NIce place for a drink

By philippe_cailliau_be |

Good place to get a drink, large choice of beers. Very basic food but inexpensive, what is quiet rare in Penn

great service when you can get it

By Alexandra G |

We walked in a little before midnight on a Friday - we were seated immediately and then waited for 20 minutes and never met our waiter. We asked multiple staff members to send our waiter over - nothing. We gave up and sat at the bar, where the bartender (Susan??) was AWESOME. She totally turned around our visit - really quick service and very friendly. I had a wonderful portabella sandwich and my friend had some kind of burger, which he seemed to really like. Good selection of beers on tap. When I visit Philly again I'll likely go back... I'll just make sure to sit at the bar!

Nice meal

By Emerald1125 |

This is in an older building with steep steps, a tight door, and a tiny waiting area; these are not necessarily bad, they are part of the experience of old Philly. Excellent food, including a few Irish dishes; I recommend the Shepherd's Pie.

Lots of fun - great location

By Murphy4 |

Went to tavern with family on a Saturday night, eve of the Erin Express. Still very crowded with those who participated on the Erin Express, but we were seated rather quickly. They had a DJ playing who was very good. Food was great, and so was the service. Very disappointed to use the restroom to find toilet paper all over the floor in the hallway and all over the floor in the bathroom. There was NO toilet paper in ANY of the stalls, the counter with the sink was completely full of beer cans & plastic cups. The worst was when I went in the stall & found USED feminie products on the floor. Mentioned what I encountered with a female waitress and she just blew me off. I understand they had a ton of patrons because they were one of the stops for the Erin Express, but there were 3 people who were seating those coming in - it was NOT a busy night. Someone should have had the responsibility of checking the bathrooms. When I mentioned it to my husband, he said the restroom for the men was just as bad....NOT going back. It is a shame because it was a quaint place to meet friends for drinks - disappointed!

So-So Dining Option

By Keith B |

Food was actually OK here. But the dirty utensils and happy but fairly bumbling service left much to be desired. Bread pudding was the worst I've ever had. Brownie sundae wasn't too bad. Apple cobbler is mediocre at best. Glad I didn't order dessert.

Post game at the Palestra

By Mary |

Went here for beer and food after a Penn State game at the Palestra. The place was packed but the bartenders worked so efficiently to keep the drinks coming. We shared a chicken quesadilla and a Reuben sandwich with fries. The food was delicious and nicely presented Lots of TVs to catch sports

Great food, great prices

By Terry W |

Loved this little Irish Pub located on a charming side street very near U Penn, Drexel University, and the Sheraton University City. Loved the charming atmosphere, and the food was excellent. Prices were very reasonable, too.

Penn Pub Grub

By RichPCal |

This is a regular stop, usually for lunch when visiting sons at school. Pretty much what you would expect...decent bar food at reasonable prices and a nice selection of beers. Our servers have always been friendly and courteous. I never recall waiting. Pretty good range of choices for a bar.

Irish Pub!!!

By Mechael |

Regular pub food and some great Irish dishes as well. Love the place -- wait staff were excellent. We liked it so much we went there for dinner and for lunch the next day!

Good Food Bad Service

By Marc S |

It took 30 min. to get our drinks (2 beers and a baily's irish cream). The food was decent but overpriced our waitress was there only to deliver the drinks, the food came out 30 mi. after that and the host brought it out. She even didn't give us a check until 15 min. after the busboy cleared our plates. Terrible, terrible service. It wasn't even busy.

Worth a Return Trip

By Ditdew |

Had dinner on two consecutive weekday evenings. Nice place trying to be a traditional Irish pub. Nice part of town - tucked into the UofPenn campus neighborhoods with several other restaurants. The bartender was very courteous and helpful in making suggestions from the menu. Food was very good - fresh and hot. Service was prompt. Good selection of tap and bottled beer. Pleasant environment for a solo dinner, until after 7pm or so when the crowd builds and the place gets really (!) loud. That's really the only reason for 4 of 5 stars. Bar seating and table seating are available. Appropriate for kids/families, until the bar crowd gets loud. The basement restroom was clean, bright and nicely decorated - Irish-pub-style - as was the stairway and small hallway leading to the restrooms. I did not see a handicap-accessible restroom. That doesn't mean there is none - I just didn't see one.

Fun Irish bar

By Boscoeurotraveler |

Stop in for a pint and quick bite with friends. Nothing spectacular, but very enjoyable. Can get crowded at lunch when school is in session.

Perfect patio for drinks

By HockeyMama29 |

Great service, outdoor seating, decent draft selections and food. Perfect location one street from Penn's main campus.

Love the burgers and fries

By dreamer215 |

I'm seriously picky about burgers and fries, and this place has great juicy burgers. The fries are good to- not crispy, LIGHTLY breaded, not greasy- really good.

Reheated From Frozen Food

By MLilly190 |

Quality of food only deserves 2 stars. All fish frozen. Veggies way over cooked as though sitting in a pot all day. I suppose if you drink enough beer you will not notice the lack of quality of the food. Just not good if you are looking for fresh food. For drinks however, Great Atmoshere! Super nice Staff during my visit! That is why I rated it a 3 Won’t come back to eat, but will to have a drink with friends

Fun Irish pub located on Penn campus

By Ortho3311 |

Fun Irish pub located on Penn campus across from the Law school. My son is a first year student at Penn and we have eaten there numerous times so far. We have been there for drinks and appetizers and meals. Have dined indoors and outdoors. I have never been disappointed. Staff is friendly and accommodating and their bathroom is very clean. Food is typical pub fare. They had live music recently when we dined there on a Friday night. I just bought a gift card for my son so that he can enjoy a tasty meal and get a break from the dining halls. I know that this will be a regular stop for us over the next four years.

Better than OK

By cmg3 |

Stopped in for a late afternoon Sunday lunch. The steak and cheese is very, very much better than at Geno's, and the Reuben was exactly perfect. The beer was cold and the service was attentive. The music seemed strangely out of sync and loud for the style of restaurant, but, we didn't go there for the music anyhow. There are seats for about a dozen out front.

College atmosphere with satisfactory bar food

By blake0821 |

It looks better outside, once inside you are amongst students and families visiting. I tried fish and chips which was ok especially when hungry. My husband had bangers and mash which he consumed. Local beer proved good. It was an ok visit.

New Deck/Old Irish

By Herstory_62 |

With authentic Irish ambience, good brews, friendly service & great menu, that includes old standbys & new combos, this was a perfect choice for lunch w/ our granddaughters, who chose the usual cheeseburger & blockbuster fish & chips, while we relished a salmon BLT & chicken curry over rice.

Nice Pub with Good Food

By John F |

Nice Pub with British/Irish/Eclectic menu. Excellent Bangers and Mash, Shepherd's Pie, and Fish and Chips plus lots of different Appetizers and such.

They asked us to give up the table after we bought 3 bottles of wine!

By Fran S |

I went here with some friends I hadn't seen in years - we ordered 3 bottles of expensive wine, and appetizers - yes, we were there for quite a while, but to ask us to leave b/c there were people waiting was wrong. The tab was hundreds of dollars for a table of 4 (we scrunched in a 5th person). I rated average as opposed to poor since they at least attempted to be nice when kicking us out, but if that is their policy I don't think I'll return.

Pleasant

By Ron S |

Walkable from UPENN hospital. I had a burger. My wife had salad with salmon. Both very good. Waitress was ver friendly. Busy place. Definitely will be back.

Some things haven't changed -- and it's a good thing!

By Anita D |

I hadn't been to the New Deck for several years but recently returned while staying at The Inn at Penn. The Deck atmosphere is STILL friendly, the food is terrific, and the service great! Try it out when in the vicinity of Penn's campus. You won't regret it!

Nice Irish Pub & Food

By D W |

A perfect place for lunch and a beer. We were in the area and stopped for a quick lunch. It was not crowded yet and service was just good. Our food was 'fine'.....what I expect in a college pub. It is located on a cute street and the back has a small area outside. I imagine it gets busy later in the day and eve.

Great Irish pub

By 6518431043321 |

I had the delicious chicken tenders while sitting at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and recommended a local beer that turned out to be great also. I love the atmosphere of Irish pubs and this did not disappoint.

Good place for bar grub and a brew!

By bdobis12 |

This tavern has some charm and you feel like you are in a neighborhood watering hole despite being steps from Penn's campus. The menu has a nice variety but isn't overwhelming and the beer selection was solid. Service was good and the price was very very reasonable!

Great Irish food

By Mike L |

I was in town for 6 days I ate here 4 nights. The food was great service was great as well. Just no Mexican Beer go figure at an Irish bar.

KARAOKE! But it's a college student spot.

By Alexandra D |

KARAOKE! But it's a college student spot.

Good service great food

By lorims |

I was in town for a week for business and we frequented this place. They have really good food and we received great service every time we went. Glenna was a wonderful waitress! Their mixed drinks were also delish!

Busy

By Lisa B |

Good food, mtavern atmosphere, great location but very busy even after the typical lunch hour. Be prepared to wait for service.

Good food and reasonable prices

By Delta_BCRob |

My wife and I ate dinner here twice and thought the meals were good and the prices also very good. I had the Shepherds Pie one night and the Monterey Chicken another night. My wife had 2 different salads and enjoyed them both although I don't remember which ones she had. Wine was also reasonable and good.

Friendly neighborhood vibe

By Eileen L |

After multiple visits, it's easy to recommend this spot for its solid bar food, friendly fast ( but not rushed) service, good beer selection, super location near Penn campus, Drexel and U Penn hospital. Delicious loaded potato soup, great salads, burgers...everything we've tried so far is good.

Comfortable food

By greatgobsofgouda |

Wonderful spot near a great donut shop. Had the shepherd's pie which is one of my all time great comfort foods. Piping hot with great flavour and to top it all off delicious whipped mashed potatoes.

Good food, good times.

By myzygy |

Good food in generous portions (burgers and Shepherd's Pie were big hits at our table). Nice wait staff. Ambience is great. Good times during karaoke!

Solid bar food

By Traveler98769876 |

Solid bar food at solid prices. Great beer selection. Decent bartenders. Good location for a Penn pregame.

Pre St. Paddy's day lunch

By Greg S |

Perfectly poured Guinness, service was friendly and on time. Shared a lunch that was very good. I also liked the peanuts that were available before lunch was served. The place was very busy at 11:30 am. You know is has to be good when it is full of locals.

College bar - very poor service

By amethyst1875 |

The atmosphere is fine for a college bar. The food, well not the best - it's so-so bar food. The service - atrocious! The waitress couldn't be bothered to do her job. She was too busy chatting.

Good place to meet for a couple of drinks

By time2travel13 |

This last time was our fourth visit. Combined they have been a mixed bag of good food fair service or great service and fair food. All in all never a truly bad experience. We seem to keep going back so hey they have to be doing something right.

Great place before concert

By CEG43 |

We stopped by before going to a concert at The Tower Theater. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was great, filled with Penn and Drexel students. The cheese steak was hot and tasty as was the crispy chicken salad. Many beers to pick from and it was worth the stop.

Open late and casual

By Ed L |

We were arriving late and looking for a place for a small dinner near the university. This was one of the few available, and it was pretty good. The weather was really nice for an October night, and we got a seat outside. Menu was simple with sandwiches and small pizzas, which worked well for us. Very casual and definitely a student crowd. Service was good, and we were pretty satisfied.

Nice Irish Pub, food was ok.

By FacesFirst |

We just had lunch at New Deck Tavern. The atmosphere was good. It's a quaint pub in a beautiful old building. It has plenty of interesting things to look at on the shelves & walls. The tables are very close together so I imagine it can get pretty loud & claustrophobic when it is busy. I started out the review talking about the decor because the food was edible but nothing special. My husband had Shepard's Pie & I had Parmesan Chicken with Penne pasta. Both were ok. We also had Artichoke Dip for an appetizer. It was ok but nothing to rave about. We also had 2 beers & 2 ice teas. The bill was $43. Not cheap considering the food was just ok. If you are looking for a place to have a beer in a beautiful pub this is your spot but I'd eat before going.

Great atmosphere

By michaelreuter1 |

My wife is an Alumni of UPENN and while she was in school we had gone to New Deck many times and also had great service. The food is typical bar food but the atmosphere makes up it. A great stop for lunch or to just grab a few drinks.

Nice atmosphere

By Jay B |

We had cheese steaks and French onion soup. Food was good and prices were good as well. Friendly and attentive server. Enjoyed a relaxing lunch with my family.

Dinner

By Gary S |

Worst Philly cheesesteak ever. One step above frozen food section. Margarita kinda plastic too. Fish and chips ok.

Good Irish bar

By Dee R |

Great selection of cool pint combos. Food is average but good. Kids had everything they needed. Great staff. Great ambiance.

Great happy hour and good food!

By Kat A |

Happy hour was great. We sat outside and it was really nice. All the food we had was also delicious. Recommended for some good pub food!

Noisy but okay for moderately priced lunch...

By Traveler |

The food was okay- nothing special, but also priced accordingly. Lively atmosphere if you don't intend to be able to have much of a conversation.

Get there before the rush

By The Travel Doctor |

So this is not a "University" bar, but built steps from Drexel...it actually is. I got there about 11:30 and there was plenty of seating. Restaraunt. The outside is unassuming and actually thought about not going in as it seemed like it was a place that was not well frequented. The inside was nice, but looked like it had many many hard nights of partying. Food and beer They had a good selection of beers on tap, and discovered several new ones for my list. I ordered my first philli cheeses teak, and thought it was good...not great but good. Service The service was excellant and my attendant was always checking in with me to see if I needed anything. By the time I left at 1 pm, the place was packed with standing room only crowd and a small line up to get in. Sadly I could not get back, but would have loved to see the nightlife here.

Great irish tavern and fare

By LSUTraveller |

Service was excellent - immediately seated and very friendly. Lots of great tavern food options and it all was excellent.

Nice Sunday afternoon

By Todd R |

The New Deck offers traditional Irish and American food and a great selection of beer. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food was good. Prices are in line with other city taverns.

Great Place

By Johnny |

Typical menu options. Delicious food. Prices were good. Very busy and loud. Friendly, fun service. Great look inside and out. Parking is hard.

Cheap eats and drinks.

By Alice G |

I do have to say the prices were reasonable. A very pretty place. We sat at the bar, the bartender hmmm let's just say he needed a little bit more people skills. The one thing that was very noticable to me was that the bar area was very dirty, looks like it hasnt been cleaned in a very long time, so that leaves me the question "what does the back of the house look like?"

Nice place to go, food is good, nice beer choices, reasonable prices

By Paul K |

Had the opportunity to eat here twice on recent trips to Philly. the food was very good (cheese steak and bangers / mash) beer choices were excellent (where can you find Harp on draft?), and reasonable prices. Recommended for your list of casual and fun dining.

Good atmosphere for Irish bar

By Dansksteve |

Stopped in for lunch during business trip. Had excellent fish and chips with vinegar and salt and Harp beer on tap. Recommend for casual open ambiance, many great side tables and corners to have private conversations.

Really low quality food.

By Praveen K |

Really low quality food.

Irish Pub with style!

By Carolyn W |

Wonderful location on a back alley with wonderful indoor and outdoor dining! Loved the Fish & Chips! Friendly staff and great ambiance!!

Great French Fries and 'Buffalo Dip'

By GlobalVilla9er |

This place is located on a quaint street in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania and has the best french fries on earth. They also have a great, unique 'Buffalo Dip' dish which is very tasty.

Nothing Negative

By Manny P |

I waivered between four and five stars on this review. The atmosphere was good, the waitress was good, the beer was really good and the food was terrific...so five stars it is. We vacillated between the shepherd's pie and the fish and chips, so we ordered one of each to split. It was the best shepherd's pie I've had and the fish and chips was great. A block and a half down the street form the Hilton Inn at Penn. Open until 1 AM. If you like Irish pubs, especially for the food, this one satisfies.

Campus tradition

By Susan C |

Traditional Pub grub - just OK. Small outside seating and a fair range of beers and Sports on TV. Next to a cute coffee shop.

Packed Place

By Courtney W |

Came here the weekend before St Pattys Day and the bar was packed. We were seated and served right away. There was a live band. The food was great the only downfall was that there were as many children as adult.

Nice atmosphere - good food

By Canuckonashoestring |

We came in with a group of 13, 3 more than we had booked for, and the staff was extremely helpful in rearranging things to get us all at one table, even changing their usual traffic routes for servers to make it happen. Very much appreciated. The food was solid pub food - good, not great, but in good quantities - and the prices are quite reasonable, but mostly we appreciated the ambiance and the service staff.

Cold Drinks, Great Service, Great Food.

By Mirabroad4077 |

Stumbled upon this gem one afternoon while in University city. The place has a great look, excellent staff (they even wear name tags which stay which country or state they are from). The food was prompt and yummy. And the drinks were flowing. All around great pub.

Great location in University City

By Andrew K |

Friendly Irish pub with great service, abundant TV screens, and OK food, right next to the White Dog.

Nice Atmosphere and Fun

By DianeTheAdventurer |

I was here with my daughter, her roommate, and her parents. We had dinner and a few drinks. Fun atmosphere, lots of TVs, large menu to choose from.

Horrible service

By JesseHenry |

Waited forever to be waited on. Drinks took forever to come. Waitress mixed up our order with someone else so was late putting our meal order into the kitchen. Then mixed up two orders at the table. Food was mediocre at best. This is the third time we have eaten here (our daughter goes to Penn so it is close). Two out of three times, the service has been awful. Will not return.

Good eats, decent prices

By Maria H |

Went with my brother and sister. My sister & I shared a yummy salad that was huge. My brother & sister shared wings. I had a delicious sandwich. We were seated immediately. The service was good & friendly. The prices are especially good for Philadelphia. Second time there as I requested since I enjoyed my first time. Close enough to the Penn Presbyterian hospital to walk, but we drove the second time. Metered parking on the street.

Took a day trip

By Rodney B |

Me and my boyfriend took a day trip to the zoo from Maryland and after stumble upon New Deck Tavern. We had such a nice meal would so eat there again.

Nice meal

By kris096 |

Service was excellent, food was okay. Went with fish n chips, Guinness, all done speedily and hot. Not the best, but it did the trick.

One of our Favorite Pubs in Philly

By al3atross |

We visited the New Deck Tavern in October for the first time. Since then we have been visiting at least once a week. This is a ver friendly place. Their food and choice of beverages are great. The service is excellent. We feel that we are in a cozy place. We suggest chicken tenders, nachos supreme, fries, honey crisp chicken salad and classic chili soup. Happy hour is also good!

Irish Pub

By LeeAdelaide |

Looks very small from the street but actually a large Irish Pub. We had shepherds pie that was nearly as good as Mum's! Great prices.

Worst Cheese Steak in Philly Award

By Chuckfrombath |

Went to New Deck on the weekend and I was floored by the lousy cheese steak I got , I ordered the traditional cheese steak with Cheez-Wizz and fried onions, I got the steak and it looked like somebody forgot to fill the bun (there was a little bit of meat at the bottom of the bun) and it looked like the New Deck chef just brushed the Cheez-Wizz on. Horrible!!! I should have just driven to Pat's or Genos; Never again, But the fries were OK and I like pubs.

The gathering place

By lorims |

At university of penn talking some business classes and this seems like the place to go. Food is good. Service all depends on which waitress you get. We have had great ones and not do great ones. Definitely worth a visit while in philly.

Excellent food and friendly service

By Jgifas |

My son and I are visiting colleges and stayed around the corner. The concierge recommended as we needed someplace we could watch football. We got here and the hostess was so friendly. We asked for a table with a good view of the game. She immediately asked what channel we wanted and they changed one of the TVs for us. My son had a burger and it was done to perfection. The fries were awesome. I had the veggie wrap. Honestly it reminded me of French onion soup in a wrap. Omg. So so good. The cheese was stringy and the veggies were so tender. Our server was so sweet and attentive. I would definitely come back. Thanks for a lovely meal.

There are limits to EVERYONE'S time and patience!

By 475RebeccaB475 |

Coming into the restaurant at 5:30pm with a party of 6 on Saturday night there was no problem getting a table. We started out the evening responding to our server that "no, we were not under time constraints". Had we known that that meant 2 1/2 hours later we'd have to chase down our bill so that we could make it to our show- we would have responded differently! Not ONLY did our server forget one entree (delivered overcooked as the rest of the party was finishing their meals after having waited 10" to be courteous), but our dessert took 20 minutes to arrive and finally, we had to chase down our check. Our server was nice enough but minimally apologetic and for some reason thought we'd find it funny when he joked about the delay. (By the end of the meal the repeated delays almost felt intentional.) Despite our frustration, the server never offered any form of compensation for the poor service until asked about it. We later noticed that the 18% tip that was automatically applied for large parties and tacked onto our bill was in fact contrary to the stated policy of the restaurant. The receipt stated that 18% would be added for parties of eight (8) or greater…our party had only 6 people!!

Best turkey burger around

By MiaMarieMorrison |

This is your basic Irish pub. the Burgers and wings are really good. Big and Juicy. I LOVE their turkey burger and it comes with bacon (which you can opt out of). Great fish and chips as well.

Excellent Late Lunch Choice

By diningexpert1 |

Street parking not a problem at non peak meal hours. Friendly and attentive service. Turkey club sandwich generous size and very tasty. Substituted fresh steamed veggies for the standard fries. Glad we saved room for dessert-the bread pudding was awesome. By the time we left, the place was packed and the bar scene lively. Will return if in area again.

Nice Irish bar

By KampingKlown |

Good food , nice Menu! A nice range of items to choose from! Was there for a late lunch. Good beer selection!

Best Irish Pub ever!

By michellelynnp |

We have eaten at many 'Irish' Pubs. However, this was the best ever! The atmosphere (very cozy and friendly) and food were excellent! Prices were really great as well for a major city.

Great Service & Food, went back the next night!

By Merrymonk |

We selected this restaurant since the menu was interesting and the beer selection met our tastes; Madison was an excellent waitress who was patient and very informative. Before we left we noticed someone getting served the crab dip which enticed us to return the next evening; which was very good, the cheese steak egg rolls were also very good.

Great Philly Cheese Steak & Chicken Cheese Steak!!! Happy hour stars at 5pm. Great atmosphere for families, couples or friends.

A Decent Lunch

By GreenUnicorn |

After visiting the Penn Museum, our original idea was to have lunch at the White Dog Cafe. We arrived at 12:30 to learn there would be a 40 minute wait for a table. No thanks! We decided to give the nearby New Deck Tavern a try. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and the tavern continued to fill up over the course of our lunch. I opted for the salmon salad with grilled salmon, mixed greens, candied pecans, goat cheese, and tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette . The salmon portion was a decent size and cooked ok--perhaps just a bit over. I had the vinaigrette put on the side, and the salad was moist enough that really very little dressing. My husband chose the BBQ chicken chopped salad with chopped romaine, tomatoes, black beans, roasted corn, Monterey jack cheese tossed in a creamy, herb ranch dressing and topped with crispy tortilla strips and grilled BBQ chicken. His only issue was that it was not grilled BBQ chicken; it was grilled chicken over which some BBQ sauce had been drizzled. Both salads were reasonably priced, especially for the neighborhood. A glass of the house chardonnay was also a reasonable $7.00. Service was good throughout. The New Deck Tavern was a reasonable choice for lunch, and we might just wind up there again in the future.

Good service

By travelman1979_10 |

Came here with a group and sat in the basement. Service was good, but atmosphere wasn’t the best since downstairs. Food was good too. Would return

Nice atmosphere and good food

By bertillefirst |

I first went there during restaurant week, and liked it enough to come back when my family visited me from France. Both times I had crab cakes, which is really good. They are two nice-sized cakes, served with french fries, tartare sauce and coleslaw. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice evening weather.

Neat Place

By Richard K |

Had lunch on a hot afternoon. The crowd was mixed - workers, students & tourists .Quick pleasant service at reasonable priced. Although busy we were not rushed.Sandwiches were generous and well prepared.

Great Pub food and Great Bar

By opxus |

Great pub food for lunch or dinner, and at night a great place to grab some food while drinking!

Great food

By erryjay |

I ordered the Shepherd's Pie, which was delicious. Almost everything else looked great as well. Would definitely come back again.

Standard Irish Pub

By Keith P |

The food was fairly decent. They were confused on when their happy hour was actually happening. Overall the experience was a good one.

A welcomed spot for a little R & R!

By Pineapples-a-Plenty |

We were on our way to a spot next door to New Deck, and were impressed with the high energy here, and decided to stay put. A busy restaurant with indoor & outdoor seating options. The flavor of their decor is pub-like. A good feel overall ... Their menu is rather predictable. We went with the sheperd's pie, a classic burger, and the chopped salad. Pleased overall with the menu. As for the beverages, they have a delicious Lagunitas on tap - wow! We enjoyed, and would gladly go back ...

Good food and great atmosphere

By Mark K |

Good American pub food! Lots of ale, beer and bevorage choises. Interesting double street location so that you may entire from two different streets.

Your Basic Irish Pub. Seems to be an overflow restaurant for the White Dog Cafe. Took Drexel son here when we visited.

By Jean M |

The beet and arugula salad was dry and lacking significant amounts of beets. Son's cod sandwich was a winner. The draft Guinness beer had an "off" taste. Good amounts of beer to choose from.

Wonderful Service and Food

By Bella |

This is a good restaurant for a quick bite or apps and drinks. Service was quick and a good size menu. Wings and burgers were good and So was French Dip. Tables are a little close but could still hear everyone at the table. They have a bar area with tv and standing room. Try it you will come back.

Nice Ambience to Chill and Hang Out

By Dawn L |

Great place to hang out with friends and grab a few beers, alone or with friend. The ambience is warm and inviting. We had some snacks - apple pie and fries. Both are good!

Great food, good prices

By Rod B |

I ate here a couple times during my stay near the University. I had the Cheesesteak Eggrolls, would highly recommend them. The beer was cold and priced well. Happy hour 5-7, and they have late night specials (after 10) as well.

LOVE this place! REAL DEAL Irish Tavern!

By ISeeInHD |

Grabbed a beer and some dinner here while in the area staying at the Hilton Inn at Penn (2 blocks away). This is a fantastic neighborhood, nestled within the University of Penn and Drexel University. And this Tavern is one of the best - if not THE best - Irish tavern I've been in! The made me a proper Black and Tan and the Shepards Pie here was the closest I've ever had to that of my grandma's growing up. Took me back 25 years! Don't miss this if you're in the areas. And it has a wonderful wold world vibe varying floor levels and wood millwork everywhere. Very warm environment. Don't pass it up!

Good place on the Penn campus

By bronxboy559 |

Good place to have a drink or grab a bite to eat. Lots of beer options. Menu has some Irish pub fare as well as burgers, fajitas, crab cakes, etc. Prices pretty reasonable. Outside tables allow you to watch people walking by.

Good food, fun location

By TravelerProfSue |

We were staying in University City (West Philly) and stumbled on this bar/restaurant one night. My husband was peckish, so he had some chicken strips which were good enough he said he'd go back - which we did a few days later. We watched the NCAA game while enjoying good beer and food. It is a typical campus pub - with undergrads and bar food, but a solid choice in the neighborhood. It also has outdoor seating in good weather on a fairly quiet road.

very pretty pub in a great location in University Citye

By Angela J |

It had a relaxed atmosphere and provided good service. Very pretty decor. A great place to meet up with your college student on a family visit.

Nothing special

By kkmk |

This restaurant was ok on all levels. Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out or made it unique. It seems like the sort of place to go for tavern food that serves its purpose or if you are into beer.

Great service, meh food

By Jilary |

It was an abnormally warm day in February and we wanted to eat outside, but all the tables were taken, so they sat us inside by some open windows, which was very nice. Our server was very pleasant too, but unfortunately none of us really enjoyed our food. It was very greasy and just not what we were hoping it would be. I got a veggie burger and it was mushy and just ok. My mom got fish & chips and barely ate any of it, her wine also wasn't very good unfortunately.

A place to stop by

By Sam S |

Stopped by here for lunch. I like their Irish inspired dishes, tried the bangers and mash (lots of mash for a few bangers). My SO had a pretty good Philly cheese steak sandwich and the fries are a little addictive with the ketchup. Service was good and price decent.

Ambience and great food

By sueg807 |

This is a great spot to eat, drink and have fun with friends. Lunch, dinner or just drinks with food at the bar. Lively place. We were here for Home coming weekend for Penn and it was busy but staff kept up with everyone. Great service. For lunch we had a Rueben sandwich and Chili with salad. At the bar, drinks and bar food that was delicious. Overall a fun place and it's walking distance to Franklin Field and the campus!

Great atmosphere and cheap yummy food

By SAkk427 |

My friends and I come here often, its a great pub-style restaurant in University City. The food here is very good (highly reccomend the supreme nachos, cheese fries, and the fajita chicken sandwich). The food and drinks here are also pretty cheap (avg price per person is $13). The atmosphere is also pretty chill and laid back; you see groups of people have a good time but you can also see people in the corners just relaxing or studying. My only complaint is that they confuse or make mistakes with order quite often, but they're also always willing to fix whatever mistakes there might be. Great casual place!

Nice casual dining

By Kristen D |

Their food is good and they have a nice selection of drinks . Service is friendly. Nice indoor and outdoor dining.

Good eats in university city

By Scott H |

Picked this based in trip advisor reviews. Good pub food and large selection of draft beers. Close to Drexel &you Penn. Giod value for location

Good place to eat in University City

By NTP66 |

My friends and I at work go to New Deck at least once a week, and all of us enjoy it. The service is great, waiters/waitresses are all friendly, and the food is good. Being that this is in the heart of Unievrsity City, and on Penn's campus, nobody should be surprised that this is a local college spot. It's worth the visit, so don't let that deter you from enjoying New Deck.

Nice place

By stephanie m |

Stopped here after going to Penn museum. Food was good, really liked the onion soup and the corned beef. Menu does not have a huge selection, but its not bad and i am sure it caters to college crowd. Good beer and drink selection and nice atmosphere.

A basic beer joint

By rokkap |

New Deck proved a basic beer joint, with nothing to write home about. Beer was fair, food Ok, service likewise.

Great lunch spot when you visit Independence Hall

By IvorB3 |

This is the perfect lunch place to pair with a visit to Independence Hall. I met my sister there, and we had a terrific time, and some very delicious pot pies. Our waitress Alyssa (dressed in Colonial garb), was especially friendly and helpful.

Great Alternative to Pregame Tailgate

By janbK6058QR |

We were to gather near Franklin Field for a pregame tailgate - but the weather was raw- rain and snow...in April... So we moved out group indoors to New Deck Tavern. A wonderful spot as pubs go- friendly and attentive staff and the food ,although typical bar food was great for quick eats. There is outdoor seating - but with the tough weather - we were all inside! The venue was polite and opened a bit early to accommodate our crowd It's only a few blocks to the stadium area - a fun atmosphere - we will be back!

Great food! Great atmosphere!

By casey5508 |

Great place to stop for lunch or dinner or for a bite to eat before a Penn game - basketball, football or even baseball. Excellent bar food and they also have one of the best Bloody Mary cocktails!

Great Pub on U Penn's campus

By Quest50States |

We stopped in here while visiting U Penn's campus. It's a great little pub with typical pub fare. I always believe in getting pub food, like a burger and fries, but I would actually recommend the quesadillas here. The burgers and fish and chips were also good. Friendly service. Plan to be there for a good hour.

Not An Irish Pub!

By Archer W |

We were staying at a B&B in West Philly and decided on the New Deck Tavern thinking it would be a traditional Irish Pub. The food and beer were excellent but the live music was rock - so loud that we couldn't talk. They need to rethink what they are!

Becoming a favorite

By Lorie M |

Third time to New Deck and we enjoyed it as much as the first visit. Beer selection is huge and the food is very good. We recommend the sampler especially for the cheesesteak egg rolls. Nachos are great too. Highly recommend during a visit to university city in Philly.

Lunch at the pub

By UC1Scooter |

I had the bangers and mash - not bad - the sausage was a little more processed that I am use to, but the flavor was very good and the mashed potatoes were a good consistency. I would have that again. I had planned to eat there again, but my schedule would not allow (dropping daughter off for college - schedule was hectic). Service was pretty good considering how busy it was (we had lunch).

Post dinner drink

By Carl R |

We had 2 courvoisier vs and a bread pudding. $18.45. Loud busy sports pub. Very quaint building, good waitress, lots of sports tv's scattered around. Food, drink, and prices are average. Setting is great

Disappointing food, warm service

By NancyNicely |

We (supposedly) had confirmed reservations for 10 people, but no one at the restaurant seemed to know anything about us when we arrived. But tables were arranged for us quickly. Our waitress provided nice, competent service. I was assured the Philly Cheesesteak was authentic, but if so, I don't know what the fuss is about as it was disappointing. I probably should had stuck with the Irish food. My companions seemed to think their food was OK. My martini was adequate. As far as ambiance, it's an Irish bar.

Above average

By arkham |

Large classic neighborhood bar which serves good bar food, hires hard working bartenders, and fulfills its role very well. A little dive-y for the neighborhood, but that's part of its charm. Filled with UPenn students. Would be nice if they expanded their draught beer selection a little, though.

Burgers and Beer

By BusyLori |

Went here three years ago on a suggestion from a few people on UPenn's admission's staff. Was in Philly for a conference and decided to return. Burgers were excellent and the beer selection outstanding and cold. What could be better?

Worth The Trip

By lmcneill24 |

Great food and service. Well worth checking out if you're in town. Must try the bread pudding, it was delicious. Nicely decorated.

Have to agree with the rest- average food, nice staff

By ChpSheep33 |

The food was average to say the least, but so was the price. The staff was great, very friendly and a fun environment.

Chill weekday place

By Kelsey J |

I've heard it can be very crowded on the weekends and during football games, but I visited on the Monday night and had a nice dinner and a few beers. No rush, relaxed environment.

Sandwiches and beer

By G3760GOrichardm |

Service here is great Typical Irish menu Food ok But I ordered corn beef special Meat was cut too thick and it was chewy Bar staff made up for food

Ok food, but very unfriendly and inattentive server.

By Carla W |

Right from the time we were seated our server was fairly rude, it was our first time there but he didn't seem to happy about answering any questions we had about the menu. He brought our food to the table and then we never saw him after, he did not come to see how our food was or if we needed anything but then why should he when he knew he was already going to get a 20% gratuity that was automatically added to our bill! I totally disagree with this practice as gratuities are earned when you work for them!

Amazing classic Irish bar food

By TravelEric45 |

I have eaten at the New Deck Tavern 4 times now and every time the food and experience has been amazing. Don’t miss out on the Irish Curry. It’s amazing. Shepard’s pie isn’t made with local fresh Shepard’s but it is delicious.

Great spot for local beer and apps

By Patrick M |

Went here twice over a weekend back in January for a Penn-Princeton basketball game. Local beer selection was great and all of the apps that we ordered tasted delicious. Our servers over both visits were fantastic! Great sports bar.

Another "Irish" bar in University City which offers the usual pub fare. Has a pretty good happy hour though...

Another "Irish" bar in University City which offers the usual pub fare. Has a pretty good happy hour though & Quizo on Wednesday nights.

Decent Grub, Decent Price

By Sindilouwho |

We were exhausted after a day of hoofing it around Philly. We decided to walk from our hotel to the New Deck Tavern. My son had bangers and mash and I had a hot turkey sandwich. The place was beautifully decorated and had a friendly Philly old school charm. The waiter was prompt. The only complaint I had, if you could call it one, was that they left the front door open and I was freezing. Other than that, I'd definitely go back.

Great Pub Drink & Food near UPenn

By BestTravelsNow |

Stumbled upon this place just as we walked off the Penn campus. Could not have been more pleased. Several "half & half beers" that you cannot get just anywhere. I tried the Belgian Waffle (Guiness atop Hoegaaden) which was great! Burgers and salads are fantastic. If we become a UPenn family, I can already tell you that this will become one of our favorites on visits.

Nice Irish pub in West Philly

By MelissaNJ |

Nice place to chill, although mostly a college crowd as it's next to Drexel and on uPenn's campus. Great Shepherd's pie, good beer selection.

Good ol' American interpretation of Irish Pub. Good eats and funny atmosphere on the right days

By Edward W |

Love this place. Too many good nights spent here. They have pitchers, they have good burgers, and they have $1 taco thursdays (I think it was thursday though tuesday adhere's better to idiom). TV's galore if you don't want to hear what your table mates are gabbing about. And it's a marked improvement over the other pub in west philly, Blarney's.

Delicious and faxt

By HeartWarriorMom |

We walked to the tavern from our hotel as it was recommended by our hotel, and we decided to give it a try. It’s very close to the Sheraton University City which is good because being 36 weeks I didn’t want to walk far! The restaurant is decorated with lots of old charm and Knick knacks. We had sandwiches which were delicious and food came out quick!!! We were surprised with how fast we got it. Everything was fresh, and my husband said the beer was good.

Great Philly Cheesesteak and close to the train station

By Clare M |

Also great service and a good pub to relax in after a day sightseeing. Close to Penn University and other restaurants if you want 100% table service.

Good food, busy night

By JK Traveler |

We walked to the New Deck Tavern from our hotel - it was a busy Tuesday evening and very crowded. We were seated quickly but took a little while to get water and drinks. Food was quick, but came without silverware. We finally got forks, but the knives were still being washed. I got the second beer I ordered about the same time we got he check (I thought she had forgotten). The food was good, nothing special and I will give them benefit of doubt on service - staff was always very nice and friendly - maybe just an off night. I would be willing to go back if we travel back there for food and atmosphere.

Good comfortable and fun

By Jasper3962 |

Looking for a "Cheers" type experience? You can't go wrong visiting New Deck Tavern. Plenty of Irish atmosphere, cold beer and room to relax. I recommend and will be back again.

Great Pub Food!!

By Peter C |

Originally went to the White Dog Café next door... found their fare a bit too esoteric for our taste, so we came to this Pub and found the service and food to be wonderful and pricing reasonable.

Nice Irish Pub

By Lulubelle1212 |

My family had lunch at the New Deck Tavern yesterday afternoon. It was a very nice Irish bar with plenty of TVs to watch sporting events. Since it was a beautiful fall day, we decided to eat outside on the patio which was a great place to sit and people watch. Our waitress was excellent and very friendly. I was told that most of the servers are from Ireland so their accents are authentic. The menu was your typical bar/pub menu, burgers, wraps, salads, etc. I had a veggie wrap and my companions had the spicy chicken salad and a salmon salad. All of our meals were delicious. I do not get up to the University City section of Philadelphia that often but when I do, I will definitely stop into the New Deck Tavern again.

Excellent service! Fantastic Food!

By Paul G |

After strolling around the campus at the University, we found ourselves at the New Deck Tavern. We were fortunate to beat the rush (it was Homecoming Weekend!), and managed to get a table for four very quickly. The server was outstanding -- he made some great recommendations, and assisted with gluten-free selections for one of our friends. Even though they had a throng waiting for seats, we never felt rushed or pressured to leave. And the price was just right for a casual lunch.

Nice Trip To University Area

By TommyBoy94 |

Sometimes I'll take my Senior pass and ride the train out to University City from the western suburbs just to hoist a few at this congenial place. I have always found the place to be attentive and at times, frequented by interesting regulars. Bar is complete and when I have sandwiches or tavern fare I have never been disappointed. And before returning, there are book shops to conquer.

Good bar food

By mdbs24 |

This is a great pub to hangout have drinks, good food, and fun times. Everything on the menu is good. This place is good for private parties and casual business meetings. It gets crowded for happy hour. The beer selection is awesome. Cheers!

Excellent food and service

By Tammy M |

Tried this restaurant while in town for CHOP appointments. Loved it!! Food was excellent and reasonably priced. The cheese steak egg-rolls were sooo good. We will definitely be back next visit. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Location is great, super close to Inn at Penn and CHOP.

Good food and good cold beer

By Mark R |

Had lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Not very busy -- University out of session -- had a good mix of sandwiches and a couple of nice beers. Low key -- a good spot. Will be back

Great little sports bar

By tallgaloot |

This became our go-to place while we had a family member in the nearby hospital. Within walking distance and a great selection of food. Service was generally pretty good, we did have to go find our waiter once or twice to ask for things like water or ketchup, but not a problem. Good food, fun environment, went back a number of times in a short window.

Fun atmosphere with good food

By PirateGuy |

This is a "college" tavern with decent food and fun atmosphere. If you want to feel like part of the crowd, come to experience the New Deck Tavern!

Nice Bar and Grill

By Love2Explr |

Great social atmosphere - great place to watch a sporting event. Food was good. Apple dessert was great. Had free peanuts as well

Reasonable Restaurant in University City

By Natureholic |

It was a suddenly planned visit there. I had Mediterranean Salmon with mashed potatoes and spinach. Food prices are quite good compared to other restaurant in the city. Good for hang out and have drinks.

Cheesesteak Ambush

By Kent C |

Being on the hunt for the "best" Philadelphia cheesesteak while in Philly for a couple of days and I found a really good one here. In fact the #1 rated cheesesteak on Trip Advisor is Jim's and we were very disappointed in Jim's in comparison. The real surprise at New Deck Tavern is an energetic and talented young waiter who goes by the name of " Cooper" he is very knowledgeable about cheesesteaks and quite helpful in figuring out whether you go with the traditional cheese or "wiz" on your sandwich.

Standard

By Hesham S |

Ran out of just about everything we wanted on the menu. Food we did get was only ok. Drinks were standard. Was convenient for after work or else would have likely gone elsewhere.

Pretty good for a college restaurant

By mowlio |

The atmosphere was really great. The food was average, at best, and the service was not so great. I had the chicken sandwich and had to ask for the honey mustard that was supposed to come on the sandwich. The french fries were mediocre.

Great spirits

By Roberto D |

The tavern has a mystic atmosphere, with nice cosy decoration. The food is good to take it was appetizers with drinks.

Great option in University City

By Rudy Z |

Delicious food in an inexpensive casual environment! Standard pub fare with the Irish favorites! Will go again and again as I visit Drexel!

Great Irish Pub

By HibernianFemale |

Good food. Nice atmosphere. College crowd. Bathrooms leave a Lot to be desired though. At least the 'mna's did. :?

Great Irish pub

By Mike H |

My wife and I enjoyed a quick lunch at the tavern. Started with cheesesteak egg rolls. They were good. I had a burger , A+. My wife enjoyed the Reuben, I had a bite and it was great. Good service too. Place was very busy for 1p on a Friday.

Decent Place for Brews and Food

By westernfb |

It seems that we arrived when our server was about to end her shift, so we were left hanging for quite a while until we were able to flag down a replacement. Other than that, the service here was not bad (definitely friendly, if a bit slow). We had beer and cider, which was fine. Also had the appetizer sampler, which consisted of cheese steak egg rolls, chicken fingers, quesadillas and spinach dip. All were pretty good. Also tried the fish and chips, which was not bad. Overall, it was a solid, safe dining experience that was not nearly as pricey as some of the other places nearby. Nothing "wowed" me, but I would recommend this place as a fine, regular place to fill up your tank without busting your budget.

Great bar food

By Christopher |

Great bar food, indeed great burger, slow service, out of our first choice drink. Cold, cold, cold. No more free peanuts?

Great pub atmosphere!

By LCC00 |

Amazing food at a decent price with knowledgable and friendly waiters. We went on a monday night around 5 for dinner and found just the right-sized crowd- enough to give it some ambience but definitely NOT crowded. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

Eat here you will not be sorry

By Keith W |

Mushroom sandwich, shepherds pie, cheese steak, great beer list and fun loving staff. We went for lunch and stayed for a couple of hours and tried a number of food choices all good

Definitely a fan

By JohnG36 |

Was in town 2 days and ate there twice. I recommend the philly steak egg rolls. Awesome! Fish & Chips was standard and on my 2nd visit had a burger which was very good. Well priced and lots of TVs. Good casual place to watch a game.

Good Food & Beer selection

By mrnick9999 |

The atmosphere is a traditional tavern interior with large tv's. The beers on tap are numerous and offer wide selection of microbrews. The food is tasty. I love the fajita is my go to dish.

Not impressed & worst service ever !

By JadaKayOK |

This place was close to where I was staying & the reviews were good so I thought I'd give it a try. Bad decision! I ordered the Fish & Chips which is supposed to be a featured item. It was okay. Large portion. I did like the cole slaw. The fish was ordinary cod. It was good. The fries average at best. Some were soggy like they had sat for a while. The tarter sauce was supposed to be something special but tasted normal to me. The service was non-existent. Keith took my drink order & then came back for my order. I asked him something about the menu & he acted like he really didn't want to talk. He brought me my order & that was the last I saw if him for quite awhile. He never checked to see if I needed anything until I was well finished. I would have like a refill on my drink but by the time he came back around, I was just ready to go. Not the experience I had hoped for. Good luck if you go. Maybe you choice of food will be better & I hope your service is.

Terrible Service and Food

By Bella |

After a long day of traveling the hotel recommended this restaurant. Save your time and money. The service was terrible we had to ask the hostess and other waiters to find our waitress who then took over 10 mins to get water after the food finally came it was cold and tasteless. Go to another restaurant it’s not worth your money.

Can't go wrong

By mafels |

New Deck provides a solid option for standard pub food. Located very near Penn's campus, it has a college feel and a good environment for a quick lunch. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meal (from Shepherd's Pie and Fish 'n Chips to sandwiches and burgers) and the selection was perfect for a variety of tastes and needs. The beer list also appeared quite impressive! We were with a large-ish group and they did note that they couldn't run more than three credit cards per table. Many of us had cash so it wasn't an issue, but just something to be aware of.
