This is a breakfast and lunch only place. It is often crowded but best if you go after 12:00. I get the corned beef or pastrami sandwiches and they are both very good and reasonably priced. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are right. This is a great place for lunch.

Been here many times, including a catered party for 50 people. Great ethnic place. Many traditional Jewish dishes. Busy place but they get the food out.

Our son took us there on Christmas Day mostly because it was the only place open but he assured us it would be worth the wait and he was right. It had the feel of a local diner and offered a verity of options at a great price. The first thing you’ll notice is the smell of fresh baked bagels, it was amazing but I opted for the blueberry pancakes and OMG they were the best I’ve ever had! The breakfast filled the plate and left us full, satisfied and happy! Everything is made from scratch and made to order. The older gentleman who owns the place makes everyone feel like family. Whether you eat there or get bagels to go, you won’t be disappointed.

This is Houston's destination for bagels, but surprisingly the grits they serve are definitive excellence, which you wouldn't expect at a bagel venue. The weekday breakfast special rarely disappoints; the service is fast and cordial with plenty of coffee refills, and it's one of the few places I venture to savor a perfectly poached egg. A bit crowded some mornings--hard to get a booth, but always an upbeat atmosphere to start your day.

Just want to start off by saying I’m not biased because I’m from NY and travel about. But guess it’s no shock when a business names itself as “New York” trying to ape a taste or style that is not natural because it’s not located in New York but attempts to attract customers. The problem here is not so much the actual bagel, which wasn’t all that good or New York-ish, but the service was just crap, at least on that morning. So here’s the way it went. My wife and I were looking to grab a quick bite before hitting the road and searched for a bagel shop of which among many Einstein shops this one popped up. Ok, shame on me for going to the “NY” label. The shop has two fronts, upon walking in one looks like a NY bagel shop with a good range of bagel choices. We asked for two pumpernickels with cream cheese. Sounds simple. The lady told us “oh, for that (?!) you have to next door and order.” Through the adjoining door is the restaurant. Okayyy. So we journeyed through that door and waited patiently for someone to notice us. Finally we asked again for two pumpernickel bagels with cream cheese. The lady grabbed a pen and order pad and began to scribble down these complexities.she then announced “do you want them sliced?” Hmmm, puzzled by her inquiry I politely responded “How else would the cream cheese make it into the bagel?” She started back at me a bit stymied, gripping her pen. So my wife blurted out “yes, of course please sliced with cream cheese, and can one be toasted and the other not.” Again the lady made additional copious notes and handed off our paperwork to another worker who disappeared off to the rear of the shop. We sat down and waited, and waited. Almost 20 minutes later she appeared holding a brown bag. She grips her order paper and tallies up “ $12.67 please.” My asks her for details because from where we come from two bagels with cream cheese would be about $6 total. The lady details that each bagel is $2.95 and each cream cheese $2.95 add-on so $5.90 each plus tax. Ok, give her the cash and out the door we go. We get into our car, open the bag looking to taste them NY style bagels and Lo and behold the bagels are actually sliced but no cream cheese applied! Instead the cream cheese is in two small quarter-size plastic containers…and not even a plastic knife to solve this. So my amazed wife goes back in and quizzes the lady who has no intelligent response as to why an order for two bagels with cream cheese does not get you two bagels with cream cheese applied, tosses her a plastic knife. Ok, so we apply the cream cheese, bite into the bagel and guess what, not even close to a NY bagel. Drama over.

Almost always busy but wait the short wait if there is one. Consistent good service and good food! You won't be disappointed.

Love this place! We have been coming here for years. Always busy and always good! Neighborhood deli. I always order nova, eggs, and onions

This deli has been in this neighborhood for more than 40 years and is a tradition. Very good deli menu and excellent service. There is an adjacent bakery with fantastic bagels and bialys .

OK, the cafe is great for breakfast. Has been for many, many, many years. Old style deli where everything is cooked to order exactly how you like them. And of course, you can get their own bagels however you want them. We live about 30 minutes away, so the real reason for our visits is to stock up on REAL bagels. Whatever they do is the way I remember them in NY. High gluten (whatever that means but gluten free folks are out of luck on these), they have just the right chew-ability, and they have all the right flavors. I buy 2-3 dozen and freeze them. They will even give you the freezer bags and ties. Sometimes they forget, just ask and they will pop them in. They defrost perfectly in the microwave (30 seconds at 50%) and toast up great. Having said that a few always disappear on the way home because the aroma in the car from the warm ones is irresistible. I remember about 20 years ago my son went with us and by the time we got home the bag was half empty! I almost turned around to get more! And by the way, don't plan on stopping on the way home from work to get bagels. They are a morning and lunch place and close between 3-4 in the afternoon. I suggest going for breakfast and picking up the bagels then. Weekends are great.

My husband and I tried NY Bagel Cafe & Deli for Saturday breakfast, and we will definitely be back! We heard they have really good bagels, and they did not disappoint (good taste, good texture and good cream cheese). The hubby ordered a ham and cheese omelet with home fries, and I got a specialty sandwich - corned beef, pastrami and turkey on sourdough with crinkle cut fries. Plus, we both ordered plain bagels with plain cream cheese, and the coffee was good and plentiful. The service was quick and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. This is not a big fancy place...just an old school neighborhood deli, and we loved it!

Always enjoy the food and often bring my grandchildren when in town. I have a special waitress and she takes care of me and the grandkids and knows exactly what everyone wants. We mostly have breakfast foods and all is delicious. Very popular on weekends so it is very busy than.

We were looking for a new spot for lunch. Houston Eatery reviewed so we decided to try it! We had breakfast (omelet ) , a Reuben and some onion rings. Everything is made from scratch. Omelet was incredible and HOT on the inside. onion rings quantity was not worth 4.25. Reuben was was amazing with spot on coleslaw and a pickle. Let’s talk bagel and rye bread (on Reuben )THE BEST TASTING BAGEL of my life Same with the bread. As we were paying the owner Ed stopped by to meet us and explain the history . Just walked out so surprised and thankful to come upon this gem. Way to go Ed and Michael !! We missed out for so long.

There are many places in Houston where you can get bagels. However, no other place approaches the quality and freshness of the bagels made here. Most of the time, when you walk into this bagel shop, the bagels are still hot. The inside is juicy, the outside crisp. The selection of toppings is wide, although there is nothing better than their plain bagel or the ET. Ask for extra toppings spooned from the bottom of the cases. The bakery also offers flavored cream cheeses of their making: the smoked salmon and the chives are two of our favorites.

Cozy spot for inexpensive breakfast or lunch. Breakfast specials can include omelettes, pancakes, bagels, etc. Love the potato pancakes. Meals are served at small tables or at diner counter. Service is quick. Very busy on Sat and Sunday mornings.

Having lived in NY, I feel qualified to say these bagels are the real deal. They are warm so if you plan to travel home with a dozen bring a container to spread them out. Deli and small café. Kosher. Located in strip mall in front of Wal-Mart.

Best place in Houston by far for New York style bagels. The dinner also has a very eclectic old school Brooklyn feel with amazing turkey bacon. The eggs are good and not overwhelming like most other breakfast places in Texas. The coffee also for some reason tasted better here may be it's just the feeling of being back home in the big city

I recently paid a visit to this place and it was a pleasant change from your typical bagels or breakfast spot. It had a mom and pop feel with old fashioned booths and tables. Service was prompt and friendly. And the food spoke for itself everything from the variety of bagel spreads to their delicious home fries! I will surely return to sample more of their foods.

Every time i come here i enjoy it..the neighborhood atmosphere... and the great breakfasts. My friend and I had the daily special for 5.79...two eggs any style, a large bagel with a side of potatoes ,grits or potato pancake...the pancake was great..and the bagels are the best..will continue to frequent this place

The bag my delicious bagels came in says this address, but I noticed there are reviews for the other "side" of this business, and they are actually one in the same. So, head to 9724 Hillcroft, and you'll find the Café and the Bagel Bakery side by side. The food is good, the waitstaff friendly, and the place is very clean and relaxing. My omelette, grits and bagel were perfect. Bring cash, they do not accept credit cards, but the prices are very reasonable. There is a menu of sandwiches and soups, and breakfast is also served all day.The waffles and pancakes we saw served looked great, too. After your meal, walk through the connecting door to the Bagel Bakery and choose from many great bagel flavors, freshly made. Nice looking muffins, but we enjoyed choosing rye, blueberry, cranberry walnut, banana, and more, from just the bagel menu! Go and enjoy!

We go for the authentic New York style bagels but love to eat breakfast here! Delicious bagels!! I get a dozen every time we go. Had the Denver Omelette with Home Fries & a Sun Dried Tomato Bagel. All of it was delicious! You better get there early on the weekend or you may have to wait a while but it will be worth it!

I've been going to The Bagel Shop since I was 5 years old (seriously, my parents realized I had the chicken pox while I was sitting in one of their booths). The food has been consistently great for over 20 years, the service is always fast and friendly, and even though there can be a bit of a wait on Saturday and Sunday mornings - it's always worth it. My go-to order is the BLT on a toasted everything bagel, easy on the mayo, add american cheese, no slaw extra pickle, with a side of *crispy* home fries. When I'm in a breakfast mood, it's 2 eggs over easy with *crispy* home fries, a toasted everything bagel, and cream cheese with a side of bacon. Helpful hint: always order the home fries crispy!

I used to purchase bagels at this shop when I lived in Houston 28 years ago and was so glad to see that they were still around. The quality of their product is as good now as I remembered from back then. Only difference is they have expanded the bagel flavor choices. They still sell a baker's dozen (13 bagels) and although the price has increased, I thought $11.50 was a reasonable price. The restaurant next door is still a very popular destination and will plan to go back on my next trip to Houston.

Best bagels in Houston. This place has been there forever. They make bagels the proper way, boil then bake. Sooooo good, hardish crust on the outside, chewy goodness inside. Many flavors. They also sell house made cream cheese flavors, lox, and have a small restaurant next door.

Real bagels, boiled then baked. Have them once and you won't be able to stomach frozen crap like einsteins anymore.

The Good - Excellent matzo ball soup, good service, low prices, OK corned beef (but just OK). The Bad - Corned beef sandwich was served on soggy seedless "rye." Not at all what is normally served at a Jewish deli. Skimpy sandwich, but expected for such a low price. Bacon was very greasy - waitress told us bacon was "kosher style!" The Bagels - Pretty much no one makes a good bagel south of Baltimore, and these are no exception. The inside is acceptable but the outside is soft. Not a bad bagel, but not worth going out of the way for. Purchased a half dozen and asked if they would slice them. Was told "No" in no uncertain terms. Summary - If you want a real Jewish deli in Houston, go to Kenny and Ziggys. If you want a decent imitation at half the cost, go to NY Bagel.

Extremely negative experience st this establishment. First the server stated the kitchen never got our order due to the internet after we had been waiting over an hour. Then magically did get sent after we asked to adjust the order. Waited another twenty minutes and this man or manager comes out with our sorry looking plates of food. No apology or anything. When we asked what is the difference between nova lox and regular lox he said one was saltier than the other and that was no exaggeration. It was so salty like someone dumped a whole canister of Morton’s on it. I wish I had taken a photo of my skimpy sandwich and soup combo, but by that time I was so hungry I just ate it. The pastrami sandwich was soggy and the lentil soup tasted bland and from a can. The bagels were average and lox was inedible. I regretted that we just didn’t leave after the first mishap, it would have saved us from being disappointed and treated so poorly. The manager just kept making excuses and shifting the blame on the crowds or even us when we didn’t ask to switch the lox with the server who disappeared after she “resent” our order. He said everything is homemade as if that is an excuse for bad food. The only thing homemade about this place were their excuses.

This is a great place to pick up delicious bagels. (We especially like the cinnamon with raisin bagels.). Reasonable, relaxing, and yummy!

Every year for the last 20 years when I am in Houston I go here at least once in the visit. 2018 is no exception. I had the mid week daily special of eggs bagel a and potatoes. It is exceptional value in addition to being very tasty. Most people will find the food quantity is more than enough. The atmosphere is pure authentic New York deli style right down to the service. You feel like you are in good old NY when you are inside. The adjacent attached takeout bagel shop is also in character. The bagels are phenomenal.

Their shirts say "best bagels in Texas", which is a BOLD moniker, but it's one that's well deserved! Looks and feels like a cafe straight outta NYC, with that familiar hustle and bustle that always brings a smile to my face. Coffee is hot, cheap, and strong; just the way I like it. Bagels come in 22 different toppings (or plain), and are baked in store. Breakfast is delish, and served till closing. Tell a friend, tell the world!

This is one of those neighborhood places that you go to again and again. It's busy, crowded and sometimes noisy. On weekends there is a line to get seated by ten am. Breakfast is offered whenever and their matzo ball soup will cure you of whatever ails you. Bagels come in many flavors and are baked in the adjoining bakery. The coffee is good, but if you want splenda or equal, you have to ask. This is family owned and operated and many of the waitresses are long term employees.

This place is always busy for good reason. Large menu with all deli favorites. We usually order eggs and lox or a triple salad combo with bagels. We also take bagels home from the bakery. The owner is very friendly and remembers everyone. A neighborhood gen!

This place has been here forever, and those who know, go often. The bagels are amazing, and the food is delicious as well. They can get pretty busy, but worth the wait. Be sure to get a baker's dozen on your way out!

This had been our Go To spot for Bagels in Houston since we were little kids in the early 80's. The bagels had always been good. They are now glutenous, doughy, heavy and sticky. Almost like you're are eating under cooked dough. What happened??? This was always our neighborhood breakfast place and where we bought bagels. My sister came to visit us in the NW and I asked her to bring me a dozen bagels...I was quite disappointed. It appears the new owners changed something in the recipe...so sad! Will not be buying bagels from here any longer.

The bagels are hand made in house, which is a plus. We didn't get fresh bagels to take out from the bagel store; we sat down in the adjacent restaurant instead. So we were surprised that we could get waitress service for just bagels, because that doesn't happen in NYC! Another plus. Fast service, courteous waitress, good flavor with the everything bagels we ordered. Still on the plus side. BUT these born and bred Big Apple dwellers were very disappointed that the bagels were toasted; that made us wonder if we got yesterday's leftovers. Don't forget, we are from New York and know about these things! Also, the bagels weren't prepped, we had to make our own sandwiches; again, not a NY thing. The coffee was leaning on the side of the cup, that is to say, pretty weak. So to sum it up: Tasty? Yes. New York Style? Not really: maybe in size and style, but not in presentation or freshness. Note to owner: please don't toast bagels unless requested. This review might have been better had we received unquestionably fresh bagels today.

You wake up craving fresh baked bagels with breakfast. I love the stinky or everything bagel, toasted, butter and cream cheese, with a corn beef, mushroom, onions, cheese omelette with a latke/potato pan cake. Sure it sounds like a lot of food, but how often do you crave fresh bagels? Right next door is the bakery making fresh round and long bagels, challah, and an assortment of cream cheeses. I bought a dozen stinky bagels for emergencies. Stay hungry amigo. El Gordo.

Had a delicious lunch - chopped liver on a bagel and pastrami on rye. Brought back memories of restaurants I enjoyed while living back east. Good variety, price and excellent service.

Trying to find a decent bagel anywhere outside of New York is a challenge. This place has them! Love the atmosphere and the staff is incredibly friendly. Lots of locals seem to frequent which is always a good sign. I had breakfast at the counter in the back. Had the Venetian omelet with spinach, feta and oregano. Delicious! And of course loaded up with some bagels to go! Highly recommend and incredibly affordable!

Every year when I go to houston I have my cousin take me here. The combination of their bricks and mortar palce, food, service and ambiance is pure deli at its best. Prices are reasonable. Quantity is large. Fresh bagels - oh yeahhhhh. The short wait in line is well worth it. If you are in Houston, do not miss this place. It is not fancy-it is pure deli- pure delicious. GO - GO -GO

I am amazed that so few reviews exist for this Houston establishment. It is very small but the wait is never extreme. Amazingly they move people in and out smoothly. They certainly have/had the ability to expand the footprint, but there is something inviting about the size. I always get the eggs onions and Nova...they have amazing sandwiches at reasonble prices. Ed, one of the owners seems to know everyone in the place and if he does not, he'll meet you. Cannot say enough good things about the place.

These are the real deal and they are affordable and the tastiest. Fast service. The place cannot be beat. Got them to go and will get bagels here every time I am in Houston.

This bagel shop makes the very best bagels in town! Crispy on the outside, tender inside, they melt in your mouth. From the plain, through the poppy seed, sesame seed and ET, they exceed in quality, freshness and flavor every other bagel you can find in Houston. The restaurant also offers egg platters, omelets, corned beef, lox, pancakes and waffles, burritos, burgers and other sandwiches. salads and soups, in addition to fresh coffee. The place is not much to look at and service is OK, but the food is fresh and generously portioned.

I've been coming to this restaurant for over 40 years & I love it. The long wait tells you something, this is a local legend. It's the only place I've ever been that cooks their egg whites with Pam, & their unhealthy choices are also great. It takes you back to the 70's. They have the same wallpaper, cramped seating, & decor from the day they opened. Eddie makes you feel like family, & the waitresses have worked there forever. Try to sit at the counter, this is my favorite people watching place. The bagels are the best in town, & if you're sick, don't miss the homemade chicken noodle. soup.

My friend saw the restaurant through fresh new eyes—we have been going forever! Service and food—and atmosphere—all perfect. Great little bagel shop and so much more. Western omelette and veggie cream cheese with pumpernickel bagel—-yum!

The bagels are the freshest and most delicious in Houston- They are authentic New York style bagels- Firm crisp outside, soft and spreadable on the inside. I think the secret is that they boil them first and then bake them, so they never taste like a tasteless lump of dough!! Their daily breakfast special is wonderful- 2 eggs, choice of sides, bagel of your choice ( try the rye or the black-and-white, simply divine), cream cheese and jelly too- all for less than $5. A delicious bargain.

This is the grab-and-go version of the adjacent coffee shop and is great for when you need to quickly pick up some bagels and schmear on the way to work, a party or church/synagogue, and don't have the time to dine in the restaurant next door. New York Bagels offers many types of bagels: plain, sesame, poppy, everything, blueberry, banana-walnut, cinnamon-raisin, Asiago cheese, jalapeno, salt, Bialys, and more, and sells individual and large sized cream cheeses and jellies in the refrigerator by the front door. You can also pick up drinks (milk, sodas, water) and packages of lox and nova so you don't have to make an additional trip to the grocery store for the extras. Bagels are $1 each and a baker's dozen is $12. The only slightly annoying thing I've experienced when picking up to-go bagels from here recently, is that the last TWO times I ordered here (on back-to-back weekends, I might add) I was picking up bagels for a group, and I included a banana-walnut bagel for myself. My entire order was correct, save for my particular bagel. The first time I was given a blueberry by mistake, and the second time I was given a cinnamon raisin. How did they get this wrong, twice? After the first mistake I should have checked my bag before leaving the second time, but alas, I made it all the way to my destination before I noticed the error. Thankfully I love ALL bagel varieties and happily ate my substitution (though I don't recommend their blueberry - too fake-y tasting), but on those days I was really craving a banana-walnut. I was finally able to get my fix this weekend (I ordered three!) and will undoubtedly be back again this coming weekend.

Love it. I’m from the Mid west. And love a good Cornbeef sandwich. This place delivered. I could care less about the New York name blah blah. If you from the mid west. Michigan and on East. This is the place for you in Houston.

Not as big a menu as Kenny and Ziggy's but then again half the price. Food was fresh an tasty. Ask your waitress for a hot bagel from nxt door if you are there before noon. CHEAP!!!!

Enjoyed another brunch at the always crowded NY Bagel today. Busy, friendly but always delicious and authentic. Bought 2 dozen ( bakers dozen) bagel at the attached bakery before leaving. This is a great Sunday brunch but be prepared to stand in line!

We enjoy there the taste of the very very good bagels of NEW YORK at good Prices!!! Really I liked it!!!

I writing an honest review so that others can avoid this place. When it first opened, I frequented quite a bit. They had great coffee and superb avocado toast. Not long after it opened, the "chef" left, and the quality plummeted. Well, it got a lot worse. They only have whole milk in the dairy selection now. No skim or 2 %. The avocado toast is a soggy hot disgusting mess. The menu description is entirely wrong. They serve a mere smear of avocado on plain white bread slices! The menu description says sourdough bread (it used to be). It is supposed to have microgreens, and when I asked for it, they gave me green onions! See below. The avocado toast was a soggy hot mess. I don't know what kind of soupy concoction they put on it, but it was gross. The french fries were cold and soggy. The egg whites were good and fluffy. My husband's omelet was overcooked and browned. The fruit was old and not eatable. This home fries were extra soggy and not eatable. His bagel was clearly not up to the typical NY Bakery standards. The HEB brand is better. Service-the hostess was surly and seemed to hate her job and the customers. She brought us the wrong check, and when she returned with our correct one, she slammed it on the table. The man who brought some of the food acted like he was doing us a favor. Clearly, this establishment doesn't have oversight, and if it does, that's just poor management and customer service. What a disappointment and. waste of money. Hopefully, this review will help you to avoid the same experience. With the numerous really good breakfast options in Bellaire, I can't see how this will survive. For a Sunday morning, it was less than half full. I guess most other people have recognized that this is not a good option for a tasty or pleasant meal.

Hot tea, hot food, bagels, very popular with people queuing for tables. A very satisfying breakfast.

So this is the closest you'll ever get to NYC in Houston. So you take a simple bagel bakery with no fuss no seats. Jst you buy your bagels and you get the hell oiutta there. Next door you open a full armoured deli, that serves all the bagels, plus sandwiches incl. Pastrami and corned beef. And everything else you could desire in qa NYC deli. Thats all folks.

OMG a real bagel shop! Not Galleria'd, not touristy at all... Great service and great deli food. Hot bagels! The best!

The New York Bagel Cafe and Deli is a trip to the past to my Northeast USA roots. This is a traditional deli with delicious breakfast offerings. I had the corned beef hash with an egg, rye toast and a side of fruit. All was delicious! I also helped my daughter by finishing the last of her three chocolate chip pancakes. Again, delicious! Our server kept our coffee cups full and made sure we had all we needed. It was a great morning in Houston visiting an old friend!

PICKUP Durning Covid - Chicken Salad with bagel was great. Chili Hot dog was tiny, like on a miniature bun. Chili ok, but not a lot - NOT A GOOD VALUE, was expecting 1/4lb dog for $8, fries just barely warm. Waited for them to text saying order ready, never received. My daughter lives in neighborhood, likes their bagels, so I thought I'd try them for lunch. If I try again I'll get a real corned beef sandwich and report back.

We have lived in Houston twice now, in the early 1980's and back again in 2010. On both occasions we have been willing to drive 45 minutes to get bagels from this place. On a typical visit, we pick up 5 dozen bagels and then have a quick meal in the coffee shop (if we can get a table). My wife loves the egg salad or chicken salad and I usually get a breakfast platter. The same people have owned this place since 1974 and we always see one of the owners on site. A great place.

I had ham and eggs with home fries for breakfast as well as a nice bowl of fresh fruit. Great waitress, Maria, with a great personality. Really fast service and really good food.
Best bagels around
Great breakfast spot too for families. They’ve been serving up all sorts of deli favorites for generations in Houston. But they’re bagels are what sets them apart. Absolutely one of the best bagels I’ve ever had.
