Real Chinese Food at Reasonable Prices

By MichaelS290 |

I visit this place often when I am in Chinatown. It is next door to the Foot Reflexology Center, which is great also. The food here ranges from spaghetti and meatballs and fried chicken to chow fun and tongue in curry sauce with corn over rice. Mostly Chinese eat here, but some brave tourists come. They are in for a treat. The food is reasonably priced and the waitress in the evening is very helpful. Here, you also get a slice of jello for dessert. I have tried many dishes and have not found a bad dish. This is an excellent place to eat, without any phony ambiance.

Great choice

We were hungry and wanted to eat in Chinatown. The decor is plain at best but the food was great. All our lunch selections came with soup and we got a complimentary dumpling too. Lunches come with tea too. Everything was made to order and you could taste the freshness.

Authentic Chinatown Meal

By amybethber |

Stop in for a delicious meal of roast pork. We stopped in for lunch and the local leaving whispered to us to try the roast pork lunch. We was so right, and it was delicious. The meal began with (and included) tea, soup and a scrumptious dumpling, but the pork with gravy, rice, and vegetables topped even that! If you get to Chinatown, make sure to save time to stop in for lunch or dinner. It's small inside, but the meal is well worth the wait.

An authentic Chinatown experience

I don’t look for the fancy, well-decorated restaurants when decided where to eat. I want “Grandma’s kitchen” with a store front. A place with 10 old Formica tables, and laminated menus. These are the places where I find the most flavorful, and inexpensive meals. We had potstickers, Kung Pao chicken with steamed rice, and hot tea. Everything was delicious. Our waitress was friendly and engaged in conversation. The place could have been a little cleaner, but that is the true Chinatown experience. The food was well-prepared and flavorful. Yum. Check it out.

A Trip Back to Past

So it was, as I walking down Jackson Street, in San Francisco's Chinatown, next to Grant Avenue, the tourist Mecca for all who come to visit this City! Waiting for my brothers in a booth, I scanned the menu. The prices were very reasonable, ranging from hamburger sandwiches, rice plates, special dishes to full dinner dishes, beverages and desserts. Its been a while since my college mates and I went to this restaurant in our younger days! What am I talking about! Its the "New" Lun Ting Café! The Only Americanized diner in Chinatown! Outside still looked the same, unattractive dirty window posted with its American and Chinese lunch and dinner menu, as people walked by down Jackson Street's wandering San Francisco hill! The locals, such I , would know it is this place whenever someone says to meet and eat at the "Pork chop House!" Cause a few decades ago, it had the best pork chop meals in Chinatown. But today it has been turned over to the daughters of the original owner and a change of kitchen chef. So the culinary tastes may not be the same. However, they are very friendly, open, with the best of customer services one can find in this community! One side of the wall has dining booths, while the other side of this café has single seat counter. And, the middle of the café has four table, each sitting about four to five persons. Aside from the kitchen and staff changes, not much have changed except for the dining area. Its a very unpretentious eatery, serving only good food! There were many locals eating during dinner time. There were a few tourists poking their heads in this cafe just to check it out. They may have wander down to ABC Bakery Cafe, which is brightly lite and modern more to their liking than this cafe! Prices here for call rice plates are from $7.99 to $9.99, for choices from chicken, beef tongue, lamb, veal, on and on with rice or spaghetti with vegetables. From my traveling across USA, Europe and Asia, aside from tour groups, I would recommend to try a novel experience by eating at this café. Its cheap and real !

A real Chinatown experience

We were in Chinatown and wanted some authentic Chinese food. How to choose from the hundreds of options? Another review site recommended this place. CASH ONLY. It's not fancy nor does it cater to tourists. We were the only English-speaking table in the place. But the food is tasty, cheap and the portions are very large. I guess it's known for its roasted pork and pork chops. I got the roasted pork over rice and it was good but did not taste like typical Chinese food. My daughter ordered the teriyaki flounder and bean sprouts, and it was excellent. The best thing were the dumplings that came with our meals. OMG! Service was efficient but food came out when it was piping hot, not all together. Total bill for four lunches and lots of leftovers - $36 before tip. The restroom was not great, so plan accordingly. My family loves new adventures, and we thought this was a fun and tasty way to experience true Chinatown.

Outstanding authentic Chinese food with no tourists.

Great Chinese restaurant without the fancy atmosphere. Good value, outstanding food & service.

Good Roast Pork

By chanyu1 |

This cafe location has been around for a long time and the roast pork is really not as good as before when it was know as Lun Ting Cafe but it is still a decent meal for the price. Do not expect much in terms of service but you do get pretty good value for the price, and it is filling. Try the roast pork over rice with brown gravy which is what they are known for...

Go here for great Chinatown food

By David H |

We came here for dinner in Chinatown. This was an incredible find. I highly recommend this. we got the combination B for 2 people. The soup was hearty. The fried rice was wonderful. They substituted sweet-and-sour chicken. This was the best sweet-and-sour chicken I have ever had. Large chunks of chicken. It wasn't just breading. The sauce was awesome. I would highly recommend this place to anybody.

Delicious Dinner

We stopped in for a quick dinner, the food is local and delicious. The gyozos/pot stickers were delicious. The beef, and veggies were delicious and also the pork chop with the fish. The food is worth the money and I would recommend this quaint restaurant.

Comfort Food

It's a Chinatown institution that's been open for over a century, last of the old school Chinese-American greasy diner that still exist today, their signature and famous roast pork is very juicy, moist and tender, usually I prefer the curry sauce over the brown sauce, they also have their own version of the loco moco that you ask for a fried egg with the hamburger steak with brown gravy over rice, our 4 family generations has been dining here since the early 50's, they now have outdoor dining along with takeout orders

Real home style Chinese cooking

By Ebert K |

Been going here for 50 years and will go 50 more. This is the kind of food that Chinese Grandmothers and mothers make. When you walk thru the doors, its like walking back in time. From the booths, counter, table and chairs, even the wall decorations, it's old school. For me, it feels like home. The owners, cooks and waitress's remind me of Auntie's and Uncle's when I was younger. The foods great but not necessarily good for you. Anything that tastes that good, can't be good for you, huh? Each meal starts off with a cup of soup of the day and ends with a small square of red or green jello. Price's are good and very affordable for the locals. This one of the bachelors food places from the old days. I will continue to eat here till I can't.

Daughter's dumpling choice

By JayhawkJim |

While walking thru Chinatown - my daughter insisted on getting some dumplings. We stopped by Lun Ting & the staff was very friendly. Wanted something really quick & unfortunately, that didn't happen. My guess is that they prepare everything to order - based on watching the kitchen - and it just took slightly longer than expected. Dumplings were gone very quickly - so no complaints about quality or quantity.

Homey Chinese American Restaurant

By Arnold C |

This is one 2 -3 remaining Chinese American restaurants located in SF's Chinatown. The roast irk meal is the signature dish as well as the grilled pork chops ( Chinese refer to the restaurant as "PORK CHOP HOUSE. There is a wide selection of meals as well as the salted isn and chicken morsel fried rice. This is a family restaurant of the 2nd generation!! An institution located across from there World Famous " Red's Bar"!!!!

Left before touching any food

By Xavier P |

Looked fine, got a table for 4 just next to the kitchen. Went to the restrooms before ordering and... had a too close look at the kitchen. Never saw anything so disgusting and filthy ! My appetite was gone in a second. We left and I got charged 2 dollars for the restrooms. Will publish this in all languages as a general health and safety warning.

$8 for dinner

By Neil C |

I had one night in SF and was wandering a bit aimlessly around Chinatown looking for somewhere where I could get dinner on my own. I was about to pass this old café when I spotted that there was a lot of elderly folks sitting around a communal table, and it caught my attention. I went in. The greeting and service was friendly. Many reviews speak of the waitress - well I think there is one, and yes she makes you feel very welcome. I ordered a main dish and I wanted lots of vegetables with it. Before it came a soup, then some dumplings, as much tea as I could drink. The main dish surpassed my expectations - very tasty and a good sized portion. They then offered me a small desert - jelly or some cake. $8! Where in the US would you be expected to be fed for $8! Great little place - check it out.

Not Fancy but Excellent Food

By MichaelS290 |

I eat here everytime I visit San Francisco. Where else can you get roast pork with rice or beef tongue with curry sauce and canned corn. Prices are reasonable and service efficient. Next door to great foot massage place.

Simple good food

We saw a crowd around here and figured this would be a good place for lunch. It's a no frill dining location but the food more than makes up for it. Cash only,

Old time Chinatown diner

By Arnold C |

There are not many ChineseAmerican diners left in SF. Many have been family run and children did not want to work. This is a 3rd generation family run no frills diner!!!🙏🙏🙏

Don't judge on looks - judge on taste

By Don H |

The grilled chicken is like chicken teriyaki and was amazing. The roasted pork was good... and the pot stickers were fresh and wonderful. The kitchen mess and the restroom area might have you thinking of turning away... but dont. Our waitress - Connie - was great.

Cheap, good portions and friendly.

Really tasty food, would recommend the roast pork or grilled chicken. Very friendly host who is happy to help.

Amazing meal: unique and delicious in an unpretentious setting

By rh24 |

This was chosen by our son too and he accompanied us for the dinner. He said it epitomized a working class eatery in Chinatown. His conjecture was that the spaghetti on their menu was most likely intended to attract non-Chinese workers. too. I assume that it was a nod to America for the local Chinese. We were amazed by the quality of the food -- we had a complimentary soup that was clear with pieces of veg, likely chayote squash and carrots. It had a subtle aroma to it -- we polished it off with gusto! And then there were the complimnetary dumplings -- fried -- not elegant or delicate but just so well made and fresh. My son ordered the spaghetti with pork chops. Granted the tomato sauce on it (and the corn) must have come out of a can or a bottle but the pork chops were exquisite. I had the oxtail with dried tofu -- absolutely divine. And my husband, who is a bitter melon fan, said he had never tasted beef and bitter melon so good. If an ode to a restaurant has to be written it should be to New Lung Ting Cafe: aka The Pork Chop House

Typical Chinese-American cafes of its time, satisfying comfort food

By George L |

Atmosphere is a hole in the wall, typical of Chinese-American cafes for its day, a dying breed. Their Lamb Stew and Oxtail Stew, available with tofu, each for under USD 8, are satisfying comfort food. I buy mine's to go and have several meals out of them. Prime Rib also available. Open Thursday thru Tuesday till 9:30 PM except Wednesday when they close at 8 PM. Restroom downstairs door doesn't lock. Waitress friendly. Cash only.

A Comforting Go-To Spot After Every Trip

By Miss P |

Whenever we get back from a family vacation, we always make a stop at this restaurant and order our usual favorites. It’s a comforting tradition that brings us the familiar flavors we crave after being away from home. Roast Pork with Gravy – We always ask for extra gravy over the rice. This dish is reliably good, never misses a beat, and always hits the spot. 5/5 Lamb Stew with Gravy – Same gravy request here. This one can vary a bit depending on the cut of meat. Most of the time, it’s hearty and the portions are very generous. Once in a while, though, we get a serving with too many bones and not enough meat. Still, the flavor is great and we always find ourselves ordering it again. 4/5 As for the service – it’s straightforward and efficient, like many traditional Chinese spots. Don’t expect small talk or a warm smile, but the food comes out fast, packed well if you’re taking it to go, and the bill is delivered promptly. The focus is on the food, and they do that really well. 4/5
