly and efficient( Michael--you get high marks!) and the food was delicious and, served in a timely manner, even though we arrived during a busy lunch time. I say order with abandon--you won't be disappointed.

Good food, interesting menu

A group of 10 of us were in town for a work event and stopped here for an early dinner before driving home. They were very accommodating for our large group, and the service was fast and efficient. Everyone was happy with their orders: great burgers with lots of choices for cheese and toppings, diced chicken tender salad, avocado and plantain chips. The vegetable orzo was delicious and with a side order of pickled jalapeños, was my favorite item.
