Diner Heaven!

By Cindy A |

We trek from Altadena to Nick's at least once a month for the fantastic breakfasts. The only place where my husband can get grits and I can order huevos with machaca! It's also the only restaurant where I'll order someone else's Hollandaise sauce...weekend specials include several different Benedicts. We've breakfasted with everyone from TV celebrities to LAPD undercover. You never know who you'll sit next to, but you do know the food will always be great!

Great breakfast place

By Jo-Ann D |

Great breakfast diner near Union Station. We walked and it felt good to stretch our legs after the train ride. The breakfasts were great.

Great breakfast in downtown Los Angeles

By Jrryo |

The best ham and egg breakfast in LA, maybe Calif. The ham is excellent. The eggs and hash browns were cooked to perfection. The server, Kim, is always very friendly, efficient and makes everyone feel welcome....she remembers her guests and their special requests. A dynamite server! The oatmeal was also prepared as I requested. And grits are very good. The menu has large number of items to chose from. Nick's is located in an industrial area but is worth the effort to find it.

Great Food in Old LA

By Skyros7 |

The scenery is interesting across from the old corn maze now a park with the metro link rolling in and out. Food is gourmet at a low price. I had the Cajun eggs Benedict and wonderful coffee. They have an extensive menu and the hot dogs are luscious gigantic dogs. All manner of friendly people go there. The staff is incredibly nice. I waited for an hour and a half for friends driving down from Sacramento and they made sure I had coffee. You can go to foo-foo places when you visit LA but don't miss this.

Best historic diner in LA

By Ronux |

Great horseshoe diner with excellent food. The server Kim is very friendly.

Your trainer will be happy

By Anita B |

Nick's is an LA original. One owner is a boxer and you can purchase cool t shirts - Fight Hard, Stay Humble. And then there's the eggs. I'm an egg white connoisseur, not by birth but by choice. A convert to healthy living. So, I hate when they a. Charge more for egg whites and b. Mess them up. Nick's won't do that. The egg white scrambles, esp "border style" are awesome. I can deadlift my weight now. (just kidding) Thanks to Nick's. Seriously, Nick's rocks.

More expensive than I thought

By GiantsFanLosAngeles |

Arrived on a Sunday afternoon after 1pm. This restaurant is very small. they have a tented waiting area outside. There are only stools at a counter inside, so our party of three ate outside at a table under some umbrellas. Waited about 15 min to get a table. Seems like only two waiters for the whole restaurant. Our meal took a while to come out. Food was tasty. Wife had eggs Benedict Florentine. I had a cheeseburger, son had a kids breakfast, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and bacon. Everything was fresh and hot. While the food was good, prices were mid-range, which surprised me, since it is a small diner/cafe. They seemed a little understaffed. Service was friendly, though. While the restaurant has been around for decades, the current ownership has been around since 2009, per the menu.

Excellent American breakfast!

By Gail P |

Went out of our way on our recent California road trip to visit Nicks Cafe for breakfast, and so glad we did! Huge portions of very tasty food obviously made freshly and from scratch! A great classic diner experience! Yum!

off the path for sure

By sirsmokeyjoe |

Breakfast for lunch, you bet ya. And Nicks does it right. Chiliaquiles with Choriso, I was in heaven. one of my favorite breakfast. Plenty of food and not oily at all. Perfect spot when working across the street at a festival. Cash only,

Nick's is Great

We had a great breakfast here. Portions are good size and price is reasonable. Try any of their specials for more bang for your buck.

Small local place with great food and quick service

By Selina C |

We saw this place on LA Eater and decided to give it a try (as weren't sure we would get a seat as knew it was small and counter stools only inside with only a small outdoor area too) but we got lucky as it was a Friday morning around 10am and we took the last 2 seats at the counter. It was also fairly easy to find and not too far off the beaten track. The set up is efficient with a small area where the waitress takes orders, serves and pours coffee etc, and a kitchen on the back working quickly to serve the tasty, fresh offerings. We went for a french toast combo for me and ham & eggs for the hubby, both of which were delicious with fresh hot coffee being topped up frequently. Overall, a great experience and a nice breakfast at a good price.

Found my breakfast spot!

By Suzanne C |

Well it's about time I find a good breakfast burrito…and they had several to choose from! Sausage, ham, chorizo, even pastrami!? I chose the sausage and it was moist with plenty of sausage-not skimpy, large too. Wow. Plus the salsa (chili) was just as tasty. I also ordered a pancake and it was as equally awesome! Until today I had yet to find a place that makes a tasty batter, must have had some cinnamon in it...atmosphere was interesting. Inside seating is counter style shaped like a U. So don't show up all crabby cuz you'll be sitting close to a stranger…and you may have to be friendly! Oh yeah, there is limited outside seating as well. Parking is easy because it's in sort of an industrial type area (not so crowded) so you can street park. I will definitely be returning!

small cafe, great food, good prices..

By blues911 |

this place has a darn good breakfast...get the specials they are amazing. Also ask for the home jam,,its amazing.

Worth a Trip.

By Brian L |

I'm glad I went out of my way to go here. Although I was a bit perplexed by nobody coming to greet me at the door (the sign at the podium says 'someone will be right with you') I just went in and seated myself and that seemed good enough. I changed my mind last minute to Nick's Breakfast Sandwich, which is eggs, cheese, ham on sourdough. The default is strawberry jam, but people who mix sweet and savory are deeply troubled and chaotic people. So I got mayo instead. Was shocked at how insanely good that ham is. That sealed the deal for me. Love the service that comes with some lovely charm and a bit of the ol spunkiness. The counter is the place to sit to hear all the jovial blue-collar regulars laughing it up with the staff.

Lives Up To The Hype!

By ceetee00 |

It was a 45 minute wait. But once we got in we were greeted warmly and our server was great. The food was wonderful, the service was wonderful and it was a great experience. The biscuits and gravy is to kill for, its so unique. The breakfast tacos were filling and tasty. We had a great time

Old school in a good way, one of LA's still-hidden gems

By Michael U |

Established in 1948 by a man named Nick, the railroads and newly developing Chinatown creating a built-in clientele, Nick’s Café tells a unique story on the back of its menu, and owned since 2009 by boxing manager Rod Davis the old-school spot at 1300 North Spring Street continues to weave a tale in modern times that apparently does not look all that different from when the place opened its doors. Still wrapped around a U-shaped and a hangout for firefighters as well as cops, the latter a result of decades under the management of LAPD, it is as a model train circulates tracks overhead that guests are offered seating both indoors and outside, a list of daily specials hung over the kitchen in addition to a list of diner staples made the old way and at a fair price. Decorated in vintage signs and peddling T-shirts featuring General Manager Carlos Morales, “The Solution” a client of Rod’s for several years, it is on Nick’s famous Ham that many plates are built, a generous slice with Eggs for $15.50 “Cash Only” ordered on thrice within earshot and freshly cut slices anchoring Nick’s $9.95 Breakfast Sandwich with Toast, Eggs, Cheddar and Strawberry Jelly creating a taste not dissimilar to an un-fried Monte Cristo. Happy to see Pure Maple Syrup and “Real” Butter available for a small Fee, the fact that both have to be spelled out perhaps the only sign of Nick’s changing since it opened, suffice it to say that Buttermilk Flapjacks are scratch-made, fluffy and no-frills, the same to be said of Muffins available in a variety of flavors that are sliced, buttered and placed inside—down to the grill. More impressed by Banana Nut than Carrot Cake, the suggested “Cream Cheese Icing” visually absent and thus lacking in sweetness, it was wrapping up with an a la carte Biscuit for two dollars that another surprise was found, the Drop-style exemplified by a buttery crumb that is light but not crumbly and excellent on its own or topped in housemade “Mix-Berry Syrup” with a viscosity more like Jam or Preserves.

Great breakfast

By NickdaHammer |

Been meaning to do breakfast here for sometime. Went on a Saturday morning. Took awhile to get our orders but well worth the wait. Had a 'Broadway' omelette, which was perfect. My niece had the French toast and loved it.

Delicious

By bkute65 |

Wow, I have a friend who's Dad has brought her here since she was in diapers. So I had to try it and I was not disappointed. My husband had the huevos rancheros and it was amazing. The meat was so tasty! And I had the veggie scrambled eggs with their homemade salsa which is so spicy but sooo delicious. They have so many different types of eggs Benedict which looked scrumptious as well. The service was excellent, but it is an old diner so there is not a lot of space. I'm sure at certain times you may have to wait.... and if you do trust me it will be worth the wait 😉!

Have to try it

By Ronen S |

Was looking for breakfast at tripadvisor. The place was far from my place but decided to give it a chance. I had a tasty well done breakfast and got it wuth a huge smile, cold water and nick's special souce. Go and try.

Nice place close to Dodger Stadium

By superman2177 |

Stopped here for a quick bite before I did a tour of Dodger Stadium. It was breakfast time so we had some good ole fashioned biscuits and pancakes. Being from the South, I know good comfort food. This was it. Service was pretty fast and the staff was friendly. Give it a try!

Divy but very good

By Paul M |

This place is pretty divey but friendly. We sat outside for our breakfast after a short, 10-ish minute, wait. A nice variety on the menu and we each enjoyed what we ordered. I really don't have much to say except that if you want to have a good, solid breakfast and aren't fussy about ambience, I very much would recommend Nick's. Ham and cheese omelet for me, Huevos Rancheros for my friend. Home fries as well. Both were very good.

Great breakfast!

By Michael N |

I ordered a standard breakfast of pancakes, ham, and eggs with coffee. I don't know what it is but I think their ham is famous and it is very, very delicious. The decor is like early 80's breakfast restaurant and it is cash only. Overall, the breakfast meal was very good and will definitely come back.

Disappointing LA Tourist Trap - Save Your Time

By r m |

AVOID THIS OVERHYPED SPOT! Wasted 45 minutes waiting at this 'LA institution' only to get completely dismissed by a hostess who looked like she wandered straight from Comic-Con in a faded Sonic the Hedgehog shirt. She couldn't be bothered to look THREE FEET in front of her when calling names, then gave us an eye roll and shrug when we tried to get her attention - we walked out. No way I'm giving my money to a place that treats customers like an inconvenience before they even sit down. Those Sysco trucks during off-hours tell you what you're getting - standard diner fare at inflated prices. Nothing wrong with basic ingredients if the service was decent, but don't expect anything special here. Don't let the tourist-packed line fool you - a wait doesn't mean it's worth it. The fact that this place can't even manage basic host stand etiquette while charging premium prices for standard diner food perfectly captures LA's overhyped food scene. When your hostess dismisses waiting customers without even a glance three feet in front of her, it says everything about their standards. Save your time. There are dozens of breakfast spots nearby where basic customer service isn't too much to ask. HARD PASS on this tourist trap!

Returning customers

By WebbDavid |

Authentic, tasty and friendly staff. I have visited 4 years ago and found the place just as good. I am sure I will come back.

The ultimate breakfast plate.

By Camilla H |

This serves all-day breakfast catering from the big greasy to the bowl of fruit with granola. This cafe has history and it shows..all the different layers of people and eras are on the walls, the menu is worth reading for the cafe's timeline. The food is good and cheap, you drink coffee and tea from big no-nonsense mugs and watch other diners at different stages of their days - cops coming off the beat to artists just starting.

Truly Old School

By Scott Crawford |

A JOINT and I love it. No pretense just good food and super friendly service. A place you want to go back to because the "help" are just folks who care. It's in a factory district so you can't just pop in. It's truly old school and I like it!

Warm Welcome

By Evan P |

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly, making our dining experience unforgettable. The atmosphere was so charming and inviting, it felt like the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a special celebration.

You might have to wait on the weekend.

By OnParleFrancais |

Very good food. Both owners work here, often at different times. Be sure to ask what the specialties are because you will want to try them. LOTS of parking, either on the lot or in the neighborhood. VERY crowded on the weekend.

This is it

By rixcerezo |

I like Nick's because its honest and straight-forward attitude. You get good food, good portions, fair prices and a old fashioned ambience (they don't need to vintage decor because they have been in business for over 70 years). You mingle with the crowd and staff because it is small an cozy. Come for the meal, have a retro experience.

Prepare to wait

By durangoaqua |

Tiny cafe off the beaten path. Super popular, super busy. Large groups should prepare for a wait to be seated...outside, as inside is only counter seating. The food was really good. Big portions. The service was good. Nothing fancy, but good food.

The Best Benedict’s This Side of the Mississippi

By Connor |

Serving the best Benedict’s this side of the Mississippi on weekends, Nick’s cafe has been in business longer than many of the patrons have been alive. Teeming with activity on the inside, the staff is about as diverse as you can get, with many of the cooks and servers working there for years and years (which I can personally attest to.) The traditional Benedict is my absolute favorite, with a fat slice of homemade and honey roosted ham as the centerpiece to the amazing dish. Unlike other restaurants in LA, the ham is fresh, it’s glazed, and it’s the best ham you will ever have. The home fries are homemade as well, and not from one of those gross bags that come pre-packed all the way from god knows where. Truly, if I could recommend any one breakfast to anyone visiting or anyone living in LA, it would be the weekend Benedict’s at Nick’s.

Great breakfast diner atmosphere

By Elliott |

I had the huevos rancheros and highly recommend them if you're hungry. Nice people, nice atmosphere. I'd love to go back and try more of the items, including the ham which is supposedly famously good.

Old School is Cool

By chromosomeh69 |

Had breakfast at Nick's the other day with my Sis, and we really liked it. The portions are generous, coffee was strong, and the food was good. Pancakes were flavorful, fluffy and large. The ham steak with eggs and potatoes was great. We loved that the ham steak was thick and tasty. You get to sit around a counter if you eat inside. The outside has tables. There is a tiny unisex bathroom in the back around the building, a small parking lot, and street parking available. Service there was nice, everyone was friendly. It looks like the people there like their jobs, and it shows. I noticed they welcomed their regulars by name. Nice touch. It means people like to come back there. I ought to know, it was my second visit and the waitress said "nice to see you again" when I sat down. Be prepared to wait in line if you go on a weekend.

It is a Great Diner

By elizabethlascheid |

Nick's has changed it menu a few times and has tried to be trendy. It is not trendy. It is just a really cool old diner that has been around forever. There was real a guy named Nick. Most of the food is great. Do not have an English Muffin, they suck. But anything else is really good. They serve breakfast pretty late and their burgers are so good. I love their pancakes, when they have them. I don't eat grits, but I have been told by people I have gone with that they are splendid. So, if you like grits you will love these. They have a few different burgers you can order and all are great. Parking is in front and usually okay. This area of Spring Street is not the best at night. So, no walking off the meal after the sun sets. But it is well patrolled and you will be fine. Nick's is a local hangout, but darn we are nice to tourists so have fun.

Pork Chile Verde Sammy

By thekingofkings99 |

Get the split pea soup. Put the salsa in the soup. Why? The salsa is so good you could put it on cardboard and eat it. Order whatever the special is because its fresh and delicious. If you're lucky it's the pork chile verde sammy.

Great Breakfasts in an old-fashioned styled cafe

By juliissa |

I enjoyed the house special: ham and eggs and I wasn't disappointed. The ham was well-seasoned with good portion of hash brown and of course scrambled eggs. Fortunately, we arrived at 10 ish on Sunday so we didn't have to wait to be seated, otherwise I hear that you will be waiting for 20- 30 minutes. We sat at the counter and enjoyed our community style breakfast. They have a tiny parking lot but there is plenty of parking available on the streets since it is mostly an industrial area.

Nick's Cafe May 2015

By atxgrl79 |

nice welcoming staff fills this small diner. the food is good and made to order. due to reviews I made it a priority to make it to this diner. although the food hit the spot I wouldn't go out of my way (or sit in traffic again) to come back. if in the area I would probably try it again. the ham was the star of the plate however the potatoes were good too. $18 for a large oj and ham and egg plate was a bit much.

Stand in line...wait your turn

By retiredchuck |

A true "hole-in-the-wall" stop... Friendly staff and customers...No table seating, all counter (approx 25 stools) Stand outside until seat is available...Well known to locals...try the eggs and ham...Bottomless cup of coffee.

One of the best!!

By stevenY1157PB |

If you're looking for great diner cooking at a great price and a really fun atmosphere this is the place!! It's a people watching Chyna place too. Check it out you won't be disappointed. It's the best for breakfast and lunch. Just a great place overall.

An average diner

By Kimberley |

This was a very cute place. A little off the beaten path which I liked. The outdoor seating area is really quaint and a little deceiving because when you go inside it's literally just counter seating like your traditional diner. There is a train track that goes around the inside but it is no longer working which was a little sad and took away from the charm. Especially after reading the story on their menu. Now to the food: I had the biscuits and gravy and they were just OK. The biscuits were a bit overdone and the gravy was mediocre. There wasn't that much flavor but I think what really did it was the missing fluffy biscuits under the gravy. My boyfriend had eggs, pancakes, and bacon. The pancakes are HUGE. Not bad but one of them was burnt. The eggs were covered in greasy oil and the bacon was pretty darn good. Like I mentioned before, your typical diner. Over the top awesome? No.

So worth It!

By Sassenach84 |

Last Sunday, 5 of us went for a late morning breakfast at Nick's Cafe. We all tried the infamous Eggs Benedict and it was heavenly. We had three different renditions and we all raved. We learned we had to use cash, but we were grateful for the ATM. Amazing food, friendly service and laid back restaurant. Go find it!

American breakfast at its best

This place is not to be missed if you are looking for the real deal in breakfast. Friendly and warm service. Very tasty ham. To be recommended.

A hole in the wall...

By Eliana Solera |

But we love these types of place. We ordered the Nicks sandwich, which was great and the huevos rancheros, which were the best we ever had! And we live in Texas!! Awesome outing with Dr. Astrid Heger. Worth the visit.

Genuine 1950s quality breakfast

By JinnyJones1982232a |

Wow, the atmosphere, and wow the food - brilliant eggs benedict of all kinds, pretty old omelettes, great ham, served sitting round the counter. The waiters worked really hard, the service was fast even though it was packed. I loved it.

Holy cow

By Scott P |

Part of traveling is looking for places like this. This a hole in the wall place. You wouldn’t know to go there if you weren’t looking for it. It’s small but you can sit outside also. If I’m ever back in LA I WILL be going back. Food is delicious and it’s definitely a place where the locals go.

Breakfast

By Alejandro F |

Can be a wait but great food and good portions. Staff always friendly. A bit divey like a true diner.

Good address

By Janick |

A typical and friendly place. What to do off the beaten track. The staff is attentive, there is room to park around.

Pigs Ahoy!

By Jeff K |

There's a lot to experience visually while waiting for the largest ham steak I've ever seen! From the vintage Coca-Cola cooler to the napkin art left behind, it's all worth a look. And there's a vibe emanating from the crowded bar that enhances the food and the experience. Efficient service from seasoned staff preparing excellent eggs, hash, bacon, etc. It's one of the best breakfast places I've ever visited.

Absolutely check it out

By takemeaway50 |

Love this hole in the wall. Starting with Kim my waitress to the other employees and customers. Kim was fun attentive and friendly. They make their bone in ham there and it was delicious!! I had the traditional eggs Benedict which was perfect and filling hollandaise was perfect and the ham was tender with slight sweet flavor perfect and they offer regular or crispy hash browns I chose the crispy and they were the best. They have counter seating, few tables and a few outside tables. There’s some parking too. Don’t forget your CASH, cash only. If you do forget there’s an ATM. If you’re not a hole in the wall kind of person please give this place a try it will change your mind. Looking forward to returning

My goto place for Eggs Benedict!

By mike m |

My wife and I have been looking for a good Eggs Benedict ever since our local favorite restaurant, Eureka, closed down a couple years ago. Well, we now have a strong contender. This place is just north of downtown & chinatown, in a relatively quiet industrial area, and is a very pleasant place to eat. Now, the thing that caught my attention was the menu board with 9 different types of Eggs Benedict! I have to go for the traditional style, as I am a purist, and my wife goes for something different, so she had California style. Mine was perfect, and had thick slices of ham which was nice. I definitely recommend the traditional version. The rest of the menu looked quite good, so we will be coming back. As for prices, my wife said it was a little expensive, as each meal was well over $10, so that is a negative, but if you don't mind paying a few extra bucks, you'll probably like this place. Final note. There is an interesting looking small park across the street. It was all fenced in, so I think it is being renovated, but it would be worth checking out if it is open.

A great place to eat and chat

By Like2travel-eat |

I had read good reviews of this place on Trip Advisor and walked to this cafe this morning . I was promptly welcomed by the manager-server, Kim. I tried their Steak and Eggs dish, today’s special dish with their home made fresh salsa, that was yummy. I have notice that a lot of law enforcement officers and locals eat there. Most customers knew each other and Kim knew almost all of them, I believe that a wonderful and very friendly environment. This cafe is there since 1948 and Kim has been working there for 9 years. She is very considerate, attentive, and interactive. Don’t forget to ask for their home made fresh salsa!

Cute little breakfast cafe

By S G |

Wonderful eggs Benedict My daughters split an omelete and neither could finish her half. We were there on a weekend and there was a line for outdoor seating but it was worth wait

Best food Around the area

By daniel y |

I love this little Old school place. It is defenitly a Diamond in the rough. The place has been there for ages, the owner is a great guy. Always happy with a smile on his face. The price has raised a little bit in the past few years but still very worth every bite. My favorite is the COUNTRY SKILLET. OMG it is amazing. The portions are filling with every plate. Or you can just get the soup of the day with half a sandwich. Brunch spot, yup perfect place for it.

Delicious breakfast!

By Don & Carolyn S |

Wow, I can't say enough good things about the food. I had Scrambled Ham, Border Style (onions, bell peppers, jalapenos, tomato and cilantro were added). Attractive and delicious! I chose a biscuit instead of toast and it was the best I can remember eating. It came with their Tomato Preserves. Yum! My husband had a Pastrami n Eggs burrito. It was also delicious as was the added salsa. The coffee was excellent. The waitress was perfectly attentive. We sat outside and it was very pleasant. It's very small and located near downtown. Cash only. Be aware of all this. If you want good food you won't be disappointed.

Holy Breakfast!!

By Maddy P |

I stumbled across this diner when on vacation and was super tempted to go everyday I was in LA. The pancakes were tremendous- as were the Chilaquiles. Highly recommend. It also turned out to be one of the cheapest places we ate at.

Don't let the surrounding area scare you away....

By Adria P |

AWESOME food - cash only - very much a local joint, nothing fancy at all, but delicious. I had the sausage scramble, I think it was called "border style" (with peppers, onions, jalapeno). Hubs had ham and eggs and said it was some of the best ham he's had. Too far away from home to make a regular stop, but if I find myself in LA again, I'll be back.

Terrific Old School Restaurant for Breakfast & Lunch

By zengirl_10 |

Just moved to downtown Los Angeles and this will be a go-to spot for breakfast on the weekends. Great service, decent Mexican-style breakfasts (and lots of other options on the menu too), with an old diner-style restaurant on the inside, and outdoor tables on the patio. Within walking distance to Chinatown, and to the Metro stop there too.

Best ham and eggs

By Trish K |

Nick's has the best ham and eggs! No wonder they have been in business since 1948! The ham has a sweetness that we have never tasted before. The eggs and hash browns were excellent and the biscuit was light and flaky. They have a board listing the egg benedicts offered for the day - a list with about 8 different choices. On Saturday and Sundays the coffee is FREE! They have a counter inside and some tables outside. The parking lot can accommodate 6-8 cars, but there is plenty of street parking.

Eggs Benedict anyone?

By Brian R |

My friends and I rode our bicycles here for breakfast, We like to do rides to restaurants for breakfast. The weather was bad by our houses, so we came here. The weather was great. We sat outside with our bicycles. We all had various varieties of Eggs Benedict. They were all very good. Two things to be aware of: 1) they are cash only, and 2) not all of the items have prices on them, especially the Eggs Benedict and the staff isn't always sure of the prices on them. We will return.

Yummy breakfast

By bkute65 |

Do you want a great breakfast close to downtown Los Angeles? Then you must try Nick’s Cafe. It is literally a lunch COUNTER from back in the day. The food is delicious and plentiful, great pancakes! The service is fast and friendly in this very tiny busy restaurant. Trust me, it’s worth waiting for!

Great little place where the locals like to dine!

By Marilyn W |

This local place is very popular. Be prepared to possibly wait for a table. The table options are outside on the small patio. Inside you sit at a counter. A bit tight, but cozy. The place has been around since 1948, and has a retro vibe. Lots of choices. Breakfast or lunch. No dinner. Mon-Fri. 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., & Sat/Sun. 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. My tuna melt and fries were yummy. Too bad they don't offer shakes. Husband loved his breakfast burrito. Out did the place he used to get his favorite one. The only negative is they are cash only. No credit cards. Idea: You can get your order to go and have a picnic at the new Los Angeles Historical Park which is directly across the street.

Hole in the wall GRAND SLAM

Whenever I find hole in the wall restaurants, I know they're gonna be good. I got the hash breakfast and it was delicious. The service was wonderful and fast. All the piggy art was incredible.

Gluten free vegan meets Nick's Cafe

By Hlwdgrl |

My gluten free vegan dining companion and I decided to try Nick's Cafe for breakfast based on reviews we had read. I was a little skeptical that we'd be able to find anything on the menu he could eat but they whipped up a great egg-white scramble with tons of avocado and substituted corn tortillas for the toast. The place is steeped in LA history... cool original counter and a (non-functioning) model train track around the ceiling. I had the pancake short stack (after all, how can you go wrong with a short stack, right?). We'll be back as I do want to try their ham (for which they are famous) and the eggs Benedict (ditto). Check their website at http://nickscafe.net/.

Awesome food!

By AmandaWN2005 |

This place has history, a blend of patrons, wonderful staff, an outdoor dining area, and awesome food! What else could you need? So glad we came across it!

Great classic american diner!

By Casper H |

We came here for a late breakfast - more like lunch, but they do service breakfast all day, so we had breakfast. Nick's is great. Old school classic american diner. I had the house special - ham and eggs and it was great. There's more than enough on your plate and it's not a small piece of ham. This is ham overload. Next time I'll go for the eggs benedict, but they only serve those during the weekend. Just means I'll have to come back :)

DELICIOUS

By aztkdiva |

My friend and I went here after hiking at Elysian Park. We were hungry and yelped eateries, then we found a Groupon so decided to venture out to the oddly located little shack that houses "Nick's Cafe" on its own little island in the middle of no man's land. This is not a fancy high-end snobby/aesthetically inviting establishment, seating is limited and it gets packed, but the staff was very friendly & efficient regardless of how busy they were. We were seated inside, where seating is laid out like an older diner counter. The menu is great and the servings are hearty. I ordered the Waffle Supreme and my friend ordered the Nick's Ham & Eggs. The waffles are topped with FRESH Strawberries, Blueberries, Bananas, and whip cream..... I LOVED THIS!..... as other places will top pancakes and waffles with sugary preserved fruit topping vs real fruit. Let me tell you it makes a huge difference to the pallet. The waffles were delicious and soft but not mushy, and tasted fresh, unlike other places where they will be really tough on the outside and taste like reheated frozen waffles. The sausage patty and scrambled eggs were perfect also. The Nick's Ham & Eggs, is WOW! It's a massive serving that can easily feed two people, although my friend did eat the entire meal on his own; therefore, I guess it really depends on how hearty ones appetite is. I am not a ham fan, but this Ham STEAK that is served here is delicious. Not rubbery, nor super salty, it's perfect. This dish comes with a small serving of some kind of fruit glaze that seems to be made fresh in-home and is yummy. We also ordered a chicken burger to go and that burger was huge and our friend said it was delicious. On weekends coffee is FREE with the order of any entree. Their eggs Benedict menu changes frequently and they post it up on an erase board. Also, you can substitute sandwich bread for a bagel on any of their breakfast sandwich items. There is patio seating and street parking is a not a major inconvenience,if you don't mind walking a few steps from wherever you park to the cafe. Overall, we really really like this place and plan on returning.

Hidden Gem

Travel back in time to the early 1970s! This Cash only establishment is sure to satisfy you. Sit at the wrap around counter on those old reliable vinyl stools and enjoy really good home cooking. We’ve been here a few times and it’s always been yummy!

Weekend Breakfast Delight

By jackswalley |

When was the LAST time coffee came free with your meal? Nick's, a quarter mile walk from the Chinatown Station on the Metro Gold Line out of Union Station, has a weekend special. Also on weekends are 5 to 10 delightful Eggs Benedict dishes not even printed on the menu. I had the Thanksgiving Benedict as it was almost Thanksgiving. 2 poached eggs, hollandaise, cornbread stuffing, turkey, cranberry ....you get the idea. There is a chef figuring out something creative in what we used to know as a "greasy spoon" joint. Needless to say, there was quite a line of customers waiting patiently to get in for breakfast at 11am on a Saturday. The word is out. Come see for yourself if you are in downtown LA on a weekend morning. Oh. Cash only. Yup, just like you remember.

Best Breakfast!

This is another example that a place doesn't need to be fancy to have great food! They serve a great size breakfast with great tasting food. When was the last time you got ham carved off the bone in your breakfast order? The best!
